Reviews (page 11 of 13)

This album is four songs, 39 minutes. I got through the first three songs without enjoying much. When the fourth song started and I noticed it was 18 minutes long. I may have just given up. 1.6 outta 5

Unpleasant

This was cacophonous. Freeform Jazz? It sounded like no one was playing the same song.

This album was quite experimental, even for a genre like jazz. Charles Mingus is an absolute legend in this genre, so I understand the placement on this list. But this was a little hard to follow and I consider myself a jazz enjoyer.

If I'm ever playing a game with a confusing drug screen where pink panther keeps jumping out and opening doors, for them to be a cartoon world that you spiral into, I'll think of this b

The music was enjoyable and there was clear talent, but I am just not too interested in Jazz. I found it hard to concentrate on and my mind kept drifting away

Once again, I still don't get jazz. This album is a bit worse than other jazz albums I've listened to on the list. It seems to be all over the place, like everyone is just playing whatever they want. The musicians are talented, but I just don't get the music.

well yeah It's a jazz album

I'm not really a fan of modern jazz so although this is clearly talented playing, it just sounds like discordant noise to me. Wasted on me totally I'm afraid

Difficult for focused listening because of the rehearsability of musical syllables (however, not as long as Klaus Schulze's). Also pointless and too complex to listen in the background because of the very essence of the album - experiments with sound searching, the use of instruments atypical for jazz, and oversaturation with an inharmonious avant-garde sound (in some brief moments it even seems more like some kind of "classic noise"). It might be a revolutional album for its time, but it didn't work out for me.

Kinda alarming, kinda off-putting. Feel like a scheming villain. The name ‘Mingus’ really matches the vibe but I don’t know why.

Very jazz. All over the place but enjoyable. 5/10

A tale of two halves. After 3 minutes, I was waiting for it to be done. Those first two sections are, for lack of a better term, awful. I would never subject my ears to that again. But then we get to the last two tracks and it changes significantly. Those weren't just fine, they were genuinely amazing. The 18 minute section might just be my favorite. I have never ran into the problem before. Half the album is bad and the other half is great. What to do what to do. Well, you already know what I did, but I don't. I guess I'll find out tomorrow!

It’s the black Olive of music. Some people aren’t going to like it and other people are going to say it’s because they have an unsophisticated palette.

not fun to listen

Jazz. Jazzety jazzy jim jam jazz. Yeah. I, uh, do not understand jazz. I've tried. Many times. Jazzamatazz. Jeepy joopy jazz. Jazz.

Still hate jazz

I think I prefer more subtler jazz than this. This was loud, and frankly often annoying. Still it had good parts for sure

This album was good, very groovy and chill, listening to it while driving made me feel rich

Not bad

This started out like such an interesting hybrid of mid-century jazz, orchestra leader jazz, early 20th classical, and world music. But I got frustrated because every time the music got really REALLY interesting, it reverted to a pretty big band motif. Is it bad to say I wish it had gone weirder?

Like when you say to children you need to keep trying olives because you'll grow to like them, I keep trying Jazz. Still not for me.

I get it, but after the 2nd track it was a struggle

Listened Before? N Ehhhhhh.... I'm sure it's a masterpiece but I didn't listen to much of it. I'm getting kind of burnt on experimental jazz doing this list. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Track A

Reminds me of an American film where they are driving through New York overnight. The lights and low lifes flashing by and moody. Not really my cup of tea but I can see why others might dig it.

"The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" had interesting classical music influence that I have not seen in jazz before, but unfortunately it was still instrumental jazz. It's great for 10 minutes, not for a whole album.

Instrumental jazz makes it tough to give anything above two stars, but this sure was groovy. I just wish there was something more than a standardized tempo for 40 minutes of instrumentation to keep me engaged, but then it wouldn't be instrumental jazz and that's really just my problem.

Good Jazz. Short album appreciate the history lesson. Beyond that it’s not for me. 4.6

Jag har faktiskt gett den chans, en spännande värld att gå in i, men inget för mig.

Appreciate the skill but ends up sounding like noise

Sometimes I think jazz is what happens when a musician knows too much about music. It's an expression of expertise and a force of will. I listen to some pretty niche shit that others wouldn't tolerate. I also love Steely Dan. I get why this stuff exists. I respect it but do not find it enjoyable to listen to.

