So here we have to put up with Morressy, and it's a boring Smiths record? There are no hooks here. It's just waves of reverb and whiney bullshit. Which sucks. Because I normally LOVE whiney bullshit. Fuck Morressy.
Not my cup of tea
First impressions without listening, oh well suppose I have to, at least it's only 37 mins. I do try to keep an open mind but morrisey's voice which I can only describe as multi-tonal monotony is not for me. That said Cemerty Gates wasn't bad and does raise it up to a very low 2.
The hits are remarkable as the rest stays underwhelming.
Not a fan of the Smiths but can agree on this being an important album.
so im on the first track and im trying to figure out if i like the song so far i think the main thing that im into is the bass and drums the guitar is pretty cool too actually its his voice i really find it off putting and unsuiting to the music for some reason this instrumental outro to the queen is dead is awesome frankly mr shankly was extremely forgettable despite the rhyme ive listened to i know its over before and have always thought it was pretty good and i sort of expected the album to follow the style of this track more which might be the case for the rest of the album the space for the bass in the verses is really cool too another pretty awesome track never had no one ever really relaxing and sad and his voice wasnt as annoying as when i first heard it this next song on the other hand has just brought me back to disliking it i dont know how he does it this is going to be such a tough album to rate because the music is definitely the sort of thing im into the bass jumping all over the place the guitar parts seem fairly intricate and interesting and the drummer sounds like theyre having a decent time and im sure morrissey is technically a good singer but not my style at all ill stop talking about it until something more notable happens oh yeah that line i have always hated so much for some reason the pleasure the privilege is mine part it makes me physically uncomfortable and i want to avoid it as much as i can and again the music is cool and interesting but i dont like many of the songs as full pieces of work this would probably be a 4/5 star instrumental album but he does manage to bring it down to a 2 for me the lyrics overall have generally been quite poor and this last song does emphasise the point enough for me to believe there is something to what i am saying
I should like the smiths, I’ve tried. I’m just not there yet
Didn't really work for me, feel like you have to be in the right mood to sink into this one.
Not my cup of tea
It was alright, not my favorite
Strange
Not for me
This has been the most frustrating album for me so far. Musically and lyrics are fantastic, very touching and Marr real shines in this. But I cannot stand Morrissey, his singing sound pretentious, hammy and over the top. Most of the album is a 3-5 but the vocals drags the whole album down. All I can say at least there is no "charming man" or my personal hate of "heaven knows I'm miserable now"
Meh.
???
Ok!
I was not impressed by this. I was hoping for a lot of different sounds and things I haven't heard before. How Soon Is Now is one of my favorite songs ever because it's so unique. Nothing on this album was really any different than any other alternative/new age 80s pop.
I am prejudiced, as I have decided I dont like the maudlin Smiths. I force myself to listen to their most popualr track, from the album. Its called "there is a light that never goes out" ... it would be cliche to say their mission seems to be to extinguish said light. There, I did it, without meaning- a Smiths joke. I feel like I ate too much. Which is have. I also find so little pelasure in their music...
Boring, try hard artsy
Ik heb dit album altijd geskipt omdat ik bang was dat ik het leuk zou vinden. Nu toch geluisterd en gelukkig is het niet zo. Fuck morrissey
The major third gets old but fairly interesting and cool mood
Did not love
Personally not a fan of British punk. His voice got a bit on my nerves. I’m sure this album is great for people who are into that genre.
Decent, sounded like a cat dying st times.
Not a fan of Morrissey, not digging his (whining) voice. Musically a solid album tho, with some good tracks. 'Bigmouth Strikes Again'. 2,5/5
Interesting concepts…liked some things but nothing incredible
Seemingly sounds like the point where Morrissey's crooning ego began to outweigh Marr's indie creative genius - too much self-indulgence and not enough jangly riffage. Even with your rosetinted nostalgia glasses on, it's hard to listen to the gladioli-waving toss pot given his descent into populist clickbait.
This was recommended the day after Queen Elizabeth II died.
Kinda boring, not really my thing.
It was okay. Found myself struggling to give it my full attention to get through the full album. Some tracks I'd probably rate higher independently but as an album it wasn't doing it for me.
Its the smiths...meh
Full disclosure: I've always hated Morrissey. His voice, his stage persona... I hated him before he became a weird British Nationalist and it was fashionable to hate him. He is, as the classic Viz article so perfectly put it, a twat. And because bands tend to be overshadowed by the primacy of their singers (thanks, 1942-1944 musicians' strike!), I've always avoided The Smiths. So imagine how gutted I was to find that in amongst the pretentious delivery, the tedious songwriting that makes a 3 minute song feel like 6, and Morrissey's godawful yawning voice... not only is there some really interesting arrangement and production work, but some of Morrissey's lyrics aren't actually that bad. "I Know It's Over," for example, is excellent. And Johnny Marr's guitar work on "Bigmouth Strikes Again" was another standout. "Cemetery Gates," however, is reassuringly awful. And "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," made me want to put my foot through the computer screen and send Spotify the bill. So I'm glad I've finally listened to some Smiths, and have a little more idea of what the appeal is. But I hope I never have to hear any of this wank again.
