Reviews (page 5 of 14)

buenisimo

one of my all time favourites

Best debut album ever

Yes, good

Listened to this once or twice down the years!

Classic British indie rock. Best Tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs The Drum, I am the Resurrection

Ridiculous debut from the godfathers of indie

A classic

Feel like I've been giving out a lot of 5s recently, but this is a great album that influenced so many of the bands I used to love, and some j still do.

best yet.

This is the one!

All-Time-Lieblingsplatte.

This is so much better after the previous two albums. Honestly, it could be something I wouldn’t like much on its own, but hearing it after two albums I really didn’t like gives it a boost. So yeah, I do like this one. It’s definitely heading toward that alt-rock vibe that I prefer, and it’s good background listening music. I might actually consider looking up more of them for further listening.

Loved this album. Absolute banger. It was a psych rock explosion.

Cheery mood songs :)

A real pre-Oasis, the LP started off okay, but really got more and more captivating as it went on.

4/23 Hell of an album, from the production, the melodies, the songwriting, they went all-out for their debut. Standout Tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, Don't Stop, Bye Bye Bad Man, Made of Stone, This Is the One, Fools Gold

I really liked the album. I think I'll listen to it again. 4/5

A really fun a pleasantly rhythmic album that has soft sweet moments and fun uplifting beats.

This sounds really hood what. It’s like the smiths and interpol mixed together with VERY LONG instrumental solos but it is really good i will definitely listen to them from now on wau

when you press play on the first track of this album, you can't help but feel like you've heard this before. the appreciation for this debut, like many a piece of fine art, increased over time. it makes sense, I feel like this album feels so familiar because of its influence over the genre over time, which makes revisiting it in 2026 comforting. it's like reading a book that inspired a bunch of authors after you already read the progeny of its influence. it's like watching Get Out in 2026 for the first time after hearing the third term Obama joke referenced everywhere for years.

Prelúdio do Oasis? Me surpreendi positivamente.

cool and vibey, definitely sounds ahead of it's time. maybe the first time i've got that *influential* feeling without any previous context. i don't think it packs a ton of crazy cool hits but the baseline is very enjoyable. the two big half-instrumental closers are so fun they bring the score up easy. favorite song is Made of Stone, maybe Fools Gold. solid 4

Solid, 3.5 leaning towards 4

07/04 Pretty good. Need to find a physical of this one

can be bizzare but 9/10

not for my current mood but id def listen to it when im driving in the middle of the desert or idk a car with some sunroof. but def not a vibe location wise

This was a good album! I never have heard of these guys but I liked them and this album alot

This was fun. Liked Adored the best. Last few were good but all carried on a little too long.

Was never really into English Rock, but this album has definitely helped with that. I Wanna be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Sugar Spun Sister, Made of Stone and Fool's Gold are masterclass. Don't Stop didn't really do it for me, but I can definitely appreciate the attempt at something so experimental. Overall, definitely get the hype and will be revisiting this album.

Very good album - the hits (6 out of 12) are classics, not completely bowled over by some of the album tracks, but touch and go for a 5 would certainly be a 9 out of 10

This shit picked up and got way better. Fun.

such an easy going album and definitely a good listen also as a Manchester united fan you just have to love The Stone Roses you can't hate them

It couldn't have started any better.

Me re gustó. Rock.

Not consistent enough to get a five, which is a shame as the best tracks are stratospherically high points.

First half is amazing, second half a bit too meandering, but happily surprised.

Nice. The overall sound is a little cloudy for me at times but we’ve got a lot of nice sounding guitar and some really strong melodies. Seems pretty ahead of its time. Will revisit

Neat. There are some great melodies and some neat guitar work too. Beatles-esque 60's pop rock with some sad boy mixed in works better than I would have thought. A wee bit long in the tooth at points (3.5)

Interesting alt-British rock sounds, great extended tracks

Surprisingly good album, really enjoyed the vibes

Hadn't heard about this band or album before. A hole in my music history knowledge. TIL about the Madchester scene. Overall loved it. Back half of the album is stronger than the front, to me. I can see why this is considered a rock classic.

Know The Stone Roses, haven’t really explored much beyond whatever few songs would’ve come across. Sounds like post punk meets alt rock. At times, has a more modern sound than late 80s. And at times is very 60s psychedelic. This is a fun album with a fun variety of sound. Like it better than a lot of the BritPop music that came later that I’ve encountered. I think its strength is that it does have a variety to the sound. It’s little bit long, and some of the jam songs seem to drag a little toward the end of the album. But overall I liked this a good amount. Somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for me.

the predecessors to Oasis. I really like this album. some awesome tracks like "I Wanna Be Adored", "She Bangs the Drum" and "Waterfall". ive been listening to this album for over thirty years.

Very good record. I just love the songs and easiness in which they are performed. I will say this though… their other album is better.

Not a band I ever followed. Pleasant listen.

191. good except for the end

Really interesting music that sets the mood. It has a great vibe that makes you want to go somewhere.

I really like this album!!! Such a nice vibe

Struggled to rate this one. Will give it 3.5

Really enjoyed it. Has some classic songs on and most of the songs I didn't know were solid too.

8/10 - a classic indie britpop album

nice one

Always found these to be overhyped personally. But this album does have all of their best songs luckily. First play through I wasn't impressed, but after a couple of runs through I enjoyed it more. 4 fantastic songs, and a few filler really, but the good is really good.

