Live And Dangerous

Feel like it wasn’t bad music but I didn’t like listening to it. The guitar and drum solos are sick but they bore me. Don’t think the listening experience of the album as an album is very good :/

It's a live album without any of the fun from the crowd. I think the overdubs really took away from what this could have been. I agree with a previous reviewer - it's like a flat beer.

Other than ‘The boys are back in town’ not many inspired songs on this ‘live album’. I use that term loosely as it was pointed out that this live recording had been dubbed and changed repeatedly from its OG performance. 2/5.

I'm not sure why we needed a live Thin Lizzy album. Over an hour is much too long for this band of very samey songs. Look, I'm not against The Boys Are Back In Town, but a lot of their songs sound an awful lot like that one. Not sure if any of their studio albums are better - I don't intend to find out - but if this is the best way to introduce someone to Thin Lizzy, then - and I'm sure I'll say this many more times before this list is done - maybe we don't have to listen to it before we die.

Wasn't ever much of a TL fan. They do have some classics, but hearing them live didn't really change anything for me.

This feels definitively like a "rock" album, what someone out there thinks is the peak of the genre, despite sounding extrem safe and predictable by modern standards. All your usual suspects are here, guitar solos that really aren't that memorable, far too long drum solos, and of course a whole section introducing people in the band as if those listening to the album can see them. Is there stuff here that caught me by surprise? Sure, and of course songs like The Boys Are Back in Town have earned their place in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame, but there isn't enough here to stand out as one of the great live albums to me, and when I realize there are some blatant live picks over this one, I scratch my head even more. Not bad, just generic.

Standard 70’s rock that is done way better by other bands. I’d rather their studio album(s) be put here rather than an hour and a half live album.

I never really liked live albums so despite this having great songs, I didn't mesh with it too much. Additionally, while thin lizzy is a pretty famous band, I've never thought too much of them. It has some good songs and a good live album but ultimately meh when compared to other studio albums.

That was painful. I don't know if I didn't like it because it was live or because it just wasn't my jam. No tracks I'd save, I suppose 'Boys Are Back in Town' is iconic, but yeah I was not having a good time start to finish.

i don't like this band. Not un-listenable but so 70s and not even sounding Irish.

Put me back in jail if it means I don't have to listen to this album anymore. Look, I like Thin Lizzy fine. I may even have a fond memory or two of playing their music on Guitar Hero, but I don't need a bloated live album of Thin Lizzy. No one does. And this album isn't even "live." It's a compilation of live shows overdubbed with studio fixes. Again, all fine and good, but this type of album does NOTHING to enhance the average listener's appreciation of the whole wide world of music. No reason to include it on this list.

Neither truly live or dangerous, Lizzy’s big night out is awful bloated for an artist purporting to be thin.

Anytime I hear Thin Lizzy on the radio, I change the station. I have none of their songs on my playlists. They seem like cheesy disposable 70's rock to me. That said, I didn't hate this album. Massacre is a really good song. Still not something I would listen to again.

With cornball songs like "The Boys are Back in Town" they're about as dangerous as an overfed and declawed arthritic house cat.

BL: Thin Lizzie is not a band I’m particularly passionate about in any way. I remember being about 12 and performing “Jail Break” on stage in front of the rest of our theatre group. They didn’t think too much of it, I didn’t think too much of it. He wanted to learn it cos it was a piece for his grade 3 or 4 guitar I believe. Since that there’s been little to no listening of them from me. I can appreciate “whiskey in the jar” as a song but other than that I don’t think I’d really go out my way to listen to them. AL: there is not much I can say about the content of this album and yet so much around the context of this album. The music? Functional at best, mostly middle of the road music from a couple hit wonder 70s rock band. One track that stood out was “Massacre”, surprisingly good. However my main criticism of this album is it isn’t technically a live album. As a lot of it is overdubbed, not good enough to be a studio album but not a pure live album this stands as a unique but not provocative example of interference. The one thing I will say that’s evident from this is that Phil Lynott is very clearly an amazing frontman, having the crowd wrapped around his finger (unless the cheering is overdubbed too). Wouldn’t recommend a listen to this. Would maybe be better if it was a single album as opposed to a double. FT: “Massacre” 2/5

I only knew Thin Lizzy through the boys are back in town and even that song was totally underwhelming on this album. If you have to select the best performance from several shows AND still have to do overdubs you probably are not good enough a live band to release a live album. This lacks energy in every way, the songs are mediocre as well. Not horrible but will not play again.

