Reviews (page 4 of 13)
I was in a good mood when I sat down to listen to this and this only served to elevate that so it's getting a 5. Such an immaculate vibe, the music has such a close and intimate feel, very personal. Loved the vocals, didn't matter that I couldn't understand most of it cause it wasn't in English, I did not care, honestly I think that kind of enhanced the experience. Sounded really good for being recorded in the mid '60s. I would listen to this again. "The Girl from Ipanema" was the best track on here but it all was really solid.
this was just lovely. everything blended together to create a wonderful sound-vocals, instruments.
Love love love this album! Great playing all around and a pristine vibe. Makes me want to be on a Brazilian beach
This will be good.
Loved it. Was unexpectedly great.
This is a landmark album in jazz and bossa nova, with two of the greatest instrumentalists on their respective instruments at their best. From the second you hear the opening of The Girl From Ipanema, to the closing saxophone run on Vivo Sohando, this album is phenomenal. The music is so fantastically evocative of a time and feeling. The control of dynamics really helps texture the album, with Getz and Gilberto (as well as the accompanying instruments) exhibiting a great deal of restraint in when they pull you in and push you away. I know that a lot of people find bossa nova 'samey', but that core rhythm at the heart of each song is so integral to this sound/genre. I'm always blown away by how Getz & Gilberto are able to repurpose and recontextualise this rhythm to fit the mood of the songs. Antonio Jobim's sparing chord ornamentation and auxiliary parts help to harmonically tie the pieces together, especially during the lengthy solos throughout. Doralice, Para Machuchar Meu Coracao, So Danco Samba and Corcovado are standouts for me. I really love this album, and I pray to god that there is some more jazz on the way.
I am genuinely lost for words about how incredible this record is, it all feels like one song, and I didn't want it to end. This send me through a rollercoaster of emotions. I'm not going to be able to write an objective review here, because this album is just so fucking good it defies words. Portuguese sounds so beautiful over a smooth jazz background. I would kill to have heard this live in a dark bar and smoke a thousand cigarettes while enjoying this. Incredible. Seriously, I can't believe I've only heard snippets of this before.
A welcome change of pace for our list so far. This was some of the easiest listening we have had so far. I felt like the music was going to tell me to sit down and not work so hard during my first listen on the job. The easy nature does make some parts of the album bleed into each other without much to differentiate the tracks. But I would still say there are highlights, particularly any of the tracks including Astrud Gilberto's singing alongside the main male vocalist. I am not sure how to aptly describe it, but everyone here feels like they are giving the appropriate level of effort to this if it makes sense. It's more of a quiet confidence that the album exudes, with all of the individuals involved getting a track where I feel they really shine. This album really reminded me that I should probably make a Jazz/Bossa Nova playlist Highlights Everything (Particularly The Girl from Ipanema, both versions. Corcovado. Vovo Sonhando and So Danco Samba)
Nothing to criticise. Sounds lush in all conceivable ways. I saved this whole album before reaching the first half of the first track. Impeccable vocals and instrumentals. I couldn't resist listening to this again immediately after the last track ended. Buttery smooth sax.
one of the most accessible bossa nova releases of all time, and the release that really brought it into the limelight for the western world. an incredibly full saxophone, subtle and beautiful piano lines, all perfectly blended with gilberto's soft, hushed whisper-like vocals. this is the perfect album to relax to. the real highlight of the album for me is the girl from ipanema and corcovado, both of which feature astrud, the female vocalist. as good as gilberto is these slow, melodic tunes really are elevated by a female vocalist. this is an album thats hard to hate, and also hard to pick standout tracks from, aside from those listed. every song is just as good as the last. if i had to have one complaint, its that they didn't do anything offensive/experimental with the album, but bossa nova is already such a good genre, and this release is such a technically perfect example of the genre, that i really don't think they needed to.
The worst thing about this album is that it’s over so soon. If you described this as waiting room music or elevator music then sure boss’s nova is pretty subdued, but I wish they’d actually play it in waiting rooms because this album just flies past. You start listening then you look down and it’s been 40 minutes. A balm to my Britpop damaged ears.
MASHALLAH Finally an escape from Samsara/the Eighth Circle of Hell (Britpop) and into something else, anything else. Seeing as I don't speak Portuguese and I couldn't understand most of the lyrics, the best way I can summarise this album is like sitting in a homeware store in heaven. I can see how it might sound a bit elevator music-y at times to some people but this album is charming as hell. There is no real way to deride this album, it's masterfully crafted music that's fantastic to actively listen to or to set as background music to set a mood. No complaints. Phenomenal.
he has a gentle voice
Spanish jazz. Amazing singing. Well done.
