Neil's voice also just doesn't do it for me. will rate 3 stars from now on if I would choose to listen to this album again in future, 2 if would not choose to listen to this album except circumstances (recognizing that an album is representative of a genre etc) 1 star is will never listen again.

I love Neil Young, but so far the albums that have come up I've found to be alright or very much one or two excellent tunes and then some filler. This album however, was solid through and through. Neil's in rock mode here, less folk and some serious jams on the two long songs. Cinnamon Girl is a banger, but was surprised how much I recognized among the other songs. Definitely an album I would pick up.

I get why other people like Neil Young. And if I started writing music, it'd probably sound a lot like Neil Young. And it's not bad! But it's catch-and-release fishing. Hooks are good, but the songs meander, solos don't have direction, and they lose me 3 minutes into a ten minute(!) song.

It's Neil. It's great. Loved every second of this album - it's got a bit more rock than folk to it I feel.

A lot more folk than Rust Never Sleeps, didn’t catch my attention but was pretty unmemorable.

This was a solid album, a great mix between country folk, rock, and a hint of Americana. I enjoyed all the songs, they all kind of hit you in different ways.

Masterpiece

Essential Neil Young album, one of the five best records of his lengthy career by almost all (different) counts out there (and the first one of them, chronologically speaking). *Cinnamon Girl*, the title track, and the long "Down By The River" and "Cowgirl In The Sand", with their epic guitar soloing and hypnotic repetitions, are just the stuff of legend. But even a less known cut such as the borderline-psychedelic post-apocalyptic country number "Running Dry", with its evocative and ominous fiddle in the background, is worth the detour here. Five stars, obviously. It's fine, drones on a bit and made me really want to curl up and take a nap. I mean, that's not entirely a bad thing, I like naps.

cinnamon girl clears tbh Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) IS VERY LONG AND SHOULDNT BE nah the chorus kinda brings it back actually down by the river is a bop but why is it so long it was short but also a lot longer than it should've been. lyrics were forgettable at best but instrumentals fuckin bop. solid 7/10

This was a really enjoyable album. Compared to other Neil your albums I felt like this one was more concise and flowed well together. With only 7 songs I enjoyed more than half. The folky rock sound is where I feel Young does his best work. 7.6/10

I think this is the second Neil Young album that I've gotten so far. I'm not a huge fan of the sound of his voice, however he does make some enjoyable music. He's the quintessential folk rock artist.

I thought he'd be too folky for me. With this album, I was genuinely surprised, I thought it was really good - great musicianship. I'll need to re-listen in future, I suspect it's a constant grower. An optimistic 4 from me.

Took me a while to listen bc it wasn't available on Spotify, but boy, do i regret taking so long... Bluesy country-rock that only late 60's/mid 70's could provide. The title track is the one that stands out the most for me, but the album as a whole is quite an experience.

It is 2022, Neil Young managed to make the news as though the world was going to care about his catalog being available on Spotify. This album's unavailability makes that regrettable as far as convenience regarding this list of 1001, but for whether or not the world cannot move on without Neil Young's music being available digitally is a rather far fetched position, but not for him apparently. Perhaps someone told him a long time ago that he is the best musician, song-writer, to ever grace the music scene. He has obviously believed this about himself. Through the aforementioned lens, there are pre-judgments against the man that skew the acceptance of his music. There is history with CSN and his disruption of the trio, the familial discord that he seems to believe is a disservice to fans (it is) but it is this same out of touch with reality approach to himself that overshadows his talent, and by extension is out of touch with the consumer. Normally this would not be a problem, but Young does try to connect through activism and use of his platform. This album could be a good one. It is an easy listen, the songs are nice and Neil Young does have talent. His ability to achieve what he has is a testament to that, and this review will not deny him that. Where this album fails to connect is the historical pretentiousness of Neil Young, perhaps it was the pursuit of success and the brutal acquisition of it that paints the picture. Thing is, it is the opinion of this review that this album does not meet even minimally the requirement before death. We love our entertainers lest they become too self-important, and Neil Young has become the latter.

A nice, chill album. I was not familiar with any of the songs on this album but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. That is the one problem with the random album a day. I don't really take the time to listen to the album thoroughly. Maybe I will have to start reading about the albums, at least those I am not familiar with, and see if there is a theme like that previous album or at the minimum just to have some background information.

