Reviews (page 4 of 14)
It’s one of the greatest albums of all time, if not the greatest.
Fab album. As as Oasis fan, cannot fail not to like this band. This was, in my opinion their best album. 👍
Insanely good, nothing but winners, I Wanna be Adored
As far as debuts go, this is one of the very, very best. King Monkey and his court absolutely killing it, start to finish. As a bonus, the Spotify version linked here also has Fool's Gold tacked on the end, which is epic.
Maybe a 5 could be a bit high, but this is sandwiched between a U2 album and an Elbow album, so it's the only thing keeping me alive right now. Full of bangers front to back, but especially at the front, and ESPECIALLY at the back. 'Don't Stop' could maybe do with being a couple mins shorter but otherwise no complaints.
Killer. Music to my 90s kid ears.
A purely creative and firm statement of art. Joyful and moody, quiet and reckless. What most SHOULD be.
she bangs the drums…
Much much better than I remembered
Love this album. Joy Division / Sonic Youth vibes. Amazing new wave sound, just the right amount of distortion and reverb to compliment the lyricism without being too distracting. The experimentalism isn't necessarily groundbreaking given that the album was released in 1989 well after the peak of new wave, but the band's sound still manages to feel fresh. 4.5/5, rounded up. Fave tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, Don't Stop, Shoot You Down, This Is the One, I Am The Resurrection
Wow - this album is amazing. I had not heard this before, but I love absolutely everything about it. It's extremely well executed, the band is so tight and the production quality is stellar. It starts off with some quiet but beautiful longs, and then just ramps up the energy from there finishing with an 8 minute groovy jam. The guitar playing is something else, especially on the last 4 tracks, such smooth riffs and backed by a tight drummer. Great discovery, I've already listened to it 3 times... Fav Tracks: Waterfall, Made Of Stone, Shoot You Down, This Is The One
Before listening: I really like the Stone Roses, although I must say that most of this love came from the Greatest Hits album. They only had two albums so it's kinda weird to have a Greatest Hits but tell that to bloody Savage Garden. I don't know how far the Stone Roses could've gotten if they didn't run into all that trouble. Their sound was awesome, they had charisma, and the songs were there. I really wish that we saw what could've been. But I guess we got Oasis so all was not lost. After listening: I'm gonna give this five stars because I wanna. Not all the songs were great (or even good) which is usually my prerequisite for giving an album five stars but I really don't care - the top songs are some of my favourite of all time.
Stone-cold classic, mind-boggling how precisely every melody hits, every guitar line, texture, think I wrote this off for a long time unduly but have come around to it the past couple years. This thing just exudes assuredness and because it was already retro-looking it honestly still sounds great today. It’s clear to see it’s slipped a bit in stature over the years but it deserves its status as a classic, just an absolute joy to listen to.
There's an alternative universe where Nirvana never signs with DGC and Smells Like Teen Spirit doesn't set the music world on fire in 91. In that world, I think The Stone Roses end up a household name and really define the sound of the grunge movement. Honestly, they still kind of did just 10 years ahead of their time. I'm so glad to find bands like this. I had never heard of this band before and even my most keyed in music friends hadn't either but they're great. They are a bit of a grunge Led Zepplin, a ton of excellent syncopation in the rhythm section, borrowed ideas from other bands completely repackaged and made fresh and exciting and dynamic virtuosity from pretty much every member of the band. If the rest of there material is as good as their debut I'll be listening to them a ton. Worst case I'll enjoy the hell out of this album a few more times.
Glorious sensational album from a brilliant band thank you 🙏🏼
I loved this album when it came out, listened to it a lot subsequently, but not recently. I wondered if it would still hold up, or if I'd find I no longer loved it. Happy to report it still sounds awesome - a very easy 5.
Makes me feel 18 again
Automatic 10 for this classic
Blew me away. Really like the brit pop feel with a lot of variety and psychedelia
The saddest part about this album is that they could never recapture the magic they found here. So many good songs, but I Am the Resurrection is always a favorite. I love the whole thing even the weaker songs, it’s just so joyous and full of outstanding hooks.
I kept adding song after song to my playlist of stuff I wanted to return to as I go through this project. I was looking for reasons to keep this as a four-star rather than a five-star, and I couldn't find them. This shit rips. Hope to return to it in the future.
Sublime album. Soundtrack of it's generation
Loved it.
Amazed that this is from the 80s, could have come out 2008-2014. Some Cure vibes. Really digging this album. This is why I like doing this project, for discovering albums I really enjoy like this. too bad it happens like once a month and >30% of what I come across is terrible. 5*. Good vibes, pleasant sound, enough variety. Highlights: waterfall, i wanna be adored, this is the one, guitars in i am the resurrection
Absolute classic! Great album from start to finish.
Surprised by this, immaculate vibes
For my money, the best guitar-driven pop/rock album for at least 10 years on either side of it.
I love this one. I love how many directions it goes. Purely coincidentally i got elizabeth my dear pop up in my recommended and so i thought this was going to be more of a folky album, which i wouldnt have minded, but how many genres they go through and do it all well makes this one special to me. To be able to do folky ballad and then funky breakdown in the same album is exactly what i crave. I love the laidback guitar and how it doesnt feel dated at all. Love
This album could not be made any more for me if they tried...maybe throw in a few horns, but they don't really fit this music anyway. Between this, Daydream Nation, and Marquee Moon, I think I've found my gospels of alternative music. The funky ending is the ultimate cherry on top for me--seriously, what an album. I fully intend on wearing it out as much as the others I listed. Favorite track: I Am the Resurrection
Just spent the last 2 hours listening to ok-ish albums on this chart to catch up after a wayward weekend. Then this appeared. There is a definite wide gap between merely good albums and records that are legendary, a definite quality and prescence that marks them out for greatness. This is one of the latter. Their sound conjures up a swagger and a time. It's pure bliss and even 30-odd years can't erase that.
