In general, I don't listen to much techno. Unfortunately, this won't really change my mind much.
Reminds me a lot of Zero 7 Simpler Things... the chillout electronic vibe is great. La Femme d'argent is incredible, and songs like Sexy Boy, Kelly Watch the Stars and Talisman find their vibe. Very enjoyable.
Gave me flashbacks to my 20s when I lived in DC. Feels like a Friday night at a lounge or friend’s party. I forgot how much I loved this album. Sets you up for just a real chill, mellow evening.
Oh man. I remember when this album came out, and I pretended to love it, but really only loved the opening track. But they're French! Honestly, it was all just to swoopy and chill. Well, sadly, 23 years later I'm old enough to find this to be great background music while I work. Apparently you have to be old to really dig this.
Ah, the sound of 1998 sophistication, familiar from every coffee shop, dinner party and dorm room that wanted to class itself up a bit. I think I prefer the Beth Hirsch vocal tracks to anything else on here. "Le soleil est près de moi" from the Premiers Symptômes EP really should have been included too. 4 stars for nostalgia.

Rauhallista tunnelmaa ja ilmavaa (hehhehe) sointia. Tämä täytyy pistää muistiin, sopinee hyvin viikonloppujen päiväaikaan taustamusiikiksi. Kuuntelin tämän levyn kaiuttimista ja kuulokkeilla. Kaiuttimilla kuulosti paremmalta, kai tämä on sen sorttista kamaa, että myös kuunteluvälineillä on väliä.
Paluu vanhaan suosikkilevyyn. Tämä herättää aika samankaltaisia tunteita kuin aiemmin arvosteltu Mobyn Play. Vaikken sinänsä en keksi suurempia moitteita levystä tai sen kappaleista, ei tämä vaan sytytä enää ihan samalla tavalla kuin aiemmin. Erityisesti hittibiisit (La Femme Argent, Sexy Boy, Kelly Watch the Stars) tuntuivat vähän väsähtäneiltä. Eniten juuri nyt miellyttivätkin levyn loppupään kappaleet You Make It Easy, Ce Matin-La ja New Star in the Sky. Vanhoilla meriiteillä tämä olisi ollut selvä nelonen. Nyt keikutaan kolmosen ja nelosen välimaastossa. Muihin kolmosen levyihini vertaamalla arvosana pyöristyy ylöspäin.
Great album. Reminds me of working nights at a TV studio and playing that in the background while working.
I was never super bother about this when it came out, because of the simple, repetitive vocal hooks. But relistening now I’d discounted a lot of really nice production. I recognised a lot more of the instrumentals than I would have expected.

Electronic French duo 'Air' successfully executes atmospheric downtempo music, albeit lacking much flair. The minimalist approach to both arrangement and production lay the groundwork for an effective laid-back record, which 'Moon Safari' definitely encapsulates. Perfect for disconnecting from the world with its unsophisticated musical backdrop, the record remains polished despite weaknesses stemming from its hermetic nature.
A lot of songs that you've heard earlier, but you cannot name them.
Very solid ambient. Would listen again.
This stood a head above the typical electronica fare from this list so far for me. I really dig the chill, atmospheric mood and vocals.

Med musikens drömmiga ljud och harmoniska melodier kunde jag sjunka ner i marken och smältas in i musiken. Albumets extraordinära förmåga att väcka empati hos lyssnaren gjorde det till en minnesvärd upplevelse. Albumet lyckas nå en känsla som få gör. Trots den exceptionella egenskapen har vägen till kvaliteten otillräckligheter. Musiken kändes för tunn vid vissa tillfällen. Ett logiskt motargument hade varit att det är albumets tendens och teknik för att producera det de vill uppnå. Enligt mig framstod dessa tunna delar vara ostadiga, otrygga och obearbetade.

So I was thinking, I've been handing out too many 5 stars lately, therefore Moon Safari needs to get 4 stars. But then I started listening to the album again after, admittedly, way too long a break. The bass lines on the first track (La femme d'argent) were all it took to make me shiver and recall taking the chance and buying the CD based on an old friend's recommendation. And then Sexy Boy, and then Beth Hirsch's voice, and on and on - each and every song on this album is something special. I'm sorry to say it, but this is "another" 5 stars album. How I loved Air! But I still need a lot of Air.

There are some gorgeous songs here. These guys really know how to craft a relaxing and wondrous atmosphere to get lost in. Unfortunately, the line between "relaxing and wondrous" and "just kinda boring:" is a thin one, and it is nearly a coin flip to determine which side any song falls on. It is a nice album, but not consistent enough for me in its execution.

