Vamos caralho

Weird how I got 2 Bossa nova albums in a row with even some overlap in the track list but I have similar feelings to this one as the last one. Very good but not quite 5 stars. 4 stars

four stars

Beautiful

Charming, pleasant, Homer Simpson in a submarine. Makes me wanna play the Sims 1

That was wonderful.

The combined efforts of this all-star team of Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Astrud Gilberto made a gorgeous, peaceful, sensual, playful, nostalgic, and most importantly, GOOD, like, very, very good, album.

Smooth jazzy Bossa nova (or samba?) focused around syncopated acoustic guitar picking, silky sax lines (Getz really makes that sax sing), and hushed but lovely Brazilian vocals. Of course there’s still other contributors - bass and gentle percussion, piano, etc - but they aren’t leading the songs or taking the solos. It’s a calm and soothing album, it’s subtle and delicate. It’s fit for laying on the beach, an early morning coffee on the veranda, or nodding out imagining you’re doing either.

I love it! makes me wish that the sun would shine and i could lay down in the sand after an cool down. Huge fan of Bossa Nova and Brazilian Music. Albums like these are much more needed on this list tbh. (4.0/5.0)

This was awesome. I did not realize how much of this album I have heard of through other forms of media. Pretty cool. I wonder if Devin Townsend took influence from this record for his casualties of cool record. Pretty good!

Sophisticated

soothing bossa nova, top notch stuff

loved girl from impanema, great gateway into bossa nova

First time listening to bossa nova, but a very fun and fluid genre. Girl from Ipanema is a classic that even I had already heard.

Very groovy

Beautiful guitar work and vocals. I can see why Joao Gilberto is seen as the legend of Bossa Nova. Very pleasant to listen to.

goes hard! and in a really intriguing way too! was not feeling it at all initially but spotify stacking girl from ipanema at the beginning and end really revealed to me how much i had settled into the relaxed energy they’re working with here. definitely one for a revisit with a magaraita to see if i actually like it this much but great first listen

Bossa classic. Canon. Love the playing.

8/10…nice Jazz Sounds

Pretty lovely groovy jazz!!

Great album, listened to this album a few times before, obviously girl from ipanema is a classic and Desafinado is another one I'm very familiar with, although perhaps not as good (in my opinion) as the Desafinado on Getz' Jazz Samba album 💃 Fav song: The Girl From Ipanema

Love's it

3.5 - enjoyable, but a bit too easy listening

A nice listen and something a bit different to my recent run on 1001.

reminds me of my home and my dad

Fun songs

This is not my usual listening at all, but it is so chilled and so perfectly evokes long afternoons by the pool and drinks with little paper umbrellas that my inner child demands I give it a 4!

Nice elevator music

Great, easy listening album. I think it played through twice before I really noticed

from what I've heard, I like Getz a little less than Gilberto (whose self-titled from 1973 is worth checking out). but Getz is never bad, and neither is this record.

I will rate it as 9/10 the Sax could get in the voice ways in at least two cuts(girl from Ipanema and some other one from side B), but other than that it was a great soothing listen.

The perfect type of sunny afternoon or rainy morning vibe album. As always, I am none too bright when it comes to jazz, but this was certainly something I would never object to hearing, especially when trying to chillax.

Paz was right, I did like this album. Crazy that 'The Girl from Ipanema' originates from here. Para Machucar Meu Coração is such a standout.

9/10 Impressive. Very nice… You can’t help but really embrace a record’s vibe when it’s so out in the open like this. It’s not hiding anything, what you get on track one is what you will get for the following 7 tracks, and if you can pull that off effectively, you have a pretty masterful record on your hands. The American Jazz and Brazilian Bossa Nova crossover here is pristinely performed, with João and Astrud Gilberto’s lush and soothing vocals complimenting the brilliant guitar playing, and Stan Getz’s excellent Saxophone almost providing a lead role alongside the vocals (as well as some really nice pianos by Antonio), there is a perfect blend of expertise that captured the hearts of listeners world wide. It’s unbelievably relaxing, not in a sedative sense but much more associated with a feeling of mellowness and comfort, most of the songs on here are enough to put you in a peaceful trance, transporting you into a zone where the sun is setting and it’s just right. Super Mario RPG Sonic the Hedgehog, Donkey Kong 3 Adventures of Lolo 1 and 2 King's Knight, Dig Dug, Chew Man Fu Harvest Moon League Puzzle Pokémon ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron Castlevania, Fatal Fury, Ninja JaJaMaru-kun ActRaiser, Blazing Lazers, Bases Loaded, Mega Turrican Cybernator, Rolling Thunder, Dynastic Hero Bubble Bobble, Double Dribble, Double Dragon, F-Zero F-Zero X, and... Donkey Kong Jr. Math! Ninja Gaiden 1... Ninja Gaiden 2, Ninja Gaiden 3... CRUISIN'USA aaaa aaaaaaa aaaaaaaaa AAAAAAAAA

Cigarette smoke and the taste of dry martinis. Quite a cool time traveling trip to the early 60s. Cool!

