Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Pretty boring and forgettable,it’s not completely awful or anything but I can only remember Cut across shorty.
Bluesmaista country rockia. Aika menevää. Paljon myös tosi folkkimaista soundia
An album of mostly covers that showcase Stewart’s raspy vocals, but also the fantastic guitar playing of Ronnie Wood. The covers are well chosen, some obscure, some contemporary, all demonstrating Stewart’s unique ability to envelope his voice around the sentimentality of a song. The handful of originals are strong in their own right, especially the title track. Not a classic, but still a good collection of tunes.
It was fine good music nothing spectacular 3/5
Really thought it would be better
rod stewart was ruined for me through his ubiquity on pop radio, but the man has charm and soul
So Rod. Very Stewart.
Decent like the other Rod Stewart album on this list. ”Just A Hobo” is a great standout however
2.5
Some different yet all to recognisable sounds. Enjoyable, if you like Mr Stewart’s voice.
Loved the Elton John cover. Not Rod's greatest work (that's arguably this one's follow up). This one is more of a half assed Faces album. Rod Stewart just wasn't willing to jump in the pool alone quite yet.
The best thing I can say about this is that it’s much better than the stuff he put out in the next decade. The backup band is rootsy and Rod’s compositions have a Celtic feel, which is a bit out of synch with the R&B influence of the covers.
This one is a bit decent. I like the band and most of the songs are good, not great. I just don’t like Rod Stewart. I tried with the Faces, a few of his solo albums. Something in his voice just doesn’t work for me. 5,5 out of 10
Enjoyed this much more than I expected to. I always had Rod Stewart pegged as a sort of cringy, poor imitation of Robert Plant. After listening to the full thing though, I can appreciate it for the straightforward rock it is. I was marvelling at how good the guitar playing is, then checked the credits to find that Ron Wood played on every song. Makes sense!
Alright, some Songs are quite long and exhaustive
The country album by The Faces, basically, but better than than that probably sounds. Not the most engaging collection on this list, but pleasant enough. Rod also gets a bonus ⭐ for being Scottish (or Scottish enough!)
Not bad, not good. Just sort of 'there'
-1 star for the referee whistle at the end of “It’s All Over Now” & -1 for "Only A Hobo" 3/5
Highlights: It's All Over Now, Lady Day, Gasoline Alley Leave Em's: Only a Hobo, My Way of Giving Overall Thoughts: This was my first time listening to Rod Stewart and he strikes me as a hit making artist. His really successful songs seem to be very good and there were three or so songs on the album that I thought were just that; very good. The rest of the songs really didn't stand out, nor did they have much to offer. I enjoyed that there were some slow songs (i.e. Lady Day, Jo's Lament) that served as breaks between the classic rock songs. I wish that all of the songs were on the level that he clearly demonstrated he can reach, however much of the album felt like filler. Rod's voice is raspy and unique and provides a cool sound but it doesn't contain much variation and it becomes somewhat bothersome after 45 min. I likely wouldn't search out this album again, except maybe the couple that I liked. Score Breakdown: 3.489 & 3 ->3.245
This album was ok but these were not my favorite versions of the cover tunes and the original songs didn’t really grab me. There are Rod Stewart albums that I like a lot more than this.
Stewart's voice can match any genre. You can hear it here. Folk, rock, borderline country... All goes...
L carried by that sandpaper voice for sure
I like Rod Stewart, but don't love him. None of the songs on this album were great, nor were they bad. Listened once, not sure I'll listen again.
6/10. PG, for pretty good
Mediocre. 5/10
The best Rod Stewart I've ever listened to, which does not mean so much actually. 3 stars
Having a broader grading scale available here on 1001 albums would be nice. "Gasoline Alley" by Rod Stewart is better than 3, but not good enough for a 4. Oh no, the first world problems. I'm sorry Rod, you're getting a 1-star rating. His voice is intriguing. As if he had a great party yesterday and now he's singing with a huge hangover.
Not quite as bad as I was anticipating, but still pretty dry. A few memorably pleasant songs but most are ;dakshf;askhfwh;awhg 5/10
This album is inoffensive but doesn’t stand out in any way. The faux country aspect is a bit puzzling but Rod Stewart had enough grit in his voice to pull it off. However, there’s just not much here.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the softer numbers, but overall, I still feel like Rod Stewart is pretty bland and whitewashed blues.
It's sad, I expected a lot more from Rod than rehashed songs from other people. It has all the trapping of better albums from him and better things were to come. This is average.
Classic Rod Stewart. And by Classic, I mean yawnstipating.
Early Rod Stewart (solo, with Faces, and with Jeff Beck Group) is really underrated. I feel like this isn't as strong of an album compared to some of his other early ones, but still a pretty decent album, especially for blue-eyed soul. Fun fact; the largest concert ever in the Americas was a Rod Stewart concert in 1994.