I always used to think French pop started and finished with Serge Gainsbourg. This is the album that changed my mind
I'm not sure how it's taken me almost a quarter of a century to listen to this, but I certainly won't be leaving it 23 years before its next spin. A brilliant album from start to finish. A really nice, vibe that hits the perfect spot between fun and relaxing. Some bangers that I was already familiar with, interspersed with chilled out tracks, giving this album a great flow and feel. Effortlessly cool and catchy without being cheesy. Instantly love it.
Not really aged that well…
I have definitely heard "La femme d'argent" and a few others in a movie or something. Would not have listened to this on my own and don't think I would have found it either. The tracks exude Pink Floyd's psychedelic majesty, jazz's subdued ambience, random quotations from the history of soul, funk and disco music, and more than a passing mention of Burt Bacharach's and Ennio Morricone's scores. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: All I need

Air produced something close to pure bliss with this record, creating a set of songs completely apt for the name of the album. "La femme d'argent" shoots for the moon and dances its way to the surface in a hazy paradise. I could listen to that bassline groove for the whole album, but after what feels like no time at all we're hit with "Sexy Boy"'s distorted synth-bass, the beat crashes in and we hear possibly the most seductive vocal ever delivered through a Leslie speaker. The rest of the album floats delicately between lush ballads, danceable psych-rock, and blatantly ELO-reminiscent strings and vocoder (looking at you "Remember"). All the lyrics are fairly immaterial, forming part of the landscape more than anything to live by or get tattooed on your arm. But that's not an issue here- the beauty of this album brought it close to a 5* listen, showcasing everything a band like Pink Floyd could have been doing in the 90s if they hadn't become plodding, middle-aged Radio 2 kissers. This is a 9/10 for sure- rounding down because I didn't think it finished as well as it started.

Surprisingly enjoyable. I thought, upon hearing the first track “okay some more ephereal French flim flam - let’s see how this goes” but with a light hand on the tiller, Air guide us through the rivers of the world. Unusual, and quite unique sounding - there’s plenty of tonal variety and texture within the gestalt of waifish French flim flam. You know what? I’ve talked myself into a 4. In reality probably a 3.5, but I’m feeling good after that, so yeah. 4.
Oh, it sounds like this?! Saw this album dozens of times as a kid without ever hearing it. Expected it to sound like proto-Landfill Indie but it actually sounds like a coma patient waking up. Because it renders 60's positivity with a 90's futurism whose grasp almost exceeds its reach, that patient could be any number of dead, buried and long-forgotten bands. And because the silly-spooky voices and cute piano figures are imbued with a wry whimsy, I'm guessing the band find their venture both fun and funny. I do too, without ever being totally roused out of my hospital bed. Also has the MASSIVE benefit of featuring THAT song from 10 Things I Hate About You, which I probably watched as many times as I saw this album cover in HMV.

Second album by this group to show up on my list. I like this one a little better. Nice to listen to today while I worked. I found myself chuckling a bit because the opening bars of the first cut, "La femme d'argent," sound somewhat similar to the Grateful Dead's "Scarlet Begonias." [[Eventually, one way or another, everything connects :-) ]]

Very chill album, not really my style but still nice
Never heard this before. From the opening bass line of LA femme d'argent I knew this was a sound tailor made for me. Gorgeous melodies, dancey rhythms and that bass, just lovely. It slows a bit in the middle section that keeps it from a 5 for me, but a strong 4 🌟

It's fine, not my cup of tea.
This record shows in some cases a similar style to Daft Punk, but with fewer extremely annoying "experimental" sirenes and blaring synthesizers that make you want to pierce your eardrums with a toothpick. However, some songs do depend too much on generic elevator/video-game menu music vibes, or take a little bit too long to become exciting. Songs that are worth being added to my collection, are Voyage, Ce matin-la, Femme d'argent, Kelly and All I Need. I feel that each of these songs adds something new to the experience, different instrumentals, different tempo but the same funky and relaxing atmosphere. With me liking exactly 50 percent of the album, I feel it deserves an overall score of 6/10.

“Sexy Boy” has aged better than a lot of other singles of its era. Air picks a lane and stays there, which makes for a coherent record, even if I don’t see myself revisiting it.