Jazz! Fun, relaxing, sometimes a little bit dragging. Gives me chill dinner vibes. I’ve heard The Girl From Ipanema before but didn’t know where it came from. I liked it.

Pleasant background music.

Beautiful, beautiful jazz/bossa nova album. The instrumentation and vocals work to create this gloomy ambiance. Lovely sax solo's layered in to incredible arrangements on every track.

the girl from ipanema is added to the playlist, but overall good classical i did enjoy

Troszkę lepsze niż 88. Girl From Ipanema 5, reszta 4

Super vibe, perfekt dinner party album

Sunday chilled vibes. Very good for a jazz record.

I have to say I've never really listened to a lot of jazz and this was actually pretty good, I mean jazz just isn't my favorite but I get the meaning behind it and I get why people love it! This was a very good album to get introduced to jazz!

Another enjoyable Stan Getz album

I bossa’d my damn nova ass off on this one. The well known first track speaks for itself, but the subtle, soft, restrained feel of all the other songs too simply makes me want more. Just like the crowd responding to the girl from Ipanema walking by, when I dropped the needle on this one, I simply said…Ahhh!

Quite possibly the vibiest vibe that’s ever vibed. I bet this album was playing in the Oval when Bill was up to his shenanigans. First track alone is worthy of a 4 rating. 3.75/5

Not something I would listen to on my own as I generally don't like listening to music that I don't understand, but certainly not something that I would complain about someone else putting on - cool and calm! Only (slightly) more objective complaint I would have is the same as others have already pointed out - the sax is way too loud compared to the rest of the mix, making it fairly off-putting for a casual listen.

kurvajo vibe

Quietly pleasant, soothing melodies. There was a captivating, dynamic vibrancy to it that I really liked. I'll be returning to it again and again I think.

great smooth bosa nova record The Girl from Ipanema is a standout

Big fan of this. 4.5 ideally

Pretty cool and groovy.

Nice. POV: I'm sipping a cocktail while sitting at a fancy bar with this in the background.

Smooooth jazz, great stuff

chilled cool classic

It’s a great vibe.

Silky smooth sound right here. Perfect for the background of a classy party.

Beautiful. Wistful morning music.

January 8th, 2025 HL: "Desafinado", "The Girl from Ipanema", "Corvocado", "Vivo Sonhando" Maybe it's time to admit I have a hoity-toity attitude towards some samba/bossa nova. It's: a) hold line music b) jazz for people who don't like jazz c) surface-level exotica for white Americans ...but I don't REALLY believe that. Yes, it didn't help to hear bossa nova for several hours trying to claim worker's comp over the phone last year, but that's no reason to dismiss an entire genre! I had an entirely different gripe with Jazz Samba, the last Stan Getz all the way back at #67, which was that it's not what I want to hear on the highway at night after working several hours (I gave it 3*). Now that I've played it a few times in the morning, I find it much more uplifting and stimulating. A 2nd playthrough before rating would have gone a long way in that case. Now about Getz/Gilberto: ironically, the more subdued, small room atmosphere would work just as well late at night as it did this afternoon. Despite some great guitar and sax work, it stays pretty quiet throughout the run time. I didn't really get the solo Astrud Gilberto album on this list, but her vocals are a definite highlight here. Her husband-at-the-time João has a very calming timbre to his voice as well. As far as my favourite bossa nova goes, this has stiff competition with The Sims 1 menu music

There’s not really anything I love on this album, but the whole thing just has good vibes.

cool Bossa Nova

Mellow, chill music. Makes me feel sophisticated. 4/5

I adore this kind of music, but since Ipanema girl's song is so repeated I started to get bored with it... The rest is awesome, beautiful and so so nice feeling... I imagine the sea

Chilled out goodness.

Museum quality jazz. Dry but lovely and chill and relaxing.

I never liked Girl from Ipanema until today, something just clicked hearing the rest of the album. Now I get it. Imagining myself floating through a "Visit Brazil!" poster from the 60s.

Oh, two jazz albums in a row. Getz/Gilberto > Duke Ellington. The bossa nova vibes win the day here. It's summer. I'm about to knock off work at lunch time and head off to a nearby island for the weekend. Nowhere near Ipanema but still a fine way to spend some time. I'm liking this. Quatro estrelas.

