Chilling in a smoky café right now in my head fr fr Faves: The Girl From Ipanema, Só Danço Samba

Very jazzy - this is totally music that I would cook dinner to

Very easy listening. Some nice grooves. Would listen again👍

This is so calming I actually love it so much.might be my new go to jazzy album

I like it

Yay, a Brazilian album. Hopefully more from 70s are on this list! Cool bossa nova. 4 Heard before? Yes Owned: Yes: 36/139 (25%) Will I get? Already have

Fantastic chill Brazilian jazz. What more would you want?

I was really thrilled to hear a bossa nova album!

I know this one well, great dinner making music. Maybe my favorite album to make dinner to in fact!

I think I’ve fallen for Astrud Gilberto. Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado are a class apart because of her, but the whole album is beautiful.

Opens with the beyond cool "The Girl from Ipanema" and the vibe is set from there onwards. Bossa Nova is always a cool sound and this way utterly delightful.

Un buen album relajante la verdad

nice jazzy tunes.

This put me in such a chill state, really liked it.

Really nice, chill bossa nova. Girl from Ipanema sets the tone and the whole album makes you feel like you’re winding down gently after a hot summer’s day.

Jazz pop from the 60’s. Quintessential. You’ve heard these songs even if you don’t know it. Great album, solid listen through.

Reminds me of Brazil! A little slow for my taste but we were fans nonetheless

Pure bliss. 4/5 . Doesn't warrant many revisits

So fucking smooth, give me an icy cold bev on a beach somewhere with this shit playing on the background oh yeasss. I should listen to more bossa nova. 8/10

Smooth and relaxing. Girl from Ipanema shines here

What a relaxing album! I really enjoyed having this on as background music. 4

Fabulous bossa nova with that unmistakable Getz sax over the top of it. Great to listen to, easy listen, nice background.

Delightfully smooth album to listen to while having coffee with my love on a Sunday morning.

Es hilft, dass ich aktuell alles mit Saxophon gerne mag. Gutes Album für einen langsamen Samstagmorgen.

A classic. The thing that saves this from going too far into the deep end of cheese is probably the singing in Portuguese, lol. There are other jazz albums I like more, but this a pleasant summer album to enjoy a banana pancake brunch to.

Well chill

listening when: in the morning omw to pilates thoughts: the cutest elevator music ever rating: only rating so low because this genre isn’t in my normal realm of every day listened 6/10 as a listen 9/10 as music

Smooth and jazzy, cool and classic. This was a great thing to listen to on a chill morning.

A bit sickly smooth at times. But the grooves are undeniable.

Excellent jazz record - boss of the bossa nova sound

Stan just Getz me man. Nothing wrong with listening to a little love making with a saxophone.

Chill vibes

VIVA PORTUGAL favorite track: Girl from Ipanema

I liked it

I like this a lot. It's a once a year listen, for sure. For that and the iconic album art -- 4 stars.

Blir ikkje særleg meir avslappande enn dette

This is almost literally hold music or elevator music. And it probably says something about me getting older that... I actually quite like it. It's soothing and very well made, and it's really good for focusing or background noise.

The album that birthed the Bossa Nova craze. This album was so massive it convnced Francis Albert himself to embrace it. 4.5/5

Jazz is fun always 4/5

Kunhan tää lista on kahlattu eka läpi. Eli sitten se on jo unohtunut lupaus, mutta tässä kohtaa iso huurteinen nelonen pöytään eikä sitä ainasta keskaria.

Have not heard. I knew one of the songs. Chill and easy listen.

my fave music to work to. so nice

Listening to this while driving around… my car smells like the 48 meatballs in my passenger seat… Ratatouille vibes

Genius at work. Although you do need a cumfy pair of slippers and a cup of cocoa to enjoy it at its best.

I already listened to this one. Very nice and fun.

A very specific mood is required for this one, but in the perhaps ~5% of cases where the stars align for me, this album works a treat. It gives off the feeling of being engineered for a light plod at dusk, or to be listened to over some mulled wine in a tiny, creaky, tucked away bar that few ever seem to visit. A warm, but also strangely distant listening experience in some ways.

Dieses Album war ein großer Schritt für den Jazz: Adaption lateinamerikanischer Rhythmen und Melodien. Ich mag den Saxophon-Sound von Stan Getz - den Gesang finde ich aus heutiger Sicht zu lapidar.