No, no...absolutely not a fan. I don't get it, I was a fan of all of this music growing up, but I found this one boring and unimaginative. The band sounded disjointed and Morrissey was out of key on a couple of tracks. I'm giving it a two based on Frankly, Mr. Shankly alone.
Just not my style
Did not like, not my style
Love Marr's guitar in The Queen is Dead. Bummer that I listened to it on the day that QE2 passed.
Wow, this was a little on the nose for my listening list for September 9, 2022! Overall, this was a decent enough album. Outside of “There is a Light That Never Goes Out”, the songs here have an emo-like blasé about them that maybe I can’t identify with nearly 40 years later. For whatever reason, I didn’t love this Smiths offering as much as I really wanted to. That said, I’m happy to have heard this album and would welcome another chance to try more Smiths albums if they popped up.
Morrissey's voice gets pretty hard to listen to after a while. Plus he can go fuck himself.
Did not care for the voice style.
Is this the most overrated album of all time? Rolling Stone puts it in top 200. 5/5 on many review sites/magazines, NME named it best album of all time in 2013. I'm not saying this is a bad album, it's just...mid at best. Morrissey's vocals are unique but a few songs in and I'm over it. So much moaning. So much repetition. There was definitely a stride from "Cemetary Gates" to "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side" where was thinking this is really good, but overall I'm just not that impressed.
nah
The day after the queen dies this is what I get...
I'm not a Smiths fan, but glad I gave this album a go. I didn't mind it, but I won't be going back to it
Not really my sound
Tricky. I really don't like Morrissey. His voice grates. It's ok on uptempo tracks but is unlistenable on slower ones. But then I like the Smiths musically. Maybe I can just say I like Johnny Marr.
Meh…
Why do people like The Smiths so much. I just find their music so inexorably dull. Awful stuff.
p560, 1986. 2 stars Jangly 80s guitar music for lonely pasty faced Mancs in long overcoats whilst standing on damp street corners in the rain, waiting in vain for someone to notice them. Everyone has a musical blind spot, an artist or band that everyone loves and which you just don't like. The Smiths are my blind spot. I don't like Morrisey's whinging whine of a voice, and too many of their songs sound the same. 2 stars for the couple of songs that sound different from the others and for Johnny Marr's guitar work.
La musique est pas particulièrement mauvaise, quelques pièces que l'instrumentation était vraiment bonne, mais vraiment pas un fan de The Smiths, particulièrement la voix de Morrissey.
Kind of cute recommending it the day the queen died. But mediocre album, just not that exciting.
the queen….is dead..is this a joke. big smiths fan but they have better albums
I liked this better than I thought I might....typically not a fan of whiney British punk
Not for me.
Niente, gli Smiths non riesco proprio a farmeli piacere, nonostante ne riconosca l'importanza.
I tried but just can't do it
Lol what a coincidence!! The queen is dead! Decent album but the smiths just annoy the hell out of me for some reason. So overrated in my opinion. Giving it a 2 cause there is definitely worse music on this list
Ironic…
I just can’t listen to Morrisey whine any longer!
She is indeed dead. Favorite track: The Queen is Dead
Can't believe I'm rating a Smith's album this low
Mediocre rock
Not my thing.
A deliberate choice by he 1001 albums project to send out this album today, 9 Sept 2022, on the news of Liz II's demise? Maybe. This is tough. While not a massive fan of the Smiths in the 1980s, I have come to appreciate Johnny Marr's playing (especially) and the dry wit of the lyrics, which stop the songs from being _too_ maudlin. The clever humour throughout, and especially when paired with the surprisingly muscular musicianship, makes this a classic album. I think the title track, Bigmouth Strikes Again and There is a Light That Never Goes Out are all classic songs, and the rest of the album is very strong. But. And this is a big 'but'... Morrissey's increasing and unapologetic racism and right-wing politics make this unpalatable for me. I just can't get the bad taste out of my mouth when I hear Morrissey. His words and actions after the Smiths have sullied and tarnished the Smiths' legacy. To quote Billy Bragg: “whenever a Smiths track comes up I flip on … I just can’t … I love Johnny Marr, he’s the nicest man I ever met in pop music. So I really feel for him that the great work that he’s done should be tainted in this way.” (https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/may/30/bigmouth-strikes-again-morrissey-songs-loneliness-shyness-misfits-far-right-party-tonight-show-jimmy-fallon). So, I recognise how great this record is, but it just leaves me feeling uncomfortable and slightly dirty listening to it. Sorry Moz, you stuffed it up for me. 5 stars for Johnny Marr, minus a bunch for Morrissey being an abhorrent racist.
