Not tremendously into the jazz/bossa nova stuff. That being said, this is okay. I think it's perfectly pleasant background noise. I just can't help that feeling of "this would play during cocktail hour" or "this would play in an elevator." Perhaps not the best way to look at it, but it's definitely what my mind defaults to. It's a bit boring to me. I think you'd love this if you liked jazz! I just don't personally.

Another one of my favorites, especially when in the mood for some chill vibes. You know the Girl From Ipanema. You might know a few others. The samba rhythms are infectious and will be in your head for a while. Smooth as butter, especially Stan Getz's sax playing.

First song told me exactly what I was in for, and had no idea this was who made that iconic song. Really really enjoyed this. So relaxing and just easy to listen to. When you dig in you find this mastery of saxophone being played in such a subtle way yet without a single flaw. I might have to buy this album

I wouldn't mind at all if it was playing at a bar or something. If my friend put it on though I'd tell them to turn it the fuck off. It feels like it wants to be laid back and relaxing but the vocals are so grating it hits a weird middle ground where it's just nothing. I keep coming back to find why it's so popular but everytime it just feels like sitting around and waiting to die in a care home. Thank god for the saxophone though. Everytime I was nodding off it blasted my ears and woke me up.

Dude, gorgeous. Its bubbly and gentle. You can throw this on at any time, have a coffee, smoke something, good clear your mind album and its timeless. Romantic but in an old classy way.

A charming selection of bossa nova but with nothing that really stands out

- This is definitely background music, to me. The bossa nova feel is a lot for a whole album for me. This is pleasant, but doesn't move me at all. I wonder if I would have been more moved if I understood the lyrics, but I kind of doubt it. It gives restaurant/cafe/lounge during warm months vibes . - The guy's voice is weak, and he definitely can't hit those higher notes. The woman's voice is quite nice, but she only sings on a couple songs, though I like when she does. - The sax is pretty nice (I'm not usually into brass heavy music) - a little airy in parts, but mostly had a nice, warm tone. The rest of the instrumentation stays very background, but the piano is pleasant enough, too. - To be fair, I'm not into jazz, but this is pretty much only jazz adjacent and as accessible as jazz gets - it doesn't veer off the melody very far. I just don't find it that interesting, I guess, and the songs aren't super different from each other. It feels like Girl From Ipanema a bunch of times, though O Grande Amor is nice. - I think it's a 2.5. I'll probably round up because this genre isn't really my thing, but I didn't dislike it.

I really found like I like Samba and this is no exception. Just smooth, relaxing, and beautiful. Perfect chill music.

Before: I recognize the name. I'm thinking some form of jazz from the 50's, maybe? During: Oh, "The Girl from Ipanema". Of course I recognize that, a solid five. This should be a enjoyable listen. 5 The Girl From Ipanema 4 Doralice 3 Para Machucar Meu Coracao = To Hurt My Heart 3 Desafinado 4 Corcovado 3 So Danco Samba (Jazz Samba) 3 O Grande Amor 4 Vivo Sohando After : Average = 3.6, I'll round up to 4. This is not how I usually do this but I'm feeling generous. Can't say I'd go out of my way to listen to this again but it was enjoyable. If it weren't for "The Girl from Ipanema", it'd be a 3.

it’s a 5 star vibe but a 3 star experience

I feel a bit ignorant saying this, because I know how important this album is, especially coming from Brazil, but I just couldn’t really connect with it. It’s not that I dislike bossa nova; I actually really love Tom & Elis. For some reason, though, this one didn’t quite click with me. I’ll give it 3 stars.

6 out of 5 - a breezy masterpiece. A sultry, smooth bossa nova gem. Transportive and singular, impeccably recorded and mixed - puts you at a beach-side resort in Rio in your mind. I name dropped this record in my review of the Sinatra & Jobim album as the highest standard of this style/songbook and hearing this again so soon after cements my feeling there. Cool and sexy but with some melancholy in there...chef's kiss.

Cool album. Relaxed, not challenging. Makes me want to use the word vibe and I never use that word. Obviously the Girl from Impanema is the stand out track, but you’ll be strangely familiar with may others.

I’m going to celebrate all the Bossa Nova on this list because I’m not convinced there’s enough (they certainly did Herb Alpert dirty by snubbing him). “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Corcovado” are two of the most recognizable Bossa Nova tracks in existence and these versions may be THE versions… “So nice you get ‘em twice!” A must-buy record for your cocktail party record collection.

The only truly bad music is boring music, and this is super boring. Might actually be the worst music I’ve ever heard, because it is so incredibly boring.