A worldie and I like every track but I must be in the mood for it

Inspired me to drink a second cocktail. Or possibly a third. But that doesn't mean it should be dismissed as cocktail jazz, because this is just so good.

Great musicians, interesting music, but not a style of jazz that I will go back and listen to often.

The music of my student flat!

Of course there’s better, but for a lot of people, this is a crucial gateway into bossanova and maybe Brazilian music or jazz as a whole. It gets nothing but love with any easygoing audience.

Good ahh album. Listened to this in exactly the right environment (coffee shop). The girl from impanema is an all time banger

This was fun and had me bouncing a little in my seat,

The grooves on this album are really gentle to the ear. Really enjoyable, especially on a Monday morning.

Now THIS is jazz.

A wonderful slice of bossa nova, a pleasure to listen to.

Jeg var redd for at dette skulle være litt sånn ugh latin-musikk med kjipe rytmer og kjipere vokal, men heldigvis ikke. Chill af, som skapt for en søndags formiddag.

Veldig behagelig album! Ikke hva jeg forventet

This exceeded my expectations and I actually really liked this. I think I generally prefer music with lyrics. Would like to listen to this at a beach bar.

Loved it. I wish I were in a cafe in Europe in the 60s listening

This is pretty fantastic, the only reason I’m stopping shirt of 5 stars is the vocals. Don’t get me wrong they’re not bad but I just don’t feel like it adds much to the pieces. I most likely will be back as this is one my daughter loves.

A whole mood.

The joys of my eclectic tastes have me listening to this right after some brutal death metal. Practiced over many years though, my ears can handle these sorts of tectonic shifts. International success of Bossa Nova may have been temporary but, out of context, this album, a major factor in that success, just sounds timeless. I may not understand Portuguese, but to my ears, the language is actually melancholia. The beautiful vocals of both João and Astrud are ably matched by Stan’s sax as the melodic salve that belies the apparent sadness at the heart of the songs. Not even the crackles of my ancient beat up copy can stop the beauty of these recordings from enduring, 60 years on.

Albums like this are why I started doing 1001 Albums. I never would have picked this up on my own, but I’m so glad I did.

So nice to listen to. You listen to it and you say, “Oh yeah. That’s so nice.”

On the surface, it's tasteful music for Mad Men execs to drink their bourbons, throw up on carpets, and harass women to. But as overplayed and clichéd as The Girl from Ipanema has become, it was the gateway for millions into Brazilian music and the playing still sounds as slick today as I imagine it did back then.

Latino jazz, classic smooth

Great background chill music

Sounds like perfection in audio form but that kind of annoys me sometimes

A true classic, and an excellent album to put on in the background during a get together.

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background So Soothing

Smooth jazz, easy listening. Great for studying/working, chill/end of night hangs.

Laganicaaaa za navit u pozadini, nicee

This is THE bossa nova album of all time. Sure, it might get repetitive at times, and maybe it's a bit easy on ears but with that being said it's...good enough for me. Can't go wrong. 4.00-4.50/5

didn‘t finish it, but honestly excellent first tunes!! the girk of Ipanema? phenomenal

lovely!

Really nice, enjoyable to listen to. It's kind of funny that I got Bossanova right before a Bossa Nova genre album. I wasn't necessarily excited about seeing saxophone in the album description, but it managed to be pretty good in spite of that.

Classy bossa nova/jazz you'd put on if you invited a girl around for dinner. The first song you will have heard in movies, probably around the seductive looking heroine. Great song. The saxophone is delightfully jazzy, without being too erratic. The rest of the album follows the similar theme. The singing is all very relaxed and I felt classy for listening to it. 4 stars.

This album is like the last night of a holiday in a Mediterranean town. Your friends have all taken earlier flights home, so it’s just you now, with one evening to kill before your flight in the morning. As the sun sets, you walk along the tree-lined river bank, and decide to stop at a nearby cafe for an espresso (a habit you have become a fan of during this trip). You sit at a table outside, under the warm light of a lamppost. This is quite a sleepy town, so there’s not much going on, aside from an elderly couple going for an evening stroll, and a woman cycling home from the library. She rides on the footpath as the cobblestone road would be a nightmare on her bike’s suspension.