Ich schreibe auf deutsch um meine wortgewandheit in meiner Muttersprache ein bisschen zu steigern. Ich habe zuvor noch nie von der Band oder dem Album gehört, aber war vom ersten Song an gefesselt. Der opener La femme d'argent hat mir besonders gut gefallen, genauso wie die nachfolgenden Stücke. Am Ende litt meine Hörerfahrumg wohl ein wenig an meiner kurzen Aufmerksamkeitsspanne und dem meinem Alltagsstress, dennoch ein sehr schönes erstes Album, sehr entspannend, einfach sehr cool. Ich liebe das Konzept dieser Webseite, ohne sie wäre dieses Juwel mit Sicherheit an mir vorbeigegangen.
31st May 2021 Listened on the drive home to London. Sometimes an album catches you perfectly, and this says a lot about the importance of when and where you listen to an album. Summer afternoon, window down, perfect. Air walked so Daft Punk could do the robot?
I'd have really enjoyed this when I was in high school, I think. I believe I heard the 2nd track back in those days, but the 1st track is the real gem.

Unlike most electronica producers, Air had musical ideas that stretched beyond samplers or keyboards, and Moon Safari found those ideas wrapped up in music that was engaging, warm, and irresistible.
Air does a great job here presenting a group of well-crafted electronic pop songs. The duo presents Moon Safair as a playground of synths, but with some buoys of organic and familiar samples floating along the surface to not get lost. Fav tracks: Kelly Watch the Stars and Remember
Based on my prior encounters with Air in several soundtracks, I was surprised how eclectic and varied their style is from track-to-track. Not all of it clicks for me, but there's a handful of excellent lite electronic pop songs. That sample of "Do It Again" on "Remember" came out of nowhere! The duo's attention to detail and arrangement choices are consistently intriguing and tasteful, as well, which pushes it up a notch for me. Rating: 3.5/5 Favourite tracks: "La femme d'argent", "Kelly Watch the Stars", "Remember"
Wow, it's incredible how boring they are able to be. I don't think I've heard many more boring albums in my entire life (OK, Bob Marley is still worse). Not sure why anyone would ever put this on except for just letting something play in the background that won't distract people and which they won't remember.

4stars bc of the multi media use. Electronic album with every instrument imaginable. Not a GREAT breakbeat/trip hop album, but good and entertaining.
Definitely interesting. It's really 'close' to the style of music I am into, but it didn't fully capture my fancy. I don't think it was bad at all, it's just so casual groove it was hard for me to be into it.

4.4 + I’ve loved this album ever since I first l heard it at a Newbury Comics listening station. There’s a breathy, shimmery quality that pervades the entire record — appropriately, it makes me imagine floating in space.

“Moon Safari” by Air (1998) Robot music with flashes of beauty. Spare barely-lyrics, apparently designed to briefly and very occasionally engage the mind. Some nice bass guitar work over colorful percussion, with electrojazz keyboards. But the keyboard arrangements are relatively simple and soulless right-hand paste ups. Chord structures are inelegant and repetitive. This is music to listen to when your brain is doing something else. Emotional engagement is minimal, mostly as a spectator sport. “Sexy Boy” feels like it was written about a male love doll or a Steely Dan. Vocals by Beth Hirsch (“All I Need”, “You Make It Easy”) are very engaging. Actually these two tracks stand apart on this album, relegating the electronic music to the background where, frankly, it belongs. Excellent tuba (I kid you not) solos by Patrick Woodcock on “Ce Matin-là”. Overall, though, this album does not inspire. 2/5
I can't believe this was released in 98! This was so influential when it came out, I was into Sophia Coppola's films at the time also, particularly Virgin Suicides so this really hit the spot. The way they were able to blend groovy sounds from the 60s and 70s into this new \"chill out\" sound was really innovative and this album holds up surprisingly well today.
Throwback to twenty years ago when every coffee shop, hair salon and Club Monaco would just rotate between this album and St. Germain Tourist. Love this album though.

On the fence on how to rate this one; not my favourite Air album (behind "Talkie Walkie") but for a laid-back downtempo album it's very well executed. Will err on the side of rewarding it for the space it occupies.
Progressive, but not a rock. Not bad at all to work by.

I'm usually not a big fan of electronic music, but this album is just great. I know the bar isn't very high but it's probably my favourite of its genre.

Very fun ambient exotica, immaculately produced and with great tunes. A warm bath of an album.
Very smooth and some cool-sounding electronic stuff. Not usually my speed but I enjoyed it.
-I can hear the influence on other music, but this isn't really drawing me in -"talisman" is spy music -I don't really know when I would listen to this again -"Le Voyage de Penelope" was good
Enjoyed that. Basically a collection of every big-budget advert's soundtrack over the last 10 years, but it was a really good listen. One I'd never heard of that I'll definitely re-visit.
I was not expecting to love this album the way I did. It is a level of chill and relaxing that is just sublime, and the choices of pads and synths carry the sound without ever getting stale. Best one so far.