Good album. Good classic rock. Wouldn't be an everyday listen but I like it
Solid album, but nothing special to my ears. I feels like a lot of the classic/southern rock albums are blending together. I really like Rod Stewart's voice. It's talented singing meets pack a day smoker. Kinda reminds me of Brent Mydland's singing.
Love Rod Stewart's guitar sound. Its I funny that he has people from The Faces play on this album, but wanted it to be under his solo name
Rod's raspy voice is so underrated I feel like. The guitar also slaps on some of the early songs. I start to lose interest in some of these songs towards the end but overall I enjoyed it.
Compared to Every Picture Tells a Story less than 12 months later this feels weak and unfocused.
Boring ahhhh
It was OK. Better than I expected. Favorite song: Gasoline Alley
Best song - Gasoline Alley
Absolutely fine. Never been a fane of RSs voice but essentially he's got the Faces behind him. Country rock n roll with a raw sound. Unlikely to play again.
3,5
goong to give it a 3, but I really enjoyed it!
I'd say this is an okay album, but not really anything special.
3.5/5
Great album. A little less rocking than I remembered. Very much centered around folk. I think his voice works better on more rocking stuff, but this is still a very good album. Stellar cast of musicians, especially Ron Wood and Ian McLagan. 7/10
Didn't think I liked Rod Stewart, turns out I do! The bluegrass, piano, guitar, funky number shoot it up in stars, the plain rock sends it down. Hobo and Lady day are at the top for me but plenty to like on this one.
If you enjoy Rod Stewart, you will enjoy this effort as his solo debut. That being said, it doesn't have some of the polish that his more "staying" and iconic songs hold in later efforts.
I like rod stewart and this album was kinda below par with what I would expect from him. It felt pretty bluesy rock throughout most of the album. I didn’t know these were covers but that always kinda knocks the album down with less creativity. His first solo album is good and had some nice songs and some of his later albums did but this one was a blend of pretty average songs. 6.3/10
Ended up enjoying more than I thought that I would.
Perfectly serviceable rock of a homespun variety that flourished in this era. Although the electric instrumentation features, acoustic guitars, mandolins and fiddles are to the fore. Stewart's voice is the ideal match for this kind of country-ish, folk-ish music; it has a rough-hewn, woody quality that blends in nicely. The highlight for me is one of the more upbeat numbers, 'Cut Across Shorty', though the title track is done sensitively, as is 'Lady Day'. It all lands very comfortably but there's an aspect of weightlessness that hamstrings Gasoline Alley; pretty enough, but fails to leave a lasting impression.
This kind of feels like I am listening to Steven Tyler. Its a fine album, even thrilling in parts. I just think its not my thing.
Gasoline Alley calls forward, at least in tone, to Stewart’s later American Songbook recordings. If you’re a fan of his you’ll like it, if not you may find it slow going.
I am vaguely familiar with his work, I couldn’t name any of his biggest hits, but i think I could recognize them by hearing them. This is definitely not my type of music. I can understand why someone might enjoy his work, but I do not. I am willing to check out more of his music in the future.
Pretty solid rock album. Sounds really crisp production-wise.
What a voice! Again, not a go to artist of mine which made it a pleasent surprise to discover this album had none of the cheesiness is Rod Stewarts more know tracks. There are some very rocking nearly punk tracks on here along with some soulful balladeering
Country Comfort
2.5 Country rock. A bit boring overall.
He's pretty good for an old crooner
This was fine. 3.5
Rod Stewart shagged my Aunt Mary on her 40th Birthday. She says he's the worst she's ever had and gave her the clap.
I've said it once before but it bears repeating: https://youtu.be/3xPDBA2mSHI
3 I didn’t think I would like this but it’s not bad. By my fav genre though
The country style which was present in the album was easy to listen to and had some songs like country comforts which are mellow and calm with a steady blues beat
Decent. I have been a little surprised by how much I have liked the Rod Stewart albums so far. 3/5
average rod
Enjoyed the blue grass kind of feel
It’s alright I guess. Nothing exceptional. It’s a good Rod Stewart album by Rod Stewart standards.
Yeah not too much to say about this one. I've never been a massive fan of Rod Stewart. This album is just sort of what it is. There's nothing special on it. Just a collection of somewhat okay songs. FAVORITE SONGS: - Gasoline Alley - It's All Over Now 3/5
This is now the 4th (I think) album I've gotten that features Rod Stewart and it confirms my opinion of him. He just isn't that great of a vocalist. Technically he is sound, but he just doesn't have a powerful voice that is needed for these tunes. For example, on the 2nd track of the album It's All Over Now, his vocals just sound out of place on this. He should be belting out those lyrics but he doesn't and it suffers.
