I very much appreciated this early Rod Stewart. I am not very familiar (it at all) with the originals of the covers, so there was nothing loss for me in comparison. It all sounded pretty stinking good to me.
I think it's interesting that my first exposure to Rod Stewart was probably Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? at the age of 10. Or maybe Hot Legs, the year prior. I can imagine that songs like that felt like a huge betrayal to fans of these earlier records. I've since filled in a lot of the gaps but I'd not heard any of these particular songs except those I knew by other artists (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Elton John). A lot of the songs have a country tinge to them that I wasn't sure would work for me but they absolutely do. I feel lucky that Rod Stewart became a singer instead of a professional footballer.
This album was ok but these were not my favorite versions of the cover tunes and the original songs didn’t really grab me. There are Rod Stewart albums that I like a lot more than this.

Rod Stewart singing a bunch of covers? Really? We all need to hear this before we die? I mean, COME ON! I don't need to hear the demo tape he was desperately peddling to try and get a record deal. I have no beef with Rod, and I like his raspy vocals, so I can sit through it. But this one makes me seriously question the integrity of this list and its list makers. Bad judgement call here.

Having a broader grading scale available here on 1001 albums would be nice. "Gasoline Alley" by Rod Stewart is better than 3, but not good enough for a 4. Oh no, the first world problems. I'm sorry Rod, you're getting a 1-star rating. His voice is intriguing. As if he had a great party yesterday and now he's singing with a huge hangover.

This album is inoffensive but doesn’t stand out in any way. The faux country aspect is a bit puzzling but Rod Stewart had enough grit in his voice to pull it off. However, there’s just not much here.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the softer numbers, but overall, I still feel like Rod Stewart is pretty bland and whitewashed blues.

Early Rod Stewart (solo, with Faces, and with Jeff Beck Group) is really underrated. I feel like this isn't as strong of an album compared to some of his other early ones, but still a pretty decent album, especially for blue-eyed soul. Fun fact; the largest concert ever in the Americas was a Rod Stewart concert in 1994.

Solid album, but nothing special to my ears. I feels like a lot of the classic/southern rock albums are blending together. I really like Rod Stewart's voice. It's talented singing meets pack a day smoker. Kinda reminds me of Brent Mydland's singing.
Love Rod Stewart's guitar sound. Its I funny that he has people from The Faces play on this album, but wanted it to be under his solo name
Rod's raspy voice is so underrated I feel like. The guitar also slaps on some of the early songs. I start to lose interest in some of these songs towards the end but overall I enjoyed it.
I'll never forgive Rod Stewart for the '80s and '90s.
You get a really interesting sound in this album. Good bass work, fiddle, mandolin, almost screeching vocals, soulful piano, bouncing country guitars, and clambering drums. Everything on this album is just fun. I can sit and enjoy it or throw it on in the background. 4/5 Favorites: It's All Over Now, My Way of Giving, Cut Across Shorty Least Favorites: Lady Day
Compared to Every Picture Tells a Story less than 12 months later this feels weak and unfocused.

Some country, some rockabilly and some songs that I'd be shocked if they weren't written by Yusuf / Cat Stevens. Rod Stewart is one of the best at covering songs and making them sound and feel like his.

Listened Before? N Ah, sounds of my childhood. Rod Stewart was playing constantly on my dad's stereo in the late 80s and Early 90s. I have seen him live multiple times, but I've never listened to this album in full. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It sounds a lot like his early stuff with Faces. Highly recommended for fans of his. Great album. A little less rocking than I remembered. Very much centered around folk. I think his voice works better on more rocking stuff, but this is still a very good album. Stellar cast of musicians, especially Ron Wood and Ian McLagan. 7/10
He has a very scratchy voice and I didn't particularly enjoy it.
Didn't think I liked Rod Stewart, turns out I do! The bluegrass, piano, guitar, funky number shoot it up in stars, the plain rock sends it down. Hobo and Lady day are at the top for me but plenty to like on this one.
If you enjoy Rod Stewart, you will enjoy this effort as his solo debut. That being said, it doesn't have some of the polish that his more "staying" and iconic songs hold in later efforts.

