Reviews (page 10 of 10)

sounds like the clash was forced to make music for a game show found it annoying idk it made me dance around a bit without noticing so there’s that

Ska's not really my thing. I think this is the OG British ska band, but man did I have to force myself to listen to it.

i dont know if its technically bad but its not for me

Just can't get into ska

Bleh. 3/10

I think I'm just not a big fan of ska, because this isn't doing very much for me.

There are some good tunes, but its all a bit basic and requires some genre investment that I dont have.

In my opinion, Madness took the ska sound too much better places. Not that this album is bad, but other than Rudy the tracks are not that special (ha!) to contemporary ears.

Only few songs

Fine, but I didn’t love the music.

The unique, quirky ska energy manages to keep things fresh for about 3-4 songs before the bit gets stale. Little variation in rythms, instrumentation, or arrangements means everything starts to blend together into 40 or so minutes of British whining and vaguely reggae-ish beats.

The thing with ska is that it tries to have all the energy of punk but with none of the self-reflection. What's left is sugar-coated but meaningless and empty. The Specials exemplify this emptiness perfectly. Even the covers of once meaningful Jamaican songs are so dumbed down that they become meaningless, whitewashed noise. A lot of that comes down to Elvis Costello being an absolute hack. By all reports, The Specials were aggressive and angry on stage... until Hack Costello got his hands on them and produced an utterly milquetoast album. Overall, it was a painfully lame listening experience and one that I don't wish to repeat any time soon.

1979. A Message to You Rudy, Gangsters

2,5; kinda weird sounds for me, I feel like something doesnt fit here, but the music wasn't bad and had unique vibe

Reggae/Ska. Not awful, but not really my thing either. 2/5.

sounds almost twee nowadays.

Well, of course, mixing reggae with other genres is already popular at more than forty years ago. I don't know about other countries (but I remember Magic's reggae fusion banger in 2014, "Rude"), but reggae plus x music is still a fairly big thing today here in my country especially among young people. Unsurprisingly, reggae hip-hop is the most popular. Those songs are pretty decent, but the older local reggae folk songs (yes, folk, my least favorite genre) are my favorites. And this? This... sucks. Why would they combine the feel-good energy of reggae and the angsty power of punk? This album is such a mess. Which is a shame as I'm interested in the riffs and beats of some of the songs. Is this what ska is all about? I'm not sure. But it makes sense, I guess. Punk is a big genre during the '70s, so it's no surprise this album got so popular, especially among the British youth.

A message to you Rudy vraiment sympa Tout le reste c'est du Specials, sympa 3 mn :)

Best Song: A Message to You Rudy. Just a classic. Worst Song: Too Much Too Young. Overall: A weird album for me. The whole thing feels too sleepy and laid back. There's nothing unpleasant about it, nor is there anything exciting.

Haven't heard of The Specials before. I get the concept. It's British Ska, but what they're singing about seems so dated now that I can't make a good connection. I'm not a teenager hungering for freedom in 70's Britain. So, not for me.

Some bangers

Kevyttä skatako tää oli? En muista, mut ei se ainakaan vituttanu

This album got a little annoying after a few songs. Some sort of catchy melodies and beats but it got old pretty quick. 4/10

Ska Ska Ska. I wonder if this is THE Ska album. Like, okay, I guess? Also Rudeboy.

better idea than execution

Man have been having a rough time of it the last few albums

Thats not for me, I feel ill.

Struggled to finish this, not for me

A strong ska album that melds ska and rock in a rather interesting way. Nothing too groundbreaking otherwise, though.

Ska in 1979. Surprising, I thought it was a 90s thing. Kudos for that. I could leave the album though.

Fun album, I'd listen again. Track list is inconsistent in quality.

Some good songs but not much variety within the album

Can't do ska

Sounded like a garage band. Not great.

once again i just simply do not know

Ska is meh. Never enjoy it much. Quality of the album seems OK though

Nja. Inte så kul. Första låten är rätt bra.

ska meininki ei ole mun juttu..

I have tried to get into ska in the past to no avail, and this album is not changing my mind. I find it kind of exhausting. I did find myself a little bit charmed by a couple of the songs, but those moments were rare.

It's Ska. It's upbeat and happy, but not in a good way. Not my favorite, but I can see why people listen to it.

Nope...must have been quite a thing around that time...just not my style.

Not a Ska fan but it did lead to good conversation about what the Mighty Mighty Bosstones are up to now.