Nice
Absolutely stellar! This type of authenticity the other Stan Getz bossa nova release on this book was lacking. Key tracks: The Girl from Ipanema Doralice Desafinado Corcovado Vivo Sonhando
beautiful. The only track I knew beforehand was "the girl from Ipanema"
LOVED this one!
This was just what I needed after a dull run of records. Gorgeous, mellow, summery joy on a hot day. All the voices and arrangements are beautiful, it's just a sweet joy.
THE example of recorded samba. It is always a joy to revisit this chill masterpiece.
Wasn't expecting to fall in love today
Soothing and relaxing without drifting to much into the easy listening terrain. This is how a chilled night in Rio must feel.
a classic!
Amazing album. My dad listen to this at home and Id always just stare at the cover which is a painting by Puerto Rican artist Olga Albizu. This is essily one pf the smoothest and relaxing albums ever recorded. Soothing voices, same beat for the most part but for some reason the uniform thing works.
Incredibly soothing and relaxing album with familiar songs. Vocals are matched so perfectly with the music. This is one you put on when you can’t go on vacation, but you close your eyes and can almost imagine you are on a beach in France.
Very dreamy
Excellence, and the exact type of music I needed to mellow myself out this morning. Welcome to the vinyl list, Getz/Gilberto
I just love this album. Give me this album, a sunny day and a cocktail or two and I’m happy.
Einfach schön.
Excellent! Very relaxing!
Nice chill jazzy sounds
4.6/5 listened 5x+ as packing up for move to GA.
Quintessential bossa nova. Desafinado is a bit of an acquired taste, but it's now the kind of tune that's just fun to try to hum to yourself, the dissonant harmonic intervals like a bitter apertif.
Comfortable lounge music
Great music but I don't speak Spanish
A classic album I love, but admittedly easier to appreciate its nuances while enjoying a cocktail in a mid century modern sunken living room. Corcovado is a personal favorite.
For a moment, I believed I was the Girl from Ipanema going walking.
It was a 5 the first time I heard it, it’s a 5 this time, and it will be 5 every time in the future.
Fantastic. Light and refreshing.
I've always liked Getz and this album is a classic. These saxophone licks are buttery smooth but complex enough to snap me out of working to listen.
Albums like these are why I enrolled in 1001albumsgenerator.com. Finding music that I haven't listened to before which are of the highest quality. 5 stars. Favorite tracks: The Girl from Ipanema, Desafinado, Corcovado, O Grande Amor
só gênios
Ideal summer listening. Favourite song: Desafinado
This album just gets better with time
An all time chill album.
Herregud. Vilken ton och flöde Getz har. En klassiker av en anledning.
Oh, I have been waiting a long time for this one. I have been in love with this album for decades, and it was so good to listen again today. Smooth bossa nova perfection.
This one is simply splendid!
Super smooth! A very very fine piece of work.
More bossa nova? Yes please to Getz/Gilberto. I’ve loved this album for years and years and years and it was pure pleasure to lose myself while lounging to the dulcet tones of this masterpiece.
Definitely in my top 20 jazz albums of all time. Love Bossa nova and it started here.
O grande amor The girl from Ipanema Corcovado Incroyable album
Una caricia al alma y los oídos
Now, I'm not going to go out and become a boss nova aficionado or anything, but I loved this album. Very chill and so evocative of the 60s.
Flawless and timeless classic.
The perfect bossa record🤌
Si. Mucho si. The way that sax is mixed almost got me pregnant.
This is great, perfect atmosphere music on a summer afternoon/evening. Makes me feel like I’m on holiday! Favourite track: The Girl From Ipanema
beautiful just goddamn beautiful
This album is great, the album that introduced the world to Bossa Nova. It is smooth, it is groovy…. It swings. It makes me smile. This seems like the kind of record I would’ve found in my father’s LP collection, and that’s a good thing. I was casually familiar with this record, but this listen reminds me that I really should own it. Preferably on vinyl, just because that’s how it was in 1964. 5/5
A fantastic journey through Ipanema.
Enchanting, languid, sultry - this album is a whole dreamy mood. Absolutely love it! Fave tracks - I'm a sucker for almost any version of "The Girl From Ipanema" and this version is _lush_. Also, really like "Desafinado"...
