Reviews (page 6 of 8)

Very chill, mellow, listenable album album but none of these songs blow my hair back. Sounds like it would be a soundtrack to a Paul Rudd movie where he’s not funny.

I like belle and Sebastian but seldom think any albums are amazing front to back. This one was pretty good though

Decent but forgettable

Great album too chill out to after a long Sunday night. If I was to be critical, I'd say Belle and Sebastian hit better when they're part of a mixed playlist or compilation album. I love their sound, but I did get bored on a couple of occasions. That being said, "Judy and the Dream of Horses" was my favourite song on the album. So they ended on a high. Cool music. 👌

I have the flu right now so maybe I’m just grouchy but it was fine.

Other than wanting to snap the harmonica player’s neck, I enjoyed this at a very simple level. Just simple music setting relatable scenes. The assortment of instruments was a nice touch. Altogether, whelming Favorite track: If You’re Feeling Sinister Least favorite track: Me and the Major

I have never settled on how much I like Belle & Sebastian. On paper I do like them, when I hear them in films or the radio I like that, but whenever I go to listen to them I get a bit bored after a while. I've listened to a few albums of theirs and they generally all sound the same to me. For a band that have been around so long I really would expect them to change their sound but it's all the same stuff. It's not bad at all, just not brilliant.

Heard of this band but never listened to them. Didn't realize they were from the 90s. Probably an interesting contrast to what was out at the time. Sounds like mid-00s overly precious indie music. It's fine but not something I'd seek out. 3.2

We’ve all taken ourselves more seriously in life than we should and I suppose I should be happy no one got a musical record of that time in my life but if putting The Trial on the cover of the album doesn't tell you something. Respect to B&S and they matured with age I’ll give them that but then please give me their later stuff.

B The Stars Of Track And Field 4 Seeing Other People 4 Me And The Major 3 Like Dylan In The Movies 4 The Fox In The Snow 4 Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying 3 If You're Feeling Sinister 3 Mayfly 3 The Boy Done Wrong Again 3 Judy And The Dream Of Horses 3 F*** Adam.

Rounding up

Folksy and energetic. Didn’t finish the album

3.3/5 Best Track: Judy And The Dream Of Horses

Listenable but not what I'd usua!ly listen to and quite samey sounding throughout. 3*

"chamber indie pop", typical guitars and soft vocals, but adding in some horns and different percussion

I'm familiar with some Belle & Sebastian songs, but none of this album. A nice collection of folky pop tunes that would probably grow on me with repeat listens.

B&S are one of those bands that I presumed were one-and-done. I loved them in the 90's, although this wasn't my favourite of their albums. A quick wikipedia search shows they are still together, still performing and still producing. Who knew?

I honestly don't know whether I loved this or hated it.

It's a nice feel good album with a rather boring singer who would benefit from a wider range.

Easy listenign

Listened Before? No FWIW I like the red-toned album cover with what appears to be Kafka's "The Trial" put off to the side of a woman staring off into an unseen room. The Stars of Track and Field is a slow-building indie folk song featuring deadpan delivery and a rising climax. Seeing Other People is lead by a wandering piano melody and simple cymbal / snare tap. I kind of hate the vocals on Me And The Major -- not sure why, but it just rubs me wrong. Fox In the Snow and If You Are Feeling Sinister are both pretty songs. This album falls into a bit of a void for me personally. I never mind indie folk-pop when it is playing, but it rarely excites me. This album adheres to that general rule, and while I can appreciate that it is at least fine with solid production, it does not in any way move me. This is a soft 3 / 5 for me. Added to Library? No Songs Added to Playlists:

Three.

A very bubbly album that was nice to have on while working while it was raining outside. Kind of faded away towards the end but still enjoyed listening to the while album. Sounded like they used a lot of different instruments throughout the album which was cool.

I wish I was still into this indie thing, because I think I would have really liked this. I can tell it's good stuff, I'm just pretty worn out on this kitschy indie sound.

2nd B&S album here after the excellent ‘Tigermilk ‘ earlier this year. This has been my big 1001 album artist discovery of the year, and I’ve been going through the back catalog but hadn’t listened to this one yet. Some great narrative lyricism and sharp wit per the band’s usual standards, coupled with the simple yet effective twee instrumentals that always manage to reinvent the wheel when it comes to catchy. Had to listen to this one in the car so audio quality wasn’t great and need to revisit it - personally I would’ve swapped this one for ‘Arab Strap’ or ‘Catastrophe Waitress,’ but this band is so consistent it’s a credit that any one of their albums could end up on this list.

Me and The Major is fun. Get Away From Me, I'm Dying and If You're Feeling Sinister is a good one two. In general this isn't really my thing, this mellow alternative. It's not off putting but I don't really feel like coming back to any of it with any regularity.

Belle and Sebastian make really nice music it just doesn’t quite have the edge or emotion I want from it

I have to agree it's mediocore, at least for me. I didn't remember anything after listening, nothing caught my attention.

The fathers of that twee Portland mid-aughts sound, like the shit Decemberists.