Early Saturday afternoon I went for a walk in the frigid cold and returned back home to listen to this while accompanied by a cup of hot coffee wrapped in a blanket. The Girl from Ipanema is such a comforting song to start with and the vocals are beautiful. To me this album represents _the_ canon entry level bossa nova album, but nevertheless it's precisely because it's an excellent album that it's used for genre tourists such as myself to get a glimpse into the genre's beauty in a singular album. I'm sorry that I'm not well versed in the genre to know if it is undeserving of being praised as such, but at face value it's wonderful.

Enjoyed listening to this over the weekend, hunkered down while awaiting and watching the heavy snow blanket us. There are some latin dance classics here, and while not as fast as typical samba, the slowed down jazz aspect made this danceable while also relaxing to listen to. "The Girl from Ipanema" is in my head now.

I like João, it's hard to look elsewhere when you're in a Bosa Nova mood. I really enjoy O Grande Amor off this one, but it strangely is the least listened to song off the album on spotify. Most often, if I am in a Bosa Nova-y mood, I look to Clube da esquina which is more influenced by more contemporary folk. 4/5 for G&G.

Nice, pleasant elevator music. Not sure how anyone could feel strongly about this in any direction.

This album is a beautiful vibe, especially in sub-freezing temperatures when getting ready for a winter storm. I always forget how much I love bossa nova, until some good stuff crosses my path. And this my friends is the good stuff. I'm not sure I'd give it 5 stars (as like a lot of bossa nova, it's easy for it to blend into the background while listening). But it is certainly 4.5 stars and I"m happy to round up.

Ugh, I love this album. Makes me want to sob with how delicate it is. I'm definitely weak to bossa nova in general, but there's something to be said about the sheer skill it takes to strip something down to arrangements as simple as this and nail every one with panache. At the end of the album, I was left desperate for more.

One of my favourite laidback jazz albums to relax to

The album that got Bossa Nova worldwide recognition and gave Jazz which had been suffering a commercial & artistic decline due to Rock N Roll in recent years a much-needed kick in the ass. It featured the lovely Astrud Gilberto on a of couple tracks, and a gorgeous album cover painted by Olga Albizu that looks exactly how the music contained within sounds. No small feat! An essential jazz album for any library and more than that- one hell of a fun listen as you sip on Caipirinhas with that special girl or guy.

I’ve been trying for a long time but I think I’m finally about ready to admit that despite my best efforts that I don’t really like most jazz. Nothing against this album in particular, because it’s well-played and pleasant to listen to, and created a nice ambiance during dinner, but it doesn’t really move past “mood music” for me. I felt for a long time that if you were serious about music that you should at least appreciate jazz, and I’m not sure I’ll ever get there.

Genre: Bossa nova A smooth jazz album that has stood the proverbial test of time, 62 years strong this year, Getz/Gilberto is as strong an entry in the genre as there could be, but that certainly didn't make it more enjoyable for me. I like listening to this sort of music, but never for more than necessary. It's good, beautiful even, but it's overall a bit too sleepy and a little too slow for me. A solid listen, and I enjoyed the back-and-forth, male/female, Portugese/English vocals, but I won't need to check this out again. Listen if you usually like this kind of stuff. 3/5

I've never really listened to musch jazz, or Bosa Nova in particular, so this album was very new to me. It kept my attention, and was interesting musically. For me to think that as a rock/metal fan must mean it's pretty good.

This one wasn't as interesting as the album prior. I am not sure why. It just didn't work as well in my opinion. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good. The backing band wasn't as interesting either. This felt more like elevator music than the last one. Liked Songs: "Doralice" , "Só Danço Samba" ,"The Girl From Ipanema" , "Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)"

Immaculate vibes. Chill, sexy, cool.

Again knew only one song, but the rest was not what I expected. The blend of jazz and bossa nova is beautiful and there were many tracks I actually enjoyed more than The Girl From Ipanema. I really loved the instrumentation as well as the vocals which sometimes switched from song to song. Groovy stuff and very chill vibes.

Very good English renditions of bossa nova classics. Astrud Gilberto’s voice is incredible and the arrangements are very good. Smooth and carry the music well. They also take interesting production choices here like hard panning the vocals to the right which gives it a beautiful air of nostalgia. You probably need to listen to some more Bossa Nova then just this but let’s say four stars.

