Reviews (page 6 of 13)
Probably the best album we’ve had. I’m not rating it 5 to spite certain group members though.
Classic reggae, not entirely my thing, becomes grating after extended listening.
Classic
I've never had a bob marley phase but I've smoked just enough weed in my life that it really is undeniable
A tentpole reggae release if there ever was one. So many iconic songs dot the tracklist. Marley truly excelled and brought the genre to so many new listeners because of his versatility, charm, and genuinely far-reaching lyricism. While I feel the record has some pacing issues overall, it is undeniable how important this album is to popular music history.
Classic quality reggae album. Pretty much as expected, having been a fan of Bob Marley. Heard a lot of these before!
Four stars for the classics.
Great second half. First half good, just not as good.
After a sluggish start the album gets going with the title track. Side in particular is just one great tune after another. The production of the anglicised reggae is superb.
a standard
Great album with songs everyone knows. A very calm and easy listen, though the second half is noticeably better and has all three big hits from this album. Very solid, would listen again.
Very good album and a classic, just not as much my type of genre. Nevertheless, I will listen again!
Bob Marley always goes hard!
Exodus has an incredible flow, you feel looked after as Bob Marley carries you from one smooth jam to another. His songs are so unignorably well written, that what would otherwise be an obscure genre is known the world over. He is one of the great levelers whose music works for pretty much everyone.
Exodus gets a solid to high 4 for me, the second half especially is hit after hit.
Don't worry about a thing... I strive to be as chill as Mr. Marley, not successful, but I try. Short of a five but a three would be criminal.
Great! I enjoyed this album a lot.
Somehow, "Three Little Birds" is the only one I've heard on here before. Anyway, this one ends up much the same as all the other reggae I've heard before: something I really enjoy listening to, but the sentiments of the lyrics don't really stick with me, even though I know that the genre is quite political.
Refreshing listen. 4/5
It's good. Hard to evaluate an album like this the same way as the others on the list when I've heard half of the songs a billion times
classic album but i learned the context for these kinds of songs from the description on apple music, reggae is definitely a blind spot for me
my first reggae album and okay cool now it won’t be my last
Kuulostavat melko samoilta kaikki, lilja biisejä
I'm a fan of Ska, rocksteady, and reggae. Reggae can be too slow for me at times, which is the only reason this doesn't hit 5 for me.
Very pleasant to listen to but didn’t have many hits
Groovy, phaser-filled, deep bass music I know I will get from any Marley/Wailers album. The flow of the album isn't as smooth as other releases, but the message is very apparent. Probably the greatest side 2 of any of there records. Perhaps the intention was to have two separate thematic sides? Eureka. Genius.
everytime i listen to reggae im just like, shit i gotta listen to more reggae. ts dope.
Great album, very easy listening
7.8/10 such a great album, i believe most of the songs are liberalism centred and the fact that it's also religion related made it kind of relatable to me considering i left mine secretly a while ago, also i could associate it with gaza as it's my homeland especially the last track overall great album i loved it so much
Kyllähän tää on kunnon kesämusaa ja mielellään kyllä kuuntelee ja fiilistelee. Ei oo kiire mihkää
Kylhän tää on aika hyvä levy. Parit ikivihreetkin.
Another good one. "Three Little Birds" is a personal fave, but the whole album was good. 3 1/2 stars.
I am not the biggest fan of reggae at all. I have said why in a previous review. But I must say this is the best reggae album I have ever heard!
Classic album. Nothing bad to say.
good albun
One Love and some other great tracks. It is not all my cup of tea but still great reggae.
It's a nice album, really meaningful and chilly
Listened to while stormed rolled through 4/27. Exodus is a good song.
I found this very much to be an album of contrasting halves. The first half of the album was quite standard reggae, and while I didnt feel a petulant need to skip through any of the tracks, none of them were found particularly memorable. However, from the title track onwards, it just becomes a fabulous, happy collection of tunes with songs like Jammin' and Three Little Birds just brightening the day. And we even get Bob doing soul with the excellent Turn Your Lights Down Low. It makes for a slightly inconsistent album, but they can't all be classics. 4 stars.
