Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

no hate to Neil Young, but kinda some hate to the list. 7 of his albums are on here. you're telling me that all 7 of those need to be included on this 1,001 list? seriously? what sets this album apart from any of the 5 that we've already listened to. this isn't particularly memorable, nor do i think it really creates a ton of influence for later artist. i do think that NY isn't getting a fair shake in this, but thats because we've had almost all of his albums in a pretty close time together. make it make sense. am i missing something?

The Neil Young and Crazy Horse albums are so much easier to handle than Neil Young’s solo works. On its own, this album is fine, I let it play and parts caught my attention, and the guitar solos at the end were solid, it just wasn’t that memorable. I’m probably only giving this a two because I’m sick of Neil Young.

After opening with the banger that is Cinnamon Girl, the album itself is average. Down By The River is a great track as well but the other 5 tracks do nothing for me. As I was listening I thought to myself, at some point Neil Young just becomes noise.

I expected way more from this album going off of the ratings... Instead I was met with a very repetitive album that is just a "I'm so miserable" soup of words. Folk is truly not my genre, I fear.

Found it to be not very interesting after cinnamon girl. The solos weren’t very inspired and thought they could have done a lot more for the how much runtime they had. Didn’t have time to look at the lyrics too deeply. Could’ve been missing something

I can tell this is probably the only Neil Young album I will even remotely tolerate. There's nothing special here, very much something your dad puts on in the car and that's your cue to pop headphones on. I mean it isn't the worst, given that Young doesn't have his signature style of vocals yet and this is a very brisk album. I just have very little to comment on, none of the lyrics are very interesting but are clearly aiming to be somewhat profound. And the production of the album is really weak. Probably doesn't help this album has been virtually wiped off all streaming except yt playlists. The guitar sections are fine, again very mid. This is peak boomer era music. Individually each track is probably bearable, decent even, but as a collection, one after the other it becomes tedious and overstays it's welcome, much like this sentence.

2/5 I'd heard a few songs by Neil Young before and I quite liked them but this album was a disappointment. I only really liked one track and the rest were pretty meh.

Well put together, but every song just refuses to end. I liked every song for the first couple minutes.

Second Neil Young and Crazy Horse album I've encountered on this list. The last one was middling, wonder what I'll think of this compared to that one. "Cinnamon Girl" sounds familiar. Feels like what I was expecting, kinda simple lyrics sung by a mediocre voice a few guitar licks but fairly forgettable. The rest of the album follows suit. I could do without the extended breakdowns in Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand, never been a huge fan of long musical interludes in the middle of other songs, see also my struggle with jam bands and/or most jazz music. I can't really see a reason why this album had to be listened to. Neil Young is a household name, but I don't find anything he's doing particularly noteworthy or ground breaking.

I don't know I didn't buy this one. There was very little here I gave a shit about, and it mostly just felt like pretty middle of the road "sad dude with a guitar" shit. He's fine, Down by the River is solid, but I just simply did not care for the most part.

Oh boy another Neil Young album. I'm sure this one won't be some of the most bland and boring folk country I've hear--Nope it is. What mediocre music Neil Young put out, if I hadn't heard songs from a room by Leonard Cohen then I'd probably think this was the most boring album yet. Entirely forgettable, next please.

Perhaps the least objectionable album, yet, from this old woman who refuses to stop screeching into a microphone and pretending to be a cow boy. The supporting band, Crazy Horse, did a good job of distracting me from the horrendous vocals of the old woman.

Outlier review alert! As a Canadian, I'm supposed to venerate Young out of national guilt. I must admit that there are a few songs - a couple on this LP - that have buried themselves into my consciousness to the point that I really thought I'd enjoy this album. Well, I enjoyed those two songs (and everyone knows which ones those are). However, if it weren't for the mystique around Young - or, say, if this were one of the, oh, 100 or so Brit pop albums I've listened to over the course of this list - I think we'd all be dissing this disc with comments about the vocals and rudimentary guitar playing. But he's an icon, and so we're expected to squeal with glee upon this album's reveal. To conclude: no squeals, no veneration, no reflexive 5 start review. Here's 2 for those 2 songs, and let's move on, shall we?

I'm sick of this dude

Not a huge Neil fan but found myself tapping my foot to the tunes, mainly up front. Running Dry is too slow and then hit some screechy notes that made me have to skip the rest of the song and reminded me why I don't pull NY as a listen. Several have some excellent stereo making it fun at work with headphones.

A bland album trying really hard to create some flavour it clearly lacks.