Before Rod,Stewart was unlistenable.
68/100: This album sounds about as good as it's album art: super grainy and hurriedly put together. A lot of the melodies are pretty nice, but the overall production quality seems shockingly low. I probably won't listen to this again, it just doesn't stand out nearly enough to be worth a second listen.
Once again the list authors confound me as to certain selections pop up on this list. I'm a big fan of what Rod did with the Faces. His early solo stuff is amazing. This album? Not even his best. Why does it belong on this list then? No major hits, no groundbreaking output that inspired future musicians. What then? From the book, the author puts more effort on the follow up to this album - Every Picture Tells a Story which is phenomenal and belongs on a list such as this. Treating an album such as this as an album that precedes and kind of lays the groundwork for a (masterpiece) is a weak handed excuse to push a work that isn't thaaaat awesome. 2.5/5.
Fun fact, Steve Jones (from the Sex Pistols) mentioned in his book he liked this album. Me, I liked a couple of songs in there a lot. Title track, Gasoline Alley is strongest of the bunch, a track I'd gladly listen to over again. I also enjoyed "It's all over now". Generally the guitar/rock sounding songs were better than the sort of folky stuff mixed in. As the album went on, and particularly the second half, felt much weaker. I didn't get much out of it. So overall feels like a mediocre album with some really great tracks thrown in. Therefore...3 stars for Mr Stewart.
3/5 ... very listenable and not any bad tunes, but idk why it's on this list. A bunch of covers, very few of which I feel have any pizzaz.
Hey this bar band's pretty good.
I like this one reasonably well. Rod Stewart has always been good, even if I don't seek to listen often. This collection of songs was not as familiar to me as others of his.
I went many years thinking I didn’t like Rod Stewart because I hate Sweet Caroline, and only a few years ago found out it’s actually Neil Diamond that I don’t like. Another reason I thought I didn’t like him was because I don’t like the song Mandy, but again came to realise my dislike is for Barry Manilow. So let’s give Rod his fair chance! Songs I already know: none Favourite after listening: Only A Hobo, Country Comfort Overall: 5/10 This was very middle of the road old-man-rock music. It doesn’t try anything interesting, but also doesn’t do anything terribly. It’s the kind of album where you just stop paying attention and forget you’re listening to anything. You’re not anticipating the end so so can stop listening, but at the same time you’re also not invested while listening. It’s very fitting that the main colour on the album is beige, because this album could not be more neutral. Side note, the two tracks I thought were best are covers of Bob Dylan and Elton John, so he shined brightest for me when performing music where somebody else took the wheel with the actual writing.
Mwah, not really my thing but better than I expected.
You can see the roots of Every Picture Tells a Story here. These first three records are my favourite era of Solo Rod.
A little torn here, not the biggest Rod Stewart fan...but I do like Gasoline Alley, Lady Day...and the cover of Dylan's Only a Hobo but You're My Girl feels like it wants to be on a different album.
Melancholy vibes, made me think of my mum.
Eh, is there any need to have this AND "Every Picture Tells A Story" on the list? If you're gonna have multiple Rod Stewart albums, maybe don't pick ones from consecutive years? This was fine, I guess. Didn't really grab me even with two play throughs. Fave track - "It's All Over Now"?
Rod Stewart is a good singer and his sond are good. Of this album I like "My way of giving".
Pretty good. Stewart's signature raspy vocals are great.
I would have rated almost all of the songs in this album 3 or 4 stars, with the majority being 3. Still, of the 4s, I love the rock n' roll style and the strong themes. Plus, I have a soft spot for good musicians who don't have "perfect" voices.
Mostly alright. He just makes me cringe, I can't get past that I'm afraid. Some decent stompers on there though, foot was tapping along.
It’s just amid album in my opinion nothing special or awe inspiring it’d a decent solo album but honestly I would much rather be listening to something else
Title track aside, there’s not much that stands out on this perfectly fine bluesy rock record tinged with folk. You have to really dig Stewart’s voice to love this more, though.
5/11/22
I always think of Rod Stewart as the cheesy "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" and slightly less cheesy "Maggie May" singer, so it's always surprising to hear his more bluesy early stuff. This album isn't anything too special but it was pretty easy to listen to. 3.5 stars
I get why people like Rod Stewart but he doesn't do much for me. It's good though.
Not terrible, but pretty unremarkable.
Classic Rod
Classic Rod Stewart sound. Really solid album.
"Gasoline Alley" world almost as a companion piece of the discography of Rod Stewart band, Faces. It has contributions of almost every member in the band at the time, but the result is a little more folk and roots rock then the general Faces sound. It's a mix of Stewarts own compositions mixed with interestingly arranged covers of rock and roll classics like "It's All Over Now" and "Country Comfort". It's a competent record, as most things Stewart did at the time, but not as historical for pop music as some would sugest.
