Awesomeness
Punky Reggae Party might be the single coolest song I've ever listened to. That was an incredible experience. This whole album is awesome. Truly legendary stuff from a true legend. Arrangements are on point. Vibes from the singing were never in doubt. Making very sophisticated music sound this casual is such a good marker of talent. And, yes, it is even better after having a jaz-*radio static*
This is a really strong album. There are so many great songs/hits on it, it's surprising they all came out on the same album because nearly all of these would be included on a greatest hits. Bob Marley was just such a great songwriter and this album is a great example of that. The production is incredible too, I really don't have a bad things to say about this one, it's a 5/5. Standout Tracks: Natural Mystic, So Much Things To Say, Exodus, Jamming, Waiting In Vain, Turn Your Lights Down Low, Three Little Birds, One Love/People Get Ready
Excellence.
évidement
Waiting in Vain. Classic Bob Marley tracks here. All the songs are solid though Bob Marley is synonymous with Reggae the genre can seem like a bit of a one trick pony. Definitely need to be in the mood.
One Love, baby!!!
I feel as if you need to be high to listened to this album. Still a great album and will have to listen to this again under different circumstances.
Brilliant sound, more than 40 years on. Fab instrumentals and unmistakable vocals.
Come for the songs and Bob. Stay for the Wailers - who might just be the greatest backing band ever, certainly top five with the Spiders from Mars, E Street Band, JB's and the Band. Every second of every track there is something amazing going on behind Bob, and for a good half of this album the vocals are so well known I can kind of blank them out. Exodus the title track is just a riff and a vocal line, but oh man the playing.
Absolutely swamped with work yesterday no time for coherent thoughts. Marley is the GOAT of reggae though
Can’t beat the vibes. Marley learned how to churn out the hits here.
This might as well be a greatest hits collection! Maybe the first mainstream reggae album? Musically interesting and just outside the norm, but accessible enough for everyone to enjoy it. It's a 4.5, bit in this case, I'll round up.
Three 5s in a row! Bob Marley is one of a kind, producing some of the most accessible reggae out there but without sacrificing any authenticity as far as I can tell. The first half were songs unfamiliar to me, but the back half was just absolutely stacked with bangers. Tune Your Lights Down Low and Waiting In Vain are highlights for me.
You know? It’s kind of a travesty that teenagers only experience Bob with a mixture of weed culture. It’s like lumping a trip to the beach into the same group as Panama city beach spring break. If you have a certain mindset of something before and after you experience it, it can severely alter your perception. Bob is in his own right a virtuoso musician. He brought an entire country culture to light with his island music. It transcends weed culture in the biggest way. It is an absolute master-class album in spiritual music. You would think this thing is a few test hits, no sir, it is just greatest hits of one album. Stellar.
What an album. Every track is a standout and altogether a very cohesive piece.
Still vibrant, still awesome, still essential
Prime reggae. Every song is excellent, no skips throughout the almost 40 minute project. Fav tracks: all of them Least fav: none of them 5/5
Cool album that has slicker production and more funk & soul elements than your standard reggae album. It still contains some of the political bent of Bob Marley's songwriting but also more simple, pop-type tunes like "Jamming" and "Waiting in Vain". Probably one of his most accessible and catchy albums with several all-time classics.
Makkelijk 5 sterren dit. Jammin', Three Little Birds en One Love, en verder niet echt dieptepunten ofzo. De rest is ook gewoon leuk. Klassiekertje dit.
4.5
Finally, some good content.
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I've never been a fan of Bob Marley but I always judged him by his singles. Hearing the whole album in context really makes me appreciate his music more. There's a lot of soul in it and I would never have gotten that from a greatest hits album. Loved the vibe of the whole thing.
Own on Vinyl
Love the beautiful island vibes of this album. Worth a purchase. 5/5
I really enjoyed this one. The perfect reggae album. So many good tracks from one album. Bob Marley defined the genre, and while I'm not an avid reggae listener, this whole album is a timeless gem.
Obvious five-star album up front, but I had almost forgot just how good this album is. Marley’s best album and a likely contender for my personal top ten. Everything comes together brilliantly on this album. The band, the back up singers, Marley’s delivery and lyrics. The album has an amazing vibe. Major hits and great deep cuts. Every single track slaps and the album works as a whole.
Yeah, man. This is what you want out of a reggae album. I mean, if you want a reggae album, that is. Which I generally don't. But, if you're looking for a great reggae album full of smart, intellectually stimulating, socially relevant, politically aware, but still fun jams? This is the album for you.
Pretty much all of it was familiar :) Also led to Matisyahu, who is amazing and awesome!
Literally half the tracks are iconic
Yeah obvs it's quality.
Bob Marley’s production is as superb as his songwriting and vocals. This is not my favorite Wailers album, that would be Uprising. Still it warrants 5 stars. One of the lesser known tracks The Heathen is actually my favorite
Bonus star since I got to listen at the beach
I'm a simple man. I see Exodus, I give a 5/5 rating.
The perfect blend of the aggressive political stance of Catch A Fire and the love-based songs of Kaya. When you are done listening to Legend, Exodus is the place to start the journey into Marley’s studio discography.
Great!
Groundbreaking album: the eponymous track "Exodus" is brilliant, as is "Jamming", "Waiting In Vain", and the "One Love / People Get Ready" medley.
