Reviews (page 5 of 8)
People rlly slamming this one but it’s fairly solid imo, good one lads
One Tree Hill core. Idk it was fine
The whole album was in build up to 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?' and the rest was short and unnoticeable. Also it does that one fucking thing with the silence and then music, just cut it out, adds nothing.
Not a huge fan but it was listenable enough. 3*
Soft rock, ça doit être indépendant uk probablement. Bon son, bonne production mais riend de plus 3
Solid 3 nearly 4
Alright… Radiohead ripoff.
3/5 close but no
Not bad and the singer has a good voice, but it is quite boring.
Pretty good rock and roll. Singers voice was nice. I would neither restart or skip this song if it came up in some automatic playlist.
A good album and my nostalgic heart wanted to give it a 4, but I can't say it is one that excites me so it will remain a 3.
Best lekkere rustige rock
Pretty relaxed rock vibes
Another turn of the millenium britpop album! I will say that this one’s slightly better than average. Decently enjoyable, even if it is totally derivative.
This is the sort of album that is likely to improve on repeated plays. On the first pass, however, it felt like a steady walk along even ground with few discernible landmark until late on elevation added some interest.
I don’t want to be rude, but I’m getting a horrendous backlog of reviews to finish and I can’t afford to spend hours listening and writing up my innermost detailed thoughts on each one. “The Man Who”, released by Travis at the turn of the 21st century, seems to fit the bill as one I can get away with writing very little about. Why? Because it’s just fine. Not great, not dreadful, just fine. Most of the songs here are world-weary, self-pitying ballads, and they’re delivered capably if with a shrugging nonchalance. There are transparent homages to Radiohead (especially echoing Yorke’s vocals at the climax of “As You Are”) but at least they’re not transparent homages to Oasis. Can you imagine? In the end, it goes on much too long and the shtick wears a little thin, but there’s perfectly decent songwriting at work in “The Man Who”. Favourites: “Writing to Reach You”, “Driftwood”, “The Last Laugh of the Laughter”, “Why Does It Always Rain On Me”. Oh, and the only other thing to add is that because I am a man of a certain age, I spent many a car journey or afternoon at home hearing “Why Does It Always Rain On Me” being played on the radio: four, five, six years old. I misheard the song’s central lyric as “is it because I died when I was seventeen”, and stand by my conviction that it is a better lyric. It would have brought a bit of a dark, surreal edge to an overall fairly staid album. Think about it.
Decent tunes
Listened Before? No Album Art: 2/5 (could very well be a Christian rock cover) So far this album is pretty much as I expected. Soft alt-rock leaning in the indie direction. Lead vocalist has a nice and crisp voice, so I'll give him that. The music itself is fine, if at times a little boring. I enjoy As You Are. Very nice production with good vocal layering during the outro. I had this backgrounded while writing documents and doing other crap at work. I enjoyed the noise, but never really stopped and said "what was that?" I think overall, this is a pretty album with a melancholy feel to it. Production is clean as is the singer and instrumental. I feel like this is a high 3 / 5 for me, only because I don't think I could pick out a single song from here. Added to Library? No Songs Added to Playlists:
I think 15 year old Jackson would have liked this more. Not very exciting. Not bad.
Pretty good alternative album sounded very typical so nothing really stood out. Had some cool moments of guitar but other than that not too much. I really hated the last song that had the minutes long of silence in the middle and didn't end with anything spectacular.
Never heard of these guys but they got a bomb producer on this one! Halfway through and it's pretty bland britrock. There are some good moments but it's nothing I can see myself coming back to. Let's see how the second half is. I have definitely heard Why Does It Always Rain On Me? probably in some romcom. It's ok just familiar. Really liked She's So Strange. Still just alright britrock. I will say that Godrich did wonders with the production. Very crisp.
Although my streaming service directed me to Sam Cooke's The Man Who Invented Soul (which doesn't sound like a bad time to be had), Travis' The Man Who is a study on how to navigate a vacuum and fill the void. The end of the Britpop era returned its country to its usual drab gray and, as reflected on the album cover, Travis soundtracked the feeling of malaise that seeped through. While not as groundbreaking or as misanthropic, The Man Who gave listeners a peek into what Travis were capable of and what they could possibly be. Favorites: Writing to Reach You, The Fear, As You Are, Driftwood, Why Does It Always Rain on Me?, She's So Strange.
Discount Radiohead is alright. They just feel a bit derivative (especially with the reference to Wonderwall in the first song on this album). I like it, it just doesn’t feel like this belongs on the list. Especially when Radiohead (and presumably Oasis, I haven’t looked) are on here too.
Thought this was some side project of some Radiohead members. It's like Radiohead lite. Might as well listen to Radiohead instead.
Sweet vocals
I liked this at the time, and it was definitely part of the zeitgeist, but it seems a bit bland in retrospect. It's let down by Fran Healy's slightly weak vocals. "Luv" is a bit of a dirge. But some of the songs are undeniably catchy. I actually think the hidden track at the end is probably the strongest on the album.