Largely forgettable, I'm sure there's a better rod Stewart album out there, his voice us very unique
Pínu pirrandi en samt gott
I always forget that there was a time when Rod Stewart was cool and not the creepy lounge lizard he eventually became. (I hope this means that) I finally understand what my grandma sees in him. 3.25
Ok, Rod's vocals are unique over the top of folky rock
No real stand out tracks, kind of like background rock music, nothing special, but not awful.
Was ok. Some of the songs/lyrics were jammy and weird. Preferred the straight rock songs
Lost me towards the end
It was alright
Not bad but slightly boring so wouldn't put it on again.
Honestly? Nothing special. I won't run to turn it off, but I won't put it on either. Acceptable.
Musicians? Great! Rod Stewarts’ voice? Dylan-esque.
Rock country.
So classic. Love early Rod Stewart. 3/5
Not bad
September 9, 2021 Not bad, but nothing too special. Jumps back and forth between some tracks I liked and some I liked less. Good instrumentation.
It was ok.
Yeah it fine, it’s fun. Won’t actively seek it out again but I would listen again
Definition of mor. Good singer like.
Solid rhythm and blues
I expected better from you Rod.
damn the alley didnt blow up shame :(((
Good first solo effort. Second album much better!
Nothing to standout for me. "Only A Hobo" was my favorite on a first listen.
Early Rod Stewart during his solo career. It was fine. Same Rod voice. Songs were fine.
Not into this era or Rod. He has some absolute bangers but none on this album unfortunately. You’re my girl is probably my favorite track on the album.
It's just solid. Some of the songwriting is excellent, some not so much. Without much surprise my favorite song ("Only a Hobo") was written by Bob Dylan. I don't think there's much to revisit here, other than "Only a Hobo", but I liked it.
(3.5)
Easy listening rock - it's Rod...
Classic Rod Stewart and 70s
Average album
My perception of Rod Stewart has always been that he makes really boring music, this album has changed that perception somewhat as I liked it much more than I expected. But still not something I'm going to come back to
Better than I expected. Maybe early Rod Stewart is actually good Rod Stewart.
Favourite Song: Country Comfort
A nice arrangement of Dylan's Only a Hobo is the standout alongside Country Comforts. Hopefully there are other Rod albums in this as his has better albums.
1)4* 2)4* fun great boogie woogie piano. 3)3* 4)3* 5)3* 6)4* 7)3* 8)3* 9)4*
He's clearly a good songwriter, and the vocal style works. It's not hugely interesting but decent
Not as bad as I was expecting.
👍
Took this one in on i5 to Skamokawa and am perplexed by the heavy traffic during COVID, and how this album made it among the 1001. Perhaps I don't grasp how truly big of a number 1001 is. There must be so many albums that do folk, do folk rock, do ballads, do the James gang thing on the last track, and do it better. We're gonna see so many more British white guys doing this and doing it better. Rod himself did it much better on his next album, for which I will throw down ample stars. Only a hobo is a great song. Maybe I just get grumpy in traffic. B-
Rip roarin cum guzzlin good time
Singular. Chido.
Pretty good.
Lots of good Rod Stewart songs I've not heard before.
Couple of decent tunes, the last one especially.
I have always enjoyed rod stewart and the faces but haven't listened through their albums much. I'm especially excited to be listening to an unknown album from 1970, an excellent year for rock albums. Immediately this sounds more like the 70's then the 60's. Which makes sence to me when I see Ronnie Wood listed on guitar. He was so important for giving the stones their sound in the early-mid 70's. The acoustic and sometimes irish folk sounding song really remind me of Led Zeppelin 3. I thought most of the fast songs sounded like 3am drunk music to stammer to. They all have that driving drum beat and piano banging away.
It's ok, decent for a bit of background but I wouldn't say there's anything stand out. Rods voice gets a bit grating
Decent rock stuff, lots of songs about women, it's ok
Nice, not too exciting.
I like better some of the other stuff by Stewart
I like a the juice. I know Rod is English but something about this feels like Americana. Great title track, final track of the album reminds me of "I'm Losing You" by the Faces. Good old fashioned guitar driven rock. Rod's raspy voice is iconic. Country Comfort had me thinking I actually like the country for a few minutes. I want to give this a four... but can't imagine revisiting this. As we dig into this I think to get a four it has to be something I'm going to come back to...
Good songs.
I'm liking this album of mostly covers way more than the first Rod Stewart record I got here.
luv rod my man
C - 4 S - 3
The other side of the "oh that's where that song is from" coin: A name that's totally familiar but I don't know any of this music. I liked not just fine.
A vision for things to come with his next album but some good jams on this one
Better than I thought it would be.
