Soothing, Relaxing, Pleasant...so many adjectives fit. It also won Album of the Year in1965, the year of my birth. That gets a few points.

what a joyful surprise, this self-titled joint album between stan getz and joão gilberto. this sultry jazz album was such an easy listen! gilberto's voice was incredibly smooth. switching between portugese and english added to the mood. there's something lovely about music in a foreign language! i'm not mad about this album at all, though i'm sure there were intricacies i didn't appropriately appreciate.

This was incredibly easy to listen to and as smooth as butter. The intersection of jazz and samba styles is a great intersection, in my opinion. I don't really have any notes for this album, other than that it was quite a pleasant listen.

If there was an essential bossa nova album this would be it. Or at least a very strong contender. Easy 5 stars. Especially the time of listening my city has been raining for the last 2 weeks. This brings Copacabana vibes and lifts the spirits somewhat.

Ambience for some jazzy 60s music

Here we go again, sure Girl from Ipanema is beautiful and all the voices and instruments are amazing and you can absolutely have no negative comment on this. Why am I then after listening to the album bored, sleepy and even angry with the world? Cause I apparantly hate bossa-nova and wished it had never exsisted.

Getz/Gilberto is a classic statement of jazz and bossa nova. The presence of the great Brazilian vocalist and guitarist João Gilberto lends this album its legitimacy alongside pure Bossa Nova records. Getz's saxophone playing is delicate and sensuous, and plays well against the languid guitar and singing. This album is simultaneous relaxing, yet will make you move your hips if you're not careful

The Girl from Ipanema might be one of the most iconic songs of all time.

Stan and Joao's covers are a little slow for me - a little too subdued and sleepy. The album is mostly known for "The Girl from Ipanema" - the shorter, all-English version that sold in the US as a single (vocals by Astrud Gilberto, Joao's wife at the time) has a bit more pep to it.

It’s ok I suppose. I see this pop up on a lot of vinyl groups I’m in so it’s obviously one that lots of folk love (either that or it’s somehow become known as a MUST have on vinyl for some reason and people buy it because they think they should have it?) Either way, it wasn’t my bag baby.

Listened Before? No The Girl From Ipanema is such a light and pretty song. Love the guitar progression and the sax overlay around the 2:40 mark. Great music for letting all of your cares dissolve. Para Machuchar Meu Coracao is a languid love song. The sax work through the back quarter has so much emotion and restraint. Makes for a very soothing listen. This album lost a bit of my focus during the midsection, as the sounds started to run together a bit, but I enjoyed its company nonetheless. This is a cozy jazz album with quality vocalists and even better instrumentals (particularly the saxophone). I haven't listened to much bossa nova, but I can see the appeal. The songs don't feel cool and unrushed, and seem ready made for vacation listening. This is a solid 4 / 5 to me. Added to Library? Yes Songs Added to Playlists: - The Girl From Ipanema (Sunny-vibes)

All songs here were present in past João Gilberto's solo albums. Getz sax adds an extra flavor but still pretty good as the original ones.

Good lounge music

At first I was going to give this a really solid 4 because it was a really pleasant listen throughout and I especially liked the saxophone solos. However, after listening to it throughout the entire day, I realized that this was a rare jazz/bossa nova album that transcended simply ambient listening and became something I actively enjoyed for 40 minutes straight. Girl from Ipanema was a great start to the album and it kept up those good vibes throughout.

The band's wink is quiet, but proves subtle instead of weak well into the era of streaming through headphones. Getz/Gilberto is a small-space jazz album, but there still is space. The music works almost anywhere, provided it doesn't have to overwhelm anything. The opener contains the largest note of expected beauty, which flits around the rest of the tracks. Each offset just a bit, each suggesting the easiest of landings.

Another apposite selection. Astrud Gilberto dies and the next day we get this. Bossa nova is a type of jazz I can tolerate. Girl from Ipanema is a great tune. The songs do all tend to blend into each other but it’s very pleasant background music. I will always remember being on a cruise round Norway where the band played Girl from Ipanema seemingly every day on the observation deck. Seemed a bit out of place at the time but it was a very chilled vibe!

Great jazz album. This is almost a 5 but isn't because it fades into the background and loses my attention. This is on my "list" of guitar music that I want to learn. Astrud Gilberto's vocals are chill and pleasant.

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know ‘The Girl from Ipanema’. It’s a classic and this is a wonderful album.

Not sure if Astrud Gilberto's recent death was the reason this got served (could be coincidence), but hearing "Girl From Ipanema" made me look that song up specifically as I was curious where the ubiquitous easy listening tune originated. While this isn't the first ever recording (that was in 1962), this was the version that became the international surprise hit and launched Gilberto's career. If I have the story right, she wasn't even credited on the album when it was released, it was her husband Joao who was the star at the time — she was new to singing. Anyway, that song aside, the whole affair is pleasant and would entice me to sit down at a table in a club if I had wandered in and heard this playing. As a must-listen album, it was perfectly OK in the background. The sax sounds a little too wet for my taste, and all in all, sure, I liked it just fine.