Overall 3.75/5: What stood out about this album was an interesting pallete of sounds. There were some really nice bass lines and guitar grooves in some of the songs. There were some very catch choruses I really enjoyed. The singing style is not my favorite and sometimes the melodies/chord progressions were a bit boring and repetitive for my taste. I Wanna Be Adored 4/5: cool atmospehric start, relaxing full sound, very 80 sounding with punch snare, 3:08 it is nice how it changes up a bit. A little repetitive with saying "I Wanna Be Adored" She Bangs The Drums 3.5/5: Nice bass line, nice harmonies in chorus, cool instrmental break, the singing style is not my favotite, reminds me of "I'll Be There for You" (Friends theme I think) Waterfall 3.2/5: cool sound to start song, she's a waterfall is a good hook, but the song doesn't seem to be going anywhere super interesting so far, nice instrumental at end Don't Stop 3.5/5: The warpy instrument being used is interesting, really long intro, really cool sounds right before lyrics start, the vocals seem to be overpowered a bit to me, most experimental song so far. Maybe not my style but I like that it is different Bye Bye Bad Man 3.5/10: Kinda sounds like the Beatles, classic minor 4 sound, like the bye bye bad man hook, nice guitar sound, I like how the drums switch up, builds up well Elizabeth My Dear 4/5: Beatiful and simple but why so short? (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister 3/5: Not a huge fan of the guitar rif at beginning, very repitive, 0:46 gets better when chords change, the second verse I like a bit more, 3:00 I like that riff Made of Stone 4/5: Like the moody guitar riff, just an alright melody, I wish it went more places in verse, good catch chorus, I just like harmonic minor 5 chord. I am alredy wanting to sing the chorus, favorite chorus so far. Shoot you Down 3/5: Like that is starts out with the bass riff, 0:53 nice when it just singing. Overall though, a little boring. I wish it changed up more the second verse and chorus to keep my interest. Good guitar riffs. My least favorite so far This is the One 3.7/5: Big intro and than calm bass line is cool idea, interesting bass line, great start, chill first verse but I hope it builds. 2:08 starting to build up, nice harmonies. I wish the chords would change up a bit more or the melody change up to go somewhere different. Repetitive for the length of the song I Am Ressurection 4/5: Like the drum into, this is a long one so wondering where it will go. 0:42 nice riff into prechorus. Good buildup. I like the insturmental part. I am glad it is not just a long guitar solo. There are some nice parts where the energy goes up and down. I think it could be about a minute shorter because I got a little bored at the end. Fools Gold 2.75/5: Groovy drums and bass line to start. The melody is a bit boring. The instrumenation does not change much and I love funk music with repeated grooves but this song is way too long for how repetitive is it for my taste. The guitar solo was good but should have come earlier. Great drumming. The end is really cool though with the added sounds.

9/10 - Really solid album. Not a weak point on the album. Really loved this. Although Im sure some will say that the album is a bit flat (the singing isn't exactly varied), the songwriting and instrumentation makes up for it - there's a lot of memorable moments on this album for me - chorus of (song for my) sugar spun sister, the soft desperate plea on This Is The One, how everything drops out for a couplet on Shoot You Down Fav Tracks: Bye Bye Bad Man, This is the one, I wanna be adored, She bangs the drums Heard before? ---–- ❌ Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? --–-- ✅ Will Listen Again? -- ✅ Album Cover -------

pretty great album. i liked “i am the ressurection” because it sort of sums up everything i like about this album. it is psychedelic but groovy. each song manages to develop and progress over time. it’s very good.

Beautiful sounding album with a sweet tone

Monumental early 90’s

This is really good. I love “I wanna be adored” and “made of stone”. Whole album has a dreamy, guitar-driven vibe

Great groove. 4.5

i wanna be adored: 8/10 she bangs the drums: 7/10 waterfall: 6/10 don’t stop: 6/10 bye bye bad man: 7/10 elizabeth my dear: - (song for my) sugar spun sister: 7/10 made of stone: 8/10 shoot you down: 7/10 this is the one: 6/10 i am the resurrection: 5.6/10 fools gold: 4/10

This is quite good. Good guitar, good writing, good vocals, with variety. A satisfying listen.

I like it! Feels as if I am in a movie while I listen.

Pleasantly surprised by this one. A late 1980s indie album that has grown on me over the day.

Classic of my 20s and still seems to stand up now.

fena değildi, klasik bir şeyler. 2000lerde çıkmış ama 60lar hissi verdi

Really great album, such a classic. Love the atmosphere created and the production. Great songs but some are better than others. A classic dad album.

317/1001 The Stone Roses - s/t Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ Yes the singles have been played to death, but at the end of the day I've never gotten tired of them. Outside of the singles, it's still very solid.

I can’t believe this was late 80’s as it sounds lush enough to be a decade or more later. This is what I’m doing this project for: expansion of my music collection and curiosity to explore more of newfound artists.

Close to 5 but lacked character

Couldn’t decide between a 3 or a 4. I went with 4. I think I’d like to listen to these guys some more. It took several listens before getting the tunes down. They weren’t super “catchy” but they were still enjoyable to listen to.

The Brit’s love their stone roses. They never broke in the US, but the follow up had a bit of a hit with live spreads - that is an awesome tune. But still - everything was all about the debut. Was pumped to hear it and yeah I get it it’s good but man I had higher expectations. I’m gonna give it three stars but feels like this one would be a grower - need multiple listens. Ok the last two songs may have taken this up to 4 star territory. Great jams.

I'm a sucker for British rock, what can I say

Reminds me of so many people, and my conception of them as a punk band a la the Ramones was pretty far off. I think I was getting it mixed up with a venue called the Stone Pony?? I hear so much in here-- the Sundays, the Flamin Groovies, the Replacements. I really like them, my idea of their music was so wrong. Definitely in the realm of music I really enjoy. Adjacent to the 24 hr party people film soundtrack maybe?