I like rod stewart and this album was kinda below par with what I would expect from him. It felt pretty bluesy rock throughout most of the album. I didn’t know these were covers but that always kinda knocks the album down with less creativity. His first solo album is good and had some nice songs and some of his later albums did but this one was a blend of pretty average songs. 6.3/10
Ended up enjoying more than I thought that I would.
I've had a visceral dislike of Rod Stewart since I was a kid. I just never liked the look of him nor the sound of his voice. A lot of his songs have grown on me over the years, but I'm still not completely over it. This album was pleasant to listen to, but I'm still not won over by any of it either. Even among Rod Stewart work, this feels like lesser R-stew.
Perfectly serviceable rock of a homespun variety that flourished in this era. Although the electric instrumentation features, acoustic guitars, mandolins and fiddles are to the fore. Stewart's voice is the ideal match for this kind of country-ish, folk-ish music; it has a rough-hewn, woody quality that blends in nicely. The highlight for me is one of the more upbeat numbers, 'Cut Across Shorty', though the title track is done sensitively, as is 'Lady Day'. It all lands very comfortably but there's an aspect of weightlessness that hamstrings Gasoline Alley; pretty enough, but fails to leave a lasting impression.
Don’t hate it, but good grief a lot of these songs sound exactly the damn same. And I’m prettttttty sure Rod Stewart was never a down on his luck depression area New Yorker, though it sure seems as if he’s trying to make the soundtrack for warming your hands over a tin drum fire. I’d rather listen to “Da Ya Think I’m sexy?” Even though I had no idea it was spelled this way until I looked it up just now, and I’m never going to forget this.

This kind of feels like I am listening to Steven Tyler. Its a fine album, even thrilling in parts. I just think its not my thing.
Gasoline Alley calls forward, at least in tone, to Stewart’s later American Songbook recordings. If you’re a fan of his you’ll like it, if not you may find it slow going.
I am vaguely familiar with his work, I couldn’t name any of his biggest hits, but i think I could recognize them by hearing them. This is definitely not my type of music. I can understand why someone might enjoy his work, but I do not. I am willing to check out more of his music in the future.

This is my least favorite album I’ve heard on here so far. Most songs go on for too long and his voice is irritating.
It’s the kind of MOR seventies rock I can never get too excited about, no matter how much effort Raspy Rod puts into it. And again, it’s a shame that it’s two-thirds covers. I genuinely think Gasoline Alley and Jo's Lament, two of his own compositions, are among the strongest tunes on the album. Those and the final track. 2.5
Rod Stewart is the most boring guy ever. If you put any old guy with blonde scraggly hair in front of me and told me it's Rod Stewart, I wouldn't even ask any questions. One of the best-selling artists of all time (250 million records sold!), but ask any person on the street to name a Rod Stewart album at gunpoint and 9 times out of 10 they'd tell you to shoot them in the head. He's the type of guy to talk to his wife about "the weather we're having" while eating dry spaghetti. The man's Wikipedia page is longer than the constitution, but when I googled "Rod Stewart fun facts", the first thing that came up was that "He was car-jacked once". Wow. Incredible. 2/5. Better than that fucking god awful Faces album I had about a month ago.

What a voice! Again, not a go to artist of mine which made it a pleasent surprise to discover this album had none of the cheesiness is Rod Stewarts more know tracks. There are some very rocking nearly punk tracks on here along with some soulful balladeering
I'm sure he is a sound guy. But his albums that I've listened to so far have been so dull. And his voice is horrible.

This reminds me of Carole King's Tapestry with the heartbreak songwriting. It's so tender, with the lyrical sensitivity of country music. I love it, especially the songs Jo's Lament and the title track.

Enjoyed the blue grass kind of feel
Best Song: It's All Over Now. Mostly because of the piano. Worst Song: Only A Hobo. Only a shmuck would be suckered into feeling sympathy for this grade school, sickly sweet attempt at a parable. Special thanks to Rod for explicitly reminding us that this is a "sad song". Might have missed it otherwise. Overall: Rod Stewart seems determined to convince the listener that he's a good person. I don't know that he isn't, but its his determinedness that makes him a little suspect. Musically, it's that same "shout whisper" that I expect, on top of some otherwise uninteresting classic rock.

Is it the strings and mandolin? It's probably the strings and mandolin. It doesn't break the ceiling that British blues groups do, but as a solo effort Gasoline Alley is eminently authentic and doesn't have a weak tune. The mixing is strange, but Stewart has a voice that is impossible to lose. Covers and originals blend perfectly, a concert developing out of acoustic guitar and barroom piano.