Obvious Iconic album. I love the story of Getz’s friend going to Brazil with Tomy Bennet, learning what Bosa Nova was and bringing it back to the states to then have a huge impact on the music industry and bringing jazz back as popular after the start of Rock n roll in 1960. I love how good the album feels in its simplicity.

as a Brazilian not born yet when this was launched, it's incredible to know it was the first non-North American album to win AOTY. many of the songs are recnognisable from the most remarkable soap operas we've ever had, most of them popularised by the screenwriter and director Manoel Carlos who we've sadly lost this week. if you like this, try Pela Luz dos Olhos Teus (my favourite) and Só Tinha de Ser Com Você, from Jobim

Like a warm tropical breeze... The one thing that is more cringy than saying how much you like and appreciate something with massive success and wide appeal, is criticizing something just because it had massive success and wide appeal. This album is super smoothe, a little on the nose, but sets out to do exactly what it tries to do.

My only experience with bossa nova music is knowing the Girl from Ipanema like basically everyone else in the world and using the bossa nova setting on the funky little 1970s drum machine I own. Overall, this album feels like a great introduction to bossa nova music. It was an enjoyable and very fun listen, but I felt it was a bit repetitive near the end and was maybe a bit too easy listening at times. Luckily, it really doesn't overstay its welcome at all.

This is very pleasant, but sounds like variations on the same song (except for "The Girl from Ipanema"). If I had a cabana on a beach, I'd play this as I sipped cocktails to keep the vibes relaxed.

Yeah it's kind of background music, but there's no rule (I checked!) that background music can't be 5-star music. You can play this all day and I won't complain. Nor will your mistress. Assuming your mistress is over 65.

It's smooth jazz. Very influential, very well-performed, very groovy smooth jazz with absolutely no flaws...but in the end, it's not anything more or less than an exemplary specimen of the style. Also, most of the lyrics are in Portuguese, which may be a positive or a negative based on how much Portuguese you speak and how important lyrics are to you. Favorite tracks: Só Danço Samba, Vivo Sonhando, and yes, the iconic "The Girl From Ipanema."

I love this album. I already play it regularly in my house. Perfect for a quiet night with my wife or just relaxing and reading a book. 5 stars.

In an age defined by our excessive consumerism and inability to unplug from the world around us, it's hard to believe that an album of this tempo and minimalism would have set the world on fire more than sixty years ago, let alone remain relevant in contemporary music discourse. And yet, there is a distinct allure to be found in the cross-continental marriage of South American rhythms and North American blues that is front-and-centre on this showcase of the bossa nova sound, even in 2026. While João Gilberto's forlorn whispers and coos often fail to excite the senses across the album, his then-wife Astrud's modest and nonchalant vocals are positively magnetic. The odd couple, plus a tranquil samba beat and Getz' gilded sax, somehow altogether imbue the lead track in particular, 'The Girl from Ipanema', with an understated, timeless quality. Although this record stands as a vehicle for their partnership, Stan Getz often steals the show, filling the air with his schmoozy and nostalgic tenor sax on tracks such as 'Para Machucar Meu Coração' and 'Corcovado', recalling to mind dark, smoky cafes or sandy tree-lined promenades at sunset. The latter track slinks along in such romantic fashion that is hard to resist an armchair sway-along at least. Yet without Gilberto's melodic anchoring and Antonio Carlos Jobim's unassuming piano to provide the distinctly melancholic framework for Getz to rest upon, would the album still possess the same soul?

Absolutely love jazz. Absolutely love Portuguese. What a treat to listen to Brazilian Jazz. The dominance of the saxophone in the majority of songs is a delight. Slow enough to have as background music; fast enough to dance the night away with a partner. Top Songs: 1. O Grande Amor 2. Doralice 3. So Danco Samba

One of those, artists that i've never heard of, but of course, wrote a song that everyone knows: The Girl From Ipanema. I have no idea how or why this song became so popular. This album is credited as the best Bossa Nova albums of all time and one of the best selling jazz albums of all time. Bossa Nova is basically very slow samba and usually has jazz elements added. I pretty much know nothing about samba or bossa nova or jazz.......but I think any movie that has a dim jazz bar scene is playing this music in the background. The music just sounds perfect for high class, dim jazz club environments. I can appreciate this album has it's place and it's incredibly niche, but when you're in the right environment and mood, it really hits. Put this on for date night at your house and you're golden.

This is music you’d expect to hear when at a fancy restaurant. Brings a nice calming ambience, with impactful powerful grooves & a nice laid back approach to the vocals, keeping the overall vibe of the album very nice & chilled. Still not sure why the albums not called Getz/ Gilberto/ Jobim. Jobim features on pretty much all the album don’t understand why he didn’t get his name on the title. All the instruments compliments each other in such an interesting way. You have Gilberto’s nice guitar chords playing steady repetitive chords, as Getz’s gets to showcase what an impressive saxophonist he is. Jobin adding his gentle piano chords which flows through every track he’s included in. The voice of Astrud Gilberto, who I’m going to presume is the wife/ family member of the guitarist, is so gentle and unique. It fits this bossa nova sound very well, in fact I’d have liked to hear more of it. I understand the appeal of this album, and really enjoyed the introduction to bossa nova. However it’s just not something I will revisit that often so I think that reflects harshly in my rating. I did enjoy it as something different though. So much respect for it being the first non-American album to win Album of the year, that’s very cool and I can totally see why. Favourite tracks are: ‘The Girl From Ipanema’, ‘Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)’, ‘O Grande Amor’.

