Джаз,гитара,низкие вокалы,все это в одном альбоме,мелодично саундовый альбом на стыке джаза и лоуфай гитары 4.68/5 @spiderland3
I wasn’t in a good mood before putting on Getz/Gilberto, and now? I am still in a bad mood haha. But for those 39 minutes and 21 seconds, I felt completely at ease. Smooth, timeless, and effortlessly beautiful classic. 10/10.
For me way back when, an introduction to a whole continent of music.
phenomenal bossanova/jazz/lounge
One of the best albums.
i generally like jazz/bossa nova sounds despite not actively looking for them. This album was no exception, very smooth and relaxing, time flew by listening to this record
The whole package. The subtlety and restraint of the guitar and vocals. The sense of place this album communicates. A thousand years from now whatever AI has eaten our brains will keep this album around. Timeless.
Great album. No bad tracks. Variety. Clearly got something to say and one of the most covered tracks of all time. Really easy to listen; lots to appreciate. Certainly needs to be on this list
Блин вот очень хороший альбом! Вторая половина альбома понравилась больше!!! Очень красивый саксофон, мягкая гитара, лëгкие барабаны и шмкарный португальский вокал!
Fantastic from start to finish.
Consistently excellent, front to back. Easy to see how this is definitive in the genre. Hard to find anything out of place. Getz' saxophone parts are exquisite, and the soft vocals are such a vibe setter.
Bossa Nova classic and THE album I turn to when I'm in the mood for this kind of music. No flaws and no notes
Smooth, mellow, relaxed, effortless mastery.
A lovely listen
A classic for a reason, so beautiful and calming.
Excellent. I love bossa nova/ samba.
5 stars. Great music
Can't speak a word of Portuguese, but man, didn't need it. The soulful jazz gave me a big cuddle and teleported me to a warm evening dining out at a samba bar on the outskirts of Rio - time to pour a Caipirinhas and just chill. Understated brilliance!
Really enjoyed this. Varied, smooth, groovy. Some jazz standards mixed in with new music. A very rewarding listen.
Oh how lovely
I always love me some jazz samba and these guys and lady know how to do it right.
So sad that some people consider this elevator music. It’s fantastic.
chill bossa nova
Loved it
Awesome music, even though it was mostly in Portuguese. You can't get update by bossa nova. It's like a cozy warm blanket in a lounge lizard kinda way.
Nivea en el bullate
Elképesztő hangzás, gyertyafényes vacsora
Dude is so smooth. This was a real joy.
I really enjoyed this album
What can I say about Getz/Gilberto that hasn't already been said? It's a masterpiece. Stan Getz is my undisputed sax king, and João Gilberto is the bossa nova master. What could be bad? Listened to this absolute classic as it was meant to be played, on vinyl pressed in 1964.
‘Chef’s kiss’
Amazing as always; the platonic ideal of bossa nova. Most other bossa nova pales in comparison to this to me. Astrud Gilberto’s voice is just one of my favorites of all time. The songs don’t feel particularly distinct but the album is short enough that it gets away with it. Fav tracks: The Girl From Ipanema; Para Machuchar Meu Coracao; Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)
Perfect album for a late summer evening walk. In fact, perfect album full stop.
Immaculate. Soulful. Laid back, yet groovy. I closed my eyes for a sec and it felt like the seaside, sun rising in the horizon. Made me appreciate life a little more as it played. Is that not the mark of great music? What a wonderful pull. 🏝️
This album was absolutely fantastic. I have never listened to bossa nova and it is way outside my usual listening but I cant believe how enchanted I was. I listened to it three times. Magnificent.
Слушал в наушниках по дороге и очень кайфанул.
Absolute 5+++ stars!
relaxing
What an incredible album, gotta get this on vinyl! Not my usual choice of music but having this on while working or just hanging and reading with a cup of coffee sounds delightful. Honestly this is what I want every coffee shop to sound like when I walk in, I can see why this is regarded so highly!
THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA!!! i love bossa nova! what a delight.
I adore the smoothness of this album. Perfection!
man i dont know why i havent sought out more bossa nova on my own. it captures so many of the things i love about cool jazz, sometimes in an even more vibrant way. i have listened to this record quite a bit at least, and i always lose sight of the tracklist halfway through in the best way possible. slightly bittersweet, slightly numb, a comforting distance between me and an overwhelming outside world. a consistent slab of golden autumnal comfort...im so damn ready for summer to be over lmao. another contender for best album cover of all time...feels like a sequel to the Time Out cover (speaking of the cool jazz lineage), and honestly i think the palate enhances this record even more
Iconic. No words
I’ve always wanted to listen to this album, but never did for some reason. I knew it was on this list, so I was waiting for the day to come. Just awesome chill, smooth, laid back jazz. I can definitely see why this is a classic. It was a pleasant surprise to find out I had heard The Girl From Ipanema before.
i love bossa nova holy peak
There aren’t many albums that can boast producing as many standards as this one has: Girl From Ipanema, Doralice, Desafinado, Corcovado, So Danco Samba, just an incredible record, beautiful composition and brilliant musicianship. An all time great record.
This record is a valued part of my collection already, but I took this listen to take it in on its own as a project or work of art, and I'm gonna try my best not to be completely biased. Even with a critical ear, it was a fabulous listen. We are not listening to this work because we love Gilberto's voice. If you don't like Astrud's voice I might not trust you, but Joao's is just another instrument to aid the masterful team of musicians on this record, including himself. His use of guitar is nearly the definition of bossa nova, teamed with Jobim (another near definition of bossa) as a composer, and Getz's beautiful display on the sax, this album was made for relaxing moments in the sun. It feels like waking up slowly because you've got the time.
Used to have the cd but it got scratched up.
A beautiful album to play while your daughter’s on xmas break and it’s snowing and gray outside in park slope. Gentle asf saxophones and hats. EASY FIVE!