This was probably hugely influential, but I can't stand Morrissey.
This record doesnt sound bad by any means. It sounds like its on the verge of a great breakthrough but it just never comes. Maybe I'll have to try a later smiths album to see if they put it all together but this just didnt sound full to me. I was just missing something. Some good songs on here though. RIP Elizabeth 4/10
Nah
Was this a coincidence on the album choice?? Maybe they should have played Sex Pistols, God save the queen, the day before this?? Smiths is one of those bands I was never able to get into their vibe. I did like a few songs like the Queen is dead, Big mouth strikes again and there is a light that never goes out. There were a few songs I was thinking WTF, like some girls are bigger than others. Thought it was just kinda, meh. 2
No
Very oddly specific timing for this album... I didn't really like it that much, and these Monday reviews are tough because my memory of the experience is usually gone. Suffice to say, it wasn't memorable other than the timing.
I just don't like the Smiths (or Morrissey) at all. Too annoyingly whiny for me. I didn't hate this, but I definitely will not listen again.
I really like The Smiths but this album is cutesy Smiths. The sound is there but the snarkiness of the song isn't all the appealing. So much better material from his band.
It should work, it just doesn’t. It sounds like repetitive whining.
I really didn't care for the vocalist -- his voice just hit my ears wrong and his style made every song sound the same even when the music was clearly different
The Queen Is Dead and so is this album. I would have been more entertained looking at a dead queen than listening to this.
and so is this album
I can’t understand their popularity and why Morrissey is so lauded ! The album sounded the same pretty much all the way through ; monotonous melody with words. I’m voting a harsh 2*
Gallows humour with this, whether on purpose or randomly selected on this date. A couple of great songs but not enough to make me want to give it a second listen.
I thought this album was a little boring and the songs blended together and there's to little distinction between them.
Boring guitar and a less than pleasing voice equals meh
very whiney gutiar is good. comes up day the queen died pretty weird.
Not my jam at all. Singer is offtune, lyrics are weird
Not my cup of tea
Nah
Not my style
Do not like the vocalist
A handfull of decent songs but mainly just a drone tone of a album with no “umph” at all but just long droning vocals with half decent background music
The Queen Is Dead, well, given the events of yesterday the whole album is of poor taste, but it was ok, probably wouldn’t listen to it again, it was a bit too long. Frankly, Mr. Shankly is not what I expected stylistically, it has a fun bounce to it, and it doesn’t drag on like TQID did, wouldn’t choose to listen to, but didn’t dislike it and wouldn’t skip it if it came on. I Know It’s Over was ok, nothing great, nothing awful. Never Had No One Ever is just a bit dreary, nothing blows me away. Cemetery Gates is again ok, nothing much to comment on. Bigmouth Strikes Again was a bit boring. The Boy With The Thorn In His Side was listenable, wasn’t a fan though. Vicar In A Tutu never interested me that much, it came and went, and I do not care if I don’t hear it again. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out is on, the instruments are fine, just don’t really care to much. Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others might be my favourite on the album, but it still isn’t great. Honestly, the whole album was a snooze-fest, Morrissey’s vocals weren’t my favourite, and nothing in the album excited me. 2/5
Not good
I can’t handle Morrissey. Vocals are so far forward in the mix that it feels self-indulgent.
Got this album the day after the queen died. Cool. Hated the album though. 2/5
Ok
Meh
2/5 Nothing really exciting about the album IMO. It was ok but nothing crazy.
The music is so so good and the Smiths were obviously so so talented but I just can’t rate this high because Morrissey is such an atrocious human being. Sad.
It's the Smiths. Whoopie.
I have never really listened to The Smiths, I find Morrissey to be utterly insufferable. I have heard a number of their songs covered by other artists. This album has some jams, and I'm done with it and don't want to listen to it again.
Got this recommended on the day the queen died. Poor taste
Without being superfluous, "Never Had No One Ever" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. UPDATE, OK, we have a new contender with "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out". The rest of the album, well, it started off better than Meat is Murder, but nosedived pretty quickly after that. A reluctant 2 stars, for the clearly evident attempts at musical variety, and deviation from standard pop formulas. No standout songs though.
How apt. I'm not too much of a fan of The Smiths, mainly because of the vocals. Unsurprisingly this didn't do much to change my opinion.
Ok fine. 2 stars, "Light that Never Goes Out" is fine. F Morrissey.
ficcante allegro
Chamou mais atenção porque a rainha da Inglaterra realmente está morta. Reconheci alguns hits dos 80, só que mais uma vez confirma que pós -punk num é pra mim.
I got this album the day the queen of England died, which is fine cause I have no strong feeling towards that woman, I just thought it was funny. Two stars
First of all, ba-dum-tsch, funny. Second, I'm getting really sick of all these Morrissey albums that are throwing off my Spotify algorithm. The drums on the title track are good, but the rest of the album is standard Morrissey namby-pamby fare. Blah.