Cinnamon Girl and Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere are a goo pair of openers, by Down By The River is 9 minutes about nothing. Again I don't get why so many people have a hard on for this sound. Cowgirl In The Sand is 10 minutes of bullshit.

I really liked this album. Very chill but with some upbeat songs mixed in. Very easy listening. Good to chill to.

A little bit country, folk, blues and rock’n roll. It’s no doubt that Neil Young is a great singer/songwriter. It’s not really my style, but my hats off to him and the obvious influence he’s had on may others musicians due to his own musicianship.

Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River and Cowgirl are three monster songs and are so good that the rest of the tracks could be Justin Bieber songs and the LP would still get a 5.  Now I'll digress: In 1985 I saw Neil during the Canadian National Exhibition. He was touring in support of his Old Ways LP, a country album that nobody bought. He had a 500 lb fiddler who easily bowed his weight and lit up the country songs. As soon as we heard the opening chords to  Down by the River, my buddy Rick (RIP) and I immediately thought the same thing: What on earth is the 500 lb fiddler going to do during this song? We quickly concluded the best bet was that he would  skip out to the CNE's Food Building; after all he had a good 15 minutes.  But nooooo. He stayed on stage  and bowed something that wasn't too interruptive while the rest of the boys kicked it hard. 

When you compare this LP to Harvest or After the Gold Rush you can see the transformation of Neil Young's sound when he played with Crazy Horse. The production is sludgy and the playing is loose, more like a live recording. I like it when they say that many "long-time concert favourites" came from an album. These tracks usually weren't released as singles and the only way to determine that they drove album sales was to go and witness the live audience reaction after the first few notes. In this case we have Down by the River & Cowgirl in the Sand that fit that definition, not to mention Cinnamon Girl, but that was a single and not 10 minutes long. Fortunately for us, due to CanCon, we heard these songs more on the radio than the rest of the world.

Neil Young really knocks it out of the park with this album with three incredible songs: Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand. I like the other country/folk songs less but when he rocks out there's nothing like it. The guitar counter play and solo on Cowgirl is simply brilliant and iconic Young.

I listed to Neil Young’s self titled debut before this, and like, I really like Neil Young’s music, but sometimes the way he sings deadass sounds like Carl Wheezer still I really liked both the debut album and this one this album does have some songs I didn’t really like but the grand majority of the album slaps and I think it makes up for a mediocre song here and there overall 9/10, a classic in folk/rock history

One of the better Neil Young albums on the list, Cinnamon Girl is very good, Down by the River strong, it's a tight listen with a groove. Shame there's just way too much of his work overall. 3/5.

The melancholy, the rock sound infused with the tiniest bit of country, Young’s distinctive voice. It’s a solid album, but the guitar solos feel a bit indulgent.

Classic country rock! Down by the river and Cowgirl in the Sand are staples of the genre for a good reason. The fantastic guitarplaying and Neils voice makes you wonder how the last 8 minutes of the song passed within what felt like seconds. Even after a second listen of this album it really leaves you breathless at times. This might very well be the best of Neil Young (and Crazy Horse) and deserving of the 5-star rating.

Of NY’s classic albums, this one stands the test of time. It’s funny, I forgot how good it was until I grabbed my headphones and dropped the needle (no Spotify…). Cowgirl In the Sand and Down By the River are two of my favorite songs by him. Both are long “jam” style songs with guitar solos that feel more like an attack on the guitar as opposed to a virtuoso playing juuuuust the right note at the right time. All in all, a fantastic album.

Neil and Crazy Horse at their early height here, The classic "Cinnamon Girl" and the title track which are still on Neil's Live set list are great songs and were an auger of things to come from the maestro of Country Rock and such an influence on Grunge 30 years later. Danny Whitten, (Pre the experiences that invoked another Neil Young Classic, "The Needle And "The Damage Done") on guitar and some great harmonies shows off his brilliance in these roles. "Down By The River" is another great track and a classic in the genre, again Crazy Horse were the right people at the right time for Neil 1969 and still are today even though their have been many iterations he always gets the right people to play/sing with him. The final track, "Cowgirl In The Sand" another classic Neil Young standard, again highlighting his influence on both (Believe or not) on Punk and Grunge music. A great Album rightfully on this list. I love it!