I like this one. It's a nice relaxing chill listen. Girl from Ipanema is a good song, but honestly I sort of like the rest of the album more. Its got a vibe.

Lovely french jazz

Beautiful, lyrical, restrained, not a superfluous note on the entire album.

My whole body relaxed listening to this

THE SMOOTHEST JAZZ THE VIBIEST TRACKS I WANT A NEGRONI

very chill highlights: the girl from ipanema, desafinado, vivo sónhando (feb 12 2026)

Nice, obviously girl from Ipanema, but the rest is also nice... Not mind-blowing, but nice...

Very smooth. I could see myself putting this on as background music. This mellowed out my commute a lot!

What if elevator music was good?

The girl from Inpanema

Good music

Have already listened, good album

Pleasant

Nice mellow music.

I'm surprising myself a little here by rating it a 4 star. It's definitely not a genre I think I will gravitate to very often BUT I think it is excellent for what it is and in the right mood/setting I think it would be perfection.

Groovy

Smooth jazz - I liked it

• 4/5 • Girl From Ipanema is magic; the rest of the tracks could be death metal and I’d still give it a 3 • The bossa nova is cool and jazzy; a bit repetitive, but at 34 minutes it doesn’t overstay the welcome

So good and relaxing and awesome I loved it.

A classic that reminds me lovingly of my Brazilian wife. We’ve listened to many of these songs together over the years.

Yeah it’s pretty good, I like the blend of bossa nova and jazz. It’s very lowkey

Really nice listen, the type of music you can play in pretty much any setting. The playing isn't what I'd call spectacular but it is pleasant to hear.

Calm, relaxing, smooth jazz sounds. This was a pleasant listen in the background while working. Sounds quite a bit like elevator music or phone hold music, but I won't hold that against the music.

Fout. Ik moet toch eerst even acclimatiseren.

It's elevator music + some saxophone but elevator music is fire and I'm tired of pretending it isn't. One of the better albums so far lol. "The Girl From Ipanema" and "Corcovado" are really good. Tracks: 1>5>>3>7>2>>8>4>6. All good (The last 2 tracks are not part of the original album and are from a reissue, ignore them)

A nice lilting breeze of classic bossa nova. Great sophisticated cosmopolitan 70s dinner party vibes

I was on the fence between a 3 and a 4 on this one. Nothing really catchy but some lovely songs and a great sound. On a Wednesday morning when I have the house to myself and it is a bit damp outside, this becomes a 4. Best song: The girl from Ipanema (Gives me slight "Marathon" by Tennis 'prequel' feelings)

sooo lovely

very nice and sexy

Rating:B

[wii shop channel update day sketch voice] turn that up, i love that groovin' — what kind of music is that? like a bossa nova beat?

爽 soul 爽

Easy listening. Was enjoyable to work to.

beautiful classic

This is some of the best jazz in the world.

Really enjoyed this 8/10

Getz with his lonesome saxophone, playing for introspective minds, and Gilberto with his tender voice, singing for those who cannot. Warm nights are behind me now, as the winds of autumn chill the air. But listening to the smooth bossa nova grooves and sweet sprinkling of acoustic guitar, I am transported back to a lazy summer of wasted days. Getz/Gilberto is for those wishing to by whisked away into memories of better times.

A top notch bossa nova album.

Overall: 7/10 This was my first bossanova album. It was pretty enjoyable! Very relaxing, love Getz on that saxophone always injecting some much needed flavour. I'll be listening to this one again. Fav Song: The Girl from Ipanema Least Fav Song: Só Danço Samba

Such a relaxing and beautiful album. The instrumental on this one is so good and proves that it belongs on the list.

this album invented the bossanova

Impeccable vibes. Few albums are this chill. Have been loving having a little read or a sleep to this. I do think that there's jazz that I find more interesting or exciting, but it feels like a significant development from cool jazz into slower pop music. Best Track: Corcovado Worst Track: Para Machuchar Menu Coracao

Stan Getz a thumbs up from me, maybe it is the Bossa Nova influence, but this is the most enjoyable of the Jazz albums generated so far. 3.5.

Laid back and delicious

pretty nice jazz

Lovely.

Please more of this!! Classic bossa nova right here so glad to have listened all the way through. Ipanema is gold of course and O grande amor is a gem too. Need to listen to this one day sippin a spritz in the sunshine

Thought I'd already done this one but it turns out the album art is almost exactly like the one with Charlie Byrd. Ah, another piece from Olga Abizu, makes sense. I think I prefer the Jazz Samba version of Desafinado. Astrud Gilberto here is a wonderful addition of course.