Great album. Lots of memories singing these bangers in sticky clubs and at OT. Still sounds good but there are also a couple of duds on there.

Lowkey hypnotic.

What a banger of an album. One star subtracted because Ian Brown is an absolute nut job. She Bangs The Drums is a time for all ages.

Upbeat with good arrangements and some unexpected instrumentation.

Idk I liked this!

British people have made some great music despite what this list would have you think

incredible stuff. the first three songs are perfect

A delightful psych revival effort that feels like enough of its own thing to not be a nostalgia rip-off. Ending with I Am the Ressurection and Fool’s Gold… I mean, come on, there’s not much better.

This album sounds like it came out in the early 60s. The soft tones are reminiscent of the Beatles, but with more modern production sounds.

I had only heard of the Stone Roses, never heard them, and was for some reason under the impression that they were a metal band. I don’t know how I didn’t immediately realize that was false when I looked at the cover, but it made the opening track catch me off guard. I wasn’t sure about it, but after the second track, I was hooked. For this being from 1989, it has some very ahead of its time elements. I think that if this album was released today, it could get a decent following. 4/5

It's catchy and shoegazey and proto-Britpop (which is a cool idea, even if the execution sometimes left something to be desired). Like the Britpop to come after them, sometimes it was much more about a sound and a vibe than really great songs. But this record has sound and vibe in spades - a solid 4.

I can see the progression from 80s new wave, shoegazey stuff etc into Britpop here.

It was pretty good! 👍🏼

I was looking forward to revisiting this one, since I don't think I'd given it a fair chance when I first listened. It's one of those albums where its reputation preceded it -- a reputation it would be difficult for any album to live up to. I hardly made it past "Don't Stop" because it annoyed me so much that it just seemed to be "Waterfall" again with some parts reversed. It felt like they were out of ideas already on track 4. Backing up, the first three songs range from great (Waterfall) to excellent (I Wanna Be Adored) to one of the best songs I've ever heard (She Bangs the Drums). She Bangs the Drums is seriously worth the price of admission on its own -- that guitar break in the middle gives me goosebumps every time. The next three/four really fall off a cliff by comparison. Don't Stop still annoys me years later, Bye Bye Bad Man and Sugar Spun Sister sound like average filler, and I can't hear the Scarborough Fair melody without it feeling like a Simon & Garfunkel reference. As a result, I've rarely made it past this point of the record. There are definitely rewards for continuing. Made Of Stone is the first thing that feels worthy of the opening three tracks and This Is The One is very good as well. The album's original closer, I Am The Resurrection, does go on a bit for my liking without really building into anything. Perhaps it would have been better if the band had ended it in a cacophony of feedback as they'd originally wanted. As it is, it just kind of limply fades out. Finally, Fools Gold feels like the longest 10 minutes of music I've ever heard. I don't like it -- I'm as bored listening to it as they sound while they're playing it. I can't really hold it against the album since it feels very "bonus track." This is a frustrating album for me, because I think there's flashes of brilliance that make me understand why it's rated as one of the best of all time. I can't help but think those reviews are rewarding its highlights and the influence of the band rather than the album as a whole. That does count for something -- but not for full marks.

Great Songs: She Bangs The Drums, This Is the One Good Songs: I Wanna Be Adored, Waterfall, Don't Stop, Bye Bye Bad Man, (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister, Shoot You Down, I Am the Resurrection Mid Songs: Elizabeth My Dear, Made of Stone Bad Songs:

I had my doubts, but this album rocks.

I have a vague memory of this band as something from the radio in the late 80s/early 90s, but don't know this album. I enjoyed this, it’s a pleasant soundtrack for the text on dragonfly habitat selection that I’m reading for a presentation I have to do next week. There’s some great repeating noise here and there - organ, or synths of some sort? Plus some bluesy guitar - the playing is good. Favorite track: ”I am the Resurrection,” which is a little 60s-ish, but much more interesting than actual 60s music. Well, especially once that track went off into that nice long riffy breakdown at the end. That track is the best thing on the record IMO. BUT OF COURSE the song I like best by this band ("Fools Gold"), with its funky bass and guitar and interesting muted vocals, was only on the US release. I'm listening to it now anyway, ha: take that, 1001 Albums. 4 stars

Sedan en liten svacka tills Made of stone, This is the one och I am the ressurection knyter ihop det hela till en stabil fyra.

Loserpool kan tas sin You never walk alone å köra upp i nån mörk öppning. Naturligtvis är This is the one Englands bästa inmarschlåt. Förutom tidigare nämnda This is the one har vi I Wanna Be Adored, She bangs the drum, Waterfall, Made of Stone, I Am the Resurrection för att nämna några.

The soundtrack to adolescence

Came across a Stone Roses song the other day that I liked a lot. Looked at their profile on Spotify and almost listened to this album (some reason got distracted and didn’t do so). Glad it came up on here because it was fantastic

I'm surprised that this is new to me. I vibe with it a lot. It's fun and very well thought out. There aren't any long runs of stinkers. The great tracks are interspersed very well to make it feel like it holds up to its own standards. I expect to revisit a good few of these songs. 4.2/5

Pretty good, need to give it another few listens when I'm not at work. Definitely some really good an interesting tracks.

Bouncy, poppy, excellent guitars and drums. Very interesting take on late 80s indie. Enjoyable and uplifting listen.

