I am not a big Paul SImon fan. Some of his music is actually annoying. He also likes to culturally appropriate music like here Reggae and African music on Graceland.

the album was fine, nothing noteworthy. it was kinda just a nothing burger. his writing and composing are nice but I guess im just not big on folk music.

I'm a big Simon and Garfunkel fan. His solo stuff, not so much.

It's okay, I'm sure there's someone out there who really loves this album but it's not me hahaha not a HUGE fan of the acoustic guitar folky genre.

The vibes are great! It almost has a '60s sunny sound at times, and then other parts give off a '70s melancholy. After some boring folk/gospel albums, this was a much more enjoyable listen!

Well he has a terrific vocal tone. He can carry a tune. But are the tunes interesting? Not a fucking chance. Okay, Me & Julio is pretty catchy and I can somewhat relate as me and Julio did hang by the school yard when I was a kid. But where the fuck is Julio now? I replaced him with Oscar and now we hang at the gym. It’s cool but it’s not Julio, you know what I mean? So, folk records are the equivalent of classical music. Old people generally relate but they long ago stopped caring about music. And I don’t care about Paul Simon. 2/5

Way too much lightweight folk pop by Paul Simon on this list, be it with or without Garfunkel. He may be a very sweet guy and all, but his true talent is making music sound the same kind of bland despite being played by different musicians, containing diverse "world music" influences and having totally different topics and moods.

Maybe it's being forced to listen to Graceland on repeat as a kid (my Dad loved that record), but there's something about Paul Simon that just sets my teeth on edge. He somehow manages to be simultaneously New York and twee, and neither works for me. The only exception is Me and Julio because I used to work with a Julio and we'd sing that song to him on the job site. Silliness aside, I will grant there is some incredible songwriting here, but it's just not for me.

It's a good album and Paul is an amazing artist but, its not for me, not my style.

I've long suspected I was more of a Garfunkel gal than a Paul Simon one, and this album has confirmed it. The bits I like best are the ones that remind me of Simon and Garfunkel together (the pan flutes on Duncan that sound like El Condor Pasa (If I Could), for example).

Listening notes... I cant stand Paul Simon but I am going to give this a go anyway. Mother and Child Reunion: Yep, still hate it. I cant put my finger on it but this song annoys the ever loving shit out of me. Duncan: "and I was born in the boredom and a chowder"... ugh. Everything Put Together Falls Apart: What an enthralling listen. This is a prime example of what it is I dislike about Mr. Simon. Everything sounds like a reach, emotionally fake acting with a guitar and a voice that displeases me. Run That Body Down: see above. Armistice Day: Yay, Paul Simon cosplays the blues. Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard: I hated this song from the first time I heard it as a kid in the backseat of my parents car.... still do. Peace Like a River: See Armistice Day. Papa Hobo: More cosplay struggle. Hobo Blues: I hope you can hear my eyes rolling into the base of my skull. Paranoia Blues: Welp, this isn't getting any better. Congratulations: Fuckin balls. Suffice it to say actively listening to this album in full didn't really help change my long term distaste for Paul Simon. This isn't the worst thing I have heard on this list but that's not really saying much. 2 stars.

Realmente, es agradable a la primera escucha, todo gracias a ciertas melodías que resaltan entre lo monótono que se siente al estar terminando el disco, destacaría Duncan y Run that body down como las canciones que me llamaron la atención. Responde a su época, no es nada fuera de lo común pero cumple con lo que entenderíamos como una escucha agradable. le daria un 2.4/2.7 de 5, no es nada del otro mundo.

This album has come to me at the wrong place and time. Lately, I am very tired of blunt expressions lack of thought and elegance. I am a firm believer of expressionism, but this form of expression is not resonating with my current state. Maybe another time. I listened to four songs and I won’t continue. After writing this, I revisited to check if I was too harsh. Guitar is playful. Breaking down, jumping half steps. But collectively it makes me feel like I’m suffocating. I feel like it’s the lyrics.

Didn’t really resonate with me. A few standout moments though. The demo for Paranoia Blues is better than the finalised version in my opinion and the keyboard outro on Congratulations was a highlight. Peace Like a River is my favourite, the raw guitar and tapping on the body of the guitar gives it an honest stripped back feel. Paul Simon has a great voice and it really comes through there. Other than that I didn’t find it all that captivating.

