Not for me

I've already had this??? Confused. It's in my history...

Черный святой против грешницы. Ну тут по идее изи вин для грешницы. Но послушаем, посмотрим как оно повернётся Нет, ну фанки груви, но особо мне не вкатило

I'm sure this music takes soo much skill to create, and maybe accompanied by dance or as part of a live performance I'd give it its proper appreciation. Unfortunately just listening to it didn't give me any enjoyment.

Jazz do be jazzin

I've actually seen and heard this album before. I was in a roomful of guys proclaiming their advanced musical taste while it was on. What a discombobulated mess. It's not for me. I'm not refined enough. (rolleyes)

Jazz hurts my head

Very 60s jazz. Felt like I was hearing the soundtrack to a mid-budget spy movie. 2/5

Even for Jazz, I didn't like it too much. And I like Jazz! Closer to a 3

1. zolo dancer - 1.5 2. track b - 1.5 3. track c - 1.5 4. mode d - 2

Creo que iba tocando una nota sin tener en cuenta la nota anterior.

Mingus is great, but this album doesn't hit me right. As much as I wanted to like this, I didn’t.

I listened but not enough but enough where I know I’m just not a jazz guy. I’m sure it’s decent for a jazz album.

just was not feeling this. sorry charles

Didnt really enjoy it. Maybe not in the right mood.

Full of dissonance. Difficult to comprehend.

Unfortunately just not my thing, although I will say (unlike other music from this genre) I did genuinely notice that the songs were different. So yeah I guess it was one of the better instrumental albums, but still just not for me.

As a jazz musician myself, it feels a little traitorous to give this such a low rating. But really, Mingus could have done so much more to make this more accessible to a wider audience. The organised chaos of avant-garde jazz is just a little much even for me to handle, and it brings a consistently crazed, dizzying mood to the table that makes it harder to engage with that it should be. Still, the music is dark, energetic, and filled with humour and little winks to jazz contemporaries and predecessors. There's definitely some Davis and Ellington influence with the rapid, wavery trumpet and sax lines. Interesting mutes on those wind instruments during some parts, though it could just as easily be the musicians trying to play as weirdly as possible. The wah-wah, almost kazoo-like sax timbre in Duete Solo Dancers was the clearest example of this. I also liked the wild, interweaving melodic lines on, like, 7 different instruments at once. This happened very often in the track Group Dancers. Cool mood transitions in this track, too. And, obviously, fantastic, dynamic bass playing. I'm not a fan of extended jazz tracks on albums. They're much more forgivable when recorded live, but of course this is a studio album. The 19-minute album closer is, by its own admission, a medley – and in fact the song includes several near-silent intermissions. Break them apart, Charles! 2/5 Key tracks: Duete Solo Dancers (track 2/4), Group Dancers (track 3/4)

A bit of cacophony, a little too much happening for me

Don't have much to say. Some alright music but not very remarkable. 2/5

Some cool moments but I found it much too anxiety inducing.

Krasse Musiker, aber das ist die Art von Jazz, die mir zu verspielt ist.

I found myself not really liking jazzy albums that much any more, whereas this was grand. Could have done without that last medley, though.

Hmmm— some really interesting moments here but nothing really stuck with me. I understand and appreciate its importance, but can’t seem to find a reason to listen to this one again.

Jazz is not my listening pleasure but I can appreciate the originality of the album.

I'm no jazz expert so if there's going to be a wrong opinion here then this is it. This sounds like the backing music to a 1940s cartoon where half of the characters are smoking oversized cigars for no apparent reason.

Not for me. Too experimental. Too hectic. Too much jazz 😉

I enjoyed this better than that John Zorn album but that's really not saying much. This type of jazz is not for me.

When it’s just a solo instrument it’s ok, then when they all play together it’s utterly horrific!!

I haven't given jazz much of a chance before. I still can't say it's for me, but felt like I could start to get why it's enjoyed.

Im so 🤷‍♀️ about this. its fine. lost me at points. not something i would relisten to.

Not giving it a one bc the last track kind of reminded me of Matilda the musical at parts which gickelt my ummy bone.

This just didnt work for me

Jazz just rubs me the wrong way. I don't know why, I have never been able to formulate a rational reason it just does. This was no exception.