Great album. Especially for right mood.

Very nice! A nice way to start the day, it did get a little long in the middle of it, but still would go back to this again!

Makes me feel like I'm sitting in a smoky nightclub nursing an old fashioned. Very chill background music, I dig it.

I liked the vibe of this album. The sax and soft guitar were easy listening. Crazy they recorded this in two days and his wife had never sang before this recording.

This was relaxing and smooth, loved the jazzy sax and mellow vibe. Favorite songs were: 1. The Girl From Ipanema 5. Corcovado 8/10

So nice. Guitar, saxophone, vocals all off the charts.

i loved the experience of listening to this!

Sam Cooke makes ya move. More of this yes please

I've owned this album for years. I haven't listened to it in a while. It was nice to go back and remember why I liked it in the first place

A little bit back loaded as my favourite tracks were the second Lady from impanema, so danco samba and o grande amor. Genuinely pleasant though. Liked every track. Not much to say really

Short review on this one; Very pleasant background music, great stuff for cooking dinner too, taking an elevator and best of all not being fucking British (I think). Really liked it. 4/5.

4 comfy

Very chill album for just kicking back. Very old school.

Very jazzy. Slight lift-music vibes.

It took most of the album to appreciate this as more than just background sound, but this was solid

Love this, but lets be honest, The Girl from Ipanema does carry a bit. Fave Tracks: The Girl from Ipanema, Corcovado 4/5

Quite a beautiful album, good introduction to this genre of Jazz/music

Bossa Nova— Jazzy, calm, and sensual.

This felt like someone was tickling my gooch whilst whispering seductive things into my ear, I'm not going lie, I enjoyed it.

Loved it

This stuff is so mellow but so powerful haha. I can't not get whisked away to Brazil. Daydream bomb.

I listened whilst walking through Paris. It was wonderful :)

This album had some very famous songs that I'd heard about but never listened to. I really like a saxophone and clearly Stan Getz does too. I was never bored or unhappy with a song, the instrumental was perfect office background music and the singing was very nice. This isn't exactly my kind of music but I really enjoyed it. 8/10

Yes! Right up my ally.

Dont know enough about to jazz to really give a proper verdict! But from an uneducated ear, I enjoy, nice relaxing, puts you at ease!

even though im from Brazil i had never heard a lot of this. good album, deserves its international spread

A delightful tropical vacation of an album.

Really good jazz with a nice variety. I have heard the more famous songs on this album before but never the whole thing. It's not too jazzy if that makes sense. Sometimes jazz can be a little too improvisational for my tastes, this isn't like that.

Very Funky, loved it

this is one of those albums where I can't really see myself seeking it out again, but I enjoyed the time I spent with it. super chill, super vibey.

This was a pretty nice way to start the day. You can definitely imagine yourself in a swanky club.

Easy hotel lobby music but very good. Stand-out: Só Danço Samba

An excellent Jazz/Bossa Nova record and a fun listen. The music is soothing, relaxing, and excellent for listening while lying on or walking along the beach. The musicianship is top-notch.

When Astrud Gilberto's voice comes in, everything melts away around you and you find yourself sitting in a seaside cafe, watching the world pass by. I'm personally not a fan of Stan Getz's breathy style of playing, but it's easy look past it when you have Jobim and the Gilberto's shining over everything. A gateway to bossa nova for generations, and for this thirtysomething, just the same.

Nice jazz vibes with this one

Really relaxing music. Crisp vocals and well played instruments. A pleasure to listen to. The album is flying by and suddenly it's over.

Viva la bossa nova

Great music but don't listen to it if you're working out.

A relaxing album that resembles a Woody Allen mellow drama vibe.

Totally enjoyable. How many versions of "the girls from Ipanema" are there on this list?

It’s nice :) gonna save this one for when I cook dinner high as fuck

Jazz, bossa nova. Suavecito. Relajante. Un 4.

Nice short album with good vibes all the way through

What a vibe. Could listen to this all day. Simpsons: Yes

The girl from Ipanema - Jazz / Bossa Nova Mix, für das Alter wahnsinnig gut. 4/5

Awesome

so sweet

Like a silky smooth cup of coffee on a rainy day. Masterful musicianship all around