Very mediocre reggae.

UNA PORONGA

I see a band wearing suits and it's immediately a couple of stars knocked off whatever they make. Now...I believe The Specials are one of those brass punk reggae bands, which immediately makes me think of Madness - otherwise known as the Worst Band To Ever Exist. But we will give this a chance. That's what it's all aboot. Of course, it is as horrible as I had feared, all ill-fitting trousers and white socks. Too much brass, plonky guitars, hats, and garbage. Everything I loathe in music .

I hated this album and had so many notes about it and it didn’t sacs them. :(

Message to Rudy is good, the rest sounds weak in comparison or too same-y 1/14 liked

I thought this one started out alright, but I soured on it pretty quickly. If feels like there's really only one thing going on, and it goes on for far too long. And unfortunately, it is hard for me to separate ska from the people I've known who are into ska. Favorite track: "A Message to You Rudy"

I can't stand ska. I mean, I love The Police, mostly because they at some point moved away from that annoying kiddy sound. I can't stand what they influenced in Argentina, for example. At least I have some emotional connection with Los Pericos or Los fabulosos Cadillacs, but let's be honest, it is like you gathered a group of infants and gave them instruments to make noise. OMG I suffered throughout this record. There were fine moments of course, but overall it left me stressed and annoyed.

Ska revival you say? Next time you see ska lying face down in the ditch DO NOT RESUSCITATE

didnt care for this at all

I was thinking this sounded like Reggae Elvis Costello, and after finding out that he produced this album I feel vindicated in my earlier judgement. I am not an Elvis Costello fan at all, and this album isn't doing it for me.

Trash honestly hated it.

Sets the bar for how bad an album in this book can be. I didn't enjoy any of it, at all.

Nothing will make me enjoy Ska, I'm sorry

Sometimes a song would start, and id get a little excited. Like little bitch is really good for all of 10 seconds, then the ska happens.

https://cdn.vlipsy.com/clips/uhqmV8Ik/480p-watermark.mp4 it's hard for me to listen to ska without perceiving it as some sort of satirical joke. for me the sound of ska bands are the equivalent of a townie bar's open mic night featuring a jam band with the biggest local losers who were a little bit _too_ into marching band in high school and are now there to "have a good time". even the album cover exemplifies my feelings to typecast ska, because regardless of the band being suited up and having the benefit of a black and white cover to add some edge, knowing that this is a ska album makes them appear as a bunch of dorks who are just cosplaying to me. the music is annoyingly happy-go-lucky and upbeat - i'd rather have a lobotomy than listen to ska. ska is frequently referenced in portlandia and has it's influence on 100 gecs, but I find it extremely hard to engage with the genre as a whole regardless of it being this defined subculture, because I struggle to tolerate the music after just a couple seconds. But I can see why it's referenced in Portlandia and why Fred Armisen is attached to the genre based on the genre's relationship to punk. Do the Dog had those punk elements which were fun and engaging, and that was a reoccurring motif I tried to look to for some faint glimmer of hope throughout the album. I guess the punk influence is the calling card of 2 tone ska. I did like glass breaking sounds in concrete jungle too, which also has a punk edge to it, and the song featured some fun guitar after that. But the actual ska musical elements ruin both of those songs as a whole. Listening to this album was a teeth-grinding irritating chore. I would rather do manual labor than sit at my work from home job and listen to this again.

"Just because you're a black boy Just because you're a white It doesn't mean you've got to hate him It doesn't mean you've got to fight" What a beautiful sentiment. 1/5 stars

I tried. Made it through one song and the first 10 seconds of a few more. I am sure this is a great example of ska, but... its ska.

Now what in the mickey mouse clubhouse is this. I don't know if I've ever listened to ska before. This is an interesting introduction. I mean it's not bad I'm just not that into it. It's very British. And their voices are oddly quiet. I mean it's nice just not my particular cup of tea. It's quite beachy to be honest. I can definitely hear the Jamaican influence. Yes not for me unfortunately but kudos to those who enjoy this I hope this album was good for you Favourite: Least favourite: Too Hot

Is this that ska thing everyone hates? I can see why.

really not for me

Oh what a shocker, more Brit Shit. 1.0

Some of the tracks sound too dated to be from 1979. I don't like punk, and the addition of ska and reggae elements doesn't help.