The greatest hits was aptly labeled. He’s a Legend. For better or worse he is THE reggae artist. This album had more depth than I expected. The band perceptually has the best groove ever a lyrically the two sides split into rumination I enjoyed.
I have actually been listening to this album a lot over the past few weeks, so it was great it popped up again. It’s almost a desert island disks episode in one album - lots of the tracks are memorisable for different reasons at different times of life. Two of the more ballad-y tracks on side two (Waiting in Vain, Turn your lights down low), are less to my taste but the rest is fab. Because of those two tracks it’s not a 5 star album but pretty close. 4.5 Number tracks: 10 fave track: exodus 21/04/26
I haven’t listened to this since I was probably in 9th or 10th grade when I thought bob marley, weed, and tie dye would solve all my problems. One of them definitely helps. Lovely little throw back.
Today is 4/20 and I got this album, which is objectively hilarious. Anyway, great album. I feel like half of Bob Marleys Legend comp comes here.
FINALLY we got a reggae album, and it's a great one! Bob Marley and his band of Wailers deliver us a solid 37 minutes of pure roots reggae goodness. How can you hate this? How can you even feel sad while it's on?
I don't know if I'm much of a Reggae listener, but it's hard to go lower here. It's rare for a guy to evoke a whole genre! The rhythms are smooth and hypnotize the listener into a good mood. Love it! Standouts: Guiltiness • The Heathen • Exodus • Three Little Birds • One Love/People Get Ready
Very Good.
Inte min genre typiskt men det här _har nåt_
Alltid härligt!
Raggae när det är som bäst!
Fucking Bob. Such a great album.
a nice relaxing album with good vibes to listen to while working
What does Bob Marley leave in the toilet
JAMMIN IN DA NAME A DA LORD 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Album got stronger as it went on. Collection of hits were phenomenal, non-hits didn't really move the needle as much. Waiting in vain tops the album for me.
4.5
Good stuff. I was surprised at how many I recognised. Will I become a regular Bob Marley listener? Sort of doubt but I respect it.
Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? ✅ Would buy on Vinyl? ✅
This is not something I would ever choose to listen, but it's a great version of what it is. Obviously some iconic songs on the album and good vibes throughout. I honestly should listen to stuff like this to help me chill out and worry less lol.
4/5 jah
I like this. Calm and enjoyable. The lyrics don't mean much to me, but the music is good.
Really enjoyed. Excellent.
Lowkey not that bad. Bob marley makes good stuff
A Reggea-Classic. I prefer the production of Dub, but this is still a great listen.
I like the earlier records better, but this one is pretty damn sweet: laid back production and jams, optimistic and melodic lines, all in all, a delight to listen to. Thanks, Bob.
So many classic all-timers. The lesser known tracks are almost as good.
I dreamt that mr bob marley descended from the skies he looked at me said son take this handing me what looked like a j and i accepted thanking him. It was only after he had ascended again that i looked down and saw: in my hand was a live beating heart blood and gore dripping and this was when i woke up👍
This album really gets going about halfway through, starting with the title track. I'm not a huge reggae fan, but this is probably the best reggae album I know.
This record was quite relaxing. Favourite Track(s): Natural Mystic, Exodus Least Favourite Track(s): Guiltiness
It was an overall pretty good album. It was fun, had me dancing, and just felt like summer. Which was perfect since it was the highest it’s been for a while (19 in early April!) I don’t know if I would see my self listening to many of the songs on the daily but its a vibe all together, bonus point since it got me outside.
Good stuff, mellow music. But I think reggae is not able to reach 5 stars due to the repetitive rythym.
Didn’t realise the political and historical place of this album in Marley’s and Jamaica’s history, as well as his own exile. It’s SUCH a groove and rhythm. Pleasure to listen to and so easy and smooth. And then has some of the big bangers on here too. Great album. And 7:30 of Exodus isn’t long enough! Passes with ease. Feels like the album is split in two. But all enjoyable and serves a different purpose. Second half gets the edge for me though. I’m going for a second spin as soon as it’s finished.
Reggae classic. The arrangements still sound fresh and crisp.