I 100% got stoned during this. I don’t like reggae much. This transcends, defines, and epitomizes reggae. Loved it so much. Made me feel so hopeful and happy.
A legendary album by a legendary man: I loved the whole album. Full of reggae beats and the classic Bob Marley songs. Had me bopping along for the whole length of the record and even sometimes singing along. Purely iconic and it totally deserves that status.
Great Music! Classic 5 stars
Very pleasantly surprised by this album. I know Bob Marley is iconic but this was the perfect accompaniment for a drive to work in May. Love the vibe and groove of the album. Singles are iconic but everything else was great too!
incredible.
Perfect summer relaxation
This is jam mon
The second half of this gem has all the hits that are already in the *Legend* compilation: \"Exodus\" \"Jamming\", \" Waiting In Vain\", \"Three Little Birds\", \"One Love\" (that latter track showing Marley actually covering himself from a time where the Wailers were a ska band, a decade ago). Yet the first part of this record is as important as the second. Topical tracks such as \"Natural Mystic\" or \"Guiltiness\" redefine the meaning of the term \"deep cuts\". That sh*t is indeed... *deep*. And the evocative mood suggested by the sparse instrumentation aptly emphasizes that deepness. I'm not a huge reggae fan, I admit it. But what set Bob Marley apart from his peers was his genius songwriting. It's hard to argue here. You just need to listen to the first verse of \"Natural Mystic\" to feel it, man! Of course, this LP must be on the list. I would also add *Catch A Fire*, the Wailers' first international release (which has subtle and interesting rock crossover details in its arrangements). And I know *Burnin'* is not always deemed equal to those two, but I love the songs on it as well. Going back to *Exodus*, I obviously give it a 5/5 grade. Listening to the title track again right now. That epic jam is... relentless, and it really feels like a modern-day Moses is singing on it. That *Legend* compilation could not have had a better title... Number of albums left to review: 564 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 211 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 102 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 127
Un bikou
Brilliant from start to finish
9.5
How do you not get into this stuff? Love, unity, and togetherness. The closest thing to Marley I can come up with ever is early Sting. Three Little Birds is an inspiration. The album's themes revolve around political and social issues, with lyrics that promote love, unity, and resistance against oppression. This is a powerful and uplifting and uplifting album.
Excellent Album
Anyone who hasn't heard this album should go and listen right now!
Cool reggae hits
A genuine classic, wonderful album, 6 stars!
5 through and through. Need this OG print on vinyl ASAP
The zenith of a brilliant career. While any number of Bob Marley's albums could stake a claim as his best, the artistic heights achieved here (Natural Mystic, Three Little Birds), supported by a number of talented musicians also at their best, combined with the accessibility brought by some of his biggest hits (Jammin', One Love), and his usual strong political messaging (Exodus, Guiltiness), culminate in what is in my opinion one of the most epic and complete albums ever made. 5 heavenly trumpets out of 5 🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺
We recently listened to Marley's album Natty Dread, and I wrote how I appreciated hearing a full album of his work. This one I can say I truly enjoyed. I didn't realize that all my favorite songs of his are pretty much in a row on Side 2. And I quite liked the somewhat different feeling Side 1 as well. This is a classic with great, distinctive, lovely songs.
I generally enjoy my reggae in smaller doses but this felt cool and soothing today. The reggae rhythm bounces along under almost every song but the lyrics are moving and uplifting and the second half of the album left me feeling all right.
Makes me want to smoke a joint at 7:58am The Heathen is low key a face melter I like that every song starts with the same snare drum sound Who could have tried to assassinate Bob Marley??
Vibes
So Many "Greatest Hits" off one album. If you like Reggae, this is one of the best of all time.
Controversial opinion: I dare say Bob Marley is more important and influential that the Beatles. Apart from writing some of the most universally loved pop songs, there's no country that has not fell in love with good ol' Bob. The music transcends language and border, while comparatively, the Beatles are very anglo-centric in scope. This record itself is perfect - up there as Abbey Road, with sublime love songs, straight on political lyrics that can be applicable even today, and it's timeless. Yes, reggae itself is a kind of the marmite of music - but these songs transcend even the genre itself. And what's more - it's hard for me not to be put in a good mood from the first few skanks on this album. It's perfect.
Really struggled to decide what I'd rate this album. I've often had people around me who loved reggae, and never fully been able to buy in myself. Bob Marley certainly seemed like the most accessible one, at least, and this album is for sure. I mean, this is the answer to the question "which studio albums could also be considered greatest hits albums" because the second half is just iconic track after iconic track. I cannot deny that. I usually reserve 5 stars for stuff that I personally adore, but I cannot deny that this is a particularly strong album, one of the most deserving inclusions on the list.
Who can't love this album? It's a beauty.
I have to say, I loved this, quite a bit more than I was expecting. I always thought Reggae was alright, but was never that into it, but I thought this was wonderful. It was a beautiful, chilled, spiritual record and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey it took me on. Favourite: Jamming
Pure Marley!!! Long live Bob Marley!!
How does Bob Marley like his doughnuts? Wi’ jam in… So many classics on here. Reminds me of mowing people down in the streets of Liberty City, listening to Tuff Gong Radio… good times. I’ve been trying all day to justify to myself why this shouldn’t get full marks, but I can’t do it. Every song is dreamy, catchy and uplifting. I’m deploying the fünf
Not only does this alb have all of Bobs biggest tunes, the tunes theirselves are on a different level. Almost modern folk (Jamming and Three Little Birds). Groove and mood both impeccable throughout. A classic. Sot Natural Mystic Jamming Waiting in vain Turn your lights down low Three little birds 5/5
Excellent album, full of classics. What a prolific creativity Marley and the Wailers had.