I quite liked their first album, particularly because it was done while they were students and was done on an ultra low budget and pre-record label contract. This album is around the same quality but is post record label contract which takes away some of the excitement.

This band is the quintessential, Proto Indie, chamber pop group. They influenced such great groups as Sufjan Stevens, Badly drawn boy etc. yes they’re Twee AF and they do have a breezy pop sound, but they aren’t pop, if you know what I mean. I think I like their subsequent album, The boy with the Arab Strap better (check out Sleep the clock around, it’s brilliant) but this is still a decent offering.

Schöne sanfte Songs

I like the vibe on this, but a lot of the songs sound very similar. Seeing Other People is my favorite track

Better I thought but idk if I'd listen again

Like many albums I don't know by bands/groups/people I don't know, "it was fine". Pleasurable background music to be sure, but nothing that really caught my ear as "wow! that's an undiscovered gem!". The most noteworthy item about this duo is that it is actually comprised of two Scottish guys both named Stuart.

I thought it was 60's folk... nope 1996 pop!

Ca serait un 4 si le chanteur avait pas une voix si geignarde

This is alright. I don't have strong feelings one way or the either about this album, it's perfectly average.

I get why people like this type of music, and I liked some of the songs, but it's just not in my personality to like pretty, sad, slightly whiny, songs.

This sounds like something Zach Braff would put on as mood music in an attempt to get laid. But then it got a little better and sounded like some of the early Kinks. Then I remembered Zach Braff started a Kickstarter to get financing for a movie no one in Hollywood wanted to make. Why's Zach Braff have to get hurt in this review? And more importantly, why is that clouding my opinion on Belle and Sebastian? I don't have an answer, but here we are. This is MY journey.

hørte på det to ganger husker ingen ting fra det

Listened, but will forget. So it's not bad but also not too catchy

Okay to fantastic, music that seeps in like Winding roots. Music I may not return to but will remember.

3 stars

This is peak "pretend you're in an indie movie" music. Rich, layered instrumentation feels cinematic and lush. It's like if the Smiths weren't problematic! Still, nothing quite sticks with me enough to give this 4 stars, but it easily earns 3.

Pretty good. Not my style, but good. 3*

Sweet gentle.

I keep thinking what would be the best mood to listen to this album. Laying on the grass with a glass of your favourite drink? The album has some good tracks, my personal best is The Stars of Track & Field. I can't rate it as 4/5 because I don't like the manner with which he's singing.

Haven't listened to these guys in a while. This is such a unique and interesting band. They strike me as like the Wes Anderson of music. IDK why.

Balanserer hårfint mellom kjedelig og spennende, men til syvende og sist er albumet ålreit. Litt morsomt er det når det konkluderes med at onanering kan løse personlige problemer bedre enn kristendommen.

Not my thing but I respect it

I’ve never heard of Belle & Sebastian before, so this is my first time listening. This is a decent indie pop/rock record, very reminiscent of Nick Drake on some songs. At times, the melodies are catchy. Favorite songs: Seeing Other People, Mayfly, Judy and the Dream Horses.

Pretty good but also pretty forgettable. A few good songs but nothing too memorable or catchy

Nice album, surprised it wasn’t BWTAS but maybe that will come later

It grew on me more and more as it went on. I don’t love their sound enough to give 4 stars, but I do like this album.

Belle & Sebastian's If You're Feeling Sinister is like a breath of fresh air after listening to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' Murder Ballads. Where Murder Ballads is dark, brooding, and unsettling, If You're Feeling Sinister is light, whimsical, and uplifting. While both albums kind of dabble in the same area (songs that sound like they could be lullabies), they couldn't be more different in tone and style. If Murder Ballads is a creepy carnival ride, then If You're Feeling Sinister is a lazy afternoon spent lounging in a meadow. But despite the stark contrast, both albums showcase the power of storytelling through music. Nick Cave and Stuart Murdoch are both brilliant songwriters who know how to weave intricate narratives with just a few choice words. So if you're in the mood for something a little lighter and more uplifting, then If You're Feeling Sinister is the perfect antidote to the dark and twisted world of Murder Ballads. Just be prepared for Stuart Murdoch's infectious melodies to get stuck in your head for days.

Not too bad

While I thought this was pretty decent, I don't see myself getting in the mood to listen to this kind of music very often. Maybe it'll grow on me over time.

like a 3.5/5, I'll give it a 3 in the system I guess

Ok Album but not my thing

Nice songs. Simple, pretty well written. Not my style but decent songs.

At the time, I was well aware of this band, but they've never caught my attention. This is not for me. Honestly the lead singer fails it for me. I don't jive with his tone. The songwriting sounds decent. Production is top notch. The entire album feels cohesive. When I was paying attention, the lyrics were really sweet. Overall I'd call this a good album that I'll never listen to again, but will give it another chance if the situation came up. PS: Sounds like Stephen Malkmus took notes from Me and the Major. PPS: I try not to research an album too much before a first listen. It adds bias that often ruins the experience for me. I learned how much critical acclaim this album has received after hearing this. I'm a little surprised but not shocked. I know it goes that way for me. Given that, I will probably take another stab at this in the future to try and hear what others hear, but I really think the lead singer is the killer for me. I hear there's a live version of this album, maybe I'll give that a try.

