Reviews (page 12 of 12)

This is the third jazz album I've gotten so far. I gave both of the previous albums 3/5 stars, so I was expecting something similar here, but unfortunately I absolutely hated listening to this album. Musically, it's fine and would make for fitting background music at a bar. Plus, the musicians playing on this album are clearly all very talented, as improvisational music like this requires a great deal of skill. But I did not enjoy listening to it. I think there are some great jazz recordings out there, but this kind of jazz, specifically the piano-bass-drum trio that this album showcases, is really not for me. I don't feel like I heard anything new from this recording that I haven't heard a thousand times before. Every track has an extended bass solo, and very rarely do they contain something worth listening to. A lot of upright bass solos end up sounding more like random glissandos and random discordant notes, and this album is no exception. At the very least, the drum solos usually give you something more interesting to listen to, as they're typically the only time a track will break away from the groove it's stuck to for the last six minutes, but even they tend to go on a while longer than they should. This is the first album on the list I considered not finishing, and I only pushed through because I realised the last four tracks on Spotify were all repeats, so I only had one left to listen to. Listening to any more of this sounds unbearable. Favourite song: Jade Visions, I guess? It reminds me a bit of Kitchenware and Candybars by Stone Temple Pilots

Music for coffee shops and lifts. To be fair I enjoyed this a bit more once I realised that there were multiple takes of the same song. I felt like I was losing my mind a bit and that the songs were just twice as long. I'm sure this is great if you're into it but I'm just not. Playlist track: Jade Visions - Live At The Village Vanguard, 1961 / Take 2

I don’t generally care for jazz. I particularly dislike this kind of jazz.

el jazz de blancos me recuerda a Woody Allen. Nada más que añadir

Why tho?

Not for me.

Impressively boring zzz

Well it’s jazz, I was never going to be bothered about it.

I'll die on the hill that jazz is nothing more than people dicking around on instruments.

Boring. Bill Evans’ biography is way more interesting than his music.

Only music

Not my kind of music

so boeing, im a lyrics girl

Não curti nem um pouco, album sem emoção nenhuma e com violão repetitivo. 1/10

Ugh jazz.

Might be just because it’s jazz but every song sounded the same.

First listen

tried to find it interesting, sadly couldn't

bro this has no lyrics AND I'M A LYRICS PERSON

01) Gloria's Step (take 2) - 3,0 02) My Man's Gone Now - 3,0 03) Solar - 2,0 04) Alice in Wonderland (take 2) - 3,0 05) All of You (take 2) - 3,0 06) Jade Visions (take 2) - 3,0 TOTAL: 2,83 (28/100) Current ranking: 779/788 God, I hate jazz...

BORING

I appreciate the talent. But it's almost unbearable to sit through.

I respect it but did not enjoy it even a little bit.

This is the most mundane music ever. There's nothing interesting about it at all. I wouldn't want this even playing in an elevator. There is nothing cool or special about this album. It's just some instruments being played in the simplest way possible. I wish I could like this, but I just don't at all.

Too much piano

Just instrumental… it was good background music for a very chaotic Trader Joe’s run

not my type of music

Only listened to a bit of this bc I don’t think I need to listen to an hour of jazz piano

Didnt finished the whole album. Listened to like five and didn't want to anymore

Plunky. The weird bass solo mix kills it for me. And it’s on everything.

Left almost no impression at all.

I really tried to like this but I just can't follow it. Each instrument sounds fantastic but I struggle not knowing what is coming next in the music.

This just sounds like lifeless elevator music to me.

Find ich anstrengend. Das ist dieser Jazz wo alle Noten gleichzeitig gespielt werden und andauernd unharmonische Töne eingebracht werden. Nicht meins

Not for me

p53. 1961. 1 star Jazz :( Background music for cocktail bars. Well played but... meh. "Nice"

This is a bit unfair on the score as it’s just not my taste.

I tried. I really did.

Ei tuo slow jazz vieläkään ole minun lempimusiikkia mutta aina annetaan tilaisuus!

I‘m convinced of the musicians ability to play their instrument. Jazz is not for me though, so the review only reflects how much I enjoyed listening to it - my ear couldn‘t even distinguish between songs.

Can appreciate the musical aspect of this album but can't say its really for me. Feel like I need a bottle of red wine in a basement club somewhere to fully enjoy it. Don't think I would listen again and no playlist additions. But on the plus side it will likely be part of a small amount of albums I was able to read my book at the same time.