Favorites: Everybody Knows This is Nowhere Down By the River

The songs here are generally simple and pleasant. Mostly basic stuff though. I found youngs voice to be a bit ‘take it or leave it’. Some of the songs don’t really seem to ‘go anywhere’. Nevertheless this album was enjoyable and exceeded my initial expectations. Generally the longer tracks were nice and crazy horse provides some enjoyable, but not outstanding, instrumentation. Overall I think the last track ‘cowgirl in the sand’ was the best of both young and crazy horse on this album. Overall I feel three stars is appropriate. This is a good album, but I could live without it (as I might have to thanks to that fuss with Spotify!)

Some of my all time favorites here, and of xourse the two lengthy linchpin numbers of Down By the River and Cowgirl in the Sand. A coue of dull spots hold it just shy of masterpiece status for me but still essential.

Sigh. Can't get it on Spotify. Which fair enough, I guess, I appreciate his taking a stand. Hopefully YouTube is giving me approximately the right thing. I know the standard Neil Young stuff, but I've never considered myself a particularly big fan. I do like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young so there's that. Starting with the name and album art I'm slightly put off, but only slightly. It doesn't look like it rocks, if you know what I mean. And what's up with that pose? Starts out very strong with Cinnamon Girl, an undeniable hit. The title track is fine but Round & Round is yuck. I am used to thinking of his voice as wise/angry old man voice; it is interesting that he sounded exactly the same 50 years ago. Anyway, Down by the River is a great song. This much madness is too much sorrow. The Losing End is chill, I kind of liked it, Running Dry no thank you (unless I happen to be watching Firefly at the same time), Cowgirl in the Sand feels really old fashioned but I guess is fine. Overall a 2 start meh but Cinnamon Girl is definitely worth a star. This helped me find the 1001 Album Club podcast (https://open.spotify.com/episode/7AGyTZ3FeLBXs72wJQP6xM?si=ybGYS6UySVuxTmsYw2QYxg) plus some great covers of Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand.

Sorry Neil, I tried. I like Neil a lot more than I like Neil's music. There are some absolutely priceless songs in here but then there's... the rest of the album. Just not my thing.

It’s okay.

Neal Young is stretching his legs on his second post-Buffalo Springfield solo disc. His first collab of many with Crazy Horse is a great peak into where he will take his music. His songwriting stands out here - Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River, The Losing End… etc are all sonically not something that you'd think a singer / songwriter would put out in 1969. This popped up on the tail end of NYs battle with Spotify, and I'll repeat what I said last week with an Eric Clapton selection, it's okay to seperate the asshole from the music when they take stands you don't agree with. 4/5.

Bit ironic I got this a week after the Neil Young vs Joe Rogan fiasco so had to watch this with ads on YouTube. This situation at this time is still going on so was intrigued to see if I would miss the music that disappeared from Spotify. From this album at the very least, Young feels missed as I would love to have some of these songs saved. The acoustic and electric guitar parts are really good throughout too. I was reading the wiki article for this and found out Young wrote half the album while having a fever. And those songs (Cinnamon Girl, the title track, Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand) are the best on here. The rest are ok but not as good. A very decent and fine little album.

Decent but not what I want out of a rock album such as this

Lovely, and just the right amount of moody

I thought i didn’t like him based on his last album (déjà vu). but this was okay. it started off strong with cinnamon girl and gradually got eh, but it was fun and i didn’t hate it.

It seems like there's often very little middle-ground on Neil Young. There are those "NEIL!" fans (or my wife who will no question be singing Cinnamon Girl the rest of the day after this is playing ha) and then those who think Neil's voice is a bit of a non-starter to say the least. Of course I'm taking the easy way out and staking a little middle-ground here but I think this album is a pretty good listen even for those who might "hate" Neil. You've got some good heavy rock starting off with the aforementioned "Cinnamon Girl" followed up with a nice easy rocker in the title track. "Down By The River" is one of those old-time 'holycow this is creepy' songs, which I like. And sticking to this song in particular...for the most part I kind of enjoy his voice on this album - although if anything I often find his electric guitar work (solos) more than a bit harsh and difficult to get through. But on the other hand it's also his unique *sound* and as much as you could always tell an Edward Van Halen guitar part you can do the same for Neil Young. That counts for something significant I think. Another album that I like the overall sound of - you can definitely hear the space in this one, even in the louder songs - a dry production that's somehow not annoying. The album peters out a little for me on the (former) second side - I'm not as much a fan of the country and slow/plodding feel on songs like "The Losing End" and "Running Dry" which knocks it down a notch. Anyways as a "yeah sure Neil Young is alright" kind of music fan this is a decent album - relatively short and with some undeniably important/classic songs that still sound good. 7/10 3 stars

Maybe Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, but if this is nowhere, that is where I want to be. It is the best album of Neil Young. As Neil has made so many classic albums, this one is really special. Of the seven songs of this album only "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)" is a good song. The other six songs are even far better and all classics. Also the performance of Neil and his band is of the highest level. His vocals on "The Losing End (When You're On)" are his most fragile ever and the guitar work on "Cinnamon Girl", "Down by the River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" is legendary.