It’s nice that they saved this album for this one particular day when it's accurate, but it still reeks of Morrissey.
Didn't listen tbh
Arvioni tästä levystä on väistämättä tavallistakin subjektiivisempi, sillä sen äänimaailma edustaa minulle vastustajaa: The Smiths on paras symboli sille kehitykselle, jonka ajan henki kulki punkin jälkeen rock'n'rollista ns. indie-musiikkiin. Siinä missä blues-pohjaisille genreille (mukaan lukien punk) on ominaista piilottaa melodiat yksinkertaisen ja naiivin muodon alle - mikä edellyttää kuulijalta kykyä löytää musiikin sävyt ja samalla luo tarpeellisen jännitteen koukun syntymiselle - The Smithsillä melodisuus toimii jo jatkuvana virtana, johon yksittäisten säkeiden itsensä iskevyys uhkaa alati hukkua. On oireellista, että jopa tämän levyn tarttuvimmissa kappaleissa, kuten "Bigmouth Strikes Again" ja "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out", fokus on biisinkirjoituksen sijaan tuotetun äänen miellyttävyydessä. Ja ihmiset sanovat että punk-bändien biisit kuulostavat kaikki samalta...
def not their best, mediocre at best 🙁😐 - tested positive for covid 💀💀 feeling fine as of right now, just a runny nose and some v powerful sneezes … today i spent the day watching some halloween movies off my halloweenie letterboxd list (it’s the great pumpkin charlie brown, trick r treat, practical magic,) knitting a wash cloth, drinking obscene amounts of water, and laying in bed. it’s been a good day :) it’s been nice to just do nothing
09/09/2022 The Smiths feel like a band that only 13/14 year olds like, and I’m so glad that my 13 y/o self never had a devout smiths phase bc holy shit only teenagers and pretentious fucks must be able to listen to Morrissey all the way through and genuinely enjoy it. He sounds like he swallowed a toad and its farts come out through morrissey’s mouth when he sings. What a wanker I know it’s over is a bop though — ‘Twas a good Friday :) studio was really productive today and I can feel my group getting closer and wanting to hang out more. Hopefully we’ll all hang out more in the future. Heading to San Antonio tonight.
The list of Smiths songs I like begins and ends with "How Soon Is Now?" Otherwise, they've never appealed to me, so went into this album with an open mind and and the hope that I was wrong about them. Turns out I wasn't, really. "How Soon Is Now?" aside, I seem to prefer uptempo Smiths, so "Vicar in a Tutu" and "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" were okay. But "Uptempo Smiths" seems to be a rare creature, and I'm not sure what to do with the rest of the album. Am I supposed to be taking lyrics like "And if a ten-ton truck kills the both of us..." seriously, or is there a comedic layer to it? I have no idea, but it it's the former then wow, dude, melodramatic much? I think it just boils down to the fact that I don't like Morrissey much. I don't think of him or the Smiths as goth, but he's definitely got that South Park goth kid gloomy navel-gazing vibe. I feel like he'd be exhausting to hang around. Find an antidepressant that works for you and buck up, my friend.
Man I hate the smiths. The only reason I’m giving this album 2 stars is bc I’m not an idiot and recognize their talent. But for fucks sake their music is so whiney and boring
Never been a fan of The Smiths
I can't abide The Smiths or Morrissey, I recognise that TQID has moments where it's clearly good but it bores and annoys me, it's not my type of stuff anyway but really rubs me up the wrong way for a bunch of Morrissey-related reasons. 2/5, not enjoyable.
C’est pas franchement mauvais, mais ce n’est certainnement pas le plus grand band de l’histoire. Je m’attendais à beaucoup plus du band qui porte ce titre plus tant de gens.
I liked Meat is Murder more. Not interested in anything on this album if I'm honest.
Had moments of OKness but was overall unengaging
I haven't heard of the Smiths before today. I really really dislike the 80s haunted hollow sounding vocals. The music was eh ok, just not my thing.
For some reason I just don’t enjoy this kind of stuff. It’s not really bad to me, but just not fun to listen to.
I feel like Danzig and Morrissey are long lost twins, where one is a total whiny pussy and the other one fucking kicks ass. OK Danzig is kind of a whiny pussy too but at least he croons to metal.
My feelings about The Smiths have changed over the course of this project. From apathy to dislike to disdain. Much of that downward progression can be attributed to Morrissey. He's such a vapid, pretentious ass. Listening to him whinge on and on about himself for a whole album leaves me filled with hatred and loathing. He's just the worst.
Not really my thing.
Okay I guess.
Enjoyed but found some songs sounded similar to each other
Took me 3 tries to get through this and it's not even a long album. I find it painful to listen to. It's so whiney.