This album is like the "Girl From Ipanema". It's "tall and tan and young and lovely", yet with its lack of variations and refusal to leave its decidedly one-note groove so as to have a little musical adventure on the wayside, it also comes off as distant and even a little too detached at times. Seems to me that other strands of Brazilian and Brazilian-inspired music can be much more engaging and livelier than this famous LP (think Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimiento, Lô Borges, Caetano Veloso...). Listening to the record, I feel for the guy watching the titular girl from Ipanema "when she walks to the sea" and "looks straight ahead, not at me". Because this is the exact emotion I go through when I try to love this album: the music sorts of passes me by without ever doing anything that makes me feel I can interact with it somehow. I imagine some listeners enjoy that 'floating' affect... Maybe I'm not cool and aloof enough to let it naturally sink in, who knows? That said, I guess *Getz/Gilberto* is still a classic in its bossa-nova / cool lounge jazz subgenre, mostly thanks to its most famous cuts, Jobim's "Garota De Ipanema" of course, but also his other compositions "Desafinado" and "Corcovado". And if those sessions make for functional background music, they're still doing their job perfectly right. Play this when you're having a bourgeois dinner with friends. 3.5/5 for the purposes of this list gathering "essential albums" to listen to, here rounded up to 4. 8.5/10 for more general purposes (5/5 for musical competency + 3.5/5 for the artistry). Number of albums left to review: 127 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 377 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 224 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 283

you know i was expecting to hate this because the infamously overplayed girl from ipanema is on it but as it turns out it's difficult to hold strong negative feelings in my heart for bossa nova. trying to hate this album is like that thing where you try to say the word "bubbles" as angrily as possible - it just becomes silly. it kept me calm through some annoying lab work so it gets a bonus for that

Girl from ipanema is on here. Twice. Nothing less than three stars for that

Excellent album with Astrud Gilberto’s voice being so smooth and lovely.

Absolutely fantastic, beautiful, timeless whatever you want to call it. The melodies and vocals meld so well with the instrumentals. Girl from Ipanema is a classic too didnt know it was from this album. 4.2

Enjoyed but not english

Some relaxing Bossa Nova with excellent vibes. 3.6 stars

Very nice

Just so chill and so good. Want to light some candles, drink wine, and enjoy!

ooh that's gentle

Mellow and jazzy

What a pleasant surprise! Such a chill, relaxing album.

Pretty chill bossa nova background music! I enjoyed it.

Isn't 1001 albums great? An artist I wasn't aware of in a genre I (very) rarely listen to but this is good stuff. Of course, some of the tracks are familiar from other artists, but this really makes me want to escape the rat-race and open a small beach hut selling crisp beers, fruity cocktails and the freshest seafood you've ever tasted

I really enjoyed this, the instruments and vocals were perfectly matched. Grab a nice cool drink, like a cuba libra or mojito, a chair in the sun and listen to this. It doesn't get much better.

I thought this album was awesome, I really loved how calming it was.

This is wonderful focus/atmospheric music! I will be putting it on again when I have lots of work to do or when I want to romanticize my life. I surprisingly already knew The Girl from Ipanema. I think it’s a tiktok sound.

Really calming.

Even though listening to something like bossa nova is still music tourism for me, it feels a bit more familiar than, say, Saharan desert blues (Songhoy Blues) or Rai-style music (Khaled) largely due to this album (and probably more specifically the rendition of "Garota de Ipanema"). It's not my first choice of an album to listen to, and at times the songs kind of blend into each other, particularly notable with "Para Machucar Meu Coração" followed by "Desafinado", but that's seems inevitable given the minimalist sound and my inability to translate Portuguese. And the interplay between Stan Getz's sax and João Gilberto's guitar and voice is fantastic, not to mention the backing band members' skills. My favorites on this album are the two songs with some English, "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado", as well as " "Só Danço Samba"; the timelessness of Ipanema alone earns it four stars in my book.

for fans of the soundtrack to A Man and A Woman.... the second side that features Jobim is weaker to me. I love Getz sax tone--not that I know anything about that--just sounds distinctly breathy and laid back to me.

Love the quiet mood, plus duet with a woman

I mean, what’s not to like here? This is obviously wonderful. Again – no idea what the criteria for choosing these albums is. But a total delight.

an album that introduced the genre of bossa nova to the general masses. the titular track, "the girl from ipanema" has been known across generations. overall it's very relaxing bossa nova, stuff to turn on when you're taking a load off. the duo's voices complement each other, the mixture of english and portuguese blending well. it's tranquil, and if you're looking for the perfect album to soothe yourself to, give this one a gander.

I definitely have heard The Girl From Ipanema at some point and couldn’t put my finger on when/where. It and the rest of the album were perfect for relaxing to.

Good dinner party vibes

Yeah this was pretty damn cool. His voice is so silky.

long tall tan lovely

Great bossanova.