Still don't get jazz. Can appreciate the snippets but fail to see the overall picture or journey. I feel that I'm open to most things - but this just makes me feel a bit stoopid as I just don't get it.

Amazing musicianship but I found this VERY stressful to listen to.

Some good jazz, especially the third track. Mid to late 2s

Another album where there is loads of energy in the tracks. Charles Mingus has a really strong presence in every song and I reckon if you are into jazz it would be pretty special to have watched him live jamming away. I don’t really like the genre though and I know I’m sort of “missing the point” when listening. Overall I found it an ok listen but the final 18 min track was a struggle, each crescendo felt like an attack on my uneducated ears. I’m just too basic so apologies jazz fans.

hmm moody one and album opens on quite a frantic note. Lots of Jazz styles in this as already by track 2 we have a something different softer yet still maintaining the soft turmoil which then evaporates back to frenzied motion. It's a bit like taking all the old smoozy sections of James bond and collating them into one frantic album of action and misogyny. Just without the clues of the visuals it seems a little lost. Clearly some excellent sections but as a concept doesn't quite land for me as a little aggressive for my delicate lobes and mental state!

I love jazz! I do not love this album! For me, at least, it's too programmatic/soundtracky. Gimmie some goddamn bop. Gimmie some groove. Take that bass for a walk, for cryin out loud! Nothing about this is sticking with me. 2/5 because they players obviously have massive skill.

I just don’t really have a lot of feelings about jazz

I don't listen to much jazz and I def have never heard of Mingus or this album. It's a cute album cover and I like the poem line. Track A: The weird t-t-t-t- sound at the beginning is a little aggressive to me. But that's ok because it soon falls into this mix of nice, full music. B: I enjoyed this because at the beginning it sounded like a beautiful duet but then became this exciting chaos! C: It was fine. I didn't care so much. D: I think this was the best. I really liked the sort of Latin sound at the beginning. But it's way too long. I don't have the attention span for this sort of album. I don't like jazz that much and I definitely like when songs have people singing. So even though I did enjoy listening to this music plenty of the time and I'm sure it's really great for a lot of people, I'd probably never reach for it the same way I've only ever reached for that album from the Bill Evans Trio a couple of times.

J - 2/5 Best Track - "Solo Dancer" F - DNL

Gnöljazz.

This album, although I'm sure it's great was work to listen to. I may just need to grow my appreciation of jazz

I don't really get it. It's definitely music but not something I really enjoyed listening to.

I think jazz music is just not for me

*Short jazz album. *Good stuff, but need to revisit to give it a better listen - just had it on in the background. RATING - 6/10

It’s just too disjointed and all over the place for me. Wish I was cool enough to like it.

No sé si me termina de gustar, muy monótono como si solo tocaran instrumentos de forma enérgica sin decirme nada

Boring

Interesting one. When I first opened the album I was surprised to see only 4 tracks and thought it'd be a short one, only to see the last track Mode D / E / F is almost 19 minutes in length lol. Unfortunately I just don't seem to really get it. Often, a lot of things were going on at once and I didn't quite see how it fit together; other times weren't as bad, but then I was waiting for a satisfying progression that never came about. I think there's a world where I can come to appreciate this album more, I did relisten to the final track a short while after the initial album listen and it did bear more fruit than expected, but I'm not crazy enough about the rest of the tracks to really try to cram it into the 'enjoying' part of my brain. Track A isn't the best start, perhaps somewhat slower than I imagined it'd be going in. Sometimes I thought the amount of instruments playing at once was a bit overwhelming. It seems to contrast the idea of it being meant for a solo dancer, intentional or not. I feel pretty similar about Track B. I became a bit more interested when things started to pick up into somewhat of a swing rhythm but it never really went anywhere satisfying for me unfortunately. Track C was thankfully a bit of a turning point. I can't quite put my finger on why but it feels a lot more cohesive and interesting to me. The Spanish(?) guitar in the middle was a fun touch. Later on in the song it seemed to fall into the same ways that made me not really vibe well with the first two songs but I definitely enjoyed it more on the whole. [First Listen] Mode D / E / F feels like more of the same. I noticed a part of Track C which I liked reappear here so maybe it's clearly supposed to act as a culmination but I couldn't really tell you if anything else is being referenced again here. Just feeling a bit worn out halfway through. It's a shame because there are parts I do like, in this track and throughout the record but it's all hidden throughout parts I find confusing and not that enjoyable. [Second Listen] I decided to listen to Mode D / E / F again since my friend had a completely different view on the album to me. I think my feelings on the other tracks will remain the same but I can at least say I like this track in particular a little bit more now that I've had a break from listening. It kinda sucks that it's at the end, I don't think that does it any favours. FAVOURITES - Track C; Mode D / E / F LEAST FAVOURITES - Track A

I'm still not into jazz.