The Smithsiä, mitä muuta voi sanoa. Monotonista masismusaa, vaikka myönnettäköön että oli mukana pari biisiä joita kuunnellessa ei tehnyt mieli vetää ranteita ihan täysin auki.
first half was decent
Actually really like “Queen is Dead”, the pace, the tone and the criticisms in the lyrics. Reminds me of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” by Bauhaus in sound. However it doesn’t feel particularly strong as the introductive song and nothing that follows really even matches this. Don’t like the slurred vocals. Sounds like every song is being sung by a drunkard at karaoke. This is only made worse as the songs become slowed down and more depressive. However I can see the influence this album would have had on some people, some of the lyrics are very interesting. Such a shame Morrissey is an absolute hypocrite with zero self awareness.
Some interesting production tricks and solid chorus-tinged guitar tone, but not enough variation from song to song to leave any lasting impression. Also Morrissey is a piece of shit.
Good album
sucks lmao
Second Listen. I enjoy some of the songs. Stand out tracks: I Know it's Over. Bigmouth Strikes Again, The Boy with The Thorn in His Side.
Ei antanut oikeastaan yhtään mitään. Pari skippasin ku kävi tylsäks. Usein varsinkin laulu nimenomaan oli plääh
Tråkigt
Not very remarkable, weird lyrics "some girls are bigger than others". Personally not interesting.
First Listen. Morrissey's voice: good or annoying. Couple good songs. Need to hear more. 2/5.
some entertaining songs and some interesting ones but overall not my thing
Kinda overrated imo. I would go as far as to say this is the weakest Smiths album.
Quiero que me gusten los Smiths, de verdad. Pero nunca he podido.
I've always kinda liked a few songs by The Smiths (Boy with the thorn..., girlfriend in a coma, there is a light...) but this is the first time I've listened to this album. The two big hitters here are still the better tracks, but I've now resigned to the fact that I just don't enjoy Morrissey's style of singing - his Kermit the Frog tone, and his way of SPLAT-ing his voice onto a note just to the side of a more melodic one. The latter made a lot of the songs sound like he was just trialling his lyrics in a first sing through kinda way. Anyway, just okay to me. Don't quite understand the hype around this band, but I'm no longer gonna worry about "getting" them. 2.5/5
Never really listened to the Smiths, now i see why... that was pretty boring. 80's british pop pretty much.
I gave Morrissey a chance. And in doing so, at times during this record, I thought his voice worked - it fits the music and creates something cohesive, if not quite my bag. Other times I felt like it was just too much, not really fitting with the track, and sometimes just overwhelming the instrumentation. Where it works - "Cemetry Gates," "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side," "There is a Light That Never Goes Out." Where it doesn't - "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" and "Vicar With a Tutu" to great extent, and everywhere else a bit? After three tracks I liked the Smiths less than I had before listening to this album. (Only had heard some singles.) After the full album I liked them a little bit more than before beginning. So I don't know where I'm at. I would really like to look up some covers of some of these songs, to hear what they are like without Morrissey's vocal indulgences. Sometimes voices "work" in interesting places/arrangements. Morrissey's voice fits very well with the vibe and instrumentation of "There is a Light That Never Goes Out," though I don't really like the song. As I write this while listening to "Siamese Dream," I can only think about how Billy Corgan has a unique voice that probably wouldn't work in a lot of arrangements? Yet I think it weirdly fits amazingly well with the Smashing Pumpkins' sound. Morrissey's voice just doesn't always meld in that same magical way with the Smith's sound so that vocals and instrumentals elevate each other.
My dislike of the Morrissey’s voice knocks this album down 1 star. In the song The Queen Is Dead, a character he wrote self-deprecatingly agrees, "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing" If there were a strong lead singer instead, maybe it’s a 2 star drop. Unfortunate because I like the music.
Siento que me va a gustar, increiblemente nunca escuche The Smiths. Bueno no fue muy acertado mi pronostico de que me podia gustar. Es bastante repetitivo y abajo. Nose porque crei que la musica seria mas arriba.
Only just listenable, highly repetitive, singer has droning flat voice. Really did not enjoy. I was excited when the Smiths came up, as a band I knew of by reputation only and am familiar with some of Johnny Marr's other works but was super disappointed by this album.
loool no why ok fine
This album came out in my second year of uni and it certainly was a huge hit in the American (and I would imagine at least European if not elsewhere) university set (yes, I'm generalizing, but that was my experience). Heard it at nearly every gathering for about a year. I liked it, I think I bought it (can't remember), but I lost interest after a while from a combination of hearing it too much and just moving on to other music. I haven't heard it in decades. I must admit that as I listened just now, I was bored. Really bored. I recall hearing Morrisey's voice back then and liking that it was different from most pop/rock bands. I'm surprised to say this now, but to me when I hear him now he sounds like someone imitating Morrissey, and not in a flattering way. And while I can definitely appreciate the skill of the musicians, both in writing and performing, I just wasn't engaged with any of it.
Smiths are good but still feel samey - there is a light is amazing tho
Easy listening.
A bit whiny to be honest. Flow from one song to the next not noticing at all that it’s a different one. It just all sounds sad and slow.