Super easy listening, either Oasis without the rock or Radiohead without the dread, but decent enough I guess. 6/10
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, has the classics tracks everybody’s heard at some point in their life, it’s very textbook easy listening Favourite song: Track 4 - Driftwood
From my current perspective, I can see that this is a very mediocre, run-of-the-mill album. However, it'll always give me a warm and nostalgic feeling. My first big stadium concert was seeing Travis open for Dido in 2001 in what was then known as Key Arena in Seattle. Such a special memory with my mom and sister and it was a really important experience that opened my eyes to the world of music and concerts. 22 years later and I'm nerding out on an album a day, constantly searching for new music and still going to concerts regularly. *insert happy tear emoji here*
3/5. A nice and simple soft-pop album, with some meaningful lyrics but nothing too crazy. Not bad and might listen to again, just not awesome. There are definitely some personal emotions you can feel through the lyrics which makes it a peaceful listen.
3.4 - With help from the preeminent producer-du-jour Nigel Godrich, Travis briefly cultivated a convincing Radiohead-lite sound that was able to give them a couple breakthrough sadboi hits (e.g. "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?"). But overall this post-breakup record is about as edgy and interesting as a lukewarm bowl of instant mashed potatoes.
2.5/5 not bad just bland and not memorable
Iha jees
3,5! Ihana levy. Karvaana muistona se, kuinka pääsin läpi Radiomafiassa Travis-aiheiseen kilpailuun, mutta toinen osallistuja voitti sen VÄÄRÄLLÄ vastauksella. Siinä jäi meet & greet saamatta.
Okay
Wouldn’t have expected to see Travis on this list. This album is nice, a little too clean and cutesy for my taste but it is elevated for a pop/soft rock album. Like a watered down bubblegummy Radiohead. The instrumentation is quite intricate and gorgeous at times but the lyrics can be a little cringe and the vocals a little dull. Cool nuanced use of country instruments (banjo, slide, harmonica). It’s alright, wish I could give it 2.5 but I’ll bump it 3.
I remember liking Why Does It Always Rain On Me and have heard this band didn’t deserve to be a one-hit wonder. Curious to see how good the whole album is. So far seems like a pretty chill Radiohead. I’m sure they hate that but it’s really the sound they have. Really do enjoy this though. As You Are has a tinge of Across the Universe but in a nice way. Nice solo. Radiohead with some Beatles. Not a bad mix. Not sure it’s held up super well. It’s good but just sounds like late 90’s Brit pop. Nothing super special. Great hit but kind of passable.
Lekker gezappige muziek, throwback naar mijn tienertijd
Basic pop - enjoyed. 3/5
It’s UK week I guess. This was fine, but Slide Show was the only track that really caught my attention.
Hearing this right after Oasis does not do this band any favors but it was not bad! It was a little mopier than I’d like, and some uptempo songs would have been a welcome change, but I thought this had some relatively funky moments with rock solid drumming. I liked the first track and the secret song at the end the most. I would hardly call this essential listening though.
Good!
I had never heard of this band before. Wasn't my favorite, but I probably wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio.
A little bit Radiohead, thankfully not too much. Listenable but not very compelling to me.
It was fine, a little too soft for my tastes. Definitely sounded like something I'd listen to on the radio and then promptly forget. Nothing felt super special about it
ok
It’s nice, melodic and I do like Travis, but I don’t think it’s all that memorable.
I liked the first song, and I liked “Why Does it Always Rain” in high school But the rest of it was a little less exciting than I hoped it would be. Enjoyable enough though
31st May 2023 Listened during a quiet day while sunbathing and rain dodging reading Nick cave. Very inoffensive stuff, CBBC does Radiohead
Fine moody, didn‘t pay that much attention, tho.
Pretty good. Nothing memorable.
The Man Who… sounds like Thom Yorke. 3/5
Some easy listening indie rock from the band that always nearly was massive. The songs have catchy enough melodies, they just couldn't compete the the bland behemoths Coldplay coming up from behind. Great for a love lorn teen. Best Tracks: Writing To Reach You; Driftwood; Why Does It Always Rain On Me?
Decent solid album
3.75
Best goed te doen, al heeft het ook iets een beetje lijzigs.
Sucesión de buenas canciones en forma de pop/rock. Voz suave y, en ocasiones, sonido eléctrico, distorsionado y con algo de fuerza
I liked this album. never heard it before. some pretty classic early 2000s (1999) rock
wasn't sure what to expect here but i was pleasantly surprised. Good album. Sounded like radiohead to me on a few tracks.
Not my kind of emo music. Although I do remember having "Why Does it Always Rain on Me" on my mp3 player in middle school.
OKish rock/pop album. Best track is Why Does It Always Rain On Me?. Don't need to listen again, but wouldn't be annoyed if I stumbled over it it playing anywhere. 3/5
Only listened to the first portion of it. Wasn't really in the mood for this type of music.
nice variety or songs, but not my thing
Kinda generic but very calming
My biggest take away from this album is that the fake ending on albums is an annoying gimmick. I'm sure it means a ton to the people in Glasgow. Again with the synths Jesus.