Really fresh, I think I needed this kind of sound right now, floating me through things

Loveee de vibe van dit album! Goede flow en good vibes 8.5/10

Hadn't heard before but it's a banger

actually so good. stupid spotify shuffled it so i listened to the last song first which was 9 minutes but i was entertained for the whole 9 minutes so that's awesome. first song is on right now, peak wishing it was summer playlist vibes. it feels very new, if you told me it came out this year i would believe you. very modern sounding. album cover is sick, love the lemons and the paint background. can't believe i've never heard this album before it is so me and what i like. kinda reminds me a little bit of the cures disintegration, can't tell they are british as much as i can the cure which i appreciate. love the drums and guitar, they are SO peak i can't. oh my GAWD, hello bass i love you. i am a sucker for sexy bass lines what the freak this is so good, feels like a song a moody teenager would be playing in their headphones/room in an early 2000s coming of age. awesome guitar very very awesome. would make a sick concert.

A grandaddy of indie rock! I want to be adored is a song that gets it

Good album. Happy nostalgia vibes. Like a happy memory during a sad day.

I liked this. I've already listened to this before and it holds up, guys.

Chill Album

1 - I Wanna Be Adored (this is the iconic song "everyone" knows. Not hard to see why. It's a perfect bridge between the moody atmospheric post-punk that influenced the development of the Madchester scene, and the dancey, good vibes Madchester scene itself. Ian Brown gives probably the best performance of his career on this song too as, despite not being the best of singers, sells every word of this) 4.5/5 2 - She Bangs the Drums (so upbeat and joyous you can't help but get up and move around. The huge vibrant bass brings everything together. It speeds up a little halfway in and that just gives the album all the momentum it needs to convince us of itself; confident and self-assured, this album has a great opening 1-2 punch) 4.5/5 3 - Waterfall (the driving, jangly guitar is the main highlight for me. The shuffling beat also makes it feel like a big trip to the great unknown, like it's a grand adventure of discovery. I'm impressed at how simple and repetitive these songs mostly are but that they don't at all feel their lengths. The psychedelic break in the second half sells this song completely for me) 4.5/5 4 - Don't Stop (the biggest and most anthemic guitar riff that transforms into a bizarre effects-laden wash of noise. There's a wonderfully bright and wide-eyed performance by Brown that pops up after 2 minutes of an utterly bizarre and kind of blissful intro. The effects never truly go away, so this is easily among the most psychedelic songs to appear in an era where psychedelia had all but faded into obscurity. Yet ANOTHER home run from this album) 4.5/5 5 - Bye Bye Bad Man (this one is among the most conventional jangly pop songs of its era. I guess this album had to slow down at some point lest the whole train be derailed... It's a fine enough song to follow up those first 4, and honestly I don't think anything really could; in a word, this one's alright) 3.5/5 6 - Elizabeth My Dear (a 50-second interlude that sounds like it should have been on an early 60s folk album and got accidentally mixed in with the rest of the neo-psychedelic jangle pop of this record. Its' actually quite memorable by interlude standards) 4/5 7 - (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister (we're back to the impassioned jangle pop that marked the opener and 3rd tracks. Brown sounds convincing here as well. To my ears, this is a small piece of pop perfection. It fits perfectly into the rest of this despite the relative absence of wild details that impressed me so much in the first 4 songs) 4/5 8 - Made of Stone (this is the closest to a post-punk song this album has reached. It's much moodier and frankly, more serious than most of the other songs here (on the verses, anyway, and only really on a "sounds like" level.) The chorus is a little too bright for my ears, with the guitars being so flashed out they drown out Brown's hard to hear lyrics. The guitar makes up for it though; another solid addition) 3.5/5 9 - Shoot You Down (I was quite surprised by how low key it all is. It's so subdued it's like the band themselves are taking a smoke break before going back to the huge ringing sound that defined the album - and the whole scene altogether. Just when you think it's about to build to something, it goes back to a low-key jam. It's solid but a little uneventful) 3.5/5 10 - This Is the One (this one has a similar build to Don't Stop with its psychedelia phasing in and out throughout the intro. The jangly section works perfectly and it's honestly so uplifting after the previous track slowed things down. The song itself sounds overjoyed to be able to play even if it comes rather late in the runtime. Yet another excellent track) 4/5 11 - I Am the Resurrection (the greatest trickster on the entire album. It sounds like a plain, conventional, 60s inspired jangle pop song for the first bit but the song's true nature sneaks up on you when that's all done. It goes from a vaguely funk inspired jam to building huge walls of guitar noise to having those same instruments solo over a more atmospheric backing, all within 5 minutes! What an epic way to close out this thing, and what a way to listen to what is doubtlessly one of the best debuts) 5/5 OVERALL - 8.3/10

Pleasingly angry jangly. I want you black and blue, don’t care where you’ve been, couldn’t stand another second in your company, shoot you down, etc. lyrics put to 60s catchy wall of sound vibe 80s music. “Citrus-sucking sunshine” is an interesting description in a song about wanting to makes someone black and blue - “Bye Bye Bad Man.” Rather cheerful sounding to a song about wanting kick someone’s ass. “Elizabeth my Dear” is short and sweet and has sound that is somehow 17th century mixed with late 80s wall of sound. I enjoy “Song for my Sugar Spun Sister.” Music / sound moves around a bit. I also like”Shoot You Down.”

8 / 10

Never heard of this, but I was feeling it.

I really liked this album. Would buy

I may not have been around for The Stone Roses when they exploded in the late 80's but I think I can agree with a lot of people and say that they should have been the face of the future of music for the time. Now looking back on it all I can do is scratch my head and wonder why didn't this sound become more popular and mainstream, it seemed destined for music at the time but then it just disappeared off of the mainstream out of nowhere. Of course as well all know now, the sound went underground and has gained quite the following in the 30+ years since this project first released. I think the lyrics on this album are painfully simple, but the production holds this up to new levels because no one had heard anything like this before, it was like trying ice cream for the first time, and it blew everyones' minds. This album isn't super consistent with the quality of the tracks but they are just so charming that you can't help but enjoy everything here. I especially love how fun the instrumentals are and you can really tell the band was having a blast making this entire project. This project helped define indie heads from the day this came out and still even today, and I think that speaks volumes about the music encapsulated in this 48 minute blissful trip through the Manchester sound.