A truly calming and peaceful album that took me by surprise with how much I actually like it. I will definitely be coming back to this playlist for reading and if I ever just want something that will just ground me and make me feel just a little bit better :)

Doralice- I like the non-lexical vocals. Got a bit of rhythm, makes me dance a little with it. Feels expensive and very jazzy. 5/5 Para Machuchar Meu coracao- bit more laid back. Nice piano. Feels like I’m at an expensive restaurant, however I would not pay much attention to this song if it came on. Makes me sleepy, kinda boring. 3/5 Desafinado- more focus on vocal. Nice precision and piano. Gets a bit boring and repetitive. However, is a nice song to listen to. 3.5/5 Corcovado(quiet night of quiet stars)- sets a very clear vibe. However, other songs in the album also achieve this and more. Missing something. Cannot see myself listening to again. Nice sax. 2/5 Corcovado (quiet nights of quiet stars)- bit confused why there is 2 called the same. This one is a little better I like the female singing at the start a bit more. Saxophone comes in a bit stronger. Nothing spectacular. 2.5/5 So dance samba- has a lot more potential. Needs something more to give it the push over edge. Good guitar. Nice percussion. This one grows on you. First listen I was a little disappointed, but second listen (in a coffee shop while working on things) it was the perfect vibe. Chill, fresh sounding, brings instant relaxation. It just feels… warm? No other way to describe it sonically. Makes you feel warm and cozy. The Girl from Ipanema is of course a classic. Other favorites are “Só Danço Samba,” “Doralice,” and “Para Machucar Meu Coracao”

There are only a handful of jazz albums on this list, and it is a bit of a random assortment - nonetheless every one of them is outstanding and regarded as a classic of the genre. It is a puzzle why there are TWO Stan Getz albums given how few jazz albums are here, but that doesn't change the fact that this album is a brilliant masterpiece. The connection and relationship between Gilberto and Getz produced so much extraordinary music and helped elevate in the US the remarkable samba jazz that was developing in Brazil.

Album No. 0112 on my list. I had never heard of Stan Getz before, or any of his collaborators for that matter. But obviously I had known “The Girl From Ipanema”. That song is indeed the best song to me on this album, because it’s so catchy. But the other songs do hold up as well. It’s really a good album. I don’t know the first thing about bossa nova and have only little knowledge about Jazz, but I can definitely see why this is a seminal record for the bossa nova genre. Very good listen! I’ll add “Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)”, and “Desafinado” to my playlist as well. I think I’ll listen to the whole thing again pretty soon, I’m glad that I discovered this through the 1001 album list. 4/5 stars.

Fantastic Collaboration!

LOVE GETZ/GILBERTO! Gateway drug to Bossa Nova / MPB / Tropicalia (to a degree). Everything here seems so deliberate and well placed... and yet so loose? I think it has to do with how well-distilled each part is -- so that only the best remain, and the dregs (see: Sergio Mendes / Verocai / Deodato / Duprat and their over-orchestration, which I personally do enjoy, but can get a bit saccharine) are filtered off. Top 10 album for me personally.

The girl from impenema! what a legendary song. This album is great, I am 100% putting it on whilst I cook something fancy and drink red wine.

This may be a good example of bossa nova music, but man this was a chore to get through. It was even quite pleasant in parts but just found it so incredibly boring. Music to put yourself to sleep to.

It's a shame that this music became the background sound in elevators. I'm sure it's good, but it fades away that I completely forgot it was playing.

The vibes are immaculate, mostly because of the Brazilian taken here and less over the jazz lines of Stan Getz. It’s not perfect but it’s a good time and beautifully performed.

This was good. I thought it was my 2nd Joao Gilberto album but the latiny album Sinatra did was with Antonio Carlos Jobim. It's just both these albums have Girl From Ipanema. What a great song. Yeah these are some chill, loungey, jazzy, Brazilian vibes.

I feel like bossa nova songs have suffered from being associated with campy Austin Powers style comedies or elevator music. This album was fun to listen to and made me think of a chilled out bar where you can get a good rum cocktail. But also taking a 1970s mirror/wood veneered elevator to get to that bar.