Extremely soothing. Therapeutic even

synonymous with mid-’60s cosmopolitan culture — think smoky lounges, cocktail parties, modernist apartments. Like something out of "Mad Men"

Lovely stuff

Really quite a fun listening experience, quite solid throughout but the second half was a bit slower then the first

Et perfekt morgenalbum. Må hørra seinere igjen for å ikkje vær biased

Chill, mellow, peaceful, smooth. Perfect pairing for a cup of coffee in the morning, or a bike ride on a sunny day, or walking around a neighborhood, or hanging out at the beach.

I really enjoyed *Getz/Gilberto*. It’s chilled, innocent, and relaxing, with such a warm, easy vibe. The whole album is beautiful to unwind to, and *The Girl from Ipanema* is a true classic that never gets old.

Clásico. Jazz del que siempre gusta oir

The only thing I don't like about this album is the male vocals, but that alone drops it down to four stars for me. Fortunately, I love the saxophone and the voice of Astrid Gilberto, along with the smooth, easy-listening nature of the tunes. making it a very solid four-star album indeed.

I am a fan of how relaxed this makes me feel. When the sax hits for the first time in The Girl From Ipanema, it rattles me. The rest of the album is pretty good too and I had a feeling that this was going to be higher up on my ratings, but some middle tracks lose me out a bit. It ends strong enough for me to say that I had a great time with it. Great vibes for high times (8/10, 4/5 on this scale)

Really nice background music.

I love the rare occasions where I don't know the album, but I do know multiple songs on the album. I really enjoyed listening to this one.

Some classics here. Great background listening.

Very chill and fun to see the origin of bossa nova!! A little samey at times

What a pleasure! Really good, such a pleasant listening experience!

No need for a song by song breakdown or to point out any specific song at all. Just make a mimosa on the morning of your day off and kick your feet up for this one. Front to back great vibe

Not something I'll return to often, but it certainly does a wonderful job of transporting you to a peaceful evening on the beach with a daquiri in hand. Quite different to the chilly English morning I'm currently dealing with.

Well, this record definitely passes the vibe check.

dum dudum dudum du duuu du dum

im not a fan of jazz but this album is so smooth and relaxing without being boring or dull, surely ill make an exception for this

Getz & Gilberto. Great combo and featuring Jobim as if the other two werent enough! Short album. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Gilberto’s singing. So cool calm and seemingly effortless. Its so intimate, like hes just talking to you. Not on this album but his S’Wonderful is a great example of this. Cross Getz’s jazz sensibbities and emotive/breathy sax, with Gilberto’s strong easy singing tone over gently plucked guitar, Astrud Gilberto chipping in with vocals that are almost the human equivalent of Getz’s sax sound, Jobim the father of bossanova composing most somhs and putting in some meloncholic and thoughtful piano (O Grande Amor), its truly a supergroup. But unlike a supergroup like, say Cream, there doeant seem to be a battle of egos going on here.

Recognized a lot of these tunes. Great Sunday morning record to put in. Really enjoyed it. Highlights: "Girl from Impanema" and "Corcovado"

Solid. Nice vibe music.

It's a vibe. Love it.

Learning the tenor sax right now so this was very fun to listen to Favorite: Desafinado

8.5/10

I LOVE this album. I can listen to this 8 times in a day on repeat whilst at work and I don't get bored. Unfortunately Getz was a creep and so loses out on a star.

I've known about this album before as the thing that brought bossa nova to the masses (like our grandparents generation who had vinyl probably definitely had this one) and certainly have heard the opening track but hadn't gone much further than that with it - despite my initial gut feeling that this is "muzak-ish" (which maybe it kind of is) there's really a lot to love here. The hushed intimate production, how in the forefront the vocals are and some of the melody voicings, the sax tone, all great. You can envision yourself in the 60s in a smoky, dimly lit bar by Copacabana sipping a capirinha and subtly nodding along to the vibes. It's just all so calming, maybe the critique is that it's too much so by the end, and the bossa nova pattern gets a bit repetitive, but overall not a lot to dislike here at all. Can see this being in the "calm jazz afternoon" rotation for sure!

