There is beauty in simplicity. It is what first drew me to punk and hardcore. Stripped off any bells and whistles, one is allowed to fully appreciate what is truly trying to be displayed, whether its unhinged rage or vitriolic thoughts. Other times, a simplicity in musical arrangements allow for each player to take up more space in the room, and not only display their prowess, but their ability to function as a unit. That ability is what first drew me to bands like Bad Religion and Radio Birdman, and today it is what I enjoy about this album. The album title really lives up to its name of being a Sunday; light, breezy and carefree, but not devoid of thought or emotion. The piano work of Billy Evans that I am entirely unfamiliar with, and while this writer would be hard-pressed to distinguish him from any other jazz pianist, it was the Trio's ability to have to play a part while playing apart. The walking basslines (of one Scott La Faro) and lively snare and hi hat work made for a fun listen on its own, and was only augmented by the melodically atonal piano of Mr Evans. The fact that this was recorded live makes it the more intriguing.

Iconic live jazz release

I am in a situation in which I appreciate jazz, I find it enjoyable. Yet, I find it hard to judge it. So I'll keep it on the average side (sorry jazz fans).

Really good jazz album from 1961

Having listened to what is “routinely ranked as one of the best live jazz recordings of all time”, I think I can safely say I don’t like jazz.

Jesus, what a reprieve after the Butthole Surfers. Every time I hear jazz, I think a few things: "This is really proficient and top-notch musicianship" AND "I have no idea where this slots in with other jazz music" AND "I could listen to this in the background constantly. That being said, I typically prefer non-piano jazz. I mean, I like jazz with pianos. Just not as as the focal point. Except the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. That's my jam. This is fine. 2.5 rounded down for not standing out. Oh wait. 1961. It must've made a splash at that time.

I’ll reiterate this every time I’m presented with a jazz album on this list - jazz should be enjoyed live and in person, imho. Theres just something about it that I want to “see” when I hear it. It should be an experience. That said, this trio is clearly talented. Also, it was recorded live with all the glasses clinking in the background and everything - that was cool. And, admittedly, this is as close as you can get to experiencing these guys live at this point as I assume they’re all dead. So - nice work.

The first thing I noticed about this is how accessible this album is. I would bet I could play this to a hardcore jazz aficionado or someone who didn't listen to any jazz and they would enjoy it. The recording and the playing on this is masterful. Orrin Keepnews the produced is as much to credit hear as the band as he captured this performance so well.

This is certainly a smooth album that puts a smile on my face. Gorgeous!

a fabulous jazz trio playing in a wonderful jazz club - what's not to love?

Don't know much about this genre / style of music. I'd hold my snarky criticism if I had any, but this is super-good stuff. Lovely, coffee-and-pajamas Sunday morning listening. Hi-fives.

What's the superior jazz arrangement? The trio, or the "classic quartet?" Since I don't know diddly about jazz music, other than it generally sounds chill, maybe the answer lies in an exploration of other trios and quartets. Groups of three can be great. The triple play-turning trio of Tinkers to Evers to Chance. The Musketeers were great as a three-piece, but weren't too bad as a quartet either. I've heard some enjoy a ménage à trois, but can't verify. Trios professional wrestling. The Three Amigos. Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Three's Company (oops, already covered that one). Luke, Han, and Leia (sorry Chewie). The Three Stooges. The Powderpuff Girls. And the list goes on. Wow, that's a lot of high quality trios. On the other hand you've got the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Beatles, the Fantastic Four/Incredibles, the Ghostbusters, the South Park boys, the Four Horsemen (either of the apocalypse or of professional wrestling), the Golden Girls. This experiment has proven inconclusive. As has my attempt to review this jazz album.

It did not help that I was listening to this in the late afternoon when I was already tired but this is sooooo low energy.

This gets an extra star because, while I wasn’t in a swanky bar in the 80s wearing a slinky dress and very red lipstick while I was listening to it, someday I might be.