Waiting room, elevator, background GT7 menu music vibes. not my cup of tea but very chilled. harder to complete than a clean lap at nords.

Felt like was in boring dream

How about you learn how to sing, nerd

It’s live jazz

Nicht mein Genre!

Jazz 🤮

I tried, but it's just... Nothing.

You could not pay me to be interested in this sort of slow, toothless jazz. I know jazz is an art form that I am not privy to. I wish I got it but this one… was such a hard listen. Bored to tears. Worst thing an album can be for me

Good but dull can only go so far, and apparently this is the limit.

I'm not into jazz

Zuhause, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Lockt mich nirgendwo hervor.

Jazz time My man's gone now: yeah he left cuz he doesn't like jazz. I think I'll join him. Really I like jazz up until the annoying solos where it just sounds like they're plucking whatever note they want. I'm sure there's some big grand design that I don't understand because I don't know jack shit about music theory, but I do know what sounds good, and that ain't it chief. All of you: this is very jazz I hope we get an enjoyable album soon. Something that is just nice to listen to. Something I'd be excited to hear again Glorias step take 3: I hate bass solos

noooooooooooooooooooooooo this is not for me. every song sounds identical. help i'm trapped in a live jazz hell!!

'Solar' has a near 4-minute bass solo. Unfortunately, it's not an outlier. I don't care what your chosen genre of music is, but a bass player cannot be given the limelight for 4 straight minutes. There is no way it will end well. This history is important, given the bass player died a few days after recording this. He sounds like he created possibilities for some that followed. But being influential doth not being listenable make. When the band is working together and Evans' clearly exemplary piano work is present keeping structure and meaning, it is pleasant. But the incessant 'countermelodic' bass solos are unbearable. It seems a lifeless affair to me. And on the recording I've heard, it sounds like the audience agreed.

Piano and some cello, that's about it. Boring

This album, and this this style of Jazz, isn't to my taste. It doesn't stir any positive emotions or reactions. I found it rather dull. 1⭐ Would I listen again? No. Would I buy this album? No. Side one 1. "Gloria's Step" - 1 2. "My Man's Gone Now" - 1 3. "Solar" - 1 Side two 1. "Alice in Wonderland" (take 2) - 1 2. "All of You" (take 2) - 1 3. "Jade Visions" (take 2) - 1 Total - 6 Average - 1

Snark.

Missed out on the killers and had to listen to this. G fucking G

Jazz albums like this just don't work for me unless I'm in a bar.

Listened to like half, got bored. Hate to say I never feel the jazz vibe throughout my day.

Boring pretentious scotch bar vibe Not my thing

no es mi rollo

While technically very good and played to a high level, I cannot stress how little interest I have in this. I would say im not alone as you can hear people in the background have conversations and ignore the playing.

Couldn't make it through the album, the off timing is at times dreadful.

I. HATE. JAZZ.

I would be ok with this in certain settings as it is very inoffensive. Something nice enough to listen to in between conversation at a bar. But I wouldn’t have to focus an hour worth of attention on. I don’t have any interest in listening to an hour of that nonstop. There is a reason why this music is left at hotel lobby’s, and bars. It’s not meant to hold your attention for a long period of time.

Album very Jazz. Contains much sound. It is rated.

It's jazz. I don't get it, but I don't think it's good.

Honestly...hot garbage. Not even enjoyable background music, as there are constantly two or more instruments clashing. And yet there's 68 minutes of this. Was gonna be generous and leave a 2, out of respect for it being somewhat listenable, but one of the few albums I genuinely just had to call it quits on. If you heard one song on this album, you've heard em all.

Jazz instrumental

Says nothing to me.

👎🏻 jazz

Ehhh a trio with no brass doesn’t do it for me. Favorite Track: Jade Visions

I don’t like gin and tonic. Mainly because I don’t like the taste of gin and don’t like the taste of tonic. Friends will always ask me to try theirs as apparently “it’s the best one yet”. It never is. This is how I feel about Jazz. This album was at the lower end of Jazz. Really hurt to listen to. Like my 6 year old daughter had found an instrument and attempted to play it.

There is a time and a place for good Jazz, unfortunately none of which apply to this album

It’s getting 1*, and it should be grateful.