Very good, will need to listen to this more

Unfamiliar with them. Enjoyable listen, especially the first side.

Enjoyed listening to this. Knew a few of their songs beforehand but really liked Don't Stop after Waterfall as it messed with my mind with all the reverse.

Pretty cool and chill, nice vibes.

I have to round up on this one. Subtle surf rock + a pinch of punk + all the goodness of mid 80s new wave - synthesizer. 3.75*

Love the 60s vibes

never heard of them before. pretty good! groovy. would listen to this again

A lovely bit of Brit-pop here. I really love this one, and a lot of it has to do with the John Leckie’s Beatle-esque production and psychedelic leanings of the sound. And a nice variety of tunes. John Leckie also produced t25 O’CLOCK (EP, 1985) and the long-player PSONIC PSUNSPOT (1987) for The Dukes of Stratosphear, XTC's psychedelic pseudonym. If you like this debut from The Stone Roses, you may very well love The Dukes; thei EP and LP are collected on CHIPS FROM THE CHOCOLATE FIREBALL. At first, you may think XTC is cleverly lampooning the genres they’re aping here, but it’s a loving tribute to the era and a fine album in its own right. And “Your Gold Dress” would sound quite at home on this Stone Roses debut.

Thoroughly enjoyable

great beats and guitar sounds but the low volume vocals in the mix can make it hard to listen to a little bit.

A lovely opportunity to revisit a (sonically and physically) beautiful album. The first three tracks are all time favorite songs that make me smile. The rest of the album is a surprisingly varied affair; a short, acoustic ballad in "Elizabeth My Dear", to the psychedelic remix/mashup pre-empt "Don't Stop", and the finale, an 8-minute beautiful sendoff in "I Am the Resurrection". They didn't make another album after this for five years and it's easy to see why; not much can be really said that hasn't been said perfectly here. Early singles like Sally Cinammon also hold a dear place in my heart. Check out this pillar of late 80's, early 90's Britpop.

Some interesting songs here that make this album innovative in it's time. Another band for future album listening.

Classic! I wouldn't say it's underrated since it's well-regarded. Perhaps under-appreciated?

Always felt like they never got the notoriety they deserved. Such a solid album.

1. "I Wanna Be Adored" 2. "Made of Stone" 3. "(Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister"

really good!

Their sound on this album is pretty neat, and this is a nice introduction to them for me, too. I also like that atmospheric sort of feeling that the sound of this album gives off. I could get attached to a couple songs on here if I continue to listen to them. Thumbs up.

Back end is really good honestly

loved it so much!!!!

I liked their style.

I didn't get it at first, but then one day, it just clicked. Not just this album, but the whole of Baggy. This may not be as dance-y as one might think, given the movement's association with the then emerging rave scene, that is saved towards the end. And man, what an ending it is. I have yet to try out the band's second album, Second Coming, which supposedly is so bad it killed Baggy on the spot. This album is pretty amazing, so how bad can that one be? Key tracks: I Wanna Be Adored She Bangs the Drums Waterfall Bye Bye Badman (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister Made of Stone I Am the Resurrection

Great album, more Madchester music that I have learned about only because of these albums and is a delight. Lots of varied songs with enjoyable instrumentation. Its a positive vibe that will be an easy re listen in the future. Sha Bangs the Drums, Waterfall, Shoot You Down, I Am the Resurrection and Fools Gold stood out for me.

Never had much time for the Stone Roses growing up. However, the singles on this album are all fantastic and are a staple of British rock/indie radio. Some of the rest I can take or leave but I can see why people love this album. Still can't see why they cut their hair like Ian Brown right enough.

The guitar work, the production, the *music* is tremendous. Influenced so many. Oasis before Oasis. The lyrics don't do anything for me. The instrumental at the end of I Am The Resurrection is four amazing minutes.

Very catchy jangle poppy stuff, some of the better stuff I've heard in this genre, consistently good melodies and a soothing atmosphere. A lot of great songs here

Great album! New band for me

I don't think I realised how many of the songs I recognised without realising they were the Stone Roses. Dangerous uninformed opinions aside, songs are good. The opener is a belter and its a strong album overall. Enjoyed immensely. Picks : I wanna be adored, Waterfall, Fools Gold

Cross breed of The Cure and R.E.M.

this feels like a “average” old rock album

Another album I heard many years ago, but lacked the ability to appreciate at the time. Glad my musical tastes have evolved, because this absolutely deserves the praise I've always heard for it. On the one hand, I regret being so narrow-minded in my early 20s, but on the other, it's really nice to have this as a newer discovery later in life. Lots of Beatles influence. I can hear The Kinks in there too. It's VERY brit-pop adjacent, without being easily pigeonholed into that category. Really solid release here that I’ll for sure be returning to often.

WOAAH -- this is really good

Wow, this one is great! It was clearly ahead of its time and paved the way for indie bands of the future. The music is lush, layered, and downright psychedelic at times, with interesting, hypnotic rhythms and beautiful melodies. I listened to it twice and liked it even more the second time. The whole album is a groove!

Picking up the influence they had over Libs, Manic, et. al. A little bit of psyc pop, a little bit of punk, a tiny dash of ye olde folk?

