Reviews (page 11 of 12)
I'm a lifelong metalhead and frankly this does nothing for me. I grew up on Metallica and all the Bay area thrash bands then moved to the Florida death metal in the '90s. I understand this band has laid the foundation for many heavier bands in the next decade. But for me? Meh. I think it's also their prog tendencies at times which works against my personal tastes. They're all very talented musicians. This is a great sounding live album by the way. "Massacre" is probably my favorite tune because you can see it setting the groundwork for Maiden and/or Metallica. But it's not for me.
It's very strange listening to a live album of a band I hardly know anything about. I guess it was fine? Not really essential in my opinion.
A bit of a hoot, a bit boring. Right on the edge. Was charmed by the lyric ‘I always get chocolate stains on my pants’. Enjoyed the bonus saxophone. I like guitar solos but GOD this is going on a long time. Largely uninspiring, far too long for how samey it is. The Boys Are Back In Town should be on one of those CDs we send into space for aliens, though.
1 hour, 12 minutes, and 20 seconds of songs that are not as good as The Boys are Back in Town, plus 4 minutes and 40 seconds of The Boys are Back in Town.
I like Thin Lizzy. I think they are an underrated band. I love the hits (The boys are back in town, dancing in the moonlight and Jailbreak). I like some deep cuts (Emerald specifically is awesome). I actually got into them through a cover of Emerald by the band Mastodon. Great cover. Just a great Irish band. Butttt i just don't care about 99% of live albums and this one fits in that 99%. These are very accurate, well performed versions of Thin Lizzy songs... and they're just 2% shittier than the original studio versions. I don't see the point. I did chuckle when he told that pickup line to the whole audience... maybe it was a new pick line at that time. Who knows. The singer does sound quite good live. The guitars are good live. I still am just left with an overall shrug. I'm sure in person is was awesome... but i'm not there.... so it's a 2.5 for me.
Thin Lizzy rule but if you're putting live slizzy albums on a list like this, you're thin on ideas. Apparently this is the only Lizzy album on this list also. Jailbreak?! Fuck's sake. Sometimes I'm not sure how the clown who wrote this book kept getting work. If course this has endless 5s. Staying employed by pandering to boomer sensibilities - a tale as old as time.
Some good songs here but I'm not a fan of the live recording
A live Thin Lizzy album is probably amongst the things I want to listen to the least on this current day.
an album you'd need to only experience live standout tracks: they all sound the same to me
This album is a textbook case of much ado about nothing. It features heavy guitar riffs and even more intense solos, but beneath it all, the melodies are pure pop. Sure, it probably sounds great in a stadium after a few—or maybe several—glasses of beer. That said, Thin Lizzy is clearly a group of consummate professionals. But as the saying goes, the Titanic was built by professionals; the Ark by amateurs. A prime example of this mediocrity is “Dancing in the Moonlight (It’s Caught Me in Its Spotlight)”—seriously, that saxophone? I had to skip “Still in Love with You”; it’s the polar opposite of everything I enjoy in music. One more slow, overly emotional track and I’d have dropped the whole album. So, apologies, Phil—by the time “Cowboy Song” came on, I had to turn it off. The only reason I’m not giving this a 1 is because, from a technical standpoint, the performance is flawless.
3/10…hard rock / 70‘s rock
I already know I'm not going to like this. I hate live songs when I am not there to listen to it live because it just defeats the whole purpose. I was so happy to see that it was only 4 songs. Then I compared the live version of jailbreak to the not live version. I actually liked the live version better, which is crazy for me. I do however like the not live version of the boys are back in town more than the live version.
Very lively and fun, but wasn't my taste!
Idk I don’t have a lot of thoughts on this album. I was kinda burnt out due to this being right after ZZ Top. 3/10 Favorite tracks - moonlight, boys are back in town
Some good songs, but this is ultimate classic rock radio. Solid live band, sounded like a fun show.
This should be right up my alley. Maybe it’s because I’m a bit sick, I’m a bit tired but I just couldn’t get into this. I don’t really care for a live album full of songs I’ve never heard (except for The Boys Are Back In Town). Thin Lizzy just didn’t really appeal to me I guess.

Yup, still not liking Live albums all that much. Very few have caught my attention. I like Thin Lizzy a lot, but this album would NOT have been the one that makes this list. 2.25/5
I don't know. Loved them from my high school years. They just feel like a 1 trick pony. A couple great songs and a bunch of others that sound just like them.
This one wasn’t for me, but maybe I’m missing something?? 🤷🏼♀️
Live and Best Of albums really shouldn't be on this list unless they are more than sensational. This is a less than average album from a band that makes less than mediocre music. They also cheated and doctored it up in the studio. It seems this band really likes their music though and they play very well. I just don't want to hear any of their songs.
Not my cup of tea
Not actually live (for some of it) and so on the nose middle of the road rock. Butttt the boys are back in town
I couldn't do it..
I've never been a big fan of 'The Boys are Back in Town' so I kinda knew this wasn't really going to be for me. I can't tell if it's the mastering or the songs themselves but they all had this weird sedate quality to them, they kinda sound like you've just woken up from a 3 hour nap. Doesn't really have the energy of other live albums i've heard. It kinda just sounds like a studio album with cheering in between songs. I like Phil Lynott's vocals I just wish he was in something other than Thin Lizzy.