This is a beautiful and relaxing listen. A true bossa nova masterpiece. The only thing that's keeping it from having a perfect score for me is Joao's vocals. He can sing, but his voice is not much to my liking. If Astrud sang the whole thing, I think it would've been perfection! 4.5/5
Oh, this music is smooth. There's so much repressed energy and tension. It's beautiful and confident and deprecating. Full disclosure: I spent two years in Brazil so the Portuguese brought back amazing memories.
Excellent album, a staple of Bossa Nova, music that defined a generation.
Love love love this.
Impeccable. Illustrious combination of bossa nova and jazz. Would listen for hours

I’ve listened to it before. It’s great.
Getz/Gilberto isn’t just a classic album, it’s a mood in itself. From the very first notes, it creates a sense of calm, elegance, and warmth that feels almost timeless. It’s the sound of summer evenings, open windows, and slowing down, and it’s a place you want to stay. The collaboration between Stan Getz’s smooth saxophone and João Gilberto’s delicate guitar and understated vocals is pure magic, beautifully enhanced by Antônio Carlos Jobim’s compositions and Astrud Gilberto’s unforgettable voice on tracks like The Girl from Ipanema. This album is the perfect blend of jazz sophistication and bossa nova’s subtle rhythms. It’s simple, yet deeply refined, and that’s exactly what makes it so powerful. It’s a record you return to, not to analyze, but to feel. 5/5
Ah, finally the origin of Girl from Ipanema. Wonderful.
Did I know anything about Bossa Nova before hearing this? No, but I know a tiny bit now. Either way Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto make beautiful music on this album, especially the tracks with Astrud Gilberto. I wouldn't play it often as it is pretty laid back and liable to put you to sleep but this album will definitely be remembered.
I like this album. I've heard it once before. I understand it to be a "must have" in your collection of vinyl, but I'm still looking for a copy. While I'm not much a fan of jazz, this album's smooth bossa nova vibe is quite nice. It's the kind of album you'd put on to woo a gal the first time she's over at your house for a dinner date...if you're a character in a movie.
fantastic for work or lounging around
Gorgeous and smooth , makes me wish I was sipping a red wine in a quiet bar with this softly playing . Simply relaxing on the ears and a pleasure
a stark contrast to yesterday's 5/5 from CCR comes some absolutely delightful soft folk/jazz
9/10 Favorite: The Girl From Ipanema
Meticulously beautiful and great recording.
Delightful and timeless
Solid
exquisite little album
Fantastic. Getz and Gilberto compliment each other wonderfully. Getz's playing really livens up each song. This is bossa nova at its finest. This is what this list needs more of. 5/5 Will listen again
iconic
I regularly listen to this album. It's a go-to Sunday morning dink around the house background. Plus it's just so relaxing, no matter when/where. This was an easy rating...and washes out the bile I was feeling having spent any time wasted on Linkin Park.
I love this one. Hits just right on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee and some sunshine.
Sultry and smooth. Very enjoyable listen!
Bangs
One of the best albums of all time. Everything is tight; Gilberto’s at his best, Getz seems to have the perfect Bossa tone, Jobim is good as always and Astrid Gilberto delivers one of the most unique and heavenly vocal performances ever. Easy 5/5
Fantastic.
These songs are so great.
Such a classic. I love all of the 60’s bossa/jazz crossover records. Some of the most beautiful harmony ever written. Astrud has such a cool and unique voice. These records are all pure gold, this ones probably the most iconic.
Incredible.
Two absolute legends at the top of their game. Just an A+ jazz record.
Really nice
This could unseat Miles Davis as #1 on the IGTOV chart. 5 *'s
Really been hit after hit of albums I've never heard lately. This is one of the warmest, most relaxing albums I've had the pleasure of listening to - the vocals are buttery, the sax and guitar are mixed incredibly well, and the percussion blends in so well you completely forget it's there. Another 4.5 that I'm bumping up to a 5 heck yeah
Love it
Jazz, samba, bossa nova from the 60s. Incredibly smooth. Pool cocktail music. Cozy and classy. Smooth.
I had never listened to bossa nova before, and it was amazing. So soothing
Very cool. Especially in regards of practicing Portuguese
Perfect. It's a filthy hot summer day and this slid through my evening like a balm. Only ever heard it in in compilations before but as a single piece it's excellent.
If you're old enough to remember, this album changed music in many ways back in the '60s. And...there's no music more seductive than bossa nova.
I love this. It’s a perfect relaxing Sunday morning vibe. It’s so beautiful, her voice, the piano, the saxophone tone is otherworldly. It’s just gorgeous and I loved listening to it. I think I’ve actually heard this entire album before! I at least have listened to the girl from ipanema because I mean who hasn’t. But it’s silky and smooth. The perfect late night or early morning album.