This album has got to have been my biggest disappointment from the 1001 albums so far. Previously, I'd heard one song from this album: "The Boys are Back in Town." I heard it on the radio, but I'm thinking it was probably the studio version I heard. My dad told me it was Thin Lizzy, and I remember him saying: "this song is all about the riff" (I'm young- born this century- so a lot of the music on this list is more my dad's era). I agreed with him. The lyrics aren't that great, but the riff has stuck in my head ever since, after only hearing the song that one time (I never heard it again). However, I like my lyrics. It takes more than a good riff for me to like a song. Despite that, the first few tracks left me pleasantly surprised. The lyrics were a lot better, the musicianship was top notch, the energy and overall sound was really my vibe, and I was genuinely thinking this might turn out to be my first five star album so far. However, it only got worse from there. From those first few great songs, all of a sudden the quality of song writing just deteriorated, and I would even say most of the track list is terrible. By the end it was just hard to listen to. Favourite tracks: Emerald, Still In Love With You, Southbound

lol this isn't even a real live album, it's a bunch of live recordings with overdubs on top. almost every live album from the 70s that is mythologized is mostly held in that esteem because the very idea of live recordings of rock 'n' roll bands was revolutionary. and they're not bad. but "you must listen before you die"? GTFO with that, boomers.

Better than I expected

I had heard of Thin Lizzy and a couple of their songs but didn't know or remember much more. It's definitely 70s rock and sounds like it was fun. Not the band's fault at all, but because I grew up on this sound and have heard it for decades, and because I have for quite some time now listened to all sorts of music often with a lot of complexity to it, it's really hard for my ears to hear it as interesting. Just too many soundalikes out there. The band performs very well, so again, not a reflection of them. Just oversaturation to my listening ears.

This is an odd choice, the only album on the list by this band is a live recording, or rather a series of recorded concerts. If the original songs are not good enough to make the list how do live versions make them better. Thin Lizzy were a very good band, they found their sweet spot with the twin leads but it was all down to the charisma of Phil Lynott. This collection showcases how good they could be live. It would have been better to just record one concert and tinker with that rather than tinker with several - or better still leave it raw as concert goers experienced it.

I fucking hate live albums... It's ok. Would probably give this a 3 maybe a 4 if it was a studio album. That is the only thing keeping this thing from being a 1 2/5

Oof, not sure about this. I can enjoy one or two Thin Lizzy songs as it goes, they're fun. But 17 in a row? No. For what is basically a best of compilation, I only recognised two songs I think. By the time the boys were back in town I'd spiritually gone home because I was bored. By Warriors, you can throw as many virtuosic guitar solos at me as you want, because I've mentally checked out completely. Checks - 5 songs left. Ok, we can do this. Songs that broke the mold and so I enjoyed: Massacre, Emerald.

Honestly, why are live albums in the book? Most of them don't bring anything new to the table.

A live album. Joy. Decent-enough tracks, clearly a talented outfit, but not something I'd get excited by and an immediate 1 star review by virtue of being a live album. Maybe 2 for not being painful?

Live albums are hard to appreciate, and this is no exception to that. The album seems like they had a good time, the crowd seemed like they had a good time, but that is just it. The listener of this live album, did not have a good time. Expectations were already low, and perhaps a little bias is here in that this album had been touted as one of the best live albums to ever be produced. The metrics used to determine that are unknown, but from a listeners' perspective, the album was just a live album. Did this impact the way live albums were produced going forward? No indicators there. Is Thin Lizzy culturally relevant at the time? Yes, and this album was produced at their peak. Recognizable hits like "The Boys Are Back In Town" sounded better on their respective albums, the nostalgic trip was a little too familiar. Live albums should (as a matter of opinion) convey a little more of the heart and soul of a band's catalog that is hidden from a studio production. Not so much of that was here, exceptions being crowd engagement in between songs. Maybe that is what a live album is, but in the year of our Lord, 2023, the expectation that this was an arguably great live album is no longer met.