I always feel like I should enjoy Paul Simon’s music more than I actually do. It’s not that it’s bad or bothersome. It just doesn’t come together into transcendent or… like, fun? There’s something buttoned-up about his music that I can’t put my finger on, and whatever that is it doesn’t work for me. He has made songs I love and I can’t really articulate what I don’t like about this album very well, so it feels shitty to rate this so low, but I was very ready to move on after listening.

I guess it’s Garfunkel I like, because without him Paul Simon is rather boring.

I just couldnt find anything about this album particularly engaging and differentiating from any other songs from the. genre. I know that this album laid out a lot of who Paul Simon became to be in later years but that doesn't make it like it. But not necessarily offensive in any way so its a 2.

Between the clunky lyrics, the vaguely racist inclusion of perfunctory nods towards "world" music (why does this open with a white man's reggae song?), and the blandness with which this now hits the ear - whether due to its influence or simply because it is actually just Quite Dull - makes this into yet another entry in my journal of thinking Paul Simon albums are pretty much fine. 2* to a fresh 2026 ear.

Honestly didn't think PS started appropriating other music styles until the grand heist that is Gracelands (which I'm sure we'll come to another day), but some of the tracks here suggest that obviously wasn't the case. Bitch over, this feels like a pretty average outing. Rarely jarrs. But never hits any emotional highs, musically or lyrically, with the possible exception of Me and Julio which carries the album. I really don't think I'll be returning to this one. And that, my friend, is a 2*

I was quite happy when this album appeared this morning. I'd never heard a Paul Simon song that I'd disliked before today. Sadly, I found a lot of the lyrics supercilious. If Paul was starting out on his life journey now, I reckon he'd be an insufferable Instagram influencer, full of pointless and annoying life hacks. Saved from a one star rating by Julio, which I can't find it in my heart to hate, even if it is a bit sub-Dylan.

4/10 - I thought the first song was the most interesting song and it went downhill from there.

This is just a fine album. It pales in comparison to what Paul Simon had done with Simon and Garfunkel and what he will do in the future, specifically with Graceland. 5/10

Just 4 days after Simon & Garfunkle this pops up. Convinced the hood of his coat on the album cover is some kind of passive aggressive dig at Garfunkle's hairdo. Me & Julio isn't a bad song but most of the album is twee shit and bland middle of the road 60s/70s folk pop with a few nods to reggae, blues and other music genres. 2 out of 5 stars only.

Simon has a good voice, and the songwriting is fine enough (although side 2 makes me question that statement). But why would ever listen to this over something like Nick Drake's Pink Moon or Neil Young's After the Gold Rush? Redundancy is what I'm getting from Paul Simon. Also, that album cover pisses me off. He looks way too goofy to also be looking that smug.

Nothing too impressive, I enjoy the instrumentals of the songs but I don’t think I’d listen to the album or songs again. I just listened to ‘paranoia blues’ and I really enjoyed that song and the production of it. Overall, this album didn’t wow me. I probably wouldn’t listen to it again but it was nice to experience something I’ve never heard before.

I enjoy the rhythm. However, unfortunately, I thought the lyrics were quite forgettable.

i was not really moved by this. the sound is pleasant and deep but i'm not a big folk fan and the lyrics were nothing special. i don't see myself re-listening to any of these songs in the near future. still, i'm glad this was the first album to pop up in the generator. i would have not listened to it if it weren't for this proyect. i'm excited!!

I like Paul Simon, but generally in small doses. I also prefer later Paul Simon, when he pushes past folk and starts experimenting with other genres. You can hear some of that here, for sure, but for the most part it's good ol' guitar strummin' and soft singing. It's okay.

A few years ago I was at party. People were laughing and drinking. Then out of the blue a guy started playing the guitar. He played really well, and he had a really nice voice. Everybody stopped talking and listened with excitement. We listened to one song. Then another one. Then another one... Then people started exchanging glances – how long was this dude gonna play ? No one wanted to be rude and interrupt, so we spent a good 40 minutes in quasi-silence, and the cheering turned into half-repressed sighs. Excitement became boredom, then unease. I’ll say it again : he played and sung beautifully... But we felt like the party had been hijacked by someone who just wanted a captive audience, and by the time it was over we felt relieved. Listening to this album reminded me exactly of that particular evening. Paul Simon is a great songwriter, he can play and he can sing, there is no doubt about that ; he crafted more than a few beautiful pieces of music. I’ll gladly listen to a couple of songs. Three or four if I’m being polite. But any more than this, and I’ll start feeling like I’d rather be doing something else. Something more exciting, and more importantly something not entirely centered on Paul Simon. Kuddos for the first song, though. Very surprising to hear a (good) reggae song at the start of the album, I didn’t expect that.

