Now who doesn't love the McAloon Bros! Their lyricism and pure pop approach has so many facets (Some tongue in cheek of course. Spoiler Alert: I Prefer Jordan-The Comeback, to this Album but it still ahs a lot of positives. Love the Title Track and "Faron Young" which is a great opener. Absolute favourite on this album though is "Horsin' Around" which in my opinion shows the bands strengths in both songwriting and musicianship. (echoes of Steely Dan methinks!) Great Album rightfully on the list.

Slick production. There are interesting elements but it's way too sugary for my tastes. Definitely a pop band. Not sure the "jazz" elements help with me either. Some kind of ick factor with this band. Feels like Patrick Bateman would discuss them in detail. Couldn't wait to get through this. Almost a 2 for some of the interesting parts... but the more I listened to the album the worse it got.

It's a smart album reminiscent of the age it was released. Sounds a bit like The The, but without the oomph. I could listen to it again.

Very entertaining. The first five tracks on the album are super strong, though they have a heavily produced 80's feel with a bunch of sounds that would be in an ABC video. It tapers off a bit at the end, but really enjoyable.

I remember the band's name because I always thought it was unusual and interesting (reading the Wikipedia entry on the band, turns out it's a mondegreen, which for some reason makes it more fun for me). I had not listened to any of their songs before, at least none that I remember, so I gave this album a full listen. Although I don't love their music, I do hear it as decent pop music, and I'm not saying that facetiously or ironically. The songs are somewhat catchy, they play well, and their vocal harmonies are strong. I found the songs to be a bit too similar to each other and musically predictable, so it doesn't compel me to want to listen to them again, but I can see why they were big in the 80s. Very much an 80s pop sound.

I bought my copy second hand and it came from the library of a radio station (not sure which). They labelled the album with \"Mellow, contemporary, soft rock\". Which is kind of apt when you think about it. Paddy McAloon is a genius song writer since re-discovering Prefab Sprout through my wife, I have always wondered why they weren't bigger.

Reminds me of Lounge version of Elvis Costello. With creative instruments. One thing that kinda drove me nuts: words not seeming to line up with music - like Goodbye Lucille #1. Some of this reminds me of something you’d hear in a mall in the early 90s.

Starts off as a strong alternative LP but quickly loses itself in dated synths and truly awful songwriting. I swear everyone in the 80s set their Juno-6 to the same vocal-esque patch and used that for pads.

Moving the River is the standout track for me.

Not bad, easy listening, didn’t really grab me.

Overall the album was okay. It felt very front-loaded with the catchier songs at the beginning and fell down after about the halfway mark. I wouldn't go back but I didn't feel the need to turn it off.

Felt completely neutral about this album, far from the worst, far from the best.

This album is very meh. I enjoyed Bonny and put that into my regular rotation, but other than that I found it very un-eventful and no songs jumped out (except for maybe Horsin' Around which I disliked). It's OK. I was considering giving it 2 stars as I start actively disliking it towards the 2nd half of the album but in general it is quite inoffensive, and I did add one song to my regular rotation.

Holy shit did this album catch me by surprise. I had never even heard of Prefab Sprout before this and I loved every track on this album. This might be the first album this generator has introduced me to for the first time that I absolutely, fully enjoyed. Literally don't have enough good things to say about it. Fav songs: bonny, when love breaks down, goodbye lucille

Prefab Sprout's second album was a glorious combination of singing/songwriting and pleasurable tunes. This album has been described as a minor classic - a statement I agree with. Every song holds up on its own, and they all come together for an amazing sophisti-pop album. Never heard of sophisti-pop before, but it's a combination of new wave, jazz, soul, and pop. I'd recommend this album to any fans of pop, jazz, post-punk, and/or indie music.

I have no idea why this album of Prefab Sprout is on the list. Uninteresting jazz pop from the 1980s and very very boring.

A real shame for me this one. It starts so well, after 3 or 4 tracks I thought this had the makings of a new fave for me, I was hovering over the 5 stars, but then the prefab doubt began to creep in and that went down to 4 by track 6 and down to a generous 3 by the end.

Some of the tracks feature a particular brand of generic 80s production that depresses the hell out of me and I instantly thought we were in 1 star territory. But I listened again and realised that was a bit harsh. The songwriting seems pretty strong and there's more going on than I gave it credit for at first. Faron Young and Goodbye Lucille #1 are good choons. 2.5 stars.