Perfect for a summer Sunday
Love the ez listening,
Gooodd
## In-Depth Review: *Getz/Gilberto* by Stan Getz & João Gilberto *Getz/Gilberto* (1964) stands as a landmark album in both jazz and world music, credited with launching the global bossa nova craze and forever altering the landscape of popular music. This review examines the album’s lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, while also weighing its pros and cons. ## **Album Overview** - **Artists:** Stan Getz (tenor saxophone), João Gilberto (guitar, vocals), Antônio Carlos Jobim (piano, composer), Astrud Gilberto (vocals), Milton Banana (drums), Sebastião Neto (bass) - **Producer:** Creed Taylor - **Release Year:** 1964 - **Notable Tracks:** “The Girl from Ipanema,” “Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars),” “Desafinado,” “Só Danço Samba”[1][2][3] ## **Lyrics** The lyrics on *Getz/Gilberto* are understated, poetic, and rooted in the Brazilian tradition of painting vivid, romantic images of Rio de Janeiro and its people. Most tracks feature lyrics in Portuguese, with select verses in English, notably sung by Astrud Gilberto, whose gentle, untrained voice lends an air of intimacy and authenticity[2][1]. - **“The Girl from Ipanema”:** The most famous track, with lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes and English adaptation by Norman Gimbel, tells a simple yet evocative story of a beautiful woman walking by, capturing the bittersweet longing of the observer. The lyrics are direct, painting a scene of idyllic beauty and subtle melancholy. - **“Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)”:** This song offers a vision of tranquility and romantic contentment, with lyrics that evoke peaceful nights and quiet love. - **Other tracks:** Songs like “Desafinado” and “Só Danço Samba” play with themes of love, longing, and the joys and frustrations of romance, all delivered with a light touch and poetic brevity. The lyrics avoid overt political or social commentary, instead focusing on personal emotions and the beauty of everyday life, often through a lens of gentle nostalgia[4]. ## **Music** The music of *Getz/Gilberto* is the album’s most celebrated feature, blending the rhythmic sophistication of Brazilian samba with the harmonic complexity and improvisational flair of jazz[5][2][6]. - **Bossa Nova Rhythms:** The album is a masterclass in bossa nova, characterized by its syncopated, understated rhythms and gentle swing. João Gilberto’s guitar playing is central—his right-hand technique provides a subtle, percussive pulse that is both intricate and relaxed. - **Melodic Simplicity and Chromatic Harmony:** Antônio Carlos Jobim’s compositions are marked by simple, singable melodies set against rich, chromatic harmonies, creating a lush but accessible soundscape[4]. - **Stan Getz’s Saxophone:** Getz’s tenor saxophone is lyrical, breathy, and melodic, weaving effortlessly between the vocals and guitar. His improvisations are restrained, never overwhelming the delicate framework of the songs but adding a layer of emotional depth and jazz sophistication[5][6]. - **Vocals:** João Gilberto’s vocals are soft, almost whispered, embodying the bossa nova ethos of subtlety and cool detachment. Astrud Gilberto’s English vocals, particularly on “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Corcovado,” are unpolished yet captivating, her accent and phrasing becoming an iconic aspect of the album’s sound[2][1]. - **Instrumentation:** The arrangements are minimal, with piano, bass, and light percussion supporting the core trio. This sparseness allows each musical element to breathe, contributing to the album’s intimate atmosphere[6]. ## **Production** Produced by Creed Taylor, *Getz/Gilberto* was recorded in just two days, yet the results are remarkably polished and organic[2][6]. - **Recording Quality:** The production is intimate and transparent, with a natural warmth that highlights the interplay between musicians. The balance is superb—vocals, saxophone, guitar, and rhythm section each occupy their own space without crowding the mix[6]. - **Studio Ambience:** The recording captures the sense of a small room, with close-miked vocals and instruments that make the listener feel present at the session. Subtle details, like the resonance of the bass and the gentle brushwork on drums, are rendered with clarity[6]. - **Minimal Overdubs:** The album’s live-in-the-studio feel is a testament to the musicians’ chemistry and skill, with little need for post-production embellishments. ## **Themes** The album’s themes are rooted in romance, longing, and the everyday beauty of Brazilian life. - **Romantic Idealism:** Most songs explore the nuances of love—unrequited, contented, or wistful. The tone is never melodramatic; instead, it is cool, detached, and quietly passionate[5][4]. - **Idyllic Escapism:** The lyrics and music together evoke an idealized vision of Rio de Janeiro, its beaches, and its people, offering listeners a form of gentle escapism[4]. - **Cultural Fusion:** The collaboration itself is a thematic statement, blending North American jazz with Brazilian bossa nova, symbolizing cross-cultural understanding and artistic unity[2][6]. ## **Influence** *Getz/Gilberto* is arguably the most influential bossa nova album ever released, with impact far beyond its genre[2][3][1]. - **Global Popularization of Bossa Nova:** The album introduced bossa nova to a worldwide audience, sparking a wave of imitations and adaptations by artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys[2]. - **Jazz Standardization:** Songs like “The Girl from Ipanema,” “Desafinado,” and “Corcovado” became jazz standards, performed and recorded by countless musicians in the decades since[1]. - **Career Launches:** The album made international stars of Stan Getz, João Gilberto, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and especially Astrud Gilberto, whose debut vocal performance became iconic[2][7]. - **Cultural Impact:** The album’s success bridged cultural divides and demonstrated the commercial viability of non-English-language music in the US and Europe. It also provided a template for future cross-genre collaborations[2][6]. - **Awards:** *Getz/Gilberto* won the Grammy for Album of the Year, a rare achievement for a jazz record, and “The Girl from Ipanema” won Record of the Year[7]. ## **Pros and Cons** | Pros | Cons | |--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Timeless, universally appealing sound[5][1] | Some may find the album’s mood too uniform or subdued | | Lyrical, melodic saxophone playing by Getz[6][5] | Astrud Gilberto’s vocals, while iconic, can sound amateurish to some listeners[2] | | João Gilberto’s subtle, innovative guitar and vocals[1][6] | Lyrics lack depth for those seeking political or social commentary[4] | | Jobim’s masterful songwriting and harmonies[4][1] | The album’s brevity (8 tracks, ~35 minutes) may leave some wanting more | | Impeccable production—warm, intimate, natural[6][2] | The overshadowing fame of “The Girl from Ipanema” can detract from appreciation of others | | Seamless fusion of jazz and Brazilian music[5][2][6] | | | Launched the global bossa nova movement, huge cultural influence[2][3][1] | | ## **Track-by-Track Highlights** - **“The Girl from Ipanema”**: The album’s centerpiece, with Astrud Gilberto’s dreamy vocals and Getz’s lyrical saxophone. The song’s gentle sway and memorable melody made it a global hit[2][1]. - **“Doralice”**: A lively, rhythmically intricate tune showcasing Gilberto’s guitar and vocals. - **“Para Machuchar Meu Coração”**: A more melancholic piece, with plaintive singing and subtle instrumental interplay. - **“Desafinado”**: A classic bossa nova composition with playful lyrics about singing out of tune, featuring a memorable saxophone solo[1]. - **“Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)”**: Another highlight for Astrud Gilberto, whose English vocals convey tranquility and romantic longing[2]. - **“Só Danço Samba”**: Upbeat and danceable, with infectious rhythms and melodic hooks. - **“O Grande Amor”**: A lush, romantic ballad with intricate harmonies. - **“Vivo Sonhando”**: A gentle, optimistic closer, leaving the listener in a state of peaceful reverie. ## **Conclusion** *Getz/Gilberto* is more than just a collection of songs; it is a milestone in music history, representing the perfect marriage of Brazilian bossa nova and American jazz. Its influence is vast, its sound timeless, and its artistry unmatched. The album’s strengths—its subtlety, beauty, and cross-cultural appeal—far outweigh its minor shortcomings. For anyone interested in jazz, world music, or simply the art of the album, *Getz/Gilberto* remains “beyond essential”.