Classic album.
muito tri das antiga já
It was a little bit repetitive but I didn't mind. Every song gave off a "forget your troubles" vibe that I could listen to over and over again.
Not much to say about this one. It's pretty perfect. For my money, their best studio work.
The effortless groove; the feel-good lyrics; some classics of the genre. It just puts me in a good mood.
Brilliant. Evocative and beautiful throughout.
You can really see what the fuss is about. Goes down so smooth
Awesome
Realmente é uma obra prima do reggae, a sequência das músicas se apresenta como uma jornada contagiante. Vocal, melodias e ritmos constroem a relevância em que One Love/People Get Ready é o ápice do valor do reggae como expressão da esperança em forma de música.
A fantastic and influential album. Try and put aside the political and social messages, and it still stands up as a musical masterpiece. Marley's vision was simple: bring together people through music. It helped that he was a half decent songwriter and performer. I'd never considered the two sides to the story on the album: one political, one personal. It's all music to me. Waiting in Vain has always hit a personal spot. A remarkable record.
HL: "One Love", "Three Little Birds", "Exodus", "Waiting in Vain", "Natural Mystic" Not much to say about this one; uh it's a triumph I guess. Surprised after all the times I've listened to "One Love", that opening piano chime transports me. January 9, 2023 (day)
If you like reggae you are kind of required to love this album (even if Bob Marley isn't your favorite). Kind of the quintessential Bob Marley & the Wailers record. Politically charged, yet laid back at the same time. Has at least 3 of his most recognizable songs. Consistently good throughout.
I'm a big reggae fan so this album gets a 5 from me. I do wish the genre could be represented by acts that are not Bob Marley. Confidentially, I'm not that much of a Marley fan.
What an important piece of music history, and rightfully so, what an album, had me smiling from ear to ear the entire listen
Classic.
An excellent exhibit to support my theory that the pinnacle of any genre is worth checking out. Both warm and chill; a genuine masterpiece.
Chill, fa venire voglia di fumarsi qualsiasi cosa e andare su un’isola tropicale
Such. Peaceful, no skip album Lovely sounds Love the sound of reggae Bob Marley is just so cool
never really listened to reggae before apart from the famous bob marley songs. really fun and interesting to hear them in the context of their album, i actually fucked with it a load more than i expected! favourite song was exodus, super vibey.
Uplifting, feel-good music
just a classic laid-back vibes it's an all day listen I wish I understood he was talking about more but nonetheless the music is still mellow
Reggae is not really my bag, but when you hear a classic album you just know it. How does reggae become as gig as it does without this record? The sound. The rhythms. The harmonies. The overall good feeling. It really does s all there. Throw in the fact it has the tracks you know plus a couple you didn’t know you needed to know and it’s perfect.
Gotta be some of the best reggae songs of all time.
Gotta love some Marley
The measuring stick for all reggae albums. Incredible
It’s Bob. Enough said
It’s bob marley. It’s a 5/5. Absolute legend with meaningful lyrics and haunting sound. King of old-style reggae.
Bob's magnum opus. This was excellence in the highest degree.
His biggest and most famous work for a reason. I and I wanna jam it wid you, Berhane Selassie.
Amazing and seminal.
Wonderful record.
Was hooked from the first 30 seconds. Rest in Power Bob Marley!
As much as I'm a fan of Bob, this was the first time I ever listened to this entire album. I'm partial to the Lee Perry era, mostly because of how experimental it was—from before reggae settled into a formula—and I've never cared much for The Wailers' early Island records, mostly because they contained slicker (and less-interesting) versions of the Lee Perry-era songs. So I guess that's why I've avoided listening to this for so long. (Even though my first exposure to Bob was the all-Island-records-era Legend album that every dorm room in college had a copy of.) But damn if this album isn't great. First of all, the sound is phenomenal—as much as I love the Perry era, his production never sounded as rich and enveloping as this. Here, the production is flawless. You can hear every last detail. And I was blown away by how amazing the drummer, Carlton Barret, is. Even though reggae is often made fun of for how basic and repetitive it is, this dude constantly finds a way to keep things interesting while always remaining tasteful. It's amazing how many of Bob's greatest hits came from this one album. You get past the first four songs (which are great, by the way) and then it's just one hit after another. Dude was on a roll. (The last time I was blown away by how many hits came from a single album was The Stranger by Billy Joel--also from 1977.) Anyway, Bob was a true legend. He had a fantastic gift for melody and his lyrics are timeless. Perhaps more so than any other songwriter or band (maybe even more so than The Beatles), his music transcends borders and cultures. You might not like reggae (though my guess is if that's the case it's because you aren't listening closely) but not liking Bob Marley is akin to not liking the sun. Having said all of that, it's hard to know how to rate this album. It's clearly a 5 as far as an original release goes (songwriting, performances, production, etc.). But is it an album I want to pop on and listen to again anytime soon? I think it, like Zeppelin IV and Who's Next, kind of suffers from its own greatness and over-familiarity. Do I really need to hear Stairway/Baba O'Reilly/Three Little Birds again? I guess today the answer is yes, though I don't know when I'll next pop this sucker back on. 5/5
Excellent album of BM & The W. Third album of them generated so far. Although it contains the largest portion of Bob Marley hits, I always thought Catch A Fire or Natty Dread were generally stronger albums. Nevertheless this album is still a very clear 5 of course.
