Reviews (page 13 of 13)
No.
Oh dear
Not exactly easy listening or a repeat track.
A jazz album with very impressive performances, but there weren't really any parts that stood out to me as being catchy or interesting or particularly enjoyable to listen to. It feels very improvised, experimental and lacking structure. Maybe I'd warm to it more with another listen but I didn't enjoy the first one.
This just sets my whole mental health off to a new level. Probably wasn’t the day to listen, a Monday. As jazz goes fair enough, hands down, great talent,I’m not a jazz person myself I find it very hard to listen to if it’s not a live performance. Heads on fire
first song impression—sounds like flies are having a drunken relay race around my head or a middle school band starting their warm-ups at different times. second song impression—sounds better and slightly more cohesive. a good song to sway to…. nevermind the beat keeps changing dramatically. third song impression—i’m so incredibly confused not finishing the rest
Sorry Charles, it’s not you, it’s me.
god i really dont like jazz
I had to bail halfway through the 4th track because I started getting a headache 🫠 there are some nice riffs happening but wow they are drowned out by every musician trying to play as loud as possible. I would personally deliver a mute to the trumpeter if I knew where to take it.
Nei fyfaen. Det her e ikke noe for me.
really over stimulating jazz. couldn’t rly listen to it tbh
Chaotic and not really musical
Tough jazz for me
Justnot for me
nei fy faen
Hate jazz
Much of the same old jazz from Mingus but with a little flamenco flare. Black Saint was slightly more entertaining then previous jazz entries but still blah. Maybe needed a some more sinner lady to spice it up...1.18 stars.
I like the the name Charles Mingus. I am not into the music that he makes apparently. A bunch of horns and squeaks spread out of 40 minutes does little to convince me this is peak jazz in any way. So many of these albums from the jazz's so-called golden era are just a bunch of skippable noise for the most part. 1.32 stars
I'm Not the Biggest fan I attempted to do my stats but couldn't get past the second song There's no lyrics :(
im not listening to this
Not my jam
I don't get it. I just don't get it. I see the word "cacophony" used a lot in reviews, both positive and negative. That's exactly what much of this felt like to me, but very much in a negative way. This did nothing but confound me. This has been my least favorite album of this project so far. I greatly respect the talent of the musicians, but I just did not enjoy this one.
Absolutely Mingus. This was the dictionary definition of hard work and stressful. You get that there's loads of talent in there, but why is no-one suggesting that maybe everyone doesn't need to break the world notes-per-minute record for a solid 39 minutes? Less is more Charles! This is bad jazz.
I did not like this album. It didn’t fit my style of music
Musical masochism.
Ich mag Jazz aber das war mir zu verkopft
A very loud and messy jazz album that was almost a chore to sit through. This one is about 40 minutes too long
Jazz
Nein
I guess I respect the groundbreaking nature of this but the musical sensation was awful and could not listen
Screeching Sax. No more please. DNF. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): ⭐ Didn't like it. Saved no tracks.
Rein instrumental. Bisher das schlechteste Album der Reihe
We’ve been through this - I don’t like jazz.
Totalt ointresserant för mig tyvärr.
NO MORE FUCKING JAZZ
Clearly I’m not cut out for jazz as this was a mess for me. I enjoyed the Spanish style guitar interludes but otherwise found the entire thing tough to follow and enjoy. 1/5
This music was overwhelming for me.
Chaotic. Occasionally discordant-feeling. Improvisational vibe. Track #2… so it’s really gonna be like this the whole way through, huh? Hard to believe this was only 5 years before In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. What a diverse musical culture this country has. Track 4’s Spanish guitar was unexpected and made me smile haha! I’ve heard track 4 sampled in other songs, I’m sure of it. Around the 5:45/6 min mark. Very experimental album. Overall did not enjoy.
Not a fan, sounds kind of annoying
so this is probably objectively a good album but it’s just so not my style of music unfortunately i only made it through the first 2 songs
Музыка: 3/10 Разнообразие: 5/10 Тематика и вайб: 2/10 Цепляемость (отдельные песни зашли): 1/10 Реиграбельность (можно ли рандомно врубить на фон): 2/10 Итог: 2.6
Jazzy jazz. If you like jazz, you’ll like this album. Blah blah jazz, jazz blah blah. Blah blah blah blah. It all sounds the same. 1001 album worthy: no - 106/199
p63. 1963. 1 star. Jazz :( sounds like the soundtrack to a bad late 1950s British gangster film. Technically proficient but... meh.
Not my thing.
This reminded me why I never listen to pure jazz
Not a fan of jazz
About as tolerable as a jazz ballet can be. Not my thing in the slightest. At least it isn't too long.
