Reviews (page 7 of 14)
Great album! Nice mix of 80s rock sound with some psychedelic influence, with emerging 90s rock sound. Waterfall was a good tune, will listen them again.
Charming and endlessly infectious. Combining elements of shoegaze, jangle-pop, and 60's psych rock and folk ("Fool's Gold" features honest-to-god dance beats), it's not a far-fetched notion that this is the album that informed 90's alternative rock (particularly slow-/sad-core), pop music, and to some extent, foretold the coming of Jungle/DnB as well. Despite being fairly laid-back, the songs are imbued with a palpable optimism that brings a smile to my face.
Альбом подкупает культовым статусом и музыкальным разнообразием. Мне не хватает на нем цельности, кажется, что материал не ровный. Всё можно простить за I Am The Resurrection.
Very psychedelic meets sad like the cure meets babe rain orange
Always good to come back to this one!
This is a vibe I like. Not sure I had any new favorite songs from it but enjoyed
I don't care where you've been or what you plan to dooooo
Practically perfect. Favorite: She Bangs the Drum Would I listen to it again: Yes
I am feeling generous, there is something about this album that makes me think of 60’s Beatles type music. It does sound similar at times but they have a nice sound.
Solid from top to bottom a bit of a surprise to me
If there's a patient zero for SO MUCH of what British rock became in the 1990s it would this album, it sounds like all the things that were going on sound wise, a little bit of madchester and baggy, a little bit of jangle pop, a little bit of shoegaze, yet it synthesizes all these things in such a unique way. And all these things sort of coming together sound like basically what britpop would be like later on, so obviously I really enjoy this, it's so carefree in a way that feels straight out of a mid 90s movie. Really recommended if you like that era of rock.
Saving this one to revisit, I liked it
The seminal and eponymous album by Madchester scene's The Stone Roses, it carries their most famous and misunderstood song I Wanna Be Adored. I can't tell you how many people I know thought it was I Wanna Be a Dog... It's still a great, and clearly their most enduring song. That may have been affected by their not having another album out for five years, that being their last album. That album didn't really do much even on the Alt Rock stations of the time. That said, THIS album is amazing. Full of great pop hooks, overlayed with droning guitar noise, and great solos. There are also so many great songs. The second song on the album, She Bangs the Drum, was a college radio hit back in the late 80s and is nothing like I Wanna Be Adored - it's a great pop song, more New Wave than Dream Pop or Shoegaze. And so goes the rest of the album. They may have been a flash in the pan but it was a bright flash.
This is very good. There are a couple filler songs but the rest are great.
This could have come out in 2010 and fit right in with the indie movement. Wild how music can be ahead of its time. This is shoegaze, spacey rock with fantastic arpeggios and vocals reverbed to the max. While the music can get a bit lost in the sound at points, the highs are high. The guitar rips. Hard to compare this to something, but easy to hear similarities in the greats of the genre.
⭐⭐⭐⭐– 4[.3] of 5 stars I had already loved "Made Of Stone" before listening to this album in full, and was hoping that the full album would be just as good, and man, THIS DID NEOT DISAPPOINT (i also ended up listening to it twice lol). I absolutely love all the guitar work and use of instruments on this album (i might even go ahead and learn some of these songs). Just powerful and good-feeling songs from start to finish, 12 bangers back to back (except for maybe BBBM, that one didn't rly do much for me tbh), amazing melodies, what more can I say? Not to mention, the influence this album this album has had, basically allowing brit pop to exist in bands such as Oasis and Blur and (even early Radiohead!) just makes this already good album that much better. ALSO HOLY SHITE THOSE LAST TWO 8+ MINUTE SONGS WERE F-ING AMAZING (definitely two favs right there!). Favourites: Made of Stone, I Am the Resurrection⭐, Fools Gold, Waterfall/Don't Stop, This Is The One. Dislikes: Bye Bye Bad Man
rating - 4/5. (its actually a 3.8/5 but I'll round) > this album is cute! I like their sound. some songs are very "perks of being a wallflower". don't stop is a weird sounding song with weird lyrics it sounds backwards LOL. sugar spun sister instruments r so nice. made of stone lyrics r cool. I am the resurrection's crazy switch up halfway through was actually heat. why is fools gold 9 mins long tho bye. kinda getting inxs vibes from the instrum on it tho. > thumbs up: I wanna be adored, she bangs the drums, waterfall, I am the resurrection (solely for the sick instrumentals?? hello? who is on the guitar) you win this time, british people.... (also I just realized how bad at reviews I am pls don't come for me.)
Again needs to be in my rotation more. Excellent and baffling that they dropped off the planet after
Blind album and artist. Thoroughly impressed honestly. I love the tonality softness but the impact it carries on the beats and melodies. Brilliant.
Can’t believe they named their band after the bar in Leeds! This takes me back to being 14, being depressed in my room and hearing I wanna be adored for the first time and thinking wow maybe life isn’t so bad Shame Ian brown just does karaoke of his own songs on stage now and hates vaccines Favs: I wanna be adored She bangs the drum Waterfall Bye bye bad man Songs for my sugar spun sister Made of stone Shoot you down I am the resurrection Fools gold
I am the resurrection ✨️
aquele rock alegre e leve, algumas músicas lembram um pouco Oasis; agradável de ouvir; a última música (fools gold) é muito familiar, acho que teve algum dos primeiros Fifa
I’ve worn it out!
the citizen kane of britpop
Some good stuff, need to listen to more.
Great flow. Would listen again.
Vilken överraskning. Riktigt bra skiva. Lyssnat en hel del och känner definitivt att detta kan man lyssna mer på. Alltid roligt när det händer!
Pretty good. Not sure I would seek it out.
This is already a favourite, my older brother used to play this when I was growing up. Wasn’t into music as much as I am now back then so it didn’t initially grab me, he would play it all the time I eventually learned to love perhaps by force. Anyway I revisited it some years later when my love for music grew, it’s a brilliant debut album. Not many albums where every song is brilliant, barring 1 song I’m not overly keen on it’s pure ear candy.
Lovely positive early 90s rock.