Pre-listening: not excited to listen to it, but I'll try to keep an open mind Cinammon Girl: boring, not much to say. Instrumentals are kind of fun, especially the guitar riffs at the end Everybody knows this is nowhere: more fun then the first, I enjoy the lyrics. The vocals are so soft, it's hard to get used to. Giving it another listen with better headphones. There's still something about the soft voice that still gets to me, but it's such a fun song. I've added it to my liked songs for now, will see if it lasts Man, the guy has so many albums Round & round (it won't be long): Vocal are much clearer, so it is posssible. Lyrics are somewhat repetitive, this one I vibe less with Down by the river: Just instrumentals lol, okay, not my vibe The losing end (when you're out): He loves a guitar riff, I like the rythm in this one Running dry (requiem for the rockets): lots of instrumentals again Cowgirl in the sand: made me sleepy This album is very much for people who love music, the theory and shit, I listen to things easier to listen to

This is the sixth Neil Young album I've listened to on this list. I think he's fine. Laid back and heartfelt, this has gotta be someone's favorite. It's just not mine. Also, naming your band Crazy Horse but refusing to kill US military leaders is poser shit.

Haven't listed to much Neil Young outside of Harvest, but this sounded pretty much how I expected it to. Not really to my tastes but not a waste of time either. Longer songs made it a little tougher to stick with but overall solid classic rock album.

This is very nice although some of the guitar solo’s go on a bit. Not an album I am likely to listen to often but pleasant enough.

Felt more like a mediocre jam band album than anything else, also whoever recorded that Yoko Ono-esque violin really wanted to ruin some all together decent tracks. Fine as background music but uninspiring, honestly I don't think the optimal listening experience even involves paying attention to the album.

I knew Cinnamon Girl. I like Neil Young’s voice, but some of these songs were really long.

I think he is better when being covered. The title track is great, but the rest falls flat for me. I have heard other tunes of his I like so I'm not sure why this is swing and a miss for me.

a whole lot of Nothing. just nothing at all to report on this one. i started it, it happened for 40 minutes, and then it ended. i don't even like actively hate it because it's not objectionable it's just.... there. i gave it a relisten and even still i have nothing to say about this. it's like there's a antimemetic field surrounding this album. it's a bit of guitar noodling while he sings about whatever over top. i find the concept of someone saying "oh yes, That's my jam right there" to be baffling.

Mostly just very boring. I didn't hate it, I think I struggled to feel anything for most of it. I think Neil Young is actually probably quite talented but I am not sure what quite leads him to this insane status where he has 7 albums on this list. Most of it is nice, fairly uneventful tunes that make you go "wait how long has this got left?" about half way through. I like the writing I guess, but I just fail to see anything too exciting here.

I really don't understand how Neil Young has 7 albums on this list. 8 if you count the CSNY album. The opening track, Cinnamon Girl, is quite good. So is track 3, Round & Round. The rest of the album was either uninteresting or actively annoying. There are two tracks on here that are over 9 minutes long. I love prog and jazz and symphonic music so I have no inherent bias against long songs. Neil Young does not do anything in his music that justifies 9+ minute songs. 1.5 stars rounded up to 2.

This is a hard album for me to review, not because it's a bad album or that it's polarizing or anything that would drive me one way or the other. The word that came to my mind when listening to it is just "eh". It's not bad, I'm just not interested in it. Neil Young is old man music. He and Crazy Horse are crazy talented, both lyrically and musically, but I just don't care enough about it. Sure, they can put some licks together, but I'm just not interested enough to enjoy it. It's fine.

There are maybe a few ear worms like Down by the river and Round and Round that I could listen to again. But his music is really not my kind of thing- very slow, quiet, almost 'thin' production wise, quite dull, and I especially did not like Running Dry.

Surprised by this one, because I like Neil Young, and I was utterly bored by this. Not sure if he hadn't really gotten his groove yet but that doesn't seem like it should be the case. Cinnamon Girl I know, everything else kind of plodded along at seemingly the same meter. Won't be revisiting this one.

While it started as a fun project to (maybe) discover some unknown albums and possibly even gold nuggets in the form of priceless music, I find this list more and more tedious. Being only at the 140th album of the 1001 I'm supposed to listen to, it seems that my musical knowledge and preferences are much better organized than this author(s)' list. Neil Young isn't helping either - or maybe not at all. I truly think this is the most overrated artist on this list, apart from, of course, Meat Loaf. This album is slightly better than "On the Beach", but that's only due to some rock jams with Crazy Horse. But as soon as they start to play country, with Neil's whining on top of that, I give up. 2/5

This album has a few moments, but mostly in my opinion, very bland. I almost begin to feel like an album like this released today, against the amazing stuff artists are doing, would not even get a look. Almost like would a basketball player from the 60’s even be able to make a modern day team? Just the feeling I get when I listen to some older albums.