Good fun, great voice.
I should listen to more rod stewart
this was a whole lot better than i expected, like it kinda rocks in a folksy bluesy way and rod stewart sounded haggard (in a good way) even back when he was like 25. i'll probably never listen to it again but 3/5 all the same lol
Did I need to hear this album before I die? No. No, I did not.
I appreciate the style and liked a couple songs but his voice does get old
I do not like Rod Stewart's voice. Never have. I always feel like he is insincere. Never understood the cultish presence around him. Still, this isn't a bad album or anything so I have to give it points for that. There are a couple of tolerable tracks on here such as Lady Day and You're My Girl. Mostly on account of the instrumentation and composition. The fake hillbilly act that pervades the album is kind of noxious.
Rather forgettable and middle of the road. Rod Stewart's legacy and enduring popularity just baffles me.
I think I can imagine what it would be like to be a person who is moved by this music, but that is not, in fact, me.
Like my annual flu jab, continued exposure to the Rod Stewart pathogen has decreased my sensitivity to his grating yet jubilant approach to cheeseball pop rock. I can even now see the appeal for those who are fans, he is an emotional, kind-hearted singer.
He's a very entertaining singer but its hard to give an album of cover songs any real props for me.
it's rod stewart
Listening session: june 24th, while chilling at home during the heatwave Listened to before: no Thoughts: just really boring… Favourite track: My Way Of Giving
This is okay. The first theee songs I like; but the rest blends together and is forgettable. I can’t fault the record for its ‘generic’ sound, seeing as it was probably new at the time. I would not revisit most of the album but I liked some of what I heard.
I wanted to give this a chance but i can't finish it. I feel like my brain is being sandpapered (derogatory).
Its All Over Now
This is not really near his mid 70s peak. The songs aren't there and its a bit lumpy and leaden.
I thought this was going in a cool direction at the beginning, but right around “Country Comfort” I realized my hope was in vain.
yeah idk what to tell u man its more white guy blues. its fine. he sounds like he'd been singing for hours without stopping before anyone actually started recording, i guess im kinda into that? but otherwise i don't really see (hear?) why this is on the list. tbh i was kinda expecting to see some kind of like, important context on the wiki article explaining its inclusion but it's barely a stub compared to most other albums on here. idgi.
I’m not gonna say I liked this but his voice suited the more stripped back instrumentals.
The opening riff on the last song is the only thing that redeems this album
It was pretty fine, but I don’t feel compelled to listen again. Stewart’s voice is unique enough but its gravelly quality can get repetitive at times; I can recognize the appeal though. These songs have the potential to come to life in a live setting, but on their recorded versions, I’m generally lukewarm. Overall a strong two. STAND-OUT SONG: “Country Comfort” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Gasoline Alley”, “My Way of Giving”
There's something about Rod Stewart that just doesn't do it for me. I can't put my finger on it, I just felt this was sort of bland and boring for the most part.
..

I love a good cover. It takes an original, adds a new artistic voice - sometimes an entire new arrangement - and you end up with something fascinating that stands on it's own. This compilation of covers isn't that. I can't tell what Rod Stewart was trying to say other than, "I like these songs! Listen to me sing them."
I love Rod's voice, but this didn't really grab me. A couple of passable covers, but otherwise kind of forgettable. I can't help thinking there are better Rod/Faces albums to pick. 2, as it wasn't horrific.
Like a lot of Rod Stewart’s more popular stuff, but this was particularly meh
An anthology of completely forgettable songs.
Ho Hum Rod Stewart. His oater work is better. Amazing how a gruff rough voice can still croon 55 + years later... especially after all of those concerts where he had to leave the stage sick...;-)
it's fine, just not really worthy of the list. but i like Rod.
sucks sorry
Started alright but was mixxed really weirdly and got rather repetitive
Meh. I know that Rod is beloved and he's got some songs I like but this does nothing for me. He was 25 when this was released and his voice already sounds like a 65 year-old. Songs about a country boy on country roads from a guy born and raised in North London. Come on man.
Highlights: It’s All Over Now, Country Comfort and You’re My Girl (I Don’t Want To Discuss It). 2.5
Gasoline Alley needs a spark! Only two written by Rod, lots of covers. Recognize and remember It’s All Over Now (Stones) and Country Comfort (Elton), didn’t know the Dylan song Only A Hobo, but sounded like his craft a lot more than Rods. L = (1.0*s) Rod’s songs were lame. The last song Your My Girl was the only one that was any good. I’m not a fan of Rod the Bod. J = (2.1*s) Not sure that was a Must Hear, but we’ve heard a lot worse.