The more I listen to Neil Young the more I like him. Haven't listened that much - yet

Nice album

A 5-star album, easily: it is one of these absolute classic albums on the list and one of these timeless albums that stay good no matter how many times you listen to it. Very influential, but most of all: great songs. Of course, the two 10-minute songs stand out but the other songs are very strong too (except for Round & Round even though it still fits).

Great blend of folk, country, and rock. Young's vocals are not the greatest, but they have character and work well within the vocal harmonies. The excellent guitar work, supported by a strong rhythm section, really draws you in and makes this album a pleasant experience overall.

I MEANNN. This is not my first time listening to this album. It is solid and it is fairly hype but not TOO hype because Young has a pretty chill voice. Good guitar and background music.

Great background music. No immediate standout tracks, but Cinnamon Girl reminds me of Trip Shakespeare. Seems a little more upbeat than what I remember from Harvest (listened to it years ago though). 3/5.

Neil Young is easily the most overrated artist on this whole list. He's an awful singer, a boring musician, and a mediocre songwriter at best. This is some of the most vanilla, cardboard cutout, middle-of-the-road music I've ever heard. It was on track to get a bland 3 stars from me but somewhere around the middle of the album, someone started committing warcrimes with what I think was a fiddle. Hard to tell. All I know is that the atonal screeching most certainly violated the Geneva convention and should have landed Mr. young in jail for crimes against humanity. Two stars is generous.

Neil Young's second album, backed by the band Crazy Horse, released in 1969 and was remastered in 2009. This country rock album was popular even at release and has been certified platinum. 4 songs including the title track became staples for Neil to play at shows. I've heard of Neil Young but this was the first time I really listened to his music. It was fine, but not my musical genre of choice.

wonderful album, love it

2nd November 2021 Started late in the day when back from the gym. Finished on the 3rd at work in the office. Some absolute stunners (down by the river) and some slow country, beautiful stuff.

One of Neil’s best - a joy throughout and has Down by The River which is a bona fide classic

Classic. Neil knocked it out of the park with his new, grungy rock sound, and managed to balance it out with a good selection of his well established country folk sound as well. With not a single point feeling waisted here, this made for an exceptional start to what would be exceptional run of albums. Favorites: Cinnamon Girl, Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere, Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand

Cinnamon Girl. That's a great way to kick this off. Nothing grabbed me as much as that one, but these were all good, all had their own personalities. And they all had Neil's personality, which I guess is good, too. There's also a dog on the cover, so you know this album is okay, probably.

I think if I turn into an old dude who only listens to Neil Young records, it’ll probably be a very happy retirement for the most part. This one is a little light on the falsetto driven ballads that I love, but still good from start to finish.

A bit twangy.

The tracklisting on this creates a funny but fuzzy listening experience. The initial two tracks are pretty tossed-off, but then the record opens up into long-form folk jamming. From what I've heard so far, this is where Young shines. Round & Round starts like a campfire hymn, then develops vocal harmonies which primed my ears for the following song and kept me listening for them to come back. They never quite did, but that anticipation had me listening closer, including to the fiddle lines which develop late. I must admit that I wasn't engrossed, but I think I see what this music can do. The suggestion of it, at least.

Though it’s only a few songs, this album takes its time to properly build each song without overstaying its welcome. One of my favorite things is Neil Young’s strange lead guitar lines and solos. He uses interesting rhythms and accidentals in his playing that give his solos a frantic yet earnest feeling that really suits this music.

Io sono abbastanza un fan di Neil Young. Non in questo album però e comunque non c'è paragone Neil Young vs CSNY. E' noto che Neil Young non è esattamente un guitar hero e forse su questo album se la sente un po' calda. I Crazy Horse a supporto non aiutano molto quando ci stanno 10 minuti di sproloquio chitarristico che difficilmente giustificherei anche con un bravo chitarrista. Putroppo anche gli altri pezzi sono abbastanza insipidi, questo album suona più come una demo che un album completo. Comunque c'è sempre un po' la spirito del vecchio Neil e non è che m'ha fatto schifo, però è tra i suoi lavori più deboli.