The Girl from Ipanema Corcovado O Grande Amor The soft and subtle lyrics make this album. It’s almost an eerie but comforting feeling. So relaxing to me

4/5 very calm so easy to get distracted good overall

pleasant and fun though the middle blends together a bit i think a second listening would fix that

Mellow & relaxing with a good flow. Hard to give this one a low rating. Mostly was aware of the Girl from Ipanema, but the rest of the album keeps those relaxing vibes flowing.

Well, this is delicious! In 1964 jazz musician Stan Getz teamed up with guitarist/vocalist Joāo Gilberto (father of the very lovely Bebel Gilberto) for this album of Bossa Nova classics. The legend goes that they needed someone who could sing a verse in English for their version of The Girl From Ipanema, so they drafted in Astrud Gilberto (then wife of Joāo) whose breathy vocals made this a worldwide hit. Apparently she only got $120 for it!

Nota: 7/10 Data: 14/06/2024

Nice smooth, easy listening. Vocals are nice but instrumental parts are more interesting to me.

I honestly think the vocals on some of the tracks took away from the great jazz music. The vocals aren't bad by any means, but some songs didn't need them.

Oooh. Smooth. Never fails to make me feel fancier than I actually am.

Som jazz ska låta.

I love this. Perfect for cooking or dinner party

Loved it.

Blame it on the bossa nova -- the dance of love. A friend of mine recommended this album to me years ago when I was first learning about jazz. To this day, it's still like a warm bath. Everyone knows the Girl from Ipanema as she goes walking. But the rest of the album is just lovely, soothing sounds, gorgeous playing, and an unhurried good time. Back in my dating days, this was a can't miss romantic album. :-) Just sink into it. You'll enjoy.

Lovely. Like Bossanova! One star off because listening to the whole album at one time is a little tedious.

lol so soothing that the album has started over and I didn’t even realize

Comfy listening with a classic in there I had heard many times before.

If one where to ask me to define "lounge" music as I see it, it is like jazz but not quite, contemporary without poppiness... Relaxiing but not background, joyful but not new-age. ... ... OR (!) I could just point to this album and say "yeah, lounge is like... just listen to this." Because this IS lounge at it's best and core. This is so nice and relaxing and fundamentally what we listen to music for in the first place. It doesn't matter if many don't understand the lyrics. You just listen and chill. This is very easy to listen to and really deserves to be on this list of must hear albums!

The ultimate bossa-nova album, a classic to drink by.

I’ve got a theory. Northerners make fast, loud, oftentimes angry music because they are cold and need something to jump around to and get their temperature up. Southerners make quiet, soft, laid back music because they are fucking hot and just want to lounge in the shade and sip a cold drink and chill. Northerners: metal, rock & roll, the more aggressive strains of hip hop, etc. Southerners: country, reggae, bossa nova, etc. It’s not a perfect theory, but I think I’m on to something, and this album is a solid piece of evidence. This music is as chilled out as music gets. It is easy to hold the thousands of Muzak versions of “The Girl From Ipanema” against this record, but if you can try to hear this with fresh ears then it is really cool and really subtle and beautiful.

Chill, romatic dinner/background music. Spanish/latin

Now I know what the bossonova is. Girl from Imponema was awesome, the rest was very good too. Perfect background dinner music

Gone through many a Bossa Nova phase and military juntas aside, Brazil in the early 60s would have been my bag. Stan is a master of the Sax and this is essential listening.

I will definitely give it another listen.

Smooth, chill-ass bossa nova. There's a simple description of it, but that's all it is, really. It's an album to put on and mellow the hell out to. I really hear why it won Album Of The Year in 1965. Like either of the Barbara Streissand albums that were nom'd had a chance to beat it anyway.

The album has some of the most chill vibes this side of Take Five or Serge Gainsborough.

It’s a very good 4. If we’re being really honest, I think this album kind of peaks by The Girl From Ipanema. The good news about hitting that peak so early is that it sustains it really well through the first 5 or 6 tracks of the album. I do think by the end, it finally sort of tapers off, but more from just an inevitable fatigue of the soundscape. What’s here is incredibly relaxing, very enjoyable, and super easy to listen to. It never really falls off a cliff, but it sets the tone so well and so early that every other song, by comparison, feels a bit lesser, but still pretty good. I think the only reason I’m stuck at a 4 is mainly just how rigid the album can feel; not in terms of the compositions themselves, but simply the instruments at hand. I understand the general vibe of bossa nova, and how going full big band on it would immediately betray everything, but this album sticks really deeply to its core instruments, and it keeps a relatively soft tone throughout. I’ve heard passionately done bossa nova with a little bit more bite to it, and I don’t think this album ever really has that kind of bite to it. Regardless though, it’s a great album, a very recommended listen, and a good time that deserves a 4 – maybe a 5 on a re-listen or two.