Yndisleg plata sem hefur verið lengi í uppáhaldi hjá mér. Tónlistarsögulega líka mjög mikilvæg. Allt frábært við hana.
Fantastisch album, baanbrekend, invloedrijk, en heel ontspannen
i have loved this album for years and i will love it for years to come. bossa nova is one of my favourite genres in the whole world. jazz is such an art.
Beautifully chill album that makes me wish I was on holidays
Yeah, this is just awesome. A 35 minute vacation from everything around you.
It’s so nice when you get one of your all time favorites. This is impeccable. One of the most perfect and beautiful records ever.

Dazzling
One of the great albums in the history of jazz. Nothing more to say.
I liked this a lot from the first listen, but it took a bit of time to love it, which I definitely do. Beautiful songs delivered woderfully. This is sublime.
There truly is no better music to put on when you are driving by the ocean with the windows down because it's 80 degrees in October for some reason. Immaculate vibes album.
Listening to this one right after a 150-minute live jazz band ordeal, also from this list. But rather than being fed up with jazz for the time being, the contrast helped showcase the strengths of Getz/Gilberto. For one, it shows how superior studio recordings are to live recordings in general. The wonderful production on this record allows specific elements to be highlighted, playing with different volume settings, and for each component to shine in it's appropriate role within the composition. Speaking of, compositions are stripped down, but tight enough to never sound too sparse. There's a simplicity that knows it can rely on the quality of its individual ingredients. I don't know if it's only the contrast to the previous album, but I ended up enjoying this one way more than I expected. It's definitely more of a 4.5 than a straight-up 5. But well, Getz and Gilberto caught me by surprise and it's simply a good album. And if this record popularized bossa nova, then without a doubt, countless students around the world should be thankful to Getz and Gilberto for pioneering the quintessential study music (+cozy cafe on a rainy day music).
this tickles everything I like about jazz. Getz the smoothest operator there is.
Love Stan Getz, I feel like I'm in a bossa nova club listening to this album
Iconic sound and album cover. Not all music needs to bite, sometimes you need that smooth caress.
Day115 - funny that this is the second album that has started with “the girl from ipanema” i didn’t know the bossa nova was something you should listen to. it’s really good
This may be my new favorite jazz album!
The pinnacle of Bossa Nova. When two great minds come together 1+1=3 and you get this.
brazilian topster
An immortal album. I love bossa nova.
A classic of the Bossa Nova genre. If you just need one Bossa Nova album it is this.
A beautiful, mellow Jazz album.
Romantico, sognante, raffinato. Che chill.
expert
The background music to the evening salon you'd be jealous to walk past... Windows open, Bohemia wafting onto the street...
Classic bossa nova album.
Bosa nova doesn't get much better. A perfect album for cooking dinner with friends with a glass of wine.
It’s da vibes
Cocinar con este album de fondo 10/10.
Hard to be negative about this. Gorgeously done. Ruined by poor imitators. Not their fault. 4.5
No justification necessary. Stands alone
Garota de Ipanema and assorted songs are absolutely classics
Ahhhhh sooo gut!!! Ich freue mi richtig uf da album . S macht eifach spass da z lose

Everytime I hear girl from Ipanema I do a lil dance wherever I am
i loved it soul soothing music , i wud listen and chill out again
Perfect chill vibe. Can imagine this being great for a sunny day! Based on the smoothness of this album, those men could probably swoon their way into most situations.
damn man
Feels like I’m on a sunset by the beach, drinking caipirinha, talking to friends and watching the waves come and go. On an end-summer day.
I enjoyed this album very much. It's mellow tranquility just totally hits the spot. Glad to have it in my album collection now. For the genre and what it is this is one resides on the peak.
Feels like a gentle hug for the heart, a light breeze flowing lightly in-between your brain creases, a warm evening walk in the tropical air when the sun has just set or the tranquil feeling of knowing that you're falling asleep and there's nothing left to worry about for today
Innovation incarnate. Like nothing the world had ever heard before (if you were American). I love this album so much, I can’t say a bad thing about it. It’s got such a good feeling and energy to it. I’ll never get bored of listening to this album. 5/5
Definitely one of the best jazz records ever made!
One of my favourite albums of all time, slaps in legit every single way possible, so amazing
awwww I love this first song! The Girl from Ipanema. Oh man I really like the Bossa Nova sound. 5 Stars.