It's been over two years since I last heard a Bob Marley record. That one was Natty Dread, which I felt was a little too sonically repetitive for its own good. Exodus, though, has much stronger staying power in online music communities. So it must be better, right? Well, Marley and the Wailers certainly have a penchant for every composition being almost the same tempo, same harmonic mode, same time 4/4 time signature with accents on the 2nd and 4th beats, same instrumentation (effectively) in every song... and so on. To be fair to them, the music bursts with colour and emotion as a result. But it also gets old fast. Over half the songs start with the exact same rapid drum fill. (Seriously. Go through them one by one.) The instruments are played consistently and skilfully, particularly the keyboards and soft brass. Natural Mystic starts the album off fairly well, but it's certainly nothing spectacular. The second track, So Much Things To Say, makes for a noticeable improvement. Those backing vocals are gorgeous, and thankfully for the masses, they're used again in most later songs. Not a fan of the song Guiltiness, even though the transition into it is pretty sweet. The next big standout comes in the form of Jamming, which presents this great chord progression setting up a jam-like atmosphere (no kidding) for a few blissful minutes. Waiting In Vain is also strong, while Turn Your Lights Down Low is not (in fact, it's one of the few genuinely weak songs on here. No new musical ideas are presented). But then we get to the huge track, Three Little Birds. Wait, *this* is the song with the "every little thing / is gonna be alright" hook? I feel like I've found a long-lost friend. The chorus is so darn recognisable that it just about pushes this album to 5 stars regardless of one or two misses earlier on. (But I can't go against my principles.) One Love / People Get Ready continues the run of overwhelmingly feelgood songs. "Let's get together and feel alright." Right on, man! 4/5 Key tracks: So Much Things To Say, Three Little Birds, One Love / People Get Ready
This one has a bunch of the songs I know.
Although the songs are repetitive, as reggae tends to be, they still house a lot of meaning that stands up against oppression and evil. Bob Marley was truly a gift to this world.
I love bob Marley so much and it’s a great vibe to tell me how much summer is gonna be, this album is peak and is definitely a save
Super chill, very enjoyable
Listened to this a couple years ago in preparation for the biopic but didn’t remember much. Enjoyed it more this time around. 1 listen.
Expectation: -> No one better when in that reggae mood. After listening: -> Some of the most popular and familiar reggae ever made is on this album. Track ranking: Birds Jammin Lights down Mystic (not cultist) Exodus One love Heathen Guilt So Much
When to listen: on a beach, somewhat dingy but the sun is shining and the sand is soft and there’s a slight breeze. Like many listeners here I’m not a huge reggae person. The music is good but repetitive.
Classic. Brings back many memories, both from childhood and life now. Jamming is probably one of my favorite songs oat.
Good bases, they feel like a comforting mattress to allow the lyrics and choruses to flow excellently, despite having the same guitar rhythm they always have arrangements that make each song unique. An enjoyable album
Fav songs: Exodus, Three Little Birds
Bueno para recordar viejos tiempos
I did not expect to like this, because I found the previous BM album I heard here extremely boring. But this was great. Liked it, will definitely listen again
This is such a classic album that its almost disappointing. I think I've heard the sounds and even these specific songs many times. The experience is probably the lesser for it. As a lover of many kinds of Jamaican music, I think of this as a standard album. Its well performed, but also typical.
Thinking about getting into reggae!
3.5 stars Side 2 is basically a good chunk of Legend. The album tracks are pretty decent, not amazing but consistent stuff. I’d throw this on if I wanted a proper Wailers album spinning.
pretty good, favorite songs r the heathen, three little birds, punky raggae party.
This albums is hypnotic! The hits stand out but the lesser known tracks have an incredible groove.
It’s reggae. What more is there to say? A good one to reach for when you are in the mood which, for me, is not often. This is a great album. Crisp, tight, and iconic. 4/5
Love this
Muy buen álbum!!! Es súper chill
Bob Marley has to be the most approachable reggae singer there is. what a finale album
I love Bob Marley but have listened to Legend much more than any single album. I love this because it has at least 5 or 6 songs from Legend which means it contains his most pop songs.
it was alright.