Paul Simon. Never heard of this guy. At least, I don’t think I have. Guess I’ve nothing better to do than hop right into the music. Yeah, this is pretty alright. Very of-the-time singer-songwriter music, though many of these songs lose me somewhere along the way. That being said, there are some servicable tracks in here. I like the acoustic sound of “Everything Put Together Falls Apart”. “Peace Like a River” is a pleasing tune. The instrumental and songwriting is pretty good during the chorus. I like the gaelic sound of “Hobo’s Blues”, even if it’s a little short. “Congratulations” is a solid closer. I enjoy the muffled, soft sound. Gonna read up on why this is in here. Ohhhhhhhh, Paul Simon is one half of Simon and Garfunkel. I’ve never gone out of my way to listen to their music, so I didn’t know that the band name was just their surnames. Crazy to know that “Garfunkel” is a real name. I always thought they were deliberately channelling Frankenstein vibes with that one. Anyways, moving on. “...one of the best singer-songwriter albums of the seventies” More than half of this review is just talking about Bridge Over Troubled Water, which is kind of crazy. Guess that goes to show where the enthusiasm of this reviewer lies. I’m undecided on whether this album belongs here. Wikipedia says that this album was popular and acclaimed at the time, though I’m not seeing much in the way of a legacy. There’s a generally lack of singer-songwriting albums and I’ve been snubbing too many albums of late, so I think I’ll turn a blind eye to this one.

In general, I really can't stand the "storyteller with an acoustic guitar" genre. Paul Simon is no exception. Bores me to tears. Opening up with the whitest reggae imaginable at least gave me a good laugh. One point because Julio is a damn good song... album could've just been a single.

Paul Simon continues to baffle me. Why is a song set in New England accompanied by Peruvian flutes. Lots of Incan Pentecostals? Also the Red Wings were notoriously shitty when this album was written so like. Hell of a hockey team? Buddy.

I have no patience for Paul Simon. His music is always too cute by half. Very well played, but it always comes across for me as smug and happy with itself. I find it boring and obnoxious mostly.

Ah, white reggae. The music no one ever needed. This first song is already an inauspicious start to the record. The rest of the songs are pretty bland vanilla jams. Would not revisit, even though I listened to the whole album. Thus it would garner a 1.5 properly. Better than Kid Rock, so I guess it gets a 2.

I've never been a huge fan of Simon &/or Garfunkel and this album is no different. Paul's a pretty good songwriter but his voice and delivery are not enjoyable to listen to. Even a song like "Me and Julio down by the Schoolyard" is hard to listen to because of his voice. There's really not much here to it other than how nice it feels to listen to it at times, it is incredibly calm to listen but it becomes a flaw, since that sound is consistent and there really isn't much to offer, but it's not bad. Not bad, just boring.

Kort geleden kregen we Heart and Bones van Paul. Ik heb er weinig over geschreven. Want het was vooral saai. 1,5 ster kreeg het. Dit album is meer gevarieerd. Dat heb ik wel nodig. Maar de nummers blijven saai en/of vergeetbaar. Meer dan een 2+ kan ik hier niet van maken.

Thought I'd enjoy this more but it's not doing much for me, Mother and Child Reunion and Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard are still decent though. Can't be giving it more than 2 sadly

Was expecting much more from Paul Simon here. Unfortunately found it to be dull and uninspiring. Stand out track was, Julio down by the school yard. Surprising this album actually makes the cut. Disappointing 2 stars.

Some great acoustic guitar work but a bit too slow and relaxed for me. I just can't see myself ever wanting to listen to this again. Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard is great though.

During Armistice Day, I thought he sang "Oh, i'm weary from waiting in Washington D.C., I'm coming to see my congressman, but he's a boy to me" and I thought WOAH an interesting lyric?? Then I looked it up and the line was "but he's avoiding me" and that's when i realized this album is poop

Fine. It was fine.

Very folksy and chill. Banjos and shit. 2 tracks in though and it's apparent the lyrics are dogshit. Boring story telling. It's actually starting to piss me off how dogshit the lyrics are. I'm assuming the problem is he was too young to have lived much of a life or done anything interesting.

Surely nice, but not my kind of music.

I thought it was good but I'm pretty easily excited by albums that sound cute and lively like that. In hindsight, the lyrics weren't incredible and none of the songs were super memorable for me.

Cute!