This is now the 4th (I think) album I've gotten that features Rod Stewart and it confirms my opinion of him. He just isn't that great of a vocalist. Technically he is sound, but he just doesn't have a powerful voice that is needed for these tunes. For example, on the 2nd track of the album It's All Over Now, his vocals just sound out of place on this. He should be belting out those lyrics but he doesn't and it suffers.
Rod is amazing! He manages to sound like a jazz, folk, blues, and rock musician at the same time. I loved the range of songs on this album.

I’ve never given much time to Rod Stewart, the music he has charted with has never really appealed to me so when this landed on my playlist I was fairly ambivalent towards it. It’s a lot better than I had given credit for, and I can now see why People rate him as an artist. I still haven’t truly changed my mind about his chart music, but this album as an individual piece was an interesting and enjoyable Listen
68/100: This album sounds about as good as it's album art: super grainy and hurriedly put together. A lot of the melodies are pretty nice, but the overall production quality seems shockingly low. I probably won't listen to this again, it just doesn't stand out nearly enough to be worth a second listen.

Once again the list authors confound me as to certain selections pop up on this list. I'm a big fan of what Rod did with the Faces. His early solo stuff is amazing. This album? Not even his best. Why does it belong on this list then? No major hits, no groundbreaking output that inspired future musicians. What then? From the book, the author puts more effort on the follow up to this album - Every Picture Tells a Story which is phenomenal and belongs on a list such as this. Treating an album such as this as an album that precedes and kind of lays the groundwork for a (masterpiece) is a weak handed excuse to push a work that isn't thaaaat awesome. 2.5/5.
Fun fact, Steve Jones (from the Sex Pistols) mentioned in his book he liked this album. Me, I liked a couple of songs in there a lot. Title track, Gasoline Alley is strongest of the bunch, a track I'd gladly listen to over again. I also enjoyed "It's all over now". Generally the guitar/rock sounding songs were better than the sort of folky stuff mixed in. As the album went on, and particularly the second half, felt much weaker. I didn't get much out of it. So overall feels like a mediocre album with some really great tracks thrown in. Therefore...3 stars for Mr Stewart.

Not familiar with this. Different to what I expected. I suspect some people love this. I didn't.
Good old Rodders. There's some good tunes on here and I see the appeal but it's not for me. For some reason I personally find his voice very annoying. I realise that this doesn't detract from the quality of the album but it ruins it for me.

Stewart at his most soulful and before he become so calculated. From what we know now, the earnestness can seem like a put-on, but maybe that's just one beign jaded. Four very good songs – title cut, "County Comfort," "My Way of Giving," and "Lady Day" – the soulful ones basically. Much else feels disposable, replacement level rock of the era. His tone and phrasing are authentic, as the long-ago RS review had it, and well-judged, but few – if any – singers have had a voice better suited to rock. And to his credit, he works it well and versatilely and in many different styles. Perhaps that makes him a bit too chameleon-like but here the effect is coherent because of the marterial and mostly effective.

I went many years thinking I didn’t like Rod Stewart because I hate Sweet Caroline, and only a few years ago found out it’s actually Neil Diamond that I don’t like. Another reason I thought I didn’t like him was because I don’t like the song Mandy, but again came to realise my dislike is for Barry Manilow. So let’s give Rod his fair chance! Songs I already know: none Favourite after listening: Only A Hobo, Country Comfort Overall: 5/10 This was very middle of the road old-man-rock music. It doesn’t try anything interesting, but also doesn’t do anything terribly. It’s the kind of album where you just stop paying attention and forget you’re listening to anything. You’re not anticipating the end so so can stop listening, but at the same time you’re also not invested while listening. It’s very fitting that the main colour on the album is beige, because this album could not be more neutral. Side note, the two tracks I thought were best are covers of Bob Dylan and Elton John, so he shined brightest for me when performing music where somebody else took the wheel with the actual writing.

At their core, most of these songs are alright. Unfortunately, they tend to be about twice as long as they need to be (see It’s All Over Now), crammed too full with Americana textures (see the title track), or there’s just too much Rod Stewart (most of the tracks).