I didn't hate Alice In Wonderland but I clearly don't understand the appeal of jazz. 1/5

Not for me

i dont like jazz sorry

I don't doubt there is talent on display there, but Freddie hates jazz.

Sounds like three different people all doing their own thing. Not sure what I’m missing here but it genuinely sounds like kids playing random notes at the same time. Horrible.

Utterly lost on this one, I just don't get jazz. It's boring, it's scattered, no rhyme or reason and it's boring. Not an album I could possibly listen to for one hour and 8 minutes if my life depended on it. It sounds like what you expect to hear in the lounge on the old folks cruise ship. Do you dance to it or just talk over it? Wow, I tried, it's just boring and meandering background music. One star from me but this is like trying to teach a 3rd grader physics, it's beyond my understanding or comprehension.

This one really was not for me. I know this album is considered a landmark live jazz recording, and I can appreciate the technical skill on display, but as a listening experience it does very little for me. The improvisation feels loose and meandering, and I struggle to find a clear hook or melody to latch onto. After a while, it all blends into one continuous wash of piano, bass and drums. At best, it works as background music, but even then it is not something that leaves a lasting impression on me. I understand why jazz fans might love the intimacy and interplay, yet it simply does not connect with me in the way other genres do. Favourite track: I genuinely could not pick one, as nothing stood out enough. Least favourite: The overall sound just never grabbed me. Album artwork: A classic black and white jazz cover. Understated and serious, much like the music itself

I don't like jazz.

actual genuine elevator music ): 1/5 stars.

Skipped after the first track. I appreciate the skill in jazz, it's just not for me

I believe this is what it would have sounded like if when I tried to play instruments for the first time in my life I was given a random jazz song and asked to replicate it

Better than that Miles Davis nonsense the other day. I prefer piano based Jazz, but not enough to elevate the score any higher than the 1 star.

What the hell was that? Best live Jazz album ever? No it can't be. The only way I will ever listen to this again is on vinyl, with all the grooves glued up.

It's jazz. Piano, Drums, Bass. It's also a live album, and for some reason they decided to add multiple takes of the same song on the album. I already don't like jazz, and it all sounds the same to me, and then you put two takes of each song on the album with no discernable difference? That's just confusing. Sorry man. You're talented, but I hope I never have to listen to you again.

No thank you. Such dross. There may be technically impressive music here, but I can't for the life of me imagine how anyone could possibly sit and listen to it.

3/10. Gosh, I feel really bad for saying this. I really like jazz, but this album is just not for me. While reading this album's reviews, I kept thinking to myself "Did we even listen to the same album at all?". This is only the 217th album that the generator gave me, but I've already listened to over 1,000 (all of the albums from the 2016 edition of the album compilation, and almost all of the albums per se), and this is the only jazz album that I recall actually disliking. I don't get it. I don't like it.

It must have been recorded live but the crowd noise was so distracting it was not a pleasurable headphone listening experience.

I know this is probably unfair as these people are great musicians, but I have a bias against piano jazz music. I think it's from listening to too much NPR over the years. It just grates on me.

What's with all the 5 star reviews? This is a lot of self-indulgent noodling and boring. Why do they need to put 4 of the tracks down twice? Even they know it's not good and felt they could do better. Oof.

dogpoo

Boring

I really am trying to like jazz. It’s not workint

Don't care for jazz 1/5

Oh heck no

live albums are rarely good and this was undeniably the worst one we've had. as far as jazz goes, this wasn't as bad as i was expecting, but the whole experience was not good. learning that recording a live album at the village vanguard with light dinner conversation in the background of all your songs is a rite of passage for jazz artists was upsetting.

mm, not to be a jazz hater, i just don't want to listen to an hour of elevator music back to back

Jazz is not my stuff.

Ich kann diese Platte nicht hören. Jazz.

I have been trapped in this elevator for 68 minutes. Please send help.

I have no time for jazz so 1 star or F.

I am not a jazz guy.

For the people who enjoy this style of jazz, I'm sure this is a great album, but I find this style of jazz blends into the background and I don't absorb it. Just not my thing!

Nicht meine Richtung

Jazz sucks, but with that in mind I still especially hated this. So dull. Music to wander a Barnes and Noble to.