Clearly talented. I'd give it 2.5 if I could.

Jazz! Parece música de filme de sábado a noite.

I desperately long for the day when Jazz "lovers" pull the 20 inch dildo of pretention out of their asses and admit that their beloved genre is actually just steaming shit most of the time. There's about a good minute and a half per song, then 5+ minutes of crap. How this has a 3.3 is beyond me, it didn't offend me quite enough to drop it to a 1, but it was just straight up not good.

Ich bin sicher CM ist ein ganz Großer im Jazz - für mich aber zu Free Jazzig. Konnte ich leider nicht zu Ende hören.

Not my steeze. 2/5

Trube, jazz, OK, ali nije za bilo kad

Mingus

I'm not saying it's bad by any means, I can appreciate the jazz. This album feels more like a fever dream than an album I would choose to listen to more than once

Sorry, this is just not my cup of tea. It makes me very nervous.

These cats were definitely cooking but god damn did they burn the food. Last two songs of the album were better than the first, though. Rough start, okay finish.

I'm not cultured enough to rate this high

4 songs, 39 min 25 sec.

This isn't a single composition. It's certainly jazzy. Music that begs for you to be doing something else instead of paying attention to jazz. Although I suppose that some people will enjoy it. I appreciate that he's got more musical ability in his left pinky than I have in my entire body, it's just not my style. It's like how some people like coffee and appreciate it while others don't.

Definitely a challenging listen. There are parts where it is focused on a few instruments, or a fragile balance across instruments, but each of these four tracks finds their moments to choose a cacophonous frenzied drunken animals on instruments approach. It seems to devolve to a play whatever you want as long as it is loud and fast. This did not help me on my journey to better understand jazz.

Sounds exactly like the music you'd expect from someone named Mingus. Make of that what you want.

I find full instrumental albums pretty hit and miss. This was mid imo

I did not enjoy this as much as Miles Davis stuff.

First listen-through was highkey one of the worst musical experiences of my life. It felt like one of those sections of a rock song where everyone just plays whatever they want to make it sound chaotic on purpose, but for 39 minutes straight and with more trombone. The second listen-through made me rethink my entire life experience because it wasn’t even close to as bad. How could I hear it so fundamentally differently after just one day? I do think that there’s still something I’m missing about this album though, because I was still very glad it was over after the second time through.

Not sure what good jazz sounds like, I guess this is good.

3/10 Chaos, but not completely. My ears don't work right for this 2-27-2024

Not my kind of music but I admire how the artist can make you feel like you are being pulled in opposite directions. It’s disorienting to listen to. But kinda cool

Stökjazz. Rätt jobbigt.

Wanted to like it more than I did. Too eclectic and seemingly random for me.

Feels like noise for most of it. Nice noise I guess

Didn't care for this style of jazz

Not for me 2/5

Clearly these are some talented musicians, but I just can't into the music they actually play.

Only listened to a bit, will listen to today.

How many vintage B&W movies do I have to watch to get this? I am an unsophisticated lout and jazz in general bores the 'eff out of me. I did listen to this and I recognize the musicianship - I played a horn myself as a youth - but, I just don't enjoy it. Maybe it's all about instrumentation for me - I enjoyed the Spanish guitar on track 4 very much.

Known for being a volatile dude with an angry temper who believed in collective improvisation, Mingus gives us a good example of art imitating life on this one I suppose. Maybe I would’ve enjoyed this more while watching the ballet for which it was written. Too erratic for my taste.

I usually listen to Jazz to get some chill vibes and relax. This was a little too chaotic for me.

I don't understand jazz. I can enjoy jazz but fail to get the emotion behind it, as I am more of a "words give emotion" person. This is all just fucking noise to me. Maybe it makes me stupid and unrefined, but there are other jazz albums I would put on instead of this. The chances of me listening to this again are nil. This album may belong in the book as an example of jazz that isn't as good as the other jazz in the book.

No, don't care for this.

Couldn’t finish it. Too many complaints from the rest of the house

It was very jazz.

Really weird, going in too many directions for my taste, lacking basic rythm and groove

Still hate jazz

Not a huge jazz person. There were parts that weren’t bad but others, I don’t know. It reminded me of a recurring stress dream. IYKYK.