Not my jam, I know this before I even listen based on my disinterest in Jazz. I know the name, it's just not a genre I enjoy or understand. It's chaotic noise, meet in the middle for a minute, and go separate your ways again. I'm not mathematical, I'm not an musician, but I have an ear for music, to appreciate Jazz you have to be both I believe. I went to recording school and all my teachers whether they played rock or country all appreciated Jazz. Being a player helps you understand and This was so horn heavy and in a way I find ugly and cumbersome, throw in the piano that doesn't even go with the song. I got no enjoyment from listening to this, none. 1 star as I'm sure he's a good musician and master of his art, I just hated every minute of it. No hits, no staying power, small listen count for a 60 yr old record and only Jazz aficionados would find this rewarding.
Well played but boring.
I like house, rap, and country music. Not this
I really struggled with this album. I'm someone who likes jazz, but this was something else. It was a nightmare of cacophonous noise that rarely met up for anything pleasing. I wanted to like the more melodic moments, but I couldn't enjoy them because they were sandwiched between screeching horns or rhythm players doing their own thing as loudly as possible.
Christ, I hate jazz, and today I learned that avant-garde jazz is even worse than the other kinds. I thought this was sprawling mess of wtf?!? It’s just too crazy, and I really don’t think that avant-garde is my kind of jive. I don’t like it, I don’t want to like it, and I am not going to like it.
Not my type of music
Felt like Spongebob, trying to develop a taste for free form jazz. I didn't succeed.
Random noise
It’s jazz idc about jazz
ingen lyrics🖕🖕
Way too much for what I was doing
Not my cup of tea.
A half dozen or more instruments and artists, each doing their own thing - walking over one another to create a muddied pool of sound with no discernable flow. Occasionally a melody would bubble to the surface as two or three of the musicians came together (or the others stopped playing). But these moments were fleeting as the wall of noise returned. I enjoy some jazz, but I won't listen to this again.
I don't get it. It was just a lot of noise. Would probably have been excellent if they weren't all on top of each other.
Nah
Obviously extremely talented, but did nothing for me. I don't think I have much of an appreciation for instrumental jazz personally. There were some beautiful piano moments in here, though.
Oof.
Sounds a bit disjointed and cacophonous
WTF? How do people listen to Jazz? Started out bad and never got better! Can you add a 0 stars option?
Jazz ain't my thing
la la land was right, I need to see jazz to actually fell it
The jazz trumpet sounds like a fart.
Is the band supposed to be warming up for the whole album? Who needs water boarding when this album exists …
I know, I know that jazz is the foundation of all rock music and the bedrock of human culture and all that other crap that old white guys on NPR say. But, damn, it's also the wellspring of basically I hate in rock: outwardly flashy showmanship for the sake of showmanship, structure that's all over the place, "music for musicians," and all the other chin-scratching concerns of ponderous quasi-intellectual music praise.
nigger
Hmmm… Jazz…! Not for me, there were some element that I enjoyed, but they were for about 6 seconds before the song changed again! Creative but no structure imo!
I’ve often felt like jazz in general is a collection of talented musicians who want to flex their talents at how quickly they can play notes, over play a riff, or put together a collection of notes and time signatures that don’t make a good melody, but are good for the fact that they don’t make a good melody. This album hasn’t swayed me from that position one bit. It’s all a collection of musicians flexing what they can do in an ensemble setting. A cornucopia of noise. Hot garbage.
Not for me. Too crazy jazzy
The 60s was not a good decade for jazz or ballet and this is a 60s jazz ballet.
Not my style
Absolute garbage. I hate jazz on principle for the most part but this is even worse than the norm. Sounds like somebody who just ate a half dozen bean burritos from Taco Bell farting into a microphone.
Sorry this one just didn’t capture me. The John Coltrane jazz album was so good and I had high hopes for this jazz album but there was nothing that stood out to me and a lot of it sounded like cat screeching. Again sorry. But it just wasn’t for me.
Repetitive musical motifs adapt and take on new meanings as the improvisation and rhythms around them constantly evolve and alter the musical context, like shifting river of mercury weaving it's way down a gentle incline. It's intriguing stuff and the performances are sublime. It's also - to this listener - dull as dishwater. More interesting than the only Miles Davis entry I have encountered thus far, but every bit as inaccessible to my tastes in music, I'm afraid.
Sorry, I just fucking hate jazz. it breaks my brain, makes me feel anxious, I can't focus or think straight with it on.
Oof - not for me.
Interesting Jazz but not my thing
Not for me
I mean this with all sincerity: FUCK jazz Sadly I can’t rate lower than 1
Not my bag
If jazz is your thing, you'll like it.