Solid, no problems with it but likely wont return

Seth MacFarlane is a borderline 21st century genius. Peter Griffin is up there with Frank Costanza as one of the greatest of comic characters. Where am I going with this? We have a nice little riff going in our house where upon hearing a particular type of song, we nominate it as a Peter Griffin type song, one that he'd funk out to with Cleveland etc. Listening to this took me to Kiss Alive and Rock and Roll Allnite, comfy bedfellows the Lizz and the boys in face paint, and they are purveyors of Peter Griffin type rocking out madness par excellence. Here we are post Cream/Yes/Deep Purple et al and the riffing in unison style of stuff (much beloved by Spinal Tap) but pre hair metal and all that palaver. The thing with these bands is that they could play, were tight, well rehearsed and had played in every gin joint and bar she'd ever avoided walking into. Clearly this record shows that a gig with Phil and boys was always going to be a good night out, even if towards the end you started hanging out at the bar, going the chat with the one with the nice blue eye shadow and Farrah Fawcett hair. What's the problem then pop fans? Firstly no good songs bar Jailbreak, their cover of Rosalie and of course The Boys Are Back. They were limited songwriters period. Secondly, they clearly got stuck in with a particular sound and arrangements and just could not bust out, or didn't have the ability to bust out.

Basic. Inauthentic. Shit.

A relatively solid 90 minutes of exactly what you'd expect from a Thin Lizzy live(ish) album. I was going to give it a respectable 3, but there's a drum solo towards the end that is phased to shit and made me genuinely upset

The title is dumb, the cover shot moronic and the music still not exactly genius in contrast. It's not hard to hear how the '80s made this bunch extinct. The vocals are good enough to wonder how effective he might have been in another context. The big bank-y, coruscating guitars sound cool but seem wasted in the service of utter rock cliches. There might not be a more quintessential '70s sound than these guys and I don't mean that in a good way. Also, way points off for overdubbing parts.

This wasn't a great live album. I like Thin Lizzy but I didn't enjoy this.

At this point in life I don't care for hard rock except for the bands or songs I already like. As for this album, I like The Boys Are Back in Town and that's about it.

If you want to be in that crowd, then live can swallow you and flood you with the vibe. If you are just listening to learn, it is hard to get into that groove.

A proper rock band, just not my thing.

A live album gives the opportunity for a band to create a larger-than-life experience, an LP that conveys the excitement of the crowd and experimentation of the band on playback. Kind of hard to excel at that when you play the tracks straight off their respective LPs with no flair and the crowd can't be bothered to clap/respond in time with the music.

I need a lot more from a live album. I don't love the source material and it wasn't enriched by the mediocre live recording.

I was thinking to myself that this album sounds very well produced for a live album, but according to Wikipedia there is some controversy surrounding the use of overdubs on the record, which would explain that. Overall I think it's a decent album, Thin Lizzy had some good songs and their energy is captured well here. I don't really think it's notably different enough from any other live albums to vault it into a "best of all time" list though. Beyond a couple extended guitar solos there aren't any crazy long jams or deviations from their original material, to me it feels like a worse-quality studio album. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing, but not what I personally want in a live album, so points docked for that. Fav Tracks: Jailbreak, Dancing in the Moonlight, Still in Love with You

The name of the record and the cover shot are ridiculous -- could not be more so. It's easy to see why this dinosaur disappeared from the earth not tool long after this.

Read the wiki - this album was made in lieu of a new studio album. Some of the album has been overdubbed with studio recording as well, which was a little controversial among critics, but overall it's still high on many lists of best live albums. I wanted to appreciate it more, but I honestly didn't love it. They sounded great, technically, but I didn't enjoy it on a personal level. I won't stop giving all different genres of metal a try, though.

It was good and energetic, but I always have a problem with live albums. No matter the production, the vocal performances are always lacking or pack a lot of “pop” from the microphones.

Couple good tracks

Hard rock isn't really my thing at all so this doesn't do a ton for me but I will say that I found it less unpleasant than I expected. The joke about asking if girls want a little Irish in them was gross though.

Awful sound quality. Shocked to learn Huey Lewis playing harmonica at one show. Standouts include Southbound, Jailbreak, Still in love with you, and The Rocker.

Minus a star for it being live. It was probably super fun in person but it never translates well to an album, to me.