This sounded even better than I remembered. Solid reggae album that exceeds its genre.
Excellent
Jah
There really isn’t any bad Bob Marley. This isn’t my favorite recoding, but it has some gems. Always a fun listen.
great album, classic feel good and versatile. summer vibes- bob is a bit of a legend
5 Stars. Obvious Classic
Un dels pics de la música al s XX. Revolució, misticisme, amor... eixos que vertebren deu melodies mágiques. Estiu i felicitat en estat pur
Amazing. 5/5
Another seminal album by Bob - on the Mount Rushmore of modern musicians. Bangers left and right. Political viewpoint as relevant today as when written. Don't really know where to begin - turn your lovelight low, might be the weak-point because it is a just a solid song about sex. Close to the perfect album
Hey bob!
Listened to this loads as a six-former with a stoner who friend decided to get into vinyl and liked the big shiny gold sleeve. Great album, loads of good songs and I love the bass. Listening to it now on headphones, there's so much more going on musically than I realized and some fantastic subtle lead guitar playing. Reading the Wikipedia notes about it being a rock album with a reggae veneer was interesting. I totally see that on the middle eight on 'Waiting in Vain' and 'Turn Your Lights Down Low' could be a Clapton song (with better vocals).
Rich, soulful, laid back, uplifting, beautiful. Musically gorgeous with surprisingly diverse and nimble instrumentation. Moves lyrically between the personal, spiritual and political with an effortlessness that few artists are capable of. What a joy to hear. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Natural Mystic, Exodus, Waiting in Vain, Jamming, Three Little Birds, One Love/People Get Ready, Turn Your Lights Down Low, Guiltiness, The Heathen, So Much Things to Say
This is some real premium, bass-heavy Bob. I was in a reggae mood so a full 5 from me.
Can't be anything other than a 5 star. SO MANY BANGERS! One lovee, one heaarrtt, lets get together and feel alright! We're jamming... I don't want to wait in vain for your love. Would rate it 10/10 if possible. Unlikely to be beaten in the near future.
JUST PERFECT
Great album. Some of Bob's best music on this record. For anyone just getting into his music or even reggae this album would be a great start.
Excellent album - lots of hits and the second half of the album is probably better. "Waiting in Vain" is probably my favorite despite the popularity of others. 9/10.
An excellent excellent, quite the bop.
Regulars readers of my reviews (if they exist) may have noted my disdain for invocations of the spiritual. I hold no patience for any guru appealing to the realm of auras and pixies when defending their position. It doesn't bother me if someone holds such beliefs, but they can at least try to argue properly. Of course, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate art made under such a mindset; I cling to death of the author, so I don't need to pretend that an artist's philosophical position necessarily influences how I see their work. More relevantly, Bob Marley's music does not necessarily inspire me to learn about Bob Marley's spiritual views. However, this album has a few songs that are meant essentially as hymns, most notably One Love/People Get Ready (the second part is due to an acknowledged yoinking from Curtis Mayfield). The odd thing about that: One Love is played so often, its devotional nature has become, if not quite evaporated, then definitely diluted. And I'm content with that. I prefer the humanism of the song to its mystical elements. And this is a bizarre consequence of the album's songs being so ubiquitous: they become easier to like. Separated from the political and religious contexts by dint of prevalence, the uncomplicated benevolence of Exodus soars (yes, even though it's called Exodus). So, we have witnessed a shift from the central song of the album being the charged Exodus to the open-armed Jamming. A cynic may consider this dumbing-down, but I prefer a call-to-jam rather than a call-to-arms. Exdosu isn't perfect. Turn Your Lights Down Low gets really Steely Dan with its jarring smoothness and Bob Marley's perplexing adoption of the lounge-lizard seducer persona, but you'll forgive it. The album has too many strengths for that. The goodwill of this album might be a little bleary-eyed, but it's undeniable. Also, it has lots of fantastic songs.
Excellent album. Impossible not to feel good listening.
Always going to be a 5. However less upbeat than much of their work. This album focuses more on stories. For better or for worse this defines an entire genre and Reggae has never really moved past this
On the surface this is a catchy reggae album with other genres thrown into the mix, which gives it crossover appeal and makes it very accessible. There is not a single weak track on the record and several ubiquitous classics. On this basis alone it is faultless and worthy of five stars. Add in the depth provided by the political lyrics of side 1, and the thematic contrast of the romantic/optimistic side 2 and you have a work of genius. Rating: 5/5 Playlist track: Three Little Birds Date listened: 08/06/22
Takes me to a sail boat in the BVIs!
Top 10 greatest albums of all time. I attribute so much importance to this album on different levels. But from a purely musical point of view it's simply transcends pretty much everything out there. Essential? Yup.
how could I NOT give this five stars?
A great and relaxing listen. I always forget about reggae, it blames your boxed and sheltered world of music choices.
Hell yes. 4.8/5
Good
When you havnt listened to it for a few years it is stunning how good this is.
Wall to wall classics. First time i've ever heard it as an album.
Classic Marley with all the great songs!
