Reviews (page 6 of 7)
What the hell, Rod? Guy's got a great voice, straining at the seams to get something out, and then the rest of the music just does not have that same urgency. Just put this guy in a mid-90s post hardcore band and you've got yourself a winner. Instead it's this kind of standard southern rock type stuff that's just boring.
It's like Bob Dylan but shitter
It was ok but I have pretty much forgotten it already. I kinda like Rod though, he’s really into trains and building city models, that’s cool
Gasoline Alley by Rod Stewart left me wondering how it made this list. Yes, Stewart’s voice is unmistakably great, but the album itself leans heavily on fairly standard covers and a handful of original songs that don’t land at all. Overall, it’s a boring, pedestrian and just very dull. Musically, it just never gets out of first gear, and I won’t be revisiting it any time soon. Favourite track: The cover of It’s All Over Now is genuinely enjoyable. Least favourite track: Most of the album—so much of it just drifts by without impact. Album artwork: At least the cover is nice.
Unnnnfortunately I just really don't vibe that well with it. It has some instrumentation that is cool to my ear in the beginning, and then sparsely throughout, but that's really it.
I honestly didn’t find him as bad here as the Jeff Beck Truth album but Rod Stewart just does not do it for me.
Some of the okayest music ever. EDIT: There is a reason I always listen twice because on my second listen I found this to be without merit.
It was ok. Nothing bad, but nothing particularly great. Standout songs: Its all over now youre my girl
I’m not a fan of Rod Stewart. Listened to the whole thing. Felt like an achievement.
I think the reason I don’t like Rod Stewart is that his singing voice sounds like an old woman. All the covers just make me want to hear the original - or in the case of It’s All Over Now, the original cover. Ronnie’s Wood and Lane are great, as is Kenny Jones on You’re My Girl. There are just very few highlights on this one.
This is now the fourth--and hopefully final?--Rod-Stewart-related album in this collection (including Jeff Beck's "Truth" and Faces' "A Nod Is As Good As a Wink"), which seems like three too many albums filled with his distinctive yet strangely underwhelming vocals. And among those four, this is probably the cellar-dweller of the lot, mainly because of how many forgettable-to-painful cover tunes are included on the album (although the nicely done cover of Dylan's "Only a hobo" does somewhat offset clangers like the cover of Elton John's "Country comfort"). Fine, I suppose, but nothing to write home about or, for that matter, to die over. And his voice is similar enough to Joe Cocker's that I'm once again very frustrated that we get this cornucopia of interchangeable Stewart numbers, and yet not even a little help from our "1001 Albums" friends to get Cocker into our eardrums.
Just can’t get there
Not sure how many blues-rock albums I need to hear before I die, but I’m hoping that this is among the last. Either this list is extraordinary skewed toward 70s rock white guys doing blues impressions (without including their blues predecessors) or it’s just a fluke of the generator. Here’s hoping it’s the latter.
I didn’t realise that this was a partial covers album until Country Comfort and, even then, it was only Bernie Taupin’s tell-tale awkward Bumpkin schtick that gave it away. Stewart and cohort do manage to create a homogenity across the whole thing (nice rhythm section, recorded badly; sloppy slide guitar over folk acoustics), but, listening closer, it is obvious that the songs are by different authors: sometimes sweet, sometimes basic, sometimes clumsy, frequently dumb as a sack of rocks. Stewart’s raspy voice is doesn’t make much sense to me as an interpreter of these different characters, but he certainly gives it a lot of phlegm. 2 This is certainly boring. Whether you think it is ‘pleasant enough’ to compensate for that depends on your enthusiasm for Rod Stewart’s voice, which is the only distinctive feature here. I am not a big fan. Well done on the ugly album cover though. 1.5/5
Nothing says excitement like Rod Stewart playing a bunch of covers.
mid generic 70s rock
dreadful
I really don't like his voice, but eventually the album faded into the background.
Was uplifting and enjoyable but not really my jam.
Ol rodders. On a boring stretch here
La primera cancion me re gusto, la segunda me gusto, y dsp no me gusto nada se volvio country y canciones larguisimas
That voice, eugh.
This was fine. I just think some 70s rock is not for me.
I know Rod Stewart - the hits, the raspy charm - but none of those songs are on this album. Honestly, I’m not sure why Gasoline Alley made the cut for the 1001 Albums list. It’s an album of covers, and while his voice is always distinct, there’s nothing particularly special or groundbreaking here. It just feels like “another Rod Stewart album.” That said, Gasoline Alley is often cited as the album where Stewart really began to blend folk, rock, and soul in a way that defined his early solo sound. It marked the start of his transition from Faces front-man to a solo artist with a unique identity, even if, listening today, it doesn’t fully capture the energy that made him iconic later on.
This would be awesome music if I were in a bar watching a band I’d never heard of. Buuuuuut it’s one of the most popular vocalists of the time and a crack band. In that case, pretty uninspired. I mean, why would you bother covering an Elton John masterpiece a few months after its release to make it more boring?
This one was pretty unremarkable but I didn’t mind the vibe.
Adequate cover versions. Nothing more.
It’s Rod Stewart. You know what you get. It’s fine, but nothing more. Did I need to listen to this before I die? I’m not convinced.