Some seductive melodies here, even if the vocal affections can be wearing. Another group I was aware of, but hadn't really listened to until now. Overall I enjoyed it

Bom album de folk music mas não tem um diferencial

I wanted to like this more than I did. It just blended into the background for me in the end! Saved tracks: Seeing Other People, Like Dylan in the Movies, If You're Feeling Sinister

I struggle with B&S Some intriguing lyrics Some sweet melodies But overall it feels flimsy and lightweight And I hate his voice

Smell in A trashcan

Again takes me back to when I was trying to be folky in high school hehe

I probably prefer the later albums with more lush instrumentation and harmonies, as his voice is sort of lispy on this. Still some great lyrics and tunes.

Pleasant enough, sort of washed over me but a nice listen

beautiful songs, nice voices, but not completely my style

This is a classic example of indie rock, and no doubt a point of reference for so many indie artists going into the 2000s -- it sounds so much like many of the bands of that decade, but without sounding too depressing or morose. This was a pleasant, low-key listen that managed to stay true to the indie scene of the time without falling below the threshold into 'boring' territory. This is the kind of music that you expect to hear backing nice hipster indie movies, as well. That said, while I find music like this to be listenable and certainly even pleasant, it often doesn't leave too strong of a mark. This album wasn't an exception to that. Therefore: good, but not great.

I waffled a lot between 3 stars and 4. There’s a lot to like about this album. Each song has a piece that makes me think I’d really like the music Stuart Murdoch listens to. But then in so many songs they add something like a harmonica or a triangle or a weird vocal harmony that distracts from the rest. Better than I expected, it got better further into the album, nearly but not quite a 4.

If an album was a sixth form common room

6,5/10

It was alright

Nice. Just nice.

Perfectly fine album. Not my style but in no way is it bad.

Bem legalzinho mas sem muito entusiasmo

Wasn't my favorite. Good songwriting but something about the vocals just wasn't for me

Liked more than thought. Gorgeous narrative Some great tracks. Some are dreary and at times struggle with the voice

House of Love channelling The Shins whilst listening to the Kinks. The Fox in the Snow is a highlight for me so far. Just got a flavour of Sufjan Stevens.

I like one of their songs but it isn't on this album on the whole not really noteworthy

lite småmysigt men samtidigt rätt kass

Myspop!

- Very much giving me The Smiths vibes but I’m not mad at it whatsoever

3 stars

It was ok

I think I missed my window with this band. Didn’t get into them when I first heard of them, simply because of their name. Sounded too froofy. I wouldn’t have liked them even if I gave them a chance. A handful of years later, they would have fit well with what I was listening to at the time, like Badly Drawn Boy, Devendra Banhart, The Shins, etc. Fast forward to now, it’s not catching for some reason. The melodies are really good and should work, but they’re missing the mark. I don’t know way. Maybe it’s the delivery. The vocals…do they just not pop? Overall good, not great.

Ruhig, richtung Simon and garfunkel style

Too twee for me.

Had heard the name but not any of their contributions. It may take repeated listens to unpick the layers but on the first run through it set sail and steered a pleasing course. The vocals were infectious supported by strong production. The songs has enough variation with some decent lyrics.

Never heard of this band before and when I read indie rock from the 90s I had my expectations what it would sound like and it ended up just like that. It's alright but could be more interesting.

Bops along sweetly, but is ultimately forgettable. Only a few days ago there was a Divine Comedy LP from the same era and similar stock, which I preferred.

Pretty decent, surprisingly doesn't sound like mid-90s indie and more 2010s, with less emo-centric verses. I'd argue about this album being on the list, but it does serve as a nice counter-balance to the other grunge and alternative coming out at the same time. 3/5.

Twee on outta here

This the classic Belle and Sebastian chill vibe. Immediately recognizable. Judy and the Dream of Horses is a favorite on this record. And Like Dylan in the Movies.

Picked up towards the end. I would have absolutely frothed this as a teen.

Chill indie music, just not the greatest.

This sounds nice, like very nice, but I can see why someone would call it boring. Because while it’s nice, it gets boring. Unfortunately. If the vibe is right though this album can probably sound incredible. Great closing track too, I literally dreamt of horses. Album Cover: not feeling very sinister 2/5

Not bad just not for me. One and done.

This album is very adequate. Folk music for people who like cats. The vocal intonations make me think of Stereolab, but in less a good way. I expect there is a big audience for this, but I'm not part of it.

I can only take so much of B&S. This was almost too much.

I struggle to describe how I feel about Belle & Sebastian. Some of it works for me, and some of it doesn't, and it's kind of hard to explain why. The title track on "If You're Feeling Sinister" is darling and lovely. A few other songs on here, and most of their top hits from other albums, hit that same vibe. I think it's something about being jaunty and jangly? I can't bring myself to go back through the whole album right now for a deeper analysis of the songs I didn't care for, but I do remember thinking on some of them that I sometimes dislike Stuart Murdoch's voice even more than Morrissey's (The Smiths was the day before). But how is that possible from the same guy I enjoy on "Another Sunny Day" and "The Boy With the Arab Strap?"

indie pop folk. 3.4/5 ok as background, decent instruments but voice is annoying sometimes

not my favorite

I didn't really get much from this. It's not bad, but I don't care for it.