Reggae classic. Smokes on the beach.
I'm not that familiar with reggae and what I have heard hasn't interested me much. But this album is hard to deny. Just an awesome, chill, vibe that feels like a day at the beach. Includes a few of Marley's biggest hits. I think there's a bit more funk/blues elements in here that stand out from other reggae I've heard.
154/1001 First listen. I’m jamming.! 7/10
Marley is an icon. His music was so much bigger than songs, it was a movement, freedom, change and impacted the world so much. His impact is so important that it's hard to criticize. The only thing I could say is it's repetitive but it's also so perfect as chants and protest music. I can't say I will listen to it all the time but it is amazing and monumental.
Sort of the classic Reggae album, I was surprised to realize that no, I don't think I've listened to this all the way through before. The singles here sort of scream a White Boy Reggae vibe, which isn't really their fault but definitely probably steered me away from this. All in all tho, it's classic for a reason.
Classic. 2 Marley albums in a row!
god
Mooi album vol met mooie liedjes
Love: Natural Mystic, Exodus, Jamming, Waiting in Vain, One Love/People Get Ready
Liked religious themes Use of live instruments and feel and power of Bob Marley voice Something peaceful about it Really like waiting in vain and jamming
Reggae has never been a huge part of my life, but I’ve always enjoyed Bob Marley. He seems to be the most accessible, and for good reason. This album is a gem. The songwriting is really good, the lyrics are deep, and the message is clearly articulated. This seems like a relaxing summer day on the beach listening to some great, chill music.
4,5 stars
Never been overly enamoured by Bob Marley's music when coming across his most popular tunes, but I have to say this album won me over.
Best Reggae in town
8/10
Vibed
sure, why not
I hope I'm not wrong when I say that there is a general misconception about Bob Marley's music being basically about weed and love, or at least I think this is the idea that people who don't listen to him gets, and I'm including myself in this group. Well, not anymore. This album showed my how strong and political reggae can be. Not only there are a lot of great social commentaries and calls for rebellion, but I did also think Bob Marley does transmit incredibly well a subtle sense of sadness and oppression in the first half of the album, since the second one is more positive and uplifting in terms of both lyrics and emotion, excluding "Turn Your Lights Down Low" which is a more of a ballad. Besides the lyrics, the album is also fulled with incredibly hypnotic rhythms and catchy melodies. And for a genre that can be very minimalist, I think it is very detailed, featuring a great range of instruments, like trumpets, various layers of guitars, and some piano, with the inclusion of a sort of very psychedelic sound effects. However, as passionate the project might be, I don't really have any super strong emotions about it. I still do really liked it and I have a great appreciation for the political messaging and entrancing sound. I just needed to clarify that I don't find this to be the best thing ever.
Bought the sunshine to march in edinburgh
Solid classic
Classic album. Enjoyed it.
****A good, easy listening album
A happy album, it changes your mood for the day.
Det är Bob Marley, alltså svänger det. En fyra.
First listen…I only knew the tracks from Legend….and they’re some of the best tracks on it. Sounds sublime. Laid back and cool vibe. Given I couldn’t get on at all with Catch a Fire at all when that came up, I have to admit tha this album really surprised me. Can see why this is a classic. Love it - going into rotation. 4
2/27 Funny how this gets picked for the day right after I pick up the greatest hits CD. The album itself is pretty good
it's a bit like. when you've heard one song you've heard them all. but not bad
My dad listened to Bob Marley’s Legend all the time growing up, so there are a handful of songs I’m already very familiar with on this album. I think six songs are going to be completely new for me. • Natural Mystic is a good introductory track. It’s very exemplary of the Wailers sound • So Much Things To Say had some really nice stuff going on with the backing vocals • I know a lot of Bob Marley’s songs start with small drum fills, but it’s funny that So Much Things To Say and Guiltiness start with such similar ones • I really like The Heathen. It’s definitely my favourite so far • Exodus is an absolutely classic song. The riff, percussion, vocals and lyrics. Everything is so good in this song. And when the horns start coming in during the second chorus it gets even better. I also forgot how long it is, it doesn’t feel like it’s six minutes long • Jammin’ is another song I know really well, I love how calm it is • I actually recognise Waiting in Vain too, even though I didn’t know the title • Three Little Birds is one of the most relaxing songs ever written. It has such a beautiful melody and lyrics • One Love is such a nice song. I really like the use of Curtis Mayfield’s lyrics in the verse I very much enjoyed this album, it’s a really nice listen from front to back. The second half was a lot stronger than the first in my opinion, but there weren’t really any weak songs. The lyrics are still very relevant to this day, and you can hear how Bob Marley and the Wailers inspired future bands’ sounds. Favourite song: Exodus
Would buy
Three Little Birds, One Love, Jamming
Despite his cultural ubiquity, I'd never really listened to Bob Marley before. Just a lovely soundscape combined with hopeful political lyricism, what's not to love?