Love Thin Lizzy but not a huge fan of live albums
Huge fan of the energy and performance of all musicians involved in this album. Lynott's bass and vocals are impeccable, and guitars never hit a bum note. What lets this down is the concept - a mishmash of archived live footage around the world, overdubbed (who knows to what end) to smooth out the kinks. The whole spirit of a live album is therefore totally eroded to a compilation album with a few cheers between tracks. Best Tracks: - Massacre - Suicide - The Boys Are Back In Town Worst Tracks: - The Rocker Rating: 4/10
I have heard a couple of times that the true magic of Thin Lizzy happened live on stage. So why was this overlong "live" album cut together from different shows and overdubbed later? Feels a bit flat, and although the crowd(s) seem(s) to enjoy it, I'm not quite there - hard rock is not my cup of tea.
If I loved this band I,'d love this album, but because i'm not familiar with them, it felt a little forced.
Dygtig band, fed guitarlyd, kunne sagtens have undværet den her.
Thin Lizzy was never really my music..a live album is not something i ever wanted to hear from them..
Meh.
Acceptable I guess
It wasn't terrible. If it came on the radio I would probably still change the channel but at least I wouldn't smash the mute button beforehand.
I like Thin Lizzy. There is nothing remarkable about this album. Additional point off because it is a live album with alleged overdubs.
This was find. Kinda dull.
It was a rock album. It sounded like all others to me.
I’m glad they have fans. It’s not even music I find terrible. It’s just not something I get excited by. 2.5/5
Generic hard rock stuff. Have both things I generally don't like in albums: Live and double.
😒
Jailbreak is a banger but apart from that the album was mostly dull. I was quite bored by the end of it.
This feels like a live albums recorded in a studio. If that makes sense.. Here’s the thing. It sounds like it’s been polished up for release - it has a very, dare I say it, flat sound. But the appeal of live albums is the unpredictability that comes with (sort of) spontaneity. One doesn’t get anything of that here.
I usually like 70s rock but this album wasn't really my taste and it is also too long. It is also from different live shows, and many songs are also overdubbed, so not quite sure which songs are really live and which are more studio work. Since it's the only album by this band on this challenge, I assume they don't have a strong studio album that could be on this list. I appreciate the musicianship because they are good musicians, but this album isn't for me overall.
The very definition of good, not great. Thin Lizzy has some great tunes over the years, but something about this live album doesn't speak to me. 3/10
too rowdy for me
Kind of boring rock album, but these guys do seem pretty charming. Kinda hair metaly.
Back to rock'n'roll, ohni d drugs und ohni de sex.
I feel like you have to like that artist to appreciate live albums, and while Thin Lizzy is in the "alright" bin for me, 76 minutes of live (or live enough) is a stretch.
Now, maybe it’s just that I got my fill of this type of screeching guitar-driven, anthemic, stadium rock (like I got my fill of shooting guns and drinking in gravel pits) in my youthful years. Maybe I’m not the nostalgic type. Maybe I’m not a fan of guitar played mostly above the 7th fret by people who ply the guitar like everyone else. Maybe Kiss is enough of all this for me. Meh Rock…
En bra låt, men annats meh
not bad, but would rather listen to the originals if i needed to. 2.5
Live album=worse
On a different day, I might have been more open to this... but today was not that day...
I hate live albums, the cheering seems propagandizing. Music is louder than the voices. The Boys Are Back in Town is 5/5 so overall 2.5/5
Good live recording but the songs aren't strong enough to make it noteworthy
Extremely medium, would have been a 3 if not live
their songs are pretty basic and uninspired to begin with, and the live instrumentation doesn't add anything.
Bien
Inte min favorit men det sköljer förbi.
2 Stars (5/15)
There's a lot of live albums on this list. I don't know. It's OK, I guess. I have no need to ever listen to it again.
For me this was somewhat dull predictable formula arena rock. Too many long and uninteresting guitar solos. I lost interest after a few songs.
I don’t have time for all this. There’s a number of reasons this record’s placement on the list annoys me, but after listening to it for over an hour, I just don’t want it to take up more of my time. Listenable.
Thin Lizzy is pretty cool, but this is a lot of Thin Lizzy and the overdubs kinda ruin the live feel.
profoundly mediocre and it's not even live. boggles the mind how this "yeah i'm a rock n roll guy and i fuck girls and i shred" shit has ever been anything other than embarrassing for everyone involved
Often felt quite lacklustre, picked up pace about mid way through but then lost it. Also overdubs on a live album? Seriously?
Generic 70s hard rock live album. Nothing really set it apart
A LIVE album? Meh. At BEST.
The Good: The Best Live Double Album according to the experts at NME The Bad: It isn’t all live… The Ugly: I’m not a massive Thin Lizzy fan… Boy oh boy, this one I had to sit through… and hope for time to go flying by. Undeniable that there are some toe tappers on the album, so it wasn’t all wasted time. Still, I could have done with a “normal” live album, instead of two...
Never heared an Irish rock back before, I do like! Like the guitar portion in Emerald. <<dancing in the moonlight, still in love with you.
My initial thought was I really don’t need an hour and 17 minutes of Thin Lizzy in my life. The album confirmed it.
Fav: The Boys Are Back In Town Least Fav: Sha-La-La Way too long, with way too much filler. These factors outweigh the actually good songs and leaves me disappointed for my 100th album
Live albums suck sometimes and this is one of those times.