A little torn here, not the biggest Rod Stewart fan...but I do like Gasoline Alley, Lady Day...and the cover of Dylan's Only a Hobo but You're My Girl feels like it wants to be on a different album.

Rod Stewart is a good singer and his sond are good. Of this album I like "My way of giving".
Boring, pedestrian, uninteresting boogie-woogie/blues rock that is made nearly unlistenable by Rod's horrible voice. Honestly only made it halfway through before I gave up.

I dunno, that 70’s blues rock sound still does it for me. And it helps that Rod’s still largely backed behind the Faces, who are a great band. The less plugged-in tracks don’t do much for me, but when Ronnie kicks in his iconic tone, this is a good time. B-

I would have rated almost all of the songs in this album 3 or 4 stars, with the majority being 3. Still, of the 4s, I love the rock n' roll style and the strong themes. Plus, I have a soft spot for good musicians who don't have "perfect" voices.
I'd put as much effort into this review as he put into this album, but I'm not sure that that would give us even a single letter. Used to Love Her is a standard for bog standard pub cover bands is the nicest thing I can say about this album.

Fuck Rod Stewart
It's been a while since I've been served up a good old rock and roll album on here, and this was such a refreshing change. This album is vintage Rod, laid back, warm and bluesy. It's a joy to listen to. Stewart is in perfect voice and has an outstanding band backing him up, including all of his mates from the Faces. I mean really, this sounds like a Faces album. No complaints here. Gorgeous sound, with some top notch guitar and mandolin work. Fave Songs: Gasoline Alley, It's All Over Now, Jo's Lament, My Way of Giving, You're My Girl (I Don't Want to Discuss It), Cut Across Shorty
Not bad! Just not good either. This album is just there, not really doing much at all. It’s perfectly fine but why would you listen to this album when you can listen to literally anything else?

-Generally solid rock+ piano with a nice blues feel -Generally solid tracks with good energy dynamics (maybe a little low for my taste) up until "Cut Across Shorty" -"Cut Across Shorty" is probably my favorite track on the album. Really high energy with a great guitar/piano riff/jam -Right after "Cut Across Shorty," there was "Lady Day" and Jo's Lament" which were both mega boring and slow -Luckily the album finished off well on "You're My Girl (I Don't Want To Discuss It)," which is second best to "Cut Across Shorty" -Probably not as strong as the other Rod Stewart album I had, "Every Picture Tells A Story" -Probably a sketchy 4

With a name like Rod Stewart, a raspy voice, and a rowdy personality, Rod Stewart is very rock-'n'-roll. I discovered him as a soft-rock figure, however. Kinda like Barry Manilow and Elton John. I discovered his popular live videos in Youtube such as his versions of "I Don't Wanna Talk About It" and "Sailing". This album is his second. Early Rod Stewart. Bland and generic Rod Stewart. To be fair, I didn't really expect anything surprising when I saw that cover. I expected it to be boring, and it is. Country-folk covers of "rock-'n'-roll" (according to critics) tracks. A few interesting instrumental feats here and there. Rod's raspy voice. I didn't find it captivating at all. It's dull, it's uninteresting, and I could die without listening to this album.
Stewart’s voice is a great rock voice, for about half a song, then it starts to grate.
Title track aside, there’s not much that stands out on this perfectly fine bluesy rock record tinged with folk. You have to really dig Stewart’s voice to love this more, though.

Honestly, I didn't know that Rod Stewart is so folky/country. That's not a bad thing though. I enjoyed the album. Songwriting, singing and musicianship are very solid. It's not an album I'd play on repeat though.

Rod Stewart, the man of many genres, had humble beginnings as a roots rock guy with a tinge of soul. It's not very good. It's like, he's definitely performing rock music, but it has no oomf to it. It's hard to describe but I find the whole sound so mundane and unoriginal. He does barely anything interesting with the music he's writing. There's a few good songs on here, I'll give him that, but Rod Stewart does not inspire much in the rock field.
I always think of Rod Stewart as the cheesy "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" and slightly less cheesy "Maggie May" singer, so it's always surprising to hear his more bluesy early stuff. This album isn't anything too special but it was pretty easy to listen to. 3.5 stars

These are nice friendly songs. Rod has a great rock voice.
There is something about this album that makes me want to get drunk. Would be a fine album to put on during a good drinking session with friends. Has an easygoing earthy soulfulness to it that feels very natural and genuine.
I get why people like Rod Stewart but he doesn't do much for me. It's good though.