Live and Dangerous by Thin Lizzy (1978) As live albums go, this one is very good, but it’s still a live album, which means, for hard rock, it’s not very good. Importuning chatter with the audience, lame verbal song introductions, even lamer band member introductions, off-tempo handclaps, applause interruptions in the quiet moments, lowbrow yelling, artificial endings, etc., etc.—all this takes away from the music. Technically, it is generally well recorded (for a live album) but there are many weak spots, including, for example, a far too subdued saxophone solo by John Earle on “Dancing In the Moonlight” and harmonica solo by Huey Lewis (yes!) on “Baby Drives Me Crazy”. What a waste of electrons. Thin Lizzy gives powerful performances, tight and experienced. God, these guys rock! Lead vocals by Phil Lynott are strong but lacking variety in his melodies and stylings. (Why do the lead solo parts all sound like “The Boys Are Back In Town”?) Bass (Lynott) and drums (Brian Downey) are outstanding. Guitar performances (Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham) are top-notch professional (especially in tandem!), even if they sometimes sound like they were recorded with microphones placed here in the listener’s living room, while the guys were playing in the high school gymnasium next door. The live version of “The Boys Are Back in Town” is far, far inferior to the studio version. Dud. Brian Downey’s superb drum solo on “Sha-La-La” (with fantastic slow phase shifting) is superbly screwed up by a hand-clapping audience that gets lost on the tempo change. Everybody laughs and has a good time, but I’m steaming. The point of this criticism is that nowadays, with streaming, the listener can put a collection of tracks together as a playlist of readily available studio versions. Why even listen to a tax-minimizing product (They admit it!) that amounts to a not-so-greatest hits compilation? The takeaway emotion here is regret either (1) that I wasn’t listening to the studio recordings, or (2) that I wasn’t at the concerts. Maybe there should be a list of “1001 Concerts You Should Have Attended But Didn’t—Now Go Die!” 2/5

Thin Lizzy is the epitome of a bog standard rock band. There isn't a whit of imagination or innovation in the song structures, melodies, bass lines, riffs, guitar solos, or for that matter anywhere throughout the running time of Live And Dangerous. Nada, nothing, zilch. That said, they are a rock solid touring band. It turns out that in a live setting, Thin Lizzy displays an energy and frontman Phil Linott a charisma which is nonexistent on their studio recordings. 67 minutes is a long time to listen to boring, by the numbers rock 'n roll, but thanks to Thin Lizzy's surefootedness as a touring band, it passes by relatively painlessly. Seriously though, this belongs on ANY kind of list?

Not sure what this being live does to make the album better. There's not an extra energy that the lead singer seems to bring; in fact he doesn't really sound excited at all. Apparently, it also isn't even all live, as the sound has been "cleaned up," which I don't understand. Again, what's the point of this being live?

An album to respect but hard to admire. The band are clearly talented musicians but I didn’t feel a spark with these songs - which feels especially strange for a supposed live album. Almost too polished - not quite rough enough. There are better examples of their style of hard rock...

I guess this could be just the right album for a really specific moment where I'm driving a convertible Trans-Am and reliving a scene from Dazed and Confused, but most of the time, it's not what I want to listen to.

Ihr Versprechen war verpflichtend: jedem Fan wird ein Live Album gewidmet. Bravo! Die Fans lieben es, ich kann’s verstehen, liebe selbst aber durchaus kühler, wobei ausgerechnet „Still in Love with You“ mein Herz in Flammen setzt. Leon Goretzka gibt 2.2

Das ist Hard Rock, und genau das will er sein. Jedes (von ihm selbst geschaffene) Klischee bedienen, wahnsinnig authentisch. Und dabei auch noch sehr gut eingefangener Live-Sound. Dem Proletarier in mir zucken die Luftgitarrenfinger, dem Snob gerinnt das spöttische Grinsen zum Gesichtskrampf. Emerald verursacht mir schon zu Beginn Unbehagen, Southbound direkt danach find ich nen ehrlichen Rocker. Hier gilt es auszubalancieren und dabei nicht mit den Eiern auf dem Drahtseil zu landen. Ok, es geht weiter mit Klischees: ehrlicher Rock, Schweiss, Pathos, auch mal ein Saxophon. Klaus-Lage-Feelings. Und schlimme Balladen dürfen natürlich nicht fehlen für die Jungs und Mädchen und ihre Mitesser. Den Eiern gehts noch gut, aber dicker werden sie nun gerade nicht. Apropos Dicke Eier: Warriors und das Drumsolo in Sha-La-La (!) find ich dann doch wieder ganz geil, auf ihre Art und mit meinem inneren Pickelteenie. Am Ende siegt aber doch der Snob, fürchte ich. 2,9 Punkte, die sich aber leider trotzdem nur nach 2 Sternen anfühlen.