The lyrics and singing were eh. But the instrumentals were spot on. Was never a big fan of Morrissey.
Definitely don’t like this as much as “Strangeways...” It’s not bad but some of it makes me roll my eyes.
5
It doesn't get a 1 because the music is actually ok. The vocals are terrible though and I couldn't listen ever again. His voice is ok but his lyrics and cadence aren't entertaining to me.
...80's... My struggle to appreciate it continues and this album did nothing to bring me closer to enlightenment. This dudes melodies are just.... non existent. This is up there with some of the worst we have heard yet to my ears.
Meh
I'm not sure if I've ever heard the smiths before. Voice sounds familiar. 6xx/Valhalla.
De weba... es todo
meh. all fun and good music until morrissey starts singing. few good catchy ones. indie rock pop.
SHIT
slower than I prefer for rock, some strange sounds. Lacks any sort of oomph. Overall very meh
meh
Good guitar work from Johnny Marr, but Morrissey is (a) a fascist, and (b) a smug-ass prick
It was dope but I didn’t really like it
I know this album is iconic but just doesn't do it for me.
2
Sorry, I can't stand this band!
Not Good.
Morrissey, I despise you. Every song is the same and lame
Boring, whiny, and generally uninteresting. Some fleeting catchy moments but nothing worth remembering
I absolutely love the music — the instrumental music — of The Smiths. Beautiful production, up-tempo alternative post-punk music that’s right up my alley. Unfortunately, the Great White Mope is an integral part of this band. Every Smiths album is marred by Morressey, who I absolutely cannot stand. Some of my favorite artists, including The Decemberists, love The Smiths. Apparently there’s a literacy and cleverness and send of humour there, too. But I simply cannot see or hear it. Everything about Morrissey grates — his voice, his style of singing, all the lyrics. It’s just awful. I know it s supposed to be funny and ironic, but the way he sings and the words he chooses….ugh. It’s like someone with absolutely no sense of humour trying to be funny and clever and witty. I would love for someone to take the entire Smiths catalog, strip it down to instrumentals, and layer over the top an entirely different set of lyrics sung by anyone else. This would probably be one of my favorite bands.
there is a light that never goes out is a banger. I didn't like the rest.
I don't like the smiths. Why is he so fucking whiny
Fuck Morrisey
I have never liked The Smiths. Re-listening to this has not changed my mind.
Alright, I don't hate "Cemetry Gates" (I'm a sucker for Yeats) but that doesn't excuse the rest of the album or Morrissey's voice.
Not my jam.
boring, monotonous, nothing special
Je l'ai même pas fini 1*
an incredibly samey album that I do not wish to hear again. how there are so many smiths fans I will never understand.
0 the worst album I ever heard. Literally no song is over 3 points out of ten. I would listen to 80 hours straight of screaming gore sounds.
I truly don't get the appeal of The Smiths.
I tire of your meandering, quizzical I-don't-know-what-the-fuck-to-call-it.
Shite
Listening to this album again I have to say "Vicar In a Tutu" is truly one of a kind, and I smiled when it came on; however, the rest is shit except for "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" which is above average, but it is not nearly as good as "Vicar In a Tutu."
I too say fuck Morrissey
Ask one of the indie heads and NME seat sniffers and they'll tell you this is one of the most important and influential albums of all time. Ask a human being and they'll tell you it is the most miserable twaddle this side of The Cure. Me, I'm a human being.
The Smiths are so frustrating! Had the rest of the band not met Morrissey, and stumbled into a different singer, they could have been a great band. Musically it's all quite nice, the odd song here and there is even almost bearable, but he really has to go. Another voice here would be glorious. Horrible little man.
Ew, morrisey. You're not getting my stream-pennies. There are so many good covers of smith songs, plus johnny marr solo work that I'll listen to before I support morrisey..
My response to The Smiths is always the same - sounds like a first year beat poet is trying to make contact with his cetacean people. 1 star because you can't vote 0.
Didn’t like them then, don’t like them now
Of all the bands The Smiths is somehow one of them. Like The Ramones everybsong is basically the same formula. Unlike The Ramones they are dreadfully boring.
Never got the whole morrisey thing, so not for me
The incessant quaker oats adverts on YouTube provide a welcome break from the nasally droning of the Smiths.
oh ffs... theres more than one?
fart shitty indie bullshit rock
Really tried. He sounds whiny
The Smiths. I’ve reviewed one of their other albums on here. Still not heard anything to change my mind that they’re just not very good. Mare’s guitar about the only bright spot in an otherwise dreary landscape. Did not enjoy.
I hate this band
I fucking hate the smiths
Mid
Dull music for people who think they’re interesting.