I have no doubt this is a quality jazz album, but sheesh I nearly fell asleep. The very long bass solo in Solar is just too much for me to handle. I can’t take it. Not enough excitement. This is the background music at a cocktail hour not a concert for which I would want to pay money.

This is a nice album, but simply not something you have to hear before you die.

Standout - Alice in Wonderland - Take 2 It was nice-sounding jazz, but it didn't capture my attention (or I didn't give it my full attention)

This album is more jazz than I can bear. I can hear that the players are masters of craft, but all of the tracks are endlessly meandering, with the performers playing in a very self-serving manner, as opposed to song-serving. I know this is par for the course for jazz, and I know that I don't like that. I also dislike how more than one take of the same songs needed to be be included on this album. 2.5/5, which I'll round up.

I went down a Wiki rabbit hole about the Village Vanguard - it's the oldest jazz club in NYC that's still in operation, and so many big careers were launched. This album was so soothing to listen to. I love the ambiance of everyone dining too. If I ever make it to NYC to visit, I'll make a point of going there to visit the Village Vanguard. Super interesting trio - they made a point to give all three of them equal melodic responsibility, which I think I'm paraphrasing from the Spotify bio. But it was interesting to listen with that in mind.

Sunday At The Village Vanguard is an ok jazz album. It's a live album, but I do not really get if that factors in to it. No punishment to listen to it, but it does not stick. More like a high quality background sound setting a mood.

Overall, I liked it. Was kind of annoyed with the live setting at points. I didn't realize I'd just randomly having people chit chatting in the background. Was making me think someone was talking in my house or something. Bugged me out until like the 5th song lol. It's alright though, It's very much a hotel Lobby slapper.

One of the best albums on the list that I hadn't heard before I began this project. Solid four stars.

I listened to this 8 times yesterday, and will do so again today. This is like the jazz album you wanted to discover to help you get a better understanding. Backstory is amazing, it's just incredible brass free jazz.

Very barebones jazz. I enjoy it a lot though, builds an excellent atmosphere. Sounds Christmas-adjacent, so 'tis sort of the season. It's a live album, which I never would've guessed if it wasn't stated in the title because it all sounds like studio quality. There's clapping to be heard, but that could be the musicians' families in the studio? I don't know, the point is it's jazz baby, it sounds great. Favorite tracks: Alice In Wonderland, Gloria's Step, My Man's Gone Now. Album art: Really nothing much at all, just a portrait. I would've opted for something more artistic, representative of the mood. 4/5

Do you like Jazz? This was easy listening whilst at work, and I'd happily listen to it working again.

This is hard to rate. If I was into jazz this would be a 5/5. If it was about whether or not I'd ever play this album again it'd be a 2/5. If it was about me trying to seem sophisticated to house guests it'd be a 5/5 again. I do like jazz. But not this much. I did enjoy it a lot and my productivity increased. 4/5 it is

Nice relaxing music.

You have to immerse yourself in this. One of those albums you can just swim in.

Bill Evans died in 1980 when he was just 51 years old. This seems impossible considering that he appears to be at least 70 years old on the cover of this 1961 album. So it was a hard 51 for Evans, and that's before you learn about his intense addictions to both heroin and coke. I'm 51 years old as I write this sentence while listening to this classic album. I've now listened to 199 albums from a subjective list, the majority of which Bill Evans never got to hear. And guess what else, Bill? I still have plenty of time to get hooked on heroin and cocaine. I'm chalking that up as a win.

So good! Such a simple band with complex music. I loved it.

I don't like no-words songs

As a fan of rhythm section jazz, the Bill Evans Trio has been a favorite since I first sought them out after hearing Bill's work on Kind of Blue. That said, the band seems to meander through this set without much direction. It doesn't set the tone as well as on Waltz for Debbie and the playing seems to lack conviction. Not an unpleasant listen, but it fell into the background too easily.

This album is good and relaxing.

