Reviews (page 6 of 14)
I want to be adored- I can hear their influence on Oasis here. The vocals are slightly muted, like there is a veil between the listener and main vocalist. I like the lyricism of Waterfall and the guitar riffing at the end. The is something infectious about “Made of Stone”, I had to play it twice.
I really like this band. I heard them on social media and never gave this album a listen. It’s great!
Favorite Songs - I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Bye Bye Bad Man, (Song for My) Sugar Spoon Sister, Made of Stone, Shoot You Down, This Is the One, I Am the Resurrection
Wonderful album. At times fun, at times beautiful.
Alrighty, so this work is highly rated. I had to listen to this a few times to sink it in. I like the closer, the opener and some other songs. This is not really my type of sound but I can see why it was highly rated and might even give 4 despite not being my thing, but I might also want to REVISIT album in the future. P.S. I am definitely enjoying this quite a lot after a few listens, it is unique and I can feel the presence and influence of Pixies, R.E.M., Jesus and Mary Chain and older post-punk acts here.
I feel too much Beatles in this music for my taste but it is still very close to five stars.
One foot in the 80s, one in the 90s. Plenty of light jam and pop harmonies. Should have been on the Friends soundtrack. Goes from pop to jazz to funky, a great listen.
Really solid album, it's gonna take more listens to really get into but I liked it. I really like the choices they made on this record as it was a little experimental and entertaining.
Was decent
very fun album! kinda reminded me of the beach boys <3
Banger album. How do you make an intro song as good as I Wanna be Adored? Completely out of this world soundscapes. She Bangs the Drum is also simply magical, amazing melody, completely intoxicating textures, amazing harmonies... The otherworldly vibes continue to Waterfall, ehat a way to start the album! Don't Stop and Elizabeth My Dear are semi-duds, mostly because they find the band doing a sound they simply don't do that well, but the other moments are still pretty tight. Made of Stone has such a euphoric feel, it's amazing. From there on it continues with banger after banger, and the deluxe Fool's Gold it's such a good closer, you just lay down, listen and let the bassline hypnotize you... What a listen man
idk if i listened to all of it as i had it on shuffle by accident. however i throughly enjoyed listening while i studied
Never heard of them but pretty good.
So this album is so iconic on the UK, but the Stone Roses did not carry overseas to the US until they changed labels for their second coming album. This debut album and the following bustup with their label is a cautionary tale of checking what you are signing for, the legal case after the release of the album and stand alone singles basically killed their momentum. I like the album, but from Don't Stop and Elizabeth my dear kinda stick out like a sore thumb, it takes balls to do a song backwards and write new stuff for it, but the result is just ok. The rest of the album? Biblical... so its a 4/5 for me, the first time I heard it was probably ~18 years ago after hearing a cover of She Bangs The Drums in GH3 and wanting to hear more about the band RIP Mani played a bit of the album on guitar https://ibb.co/album/6J28KP
This was so fun! Devin loves the stone roses and I was surprised I hadn’t given it a proper listen. I think I confused it with queens of the Stone Age. Anyway, good shoot and a great way to start the project!
Die Meoldie sowie gesang ist gut gemischt. Es ist hier schön zu hören das es so was wundeerbares gibt
a few songs i liked on this one! I wanna be adored is a favorite, makes me fall in love always.
loved the vibe of it she bangs the drums is my favorite (love a song with an amazing drum play)
Favorite: Shoot You Down Least Favorite: Bye Bye Bad Man Overall Rating: 9/10 This is right up my alley, I really had a good time listening to this!
Expected this to be another one I wasn't a fan of, but it sounded really nice.
8/10
It was a good album and I was surprised at how good it was. Not my genre of music but still found enjoyment. I did tune out at the midpoint but wasn't put off by the music at a point it did start to sound samey but then was drawn back in. I wanna be adored was a great opening with a few other good songs scattered in between such as (song for my) sugar spun sister and fools gold which caught my attention. I did split the listening choosing to come back to it throughout the day maybe a full relisten needs to happen to properly enjoy and understand all songs Pretty good album and a few songs went into my like will definitely listen again for fuller experience
It seems we’re swirling in a Britpop section of this project. I’ve heard snatches of this album over the years, so listening in full now is like listening to an album for the first time that was full of radio hits, like Led Zeppelin IV or Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. Add to that the hype that this album carries with it. Some songs on here live up, while few others meander…lost in the jungle. I’m keen on She Bangs The Drums, (Song For My) Sugar Spun Sister, Shoot You Down, This Is The One, I Am The Resurrection and Fools Gold. There’s a psychedelic jam band element here that really shines. I can’t say there’s anything bad about this record. It’s not necessarily in my personal all time favorites vibe zone but I can see it being a strong grower. 4.5 stars. Also, this feels like a Spring time record.
Kinda boring but it grew on me kinda new wave meets grunge
I actually liked this, particularly the songs: ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ and ‘Made of Stone’.
i’d say this is one of the biggest subgenres of music that i am unfamiliar with, so whenever i dig a little deeper into it im always extra intrigued. i liked this way more than u2 and pixies. favorite tracks: this is the one she bangs the drums i wanna be adored
Enjoyed this alot. Big festival kinda sound. Little more musically interesting than oasis (who they are compared to because of Manchester connection) while at the same time being less compelling.
I'm surprised that I haven't listened to this before. It's a good album. I liked the Resurrection and Waterfall songs. I will listen again, but solid album at one go.
“I can feel the earth begin to move I hear my needle hit the groove And spiral through another day” If you were born in the UK between the 1960s and 1990s and have any semblance of pop culture awareness the first three tracks on this album will have been virtually unavoidable for you. It’s an astonishing three track run on a record which revolutionised the sound of English popular music and kickstarted a whole subculture. Having lived in Manchester between 2022-2025 it is plain to see the effect that the dance music scene bands like The Stone Roses, Joy Division, and The Happy Mondays created has had on the city. The Hacienda may be gone but we would not have events like Warehouse Project without it and this is the album that started it all. On an individual song by song basis it does lose me ever so slightly around the middle third. However, I Am The Resurrection and Fools Gold provide an ending almost as strong as the opening and the album is fully deserving of its mantle as one of the best and most important British albums of its era.