Another sunny Sunday here in Western Australia. I'm sipping coffee and have the NRL game on tv with the sound on mute so I can listen to this album. I am relaxed and super chilled. I've never heard of this album before now. It's timing is perfect for my lazy Sunday. Anyone but the Storm ! NRL ...

Pleasant, easy listening jazz

Smooth AF

#1-11.09.2025

A classic album, I really enjoyed listening to it. Stan Getz has a pretty interesting Wikipedia life story if you're curious.

lovely peaceful album

Went in thinking it would be quite corny, but found it very listenable. That said, more something to have on in the background .

Great album, after U2 we needed improvement. Have heard a bunch of these before and really enjoyed listening to the whole album.

Interesting, and that’s all I’ll say

Sounds like French Si and G

Im the furthest thing from a Jazz expert so I couldn't even tell you the difference between good and bad jazz. That being said it made for a relaxing commute to work and the vocals and brass were all well done. Is this my gateway jazz album that will transform me into a crazed brasshead? No, probably not but did I enjoy listening and fantising about being in a fancy suit, smoking a cigar, and drinking brandy in an uptown, classy jazz bar? You bet I did.

Nice and smooth

Good bossa nova.

Unbelievable jazz with total Latin vibe. Like a hot summer day on the beach.

i enjoyed this a lot! i feel like such a dope trying to articulate my thoughts about (mostly) instrumental music that i don’t already have a personal connection to but idk i just found this really pleasant to listen to.

Oo jazz baby. So cool, I dig your mellow tunes. Great after dinner smooth… I like it baby, bring it on in! Get your mid century on.. two weeks after my worldwide debut. I give it four stars!

Even though jazz and bossa nova aren’t usually my thing, what I heard from Getz/Gilberto was so smooth and enjoyable that I’m tempted to track down a physical copy

quite pleasant. not very familiar with bossanova but this seems to be that mixed with some jazz. ultimate cafe vibes. would explore more of this bossanova world based off of this.

Really pleasant listen. Cool to know where 'elevator music' came from, and I understand why it was so popular haha.

Vibes vibes vibes. Not quite perfect but great music to chill out to.

Smooth, soulful bossa nova music to unwind to. How can you hate it?

This grew on me as the album went on. Really good as background chill vibes.

Peaceful and relaxing. Great album.

An easy 33 minutes

I would like a Piña Colada right now please. 4.5/5

A lovely listen. Very, very chill.

Great bossa nova album from THE bossa nova kings.

Smooth and silky, without leaving melody at the door. Really enjoyed it.

Just gorgeous gorgeous vibes. I'm floating. Imagine having a vocal style like Astrud Gilberto. The coolest. The Girl from Ipanema is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

Really enjoyed, could hear a lot of influences, would share with most

Such an excellent, chill vibe and an album that definitely benefited from listening with headphones.

Chill album with a nice portuguese vibe. Definitely recommended on a hot summer night

I love jazz

I come into this album with a disadvantage, as I do not speak the languages being sung on this album. Despite this, this was a heavenly listen. I was already a fan of bossa nova/brazilian jazz, and this my probably my new favorite album out of that genre. The instrumentation is sublime, and the vocals, while incomprehensible to me, are still heavenly and complement the stylings of the rest of the album.

Sublime 7.5/10

This is the type of jazz I like to get from here. The type that’s nice and smooth, but doesn’t end up becoming boring or forgettable. I remember getting Stan Getz earlier into this project and thinking this his was missing a little something. Apparently that something was Latin vocals. This album would definitely make the best lounge music. Favorite track: The Girl From Ipanema Other hits: Doralice, Desafinado, O Grande Amor, Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)

Smooth listen! 4/5

Bang, Girl from Ipanema straight off the bat. Great to hear where this song originally sat. The rest of the album flows very nicely from this, an extension of the song. Corcovado, with Astrud Gilberto singing too is a lovely track, although she only sings for a little bit. All of these tracks feel quite similar, each lovely, but I don't notice much difference between them. Lovely album to have on in the background for cooking/dining/chilling.

One of the more fun old-school albums I've heard. Very horns + guitar heavy with some solid vocals, added it on Spotify and really do want to give it a few more focused listens

Hard to finish. Songs came across as 60’s virtue signaling. Song structure wasn’t interesting.

Very chill jazz album. I really enjoyed some of the songs. I was never that bored.