I’ve never got on with the limited Thin Lizzy I’ve ever heard. I just don’t like Lynott’s vocals and delivery style for whatever reason. Other than that they just seem an ‘ok’ hard rock band. The only tracks I enjoyed were the rock-out/jam style parts in Emerald and Sha-la-la where there were no lyrics. Otherwise it seemed like quite a few songs with a lyrical variation on ‘The boys are back….’ Won’t be heading back here.
The first and last were 3s but the middle songs were 2s.
Listened to this playing Mario kart. Was alright
Never really cared for these guys. I put them in the same category as lover boy and later redo speedwagen. Mostly because of their big hit the boys are back in town I guess but this album they were actually rocking pretty hard. Still didn’t like it that much but I do respect them more. 2.5
Meh. This band has a few songs that are pretty catchy, but overall they’re a tad overplayed for me. I made it to The Boys Are Back In Town, got bored after, then stopped listening. A live album needs to be something really special to deserve to be on this list. This album ain’t it. Maybe I’ll enjoy their studio albums more.
Live albums are interesting in the fact that the audience becomes part of the musical experience. As a listener, I always feel kind of left out because I wasn’t actually present at the concert. This isn’t my genre so I’m fine with being outside the Thin Lizzy bubble.
I mean it's okay, but it ain't great.
I just don't see the appeal of THIS specific live rock album compared to the many others out there. What makes this one special?
pretty good... voices of old people was the best song hands down
I'm generally not a big fan of this genre. I will say Thin Lizzy has a few more songs with melodies I enjoy than the average 70s rocker. Southbound and Dancing in the Moonlight are enjoyable songs that I like a lot. Still, I was happy when the album, making it hard to give it more than a strong 2.
It was okay, had some really good songs. Yet again not my favourite but was still enjoyable.
proof that Van Halen needed to happen...i'm sorry but i just think 70s rock that doesn't aim for heavier sounds or more progressive arrangements falls into an almost preemptive sense of lame nostalgia...there's this sense they're aiming to capture the cool and sensuality of early rock n' roll and that more often than not just makes me feel sleepy...that being said i did develop an appreciation for the songcraft even if the sound itself never works for me 4/10
I really hoped I would like this better than I did. I did like the call out of Huey Lewis on the harmonica near the end though. Loved Boys Are Back In Town. I was just underwhelmed with the rest of their playlist. It was okay…just didn’t love it.
Interesting album. Good energy but not too interesting
Rippin late 70s rock. Not too much intrigue, but some fun vibes. I never knew they sounded so fun much like Springsteen. At least to me.
2.5/5
Loved the guitar and drums, not my favorite lyrics
mid
It's okay. In general, I'm not a big fan of most live albums and this is no exception. I don't see myself seeking this out one again.
A 4 track album considered one of the greatest live albums? Come on. Maybe if the tracks were 15 minute jams each. Nope. Total runtime 21 minutes.
I know it’s considered a classic live album, but I didn’t really enjoy it.
Eh, just drags on and doesn't really do anything interesting. Kinda glad I wasn't at this concert.
I liked this album, I have only ever really heard the boys are back in town, so cool to hear some other of his songs.
Uh, yeah, sure, ok.
One of the classic bands from the 70's here. Everyone knows the hits, but I really like Emerald. I dig the guitars. This album would be better if the singer didn't talk. He sounds like a chode. I like how, after the first song, he lets the ladies know that he is ready to party if they "want a bit more Irish in them." Really setting up his after concert experience early on in the set, smart. Then, towards the end of the set, he asks them, "Are you ready to rip it up? Are you ready to rock?" He's ready to get backstage and rip up some vagina, and he wants to make sure they are ready, too. This guy knows how to plan his evening. Oh, Huey Lewis on harmonica, nice!
This is OK. I don't love it, and I can't see myself going back for more, but it didn't offend me. It did feel pretty samey though, and there wasn't much to get excited about musically.
Phil: Do any of you girls want a little bit more Irish in you? Me: Vomits in mouth a bit
the album is decent and had pretty good energy all the way through! then it went on for another 30 minutes. 😔
Schade. Wertung: 🔦(🔦)/5
Another live album that I don't feel like deserves a place on the list. I feel like live albums tend to be big area rock bands and those just don't do much for me. 2.5/5
There is only 3 songs available on this live album on spotify, but that's okay, I hate listening to live albums and I can't believe how many are on this list. Listened to the live version of jailbreak and it sounds like a slowed version, just bad. Anyway, I'm going to listen to my Jailbreak album and call it good.
Southbound Cowboy Song The Boys Are Back In Town Sha-La-La Sounds fun and entertaining. Unfortunately there’s nothing here that catches my attention and makes me wanna put this album on again in the future
Snoozer
Good songs, but I’ve never been a fan of live albums
Easy to listen to and sounds pretty good for a live album. Apparently the entire album may have only been drums and audience from a live recoding and the rest was done in studio. So it's pretty much a best of album. Filled with sax solos and guitar solos galore.
Genuinely curious why this is here
One thing this project has taught me is that I’m not the only person who hates live albums. Thin Lizzy is the quintessential “70s rock band”. The kids on That ‘70s Show definitely listened to this in the basement. It borders on generic. Only this is a live album so there’s stupid banter, long boring drum solos, and muddy vocals. Yay!