Good example of late 90s acoustic indie rock. Writing just to reach you, and why does it always rain on me were the twonhitboff this album. Melodic, soulful lyrics, with acoustic guitar, overall a good album
Poor Travis, they got caught up in the horror that is the Coldplay world, the image and plaintive tone of Fran Healy being lost amidst the bizarre popularity of that music. Coldplay's greatest claim to fame being that they made Ed Sheeran possible, there go and chew on that. There are some good moments here, Fran's got one way of writing, and it's all here, very personal lyrics, floating verses with a slight half step shift for the chorus. The opener sets the template, ditto As You Are. Driftwood is quite a song, the imagery and symbolism nicely sustained to the key refrain, drifting, likes to drift does Fran. Which leads to being rained on. If you do that thing and imagine you've never heard it before, c'mon it works. My brother in law was at Glastonbury when they played it in their pomp and he said it was just the perfect Pommy singalong, as only they can, he said the entire audience was just swept up with it, the chorus is perfect. Good record.
It sounds nice but it does go on a bit and I'm just not that sad.
mid, I liked why does it always rain on me
From the opening notes, I was telling myself I was not going to invoke the obvious similarities between the vocalist and Thom Yorke. I mean, you've got the voice you've got, it's not your fault you bear a striking resemblance to another — massively recognizable — artist. But as the album played, I was struck by the fact that, as adept as the band is, and as impressive a singer the singer is, the material never really rose to the occasion. And the reliance on a lyric that, in the end, isn't that strong, on repeat, began to wear. It happened more than once. The "what's a wonderwall anyway?" line would have been more alluring if they progressed it and didn't keep returning to it. Another was "Why does it always rain on me? Is it because I lied when I was seventeen?" Had he taken that somewhere else on subsequent visits to the chorus, that might have been interesting. OK, so now I'm thinking I'm the better songwriter. I guess my point is, these guys seem like they were too easily satisfied. This could have been way more entertaining. Instead, yeah, it's a lot like Radiohead light. Sorry.
Pretty, but a little too safe for my tastes.
I feel this singer could have won Australian idol... or any of the singing competitions. He just has that sound to him that so many of them do. Not my thing, but not the worst album we've heard.
Catchy and melodic, if stylistically a little mopey and one note. A pleasant listen, but ultimately fairly forgettable. Fave Songs: As You Are, Luv, She's So Strange, Writing to Reach You, Why Does It Always Rain on Me?, Slide Show/Blue Flashing Light
I've never heard of Travis before. Apparently they are a soft rock/alt rock band from Scotland. Basically, these guys sound like Scotland's answer to Coldplay or Oasis. Their sound consists of jangly guitars with piano accompaniment. Their music has a tendency to be quite bland, as is the norm with this era of alt rock. Nothing wrong with it, it just blends in with the thousands of other bands that were doing the same thing at the same time. Overall, this was a good album. Perfectly average. The best song on the album was the hidden track at the end of the album called Blue Flashing Light. They really turned up the energy on this one (maybe they had to, given the fact they were singing about domestic violence). Nonetheless, it stood out ahead of the rest for sure! The rest kind of blended together. I enjoyed today's listen, but don't know if I will actively seek it out again. Favourite songs: Blue Flashing Light (*hidden track*), Driftwood, Why Does it Always Rain on Me?, Turn Least favourite songs: The Last of the Laughter 3/5
Por lo general me gusta bastante la onda media emo/britpop/edgy, y claramente es el caso de este disco. Ni los junaba a estos Travis pero vibie mucho. Siento como que tiene cosas de Elliott Smith y Blur. 6/10
Listened on a train in Ireland. Pretty decent. Nothing remarkable but also nothing abhorrent.
This is one of those albums that is good, but not exciting. There are a couple of songs that really stand out the rest are fine. Why Does it Always Rain on Me is the best song on the album...if the rest were like this one we'd have a winner! 2.5/5
Sounds like a poor man’s Radiohead
Gives me unplugged radiohead vibes. Quite nice. Pretty chill music. To me it's calming. But after a while you "get it"
Pretty typical sad boy alternative stuff. Easy on the ears, but nothing spectacular.
Britpop suave. Ni fu ni fa.
Some songs slap but mostly slower and repetitive (Taylor) - 3.6/5
скучновато. я тот самый популярный их хорошо знаю и он мне тоже в итоге надоел)
Blast from the past. But I can’t get over the fact that someone I knew from school was so obsessed with Travis that they wrote the lyrics all round their room. Bad memories.
If I had heard this in high school, probably would’ve liked it way more.
"The Man Who" made a bummer album
This was better than I expected. Some good songs, not too much filler. Enjoyed it.
My wife's uncle, who is from Glasgow and now lives in Manchester, seems to love all Scottish bands including Travis. I can see the appeal - all their singles (Writing to Reach You, Driftwood, Turn, Why Does it Always Rain on Me?) came flooding back to memory and got me toe-tapping. It's not a masterpiece or anything and like the rest of the bands and sound that was brewing overseas at the time (e.g., Keane, Snow Patrol, Coldplay) it's a bit watery. But they did a good job with sad rock/pop on this one. A solid 3.5 but after just listening to the Joshua Tree and rating it a 4, I can't rate this album as highly.
Yet another Britpop album. It is ok. I really like Why Does It Always Rain on Me? and Turn.