First time I ever thought of downgrading an album because of the hit. I’ve never really liked the girl from Ipanema, but this album is a vibe.

I love sax and in my life i would like to learn to play the saxsofone

Iconic, sure.

4.8 Very accessible jazz album and a good place to start if you want to get into jazz, every single song on here bangs its a classic

Entirely pleasant. In fact, after listening to this I found a long bossanova playlist on Spotify and just let it go all day in my house.

Great jazz album, the vocals are so warm and the instrumentation is so chill, Girl from Ipanewa is absolutely Amazing.

DUUUDE PEAK i love this album already i even own it on vinyl no notes really it's an eight outta ten for me i love this

So chill

Stan Getz was a sax player, and on this album you can hear his fuzzy sax sound. This album was made during his bossa nova period, and includes some Brazilian musicians. I can imagine walking into a bar on a large cruise ship and hearing this music. It’s a jazz combo with vocals, but the album sounds very cool in my opinion.

Lovely

Klassiker. Gehört in jede Sammlung, auch wenn man nur ein einziges Bossanova-Album besitzen möchte..

Tasteful. Clear to see why it’s a classic. Lots of room in the mix and swagger in the band. Getz plays sax in an effortless series of phrases and the vocals are chilled and a little exotic. In keeping with yesterday’s Sadé, this is something to hear at a dinner where the wine is better than the risotto and you’re hoping for a big dessert to make up for the fact that the starter was soup. Lovely, but really, really tasteful.

Some great stuff going on here, most notably the crystal-clear production (by 1964 standards). Gilberto's vocals are something pretty special. They're soft, eloquent, silky-smooth, and seemingly transcend language barriers, conveying characters from tired party hosts to lamenting ex-lovers. The sax is the liveliest instrument throughout the record, jumping between chords rapidly in a way that tells you these guys are professionals. But they don't try to flaunt their virtuosity, which I can respect. Its quiet complexity also means it works well for both background and close listening. The Girl From Ipanema is the clear standout and I can definitely see why it was selected as the lead single. Crisp vocals, a catchy chorus (kind of unexpected for bossa nova/jazz), a simple repeated piano riff. Although, listening to the remaining tracks, you could feasibly describe all of them like this. Whoops. The piano and keyboard parts really define this bossa nova sound that, for its time, was very nearly a swan song for the genre. Getz and Gilberto propelled jazz back into the mainstream music sphere with this record and its predecessors "Jazz Samba" and "Big Band Bossa Nova" - but this record takes it to more accessible and (dare I say it) radio-friendly territory. The sound is fairly minimalist, lessening the danger of abrasive elements that some people might fault in rock'n'roll records of the time. But it also seriously limits the ways in which tracks on the album can vary from one another, demonstrating the most common problem I have with albums on this list. For 5 stars, an album needs to do something pretty out-there, and the easiest way to achieve that is to present a variety of sounds and styles. Not many artists/bands do that, so doing it is a surefire way to stand out. 4/5 Key tracks: The Girl From Ipanema, Desafinado, Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)

Ayyy I had the sinatra with one of these guys before and I enjoyed that but this is pure. Its so laid back and just nice. I could just put this on and get an ice cold drink and chill in a cabana for a while. Bossanova I think but I know nothing about this style of music. All I know is I like it. Not sure what else I need but I got that

excelente sonido, aunque cansa un poco la combinación de melodía vocaly después la misma melodía (con minimas variaciones) hecha en el saxofon.

Great background album for a chill afternoon.

Good vibes

Excellent mellow jazz, with consistent vibe to either relax to or as great background music for parties.

I was in the mood for jazz

The postcard picture of carioca life

Pretty lovely stuff

Very lovely bossa nova. I'd rate 5 stars if there was a bit more variety in moods and if the volume mixing was a bit better.

ovo je jako čil

Often, if I listen to something and sort of forget I am listening to something thats a bad thing. In this case, I think its a good thing. Milton Banana.

One of my favourite albums of all time is a later one from Stan Getz somehow not featured in this. Still, this album was fantastic and a rare example of appreciation and not appropriation

gefällig

Over the past few years I have developed a massive love for this kind of sparse jazzy/bossa nova style, mostly in the form of asian electronic music, so hearing this was wonderful. The songs are beautifully written and performed, nothing feels out of place or overplayed and the minimalism makes the album feel intimate and cozy. I really enjoyed it and was somewhat sad to have it end so quickly.