I want so badly to enjoy jazz, but this album didn’t help in that regard. While I appreciate the talent and musicianship, the music itself sounds to me like a cacophony of competing instruments all vying for attention, with little melody to be found.

I will never understand this kind of Jazz. I just can't see (or hear, for that matter) the appeal. Case in point: this album. 2/5

I swear this inspired the fast shows’ ‘Jazz Club’.

I like jazz but this stressed me out

I'm still on edge

It was probably better if you like jazz.

I love bass, but that's really experimental!

Jazz album, but a bit more disorganised than other ones. It was allright but I don't really like jazz that much. 2**

Wasn’t for me

Very babbity. Ends up being tuneless babbity.

I was super into two and a half of these four songs. Which says a lot as someone who doesn't like jazz.

This was all instrumental. Different that what I would typically listen to. Not bad for background music. I would not listen to this again.

I really did not enjoy it on first listen. Lucas pointed out that it flows nicely between chaos and not chaos which I agree is cool. However IMHO there was too much chaos. Charles Mingus has so much cool music, so I’m kinda disappointed this was the sample we got. 4/10

I just dont like jazz very much 4/10

It's getting a higher review than wu tan but only just. Turns out jazz is also not for me. Giving it 2 because I didn't have to actively skip past it. It all sounds very samey. I feel bad because it's legendary and all that but not my cup of tea.

Not really my type of music.

Some jazz i can handle. This was not my favorite. I am always confused by Jazz music cause how do they ever decide what to record cause they never play it through the same. It's kinda cool in some ways, but in others... not so much. Track C sounded like everyone was soloing at once at one point and it sounded awful. Probably won't listen to again.

Not my thing

Jazz music is not really my cup of tea for listening pleasure but for those who enjoy it seemed on point with nice instrumentals.

Avant-garde jazz. Experimental y caótico. No me ha gustado. Un 2.

No doubt there is musicality here but its a style of music that I can't appreciate

It’s jangly jazz, I’m still uneducated to not really get it.

Prolly ground breaking but the muted trombone in the last track was a sensory nightmare

This was an alright jazz album. I feel like it had a lot of sounds that have become common but it was probably groundbreaking at the time.

I was ok with most of the album but it lost me in the last track when it felt like all the musicians were doing their own thing and clashing with each other. It was kind of refreshing to hear music that doesn’t stick to a steady beat/tempo but flows from one groove to another. I also liked that instead of one soloist there were multiple instruments that took turns being prominent.

I'm sure it's good, but jazz like this always feels like one of those Magic Eye pictures where I'm either missing something or the rest of the world is pulling a fast one on me.

Can't get into this jazz at all

There are some notes here that I enjoy, but then general cacophany and lack of theme or meaning really strip this album of any relevance to me. It feels less planned out than just being a vehicle for improvisations. Entirely uninteresting to me.

jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Thought I liked Mingus, but this is a little chaotic/random for me. Feels like some kind of big band free jazz and I've always struggled to get into most free jazz. But it has some nice "noir" moments, evoking alcoholic detectives trudging down rainy alleyways. Must explore Mingus more - it's possible I'd only heard his early stuff.

Not a bad jazz album but nothing stood out too me either.

Hard to know how to rate this Accomplished obviously But a good listen - not always

fantastic piano. a little repetitive. the tracks seem to blend together. not something I'd go back to but i appreciate the talent to make it.

Thought I would enjoy this. I did not.

Pretty cool. 2.5

Not a fan of freeform jazz and this album didn't change that. The piano work was pretty stellar though. Best Songs: N/A Listen Again: No

No more jazz please

Not my style, but some clear talent in the music.