No complaints, but didn't really speak to me either. Paul Simon is a very good songwriter that seems to be known for everything save putting his heart in what he does, despite making beautiful music. At least that's how he comes off to me. I remember listening to Graceland when I was 13 or 14 because my mom bought me an issue of NME or Spin or one of those magazines that wrote a retrospective on it, and being thoroughly confused by what the big deal was. Being older hasn't really changed that feeling, I guess.

This felt disjointed, and still quite bland. I think Paul was trying too hard to pretend he was not trying. He should have saved his energy, and skipped making this.

Good album - talent of PS coming through in every track. Enjoyed the listen, some great easy listening.

I don't think I like Paul Simon. His voice is kind of annoying. 2 Stars for Mother and Child reunion, which is about a chicken and egg dish called 'Mother and Child Reunion'.

First song was quite good reggae, second song had a good instrumental. The rest was rubbish

Sure enjoyed these hits when I was young. Listening now trying to hear past nostalgia, it is more interesting than I knew, and less so too. When good, it is infectious, and when weak it feels unfinished, oddly incomplete. Punchy and weak.

Verrattuna S & G:n koko tuotantoon ja Paul Simonin joihinkin muihin soolotuotantoihin jää tämä kakkosalbumi mielestäni perin tylsäksi. Melko ruisleivälle maistuvaa perus-folkkia josta puuttuu rutkasti särmää. Pieniä kohokohtia levyltä toki löytyy. Erityismaininnan saa kappaleet "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" sekä "Paranoia Blues".

I was familiar with Paul Simon, but I had never listened to one of his albums before. This was my first experience, and unfortunately, it didn’t impress me much. I found the album to be mediocre. However, I did enjoy the tracks “Duncan” and “Run That Body Down.”

I think I’m discovering that I’m not that big of a Paul Simon guy. A couple of good songs, but mostly just banal pop music. 2.5/5

I don't think I really registered any part of that. It was background noise. Admittedly, it was a weird day. I'm getting the feeling that Paul Simon is over-represented on this list. Is Graceland on here? This and Zep 2 make me think that the author felt like they "had to" put some of the big names on here multiple times, and that anybody on classic rock radio playlists gets bonus points. But I also get that I'm rating good and culturally important albums, so one star is the worst of the best. Two stars.

For some reason, Paul Simon just doesn't do it for me. This album is further proof. It isn't terrible, but it is unremarkable and bland. I get some people like it but this isn't for me.

Oh, sorry, wrong Paul Simon. Meh, this album was ok. I’m not a huge fan of the singer/songwriter genre.

I am not denying Simon’s talent as a songwriter, but something did not click for me. I think his boyish voice needs more instrumental backing to work.

I’m not sure. This one isn’t doing much for me… relaxing album. But I can’t really distinguish the songs from one another they’re all blending together and not really standing out. “Peace like a river” is a fave and I can see that was likely and influence on lots of those early 00s folksy singers like sufjan.

Perfectly inoffensive. Interesting? Not really. Memorable melodies? Nah. Going for the album though is outstanding production, every instrument sounds pristine as do the vocals. A lot of care went in to that as it also did into the thoughtfully performed accompaniments. Unfortunately, the songwriting just isn’t very good.

Not super excited by this. Obviously a couple of hits but nothing that really stuck with me.

Paul Simon is a legendary singer and songwriter. While this album features a broad assortment of musical styles, it is mostly just lengthy folk. Fairly easy to listen to yet somewhat stale.

I think I like Garfunkel better

I think this was just really not my style. I don’t mind his song when he’s in a duo with Garfunkel but alone idk there’s something that bothers me. Objectively, it’s not bad music but it just wasn’t for my taste.

Magpie songwriting with bits of reggae, Andean pipes, jazzy folk, Django jazz, overdriven electric guitar, bluesy finger picking, to go along with the main strummy acoustic sound. The recording and mixing is crisp and balanced - every part sits just right and there's a ton of breathing room making this very relaxing and unobtrusive background music verging on boring. That said, there's a lot of subtle songwritery stuff going on in the chord changes, voice leading and all that if you tune in and pay close attention. Favorites: run that body down, peace like a river

Lot of nostalgia for this artist, but with the cringe reggae at the start tainting an okay album I realised Paul Simon kinda sounds like diet Bob Dylan. And I hate Dylan

I finished the album about a half ago and already forgot pretty much everything that I just listened to. Perfectly pleasant while it's on, but after that, not really a whole lot worth remembering

I forgot I even had it on when I was listening. I know it’s a classic artist, and I appreciate his artistry but I could live without.