Na ja. Ich bin eigentlich Jazzfan. Aber das ist mir frei und wild.

Not for me.

Maybe after years of Jazz this will make sense. Right now I do not get it. Mingus moves is much better.

It seems to be an album that you either love to pieces, or get a bad headache from, and I'm among the last category.

Very disjointed. Very passionate

i try with jazz like this, i honestly do but i guess i just find it background music in the end. that is on me

Boring jazz

Great musical talent, just not my cup of tea

Hardcore jazz is powerful music, but not for me. 2/5

is this what a nervous breakdown sounds like?

Maybe I just don't understand jazz and maybe that makes me uncool but I did not enjoy or get this. So noisy and lacking a cohesive path. 3/10 (1.5/5)

Favoriten Medley Mode d Trio and group dancers

Inte så svängig men istället lite gapig jazz. Tvåa

I just don't get jazz.

Laaaangweilig

First bit was physically painful. Ok I didn't hate this at all but just not something I would listen to on a walk.

Not my thingus

Complete

I wish I could use the word "minging" again, I learned it not long ago and really like it. But alas, this album is fine. Like a movie score or something. Not my taste for sure

Man this is not my preferred kind of jazz. I’m sure there’s a lot going on here that’s difficult and complex and interesting but to my ears, this sounds like a lot of noise. When I listen to this I feel like the Grinch hating the Whos of Whoville for just making noise noise noise noise. Not for me Audio visual aid: https://youtu.be/UsMlsDgMXJM?si=nlOhFs1cDrpkn69z

Chaotic and not always easy to listen to. Probably the point, but needs a very specialized and committed audience for appreciation I'd say.

Just not for me

a 18 minute song is no joke… 2,5/5

Interesting Fusions and chaotic elements. But not really my cup of jazz. Still liked the listening experience. Bit less a project i will return to. (2.5/5.0)

The first 4 songs were mediocre.

Good music for a trip to mars. Haha I don't even know how to think about this alongside the other albums we've ranked. Jazz is so wild. Music Experience has certainly helped me appreciate Jazz more but I think in some cases it is still not for me. This is all fine but all way too aggressive and cloying to want to listen to in my daily life. I could only ever see it working to create tension in an indie film, otherwise I have no use for it. Seems insane to do a track ranking. Maybe it would grow on me over time, but today it feels like a 2 (and I did listen to the whole thing, yes)

I thought this would be good writing music, being jazz and all, but it was way too chaotic. The whole making the trumpet talk thing towards the end of Track B was particularly jarring. Perhaps I didn't experience this one in the right state of mind, but I found it grating.

Particularly liked track C, very adventurous. All in all, not my cup of tea since I'm not that into jazz

Not my favourite jazz on this list by a long shot, this just came and went without any lasting impression. Not much of a review I know, but there's nowt much else I can say on the matter.

Just doesn't do it for me...

Musicianship is excellent and production is excellent. I get why this is on the list because the vibe is very niche and very good in this niche but I will likely never listen again because virtuoso instrumentals for the sake of it gets boring fast. My wife likes it- from the one song she heard.

It's alright.

I am not a Jazz fan and this album didn't change that any. 2 stars or D.

It was ok. Sometimes a bit too noisy. Not my favourite kind of jazz, but might be nice sometimes.

God I just wish I enjoyed listening to Jazz. It's probably a very excellent example of a style of Jazz that I simply don't derive any pleasure from listening to.

I don’t get it, and that’s okay.

Tracks B and C were pretty good. A and D felt busy, all the instruments didn’t flow at times. It was an ok jazz album but no my favorite.

Ich mag Jazz, aber das war mir viel zu stressig.

Thank fuck that's over.

I like some jazz, but I did not care for most of this album. It sounds too unstructured, I guess avant-garde. I do appreciate that what is here is intentional and a lot of work went into making it sound that way. You would probably need to be a bigger jazz fan than me to fully appreciate it.

Damn I need a hit of whatever he is smoking. That may of helped me get through this.