How have I never heard of this band before?! Nice easy going vibes. I often dislike ethereal vocals, but here they really fit and I appreciate them. The band plays really well and they sound like they would be a joy to listen to live. The album has a diverse sound ranging from chill rock vibes in I wanna be adored, to the psychedelic sounds of don't stop and the funky bass of Fools gold 8/10 an album I will be adding to my rotation
Great album, really starts of like feeling a 60s pop-rock band being brought to the 80s. But as the album progresses more and more of those typical 80s sounds are brought in, and it fits. Really want to give it another listen or two, which for me is a good sign of a great album. 8/10
Was high
Very much my vibe. I really like
I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Waterfall are cool
The missing (by me) link between 80s indie and 90s Britpop. Very nice.
I liked this. I love and own I Wanna Be Adored. I’d heard of a few of the other songs as well. This is my style of music. They influenced a lot of the bands I like.
👍 👍 good album Fav songs: Waterfall, I am the Resurrection
its fluid but still rocky
This is what I imagine the smiths would sound like if they were good. Sometimes pixies, sometimes MBV, sometimes yo la tengo
Some groovy smashing pumpkins turns into psychedelic beatles with some the clash? And so much more?! WHAT IS THIS BAND?! SO FUN
Album s brilijantnim početkom i epskim krajem koji malo kaska u sredini. Umalo da mogu reći pregenijalan. It's been emotional.
Upbeat danceable pop makes for an enjoyable listen. No duds. I added Fools Gold to the generator playlist.
I enjoyed this
This is an interesting album with a mix of sounds. Kind of the 90s alt rock vibe, some electronics, some garage band style, and some Beatles feels. I liked it and listened a few times.
Feeling like I 'had to be there' for this one but in the sense that I would have absolutely loved being 'there' and especially hearing 'this'
a few songs remind me a lot of the beatles and peter mcpoland. i really enjoyed it
This was such a cool vibe and genuinely it feels a bit timeless. It genuinely feels this could’ve been released in the last 10 years or so, it sounds that good. I loved the mellow vibes of it, solid stuff!
Mid/high 3, not a super big fan of the closing track but solid musical energy
I'd heard of this band, but thought they were a heavy metal band based on their name. Yeah, obviously I was mistaken. I really liked Made of Stone and I Am the Resurrection.
Always heard the big hits but never gave the full album a listen. You could probably get away with only listening to the well known songs, as the lesser spoken about ones aren't that great (except for Fools Gold I liked that one) but many of the songs on here are well known. A very good indie rock album, favourite songs were I Am the Resurrection and This Is the One - goes even harder at Old Trafford
I love John Squire’s guitar tone and Mani’s bassline — especially on “Waterfall.” Ian brought that atmosphere, Reni held it all together with tight drums. The whole band was magic. I was looking forward to their comeback. Now all we have is the music. RIP.
Favorites: I Wanna Be Adored Don't Stop Fools Gold
Felt like an edgy British teen boy, enjoyed it! Great background music as well
There were ups, and there were downs. Some awesome bass, and some definite Beetles vibes.
I honestly was not expecting much out of this one. I'd heard of the Stone Roses back in high school, and I even tried out a couple of tracks that I don't remember now, just that I wasn't really into them at the time. I remember thinking that they sounded much more British than I thought they would (not that that's a bad thing...I guess it's just that if I wanted to listen to rock n roll back then, I wasn't really leaning into the Beatles or Pulp or Morrissey). Maybe my tastes have mellowed or something. I liked this record alright. It kind of has some jangle pop elements and some of the songs are decently catchy. It does sound pretty British, but not in an obnoxious Oasis-y way. 3.8/5 I'm rounding up. I might not revisit this one often, and truthfully, they lost me on a few tracks. But overall, it's better than 3 stars even if I don't feel like it quite meets the mark of a 4-star record. I did enjoy my time here, and it was a bit of a surprise.
Legendary roll 10/10
Excellent album from start to finish.
The classic case where your first album is so good and you cannot live up to internal or external pressure to keep it going once the fame and fortune hits. An enjoyable record, but I don't see it as the same masterpiece that many do. I guess I should've been in Manchester in the 80s.
Good album, reminds me of The Shins.
Why am i getting so many hits now??? Is my taste too easy? FO FO SURE
RIP Mani. This is a really good and classic record. So many catchy tunes
Quite good
The sheer amount of acclaim that this gets is kind of baffling to me. Don't get me wrong, I actually thought this was really great, and as far as I'm concerned, this is approximately tied with Pulp's Different Class as my favorite Brit-Pop album I've ever heard. But I've seen people argue that this is a top ten album ever, and I've seen other people argue that this is their favorite album *ever*. And I have to wonder if I'm missing something, or if I need to give it more time, or if I'm simply not British enough for this. Although to these peoples' credit, something here is interesting enough that I *do* want to keep coming back. There is something to these songs that is *infectious*. For example, from the first time I heard I Wanna Be Adored to now I like it a *lot* more. It's slightly ominous lyrics also add a lot to it as well (I don't have to sell my soul, he's already in me"). I'm not exactly sure how to describe the dominant sound here, but it is very much a Brit-pop album from the 90's. It has a Beatles-esque understanding of pop, heavy inspiration from psych, and it's willing to bump shoulders with dance music. But I think the more distinct influences here go over a lot better than on most of Brit-Pop. Songs like I Wanna Be Adored, Waterfall, and I Am The Resurrection are very successful adaptations of psych for the 90's. Although, I am a little mixed on the album's most extreme psych-experiment. Don't Stop is kind of, sort of Waterfall played backwards, and while it sort of works, and is, in fact psychedelic sounding, part of me still thinks this is kind of obnoxious, but this is probably the album's lowest point, so it could be a hell of a lot worse. I also think The Stone Roses' flirtation with dance music is way more successful than the genre at large. For the majority of the album, it's there, but it's always in the background, quietly informing the album's feel and momentum. But it does break through on the epic Fools Gold in pretty glorious fashion. Aside from this, another favorite of mine is Made Of Stone, which drags in a tasteful hint of goth. And the rest of side B is largely as consistent as anything else. The more I talk about this, the less I find to complain about it. A lot of the songs are just that good. I may be slowly figuring the appeal out here, so I'll be sure to update at some point, but for now, I'm still giving this a very strong 4. This is some of the most exciting, well-executed, and interesting Brit-Pop I've ever heard.
Very cool album, I've never heard of these guys before! Lots of albums start strong and taper off, but I found this one to be different! 7/10
This was fun I liked this!
This was a really enjoyable album. Overall I thought the music was fun and unique. I really liked the elements of funk and the overall vibe of the album.