4 What the heck is a gasoline alley
This is a weird album. No song is offensive or pleasing, but they all leave this nagging feeling that they could've been better if they were proper country, folk, rock, or even metal. But even if genres were changed it would probably not go above a 3 for me, as I doubt he'd make it past the first auditions of any tv show with that voice.
It was fine, just not for me.
My opinion on Rod Stewart has always been "my mom likes this guy, but that might be a Filipino thing" during my childhood. First song in and this isn't something my mom would listen to. Then again, my mom follows trends, so let's see. Overall, Rod Stewart gave a mediocre performance with this. There were some good hits, but the entirety of the album is definitely just the middle between the best album ever and not the kind of album I would ever listen to. Not sure why my mom enjoys this artist. Probably the best notable song is the album's title Gasoline Alley...which leads me to believe this album needs to stay in Gasoline alley.
I'm not a Rod Stewart fan. Some of the hits are ok but the rest I can do without.
I probably didn't listen intently enough. I didn't understand what was particularly interesting or enjoyable about this music.
Didn't mind this, a bitta country, a bitta rock. Mid 2s.
This was very beige - not that interesting. Yawn. Somebody needed to give Rod a losenge before he stepped up to the microphone.
Hard to hate, but not easy to like either. Mostly unexceptional.
Rod stewart burgh!!!!
Huh. Blues rock Rod Stewart, 1970. Rod Stewart came into my life in the “If Ya Think I’m Sexy” disco era. I didn’t realize he was a shape-shifter. Plenty of this sounds high quality for the genre, and I even liked a song or two. His scratchy voice bothers me. After 42 minutes, I was relieved when it was over.
Similar to how I feel about Bob Dylan: excellently designed music with fantastic lyrics. I just wish it was sung by someone else.
Not for me
The man has never done much for me musically. Some catchy tunes that certainly got airplay. A lot of attention for all the skirts he chased and models he brought to bed…. kinda like the Donald Trump of Rock and Roll. All hat, no cattle. But man, you will get laid.
Cool that he being an English artists took country music and addded that spice to his album. I hate country music.
I thought the previous Rod offering on this list was alright but this one is a lot more meh!
Generally poor, including the murdering of that Stones song. His voice is awful and very painful to listen to. The album was partly saved by the last track.
It's definitely Rod Stewart, and definitely not his best work.
Lyrics are great but the songs are really lacking because of how few instruments they use
I found this to be pretty vanilla. Rod Stewart obviously has an iconic voice, but I feel like if you've heard him once you've heard all of his songs. None of these really stood out or have stayed with me after listening. I suppose there's a certain "honesty" in his music: no frills, just good ol' soft rock country feels. Ronnie Wood's guitar parts are good, but predictable and kind of bland. It's all well done, but nothing novel or surprising to my ears. Also, the mix on YT Music seems to not be very good, even through my good headphones. Stewart's vocals sound very quiet on most tracks, when really they should be star of the show. Not sure if this is a YT thing or if that is how it was originally mixed, but it made it less pleasurable to listen to.
Whatever
Songs that were too bland for the Faces album.
1.8 Not interesting at all. Maybe Ron was a bit controversial back in the day, shaking his ass in leather pants, but doesnt track for me now. The title track was really shitty
Gasoline Alley starts strong with the gritty title track, but some of the covers, like ‘It’s All Over Now,’ feel like filler and and breaks any momentum the record has
I do like "Every Picture Tells A Story" and I was expecting just more of that, but for some reason this album really got on my nerves. The repetitiveness of some of these songs really drives me crazy and Rod's voice only makes it worse. Not a good time.
Why is this on here? There are Rod Stewart albums that are actually good.
Didn’t care much for this. Like it was fine but nothing special
He sounds so old in this and it’s not super bad, u can just tell
This listen confirmed by general impression of Rod Stewart: He tries VERY hard to be soulful and earnest. When he hit's the mark, it's beautiful, but when he does not - which happens more commonly - the result is some combination of boring and humorous (or "cringe," as the kids would say). I did get a nice little chuckle from "Only a Hobo," which, aside from the unfortunate title and chorus line, might be the best song on the album.
2.5/5 - I don’t think I needed to hear this, because it’s not going to open any new doors on what I think of Rod Stewart. The country-influenced rock and roll is perfectly listenable, but very little surprises here except the funky ending track. Rod sounds like Rod. Rounding down for lame album art.
I do not get this guys appeal. If disco was too gay but actual rock and roll was too complicated. If you didn't get punk but the carpenters where too wholesome? I think the music is so devoid of any emotion and his voice is so grating. Was hoping there was something on the first album that was lost in his actual hits. But nope. Just terrible rod Stewart without anything I could sing along to.
This is a textbook example of nothing special. It could be my 6yo niece singing this and it would be about the same. It's just someone singing average and forgettable songs against average and forgettable music. Another filler album that just happens to be from..... yep, you guessed it - A British artist!
Fine, kind of boring. But I was back after a long day of travel and it would’ve taken a lot more than rock ballads to peak my interest.
Ok. Came into it expecting to give 1 star, and was pleasantly surprised. 2 stars.
I have always kind of hated Rod Stewart. The Sexy business got way out of hand. He was a more marketable raspy-voiced crooner than Tom Waits, and so he sort of stole Tom’s spotlight. (He also made Tom serious bank covering Downtown Train - a cover I actually like, even if the video is stupid.) Small Faces is cool. That AI Ozzy “tribute” he did recently is not.
the fake scot does some fake country presumably from LA.