Track A..oh, so this is that messy crunchy jazz… it’s giving.. anxiety. Track B- started off sexy, turned into a train wreck. Track C- getting nicer, made me think of Fun happy magical forests… and we got towards the end and it sounds like that forest is on fire and all of the fun creatures are dying…. Oh… I just started looking at the full song titles… the sound makes sense for what is happening. Mode D- more of the same… nit really for me but I appreciate it.

didnt enjoy this.

Individually it works but struggled as an album

OK, so this one is a little "out there." I like Mingus but based on my criteria of will I listen to this again, I have to say, no. I hate to do that for my first jazz review.

The saving grace was the sweet sexphone

This wasn't as bad as expected. Behind the tender dissonances some melodies were to be detected. Surely innovative at the time of making. However, nothing I'm going to return to.

Improv jazz is regrettably not my thing, so while each track starts off nice, it dissolves into jazzy mess not long after. To each their own.

boring but I get the greatness

Álbum de jazz. Não é mt a minha praia, mas os caras parecem ser super virtuosos.

I think I’m reaching my limit for my tolerance of jazz. It feels like every time I get a jazz album, it goes into one ear and out the other. Granted, I think that the problem is that all of the jazz I got has come from the 50’s and 60’s. But outside of Miles Davis and Bill Evans, none of them have been anything of note. This one, however, pushed me off the edge. Half of this just felt either the worst New Year’s party you ever attended or a recital of people slamming on their instruments. Can I get an album with actual fucking music and not 40 minutes of random jazz music that goes for 6 minutes a pop (or in the final track, nearly 20?!) I swear to god every time the generator gives me a jazz album, it feels like a nothing album. I get nothing from them, and this might be the worst I got. Had it not been for some select moments, this might have become a part of my 1-rated albums. Favorite track: Track C- Group Dancers (it was the most coherent) Other hits: nothing

I don't think I understand the genre.

I liked the last track with the Spanish guitar not really a good album for easy listening. Great for dancing in the 50s

I can appreciate it's very technically skilled but it wasn't particularly enjoyable for me to listen to - too many notes :P

When someone says "experimental jazz", this is the sound I imagine. I had a headache while listening to this and the music did not improve it.

Just not my thing. Nice but wouldn't listen to

I’m not the biggest Jazz fan. This was a challenging listen in parts but there was some good in here too.

I guess I'm not a big Jazz guy cause this did nothing for me. I'd put it on for some background music but that's about it.

Not for me

When do they stop tuning the instruments and play the music? I'm kidding, sort of - but this was all over the place, scattered, discordant. I generally really love jazz as a genre, but this was too experimental and chaotic for me.

Trumpet jazz. Alright, not particularly fond of so much trumpet but it was played well

This was not for me. I like jazz but this felt like every song started out smooth and nice but built into a sonic cacophony of too many instruments trying to play over each other in a clash to be the loudest. Maybe I'm missing something but listening to this with a coworker they said it sounded like everyone warming up on their instruments. For me I liken it to the sonic embodiment of a migraine.

Meh. Not my thing

I don't hate Jazz, I just don't really like it...

Jazz is cool. This is a bit cacophonous.

Better than the miles Davis album.

I didn't hate it, but I barely made it through the album.

Call me a dolt if you must, but I just don't really get it.

I just can't get into the jazz jams on this one. 2/5

Wanted to get into it more but wasn't one of the jazz albums that grabbed me. May relisten after a decent break and see if I can latch on to anything here.

2.5 relative to classic albums I expect on the 1001 albums list.

Avant-garde jazz. Experimental y caótico. No me ha gustado. Un 2.

Creo que iba tocando una nota sin tener en cuenta la nota anterior.

Not for me

It’s jazz. And if you’ve listened to one jazz album, you’ve listened to them all. Okay, maybe not, but you have listened to a majority of them. And this falls into that majority.

I'm afraid I can't tell if this is good or not; I am largely resigned to the fact that I don't have a good ear for jazz. I was fine with this on the first track, but couldn't wait for it to be over by the end.

There's something here to love but I can't quite find it. It's a bunch of people blowing on horns. What can I say, I don't love jazz.

Just not for me. I need more structure in my music.

Boring old big band jazz. Muffled trumpet

Track C was the best. But I can’t appreciate jazz

Not my jam.