I love it
5 Stars, no questions asked, no response needed. Simply one of the best albums ever by one of the best bands ever. This is the one, everything else is just amateurs.
Never heard of this group before but really liked the album
I dig this album.
A masterpiece, and considering it's a debut album is mindblowing. A flawless mix of 60s psychedelic jangly rock with late 80s indie dance. Incredible songwriting and performances throughout, it's just so catchy and singable. This record sets up the wave of 90s Britpop to come, and remains a timeless classic.
I can feel the earth begin to move I hear my needle hit the groove And spiral through another day I hear my song begin to say Kiss me where the sun don't shine The past was yours But the future's mine You're all out of time I don't feel too steady on my feet I feel hollow I feel weak Passion fruit and holy bread Fill my guts and ease my head Through the early morning sun I can see her, here she comes She bangs the drums Have you seen her, have you heard The way she plays? There are no words To describe the way I feel How could it ever come to pass? She'll be the first, she'll be the last To describe the way I feel The way I feel This is a pretty damn good album. 5/5
I never listen to this anymore but good god did it form the groundings of my musical awakenings. Also the Inspiral Carpets. Heard these and yes it sounded like nothing else to me. Can't remember which song was first but I think it was Fools Gold. As soon as I was old enough I was digging around in vinyl shops for anything I could grab. And loving copycat stuff like Jesus Jones. They were played endlessly in the indie clubs I lived in during the 90s and beyond. Probably still are. It is a crime to fade out I Am the Resurrection before the bass solo which kicks off the instrumental section. So yeah, five stars. Also I hear This is the One regularly at United as the team walks out, when I get to my seat in time. Those two don't really ever get old.
Lets see what the indie-rock hating classic rockers score this - probably the best indie rock album of them all.
She's a waterfall is a classic track. A truly amazing album!
A diamond from the beginning till the end. One of the best albums of any type of music.
Pretty solid overall. Liked the cover art. Edit -- I have a lot of the songs saved, low 5.
Hadn’t heard of this but it was SO good!! 9/10
I liked it, first song was the best 9/10
Feels like I've been handing out a lot of fives recently, but this album was great. Never been a huge fan of this kind of mellow old British rock, but something about this album had me vibing the whole time. Good mix of different stuff, and a bunch of great songs. 10/10
Lol, I just bought the Man City collab Jersey for this album. Absolute classic chock full of Jangle-Pop and Alt-Rock bangers
Forgot how good this was.
Unique
Noice
Nice, lekkere verscheidenheid van stijlen
Thoroughly enjoyed this. first a Confession. I couldnt differentiate "queens of the stone age" from "stone roses" before listening to both in the last month (here). track 1. First 15 second impression of "I wanna be adored" - ah - some of the "war on drugs" eternal floating cinematic feeling. track 2. "she bangs the drums" Ah, one fo the best happy songs of my youth! (I didnt know i liked the Stone Roses!) Overall really enjoyable, and a nice reminder of the style and era, except some tracks later on went on a bit/or overdid the 'spcey distortion' . Overall a breezy album - "this is the one is that 90s sound I liked in a rnage of bands - That late night sound the church did so well in "under the milky way tonight" - oh yeah, that rooftop party, remember Nigel/Matt?.
I needed the sound of this album badly. When I think of the 1980s, this is the sort of instrumentation I think of, but it also blends in so much of what I love from the early 90s. It’s a great album to just throw on and listen to even if you only care about the instrumentation, but lyrically and vocally, I think every song here has some kind of validity, whether it’s in how they made me feel, or in terms of its actual subject matter. I’m gonna go with a 5, if only because this album really lightened up my kind of stressed out mood, and I think it’s just hitting on all of my musical sensibilities. It’s not perfect, but I do think it’s much closer to a 5 than it is a 4.
What an opening track and the last song is such a classic. Great album
Great tracks for debut album.
5 MILLION ⭐️
Atmospheric jangle-pop interspersed with innovative dance beats. Still sounds fresh and relevant. Definitive recording that documents the Madchester era.
Favourite tracks: I wanna be adored; she bangs the drums; Elizabeth my dear; waterfall; made of stone; I am the resurrection; this is the one; fools gold
I hadn't even heard of these guys but really liked this album. It's interesting how it grew in popularity over time.
I want to be adored, bye bye bad man,
Warm and fuzzy pop tones. A college favorite.
A stone cold classic. Starts off near perfect and ends on another crescendo, only slightly dipping in the middle. Will never pass up the opportunity to listen.
I don't have anything negative to say, I enjoyed this a whole lot.
Dude that was sick
Classic!
fitting and kind of funny that I got this one right after an Oasis album. the influence is really clear and, not being a huge fan of Oasis, throughout a lot of that album I just wished I was listening to the Roses instead. love this album, was genuinely obsessed with it 8-10 years ago and it still stands today. era-defining sounds. prime example that you don't need to be able to sing to be a good frontman. while Ian's personal politics do make me see some of the lyrics in a different light, the tunes are still fantastic and I'm delighted for this nudge to revisit it.
Solo con I Wanna Be Adored y Fools Gold ya merece la pena, y luego hay otros temardos. 5.