The Boys are back in town' was. Nummers lopen heel erg in elkaar over. FAVO: Dancin in the moonlight, The boys are back in town
I’m straddling the fence. Love the hard rock and silly 70’s screaming guitar solos, but I can do without the machismo BS that was so typical of the later 70’s rock bands. Yeah, didn’t really like them then, have even less regard for them now.
An hour and seventeen minutes is too much Thin Lizzy.
I’m not a fan of recorded live music or of hard rock/metal. Obviously this album isn’t for me. But rock on, Thin Lizzy fans.
classico rock anni 80 forse un poco in anticipo con gli anni ma tutto lets go we are happy lets rule the world si figo assoli di chitarra ecc anche abbastanza moderno
I always struggle with this brand of rock, and I guess I can tell it’s good if you like the genre, but it’s just one single note the entire way through. The crowd pop as “Boys” begins is fun, as is the Bluesy Huey Lewis cameo.
Even after adjusting for the fact that this is not the type of music I normally gravitate towards this album feels disappointing. All the songs feel flat and over-processed (likely due to the overdubbing that happened after the live recordings) and this album does not have the energy I find most live albums do. The one exception to this is the version of The Boys Are Back In Town. This song feels energetic and fun, which sticks out on this record.
Why so many live albums
I can't stand live abums
This has got to be my least favorite genre of music. Not unlistenable, but it’s not creative and just boring.
I really liked the song where they
Fundamentally pretty boring 70s classic- straightforward arena filling pop rock with familiar chords, predictable structures, and melodies you've basically heard before. Good enough unchallenging music that certainly goes down easy. The only really good bit is how hard they lean into the gimmic of twin guitars harmonizing on the leads - yeah, it's corny as hell, but my god it rips. The sax stuff and new wave-sound tracks (dancing in the moonlight) are pretty fun too. Has there ever been a cover that more succinctly illustrates the idea of cock rock?
Never heard of Thin Lizzy. Unfortunately only a few songs from this album were available but I wasn't too fond of what I heard. Maybe an unfair rating but. 2 stars.
Good background music and that’s about the most I can say. They had a great crowd though!
Meh.
Nothing special
It was okay, but then it kept going and kept going.
Listening to this live album feels equivalent to those times when your friend pulls out their phone and shows a video of some concert they once went to and talk about how amazing it was. Honestly it sounded like a great show, but it's horribly grating to have to listen to an ~80min compilation of live Thin Lizzy songs. The only part that caught my attention was the transition from Cowboy Song into The Boys Are Back in Town, but even that is pretty common among live performances. Only a select few live albums come to mind that would be appropriate on this list, ones that stand uniquely on their own for one reason or another. Folsom Prison by JC, Nirvana MTV Unplugged, and Portishead at the Roseland This album is not trash by any means, but this should absolutely not be on this list. 1.5/5 -> 2/5.
No more live albums please
Not unlistenable but quite dull. Don't really understand why it's on this list. Couldn't finish it.
Awesome! Live AND double. Keep up the great work!
Man I love live albums 1.5
Good musicians. Talented bass player. Liked Rosalie.
Some great production but the album was cluttered and messy
I’ve never need a huge Thin Lizzy fan. They weren’t heavy enough to be heavy metal; not camp enough to be Yatch; not emotional enough to be soft. They were always kinda “mid” to me. This album shows the kind of powerhouse they were live, which sounds like a good party. Boys Are Back has always been a good song. However, among the titans of Classic Rock, even their live album comes off as, well, mid. If I wondered in to this concert I would enjoy the band and probably respectfully talk about them to friends if I remembered their name, and eager await the main act.
Nee
Not my cup of tea but I can appreciate that its influential.
I'm just not interested in live albums. Not sure why anyone would want to listen to a crumbier version of perfectly good studio music unless you were actually there. I'd prefer this song list as just a compilation of the album versions. The live music doesn't add anything, and strips off a lot of polish. Only giving this 2 because at least the songs are good.
The first bad live album on this list. Low 2.
Just another rock album? I tried liking it but thought it was just kinda boring.
Heinous live crap
na ja
Meh Got bored couldnt finish it
Well, the guitar fiddling was fun at some places but I'll be damned if I have to listen to 70 plus minutes generic '70s hard rock. LIVE RECORDINGS of generic '70s hard rock.
Not for me
Looks this is fine But its a live album and it's long It's enjoyable enough but most live albums have a cap at 3. I'll go high 2 on this
This is one of those things, on paper I should love it, but it just doesn’t do anything for me.
doesnt even sound like a live album and is far too long
Bastante sin más 💀
Live version has some good songs but definitely not one of the better albums from that era of bands
Live album bad. Although, I will say, this one had an infectious energy that I can’t hate. 2/5
Not memorable also pretty bad sound quality, some of the guitar was good tho
2.5/5
Didn't like it at all, old school rock, didn't age well
It's crazy how there are 100s of Christmas songs, but only one song about the boys being back in town.
2.5
I miss the real rock in the songs. Every song sounds a little bit boring.
It was okay.. now I know who sings boys are back in town
not all available on spotify :(
This was something
There is disagreement about the extent to which this is a 'live' album. Tony Visconti, the producer, has claimed that it is 75% recorded in the studio, but the band have denied this. To me, it sounds too clean to be a mostly live recording, so I believe Visconti. However, I also don't think it matters. More of an issue is that it's 76 minutes of mediocre 70s rock. Proficient but dull. The album should therefore have been called '(Probably not) Live and (certainly not) Dangerous'. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: The Boys Are Back In Town Date listened: 15/12/23
Feel like it wasn’t bad music but I didn’t like listening to it. The guitar and drum solos are sick but they bore me. Don’t think the listening experience of the album as an album is very good :/
It's a live album without any of the fun from the crowd. I think the overdubs really took away from what this could have been. I agree with a previous reviewer - it's like a flat beer.