Jeezo, that would drive you up the fucking wall !
I'm sure that the Avant-garde jazz folks love this album. I can tell the musicians are talented, but.... It sounds like a bunch of folks on stage just noodling away with their instruments. I liked the couple of bits of flamenco guitar in there, but that was an accent on one piece, not even enough to say it made up a song. For me, 1/5. Please, no more jazz.
I'm as uncultured as ultra mega processed milk. God I hated this.
No me gusta el jazz, puede que sea uno de los motivos por los que no entiendo el disco. No suena bien en mis oídos, al menos de momento... imagino que con más escuchas podré apreciarlo mejor.
I don't get it. It's like no one told these guys they're a band and they're just out there playing 4 separate songs at once. There's seconds that sound like music and then it goes back to noise. Maybe I'm just too dumb to get it.
Experimental Jazz. Experiment failed in an overbearing, dissonant, disturbing manner.
Learned today that experimental jazz is definitely not my thing. From a talent angle though, this was definitely impressive.
Too improvisational for my liking
Dramatic and interesting, but kind of anxiety-inducing. Frenetic.
Not for me. Sorry
didnt listen
01) Track A – Solo Dancer - 4,0 02) Track B – Duet Solo Dancers - 3,5 03) Track C – Group Dancers - 3,0 04) Mode D – Trio and Group Dancers Mode E – Single Solos and Group Dance Mode F – Group and Solo Dance - 2,0 TOTAL: 3,13 (31/100)
How does rubbish like this sell? All the jazz heads will sneer at my lack of sophistication, but the emperor still has no clothes. This is trash. It's pointless. There's the occasional melodic bit, but those are lifted from elsewhere. It's mainly just people playing random snatches of music, or imitating sirens or the like. The musicians are clearly good, but what a waste of their talent.
Me pareció bastante aburrido. Solo le encontré un poco de disfrute mientras manejaba por un pueblito por el Olympic National Park, donde podría haber sido una ambientación de una escena de una película.
could i write poetry to this? n
I like a lot of Mingus, especially the song Moanin, and the album Mingus ah um. This one is just too "experimental" for me. I found the whole thing irritating.
An extremely tough listen. Like listening to someone scrape their nails down a blackboard 🤮
Like nails on a chalkboard 1 ⭐️
This is jazz, not into this album at all
Cool, an entire album that sounds like the orchestra warming up before they actually play songs. You know songs, those things with some structure, melodies, and other things that make you actually WANT to listen to it. I just don't get jazz, especially this type, at all.
1 - I’m sure this was revolutionary for its time, and it seems like there’s a lot of talent behind it, but my god why 39 minutes of pure jazz no vocals or anything. Couldn’t be further from what I like
Unlistenable to my ear
I don't understand jaz. It puts me in a bad mood. I listened to this album in its entirety. The first track sounded like a bunch of kids tuning their instruments, and it just went downhill from there. To my ears, it's just messy, repetitive noise and it made me want to punch something.
not that it's not good, just not for me right now
What am I listening too? This sounds like somebody put multiple musicians in one room that didn't hear each other and just played what they wanted. Didn't finished it...
I don't get jazz at all. Play some random nonsense that sounds bad and goes nowhere. Zero redeeming features. Awful.
Started to listen and made it through the first one, much too jazzy and instrumental for me
I was stressed out before I started this, and now feel decidedly worse. This is not what I needed today. I enjoy dream pop (e.g. Julee Cruise) and I did hear the occasional low tempo, moody section but for the most part it sounded like that bastard Jerry made poor Tom stick his fingers in the power socket again.
Absolute crap. Sound like 4 year olds having a jam session.
Not a jazz fan, apparently.
Did not like this collection of sounds.
no, not today!
Do people actually listen to this? Can I vote 0 stars? Did they pull non-musicians of the street, put instruments in their hands, and say play all togethere? Blah!
Reminds me of being in the band room in high school before practice started and everyone is just aimlessly noodling
I´m not into jazz. And this album is even more overtwisted than others. 🤯 Some nice tunes but in general no pleasure to listen to for me. 1,5
That's not my taste in musik.
Would give this 0 stars if I could. Just noise. I cannot understand why people would like this.
This is the worst kind of jazz for me. No beginning, no middle and seemingly no end. It just meanders on like they are warming up their instruments before the show begins. But the show never did begin.
It's jazz and to make things worse it's avant-garde jazz, which means it sounds like a collection of random noises played by "musicians" who were in different locations at different times.
It's... jazzy .. I hate jazz. This isn't even good enough for me to recommend to people who like jazz.