Bit chaotic for me

Jazzy Jazzy - teils etwas Jeder-gegen-Jeden-Combo Style

#1 - Okay, this doesn't sound like experimental or avant-garde jazz. It sounds like normal jazz. Not terrible, not great. Kind of noisy and busy than having a good consistent sound. #2 - Slower paced than #1 and a lot more sad in the beginning. It picks up and gets back to the hectic and frantic sound as it goes on. It has more structure than a jam session, but not by much. #3 - If I had to give a favorite, it would be this one. It actually sounds like a good musical piece. Slow with a Spanish guitar touch. Surprisingly impressed.. at first. Then it launches into the jazz you'd expect. Without the heavy trumpet bits, I'd give it a nod of approval. #4 - Apparently this one has three different movements in it. Neat. Though, listening to this and as it tries to blend classical music, I wish I was actually listening to classical music. I'm surprised this came out in the 60s. This seems more like a set of pieces from the earlier 1900s. Eh. It's at least done nicely. I don't know why this was included. I enjoyed the more classical elements and the Spanish guitar that was used throughout and compared to the jazz, I would rather listen to those types of albums. It's fine, but there I'm sure there are other albums in the book that are more deserving. I guess if you like jazz this will be good? I'm not sure what's really special about this. I'm glad it was short. 2/5.

Some nice parts, but the chaotic parts are too long.

I'm just not a big jazz guy... It's not you, it's me.

I mean. It's jazz. Technically accomplished jazz. But not my thing. These reviews are for me, not for others. And aren't even really reviews. Oh well

Liked the jazzy bits, hated the flamenco nonsense that seemed to go on forever

Ehhh. For a jazz drummer, i struggle to enjoy listening to this.

You like jazz?

The songs on this album had too many simultaneous and conflicting rhythms/noises. Seemed too experimental for my taste. 2/5

Compared to the other jazz album this is really tough to listen to as there doesn’t seem to be a dominant melody. I’m by no means a jazz expert but I found this album to be really harsh on the ears and a bit all over the place this really wasn’t my cup of tea but I do respect the musicianship.

2.5 Look, I’m sorry, I just don’t get jazz. And that bums me out a little bit because I really want to be someone who is capable of appreciating all genres of music, but despite this being the #14 highest rated album of all-time on rateyourmusic.com, nothing about it speaks to me any more than any other jazz album I’ve heard. I know that there’s something I’m missing, and I’m honestly a little envious of those who can pick up on it because personally, I feel like I just listened to a bunch of random instrumentation here. That’s not to say this album is objectionable by any means - I would rather listen to it over many other albums we’ve seen on this list so far - but I just don’t see a situation where I would opt to put this on for pure personal enjoyment. I know it takes a certain level of musicianship to be able to freestyle like this, but that just doesn’t automatically equate to personal enjoyment in my book. Anyway, I think I’ve made my point. All that to say though, I’m always looking to explore new music (hence why I started this project in the first place), so as long as jazz albums continue to exist, I’ll continue to give them a chance - still hoping for that one that finally makes it click for me.

It’s alright, I’ve heard better jazz, and I didn’t do research to know if this was an influential album or not.

Some solid jazz, enjoyed the smoother parts. But the wild/chaotic parts were a bit to much for me. Sounded all jumbled up. Listened a second time, I can appreciated the musicianship, but its so overly complex that nothing goes together. Like listening to 2 bands play at once. At this time, I just don't get this kind of jazz. Maybe time will change me

Kinda fun. I'm not particularly a fan of jazz for some reasons - seems chaotic, each song is generally the same, and there are no words. Other than the 1980's electric guitar and drums, I am not typically as impressed/interested in the music of songs but more the voice. So it was not bad for ability's sake like 1996 pop album a few days ago, just not something I am personally interested in. So my rating is not a hit against the artist or album, just the style as a whole. 2/5

Its a very experimental avant garde and off course jazz reccord, so i’m not an expert in jazz so i’m not sure to have fully catch the essence of it.

Experimental, iconoclastic jazz. Not the biggest fan of Mingus but this is certainly an interesting listen. Not sure I connected with the record, but I can still give points for the craft on display.

Sounded nice sat on a verandah in France but would've been tiresome otherwise.

It wasn't unpleasant to listen to but I just don't really get jazz.

Too freeform

Good jazz is still jazz to me. Appreciate this guy’s talent but won’t be listening again. Was in the queue for passport control listening to the last track and it was a never ending song in a never ending queue. So. Thanks Charles

Mingus was a powerful figure in Jazz, but this isn't my thing.

Ok so this isn’t for me. A lot of twiddly doo and twoddly daa. I can understand how some people think this is peak music, but jazz is a real struggle for me.

Smooth jazz. Hurt my ears

Too much screechy sax

haha Mingus. He's got a horn.

Not a jazz guy. This was fine. Mingyyyyy

An entire album of jazz just gets tedious

I like jazz, but this was only ok.