💘 I Wanna Be Adored 💘 She Bangs the Drums 💘 Waterfall 💘 This Is the One 💘 I Am the Resurrection 💘 Fools Gold

Never heard of these guys before, but overall an enjoyable listen. I don't see myself obsessing over this album, but I think I would give it some re-listens. Favorite Track - Waterfall Least Favorite Track - Elizabeth My Dear ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Shades of The Smiths - but happier.

I do have the urge to listen again. It's chill

Rating: 7/10 Was definitely enjoyable and worth listening to again. Great album for a hour long drive you done want to speed during.

Its like good but i didnt finish it cuz it wasnt peak but it was really good

It was amazing to learn this was their debut album because it was honestly a very pleasant experience.

This was a pleasant surprise, always kinda been mehhh oh this band and these songs. Have heard many of the songs on this before and they are fine, good even but kinda like mehhh. BUT listening to this full album gave me the vibe, perspective and context for the songs I've always just kinda heard every once in a while. They really elevate listening to them all together. Really great album on the whole. 4+

Started strong, enjoyed She Bangs the Drums (reminds me of pleasant valley sunday actually) Sounds very modern for 89, wouldn't be surprised if it came out in the 2000s at all Don't stop is pretty rough with the droning and reversed samples. Bye Bye Badman is wonderful; love that chorus sm Just a pleasant listen which is what i needed; cant complain at all

I like it! Would be good background music to something

Never heard of them. Very refreshing. Easygoing, it shows how an album doesn't have to overcomplicate things for it to be fascinating and a breath of fresh air (it's from 1989). Probably won't save because it's not my style, but really enjoyable to listen to through and through. A little too soft for me to listen to for 1 hour straight. Might be great for a road trip type thing though.

Groovy bri-ish pop sounding

its fine. a bit repetitive (Schwappdidudel-Musik) nice as background music but i guess it will get old/annoying fast the farther i get the better it gets! 4.0?

This finally clicked for me. Love the psychedelic britpop vibes. It's a 4.25/5.

One of the jangliest jangle pop albums, this updates the pop rock of the 60s into something dancey and psychedelic. It sounds a bit like a bridge from the Smiths to Britpop without actually sounding like either. Tracks like "Waterfall" have a cascade of guitars that wash over you. Oddly, the two best songs may be the two that sound the least like the rest. "I Wanna Be Adored" is a gripping opener, a sinister, egotistical song that bubbles up and eventually climaxes without really having a chorus. "I Am the Resurrection" continues that self-centered attitude but under the guise of classic rock. The chorus is one of the album highlights, but the four-minute guitar solo full of of bouncy drums that sends the album home is even better. There are a few weaker songs here that keep this from getting a 5, but the crisp guitars and strong hooks always make this worth coming back to.

second song is amazing! the first three songs are actually great (5/5) but then the rest of the album is alright (3/5)

First Song: started off so quiet, I turned the music up loud and scared me kinda, but love it. Def not what I would go for- I go for One Direction, Taylor Swift, Yungblud, Louis Tomlinson type music, but this is banger bro,

Just general good ass jam band music. Would love to hear this shit live tbh. My only criticism is it feels *too* easy of listening at times. But who can complain? Highlights: Shoot You Down, Waterfall

Kind of a banger 4/5

Better than expected!

i liked it. i feel like it matches with my music taste a lot and has similar vibes with the Smiths who l love. Some songs felt quite similar to each other and i can’t remember what they sounded like. i added 3 or 4 songs to my playlist. my favs so far: i wanna be adored, waterfall, made of stone. i give it 7/10

Without having heard much about the Stone Roses, I approached this album very prepared to dislike it. I Wanna Be Adored seemed to confirm my fears of another downtrodden British post-punk-inspired band that can't bring themselves to show a glimmer of anything that may be misconstrued as happiness in their music. But as the album continued, I found my expectations shaken. Throughout the album, there are certainly elements of the Smiths and the Cure, but the Stone Roses don't succumb to the one-note depression of too much of the post-punk movement. Instead, they offer a surprisingly wide variety of sounds rooted in a fusion between 60s psychedelia (Don't Stop) and Smiths-style jangle (Waterfall) while straddling the line between radio-friendly (She Bangs the Drums) and experimental (I Am the Resurrection) . The Stone Roses are not a perfect band. Vocals are generally not strong, though the layering used on some songs made for a cool texture. Lyrics are also anodyne and repetitive (almost mantra-like) at points. Likewise, this isn't a perfect album musically, lacking much flow and coherence. But there are some great moments here as well. I Am the Resurrection is a standout track, combining some of the band’s most pointed lyrics with a fun, jam band-like transition midway through the song. Even the more pop-oriented songs on the album are enjoyable listens, and the album avoids any major missteps. Altogether, this makes for a fun, distinct project that I look forward to returning to.

Achei muito pika, não conhecia

I don't like the vocals on most songs, but it is balanced out by great and original guitar playing and great songwriting. Though I've never listened to TSR before, the hits on this are obvious, but the filler tracks are good as well. 4/5

I quite enjoyed this one. It's a fun, dreamy, psych-rock sound, like if the Beach Boys did Pink Floyd. I'd love to listen to more of their stuff!

This is easy to listen to, and just a vibe. Good tunes!

Didn't know what I was headed for and I was bracing myself for more depressed British men, but I was extremely pleasantly surprised by this album. What a fun listen, poppy without being bland and sonically interesting while still launching an eye-popping 7 singles. I wish some of the vocals could be sharper and that they showed off a bit more of their dance and electronic influences on this album, because honestly I don't really hear them, but these are fairly minor issues for me overall.