I think I was listening to Spinal Tap. Pretty much a crap 70’s album.
It's ok. Not something I'll come back too.
Not a huge fan of live albums. Thin lizzy is cool, but I wasn’t drawn in.
Not a fan
Other than ‘The boys are back in town’ not many inspired songs on this ‘live album’. I use that term loosely as it was pointed out that this live recording had been dubbed and changed repeatedly from its OG performance. 2/5.
Not my favorite. I wish it was live, the energy might be better
First listen Saved 6/17 Top track: The Boys Are Back In Town
Songs that go in background when you do other things.
its fine i guess
I'm not sure why we needed a live Thin Lizzy album. Over an hour is much too long for this band of very samey songs. Look, I'm not against The Boys Are Back In Town, but a lot of their songs sound an awful lot like that one. Not sure if any of their studio albums are better - I don't intend to find out - but if this is the best way to introduce someone to Thin Lizzy, then - and I'm sure I'll say this many more times before this list is done - maybe we don't have to listen to it before we die.
Wasn't ever much of a TL fan. They do have some classics, but hearing them live didn't really change anything for me.
This feels definitively like a "rock" album, what someone out there thinks is the peak of the genre, despite sounding extrem safe and predictable by modern standards. All your usual suspects are here, guitar solos that really aren't that memorable, far too long drum solos, and of course a whole section introducing people in the band as if those listening to the album can see them. Is there stuff here that caught me by surprise? Sure, and of course songs like The Boys Are Back in Town have earned their place in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame, but there isn't enough here to stand out as one of the great live albums to me, and when I realize there are some blatant live picks over this one, I scratch my head even more. Not bad, just generic.
Not for me :(
meh
Surely a great album, just not what I enjoy listening to.
Standard 70’s rock that is done way better by other bands. I’d rather their studio album(s) be put here rather than an hour and a half live album.
I never really liked live albums so despite this having great songs, I didn't mesh with it too much. Additionally, while thin lizzy is a pretty famous band, I've never thought too much of them. It has some good songs and a good live album but ultimately meh when compared to other studio albums.
Mediocre
In a nutshell: Live and tame. Overall: 3/10
The boys are back in town... again!? 2/5
That was painful. I don't know if I didn't like it because it was live or because it just wasn't my jam. No tracks I'd save, I suppose 'Boys Are Back in Town' is iconic, but yeah I was not having a good time start to finish.
meh
i don't like this band. Not un-listenable but so 70s and not even sounding Irish.
Put me back in jail if it means I don't have to listen to this album anymore. Look, I like Thin Lizzy fine. I may even have a fond memory or two of playing their music on Guitar Hero, but I don't need a bloated live album of Thin Lizzy. No one does. And this album isn't even "live." It's a compilation of live shows overdubbed with studio fixes. Again, all fine and good, but this type of album does NOTHING to enhance the average listener's appreciation of the whole wide world of music. No reason to include it on this list.
Neither truly live or dangerous, Lizzy’s big night out is awful bloated for an artist purporting to be thin.
Anytime I hear Thin Lizzy on the radio, I change the station. I have none of their songs on my playlists. They seem like cheesy disposable 70's rock to me. That said, I didn't hate this album. Massacre is a really good song. Still not something I would listen to again.
I HATE this thin guitar tone.
old school 70s rock. boring.
I dont like classic rock like this quite boring
Yep, these guys know how to play instruments that's about all I can say it's pretty meh. I really don't like calling this a live album. RIP Phil Lynott, he was pretty cool.
Not much on Spotify
Doesn't really feel like an album to me, more like a compilation (at least the first half). The songs are mediocre, but I liked Dancing In The Moonlight, so there's that
listened to this across 2 days, could not remember a single thing from the previous day when I resumed the album. utmost unremarkable
1/1978 Springsteens idol
With cornball songs like "The Boys are Back in Town" they're about as dangerous as an overfed and declawed arthritic house cat.
BL: Thin Lizzie is not a band I’m particularly passionate about in any way. I remember being about 12 and performing “Jail Break” on stage in front of the rest of our theatre group. They didn’t think too much of it, I didn’t think too much of it. He wanted to learn it cos it was a piece for his grade 3 or 4 guitar I believe. Since that there’s been little to no listening of them from me. I can appreciate “whiskey in the jar” as a song but other than that I don’t think I’d really go out my way to listen to them. AL: there is not much I can say about the content of this album and yet so much around the context of this album. The music? Functional at best, mostly middle of the road music from a couple hit wonder 70s rock band. One track that stood out was “Massacre”, surprisingly good. However my main criticism of this album is it isn’t technically a live album. As a lot of it is overdubbed, not good enough to be a studio album but not a pure live album this stands as a unique but not provocative example of interference. The one thing I will say that’s evident from this is that Phil Lynott is very clearly an amazing frontman, having the crowd wrapped around his finger (unless the cheering is overdubbed too). Wouldn’t recommend a listen to this. Would maybe be better if it was a single album as opposed to a double. FT: “Massacre” 2/5
I only knew Thin Lizzy through the boys are back in town and even that song was totally underwhelming on this album. If you have to select the best performance from several shows AND still have to do overdubs you probably are not good enough a live band to release a live album. This lacks energy in every way, the songs are mediocre as well. Not horrible but will not play again.