Just couldn’t get behind this one. Wasn’t much to it, and a lot of the songs just strung out for too long. Thought I would like it more, but I wasn’t a fan.

Cinnamon girl is an excellent song. The perfect marraige between guitar vocals and lyrics. Immensely playable. The rest not so much. Youngs whine does not age so well and always needs to be less prominent in the mix. Here it is front and centre.

I am not a big Neil Young fan. His voice is like fingernails on a blackboard. With that being said, this album is somewhat tolerable. Cinnamon Girl was a great start and then it kind of plateaued.

background music ahh. i don't fuckin know, man, i talked about how bad dandandan season 2 was the entire time this was playing - at no point at all did the music leap out & fascinate. i've listened to jimi hendrix - i am not inherently fascinated by random people on guitar...i met the god of guitars

But then the old Neil came back with his songs somewhere between Country and Rock and Roll Solo-Guitar masturbation. What‘s hilarious is, the one song, where he is singing about killing his wife/girlfriend. And then in the next song he is crying about how hard love hit him and what a poor mf he is, now that she is gone. LOL. Fav: Cinnamon Girl

2.5 stars “Round and round and round we go” kind of summarized my feelings with this album. At times it felt like a chore. But it wasn’t terrible. I am more familiar with Neil’s popular stuff, “Heart of Gold” and “Don’t Let it Bring You Down” and “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” and such. So when I’d see this album I assumed that his earlier stuff was folky. I was surprised to find a fuzzy jam record with just one more acoustic soft song. It starts off with the 2 strongest tracks, the main ones I can recall with some time. The rest of the records, once again, isn’t bad but didn’t stand out to me. The jams were a little overindulgent, but perhaps I’m so used to this type of music for decades afterwards that I’m not appreciating what this offered in 1969? It’s possible. But for me, this album didn’t feel like a revelation.

Better than expected, but I didn't expect much. This is one of those albums that starts with a certified classic and then never comes close to reaching that high again, so the entire record feels like an anticlimax. The meandering 10 minute long closing track doesn't help.

More like Everybody Knows This Album Goes Nowhere. What is the deal with this much Neil Young on this list? There are so many other American singer/songwriters that did what he did but without sounding so whiney and one-note. So little varies from album to album with this guy. The “la la la la” singing about 35 seconds into the title track is particularly laughable. Seriously, it’s not charmingly human, it’s grating my ears. At least “Round & Round” follows that song up, which reaches redeemable levels of listenability. We gotta remove most of these NY albums PLEASE. Soft 2/5 dont make me give this man another 1/5

Solid album. Good performances from Crazy Horse, and as always very tight songwriting from Neil Young. Nothing really stuck out to me too much but it was a nice listen.

I don't understand all the love for this album. It's boring. Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) is a lie...it felt like the longest song ever on then to be followed up 9+ minute snoozer...shortly followed by another boring 10 minute track featuring 3 guitar solos which go nowhere.

Very nearly the first one I couldn't finish - just found it really quite boring and even unpleasant in places. Feels like a 4/10 if generous.

It's not necessarily bad or anything, but to me it just really bored me very quickly. I think it's a combination of how old it sounds and how limited the instrumentation is most of the time. Just really not for me

I like the raw energy of this but it just seems too spontaneous and not worked out, which apparently is typical of everything Neil Young does. Really this album could be 25-28 minutes long as the solos in Down By The River and Cowgirl are needless and unfocused, Running Dry and Round and Round (It Won't Be Long) are much longer than they need to be... again, like the energy but feels too unrehearsed.

I found this to be quite dull. My favourite track was “Down By The River” but after being served up Herbie Hancock’s “Head Hunters” yesterday, this ten minute song with solos-galore felt like child’s play.

More Neil Young, great. This at least is while he could still sing and didn't sound like he was talking in to a mic without any of the musicians knowing about it. It's fairly boring, nothing really great or memorable in here. Just kind of a classic easy listening/soft rock kind of sound, and it’s not even good because Crazy Horse seems kinda shit at actually playing their instruments. Maybe the one notable bing is the "plagiarism" in this album in "Down By The River" which sounds a bit like old CSNY, but not as good since the harmonies aren't anywhere close. I dont' think this should be on here. It's entirely forgettable.