Nothing can change my hatred for Rod Stewart. Every time his music comes on the radio, I have to turn it off. Terrible voice. Boring music. A bad person (proud of his affairs with groupies). The success of Rod Stewart (look up Guiness book record for biggest concert) shows that something is wrong with the world. And his albums being on this list is even more proof of that. 2 stars because it was not too annoying and there were some good moments when Rod was not singing.
I couldn’t really connect with this one. Rod Stewart’s voice clearly carries emotion, but something about the delivery just didn’t land for me. The whole album felt a bit dated and bland.
Pretty Eh. Didn't find it to be too interesting.
The music of 70-s, that sounds older than even that and not in a good way. Scratchy vocals, very country. I Don't Want to Discuss It instrumentals are kind of cool, but the constant reminders about being the singer's girl is not what I appreciate about early rock 'n' roll era.
no byl... byl...
I enjoy listening to Rod Stewart sometimes, but this album should not be on this list. There is nothing special or outstanding or new or innovative with this one. It's a perfectly ordinary album.
Not an enthusiastic listen. Yet the songs didn’t meet me in the middle, either. Did not find much I wanted to go back and listen to here.
Didn’t know one song and eh on Rod Stewart
Fine just not exactly my vibe -2
Meh.
When i was mid 20's i worked with a lady called Janet who was in her 60's. Janet once felt ill so went to her GP and queued to see the receptionist: when she got to the front she informed them she was having a heart attack and would like to speak to a doctor. That kind of old school lack of fuss deserves respect. On company events when we had to drive somewhere i would always take Janet in my car as neither of us could stomach the rest of the screeching harpies and also we shared a love of music from her generation like the stones and the beatles. Janet loved Rod Stewart, and to be polite i didnt complain, but I will now. This isnt something that stands out in terms of music, song writing or playing. His voice is unique and he seems to have had the right personality for pop but thats its. This is a one star album with a bonus one as a nod to Janet.
Nothing that really grabs you apart from You’re My Girl
I don't know what to do with this. Is this good? Where did this come from in terms of inspiration? What year did this come out? Did this inspire other things? It's not bad sounding at all but it's just kind of sitting there. I don't know where I'd even expect to hear someone playing this. Distinctive voice that does sound good. I guess it makes sense he's a star. Is Gasoline Alley a burger chain? It feels like it should be the name of a burger chain. I wish Young Turks was on this album. That music video has a good wink and a bunch of street dancing. 2 stars.
Started questioning almost instantly if this was genuine. I couldn't guess when this came from. He sounds like he is almost doing a James Brown impression and doing a bunch of almost sounds like some other song songs. A safe album that doesn't do much.
This was fine, but not particularly good. It mixes folk rock and classic rock songs, but most of them feel like they lack passion, maybe because the lyrics are pretty bland.
It’s fine.
Nothing to write home about
This was such a meh album that I don't even remember listening to it. Why is he such a big deal? I dunno. Guess he has a pretty recognisable voice, but I can't for the life of me name a single track he's produced. 2/5
So. Boring.
there's some standard separating the art from the artist with rod stewart, but then there's also the british guy cosplaying as a bluesman thing that he's never quite able to shake. it's pretty good cosplay though
I don't get it
Wasn't expecting much from Rod Stewart Didn't get it either. 4/10
Rod Stewart is incredible but this album is a bore.
Kind of soulful and groovy. Not terrible. Too long of an album.
Lite för mycket boomer-rock för min smak
To me Rod Stewart will always be kind of kitsch. He was all over the (wrong) place when I grew up - I didn’t really like his hits that were overplayed on the radio. And this record is not even that type - it’s not very interesting. I like his contribution in The Faces much more. I appreciate that he has a distinctive voice that everybody can identify in a heartbeat, but this record is kind of dull
I liked the last song.
Not a fan, but it's music that definitely tears apart bars full of middle-aged white people
I appreciate Stewart's career but this didn't click for me
Meh, fine, sounds like something my mum might enjoy.
Probably among the most boring albums I've gotten, with such weird mix to boot, like why did it sound like he was all the way in the back of the mix while the guitars were on the right blarring away? Just a complete meh album but made worse by those things I think, I'd rate it lower but it's more dull than it is irritating
raspy voice but i like it, songs are kinda corny, keeps repeating the title of the song and i don't like it, no variety in tone between songs, overrated
Ikke noget for mig. Kedeligt.
Not a huge fan, I like his later works
2/5
I've never really cared for Rod Stewart's voice & this album did nothing to win me over. best parts were the instruments but even they were pretty flat & 1 dimensional.
Meh. Not my jam.
Not as terrible as I feared. Assumed (obviously, because it's "Rod") that it would be a lot of songs about how many tall blondes he'd boffed. Instead, it's ANOTHER early 70s "white guy does something bluesy" record. Of which this list has far too many examples.
I've put it off for days. It's not as awful as I feared ... but it's not my thing. At all.
What a slog. Grandad always said never trust a man with two first names.
another sip of luke warm water...
Tracks like "You're My Girl" make me sad to give this album a bad rating but it didn't redeem this, otherwise, tedious experience. Why do people like this guy's voice?