When I saw Stan Getz, I knew I recognised the name but wasn’t sure why. One track in, I realised I knew him from the Astrid Gilberto album which also features The Girl From Ipanema. This is such a nice, relaxing album. I’m really finding a love for bossa nova recently. I really should seek out more.

A lovely, breezy record of Brazilian music, as interpreted by an American. A very chill listen, no doubt, but also pretty straightforward in its approach. Only interesting or memorable within the realm of easy listening, but sometimes that's all you need.

Very good chill summer album

This was a surprisingly great poolside listen.

A relaxing album that resembles a Woody Allen mellow drama vibe.

Love love love. No clue what they’re singing, made me feel like on a holiday. And wow the saxophone!

Sunshine in album form. Love. Favourite track: It has to be The Girl from Ipanema :)

Very chill. See where Thiago Petit gets it from

Getz/Gilberto, by Stan Getz and João Gilberto, is very pleasant. Its nothing crazy listening half a century later, but one could imagine the aesthetic appeal in a temporally appropriate setting. Still, I find the piano, violin, and jazz elements to this album, as I feel unlike my experience with Sinatra, the vocals blend better. It also had the better The Girl from Ipanema. My favorite is Só Danço Samba. All in all, Getz/Gilberto is a great album. best Song: Só Danço Samba worst Song: Desafinado

Great but fairly short. I don’t really know where it fits in with the history of jazz but seems like it was important for the cross cultural collabor

"Getz/Gilberto" is an album by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazillian guitarist João Gilberto. It also features Brazilian pianist/composer Antônio Carlos Jobim who composed many of the songs. It is a jazz and bossa nova album and is considered as the album that popularized bossa nova music worldwide. The album was widely acclaimed and won the 1965 Grammy for album of the year, the first non-American album to win the album of the year. The album opens with Jobim's "The Girl from Ipanema." João and Astrud Gilberto on vocals. A whispering João at that. A soft acoustic guitar. Getz comes in with the sax towards the end. "Desafinado" is similar sounding. A more prevalent bossa nova beat. João has a nice tenor voice. " Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)" opens the second side. The piano gives this a more jazzy vibe with the underlying bossa nova beat. João and Astrud again on vocals. A melancholy saxophone opens "O Grande Amour." This is mostly instrumental and we get extended sax and piano solos. This is a gentle and soothing album. Delicate vocals by João. A nice fusion of sorts with the sax and piano giving it a jazzy vibe with percussion playing a bossa nova beat. I was going to say this is not a very adventurous album but I really liked the last two songs where we get extended sax and piano solos. An historic album and a very enjoyable listen.

Another case of very pleasant and good bossa nova without anything too life-changing that could bump it up to five stars (aside from the obvious song!!) We love you JOBIM!!!!!

As likeable as bossa nova can be, really. Can be very emotionally captivating when it wants, and there really is a heart to it.

you get ipanema'd not once, but twice!

This album is a the shining experience of being cool yet not boring, communicative yet complex and nuanced. As a huge Gilberto fan I have My criticism too. In my opinion, Getz isn't as needed here as he seemed to be at the time this was released. He is a very fine sax player, but the issue in the record is definitely the song and Joao's delivery. But I have to add that his solo on so danco samba is a masterpiece. It's a very very high 4

Nice jazz album.

Mellow. We'll put together. Could just keep on listening

Loved it! So soft and soothing--perfect for my Friday morning workout.

jazz legend. gets a wee repetitive after awhile but it's a good repetitive. like i'm perpetually at a dinner party.

Great sax! Enjoyed the grooves.

The opening track was my favorite and I like this way more than I thought I would it was like ice tea on a hot day.

A classic bossa nova record featuring many of the greats of the genre. The music sounds effortless and impossibly smooth. It's understated, saying only what it needs to, exactly as loudly as it needs to, and nothing more. This is music for when you and your partner get home late after a night out but are still wide awake.

Great record (I have an original Australian mono vinyl copy on MGM). I also have the edited version of The Girl From Ipanema on a 7” ep, and this was probably the version I heard on the radio in the early 60’s. There’s something deadpan about Astrud Gilberto’s voice that I’ve always really loved & she’s great on this album, although only on 2 tracks - the other is Corcovado. Both tracks inspired numerous cover versions. Corcovado was covered by everyone from Miles & Sinatra back in the day to Queen Latifah in the noughties. And Desifinado was just as popular a tune. Jobim had already become known in the west, especially from the film Black Orpheus (1958), for which he wrote the bulk of the music. But this album, on which he wrote 6 of the 8 trax & played piano, really made him hugely successful worldwide. Within a couple of years he recorded an album with Sinatra. This is an easy listen. That’s bossa-nova.