I really really don't like jazz

No. 295/1001 Tack A - Solo Dancer 2/5 Track B - Duete Solo Dancers 2/5 Track C - Group Dancers 2/5 Medley: Mode D-Trio and Group Dancers 2/5 Average: 2,0 Just not something I ever see myself listening to.

so anxiety provoking. hard to deny the talent but a tough listen.

I’ve enjoyed some Mingus albums in the past, but this just seemed like a lot of noise.

#388. More annoying jazz. 2/5: jazz

This is the jazz equivalent of that awful Adam Sandler film where everyone talks over each other constantly and the whole thing is stressful. It sounds like a random cacophony created by people who are presumably actually really good at their instruments. Why not just write something coherent? I dunno. There’s something somewhat cool about it but I just didn’t enjoy listening to it and I doubt I will again.

Hmm, I have few Mingus albums and love them, but this one was a challenge to listen to.

This was a challenge for sure. I kept absolutely despising it and then all of a sudden it would be absolutely beautiful and then it would leak back into being a shocking moment of noodling. It's like they're taken the post war music that I love and over jazzed the hell out of it

Jazz, 1963 -> 2

man, i really WANT to like some of this more esoteric jazz on this list but i just can't crack this nut. and i have a music degree for pete's sake. parts of this sounded good and swingy, particularly the middle of track B, but for each exciting and captivating section of these songs, there was an equal and opposite section of unintelligible cacophony... mingus' third law. favorites: track b - duete solo dancers

Once again jazz does nothing for me.

Cet album a réussi à me faire haïr les trompettes, c'est peu dire

A painful listen

Not my style and kinda feel Eh! About it

Weird but not offensive

This one was okay... Not much more to say really - it's repetitive instrumental Jazz.

Another fairly tough listen. I like a bit of jazz but prefer a few lyrics thrown in, big band style like Harry Connick etc. This was fine but there wasn’t enough there to have me listen again, because it all sounded quite samey.

Very chaotic and sounds like bad guy in movie is coming. Jungle vibes

Sadly couldnt get into this

that's certainly jazz...

Not for me

I was on the verge of hallucinations while listening to this

Still dont get jazz, but this one is dark and unhinged enough to earn an extra star.

Cant stand jazz most of the time, but this felt like a soundtrack to a 50s noir thriller... wasn't that bad.

I understand this is meant to evoke emotion - but the sad thing is I can only listen to these records while I work, and I just don't want to feel even more anxious while I work. Wish I could have listened during a time when I have the capacity to appreciate, but I don't - 2/5 Reviewed 20/08/2024

Ok, so this isn't my thing, but every time I was on the verge of stopping the album, something grabbed my attention and made me stay with it. Perhaps there's something there that further plays will draw out of me ... or perhaps not

Did this inspire every sexy detective drama soundtrack of all time? Is there such a thing as too much jazz? This asks more questions than it answers. 1.8

Like Coltrane, Mingus was an absolute genius who went from playing beautiful and engaging music early to pushing the frontiers of jazz so far as to create music that is almost unlistenable to most of us mortals. Ah-Um, from 5 years earlier, is my favorite point on that progression. This album has hints of greatness but veers off the road too damn much to be enjoyable.

Eh. Time has outrun this album

Jazzigt!

All the things I hate about jazz in one album.

Even if I love jazz, I was left wondering when this album would get good, as no songs were grabbing me, only to see 4 tracks overall. Not sure why this is part of the album list

Good in places but a bit esoteric for me.

I listen to jazz, but this was not something I really liked, maybe I like more tuneful stuff... didn't do it for me

I'm not a huge fan of purely acoustic albums, and this one doesn't seem to be any different. It feels slightly repetitive at times.

whole lotta nothing

For jazz this isn’t bad - they actually sound like they’re playing the same song which is worth an extra star.

I'm sure if I played an instrument i would appreciate this noise. But I don't. And I didn't like it.

Not for me

I've already had this??? Confused. It's in my history...

Черный святой против грешницы. Ну тут по идее изи вин для грешницы. Но послушаем, посмотрим как оно повернётся Нет, ну фанки груви, но особо мне не вкатило

I'm sure this music takes soo much skill to create, and maybe accompanied by dance or as part of a live performance I'd give it its proper appreciation. Unfortunately just listening to it didn't give me any enjoyment.