I enjoy Jazz well enough as a nice choice for background music; it's usually mellow, no lyrics to get distracted by and provides a noisy distraction during a lull in conversation. Don't really know what makes a good or bad Jazz album since a lot of it all sounds the same to me. Piano seemed to take more of a center stage than in many Jazz tunes which was immediately apparent on My Man's Gone Now and then throughout the album. I prefer more of the tsk, tsk, tsk of the drummer's cymbals and the bumb, bumb, bumb of the double bass along with some horns like the trumpet or sax. Album was pretty consistent throughout. A few tunes (can the be called songs?) started slow and thought they'd continue as such, Jade Visions being the exception. And what's with having the same tune multiple times on an album? I get they were different takes but sounded like the same versions to me.

Also cool that the bonus tracks, which amount to different takes of songs already on the album, are placed right next to the ones selected for the original album so you can hear the differences.

Sunday at the Village Vanguard by The Bill Evans Trio (1961) For those who, like me, have limited but pleasant experiences of progressive jazz, this album is a treat, however difficult it is to fully understand. Hopscotching in an orderly manner around the circle of fifths, Bill Evans on piano leads the trio with delicate and colorful elaborations, paced by steady but subdued rhythms on (mostly) snare and cymbals by drummer Paul Motian. But the most entrancing work on this record is delivered by bassist Scott LaFaro, whose virtuosity is dazzling. His composition “Jade Visions”, the closing track, is mesmerizing. Sadly, LaFaro died in a car accident ten days after this performance. The most melodically accessible track “Alice in Wonderland” is a good place to start. For those who love drum solos, check out the trio’s cover of Cole Porter’s “All of You”—skillful if not ambitious. As a live album, it is burdened by the distracting audience noise, droning along in the background by the small assembled crowd who are obviously not engaged in a serious listen. They’re not just ordering drinks. And their tepid, polite, and seemingly obligatory applause at the end of each number is anticlimactic. But that’s live jazz. Sigh. 4/5

Nice smoky, atmospheric jazz. The live setting and the background noise of the crowd add to the mood. This one gets better the more you listen to it, and what initially sounds a bit dense and impenetrable starts to make much more sense as your ears adjust and you begin to understand the perfect harmony and synchronicity that has been achieved between the piano, drums and bass.

Beautiful chemistry between these three. One of Scott La Faro's last recordings. Bill's voicings and phrasings in this performance are masterful.

A very subtle and relaxed album. The song structures seem, to my untrained ear at least, to be completely linear and unrepeating lines throughout. There aren't verses and choruses, just a start, an exploration and an end. I'm so accustomed to hearing repetition in music, that I'm unsure of what to make of it. It must take an immense knowledge and comfort with your instrument, with your bandmates and with the foundations of music theory to make music like this. What I can't say for the album, is that any one track stood out to me. This is probably again due to my lack of understanding the format of Jazz and the challenge of what they are doing as musicians, but I feel like I could be dropped into the middle of any of these songs and I would have no idea which one is which. Again, I don't really know what to make of it. All told, I wouldn't likely go out of my way to put this album on again, but I do feel opened to something new and I'm curious to learn more from others that do have a deeper appreciation/fascination with the genre.

J'ai demandé à Robert Dimery ce que faisait cet album dans la liste des 1001 et il m'a très rapidement répondu (Robert et moi sommes très proches) qu'il voulait à la base ajouter un autre album mais a cliqué sans le faire exprès sur une playlist appelée "3 hours jazz chillax music" et l'a insérée dans les 1001. Robert est quelqu'un d'extrêmement tête en l'air.

J'ai d'abord apprécié cet album le temps d'une piste ou deux, puis après plus de 3h de travail sur mon double écran Dell, je me suis rendu compte d'un petit soucis: L'album ne contenait en fait qu'une seule piste, j'avais seulement pressé la touche "Enable repeat" de mon lecteur Spotify. Un eternel recommencement.

Easy listening jazz noodling. I'm sure if you like that kind of thing it's very good, but it just reminds me of being on hold.