Oh boy, another live album. I would’ve loved an actual Thin Lizzy project. The irony here is that the songs I love (“Jailbreak” and “The Boys are Back in Town”) aren’t the ones I liked on this because I just prefer the studio version. A couple tracks I did enjoy, that I hadn’t heard before, but as a matter of principle I can’t give this a high rating. Live albums are a paradox, and, with few exceptions, I don’t think they should exist. Favorite tracks: Still in Love With You, Sha-La-La. Album art: Ooooh a picture of the band performing live! every song sounds the same

These are fun songs, but I generally find live albums kind of lame and this is no exception. By the end I was thoroughly bored of it. Feels more like a "fan favorite" for hardcore Thin Lizzy fans than a true classic to me.

I neither enjoyed nor didn't enjoy this. It was just sort of there, doing it's thing, not really garnering much attention from me. I know these songs, they do nothing for me.

What is the appeal?

So this is a live album but its a mashup of performances from different shows. That's cheating. The fact that it's live doesn't even add anything. Sometimes they'll say something cheeky between songs and then there's a polite applause after each track, which is actually just annoying. You would think if they are cherry picking from different gigs they would choose ones with more energy. The singing also pisses me off. He sounds exactly like someone who would wear those leather pants. The guitars are impressive i guess but cliche. Towards the end of the album I feel like I'm listening to a pantomime. Cringe.

I didn’t get all the way through this one. I’ve never really been much of Thin Lizzy fan, and this live album did nothing to change that for me.

I'm not going to lie, I dedn't listen to this album fully through. I REALLY disliked this album and I don't really know why. I do usually listen to rock and metal but for some reason this album just gave me a headache.

To me it sounded like more vocally talented version of Elivis and that classic 80s rock combined. Not bad. I don’t like that the album is only available in live.

It's extremely rare that a Live album is good, and that being said, unless you were there to see the actual show, they're almost always a bad album... This isn't a good album.

Live albums are for fans. The exceptions prove the rule. This is not that exception.

I'm really sorry. I've never liked Thin Lizzy. I've heard "The Boys are Back In Town" one too many times and just never loved it to begin with. Sad to say that out of the album, this ear worm was the only song that had something exciting to it.

Being a live recording it might give the fans something close to what they may remember from their own live experience. Since I fon't have that I'd rather listen to a studio version. Cliche filled crap. A song about cowboys, another about cowgirls. The bar for a double live album should be high. This had bad songs, poor recording quality, and a pathetic album cover.

I don't get live albums. I like Thin Lizzy, I am familiar with the hits. I like a few of them. I like all the songs on this album less, because they aren't miked well, they aren't mixed well, they aren't performing at their best. I know the studio is fake, it's only the best takes spliced together, with mixing and production that is impossible live. I get that. I also like live music. I like the crowd atmosphere, the vamping, the crowd play, the whole experience. I hate most live records. They feel like those podcasts that are just some trust fund kids talking about nothing. I don't want to have a parasocial relationship with you, I get no joy from hearing other people like you. I want the art you choose to release. I want my music like any other art form. I want you to diligently craft a work that I experience. I don't want to watch you paint, I don't want to watch you edit a film, I don't want to play half your game. I want the painting, I want the film, I want a finished game that I know you're not going to drastically change. I don't want to hear you create an album, I want the album. The album that you made, with thought behind the mixing, the production, the order of the songs. All those artistic choices are lost in a live album. They're replaced with FOMO and parasocial hype. It's the laugh track of music. Thin Lizzy is a good band. They play well for the most part. I don't want to hear this version of any of their songs, because they don't elevate any of them.