Favourite tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, Made of Stone, Shoot You Down, I Am the Resurrection, Fool's Gold Love the tone of this album. Such good rock music, and from the late 80s too? If you told me this is some modern indie band I'd probably believe you. The actual album starts off a bit weak - everything up until (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister barr the first 2 tracks is too pop-y for me - but after Elizabeth My Dear we get into some amazing tracks. Absolutely loved the last 2 tracks as well. I'm a huge fan of prog so that near 10-minute closers made me scrunch my face up and headbang hard. 4.5/5

I Wanna Be Adored on 5/5, muuten ei iske täysin. 3,75/5.

Actually enjoyed the album a decent amount. Added 3 songs to my liked on Spotify too.

I really enjoyed it. I felt like you can see how it influenced a lot of British bands. Solid mix of groovy and big rock moments.

Nice, i liked “This is the one” and “She bangs the drums”

I really like the long rifts after the lyrics/singing is done. It's like a little epilogue trip. Neat! I can't really describe the feeling but this album loves to *keep on drifting* forwards when words stop. I really like the vibe I guess.

pretty chill album. really liked the song waterfall and sugar spun sister. will listen again.

Very solid alt rock infused with psychedelia. If there were half points, I'd probably give this a 3.5, but I'll round it up to a 4

Some really good Alt music. Made of Stone is my favorite track. From 1989, still feels like a modern song. This album just has a timeless feel.

I actually quite liked this. Thought it was catchy for British music

Never heard of these guys before. Very relaxed sound that holds up. It sounds like an album played on college radio in 2008

Still holds up well

8/10 Outside of this project I am very into indie music, and I have been for a couple decades now. I'm shocked that I've never listened to this band before - they are very solid indie rock. They're a few years before my listening prime so I guess that's a reason why. You know the theme song to the original Boy Meets World TV show? Like half of these songs sound exactly like that, which is not a bad thing by any means. It's not my favorite version of indie (this is sort of garage rock), but there is no denying that every song is its own thing, and the album itself flows terrifically. Good stuff.

I'm trying to push myself to respond to every album, but I have to say that's hard. I think I've heard The Stone Roses, but I don't think I knew who I was listening to at the time. I enjoyed listening to this a lot and added several songs to various playlists. While this came out in the 80s, it definitely sounds more like the 90s sound.

this was beautiful. weird, far-off sadness in realizing i had never heard of this group and will likely plug on in life without a memory of them. but they made for a nice thursday.

24/02/2026 You can tell it was a pioneering album and worth all the 4 stars I am awarding it. Spotify listeners: 2.9 million

Nice vibe few of the songs stuck with me for sure

Summer vibes, good old vibes. Favorite song: I am the resurrection

Fun album, favorited a few songs, alternative rock mostly

Made me want to be on a boat

Big fan of this album it’s a great example of the transition of British music into the 90s.

Cool album

A lot to enjoy about this one. 60s melodies with 80s jangle.

Now THIS is a Madchester album worthy of being on the list.

Hard to describe. Would definitely listen to this again.

I enjoyed this. It was rhythmic and reverb heavy, lots of different guitar sounds. Could definitely hear the Brit rock influence, it felt experimental but also somewhat expected. Didn't know that Stone Roses very well but I think they could find some room in my rotation.

I've heard the name, the Stone Roses, but I've never heard any of their music before today and I really, really enjoyed this one. It's an eclectic and poppy mix of psychedelic rock and indie rock that sounds like it could be released today to great acclaim. It's genuinely surprising that this came out in 1989.

A very well made rock debut album so of the best pre-Brit-pop/ Madchester there is out there with some truly great anthems however in my opinion for every truly great song a long there are a few filler songs, despite this it is a really well created album.

Started just fine, kind of like a revolver rip off? Towards the end was surprisingly great with the last two long songs.

Very nice up the alley, a little lengthy feeling but only an hour, 8/10

I went into this one with high expectations. After reading so many glowing reviews, I was genuinely excited to finally sit down with it. The album definitely has its moments. A few tracks really shine and show why the band became such a big deal. That said, I didn’t connect with it as much as I expected to. Some songs feel repetitive, and the energy occasionally drifts instead of building. I didn’t hate it by any means. For me, it’s good, sometimes very good, but not a five-out-of-five classic. I can appreciate its impact and style, even if it didn’t completely win me over.

Great listen. I love this small time period that helped bridge the gap between hair metal and grunge

VERY COOL i love how much they experimented in the studio. reversed drum beats are crazy. also HOLY SHIT that's where that break (fools gold) comes from??? rly enjoyable, i think jay would like it more personally though

fantastic

Kiva kevyt kesäfiilis! Rento, helppo 🌞

Another band that I knew by name only. The first songs pulled me in, they lost me for a few, then it grabbed me again. I enjoyed the bass heavier sound, and the singer was engaging. I think this is an album that needs to be listened to a few times to absorb.

I love jangle pop so this was a really fun listen! The instrumentation was layered and everything I could have ever wanted from a jangle pop album. I also noticed certain elements of baroque pop in some of the songs that reminded me a bit of the beach boys. Will definitely be coming back to this when the weather is a bit nicer outside...

This album far exceeded my expectations. I listened to the Bandsplain episode about them 6 months or so ago and that was the first time I had heard any of their music. "I want to be Adored" is a hell of a way to begin the album and for the most part even though the remaining songs are different the album is one good to great song after another.

Pleasantly surprised. Some filler songs but also some really strong aspects. Made of stone is awesome.

No private session used for Spotify. I have listened to this one a lot, it's a great album. Really unfortunate we didn't get more out of this band in their prime, or maybe not, maybe it would have been more of "Second Coming" and less of this.

I liked it, good flow

Great album, banger after banger.