A few bangers on the album, like waterfall and I am the resurrection, but a lot of the tracks do seem like filler. I really great though
An album that was on repeat for me about 15 years ago. The bass is stanky, the guitar is crunchy, the drums are marchin, the vocals fit perfectly. There are a couple songs that I would usually skip but with a full listen this album flows pretty fantastically until the last two songs which would have been fine if they weren’t nearly 10 minutes each. Other than that there are some really fantastic songs. 9/10
Brand new artist but Wow, really like this one! Reminds me a lot of different bands like Poison, the Cure, Duran Duran, even the Beatles.. but there is such a variety across the album it speaks to the talent they have. “Elizabeth My Dear” sounds exactly the same as Scarborough Fair, and therefore in my opinion the weakest. Loved them all so hard to choose my favorite for my Spotify playlist but I have to go with “She Bangs the Drums”
Oh, this one! I’ve almost forgotten how much I like it. Five stars out of five for these young gentlemen!
Bought this on a deal while browsing in a superstore on Oxford Street, on cassette, having no knowledge of the band. This was some years after its release, around the time another band from manchester were becoming super popular. The album had glowing reviews. Well what a revelation. A super collection of songs bookend by two stunners. Everything just works, a testament to their readiness and the production team.
Excellent! Never heard of them before.
This one caught me off guard. I hadn’t enjoyed any of the Brit pop/indie style bands that had come up so far. This however was superb, some absolutely classic songs that I had no idea belonged to The Stone Roses. I ended up listening to their follow up album too and also enjoyed it. Superb.
Iconic
A generous 5 maybe as it's not perfect throughout and Brown can't sing, but it's bookended by some of the best songs of its era.
Best
Starts strong and ends strong. Shoegaze-y sound for some of the songs. Indie-pop-dance to other songs.
Stunner
Superb
Three of the best musicians of their generation and Ian Brown. Incandescent.
Madchester's finest moment and easily one of the finest debut albums of all time, a fully birthed masterpiece that was very much of its moment (though a very distinct reading of that moment) . This band came hyped to the heavens (at least in college radio circles) and more than delivered. They were to be taken much more seriously than Happy Mondays and Oasis (who took themselves – or at least their pursuit of stardowm – way too seriously to be taken seriously). Quality hooks abound, on both rockers and slower cuts. Speaking of, "Bye Bye Badman" and "Shoot You Down" are both excellent. "Resurrection" and "Sugar Spun Sister" and "Made of Stone" are best of upbeat tracks. But there are exactly zero duds or dips. That the very good "Elephant Stone" and the transcendent "Fool's Gold" were left off speaks to the quality. And "I Wanna Be Adored" is a near optimal opener, commanding attention and setting the stage. Vocals are a bit of a weak point, but ace drumming and idealized guitar playing (not the showiest or most skillful but perfectly suited to materials and original as hell). Leaving Easily a 5 if one includes "Fool's Gold" as was on the US release, but a 4.5 even without it, rounding up because it's just that good, even though one sorta feels they slipped into the "Where Are They Now" file and because one has always taken it personally that one never got to see the legendary live show. Brown's late-on politics not helping either.
All time great album. Perfect, start to finish
Rating: 9.5/10 Amazing album, one of the best debut albums of all time and one of my favorite albums of the 80s. The instruments sound so bright, this album always puts me in a very good mood. Songwriting is great, very catchy vocal and guitar/bass melodies throughout the entire album. The band also really shines when simply jamming out, like on I Am the Resurrection and Fools Gold. Favorite songs: I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Waterfall, Bye Bye Bad Man, Sugar Spun Sister, Made of Stone, This Is the One, This Is the Resurrection, Fools Gold. Least favorite song: Don't Stop.
Love this album. All the elements are just so strong. Amazing rhythm section driving these tracks. John Squire is all over the place. Hendrix at times floaty shoegaze at times. Sure, Ian Brown can’t sing but he may well be a genius (Waterfall/Don’t Stop is maybe cleverest combo ever). I guess listening now, it does drop off a little in the middle, but that’s possible just because the start and end are so damn good. In my top 5 of all time.
Great - listen to this again
Nice album. I think this might be one that you need to go through a couple of times to appreciate, but I certainly do now. Apart from my personal low point of 'Don't Stop', which is basically 'Waterfall' reversed with some additional lyrics, most tracks keep a high bar and are both varying and interesting. I know 'Oasis' is a band that has drawn a lot of inspiration from 'The Stone Roses', so they were definitely unique during their time. Weak 5 for me!
Wowee, this one is a treat. The vibes and aesthetic with this are immaculate. Makes me think I’m in an old roller rink / arcade. The instrumental work is great as well. Even though it’s very 80s, I appreciate the drums the most. Very cool! I very much recommend this if you haven’t heard it.
All time great. Strong correlation between being from the north West of England and having a 5 star album. Makes you think.
4-5, never quite got into them before, just kind of missed them. Had heard a lot of this individually previously, but never in one go. Really good album, things like this are part of why I've been trudging through some of the others on this list.
A masterpiece
One of the best albums of all time. Nuff said
4.5 Might just be my favourite Britpop album. I've listened to it front to back and back to front so many times I think I'd be able to recite it. Fave songs: Made of Stone, I am the Resurrection, Fools Gold, She Bangs the Drums, Bye Bye Bad Man
Perfection from beginning to end.
ive listened to this album 1 million times. I own a set of garden Gnome Roses. Never a bad listen.
5+ Stars (15/15)
This is totally my cup of tea. Just something about The Stone Roses that makes me feel good. Fools Gold is my absolute fave track.
This was popular with the crowd I ran with back in uni, but I never had a copy myself and never spent too much time with it, so the nostalgia bump is low level. There are some definite 5 star tracks, but I wasn't as sold on the other tracks - there's some filler, for sure. I'd probably say 4.5 stars overall, but in this instance I'll round up, partially because King Woman did an _awesome_ doom metal cover of "I Wanna Be Adored", and the Flaming Lips and friends' cover of the whole album is fun too... Fave tracks - "I Wanna Be Adored" takes the top spot, but "Waterfall" and "I Am the Resurrection" get honourable mentions too....