Very dull, nothing special, 2 stars. It was a pretty average cover band doing a strange mixture of songs from a variety of styles, all of them bad.
This is such a mediocre album. Nothing good, nothing particularly bad, nothing to write home about. Boring, bland, entirely unmemorable.
I’ve enjoyed both the faces and solo rod Stewart album I’ve had already . This one , while fun didn’t really carve out any space with me and melded more into back ground music . I think I like rods raspier cuts and this didn’t have enough
plodding pub rock, very average
This is what I imagine people who own houseboats listen to
For raspete
This is bad. Rod Stewart is a recognizable name, so I thought it might be good, but it is not. The singing is rough. Lyrics are boring. And the instruments aren't anything noteworthy. The last song ended up saving this from being a completely pointless album, but it's still not good, and not really worth the listen, in my opinion. Favorite Song(s): You're My Girl (I Don't Want to Discuss It)
Like a band playing in the pub on a Tuesday evening, when you'd like them to be slightly quieter so you can chat about the local elections before going out for your regular curry. Why is Rod Stewart a thing again? He's just there?
The more racist Rod Stewart is revealed to be, the less surprising it is that his music is trying this desperately hard to be american
Real bad — “Only a Hobo” was noteworthy in its cringyness
title track amazing rest is boring 2.66
I can hear the influence of Rod on a lot of important artist. An okay album
Gasoline Alley 2.3 It's All Over Now 2.7 Only a Hobo 2.4 My Way of Giving 2.8 Country Comfort 2.8 Cut Across Shorty 2.4 Lady Day 2.3 Jo's Lament 2.1 You're My Girl (I Don't Want to Discuss It) 2.5 Score: 2.477777778
My god, this was a boring album! I understand why the Maggie May album is included on this list, but this one? Totally nondescript
One of the most prominent voices in music. But the music itself on this album doesn't convince me at all. 2,5
Obviously a lot of these albums have some kind of historical significance but based purely on listening enjoyment there are a lot of sub 3 star listens for me.
The Good: We’re going to get rich in with the gasoline we found in the alley… The Bad: Turns out that Mr Steward, nay, Sir Stewart, has fooled us all by replacing the gasoline with water… The Ugly: After having read wikipedia, I can’t unsee the rod in Rod… Well this was a lovely waste of my time. We’ve got Rod, we’ve got Ronnie, and we’ve got loads of mellow cover-songs that would do great in a pub, but I don’t know how they’d go over in a stadium. Not that the music is bad; just that the music is bland most of the time, and in comparison with contemporary artist, not worth my time. So I ask again… why am I being forced to listen to this album? The answer is simple: there really aren’t that many great albums out there! Which is making start to appreciate my favorite albums even more! 2* for effort, and for Ronnie
There's some measure of variety within this album, but not a massive amount. Gasoline Alley was decent but not really my jam. An okay album. 2/5 stars.
Has a very distinctive voice and style does Rod. Not sure it's for me though. Thought the faces album was much better than this. Country comfort was probably the best. Not terrible but won't be back 2.5
Rod the dud on this one. If I'm listening to 1970s Rod Stewart I'll put on the vastly superior "Every Picture Tells a Story".
Rod Stewart's "Gasoline Alley" may fall short as a true country rock album, but it undeniably showcases his remarkable vocal interpretations and emotional depth. While the fusion of genres doesn’t quite hit the mark, tracks like "Maggie May" and the title track reveal his ability to convey heartfelt storytelling through song. Perhaps, reflecting on this project, Rod should consider fully embracing the country genre in a future album, as his voice and charismatic style could resonate beautifully with the classic roots of country music.
its not as bad as everyone says, but its also not nearly as good as any other rock album. Its Nickleback but if Nickleback was never catchy or sounded that good or had a crazy guitar riff or had any pazaz. Nickleback is good. This isn't very good.
Albumi #140, 07.02.2025 Rod Stewartin kakkosalbumi vuodelta 1970 koostuu puoliksi omista kappaleista ja puoliksi covereista. Melko folktyyppinen albumi ei kelpo kappaleistaan huolimatta mene omien suosikkialbumien joukkoon.
Ok, good album, but I probably won't listen to it again. It was weird to hear rod Stewart hotel like a wolf in the middle of a song.
This album's alright. Great instrument work, but not really a fan of Rod's voice sometimes. There were high moments in this album but not enough to be honest, felt like there was some definite filler
In a smokey, dimly lit bar, this would be great. Anywhere else it's bland. 2/5
Meh
A guy who allegedly wears women’s underwear sing some covers. No thanks, Hot Rod!
Painfully average. Fav tracks: Gasoline Alley, Only A Hobo 2.5/5
Eh tyckte första låten var väldigt bra men sen bara normal gubb rock
If you like getting drunk in bars that have jukeboxes and a lot of old men hanging around, you can't miss with choosing any song from this album. It mixes well with spilled beer, peanut shells, and inconsequential arguments.
Honestly grating, irritating. Tolerable for a few minutes. I can't imagine listening to this album regularly.
Rod Stewart has made plenty of fun music but, not for the first time, the albums that appear on this list feature basically none of them. Gasoline Alley isn't up to much, it doesn't reflect what he's all about, and the best track is a good cover of an Elton John song. 2.