Yeah I low-key fuck with Bossa Nova so I actually quite enjoyed this. Nice length, doesn't come close to overstaying its welcome, and I could listen to it in an elevator OR on the beach. Splendid. The Girl from Iponema (8/10) Doralice (7/10) Para Muchachor Meu Coracao (7/10) Desafinado (8/10) Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars) (8/10) So Danco Samba (7/10) O Grande Amor (7/10) Vivo Sonhando (7/10) 7.4/10

Lowk fw the bossa nova and fun vocals, little too easy of a listen and kinda blew through without really hearing anything distinct but I did love what I heard. Will start delving into the genre!

klasik, mada ipak pored hitova malo monoton

Some of these songs are so familiar now, it's good to hear them in a more original form.

Like "Kind of Blue" and "Timeout," this falls into the all-time classic jazz record category. I love Getz's beautiful warm tone and the singing through out is buttery--especially from Astrud Gilberto.

I was obsessed with this album one Summer road tripping through Italy. Found it from the first track but the whole album is such a vibe.

Very chill late night album. Sounds like animal crossing music

Nice easy listening album

Calming jazz album, I haven’t listened to much jazz so it was a nice detour from my usuals

Very relaxing music, feels like drinking cocktail at the beach in the sunset. Wouldn't consider melodies/songs that legendary but definitely have a spark.

Feels somewhat apt to get this album on the hottest day of the year. Threw open the windows, made an ice cold drink and for a moment forgot about the fact I'm meant to be working. I know some people deride this as "elevator music" or easy listening, but you know what, sometimes you do just want something that sounds great and goes down easy. And honestly this manages to capture such a specific vibe and mood.

Girl from Ipanema good Backing track sounds elevator music-y Kinda relaxing tbh The sax kinda slaps ngl Really nice throughout, not really a dip in quality Corcovado is such a smooth listen

Cool and breezy. Add to chill out playlist. Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado are nice.

Good chill lounge music. Not sure what makes it better than others but it's an me to start with, ready to have on in the background on repeat

Favorite song: The Girl from Ipanema Astrud Gilberto has a beautiful voice, I really like the songs that she's in. The cool sax creates a very calming feeling throughout the whole album. I really like jazz.

I really enjoy this...in fact we have some of these tracks on a cocktail lounge mix cd from the 90s. I feel like to thoroughly enjoy it though, you need to be sipping a cocktail in a dark corner with your lover.

Just beautiful! This is the second album in a row that I will actively seek out the next time I go to the record store.

It's hard to say anything about this album that hasn't been said before. Another MUST LISTEN album for any fan of the genre. -Germoses Good elevator music - SC

A classic album and super enjoyable.

I don’t listen to a lot of foreign language albums. This one really was beautiful. I started out in my car, and I wasn’t quite feeling it. But I put it back on when I was doing some house chores, and it was magical playing in the background. Such a lovely album

Not my favorite style of music but definitely a very good listen

Loungy and unrushed - smooth jazz but not saccharine - vocals are fantastic

Very enjoyable album , relaxing & soothing.

wonderful, joyous, exquisite

Love the vibe. Perfect “easy listening” album”. Great ambience for a lazy weekend day at home, or to put on while doing household chores. Don’t really care for the tone of the sax. Too “windy”. But that’s the only complaint. Warm feeling, perfect for a summer evening. Low-key sounds like the same song repeated 8 times… not a bad thing. Would like a bit more variety in tempo/energy, still a vibe though. Have to be in the “mood” for it, as there’s only one mood. Mood: smooth, calm, warm. Track 6 has the best sax solo. Shorter runtime is a plus. Feeling a strong 4.

Excellent bossa nova example.

Very Hip

What a lovely listen! The jazz wasn't too complex and quite soothing. It made me want to be on a bistro patio.

Love the texture and sound. No electric gizmos and pure talent on show. Some expert playing. Very smooth.

Perfect background music for a romantic dinner

Very pleasant album. I also love seeing artists like Sza being influenced by these types of albums

So hot, it's cool.