It never really gets you going but you can admire the craft

Decent indie album, a bit lackluster in my opinion.

Favourite songs: the fox in the snow, mayfly, the stars of track and field Least favourite songs: seeing other people, if you're feeling sinister, me and the major The back half of this album was better than the front half. 3/5

To dedicate more than a couple of sentences to this album would be disproportionate to the impression it left on me. A pleasant if unremarkable listen.

It's good, but I always feel like they're trying to be clever and I'm skeptical.

I like the idea of Belle & Sebastian but the execution just kind of is boring for me. It's so indie it's almost to a fault. I'd be very into it in college, I'd imagine. Vocals are pretty unique and memorable but it's all just so low-key it doesn't do much for me.

轻快的乡村风格

listen

A pleasant indie album. Lots of tender, catchy songs that have that cozy energy that good indie albums have. I wouldn't mind listening to a song or two here, but an entire album of this stuff was just a bit too much of the same for me. Nothing wrong with it, but just not mind blowing. If I need some nice sentimental indie songs I’ll be sure to return to this one.

Feels a bit like The Kinks if they were a 90s band. I can only enjoy this type of music for like 20 minutes before it turns into background noise. The songs I heard while my attention was max were pretty good - nothing groundbreaking, but I enjoyed it. Strong 3/5, might have to come back to this one once I'm in a mood more adjacent with this album.

I like the vocals on this. The sound is smooth but overall I don’t find it especially interesting.

This was nice and cute. The album definitely has a vibe to it, and the horn arrangements help to add a lot of texture to these songs. Was this the most exciting music I've ever heard? No. But this defintely feels like a real cohesive album with a vision. A stronger vocal would have made this a better album for me.

Britpop vibes. Good melodies. Very relaxing.

Pleasant, melodic and lightweight. It's generally quite a floaty album with a laid back, late sixties floaty west coast vibe. Some tracks have a bit more urgency (like 'Me and The Major'). I hate to label it easy listening, but that's essentially what it is. It's quite good if you can get past the fey vocals and you're in the right mood but truth be told I have far better LPs of this ilk from the late sixties.

Nice. Far too nice. Terribly horrifically nice. Eminently forgettable, not bad, just not great.

Nice. Can imagine it being in a late 90s/early 00s film or sitcom happy summer montage. Would listen to it again.

Jumped a lot between tolerating and absolutely loathing the singer's voice. Very chill and easy to listen to album, which isn't my usual taste (progressive metal). I've never been a lyrically focused person, so the little additions of brass and harmonica in some songs did help to make the overall listening experience a little more interesting. Very middle of the road album from first listen. No standout tracks, but also no stinkers I was desperate to skip. 3/5

Put me to sleep

I did not expect an album called "If you're feeling sinister" and featuring a picture of a woman pondering over The Trial (I love Kafka) to start out with a song named "The Stars of Track & Field" that is actually about cherry underwear. What to make of it? The first couple songs had me thinking it might be OK but Me and the Major made me think uh-oh. But overall it is pretty and sounds great, I appreciate that I could understand the lyrics. That said, it is a little downbeat for me, at least today.

It's okay. A mix of decent songwriting, but the whole thing can feel a bit bland

This trundled along rather nicely. Nothing too groundbreaking - just some decent tunes played out at a rolling pace. It needs a little more bite to get me fully signed up. But I like the almost disposable take it or leave it approach.

Genre: Chamber Pop 3/5 Clearly influential, and clearly sounds like an album beloved by those stuck in the 1990s, but overall not too exciting, Belle and Sebastian's If You're Feeling Sinister is a decent pop album all things considered. With shades of Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Donovan, and the Rolling Stones, this album sounds like what preceded it almost as much as what followed it. One of my favorite albums throughout this exercise is Sufjan Stevens' Illinois, and this is clearly an album he took a lot of inspiration from. While I can appreciate it for being influential in its genre, it certainly doesn't have the same emotional highs as an album like Illinois, and sadly stays pretty flat throughout the majority of the album. Stuart Murdoch has a nice, melancholy kind of voice on him, and it does a lot for these tunes, as most of these folksy arrangements desperately need something to liven it up. The Stars of Track and Field is a nice intro, but about 1 minute and a half too long, and the title track is another decent track, with some great added production, that just unfortunately hangs around for a little too long. Songs like Me and the Major and The Boy Done Wrong Again never truly get off the ground, and both end up sounding like the soundtrack to a Nicholas Sparks movie. Decent overall, and totally inoffensive, but none too special.

It's mellow. It's melodramatic. It's folky. It's dreamy. It has a lot of imagery that I can't really understand. And (maybe) a lot of social references that I don't get. I mean, why is Bob Dylan in the movies? And what kind of sound does a fox in the snow make?