I really dig this record. I find a lot of soft jazz just wallpaper, but this really grabbed me. It is soft and gentle, but the samba rhythms, the beautiful whispery vocals (especially with Astrid Gilberto appears), the band's undeniably chemistry, and Getz's understated soloing really lift this into something special. Desafinado, Corcovado and Girl from Ipanema are, rightly, classics, and stand out tracks on a really fine record. Not an album to outstay its welcome, it comfortably sits into its gentle grooves, and is very welcome back on my turntable any time. Side note: Milton Banana, drummer on the album, has the best name ever. God bless you, Mr Banana, wherever you may be.

Transportative jazz Seaside open air cafe Relaxed yet cultured

I used to put this on as pleasant background music when I had guests. People would either ask “why are we listening to elevator music?”, or they would think I was trying to make-out with them. So be careful if you play this with people around.

Sexy, smooth jazz. ❤️❤️

Enjoyed this one, was very relaxing and easy to love. I had heard a few songs before this, but now I know the origins!

Lovely, peaceful, and romantic. Perfect for the quiet moments

4/5 Hard not to love the Bossa Nova!

And I knew a song. It must be bossa Nova for the masses. Pretty good I got to say.

Mmm... nice. You know, I didn't really know anything about this album before today. I had seen it when I looked up the complete list of albums for this project, but I didn't know anything about the actual album itself. As it turns out, this is actually a pretty influential album right here. The album sold over a million copies and popularized the bossa nova genre. After doing my preliminary research, I came to the conclusion that this album deserves to be on this list. That conclusion was further supported by the thoughts that were entering my head when I listened to this album, because it's really good. Is it a bit repetitive? Yes. Do I care? No. The vibes here are just immaculate. I love the singing, the sound and compositions are top-notch. This is just a great collection of some nice music to just sit back and relax to. High 4/5.

This was a fun one. Probably slightly below 4 stars.

Solid album. I like the bossanova sound, and this album has enough catchy songs to go above average.

It's raining and windy out, but this album still makes it feel light and Springy out.

There was a magical day in my early 20s, when I was lucky enough to live abroad, that I spent with 3 other women paddle boating on the Vltava, cooking delicious dishes it never would have occurred to me to try to make at that time (bruschetta with eggplant?!), and listening to music in the fabulous apartment the host owned. She was a little older, a little more worldly, she taught yoga as well as English as a 2nd language & she was *married*. She put on this album while we cooked and laughed and hung out & maybe even danced a little bit like we were in some corny movie - and for an afternoon, I felt less like a broke expat who had no idea what they were doing with their life, and more like a sophisticated young woman living a fabulous life.

This is the shit you play at fancy dinner parties you host. I’m talking cotton napkin fancy. It’s chill, I’d play again. 4 stars

Well this is just lovely. Transports me to a dark, smoky jazz club of that era. It’s so groovy and chill and silky smooth. Love the vibe, and totally dig the sax playing. It’s not something I’d jam out to with the car windows rolled down, but certainly would be a great Sunday morning type listen.

Lovely little album. Nice and cozy. Favorite tracks: All of them, but The Girl from Ipanema is definitely the favorite favorite

Beautiful…Getz is truly one of the goats. Lobe the latin influence from Gilberto on this album too.

A jazz album, really nice vibes actually. Chilled out and nice background music. A low 4!

Top of the line for its genre. Great piece of work.

Favorite Tracks: The Girl From Ipanema Corcovado

Beautiful and transportive.

Favourite tracks: girl from ipanema

This went down smooth.

Super awesome.

it was good funky sax sounded a bit like flute sometimes (they’re so similar though tbf) hate to say i did get a bit bored towards the end

This reminds me of my childhood. Also doesn't hurt that I'm relistening to it while having my little European moment--sipping a cappuccino at a cafe in the Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere on a crisp Tuesday morning. I really could get used to it.

Excellent Jazz music, loved it!

4.5/5. Great album, always enjoy listening to this.

It's a classic and it goes to my Lounge folder 4,5/5

This is listenable jazz.

I liked this quite a bit, it is some pretty chill music. I actually recognize a song or two from here, I think it was on an episode of Frasier.

Loved this album. Second album I've got from Stan Getz and it just continues to be a vibe. I don't think I enjoyed this one as much as his Samba record earlier. Nonetheless had a great listen to this. Will revisit.

Chill dinner vibes

CLASSIC

It's perfect for an evening with friends. Music, something to drink and long conversations.

One of the most calming albums ever. Simply put. Bossa-nova at its finest and most iconic