I wondered if this would show up today. RIP Astrud. I got into bossa nova and samba back when Jobim passed away, and yet I somehow never listened to this whole album. I knew several of the songs, but the rest were really great, too. And what can you say about Ipanema, other than "Damn I wish I'd written that one." Second most recorded song in history. And it deserves every bit of praise it gets. I just love Astrud's voice. Relaxed and mellow, with a touch of sadness. And I dig Getz's sax playing. Very breathy and chill. Yes, the album is very same-y, but some albums do that well. Like this one. Five stars? Maybe not, but I can't see going lower than 4, unless you wanna deduct points of Getz being an asshole.

On the day that Astrid died I get the wonderful Getz/Gilberto album. ( Astrid is uncredited) that launched her career. Brilliant summer vibes. Shimmering trumpet/piano with salsa vibes.

As albums go, it's fairly one-note. It's more like one song played 10 times. I guess if you like 'The Girl From Ipanema', then you're really going to enjoy this.

AL: an excellent record. especially loved listening to this with headphones on and dolby atmos mixing. Getz gentle voice alongside Astruds apperances and the soulful yet gentle jazz backing from Getz & Gilberto, truly revolutionary stuff and still holds up in my opinion, as one of (if not the) best jazz album of all time. Today's album is a samba/jazz/bossa nova record. I'm not overly familiar with the samba/bossa nova scene, but have been getting introduced to it through this generator, so we will see how this goes. This album features composer and pianist, Antonio Carlos Jobim, who was featured on the Frank Sinatra record Sinatra/Jobim which I reviewed a while ago. That record also featured the song "Girl from Ipanema", which is a stellar track. The woman that they got to sing that song on this album was Astrud Gilberto. She was in a relationship with the feature guitarist Joao Gilberto. The saxophonist, Stan Getz went behind Joao's back, and fooled around with Astrud causing her and Joao to split, and her to start officially dating Stan. All this happened while this record was being produced. Nothing like a little love triangle to make the music flow. Perhaps one of the factors that may have saved this record was the fact that Gilberto was Spanish, and Getz was American. Jobim was the translator between them, and I guess Gilberto would tell Getz off, but Jobim would translate it as if Gilberto was singing Getz's praises. This music is stellar dinner party or cooking music. It is so relaxing and easy listening, with the Spanish/jazz liveliness. By times, the saxophone feels out of place, but apparently Getz "stole the Spanish sound for his own gain", so by doing a joint album, it was the Spanish's way of taking it back. I would certainly listen to this record again. It went well playing as I worked today. It isn't a genre of music that demands your undivided attention. Favourite songs: Corcovado (Quiet Night of Quiet Stars), So Danco Samba, Para Machuchar Meu Coracao, The Girl from Ipanema, Doralice, Desafinado Least favourite songs: O Grande Amor 4/5

I think everyone has heard The Girl From Ipanema, but not heard of Getz or Gilberto. Getz/Gilberto is perfect for having on in the background at a gathering or a nice restaurant. I feel like I've heard most of this album -- in old 60s-70s movies or coffee shops or more modern movies. There are some songs that are repetitive, and it's mostly easy listening.

Was this the second or third album 1001 sent us that had The Girl From Ipanema? The male and female vocals on this version are excellent. It’s hard to believe this was the first time Astrud sang professionally. This album was made only five years after the bossa nova genre started. It’s hard for kids like us to have this perspective. The music on this album is very quiet but it moves. I like Steve Getz’a soft almost whispering sax on The Girl from Ipanema and a couple of other songs on this album.

I never tire of Girl from Ipanema. I've loved it from the time I first heard it on my transistor radio as a kid. AG's voice is so exotic and foreign. It's amazing that the single sat on the shelf for a year because the producer insisted on removing "Ipanema" from the title. These days, I have a better appreciation for Stan's warm saxophone solos. I'm sure a lot of jazz purists in '62 would have dissed him, comparing his mellow and simple sound unfavorably to Coltrane or Sonny Rollins, but it fits perfectly here. I've never been fond of male samba or bossanova singers (the Brazilians specifically) because their voices are a bit delicate for me, but again, it adds to the overall mood of the album.

This is one of those iconic albums where everything is lightning in a bottle - from Gilberto’s guitar, Getz’s sax and Astrud Gilberto‘s lovely voice. Also there’s the wonderful production and engineering captures the languorous sexy mood. The girl from Ipanema and Corcovado, are of course iconic bossa nova songs that still sound fresh and delightful today

The musicians show impressive restraint, but to be honest most of the Latin music I’ve fallen for on this list has a bit more vim and vigour to it. I was charmed at first but it quickly became indistinguishable from any old smooth background jazz. This would probably be the perfect soundtrack to a romantic candlelit dinner on a balmy evening in a South American restaurant. Unfortunately that’s not a situation I find myself in very often.

It's pleasant enough. That's it.

This album mostly recovers from her walk into the sea (looks straight ahead, not at he). That song, the first here, is such a high water mark. And yet, the album is filled with solid Stan Getz playing and holds its vibe. It's a pleasure to put on when you have the time and space to listen with intent because if you have it on as just background music it will only ever be "pleasantly same-y" aside from the Girl from Ipanema.