I really do like the Belle & Sebastian style, though the album is a bit up and down for me. It's almost a 4 but i think it sits at a 3 simply because i don't really like enough of the tracks. Get Me Away and Seeing Other People are really great... the others start to drop a bit from this.

Musically lovely, and a very nice listen overall. Not a fan of Stuart Murdoch's affected, Ray Davies-light style of vocal. Fave Songs: Me and the Major; Get Me Away from Here, I'm Dying; Like Dylan in the Movies; The Boy Done Wrong Again; The Stars of Track and Field

Jingly Indgly

Pretty good Folk pop

Good mellow mood music

Well, it's not all "sad bastard music," as Jack Black called in in High Fidelity. But some of it is. I get a folky vibe from this album, like something that would have sprung out of the 60s. Good title. It's a jaunty, light, musical album, but that title track is a downer.

First listen. I’ve heard the Tigermilk album before because of this list. I think this one has a better vibe.

Fun early twee indie but they only get better from here

It was an ok listen overall, the themes of discovering oneself and experimentation in all kinds of forms. A witty insight into the youth of the mid-90s that takes some inspiration from the past and can undoubtedly inspire future generations. Best: If You're Feeling Sinister Worst: Like Dylan in the Movies

Soft, mellow acoustic sound. Faded into the background as I worked to be honest. I like the singers gentle vocals.

Pleasant indie music. Need to give more listens. 7/10

Never heard of Belle & Sebastian and must say they're not bad. Its very relaxing and pleasant music. If You're Feeling Sinister started really well but I started to lose interest by the end. Favourite songs were Seeing Other People and Me And The Major.

I didn’t enjoy this as much as Tiger Milk, but the singer’s sing song, matter of fact, sitting around a campfire approach is endearing and makes for an easy listen.

A little Velvet Underground, a little Nick Drake vibe. Twee AF.

An enjoyable album. The main vocalist's voice went from nice to grating depending on the mood I was in, so it's a fine line. Relatively calm and relaxed, overall a nice album.

Always thought B&S were a bit fey and lightweight back in the day (Murdoch's voice is not exactly a giant death metal baritone, is it?), though on listening to this album in full I find myself well disposed towards it. Maybe I've just aged into them or something. I don't know.

Nice and quite twee. It sounds a bit spare with mostly acoustic guitar and voice. Strings get my ears to perk up, and this could be a grower. But I'm not immediately inspired to return.

B&S are a gap in my knowledge. They came along during the period that I did not listen to new music, and I think I generally agreed (based on my ignorance of their work) with Jack Black's opinion in High Fidelity that they were \"old sad bastard music\". Maybe because I, too, am now an old sad bastard, I understand the appeal of this record now. I like to quick and dirty recording style, with a production style with ambitions towards a lush aesthetic (on a budget). It is clearly in the tradition that grows from the more whimsical end of the Velvet Underground's oeuvre, which appeals to me. It starts to wash over me a bit after a whole album, but enjoyed it more than I expected.

Even though I really like Belle and Sebastian, this is not the album for me. The lyrics are already great, but for me, Belle and Sebastian still had to grow musically which they more did on their albums following this, Tigermilk and especially The Boy With The Arab Strap.

Didn’t enjoy the music or vocals much. Kind of meh

A soothing listen that I doubt will annoy anyone. But it is incredibly average from all angles: songwriting, vocals, instrumentation, production. Nothing to really wow the lister.

Decent easy listening but fails to leave a bigger impression

Nice listen

sounded like smiths, not bad

6/10. Another cloudy day on the British Isles.

This was interesting but not sure if I would listen to it again.

I liked this better than the past installment but this band is still just not my thing. I think the tone of both music and singing get really monotonous through the length of an album.

If You're Feeling Sinister is certainly not one of my favorite Belle & Sebastian albums. The middle sector ("Like Dylan in the Movies", "The Fox in the Snow", "Get Me Away from Here, I'm Dying" and "If You're Feeling Sinister") is good, the other tracks are not that impressive.

not my favorite but still good

frekar svona mellow

I just don't like his voice that much.

Rating: 5/10

Nice album, but nothing standout or special for me. "Like Dylan in the Movies" was my favourite song on the album

I always think I’m going to love a band by this album more than I do.

Pop tranquilo, suave y melódico. Armonioso. Sin destacar especialmente, pero que se puede escuchar.

Like Dylan in the movies!

Sounds pretty similar to their other work, which I like. Definitely a nice album, but I somehow enjoyed it less. Maybe a bit pretentious?

It was alright

Feels like this band makes music exclusively for Wes Anderson films.

Really just an OK album for me. Nothing that made me go WOW, but nothing to make me turn it off.

Not bad some good songs but nothing memorable.

Some good songs A but relentlessly similar Shouldni add or remove a star for the styli phone?

Jeben ko i svaki njihov, al dost je davanja ocjena šakom i kapom, nastavljamo realno kao i do prije par dana.

Good, but boring at times. Favorite track is probably If You're Feeling Sinister

FOlky, led to all the indie garbage that came after. Decent tho

Jangly indie pop with often amusing lyrics telling tales of everyday life from the perspective of various characters. Reminiscent of the Smiths, but with less bite both lyrically and musically. A pleasant and interesting listen. 3.5/5.