This was a new discovery/listen for me, so that's exciting. I'm surprised I've never heard of The Stone Roses before, as a lot of the indie music I was in to in the early 2000s sounds like they took inspiration from them - bands like The Shins, Animal Collective, come to mind. I'm also surprised this came out in 1989, because I can also hear heavy influence from late 60s/70s rock'n'roll. At times trippy, not too heavy, with some euphoric vocals.
Damn, I forgot how good The Stone Roses are. This album in particular should/needs to be in my collection. The self-titled debut still feels fresh today and perfectly blends psychedelic rock and 80s dance. What a perfect intro on "I Wanna Be Adored". And the nearly 10-min jam sessions on "I Am the Resurrection" and "Fools Gold" both feel anthemic and groooooovy. One can really tell how endlessly influential this record was. 4.5 stars!
Having spent a sizable chunk of my life in the UK, The Stone Roses were always part of the cultural backdrop. I’ve spent enough time in beer-stained student bars and grimy 80s-themed clubs to recognize their biggest hits—many of which, as it turns out, come from this album. The air was thick with stale booze, the sticky floors clung to your shoes, and the bathrooms were usually a bit of a disaster. Cheap fluorescent shots fueled the drunken masses, stumbling over each other as "I Wanna Be Adored" blared—a moment of magic amidst the chaos. The Stone Roses (1989) was hailed as a defining album of British rock, capturing the confidence, youth, and innovation of the Madchester scene. It fused jangly, 60s-inspired guitar tones with "danceable" rhythms, creating a sound that tried to bridge the gap between indie rock and the rave culture of the late '80s and early '90s. At its best, the album is utterly infectious. Tracks like the opener, "I Wanna Be Adored," boast a hypnotic bassline and shimmering guitar work by John Squire. His intricate, effects-laden solos offer expansiveness while maintaining precision. The album thrives on the tension between confidence and introspection. "She Bangs the Drums" delivers infectious energy with its jangly rhythm, while "Made of Stone" brings brooding intensity. The groove-heavy "Fools Gold" still sounds ahead of its time, melding funk and rock in a way few bands have since. Lyrically, the album explores themes of self-identity and youthful rebellion. Ian Brown’s cryptic, often enigmatic delivery complements the music's expansive soundscapes. The lyrics aren’t always clear, but they feel universal—capturing the spirit of a generation searching for meaning in a world that feels just out of reach. The band’s confidence—bordering on arrogance—became part of their mystique, later adopted by the Gallagher brothers. Their influence stretched beyond their own time, impacting Britpop acts like Blur and Pulp, though their style was more psychedelic than the polished swagger of Britpop’s mid-90s. However, The Stone Roses isn’t without its flaws. Ian Brown’s vocal limitations are hard to ignore, particularly on the weaker tracks. His delivery, while distinctive, lacks the range to fully carry some of the more intricate moments. While The Stone Roses remains an iconic part of British music, it wouldn't make my personal list. The album’s historical importance is undeniable, but it’s not a sound I find myself returning to often. Perhaps it’s because the album’s mood is tied to a time and place I never fully experienced, or maybe it’s the band's swagger that doesn’t resonate with me as much as it did with others. Furthermore, I’ve often questioned whether the band's output justifies their exalted reputation. With only two studio albums in their heyday, their legacy rests almost entirely on this debut. Still, I found myself enjoying it more than I expected. Listening to it brings me back to those hazy student nights, reminding me of my own youthful exuberance over a decade after its release. In that sense, music has the power to transport us back in time. Did/Do I own this release? No. Does this release belong on the list? Yes. Its consistency and significant influence on Britpop and indie music make it a worthy contender. Would this release make my personal list? Not for me. Will I be listening to it again? Sure, why not occasionally.
felt like hippie rock from the 80s, didn't listen to the last song because it was so long.
4.86⭐️
Banger, I like Sugar Spun Sister and Bye Bye Bad Man the most. The guitar and vocals are ethereal to experience. I wanna be adored opens the album really well
Waterfall is goated
Really cool album. I really like the sound of the guitar and the general vibes
Enjoyed this. Loved the general vibe but dragged on a bit. Still gets a high 4 stars
The Stone Roses is one of those band names I've seen before, but can't remember if I've heard them before. Looking at the track listing, Fool's Gold rings a bell. I think it's pretty cool, but it's not on the original track listing. Great album even without Fool's Gold though. I think I like their bass best.
These guys were definitely an inspiration to Oasis. If I didn't know better, I'd have said this WAS Oasis. If you like Oasis, you will like this. Fortunately for me, I like Oasis.
Starts and ends strong but there's just something about the middle where it got a bit drawn out and Meh. After 3 songs i was like certified banger solid 5 but yeh it dropped off and then picked back up. High 4.
Pretty chill
It's definitely a time warp back to the late 80s. That said, it doesn't sound dated, like a lot of older music can, definitely has a timelessness about it. You can hear their influences, and can hear the influence they've had on other bands. My favourite track felt like it belonged on a different album, but I won't complain. Overall a very enjoyable listen, and one I wouldn't mind listening to again.
The words that come to mind when I try to describe this album is "Teenage Freedom". For whatever reason when I hear this music, I picture a teenager from the 80s not having any worries and just wandering about. I enjoyed it. Definitely no skippable tracks on here. I'm just surprised that this is #11 on the top 1001 albums. I'm not blown away by it where it deserves to be just outside the top 10 albums of all time. It was just a good, consistent listen all the way through. It's one of those albums that you can put on pretty much any time and listen to it cover to cover. I'll save it for future feel-good listens. 4/5
Favourites: I Wanna Be Adored; She Bangs The Drums; (Song For My) Sugar Spun Sister; Made Of Stone
point0.
oh my god this is so good like genuinely every song has me so gagged. like fool’s gold, this is the one & waterfall are probably my favs right now but like i can’t even choose i’ve got nearly the whole album liked. way too good yummu
Very Chill -- good album to put on in the background.
Solid rock album, man.
Great rock album. I’ve slept on The Stone Roses, probably because they’re Adam Eget’s fave band
Good stuff
The sound of a feeling of an era. I like this way more than I thought I would, and way more than any other lauded BritPop
The songs are all phenomenal but I've decided I don't like Ian Brown's voice a great deal and it ruins some of the songs on here, others though it passes and I don't mind it. I'd go 3.5 in all honesty but because we don't have that luxury I'll round to a 4 because some of the songs are good.