Amazing! Pure and and beautiful! Jazz never to be topped!
Prachtig. Proost. FAVO: The girl from Ipanema, Para Machuchar..., So Danco Samba, O grande amor, Vivo Sonhando
Back to back absolute bangers this week. I love jazz despite how much I complain about getting it (even though this is Bossa Nova). Shhhh.
A treat for the ears.
I want to be Brazilian. I want to live in Ipanema and listen to this record over and over.
Ooooh .. she looks straight ahead not at me! An amazing historic album! this is a wonderful album and a classic - bringing in boss nova to Americans! Astrid's amazing sultry voice can stop anyone in her tracks. Getz's best work, (follow up album is all excellent) and Joao Gilberto is amazing! you will enjoy!
That’s it, I’m opening a jazz club
Memory lane
Stan Getz is so smooth. He and Gilberto turned a form of dance music into wistful mood music. Astrud's contributions just add the icing to the cake.
Well this is smooth.
I've always loved Samba, Stan, Joao and Antonio separate or together. ......and above all the dreamy Astrud. This is just like warm honey to my ears. The guitar, the sax and a contrast in singers too. This doesn't get any better.
The gold standard of the genre. Being married into a Brazilian family, this is a staple of our household.
5/5. This was so much more enjoyable than I was expecting, actually relaxing but not annoying. Some might call this elevator music, and yes there are similarities, but there is actually creative and well-played instrumentation here. And although there is a language barrier for most of the songs, it doesn't take away from the enjoyment because it is so smooth and quiet that it never overtakes the main attraction of the music.
The original muzak.
Getz/Gilberto Considered the album that popularized the Bossa Nova boom. Saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist Joāo Gilberto collaboration with the Grammy award winning song, "The Girl from Ipanema." Very relaxing album, not my usual listen, but I would listen to it again. 5/5
The birth of cool. Bossa Nova. My childhood memories of life with Mom and Dad and my siblings. This vinyl record on the deluxe stereo. Nice memories.
Sublime
first listen pure honey
Lovely. Relaxing and smooth, familiar but fresh.
😍 Fabulous! So moody and evocative.
Def belongs in the list
Every song just sounds so nice 9.5/10
Beautiful relaxing music. Love it. Imaging Parisian cafe scene.
Excellent!
Love a good samba album
The album cover is weird, my first non English album I think. It's apparently jazz and samba and I'm all here for it, because it must be good. First song, who doesn't know this title likee. I love his voice, it's soothing and much better than Bert Jansch, which I rated earlier and left me speechless in a bad way. I'm loving the vibe it's so a chill coffee shop cored. Omg the woman came in, it's even better now, and she's English too. The instrumental break is with a saxophone it's scratchy and enjoyable in a different way. Piano came in, I'm dancing to it, it's so funn. I loved this 9/10. Second song, even better start, weird gibberish it was and not it's another language(I don't want to assume what it is). This is the best selling jazz album, and I can't disagree why it is. The saxophone came in and it's slaying. There is a constant beat in the background too, makes it richer. He sang a little non lyrical at the end and I alsoo loved this 9.2/10. 3th song, this is giving elevator music, if it was as perfect as it could be, I'm complementing it basically. His voice is so satisfying, and the constant beat, I love it. Saxophone came in and I had goosebumps, this is The quality jazz I didn't know I needed. Lyrics are not much, but not like that is what matters in this album. I'm IN LOVE WITH THIS ALBUM ALREADY. Piano was only at the end. 10/10 basically, not even gonna say 9.? for no reason. 4th song, so relaxing, I feel like I'm having a grand, classical talk with someone in a so very chill place, like, it's just THAT album, definitely will help me study too. Not gonna write much, just gonna enjoy it. Seeya. 10/10 obvi. 5th song, oh English Lady came back. The woman voice fits the jazz more sometimes too, so the fact that she's here is quite nice. Again not gonna talk much, I usually review how the instruments come in and basically I like writing what happens in the song, but I'd rather enjoy it now. 10/10. I just read the 1 star complaints, and what I considered good on this, which was if elevator music was too good, or playing this at dinners, people saw it as a disadvantage. I mean this is much better than most punk rock albums, now that is pure noise, which I do like, but this one's otherworldly, it's still subjective I guess. I love the man's voice too, one of them didn't, I don't get it, I have heard bad voices and he isn't one of them. Also someone said, lyrics are pointless because it's Spanish and they doesn't understand them(not a grammar mistake), but they could have searched it online if so interested (not sure if it's available, but still) 6th song, didn't even notice it changed, since I was writing the paragraph above. Again amazing vibess, can't complain for a second, it is repetitive, but that makes it better. 10/10 all the wayy. 7th song, same good situation. So lovely to have found this album. The saxophone at the end was loudd. I am impressed by this song too, I just can't describe how I like it, it's just good, the beat, piano, saxophone, his voice, simple yet so great. Same rating as the others obviously. 8th song, I'm just too brought into this, I'm not gonna say anything, just the production is giving its best. 9th song, I thought album started over, apparently this is a shorter version of the first song, starting with the woman vocals. As good as possible. 10th song starts with woman voice. After the magnificent break he joined. It was too short, but oh well nothing lasts longer than it should. I wish the album had more songs, but I will check his other albums, idk if he has many, but still. Anyway I reallyyy loved this, unique genre, have heard it before, but not this good apparently. Just gonna shortly say it was a 5 star album all the way through.