The dude survived an assassination attempt and then put together one of the most biting commentaries ever put to music together, and it was all so chill and funky and fire all at once. A generational talent
Always love Bob Marley and this was another excellent example of his work.
Makes all Reggae less as good. Perfect.
It's hard to imagine a better Reagae Album than this. Iconic.
It's genius. The songwriting, the musicianship, the production.
-chill
Brilliant album.. Touches on some many themes and nice blend of ska and roots reggae. Yes an album everyone needs to listen to.
Pretty good.
Obvi
I mean, come on.
Exodus, Jamming, Wait in Vain and Three little Birds all on this album? Plus Quality “non- hits” make this one of the best Reggae albums of all time. Love this stuff as it is 1) really good; and 2) influenced RnR in such a positive way (e.g. The Clash, Sublime, Eric Clapton, The Police).
Really great album throughout. I was only exposed to the 'Legend' greatest hits for awhile, so it's awesome to hear some of those songs in the context of a full album, combined with some of the tracks I didn't know that surrounded them. Chill beats and sounds with some heavier (and hot and heavier) lyrical content. Killer!
Love Bob Marley! Great album.
The production on this album is perfection. The drums are so crisp and tight; the bass is thick and funky; and the horns blend beautifully, sounding like an organic extension of the rest of the band. And a lot of great guitar. There's some killer psychedelic shredding and I was totally drawn in by that strange tone on the guitar in "The Heathen." I found his vocal performance particularly entertaining. I love the flow of his vocals on “So Much Things to Say” - I’ve never heard Bob Marley sing like that. (The bonus single “Punky Reggae Party” even has him scatting.) Throughout the album, he sounds so free and expressive. Some really soulful stuff here. There are a lot of classic songs on this album but I also really enjoyed the album cuts. Some songs on here I've never heard before. P.S.: Remind me to show you a music video my friends and I made in high school for “Jamming.” 😎😂
I LOVE this album. Such a classic!
Two stars for Jamming, which reminds me both of The Simpsons and my one trip to the Caribbean as a kid, where Bob Marley still seemed to be the most played artist, 20 years after his death. One star for the ultimate feel-good good feelings of Three Little Birds and One Love / People Get Ready. Another star for the darker, more purposeful grooves of Natural Mystic, The Heathen and Exodus. Half a star for the total disregard of grammar on 'So Much Things To Say'. That's 4.5. And I'll round up because Bob was a Spurs fan.
Perfection
The best album from the king of reggae. An album full of genre defining songs
Legendary. Waiting in Vain is his best song.
A reggae classic, and one of my favorite Bob Marley albums
Muito bom, Bob Marley me fazendo ouvir reggae. Melhor música: Waiting in Vain e Turn Your lights down low
Perfection - a quality listen the whole way through! I've looped it all morning and it's the most productive I've been in a long time. Endlessly listenable, it's such a joyful album. It puts me into a perfect mellow, chill mood. I love that Bob's message still carries tremendous weight, it isn't lost or diluted by the way it's been packaged and presented: calmly, from a place of peace and love.
We jammin, we jammin, we jammin
I'm woefully unfamiliar with Marley's work and Reggae at large (FOR NOW)—loved this album on first listen. The performances are striking and backed by a truly wonderful layering of rhythms.
I'm not sure how anyone could not love Bob Marley. There was something really special and magical about him. This album is an absolute classic. 5 stars.
Perfect
Already knew this would get a 5 before the listen, just a fantastic album filled with a ton of classics. Great vibes throughout.
Absolute classic
One of the best records ever
Some of Bob Marley’s most well known songs are in this album. Aside from that, this album is a joy to listen to. The music is purposeful, catchy, and driving. Marley’s lyrics span religion, politics, sex, and love
5stars
This is such a good album. I remember dismissing it when it came out since my hatred for disco made me turn away from anything dance floor oriented. I fortunately got over that and have loved this album for a while. Bob’s move to London resulted in his music getting fused with music from the London club scene at the time. This set the stage and trajectory for reggae in the 1980s and 90s and allowed sub-genres of reggae such, as dancehall, to be more easily accepted.
So many hits on one album! Time Magazine named this the best album of the 20th century, so who am I to argue? A joy to listen to from start to finish.
Really solid, legendary album. Had not previously heard the story about the assassination attempt on his life just before he recorded this. Makes the songs even more powerful in that context.
Uno de los mejores de esta lista.
Iconic album and great melodies
First song gets you in the mood immediately
Starts great with Natural Mystic but it drags in the first half where it starts to build up to a climax at the end.
Classic album. Loved it, as always.
Very good, possibly their best album. I know there is a lot of historical context with this album, and I believe that adds to it. It's a pretty political album.
The quintessential Bob Marley album. Some great songs on here
Loved listening to the entirety of the album. Its a journey from such an influetial and all star artist. LEGEND
Rating: 10/10
perfect Friday album
5.0 - To me, this is the definitive Bob Marley album, more so than "Legend." Most of my favorite songs of his best songs are here. Such an awesome record that I can easily play on repeat.
One of Bob Marley's best. Exodus is an incredible powerful song. I'm lucky I have a pristine Mobile Fidelity vinyl copy of this record and it sounds incredible. Deep powerful bass and excellent balance overall. Thanks for the reminder on how great this album is. Side one starts out great and just keeps getting better until it gets to Exodus. Side 2 might be even better - it has the better known songs; Jamming, Waiting In vain, Three Little Birds, One Love. 5 stars
Classic album - didn't realise how innovative it was.