Had this on repeat. Great upbeat bossanova.

not sure I like bossa nova. I like Jazz, but I feel like I need to be either a lovely level of drunk, or at least really high to appreciate it. Not sitting at my email job under florescent lights. That said! I really did enjoy this album, and after doing some research you can see why it is so important, not only to the genre, but to music, generally. For me, it's a 3/5, but a 4/5 wouldn't be crazy.

I started listening to a lot of Brazilian music this year and while I have been very familiar with The Girl From Ipanema obviously, I haven't gotten a chance to listen to this in full - yet. It's really good!

Very enjoyable

Good album; the blend of jazz and samba on this album is kind of perfect for me. Girl From Ipanema has been done by so many artists, but I think I like this rendition the best.

Pretty great jazz album

Saxophone!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At the right setting and moment, this fits perfectly. A warm day on the terrace with a drink would be a nice setting

Album art:3

Very nice and ready listening jazz! I loved both the male and female vocals.

Favorites: The Girl From Ipanema, Doralice, Corcovado Brilliant stuff. Getz and Gilberto were an excellent pair working towards possibly the best bossa nova project to ever exist. One of those records that I feel you don't even have to like the genre to enjoy. It's just that good!

Classic bossanova

Beautiful

Lovely mellow album, wonderful performances all round, and helped prevent me losing my shit while trying to get Power Bi to work.

Beautiful. This was my first encounter with the amazing voice of Astrud Gilberto, and I have loved her forever.

Very nice, and easy listening for a Sunday morning. I enjoyed this a lot

I would expect to hear this music in a black and white movie about a French woman who is lonely. Smoooooooth saxophone pair with calming vocals. Great album

I mean, it's really good but could you identify any of the songs besides girl from Ipanema? That's one of my favorite songs but this is just a good vibe

Super calm vibes I adore this so much It is great music to chill out to A bit repetitive and a lot of it feels the same but it works in the albums favor.

Pleasant

Another Getz in the space of a few days! Everything I said about the other one applies to this one too: "Immaculate vibes, but maybe not as much dynamism. That's a small complaint though. This is a lovely listen for any downtime." I mean if you want bossa nova you have to start with this album I suppose! Must-listen #142.

Very good

So smooth

might bump it up. Bossa can get boring?...

Girl from Ipanema

Very nice background music. 7/10

Got an evening barbeque event? This is the album for you. Cool as a fresh mojito, but interesting enough to avoid the Muzak accusation. The whole album is great, tho' "Ipanema" suffers slightly from over-familiarity.

It’s just very pleasant.

Chill. Vibey. Pretty enjoyable.

So good, lovely to ease up the end of the day

Classique de la bossa nova, t'entend les premiers notes, direct t'est transporté, t'est apaisé

This reminded me of being at a 60s house party.

Silky smooth and sexy. Makes one thirst for a martini. Strengthens with every listen. Does have a certain samey-ness throughout

4/5 or 8/10 (I cant speak spanish)

sample in the wild! will listen again

I will for sure like this. Doralice is great. Joao Gliberto's voice is so warm and comforting. The sax is very warm and cool jazz too. I like all the pieces individually but when it's all together it sounds a little like the type of music that you might hear at a restaurant that has white table clothes. Some of the songs drone on for too long. I think thats why I like the first 3 Joao Gilberto records a little more than this.

Solid listen, and maybe the defining album of the style/genre. It's something that I think you have to be in the mood for, but when the mood strikes, you probably can't do better.

Benign as it gets, but that's exactly why it's so revered and enjoyable. This is exactly how I love my jazz: calming and charming as fuck. None of that phallus waving, virtuosic, instrument jerking stuff. Just pure mind wandering with great musicianship, as it's displayed here. Its approach can be enjoyed by those who dislike the instrument jerking that jazz can sometime be, but can also be approved by those into more intricate stuff due to its simple nature and how much it conveys with just a few simple licks. Best track(s): Girl From Ipanema ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Finally a very good Bossa Nova album. Still waiting on Jobim solo album…

sick bossa nova but in lower case. I have never felt so cool and calm while listening to music before.

The most bossa nova to ever bossa nova. It has all the BN Bangers! A little too low key at times but overall it was a fun listen. Great background music which is sometimes just what the doctor ordered

Coastal weekend vibes.