Im about half way through and think this may be my seventh Neil Young album, which i think is too much. This has some good tunes but im happy to die having heard maybe 2 or 3 of these

Too maudlin for me. I’ve always liked Cinnamon Girl though so it’s interesting to hear the album that surrounded that gem in its entirety. I like Down By The River, seems familiar. Billy Talbot is a heck of a bass player, particularly on Cowgirl In The Sand. Might add that song into more regular rotation.

I don't like this, not at all. I don't like the sound of a Cinnamon Girl. I don't like the voice, don't like the songs. I tried to make it through, but I didn't last long.

He has a good voice and the guitar playing is great. Its something about that old recording sound that's old but not to old that feels really nice listening to. Its mostly to slow for me in the rock genre though so not something I will listen to often again.

Neil Young has , without doubt, some great songs but he has many many more duds. The first track on this album , Cinnamon Girl,is a cracker. Down by the River could be great but is 6 min too long. The rest are turgid.

Sorry Neil. You just don't do it for me. I can't get over your whiny voice and the country nonsense. Not unlistenable. You're not early Genesis, but this just doesn't do it for me.

Cinnamon Girl is the best song on the album. The rest is typical late '60's folk rock. Not really my thing, but I can see the influence on later artists; especially during the '90's grunge/garage/alternative period.

Please - no more Neil Young! I listened - to most of it. And there are a couple of songs on here that are worth listening to, but no, it's not something I needed to hear

It was ok, I found myself a little bored, because the nostalgia it was selling me wasn't my own

Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand are mildly decent twitchy guitar epics but overall this debut from Neil Young with his Crazy Horse team tends to be duller than a dull day in Dull County. And things veer from dull to just dreadful with the painful screeching violinfest on Running Dry (Requiem For My Patience). 2.5 stars for that and for being so staggeringly overrated.

This album opened me up to Neil Young. I didn't love it, but the jamming in that last track made me want to take a second look at him. I don't love his voice but I could likely get into some of his music. This is why I joined this project. Open me up to stuff I wasn't into before. I don't expect it to show me anything I will fall in love with, rather give me new options to get to love!

I read the title as everybody knows this is nonsense.

If this guy sane karaoke at The Red Lion, they'd send him right up the road to Sammy's.

Running Dry sounds like it should be played on a harp, in some King's quarters...Weird cadence to it.

Последний трек что то типо протометала, а трек down by the river включает в себя протогранжевый рифф, который мне напомнил smells like teen spirit, да и википедия пишет жанр протогранж. Обычный рок. Ничего обычного. Вокалист не очень нравится. Что то типо немного кантри и американы. 2

This was my 100th album for this project, and unfortunately, it didn't make me feel young, or crazy. While I do appreciate the rawness, and authenticity of the album, it needed a bit more of a spice to engage me better. Favorite Song: "Round And Round(It Won't Be Long)"

Still don’t get it, dull and bland

Wow. There are much more interesting albums on this list by a long shot from this same era. I thought this one would be more captivating, but I was wrong. I would much rather listen to Neil from Deja Vu (Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, 1970) than this one.

I've never been a Neil Young fan. I hate his voice. I think his music is generally bad. That said, I think collaborating, or at least harmonizing, wiith Crazy Horse really helped polish. out the qualities I dislike. "Cinnamon Girl" was enjoyable. Same with the title track. "Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)" was the dud here. Everything I hate about Neil in one song. "Cowgirl in the Sand" was close to meeting that same criteria, but it was a. little jammier and that momentum kept me from skipping the song entirely. By the album's end, I found myself a little surprised. Finally, a Neil Young album that isn't awful. That said, I don't think I'll ever come around to Neil Young.

Not bad

Listened to it on my way to work, really set me up for a terrible day. ‘Running dry’ was unnecessarily depressing. Probably a 2/5 again, the muted 60’s tones aren’t doing it for me. ‘Cowgirl in the sand’ does salvage it a bit though.

I found this all a bit dull. There are some pleasant lyrics and vocal arrangements at times, but I found it quite whiny. The guitars throughout meandered and irritated me, bit indulgent, and lacking character or conviction. Title track was my favourite.

TBH I always find Neil Young quite boring and this is no different!

Probably the least terrible of the Neil Young stuff on the list. Still not good.

Bland country sounds and painfully whiny sometimes, though I liked some of the electric guitar (especially in The Losing End and Cowgirl in the Sand). The strings are interesting in Running Dry, and I quite like the haunting quality of the verses, but then it returns to the chorus which is quite generic. Struggled to feel moved by the “emotive” singing. Down By The River was done better by Buddy Miles and Young’s singing is BAD on that final track.

