Some works of art establish themselves as inflection points in their art. SOC is one of those albums. Dre blew doors off the boom bap standard with the innovative west coast g funk sound while Ice Cube and Wren's storytelling broke gangster rap to the world. I mostly don't find the album all that listenable these days but Straight Outta Compton still slams and is always good for stoking my mostly dormant teen defiance. Fuck that Police is timeless and a good reminder that police violence against blacks isn't something new. I'd definitely encourage Mara to listen to Express Yourself but the original Charles Wright version is my preference. The rest of the album has some catchy funk worthy of an old school party.

I can't believe how catchy these tracks are yet some how atmospheric. I've never listened to this album, just the songs. Definitely enjoying myself.

I'm not a fan or particularly knowledgeable of jazz. I thought this was pretty good and gave it four stars based on reading about it's importance.
Just a great r&b rock album. If the term existed when it was released the album is packed with bangers.
I always loved listening to this album. Mr. Bright side is a universal song of loss, jealousy, and anxiety yet so fun to listen to. Meanwhile All These Things I've Done is a song about being a Mormon and yet I still crank it and sing along. Four stars just based on those two songs.
Easy 5/5
I recognize the album's greatness but it doesn't click with my tastes.
I liked this album way more than I thought I would. I bet seeing DMR back in the day would have been pretty fun.
Top to bottom there isn't a single track that's skippable.
It's Gil Scott-Heron. Always 5 stars.
This album came out in 1980. I "discovered" it in 1994 thinking it was new. Great album, wrong time indeed.
I'm not sure this album has held up over the years to be honest. Still, Living Colour's influence on me as a music listener and concert going continues to this day. Listening to Vernon Reid's incredible guitar work and Corey Glover's energetic voice brought all the nostalgia right back and I enjoyed the album top to bottom.

Did I hear a kazoo in one of those songs?