I like this artist combo and this style of laid back, bossa nova style music, but prefer Gilberto by himself. Also a big fan of Gilberto’s daughter Bebel — her self-titled album from 2003 is quite good. Bonus for having the track Corcovado, which is covered by Everything But the Girl on their Walking Wounded album I keep raving about.

Enjoyably mellow.

Great Sunday morning coffee album on a Summer day. Oddly the second Getz record I have gotten in a row but I'm not mad about it.

SAXon! It's going to be very hard for me to not just say "A Classic" every day in these reviews. As a child I dreamed of going to Ipanema because of this song and this year I got to go! Getz, Gilberto, GOTTEM! A Classic. - Liesl

++: The Girl from Ipanema, Doralice, Desafinado, Só Danço Samba, O Grande Amor +: Para Machucar Meu Coração, Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars), Vivo Sonhando 8,8/10

Fantastic album I never would have tracked down. The Girl From Ipamena is well known, but I had never heard the version with Portuguese lyrics and a male voice. The rest of the album was a fantastic showing of classic bossa nova / jazz music, things I never really explored beyond the somewhat related jazz / swing / ska of the 90s.

sommerlicher start in den tag - gemütlich mitwippen bei bekannten klassikern

Cooler Bossa Nova wie er sein muss. Bin selber erstaunt aber es gefällt mir!

Romantic, chill & chic summer listen.

Incredible vibes.

Soft and soothing, and that's something I need right now. Putting it on the replay list.

Lovely. Will revisit

Killer album to write to, vibes!

had no idea what to expect, enjoyed it a lot

Truly soothing - an ideal album to set the perfect tone for a serene and peaceful evening 💖

i like bossa nova

Lovely, chill bossa nova.

Enjoyable music. Recognised the first song but none of the others.

I think this is jazz. Pretty soothing I like it

Really cool album. I could imagine myself sitting at a cafe with this playing in the background.

Loved the slow jazzy instrumentals and the beautiful vocals

The woman from impanena is clearly really the only reason this album got flagged in the list imo. The rest of the album isn’t bad it’s some solid jazz background, but isn’t anything mindblowing. Give it a solid B

immaculate, sparkling vibes Portuguese is such a beautiful language his voice, her voice, their playing yes Best tunes: the girl from ipanema, doralice, para machucar meu coração, desafinado, só danço samba

Getz was a mess with drugs, alcohol and rage...the saxophone choose him. Astrud hanging out in the studio and asked to to sing the English part in "The Gal From I", and being paid $125 for a record that sold 5-million...not right. This gentle LP was recorded in 2-days, recording only what is necessary. This is a Sunday morning, pancake making background music. Understated and clean. Ching-ching-ching!

Sunday morning bliss

Solid chill-out music. This is an album that puts you in a headspace you can lavish in for days. While I do think a lot of the songs blend in with one another (upon first listen at least), I think that just speaks to how consistent this whole thing is - I respect that it remains in this very consistent, lowkey, and relatively standard cool-jazz and bossa-nova space for its duration. As the title suggests, the two artists here are vocalist Gilberto and tenor sax player Getz. Most tracks have Gilberto riding these standard samba percussive bits in the first half, with Getz coming in during the song's final minutes, sending it off with a solo. The solos can range from light and fluttery, to relatively dramatic like on 'O Grande Amor'. I also really enjoyed Astrud Gilberto's vocals on the opener 'The Girl From Ipanema' and 'Corcovado', she offers an oddly modern take on vocal jazz, considering this came out in '64 and all. This is music that can cheer you up, and make the gloomiest of days feel sunny. Great stuff.

i feel like i’ve heard this music in an elevator before. it’s so soothing and pleasant. just all around wonderful

Lovely vibe. Couldn’t distinguish one song after Ipanema. All sorta blends.

L'album de smooth bossa accessible suprême. Ça met un mood, ça en déroge pas, c'est parfaitement exécuté. Un des disques les plus confortables, toute catégories confondue. J'hésite entre 4 et 5.

I'm getting old. I really enjoyed the depth of inoffensiveness of this. I also enjoyed the back story of how this smooth thing was created with a lot of friction.

Good, easy listening.

Good vibe, old school feel great background music for a chill get together

The most soothing musical listening experience I’ve ever had.