I'd rather die than listen to another Neil Young album, but honestly this was the most tolerable one so far.

Not for me, found it very boring

The music is part of the soundtrack of my early youth. I like to listen to Neil Young from time to time for this sentimental reason. I found this album rather boring. Only Down By The River was nice to listen to again. 2/5

I can see how this would have influenced artists I like such as Radiohead but not really one I listen to again.

Not the hugest fan of Neil Young, but Cinnamon Girl is on here. That track was covered by the Stone Roses and Smashing Pumpkins amongst others.

This was an ok album for me. I think maybe Neil's voice might be more of an acquired taste? I have never listened to any Neil Young album. I am not the biggest lyrics person ever so sometimes I lose track in the songs a bit if the musical parts and notes in the melody don't catch my attention and I think this one falls in the category. Cinnamon Girl was a standout to me.

Favorite: The Losing End I approached this with an open mind, but discovered after a couple of listens that I still really dislike Neil's vocals and am very unlikely to ever listen to this or any other Neil Young album (unless there is another on the list, which I'm pretty sure of). Really like The Losing End and to a lesser degree Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. Giving it two stars on the strength of those two songs.

I don't mind this version of Neil Young compared to some of the other albums of his we've been served by the randomizer. The songs were ranging between nicely rambly and a little *too* rambly. it's a rare 40 minute album where i'll complain about the length, but the jamming on the last track had me wishing it would wrap up. almost a 3 but not one i'll come back to.

I don't like his voice, but the album was ok! I don't know why Neil Young has multiple albums on this list with Crazy Horse because I feel like these albums aren't good enough to warrant multiple entries.

No thanks! This album is at best boring, and at worst actively annoying. Everything is just so uninspired. It’s almost like 90% of the album was made with the one objective of not offending anyone or taking any chances. The remaining tracks are some sort of whiny country knockoff. I think everyone understood that he was a very sad boy after the first 5 tracks, so you could have saved the horrible violin stuff at the end. Other reviews mention that this was released 4 months after his first album. Maybe he could have spend a bit longer and produced something worth listening to.

Way better than his stuff with CSNY, but still a bit too much falsetto and easy listening. “Cinnamon Girl” and “Cowgirl in the Sand” are strong though.

Meh, only because story / songwriter combos don't do it for me. I can appreciate the talent behind it, but I just don't care. :shrug:

I feel like this type of album is better done by others.

Super boring no energy

Kinda boring, a tad repetitive. I do appreciate keeping the runtime tight, and I dig what Crazy Horse is doing, certainly more lively than Young sounds without them.

This is a hard one because it’s fine, but Young had definitively not hit his stride yet, although he was already an excellent songwriter.

Sometimes think I don’t like Neil Young as much as I should. At some point I should make the effort though.

this is the second Neil young and crazy horse album b2b and everything I said about the first one still stays true. still bad vocalist, still boring instrumental, but with the added bonus of the afore mentioned war crime fiddle. after that song I want a requiem for myself

Ooo la la la, la la la. Ridiculous. This is trite garbage, Neil. None of this makes any sense. Somewhere in there was a violin being strangled to within an inch of its life. Maybe once this came across as clever, but wow are those solos and guitar flourishes clumsy and poorly realised to modern ears. The single note 'solo' on Down by the River is particularly painful.

Some nice highlights on here. I have a hard time with the vibrato and tone of his voice. I get that he’s an important artist. I just don’t usually seek out chances to listen to him. Some cool parts but also lots of parts I didn’t find particularly cool at all. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Easy listen, a vibe just not my vibe

Kind of a boring album to be honest. And I do like Neil Young's music. This was just kind of... passive and boring.

Listened on YouTube. Wasn't tracking, but think I got the full album. Not what I expected from Neil Young, I guess. Pretty neutral on the tracks, nothing stood out. Nice album cover. Wonder why it's ground-breaking?

I don’t get it. Guitar parts are simple, but not in a musical way, lyrics are weird, and I just didn’t really enjoy listening to it.

When I first started listening to this album I though it was boring but it was ok, whatever, I'm just not really into it - that was until I got to 'Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)' which was frankly auditorily offensive with it's violin/fiddle section. Lots of people seem to have a fondness for Neil Young, and maybe its a time and place thing (?) I found his voice is pretty irritating - so I don't really get it. Next

Didn't really like this - but now I know where Cinnamon Girl came from. Although, I do prefer the Matthew Sweet cover.