Weird album. I was taken aback that it wasn't pop punk, which is what my brain thought Travis was... It was good, but not great. I think I wouldn't enjoy it on return listens, but it was fine background music. 3/5
radiohead x coldplay x everyone else
Okay this is like valid
Sometimes they think they are Radiohead But this is a mixup They are also imitating oasis a lot understandably
Mlako
A few of the tracks stood out but in general too slow for me
Nice mellow album. Why does it always rain on me is a highlight but nothing else stands out too much
OK, 3
Good, but not great record. Some major standouts but the rest feels just kind of under-developed in a way. Quick tangent: there's something about the recording on this that dates it as 1998-2000. Sounds just like the recording and mix of Muse's Showbiz, VAST's debut album, Days of the New, etc. Something about the compression ratio of the vocals, the drum mix, or something.
It's hard to have a strong opinion about this one. There are a lot of really pretty songs on this one and its hard to get mad about that but some tunes do lack a little bit of substance. They can't all be singles but you also don't expect filler on a record with ten tracks.
What if The Bends had no teeth?
Favourite Song: Driftwood One for the Karaoke: Why Does It Always Rain On Me? One for the Car: Why Does It Always Rain On Me? Why Does It Alway Rain On Me love looks like a really good time.
Good
Another band I've known of for ages, but never listened to any of their work. This album was OK, even if it strayed into Coldplay and then Radiohead territory at times.
Some mid sadboi music
Pretty decent Scottish fare
Pretty nice at times, pretty boring at others. Nice voice that goes with the music, and i like the mood of the whole album.
kinda white lol was scared to play it without headphones
Dank , dreary and depressing. A solo exploration of what it was like to be of an age where the crushing realisation of responsibility was approaching. Not my thing but appreciated the fragile beauty of the melodies.
Not exactly a unique sound, because it sounds like Radioheard and other bands, but I did really like it. 3/5
3/5 it was alright, some catchy songs but nothin crazy
I should call her
Super chill album
Surprisingly good almost-post-rock songs.
Alright background music
sounds like late 90s nonsense.
Nothing stood out while listening to this album at all. I always respect the addition of bonus tracks though. Not a bad album, but I don’t see myself listening to anything from it again. Favourite song: Driftwood??
It’s ok. A bit samey.
first listen great singer, i feel like there's U2 and Thom Yorke influence here, but ultimately songs not terribly interesting
Not annoying at the slightest and was very pleasant. Wasn't a bad song on here either. Just felt a bit cliche musically as there were a few instances where I've heard others do better. I also don't feel a favourite from two listens.
Look, it's softcock stuff but it's great.
This was a new album to me, and although there wasn't much about it that stood out for me, it was quite enjoyable for an afternoon listen.
This was fine, but I was just whelmed. Nothing much for me to take away from this one as I heard it today.
This is fine. Pleasant enough. But every song kind of sounds the same. It's fine.
Rock. Suave, melódico.
kinda pretty
Wasn’t bad at all. Nothing truly stood out to me tho but I heard the sadness in all the tracks and it felt very unique.
Better than expected turn of the millennium soft rock. 3.5
Feels like it would be a good backing track to a coming of age film you enjoy and then forget about.
This started pretty strongly, and As You Are in particular was great. However it was a bit derivative and after a while it just lost momentum
Turn and Why Does it always rain on me are both still great songs. The rest isn't close to as good as I remembered it. Generous 3 star.
It's Oasis without the bite, Blur without the cleverness. All of the weaknesses of Thom Yorke's vocals with none of the strengths of his songwriting or instrumentation. It's a nice album. But it's nothing to write home about.
Travis- the overt shaman with the pipes. Pretty enjoyable for a slow day
A nice and soft album
Most songs sound the same.
Melancholy. Let me feeling meh.
Грустная музыка в дождь
Pretty good album. I enjoy the chill energy of a lot of their music. I knew "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" coming into this and it still is my favorite from the album. "Driftwood" and "Writing To Reach You" were also highlights of this album. Though I enjoyed the style and the album as a whole it really wasn't anything too special.
Soothing, but not boring. Very pleasant, very very pleasant. I will have to listen again and see if it grows on me more because it might.
Four huge, brilliant and emotive singles underpin this album. There are well written Beatlesque songs amongst the slow burning emotional album tracks, but overall I'm left feeling downbeat and slightly bored. This was genuinely everywhere in the UK at the end of the 90s and was an antidote to Oasis, with whom they toured, for sure, but I'm not going to voluntarily choose to listen to Travis.
Not sure how this made the list. Not as bad as many would have you believe but not great. Nice chord progressions but how much of someone else’s self-pity can you take?
3,5
There are some “nice” songs on here. Just a full album of this pace and tone gets pretty miserable. Interesting to see it’s preColdplay, they maybe get extra credit for that. What’s frustrating though, is that last hidden track: almost telling us what we could have won. If the rest of the album had just a few more moments of interest and energy it could be something I could really get behind.
I actually liked this one.