Jazz do be jazzin

I've actually seen and heard this album before. I was in a roomful of guys proclaiming their advanced musical taste while it was on. What a discombobulated mess. It's not for me. I'm not refined enough. (rolleyes)

Jazz hurts my head

Very 60s jazz. Felt like I was hearing the soundtrack to a mid-budget spy movie. 2/5

Even for Jazz, I didn't like it too much. And I like Jazz! Closer to a 3

1. zolo dancer - 1.5 2. track b - 1.5 3. track c - 1.5 4. mode d - 2

Creo que iba tocando una nota sin tener en cuenta la nota anterior.

Mingus is great, but this album doesn't hit me right. As much as I wanted to like this, I didn’t.

I listened but not enough but enough where I know I’m just not a jazz guy. I’m sure it’s decent for a jazz album.

just was not feeling this. sorry charles

Didnt really enjoy it. Maybe not in the right mood.

Full of dissonance. Difficult to comprehend.

Unfortunately just not my thing, although I will say (unlike other music from this genre) I did genuinely notice that the songs were different. So yeah I guess it was one of the better instrumental albums, but still just not for me.

As a jazz musician myself, it feels a little traitorous to give this such a low rating. But really, Mingus could have done so much more to make this more accessible to a wider audience. The organised chaos of avant-garde jazz is just a little much even for me to handle, and it brings a consistently crazed, dizzying mood to the table that makes it harder to engage with that it should be. Still, the music is dark, energetic, and filled with humour and little winks to jazz contemporaries and predecessors. There's definitely some Davis and Ellington influence with the rapid, wavery trumpet and sax lines. Interesting mutes on those wind instruments during some parts, though it could just as easily be the musicians trying to play as weirdly as possible. The wah-wah, almost kazoo-like sax timbre in Duete Solo Dancers was the clearest example of this. I also liked the wild, interweaving melodic lines on, like, 7 different instruments at once. This happened very often in the track Group Dancers. Cool mood transitions in this track, too. And, obviously, fantastic, dynamic bass playing. I'm not a fan of extended jazz tracks on albums. They're much more forgivable when recorded live, but of course this is a studio album. The 19-minute album closer is, by its own admission, a medley – and in fact the song includes several near-silent intermissions. Break them apart, Charles! 2/5 Key tracks: Duete Solo Dancers (track 2/4), Group Dancers (track 3/4)

A bit of cacophony, a little too much happening for me

Don't have much to say. Some alright music but not very remarkable. 2/5

Some cool moments but I found it much too anxiety inducing.

Krasse Musiker, aber das ist die Art von Jazz, die mir zu verspielt ist.

I found myself not really liking jazzy albums that much any more, whereas this was grand. Could have done without that last medley, though.

Hmmm— some really interesting moments here but nothing really stuck with me. I understand and appreciate its importance, but can’t seem to find a reason to listen to this one again.

Jazz is not my listening pleasure but I can appreciate the originality of the album.

I'm no jazz expert so if there's going to be a wrong opinion here then this is it. This sounds like the backing music to a 1940s cartoon where half of the characters are smoking oversized cigars for no apparent reason.

Not for me. Too experimental. Too hectic. Too much jazz 😉

I enjoyed this better than that John Zorn album but that's really not saying much. This type of jazz is not for me.

When it’s just a solo instrument it’s ok, then when they all play together it’s utterly horrific!!

I haven't given jazz much of a chance before. I still can't say it's for me, but felt like I could start to get why it's enjoyed.

Im so 🤷‍♀️ about this. its fine. lost me at points. not something i would relisten to.

Not giving it a one bc the last track kind of reminded me of Matilda the musical at parts which gickelt my ummy bone.

This just didnt work for me

Jazz just rubs me the wrong way. I don't know why, I have never been able to formulate a rational reason it just does. This was no exception.

Clearly talented. I'd give it 2.5 if I could.

Jazz! Parece música de filme de sábado a noite.

I desperately long for the day when Jazz "lovers" pull the 20 inch dildo of pretention out of their asses and admit that their beloved genre is actually just steaming shit most of the time. There's about a good minute and a half per song, then 5+ minutes of crap. How this has a 3.3 is beyond me, it didn't offend me quite enough to drop it to a 1, but it was just straight up not good.

Ich bin sicher CM ist ein ganz Großer im Jazz - für mich aber zu Free Jazzig. Konnte ich leider nicht zu Ende hören.