This music was wayyyy ahead of its time, if you had played this for me and not have told me it came out in 89' I would have guessed its release year in the 2010s. Dreamy, inventive, and unlike any other rock album coming out in the 80s in the UK. I'm at a crossroads of giving this a 4 or a 5, as although these guys are clearly pioneers of that dreamy, ethereal kind of rock (that I really adore) it doesn't have that special something that the other standouts do. With saying that this is one I will definitely be re-visiting. The 2nd half of this album was especially lovely. 8.5/10
This is probably the least pretentious English rock album I have heard that came from the alternative grunge era of the 1990s. Easily this was a solid 3.5 until you get to the final track which immediately kicks it up to a 4. This was incredibly refreshing, considering I knew none of the songs on this record and that the only single I ever knew from The Stone Roses, ‘Love Spreads’, was produced 5 years later.
Entdeckung
She Bangs The Drums oli tuttu Jostain (salee joku guitar hero), muuten ennalta tuntematon levy Tykkäsin pyörivästä (flanger?) kitarasoundista, tulee mieleen psykedeeliset proget
i tried to resist this i don’t know why but ultimately the 90s entered my heart and soul
Never heard any of these songs before, but they were really fun!
The one I was looking forward to and got all excited when I saw it pop up today. The one where I had great expectations due to its status as one of the best ever albums. The one where I had already knew one song (Fool's Gold) due to pop-culture osmosis and I kind of expected more of the same. Maybe then it's all on me due to misplaced expectations. Still good, not all-timer. Maybe it was a game-changer when it came out and nobody sounded like this. Maybe give it a spin again some time later and hopefully I'll feel different.
This was a revelation. Fits in really well with what I tend to listen to. Not sure how I went all these years without hearing them.
Feels like an amalgamation of every 90s alt rock band
I like!!!
Influenced a generation but wouldn’t go back to the full album
This is a great album that took me waaaay too many listens to finally get. 4 stars solely because I had to listen 10+ times to finally make the neural connections to enjoy it.
-uma reinterpretação de movimentos dos anos 60 e 70, mas com as evoluções tecnologias que aconteceram durante toda a década de 80 - influenciado também pelo punk, especialmente na letra, o que torna o álbum mais crítico e atual
I like their sound. Very chill.
New wave/post-punk meets indie. Some REM style in there too with prominent basslines and jangly guitars. Every track is pretty good in its own right. Thought I didnt like Stone Roses but this is decent. Elizabeth My Dear is a cover of Scarborough Fair? I Am The Resurrection has some nice instrumentals halfway through Best track - I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Waterfall (but did I know it?), This Is The One 4 stars?
They say this is like the first Brit rock album, and a theme of this exercise I’ve learned is that I do NOT like Brit rock. That being said this album is fucking excellent. The songwriting is so good and it sounds great. Shoutout one of my fav producers John leckie. A Davis classic. 4.5/5
There’s nothing I would change about this album. And YET, it’s not my favorite either. Clearly great, with elements that usually sweep my off my feet, but just not my fave. Still great though.
Fun that you can trace through Beatles to Pulp entirely through this album. What's not fun is how much the album drags on. 10 minute Fools Gold? Come off it mate.
Idk why I never listened to this album before. 14 year old me would have eaten this upppp. well 25 year old me too. Not unique, sounds like a lot of music from that era haha but really enjoyable will def listen again!
Three great songs.
I enjoyed it a lot
Solid album
3.5/5
A stone cold brit pop jangle rock classic. It's not perfect, but neither am I, so who am I to judge. 4/5
I have heard a bit of the stone Roses before but never paid too much attention to them. For an album released in 1989 it sounds an awful.lot like an album from the early 2000's. Clearly they're very influential, but it's also like their influence skipped a generation of edgy grunge kids. Overall this was a pleasant listen. A few absolutely brilliant songs and most of the rest is inoffensive.
This was an unexpected gem!
I've had trouble getting through this album on previous attempts because it kind of blurs together, but giving it the attention it deserves, it is in fact quite good.
Classic
I only got one listen of this and from a first listen I like it. I feel like it’s maybe hard to fully appreciate given how generative this feels like it probably was of so much that came after. Easily 4 great songs and other ms that may grow on me. 1) I wanna be adored: What luscious synths, they add such welcome nuance to an already great guitar backed drums classic intro. Don't love the singer's choice on vocal lines or lyrices, but solid first track. 2)She bangs the drums: interesting hearing this now, having heard much more of what came after. I don't love it, seems like a very early example of certain type of rock song that's now ubiquitous. 3) Waterfall: I like this. 4) Don't stop 5) Bye Bye Bad Man 6) Elizabeth My Dear 7) (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister: this song is annoying--it's a certain type of poppy soft-rock that I don't like unless it's imbued with tons of feeling, which this is not. 8) Made of Stone 9) Shoot You Down: love the intro groove. 10) This Is the One 11) I am the Resurrection: great song. Among my favs on the album 12) Fools Gold: holy shit.
Pretty fun little jangle pop album, though it can get unbearable on songs like "I Am the Resurrection" when they start buying into their own mythos. Basically, everything up until that is great though; it's the bridge between C86 and Britpop, and mostly it has the good qualities of both and misses out on their bad qualities.
Not my style but undeniably talented group.
Pretty cool sound! Enjoyed a good chunk of it too.
Really, really great stuff - I'm genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this! The baggy, or "Madchester", scene isn't something that had been on my radar before today but that might have to change. So much of the neo-psychedelic and, yes, "chill indie" music of the last three decades owes so much to this kind of sound. Great songwriting, killer instrumentation, and plenty of curveballs throughout - this album's got it all. Easy 9/10 on first listen, could rise to 10 soon!
3.5? 4? What do i do?? This album occupies an odd place for me in that when I look at it on Spotify I added almost every song to my liked songs but as a whole it left no impression on me. Low 4? Who knows??
The album combines some 60s-70s sound with punk / alternative rock. It's an interesting mix, easy to listen to, makes me want to discover more of the band. It reminded me of Pixies, Beach Boys or Simon and Garfunkel. Would listen to it again.
Forgot about this one!
This gets kinda trippy in some spots. Liked it!
This was pretty good
8/10
Great debut album. Definitely an album I will come back to so I can really take it all in
Didn’t have expectations going into this listen and it still blew me away. This is the kind of stuff i was looking forward to when i started this.
I enjoyed this. I can hear some of the building blocks that would become 90s indie.
4 av 5
Ett gäng riktigt bra låtar, ett gäng mer mediokra. Svag fyra?
Nothing stood out particularly, but this was super fun background music.
Trop bien j'ai joui par moments, c'était très bien au global mais manque peut-être de vrai son marquant
Stærkt Indie rock album med lyd fra flere tidsaldre.