I really really enjoyed this album.
Fav: I Am The Resurrection Least Fav: Don’t Stop It’s a real shame they only made one album and nothing more
Great album! Reminded me of some of the stuff I listen to like Radiohead and more Radiohead.
Really liked this!
Been forever since I listened to it but was excellent and clear how it inspired so many other bands
For a band I knew nothing about, I really really liked this. At times it reminded me of a 90s alt rock play on 60s psychedelic rock.good listen and pretty engaging the entire time
Really liked this album! Very reminiscent of Oasis and that age of alternative which is kind of hit or miss for me
Very good!!!
Really enjoyed this one. Good variation, good sounds. Really built as the album went on.
I think this is prob the album I have enjoyed the most so far, from the one I didn't know anything about. Almost a 5!
The first song was my favorite
Really cool álbum. Some great songs, great playing. One eye into the psychadelic brit-rock of the 60’s/70’s, the other one into the alternative rock that would come during the 90’s
The first few songs weren’t my taste and the last few songs were long but overall this was a good album
I didn't like "I Wanna Be Adored" that much. But the rest of the album is pure gold. Many of the songs are cool and timeless. "Waterfall" is best one of the lot. Looks like this week is a good week so far. 4 stars for "Self Titled".
cozy album. Two last songs are bangers
Really glad this popped up. Never heard of them or madchester - good stuff
Another banger, unironically better than the Beatles.
Great dreamy rock album. Some songs are a bit forgetable but others are insanely catchy. Overall really really good. Added to my library!
I liked this album. It can feel a tad repetitive at times but it has a lot of soul to it. Overall I think I’d give it a mid four, although some of the tracks are really good.
Fun. I’ve never been to Hell‘s kitchen in New York City in the 80s, but if I did, this is the music they would listen to. And I base that on absolutely nothing.
I really enjoyed this one! Had never heard of this band before, but was glad to have found them. Great up-beat rock sound.
Great album. I liked the janglier bits of the album with Bye Bye Bad Man. Opening and closing songs are perfect I think. I Wanna Be Adored especially so.
This has an ethereal sound to it. Each track is different while still sounding cohesive to the others. I absolutely love "Fools Gold" and "I Wanna Be Adored". The rest was a really good listen. A great first album.
Embarrassingly, I hadn't given this album a proper listen and only really knew "I want to be adored". The influence of this album on Brit Pop, though, is so clear. I hear Oasis, Pulp, Belle and Sebastian, Blur. This album is the British version of The Replacements "Let it be" -- jangly, poppy, dancy, serious all at once. I love it.
Teenage me gives this 5* no questions asked. Adult me has gone off soft lad rock (that often doesn't rock) a lot so was expecting to go 3*. Teenage me was closer to winning out. The album has a couple of duds and a couple of overrated tracks but Adored is a great opener, Resurrection delivers on the groove that fool's gold promised as a single and made of stone achieves the rare feat of rocking and having groove. It's a pity that lad rock won out over the funkier rock of fool's gold and the Mondays, paving the way for shite like Shed Seven and Kaiser Chiefs, but it won because this is a fantastic album.
I enjoyed this! 4.
Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
Pleasantly surprised by how well this turned out. I enjoyed it. They blended genres fairly seamlessly. Nothing too offensive. It’s a good one. Unique and original. I’d certainly listen again. 4/5
I like this album because, unlike many others on this list, the band has talent. Musicianship is emphasized on every track. The vocalist can actually sing, which puts him in the minority of the last hundred or so albums I’ve listened to. The guitar player and rhythm section are tight. Bass player is excellent. There is abundant creativity throughout. It exemplifies why I am on this journey - to discover great music that never made it to my local radio station. added to my favorites.
New one for me. I liked it and would listen again. 4/5
Lovely album. I've heard it many times before but it's always a pleasure. I Wanna Be Adored is one of my all-time favorite songs. The lengthy last two songs are also excellent.
gotta love good 80s rock
A surprising hit! Quite a few good tracks, especially the last two, I Am The Resurrection and Fool's Gold.
Worked very well for me as an energetic background track.
I really really liked this album. It was a lot of fun. I think I'd need to be in a certain mood to turn this album on but I will definitely be returning to this. The guitar parts were great and it was just a good time. I think the last two songs, while long, were a fun jam. This album gave me major R.E.M. vibes. Prob more of a 3.75 Liked Songs: Everything except for "Don't Stop" and "Elizabeth My Dear." I LOVED "She Bangs the Drums" tho
liked songs: She Bangs the Drums, Bye Bye Bad Man, Made of Stone, I Am the Resurrection This was a good album 3.5
Quite like it. Especialy the instrumentation. Can't quite put it to words.
My dad likes this one a lot, and I do too :)
7/10 Favourite songs: I Wanna Be Adored, (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister
Enjoyed this a good bit more than I thought I would. British rock from the '80s is a hard sell at this point, but some great melodies and textures all over this. Pleasantly surprised, great album. Favorite tracks: She Bangs the Drum, Waterfall, Don't Stop, Elizabeth My Dear, Shoot You Down. Album art: Can hardly tell what I'm looking at, you've got red white and blue stripes (France?) and some lemon slices on a Pollock painting or something. It's pretty cool but not that exciting. 4/5
What a pleasant listen 🎶 Really enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. A classic of the British alternative scene
Such impressive first three songs it's a great opener. Really laid back, reminds me off summer holidays when I was really young. It does sort of tail off with don't stop which is just a worse version of waterfall, weird folk ballad style rambles and consistent use of sparkly long chords. It really brings it at the end with fools gold -which might be my favourite.
When it's stuck on one of the more tedious dreamy songs. it is a pretty cruisey and easy listen. When it strays from this it goes pretty hard. That might sound a bit negative but I wouldn't say I disliked the less interesting tracks, I just found them to be an adequate sideshow to the songs on here that I actually liked. Highlights: I Am the Resurrection, Made of Stone, Fools Gold
tight yet dreamy indie bedroom psychedelic grooves. a lot of these songs blended together, but I was bobbing my head to a lot of it 3.5/5
MADCHESTER! I like pretty much every song on here, from the deepcuts to the big hits. Every track is a joy and there's no real filler here. However, while I like the tracks, I don't quite love them like I do with other albums.