Not my steeze. 2/5

Trube, jazz, OK, ali nije za bilo kad

Mingus

I'm not saying it's bad by any means, I can appreciate the jazz. This album feels more like a fever dream than an album I would choose to listen to more than once

Sorry, this is just not my cup of tea. It makes me very nervous.

These cats were definitely cooking but god damn did they burn the food. Last two songs of the album were better than the first, though. Rough start, okay finish.

I'm not cultured enough to rate this high

4 songs, 39 min 25 sec.

This isn't a single composition. It's certainly jazzy. Music that begs for you to be doing something else instead of paying attention to jazz. Although I suppose that some people will enjoy it. I appreciate that he's got more musical ability in his left pinky than I have in my entire body, it's just not my style. It's like how some people like coffee and appreciate it while others don't.

Definitely a challenging listen. There are parts where it is focused on a few instruments, or a fragile balance across instruments, but each of these four tracks finds their moments to choose a cacophonous frenzied drunken animals on instruments approach. It seems to devolve to a play whatever you want as long as it is loud and fast. This did not help me on my journey to better understand jazz.

Sounds exactly like the music you'd expect from someone named Mingus. Make of that what you want.

I find full instrumental albums pretty hit and miss. This was mid imo

I did not enjoy this as much as Miles Davis stuff.

First listen-through was highkey one of the worst musical experiences of my life. It felt like one of those sections of a rock song where everyone just plays whatever they want to make it sound chaotic on purpose, but for 39 minutes straight and with more trombone. The second listen-through made me rethink my entire life experience because it wasn’t even close to as bad. How could I hear it so fundamentally differently after just one day? I do think that there’s still something I’m missing about this album though, because I was still very glad it was over after the second time through.

Not sure what good jazz sounds like, I guess this is good.

3/10 Chaos, but not completely. My ears don't work right for this 2-27-2024

Not my kind of music but I admire how the artist can make you feel like you are being pulled in opposite directions. It’s disorienting to listen to. But kinda cool

Stökjazz. Rätt jobbigt.

Wanted to like it more than I did. Too eclectic and seemingly random for me.

Feels like noise for most of it. Nice noise I guess

Didn't care for this style of jazz

Not for me 2/5

Clearly these are some talented musicians, but I just can't into the music they actually play.

Only listened to a bit, will listen to today.

How many vintage B&W movies do I have to watch to get this? I am an unsophisticated lout and jazz in general bores the 'eff out of me. I did listen to this and I recognize the musicianship - I played a horn myself as a youth - but, I just don't enjoy it. Maybe it's all about instrumentation for me - I enjoyed the Spanish guitar on track 4 very much.

Known for being a volatile dude with an angry temper who believed in collective improvisation, Mingus gives us a good example of art imitating life on this one I suppose. Maybe I would’ve enjoyed this more while watching the ballet for which it was written. Too erratic for my taste.

I usually listen to Jazz to get some chill vibes and relax. This was a little too chaotic for me.

I don't understand jazz. I can enjoy jazz but fail to get the emotion behind it, as I am more of a "words give emotion" person. This is all just fucking noise to me. Maybe it makes me stupid and unrefined, but there are other jazz albums I would put on instead of this. The chances of me listening to this again are nil. This album may belong in the book as an example of jazz that isn't as good as the other jazz in the book.

No, don't care for this.

Couldn’t finish it. Too many complaints from the rest of the house

It was very jazz.

Really weird, going in too many directions for my taste, lacking basic rythm and groove

Still hate jazz

Not a huge jazz person. There were parts that weren’t bad but others, I don’t know. It reminded me of a recurring stress dream. IYKYK.

I want so badly to enjoy jazz, but this album didn’t help in that regard. While I appreciate the talent and musicianship, the music itself sounds to me like a cacophony of competing instruments all vying for attention, with little melody to be found.

I will never understand this kind of Jazz. I just can't see (or hear, for that matter) the appeal. Case in point: this album. 2/5

I swear this inspired the fast shows’ ‘Jazz Club’.

I like jazz but this stressed me out

I'm still on edge

It was probably better if you like jazz.

I love bass, but that's really experimental!

Jazz album, but a bit more disorganised than other ones. It was allright but I don't really like jazz that much. 2**

Wasn’t for me

Very babbity. Ends up being tuneless babbity.

I was super into two and a half of these four songs. Which says a lot as someone who doesn't like jazz.

This was all instrumental. Different that what I would typically listen to. Not bad for background music. I would not listen to this again.