Really quite liked it. Not sure whether that's something I can be out and proud about, or whether PS should be considered a guilty pleasure. If I must throw in a criticism, the songs can out stay their welcome ever-so-slightly. Though that might be more of a fault with my short attention span

Based on The King of Rock and Roll, I was expecting to hear more New Wave-influenced pop, but I enjoyed the more atmospheric pop ballads as well. Thanks to my late English friend David for introducing me to Prefab Sprout a few years back.

Excellent songwriting, great lyrics, fantastic performances from the musicians. Honestly, the biggest thing holding this back from 5 stars for me is that it can feel very dated in the 80s at times. But damn, it is a rock solid album.

Never heard of 'em. Why do I love this? It's not really grabbing me but... everything is perfect at the same time? I listened to this three times yesterday. Can't believe I've never heard any of this. I kept expecting their hit to play and it never came.

Tricksy, whimsical, luminous - manages to be sophisticated but there are pop hooks all over the place. There's a dizzying array of influences on display here, from Harold Arlen to Squeeze; and I would wager that a couple of guys in Jellyfish had this album. Lovely stuff!

Band names are so fun. All the words, in all the languages and these dudes landed on Prefab Sprout. Nothing else would do. Had to be Prefab Sprout. Ha. There’s nothing about this album that sounds anything remotely like whatever it is the name Prefab Sprout conjures in my head… and yet, yeah, a lot of this is pretty good! Who are these Sprouts? Why have I never heard or seen a word about this band anywhere ever? Band names. God bless ‘em.

Really liked this album!

Great guitar work on the album opener. Followed by a great acoustic rocker that reminds me of Aztec Camera. We're off to a great start. Next couple or three lean a little to far to the pop side of the spectrum for my tastes, but the songs are good. And the rest of the album continues in this vein. Good songwriting but the style of music and production keeps me at arms length. 3.5 🌟 in recognition of the songcraft.

Nunca había ni escuchado su música ni siquiera el nombre. Cuando empecé a escuchar el álbum pensé "nada de lo que esperaba... esa portada no indicaba que fuera a ser pop 80s... interesante". Casi la primera mitad del disco una cosa muy buena, pop que se oye sofisticado con algo de post punk. Esa primera canción excelente con sus toques de cowboy y hasta con algunos puntos de sonidos industriales y me empiezo a emocionar y me pregunto qué más vendrá... Bonny y Appetite elementos un poco similares más atenuado pero buenas canciones... Sigue así de manera bien, ya no levanta tanto pero está escuchable y entonces pasa la desgracia... A partir de entre la canción 5-6 por Hallelujah y Goodbye Lucille se pierde todo lo interesante y el sonido se convierte en pop jazzeado suavecito de estación del metro sin ningún punto de interés y a nivel que parece da vergüenza lo trillado y soso que suena. Es una de las decepciones de mayor grado que me ha dado esta lista en cuanto a la disparidad dentro del mismo disco. Inició con la tentadora promesa de ser algo único e interesante, continuó estancándose un poco pero sonando decente y terminó en el caño. Al menos saqué una canción muy buena del disco pero no es como si valiera la pena suficiente para estarlo buscando.

Qué cosa tan rara. A veces suena como a broma, otras a algo demasiado elaborado y otras como a algo hecho por una banda de preparatorianos que están aprendiendo a hacer rimas. No lo odié, por lo que no le pongo menos calificación, pero sí es de esas cosas que me cuesta trabajo entender qué hacen aquí. Leo que comparan a Paddy McAloon (el vocalista y compositor) con Bowie o McCartney y pienso que el que escribió eso es sordo o un incitador.

I don't think I liked this one. I have never heard of the band, nor any of the tracks. The album started out with a sound that hinted at the Squeeze. By the end the album had settled in closer sounding like Talk-Talk or Spandau Ballet -- just not what I'm interested in. I don't think I'm far enough from the 80s to enjoy this one.

-New band to me -First track rips! Love how the punchy post-punk guitar-work mixes with the twangy banjo(?) and country drummin'. Some more weird effects + harmonica are added and turn this thing into an acid drenched western tune..I'm about it -The album then sadly "breaks down" into some standard 80s pop fare and fails to rebound 🌟

No mistaking the decade … 18 when this came out … and I liked them then …some great pop tunes … some beautiful writing … I do struggle with the production massive reverb over everything … ultimately gets in the way for me

Unrelated to my thoughts on the rest of the album, but "Faron Young" instantly made me think that Prefab Sprout had lifted the riff from Dr. Feelgood's "Roxette". Enjoyed "Bonny", less fond of the rest though. The style of the album seems to change with every song, so while I'm sort of trying to like this album, the lack of consistency is a bit frustrating.