Dull
This album has got to have been my biggest disappointment from the 1001 albums so far. Previously, I'd heard one song from this album: "The Boys are Back in Town." I heard it on the radio, but I'm thinking it was probably the studio version I heard. My dad told me it was Thin Lizzy, and I remember him saying: "this song is all about the riff" (I'm young- born this century- so a lot of the music on this list is more my dad's era). I agreed with him. The lyrics aren't that great, but the riff has stuck in my head ever since, after only hearing the song that one time (I never heard it again). However, I like my lyrics. It takes more than a good riff for me to like a song. Despite that, the first few tracks left me pleasantly surprised. The lyrics were a lot better, the musicianship was top notch, the energy and overall sound was really my vibe, and I was genuinely thinking this might turn out to be my first five star album so far. However, it only got worse from there. From those first few great songs, all of a sudden the quality of song writing just deteriorated, and I would even say most of the track list is terrible. By the end it was just hard to listen to. Favourite tracks: Emerald, Still In Love With You, Southbound
Mehh
Ugh
The boys are back in town to bore me comepletely
lol this isn't even a real live album, it's a bunch of live recordings with overdubs on top. almost every live album from the 70s that is mythologized is mostly held in that esteem because the very idea of live recordings of rock 'n' roll bands was revolutionary. and they're not bad. but "you must listen before you die"? GTFO with that, boomers.
Just can’t get into this style of classic rock
The album itself was ok, but it’s just not something I’d pick up and listen to. Ok background music though. Listen again: probably not Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: Still In Love With You Worst Song:
A couple of good tracks
Enough of the live albums cmon list
cap live album
A couple fun ones, but kinda bland and repetitive.
Oli lopulta ihan jees rockia, vaikka puolessa välissä meinasin tylsistyä. Bangerit olikin loppupuolella. Sanotaan 2,5/5.
Better than I expected
I had heard of Thin Lizzy and a couple of their songs but didn't know or remember much more. It's definitely 70s rock and sounds like it was fun. Not the band's fault at all, but because I grew up on this sound and have heard it for decades, and because I have for quite some time now listened to all sorts of music often with a lot of complexity to it, it's really hard for my ears to hear it as interesting. Just too many soundalikes out there. The band performs very well, so again, not a reflection of them. Just oversaturation to my listening ears.
This is an odd choice, the only album on the list by this band is a live recording, or rather a series of recorded concerts. If the original songs are not good enough to make the list how do live versions make them better. Thin Lizzy were a very good band, they found their sweet spot with the twin leads but it was all down to the charisma of Phil Lynott. This collection showcases how good they could be live. It would have been better to just record one concert and tinker with that rather than tinker with several - or better still leave it raw as concert goers experienced it.
I fucking hate live albums... It's ok. Would probably give this a 3 maybe a 4 if it was a studio album. That is the only thing keeping this thing from being a 1 2/5
I'm not a big fan. I do sometimes like this genre, but this one feels a bit less exciting than others
Oof, not sure about this. I can enjoy one or two Thin Lizzy songs as it goes, they're fun. But 17 in a row? No. For what is basically a best of compilation, I only recognised two songs I think. By the time the boys were back in town I'd spiritually gone home because I was bored. By Warriors, you can throw as many virtuosic guitar solos at me as you want, because I've mentally checked out completely. Checks - 5 songs left. Ok, we can do this. Songs that broke the mold and so I enjoyed: Massacre, Emerald.
Honestly, why are live albums in the book? Most of them don't bring anything new to the table.
A live album. Joy. Decent-enough tracks, clearly a talented outfit, but not something I'd get excited by and an immediate 1 star review by virtue of being a live album. Maybe 2 for not being painful?
Live albums are hard to appreciate, and this is no exception to that. The album seems like they had a good time, the crowd seemed like they had a good time, but that is just it. The listener of this live album, did not have a good time. Expectations were already low, and perhaps a little bias is here in that this album had been touted as one of the best live albums to ever be produced. The metrics used to determine that are unknown, but from a listeners' perspective, the album was just a live album. Did this impact the way live albums were produced going forward? No indicators there. Is Thin Lizzy culturally relevant at the time? Yes, and this album was produced at their peak. Recognizable hits like "The Boys Are Back In Town" sounded better on their respective albums, the nostalgic trip was a little too familiar. Live albums should (as a matter of opinion) convey a little more of the heart and soul of a band's catalog that is hidden from a studio production. Not so much of that was here, exceptions being crowd engagement in between songs. Maybe that is what a live album is, but in the year of our Lord, 2023, the expectation that this was an arguably great live album is no longer met.
I said no live albums. Especially not this one. It’s sloppy.