Yeah, this is a bit naff. I still can't get over that Faces album that was full of energy, and we've had not much else decent from him at all. This is a 2/5, can't say there was one song on it that I particularly liked.
Well, I listened to it and now I can move on with my life.
I mean, I like his body, I think he’s sexy — I have no problem with him knowing that. I’d also let him know that this album about put me to sleep while driving.
Didn't really get much out of this one
I love his voice. But not this album.
This just shows that you may have as many talented songwriters on your album, that doesn't mean you'll be able to do these songs any good.
I understand that he's got quite the name for himself, but his music just isn't essential to anyone.
Rod Stewart doing roots rock. Among the things I didn't need, here's a big one!
The best one was Jo's Lament, and if I'm choosing a lament, that tells you something. Not an album that's aged amazingly, featuring some of the blandest attempts I've heard at the Indian-inspired trend in pop at this time. Sorry Rod x
okay. this had literally no impact on my life. but i didn’t hate it.
so he was trying to be bob dylan or…?
01) Gasoline Alley - 6,0 02) It's All Over Now - 5,5 03) Only a Hobo - 6,0 04) My Way of Giving - 6,0 05) Country Comfort - 6,0 06) Cut Across Shorty - 5,5 07) Lady Day - 5,0 08) Jo's Lament - 5,0 09) You're My Girl (I Don't Want to Discuss It) - 5,5 TOTAL: 5,61 (56/100) Current ranking: 305/355 Rod Stewart sings covers of other people's songs. And it's one of the 1001 albums we have to hear? Ok, two or three songs are his, so maybe it's because of those? I know I'd rather hear a bunch of albums that most likely aren't on this list.
So inoffensive it turns back to offensive.
Rod Stewart’s music is not my cuppa. I gave this album a chance but, let’s admit it, I was immediately bored to death. Like many other reviewers here I find that this album has not aged well.
Rod Stewart has an iconic voice that I don't like. It sounds scratchy and strained. I wasn't much interested in this album as I listened through. It passed me by until Rod started repeating "You're my girl" at the end of the album a bunch. That part annoyed me.
not-so-great balls of fire
There's a little more Rod Stewart on this list than I was expecting (including Faces). I'd probably call this album the superfluous one. It's fine, I'm not mad I heard it, but I didn't really need to. In other news, pictures of a young Rod Stewart always crack me up for some reason. He does not sound like he was ever young. https://icongallery.com/artists/rod-stewart/
To be fair, rod Stewart sucks, that being said it's still moderately listenable
Between the scratchy voice, uninteresting sound, and soul rock with little soul to be found, everything here comes off as too bland to make it worth a listen. There’s still some musicality to it and an audience for it, but anything worthwhile comes later in his career. The biggest credit this album gets is starting the career for an overall mediocre musician.
Competent covers, not bad, not great, just okay. I've never been a fan of Rod's 70s era work. I much prefer his music once he gets to the 80s, and the more interesting soundscapes with CAMOUFLAGE and OUT OF ORDER being peak Rod Stewart.
Horribly mediocre
One of the most prominent boomer voices in music. Can't sing, it's just raspy.
This album sucks on so many levels. Firstly, a few of the songs are mixed in such a way that the vocals are absolutely buried, so you feel like you’re both listening to someone mumbling in a crowded room, but somehow how they’re also raspily shouting at you. The more “rocking” songs have no punch. The more folky/country/blues songs have no soul. Every single song is repetitive as all get out. Die happy having never listened to this.
it’s fine
Pre-listening thoughts: I feel like I’ve heard the name Rod Stewart before but I could not tell you any of his songs off the top of my head. Ohh wait this is the do ya think I’m sexy guy. Hmmm ok Post/during listening thoughts: man these songs are like fine but his voice is like taking a cheese grater to my brain. I think there are better classic rock singers and better classic rock songs. 4/10 unremarkable DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no go listen to any radio station right now and you’ll hear this but better Fav tracks: It’s all over now, my way of giving Least fav tracks: gasoline alley
Ok 2.5
Couldn't really get on with this one, a bit of a wash!
Not a very big Rod Stewart fan, so this was a bit of a slog for me.
There are three good-ish songs on this album and they're all written by Stewart (Gasoline Alley, Lady Day, Jo's Lament). Otherwise it's all less-than-the-original covers and bland rockisms, occasionally great instrumentation (you're my girl). Doesn't quite cut it.
I was not a fan back in the 70s, and I'm still not.
2nd Rod Stewart in 7 days. Starting to hate his voice. Fantasizing about finding him on the streets of Britain and giving him a cough drop.
Not bad, not great
On his own, Rod Stewart is just not that good. The music of the album is good (entirely due to members of Faces that contributed, Rod only played guitar on one song) but Stewart's reaching, raspy voice feels very forced. I was glad to listen to confirm that, but this would be one of the albums I'd have replaced when updating the list
oh wow more forgettable blues rock singer songwriter bullshit. who could've seen it coming.
Surprised I enjoyed his vocals, but the album itself is pretty dull. Maybe perfect for dad rock of the day, but extremely forgettable & bland.