I don’t really know a lot of it was boring but it also seemed chaotic in a way where they tried to just put a lot of sounds and instruments together to make it sound cool but I did like it overall

O segundo álbum destes senhores que tenho o prazer de ouvir. O Tigermilk pareceu me um album mais sólido. Este parece mais semelhante, mas não fica muito atrás do tigermilk. Nota: 5/10

This is the second Belle and Sebastian album that I've gotten on this list, and I enjoyed Tiger Milk a lot better. There wasn't anything wrong with this album, but it also felt really short and wasn't as interesting as their other work 3/5

Pretty middle of the road and generic indie music. Might have been more unique when released, but now sounds pretty bog standard.

No me gustó pero tampoco me disgustó. Tiene unas pinceladas interesantes.

Not my fav of theirs but some great songs

Ohhhhhhhh. This is what all those indie girls in college were listening to. I think I would like this more before this became a kind of manic pixie genre on to itself.

Pleasant chamber pop from the mid 90s - carefully crafted and delicately delivered, Belle & Sebastian succeed here on creating modern pop that stands the test of time

I like it, chilled out album that’s easy to listen to. Like the addition of some of the brass instruments but the album doesn’t really go anywhere.

Really nice album. Good lyrics and enjoyable acoustic vibe. Liked the introduction to the band too.

I liked the album. Not something that I would have stumbled upon myself. Highlights: Mayfly, Like Dylan in the Movies

some songs have interesting music but does feel a bit samey

Better than I thought it’d be. But probably won’t bother with it again.

I dig.

Original but not amazing.

Шотландский инди-поп-фолк. Буду изучать дальше.

Me and the Major and Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying are probably my two favorite pieces. Feels like a pretty good late night album.

Just a lovely feel good album. B&S are definitely a band for a hot summers day BBQ so listening to them when it’s horrible weather elicits some mixed feelings from me. Really nice though.

nice innit. i want to do a joke about them hacking their way into the list but its here on merit over most the stuff i've had to endure.

Solid - thought the lyrics were quite clever, title track was excellent. Would go nicely with a cuppa on a Sunday morning.

Nice calming album after the previous few. Definite closing-scene-in-a-tv-show-after-a-sad-cliffhanger vibes. Very basic instrumentation and sometimes a bit samey but good songwriting. Would put it on during a rainy Sunday morning but not much more.

Niet speciaal, maar genietbaar

At some point in college I remember a google or Yahoo! search for "bands like Arcade Fire" and Belle & Sebastian came up. With that framing, I was disappointed with their gentle sound and affectless vocals, and naturally put them on the shelf forever, except for a few enjoyable spins of The Boy With The Arab Strap. After listening to this record, I don't feel like I missed anything special with them. This is the soft corner of indie that I have a knee jerk reaction against, but there's no good reason. To go pop psychology on it, I think they make me think of a side of myself I don't always welcome - overly sensitive, mild, modest - and don't need a soundtrack for. It reminds me of seeing The Mountain Goats with Matt and Nick, and leaning to Matt and saying "these guys have no spine" (which btw I regret on a few levels, but most of all for poisoning a nice show with positive energy). I was too into Queens of the Stone Age at the time, B&S's polar opposite. The irony of this review is its exactly the type of inward rumination that Belle & Sebastian would write about. In the spirit of self acceptance, this is a lovely album. Pretty tunes. Fits in some odd space between Nick Drake and Morrissey. Somehow not emoting becomes emotoing. It's light. It's a bit precious. It's forgiving. It's sunny outside. B

Love Belle and Sebastian and their lispy British, gentle hipster anthems for the artsy set, set to upbeat major chord folk/rock/pop and talking about sad things. I find that their albums can be a combo of huge hits and huge misses, some songs blow me away, are almost perfect, others do nothing for me. This album is that album for me. A couple fives, a couple 4s, many 3s. The voice is charming, as always, the tunes mostly catchy, it’s a nice listen, however “The Boy With the Arab Strap” and especially “Dear Catastrophe Waitress” are so much better and are complete albums where almost everything is solid/catchy. Therefore, despite the few gems “Seeing Other People” and “If You’re Feeling Sinister,” this album is just mediocre.

🦀 Just songs that are on in indie movies about heartbreak and finding yourself. Maybe a guy is in love, with the quirky new girl, but you later find out he was touched by the P.E teacher when he was 6 and the quirky girl is his daughter. I might write that actually.

Pleasant

A little to soft spoken indie for me. Me and the Major was the standout.

This album was unknown to me,but I am a newbie to listening to an album from start to finish. I feel it like is was popular in it’s time, the late 90’s. The musicians were amazing. From guitar to trumpet to harmonica, and piano, I was impressed. I loved every tracts beat and calming effect. I was disappointed in most of the lyrics. My favorites were Don’t Look Back like Dylan in the Movies and Judy Dreams of Horses. On the whimsical side, I wonder how many of this bands’ members are parents of a Wiggles band member? It reminds me of an album to get the Wiggles out for adults. Calming and peaceful.