GOING IN: Neutral - I liked some of their stuff FAMILIARITY: Know a song or two SKIP RATE: Light skipper (1-2 tracks) REPLY VALUE: One and done DISCOVERY CURVE: Never clicked ALBUM ARC: Weak start, side B is better VERDICT: Bit underwhelming FAVOURITE TRACK: Cemetry Gates
nid so mis
it was awful. Some good music on their and talented musicians then that soppy flat monotone starts and ruins the lot. I hate his voice and anyone who says they like this sort of crap is just too scared to say they dont
Don't like the smiths at all
Woof. Are we still supporting Morrissey?
Generic Metal. Nothing to write home about.
No
Not good. Not good at all. 1
Always liked Jonny Marr’s guitar work and the bands musicality. But Morrisey - a waste of space. 1 star from me
Couldn't get through this, his voice was worse than nails on a chalkboard to me
Hate Morrissey
He can get in the bin
Nah. mostly boring, with a couple of tunes that I recall from my youth, but not my thing
"Hello, is this the suicidal hotline?"
Both the music and the musician suck
See my comment for the Beatles
Why he so sad 3/10
Thought I would hate this. I didn't like it. But it wasn't as bad as I assumed. Doesn't sound like poor punk garbage by any means. And that's sort of what I assumed.
This is my introduction to the Smiths. I dreaded listening to this as I figured it wouldn’t be my taste. I was right, but I still tried to remain open minded as I like to prove myself wrong. Unfortunately, not a single song on this album is memorable nor worth going out of your way to listen to. While it’s possible that the Smiths have music/ albums that are my taste, I’m not inclined to look into them. I also wouldn’t recommend this to anyone as a must listen to album. There’s much better music out there.
Pass
The 1 Star is for me putting up with this drivel - reaffirms my loathing of Morrissey.
Fuck Morrissey, the arrogant cunt.
again, trying too hard to be like the cure. But it was the 80's
Was not a fan of this, there were only some moments of 2 star quality for me but overall a 1
No, Morrissey, you don’t “know how Joan of Ark felt.” You are not that important, or important to culture or history at all. You’re super-self absorbed, and it shows in your singing. Really too bad your lyrical delivery obscures the rest of the band, which actually sounds great. Smiths without Morrissey might be a 4. With Morrissey, it’s a 1.
Repeat listen
This album is better than I expected, I give it a solid 1 star.
Not my bag, baby. I tried.
boring, uninspired
I don’t like solemn British new wave bands. At all.
0/10 I despised this. Only listenable songs were frankly Mr shankly and some girls are bigger than others
I've managed to never intentionally hear the Smith's for my entire life thus far, and I will not begin now. Morrissey is a proper c**t.
Mwh
heard this one enough times to know my feelings. not doing it today!
Fuck Morrissey
1/5
All songs are the same, borring songs, borring voice, meh
Least favorite group this project has introduced.
This album sucks and so does Morrisey. Pretentious bullshit from the 80s
This guy, whine whine whine. A different singer and maybe but blah.
Slightly better than the last Smiths album but wow, I don't think I like Morrissey's voice at all. It sounds like he has a toad in the back of his throat at all times. I found myself slightly enjoying.. parts.. of songs, but didn't have one I could listen to all the way through without cringing.
How was it a surprise to anyone to find Morrissey is an insufferable twat?
This is the 86th album I’m rating. I’ve heard that Summer really likes this shit but I’ve never listened to a song. Adding to my Playlist - Vicar in a Tutu and There is a Light that never goes Out. Not Adding to my Playlist - The Queen is Dead, Frankly, Mr. Shankly, I Know it’s Over, Never had no one Ever, Cemetry Gates, Bigmouth Strikes Again, The Boy with the Thorn in his Side, and Some Girls are Bigger than Others. The Queen is Dead - Summer was wrong. Vicar in a Tutu - I actually like this it feels very fun and energetic but maybe it isn’t cause I’m not really listening to the lyrics. There is a Light that never goes Out - I can’t stop thinking about Summer’s version. All in all I liked 2/10 songs. Wow The Smiths suck everybody lied when they said this album was good.
ass
Boring
I was happiest before hearing this album, and second happiest when it finished. Fuck Morrissey.
Ts sucked bro. Full stop
Day 90 - March 1st, 2025 Reasons why I hate British people: - Beans and tuna on baked potatoes - Morrissey
There's some decent music on here, but it's ruined by the fact Morrissey sings on every song. I don't like his voice, and really don't like him as a person either. That's not the rest of the band's fault, but it pushes me away from them regardless. If I'm going to listen to The Smiths, I'd rather listen to covers than hear him.
the first song had be like "okay, this actually might be a Smiths album that I enjoy and can vibe with" that definitely ended after the first song.
Dull and long. There’s an argument for a 2, but I’m tired of this sound on the list!
Another smiths album??? Wtf
"The tracks on this list are not available" Thank you Spotify for saving me from having to suffer through any of Morrissey's voice.
Morrissey is nobody's friend. If Morrissey were an ice cream flavor, he'd be pralines and dick.