Bossa Nova is king. Stan Getz’s work here is just as fantastic and smooth as his name.
very nice, liked it a lot
Unironically good
Phenomenal Bossa Nova jazz. Really enjoyed the quiet, and the mood they achieved.
I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did.
perfection. love it.
Beautiful jazz by way of Brazil. Great in all the right ways.
This makes me feel good
Peak. Great vibes, smooth, suave, very nice.
BRAZIL MENTIONED!!! This is probably the most internationally known album from my country, and it is indeed a national treasure. But here's a warning to the gringos: there's much more to our music than you can imagine. We're not just made of bossa nova, soccer and hot womens hahahahaha
I would seek this album out again for its smooth and calming tones. Goid ol' Bossa Nova
Ah, se ela soubesse
Listen to this at the airport heading to Chicago So far this is amazing and the right amount of jazz I needed 9/10
The perfect album for a warm summernight with cool cocktails and good company.
This album made me fall in love with Bossa Nova. Marvelous and beautiful.
Music genres I didn't think I would like but turns out I love them: Bossa Nova
Magical
Great album that’s easy to listen to and feels cool
I mean, it's just the greatest bossa nova record ever, right? João Gilberto's chill guitar sound is to die for. Listened to this on a cold, rainy, Scandinavian summer morning. Just as God intended.
Peak bossa nova. Easy 5.
A flawless blend of relaxed jazz phrasing and the smooth sway of bossa nova. Rather than defining a genre, this album turns it into a feeling. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘐𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘢 became a global sensation, thanks in large part to Astrud Gilberto’s airy, untrained charm — despite her appearing on only two tracks, she instantly became the definitive female voice of bossa nova. João Gilberto’s subtle guitar and Stan Getz’s lyrical saxophone complete the mood: effortless, intimate, and timeless. A quiet revolution in sound.
INCREIBLE
No, no. Jamás. Solo lo imagino. Hasta el lunes.
Very smooth
very lovely work music
10/10 Bossa Nova, my love…
Very relaxing, I enjoy the instrumentations, the vocals are calming, and even though most of it isn't in English I feel like I know what's going on. It makes me want a cup of coffee in a cozy cafe.
beautiful piece of art
There are two albums my high school band director would always talk about, this one and Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, now I can see why. Definitely one of the better jazz albums I've ever listened to. This feels like a great album to relax to at night. Not to mention all the jazz classics and standards on this album like Corcovado or The Girl From Ipanema.
music for walking on the beach at 7 PM
Very much my kind of thing, will be on regular rotation
Beautiful classic. I remember this being covered on Channel 4 News when Gilberto died.. I think.
At the start of this project, 3+ years ago for me, I didn't care for bossa nova. This is obviously a masterpiece, but I think time has softened my disdain into enjoyment. I love Astrud Gilberto's voice and I love "The Girl from Ipanema" which this list introduced me to.
LOVED THIS ONE IT'S A SUMMER JAM
The OG! Put this on. Fix a cocktail. Prep dinner. Have a jazz cigarette. If you don't dig it youre just taking up space
I can still smell the cardboard sleeve of the vinyl record my folks had. One of my earliest memories of music here and phenomenal album start to finish.
A great album to wake up tom. I was happy to see this pop up in the morning. Love the Stan Getz sound. Although I prefer jazz samba over this I can't find anything wrong with this, hence the 5 star rating.
I feel this album in my body. I hate how Getz treated Astrud and screwed her out of royalties for her indelible contribution.
Heerlijk, wat is Portugees eigenlijk een mooie taal. Perfect voor zomeravond je, of studiesessie die wat romantiseren nodig heeft...
Beautiful bossa nova record. Sun softly glittering off the sea in Rio - bar d'urca, sipping a caipirinha on a hot summer evening, laughter in the background.
Classy and classic
Great tracks, perfect for simple listening, I was working on my laptop and toe tapping along. The classics on this album are really nice.
Extraordinary pleasant. Made me feel very grounded and happy. No notes. Five stars despite Ruth's "elevator music" allegations.
Love this album. If only for The Girl from Impanena. But the rest is great too. One of my favorite jazz albums
Very very good! A consistently chill album of samba/jazz.
Joyful summer dreamy weather, could listen to this all day with the sun above the garden.
Nice
10/10 Perfekt skrivemusikk. Får lyst å røyke sigg og drikke Grappa. Det e for lite softe blåseinstrument som smaske meg i øyregangane generelt i livet.
Classic. Is it elevatormusic or pure genius? It’s both, a jazz-pop masterpiece!
So much chill.
I always love the warm feeling jazz and bossa nova gives me. Although a good chunk of the album is in Portuguese I feel like I understand what is being said perfectly through the soft and intentional singing. I listened to The Girl From Ipanema and just knew that it had to be a hit; that I’ve heard it somewhere. The saxophone solos are beyond superb. I liked Kali Uchis’ version of Desafinado and it’s beautiful to hear it in its original language. Every element compliments the next perfectly. It feels like a rainy night: a perfect time to contemplate while watching droplets fall.
Album excelente
What an incredible album!
Chillout vibes
Smooth bossa nova, hard to hate this 4.5*
An undeniably cool album, especially with Stan Getz on sax and João Gilberto singing.