I think I love this one. So chill. 5 stars

Basic jazz

Like an old familiar friend

a classic of the bossa nova genre which is yet another genre i'm always saying i should listen to more. this is like a warm blanket to me. joão gilberto's soft vocals and stan getz' soothing saxophone are so comforting. what i find most interesting about the development of the genre is how it was in response to the development of microphones, yet only the lower quality ones available in brazil, so it was intentionally cut back, simplified, and arranged differently. the innovation through the magic of buying two of them giving equality clarity to the vocals and the guitar is a novelty as well. nothing really new to say about an album like this but it's one that deserves all the praise it gets.

I feel like I'm listening to this music wrong by not listening to it whilst laying on a hammock with a caipirinha in hand, but this is lovely anyways. The original chill beats to study and relax to. Such a good evening listen before relaxing to sleep. I really do not have much to say about this album, I think it sounds great and I know it's a bit of a "babies first Bossa Nova" due to its ubiquity in America, but there's a reason for that and it's because it's lovely.

This was fun. Very easy to get lost in the weeds with this one. Its nice and soothing, easy to have on in the background. I love the saxaphone throughout, but even the vocals kind of grounded me. This was cool.

Nice but all the "bossa and some other genre" albums have damaged the brand a little bit.

Very smooth cozy album. This is the album you want to listen to during the Holidays. A glass of bourbon, Christmas tree lit in the background and a fresh layer of snow on the ground.

Very jazzy - this is totally music that I would cook dinner to

The comically over-confident reframing of carcinisation – “… the many attempts of nature to evolve a crab” according to its discoverer – as the ultimate, unavoidable fate of all species is one of my favourite memes. It might be the best meme: po-faced, daring you to take it seriously, completely unable of doing anyone any harm and so, so silly (Critics of the meme, who aver that it may lead to a misunderstanding of evolutionary biology, do exist … but come on, chill out). What’s that got to do with this bossa nova record? Well, the argument goes that while jazz might have always had complex chord progressions, samba musicians were always doing that sort of thing anyway, so really it’s the case that bossa nova was happening in both genres before it was given its formal name. From that perspective, no one group was responsible, it was rather – what with the encroaching popularity of rock and roll forcing innovation in both forms – that bossa nova was always inevitable. It’s fun to think that Bossa Nova – a form neither jazz nor samba seems to want to fully claim as its own – might offer a musical equivalent to the carcinisation argument. Not least because the selection pressures that favour the crab body plan so neatly parallel those that gave expression to bossa nova – as a crab lives in waves, bossa nova takes its name quite literally from a “new wave”; as the crab requires body armour to defend from threats, so too was bossa nova an artistic response to the emergence of rock and roll; as a crab needs to traverse sand quickly, the signature song of the genre, “Girl from Ipanema” is literally about a beach. It won’t shock anyone to hear that I like crabs. They move in predictable but rhythmically compelling ways. They have the capacity to spring a surprise. They put me in mind of charmed days on the beach. And on all counts, so does Getz/Gilberto.

Soft, intimate, effortless. Guitar is quiet and precise. Piano glides in and out, filling the tracks out whilst leaving space where space is needed. Vocals are perfect, inviting, relaxing. I can only guess what is being said but im sure its beautiful and romantic. Sax is almost another vocalist in itself, so much emotion in every note. Late evening or early morning. Lower the lights. Close your eyes and drift. A wonderful experience. 9/10

Not my kind music

Can immediately hear the influence this record had on other work. Very chill, easygoing songs, perfect for the background while reading or cooking. Vocals are smooth and beautiful, guitar is crisp, and I love the bass too. Saxophone solos are gentle but sexy.

I'm not super knowledgeable about jazz or bossa nova, so all I can say about this album right now is that the songs sound nice. The general sound of the album feels very calm and sweet, and sounds like something that would play in a dimly lit coffee shop somewhere. I also don't know Portuguese thoroughly so I'm not quite sure what is being said. But the instrumentation is very good! I like the use of what I think is saxophone in Doralice. Also interesting that this was half made by an American guy. Bring back bossa nova in 2026 I think. 10/10

I went into this expecting to hate it, but it was good. Super chill.

I think I’ve fallen for Astrud Gilberto. Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado are a class apart because of her, but the whole album is beautiful.

Opens with the beyond cool "The Girl from Ipanema" and the vibe is set from there onwards. Bossa Nova is always a cool sound and this way utterly delightful.

Great bosa nova/jazz album, i prefer the one with frank sinatra but this version still veeery good, really was thinking about 5 but nah it does NOT deserve that high rating