Have heard of Rod Stewart Have not listened to Gasoline alley Had not heard any songs of it. My folks loved Rod Stewart, surprised I'd not heard this. It's ok, pretty loose though. As I get older my appreciation of his body of work has grown. This one just didn't quite resonate with me. Ok, but not amazing. Not sure it belongs in the list.
Hey, I never got a song about a hobo before so I’ll give Rod Stewart that definitely a new perspective. I haven’t heard in a song so I guess that earns a star, but this album really did not make me wanna say hey I need to check it out more also country comfort had a nice tune and track eight was pretty good as well, but that was it again not excited to delve in two more of Rod Stewart‘s catalog so thanks for the hobo song and I’ll keep on pushing
Yeah no
I dunno if you have ever been to Red Deer. I have. Theres a real gasoline alley there, exactly what you'd imagine it is, along the most soulless and godforsaken stretch of highway in western canada. But, at least it has a Smittys. This album made a great soundtrack for that place.
This is ok. I like 3 or 4 Stewart songs but they are not on this album.
Deffo towards the bottom end of the table, but not quite bad enough to be relegated
Rod Stewart
This mf needs a strepsil Fave track: It's All Over Now
Rod got to be one of the clearest cases of distinctive voice so every track eventually sounds the same syndrome. Doesn’t help that this selection in particular has nothing interesting going on. 2.5/5
2.
Rod Steward lite, and that is a good thing. At least more tolerable than Faces.
I don’t mind early Rod Stewart. Every Picture Tells a Story is a better album….this is just about ok. Don’t really think it warrants being on this list tbh. 2.
Unremarkable.
first time listening to this. continues to fascinate me that so many people connect with this music. doesn't resonate with me at all. I thought the last track was the best one. "Only a Hobo" captured my attention but I'm not circling back to it.
Better than I thought it would be
I don't really have anything against Rod Stewart, but I don't understand why this album of his makes the list. It's a bunch of songs he didn't write plus three he did, none of which are all that interesting. What makes this an essential listen? Certainly not the style (soft/folk rock?), nor the presentation (fairly standard arrangements?). I guess it has a bit of a timeless sound--some songs reminded me of the Raconteurs, and most of them could've been much more modern productions. That said, they don't stand out to me much now. I've also never heard any of these tracks before, so I don't think they really made much impact in their time either. Don't get me wrong, the songs themselves are solid-to-good. The music is generally enjoyable, and I actually like Stewart's voice for the most part. As a whole, the album is a fine listen. But there's just nothing that strikes me as special here. I didn't need to hear this before I die. Overall: 2.25/5
I dunno man, this is kind of alright, but it also kind of sucks, a little bit. Rod Stewart's vocals are kind of neat, and the playing is good. But, at the end of the day, the 4 originals here are largely whatever. And the remaining 5 covers are also whatever. There's nothing about Stewart's songs that would make me take them over other blues rock bands of the time. And he also doesn't really bring anything special to the covers. I think you can kind of get away with this sort of thing if you are a really skilled, unique interpreter with a strong vision, but I just don't think Rod Stewart is. It also doesn't feel like the rock songs here rock hard enough. I will say that his approach to ballads does occasionally sort of work though, his raspy voice and straightforward presentation does put the songs at the forefront. And, he *did* choose a good selection of songs to cover, even if I don't think his interpretations are that special. I think there are enough little bits and pieces here to save this from the one out of five, but just barely. Rod Stewart is on thin ice.
Why is, what is essentially a covers album, on this list. Given it’s by Rod Stewart and he adds his own take on some of the songs but to say this is a must listen is generous. I’m all for greatest hits being on the list but make it your own greatest hits, otherwise what are we even doing here?
Rod Stewart was gifted one of the most iconic singing voices of all time. It's a shame he didn't use it on better songs here. Very mid album. All I kept thinking was, "Who chose these songs?" In his catalog from this era, there are so many better titles. Some sort of attempt to Americanize the album maybe? No thanks. And covering It's All Over Now from the Stones, while complimentary, fell on its face. If you do a cover, you need to bring something to it and not make it worse. I like early Rod Stewart. But I didn't like this. Thank goodness it was short...

Fine
I dunno, it was fine, I guess. Very little stood out to me as particularly enjoyable or interesting until the last track, "You're My Girl", hit. That one was really good.
Odd music. Part jam band, part rock. Distorted vocals. Odd vocal levels.
😐
not my monkey not my circus
Extremely boring? Voice that badly needs a glass of water and to stop reaching? Facile lyrics? Must be Rod! Seriously, why is this clown headlining Glastonbury in the year of 2025? It's madness. This album is barely worth reviewing really. It's got a decent version of It's All Over Now on it I suppose, lifting it just about into the two stars.
Bland and disgustingly Americana
I've never enjoyed Rod Stewart's voice, it makes me want to cough and clear my throat. These are all harmless songs that sound like they've existed forever and he just picked them up. It all faded into a generic background Stewartness after a few tracks.