Incredible album. 10/10. I wanted to listen to this one again right after finishing it. Favorite songs: -O Grande Amor
Nog een klassieker, hoef 'm niet eens op te zetten om tot een vijfsterrenbeoordeling te komen.
great vibes!
one of the greatest albums of all time. probably top five albums to cook to of all time.
This album was absolutely fantastic. I have never listened to bossa nova and it is way outside my usual listening but I cant believe how enchanted I was. I listened to it three times. Magnificent.
Testing testing 123 - liesl Is this thing working?? How does it work - Tim
Stan Getz it.
Perfection. Gonna be hard to top!
Influential and iconic, but I’ve heard it before! Zero!
Look, this is a classic for a reason. It’s so good. So smooth. So pleasing and easy and lovely. I want to drown in this music.
Great music to relax to
I love love love João Gilberto. A perfect album imo
chill, summer, bossa-nova, water
girl from ipanema is beautiful. very chill and lovely to listen to. vinyl in collection. Would I listen again: YES Deserves to be on this list? It's THE bossa nova album. 5.0
Very good
I've already sought this out so many times (I tend to let things simmer before writing my reviews) - absolutely one of the best discoveries yet. It's easy, breezy, understated, and elegant. I can feel my blood pressure lowering within the first moments of The Girl From Ipanema. I adore this and would love to listen to it on vinyl when I get the chance.
Girl feom Ipanema. Musica din Brazilia.
Excellent, easy listening! Fun instrumentals and great vocal work. 'The Girl from Ipanema' is fantastic!
Perfeito
Already in my rotation, but enjoyed it as always
Felt like a Brazilian made love to my ears.
This is the magic of this list, something completely new to me & not saying “hey have you ever heard 1984 by Van Halen?” Sorry for calling 1984 out in particular, it’s just fresh in the mind. Going to download this whole thing for when I’m toddling around Split next month, ideal gallery & coffee music.
Can't tell if my rating either goes way down if I ever learn Portuguese but I'm keeping high hopes that these are banger lyrics. It's funny to think that the only song I knew here was girl from Ipanema and I think that may be the worst song on here, or at least the most straightforward. Need to delve into this more but it's short and sweet. Loved it. Highlight: Para Machuchar Meu Coracao
elite
Such a relaxing bit of jazz mastery.
I never really listened to much jazz until a friend of mine was purging his record collection and I got my hands on Getz/Gilberto. The album was a well-worn copy, but the record played well despite the crackles from scratches and once the needle hit the grooves I was hooked. The cool ambiance of Getz's sax, along with the Brazilian vibes from Gilberto was music so soothing and comforting, I now realized why this music was so timeless and classic. The secret weapon was Astrud Gilberto's vocals on, "The Girl From Ipanema" and "Corcovado" and it introduced me to her music and has led me to seeking out all her albums. I've continued to listen to (and buy) every Stan Getz album I can get my hands on and now can't get enough jazz/ bossa nova music and it's widened my eyes (and ears) to the world of jazz music. Definitely an essential record, not only jazz, but this should be heard by anyone that loves great music.
absolute banger
I've never listened to a full Bossa Nova album before but this was amazing as expected.
The soundtrack to a perfectly quaint day or micro adventure. Stunning sax on here. a wonderful display of restraint and release
Bossa nova, especially on this record, is a way of life, something that, like the Girl from Ipanema, passes but is entirely memorable, in fact longingly so. This doesn't pass into oblivion or homogeneity, but only strengthens by virtue of its fleetingness, a transience that somehow sticks around and perpetuates something permanent. That may just be the magic of a 'cool' that's not too cool. Getz/Gilberto successfully negotiate the potential dull and hazy atmosphere prompted by a smooth and superficial experience. It relinquishes smoothness for the sake of easygoingness, superficiality for a momentary suspension of depth. Thing is, it is deep - just not woefully so.
As classic as a record could get. Quintessential 60s bossa nova here.
This. Is. So. Good. I could put this on any time and just de-stress. Relax. I need more of this.
This album contains at least the best bossa nova song, and several other contenders. It's impossible to do anything else when listening to this record other than pay complete attention. Absolutely iconic. 5.0/5.0: Iconic
Perfect album for Saturday morning coffee
The best
It was such good background music as I worked that I kept having to go back to make sure I knew each song apart, it all flowed so seamlessly. I love BossaNova so this has to be a five star. It always puts me in such a great mood. Not sure if I like this one or Astrud Gilberto's more. Rating: 4.8
Alla fin fine la bossa nova è samba prog, grazie Getz
I am glad to be alive and able to listen to this gem, proud of my country.
Very fine, indeed. Personally I don't get tired of this even though I have been listening to this genre of music since childhood in the 1960's. Smooth and easy listening but not simple by any means.
Amazing elevator music
Floating on silence.
Music to chill/relax/make love to. Jazz of the easiest listening variety, lovingly sampled by modern beatmakers.
5 mellow
Every note on this album is perfection.
A stunning album that makes me proud to be Brazilian.
Simple perfection. I’d heard this one before through and it never disappoints.
Already heard but would willingly listen over and over. So refreshing and not as in your face like some jazz type music can be. Singing is great and gives a bit of a break from only instrumental parts/songs. Nothing bad about it at all. Favourite songs: the girl from Ipanema, para muchachar meu coracao, só dança samba, o grande amor Overall around 9/10
Such elegant music, this is class.
Sick little brazil jazz album. If. you want a dive on bossa nova, start here.
I wouldn't listen to this sort of thing very often but this album pretty much covers it for me. This getz a five.
already listened to some of it lol, i like it
I love this album, perfect for a sunny morning with a coffee.
A staple in my listening diet for decades and so happy to see that this recording made it to this list. It sounds just as wonderful whether played on a portable player of any format or a full blown hi-end stereo system. Sinatra’s rendition is just as exceptional and worthy of the original.