I’d heard a few Air songs before, so I knew what I was in store for. Very synthy. Not really catchy, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Psychedelic synth porn got me drooling omg. The basslines are varied both in melody and in tone with some upright, some electric, and lots of synth bass everywhere. It's like a retro Avalanches record. Which, notable difference is how analogue everything sounds and I can't really describe it any other way. I also love the mixing in this - very much an album for headphones and drugs. My only gripe is that Sexy Boy doesn't hit and some of the songs run a bit long.
Some interesting stuff, but mostly sounded like bad 1980s movie soundtrack drivel

I’ve officially reached one full week of experiencing and giving my impressions of the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It’s been a fun and rewarding project and this is album number seven. The second of which I knew absolutely nothing about.. The album of the day is titled Moon Safari by the French band Air. This effort was released in 1998, one of my favorite years in music in my lifetime in that I was old enough to really start making my own decisions in what I like but more importantly, when I was able to buy my own collection of cassettes and tapes. Full disclosure, I’m not all that knowledgeable about electronic music, EDM, techno and all other related music. I can’t name a single Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers or The Prodigy song. (I do know Fire Starter though!) While I’ve never been able to relate to a lot of this style of music, I respect it and acknowledge it’s influential impact on many, many other genres, including my first love, hip hop. Now that I’ve gotten the homage paying part out of the way, I have to give my honest thoughts on Moon Safari with having only 24 hours with it... There are so many other better albums that could have taken the place of this mediocre record. I don’t intend to offend, but I doubt that I will. Sure, if you put this cassette in the tape deck of my 1988 Acura Integra in 1998, I won’t go rushing for the eject button. It’s not bad at all in any way. I really didn’t mind it. It just didn’t scratch any particular itch for me. I didn’t find myself yearning to hear any of these songs again. Sometimes I’ll listen to a new song obsessively on repeat. Not the case here. I do really like the bass on most tracks. The few songs that actually had vocals were okay. The 70’s synthesizers were dope. I’m not hating on Air or their debut album Moon Safari.. But.. In the end, I won’t go back to this album. I need re-playability in my music. If I’m watching a movie and hear a song from this cut in the soundtrack, I may not even recognize it. There are a couple stand out cuts from a project that, to me, sounded more like a demo from a couple of really talented producers that have yet to find their muse. The second song on the record, Sexy Boy, was the most satisfying with the synthetic voice as a catchy rift. The title song, Moon Safari, one of the two only songs that featured a singer, is a cool 90’s love song. I just feel like their are many other really good albums that should have had their place in this collection. Such as Salt’n Pepa’s Hot Cool and Vicious, or The Barenaked Ladies Stunt album released the same year as Moon Safari, a massive hit. Those are just two examples of monster records that were left off of the list. Oh well. At the end of the day, I didn’t write the book, I’m just consuming it. I’m enjoying every album no matter what. Please share your thoughts, memories and impressions, especially if you’ve experienced Moon Safari for the first time because of this post. If you know and love this album to death, and hold it dearly to your heart please feel free to tell me how wrong I am, because we all perceive music differently and that’s okay!! ✌️

Really not something I'd listen to normally. Kinda ambient, downtempo electronica. First track sounds like a movie OST. Actually makes for great background music while working but nothing really jumps out as something I'd go back to. Last track sounds like a sci-fi alien/robot sex scene.

Moon Safari was the exact calm I needed when I gave it a listen. Air gives me the vibes of one of my favorite bands, TWRP, and I felt like I was floating in space when I listened to the album. A very positive vibe.
I've heard some of this album before and didn't know it was Air. I don't need to hear some of that album again though so it's fine

Man, I'd totally forgotten about this band. There was a short period where this album was on regular rotation in my college apartment. I had a roomate who became totally enamored with them after hearing one of their tracks on a commercial. I actually really like several of these tracks despite Air being part of that same European school of electronic music as Daft Punk. The repetitiveness of the songs tends to annoy me after three minutes in or so. The songs are, on average, about a minute longer than they should be. That said, it's an album full of good, chill, background jams. I still a fan of La Femme d'Argent, All I Need, and Talisman.

Just didn't do it for me. I had somewhat high expectations and was kind of underwhelmed. The whole album was just meh.
It has a very fun relaxing and unique attitude but I can think of quite a few EDM or adjacent acts that I would just rather be listening to. But I at least expect to put this on again from time to time.