скучно
I don’t like heavy British accents being the whole point of the band
Based on the previous smiths, not interested in this.
I disliked this very much. I think that if I was a South Park Emo kid I might have been more into listening it while smoking behind the gym.
This was always going to be a difficult one. I have always disliked, no hated the smiths since they came onto the world. It’s that whiney little fuck that sings for them., he makes me feel like I want to punch someone or stick sharp objects in my ears. This is the 1st time I have gotten through a whole album of this simpering, grey Manchester sky of a man, and no it wasn’t any better than I thought. - stayed away from others and sharp objects. I know it’s humour behind the act but doesn’t lessen the blow for me. I know people who actually like this, who say listen past him to the music -and if he would just turn the I’m sooo miserable schtick down for I moment but he is there front and centre being such a miserable , not that’s enough. Music should be for all emotional scope and if this is your thing good for you, I do get why they have such a cult following, but this hasn’t changed anything for me still hate them.
I really tried to like this, but just couldn’t.
Droney bollocks
it was ok, not my style really
The Smiths would be a decent group if it wasn’t for that twat and his dreadful voice and worse opinions.
Miserable music for miserable people.
4 songs were enough. Cannot handle the vocals. Please get out the MIB neuralyzer and make me forget this album and the Smiths. More Sex Pistols and Clash please.
Never been a fan, don't understand their appeal at all
Nope to Morrisey
Overall: 1/10 I'm happy for the people that enjoy this but I've always hated The Smiths with a passion and listening to this album in full didn't do anything to sway me. I truly think that Morrissey is a godawful vocalist and the music behind him bores me to tears. I think it might be mostly the guitar tone, it's like nails on a chalkboard for me. One of the easiest 1 stars I'll ever give out, and if I hadn't promised myself to give every album a chance, I'd have completely skipped it (and I'm wishing I did). Fav Song: Cemetry Gates (They're all garbage but the bass is actually pretty great in this song) Least Fav Song: Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
Before starting this album journey I knew who the smiths/Morrissey was but had never listened to them. After their first album I thought I could understand why they were recognized for what they did. After the 5th or so album, I don't get it at all. Fuck Morrissey and Fuck the Smiths. Actual nonsense music that would sound the same if a wailing donkey was singing. The only good thing about this album is that it's under 40 minutes and doesn't drag out the torture.
I do not get the smiths and I am at peace with that
1.5
i hate morrissey you do NOT know how joan of arc felt
Pretty good not my kinda music kinda boring
Too melodramatic for me
Meh
Is she ?
Simply terrible assembly of musical notes
I fell asleep listening to it, so I think that tells you what I thought of it.
Steve is so full of himself and probably depressed. He try’s to be deep but comes off as pretentious.
Really. First Belle and Sebastian, now this. Once in my twenties I took some acid. After ditching my friends and skateboarding through puddles in a shopping centre carpark for an hour I went home. There were Smiths film-clips playing on a night time music show. I sat down on the couch and watched 8 or 9 Smiths videos to give them the benefit of the doubt. I was equal parts intrigued and dismayed. Don't do drugs, kids. Vivat regina. 1 star..
More of this fella? I don't get it. Never have
Zero Hate Morrissey
Couldn't finish tbh. This album sucks
I hate this album and music
One of the most sinfully boring albums I’ve ever even attempted to listen to.
This album was written by an energy vampire. It sucked so friggin bad. If I could give a 0 / 5 I would
Once again: Too nice for punk, too indie for easy listening, too silent for rock. Not impressive for me.
Ugh... Another one that is tough to separate from opinions I formed a lifetime ago. A single track here that borderlines on wanting to rock, but mostly it's all sad-boi jangly bullshit with some nonce crooning over the top. Never understood the hype here. Oh, and lest I forget, fuck Morrissey straight to hell.
I know I'm supposed to love it, but I just don't get it
Again having to rate the performers for being terrible people. 1.
80’s New Age shite.
It's like listening to the same song over and over again for an hour. Pretty bad in my opinion.
Fuuuuuuuckkk Morrissey for the third time (but this one is the best Smiths record)
Sorry can't stand the Smith's as I didnt spend my youth being melancholy in student digs with floppy hair and a crippling sense of injustice. Morrisey a twat as as well which doesn't help.
Not for me
Not a good start. The singer's voice is awful to listen to and makes me want to fall asleep or throw up. A couple of the songs where he isn't whining too much are ok. 2 songs made my playlist that were more upbeat. A better singer would have made the album alright, although a couple of the songs can't be saved. The intro song got me ready for what was to come. D Tier. Moving on.
Dookie
This was just not a good album. The vocals were all over the place. The guitar playing was sloppy. The lyrics were... a thing. Altogether they combined to make a very regrettable experience.
Just can't relate to this at all. Seems like one of those generic rock bands whose purpose is to embody the average so other bands can be excellent or terrible. If they were interesting at a particular time in history, it is lost upon me today.