-Madchester, dance, rave, Brit-pop, progressive, psychedelic -great guitar and bass work -I was introduced a couple of years after it was released, and it has stuck with me since then
Was a staple in my cassette deck I'm high school.
This record oozes confidence, arrogance and melody from start to finish. You don’t need to subscribe to Nad Hester to be swayed. Just brilliant.
For years I thought they were saying, "I want to be a dog" Five woofs
This album had been on my “to listen” list for along time and holy hell am I mad I waited this long. An absolutely incredible album. I love the low-fi 60s style production and the pop melodies mixed with beautiful guitar work. I went in expecting some generic Brit pop and came out absolutely wowed.
A heater to start off the week. This feels so 70s it’s strange to think of it coming out in 89. Love the psychedelic, chill vibe and how off the rails I Am The Resurrection gets.
I am so thankful for being born in 70s, so when I was in my twenties gold music era erupts... From Seattle to Manchester, those bands shape the world, humanity, FREEDOM, put some fundamental rocks in the wall of future which help me even now when I am almost 50. From that point of view, every time I hear 'Made of Stone' or 'She Bangs the Drums', or 'Waterfall', or 'I Wanna Be Adored' I am thankful and touched. Made of Stone was on every mixtape I made that time. Every. And Ian Brown was coolest guy on Earth in 90s.
30+ years on I can still picture the first time I heard this magical album. Love at first listen.
Some of the songs blur together, but this is an EXCELLENT album. I am blown away by the guitar and bass.
Such a fun album that flowed throughout the entire time. Would be happy to listen to this any time
Great!
One of my favs
Sturluð rokkplata. Með því betra af britrockinu. Þétt alveg í gegn og nokkrir legendary hittarar. Waterfall er besta lagið á plötunni en ég peppast ekkert eðlilega af I wanna be adored og She bangs the drum. Filler lögin meira að segja skemmtileg.
If the Beatles never developed new sounds and just kept going with their original Hard Days Night and Please Please Me sound they would sound like this
It's a sound I like.
Always great when you know it's going to be a 5 before spinning it up
A little trippy. A little rock-y. Had never heard anything by them, but I think I'll be back.
Great album full of classic songs. Great to finally listen to this amazing album from a great band.
Epic.. A masterpiece.. This album is the pioneer of an era
Classic.
Outstanding
This debut is just too good. 'I Wanna Be Adored', 'Waterfall', the nice Simon & Garfunkel nod on 'Elizabeth My Dear' - it's all so enjoyable! 'I Am the Resurrection' pushes the album into a stone cold classic.
There’s no excuse for it being that long since I last heard this. Every song is brilliant and you’re left with an almost perfect debut album. Then to close it off “I Am the Resurrection” comes along and finally makes it just that. A perfect debut album.
I wasn't looking forward to this album that much at first. It just kind of seemed like another random uk rock album I had never heard of to pad out the 1001 albums. Instead, what I got was arguably the best rock record I've listened to for this project so far. This thing is spectacular! I'll start with my one complaint, however, and that's the fact that I can't understand the singing sometimes. That's not a huge issues though, and the singing is good otherwise. The instrumentation kind of reminds me of Meat is Murder by The Smiths, but better, in my opinion. I did like that album, and in retrospect I'd probably bump it up to a low 4/5 instead of the 3 that I gave it, but I do like this album more. I think it's a pretty unique album that defined a somewhat important cultural scene back in the day. I think some of the ideas like having one song that's basically the one before it but backwards is a pretty novel concept, even if Don't Stop is probably the worst song on the album. I really liked the other songs though. Songs like Made in Stone and She Bangs the Drums really stuck out to me as being top-notch. The whole album has a fairly consistent tone, yet still gives some variety. Overall, a phenomenal album that I can't believe I hadn't heard of until now. 5/5.
2016 for me was listening to this album on repeat. It's a terrific record full to the brim with catchy and melodic power pop. As far as debut albums go, it really doesn't get much better than this. Four and a half. Fave track: I Am The Resurrection
I love this album and it’s sad that that they had a bright future but the problems with the band stoped them
Very strong 4.5/5. I think the melodies or maybe lack thereof keep throwing me off. Like I expect a song to go one direction and don't know how I feel about where it goes instead.
This album is SO beautiful, genuinely one of my favorite records ever. Solid 10/10. Trippy as hell but also comforting.
lovely
One of my favorite albums of the era.
This album gives now, in the year 2023, an almost melancholic and nostalgic vibe. I love it! Rich but not overburdened instrumentation that creates a room to breathe for the vocals about love and desire.
Much better than funkadelic
Awesome!!!
Awesome album. A few tracks I recognise but never knew the name of, especially the last song. Will listen again.
I Wanna Be Adored - 9/10 She Bangs The Drums - 9/10 Waterfall - 9/10 Don't Stop - 9/10 Bye Bye Bad Man - 9/10 Elizabeth My Dear - 9/10 (Song for my) Sugar Spun Sister - 9/10 Made of Stone - 9/10 Shoot You Down - 9/10 This is the One - 9/10 I am The Resurrection - 8.5/10 Fools Gold - 8.5/10 TOTAL - 107/120
I never liked the little I've heard of their music - a mate in the '00's was a monster fan - & I always thought Ian Brown came across as a very unappealing character. Both views were formed years ago & before Brown's transformation during & after covid into one of the UK's foremost public idiots, and in combination were more than enough to prevent me from exploring them further. So it was with a very heavy heart when this came up that I recalled my vow that everyone gets a chance & I'll listen to every minute of whatever gets listed. Well, I was clearly listening to the wrong Stones Roses tracks, because - through the most heavily-gritted of teeth - I have to say that this album is utterly brilliant, almost every track has gone straight into my library & will be played plenty of times in the future. And that just goes to show one of the reasons for doing this - to bring to bear a greater knowledge that will challenge & sometimes change, strongly held views.