1. gloriaz - 1 2. man - 1 3. zolar - 1 4. alice - 1.5 5. you - 1.5 6. jade - 0 7. gloria - 1

3/10 This is the epitome of “not for me”. Piano jazz, well played and recorded, but terminally, brutally boring. Meandering lounge music with no hint of noticeable distinct songs or melodies. Rough.

not my music old jazz

Dull boring derivitive jizz No! I'd rather listen to cats playing on a piano. Is there a person alive that remembers that Sunday at the Village Vanguard? I doubt if anyone recalled this performance day the following week!

couldn't hack the whole thing, too samey!

Oh fuck off. Jazz again? This degenerate filth needs to stop. Play some real fucking music, you wanker.

I don't even talk about that...

Jazz :(

Too snooze-fest for me

Jazz is the equivalent to musical mental illness.

Sunday at the Village Vanguard offers a challenging listening experience. The album often feels disjointed, with each musician seemingly playing a different tune, resulting in a chaotic and discordant atmosphere. The bassist sounding like they are tuning up, the drummer's erratic rhythm sounding like a rainmaker, and the piano playing that resembles hotel lobby music left me feeling disoriented and disconnected from the music. There is a lack of cohesion and structure, making it difficult to engage with the performance on a deeper level. While some may appreciate the avant-garde nature of the album and its experimental approach to jazz, I found it frustrating and inaccessible. Tracks like Gloria's Step and Alice in Wonderland exemplify this disjointedness, with some moments of beauty overshadowed by moments of confusion. Overall, Sunday at the Village Vanguard may appeal to those with a penchant for avant-garde jazz, but for me, it feels like an exercise in musical chaos rather than a cohesive artistic statement. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None

first listen. not my thing.

Dull background music.

Evidently, we’re not old enough to like jazz yet. That was an hour and eight minutes of one song. (There are actually three songs on the album twice, which leads us to think there aren’t enough good jazz songs so they had to repeat a few of them.) The album is good background music during martinis and dinner at a classy restaurant. The drinks and dinner brought it up to (1.2*s)

Jazz, trio, instrumental, jam, solo on solo, the bass is killing me, not catching me. puh - not at all...

This album might be alright if you're 85+ years old or currently standing in an elevator. Listening to a recording of live, improvisational jazz will never stand up to being there in person so a lot is already lost there. This type of playing takes a lot of focus, adaptation, and listening on the musicians' parts so I'll give it that. I did like that there were no horns and the bass was a star player at parts throughout. However, this was just too boring and repetitive for me. Meh 1.5.

Ok Daddio...I'm truly perplexed. A guy strumming a rubberband, raw spaghetti on cymbals, and Bill hitting his piano with a shoe. What a complete discombobulated mess. Seemed like each guy was off just doing their own thing. I doubt the audience even knew there were multiple takes on some songs. Hard pass

I guess it can be nice to hear one of these songs while relaxing every now and then. But to hear multiple songs and even multiple takes is so completely redundant an unnecessary. Surprisingly, I wasn't there in 1961 but I'm not sure what the crowd sees in this. Evidently this is peak jazz? It's entirely possible I just listened to the same song 6-10 times in a row. I'm not sure I would have noticed a difference if any of these songs was put on repeat and someone told me I listened to this album. The first bass solo is somewhat refreshing and cool I guess? After that its all just the same baloney for an hour. 0.10 stars

hard going-- not a jazz fan and this seems like the worst type to me.

Jazz like this has a place but it's not in my ears

Not all jazz is good jazz. Too uncohesive for me.

Piano y poco más instrumentos para interpretar canciones instrumentales sin que destaquen especialmente. Para muy de los que les guste el estilo

Jazz… ugh

Quite a miserable listening experience. It sounds like Jazz x Jazz for Jazz musicians. Continuous atonal wankery for the sake of wankery. No structure, no interesting drum-work, just constant piano and bass solos. And it doesnt go anywhere. Even some of the more obnoxious albums on here had something going. I could, for instance, recommend the Klaxons to someone that likes pop rock, or Neneh Cherry to someone who longs for 80s pop (I consider both these albums to be the worst albums I have heard in my life, quite frankly), but this? I suppose, as I said in the beginning, it might be interesting to Jazz musicians, but its unlistanable to 99.9% mortals, and its not even entertaining as a "wowza groundbreaking!" album either.

Just not my preferred style of music.

They say that, in jazz, the notes you don't play are the important ones. This is definitely true, as the bass player here elected not to play any notes that weren't a little bit sharp.