Good music. Very easy to listen to, a few songs were a bit boring, but most songs were really good.

Astounding record without a single bad track. The songwriting by McAloon is phenomenally done, and the instrumentation sounds gorgeous. This album could have came out yesterday, it sounds that great. This is another band I had never heard of prior to listening to the track, but this has become one of my favorite listens all year.

"when love breaks down" is actually a pretty good song but I don't like the music otherwise

A very pleasant 80s "new wave" pop album. The production is quite different then a lot of its contemporaries in the 80s british new wave scene. Singer-songwriter pop with some very interesting lyrical work. The album has a few tracks that stood out a bit but for the most part its consistency is easily its strongest asset. There was never anything to dislike even if the highs weren't soaring either.

Haha it’s very 80s ain't it? Dude sounds like George Michael in Wham! a bit. I think I liked “Horsin’ around” the most with the Bossa Nova style cus it was a little different, not really my thing as a whole though.

Engineered by the great Thomas Dolby, the sound quality of this album is superb. This is an album of perfection that never tires or grows old. Why can’t all albums be this way?

I listened to the Legacy edition & the US bonus tracks, enjoyed it, maybe the acoustics moreso. Very reminiscent of a casual outdoor playlist, just having part of the album on in the background outside. Reminded me of Dire Straits meets David Gilmour

Definitely sounds like the era it was released in. The copious amounts of banjo in the first track was a pleasant surprise. I went in blind here and was fairly pleasantly surprised. Definitely some weaker tracks and a lot of it is cheesey pop but a pretty solid record

Le groupe Prefabs Prout n'a jamais percé et il en est très complexé. Cet album concept intitulé "Steve McQueen" du nom de l'acteur connu n'aborde qu'un seul thème : la célébrité. Le projet est en quelque sorte une réponse à la deuxième ligne de leur page Wikipedia française qui avait semé la zizanie au sein du groupe.

I’ll be surprised if I like this based solely on the cover haha jk going in judgement free. first song, okay so i barely know country but theres some here, right?lol. i liked the melody for the 'you give me faron young 4 in the morning' line. second song is way nicer. appetite is what i expected from an album from the 80s lol. veeeery nice. this has to be their most popular song, right? 4th song, nice too. honestly other than the first song im liking every track. i've mostly skipped the 8 acoustic versions.. what little i heard is nice but i dont want to listen to essentially the same 8 songs twice

This was a pleasant surprise of an album. Sophisti-pop creme with just the right touches of jangle pop and new wave. Bonny and When Love Breaks Down were the standout tracks, but the first half of the album is fantastic.

When people say they don't understand this album, or that it's "too 80's" , what they really mean is that they have never felt soaring, impossible limerance and soul-wrenching heartbreak; their lives have been absent of love and loss. Or, even worse, that they have bad taste in music. Five soulful stars suckas

It's not as bad as the really atrocious albums we've had, but I really can't say anything good about this album beyond that. It's mostly just really boring with the occasional hint of pretty annoying.

Veryyyyyy interesting. First track sounded like Arctin Monkeys modelled some of their middle/later years stuff on it. Decent, enjoyable, to start with, feels like a 3. Dropped off a bit as its progressed, feels a bit more like a 2 by the mid-point. Yeh, 2/5

Surprisingly good album. All the tracks have a nice casual swag about them. You could set this album on repeat and go about your business very contently. It really is a pleasant album to listen to in almost any situation. 4 Stars!

Holy enjoyment, Batman! An album with a jangle pop inflection that I actually enjoy? What a marvel... This record has a lot of stellar things going for it, from the genuinely fun songwriting to the delivery of the band. The drums and bass lines do exactly what they need to do without sounding flat or invisible, the flourish of guitar and synths give the songs great personality, and Paddy McAloon on vocals is a genuinely pretty good singer. All in all, this is an easy album for me to enjoy, though the slower songs didn't quite capture me. Either way, a great album!