Mega gut, eye opening
10/10 I see no flaws with this beautiful 5 Wagyu Ribeye
Remember Pandora? I used to play this game with an ex-partner where we put on a samba station while we were cooking and kept track how often it would just re-play Girl from Ipanema, or Só Danço Samba, or any cover of those. Usually once every 5 or 6 songs.
Getz/Gilberto is a gorgeous blend of smooth jazz and bossa nova that feels timeless. It’s the kind of album that effortlessly transports you to a tranquil, sun-soaked evening. While it’s not without its flaws, the artistry and near-perfect mix make it a memorable experience that’s hard to forget. the mix is ridiculously near perfect. Every instrument, every vocal line, every delicate detail is balanced so well that it feels like you’re in the room with the musicians. The gentle interplay between Stan Getz’s tenor saxophone and João Gilberto’s guitar is simply magical, and it’s all captured with such clarity and warmth that you can hear the emotion in every note. Getz’s saxophone playing is smooth, lyrical, and deeply captivating, as if it sings its own language of beauty and longing. Tracks like The Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado showcase his rich, velvety tone and emotional depth. Every solo feels perfectly placed, highlighting his ability to convey profound feelings without words. João Gilberto’s guitar and vocals are captivating, with his soft, intimate singing adding warmth to the album and his rhythmic guitar providing a hypnotic foundation. Astrud Gilberto’s breathy vocals on The Girl from Ipanema enhance the allure of the track. The production is flawless, with a warm, timeless sound and seamless arrangements that flow effortlessly. The album exemplifies restraint, where nothing feels overdone, and every note is perfectly placed to serve the music’s beauty. It’s a masterclass in subtlety and elegance. The album cover perfectly captures the album’s serene and elegant vibe. The soft, muted colours and the intimate portrait of João Gilberto and Stan Getz mirror the smooth, calming nature of the music itself. It’s simple yet sophisticated, reflecting the bossa nova’s understated beauty and warmth, making it an ideal visual counterpart to the tranquil, sensual atmosphere of the album. while most of the tracks are undeniably beautiful, the album does lean heavily on its laid-back vibe, which can make it feel a bit one-dimensional after a while. There’s not a lot of variation in tempo or mood, so some tracks can blur together if you’re not fully immersed. Getz/Gilberto is a near-masterpiece, blending jazz and bossa nova with the talents of Stan Getz, João Gilberto, and Antônio Carlos Jobim. The mix is near-flawless, with music that’s simple yet elegant. While some tracks can feel mellow or fade into the background, the highlights more than make up for it. It’s a perfect album for relaxing and letting the music wash over you. A solid 4.8/5 it may not be perfect, but it’s undeniably special.
Imagine a world in which every review of this album wasn't "I need to listen to this on the beach"
Great leisure album. Has enough play between the instruments to keep my brain interested. Play this at the beach and fall asleep to a book you’re not actually reading.
so fucking good. just floored by the bossa nova
smooth n cool n sexyyyyy cercasi feminine looking boy con cui ascoltarlo mentre prepariamo la cenaaaaaaa con la finestra aperta d'estateeee
I love this album. Like many, this is what got me in to Brazilian jazz, bossanova nova. I still don’t listen to much, but it’s such pleasant, easy listening. There’s almost no other soundtrack I’d want when I’m sitting poolside with a cocktail. It sounds like vacation.
Getz shines, Gilberto charm. Jazz for the world.
There's something about bossa nova that makes you want to sit back and relax. Lounge about, make a cocktail for a friend (or lover) and do a silly little hip sway on your walk back over to hand them their drink. Gilberto Mendes knew what he was doing. One could call this the quintessential bossa nova album. I just might call it that. I might do a lot of things.
Legendary jazz record producer and label owner (CTI) Creed Taylor and saxophonist Stan Getz single-handedly ushered in the bossa nova wave in the United States with the hit record Jazz Samba in 1961, which included the wildly popular track ‘Desafinado’ (this record also includes ‘Saudade Vem Correndo’ which J Dilla sampled for the Pharcyde’s genre-shifting track ‘Runnin’). Getz and Taylor released three more bossa nova records to wild success, the final of which was this album, Getz/Gilberto. The Brazilian artists Taylor and Getz collaborated with during this four album run were pioneers of the distinctive bossa nova sound, and this record featured the cream of that crop: legendary guitarist João Gilberto and composer Antônio Carlis Jobim, both considered as two of the genre’s founding artists. An aspect of this genre that heavily contributed to it’s wide public popularity was its ‘easy listening’ nature — a now-satirical genre associated with corny jazz music used in waiting settings: elevators, lobbies, stores, hold music, etc. But at the time of this release, this sound was new and exciting. It merged both the samba rhythm and the definition-escaping saudade nature of Brazilian music and culture with the influential ‘west coast jazz’ movement in the US that introduced hypnotically slower, melodic and more intimate form of jazz that in turn was easier to listen to then the abrasive jazz trends that grew out of bop and big band in the 30s and 40s, and the esoteric free and fusion movements that were just taking root in the mid 60s. Getz was a pioneer of the west coast sound, having developed a tone known colloquially as ‘the sound’ — smooth, melodic, pleasant. This is not to diminish his chops as a soloist and composer. The record he released just before this string of bossa nova records, Focus, is his greatest album imo, it’s such a complex, exploratory dive into large arrangement jazz, and Getz plays much more vigorously amidst that elevated, conceptual sound. Getz/Gilberto is a classic record, there’s no debating its wild popular success and stylistic accomplishment — it is *the* defining record of bossa nova. But Getz is a problematic figure to say the least. He was a notorious womanizer, and developed a reputation of being pugnacious and extremely difficult to work with, two qualities that he brought to the making of this album. The vocalist Astrid Gilberto, then-wife of João Gilberto, was shot into stardom with a serendipitous decision made in the studio to have her record the English vocals despite having never recorded a single song in her life. Astrid’s vocal performance is one of the essential components that helped the song ‘Girl From Ipanema’ gain mainstream crossover success. The track’s accolades included shooting to number 5 on the Billboard charts, winning the Grammy for Best Record, and crucially helping the album win Best Album — a first for a jazz record, and something that wouldn’t happen for 43 years until 2007 when Herbie Hancock won for the exceptional Joni Mitchell tribute ‘River: The Joni Letters’. Despite the massive success of the song and album, Astrid’s naivety led to her not being credited as a performer, which meant that she wouldn’t earn any royalties from the song which is still, to this day, one of the most popular jazz songs of all time. Getz and Gilberto insisted that Astrid was merely a tool, that it was their genius that put that tool to work to create a masterpiece; her involvement, from their telling, was incidental, a byproduct of circumstance and therefore she should not receive credit. During interviews following the release, both Getz and Gilberto doubled-down on this perspective, and Getz specifically continued to insist behind the scenes that Astrid not receive any royalties. And she was not the first to experience this: Getz, like many leading jazzmen of the era, wanted all the credit (and money). And he wanted to have his cake and eat it too: following the recording of this record he had a brief affair with Astrid that led to her breakup with João Gilberto. Astrid went on to have a successful career, in no small part thanks to this iconic song. Her soft, casually sexy voice and delivery influenced generations of female vocalist including Sade and Tracy Thorn of Everything but the Girl. She worked with legendary jazzmen and arrangers throughout her career, but her impressive discography will be forever shadowed by the towering success of that fateful first song she recorded for this record. Her influence wasn’t limited to her music either. She too often in her career was unfortunate collateral damage in an industry that remains aggressively exploitative of women artists, but she became an advocate for women demanding respect in the industry, especially in dealings with major record labels. She died in 2023, but her spirit lives on through this song for the rest of time.