Fan vilken fröjd att få en ursäkt att lyssna igenom detta mästerverk. En skiva som ALLTID måste finnas med i diskussionen om tidernas bästa album. Bra på så många olika sätt. Ian Browns röst i I Wanna Be AdoooooOOOOred. Jam-outrot i 'Waterfall'. Hur 'Don't Stop' är förvirrande men samtidigt världens mest självklara. Temposkiftet vid "I've got bad intentions" i 'Bye Bye Bad Man'. Andhämtningen 'Elizabeth My Dear'. Basgången och gitarrsolot i 'Made of Stone'. The coolness i 'Shoot You Down'. Explosionen i 'This Is the One'. Bästa låt: I Wanna Be Adored.
A classic, absolutely going to my must-have list.
this is an album that i have been meaning to listen to for years and just haven't gotten around to. based on what i've heard, i figured it would be right up my alley. and, yeah, it pretty much was. this felt like the jangle of REM or the Smiths meets the psychedelic pop of the Beatles or the Zombies. which, if you know me, sounds exactly like music i would enjoy. no surprises there. a fun one!
One of my all time favourites, a couple of dud tracks but overall fabulous
This is one of the greatest debut albums of all time. Full of groovy, psychedelic rock. I often think "Fools Gold" is on this one, but that's not the case. Starting an album with "I Wanna Be Adored" and ending it with "I Am the Resurrection" is not too bad either. I guess modesty is not their virtue.
Got original in 1985. Still brilliant!
Oh man, it's a 5. Years since I sat right through it. Still holds up. That the weakest track probably yields the single most beautiful moment tells you something, I think. Ordinary lads, not afraid of beauty.
Really enjoyed, light funk / jam band feel over what seems like an evolution halfway between Paul Simin’s Graceland and 90’s rock feel.
You could have told me this band was more modern than it was. Timeless rock I dig em
This album rocks!
4.5/5
There is no debate about this one being here. Despite being it's actual living demographic - an indi kid turning 19 the year it came out and lapping up its licks and groves - this is a stand out album that stands up now. Ian Brown may not have been able to sing away from a studio but on record he created the melodic and lyrical lines that could be underpinned by the swirling arpeggios of sound from John Squire, the relentless grooves of Mani and Reni. Sometimes everything just works, and this is one of those albums. Rarely it also doesn't have a duffer - we can argue the merits of Don't Stop maybe but let's not get too picky.
Halfway between REM and The White Album. Definitely worth a re-listen.
I dig the overall vibe of this album. I’m surprised I’ve never heard of this band before!
Amazing start to britpop.
An absolute classic. There's a duff song in there for sure but overall it's a masterclass in great musicianship. All this for a debut? Amazing.
Easy 5. Where has this album been all of my life? This was brilliant. Excellent listen front to back. The first 60 seconds of the first song I was like, "Oh. This is going to be good." Soothing and nostalgic guitar and vocals! Reminds me of Polaris and The Adventures of Pete and Pete. And to think this was their debut album. Wow. What a treasure. I can't believe I went over 30 years of my life without ever hearing this.
A complete joy to listen to. Added to my playlist. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
5/5. I was a little hesitant because Brit-pop can be quite annoying but truly amazing the genres they span on this album without missing a beat. The lengthy dance tracks, the catchy pop songs, the airy and ethereal ballads. It's hard to find a bad song on here, it all flows so evenly. Front to back perfect songs.
Brilliant. 10/10
cool
Class
Laying somewhere between the first British Invasion of the ‘60s and the Brit-pop takeover in the nineties lies this album. A gem from a band that wouldn’t see their obvious influences take shape. A band who’s 30 year old record still sounds fresh and great now. A stunning piece of 1980s British rock.
One of the best albums ever recorded, an instant 5-star rating. This is where the stars must have aligned and the various artists came together to produce an album full of back to back classics. This album will always remind me of working at Pizza Hut in the 1980s. Our treat on a Saturday close would be to put this album on as loud as the sound system could handle and clean up the store as we listened. Ideally we would be lying on our backs having a smoke for the last two tracks. This is truly almost an hour of perfection, stunning and timeless, an influential album that has stood the test of time and still sounds as fresh today as it did when it first came out. I hate to think how many hundreds of times I must have listened to this album, yet it still moves me to tears as it's just so bloody brilliant.
This is an album I've spent time listening to already and one that I really like. I kind of forgot how much I like this album until the relisten today. It's got a really unique vibe and doesn't just sit in one genre. It's one of my favorites from the Madchester bands. Standout Tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Waterfall, Don't Stop, (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister, Shoot You Down, I Am the Resurrection, Fools Gold

I'd never heard of this. Amazing!
This has no right being this catchy. This is everything britpop could only have dreamed of becoming and that's even before britpop was a thing. Just the right amount of post-punk, jangle pop and british rock, this thing is just perfect
This is totally the right era for me, but I'd never listened to it before. Or any Stone Roses really, other than what I'd have heard on Top of the Pops or what have you. Maybe it was the whole Madchester thing put me off. Maybe it was Bez. Or the hats. I don't know, but this is a really, really good album and I really enjoyed listening to it. I think by the end of the day I was on my seventh or eighth listen, which tells you everything about how much I enjoyed this. Really tight, with call backs to the 60s obviously, but there's lot of different stuff in here - I mean, there's some early Marillion (Grendel etc...) in places in there - and you can tell how influential it was to Britpop. Loved it. Straight to the saved list and I'll listen to this again for sure. I wish I'd listened to it when I was 19. But, then, you do stupid things at that age and I might have worn one of those hats.