Just didn’t do much for me. Pleasant overall. I did like “Mayfly”. One of the songs reminded me of the Smiths but I couldn’t make the effort to go back and listen again. Ok.

not too bad of an album but not quite my cup of tea. could be better and its a little boring after a while

02/01 - Yesterday I worked on a few things in the manufacturing model before transitioning to the drum storage building. First, I worked on creating and adding the pipe guard to the model. Then I worked on moving all comments from past BBS to the 31Jan set. Lastly, I worked on moving UL details from the Apothecary model to the Train B model. I thought this album was pretty solid. Although the songs all sounds pretty much the same I really enjoyed the genre of the music and even saved a few of the songs. Seems like an album that was ahead of its time. My favorite songs were Get Me Away From Here, Im Dying and Me and the Major.

3.9 + A gentle and catchy collection of songs that explore romantic complications and such. Pretty novel in its sound and songs have some unexpected chord structures and sometimes take different directions in satisfying ways.

3.5 a goodun

sounded sweet and sad at first, but blended together. Liked a lot of the little background touches, but honestly didn't do much for me.

Enjoyable instrumentation. Like Dylan in the Movies and the title track are most notable highlights. However vocal delivery can become quite repititive at times. But overall it's a very good listen

Not my style - a little to much of a sarcastic/hipster tone to the singing style. I did like some of the guitar

Not my cup of tea but it was still a vibe

Alright. Not my cup log tea

Smooth peanut butter

Not bad

pretty ordinary, lacking lyrical imagination and musical inspiration

It was fine - nothing really stood out to me, except maybe Judy And The Dream Of Horses

Not a well known band in the Netherlands. There albums only stayed in the album top100 for 1 or 2 weeks. It was pleasant to listen to.

Voice reminds me of Matt Costa a bit Fox in the snow was nice and there's some big sax in Mayfly

Good folk album, but probably won't listen again

too slow for me

Pleasant enough

This is all a bit twee for me, though I understand the appeal. Best track: The Stars of Track & Field

A little too chill for me but good music regardless

Sweet, inoffensive stuff. Background music at best. But good background music

A bit twee and weedy, but nice tunes.

This was ok. Kind of generic sounding. 2/5

Maybe I wasn't in the mood, I was lifting ways of the time, but this album was relatively boring. I'm not an anti-indie guy, actually really enjoy the genre, but this was just blah

Very twee and gentle sounding, although the lyrics are not exactly that. It’s not horrid, but it is dull.

Meh...

Dorky hipster from 2000s vibes. Insert into any indie flick. I feel like I should be the target audience for this but have somehow never warmed up to it. A couple of ok tracks.

I’m aware how big this was and how much it influenced 90s and 2000s indie music. I’m aware how seemingly simple but actually complex the guitar is. I’m even willing to accept that there’s good lyrics and themes in the music. But fundamentally I don’t enjoy listening to their voices and it’s not an album I liked a lot. I’m fine being in the minority on this but I atand my ground here.

The last album of theirs I rated (Tigermilk) I was much more impressed by. I was worried about it being a bit indie wank, but it ultimately won me over with its diversity and creativity. This one is basically the same, just without the creativity and diversity. That is, It’s JUST indie wank. Soft, floaty, well-meaning, twee vocals, and no real variance across the whole album. With a few exceptions, all the songs pretty much sound the same to me. Unfortunately this one rubbed me up the wrong way a bit. No thanks.

Just a bit twee and too often boring for me

More bang average, self-important indie that I'll never spend another second of my life thinking about again.

I should be a fan, but I'm not.

More boring than I remember

This is not for me. Pretty dull and monotonous. Seems like he's trying to sound like Morissey but pulling it off

I guess I'm not a hipster - I just don't like them. Find them really boring. Always have 🤷‍♂️

This might be the cheekiest entry on the list. It's like the editors know there's too much 60s/70s flower power, ren faire shit on this list, so they snuck in a 90s abomination that essentially just sounds like 60s/70s flower power, ren faire shit.

I wasn’t a fan of the singers style of vocals. All the songs seemed to go forever and nothing really caught my attention and made me want to listen. Only track 6 Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying peaked my interest slightly. Probably won’t listen again.

Two days in a row with chamber pop / indie rock. This one is a bit more in the folk direction, with simple melodies but lush instrumentation. I found it a bit boring, but easy to listen to.

Cry baby music. But it’s ok.

I Don't have much German, but it is a wonderful language. There is one word in particular that means face in need of a fist. The singer's voice would create a new word that means a voice in need of a fist. It seems that this is the second album from Tegan and Sarah that I have encountered here, I would have been happy to stop after the 1st.

All sounds pleasant enough but didn't connect at all - these guys rarely do for me!

not sure if this is my jam tbh. the trumpets nice. so are the chord progressions, i just dont like the vocal style and drums guitar is cool. its not really an album to write home about tbh legendary fucking youtube comment on like dylan in the movies the lyrics are nice. highlights: if youre feeling sinister. i love catholic imagery. sorry

Didn't talk to me in the 90s and neither did now. Some nice moments but nothing that would make me listen to it for the third time. Also my daughter said it was boring. Two stars for relaxing production.