A beautiful collection of music that makes me eager to continue exploring music from this part of the world. The instrumentation is masterful and captivating, and each composition is its own journey while contributing to a consistent feeling for the whole album. Truly a treat.
The best boss nova album ever.
Feels like laying down under a tree's shade on a breezy summer evening. The drums, the saxophone🤌This just puts you in a trance. One of my all time favourites.
Yooo, who is shipping Getz and Gilberto? O.o Stupid jokes aside, this is yet another delicious bossa nova album. Kudos <3
Fav: The Girl From Ipanema Least Fav: Doralice Such a relaxing and cozy album, it Getz a 5/5 from me
92/100. Wow, this was an incredible listen. The jazz is so soft and smooth—it feels like a late Friday evening, sitting at home or in a bar, soaking in the weekend ahead. Fantastic experience.
fuckin beautiful brazillian jazz yes yes
incredible jazz album. The girl from ipanema might be one of the goat jazz songs.
Some beautiful music. It opened me up to a new genre to explore. Really liked this one start to finish.
One of the most important albums released in the last century and should be a part of every jazz and international music lover;s collection.
As a musician, I enjoy playing Bossa. However, I don't feel like listening to it very often. Hearing this album back-to-back, after listening casually to most of the songs for years, has probably changed that!
Great to hear this one again, excellent pace and use of space
Nice calm songs but also sad lyrics Corcovado made me cry
Имбаа. Мне очень понравилось.
This is exquisite. Aside from the fact this is fantastic, it dropped on the morning of the first real snow of the season and driving to work listening to what for me has vibes of warmer climes after clearing my driveway was more than welcome. I’ve now had Girl From Ipanema in my head all day and have no regrets about it. Long a fan of jazz, although nearly as knowledgeable as I would like, I now know that I enjoy bossa nova, especially as this is the second or third album I’ve gotten. A dose of Stan Getz definitely doesn’t hurt.
Absolute Masterpiece. Mellow Bossa Nova with gentle rythmically agile warm vocals.
I am so glad I finally got a jazz album, I’ve been waiting for one!! This album was so pleasant to listen to early in the morning doing some stretching. Their voices were so silky and the saxophone was so smooth. I loved it. I can see myself cooking dinner and drinking wine to this.
Очень здорово. Было интересно познакомиться с босса-новой. Оказывается очень милая музыка. Лучшая песня: The Girl From Ipanema
Nice, easy listening.
i don’t typically listen to jazz (ever), but i thoroughly enjoyed this. something about the sound of this album makes me feel like i’m in the room, listening to them perform. it feels like caramel to my ears if that makes sense. or like how a city looks on a rainy day. i didn’t think i’d love it as much as i do, but there wasn’t a second i didn’t enjoy. 5/5
The G in G.O.A.T. is for Getz/Gilberto
Wow did I love this
I'd like to take a moment to defend my STEREO hot take from yesterday. Yes, listening in headphones is going to make L/R pan more aggressive than proper speakers but John Phillips still fucked up the mix. George Martin and The Beatles were not making these mistakes and I stand behind Mamas and Papas being "mid". Ahem, traveling south... I wonder if Tom Brady listens to this on the dock of his Miami house--staring out at the ocean and wondering why he would ever leave the smooth, comforting embrace of BRAZIL. I'm familiar with a few of the now "standards" but hadn't listened to the full album. Obviously stripped down jazz/bossa nova but great playing and very enjoyable to listen to--it's a lot of saxophone but really melodic and the guitar and (sparse) piano give the rhythmic counterpoints. Maybe stupid but Portuguese is very pleasing to American ears. Alex drum corner: A real lesson that all of these songs have percussive life but 95% of what you hear it is dynamic hi-hat/ride cymbal with some woodblock/brush snare. I can't even tell if there's a bass drum or it's just supperrrrrr soft.
Relatively new to Bossa Nova but have been listening to it quite a bit. Maybe the most calming music I’ve come across. While cruising for more Bossa Nova the names Getz, Gilberto and Jobim come up a lot. These guys are the OG’s of the genre and you can see why. Perfectly crafted arrangements and performances. I can’t get enough. What’s most intriguing to me are the progressions. Totally fresh to me, and pretty far outside my understanding of music theory. Obviously the iconic rhythm stands out as well, but the progressions are what really interest me.