Jazz doesn't get much chiller or lovelier, now does it? Getz had as recognizable and pleasing a sound as anyone in jazz. It's suffered a bit from overexposure, perhaps, but it's legit, dry and cool and flowing. The earlier the bossa, the better.

Really pleasant sounding jazz/bossa nova album. Damn near a perfect album. Beautiful vocals, instrumentation, atmosphere, and all of these combine to make a great record. I can already tell this will be one album in my constant rotation. Perfect length to put on while doing some work in the background. I have nothing to say negatively about this record. 10/10

I enjoyed this album a surprising amount. It's not usually the genre I'd go for, but the combination of enticing vocals and unique instrumental arrangement made for a wonderful listen. I felt like I was in an artisan cafe in the middle Paris.

Me, the heartless fuck, the absolute buffoon, found this album to be very boring. I'm very rarely in the mood to listen to some bossa nova, and this day was no different. I can't even say this is "elevator music" as a gotcha, since "The Girl from Ipanema" is literally the cliché elevator music they use in movies. It's also the best song on the album and the only one that I can recall.

Groovy. This is what really kicked off the Bossa Nova craze, and all of the songs are pleasant and soothing. Though personally it’s not really much of a record to spin and find new stuff on from each listen. They’re much better jazz out there, though if you’re looking for a good Bossa Nova time, you’ll find it here.

This is a delightful album to listen to. Incredibly calming background music while working. Gotta remember Stan Getz next time I have a dinner party with some new friends so I can pretend like I listen to classy music all the time. All jokes aside, I think Evelyn would like this album the most.

The Girl From Ipanema takes me right back to high school, we did a jazz performance project and this was one of the songs I sang. I wasn't expecting to enjoy the rest of the album though. I'm not a huge fan of jazz but this one was really good.

Good music for doing work or just sitting around. Probably not an album I would revisit frequently, but this was very influential and is a good listen.

I listened to this on a stressful morning ahead of a mega day at work. It was really nice to zen out to - I appreciated it. Girl from Ipanema always is just a funny song to me. Like there's something comical about it I think!

This sometimes verges a bit too on the "easy" side of easy listening; I wish it had just a bit more bite to it. But what can I say, it's a classic for a reason... something about it just Getz me.

I mean, this is some really standard Bossa Nova type stuff, and I honestly think I'd lean in the direction of a low 3 here. But nothing was bad at all, just kinda meh.

Hey, one of the recently put on the generator albums, glad to see the missing ones are getting in here! Usually with an album like this, at this point it becomes common place for me to think not much more of the album other than being "Olive Garden music", but the fact that the vocals here are so pleasant really elevates this album a whole bunch for me. There are a couple times the saxophone appears a little too long for my liking, but it hardly hinders the album whatsoever. I completely understand why I've heard such high praises for this album.

My father would play this album often when I real young and Girl From Ipanema is one of the earliest songs I every recall enjoying. The rest of album is very good and one I've gone back and listen to often. Great cover art as well.

Maybe there’s something wrong with me, but I really dig samba. I could put just the guitar, bass, and percussion on an all day loop and be happy. And I love this record. Doesn’t mean it’s good, but I’ll rate it as if it is.

K.K. Bossa Nova - The sound here is very calm, cool, and collected. it reminds me of some the soundtrack for The Sims 1. The kind of music played at a rich soiree. This is exceptionally made, enjoyed the quick easy listen.

Bossa Nova is a mixture of Brazilian Samba folk music with American smooth jazz influences. And this might just be *THE* Bossa Nova classic. Smooth, ear-pleasing and very accessible music made for total relaxation on a summer evening, preferably in a hammock on a beach, with a coconut in hand and the sound of gently lapping waves in the background. Sometimes this album - and that's mostly due to the sax of Getz - drifts a bit too much into American Lounge music and you feel it might be played in a movie scene where they have to take one of those long 118 storey elevator rides. But it's a very enjoyable warm summer night album nontheless

This is some snazzy jazzy. It sounds like background music at some high falutin’ dinner. Extra credit for the foreign language adding to the pretentious feel. I enjoyed this a lot.

Solid jazz/bossa nova record. Can get kinda repetitive, but still a fun listen nonetheless.

A beautiful, calming, relaxing and soothing album. I love her melancholic voice. If I ever organise a coctail party in a hot summer night close to a beach this album will be played for sure.

Cool music to just chill with in the background, but not my main vibe.

Is there any music more soothing than this? I think not.

I have fallen head over heels in love with Brazilian music in the last few years and it's partly due to 1001 periodically putting me back into contact with it. This has an all star lineup with Joao Gilberto, AC Jobim, and, the real scene stealer, Astrud Gilberto. Not to mention the smooth sax fingerings of Stan Getz. A finely balanced blend of jazz and Bossa Nova.

Chill AF classic Bossa Nova Jazz goodness. I knew of the first track but might have enjoyed the others a bit more, perhaps just because they were unfamiliar. I felt like I had quite a classy Saturday night listening to this, sipping whisky.