While listening to this album, Don't Stop just kind of caught me. It's such a weird style of psychedelic rock that sounds like they're playing backwards. It's the type of thing that sounds super cool in conversation but is incredibly hard to pull off, and it works in this song. The Stone Roses I guess pioneered the "Madchester" sound, which is like raving, psychedelic rock which was prominent out of Manchester UK. It does have a late Beatles, 60's hippie movement sound. No surprise people like to get high, party and listen to weird music. Really sounds like something from the 60's, early 70's. There are still a few songs that are traditionally BritPop, which are also the weaker songs on the album in my opinion. Britpop is just.....not for me..... Overall a solid album and really cool. Doesn't feel like 1989 when listening to it.
70/1089 Whether the rest of the album holds up or not, I Wanna Be Adored is VERY much my speed, i’m so pleasantly surprised, it has that dreamy reverby vibe that i love in britpoprocky music I got quite engrossed in this record and was very pleasantly surprised, just a very solid britrock record where the singer’s vocals and the psychedelic style are right up my alley. I am the Resurrection is a great musical odyssey to end this album on. Then into the instantly recognisable bonus track Fools Gold which is so groovy and a great epilogue and is almost 10 minutes long?! Parts towards the end of FG very much remind me of the Tomb Raider Legend soundtrack (Peru/Kazakhstan motorbike sections IYKYK) 4 stars or 80/100 faves: I Wanna Be Adored, I Am the Resurrection, Fools Gold, Made of Stone, This is the One
I hated "Manchester" while growing up, but I seem to like it much more as an adult!
I enjoyed this listen experience. Classic British pop. Also liked the soft sound of the album
Didn’t think I’d like this album so much. No wonder it’s on so many of these lists
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Beautiful reverberating melodies, amazing vocal harmonies, I thought I'd heard this album before but I obviously had not cos it was way better than I was expecting. Favorite track: This Is The One
4.4
Great debut
50% is 10/10, the middle is a bit 'nothing'. If I could rate to 10 I'd give it a 9, but will do 4/5. Best hits don't need to be mentioned.
Old school vibes, really enjoyed
4.5/5
This was a surprise for me. I'd heard of The Stone Roses before but I don't know if I had ever heard their music. I liked this a lot. She Bangs the Drums, Waterfall, Don't Stop, Made of Stone, and Fools Gold all added to Liked Songs.
Great album. I can hear influences on Carbon Leaf, Oasis, and The Verve.
Definitely sounds like early 90s alternative, but this came interestingly early in 1989. Reminds me of a British REM. I like it for a certain type of mood.
love this!
Sound track of an 80s coming of age movie. So poppy and vibey loves it!
I am pleasantly surprised by this album, for once, a nice indie album that has nice guitar bits. It's like the Smiths if Morrissey didn't suck and touches of the Cure, which is a good thing.
Big Part of the jangle pop wave of the late 80s, that had a massive influence on the Brit scene that followed. never could be bothered to list to it at the time as got fed up hearing snippets of Fools gold and that beat everywhere, which turns out to be my mistake, can’t believe how close to the 60s music that inspired this the album actually is, And there appears to be a reported rumour of the idea it was actually going to be called best of the byrds?? Not saying that this is derivative, it’s definitely a group of Mancs in 1980 with their then modern influences but it’s also not the out of nowhere in the best British albums ever that people claim either. But because of the heavy 60s influence I love it, and it’s what the smiths might have been without that T*** M*******y. 4 Star
Not sure what I was expecting but I found this album to be quite good.
I knew a few of the tracks already, but hearing the album all the way through, the groove and melody tie everything together in a way that still feels completely timeless.
Wow, I'd never heard of these guys before. Really enjoyed it.
So many huge songs
I remember this album first time around. Love the chimbes of Squiyes guitar and lyrics and delivery of Brown. Some classic songs Waterfall, She bangs the drum and Reserection. A must for a MADchester Factory experience from an established band great baggy beats from Remi and super catch riffs
Many great songs but some songs are too long
Wonderful album. AT times fun, at times beautiful,
Excellent. Cool, disciplined, rhythmic. Great album.
Good vibes, weighted blanket of an album
Never heard of them before and I liked it! A bit jam-bandy for my taste but good.
Really solid- not a bad song here, makes for an easy listen with excellent instrumentation and production alike, sounding very mid-90s for being a 1989 record. "She Bangs the Drums" is the clear best but everything is very good.
Apparently this was anti thatcherite? But if you can't tell does it count? Reni's drumming an inspiration to us all. All the fats on here crying about the 60s 70s rock probably love this, which is taken from that. The backwards bits a bit much.
Heerlijk album met een paar pareltjes!
Great album. Added in my favourites.
I agree with all the reviews here: The album is great: original, good songs, coherent. It just doesn’t click with me. Maybe it needs more time to get familiar? Listened 1.5 times but it‘s still my distant relative.
I'm a Gen Xer, but I never made it around to listening to the Stone Roses in their day. Incredible how this 90s sound took me right back to my butt-part hair and baggy jeans and sweatshirt days. Solid record front-to-back. However, a little of that wall-of-sound composition goes a long way.
It’s a great album, but forgettable to me. I would gladly listen to it again, but to me it doesn’t climb its way to my heart. Reminds me a little bit of Grouplove. Top Tracks: Bye Bye Bad Man
Poppy melodies, psychedelic guitars, and danceable rhythms though the envelope of British alt-rock - a critical band to the Manchester scene. The few longer excursions have a sense of exploration and reckless vitality to them that I imagine was far superior in live settings (but still great on record). The fusion of genres is pretty seamless and sounds original, with some high peaks. The blander tracks are when they lean more heavily in a standard rock direction. Ultimately, there’s a lot of a great, unique, influential music here, but a few songs where it drags (particularly mid-album).
Stranger things
I am a huge fan of Hendrix and psycodelical music, but I came in kinda expecting I wasnt gonna like It that much since im not a huge Blur or Oasis fan, and they are the faces of the Madchester scene. But I was surprised, this album came in extremely strong, felt like I found something that wasnt possible in my mind. However, the second part of the album came weaker than expected. Not bad in the slightest, just felt a bit underwhelming and at some parts, It bored me a little, like they changed the vibe and It just wasnt It. It kinda went back up in the last two songs, but not like the first part. However, It still amazed me and its a 83/100 in my books
Just Stop was great
good late 80s brit rock. The vocals are understated and weave though reverb heavy trippy instrumentals. Easy to put on a listen through, despite not being what i typically gravitate towards these days. I would have listened to this way more as a moody teen, but have enough angst as it is in adulthood 4/5
Stunning debut album from the Roses.