I didn't quite get the vibe of this album. Musically, it sounded like Rod wanted to go country, but, his voice just couldn't match it?? There's nothing wrong with this, but not much right...
why does rod stewart have two albums on this list
How do you expect to attract new listeners when you're practically an unknown and the opening track of your album is basically filler? "Gasoline Alley" should have been hidden away in the middle of Side 2, or better still, languishing right at the very end where it doesn't matter what is playing because your bottle of wine is nearing empty by then. So, the album truly gets started with a reasonable honky-tonk cover of "It's All Over Now", if you like that sort of thing. This is still wrong, because a safe cover should be placed in Track 4, Side 1, or Track 1, Side 2, not presented as the lead-off faster tempo "wake up and listen to me" track. Now, at this point I want to state that proper electric guitar was already present in many great albums of 1970 and even earlier, so why are my ears being assaulted primarily by bar-room piano and insipid Telecaster (possibly) noodling? Use a Les Paul and turn up the gain!!! Give it some oomph! "Only a Hobo" is an early example of trying to Americanise music that is clearly Scottish folk at heart (Stewart is English but clearly WANTS to be Scottish). I prefer "vagabond" here, as "jaikey" is just too regional and Rod might not have actually known that word at the ripe old age of only 25. "My Way of Giving" is closer to what I was expecting from this LP. Whilst not game-changing in any way, the Hammond mixes well with busy drumming to deliver a strong pub tune for robust men. Let's see what Side 2 brings... "Country Comfort" is more of the same, but plays on Rod the Lad's gentle side. I know that title from somewhere, but the melody is not familiar. Perhaps it's one of those songs that is famous just for being famous. Whatever the case, it seems a bit to wizened a message for a boy not long out of his teens to be delivering. A little saturation in the guitar solo is nice, but that's still not enough to save the overall production. I have no idea what "Cut Across Shorty" means, and I'm pretty sure neither does Rod. Some good-old boy, rollicking, banjo-picking (with no banjo in sight), fiddle-fiddling, southern rock 'n' roll at work here, which will please bearded men. Consistency is key on this album, so "Lady Day" and "Jo's Lament" are more of the same, but "You're My Girl" steps firmly into Rolling Stones album filler territory without the Jagger/Richards song-writing skills and their usual crassness, but sung by a much better singer than Mick. On that note, it's obvious that Rod's got a great voice for heavy rock and 'crying in your beer' ballads; I'll give him that. It's just that a whiskyfied voice is enough to make a rock album great, so Gasoline Alley won't be permanently entering my record collection.
Nothing offensive but I just don’t get why it’s so popular.
Nice try. You can't fool me. This is Faces doing a country album. There's only so much Rod Stewart I can take, and I got well overloaded in the 90s with that All For One nonsense. I've still not recovered.
i didnt enjoy the listen. i know generation is random, but man am i really getting sick of these dad rock albums selected so close to each day. no disrespect, but to me, these are a drag to listen to; a snoozefest most of the time. i didnt particularly enjoy any of the songs here unfortunately, but i guess the drums in some of the songs sounded nice. its meh, but i wanted the album to end throughout my listen. 2 personal favs:
Overall not very good. It has a FEW moments but even then it's nothing special. I generally don't really care for Stewart and this one doesn't even have any of his songs that I kinda dig.
"You're My Girl" is a cool song. The only thing that might improve it would be removing Rod Steward from the equation (maybe no vocals at all??). Not a Rod Stewart fan.
Alright. It’s a fun bluesey jam album. It’s nothing remarkable, but it’s not insufferable. Easy listening but it’s not gonna change anyone’s life. C teir.
Not a great debut.
I like Rod’s voice and all that but covers albums don’t count. I get that Rod couldn’t write songs, but get yourself a songwriter if you want to go solo
Kind of like if Springsteen had nothing interesting to write about
Бля, лучше бы реально бензина нюхал, может хотя бы стоунер метал придумал 4/10
Big nope all the way through. This is the first album I had to skip most tracks forward at the halfway point. I'll give 'em a pity point for the instrument playing and music composition being skillful, but this album clearly wasn't meant for me. This is one that puzzles my why it is even included on this list.
Inoffensive but also unexceptional. I don't get why this album is on the list. It sounds generic to me now, but I suppose it probably felt more original in 1970. 2.4
I enjoyed it, but doubt I would ever choose to listen to it again.
Ew it's Rod Stewart. I'm still getting over the fact it's Rod Stewart I could barely recognise I was listening to an album. There's a line in there about the north wind causing the age on his face to show and boy oh boy he's not kidding. Go play with your trains, Rod.
Rock, Pop, 1970 -> 2
It's okay. I can listen to it as background music, but there really isn't anything special about it.
His voice is bad and this was kind of boring.
Not a bad album, but just a bit middle of the road really, don’t think we need two Rod solo albums on the list, so this one gets downrated.
meh
I liked his work with the Faces, but this album just seems to be retreading that work. Not sure why this list needs both Minstral Wind and Gasoline Alley - both so similar and dated products of their time.
2.5
Inoffensive but ultimately boring dad rock. Not Rod's worst but not his best either.
There's better music from him.
Rod Stewart has a very unique voice and with the right songs it's amazing. These aren't the right songs. I don't know why this is on the list. Half of the songs are covers for god's sake.
a little bizarre.
The album was okay. Nothing really interesting, but wasn’t bad either. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
It's ok. A bit bland, a bit boring.