I know this is good but my brain isn't used to it. Made me quite stressed? Loved how the trumpet sounded like a voice throughout.

too boring zz

I like Jazz, but this sort of grates on me. 2 stars

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Track B- Duete Solo Dancers (2) 2 - Track C- Group Dancers (3) 3 - Track A- Solo Dancer (1)

After 6 5-star albums in a row I suppose I had to get some jazz. Not as bad as Ornette Coleman but it still has a lot of jarring sounds.

A mess, a musical mess of tooting and blowing. Just not my thing at all.

Not easy listening but interesting and enjoyable depending on your mood

Urgh jazz

I'd appreciate it more in the right setting, say maybe in a late night cocktail bar. Tuesday morning getting ready for work was not my right setting for a first listen.

Interesting, but a little too experimental for my tastes.

Heel schaars.

Too jazzy for me. There's too little structure and it feels too improvised for my liking.

Simply not my kind of music, so guess I shouldn't review this album. Two stars might be unfair...

There were tiny moment where I thought I heard something that resembled music as I understand it… it came close once or twice. But mostly this is just a wall of noises. An audio Jackson Pollock. Avoid.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: It’s not bad just not my thing Favourite song: didn’t have one

One day my music taste will be refined enough that I can fully appreciate this. Today's not that day.

Preferred prior I think

There's jazz and there's Jazz with a capital J. The first is all about a feeling. It's about groove and swagger, rhythm and that magic thing that happens when a group of talented musicians are in the pocket together. This isn't that type of jazz. This is capital J Jazz. It's discordant and uncomfortable on purpose. The minute they hit a grove, they immediately shy away from it like a horse hitting an electric fence. Mingus is an exceptional musician but it seems as though he was actively working to make this album unenjoyable to the average listener. Capital J Jazz is so often a form of gatekeeping. It feels like hazing. "If you can't take the pain... if you're not willing to be humiliated... if you don't want it enough to commit the crime... well, you don't belong in the cool kids crowd." I'm not willing to put up with this nonsense so I guess I'm not cool. I can live with that. And I'll be happy to never have to listen to this again.

Pretty serious jazz over here mumma mia

This is where jazz and I were not meant to be together. I hear it — the exceptional musicianship, the intricate and deliberate arrangement, the intentional dissonance and musical interplay. I imagine, as a player, what a rush it must be to contribute and commit to the music in the moment. In a live setting, this might even be thrilling. But I can't say I enjoyed listening to the album. I couldn't find a way in. I appreciated many moments, the flamenco guitar was a surprise guest, but on the whole, there were no threads for me to take hold of, I found the brass too brash and noisy, and the music too dense and disconnected overall. Rather than transported, I was becoming agitated. So, as they say in the breakup game, it's not you, it's me. I tried, but I couldn't relate.

Not a super huge jazz fan, but it was beautiful nonetheless.

Not my kind of jazz

I don't like jazz 5/10 boring

I think that guy from La La Land would love this.

I just don’t get jazz.

This isn't very good, I fear either subjectively* or objectively. Getting his psychiatrist to write an introductory essay muddies the critical waters sufficiently to distract from this basic understanding. It's a cacophony of undistllled discontent, but much more likely to disengage than to rope people into the cause. *You have listened to Pithecanthropus Erectus, right? So what the hell I'm I supposed to do with this?

I don't understand jazz.

It’s ambient music so it’s supposed to be boring and uninteresting….. but it isn’t, some catchy loops.

It’s fun, yeah. I think I’ll leave it at that. Interesting that it was composed as a ballet. Next?

You know that meme with the football coach removing his headphones while looking visibly repulsed? That was me towards the end of this record. Not to say it was bad but man did this take me on a journey! I would go from feeling like I took five espresso shots to feeling like I was the main character of a romantic film in two seconds. There are parts that sound GREAT, there are parts that sound messy and overwhelming. But what do I know? I'm a terrible judge of jazz

Not my kind of Jazz; fully understand that some might dig this though. For me it is too frantic

Faites que ça cesse

I tried. I really tried.

fomeque

Too much goinng on

Not for me

Worth listening to, but my undiscerning hear has a hard time appreciating was is/isn't great jazz. Do enjoy as background music though. 2.5/5

Sounds like a steamy film noir soundtrack or something. I don’t know shit about jazz but didn’t particularly enjoy this.