Classic Rod
Not an album I would listen to again. It is not bad but just a bit boring. Rod Stewart made much better albums in the seventies.

"Gasoline Alley" world almost as a companion piece of the discography of Rod Stewart band, Faces. It has contributions of almost every member in the band at the time, but the result is a little more folk and roots rock then the general Faces sound. It's a mix of Stewarts own compositions mixed with interestingly arranged covers of rock and roll classics like "It's All Over Now" and "Country Comfort". It's a competent record, as most things Stewart did at the time, but not as historical for pop music as some would sugest.
Largely forgettable, I'm sure there's a better rod Stewart album out there, his voice us very unique
Rollicking! I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did, but either Stewart's vocals have grown on me, or they are a particularly good fit here (or both).

Nunca había escuchado un disco de Rod Stewart y fue una grata sorpresa. Muchas melodías agradables, arreglos sencillos pero bien ubicados y letras introspectivas hacen de este un muy buen disco.
Sabía que debía haber algún álbum de Rod Stewart, pero se me hace curioso que sea este (de entre los 32 discos de estudio que tiene) porque, aunque es muy representativo de su primera época, no tiene más que quizá una de sus canciones realmente populares: Country Comfort (que por cierto es de Elton John). El disco en general me gusta mucho, pero imagino que debe ser un gusto adquirido porque esa voz rasposa que tiene desde hace 50 años no a cualquiera, y lo mismo el acompañamiento con mandolinas, pero creo que es justo lo que lo hace especial. Lo que no sabía a detalle es que en realidad casi todo son covers… Y de hecho así es en un montón de su discografía.

I usually love Rod Stewart, but this album really didn’t do it for me.

Same folky sound you attribute to Stewart. There's a retrospective feel to this, which is unexpected for a 1970 album by a guy who has made only his second solo album. The writers on this thing are epic though, Ronnie Wood, Bobby and Shirley Womack, Bob Dylan, and Elton John/Bernie Taupin. So cool! The album moves and feels like a compilation. That comes at the cost of cohesiveness, but it's still a great listen and great collaborations.
It was alright
It's fine. Just doesn't really evoke any reactions in me. Meat and potatoes classic rock.

I've heard a few Rod Stewart songs before, but never really got into his music. The old blues/classic rock ballads are dated, uninteresting, and quite frankly do nothing for me. While the music is nice and performed well, it's just a bit boring for my taste.
2nd Solo album for post faces Sir Roderick. A lovely mix of raucous blues and Mandolin tinged songs that touch his personal experiences. Lovely version of Womack & Womack's "It's All Over Now" which I think is better than the 'Stones version. Ronnie Woods guitar throughout this album is spot on and some lovely stuff throughout. Outstanding tracks the aforementioned "It's all over now" "Cut Across Shorty" and the eponymous "Gasoline Alley"

A very middle-of-the-road album - it seems like Rod Stewart was made to play in the background of a shop? My top pick is 'Country Comfort' but upon looking it up, it's an Elton John original (who did it way better). I have nothing good to say, nothing bad to say.

Bit dull and dated
So schnell ich das hier abhandeln wollte, lässt sich Roddy dann doch nicht abwickeln. Wirken die meisten Songs gerade zu Anfang wie eine gute Barband am Freitag Abend, wurdest im Verlauf dann doch intensiver. Schon diese traurig-schönen langsamen Nummern („Only A Hobo“, „Country Comfort“) sind es wert, dem Album sicher noch so manches Airplay gönnen. Vor allem auf entspannt sonnige Autofahrten. Was „Cut Across Shorty“ anstellt, belegt, warum es sich manchmal lohnt, zu warten. Könner 3.1
Kurz überlegt, so beim ersten Song, ob er wohl auch mit 18 im Düsseldorf rumrannte. Oder uns wohl im weiteren Verlauf den britischen Bruce Springsteen geben will. Aber nichts davon manifestiert sich danach besonders. Statt dessen satte Produktion (die Drums und Gitarren - fantastisch aufgenommen, oder?), schöne Mischung aus stones-ig groovendem Bluesrock (Gasoline Alley (Kunststück, Ronnie Wood hört man natürlich raus) It’s all over now), Balladen, und weiterer, teilweise einfach sehr stilistischer ausgeborgt und gut abgehangener Weisheit (Country Comfort) und, ja wie soll man das nennen, prä-Americana? Mit den Eigenkompositionen gegen Ende (Lady Day, Jo‘s Lament) wurd‘s dann für meinen Geschmack bisschen zu folkig, aber dieses präzise groovende You‘re My Girl reißt auch das wieder raus. Schwankt um die 3,5 - am Ende isses Stewarts für mich an manchen Stellen leicht zu rauchig/harzig klingende Stimme, die noch höhere Weihen verhindert. Aber echt nur knapp.
I love his music. This is a really easy listen and gives a glimpse of how good is songwriting was, and would become. Good stuff.