Perfection
I would like to alter my brain so this is playing in there all day.
The Girl From Ipanema is the best song of all time
Very nice, cool vibe, bought immediately
based 9.6/10
beautiful
But "The girl from Ipanema" will ever be Sinatras Song.
Best jazz album yet.
Jazz standards get 5 stars
Quite literally has one of my favorite songs of all time on it. Lighting strike of an album. Took the world by storm.
Wonderful sound and voices
Definitely gonna be a candidate for my favorite album on the entire list
Mein Einstieg in den Latin Jazz.
The absolute premier bossa nova album. A fun fact that I found out after looking this up, bossa nova is Portuguese for "music that sounds like that one Getz and Gilberto song". I know they didn't write Girl from Ipanema (sorry Jobim, Moreas, Gimbel), but they may have been the second people to record it, and they one hundred percent are the reason that hundreds of people have recorded it now. "Desifinado" is probably my favorite bossa nova track of all time. Incredible how this whole album had such a similar sound throughout, and yet I never tired of it. Good stuff.
Bossa nova at its finest and apparently from reading the history, at one of its earliest moments. Relaxing, easy-listening, and the sax will make you fall in love. Great album.
Relaxing as hell, smooth as you like.
very gentle and beautiful - groovy and yet such sweet tones from the vocalists, the saxophone, etc.
This sun-soaked album, along with many others in the OG Bossa Nova movement are among the greatest of all time, but Getz & Gilberto are the godfathers. Add into the mix Gilberto's wife on occasional vocal duties, with all of her detached sensuality, and you've got an album that spawned an entire genre. Bossa Nova literally means "new style", and it's one that captivated the hearts of romantics around the world with sax solos that sound like drizzled suntan oil on a well-satisfied afternoon lover. 5 stars.
First track and ninth track are wonderful. The rest were well done as well, but not as well known. It was a great album.
the haze of dreams
Instantly loved this album and all of the subtlety of the instrumentation
Freaky but great
A quintessential bossa nova record. Getz's saxophone is angelic from beginning to end and Gilberto I mean... he defined the genre that would dominate Brazilian music for years to come. Absolutely love it.
What a great album. I truly liked it all.
Every song is a classic
Beautiful melody
Awesome record
Me gustó mucho
Nice and warm album. To enjoy a quite day, perfect to work from a cosy place
1001 times already. A giant. Astrud ‘s vocals are perfection. 5 stars
Immaculate vibes
Love this album. I've listened to this so much throughout my life. Classic.
Very enjoyable for a snowy Friday!
Very chill, easy listening post war jazz.
A classic album through and through. This is basically the blueprint of every coffee shop album from Starbucks that I listened to in my youth, which makes it sound more nostalgic than I realized. It's great napping music, too, which doesn't mean it's boring or white noise, but more that it's relaxing.
Gorgeous. Timeless.
Loved it
Wow, wonderful Brazilian music!
Warm and cool, even if it seems contradictory. The summer calm and the heart in love at the same time!
Perfect jazz album for relaxing with a brandy.
Wonderful!! I went on iTunes and purchased it.