Sin duda tiene una voz muy particular
Have to admit I have never been a huge Rod Stewart fan but he has always seemed ro benin the background for most of my musically aware life. This album was OK background music but I am unsure how this album merits "must listen" status.
Ronnie Wood's guitar playing is the highlight for me on this album.
Just cannot do Rod's voice. Honky tonk also just doesn't sound right to me, nevermind from someone our side of the pond. Stones are the only ones to vaguely pull it off imo. All Over Now is alright, the rest of the album was pretty tosh.
Quite countrified. His voice as ever is like a rasping file on a steel bar OK Wouldnt listen often for sure
Loved this album. Dope sounds!
Sorry Rod, I feel obligated to like this but I just don't. I don't know if it's the instrumentation or your voice, they don't blend together smoothly for me. I'm weird, sorry. 2 stars because you are a legend.
Meh
It's a man and a piano
It's fine, Rod Stewart is fine, I really don't have much more to say about this or him really
More bluesy than I expected. I always associate him with 80s pop. I kept hearing Stay With Me in a few songs, even though those songs were not SWM. Overall, I tired of the sound after 2 or 3 songs.
Eh, not my cup of tea
This is non-music to me, with that roots rock blues that go in one year and out the other, with no in-between. I can recognize instruments, singing, even lyrics, but to me this is the bare minimum in which music can be. Stewart's voice is that high pitched gruffness that you find a lot in music like this, but otherwise it is completely unnotable to me as a record. No bad moments (save for his voice in the beginning when you're getting used to it) but certainly no good moments, and isn't that a worse offense than something being so bad its entertaining? Maybe so.
Not super my thing but I get it. Dad rock
Don't really feel strongly one way or another, to this album's demerit. Favorite track is "My Way of Giving," I guess?
Maybe I just wasn't in the mood but damn this is really boring. No energy at all and Rod's solid voice can't keep it interesting all on it's own.
Meh, middle of the road boomer fodder.
The cover songs are better than the originals, which makes me want to listen to other songs by the original artists instead of more Rod Stewart. Top tracks: Only a Hobo, Country Comforts
I just am not the biggest fan of his voice. In some songs it works for me, in others not so much. One day after listening to this there's nothing special about this album that I can remember.
I feel like Brenda from Bristol - "not another one!". I didn't mind this, and possibly preferred it a bit to the previous one. Certainly seemed a bit more cohesive. But I am surprised one of Rod The Mod's albums is on this list, never mind two of them (so far).
not the worst, but none of the songs are good or memorable. i’ve already forgotten what i just listened to and i don’t like his voice.
Rod Stewart sounds like shit
Boring old rock, rods annoying ass voice doesn’t get any better on this one.
OK-ish album, "Gasoline Alley" and "Cut Across Shorty" being the stand outs, but they also sounded much better when he did them unplugged some 20 years later...
Annoying
Not a bad album, but not really a good album either. Most of it was not very gripping, background music that I didn't enjoy. Jo's Lament was alright though.
2/5 naaahh
Nej nej...
just okay to me, it was fine, but did not seem significantly distinct for the list.
The whiplash from Limp Bizkit to Rod Stewart is severe. At least this album is mostly pleasant if not to my liking. My report is similar to the last Rod Stewart record I heard through 1001 albums; if the lyrics had been better I would've rated it higher overall. That critique aside, it's fine. I'll put it on for my elders, grandma will love it.
For raspete
I'm no superfan, but having heard his greatest hits album dozens of times I'm sure, this one came as a bit of a shock. It's just so surprisingly bad compared to some of the songs he would go on to write and perform. I couldn't point to a single song here and say, "But that one is terrific". Just a lackluster album that is amazing in that he would later burn so brightly!
Definitely was not thrilled about pulling this up, but at least it's short and relatively harmless. Pretty grating honestly, but it fades in to the background decently.
Too limp for me.
Rod.
The songs I don't know sound generic. The songs I do know, It's All Over Now and Country Comfort he does an abominable job. Quite an abysmally boring album. Congratulations to Jack Reynolds for the worst backing vocals of all time.
Meh
It's ok! The music just doesent quite click with me
Meh
Okay but not memorable
Really hope there’s no more Rod Stewart on here tbh, he’s got some good stuff in places but three albums is more than enough. The opening track is actually really good and there is some nice guitar work throughout the record, but it’s mainly just standard uninteresting Rod stuff, including the ending of the second track going on way way way too long. The closer is funky and fun and something a bit different until the lyrics ruin it. Also the album cover is ugly and Rod only wrote 3 of the songs on here the fucking poser
never the rod stuart man. background music to me... i always found it cliched.... i missed the opportunity to connect with it emotionally or in relation to "moments" so regrets to all those who find this deeply moving. time to chnage the oil.
Sure, Rod Stewart is the only man that can still sexually excite your septuagenarian aunt, but what value is he providing the rest of us? It's nice that Aunt Laverne quivers at the very thought of his large chin and very androgynous features (she deserves to quiver at her age!), but it does very little for me.
Oldies, kind of boring unless you feel nostalgic
2/5. Sure, Rod Stewart can sing but it would be nice if there were some great songs on here. Unfortunately, it feels like there might be some interesting lyrics here if the production was good or the music didn't overpower his vocals. Plus, the songs are just okay, most of them covers anyway and none of them great. Not terrible to listen to so not a 1 but close.