People complain about all the post punk on the list, but the real scourge are all the boring 70s hard rock live albums that basically serve as greatest hits albums because these bands weren't able to string together a proper album and instead relied on their half-decent singles.

Let me just say this first. I really can’t stand live albums. A live album always drips of pretentiousness, with self doubt sewed in between each song. As if they need to hear their fans cheering them on to give their work any credibility. With that being said this album is apparently not so live as they dubbed the shit out of it. Makes me think if they performed on SNL they would have lip synced a la Ashlee Simpson. Ashlee at least had “vocal cord inflammation”. What is Lizzy’s excuse for needing to dub their “Live” album? So my thoughts left are “WTF”. This might be the fakest album I’ve ever heard. Every song felt like an eternity to get through. This should be removed off this list immediately.

I should copy paste my review from almost every other live album on this list. But I just keep writing it over and over. If you don't like the band, you likely won't like the live show. There are some exceptions. Cash at Folsom prison for example. Shows that had a purpose that elevated the music in a way rather than taking a snapshot of the band at a moment in time. It's not that this show or the music in it is played poorly. It's that a concert recording is normally serves three purposes. 1. To give the fans something close to what they may remember from their own live experience. 2. To cap off an era of a bands output. Like a thesis statement to an era. 3. To fulfill a contractual agreement with a record label. None of these reasons are bad. But when it comes to the band Thin Lizzy, I personally don't fit into any of those categories. And most listeners won't. This record is not culturally significant. It doesn't do anything that hasn't been done before, or better. It's just a live recording. And should not be in the book.

This site really wants me to get my fill on live albums. Can't say I complain. Like all of the other live albums I've listened to, I think it's pretty hard to get a feel for these songs when I have no prior experience with the studio versions. To a non Thin Lizzer, and with zero audience interaction or any transformation of these songs that I can gleam, this album was excruciatingly long and boring for me. On the bright side, I had no idea that "The Boys Are Back In Town" was an Irish export. That's pretty cool

Ik schrik vannacht nog wakker badend in het zweet, met de stem van Phil Lynott die roept 'this song is called...'. Er kwam geen einde aan. Kan best wel een beetje no nonsense rock & roll aan, maar dit ging me een uur te lang door. Tuurlijk, 'The Boys Are Back In Town' is een legendarische track, maar ik vind een live versie met nog meer overbodig gitaargezever niet perse beter. Bij het Hendrix-esque 'Warriors' ging ik nog even op het puntje van m'n stoel zitten. Maar het verandert de situatie niet, dat een live album van een hardrock band mijn week niet echt lekker breekt. 5/10 Highlights: Warriors

Dit zou zomaar eens het duizend-en-eerste album van de lijst kunnen zijn geweest. 'Jongens, we hebben er nog 1 nodig. Nou doe dan maar die van Thin Lizzy'. Toch ff in de Wiki gedoken, wat is hier zo bijzonder aan? Wordt blijkbaar gekenmerkt als één van de beste live platen. Is ook niet alleen een opname, maar een serieuze productie van Tony Visconti. Schijnbaar is 75% overdubbed en zijn er zelfs audience geluiden gemaakt met een keyboard. Waar zit ik dan in godsnaam naar te luisteren??!? Een band hun topvorm ik de tour na hun grootste hits? Geen idee. Het is gewoon bij elkaar geknipt en geplakt. Quand l'album part avec une version live moins bonne d'une chanson déjà ordinaire, on sait qu'on n'aura pas droit à un chef-d'oeuvre. Honnêtement je ne comprends pas les gens qui disent que cet album est plein d'énergie, pour moi ça sonne comme si le chanteur venait de se réveiller. La production est à peine meilleure qu'un live bootleg, c'est insultant de savoir qu'il y a eu en plus des retouches en studio. Je ne vois vraiment pas les louanges que cet album a droit à. 2/10

Maybe I’ve never been a 70s hard rock fan. Or a live album fan. I’m doing this project to try to explore more. But I was glad when this album was over. Every song just felt almost indistinguishable from the next and from any other hard rock band of the time.

Generic rock? Live album? Goes on for 90 minutes? Oh boy, now we're really cooking with gas. The only people capable of making good live albums are Johnny Cash, Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain. I don't care for this type of rock, and I especially don't care for this type of rock but in worse audio quality, with people yelling in between songs.