Meh
136/1001 First listen. Rod didn’t gain a new fan with this one but there’s nothing here I didn’t like. 4/10
I like Rod Stewart but not this LP per se. And for the love of Pete do we really need yet another version of "Cut Across Shorty", or any version of it at all?
1.5 stars. This was really bad. Boring musically and his voice is really grating. Hard pass.
For a Rod Stewart albums, this is alright. I mean... I'd rather listen to this again than to any Springsteen album. So two out of five, but it feels weird.
My 2nd Rod Stewart album. I've never been into his music but was shocked to find how much I really liked Every Picture Tells A Story. This album was...fine. Probably wouldn't listen again. His voice isn't my favorite, but at least there's mandolin.
All of these blues rock dudes just sound the same to me
This really just seems so middle of the road, nothing super exciting. It's fine, but really all blends together. It's likely just not for me.
Good, just not my vibe
Two Rod Stewart's in a week? Ok. Again, I don't dislike the music. I think there's a lot I would like if I listened more to it. I just can't stand good voice.
Album started good with It's All Over Now, but not a lot happened after that. Not coming back to the rest of this album.
The definition of mid. Low risk mediocre rock for middle aged women trying to get back in touch with their youth. Nothing to see here. 2/5
Not really the biggest fan of Rod's raspy voices - especially when the songs are fairly pedestrian / MOR. They also feel quite low in the mix - which feels a bit odd as Rod's raspiness is giving big song energy so it should be the most dominant element.
Perhaps I'm just not in the right mood this morning, but this album largely washed over me. I can't recall anything that made itself known within it - a playful riff, a memorable vocal inflection or a thoughtful piece of lyricism. It just did its thing and then it was done. Bland.
meh
Couldn't get into it
I'm familiar with Rod, but I don't think this is his best work. It's not bad but it's not really noteworthy.
Don’t really have anything to say. Fairly inoffensive. Not Rod Stewart at his best but not at his worst either I guess.
I have never understood why people like rod. Never gotten why someone hears that voice and thinks oh that’s great. One song in and all I can hear is that grating sound, would call it rasp but that I feel people use as I endearing term, and I don’t have a positive to say about it. Give it to him, he’s the definition of a rock star; the look - hair and clothes of an American gran, the wives and girlfriends, casual drug use. The music is maybe ok, for early 70s rock/folk n country but I can’t hear past rod. No thanks, 2 Star
Well, I like Rod Stewart's voice. But in some ways this is really a Faces album, and sounds a bit like a bunch of mates who've got together in a bar somewhere. Nice enough, but with the majority of tracks cover versions, I don't really see this as an indispensable album. Very much of its time, I think.
Ok. Not my favorites of his…2.5
2.5
Rod Stewart, great voice, proper rockstar - but just a bit of generic rock innit? Never really cared for him, not that I dislike him or anything.
Lo escucho y lo escucho y no llena
Rod Stewart doesn't really click with me, kinda dull
Objectively awesome voice. Crazy ass voice. But once again, the blues-y, classic rock n rolling style is just not my thing. I guess it’s the style of storytelling and imagery that feels too obvious or specific or corny or just super white lol - like these songs all about the hobo or the country girl named Lucy or the country boy or old grandma. All stories to some extent, which I think is a large part of distinctly “American” music, are quintessential American themes and stories which cannot be separated from the music, in addition to the very direct folk and blues influences like on this album - country fiddle, blues piano, western guitar. Also really like the unassuming, well balanced mix, and hard panned instruments. The thin mix in many tracks isn’t much to my taste but it really works - thin ass steel guitar and drum tone. And yooo the last song is fire. So different than the rest of the album. Tight funky groove hard rock. Vocals are awesome in this track too, hard panned right, everything is super clean.
Sounds like something a fan of Rod Stewart would like
I was whelmed. Didn't grab me at all, felt very generic. Did have some interesting stuff happening musically at times, but the vocals put me off mostly.
His voice sounds like he's going to croak at any moment. I like some of the instrumentals.
Just not a fan of Ron’s voice
Grandpa rock
why is this album considered so good? I didn’t really enjoy it - not the worst so far, but ultimately not going to get another listen from me.
Just didn’t care for this. Talented people all around, but the songs went on too long with too much repetition. They became mini jam sessions. There were a few bright spots, but all in all this was a bit of a slog.
p210. 1970. 2 stars. Rod Stewart was a decent vocalist, and the Faces were great live band. Sadly they're let down by weak originals and redundant covers here. Not their best work by any means.
I'm having a hard time understanding why people like Rod Stewart. The lyricism is fine, but I can't take his raspy voice and the songwriting is pretty boring. Nothing to see here
This album didn't really hold my attention.