A classic that defined the Madchester sound going into the 90s. Only loses a star as there's some filler in between the bangers
Nice
Ok, I liked this more than I expected. I don't think it's the best album in the UK ever, but it's a damn fine album. Little mopey (ala the Smiths), little jangly (ala early REM), a bit rocking too (bet Noel/Liam saw SR a few times...). I've always enjoyed "I Wanna Be Adored" (as an aside, why don't more bands use that song to walk out on stage to? too meta?) What I didn't remember was how good, "I Am The Resurrection" was. Great song and then they break into a jammy sequence at 3:50 or so? Good stuff. "Fools Gold" stood out too - felt like it would have fit on an Ocean's 11/12/13 movie soundtrack really well. My biggest complaint is that "Don't Stop" should have been either left off the album or sequenced as the final song. It just kills the momentum that's built up before that. Madchester, innit?
i was suprised howbwell this album aged and hiw much i enjoyed it
Great album - love Britpop
not bad at all, would listen again
Originele sound, mooie brug tussen ‘80 en ‘90. Hoor inspiratie voor latere bands, en heel veel andere invloeden.
Lovely little album. Nice and chill. 'Waterfall' was my fave here.
ive been listening to The Stone Roses' self-titled for years, and every single time i listen to it, the exact same thing happens: its got me hooked for the first couple tracks, then gradually fades me out until i snap back in for the last two songs. pleasant, but not a core part of my personality. i get that it's influential, and despite sounding nothing like its contemporaries basically put "baggy" as a genre on the map, but really it's more useful as a touchstone of british music of the era than it is an undeniable classic that cracks 4.00 on RateYourMusic dot com. there are two types of museums -- art and history. the stone roses sought to build the former, but 35 years on, they've ended up with the latter. there's nothing wrong with history, but i know what i'll pick if ever given the choice between the two.
very enjoyable, cohesive (apart from the last track), each song has its own charm
Still as amazing and funky as it was when I first heard it at 17.
I listen regularly to "I Wanna Be Adored" as it's on my favorite play list, so this as a nice opportunity to hear the rest of the album.
It's nice to be reintroduced to the Stone Roses, I remember liking them back in the 90's but haven't heard them since They have their own sound but each song is different enough to maintain interest. Dreamy rock.
Interestingly, their most famous song (Love Spreads) is from a later era, but there's a lot to like about this album. It has an echo-y aspect to it: I don't know if that was a recording technique or the way their instrument's were setup, but I'll bet it worked really well for live shows.
Приятный рок, предтеча альтернативного рока и рок музыки 90-ых в целом. То, что такой альбом записали в 1989 году, сильно удивляет.
Some good tracks on here, lots of well known songs considering it's the debut. No really weak tracks on here.
it's ok
Finally tidied my room to this
Solid
(ALREADY LISTENED) i wanna be adored: 4/5 she bangs the drums: 4.5/5 waterfall: 5/5 don’t stop: 2.5/5 bye bye bad man: 3.5/5 elizabeth my dear: 3/5 (song for my) sugar spun sister: 3.5/5 made of stone: 5/5 this is the one: 3.5/5 i am the resurrection: 4.5/5 (bonus) fool’s gold: 4/5 beautiful album, very mellow and quiet but still an enjoyable listen
-I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. there’s a lot of variety and uniqueness especially in the last track which is amazing. I really wanna listen to this again, I feel like there’s something new to discover in the songs every time I listen to them -Favorites are Waterfall, Made Of Stone, and Fools Gold
It’s mostly a case of hate the band, not the music here. They seem like a bunch of posturing twats, the very worst of “madchester” and yet this album is a joy to listen to. If I recall, John Leckie produced it. That probably is the reason
Not my favorite, but wouldn’t mind listening to these songs again if they ever come up in the wild!
i liked the chill sound and a cool addition to the british rock albums i've listened to fav: waterfall
i enjoyed this a lot more than i thought i would! there was a lot of cool ambience throughout the record, the tone had a warble to it that i really enjoyed, and the percussion was always driving while still fitting the loose and dreamy mood of the album. really enjoyed.
Going into this I really thought stone roses were a britpop band similar to oasis or something. But I was very much proven wrong. The album is an amazing fusion of sixties pop and eighties jangle pop with shoegaze and britpop - genres that would become a lot bigger in the 90s. The percussion on some songs is so amazing, and that extended outro to I am the resurrection is sick. The album starts and ends really strong but sags a bit in the middle.
Just a seriously good vibe
Not bad at all
Decent
Enjoyed front to back
I was only familiar with "Fool's Gold", because of GTA San Andreas and wished, that more songs would be in that direction. But solid album nonetheless!
not a band i often enjoy hearing on the radio and such but listening to this album alone it's pretty good. song for my sugar spin sister is very good as is this is the one
So much to like about this, also some quite dull filler in the first half
I listened to this 5-6 times right through. I enjoyed it more with each listen. The hits are really good, but the rest of the tracks are a bit jangly. I know that it is a pivotal Manchester genre album, and based on that, I'm happy to give it a solid 3.5 and round it up for the track 'Fools Gold'.
I wanna be adored
I really enjoyed this album I also know that I'll probably never listen to it again. Nothing really stands out. 8/10 Forgettable excellence
Like The Smiths, but not as good - in other words, still pretty good. 3.5 rounded up.