Ну типа вот и хули с этим делать? 5 из 7 песен вполне себе заебись, Running Dry вообще шикарная, но пол альбома - это невыносимо скучные соляки на двух оставшихся песнях. они, кстати, были написаны в один день, когда Янг подыхал от температуры. Ну заебись, а ниче что в таком состоянии только говно можно сочинить, не? Или он себя Летовым посчитал, который якобы в трипе после укуса клеща нетленки сочинял? Так Летов пиздел, вероятно... Короче, очень выбесил этот альбом, хотел пятак лепить или что-то такое, но всё-таки 6 песня прям кайф, лан хуй с ним, пусть будет 7/10, во время соляков можно о чем-то другом подумать. Слубашельно: все песни, кроме 4 и 7 Неслушабельно: ну понятно

Fantastic album

I listened to this one 3-4 times over the course of the day yesterday.

Jangly classic rock in the chillest hippy sense. Some randomly ~long~ songs.

This is the album that established both Neil Young and backing band Crazy Horse as forces to reckon with.

I've passionately hated every Neil young album that this list has given me, except for this one. i only hate half of it. the tracks with electric guitar are pretty good, but then you have to sift past all of the whiny country stuff thats just background music for red dead redemption.

Young Neil is back and this time with a horse...and by the looks of it, a dog too...and a tree. This summer, from the producers of Neil Young's other work, Neil Young is Neil Young in: "Everyone Knows This is Nowhere". In cinemas soon.

Some of these tracks go on waaaaaaay too long

Neil Young is in the camp of Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, NIN, and Prince.

Such a unique sound. Neil Young has such a personality in his songwriting and creates an album so authentic in comparison to Dylan and his CS&N peers. This was such a cool album to explore, I can definitely see now the influence he had on grunge 2 decades later. I have been sleeping on Young!

Decent album that showcases Neil's Talent, although I would have personally preferred some more electric guitars

Decent enough. Probably got some good songs on there if listened to a few times through. But there’s plenty of Crosby Stills Nash and Young on here so doubt I’ll listen to this one again.

Liked: cinnamon girl; everybody knows this is nowhere; cowgirl in the sand. Ok: down by the river; the losing end. Didn't like: round & round; running dry (liked it at first and then it got worse and worse). Overall I wouldn't listen to this album again, although I might give the songs I liked another listen!

Every song is pretty much the same, more or less, though not...bad. It's the 60s semi-country twang feel which, if you're into that, would work. It just feels sapped of energy to me.

First 3 songs didn't really do anything for me. Last 4 were almost all great all the time.

This did not have any of the handful of NY songs I know well and there are some whoppers on here. Cinnamon Girl took me by surprise but my favourite 2 are the long ones - cowgirl in the sand and down by the river (unbelievable).

I mean, it's fine. It's a late 60's rock album. The guitar is the best thing about it. There are drums present as well as a bass. This album exists. Favorite track: Cinnamon Girl

Yeah. It's just another CSNY album. Who cares? There are like 17 of these on this list. Who in God's name cares about any member of CSNY to put them on this list more than once? This isn't even one of the more interesting albums! This list has been giving me quite a few duds lately.

Anything Neil has ever put his name on feels like sandals and unbuttoned shirt kind of weather.

For only having 7 tracks, this album still feels satisfying. One I would call a dud—“The Losing End” because I don’t like that country shuffle beat and any song that uses it—but everything else is A+. Favourite track: “Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)”