This is #day525 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here we are with my second and final Rod Stewart album, thank God. As I've mentioned before, his vocals just don't work for me. This is another 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day526.
Scotch Music. Rhod Stewart has a really entertaining best hits but can’t say he’s that great over an album here. Im glad he found a career from having the voice of a 75 year old man since he was 17, and then a second career as a drunk.
Just not a fan. English wanna be rocker with a scratchy voice. Never been convinced of any real talent. Occasionally fun to listen to, but so is Meatloaf... 2 Max.
Classic early 70s rock album with country and blues influences. Rod Stewart is charismatic and has a very distinctive voice, the music itself is really inoffensive and none of the songs stood out. It's not bad but nothing too special. The production doesn't sound dated, at least compared to many other albums that came years or decades afterwards. It's an okay album, 2.5 stars, but I round it down to 2.
Not for me this one. I said on Saturday with the Faces album I got that I’ve never really liked Rod Stewart and this album confirms it. I just find his music quite boring.
It was ok. I do like some Rod Stewart songs, but I didn’t know any on this and none of them stood out.
The only song I really know by Rod Stewart is I Am Sailing. It has been played so often on certain occasions that it has become overplayed. Otherwise, Rod Stewart always struck me as a slightly drunken chav who you would rather be left alone with in a harbour pub. This album does not change that impression. Overall, it exudes a slightly annoying boredom. 2/5
Not my style too scratchy
kinda shitty but the last song had a nice rhythm Will I listen to again: 0%
English blues mush from a singer that shouldn't have gone solo. I like the Small Faces a lot more, more soul and more action. All I knew about Rod Stewart was the stomach pumping story. This album, while not bad, doesn't change my mind.
Kinda mid
Largely meh on Rod Stewart. He definitely has better songs than the ones on this album though. No stand outs.
I thought I knew enough about Rod Stewart that this would just be some bland classic rock ballads, but apparently he was making weird honky tonk folk music. I also didn't remember being a bad singer, but man I couldn't stand his voice. This still isn't a terrible album, just a bad one... and a bland one. Mid 2.
3.5/10 - I thought Rod Stewart was a crooner/lady rock/ballad musician but that was not quite the vibe I got from this album. It felt to me like a Family Dollar Rolling Stones in a lot of places. The album started on what might be my least favorite song on the album.
It's not offensive but it's boring. I'm starting to think these listmakers don't know ball. 4/10
“Rodders you plonker! What do you think you are doing?! You already have one solo album on the list with Every Picture Tells A Story and it wasn’t exactly a pretty picture now was it… except for Maggie May who I guess was a bit of alright. You also were on Truth by The Jeff Beck Group which was another bloody boring album to tell you the truth! This one doesn’t even have anything as good as Maggie May or any of her other viable females relatives, just a bunch of bloomin lousy, cut rate covers and even lousier originals. Country Comfort?! More like Country Claptrap. Not one of Elton John’s best, let me tell you. You could have renamed it Southern Comfort and gotten yourself into advertising Southern Comfort drinks for a big load of dosh. You could have covered Skyline Pigeon, dressed yourself up as a giant pigeon and made yourself a nice novelty hit. But no, you just had to wheel out this tired old dross! What ever would your mother think!” - Derick “Del Boy” Stewart, older brother of Roderick Stewart.
This was the most “fine” album. No reason for it to be on this list in my opinion.
I don't hate Rod Stewart, but his music is just grocery store white noise to me.
“Excuse me, sorry, but can you take this guacamole away. It’s a little too spicy” - Rod Stewart fan, probably. This is when the list really needs that 2.5
This gets off to a strong start. The opening track is an entertaining folk tune with mandolin that really suits Rod's raspy vocals. "It's All Over Now" may be the biggest rocker on the album, with a really fun piano throughout. It goes on for far too long though; a couple minutes could be removed from the end without losing anything. After those songs it starts to feel like the album is unsure what it wants to be, with a mix of ballads, country tunes, and one more rocker (which also goes on for too long). The ballads are alright, but they don't feel like Stewart brings anything unique to them. The Dylan and Elton John covers in particular are snoozers. The music here is nice enough - the musicians all do a great job - but the material they're given is lacking, and it feels pretty anonymous next to other rock from the era.
Rod has a remarkable voice, but it's too "thin", if that makes sense to you. Then, this album consists mainly of covers, and not very good ones. This might have worked 10 or 20 years earlier, but not in the '70s.
To be 100% real, the only way I’ve ever heard rod stewart was from an American idol episode maybe back in 2009 where they did songs from his discography. I had low expectations. This was better than I thought but it did not stick with me whatsoever
I liked Ronnie Wood's guitar playing but given most of the songs were covers and that I don't much like Rod's voice, I just had to give this a 2.