One Hell of a record
classic, obviously 4.4
4.5 How appropriate, on the long-awaited day that the Gallagher brothers put aside their differences in the name of reunion $ to get Oasis back together, we’re given probably the second-best Britpop band that the country has ever offered us. Granted, I know these guys are pretty infamous for their so-called sophomore slump follow-up, but I think they still deserve that title based on this album alone. This is actually an album I’ve been familiar with for some time now and even owned a copy of on CD back in high school, and to this day, I Wanna Be Adored and She Bangs the Drums are two of my favorite songs of all-time. Of course, there are plenty of other great songs here as well, with Waterfall, Made of Stone, and Elephant Stone being three other favorites as well - though, the latter didn’t seem to be included on the version of the album that’s on Spotify? It was definitely on my CD copy, so maybe it was some kind of bonus track just for the Yankee release. All that to say, if you enjoyed this album, I recommend giving that song a listen. What ultimately holds this back from being a 5 for me though is how frontloaded it is - of all five songs I’ve mentioned, four are (or at least were) in the first half. While I do like every song here, something about Sugar Spun Sister, Shoot You Down, and This is the One just don’t hit as hard for me. I Am the Resurrection is at least a solid track and should have been the grand finale to the album, but unfortunately, you have to sit through nearly ten minutes of Fools Gold from there. It’s not a bad song, but it is about six minutes too long and has no business being the closer to the album. Like Elephant Stone, I think it’s actually an included bonus track for certain regional releases, but either way, they could and should have placed it literally anywhere else in the tracklist before shipping it to us Americans. I teetered back and forth between a 4 and 4.5 on this one, but in the spirit of Britpop and what will soon likely become a public holiday in Britland (or at least in my home), we’ll aim higher on this one. This album is a total vibe, and there are so many songs here that just make me want to stand up and feel the music while I’m listening. Anyway, I’m off to try and score some Oasis tickets.
This one has been an interesting experience. I'm not sure I've ever heard an album where I enjoy it but almost simultaneously grow fatigued by it. I think I'm able to unpack this a little. I really enjoy hearing the meld of influences and can track where and how this album influenced acts that would follow. Much of the guitar work is really well done, and the songs themselves are fun with some impressive hooks. What I've personally experienced with this album, however, is I almost begin feeling overwhelmed by it. Maybe it's a little over the top with a bit of overproduction. A great example would be 'This is the One', a definite highlight but does it need to be drenched in reverb? It also doesn't help that much of this album, though varied just enough, sounds very similar, so by the time the record comes to an end, I feel like I shouldn't return to it for a while, at least in whole. Perhaps I'm nitpicking, too much. This is still a good album, though, with great moments where I wished it was more dour as the opening track would suggest. I think it just takes a minute to sink in.
Fun. Probably would have cut the last song to make it a nice tight 40 minutes. Would be great.
Listening to this while driving on a sunny Sunday afternoon, I was enjoying it so much I was tempted to give it a 5. But it just didn’t quite hit the same when I re listened while working on the Monday. Fools Gold and Waterfall secure the 4 though.
loved this album. I recognised a lot of the songs on this album. 'Fools Gold' was on the first FIFA I remember owning, and ' She Bangs the Drum' was on Guitar Hero 3 This album would have gotten full marks if the song ' Dont Stop' wasn't on here, I hated it. it soured the whole thing.
Interesting album, albeitb abit meandering. Loved the last track, though.
Fede og catchy sange hele vejen rundt med et par stykker som er 100p classics + ekstra point for den mega indflydelse det havde. Bare et fedt album :D
Enjoyed this more than I expected. Wasn't a fan at the time, and they do seem to get adulation beyond their abilities or output. And that backwards track would have been so much better without the vocal. But the big 'hits' here are pretty good, and have a unique charm that took me by surprise. Starts and ends well, which always helps. 3.5 stars.
This is a 3.5 for me: it was artistically unique for its time and kept me entertained, although I didn’t give it as thorough a listen as normal.
Actually amazing. Incredible album. Forward thinking and embracing the sound of the 80s all at once. I want to give it a five, but I feel like it's not perfect, especially due to the last song. Maybe I'll change my mind at some point.
Liked this more than expected. A bit of Pixies and MBV in there with the folksy stuff.
I’m surprised that so many of the biggest Stone Roses hits are from this album. I think every Stone Roses song that I’m familiar with is here. It’s very much a sound of its time that you don’t tend to hear so much any more. The jangly guitars together with the overuse of chorus and reverb on vocals sounds like it would be a mess, but it works so well which is why brit-pop became as big as it did. If you’re curious about the Stone Roses, this is definitely the album to listen to.
This was a new discovery for me! Loved those early 90s vibes.
Psychedelic, dreamy, shoegaze
Great album. Really enjoyed.
7/10. Felt basic at first but ended up really enjoying a lot of songs throughout.
This is one of the Brit Rock albums I’m glad I came across on this list. Has a somewhat timeless feel to it with some songs seemingly in the wrong decade. A lot of fun to listen to front to back, plenty of songs that were jams, and something I’ll be returning to.
I think it’s a good album overall with a few standout sections. I’d give it a 7/10
The name of this group was familiar, but I didn't think I knew any of their songs. Of course, I immediately recognized "I Wanna Be Adored". This was really good, and I see from Wikipedia that it was hugely popular and widely acclaimed - it just missed my millenial American radar.
very good, but slightly blown out of proportion as to how good it is.
I first listened to this album because I kept seeing it on all time album lists. Maybe it's the Sunday morning on the patio with dog friends and coffee, but this album is outstanding. I've listened to this a few times over the last 20 years was just ok with it. But today it's my soundtrack. Lol. The basslines are just cooking, very Peter Hook inspired I think. I'm also hearing how this album influenced the 90's. This thing really is an all time classic.
Pretty good
Liked this more than I was expecting. I'd heard them before in playlists of bands with harsher, noisier or just weirder sounds and the Stone Roses always stuck out as too normal in that context. But by itself it was a really nice album. 3.5.
Actually pretty enjoyable tunes on this one. Some chill and rocking songs that found the groove
Pleasantly surprised by this release. I didn't give these guys the time of day when they came out, but after listening to this album I may have to explore their catalog.... Solid song writing mixed with great hooks and big choruses. I like it!
A great debut. Dynamic, cool and confident.
Unrecognized jangle-pop masterpiece ;). Really tight, they keep it simple and cool. Not the most profound music ever made but catchy and accessible. Great dynamics, lots of variety and little surprises embedded in familiar rock formulas that somehow feel innovative. Musicianship is the highest quality, really excellent playing. Again, not overly complex, not tedious or boring. Bears repeated listening for that reason. I like the recording quality. It's massive but intimate, full, crisp. A great record, like if there was a happier British REM. "Fools Gold" rules!