I love this. Sophisticated, sensual, playful. I’m definitely going to make sure this is on the playlist next time I throw an orgy.
We’re talking all time greats in Jazz/Samba - Jobim, Gilberto, Getz This album experience was great. I think ive heard all of these individually, but never sequenced. Its really a vibe and not overly done (34 mins)
You have to wonder how often Stan Getz got laid while playing his own record.
Ace. Thanks for the reccomendation
this album rules
It loves you in a way you never thought you could be loved. Straight piercing love.
That first sip of an ice cold cocktail while the heat of summer slowly fades away into evening.
This is impeccable. One of the most perfect and beautiful records ever.
One of my favorite jazz albums of all time. Perfect to throw on at basically any time.
Brilliant through and through.
Great Jazz!
Great jazzy feel
The Girl From Ipanema is an all-time great song, and its presence alone would push this toward five stars. And then Corcovado, too?!
Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto WOW! Somehow, coming from a very chill album, this might be my new favorite type of music, dude bossa nova goes hard af. From the iconic first track, to the other ones that sound like classics, I might actually come back and listen to this album, because it sounds different and I actually enjoyed listening to it. This is some feel good type of music, every time you feel depressed, you listen to one of these, and it instantly restores your faith in life, this is happy music, like the true definition of it. Calm and relaxed, buy joyful, colorful and full of symphonies and beautiful melodies that make my ears go numb, this is amazing. 1.- The Girl From Ipanema = 10/10 2.- Doralice = 8/10 3.- Para Machuchar Meu Coracao = 10/10 4.- Desafinado = 9/10 5.- Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars) = 10/10 6.- Só Danco Samba = 9/10 7.- O Grande Amor = 10/10 8.- Vivo Sonhando = 9/10 FINAL SCORE: 9.4
Perfection
This is a BANGER
A wonderfully relaxing album. Super easy listen, with very satisfying vocals. And killer saxophone work. A joy to sit back and listen to
very ncie
Lovely. The first track being very well known. But very smooth.
4.5/5
13/11/24 This was solid elevator music and very chilled.
Groots!
Soooo calming and relaxing. I really enjoyed the experience. Perfect music to lounge about with
Smooth, sexy, beautiful. I want to crawl inside this album and sleep for 10 centuries
# Playlist track - Desafinado # Notes - Incredibly smooth and compelling. Makes you want to drop everything and head for the beach for a nice beer. - Masterful instrumentals and beautiful poetry on the lyrics. - For the non-Portuguese speaking friends out there: I do recommend taking a few moments to read the lyrics out. They are great. - One of my favorite albums so far, in the 300+ I've reviewed already.
gently swinging, warm sounds of summer
Wow, this was incredible. Definitely had heard some of these tracks before. But this was exactly what I needed to hear on the day after the 2024 presidential election. Nice chill and calming music.
Listened to while reading Visit from the Goon Squad
Sublime
So nice.
own
Amazing jazz album, very soothing and relaxing. Perfect for a rainy day.
巴萨诺瓦(Bossa Nova)/拉丁爵士乐,咖啡厅会放的慵懒音乐ww
I bought this album back in college in the 90s. I absolutely love this album. These two are fantastic together.
5 estrelas
A remarkable partnership that cemented a genre in North America and featured 2 or 3 of the greatest songs injure modern pop oeuvre.
there's a whole album of this?????
Первый альбом збс, спокойный джазик 7/10, чувствую себя интеллектуалом
So good, so smooth.
4.5
This is the music you slow dance in the living room to with the love of your life after a candlelit home cooked anniversary dinner. This is the music playing in your headphones when you’re sitting on a bench in the park & the sun catches that jogger just right so you have to draw it. This is the music playing in the elevator when you’re on your way to that big interview for the job of dreams and it somehow calms the nerves right before you step off the elevator. Beautiful music, 10/5 stars!
Listened to this all day. Absolutely beautiful.
Best Song: Girl from Ipanema Worst Song: Doralice
Just a great listen all around.
D'ya like jazz? Only knew girl from Ipanema from this but my god it was glorious. Silky smooth - interesting reading into the history of bosa nova. Glorious saxophone and vocals.
I've been on a brazillian, cuban, spanish, and other hispanic genres kick for the better part of a decade now. It never ceases to warm the entirety of my soul upon every listen. Stan Getz was of the first I discovered based on his mainstream success in America in the 1960's. His influential sound and contributions to bossa nova have infinitly affected the jazz genre since time. So far into the future that a young man in 2014 would reconnect with the sounds of this album like an ameteur explorer would find himself on a journey in search of anchient riches. This album is a masterpiece, it is timeless, and it is influential beyond words.
Such a delightful, easy going album. Most peaceful listen so far on this list. Absolutely love classic Brazilian music. 10/10.
I've heard this album a billion and one times. This is one of THE top jazz albums, and DEFINITELY one of the top bossa nova albums. Great all the way, front to back. Corcovado is one of the greatest songs ever written. For me, it has this sound that is like... walking alone along a busy, snowy, city street around Christmas time. It's not exactly lonely but more solitary. Something nice looms ahead, but for now you think about times past. Now if only I could remember all these Portuguese song names...
Very chill and relaxing. I've always liked Stan Getz, a tenor sax player heavily influenced by a favorite, Lester Young. Astrid Gilberto's vocals couldn't be more charming. Joao's vocals and guitar playing are very effective as well. I feel like I should be drinking a cocktail while listening to this. A classic.
love this stuff
Never heard of bossa nova before, but wow it's so comfortable to listen to. The sax work is sexy as hell.
So unbelievably fire! This is jazz. Playful, teasing, fun, sexy all at once. Beautiful.
The coolest of the cool for 60 years running. Pop-infused jazz? Jazz-infused MPB? Or just perfection for any occasion? Astrud Gilberto is my favorite vocalist of all time.
Algjör dásemd og demantur í tónlistarsögunni.
Yes! I love this album. 5
Great album
They meshed well together and the guitar was very good sadly I don’t know how to say that in Portuguese