This album is awesome. I had always liked reggae and lover's rock but had never actually listened to a Bob Marley album, and I'm glad I finally did. All of the songs perfectly encapsulate the reggae vibes of the 70s and 80s and all of the singles are still bangers. Fav songs: so much things to say, the heathen, exodus, three little birds, one love/people get ready
I could listen to Bob albums all day. Jamming!!!! One Love, a song that completely barnstormed the entire world, just barely over 3 minutes. All of these tracks are a pleasure to listen to, i wish there was more of it.
Exodus, Natural Mystic, Jammin', One Love.... a great, mellow album.
It's amazing how these guys can take that simple beat from Jamming and use it / transform it across a bunch of different songs (Natural Mystic, So Much Things to Say) and have it sound new / not tired every time. Whatever the beat or the sound, there's so much energy every time. Marley's lyrics (on the politically charged first half) are second-to-none. And when the lyrics are lighter in tone on the second half, the whole experience of the songs ramps up (and there are still some great lyrics). Of the lesser knowns, I really enjoyed The Heathen (some edgy guitar work). Just an incredible album. As an aside, I hate when they remaster albums and add stuff to it (e.g., tracks 11 and 12). There was a certain feel and seamlessness to the original album, and although Punky Reggae Party is fun, it doesn't fit with the rest.
So much better than I expected, remastered version, awesome.
Excellent album full of bangers
Enjoyed
SHACKY don't worry about a thing, because every little thing is gonna be alright (this is my message to you).
Gotta love Bob. First track and off to a great start. I imagine it'll be a 4. Oh man, ALL the bangers on this one 🙏 at LEAST a 4. Maybe a 5 cos it's his best Stuff IMO
Excellent album. Waiting in Vain and Three Little Birds are some of my favorite songs.
Love it
Easy listen. Full of great tracks, Jammin’, Three Little Birds, One Love, Exodus. The rest of the album supports those hits and is calming and enjoyable.
Came out years before I was born. Has there been anything better since?
Great album from start to finish. Hard to say if there’s even a bad song on it. Many reggae classics on this. Listened many times before and will continue to listen to it. 9.2/10
always great..my start to summer album
so good. so very good
Bob had a great energy flowing when he wrote all these songs and put this album together. So enjoyable
I love Bob Marley and The Wailers so I knew I'd love the album. And I wasn't disappointed. It was a solid album, although my favourites off the album are the most known tracks - Three Little Birds and One Love / People Get Ready. 5/5 stars.
I hope you like jammin' too
Not really into reggae but this is definitely a good album. 9/10
This one gets a full 10 from me. The songs were different enough that it didn't feel too samey and it didn't go too long. Groovy beats and just made me feel nice and chill
a classic, obvi!
BOB!
Story of my teens
Bob Marley & The Wailers is chill to listen to. The vibe and rythm feels like vacation.
Excellent
Amazing album. Loved it.
Legend. That's why his greatest hits are named that.
Great memories have been made while listening to this album. From childhood to my teenage years to my youth (which was primarily sent at home crying because of the pandemic), this album was always there. Love Bob Marley.
one of the best
Great classic reggae
Best Bob album. Good vibes only.
I’m really loving the BM on this. There is just so many songs that deserve to be popular.
Beautiful music, rhythmic and almost hypnotic. A new genre for me.
LOVE
Stone cold classic.
Fucking love bob and the wailers waiting in vain is my absolute favorite
Peak reggae, not much else you van day. Listen to the subtlety of the singing in Jammin, Marley was a true genius.
Great first album all the way through. Bob Marley is a genius.
Beautiful stuff. 5/5. Waiting In Vain is probably Marley's best song?
Great album, highly recommend it.
excellent reggae masterpiece
Sunny and upbeat reggae. The antidote of a November Thursday in lockdown! Every little things going to be alright.
5/5
1977: Exodus, Jamming, Three Little Birds, One Love/People Get Ready
I didn’t think I had listened to much Bob Marley, but literally just the first few opening notes of this record unlocked some memory buried deep inside of me of my dad playing this around the house when I was little. I mean it makes sense, this is the exact type of thing my dad would play in the summer, but somehow this album got buried until now. I’ve recently been working on expanding my genre range in regards to my bass playing, and with bass being such a backbone of Reggae music I decided to take a shot at some of the genre’s techniques and learn a few songs from The Wailers… good god is it even harder than I expected. I wan’t expecting it to be easy but I wasn’t expecting it to feel so different. I love it, I love finding anything that is a challenge. The song Exodus is actually one of the songs I have been trying to learn, now listening to it in the context of its album I love it even more. Every bass part on this record fits into the rhythm in such a cool way, and does exactly what bass is supposed to do in bridging that gap between rhythm and melody. Highlights: Exodus, Three Little Birds
I first heard Exodus about 25 years ago because I saw it on a greatest of all time list. I had heard Bob because when I was in college everybody owned Legend. I think it was required listening for the freshman class. I just missed the memo. But I bought Exodus and I realized that there was so much more to Bob than those songs. These are some great songs and it’s a great album. It should be heard by people. It’s a good reminder of how good it really is listening today
Not a big reggae fan but this album put me in a good mood for the rest of the day. Didn’t realize I knew so many songs off of this album
This was my second Bob Marley record I’ve listened to in its entirety, and I will say I like it more than the other (Natty Dread). A lot of great feel-good songs. Marley’s melodic choices for his singing paired very well with the overall songwriting.