Ya like jazz?

I didn't hate this album, but I couldn't really get into it, either. I guess it was okay as background music, but there was nothing memorable about it. I don't understand the appeal of jazz.

Nothing has soured me on jazz quite as much as actually listening to jazz.

I'm just not a jazz man. so don't ask me.

Apparently this is an all time great jazz album, with elements of classical, African and Spanish music, and genius orchestration. Unfortunately, my jazz ear is not fine tuned enough to recognise any of this. It sounded ok-ish, but a bit of a cacophony in places. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Track A – Solo Dancer (Stop! Look! And Listen, Sinner Jim Whitney!) Date listened: 08/07/22

A bit too freestyle for my liking.

not my type

enjoyable jazz but sometimes it got a little weird sounding. i do appreciate the subtitles for each movement, because it definitely added to the overall experience. mingus had a vision!

I assume this is considered "avant garde jazz" due to the mixture of jazz and classical stylings. The songs themselves are even arranged in and structured like classical movements rather than modern music tracks. When listening to classical works, my ear always gravitates towards the piano, and I really enjoyed Mingus's piano playing on this album. The brief, added Latin flair that was dabbled here and there was a nice surprise that I also loved! I'm still not finding myself to be much of a jazz fan, though! I think my overall enjoyment was rooted in some of the more out-of-the-box moments and less around the jazz itself. Still, a worthy listen!

This one is definitely not for me. Cover art 4 out of five

Mingus schmingus Got quite noisy near the end. Kept thinking it would get better.

En formato de trompeta, y algún instrumento más, canciones instrumentales sin más. Nada de vocalización. Imagino que para muy entusiastas. Personalmente no me ha supuesto nada escucharlo

Jazz for jazzmusikere. Burde hørt det live på en bar, og ikke på jobb. Noen gode sekvenser, men litt støyete.

I’m sure it’s probably good, just not my cup of tea.

i dont understand the point of jazz besides setting an ambiance in a film or something, this one is alright i guess not too fancy last song is quite intense

Jazz op de vrijdagochtend. Apart album met track A t/m D met als laatste een lengte van 18+ minuten. Ow, wacht, ik moet naar de muziek luisteren. Niet zo mijn ding, maar niet slecht, denk ik. **

far too much jazz in this baby for me to handle.

Where's Maddie, SHACK?

New music and a new artist for me. I have listened to a limited amount of Jazz, and I have wanted to re-listen to only a small portion of what I have listened to. Mingus' album was too cacophonous for me. I did not enjoy this album.

Just made me anxious

It's a jazz album. There is no singing just instruments. It is better than some of the previous jazz albums on this list but I would still not listen to it again.

Well, this probably went over my head. The better passages reminded me of the Taxi Driver soundtrack, but otherwise I found this pretty much unlistenable.

It’s jazz so I have not really any interest… Veryyy long sings that I did not pay attention to…

Man this complicated jazz thing again. I really want to like it, but half the time I think it's emperor's new clothes and they're having a laugh at everyone who says they like it. I'll keep trying though. I hate being out of the loop.

Charles Mingus' epic ballad combining jazz and classical music in an orchestral setting titled 'The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady' released in 1963. This album is in fact one continuous composition divided into four tracks and six movements. Mingus' masterpiece is one of the most acclaimed jazz records of the 20th century, and has also been described as the greatest achievement in orchestration by any composer in jazz history. The music tells an amazing story over the course of the album from an enchanting jazz orchestra. I recommend everyone to lend an ear to this interesting piece of music history.

jazzy wazy

Goed coor op achtergrond

only 4 songs that’s powerful xx very jazzy but i don’t think it’s actually that good couldn’t finish it but it’s okay

Not totally bad, but goes a bit random jazz on you during most tracks, so not my bag baby!

Ich hab Respekt davor, es ist aber wirklich nichts für mich.

Well. That was...music?

Not my vibe, but if I was a middle aged man in 1963 I would vibe heavily to it

I’m of the opinion that improvisational music should be played, not listened to. That is all.

very nice, and also not something I'd ever listen to again. does that make sense.