Une très bonne surprise, sûrement un tournant à ce moment. On sent les influences sur le disque mais aussi on entend ce qui va influencer les groupes qui arriveront après.
Kinda crazy that I've literally never heard of this band and I have also never heard any of their music before (to my knowledge)
I really liked this! I was plesantly surprised, would definitely listen to more!
The sequencing in this album is interesting. It starts and ends with absolute classics of the era. The middle is saggy and plodding. Made of stone, i wanna be adored, fools gold, iam the resurrection are all the equal of anything released in the baggy era. Just stops short of a classic.
Fantastic album played it many times over the years
Wow, great sound, top tunes, unexpectedly classy, a real education for me, this is why I am here!
amazing 89!
I quite like Made of Stone and Elizabeth My Dear. There's a decently large amount of variety in this album, but some of the songs can be a bit slow and dull. Still enjoyable on the whole, with some interesting sounds - especially in the guitar sphere. 3.5/5 stars.
Very good
The Stone Roses is just one of those albums that i feel like is a 4 star album but i just don't really know why that is. This is an indie rock album so it has the sound that you would expect from an album like this being soft, melodic and somewhat weird. I do enjoy this sound like i do with a lot of indie rock albums but i do feel like this album is kinda sleep inducing. It is just really quiet throughout it's runtime and combined with that soft indie rock sound, i did find that my eyes were having a bit of trouble staying open. That being said though, i still thought the songs here were enjoyable to listen to and there wasn't anything that bad so it still say it is a very enjoyable album. Best Song: Made of Stone Worst Song: Don't Stop
Synes det var en del spennende her. Hadde tenkt å lytte på den en ekstra runde, men det blir med «first reaction». Svak firer.
Great vibe - very smooth and polished sound.
Your man squire is one of the best guitarists to come out of England
++: I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Waterfall, Don't Stop, Bye Bye Bad Man, (Song for My) Sugar Span Sister, Made of Stone, Shoot You Down, This Is the One, I Am the Resurrection +-: Elizabeth My Dear 9,6/10
already listened to it, a favourite of mine, a sound i ascribe heavily to, love the baggy sound. one of the bands i feel the lead singer is one of the least captivating members
Smiths-y sorta stuffs, but they get weird and experimental with it and it's a fun listen. Starts off pretty strong, too As someone who has sold my soul and wants to be adored, this album is right up my alley
This was pretty great. Knew fools gold already from tony hawks and can see why lots of people like them. In-between a 4/5 for me. Maybe a 4? Listening to this while working and would do that again as it fits well in that context.
Pretty good. Feels ahead of their time. 4/5
this was good, better than expected.
Great!
Solid poppy rock album, great production considering it’s 1989- nary a shitty synth in sight. Decent vocals, strong songwriting.
#119 - Quite enjoyed this, very listenable and nice sonic universe. Great album.
Hard 4 this one is.
It's an excellent album key down by a few fairly more meh songs. Easy 4 though. Uplifting in its way.
I thought these guys were something else entirely. Enjoyed a lot of this, will require further listening
This was a pleasant surprise! I enjoyed my time listening to this album.
All-round good album, got some beats that bit and some that don't so much. It kept me entertained on my way to work and a few of the songs I will pick out and put in a playlist.
Such good vibes
Really surprised how much I am enoying this. Based on their name alone I was not a fan. Evan Dando/Lemonheads vibes for sure. Also see how blur, oasis were likely influenced.
In light of how little material they actaully released, I find it quite amazing how the Stones Roses are being considered one of the greatest rock bands, evolving out of the late 80’s/early 90’s by many. Personally I Think they are overrated to some extend. That said.. This album is fantastic. There are no bad tracks and it is groovy and vibrant from start to finish. Epic!
I really enjoyed this one. It showcased a newer sound leading up to the cultural shift of the 90s. They were doing it before everyone else. Not a perfect album, but one that I could see coming back to and visiting over again.
Enjoyed the harmonies. Diverse song spread. Nice use of distortion for this style. Surprised I haven't heard this one.
Man, why have I spent literal decades thinking the Stone Roses weren't my thing? Especially because I love bands like Ride, the Charlatans, etc.? This album is great.
Excelente disco. Celest Phoenixcall.
One of the best intros to an album ever. Beginning of a new genre of music.
Really nicely done
Overall pretty good, didnd like the long intro to the first song but ended up really enjoying the rest.
hat ein wenig gedauert, aber dann hat‘s mich gecatcht, besonders bye bye bad man. die stimme wird nicht meine liebste, aber mag die lieder musikalisch gern
Great cult favorite album
Awesome debut album strong 75%
Brilliant - never heard it before but great first impressions.
i really enjoyed this !! good mix of my favs types of genres and easy to listen to, lots of fun
Much more low key than I expected
I like the weight of this thing!
Very interesting sounds and textures in this music! Album rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Essential Manchester zeitgeist album, ultimately a one trick pony band, but at the time it was splendid.
I may have heard these guys before. Pretty easy jangly indie pop listen, predating the Britpop explosion of the 90's. It was odd to read that apparently this record had been associated with rave and dance culture in England, as I don't think that this sound emits that sort of vibe at all (expect maybe the groovy "Fool's Gold", which was tacked onto the US release). Perhaps this can be enjoyed during a weed high I guess. Regardless, this was a strong debut that seemingly reached higher and higher as the album went on. The guitars shine here, backed by driving drums and a powerful/prominent bass. The last few tracks are long, but brilliantly showcase the marriage of the above. The vocals really amplify the overall dreamy experience too.
I really liked!!
Great album which takes you back to the late 80s and early 90s. It was a very daring album and I was impressed by the bravery to use a track played in reverse to create a new song!
Even now, with everything that came after this LP in the form of Madchester, Britpop and a belated reunion, The Stone Roses debut still sounds totally distinct from anything else. There is magic happening on this record. Save for a couple of tracks it’s wall to wall hits and songs that are developed and robust enough that they still surprise after countless listens. Despite being influential, band’s that have drawn from them never quite recaptured their magic.
realllyyy good made of stone i am the ressuiraection i wanna be adored
This was excellent, I’d never heard it before but this was fantastic. It has a little bit of a 60s vibe which is always a good thing in my book. I’m a fan of the opener, “She Bangs The Drum”, my favorite was “Waterfall”. “Bye Bye Bad Man” is also a pretty good one. “I Am The Resurrection” was also a fantastic song.