Stand Outs- All of them... this is not a joke Lyrics- 4/5 (didn't understand some due to language barrier) Vocals- 5/5 Instrumentals- 6/5 (WOW!!) Vibes- 5/5 Overall 5/5 I'm writing this portion about halfway through the album. I turned this album on at night before I was getting ready for bed, and let me just say this is THE album for that "wind down evening" vibe. It's great to listen, have a glass of wine, and just sit and relax. Absolutely gorgeous piece of music.
Easy listening Latino style, remembering the sweet 60s.
Perfectly gorgeous.
Wunderbarer Barjazz
So. Fucking. Smooth.
Requires a very specific environment and mood, but it's about perfect for that limited scope
Perfect for a chill night
Vá. Þetta fílaði ég. Ég hef af og til hummað lyftulagið og svo er bara til plata með sömu stemmningu. Ekki of löng þannig að bara frábært.
Amazing, between Gilberto’s voice and classical guitar laying down the samba rhythms and Getzs sax it’s just lovely. 5/5
Such smooth music
good
Glorious/Gwonderful. 5 stars.
I love this record. It's a perfect album to have in the background at a cocktail party. I play it while making dinner at least once a week. It's fun, well played, and well recorded. A wonderful record that everyone should have.
Just lovely
Lovely harmonies and dissonances. Love the vocals as much as the samba.
Already loved this one.
Wait, this is amazing???
ay amo el portugues romantikom
Vibey: as a sucker for the whole genre of jazz this was a real experience. The was the instruments flowed into each other was smth I have never experienced before, really special. And how can I write this review without covering one of the greatest Latin jazz songs of all time, Girl from Ipanema. Truly exceptional.
very atmospheric album
Amazing jazz album will def revisit
Everything I want in a jazz album. Foreign language but many recognizable songs and truly what I’ve been looking for. 5/5
Wonderful, one of my favorites. Warm vibes.
Wow.
I loved this album! Its my first 5 star rated! I had heard 'The Girl from Ipanema' before but none of the others on this album - just such beautiful music and I can see myself coming back to this full album over and over! Fave track: The Girl from Ipanema (I had only heard the full English version before - I adored hearing the singing in Portuguese on this track and throughout the album)
Про первый альбом (№40 в нашем списке) Стэна я написал ощущения схожие с ощущениями от этого альбома. НО теперь за такое я поставлю 5, потому что это великолепно
Peak bossa nova, paar echt geweldige nummers erop. Het beginpunt als je deze muziek wilt luisteren, prachtige instrumentatie en mooie stemmen. Easy 5
Really great, chill jazz music. It feels like elite/elevated versions of coffee shop music.
Amazing album
Such a smooth and pleasant Bossa Nova record. Going on my must-have list!
Que disco foda. É por muito uma das melhores experiências musicais do Brasil. 5/5
saudade
Great music. Never gets old.
Warm happy and relaxing
Great vibes. Just a lovely, sleepy, breezy hang.
This is what if feels like to be a cat and snuggle in a warm blanket.
This is great.
I was given this album on a quiet weekend in fall. There could have been no better time. This album embodies the quiet morning of contemplation. Soft sweet voices, incredible saxophone, immaculate vibes. I will be returning to this one many times. My favorite track was the girl from impanema, the first version.
I love bossanova, and Girl From Ipanema is one of my all time favorites. I also really like how it’s recorded. Just a purely enjoyable record.
I absolutely love it!!! I never knew anything about this artist before today.❤️
One of the best Bossa albums for sure
Love it. Smooth and soothing, great to have on in the background while I unwind from a hard day.
This is some coffee house, late night jazz bullshit, and I'm all for this. Very relaxed, melodic, beautifully composed.
"The Girl from Ipanema" is the one you know, but this whole album is the perfect soundtrack to a cold night.
Super
this is the coolest thing ever.
Such a great jazz album. The bossa nova tracks are so smooth.
one of the classic jazz albums of ALL TIME
Incredible discovery, such a unique vibe. Will surely listen again.
Great smooth jazz with a wicked saxophone
One of my favorite albums
I mean, how could I not give it 5 stars?
#51 of 1001: This album is a 5/5 for me. I'm a sucker for the sax, and Stan Getz plays one hell of a sax. This album is the embodiment of smooth, easy listening. Gilberto and Jobim are the kings of bossa nova, and Astrud's voice is an extremely welcome addition. Top 5 for me so far.
Listened to while studying, very chill nice jazz
Classic. Considered the album that popularized bossa nova. Astrud as well. Short and smooth. 4.5
Girl from Ipanema!