Youth rises
This is really good. Feels like a progression of English rock from the 80's to 90's, even track by track within the record itself. There is a lot of variety: upbeat and rhythmic at times, and romantic at times ("Waterfall"), and builds toward an alt-rock sound by the end. Clean production without sounding overcooked. Gets a little weird/experimental and mostly instrumental toward the end.
I'm a little surprised by how much I love this, though I guess I shouldn't be considering the obvious mid-60s influence. The band is crazy tight: sometimes big and distorted, sometimes jangly and sweet, always working just right for the song. Even the two super-long jams don't feel excessive to me. Hate that it seems like they never put out anything else on the level of this, though I'll still seek out their other work to see for myself. Best song: She Bangs the Drums
Great late ‘80s rock. Still got that nice ‘80s vibe while giving a look towards the future music coming in the ‘90s.
shit goes hard. what can i say. i can listen to this any day of the week
Woah.
A perfect album. Great riffs, melodies and lyrics. The feeling it induces is like no other
One of the greats.. precursor to Britpop. Great guitar work by John Squire.
Another easy 5* for another album I've listened to hundreds of times already. In fact, I think I'd rate this the highest of everything so far. Higher than Rubber Soul, Unknown Pleasures and Velvet Underground & Nico (my other 5*s so far). When I meet albums like this I'm trying to listen to them anew. It's probably been decades since I really listening to this album rather than had it on in the background or sung along. And it's amazing in every way. I used to find the Stone Roses such an odd juxtaposition of frail, beautiful music and tough swagger. Now I've lived in Manchester for a couple of years, I don't find it odd at all. It's a horrible cliche to say it's the "Sound of Manchester" but it really is. That's what the city feels like: beautiful and gritty, peaceful and aggressive, a swirl of optimistic progressive politics and grimy industrial nostalgia. Perfection.
Wonderful album
Superbonito.
5. loved it. Will listen again and need to buy asap!
Every generation has its cutting edge album. I don't get the Ramones, I think they all sound the same. I guess it helps if you're 17 when these albums come along. This is one such album and I get it. Iconic and game changing, influenced a generation, to me it's varied and ingenious. Easy 5 stars.

gud
Quality from start to finish.
Would listen again
I´ve have these big guy. A classic. Needless to review.
How do you manage to make an album where nearly every song is a banger, and the only ones that aren't serve as interludes that don't feel useless? It's a master craft in the Madchester movement that could hardly be associated with it considering how little house music is on here. The only obvious house-like part is the very last few minutes. During my 2nd acid trip, I loved this album so much that after I listened to it the first time, I watched all the music videos then proceeded to listen to it again. I've since revisited this record at least two dozen times in the past year. It's a neo-psychedelia masterpiece, with a very hazy production and evoking 60s energy in its cheery mood to sing and dance to. Super groovy melodies with a typical 80s drum machine and deep prominent bass lines. It features both a 60s-style jangly guitar and a 70s-style distorted guitar interlaying each other to evoke all sorts of emotions, from nostalgia and joy to power and determination. Both guitars (along with the double tracked vocals) are layered with chorus and reverb to produce very ethereal effects, complimenting the spacey synths, hazy production, and surreal lyrics. But they also have their intense, impressive, and entrancing solos. The sound is everything I love about gothic rock but much brighter and a 60s spirit. "I Wanna Be Adored" is a fantastic opener. A crazy buildup with minimalist lyrics, it's a dance anthem of '89 and excites audiences for what's to come. From there on, it's hit after hit, but many songs serve as nice breaks. "Don't Stop" for example is a fun 5-minute interlude of "Waterfall" slowed down and played backwards. A weird yet fun take. "Elizabeth My Dear" is an ode to "Scarborough Fair" (I think). Tons of memorable moments. "Waterfall" and "Made of Stone" are two songs that explode in chaos at the end to satisfying conclusions. "Bye Bye Bad Man" is my vote for the catchiest song and has a bridge that transitions from slow and nostalgic to fast and energetic with a determined vocalist. My personal favorite is the jammy "Shoot You Down", my candidate for the most psychedelic song on the album, with an optimistic mood and jazzy guitar solos. When I hear "This is the One", I know we're coming close to the end. Super anthemic with quiet and loud moments, it sounds like an ending theme to some movie soundtrack. But we end with two really long tracks. "I Am the Resurrection" is a final cheery catchy track that has one of my favorite choruses in the album then devolves into 5 minutes of a jam improvisation. And finally, "Fools Gold" is a chill groovy ending that gets gradually wilder, featuring an awesome house ending with cool percussion solo, funky guitars, and house synth effects. With how long these last 3 tracks are, I feel pretty satisfied by the ending.

One of my favourite albums of all time!
PREFS : I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Waterfall, Bye Bye Badman, (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister, Made of Stone, This Is the One, I Am the Ressurection MOINS PREF : Don't Stop
The madchester album you need to listen to before you die, absolute masterpiece.
when you're competing with Appetite for Destruction and Love by Cult, you better have a compelling proposition. Such a great album.
Love the music on this album. It’s almost a precursor to Britpop. A shame that they never made much more music, but this is still great.
This album is perfect.
Yeah this is just a brilliant album (except for don’t stop which is utterly pointless b side material that should’ve been replaced with elephant stone). Still great though 5/5.