I really did not enjoy it on first listen. Lucas pointed out that it flows nicely between chaos and not chaos which I agree is cool. However IMHO there was too much chaos. Charles Mingus has so much cool music, so I’m kinda disappointed this was the sample we got. 4/10

I just dont like jazz very much 4/10

It's getting a higher review than wu tan but only just. Turns out jazz is also not for me. Giving it 2 because I didn't have to actively skip past it. It all sounds very samey. I feel bad because it's legendary and all that but not my cup of tea.

Not really my type of music.

Some jazz i can handle. This was not my favorite. I am always confused by Jazz music cause how do they ever decide what to record cause they never play it through the same. It's kinda cool in some ways, but in others... not so much. Track C sounded like everyone was soloing at once at one point and it sounded awful. Probably won't listen to again.

Not my thing

Jazz music is not really my cup of tea for listening pleasure but for those who enjoy it seemed on point with nice instrumentals.

Avant-garde jazz. Experimental y caótico. No me ha gustado. Un 2.

No doubt there is musicality here but its a style of music that I can't appreciate

It’s jangly jazz, I’m still uneducated to not really get it.

Prolly ground breaking but the muted trombone in the last track was a sensory nightmare

This was an alright jazz album. I feel like it had a lot of sounds that have become common but it was probably groundbreaking at the time.

I was ok with most of the album but it lost me in the last track when it felt like all the musicians were doing their own thing and clashing with each other. It was kind of refreshing to hear music that doesn’t stick to a steady beat/tempo but flows from one groove to another. I also liked that instead of one soloist there were multiple instruments that took turns being prominent.

I'm sure it's good, but jazz like this always feels like one of those Magic Eye pictures where I'm either missing something or the rest of the world is pulling a fast one on me.

Can't get into this jazz at all

There are some notes here that I enjoy, but then general cacophany and lack of theme or meaning really strip this album of any relevance to me. It feels less planned out than just being a vehicle for improvisations. Entirely uninteresting to me.

jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Thought I liked Mingus, but this is a little chaotic/random for me. Feels like some kind of big band free jazz and I've always struggled to get into most free jazz. But it has some nice "noir" moments, evoking alcoholic detectives trudging down rainy alleyways. Must explore Mingus more - it's possible I'd only heard his early stuff.

Not a bad jazz album but nothing stood out too me either.

fantastic piano. a little repetitive. the tracks seem to blend together. not something I'd go back to but i appreciate the talent to make it.

Thought I would enjoy this. I did not.

Pretty cool. 2.5

Not a fan of freeform jazz and this album didn't change that. The piano work was pretty stellar though. Best Songs: N/A Listen Again: No

No more jazz please

Not my style, but some clear talent in the music.

Bit chaotic for me

Jazzy Jazzy - teils etwas Jeder-gegen-Jeden-Combo Style

#1 - Okay, this doesn't sound like experimental or avant-garde jazz. It sounds like normal jazz. Not terrible, not great. Kind of noisy and busy than having a good consistent sound. #2 - Slower paced than #1 and a lot more sad in the beginning. It picks up and gets back to the hectic and frantic sound as it goes on. It has more structure than a jam session, but not by much. #3 - If I had to give a favorite, it would be this one. It actually sounds like a good musical piece. Slow with a Spanish guitar touch. Surprisingly impressed.. at first. Then it launches into the jazz you'd expect. Without the heavy trumpet bits, I'd give it a nod of approval. #4 - Apparently this one has three different movements in it. Neat. Though, listening to this and as it tries to blend classical music, I wish I was actually listening to classical music. I'm surprised this came out in the 60s. This seems more like a set of pieces from the earlier 1900s. Eh. It's at least done nicely. I don't know why this was included. I enjoyed the more classical elements and the Spanish guitar that was used throughout and compared to the jazz, I would rather listen to those types of albums. It's fine, but there I'm sure there are other albums in the book that are more deserving. I guess if you like jazz this will be good? I'm not sure what's really special about this. I'm glad it was short. 2/5.

Some nice parts, but the chaotic parts are too long.

I'm just not a big jazz guy... It's not you, it's me.

I mean. It's jazz. Technically accomplished jazz. But not my thing. These reviews are for me, not for others. And aren't even really reviews. Oh well

Liked the jazzy bits, hated the flamenco nonsense that seemed to go on forever

Ehhh. For a jazz drummer, i struggle to enjoy listening to this.

You like jazz?