Good album I was really moved
Obviously a reggae classic
amazing, didn't bore me at all
Can't go wrong with this one, it's pretty much a greatest hits album. Especially the second half is one great song after another. Love the title song and "Jamming" in particular, absolute reggae gold. The religious imagery and themes are especially strong with "The Heathen," "Natural Mystic" and others. And the hope and optimism of "Three Little Birds" and "One Love" is a great way to end the album for a weary, cynical world.
Super chill, enjoyable record. I dont think Exodus is as consistently excellent as Natty Dread, but there are incredible highs (no pun intended) here, like the title track, One Love, and especially Jamming. Just instantly calming and soothing music that feels pretty essential in our anxious world
Yay Bob
Definitely the undisputed king of reggae. Jammin and three little birds alone make the album but the other tracks were solid as well. I may not want to listen to reggae all the time but I would definitely listen to this again.
A tremendous, historic album, absolutely fantastic. It will always lift your spirits and make you happy. Highly recommended to start your day.
I want to jam it wit you. 3&1/2
Great records here from a legendary group. I've heard a Three Little Birds among a few of the groups other songs on other albums, so I went into this already expecting to like it. Some awesome groove throughout that really gets you moving. Concise yet packed runtime of great music that evokes the feeling of sitting around a campfire and listening to everyone jam together seamlessly. Jamming and Three Little Birds have definitely transcended and become classic songs in general, but there are some beautiful songs throughout such as Natural Mystic and Waiting in Vain. Pure reggae is a genre I don't know too much about, but this is an incredible introduction to the genre if you're unfamiliar.
Lovely and chilling, super-relaxing as always ❣️
Quite enjoyable.
Mythical album about Jamaican struggle recordad while exiled in rainy London. A voice of hope and that “everything will be alright” for the jamaican people.
Fantastic album, got better as it went on. Listening to it with the sun shining, whilst driving made it even better.
It's the Bob Marley album with all the songs you know.
Seemed like every time I tuned into the words, Ye or someone was dropping the n-word, bragging about something, or talking about violent sex. Made it hard to appreciate anything else about this supposedly classic album.
it's not too bad. it's new, i've never listened to this genre before. this is lowkey so fire what the fuck.
Another 70s album I knew back in the day, it’s a sweet one. Band doing neat and subtle things around steady bass and drums, singing is very pleasant, lyrics easy to follow and nothing that troubles me (unlike a lot of other 70s music). I used to think this was classic reggae, I read now it was quite different from most reggae being played at the time, I live and learn. It’s very replayable, could be undemanding but upbeat background music. Comfortable rather than deep? But the smooth sound is a special achievement - delivering an interesting arrangement around a simple but unflagging groove (eg title track) is no small feat. Wondering how I should rate it, curious what critics have said - stopped in my tracks by datum from Wikipedia that Time magazine had called this the best album of the 20th century - it turns out the article in question was a set of bold claims (across many fields of creativity) without comparative discussion. The two-sentence explanation re this album: "Every song is a classic, from the messages of love to the anthems of revolution. But more than that, the album is a political and cultural nexus, drawing inspiration from the Third World and then giving voice to it the world over." Which is a long bow. I'll just note that this album is not consistently rated particularly highly by music critics generally, and go back to rating it as I see fit. I was prompted to consider whether my top ratings may be unduly reactive to what thrills or challenges me - can an album be Wonderful while also calm? Yes it can (eg Ichiko Aoba), but maybe I won't find it Wonderful unless at some level it is musically stimulating for me. This one is not quite there, I'll call it Very Good, 8/10.
This album mixes funky vibes with more pop to Marley's reggae. Probably his best songs are in this album. It is an album full of love with notes of resistance and hope, this enchanting ballade is a great melange resulting in what should make the future: love and equality of the people. Let's get together to fight with love against the big fish eating the small fishes, and let's not worry about a thing because every little thing is gonna be alright as we are united. small note: this album is also clearly really religious.
Альбом для мене 3.5/5 Хороший інструментал, цікавий. Це просто не моє , я б не засмутиласяб, якщоб ніколи не почула його. Вайби альбому ти куриш травку на островах
The first song on the album started and my partner and I stop in our tracks to groove Good jams! Nice to play on a day off of work. Playing it in the living room, enjoying the music + the sound of birds outside. Very happy (:
I grew up around this kind of music so no matter how much different stuff I listen to, I'll always enjoy reggae like this a little bit, and who doesn't like bob Marley ?
Nice easy listening
++: So Much Things to Say, Exodus, Jamming, Turn Your Lights Down Low, Three Little Birds, One Love/People Get Ready +: Natural Mystic, The Heathen, Waiting in Vain +-: Guiltiness 7,9/10
great album, three little birds best song
An excellent album, contains some superb tracks.
Iconic sound can't give it less than 4. Jammin
Such a solid album with classic songs. Who wouldn't enjoy this?! It also reminds me of all of the morning Brazilian Jiujitsu sessions when the coach would put reggae on while we beat the hell out of each other.