Jazz isn't for everybody, but I would implore everybody listen to this record. There are few musical acts that can obtain the synchronicity between members than that of the Bill Evans Trio. All musicians here are phenomenal and masters of their craft, but to me, Scott LaFaro and his bass are the star of the show. He takes the use of bass in jazz music up to this point and really expands its horizons. It becomes a melodic feature rather than just a background accompaniment. I'm not a jazz aficionado, so the genre takes a backseat in my active listening habits, but this is some of the best sounding jazz I've ever heard.

For me, jazz is performance art. I enjoy it so much more in person than over a recording.

I still don't get jazz. Can 3 people seemingly be playing their own song at the same time and it not sound bad. I guess the answer is yes, but it also doesn't sound great either. There are a few times in Solar and All of You where i found that i was getting into the groove and it was working for me... but too often the bass line would go from "vibing" to "annoying" like a gnat constantly flying around my face. I'll give them credit for what they're doing, but it isn't something i'll return to. I definitely enjoy Bill Evans' piano work. Impressive.

I have often relied on Bill Evan's music to relax. This album exemplifies what I like about his stuff - skillful yet low key, moody. The glasses clinking and occasional voices coming through really set the mood, you can imagine the setting.

I must say I don't love the virtuosic bass. I feel it interferes with the piano rather than supporting or driving and is simply playing too many notes and often too high for my taste. Wish their had been more individual mics on the drums. Sounds of the club atmosphere aren't too distracting but don't really do a whole lot for me either. I like a good jazz trio but the bass dominates to my ear so much I feel like it should be called the Scott LaFaro Trio not the Bill Evans Trio.

The history of the Bill Evans Trio is very sad. The bass player on this album, Scott LaFaro, died about 10 days after this was recorded in a car accident. Bill Evans went on to become addicted to drugs and died after ending treatment for syphilis. They made fantastic music together.

Disse-lhe que era muito fã dos Washington Wizards e ele começou a fazer uma dança esquisita em que batia com os calcanhares no lancil ao ritmo de Guantanamera. Eu achei um piadão. Ele não. Começou a tagarelar sobre as aberturas de Bobby Fischer e como, sozinhas, derrubaram toda a noção clássica do Ocidente. Quase lhe caiu o boné da Lacatoni. Assim que recebemos a dose de bacalhau à zé do pipo, mandámos para trás e gritámos a "Don't Look Back in Anger" na cara do empregado. Deviam ter visto. O coitado vomitou-se em jacto por cima da mesa da vereadora. Eu fui buscar uma Vileda à despensa mas o Luís ficou a acalmá-lo com as melhores anedotas do Fernando Rocha que tinha ainda guardadas na caixa de SMS. O licor de pepperoni foi por conta da casa. I've never really listened to jazz...but this is good jazz.

I used to be an instrumentalist. Classical and jazz. I wanted to like this album, I truly did. I liked the concept. The execution didn't do it for me. Felt like cheap music at an awkward dinner party.

Enjoyable calm jazz album. First few songs were the highlights. The second and third takes became a bit stale after a bit. But overall decent. 6.2/10

This is without a doubt great playing, but I wasn't thrilled by it. I respect it, especially for being recorded in 1961, but I probably won't relisten.

This is a complete personal opinion but I just did not vibe with this album. I understand the complexity of the musicianship but I prefer jazz to be a little higher-tempo. Easy listen but won't return most likely unless I need to background music to study to.

A phenomenal jazz album from one of the premier artists of the 60's and arguably ever in jazz. Evans keys and compositions are quite fascinating and continually engaging. And to no surprise if your familiar with the trio, the bass lines are endlessly fascinating as well. It's a wonderful jazz set from one of its masters.