A very interesting, fun album with a variety of driving rock beats - it's hard to equate them with another similar band or style, but it's very enjoyable, I would listen to again
Nice
34/1001. Shoegaze meets britpop in this classic. Yes, I have it and yes it was important for me at a time ...and still manages to play nicely in most situations it seems (this time mostly in the car and with headphones). So much has been written about this album and the band and the long-waited sequel which I guess was a disappointment for everyone that it is hard to add anything relevant. Somehow this seems to fit right between a musical gap in the history of western pop & rock music, and that is probably the reason it is on this list (and on my shelf). Does this mean I love it? Well not immensely. But I like it.
This is the first time in a long while where I listen to an album and think “they had zero intention of having any of these songs play on the radio” You can hear the influences, almost culminating to a “best of” the times and styles of music while almost foreseeing what lies ahead for music in the 90s. Strong classic punk meets new wave/post punk while maintaining anthems of the 70s
It’s the got damn stone roses self titled lp
It's a damned good album, and "Resurrection" is a killer track....but it's just not as wonderful as it's fans pretend.
I feel like they write great riffs and hooks, but the songs don't move me. Like it's amazing pop, but doesn't hit deep in any way. Maybe if there was a Dissect series about this, I would 'get' it, but until then it's just 4 stars. - Strong opening. Spacious sound, hard to describe. This album is apparently 'legendary', so we'll see... - Idk, it's fun and unique but missing something. Easily 3.5, maybe a 4 but it's a long album - I can see how this is the music Radiohead was listening to in their early days - Droned on at the end, but not in a painful way. Going around for a 2nd listen (noted by *) * Intro is STRONG. Points for that. Though the actual song itself is just fine
Reminds me of the Pixies, but slightly more tuneful.
Great and Great
I dunno who this 'Chester' is or why he's so MAD, but this was a pretty fun album
Great album. I remember being introduced to this by a roommate with the phrase "you never heard the Stone Roses Rose..."
Je me pensais bien passé l’an 2000
some nice tunes, would give a 3.5 but I can’t so I’ll be nice and round up
Hell of a debut. I didn’t love it all, but the highs made up for the lows. Some excellent guitar/bass work that certainly isn’t in your face but buried in the layers.
I sat with this one for a week. Its a grower. Made of Stone was a highlight. Many songs made me think of Jesus and Mary Chain with no fuzz.
WHOPPER
Made of stone and this is the one are my clear favourites. Enjoyed this more than I remember when I last listened
What are you gonna do when Maggie Thatcher destroys your future? Molly.
Can't say I was familiar with the Stone Roses before listening, so this was a nice find. I liked the sound they had here. It was both reminiscent of older eras but also modern, even decades later. It could've been released as an indie rock album in the last few years with the style and tones used. Its influence must've been pretty swift, since it's got similarities to certain 90s bands as well (Oasis comes to mind). All the parts worked well together. The guitars, bass, drums, and vocals all complemented each other to make each song a nice whole. In the same way, the songs all worked well on the album together. They complemented each other to make a complete effort that was enjoyable to listen to. Even though some tracks were long and the album ran close to an hour, it never felt like it was dragging or growing stale. There really were no bad songs on the whole album. That said, there's not a lot here to say it's a great one. It's good, but a little bit boring. For the majority of the record, there isn't much going on but the simple compositions you might expect on a poppy rock record. They do make it a little more interesting for the last couple tracks, having extended songs that were stylistically diverse from the previous 10 tracks. The second half of I Am The Resurrection might've been my favorite part of the album. But that just made me wish they'd added some of those funky vibes in earlier instead of holding them off to the very end. And then making the last track 10 minutes (it was fun, but that was a bit much). I'll keep this one high on the good scale, but short of the great scale. I'd definitely listen to it again. Overall: 3.7
Pleasant 1980s sounds, good for morning
excellent proto-britpop ahead of its time. so deliberate and intentional, but without losing its edge. lots of interesting textures and production flair. no Oasis without this record. solid piece of work.
8/10 rock
Already a fan of this album. Definately if you took all of the Stone Roses work and did a top 10. Most of it would be on this album. They are a little formulaic at times with their songs but despite this I still find it enjoyable and they break out at different intervals to provide some great guitair solos. I just find it very unoffensive. Its also like a dance tune the way it has consistant backing and the "tune" is then stuck on stop. It therefore has catchy guitair hooks that repeat in a similar way in my opinion. Anyway I have a hangover so best I cant get out of my head right now!
First impressions were really good with 'I Wanna be Adored'. I really like the really ethereal rock sound that seems to be ahead of it's time. The album then seems to foreshadow the Brit pop of the 90's but still has elements that throw back to older English rock groups, 'Waterfall' reminded me simultaneously of the lightning seeds and XTC. The album faded into the background a bit after my initial impression, but all of it sounded pleasant then some upbeat poppy sounding tracks at the end turned my head. Definitely warrants a repeat listen, an interesting album that seems to balance on the threshold of the 80's and 90's styles.
Fun! I’ve never heard this album before
Released before I was born and Oasis etc. had taken over the airwaves in my youth by then. Such a good album. Pity they never hit the heights of the bands they inspired. 80% of the tracks are great. If they trimmed it down to 45mins it could have been a perfect album. 4/5.
Some nice, atmospheric tracks here and there. Liked it!
Great sounds on the instruments, very nice jams. The songs in the middle aren't as strong though.
A surprisingly great album from a group I didn't know -- and one that clearly didn't reach its full potential.
Surprisingly good. I'll definitely give it a couple more listens in the future.
Great album 👌
This has everything that was good about the 80s.
This is awesome, never heard of these guys before.
I had never head of this band before. I had so much fun listening to this one. I may need to add it to the rotation. 4-5 stars at the moment.
I never heard of them before this. My first thought is that they wanted to sound like the Beatles, updated to the 80s. It's good enough that I added it to my library, but not an all time great. The 8+ minutes songs are too long and repetitive. Favorites: I Wanna Be Adored Bye Bye Bad Man This is the One
This is a really great album! I was pleasantly surprised by how timeless and cool this album was. It was only dated in recording quality and guitar sounds. I really enjoyed it and will listen to it again for sure! 4 stars!
Really solid and innovative album!
Very good album I missed this somehow. Going to get multiple listens from here on out. Bummer they quit making music.
canciones fav todas
Very solid upbeat album. Great listen, but nothing special.
Almost a perfect album. The blending of psychedelia and proto trip hop (with some tints of classic rock) is breathtaking. Just a couple filler tracks from being a perfect record.