Well that name ain't good at all cuz there's nothing special about this album or band. I wasn't a fan of the British before, but this list is making me loathe them with a passion. Not EVERY SINGLE thing a brit put out should be listened to before dying. This list is just the author's fave playlist at this point

Could be fun background music (depending on the setting) but nothing that really “stands out” as a whole, unfortunately.

There were only 2 songs I genuinely liked (It’s Up to You & Little Bitch) and even then they weren’t all that great. This genre just isn’t my thing, 1/5

1/5 didn’t finish the album 2/5 didn’t keep the album 3/5 kept it and will listen when songs randomly show up on shuffle 4/5 kept it and will listen to it again front to back on my phone 5/5 buying the vinyl

якийсь альбом all over the place немає певної синергії яку очікуєш від альбомів зазвичай.

Sometimes im almost happy when an album pisses me off like this. Im so glad I still have feelings <3

Naporno za slušati i baš mi apsolutno ništa ne radi, baš bezveze album i pokušaj nekog ska panka ili nezz ni kako ovo nazvati. 1/5, 2/10

Nah.1.5

I don’t like it. 1

it was ight. mess with ska but like i’m good fr

A lot of ska is fun, but this was just boring. Not a fan.

I didn’t care for the tempo of the first song but I like the second one, the third song has a bit reggae in the tempo

The least angry of any "angry" album I've listened to. This is what happens when you aren't tough enough to be The Clash, and not talented enough to be The Police.

I believed that I would hate this. I was right.

Brittiläistä reggae musiikkia. Onkohan tämä sitä skinhead musiikkia alkuperäisin. Rytmit kivoja musiikki ei iskenyt

Annoying music

this is literally horrible

Didn't finish. A little too much going on for my taste

ascolto difficile ska merda

Not my cup of tea.

At least the singer let’s his accent shine. Only thing making this even worse would’ve been a yank singing.

Nyfitit

I'm not going to pretend to know what this is trying to be. It blends reggae and pop and rock in a way that takes the worst of both and complements it with bad lyrics. yikes

Only listened to half of it. Don't see it becoming much more interesting.

I didn’t enjoy this at all. I can’t stand ska. I never need to hear a single note of this ever again.

weird and off key most of the time. I couldn't finish

Eh this is like diet-ska/ska-lite to me

kedelig

This is terrible.

This is terrible. Ska is an awful genre in general and this album really exemplifies this. It is not enjoyable, it sounds terrible and I couldn’t wait for it to end. 1

This just made me so fucking mad.

Reggae britpop ska? I can see how it was influential maybe but not my favorite

NO! Early SKA music

one of the worst things i have ever listened

Reggea mixed with ska/Punk and other stuff. It feels like mixing milk with lemon making both go bad while Feeling sounding very much the same all the time.

Nothing there for me.