At the time of release, I'd kind of dismissed Travis as sitting comfortably in the sweet spot between Radiohead's High and Dry & Fake Plastic Trees. Yes, they're still fairly undemanding, but Fran's lyrics with subversive nods to Oasis (twice) and Beck suggest an edge I'd missed entirely before. Writing to Reach You packs a yearning in the chord progression of the chorus that now feels like the most poignant nostalgia. We've all aged 23 years since this came out, but sometimes it can feel like we jumped the decades overnight. I will be coming back here.
Great sound. Fun to listen to. The lyrics feels sincere, but unfortunately like written sincerely by a 17-year-old.
Lite trevligt ändå men blir lite väl lidelsefullt.
Nice enough but nothing to wrtie home about
Melodic, melancholic balladry, a few good songs here and there. Nothing special, nothing to hate. Standout Tracks: Writing to Reach You, Driftwood, Why Does It Always Rain on Me?
I used to play the hell out of this back in 1999 when it came out - produced by Nigel Godrich, famous for producing Radiohead, and you could see the influence he had on their sound. The NME at the time accused them of going Dad Rock after their rockier debut but it certainly worked for them, especially after the heaven's opened during their Glastonbury performance of 'Why does It Always Rain On Me'. This was their commercial peak and some of it does still stand up - Writing to Reach You nicked the Wonderwall chord sequence as made it sound like something from The Bends. Driftwood is still a pleasant listen - Turn was overplayed at the time and a one word chorus (replicated in later songs Sing, Side and probably others) is lazy. The Fear and As You Are are the best of the album tracks, as well as hidden track Blue Flashing Light (probably the best thing on here) which deals with domestic abuse and sounds a lot more raw, more akin to their first album. It was quite nice to revisit this album and remember being 17 again - I'll certainly stick a few tracks in future playlists. Best thing about this album, along with Coldplay, Muse etc was pushing Radiohead to freak out and make Kid A!
Not bad as far as this type of music goes
kinda bland but you can hear how Radiohead evolved on this
Alright but not impressive
Róleg mánudagsplata. Alveg þokkaleg í heild. Why does it always rain on me er vanmetið lag. Fór beinustu leið á Who hurt you playlistann.
It's a "Pop"-Version of a Radiohead album. Little bit trivia. (5/10) FT: Why Does It Always Rain On Me
04/12/22
Good relaxing album
Really solid album here - strong songwriting and gorgeous production. Hard to complain. I hear a Beatles influence in a lot of the songs (“As You Are” sounds a lot like “Across the Universe”). Even more so, a lot of these songs sound like The Bends-era Radiohead, which makes sense because Radiohead’s producer, Nigel Godrich, produced this album. Still, I don’t see Travis as a knockoff as much as I see them carrying the mantle of 90’s British guitar rock that Radiohead mostly abandoned by the time this album came out. (Technically these guys are Scottish but, you know.) This album is excellent, melodic mood music. I don’t think it’s quite in classic territory but I like it!
I hear SO much Radiohead crossover here, which I guess ties in to the late 90's era, and I'm not mad about it. It just feels a little more... soft? If we're going for angsty 90s rock I kind of want it to punch me in the face sometimes. There's definitely a lot of Beatles influence, especially in "As you are"... jai guru deva om, amirite?
What if Coldplay were a little... well... warmer? What if Radiohead were a little more accessible? These are the incredibly deep questions that Travis asks, and then unceremoniously answers: It would be fine!
Very soft and gentle and a bit boring.
i really liked this album. there were about two songs that were not up my alley but other than that i enjoyed the singing and the music overall.
Nice music, prefer The Invisible Band though.
A pretty good album that sounds kind of derivative. The melodies are generally pretty and memorable. The arrangements a little pedestrian and the vocals are generally beautifully rendered in the same vein as Thom Yorke but without the depth. I found myself often reminded of Andrew Bird. A little too one-trick to rise above a rating of mediocre. 3 🌟
I actually really enjoyed this one. I can see myself giving it a listen again, or possibly exploring more of their catalog. I wish I could give this three and a half stars. It’s not a 4, and I don’t think it’s a 3 either…
3.5 ⭐️ like a secret track, this one was decent enough
1st Song Soft Rock Similar vibes throughout. Not bad, easy listen. Definitely need to be in a certain mood to listen to this album, but it's alright.
A solid 3.4
One of the better post-britpop bands, but tries to sound too much like Thom Yorke. On the first few listens, everything blends in. But with beautiful melodies that test their boundaries, it's dynamic enough to maintain interest without coming off as annoying. I believe with a more engaging vocalist, the songs would reach closer to their potential. But I really like it, if not for anything other than a pretty melancholy that juxtaposes the abrasive and monotonous alt rock, pop punk, and nu metal so prevalent in the US.
Eine britische Band…Das Album setzt sich, obschon kurz nach dem battle of britpop aufgenommen, erfreulich davon ab und vermeidet dessen unerträgliche Plattheiten. Noch nicht ganz 4 Sterne.
3, yea it was decent if a bit forgettable.
Very mediocre
This was a fun album. I enjoyed the mellow, soothing vocals. Very solid accompanying music that didn’t interfere, but was perfectly complimentary.