Natural Mystic - 5/10, chill So Much Things To Say - 5/10, chill Guiltiness - 5/10, bruh sounds too similar other two The Heathen - 7/10, that instument in the background is nicccccceeee Exodus - 5/10, I like the extra energy in it. Its nice but just found myself getting a bit bored. Jamming - 5/10, liked the start got a bit repetitive Waiting in Vain - 6/10, better chill song Turn Your Lights Down Low - 8/10, holy shii absolute BANGER Three Little Birds - 6/10, ok its a good song but ive heard this song on some ad before somewhere so it dont hit. Wait maybe its not that bad, its hella catchy. Ok ill boost the rating a lil bit. One Love/ People Get ready - 6/10, its good but u know ive heard this a millon times somewhere. I aint boosting this one. Ok its decent ill boost just a lil bit. I guess its popular for a reason. I havent really listened to this kind of music before. I can see myself just listening to this when I just wanna relax, maybe on a walk or hike. In all the songs I loved the intros and the instrumentals are some of the best ive ever heard. Its not as mentally stimulating as the music I usually listen to; I can actaully feel my brain just relaxing, pretty cool. I defo wanna listen to more music like this.
Quality from a legend.
Eh, 2 reggae albums in a row, really, Generator?? Anyway, this is by far the better of the two. Reggae is not really my thing, but old Bob was quite the cream of the crop in that regard. Highlights here are 'Exodus', 'Three Little Birds' (I never knew that was the actual title) and 'One Love'. Honourable mention to 'Jamming'. Torn between a 3 and a 4 here, so I'll be generous and go with a 4 stars.
Very chill, I like.
Liked this a lot
very good album especially for summer
Classic Bob Marley with some of his most famous songs!
I'm only twenty albums into the list and it's already the second BMATW album I get. I liked this more than the other one. Ok I admit I listened to this while actually napping with my 4 months baby, but it sounded nice (at least the parts I was awake)
Not a big fan of reggae. But you can tell just how much effort and calming this type of music is. Type of music you listen to at the beach. Lowkey a vibe.
Jah bless
Not a fan of reggae however Bob has a lot of talent. Side one is listenable while rhe second side is almost a greatest hits.
Listened while working so not the closets listen but liked it a lot more than I’d have thought
first half of the album is decent (kinda mid), but everything from the title track and after is amazing
Natural Mystic - 4/5 So Much Things to Say - 3.5/5 Guiltiness - 3.5/5 The Heathen - 3.5/5 Exodus - 4.5/5 Jamming - 4/5 Waiting in Vain - 4/5 Turn Your Lights Down Low - 3.5/5 Three Little Birds - 5/5 One Love / People Get Ready - 4/5 This definitely feels more like a greatest hits album than anything, which is fitting because a majority of Marley's "greatest hits" come from this album in particular. I'm not a guy for reggae but this was a decent and chill listen all the way through. I didn't realize Three Little Birds was on here and that song is nostalgic for me for some reason. Definitely did not get a contact high by listening to this. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Three Little Birds, Exodus
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
It's a great album. Personally it perhaps suffers from the fact that I've heard most of the Legend album songs so many times. Still very good mind.
What an enjoyable album; another gem of an album that can be regarded as a classic as it truly stands the test of time. Prevails whether you’re a reggae fan or not.
Super happy, laidback reggae. Simple but good. Favourites: So Much Things To Say, Jamming, Turn Your Lights Down Low, Three Little Birds
It’s not really my kind of music that I’d listen to normally but enjoyed the upbeat happy nature of it, very relaxing
I prefer the earlier albums, especially Bob Marley And The Wailers Live!, but there's no BM album from Catch A Fire to Uprising that gets less than four stars.
solid
Listened to it while watering my backyard and planted flowers. Such a peaceful vibe without a care in the world.
I can just put this on and get into a vibe. Beautiful!
A really good album which I listened to once and really enjoyed and then put on again and nearly had a panic attack. There’s something about reggae music that is anathema to my brain. This makes me sad as theoretically it is a music I should enjoy.
It’s Bob Marley, what can ya say??
Better than I expected. A few hits, the rest pretty good.
So soothing and mellow; genius!
This album was exactly what I needed after coming back to work after being off for 10 days. Wasn't excited to go back to work, but this album put me in such a good mood, actually enjoyed my commute in. Thanks Bob Marley.
Clutch
Good album for chilling
Classic
So relaxing! Felt like I was sitting on a beach somewhere
The second Bob Marley & The Wailers album that I've gotten! In my opinion it's a step up from "Catch a Fire". A very intentioned 10 song 37 minute experience whose themes of politics, revolution and hope in the face of oppression betray it's laid back atmosphere in the best way possible. Even though I can admit I prefer more "exhilarating" genres to that of reggae, I recognise this album's importance to music history and applaud it's timeless uplifting message that endures to the present day.
looove the vibe, relajar
I mean this is definitely good stuff, although a good bit soured by the poster-hanging, “just smoked weed for the first time and now this is who i am” college kids of yore. Some of his most iconic music is on this record but other than that i don’t see myself coming back to this much.
So many classics that it could be a greatest hits collection. They're not all winners, but it's still a must own.
Probably the recording just hasn't aged as well
A really great album, great first impression of reggae!
Has some classic songs you heard when you were a kid and overall just a good relaxed album
This was pretty good. An enjoyable set of reggae tunes. A lot of great songs here. Something that I will definitely listen to again. A solid 4
Classic and very good