I've had this album on repeat for about a year now so I was pretty excited to relisten top to bottom, but it was hard to come in with fresh, unbiased ears. Whether I did or not, this gets a 5. From the beginning with I Wanna Be Adored and She Bangs the Drums all the way through to Made of Stone and I Am the Resurrection, the Stone Roses massaged my ears for an hour. Shoot You Down is one of my favorite songs of all time and definitely my favorite on the album. It might not be on the same level as other 5s (Sgt. Pepper and Ziggy first come to mind) but I enjoy it just as much. Something about it just lands perfectly every time.
Faultless. Every single song is glory. It's bursting with glory - they even have to release bangers like Sally Cinnamon and Mersey Paradise separately because there's too much glory for one record here. Listened to this on repeat when I first discovered it in around 2011 - the only downside is that I can't go back and hear it again for the first time. Fools gold continues to be one of the more odd songs going, but it works. Remember hearing it for the first time in 2004 cruising around San Andreas with Big Smoke. Favourites: She Bangs the Drums, Waterfall, Sugar Spun Sister, Made of Stone, I am the Resurrection, Fools Gold, I Wanna Be Adored FIVE ESTRELLAS
Bye bye bad albums, this really is the one, an absolute classic. Even after 14 gazillion listens it still pops. Song for song has to be one of the heaviest hitting albums out there, I still think don't stop is awful, but aside from that it's pure (fool's) gold.
Does a man from the north of England need an excuse to give this album 5 stars? SoT All 5/5
Fantastic Record. Love it to bits.
I'd heard this album a few times growing up, but finally 'got it' when I was 22. Then I listened to it daily for about 6 months and totally ruined any future listening experience of it for myself. It's been years now and already after one listen I could easily avoid it for another decade. One of the best debuts of all time, an easy 5*, just wish I didn't rinse it and could still enjoy it.
One of my favorites
While I am fully aware of this band, and I have heard their songs in the past, I'm ashamed I haven't listened to this album before now. This album is superb.
Definitely hear the sounds that influenced Oasis and others
Grew up loving this. Shine has faded over time but there are still some bangers on there and i'm finding it hard to listen to objectively!
Still 100%
Uno de mis albumes favoritos de la vida.
i had never heard of this band before but this album was super good!! will definitely be listening to some of the songs a lot more
Beautiful, flowing classic rock... like a waterfall.
This album really does set the stage of the great brit pop records of the 90s
Amazing. Still as good as the first time I listened to it. This is rock music.
One of my favourite albums of all time. I am the resurrection is a classic. Superb.
One of the greatest debut albums ever released. My musical soul soars every time I play it.
I LOVE THISSSSSSS
секси спасибо за детство легенды
I love love love deze
It was good to listen to this again, two decades after it once had heavy rotation on my CD player. Whilst my preferences have moved on to an extent, it remains an undisputed quality album. The Stone Roses were never able to get close to their debut album's genius again, and arguably this was also both the start and the peak of 'Madchester' and Britpop. Rating: 5/5 Playlist track: I Am the Resurrection Date listened: 01/12/22
Et av mine favorittalbum! 10/10
Brilliant, classic, hear its influences all over the place. I was a bit surprised how may of the songs I knew, but they released SIX singles, and one of the other songs is one of the singles backwards! Really enjoyed it, but now frustrated they didn't kick on from here. 5 🌟
Stand-outs: "I Wanna Be Adored," "She Bangs the Drums," "Elizabeth My Dear," "This Is the One," "I Am the Resurrection"
I’m really glad this album was recommended! I really liked it. It was almost like Pink Floyd + The Beatles + late 70s Rolling Stones. Some of the songs made it onto my personal playlist, and Id happily listen to the whole album again! I’m sad I didn’t discover this hidden gem on an album earlier!
Amazing. Some albums hit at just the right time.
Really nice. Captures so much of what is good about 80s/90s alt/indie rock, without any of the bits that I don't like so much. Reminded me of The La's
I wanna be adooorrrreed
Fantastic. Loved how chill it is.
I knew the popular songs well but the rest of the album was very solid, it will be entering my rotation
One of my favorite albums!
Classic, the nostalgia gifts the 5 stars
So glad.this came up. I nevver get tired of this album. The stone roses pretty much defined the sounds of the 90s, and lead the way for the 'brit pop' (hate that word) movement. This album opened the flood gates so everyone else could follow. Psychedelic funky rock. Unique sound with attitude. Just brilliance
I love the Roses so much. There’s not a single second of this record that I don’t adore.
Nice
For first album and for british rock, this is something blow my mind.
Yet another band I’d been meaning to listen to for years but just hadn’t. Love this.
What can I say that has been said about the absolute piece of art? I legitimately think this is the best British rock album ever. And I say this as a fan of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. I hadn’t heard this album in full in a few years. I think I had listened to it in passing at the start of the pandemic. The thing that I forgot about it is how pretty much every song has some sort of change in direction that elevates them from pretty good to just amazing. Like in Shoot You Down the pause and then key change for the ‘I never wanted …the live that you gave me’ part. It’s such and amazing surprise after thinking I knew how this whole album goes and then realizing they still have more to show. You can say the Stone Roses legacy is tarnished because they never reached this height again, but neither has anyone else.
good
Back in 1989-90, this was my favorite record. I was introduced to it by my sister, who is 3 years younger than me. I still love it. It's perfect. John Squire's guitar work is impeccable.
work of art very very consistently excellent soundtrack, only a few skippable songs (don't stop, elizabeth....) really like this, but i'm biased bc this isn't my first listen, or even my 10th GREAT STUFF
By far the best UK album from 1989. The year after Some Friendly got out but I still rate the SR album higher.
Incredibly pleasant to listen to. The flow and consistency of the album is just perfect.