Writing to Reach You remains the best song Travis have recorded. Album is fine but was never one of my favourite britpop albums of this period
I'm not convinced that Travis really does anything noteworthy enough to elevate them above their peers to the point of being included in this list, but I will say that I enjoyed this more than I expected based on my prior experience with them. The songs here are very pleasant if somewhat meat and potatoes alt-rock.
A deserved classic from the 1990's. Beautiful songs, an album that's worth another listen time and time again
Get a Coldplay/Snow Patrol vibe from this. Just not as good as them in my opinion. Favourite song is the hidden track after "Slide Show".
Average.
Fine, pleasant, subdued. I imagine this is one of those records that was huge overseas but never really got as big in the states. I liked some songs, but I'm a little hesitant to say this belongs on this list. Favorite tracks: "Writing to Reach You", "Turn"
i should like this. there's no reason i should not like it. it's perfectly inoffensive, and generally nice enough to hear...and i kind of don't like it at all - maybe for that reason. i had it on while i was working, and when i came back here to review it, realized i had just about no memory of anything on it. it just...didn't make an impression. on the one hand, that's definitely the mark of an album that's not awful (see: anthony & the johnsons' i am a bird now), but it's very much also not the mark of a great (or even noticeably good) album
I would have loved this in HS or college, but now it is a bit one dimensional in terms of its alt-rock sentimentality. Nothing bad but not a whole lot of depth here either. Some tracks better than others.
Суперсредне
Easy-listening soft-rock. Good production and has some things going for it to make it slightly less generic, but not enough for me to really want to listen to it.
Britpop suave. Ni fu ni fa.
Pretty good, a little boring. Needed to give it a second listen to really appreciate it.
It was fine. Pretty generic “Oasis-type” 90s rock.
Reminds me of Keane
Could be a 4 but i would have to listen to it a few more times
It was kind of plain, I stopped 75% thru and listened to radiohead.
more generic british rock
A sad and angsty little album that has some good moments but just doesn't do enough differently to rate any better than "yeah, that was good, I guess".
Another nice background listen.
Just a middle of the road good album. Nothing really to complain about. Maybe the last song being 10 minutes long and having to wait for like 4 or 5 minutes of silence? Was kind of annoying to me lol.
Catchy jangly songs are quite good. Other songs are too dull
The last track turned me off, with its language and dead air, but I liked multiple songs on this album, like Driftwood, and it was pretty good ambient music for coloring. It gave me a proto-Muse/Coldplay vibe.
Redelijk standaard popmuziek. Gewoon erg toegankelijke liedjes, maar ook weer niks bijzonders. De stem van de zanger kan wel gaan vervelen als je een heel album moet luisteren. Mijn favoriet is "Driftwood" en "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?". ***
A bit of nostalgia bias here
Seemed like pretty bog standard light alterna-pop. Competent but too soft to have much impact. A group like Kings of Convenience shows how this kind of thing can be done to better effect.
It’s… nice. Playing fast and loose with the definition of “essential” here, I think.
ну прям реально конец 90 по ощущениям музыкальным лично у меня. Почему-то напомнило севедж гарден и такие вот группы расцвета того же периода
Couple nice songs, but many of them are just insipid and interminably overlong
This is just generic rock. Not really special at all and as average as it comes. 6/10.
I wouldn't normally listen to these type of songs but it was appropriate yesterday
It's a decent melancholic and harmonious Pop-Rock record, though Fran Healy's vocals are a bit too breathy and dramatic at times. To be honest, I keep thinking of Radiohead when listening to this. They do almost everything better that Travis tries on here. The Man Who does truly shine on "Writing To Reach You", "Driftwoord" and "Why Does It Always Rain On Me". 3/5.
very alt british sound. kind of an oasis clone but i think a little more nuanced. Luv is a good track.
It's a pretty good sadboy album like something from Elliott Smith. I don't particularly like it over a lot of other albums, but I think it is at least worthy of being on this list. I also enjoy the addition of the secret track, even though with streaming services the idea of a secret track is dead. I may come back to this one because the vocalist has a nice voice and a pretty good range as well. The instrumentation is pretty complex and compliments the vocals well. Highlights: 1, and 4.
Production on this is superb. Aiming for a more downtempo and laid-back sound, it is immensely good at utilizing reverb, delay, and mixing to bring out these feelings with the songwriting. You can hear influence from Radiohead especially, which had released the monumental OK Computer just two years earlier. This is for the best, though, as it never fully feels like it's trying to copy or attempt to become Radiohead, but dialing Travis' own sound through this new alt rock lens. It is worth noting that it slightly more pop-y, though more in structure than sound. I quite enjoyed this one overall. Nice and relaxing record with the stylings of the day that I like. Can be compared to Radiohead, Coldplay, and Muse without explicitly being any one of them.
Given my obsession with NME and Q magazine during my Australian high school tenure, I was familiar with a few of the singles from this album so I would have been surprised if I was surprised by the overall tone of this album and… I was not surprised. I enjoyed listening to this album a few times over the past 24 hours and could easily see myself putting it on if we need some chill music in the lounge room. I didn’t make the time to sink my teeth into the history of the album so that my be a bit of my downfall as well. Great songwriting, melodies and overall musicianship.