Solid, no problems with it but likely wont return
Seth MacFarlane is a borderline 21st century genius. Peter Griffin is up there with Frank Costanza as one of the greatest of comic characters. Where am I going with this? We have a nice little riff going in our house where upon hearing a particular type of song, we nominate it as a Peter Griffin type song, one that he'd funk out to with Cleveland etc. Listening to this took me to Kiss Alive and Rock and Roll Allnite, comfy bedfellows the Lizz and the boys in face paint, and they are purveyors of Peter Griffin type rocking out madness par excellence. Here we are post Cream/Yes/Deep Purple et al and the riffing in unison style of stuff (much beloved by Spinal Tap) but pre hair metal and all that palaver. The thing with these bands is that they could play, were tight, well rehearsed and had played in every gin joint and bar she'd ever avoided walking into. Clearly this record shows that a gig with Phil and boys was always going to be a good night out, even if towards the end you started hanging out at the bar, going the chat with the one with the nice blue eye shadow and Farrah Fawcett hair. What's the problem then pop fans? Firstly no good songs bar Jailbreak, their cover of Rosalie and of course The Boys Are Back. They were limited songwriters period. Secondly, they clearly got stuck in with a particular sound and arrangements and just could not bust out, or didn't have the ability to bust out.
Basic. Inauthentic. Shit.
A relatively solid 90 minutes of exactly what you'd expect from a Thin Lizzy live(ish) album. I was going to give it a respectable 3, but there's a drum solo towards the end that is phased to shit and made me genuinely upset
super mid
An hour of listening to 70s dorky rock. No thanks
Wasn't terrible, Wasn't great. When I think of iconic live albums though Thin Lizzy just doesn't come to mind.
Nothing special here. Average classic rock. Not really sure why this has a spot on this list. There were many bands that sounded just like this. Not bad, but not great.
THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN 2/5 not bad
Not that much into this kind of music, wouldve liked it better if it wasnt live I think
3/17, 18%
The title is dumb, the cover shot moronic and the music still not exactly genius in contrast. It's not hard to hear how the '80s made this bunch extinct. The vocals are good enough to wonder how effective he might have been in another context. The big bank-y, coruscating guitars sound cool but seem wasted in the service of utter rock cliches. There might not be a more quintessential '70s sound than these guys and I don't mean that in a good way. Also, way points off for overdubbing parts.
This wasn't a great live album. I like Thin Lizzy but I didn't enjoy this.
Meh.
Love thin lizzy but the pack of Gary Moore on this album and the fact that it's live pull it down for me
Way too much Thin Lizzy...and I actually like Thin Lizzy. Would have been better just including a studio album. 1.5/5
not a bad live album in whole, but just TOO MUCH THIN LIZZY
Absolutely nothing wrong with this album but I really couldnt get into it
I can appreciate some of it but I think I’m missing something having never heard them before and now only listening to their Live sound. Feels a little too long. Favorite: The Boys Are Back in Town
Long and live. Not really a fan of live records.
At this point in life I don't care for hard rock except for the bands or songs I already like. As for this album, I like The Boys Are Back in Town and that's about it.
If you want to be in that crowd, then live can swallow you and flood you with the vibe. If you are just listening to learn, it is hard to get into that groove.
A proper rock band, just not my thing.
A live album gives the opportunity for a band to create a larger-than-life experience, an LP that conveys the excitement of the crowd and experimentation of the band on playback. Kind of hard to excel at that when you play the tracks straight off their respective LPs with no flair and the crowd can't be bothered to clap/respond in time with the music.
I need a lot more from a live album. I don't love the source material and it wasn't enriched by the mediocre live recording.
I was thinking to myself that this album sounds very well produced for a live album, but according to Wikipedia there is some controversy surrounding the use of overdubs on the record, which would explain that. Overall I think it's a decent album, Thin Lizzy had some good songs and their energy is captured well here. I don't really think it's notably different enough from any other live albums to vault it into a "best of all time" list though. Beyond a couple extended guitar solos there aren't any crazy long jams or deviations from their original material, to me it feels like a worse-quality studio album. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing, but not what I personally want in a live album, so points docked for that. Fav Tracks: Jailbreak, Dancing in the Moonlight, Still in Love with You
The name of the record and the cover shot are ridiculous -- could not be more so. It's easy to see why this dinosaur disappeared from the earth not tool long after this.
2/5 Nice on the ear, Hendrixesque. Very predictable and songs began to blur into each other near the end. Not horrible but not necessarily amazing. Overall ok. Standout tracks - Massacre, Emerald
I really dislike "live" albums. They never properly capture the gig experience but sound way crappier than a studio album.
2.5
Nah, live albums are never any good
Meh
If the middle of the road is dangerous then I guess this is dangerous. Couple of decent moments but if your going to do a live album at least do it from one gig and don't cherry pick from multiple. 2/5
Average rock. Not bad, but doesn't excite me at all.
Ehh. Okay live album. Not great. Not bad.
Live albums are still the absolute worst.
Its ok. 2/5
Read the wiki - this album was made in lieu of a new studio album. Some of the album has been overdubbed with studio recording as well, which was a little controversial among critics, but overall it's still high on many lists of best live albums. I wanted to appreciate it more, but I honestly didn't love it. They sounded great, technically, but I didn't enjoy it on a personal level. I won't stop giving all different genres of metal a try, though.
Hello *checks notes* Springfield! who here hates *checks notes* Shelbyville? live albums aren't for casuals, you only listen to live albums if you've already commited to liking the band. however hats off to phil for this line: is there anyone here with any irish in them? wooo! are there any girls here who'd like a little more irish in them? woo!
It was good and energetic, but I always have a problem with live albums. No matter the production, the vocal performances are always lacking or pack a lot of “pop” from the microphones.
Couple good tracks
Hard rock isn't really my thing at all so this doesn't do a ton for me but I will say that I found it less unpleasant than I expected. The joke about asking if girls want a little Irish in them was gross though.