My Man's Gone Now: almeno questa c'ha un accenno tematico che non sia solo cazzeggio modale. Almeno all'inizio... Vabbè ma che me scrivo qua "pezzo" per "pezzo"... Passamo alla conclusione: Eh boh che devo dì? Cioè sto album mi arriva così anonimo che poteva essere stato fatto da un qualsiasi trio jazz. Ma infatti il jazz mediamente è una canzone sola. Onestamente io qua non ce sento manco quantomeno la vecchia forma tema/cazzeggio/tema/conclusione, è proprio annamo a cazzo. Per carità quando stai nel locale fumoso jazz a New York a sentitte sta musica pagando 30 dollari un cocktail comunque è una bella esperienza. Però è una roba da ascolto? E' una roba mezza soundscape? Cioè chiaramente non c'ha niente di quello a cui diamo peso della composizione e manco la considererei improvvisazione reale perché comunque in realtà c'hai una griglia ben definita e spari fraseggi a caso dove qualunque nota tanto va bene. Direi ok i musicisti bravi, come al solito, ma basta questo? Cioè secondo me pure come jazz è scarso, cioè te senti Coltrane e so 11 minuti minimo a pezzo ma l'improvvisazione è su un altro livello, molto più musicale, molto più compositiva, questo veramente è un CD stock jazz da mette quando c'hai più di 45 anni e vuoi fa crede che sei ricco e raffinato ad una donna divorziata che hai invitato nella tua suite deluxe d'hotel sperando di trombare. Apri la porta co sto disco, la fai sedé sul divano di design e le offri dello champagne ordinato col servizio in camera. Quando parti con il "raccontami qualcosa di te" lei sa già benissimo che stai a fa però è un po' triste e disillusa e comunque fa finta che è caduta nella tua trappola da intellettuale e raffinato estimatore di musica. Cioè da una parta c'ho la stessa difficoltà del Wu Tang, però in quel caso è un fenomeno culturale che non capisco. Qui secondo me non c'è sto fattore, il fenomeno lo capisco, la musica è molto più vicina a qualcosa che posso comprendere e secondo me qua è solo fumo. La produzione è notevole per essere il '61, probabilmente è più che altro solo questione di ripresa, non è che fai sta grande produzione, però devo dire che probabilmente il suono dei dischi de sto tipo è l'unica cosa che me li fa sopportare un minimo.

L'inizio è veramente pesante ma poi si riprende quando si va su ritmi più veloci partendo da Solar in poi. Il disco lo sento molto monocorde ed è difficile distinguere un pezzo da un altro e devo dire che emotivamente non mi fa nulla. Penso che il Jazz sia stato distrutto da anni di jazzisti.

Soy nuevo en esto del jazz, así que un día no basta para dar una calificación(en general para cualquier disco en mi caso, sin embargo aun es más dificil al ser un genero desconocido para mi) sin embargo mis primeras impresiones son de asombro, es increible todo lo que puedes hacer con un piano, un contrabajo y una bateria, esos solos respectivos de cada instrumento si se sintieron, en especial el del contrabajo, me dejó embelesado.

Jazz Clásico del bueno. Todo un descubrimiento.

It's tempting to dismiss Sunday At The Village Vanguard as safe, geriatric and boring, the sort of music you would expect to hear in an upscale hotel lobby bar. But that isn't really fair--the album deserves a closer listen. In most popular (as distinguished from classical) improvisatory music, the function of the rhythm section is to lay down a groove, keep time, and provide a rhythmic and harmonic structure for the soloist to blow over. Bill Evans has had a lot of trios over the years, but this is probably the first one in which each member of the trio could and was expected to fluidly take on any role: time keeping, harmony, soloing, holding down a groove or pulse, etc. This required intense listening from all the members of the trio and is actually very difficult to do well. A close listen will reveal that the trio is communicating almost telepathically, and that the playing is exquisite, which accounts for the legendary status of this album, especially among jazz buffs. That said, if you aren't willing to put in the effort to intensively listen to this music, it will most likely come across as safe, geriatric and boring. That is why I actually prefer other recordings of the Bill Evans Trio, especially Turn Out The Stars, which was recorded shortly before Evans died. Evans pours his heart and soul into those performances with unmatched ferocity, knowing he didn't have long to live. So, how to rate Sunday At The Village Vanguard? Well, for what Evans was going for, it's pretty much perfection, an easy 5/5. However, I have to be honest--I don't really enjoy listening to it that much.