The band that paved the way for Coldplay is not exactly a selling point in my book! However, I gave this album a couple of listens to give it a fair shake, and deemed it not bad but also not very exciting. A couple songs are better than the rest such as Writing To Reach You, Driftwood, and Why Does It Always Rain on Me. Not sure I could go above a 3 on this one.
Some nice Travis songs here but nothing that gets my dick hard.
Takes me back. Some nice nostalgia, few decent songs I hadn't heard. Haven't really heard of these guys since this album.
Generic brit-pop with trite lyrics. It had a nice atmosphere and the vocal performance was pretty solid, but overall this was a fairly bland album that probably only british people love. 5/10
Boring but listenable. 6
Good but slow
Interesting sound, but didn't do much to grab me after the first couple of tracks. Need to listen again though
Very chill. Didn’t wow me though.
Chill, James style tunes with lots of ghost strokes and great production. Good music for reading
Soft rock, easy listening
good album, reminds me a lot of coldplay though
-I liked when "As You Are" got intense and there was a nice scream. And then there was some nice guitar solo-bridgey stuff. -"Driftwood" was pleasant -Why is "Slideshow" silent for like a huge gap in the middle??? I like the second half but I'm not gonna wait for like 3 minutes mid song??? -Why are the bonus tracks way better so far? "Green Behind The Ears" and "Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah" are actually good -Nice Cover of "Be My Baby" -Idk it was just boring
Nothing special but nice sound and good level in general
Easy to listen to instrumentals. Was ok on vocals. Listened to an extra cut and liked it better
Glad to be introduced to this band and this album. Some really great stuff on this one. Musically interesting, good lyrics, nice mix of styles. I like that the influences seem to be eclectic (at least they are to my ear). And I LOVED reading this from the Wiki entry on the band: "The band's name comes from the character Travis Henderson (played by Harry Dean Stanton) from the film Paris, Texas (1984)." Great actor creating a great character in a great film. That is wicked cool.
Some good songwriting but a bit lightweight for my tastes
A cantiga mais memorável foi a The last Laugh of Laughter. Nota: 4,5/10 19/05/2024
Tenía olvidado varias canciones de ellos. A pesar de tener buenas, no es un gran álbum, pero lo disfruté. Nota: 3.5 PD: No seleccione "Why Does Is Always Is Rain On Me?" porque todavía no supero su saturación en las radios.
Not bad at all, pretty nice background music. A good 3.5 but rounded down because it's completely unmemorable and I already forgot what it sounded like.
A very nice album. Good choruses and nice voice, kinda sounds like a memory, if that makes any sense. Longer than it should be - I'll never get the "let's make 4 minutes of this song straight just complete silence" but oh well Saved: Writing To Reach You, Driftwood
Better than most britpop
3.5. Rustig en aangenaam
Melancholische Britpop die mij wel kan bekoren voor een nummertje of 2, maar een heel album is te veel van het goeie.
This album wasn't great, but not bad either 3/5 decent kind of gloomy brit pop
Mellow, but only a couple songs really notable.
Het is het waard om eens te beluisteren en dat vaker te doen
I think I enjoyed this quite a bit, but I didn’t take any notes and I don’t quite remember what I liked. I guess not quite memorable enough for a 4 but deserves a relisten.
Didn’t love didn’t hate. Was cute
couple songs were catchy but nothing special
Totally fine. Big Keane Energy
Is this the Verve and Oasis clone?
Algunas buenas rolas, pero les falta redondear. 3.5
What if radiohead was mediocre and generally uninteresting? Travis. She's So Strange and Rain On Me are strong, but the album doesn't carry enough passion and interest to raise it into a 4 or 5.
Kind of perfect with morning coffee
Guilty pleasure. Love a bit of Travis. It's nothing groundbreaking though is it Me: "Mum can we listen to some Coldplay" Mum: "No we have Coldplay at home" Coldplay at home:
can hear nigel godrich on this one big time
Wondering if Radiohead came out first
Sad and solid
Lettere sølle musik, Why does it always rain on me
good indie rock, reminds me of the nineties
Taas taustamusaa, mutta ihan chilliä sellaista
Talented guy but boring record. Don’t quite understand it’s legacy appeal.
Actually quite good. I like this guy’s vocals better than Rufus Wainwright, but not as much as Tim Booth’s, both of whom he sounds like.
One of those pop/post-pop albums that's pleasant enough to listen to, but ten minutes later, you can't really recall anything about it or what it sounds like. A bit generic for this list. Best track: Why Does It Always Rain On Me?
Surprisingly devastating, and got steadily more so as it played. I'm surprised that reviews seem to focus on the front end of the record as the strong part: My experience is exactly the opposite. Granted, there are hints of more interesting sonics in those first few songs. Between that and the hidden track, it's hard to escape the thought that the band was capable of much more. The end result is fully enjoyable, if not quite satisfying.
3 stars
File under: Yet another random one hit wonder brit band.
yeah, "Why Does it Always Rain On Me?" is cute and all. but it's not enough to save the rest of the album from mediocrity...