No
I’m just not into jazz, no matter how much this challenge will try to make me be into it. Just not my thing
Chaotic jazz.....1.5
Weird
Nope
No
Too chaotic for me. It was not an enjoyable listen for me and I do not think it is a relevant record, so it's under the bar compared to the rest of albums in this experience.
Not for meeeee
This must be what other people experience when they hear heavy metal and say "it's just noise". I gave it a go but honestly it was like listening to Jez try and play the saxophone for half an hour. Not for me.
I gave it a good go, sadly Jazz, much like mushrooms, is just not for me
I like some jazz albums, but this one was not it for me Top tracks: None
Melkein kiinnostavaa siinä määrin kuin bluesia. 1+
Fuck you you fucking fucker, its Jazzzzzzz
Yikes. While I enjoyed the movie “Whiplash”, generally speaking full-on Jazz is just not my bag. I would choose to chill with some SD 10/10 times over this. .5/5 rounding up.
Can't even scrub through this. 1001 albums to never listen to.
It's the genre, not the ablum
Sehr experimentell.
Fuck this is getting bad
0-1
Maybe great, but nothing I am able to listen
I’ll say one thing about this album…it is definitely JAZZ. .25/5
Je ne comprends décidément pas le jazz... J'ai l'impression qu'il n'y a pas de cohérence, pas d'harmonie mais un empilement de sons pas cohérents.
This was a lot of chaos
Most jazz sounds very random to me. 1/5
Nope
Okay! Alright! Enough of that!... I've suffered through the first track on this album. It literally sounds like music the CIA would use to torture & interrogate terrorists using sleep deprivation. This shit ain't for me. Fuck jazz. 👎👎
Thank the gods this only had 4 tracks! I couldn't take much more of the cacophony. Couldn't finish most of the songs because of the extreme discord.
Wow! I remember the first time I heard this type of music, I thought it was a mess. All this sounds that no matter how I tried I could understand why someone thought this sounded good. That was probably 45-50 years ago and today I still feel the same way. But to each their own. Different strokes for different folks.
i did not enjoy this
To say Charlie Mingus is an extremely talented individual is an understatement. With that out of the way if I never hear this album again it will be too soon, minutes of my life I will never get back
Every jazz album I'm forced to endure further solidifies my hate for the genre.
Heavy jazz, not my prefernce
Es raro. Parece todo un solo tema. Aburre. No lo compraría nunca. No me gustó.
I would say that this whole album was off-key and very annoying, and we struggled listening through the whole thing. Yes, it was a good thing that there were only 4 songs but also they were sooooo long, we may as well have listened to 15 songs. I like jazz music and I find it very smooth and relaxing sometimes, but this was a bit too much :D
Jazz 🤮
couldn't do it, no disrespect to mr. mingus
Crazy jazz. Not for me.
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is undoubtedly avant-garde and showcases impressive improvisational skills from highly skilled musicians. It was truly ahead of its time, offering freeform jazz with remarkably cohesive tunes. While I appreciate its skill and influence, I personally found it challenging to connect with, as I have yet to find a jazz musician I resonate with. I'd rate it a 4 for its artistic merit and influence, but personally, it's a 1 as it doesn't align with my preferences for repeated listening. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None
Too limited in the instruments for me. Or I donno, just a bit boring.
I’m not a fan of jazz in general but for some reason this album felt even worse than usual
no thanks
Jazz is the worst
Not my jam although better than John Coltrane.
I might just not be sophisticated enough for this type of music. For me there are just too many attention-competing sounds going on at the same time to be able to enjoy it.
Poor
4 tracks of awful noise, not for me at all, I'm confused about how this made the list!! easy 1 star or maybe even 0
Eh. It sounded like a nightmare to me. Chaotic. There were some songs that I could stomach for a minute, but couldn’t listen to the whole thing. I tried.
jazz...
Nah
just bad
Wasn’t my cup of tea.
Not for me
Well, sonofabitch. You get me all worked up with the previous album, then hit me with 4, 10 minute songs that sound like a bunch of blaring horns. I swear this list just tries to piss me off at times. Congrats. You found success. F off with this noise. At least I see Zeppelin on the horizon. It's better than the Suicide band, but not by a lot. I'll go 1.5, but it's still going to be scored 1 1.5
Jazz
Far too sexy for me
There are 2 types of jazz and they’re both shit
Has occasional glimmers of the band coming together, but so much of it was a grating, discordant cacophony. Exhausting. Painful.
Some people say they don't understand jazz. This album helped me realize I am one of those people.