Didn't make much of an impression

This album from 1969 sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday. It's clean and dirty, relaxing and tense, all-around classic dad rock that surely paved the way for the music genre. "Cinnamon Girl" opens with clappy percussion and catchy guitar riffs. This so-called "cinnamon girl" sounds like a manic pixie dream woman who enjoys nice things in life with her man by her side. "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" is short but shares the sentiment of wanting to get away from the rat race, a feeling I'm all too familiar with... "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)" is actually quite long at 5:54 and features Robin Lane on harmonizing vocals that invokes the feeling of life slowly passing by as we try to do the things that give us purpose "Down by the River"is about 9 and a quarter minutes long and features head-nodding instrumentals from Crazy Horse that makes me want to play pool in a seedy, friendly, yokel's bar while coming together to sing along "down by the riiiiiiiver, I shot my baaaaaby" "The Losing End" is a relatable breakup song -- "my tears fall down like rain" is a classic similie that doesn't ever feel good, but we all go through it “Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)" sounds like a cry for help and somewhat of an apology letter to someone Neil Young may have wronged or let down that features powerful and woeful strings (is that a fiddle?) that feels bad but also feels quite nice "Cowgirl in the Sand" closes the album at 10 minutes and 6 seconds long and starts off with Crazy Horse setting the scene, seemingly telling the listener to "strap in" for this one. Lots of instrumental breaks that let the song tell its story with lyrics that Young wrote while suffering from a 103 degree fever about promiscuous femininity... or maybe it's really about beaches in Spain? This album is 21 years my senior and I can only sit and wonder how influential it was. As I said, it sounds like it could’ve been recorded yesterday. Fresh sound that transcends music gimmicks and pop culture, and simply ages like fine wine.

I like Neil Young. I have his "Harvest" and "Harvest Moon" albums. I think I like at least something from every one of Neil Young's colaborations, but I couldn't tell you when a song is from Neil Young & Crazy Horse, or when it's just a Neil Young song. "Cinnamon Girl" and "Down by the River" were the familiar tracks for me from this album. This felt like a solid album that I would listen to again.

Ik was indertijd erg fan van dit album. Tegenwoordig nogal wat minder... Veel uitgesponnen nummers met dito gitaarwerk, typisch NY uit die tijd.

Really enjoyed this despite personal feeling towards Neil haha. Cowgirl In the Sand is a great closer. Underrated amongst Neil songs.

Didn't realise I liked Neil Young as much as I have enjoyed the last two albums of his we have listened too so far

Was very very surprised by this. I don't really like country, but I do like rock, and this was a great fusion of the two. The choruses were pretty phenomenal Saved: Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)

Of all the Neil Young albums to pick…

Wasn't gonna listen, but it starts with Cinnamon Girl, and it's only 7 songs, so maybe I can try it. I suspect it will be lucky to get a 3, but you never know.... Naah, it's a 2. Quality is fine, but it's just too quiet and mournful for my taste. I think I like Young better than the rest of CSN, but still not really my thing. I can hear the beginnings of grunge in the sound, but still just too slow/contemplative.

Neil Young is an artist where I know all of his hits but never really listened to any of his albums all the way through so I am happy about this selection. I always meant to listen to more Neil Young. 1 - "Cinnamon Girl" - One of his hits so I of course enjoyed it 2-3 - "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" & "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)" - These two were a little to slow and sad for me today. I am working while listening so maybe the lyrics weren't sad but the music made me feel sad so there is that. 4 - "Down by the River" - another one of his hits so I enjoyed it. 5 "The Losing End (When You're On)" – okay, this is seriously depressing to me. I didn't finish it...NEXT! 6 "Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)" – OH FOR FUCKS SAKE!!! SERIOUSLY?? I DO NOT NEED THIS SHIT RIGHT NOW. I DO NOT LIKE THIS SONG AT ALL - opening verse: Oh, please help me, oh, please help me I'm livin' by myself I need someone to comfort me ANOTHER SKIP!!! 7 "Cowgirl in the Sand" – Ok, I like me some cowgirls, lets see how this goes........Pretty nice guitar intro..... I like me some guitar! Maybe this is an instrumental... nope. Lyrics are so so but I dig the guitar solos. I give this song three snausages

Depressing and a little too country

Cinnamon Girl makes this a solid 3, but outside of Everbody Knows nothing else really makes an impression. I think there is a certain time and place for this album but thats definitely not sitting in my apartment on a workday

I actually really enjoyed the guitar work on this album. I know Neil Young is a large proponent of experiencing music either love or on albums so that instead of listening to tracks of a few minutes and then moving on, you can instead enter that state of being in it. After a couple of times through the album I got lost in it. And I even repeated that final ten minute track so I could get lost in it. It's always lovely when I can take a break from my own mind.