Can’t believe I never heard of thus group or any if their songs and music. Really enjoyed the album in general, and I Wanna Be Adored, This Is The One, I Am The Resurrection, and Fools Gold specifically. This is all too new for me to consider it one of the great albums, but it’s very listenable, will have a place on my goto playlists, and I can see how their sound and style was influential on many of the later Britpop supergroups. A seminal effort.
Pretty cool album and I can't believe it came out pre 1990. After one listen I put it at 3.5, but I think this could eventually hit 4 for me.
Best opening/closing track combo ever. Find the middle section of the album a little dull which holds it back from a 5 for me.
Other reviews call this "ethereal" which usually means it's going to be very difficult for my ADHD brain to hold onto as a primary focus. Therefore, I'll be rating on the "how well does this help me focus on other stuff and get shit done" scale instead of the "is this music enjoyable to listen to as an activity" scale. Mmmm. Synths get a bit distractingly 80s at times, but nothing too bad. Decent, unlike the vocalist's views.
"Fool's Gold" alone gets this album 4 stars even though the middle of the album, save for "Don't Stop," is kinda meh
Liked it, surprised I haven’t heard it before
Really good album with some great songs. Was not familiar with it but pleasantly surprised.
This album delighted me. It was like a perfect bridge from Beatles to the Smiths to Oasis. With plenty of surprises as well. Loved it.
I really like this transition period between 80s rock styles (glam, punk, folk) and 90s rock styles (grunge, alt, shoegaze, post). Mixing acoustic and electric guitars sounds soooo good when the acoustic fills a textural role and the electric takes the melody. Lots of tambourine makes the percussion feel more personal. See also: The Jesus and Mary Chain, Talk Talk, early Cocteau Twins, Talking Heads
Any one of these songs would be perfect in the soundtrack to an early 90’s indie flick.
Listened to most of it, with the first few tunes on repeat. Didn’t get to the two long ones at the end. Smiths on steroids.
We’ve got the Stone Temple Pilots, The Rolling Stones, and now the Stone Roses. Well colour me confused. It’s another Monday. These weeks really do just keep goin’ don’t they? I now understand why the powers that be are intent on destroying the planet. Maybe in these trying times, one of the innumerable bands themed around BIG ROCK can provide a glimmer of light in the cosmic darkness. Or, maybe it’ll be a precursor to the band Bush and I’ll need to take a shower. I Wanna Be Adored - Oh is this going to be a “New York” album? We’ve got the subway screeching already. Very influenced by the Smiths, seemingly. Not a bad song. Has a decent melancholia and a solid musical spine. Not what I expected! She Bangs the Drums - When is the William Hung cover of “She Bangs” going to show up on here? Remember that guy? Where the whole world united around the idea that guy who doesn’t speak English well is funny for that very fact. This song is quiet and repetitive. Fades away a little for me. Waterfall - First stones and now waterfalls? How many geographic features are we going to get in this thing? I kind of started thinking about moss and lichen during this song. Very, very dull track. Don’t Stop - Now I need to remind longtime readers of my impenetrable journalism that I am indeed writing the song titles, to make my pithy observations more legible. I will endeavour to continue to make the same amount of typos and run-on sentences to ensure the reviews are as painful as ever. Speaking of painful, this song happened, and the low quality of it inspired me to inform the listening public that I would in now way be reusing the stoppage of this song. Bye Bye Bad Man - Here’s another drab, monotone song. Whatever. Elizabeth My Dear - The surefire way to get a good review out of me is to sound folky or medieval. Of course it’s a jokey interlude, but it was a nice song. Hope that kicks up the energy moving forward. (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister - Now this is an upgrade. What a lovely melody. So much of this is ripped right from the 60’s, yet it has been updated for the modern (late 80’s) audience. Could use an album of songs like this. Made of Stone - They drove a dump truck full of money up to my house!!! I’m not made of stone!! Drive a Canyonero. Either this album or myself has been awakened by the Elizabeth interlude. A very nice song here. Shoot You Down - hey drone, you’ve done a great job up there, but unfortunately you’re in restricted airspace. Despite our pressing need for overhead pictures of the nearby landfill, we are going to have to shoot you down in a blaze of glory. Sincerely, the team at Air Force Dump. This song ruled. The jazz sensibilities mixed with the sweet melody make for another great song. This is the One - For what? The best song? It’s certainly not that, but it’s continuing in a pleasing vein. Not a bad lil track. I Am the Resurrection - I am reviewing conflicting reports of what the final song really is. I mean the ending of the last track (and its name) leads me to believe that was the album closer, but RYM says this is the last one, so we’ll go with that. Luckily it’s a nice one as well. Crazy long outro, but it still rocks fairly well. Roll that stone away, to find the tomb isn’t empty, it’s just filled with a cave bear who has a taste for British Power Pop. For such a colourful album cover, I was missing that vibrancy in the early parts of the album. I was bored and easily distracted, and I blamed the album. In the polar opposite sentiment of one’s Eugene Snitsky Esq; It WAS my fault. From the folk interlude “Elizabeth My Dear,” I was awakened and listened with a renewed sense of purpose. I need to go through this album again in order to give the early tracks the same care and attention but this was a beautiful release. Charming 60’s simplicity with updated 80’s aesthetics that made the self-titled debut a thoroughly enjoyable distraction on my interminable march towards lifetime employment. I’ll have the reports in by noon. 3.5-4 HIGHLIGHTS: I Wanna Be Adored, (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister, Made of Stone, Shoot You Down
I had always heard of Stone Roses in passing, usually by music snobs who liked to name drop. I get it. The first time I listened to this album was while passively working. It had a great feel. By the third time I still don’t feel like I got it all and want to go back again. It reminds me of a musical bridge between the Moody Blues and the Beta Band. Were Stone Roses the original Indie-Kings? Key tracks for me are Made of Stone and Don’t Stop, though shout out to I Am the Resurrection. I’m coming back here again, so hopefully I can name drop in the future 😄 Does that make me a musical snob or a connoisseur? I am going with the latter, of course
The stone roses definitely influenced some great bands including two with a bitter rivalry. Oasis vs Blur!
Balala
Surprisingly good. Kept expecting rock cos I was thinking guns n roses but enjoyable. Some decent tunes but no full on banger really. Solid album Specific rating - 4.2 Fav Song - Made of Stone Least fav - bye bye bad man
Very good vibes! Definitely helped that I listened whilst on a beach in the sun....
classic album that has clearly influenced a lot of the newer artists i listen to, only thing is the last few songs have pretty long instrumental sections which i may skip on re-listens. Fav: i wanna be adored, she bangs the drums, waterfall, elizabeth my dear, fools gold. Least fav: dont stop.