Love this
Fantastic
Beautifully calming, Getz’s sax really stands out.
Ah, se ela soubesse Que quando ela passa O mundo sorrindo se enche de graça E fica mais lindo por causa do amor Tall and tan and young and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes, each one she passes goes ah When she walks she's like a samba that Swings so cool and sways so gently That when she passes, each one she passes goes ah Oh, but he watches her sadly How can he tell her he loves her? Yes, he would give his heart gladly But each day when she walks to the sea She looks straight ahead not at he Excellent sexy album. Why isnt sexy music more popular any more? 5/5
Goosebumps when i hear that
Mmmmm, I'm loving all the samba and bossa nova. Just a lovely listen.
Banger. The vibes are immaculate from beginning to end and this makes me wanna be a jet-setting business man from the 60's. Just livin life without a care in the world. As a former saxophonist, I appreciate both its role in instrumental pieces but even more so when it is used as a compliment to a singer's vocals. It's just not something you often see anymore. Stand out track: Corcovado
Girl from Ipanema is an absolute bop.
One of those perfect albums of sustained mood. I’d put in the same category as Disintegration even though they are miles apart musically. Probably the most perfect album for classy relaxing after a day of work. A musical drug. When I was a kid, I viscerally did not like the crass honking of certain saxophonists, and that led me—wrongly—to think I didn’t like the instrument itself. The playing on this album is so melodic, breathy, and tasteful, it has an erotic/narcotic flavor that I think only the saxophone could deliver. I never really got jazz, but I get this album. The lightly plucked bossa nova guitar provides the perfect pillowy backing for the saxophone, and the mildly intoned vocals. Everyone strives to set a certain tone and mood. And it succeeds perfectly.
J'ai tellement passé un bon moment, pas le choix. Stan getz fait vraiment mon type de jazz ! 5
20/10
One of my favorite jazz albums ever. So simple but has tons of feelings throughout. Put this on when making dinner with a glass of wine and dance
Sun drenched Sunday morning Brazilian jazz. Perfect with coffee on the terrace or sunset by the pool.
Two of my favorite people playing some of my favorite music? A great Friday for me !
Finally an album I know and love. This is na absolute classic and I don’t think I can describe the way it makes me feel. It’s just this overwhelming warmth and comfort it gives yet there’s so much melancholy in these melodies. My favorites - except for the obvious hits - are O Grande Amor (that sax tone!) and Para Machucar Meu Coracao. Also the cover art is perfect goes with the vibes of the album. If you’re completely new to this album - treat it as an entry point to the incredible wealth of Brazilian music. Go check out some of the albums by Tom Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Jorge Ben Jor, Nara Leao… it’s really worth it. Oh and this album makes a great soundtrack to a romantic evening with your significant other.
Loved it.
Muss man in der Tat gehört haben. 34 zu kurze Minuten Schönheit.
Wow, a true classic that I still listen to every year.
Outstanding. What an incredible composer. Loved every note of this.
Easy 5 stars, I love this album so much. Super chill and it transports you to a far away place, where the sun always shines and the beaches are always beautiful.
Loved all of the beginning, the middle and was mixed about the end. It felt shorter
Absolutely exquisite
Really cool album did not m ow about Stan Getz!
The whole reason anybody has even heard of bossa nova, and still blows every other record in the genre away
Own on Vinyl
Classic bossanova.
Classic.
You know the phrase “music transcends language”? They were talking about this album. Just phenomenal. Peak Jazz.
5 star from the first track! Again, Latin music is God sent!
Superbe musique d’ambiance, subtile. Une virtuosité qui ne cherche pas à se signaler, mais à célébrer la musique
BL: Aware of this Getz/Gilberto project. I have “the girl from ipanema” on my playlist (the version off the deluxe issue with Astrid Gilberto featuring), so very excited to hear this record. AL: an excellent record. especially loved listening to this with headphones on and dolby atmos mixing. Getz gentle voice alongside Astruds apperances and the soulful yet gentle jazz backing from Getz & Gilberto, truly revolutionary stuff and still holds up in my opinion, as one of (if not the) best jazz album of all time. FT: "the girl from ipanema" "doralice" "corcovado" "Só Danço Samba" 5/5
Pure magic
Absolutely magnificent. Loved every moment.
What a great album, I enjoyed this way more than expected going into it!
Give me all the Bossa Nova jazz
Relaxing, light, fun, pleasant.