Primer album Neil Young

Neil Young's second solo album, released only four months after his first, was nearly a total rejection of that polished effort. Though a couple of songs, "Round Round (It Won't Be Long)" and "The Losing End (When You're On)," shared that album's country-folk style, they were altogether livelier and more assured. The difference was that, while Neil Young was a solo effort, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere marked the beginning of Young's recording association with Crazy Horse, the trio of Danny Whitten (guitar), Ralph Molina (drums), and Billy Talbot (bass) that Young had drawn from the struggling local Los Angeles group the Rockets. With them, Young quickly cut a set of loose, guitar-heavy rock songs -- "Cinnamon Girl," "Down by the River," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" -- that redefined him as a rock & roll artist. The songs were deliberately underwritten and sketchy as compositions, their lyrics more suggestive than complete, but that made them useful as frames on which to hang the extended improvisations ("River" and "Cowgirl" were each in the nine-to-ten-minute range) Young played with Crazy Horse and to reflect the ominous tone of his singing. Young lowered his voice from the near-falsetto employed on his debut to a more expressive range, and he sang with greater confidence, accompanied by Whitten and, on "Round Round," by Robin Lane. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere was breathtakingly different when it appeared in May 1969, both for Young and for rock in general, and it reversed his commercial fortunes, becoming a moderate hit. (Young's joining Crosby, Stills & Nash the month after its release didn't hurt his profile, of course.) A year and a half after its release, it became a gold album, and it has since gone platinum. And it set a musical pattern Young and his many musical descendants have followed ever since; almost 30 years later, he was still playing this sort of music with Crazy Horse, and a lot of contemporary bands were playing music clearly influenced by it.

Think I might have found my new favourite Neil Young album.

It was pretty good, but I got kinda tired of those stupid background vocals by the end (like that tiny voice repeating everything he was singing)

I get why people love this so much, but just not my cup of tea

Jeez there are a lot of albums from 1969. Luckily this is a goodun. Neil manages to avoid his annoying squeaky traits and just writes solid folk rock songs. Cinnamon girl and down by the river are stone cold classics too. 4/5

3.8 - Straightforward songwriting, poetic imagery, simple but effective guitar work. Standout tracks: "Cinnamon Girl", "Round and Round (It Won't Be Long)." This feels unrushed and the songs somehow feel fresh, emotionally.

Always been into Neil. This was no "Harvest" or "After the Gold Rush," which I imagine we'll see on this list, but it still has some great Neil Young tracks on here. I only knew "Cinnamon Girl" coming into it, but that was a great demonstration of what Crazy Horse contributes to a Neil Young album. I love his folksy singer-songwriter vibe, but having Crazy Horse swoop in and add some crunch and texture to his songs really gives him some more depth and range. "Running Dry" and "Cowgirl in the Sand," were my other two standouts. Really loved the old-timey fiddle/violin on "Running Dry." I was feeling very, on the old dusty trail, with that one. Excited to see some more Neil, or a little CSNY later on this list.

Unschlüssig wie das mit 5-Sterne System adäquat zu bewerten ist; wäre eine recht mittelmäßige 5/10, also hier und jetzt 2.5, aber das hieße wohl aufrunden, aber eine 3 ?!? Neeeeeee… Leider wird’s bei aller Sympathie ne etwas magere 2.3

Neil Young: auch mal wieder so ne unerledigte Hausaufgabe, vor der ich angesichts ihrer schieren Größe und Unübersichtlichkeit immer zurückschrecke - sehr viel kenne ich von ihm gar nicht, und wo soll man halt auch anfangen? Also einfach mal mitten rein mit der erstbesten Empfehlung hier. Gefällt mir deutlich besser als erwartet, fühlt sich richtig gut an: die oft spärliche aber eigentlich immer genau richtige Instrumentierung, die Harmonien, der blubbernde Bass - und auch sein Gesang, den ich deutlich kraftvoller empfinde als das erinnerte eher dünne Fisteln (my bad!). Wohldosierter Countrysound (gern genommen: The Losing End), bluesig, nicht zu folkig (Running Dry noch am ehesten), ziemlich mit sich im Reinen - so mäandert , slidet und hallt das vor sich hin, und mit Cowgirl in the Sand kenn ich ja am Ende sogar doch einen Song! Tja und am Ende, ich bin selbst überrascht, jammen der junge Neil und Crazy Horse sich sogar über die vorher vermutete Grenze einer 3 hinaus - 3,8 darf es für diese schöne Entdeckung gern geben!

Highlight: Cinnamon Girl This is folk, exactly what you'd come to expect from Neil Young. Nothing outrageous or offensive, just good classic folk rock.