A classic
J’avais entendu de nom mais je ne m’imaginais oas que je reecouterais 2-3 fois l’album en iune journee de peur d’avoir passer a cote de quelque chose. 5
One dodgy song on there though
Nice jam album, east to listen to. I would listen to them again. Nice guitars. Second listen was much better. I am a fan
absolute classic
I deeply love madchester
best
6/5 club. Complete perfection. The 6 standout tracks are just fucking unbelievably good.
Squire and Brown's opus
She Bangs The Drum is probably the best song in the world! Great album.
This was about my 3rd listen overall to this album and it gets better every time. All the songs are great and I was disappointed when it was over.
Great album
Meistarastykki. Hvert lag öðru betra, og fáir jafn góðir bangerar með jafn niðurdrepandi texta og I am the resurrection, það er eiginlega best.
I really enjoyed this album. I wanna be adored is the highlight for me (and is also the only one I knew beforehand). This is going in the rotation! Is it a 5? Sure, let's be nice.
One all time favourite - tunes start to finish !
that was actually surprisingly enjoyable I’ve been getting a lot of this 90s britpop but it hasn’t yet been bad 9/10
Massive formative part of my life was spent listening to this album. if you took don't stop off then this would be very close to perfection for me. i wonder what the yanks think of the whole baggy manc thing?
As a very famous 90s footballer, I know this record incredibly well. The boys in the dressing room would always stick this on after a big win and suck eachother off. Those days when the entire Chelsea first team and backroom staff would jizz all over me were some of the best times ever.
I have loved this album since it first came out. Every time I listen to it I can't believe how good it is. The best!
Is it one of the best debut albums of all time? It's up there.
Classic 5 out of 5
Some of the best songs ever written. A couple of duds though still what a banger.
One of the best albums ever, still a relevant soundtrack to my life
Solid gold banger.
Nostalgia strikes again! I was a bit too young when it was first released, it wasn't until the mid/late-90s when the rock nightclub in Liverpool, the Krazy House, used to always play I Am The Resurrection for their penultimate song. I picked up a copy of the album and it became a regular listen.
This one my top five albums, one of the easiest five star reviews ever. Everthing they wrote and recorded around 88-91 are just magic.
Superbonito
❤️
Uuh, paluu ikisuosikkien pariin.
"I don't need to sell my soul; he's already in me" is one of the great rock lyrics of all time. 5 stars for that line alone.
Having never heard of this band before, I am completely blown away. I loved every song on the album and this is the first time that I can remember tapping my foot to any album yet (7/26/25); between the varied styles, the lyrics, the presentation, it all kept me guessing and I couldn't get enough. That's the thing that really got me, they never stuck to a genre really, but their style stayed the same. You know it's their music but are pleasantly surprised with the direction. Stellar album, really makes me happy that I decided to do this list. Favorite songs: I Wanna Be Adored She Bangs the Drums Waterfall Elizabeth My Dear Fools Gold
As I think back to the summer of 2012, I believe that it would have been utterly bleak if it weren't for this album. I don't remember much from this period of time but, what I do remember, this was the soundtrack. A path down the rabbit hole ensued with this band (I never ventured into the third album) and they are forever engrained, in my mind, in these sublime sounds they created. Thank you Stone Roses, you are adored indeed.
Loved it, some really great songs
Great Debut album! Never explored this band before, but this album is an amazing gem.
Debut album is very good!
10/10
MADCHESTER. BIBLICAL.
Classic and excellent
5 estrellas ***** totales. I wanna be adored, She bangs the drums, Waterfall, Don't Stop, Sugar spoon sister, Made of stone, Shoot you down, This is the one y I am the resurrection.
A solid album through and through. Dig a lot of the songs, especially I Am The Resurrection.
This will always be one of my favorite albums ever. It's certainly their high point as a band. Song For My Sugar Spun Sister, Fool's Gold and especially I Am The Resurrection are the highlights.
Oh yesssss, my kind of music. So Moody. Makes me feel alive.
Britpop perfection. One of the best albums of the 80s. 9-10/10 1. Fools Gold 2. I Wanna Be Adored 3. Made of Stone
The most formative album of the Madchester scene. I wore out my tape and had to buy an album!
Fantastic
One of the best debut albums ever, I didn't like it at all when I first played it. A masterpiece...5/5
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a fantastic album this is. My favorite from this Madchwster scene. So melodic and soulful. One great song after another and my vinyl copy doesn't even have Fools Gold. 5 🌟
Adored.
One of the greatest debut albums of all time. It’s influence spanned far and wide and it barely has a weak moment - an easy five stars
Very good
Great suprise here, the album is full of catchy songs with lots of harmonies, my guilty pleasure. Interesting sound also for late 80s, prog and psychodelic rock paired with some 80s dance influence
Rock, Alternative/Indie, Pop 1989
Shame he's an absolute whopper
Otro clásico.
Me gustó mucho. Favs: Don´t Stop, Made of Stone y I wanna be adored. Mood: I don't need to sell my soul.
Some of it gets a bit wanky, especially the backwards parts but it doesn't really detract from the high points
5/5 - fantastic album! Great surprise
Never heard of these guys before but was a solid album, good guitars, chill music with some oomph. Another review compared to Oasis before there was Oasis and I could see where they're getting that. Dig this, will be adding some of their tunes to my playlist.
Masterpiece!
One of the best
Dear god, the shimmery chorus pedal… inject that directly into my eardrums. Cranberries-esque. I love it. Vocal melodies and harmonies are great. I bet the Uninvited guys love this album. There’s a clear influence there. “Elizabeth, my dear” - cheeky “Scarborough Fair” parody. But she’s still queen, you poor bastards! 32 years later! First time I have rolled it back for a second listen. That’s probably a good sign, lol
Great album. Feels like the missing link between The Beatles and Oasis. 'She Bangs the Drums' is a banger.
this is really great.