Samba
Really pleasant sounding jazz/bossa nova album. Damn near a perfect album. Beautiful vocals, instrumentation, atmosphere, and all of these combine to make a great record. I can already tell this will be one album in my constant rotation. Perfect length to put on while doing some work in the background. I have nothing to say negatively about this record. 10/10
Great listened to it twice
Super pleasant. 9/10
I think this is my first time listening to the album with headphones on. Interesting how they use the different channels throughout the songs
Super solid album, and a great album for folks who are interested in jazz and looking for an easy entry point
Hey, one of the recently put on the generator albums, glad to see the missing ones are getting in here! Usually with an album like this, at this point it becomes common place for me to think not much more of the album other than being "Olive Garden music", but the fact that the vocals here are so pleasant really elevates this album a whole bunch for me. There are a couple times the saxophone appears a little too long for my liking, but it hardly hinders the album whatsoever. I completely understand why I've heard such high praises for this album.
Och Astrud hade typ bara sjungit hemma i köket innan, när hon brassade köttbullar.
jazz :3
Very nice!
Quiet, seductive jazz. Perfect for hanging out with your special one. 4.5/5
Classic album - funny that this is Getz's most famous even though he made much better recordings. Love that this is the album that introduced Jobim to the United States.
Hearing all the classic sounds that have found their ways into soundtracks, and global memories was a lovely experience. We humans are the definition of reuse.
88/100 God what a peaceful album this is. I’m at work right now on a cloudy day at a marina gas dock listening to this album while sitting next to the water. Perfectly done bossa nova although it does get kinda samey. Maybe that’s because I don’t speak the language lmao so I can’t hear any lyrical differences. Some songs have sax which it’s always amazing to hear it, and others have a nice accompanying piano. This album is loved by many and for good reason. It can put you at peace in an instant. Just great stuff all around, and I love it.
class & gas. may be the bias speaking, but anyone who reduces this classic to muzak simply lacks the ear for it. a delicious listening experience all around 4.5.
This was a very soothing, calming album that provided beautiful saxophone segments and this serves as a album to sit and listen to or to slow dance to. Astrud Gilberto provides a very beautiful voice throughout some of the songs. The references to places in brazil are also very nice. Does get a bit repetitive but still a great album
Classic for a reason. It’s been imitated so often it’s hard to remember how original it was.
i love bossa nova. girl from impanema is a perfect song
Hell yeah more non-Anglo music Bossa Novas are so cool, just an incredibly captivating pattern that almost guarantees I’ll like a song. Vocals are great, instrumentation is great, and the overall sound is just this wonderful blend of Brazilian jazz. Don’t really have many complaints about this one, little confused why there were a couple of copies of some songs on here so I guess it felt a little repetitive at times? That’s about all I can think of Not quite a 5 but damn close, I feel like if I listened to this on a beach with a cold drink in my hand this would be the greatest album of all time but alas
lovely and chill. great with morning coffee
Wonderful. This is such an incredibly enjoyable album to listen to, a real treat after a rather lackluster previous week. I’ve marked a few tracks as favorites, but honestly, I could do that for the entire album. What a fantastic record. It features a blend of jazz and samba (which, admittedly, neither have ever been one of my favorites) topped with a touch of soul. It puts you in a summery mood… this is the quintessential summer evening album for sitting out on the patio.
Very calming and provides the atmosphere of a tranquil home.
The Girl From Ipanema - 4.5/5 Doralice - 4/5 Para Machucar Meu Coração - 4/5 Desafinado - 4/5 Corcovado - 4/5 Só Danço Samba - 4/5 O Grande Amor - 4/5 Vivo Sonhando - 4/5 This falls a bit too much into the "easy listening" category of music at times but this is still really well produced. I wish there was a bit more "oomph" added to this, but this is perfect to put on and just relax. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Girl From Ipanema
Don't know much about boss nova, but a good, fun time. Glad I got to listen to the start of the genre's popularity.
A great bossa nova jazz album that was the first non-American album to win the Grammy for Album of the Year. This is the music I want to be played at a sleepy beach bar on a beautiful day. Not super complicated, very relaxing Brazilian jazz with a little bit of dance flair here and there. Really enjoyed this album, it’s a solid 4/5 for me.
yes
A perfect cocktail party album. I dig!
Smooth Latin grooves for a hot summers day
When it hits, it hits
Felt like I was in a soundscape or a resturant, more chilled vibe, think it found me on the correct day.