Livealbum igjen

Elevator Music

I'm sure these guys are great but I almost fell asleep at the wheel listening to this album. One star for safety

Maybe it just is not for me

Too similar to each others

Possibly the most painful jazz album I’ve had to sit through thus far. I’m sorry, I just don’t get it. It’s so boring.

This is the first album I gave up on. Really not a fan of jazz.

so bad

Good background music. Boring otherwise

Nice idea, let's get one of the greatest bass player (at the time) and let him play against the rhythm of other members. Interesting concept, full steam ahead! For some reason this album reminded me of a video of Pablo Picasso I have seen, where he was painting a bird in a childish way. We all know he is great and extremely talented, so he can now do whatever he wants, it will all amuse us anyway, doesn't matter how stupid it is. Well, Bill Evans Trio members were great and very talented, and together they came up with this unlistenable album, that is giving me heart palpitations from all the wrong reasons. Great milestone in history, there are no rules in music anymore, hurray!

I'm not a jazz fan. As far as I'm concerned this is one long song with no melody or changes.

Just not my jam

Dull as hell

Not a Jazz head - tolerated this

I mean, do I really have to say why this is a classic?

Imagine being at the club in NYC while the Bill Evans Trio is belting out this classic 🎶 you'd get some of the best sleep of your life right in that club 😴

Nice piano, but I didn't like the drumming or bass. The worst part is the mix which has too much high end and all of the most annoying sounds are far too present. At one point all i could hear was a cymbal making constant noise.

Not a fan of jazz noodling. Especially jazz piano noodling. Was completely inoffensive is about the most complimentary thing I can say about this.

Refused to listen. Turned to the Surrey cricket ball-by-ball feed instead.

Not my thing.

Annoin mahdollisuuden neljän puolikkaan biisin verran. Ei muuta sitä tosiasiaa, että tämä on popmusiikin banaalein, itsetiedostavin ja rahvaan mukahumoristisin muoto.

Look, I’m not the biggest jazz fan, but even relative to the genre this feels very boring.

I'm sure it's good, but maybe I just don't like jazz?

I got bored instantly, it's just very repetitive. No vocals. Literally sounds like elevator music. Sounds like it would play as background music in a curious George episode. If you are going to make music with no vocals, you have to make the instrumentals sound interesting showing that there is no need for vocals or lyrics.

Gloria's Step 2 - 2 stars My Man's Gone Now - 3 stars Solar - 1 star Alice in Wonderland 2 - 1 star All of you 2 - 1 star Jade Visions 2 - 2 stars Gloria's Step 3 - 1 star Alice in Wonderland 1 - 1 star All of you 3 - 1 star Jade Visions 1 - 2 stars

3,8 I don't care for this album. Musically impressive but just no

Boring

Not for me. First one I couldn't make it through the entire album. Just a no for me.

mellow bass and piano solos aren't my thing. 2/5 for the music. 1/5 because the random click / door opening / murmuring on the album kept scaring the shit of out of me. home invader?! party in my front yard?! someone sneaking up behind me?! recommended for: live music in an upscale department store

Agh it is hard to find words, I just don't care about this tinkling kind of jazz. It just irritates me

I hate jazz so much.

kakuhka

Boring easy listening jazz. Not my cup of tea at all

glad apple let me know this was a live album.

I don't like no-words songs

Really shit.

Jazz ...

Serieuze Jazz. Leuk voor een paar minuutjes, maar daarna haak snel af. *

I don't like jazz

It might be a great Jazz record. But's it Jazz

Look we all know I’d have given this a one whether I’d listened or not

Jazz piano, no thanks

Nice. What a avant garde way of doing things, stick the same song on twice in a row and see if you can drive your audience insane. Spaz jazz.

Zzzz...boring!

Ik heb het geprobeerd.....2,5 nummer lang.....en toen begon het Jazz-eczeem weer op te spelen in mijn nek.

I just can't be doing with this type of jazz. It's annoying

Couldnt do it - piano based jazz just not my thing I guess

neeeeeeeeein - 1

not my thing

killed my mood for today, wtf elevator music. Not outside of an elevator plz!

Grausig! Keine harmonischen Melodien! Kein erkennbares Zusammenspiel! Was soll das? Und dann klatschen die Schafe im Publikum aus ihrem Herdentrieb am Ende der Performance, weil sie von irgend jemanden gehört haben, dass die Musik sehr gut sei. Damit verspielt sich das Album die letzten Armutspunkte.

I am watching you.