The Wikipedia article for this one sounded really promising. The musicians are without a doubt talented and the compositions multi-layered and multi-faceted. Yet, I found this album really difficult to listen to. There's a lot of dissonance going on, making the album very jarring and distracting during work. It's a good example of how technical prowess isn't enough if the music is inaccessible.

just too jazzy

Wel bijzondere jazz maar ik houd niet zo veel van jazz

Not really pleasant 2.5/5

Vika biisi jäi kesken. Ei koveta

I have to confess I don't really know the right setting for listening to this. It gets pretty hectic and intense in parts, so I can safely say it's not for work background music. I might need a tutorial on how to properly enjoy it before listening again.

Not the jazz that I can listen to

I have tons of respect Mingus and there’s clearly some talented playing going on here but this is the type of jazz that I feel like I really don’t understand

Was not bad. Just not my style.

It was okay.

Thankfully it was short. Jazz is not my thing.

Extremely tedious to listen to. Definitely nothing you would listen to in the background as I can tell from firsthand experience. Very saxophone/trumpet heavy. Never really gave Jazz a chance. It's not bad per se but I can't seem to dig it much. Maybe it's cause I have little to no exposure in terms of Jazz, but I can't let myself "fall". With my favourite kind of music there usually is this one chord progression, instrument swell, this one part of the vocals paired together with some lyrics that moves me emotionally. This is a whole different beast. I can acknowledge that this is probably good Jazz and there are interesting ideas. However, it is not made for my ears - as of now at least. (In parts it sounds like what I imagine would be the soundtrack of tooth ache if it had one, lol.)

I feel that if l live in the 60s, I will appreciate this.

Crazy ass jazzy trip

Jazz. Not my style. Rinse. Repeat.

Some very nice brass playing although at times self indulgent as Jazz appears to me

Didn't like abstract side 1, but side 2 with flamenco guitar and repeated melodies was good. Reminded me of 1950s cinema and the Taxi Driver soundtrack.

Jazz. No words. Kinda lame.

I didn't dislike _The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady!_ I think the key was that I had it on in the background while I was trying to figure out how to Blender something, and it was over before I really knew it. I'm not really into modern or avant jazz like this- my jazz jams basically end at the end of the 40's, with the death of big band and swing jazz. I think if everything was more coherent, it would have been better, but it's obvious that's not where they wanted to go with this

I first became interested in Mingus when I heard that Joni Mitchell dedicated an album to him. Coincidentally I've been listening to some of his stuff over the last month, especially the album, Ah Um. I would give most of them high marks, but not this. I'm not a fan of free form jazz, especialy with a larger ensemble.

Sorry, but no

As far as jazz goes this was more enjoyable. Can't say I particularly loved it though

probably technically brilliant, but just not fun to listen to.

I'm sure its good if you like avant garde jazz

Great coordination between members, very tight performances. Found the muted horns to be kinda grating by the end. Only slightly related, I have difficulty discerning great jazz from merely good jazz. I know what I like and don't like, and I'd say I only slightly liked this. Fav/least fav is a bit unnecessary for this album.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Saint_and_the_Sinner_Lady -enjoyed the latin guitar on track ‘mode d’

Jazz is and is not my music. To much improvisation is to much for me. But some part of the Tracks were nice. I like slow and easy listening jazz.

Très peu convaincu. Je vois ce que ça peut avoir apporté d'une manière générale, mais pour mon goût personnel ça joue trop sur la dissonance et c'est trop peu structuré, ça me stresse. Dommage !

En osaa, en ymmärrä enkä tajua tällaista musiikkia. Varmaan ihan merkittävä levy ja plaaplaa. Parempi kuin Coltrane.

Not my jam

This was more bearable that the other jazz ones we've had but still not that nice.

I feel bad giving this a 2 because it’s probably a great jazz album but some of the numbers sounded like 2 different bands playing 2 different songs at the same time.

Correct background Jazz

Some ok some songs just noise

Not really into jazz, and this didn’t do it for me on first listen. Maybe more listens will make it grow on me?

a nice listen, both too sparse and too busy for me at points, definite talent but not a jam for me

I've tried to like this album with a half dozen listens over a few years, it just won't take.

Ei torvisoittoa eikä varsinkaan jazzia minulle

Random Jazz as If I were in a Chicago club back room in the 60's or 70's. I'm not. And now I don't ever want to be.