Surprised how many of these songs I knew already. Really liked the whole record.

Used to play Fools Gold when it was new during my DJ shift at the college radio station so I could smoke a bowl at 3am with my dorm mates outside the building. At just under 10 mins it was a great smoke break song.

Right up my alley! Great discovery for me

Great instrumentals, very chill 80s vibe

Taki przyjemny indie rock. 7/10

I liked this a lot. A blend of 60s psychedelic and late 80s alternative had to be done really well and it was

I've already listened to some of the songs from here, but never sat down and listened to the full album. I really like the start and the end, particularly I Am The Resurrection and Fool's Gold, though I can admit that the middle kinda loses me a bit.

Easy listening, great for putting on in the background

Loved loved loved the beginning of this, but it faded to background noise by the end. 3.5/5, rounded up Songs added to playlist: - I Wanna Be Adored - She Bangs the Drums - Waterfall

Started slow for me but really really enjoyed th least handful of songs

Couple of notable moments, but I wasn't looking at any of the song names. Otherwise this one was just a decent jam sesh that kinda blended together. Could probably be worth a relisten. Was going to go with a high 3 here, but then they finished strong with Fools Gold.

Don't Stop is very Beatlesque. Second half of I Am the Resurrection was a trip. Fools Gold is also jammy. I didn't get to write down my thoughts as it went on, but this was a very solid album.

Not bad for a debut

only ever listened to “I wanna be adored” and I’m so mad I didn’t listen to the rest of the album sooner.

Fun enough, but it really felt like they could use some caffeine by the end

There is something special about an album that you've never heard before ending on the two strongest, and longest, songs of the whole album. I Am the Resurrection is amazing and Fools Gold is right behind it. The first part of the album wasn't as strong for me, but it picked up and drove home real strong.

I once dated a British guy who was shocked and appalled I'd never heard of the Stone Roses. That was valid. I could rock out to "I am the Resurrection" on repeat for long stretches. This whole album is pretty bingeable (with some duds in the middle).

Another one from my first run of this project. I remember being in a discord server and this 4chan boyo I met in college (for the record, we met ON 4chan, then worked out we went to the same uni. What a wild ride that was) really took to the album. I didn’t like it much at the time. Another case of having different sentiments years later. It does have a tendency to fade into the background but it’s quite ethereal. It has the elements of shoe gaze I enjoy and none of the elements I do not. A bit of that flower power 60’s folk vibe to it, too.

4/5 Stars Top Songs: Sugar Spun Sister, Made of Stone, I am the Resurrection

John Squire 🎸

Rare example of the drummer being the best musician in the band. 60% all time bangers, 40% pure filler. Good enough to overcome the terrible singer.

Peaceful and calmly. Sometimes interesting, sometimes bored. Maybe someday, I will listen this again.

I enjoyed this album, it had a raw energy and twangy guitar sound that I liked.

This was much better than I expected. Banger songs on here.

This gets a thumbs up. I seem to enjoy the new wave sound from the 80's that incorporates some of that of 60/70's guitar work. Top tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Waterfall, (Song for My Sugar Spun Sister)

I’d never really dived into this band before and only knew them by reputation, but this turned out to be a good listen. It’s got some cool indie vibes, mixed with a bit of punk energy. The album loses me a little on the back end, but the last two tracks bring it back around. “Fool’s Gold” is top notch.

Made of Stone! Elizabeth my dear should be longer Shoot you down is good!

It's pretty good, its a mix of 80's punkish rock plus a little bit of groove to it. I feel like there could've been a bit more energy to it, but overall it was pretty good. 7/10

I Wanna Be Adored Waterfall (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister Made of Stone This Is the One I Am the Resurrection

I really enjoyed most of this album. Felt like proto-Oasis in its sound. This is one that may deserve multiple listens, and that I could see wanting to bump up to a 5 later. The guitars and the riffs did it for me on most tracks, but honestly the track that may have sold me was the 0:53 track Elizabeth My Dear, which used the Scarborough Fair melody.

first truly good album i’ve had in a bit. nice to see the uk have something that’s not total garbage.

favorite - i wanna be adored 8/10

I loved this album and what it had to offer. The energy and mood of it perfectly suited what I look for in music.

Crazy how they made a man who can’t sing sound good.

This *should* be for me... And yeah it really is.

not ly thang good for train rises thoufh

Missed the boat on the Stone Roses, and this has made me wish I'd remedied that sooner. Such a great album - a distinct feel throughout, and although it's very much of its time, it wouldn't be out of place if it was released today. Totally deserving of all of its acclaim. Standout tracks: Made of Stone, Shoot You Down, Fools Gold

very good album, perfect intro to psychadelic-adjacent music. reminds me of what my dad used to play.

Nice album. Very well done.

Enjoyed this album, reminded me of other favorite rock bands from that era (the smiths, pink floyd). I started to lose interest at the end, last couple songs were a bit too long for my taste.

Often brilliant. What Oasis probably thought they were doing, taking the sound of the 60s and giving it an interesting modern sound. Great production. Only problem is that in a few cases things sort of descend into introspective knurdling.

4.5 fantastic album

i don’t hate it and i don’t think i’ll hate all of them they are all good

Back half of the album is better. Favorite song: I am the resurrection. Honorable mentions: (Song for) sugar spun sister, Made of stone and shoot you down.

Why have I never listened to this before. Not perfect but really good. Knew some of the tracks already but never knew it was them. Will listen again

Really like this

Some great songs, some less great songs, I listened twice

Can’t believe how much I like this. I knew I Wanna Be Adored but the rest of the album is pretty different from it. 4.5 stars, couldn’t go to 5 as there are albums in another tier.