TravASS. 3/10
travis-ty
Listened to this and I forgot everything about it the second it ended. Kind of like men in black. I guess the take away is that the singer is kinda horny? Not sure who listens to this in purpose.
instead of this i’d give any Teenage Bottlerocket album a listen. i’m guessing they won’t be featured on this lsit, and they’re worthy of some attention imo
One of the more bland albums I've heard from this list. It is incredibly generic soft rock. It is like if someone asked AI to write a soft-rock album from 1999. The hidden track at the end is best song on the album.
Look, it’s fine. It’s not anything to write home about though is it? Poor old Travis, all they wanted was to ride in on Radiohead’s coattails only for Coldplay & Keane to beat them in the wuss acoustic market. Good effort lads, my Mum quite liked you back in the day.
Meh. Whiny late 90s moaning. Not my cup of tea.
I guess the songs don't sound bad? And the lyrics are kinda funny (mostly in a bad way).
If we’re going to do some kind of Scottish indie-ish rock can we please have Idlewild’s The Remote Part instead of this? Travis is like some bizarre transitional period between Radiohead and Coldplay instead we could be listening to You Held the World in Your Arms or A Modern Way of Letting Go and having a good time
Better than Coldplay
Quite pleasant to start with but soon dulled by the sugarsweet sound. Why does it always rain on me is a great hit though.
I get why some people would like it but I think it's so so so boring.
It sounds like someone stripped all the interesting elements of Radiohead then found a way to slow down time while you listened to an album. It feels so long. 2/5
Post brit-pop alternative rock band from Scotland. Not particularly interesting and the musicianship isn't impressive. The better songs sound like Radiohead lite. What's the point of a hidden track?
't is geen Suede
This was okay, not super my thing
Incredibly bland. Inoffensive. A CD your mum would have in the car. Some pleasant enough single but very forgettable filler.
It's a bit beige, isn't it? Apparently it spent 11 weeks at No.1 in the UK album charts!! No accounting for taste!!
decent but didn’t blow me away
Honestly maybe the most damning thing is that I like all three singles when I hear them on their own, like on the radio or in a playlist or something, but I feel worse about them in the general melange of the album. It’s all just in this sort of soft grey post-Britpop melange, quite boring and without much to really hold onto, lyrically or musically or anything elselly. The motherland really let me down with this one being such a hit.
Doux, calme, un peu mélodieux... mais il manque de l'énergie et je m'endors
Dapperingly boring. Competently played, but the songs - and the album - end up being a mash-up of Keane, less memorable Beatles ballads, Stereophonics and Turin Brakes. Maybe I'll enjoy this when I've retired and can spend my days sipping wine and looking wistfully in the distance while recalling the past to my bored grandchildren who can't leave because that would mean no presents from me for Christmas and their birthdays. I very much doubt it, though.
Like a slightly less annoying Nickelback
Ret generisk og sangerens stemme er som negle ned af en tavle for mig
Meh, 1 good song and the rest doesn't even go near it.
Overhyped
This is just pretty boring. It's the C- of high school woodshop. It sands off the corners and edges of alt rock and punk, but doesn't want to put on the finish of glam or pop. It wants character, but not unique character. Just some character.
A late 90's British rock album if I've ever heard one. Right down to the hidden final track. Funny that this didnt really cross over to the US until Keane a few years later.
An odd addition to the list. I guess it captured the state of radio soft rock around the millennium.
not bad, but boring
Some very nice pop with influences from other bands though
Didn’t do much for me.
Meh. Boring and whiny, trying and failing to be Radiohead.
I went to see Travis live around 2001. They were competent but a bit dull. However, the support act was absolutely fire. So, it's a shame that Turin Brakes' The Optimist LP isn't on this list and The Man Who is. Because that Turin Brakes album moves within the same genre and SLAPS while this album just whimpers. PS Driftwood is still lovely.
Brit-rock without any of the positives of Brit-rock.
Interesting album, very rocky and fun.
Boring ass album. Sometimes I really wonder what were the intentions of the author of this list.
zzz
Soft and straightforward rock with breathy vocals that reminds me of Radiohead and Coldplay in parts. Not bad but a bit boring and nothing really stands out. I'd heard "Why Does it Always Rain on Me?" before but had no idea which band it was.
I guess I’ll start with my expectations. Who knows?? Wha you do expect from someone named Travis, and a photo of some guy presumably named Travis as accompaniment? That’s right, some guy in a yearbook cause you went to middle school with Travis. And that’s exactly what you get here. The dude you know likes Radiohead, you think. I listened to this while I ran and caught myself thinking of math problems for fun just to pass the time. That’s not good. It’s not that this is bad. It’s just so far in the background that you forget it’s there. So much so that you find yourself wanting to put on music while it’s playing. I think I like it. It’s so inoffensive and okay that it might be first in its class as a forgettable indie rock record with guitar, vocals, piano, and some YouTube tutorial chord changes. Well done. A solid 1/2 stars. A double yellow line in the road.
well the final track is a surprise, but the rest of it is mostly forgettable and kinda sounds like Coldplay, who I do not have any particular love for.
Meh....
Yikes. They seem to be in their 'Radiohead but a lot suckier' era here. If we don't get the Wilson Phillips debut album before this project is over in lieu of this uninspired depressing snooze fest, I'm calling the manager. The hidden track was decent.
Radiohead meets U2.