Didn’t like his voice
This sounds less like a cohesive album, and more like Rod Stewart throwing various songs and genres at the wall to see what sticks. I've never been a huge fan of Rod Stewart, this isn't doing much to change that. Favorite track: "You're My Girl"

Decent album. Decent covers, solid mix of instruments. Nothing exciting but nothing offensive.

When Rod was nearing his peak. His love of folk shines through here and his obviously good taste. Backing band is Faces. Just a great 70's folk/rock album. Best Tracks: Gasoline Alley; Country Comfort; Cut Across Shorty
The heavier tracks are really good. Not here for the chilled out stuff though, it doesn't suit his voice. I also don't see the point of the tracks where you can't hear him over the instrumentation, but maybe that was cool back in the day.

Solid rhythm and blues
Rod Stewart's second album is a rock album from the 70's with a collection of covers & originals. The music is beautiful, but I can't help to feel like it's background music.

Alright but kind of forgettable. Best song was a Dylan cover and I probably would enjoy the original more.
Classic Rod Stewart and 70s
Really good album. Only a hit or two, but even the non-hits are catchy and well written. Good road trip tunes.
It’s okay folky rock. The story songs wear a bit thin after the first few tracks. Nothing super memorable or great to latch on to.
lyrics and vocals weren't that great but the instruments were really varied and nice to listen to. Nothing really here really sticks out to me as great, like if I wanted this albums vibe I could listen to people who have done it better.
Average album
My perception of Rod Stewart has always been that he makes really boring music, this album has changed that perception somewhat as I liked it much more than I expected. But still not something I'm going to come back to

1. Gasoline Alley- A simple song about going home. Has some kind of country influences to my ears. 2. It's All Over Now- I like this one a little better. It reminds me of something that would be played at a honky tonk bar. It's a long song though! 3. Only a Hobo- I think this is a Bob Dylan cover. Very depressing song. 4. My Way of Giving- Another country-rock type song. Not very memorable imo. 5. Country Comfort- Kind of reminds me of an Elton John song (not sure if this came first). I guess it's just a song about life in the country. Not bad- nice to listen to. Lyrically better than some others so far, I think. I think the end drags on just a little bit though 6. Cut Across Shorty- A good old story-type country song. Like some others on this album, I think it suffers from being too long. 7. Lady Day- Nice little shorter song. Pretty background guitar. 8. Jo's Lament- A sad song. A slow song. One of the better ones on the album I think. 9. You're My Girl- Upbeat closer to the album. Lyrics haven't aged very well. I don't think this is a bad album, but I would never listen to it in my leisure time. If someone else is listening to it in the background, sure. It's not very memorable to me- it's Rod's first album ever so it makes sense.

I can't stand Rod Stewart. The stuff with Jeff Beck was saved by strong musicianship and writing, but this one is mostly just Rod crooning cover songs.
Favourite Song: Country Comfort
A nice arrangement of Dylan's Only a Hobo is the standout alongside Country Comforts. Hopefully there are other Rod albums in this as his has better albums.

A decent album. Stewart has an undeniably distinctive voice and takes control of all the songs. However, a full album of his froggy rasp is a bit jarring. Best songs: Country Comfort & Cut Across Shorty

Turns out I hate Rod Stewart. There's just too much going on in this. Someone just randomly blows a whistle in the second track. Like really lays into it. Feels like whoever mixed it felt like the instruments were too loud, so they just turned up the vocal track.