Meteen is She Bangs The Drums een aangename verassing. Rating: 8,5/10 Highlights: I Wanna Be Adored, Fools Gold, This Is The One, I Am The Resurrection
Manchester City - Manchester United 1-0. 8,5/10 Highlights: I Wanna Be Adored Made of Stone This Is The One I Am the Resurrection
An often overlooked gem. Doesn't get enough praise.
I wasn’t familiar with this band before this album but I absolutely enjoyed it and would love to hear more of them.
4.5 One of my favourite albums I've come across doing this. Unreal. Favourite tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Fools Gold
Can't believe I hadn't listened to this one before. Love it so far. Songs kind of blur together but it's a sound I really like. Very Beatlesy in many ways. Would like to revisit! 4/4.5
Long time fan of this album. Nice to revisit it after many years.
Classic rock mood
A pleasant listen, I’m glad I heard it
great
hell yea thats what im talking about
Classic Album, Not an album I tend to listen to much now, but it is a must listen 'Strong 8'
I never listened to this album, but this was excellent. There was a few songs that were meh, but 90% of it was excellent
Dug this out last week and it's still as good as ever. Got a strong primal scream grove going. What could they have done if it wasn't so long between this and the next album. Classic band classic album.
I quite liked this. Nice jangly pop. Especially liked Waterfall, (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister, This is the One and Fools Gold. Too bad they only had two albums.
The last time I listened to this must have been a while ago, because I had two “starred” songs on Spotify, which was its system before “likes.” My guess is that was a decade ago that it switched. On review, I think I’m just going to like one of those: made of stone. Sorry, bye bye bad man. I was pretty dead set on this being a 3, but I like the last two songs enough to consider a 4. May need to listen again.
That was consistently good. Nice surprise.
Chill rock sounds
Overall I was into it. Remi ds of the smiths sad but poppy vibe. I'd be down to listen to it again. The track don't stop was definitely 5 minutes toooo long
Really incredible album and production. I feel like this is an underrated gem. The interludes and instrumental sections on this album are where it’s at
3.5 stars, enjoyed it more than I thought I would
Love the chambery feel of the firsts tracks and then it lost my interest a bit, still really liked it, 3.5 to a 4
Love this album
Album 434 of 1001 The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses Rating : 3.75 / 5 Good album. Was not familiar with them. Certainly one I will go to again. Very easygoing vibe.
Highlights: I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, I Am the Resurrection
кайф!
Pretty fresh sounding compared to the musical landscape when it was released... Definitely responsible for a lot of other music I liked down the line. I Wanna Be Adored is an all-timer.
Imagine what these guys could have done on a second record.
always really liked this record, gives me a similar feeling to rem and mbv. outside of i wanna be adored and dont stop im never absolutely amazed by what im hearing which keeps this at a high 8/10.
ghostly and crystalline
Never been a Stone Roses fan, but this album is jampacked with their heavy hitters, I enjoyed it a fair amount. Fave Tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, Waterfall, Fools Gold 4/5
What a pleasant surprise! This was super cool, a bit long and samesy. Still enjoyed it front to back.
I bought this album when it was first released. It was good. I thought the band might be on to something. Not a bad song on the album.
Glam-y, jam-y, rock goodness.
I wanna be adored
This one is good. Maybe too long, but has a good flow through it. Will I listen to again: 70%
Practically ushered in the Britpop scene with a great debut album and did nothing else. I have to respect it.
Actually really liked this, lot of lovely songs on here
In the 90s, there was a movement: britpop. Unfortunately, the album that forged that path was from a band that didn't put out an album during the peak of britpop — it's a little snotty and a little rocky and a little trippy and very British and The Stone Roses would be in the same breath as Oasis and Pulp and Blur if this would have been released four years later.
Ok, 3.5, its 1h long, good to have I guess
was i high in the bath tub while listening to this? sure, of course, so what?
Love the guitar work here. This just got better and better.
Get in, release one of the best albums of the 90s, get out (ignoring their second album as almost everyone else does)
fun! will definitely listen to some of the songs again, kinda sounds like a mix of 60s and 80s
Enjoyable. Some 60s psychedelia sounds. Will listen more.
Every time this album threatened to be great, it would go and throw an insane curve ball to derail any and all momentum. It's sort of like that Colin Farrell series Sugar that was working great as a detective noir series until out of nowhere in the 6th episode, it's revealed that Colin's character is some blue Avatar looking alien. That's more of a warning than a spoiler. But at least this album is better than Sugar.
Yet another 80s/90s Brit Pop album. My 3rd in a week, which seems sadly predictable. But I'm pleasantly surprised. This is rather good. The drums aren't quite over manipulated, the guitars are clean and jangly. It's not overloaded with synthesizers. I'm actually quite enjoying it. Good melodies, good hooks, nice vocals. Great bass sound. Sort of shades of The Zombies' Odyssey and Oracle updated 20+ years... There's a few peaks and valleys, but overall very solid. I'll absolutely listen to this one again 4/5
Surprisingly catchy psychedelic indie rock. Sounds years ahead of its time.
I very much enjoyed this album.
I really enjoyed this album. Psychedelic new wave. I like how Don’t Stop is Waterfall backwards with new lyrics. Great idea for a song
Not what I normally listen to but pretty good.
Didn't do anything particularly special, but I like it
I Wanna Be Adored had a classic riff, there's some aggression here but it mostly fades into a dreamy sort of atmosphere. She Bangs the Drums opens with a great bass riff and some noisy guitars, but the overall effect is still soft somehow. The chorus evokes the 1960s. The next few songs don't really hit the same heights until Made of Stone, which is as good as the first two with a catchy chorus and nice melodies. I Am The Resurrection is a strong closer with an extended instrumental second half.
Really enjoyed, worth going back for another listen. Reached my emotions.
a bit repetitive but i liked it
Took a while but this really grew on me. The laid-back, easy-going rock sound is a vibe! Standouts are Waterfall, Shoot You Down, Made of Stone, and I Am the Resurrection.