Smart, sophisticated, and timelessly stylish, Steve McQueen (titled Two Wheels Good in the U.S. after threats of a lawsuit from the actor's estate) is a minor classic, a shimmering jazz-pop masterpiece sparked by Paddy McAloon's witty and inventive songwriting. McAloon is a wickedly cavalier composer, his songs exploring human weaknesses like regret ("Bonny"), lust ("Appetite"), and infidelity ("Horsin' Around") with cynical insight and sarcastic flair; he's also remarkably adaptable, easily switching gears from the faux country of "Faron Young" to the stately pop grace of "Moving the River." At times, perhaps, his pretensions get the better of him (as on "Desire As"), while at other times his lyrics are perhaps too trenchant for their own good; at those moments, however, what keeps Steve McQueen afloat is Thomas Dolby's lush production, which makes even the loftiest and most biting moments as easily palatable as the airiest adult contemporary confection.

Chock full of 80s tropes, done stylishly. The emotional backdrop of this album interests me - the overall tone is earnest but cool, which allows songs to explore nuanced adult feelings. Some of the synthesized tones, especially the overused vocal backgrounds, sound rather cheap and dated. The songwriting is proficient, the voice and studio production are clear.

Beautiful songs with vibrant melodies and elegant arrangements. I personally preferred From Langley because of the songs, but this one is pretty goo too

My god. What part of this album did they say “wow people need to hear this before they die?” Maybe it’s something British that I don’t understand but the whole Steve McQueen bit doesn’t work at all for this album. I’d bet money that one of those tossers saw that bike on the road and said “Oy! Look at me I’m Bullet” and that’s how they took their album cover. I’m not sure where they came up with their name either but nothing about this band and album makes any sense to me. To be clear, I did like Bonny. That was a good song, but like a few others on this list, one good song shouldn’t get you this far. This is just a case of one too many bands of the time trying to vie for my attention. The last thing I am looking for is a new 80’s British Pop band to add to my collection. I’m also enjoying the beat on Horsin’ Around but this whole album kind of feels like that is what they were doing. Also the guy in the back standing up looks like Bill from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

Este disco me lo compré en el viaje de fin de estudios del instituto. Ha sido agradable volverlo a escuchar. Las mejores para mí: Faron young, Bonny, When love breaks down, Goodbye Lucille #1 y para terminar When the angels. Un grupo inglés que sonaba a ratos como americano y que realmente tenían unas voces impresionantes. Totalmente recomendable.

Never heard of these chaps, but blimey, this is some great '80s pop. The opening track had me thinking this would sound like a cross between Oingo Boingo and the Smiths, but that notion faded quickly as the album went on. They have a cool, optimistic sound. Wikipedia calls it "sophisti-pop" which is funny but seems fitting. Nowhere near as bright and synthy as the usual '80s fare, but I think that works to their advantage, as it doesn't sound so dated. At times, this even reminded me of acts like Beach House and Tame Impala, real hipster stuff. I really dig this album. Favorite tracks: Bonny, Goodbye Lucille #1, Desire As. Album art: Hell yeah. A soft British pop band dressed in tough guy jackets and paying homage to Steve McQueen. I'm pleasantly surprised to learn that the woman featured is actually in the band! Keyboards and some vocals, like a Vicki St. Elmo. The jackets are cool, the motorcycle is cool, the fog, the barbed wire fence, everything is cool. Steve McQueen is cool. This band is really cool. 4/5

omg, SOOO 1985. that was not a particularly good year for music, as i recall. not a favorite.

I could see myself getting into this to some extent, but something about it feels, I don't know... empty?

I'm very sad that I haven't heard about this album until now. I'm getting pretty strong smiths vibes and kapput-era Destroyer (which is my favorite album of all time, so I'm pretty happy about this). The guitars are so crisp on this album, really kind of fresh and refreshing sounding. The melodies are absolute jams, that sometimes go in strange directions that I didn't expect at all, so I was kept on my toes. I feel like bands like War on Drugs and other modern synth rock/pop really encapsulate this same sound, but I found that this album was surprisingly more forward thinking, experimental and interesting than modern synthpop. There's something so smooth about these songs that make them extremely listenable despite throwing in experimental-isms throughout the album. This is definitely going on my "listen again" list.

A ghostly yet warm experience of beautiful storytelling. Some ambitious and catchy songs. However, latter half of the album develops into a cringey 80s sitcom dozefest.

Have this one on vinyl. A fan obviously. I'm a sucker for most British sophistipop. Love the Thomas Dolby production. Very crisp and three dimensional. Sounds great on headphones. So many nice touches in the arrangements throughout. The banjo on Faron Young may be my favorite use of banjo in all of recorded music. The more I listen to this the more details I enjoy.