The more jazz I get on here, the more I learn that I just really don't enjoy it.

Would be a 0, but it will have to be a 1. I just cannot get on board with this type of music - not that i think its bad, I just instantly stop listening

Too discordant for my ears.

07/26 Boring

I hated this. The first song was the worst type of jazz. It was so discordant. Terrible. The other songs weren't quite as bad, but I hate jazz and long songs.

Ik moet 1 ster geven want ik houd niet instrumentaal. En jazz. Werd heel zenuwachtig van dit album.

Looked it up on Wikipedia first, which says “it is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz records of all time.” It also says “the album comprises a single continuous composition—partially written as a ballet—divided into four tracks and six movements.” Figured it would be a slog on that basis. Which it was. If you imagine yourself at a Miami hotel, mid 1960s brat-pack era, perhaps on the set of Goldfinger, the first track works. But too much of the rest sounded like a band being dragged blindfolded through treacle to nowhere in particular.

Thank you 1001 Albums, having listened to one of the greatest Jazz albums of all time I now know what I always suspected: Jazz is Not My Thing. Just because it's hard to play doesn't mean it's good. Making me wait through 4 minutes of sound for every 1 minute of music to create an enhancing contrast is a dick move.

Please do not be alarmed. This is the jazz alert. Stay calm. It will all be over soon. Once the sounds have ended you may go back to listening to music again.

Not for me

Kenton ahh album

I listened to this album back in around 2024 and I wrote this; "I love jazz music. However, this album felt like different noises being played into my ears at an annoyingly loud level for a really long period of time it was absolute garbage with some highlights. ( which was when those noises weren’t screaming into my ear )" and honestly, I wasn't that wrong. This album really is a bunch of noises in your ears that are semi relaxing and strange all at the same time. I am not sure if its my cup of tea, especially since I had dreaded returning to this one.

This album sounds like 4-5 guys were each in separate studios and told to play along to the music in their headphones, and none of the music in the headphones was the same. There's jazz I like and then there's this freeform stuff, which is what music would sound like if you taught housecats to play instruments.

Messy and noisy

Damit kann ich nichts anfangen.

There was definitely a lot happening. A little anxiety inducing. Did I love it? No. But that’s ok, music is cool because there’s something for everyone. This one just wasn’t for me. (4 songs, 39 mins)

The Jazz keeps happening.

Lovely and relaxing !! Fav song is ‘Track A’.

Not my genre

Annoying. I feel like people pretend to like this to appear sophisticated.

I dont like this album

not my type

I’ll often rate jazz albums two stars because I respect it even though I don’t really enjoy it much. But this was just too unpleasant. Another reviewer used the word cacophany. And that’s perfect.

I have decided I just don't like jazz

The description in Apple Music made this sound like some amazing, groundbreaking work but I couldn’t say the same thing. It was a confusing mess. Makes me wonder what they were thinking when they recorded it…“Hey, let’s all play at the same time and out of tune and call it hip!”

I can't lie, I don't see the value in this one. It's simultaneously too prescribed to qualify as "jazz" and too chaotic to qualify as "must-hear", especially while I still have a pulse. I gain nothing by hearing this, and you likely don't either.

Jesus Christ. I actually enjoy Jazz and Jazz fusion compared to the average cretin. This was so BAD it’s not even mid. Want to listen to an incoherent Jazz jam session where half the instruments enter and exit at random intervals? Well listen to this shit!

Not for me

Musik, man får angst af Jeg bliver aldrig fan af jazz 1.6

I can't get into this. It's noisy and all over the place.

I’m just not sophisticated enough to distinguish good jazz from bad jazz. But this sounded like terrible jazz at times. Yes yes yes, I know it’s supposed to be like this, but in places they all seemed to be playing different songs. My brain just doesn’t compute that, so it will be a hard pass for me.

I hate jazz, and I hated this jazz as much as any jazz I’ve ever hated.

It was okay.

Not a fan

didn’t listen fully to it. Sorry just not my jam rn

Some of this (especially the start of track B & C) reminded me of orchestral pieces. Like a nice piano concerto. Unfortunately I find the jazz instruments to be far more grating than orchestral ones when they join in.