A band I've never really taken any notice of to be honest. having a go this morning though. I'm finding it dull and uninspiring, can't see me getting through all ten tracks....

Unremarkable

I've heard this one a few times over the years - I'm just not in to the singer's voice.

If you like wordsmith, you'll love this. I dont.

I never liked Belle and Sebastian. They are pretentious and their lyrics don't make any sense, but I listened to this anyway. I decided to read the lyrics for "The boy done wrong again" and really liked it. 1 out of 10 still isn't great, but maybe I should set aside superficial bias and listen more to the lyrics.

Whatever? All the work on it is competent and talented but I just don't really care for it overall, not really my style

Really just fine. Pretty similar throughout the album. 2.5/5

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..............................

I wanted to like this, but just found it kinda meh. It started alright, but then just kinda melted into a mushy, somewhat boring, whiny, amateurish kinda slog. Two stars.

The guy can’t sing

The reason the first song on this is my favourite is becaus they all sound exactly the same. This album was not too bad but had so little variety and felt overly reserved and meek to the point of me getting bored a third of the way through every song. They all end in exactly the same way, either a fade out or a two chord outro with the last lyric repeated four or so times. It is undeniably well produced, the mix had room to breathe, sat well and didn't sound grating in any way. It was consistent across all the songs. Overall, well produced, but the songwriting severely lacks variety. I can sort of see the appeal for one or two of these songs occasionally coming up in a playlist, but an entire album of them in one sitting was just uninteresting. Track scores: Track scores: The Stars of Track & Field 4/5 Seeing Other People 2/5 Me And The Major 2/5 Like Dylan in The Movies 3/5 The Fox in The Snow 2/5 Get Me Away from Here, I’m Dying 2/5 If You’re Feeling Sinister 3/5 Mayfly 2/5 The Boy Done Wrong Again 2/5 Judy and the Dream of Horses 2/5

2 sterne

Holy shit, this sucks. The editors are madly in love with '90's-'00's (especially British) indie rock. How boring. These bands have nothing substantive to say, contribute nothing interesting musically, and still come off as pretentious. Anyway, this 2* album should be removed in favor of Stone Temple Pilots' Core, which is a clear 4*.

This has to be one of the most indie albums of all time, if you can even quantify that kind of thing. It reminded me of music that some friends of mine would play in college, but I never really learned who it was. Maybe it was B&S, maybe it was this album. Unfortunately, the reason I never found out is probably the same as the reason I don't love it here- it's just a bit too boring for me. Is it bad? No, it's not. But it's also not that interesting to me. All of the tracks are built the same and have the same vibe. The only change is that some seem a little happy, while others are mostly sad. Without more going on, I didn't feel engaged or drawn in for the experience. Probably the most it got my attention was on the more-upbeat Mayfly, but even that was pretty subdued for the most part. I'd probably like the songs here more in a smaller sequence, or mixed up on a diverse playlist. As a whole, though, the melancholy is a bit much. I think I've realized from this list that these rainy-day albums don't do a lot for me (at least not on normal days). All told, this was a fine enough album. It's just too meh for me to say very much good about it. Overall: 2.3/5

Dnf, mid.

Didn’t really care for this one. The vocals were nice but I don’t even remember not rating it in the first place. I listened twice and still have no recollection of what was in it.

Nick drake clone? It's alright but not great.

Meh, just dull.

Like Dylan in the Movies Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying

Seeing Other People If You’re Feeling Sinister The Boy Done Wrong Again

Not their best

I thought this one was worse than the other B&S entry, same boring early 00’s sound but less interesting subject matter. Maybe I missed it but there doesn’t seem to be anything going on of note, it just sounds like background music for a crappy commercial 1.7

weird vocals

3/3 meh album

Some of the tunes are quite lovely. particularly on seeing other people. But then that voice comes in, and I want it to be over.

I cannot explain why I am not a fan of this one, the songwriting and production are great, it has some great motifs, but overall it feels so beige.

I didn’t mind this album although the lyrics seemed a bit much.

This fucking list makes me look like I hate music

This album was a chore to listen to. I hate his voice. The music is bland and boring. It’s incredibly hard to get through the beginning of the songs. The songs get better later into them once the pace picks up, but still mediocre at best.

Beetje saai

Not really for me. It's pleasant, but doesn't do much for me, I had mostly zoned out around the middle of the album. I've heard a few of their tracks in the past, never really felt the need to listen to them.

Never has the vibe of a band music matched the vibe of their name. I thought this album was a field of flowers, cause I skipped through it.

And once again, an album I have no idea how this could end on this list. Boring, meandering storytelling, nothing remotely memorable (besides the boredom).

I've never listened to a Belle and Sebastian album start-to-finish before. This just isn't grabbing me. I feel bored, and frequently it sounds like the singer is bored with the music too.

Honestly, I don't remember listening to this yesterday, however I know I did, therefore getting a 2 rating

Could not get into this. Not bad, just not my thing

So boring.

Oh I'm feeling sinister alright. I'm not normal. I'm an absolute freak

легкий ненавязчивый поп без изысков. Скучно