Its elevator music, but really good elevator music. Bill Evans is obviously the focal point on piano, but the dude playing bass was on some other shit. I enjoyed this music best when I focused on the bass and let the drums and piano just kinda fade a bit into the backround. Like all jazz I definitely recommend good headphones/speakers

I don't listen to a lot of jazz. I played in a jazz band in high school, and I do really like Ornette Coleman, but this didn't speak to me. It was 60 minutes of bass solos. Very, very good bass solos, but bass solos.

Well, it's jazz. Well done jazz. Would I know if it wasn't? I'd like to think so, but who knows. Honestly this album slipped by as a background track. I didn't pay special attention to it, but it was pleasing to the ear. I do not, however feel like everyone must hear this album in their lifetime.

No és complicat percebre la perícia d'Evans, la manera tan particular de juntar notes al piano, aquí amb molt més protagonisme que a 'Kind of Blue', i com de bé es complementa amb baix i bateria. No m'arriba de la mateixa manera que altres obres de jazz, però té un lloc merescut a l'Olimpe del génere

Ich bin da echt ein Schönwetter Jazzer, bzw. mag ich das anschmiegsam-entspannte des Bar Sounds wie dem des Bill Evans Trios. Und ist der Frühling etwas rauer als sonst und drischt der Hagel hart gegen die Fenster, so legen sich das dezente Piano und sein deutlich akzentuierter Bass wärmend wie ein schöner Seidenschal über den dahinplätschernden Morgen, Tag, Abend, ... Interesting album

I have always found Bill Evans to sound like "falling down" -- the sun falling down, the rain falling down, the snow falling down. What makes the Trio so transcendent is the dialogue between piano and bass with the percussion actually guiding the journey.

This was extremely pleasant background music for the stuff I was doing around the house. I was a little leery because sometimes I find the improv parts of jazz to be annoying, but this combination of instruments and chill sound worked well for me.

One of the first albums I listened to when getting into jazz. Amazing brassless jazz album. Just a piano, drums and bass and it sounds great.

Unexpectedly easy listening, super accessible and engaging. The live format works well, love the chatter and glass clinking. Even though the band's namesake is on Piano I thought the bass was way more impressive. Has got to be the world's most undercover drummer; he's somehow always there but never there. Would definitely benefit from several more listens. All Of You is the highlight. Although lots of the stuff from this era is difficult to relate to and tempting to dismiss, this exercise has made interesting to imagine what it would've sounded like to me in the context of that time in space. Also have been dishing out lots of five stars lately.

The weird thing about jazz is that I enjoy it in a live setting, but it loses a lot of it's luster when I'm listening on Spotify or whatever. Just not the same.

I haven't listened to a lot of jazz in my life, but I've really enjoyed listening to this album. I think the recent release of Pixar's Soul is influencing me right now, but I now have an interest in learning some music theory to better understand and appreciate jazz

Live Album... und dann auch noch Free Jazz oder was? Ich versteh die Art von Musik einfach nicht. Die Musiker spielen so ein bisschen vor sich hin und manchmal fängt einer (oder sogar mehrere) an, hektisch Töne aneinander zu reihen, die nicht sonderlich harmonisch zueinander wirken, teilweise sicherlich bewusst disharmonisch sind und nicht in einem ersichtlichen Zusammenhang zu den restlichen Musikern stehen. Wieso? Ist es eine Herausforderung so zu spielen? Bestimmt! Obwohl es genauso gut auch willkürlich sein könnte. Ich höre es ja nur ein einziges mal. Ist es schön zu hören? Für mich definitiv nicht. Grausig! Keine harmonischen Melodien! Kein erkennbares Zusammenspiel! Was soll das? Und dann klatschen die Schafe im Publikum aus ihrem Herdentrieb am Ende der Performance, weil sie von irgend jemanden gehört haben, dass die Musik sehr gut sei. Damit verspielt sich das Album die letzten Armutspunkte.

Relaxing record!

Fred Armisen has a great bit on when your mind starts to drift while listening to jazz. While I enjoyed this, it was mostly background music while I was working and working on my Vietnamese. Favorite track: "My Man's Gone Now"