'Chaotic' is the only word that comes to mind
Nope ! Really and truly not my cup of tea. A racket ! 1*
To chippy to lively for my current phase. I guess it’s true you have to grow into the jazz.
no this gave me a headache sorry mr mingus:(
BORING. I don't even know of an occasion where you would play that!
Too Jazzy for me! I was tired and jet lagged when listening to this and it just grated on me. Probably didn't give it a fair shout, but not sure how much more I would've enjoyed it anyway
Can’t hack this, or almost any jazz really.
This is probably good jazz but I don’t like jazz.
No, no, no, nooooo, God no
i'm sure this is a piece of art, but this feels like anxiety noise
Sämst hittills👎
Bad!
My family asked me to turn this off. I concur.
This was painful. I admire those of you that can appreciate the sound of 29 (?) instruments all playing different songs at the same time but it’s a ‘No thanks’ from me.
Nope, dit kan ik welgeteld 1 nummer aanhoren.
Leuk al die instrumenten die zo virtuoos bespeeld worden. Verder niet te doen.
Jazz...
Nope
This kind of jazz gives me the headache.
The words Collective improvisation and Free jazz fill me with horror and frustration simultaneously. I once had a friend who was in an improvisational jazz band. They used to play every week in a room above a pub. Out of loyalty, I used to go and support said friend. After the first week, I realised that if I did not have something to occupy my hands and brain I would go mad. So I gathered all my clothes that needed mending or buttons that needed sewing and I used to sit in the crowd repairing clothing. Otherwise I would’ve found being there unbearable. I feel like we’ve had overkill on the jazz lately but that’s because it doesn’t speak to me. Every time I think that I can be swayed to like the music and maybe get into a tune, it turns into a syncopated discordant mess. I understand that Mingus is a revered genius, and I may be an unsophisticated heathen but I just want to scream and bang my head against a wall. Another jazz-loving friend used to tell me that jazz opens the soul and encourages you to share your deepest, emotional experiences with others. I find alcohol does that just as well.
This is great music for people who readily relate to emperors who love new clothes that only they can see. This was what my high school jazz band sounded like when they were warming up to play actual music. Save yourself 40 minutes by listening to the first 10 seconds and then shutting it off.
I appreciate jazz and free flowing jam sessions but this is just a train wreck.
What was that I just listened to?
Mode D - Trio em 2:00 tem uma guitarra espanhola ou banjo legal.
Jazz it’s ok
From the start this is wheezy, aimless, painful to listen to. Like an orchestra tuning up for half an hour, yet all seemingly out of key with each other. It's stuff like this that gives Jazz its terrible reputation. Moments of Track B and C almost have a tune but then seem to lose interest like a puppy with ADHD. It's not for me.
jazz eller rass? Rass.
Not for me.
I was looking forward to this, never having knowingly heard Mingus before. But this just washed over me, and nothing jumped out from it. I guess I just don’t really ‘get’ jazz.
It was a bit of a racket tbh. Did me head in.
This just made me very depressed both times listening. I get the musicians involved are talented and you would have to love avant-garde jazz to some degree, but I just couldn't get on board. It also didn't help every song sounded exactly the same except for an added focus of a particular instrument here and there. It's a bit like eating the same meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner with each serving having one different ingredient.
1/5 it got annoying at some point.
I guess it is a taste thing but I really did not like this.
Didn't enjoy this. 1/5 stars.
It might be the great, but it's jazz
Struggled with this as it's not really my thing, the final track was the easiest to listen to
🎷🎹🎺
Don't understand freeform jazz. I've tried - I even went to a jazz club specially to try it. Had a great time but not because of the jazz.
So lost in it’s own cleverness that it forgets to be even remotely interesting.
Not my thing
It’s a no from me.
A cacophony. When everyone is doing their solo at the same time, then nobody is doing a solo. "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" by Mingus, is 10x better than every track on this album, but it's not on this album.
Yesterday I was at a Speakeasy and today I'm in a jazz club. I love it, love these vibes. It's 10am but I guess I need to make a cocktail. I was very overwhelmed by this album. I'm not typically listening to jazz on a day-to-day and there were some parts that struck me like \"the band is warming up\". That was a little off-putting to me as a non-listener.
Too weird
I like jazz, and I can dig some pretty avant-gaurde stuff, but this was quite hard to listen to. Very few times could I even understand where the music was going, and sounded like the instruments weren't even playing with each other. Every once in a while there would be a nice groove, but it was just a little jarring.
“Jazz is stupid, I mean just play the right notes” - Angela Martin
Mingus? More like dingus. 🙃
Absolute nonsense! Every single member of the band is playing a different song. I’m sure they’re all having fun, but unfortunately, I wasn’t!