Awful sound quality. Shocked to learn Huey Lewis playing harmonica at one show. Standouts include Southbound, Jailbreak, Still in love with you, and The Rocker.
Minus a star for it being live. It was probably super fun in person but it never translates well to an album, to me.
Live and Dangerous by Thin Lizzy (1978) As live albums go, this one is very good, but it’s still a live album, which means, for hard rock, it’s not very good. Importuning chatter with the audience, lame verbal song introductions, even lamer band member introductions, off-tempo handclaps, applause interruptions in the quiet moments, lowbrow yelling, artificial endings, etc., etc.—all this takes away from the music. Technically, it is generally well recorded (for a live album) but there are many weak spots, including, for example, a far too subdued saxophone solo by John Earle on “Dancing In the Moonlight” and harmonica solo by Huey Lewis (yes!) on “Baby Drives Me Crazy”. What a waste of electrons. Thin Lizzy gives powerful performances, tight and experienced. God, these guys rock! Lead vocals by Phil Lynott are strong but lacking variety in his melodies and stylings. (Why do the lead solo parts all sound like “The Boys Are Back In Town”?) Bass (Lynott) and drums (Brian Downey) are outstanding. Guitar performances (Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham) are top-notch professional (especially in tandem!), even if they sometimes sound like they were recorded with microphones placed here in the listener’s living room, while the guys were playing in the high school gymnasium next door. The live version of “The Boys Are Back in Town” is far, far inferior to the studio version. Dud. Brian Downey’s superb drum solo on “Sha-La-La” (with fantastic slow phase shifting) is superbly screwed up by a hand-clapping audience that gets lost on the tempo change. Everybody laughs and has a good time, but I’m steaming. The point of this criticism is that nowadays, with streaming, the listener can put a collection of tracks together as a playlist of readily available studio versions. Why even listen to a tax-minimizing product (They admit it!) that amounts to a not-so-greatest hits compilation? The takeaway emotion here is regret either (1) that I wasn’t listening to the studio recordings, or (2) that I wasn’t at the concerts. Maybe there should be a list of “1001 Concerts You Should Have Attended But Didn’t—Now Go Die!” 2/5
For the songs I could access off Spotify, they were good. I didn't listen to the rest, as it's just a generic live album with songs off other studio albums.
Might have been better if they weren’t all live...
Pretty generic hard rock.not sure what the fuss is about on this 2 🌟
Play Whiskey in the Jar!
Nirvana: Unplugged should be the only live album on here
Thin Lizzy is the epitome of a bog standard rock band. There isn't a whit of imagination or innovation in the song structures, melodies, bass lines, riffs, guitar solos, or for that matter anywhere throughout the running time of Live And Dangerous. Nada, nothing, zilch. That said, they are a rock solid touring band. It turns out that in a live setting, Thin Lizzy displays an energy and frontman Phil Linott a charisma which is nonexistent on their studio recordings. 67 minutes is a long time to listen to boring, by the numbers rock 'n roll, but thanks to Thin Lizzy's surefootedness as a touring band, it passes by relatively painlessly. Seriously though, this belongs on ANY kind of list?
Decent, not my style.
TBH, will never revisit, though I hear more Hendrix in here than I'd ever like to give the band credit.
Usually I like hard rock albums, but that was different.
Not sure what this being live does to make the album better. There's not an extra energy that the lead singer seems to bring; in fact he doesn't really sound excited at all. Apparently, it also isn't even all live, as the sound has been "cleaned up," which I don't understand. Again, what's the point of this being live?
An album to respect but hard to admire. The band are clearly talented musicians but I didn’t feel a spark with these songs - which feels especially strange for a supposed live album. Almost too polished - not quite rough enough. There are better examples of their style of hard rock...
I guess this could be just the right album for a really specific moment where I'm driving a convertible Trans-Am and reliving a scene from Dazed and Confused, but most of the time, it's not what I want to listen to.
Was surprised to see a live album on here, I can see why it has made it onto the list. Was very long though and I didn't really get into it
love the way he pronounce tonight, actually love his accent in general. they sound Amazing live
All fine and well but I'm unlikely to inscribe my pencil case with the logo
Not even a small album
Live album not really doing anything for me, not exactly the most rocking tunes ever either
Still in Love with You“ mein Herz in Flammen setzt. Leon Goretzka gibt 2.2
Oh boy, another live album. I would’ve loved an actual Thin Lizzy project. The irony here is that the songs I love (“Jailbreak” and “The Boys are Back in Town”) aren’t the ones I liked on this because I just prefer the studio version. A couple tracks I did enjoy, that I hadn’t heard before, but as a matter of principle I can’t give this a high rating. Live albums are a paradox, and, with few exceptions, I don’t think they should exist. Favorite tracks: Still in Love With You, Sha-La-La. Album art: Ooooh a picture of the band performing live! I wonder what it sounds like? 2.5/5
every song sounds the same
These are fun songs, but I generally find live albums kind of lame and this is no exception. By the end I was thoroughly bored of it. Feels more like a "fan favorite" for hardcore Thin Lizzy fans than a true classic to me.
I neither enjoyed nor didn't enjoy this. It was just sort of there, doing it's thing, not really garnering much attention from me. I know these songs, they do nothing for me.
Just not a big fan of Thin Lizzy. May have had too much from "The Dock"
201. ok
Whatever