A really pleasant surprise
Фоном слушается замечательно и музыка гораздо приятней, чем можно было ожидать. Последний трек только немного утомляет. 7 из 10.
pretty good soft alternative tbh
This is a good album but it's definitely overhyped. I wanna be adored is great but it peters out towards the end of the album.
A good overall sound, not huge on the vocals but they're mixed in a way that I can cope with it. I even took a look at their second album, which had a great guitar sound but the song writing wasn't as strong.
Knew and liked some songs from this before but didn't realize how stacked it was. Packed with tunes, groovy as hell. Biblical, even. Strong four I'd say.
Favorite: - She bangs the drums Heel leuk album! Had voor mij wel 2/3 nummertjes korter mogen zijn.
made of stone and sugar spun sister on top!!! last two songs were unnecessarily long with random guitar sounds. 3.6
I can listen to this album on repeat for hours
Really funky and cool album
Acid rock, beatles-esque almost. Mesmerizing and impossible to take yourself out of once you fall in love
This is the one I've waited for!!!
A little embarrassed to admit after hearing this album referenced my whole life that this was the only time I can remember ever listening to the whole thing in one sitting. I know some of the tracks of course, especially the first three. Having listened to it, I definitely dig it, and it probably deserves a 5, but I feel like it passed me by, so 4 is best I can do
Okay, so THIS is the Stone Roses! I've heard their music over the public radio once in a while, never an album. Opening Track is a mood-setter, i should read into lyrics..meh Track 3: WaterFall is super Folksy compared to Track 1? -The Spotify Commercial break of DJO (Steve from Stranger Things) is so BASIC! FUCK THAT SUPERPRODUCEDSHITSHOW! _ The Folk Feel on Bye Bye Bad Man...the Lyrics! The 68Riots...Timely. -Reading the Wiki, 1st album was a collection of music ideas, sounds like it. -I am the Resurrection...just kept going on, didnt even realize it.. -Album Closer; Fools Gold could almost be a Beastie Boys Song.
This album is catchy as a gill net and content-free as that same net pulled out of an unstocked lake. Practice frame for Oasis, who knew where the big fish were.
How many bands have put out a great debut and either broken up immediately, or followed up with something meh before breaking up? In the latter category, there's Elastica and the Stone Roses. This record holds up better than most of their contemporaries, and yet the goddam Happy Mondays, a shambling group with a few singles that don't hold up well decades later, manage to have TWO records on this list. At least Dimery had the decency to forget Inspiral Carpets on his list.
I have admittedly never listened to this entire album until now. It's really great. Not the album cover. I never did like that. (What is it? A cutting board? A Jackson Pollock?) Oh. Wait. Just read the Wikipedia article on the artwork. "The cover was named by Q magazine as one of 'The 100 Best Record Covers of All Time.'" Umm...no. YOU ARE WRONG, Q! WRONG! But the music is really great. Also, TIL, my favorite track from this album (Fool's Gold) wasn't actually on this album. It was a single-only release they tacked on to the end of this album in later reissues.
4/5
I'd never heard of The Stone Roses before today, but I really enjoyed this album. Every song was super hummable and grooving nicely. Good vocals, good production, good melodies, good songwriting. Four stars.
i liked it. unfortunately didn’t have much to say about this. will probably listen more in the future
Without getting really super into it, they do have a really great sound that I enjoyed. Feels like a returnable album fs.
I only really knew Waterfall before going into this album It was exactly what I expected it to sound like! That distinct British summer vibe. I recognised a few songs by the end A good and enjoyable album 4 ⭐️
I'm glad I stuck it out for this one. It was better than my initial feelings. Outside of Elizabeth My Dear and I Wanna Be Adored I bopped along quite satisfied. Its not my usual thing but surprised me a little with my enjoyment. It hits that apathetic British rock sound and singing and makes it listenable, Fools Gold was great for that!
Slightly above average album 3.5 to 4⭐ Favorite tracks: Made of stone and I Am the Resurrection
Muy bueno, el principio mejor que el final entonces tal vez me subió expectativas
Almost perfect but got repetitive
83/100.
Hmm, never heard of Stone Roses before. Maybe because they took a while to catch on with some folks but never reached a large following. While I cannot say I think this is one of the greatest albums of all time, for a debut, it is pretty solid. Liked the sound, very heavy but balanced on rhythm and accompanying guitar, solid beat and decent vocals/lyrics. The two extended tracks that end the album give an indication they were probably a good live band!
Vibey
Got into this album late and am mad of the waste of decades I didn’t get to listen to it
Track thoughts: 1) This sounds more modern than 1989 to me. So far I like this, more my style than some of the earlier albums. Reminds me a bit of Smashing Pumpkins, who I guess were already big by this time. 4) A bit trippier, not as much my thing I am the Resurrection is a really awesome track
I’ve only listened to this a few times, but I definitely need to start spinning it more. It’s such a great blend of alternative, neo-psychedelia, jangle pop, folk, and dance music. It almost feels like if 60s psychedelic music had never faded away, this is what it would have sounded like by the late 80s.
For this review, I listened to the tracklist of the original U.K. release, and chose to ignore the tacked-on bonus track "Fools Gold". I've heard a few Stone Roses songs from the Guitar Hero games: "She Bangs the Drums" and "Love Spreads". They seemed like a short-lived group I didn't hate, but I wasn't wowed over either. Well, that changed today with checking out their debut album, and I can now say that they had at least one good outing. With their debut, the Stone Roses invented the Madchester sound, a very English mixture of alternative rock and psychedelia, taking inspiration from the jangle pop of the 1960s. The jaunty guitar lines from John Squire, the tight rhythm section from Mani Mounfield and Reni Wren, Ian Brown's delightfully British vocals, and John Leckie's atmospheric and revered production made for such a rich style. Songs like "She Bangs the Drums", "Waterfall", "Made of Stone", and the eight-minute closer "I Am the Resurrection" popped off with a certain hazy yet danceable bliss that I can see how they would go on to influence the Britpop sound of the 90s. If I had to make a complaint, this album does drag a bit in the middle, particularly around tracks like "Bye Bye Bad Man" and "Elizabeth My Dear". They're not bad songs, but they're also not strongly composed compared to the rest. That said, this was a great debut album from the Stone Roses. Sure, the second album would be an over-bloated nightmare and the band would dissolve quickly after, but for the one time, the band was on top of British popular music and deservedly so.
Indie / psych rock album with a laid back feel. It was a pretty enjoyable listen but doesn't quite reach 5 star heights for me. Shoot You Down is the standout for me and I love the way it builds up to such a quiet and relaxed chorus.