Couldn’t get into this. Couple of good tunes however.
Not his best.
+ gasoline alley
Another album that’s nothing special, and probably never really was. To the curators here, I’d say: Fifty something years later, it’s time to move on.
Appallingly bad. The song Gasoline alley is one of rock's finest moments, but the rest of the album is awful. Ron Wood's guitar is fab, and Rod's voice is wonderful, but his consistently poor choice of songs is a constant source of amazement to me. The title track aside, none of this collection even remotely suits his voice or vocal style. What a terrible waste of talent.
Reliable Rod with an early-career bluesy rocker so typical of his work at the time. It has aged well but is otherwise unremarkable.
Bit boring
It sounded like other Rod Stewart albums. It is not good. His voice is annoying and some of the songs were annoying. Better than a one. Not really a two, but I will round up.
Rien de spécial à dire, c'est un Rod Stewart. Pas grand chose de nouveau. 4/10
Ehhehe... Rod
It's my second Rod Stewart's album, and I have come to the conclusion that he always sounds the same no matter what he tries it is either shout or not so shouty
raspy man makes forgettable, vaguely soulless country-rock. washed out mixing gives the whole thing an "AI generated" vibe. 2.5/5
Despite that fact that 6 out of the 9 songs are covers, I must admit that Rod does a pretty good cover. This album doesn't have anything comparable to say Maggie May or Stay with me, but his raw rock n' roll voice and persona are well suited to this format.
I just can't get past the geezers vocals.
Gasoline arse just sounded like Rod Stewart which is just annoying to me!
Rod was the Ed Sheeran of his day, I guess.
I just find Rod Stewart's style so bland. It's easy listening rock that I forget about immediately when the album is over. My second album of his and he hasn't done anything to change my opinion on him. 2/5
idk not great, a couple okay songs but really not my thing
Already listened to Faces today... let's see if Stewart maintains his hot streak. The titular opening track is not off to a good start. Even with the guitar overpowering his vocals, they still make me cringe here. Plinky plonky stuff on It's All Over Now doesn't do much for me either. I do actually like Country Comfort. Album ends on another strong note with You're My Girl -- a more aggressive instrumental with throaty bass giving this a solid groove factor. All said, this album was more bad than good for me. A few enjoyable songs are the outliers and I am grateful for their existence. Otherwise, this is more true to the Stewart that I have grown to dislike. 2 / 5
Rick like this needs to have a bit of an edge to give it what it deserves; this sounds about as dangerous as a rubber duckie.
Just not my flavor. But not horrific enough to drop down to a 1 for me.
Rod Stewart is unremarkable and I don't care for his sore throat vocals.
I like Rod. Didn’t think this deserved a place in the 1001
The wife loves Rod. I find him tolerable. This album was a bit of that. The bonus star is for my wife.
4.5/10 Rien de spécial. Beige.
No thanks
Six standard rock covers and three whiney and lame original compositions. I assume the purpose of the former is to trick people into listening to the latter. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Cut Across Shorty Date listened: 19/05/23
OKAY at best. A little annoying in spots. Not quite a 3
Pas por moi
Definitely some British boomers doing roots rock
Woof. Rod needs Beck back. The country comfort duet with Ronnie Lang is painfully soulless.
I'll never forgive Rod Stewart for the '80s and '90s.
Despite him being deeply uncool, I actually quite like Sir Rod's voice and swagger. This collection is terribly dull though. Definitely won't be returning.
Pretty boring
Very basic
Yeah fine. I was bored much of the time but his voice is actually gorgeous. Just won’t be taking it for a spin again, any time soon
2 albums by this mediocre dude?
He has a very scratchy voice and I didn't particularly enjoy it.
Don’t hate it, but good grief a lot of these songs sound exactly the damn same. And I’m prettttttty sure Rod Stewart was never a down on his luck depression area New Yorker, though it sure seems as if he’s trying to make the soundtrack for warming your hands over a tin drum fire. I’d rather listen to “Da Ya Think I’m sexy?” Even though I had no idea it was spelled this way until I looked it up just now, and I’m never going to forget this.
Sorry mom
It’s the kind of MOR seventies rock I can never get too excited about, no matter how much effort Raspy Rod puts into it. And again, it’s a shame that it’s two-thirds covers. I genuinely think Gasoline Alley and Jo's Lament, two of his own compositions, are among the strongest tunes on the album. Those and the final track. 2.5
Rod Stewart is the most boring guy ever. If you put any old guy with blonde scraggly hair in front of me and told me it's Rod Stewart, I wouldn't even ask any questions. One of the best-selling artists of all time (250 million records sold!), but ask any person on the street to name a Rod Stewart album at gunpoint and 9 times out of 10 they'd tell you to shoot them in the head. He's the type of guy to talk to his wife about "the weather we're having" while eating dry spaghetti. The man's Wikipedia page is longer than the constitution, but when I googled "Rod Stewart fun facts", the first thing that came up was that "He was car-jacked once". Wow. Incredible. 2/5. Better than that fucking god awful Faces album I had about a month ago.
Rod Stewart looks like a Muppet and sings like a Muppet.
I did not enjoy this.
Fucking Rod Stewart
Great for first album but meh for album itself