ska, not my cup of tea

Groupe inconnu. =>1/5

No ska

It’s not often that I spoil an album for myself by looking at the reviews on this site. Since every review gets posted, these are often as thoughtful as “dis was o k - 5 stars,” but this time, the word “Ska” was thrown around. A lot. Surprisingly, I don’t hate ska right from the get go, and I’m willing to give these crazy kids a chance, and if the fedora to band member ratio doesn’t let me down, we’re in for a treat. A Message to You Rudy - Are you listening Rudy? Put down that football, ya goof. The Specials are talking to you via reggae. I was promised ska. Not just reggae. I know this isn’t for me, it’s directly addressed to Rudy, but Jesus this is tough. Do the Dog - Do WHAT to the dog?? I hope this wasn’t the message to Rudy. With the popular connotations associated with “doing” someone, I enter this song with a mouth full of vomit and heart full of sorrow. Fortunately, we’re far more punk here and I can breathe easier. Good to have some energy. Especially those drums. It’s Up to You - I’ve been listening to this song for close to three minutes, and I have to ask. Who is it up to? I don’t think they were clear enough here. Since I will not receive a response, I will just leave this track having never known. Nite Klub - A spelling lesson from the Specials renders me speechless. Questioning every word I’ve ever written now. This song is pretty decent. Fun in places for sure. Just anuther deescent songe. Doesn’t Make it Alright - The meaningful track. With how trashy ska is perceived as being in today’s climate, it is kind of jarring to hear somebody attempt to drive a message right to the heart. I think the message here is a bad song, and the heart isbarely beating in the chest of a centuries old vampiric emperor. That means this song is tragically horrible. Despite the well-meaning lyrical content. Concrete Jungle - HOWAY THE LADS. Oh what are we doing? Get some football hooliganism on the go. I feel like standing near fighting that is happening because two teams of guys from all over the world are playing a game to the tune of a 1-1 draw. I would like the chanting to return, please. Too Hot - How about, Too much like UB-40? Lyrics aside, musically this is less London gang anthem and more Sandals Jamaica spot during a midday airing of the Price is Right. You’re losing me here fellas. Try to reel (big fish) it in. Monkey Man - I am anticipating a song that is a complete departure from previous form and is about a man who crossed his genes with a monkey in a lab, and instead of gaining the dexterity of a chimp with the intelligence of a human, he gained a senseless lust for bananas and a yearning for violence for all those who stand in the way of his favoured potassium source. No? It’s another boring ska jam? Perfect. (Dawning of a) New Era - the crazy punk vocals following the gang shouts are cool, I suppose. First bit of life I’ve gotten from this in quite some time. Rest is a bore. Blank Expression - Boring. The same song gets the same review. Stupid Marriage - I don’t know man, could it be as stupid as this song? Too Much Too Young - Hey, you know how you have a loving partner and a child? Forget that, you should be out paying for the drinks of a fedora clad lead singer of a very lame ska band. Doesn’t that sound good? This guy really hates marriage hey? Little Bitch - The classic reprisal from any spurned man. I suppose the lady didn’t take the tempting offer of abandoning her family for a few thrilling minutes in the sak with ska boy and now he’s mad. Bring on the name calling!! This song sucks, for the record. You’re Wondering Now - oh I’m wondering alright. Which number that is less than 3 will this thing get?? Hmmm. So many options! I don’t think this was a concept album considering the transition from the detailing of the boys of the streets of London and their general rudeness, to the attempted infidelity anthem(s) near the close. In saying that, there was certainly a prevailing theme of immense boredom. This music is so obnoxious to stretch over an entire album. How long this 44 minutes felt should be illegal. I’ve had more fun doing taxes. I give this credit for having moments of punk energy, but I immediately take away those imaginary points for the lame horns on repeat, the same reggae riff (THERE IS ONLY ONE), and the schoolboy lyrics. The hats can only take you so far fellas, and what was fun once, is definitely not fun stretched over the longest 3 quarters of an hour this side of Guantanamo. Right bruv, this fing is a dog’s breakfast, y’know what I mean? Haven’t got a scooby what these geezers are on about. Take the star n a half and catch the chube back to Camden. 1.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Do the Dog (Please don’t, and if you’re listening, by god Rudy go on and win that damn Fresca bowl you little scamp.)

This didn’t really hit the spot with me , it’s alright would have been ok dying before I heard it

Ska is not my thing.

It started out sounding like it could be fun, but got old real quick. Not for me, and I won't be checking out any more of The Specials.

70’s

I rate my albums based on many things, but mostly being its replayability. I simply cannot like any of the songs. They end up sounding incredibly similar. It was a good feeling for the first few, and a few songs after "monkey man" brought some MUCH needed diversity. But, other then that, I don't think I'll ever be replaying this. Favorite song: (Dawning of a) New Era It brings much needed diversity, and finally changes the sound. Worst song: Concrete Jungle Everything in the song clashes, it sounds like free jazz. Eugh. As much of an impact or resonance it may have, and how it sounded modern for the time--it ends up landing in a "boring" category for me. 1/5. I will forget this album in a few days.

Irritating

Why does every ska track sound the same?

First album i couldn't finish

You’ve done too much, much too young, now you’re married with a kid You’ve done too much, much too young, now you’re married with a kid You’ve done too much, much too young, now you’re married with a kid You’ve done too much, much too young, now you’re married with a kid You’ve done too much, much too young, now you’re married with a kid You’ve done too much, much too young, now you’re married with a kid You’ve done too much, much too young, now you’re married with a kid

Everything is pretty shippable. Obnoxious sound.

Boring and uninteresting. Felt derivative, and was also poorly mixed. I admit I'm not a big reggae fan, but there are better examples in the genre than this album

No ska

Mmh...

I don't like Ska.

reggeska od angoli, nawet to potrafia zepsuc

Every song sounds the same

Just not my thing. Appreciate that this probably was the OG Ska band but not for me.

The glazing for this album is crazy

Man on man did I hate this. Every track hurts in a different way.