First few songs I felt like turning it off and coming back to it. Didn't think it was bad, just didn't feel like there was much to it and just wasn't in the mood to push through something I really didn't like for the sake of exploring new music. However, I'm glad I listened all the way through; there's some good stuff here. I am the Resurrection and Fools Gold ended this album on a high note. So solid. Definitely going to listen again
So nearly a 5
“Can you play something from the last century” “This is pretty funky music” “can you put something else on this is putting me to sleep” “when Matt is in the back seat you listen to contemporary music” - my dad Yeah pretty good, thanks Lucas. Imma do an Abhi rating 7.7/10
Love the Stone Roses and one of my favorite early 90s era britpop bands. Some absolute classic, made-in-Manchester bangers on here that are already in my rotation. However, bias aside, I do have to admit the middle of the album is lacking for my taste. But still, proper album overall.
Sounds like a precursor to a lot of shoegaze and other indie styles.
me likey 4/5
I really enjoyed this. While sonically very different, I felt like it had a similar vibe to REM’s Murmur which was my album for yesterday. It’s an album I’m sure you could dig into, but works just as well as one to throw on during a chill afternoon.
Delightful album.
So much I love about this album. It's definitely an album of a place and time. Some stone cold classics on here, but I always seem to start losing interest about the middle third before they bring it all back home.
who the fuck are the stone roses
This was one I hadn't heard of until now. It was a pretty solid album overall, with interesting enough songs to hold your attention. It had some parts that definitely reminded me of the Revolver-era Beatles, as well as some Smiths influence, which is always fun. I'm not sure I'd call it a favorite, but I'm glad I listened to it.
This is an album I grew up with and have always known about. I know basically every track, but I would never actually choose to play this album myself. The music is super pleasant, so nothing really to complain about. It does top out at a 4 though.
Liked very much.
Interesting light psych feel. I enjoyed this one!
I really enjoyed it and thought it was quite good.
Different, but very interesting and enjoyable.
The Stone Roses' eponymous album is lauded as one of the greatest British rock albums ever recorded. A critic likened this album to "an exercise in rock classicism," which is an appropriate assessment considering the musicality, reminiscent of the Beatles, the Byrds, the Smiths, and the Sex Pistols, but with a more refined finish.
Pretty solid all around.
Not as good as their second album but still a great album. An essential britpop/indie rock slbum
I Wanna Be Adored is a classic for a reason, and with such a strong opening track, the album is setting itself up for success. Muddy, grimey, madchester indie, that set the stage for bands like Oasis and Blur to dominate the 90s British indie-pop scene. Pleasant to listen to, enjoyable melodies. No dominant instrumentation in the album. Guitars, bass, drums, and vocals all dance around each other, which at times makes it feel... distant? Although it's an interesting listen in and of itself, it also seems like it wouldn't interfere with conversation at a dinner party, and could fade into the background easily. Sounds a bit like the calmer afternoon bits of a rock festival before the evening acts get started.
I have never heard of them and they were a great surprise.
I wanna be adored - nostalgic, soft voice with a powerful bass and battery. Beautiful masterpiece.
So damn cool. Great songs, great atmosphere. Dangerously close to the 5 star bump. 4.5/5
2024-03-11...
Excellent but not quite as good as it thinks
Walked so pop-punk could run
Great A side. The B side feels a little long and all over the place. But the A side is so good it stills merits a 4.
Effortless alt rock Pleasant enough, competent Last track: show stopper
This is one of those renowned albums that on paper checks a lot of boxes for me. I’ve listened to it a few times in my life and while I’ve liked it, it never has grabbed me like it has so many other people. I’m giving it a few listens back to back this time to see how it lands with me. On the first relisten, I still don’t “love” I Wanna Be Adored, and I think knowing this is the Stone Roses top song throws me a bit for the rest of the album. It’s not a bad song, just a bit overrated in my view. This Is The One however really stuck out on this listen, what a great song. The guitar playing sounds great throughout the album, and the vocals are also great. The breakdown in the middle of I Am The Resurrection is a bit of a “whoa” moment - what a jam this turns into! Fools Good is also a banging closer, with a groove that previews bands like Primal Scream. On the second listen I do indeed like I Wanna Be Adored. I think my hang up with this song is that it doesn’t say or do much lyrically. I guess it can be interpreted as the subject is so desperate for attention it’s all he can say, and that works with the music of the song, but it oddly remains one of the weaker tracks on the album to my ears. Elizabeth My Dear has the album’s creepiest lyrics, set to Scarborough Fair. I still really like the album, but still find it just shy of a masterpiece.
An album I still remember hearing for the first time. Enjoyable all the way through 7.5/10 (3.75/5)
A pretty chill album ngl great songs, cool guitars and some fire drumming
How have I never listened to this before?
Solid album overall. - 8/10
Maybe if I paid more attention to song lyrics I would have liked it better. Definitely some cool sounds though, and nothing really disagreeable. 7/10
8/10 - Solid music. A bunch of the songs I really liked. Overall pretty good album.
I had never knowingly heard this band before, but this album sounds like when you buy a new pair of jeans and they’re already broken in, with some tasteful little rips, a bit of fraying at the hem.
I liked it, it got better as it went along as well. I Am the Resurrection is a vibe!
No los conocía y me sorprendieron bastante
I stumbled across The Stone Roses when I noticed them on the Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Best Albums of all time. This is the first time I actually listened to the full album and really enjoyed it! It feels like the lyrics of the 60s matched with the instrumentation of the 80s. So it was great! 4/5
I wish more music from the 80's sounded like this.
All I can do is review the music. It’s very good, bordering on great. However, it’s meaning to Brits of that generation (slights older than me) has taken on a life it’s own, I get it, I have albums like that too. Its influence in creating Britpop can’t be under sold. The Stone Roses is interesting a cross of 80s rock and 60s rock melodies, driving rhythm. I Am The Resurrection is a fantastic closer, the album opens very strong and closes strong. It however, not the greatest album of all time, or close 8.1/10
The Stone Roses album was played a lot in the share houses I lived in around 1990-91, so I have a soft spot for it. But really, their reputation as bringing dance to indie, funky originators of Madchester mostly comes down to a handful of singles, especially Fool's Gold and (to a lesser degree) One Love, neither of which are on the album proper. Robert Christgau is not far off the money when he described this album as like the Byrds, but not as good. It really is a 60s psychedelic folk rock throwback. But the tunes are generally pretty good and the band is fantastic; a world class rhythm section and terrific guitar player in John Squire. they are at their best when they are stretching out instrumentally (eg the code on I Am The Resurrection). They do that 'play the track backwards' thing that gives me the shits, though. Pity about Ian Brown's singing. It's just rubbish, and let's not mention the lyrics. It is mixed pleasantly low on the album, so he tends to fade into the reverberant wallpaper at bit, which is for the best, really. I never understood the hype around this band. Was it the live show? Was it the drugs? Was it the way they basically flamed out in a blaze of legal disputes, band strife and thwarted ambitions? But the Brits really loved them. I don't understand why this ends up so high on their 'greatest albums of all time' list. I mean, it's a fun listen especially if you compile it with their non-album singles. I regularly play Fool's Gold when I am DJing. It's a super-funky track with a great groove, and it's so long that I can sneak away to go the loo, and head back to the decks via the bar. A pretty good album, which I do spin from time to time. 3.5 stars, rounding up.