Didn’t like the style. Bad vocals, kind of annoying.

Terrible

Garbaggio

Like polish wedding music.

Ska is instant dismissal. Automatic 0/10 Sorry fellas

The clash x reggae x son douteux

Two tone Malone does fish n chips ska. CIA torture music.

This was some tough listening.

Pretty bad. The writeup around this album mentions anger at economic conditions and Thatcherite social policy but I'm really not feeling that at all.

Very interesting and unique album...its like British reggae? Can't say it really fits my taste.

Didn't enjoy a single moment on here, which is unfortunate because it's not like this wasn't a well-made album, so credit where credit is due. It's just not my style in the slightest.

I see why they call themselves the specials because whoever wrote this music rides the short bus to school.

Its definitely important on putting angsty white boy raggae on the map - Luke

Ska is the worst form of music. I hate this more than I rationally should and I've let it run my day. God damn this sucks.

it's worse than pure reggae because it's harder to tune out. 🗑️

It's ok, not my style.

I generally like ska but this is not that good.

I had a blank expression on my face for most of the album. This album is perfect for blowing up a floaty raft for a day at the beach. But at a certain point you realize there’s a hole in the raft. And because of this, your kids start a deep seated resentment towards you that’ll last a lifetime. I dislike upstroke guitar rhythm very much. So obviously I’m not a huge fan of ska music, so this album was already destined to fail in my eyes. I learnt that 2 Tone was the specific genre of ska in 1970s Britain. And I love that they literally put “2 Tone” on the cover of the album. It’s like if The Clash put “PUNK” on their album covers. It’s a weird mix of 60s bubble rock and reggae ska, that just left me scratching my head and wondering (now). I don’t get it. But maybe I’m just a little bitch. Some songs had some rock elements to them, but it doesn’t make it alright because a lot of them always revert back to 2 Tone at some point. My favourite on the album is Concrete Jungle because of the rock feel and the staccato bass just jabbing through the track. The Specials. Not that special, amirite? Amirite?!

Man, I never really liked ska. I really tried to keep an open mind with this album. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it isn't nearly as bad as the obnoxious pop punk ska we got in the late 90s and early 00s, but this just really isn't for me.

If someone played this at a party. Everyone would stop talking and leave.

Prehistoric ska? No thanks.

I started with low expectations and they were lowered

My interest in these guys discography ends after ghost town man I’m so disappointed how boring this album is

You have to REALLY be a student of music history to appreciate this album. I hated it. Maybe there are some redeeming qualities of the lyrics but I couldn’t get past the music. Just painful to listen to. 0/5

British reggae mixed with bad ska. Best track: Little Bitch

Een marteling

Gangsters- 6/10 A Message To You Rudy- 2/10 Do The Dog- 1/10 It’s Up To You- 3/10 Nite Klub- 3/10 Doesn’t Make It Alright- 1/10 Concrete Jungle- 4/10 Too Hot- 4/10 Monkey Man- 3/10 Drawing Of A New Era- 2/10 Blank Expression- 2/10 Stupid Mariage- 2/10 Too Much Too Young- 3/10 Little Bitch- 4/10 You’re Wondering Now- 2/10 The Specials- 3/10

Couldn't get behind the Ska genre, couldn't finish unfortunately

I think it's fine that I missed this one I like the Amy Winehouse cover og "Monkey Man" though

Highlight - Little Bitch I just don't like Ska or Reggae.

not a fan

Typical liberals - bitching about the system while profiting off it. would give this album a zero if i could

Nope. Nope nope nope. During the first two songs I thought it's OK-ish. Maybe a 2. But songs three and four were sooo bad that I had to stop. I also hated the really weird mix. It somehow sounds like the singing and the instrumentation were recorded simultaneously but pretty far away from each other. Really weird mixing.

Not a fan

Made it a few tracks in before having to stop... I dont know what mood I'd have to be in to enjoy this

Highlight - Little Bitch I just don't like Ska or Reggae.

Couldn't get on board with this one. It's like a messy mix of ska and punk and it sounds incredibly dated.

Song verheißt NICHTS gutes...('Message to Rudy', enthält keinerlei Message).

Not my favorite, this was a bit raw, their later music was a lot more polished.

holy shit this was a struggle to listen to, like a mix of reggae and early-ish punk. dated, ridiculously cliche lyrics, nothing I ever want to hear again. 1/5.