I wish I'd caught this album on a better day; one where I wasn't operating on only three hours of sleep and could give fuller attention, 'cuz from what I caught on my two listens it sounds damn good to my ears. It's not the Madchester I expected to hear, but of course it's for the better it doesn't sound like EMF.
A highly energetic and funky slice of the late 80s to early 90s Madchester scene.
I really enjoyed this listen. Had never heard of this group. Too bad they had such a short career as a band!
What a gem! I guess I never really gave this album a listen (but I thought I did)? The songs are jangly, catchy little masterpieces and it's infectious like my favorite power-pop. I'm sorry that I slept on this for so long!
A fun mix of jangle pop and psychedelia. It feels to bridge the gap between the darkness of 80's UK indie rock and a more vibrant scene of dance music that would only just begin to bubble in the early 90's. While the hits aren't quite so memorable in the latter half of the album, the early songs have killer song writing and show a focused band at work.
Dobar chillich, 4.5/5 Najbolje pjesme: 1. This Is the One 2. Made of Stone 3. I Am the Resurrection 4. I Wanna Be Adored 5. Shoot You Down
A few clunkers outweighed by several bangers (including "Fools Gold," available on the US version of the album). Ideal music for shuffling at the club whilst staring at your shoes.
Это в каком-то смысле один из важнейших альбомов в моих музыкальных похождениях. Ключ к 80-ым и всей той скрытой для меня музыке из темных времен до. Лучшая песня - Elizabeth My Dear.
this has super great tones and ideas, especially I Am The Resurrection, which is such a jammy jam in the best way. Sometimes it doesn't feel distinct enough for the songwriting to jump out, but it's still a really enjoyable record
Amazing🙌
Good stuff! Can’t believe I didn’t hear them when they came out. This is why I do this project. Discovered a cool band. Starred a couple songs and the album. Some songs sound like Nirvana, others straight out of the 60s.
Surprisingly good
Fun album!
Great album, i would give it a 9/10 but it goes to 5, so 4/5 with a heavy heart
Enjoyed this one. I Wanna Be Adored hit me with all the feels. Sadly, they never topped this album. It's not perfect but it's a solid listen throughout.
Who do these guys think they are sneaking in I Am the Resurrection at the end? Learning that was originally the last track makes me feel a lot better about their album structure. What a jam, especially the second half. I was digging this album throughout but that song bumps it up a star.
an all around great album
01) I Wanna Be Adored - 10,0 02) She Bangs the Drums - 8,0 03) Waterfall - 9,0 04) Don't Stop - 9,0 05) Bye Bye Badman - 9,0 06) Elizabeth My Dear - 7,5 07) (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister - 8,5 08) Made of Stone - 9,0 09) Shoot You Down - 8,0 10) This Is the One - 9,0 11) I Am the Resurrection - 9,5 12) Fools Gold - 10,0 TOTAL: 8,88 (89/100) Not too familiar with The Stone Roses discography, but this is a really really good album. "I Wanna Be Adored" is such a classic! "Fools Gold" is incredible. "Don't Stop" is actually "Waterfall" in backwards? They re-recorded the drums and wrote a new lyrics and they learned to play it live. Ok, I need to give it another listen. Brilliant!
I liked this album, cool sounds
Solid. Smooth rock
4.5/5. I'll give it another listen sometime. but it's excellent, not a single bad song. first impression: just WOW! It feels very '60s and (early) '90s at the same time - tight beats, "wall of sound" but feels a little bit dancepop. I've never heard of this before and it is quite good, very psychedelic. But the songs do start to blend into each other... they are quite catchy in a chill way. great late-night study listen. standouts: waterfall, shoot you down, but really all are great
how can u not love early alt
Never heard of them - thoroughly enjoyed and would listen again.
I had never heard this album. Started out seemingly grunge like alternative but smoothed out after that. I liked the vibe
Great album, but you forget how long some of the songs are, especially the ones that shouldn't be that long.
When some of the guitars started to remind me of Oasis, I knew I really liked this one!
I’d only ever heard I wanna be Adored. I liked this one - sounds very Smiths and The Cure influenced with a dash of 60s Brit pop
I thought this was going Tonje overhyped hipster stuff, but I was surprised. Great tunes, great musicianship and all over a good vibe.
Interesting
This was pleasant, a cross between garage bands and 60s groups like The Monkees and The Byrds.
A band that I don't listen to often but am always taken when I hear them. At least this album. It has elements of the cure/the smiths. It is a little more shoe-gazey though and something really cinematically cheesy about these songs and not in a bad way. It is cool this came out right before the decade of the 90's cause sometimes the beats/the way the guitars sound seem to be perfect lead-ins to the direction rock was going before grunge/metal got more popular during the decade. I always feel like i'm talking out of nothing from writing these reviews but just listen to the first 3 songs and if you're not into it you'll know by then.
Wanna Be Adored is one of the all-time great opening tracks.
Thought the Stone Roses were a metal band, really nice and ambient album
Hmm, I have not heard about this band before. I really like the sound, the music, the voices. That‘s mine
How I loved that album when it came out at the height of the Manchester craze. It aged a little, as it was a product of its time. Well, I reconsider. Compared to, say, Happy Mondays, it has hold up well!
This was an interesting album to listen to. I liked songs and then I didn’t at the same time. Overall it was decent Top tracks: She Bangs the Drums, This Is the One