Not into reggae at all, however, this is a great record to listen to in the background and filled with hits
No. 369/1001 Natural Mystic 4/5 So Much Things To Say 4/5 Guiltiness 4/5 The Heathen 4/5 Exodus 4/5 Jamming 4/5 Waiting In Vain 5/5 Turn Your Lights Down 4/5 Three Little Birds 5/5 One Love / People Get Ready 4/5 Average: 4,2 All around great listening experience. Classic album.
We jammin and not worrying
There is just something about this album.
I don't know how a body can stay still while listening to this album. Definitely more familiar with the songs on the second half, but enjoyed the entire album.
This album is the perfect microcosm of Bob Marley & The Wailers. If you met somebody who never heard of Bob Marley and you wanted to quickly and efficiently describe their music, make them listen to this album! It's very laid back but the driing, rolling bass lines keep it punchy. It starts a little slow, not showcasing Bob Marley's strong voice, but builds momentum as the album goes on, ending with some of their best hits.
really good reggae album probably bob marleys best. Just good vibes overall it feels like. Waiting in vain has a really nice sound to it and might be my favorite off the album. Turn your lights down is just a chill beautiful reggae love song Youve got the classics like three little birds, natural mystic, jamming and exodus. its interesting how it showcases the move from jamaica to london after an assasination attempt on bob marley and draws parallels to the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. overall goated reggae album and i like it a lot
Surely has some of Bob's best work - Natural Mystic, Jamming, Waiting in Vain, Exodus and the other obvious picks that absolutely everyone knows. Still holds its own. Classic
Waiting in vain y Turn your lights down low, fueron mis favoritas.
Get me to a beach asap
A fun jam!
So many hits! Brought a little sunshine to a cold day in February
Not as many hits as you'd expect but still a joyous album
This album could be a greatest hits album. No one could or has replaced Marley. A serious joyous record.
Good vibes
Man, this is a good album. Short, sweet - all killer, no filler. 8/10
Rico rico rico
really great, what i would put on if i wanted to listen to reggae which isn't super often; 4 stars for me
I didn't think I liked reggae but this is better than I realized. I thought reggae was repetitive but it's not.
Love this. Twas awesome. So many famous tunes and very nice to have a different chill genre.
Mixed feelings on this one. If you think of what cliche reggae music sounds like.......it sounds like this. Let me preface this whole thing by saying, I know nothing about reggae or Bob Marley in general other than a couple of his hits. This album was made after Marley and his wife were shot in Jamaica in an assassination attempt and he made the decision to leave the country and go to England. I was a bit surprised that wikipedia quotes one critic as saying this doesn't sound like reggae of the time, but British rock with a reggae facade on top. Listen, there isn't much time, I have a new album tomorrow, so I did very quick thumbing around at some other songs. I think Bob sounds more or less the same from some of his previous albums, but he is very different from 1970's Jimmy Cliff and Desmond Dekker. "I can see clearly now the rain is gone" is a reggae song. "You can get it if you really want" is a reggae song, which is just not what I thought. Or Monkey Man by Toots and the Maytals. Or Pied Piper by Bob and Marcia. Yeah, ok, Bob Marley was different. So basically Bob Marley became popular with white college kids because of the obsession with weed, which is kind of where the association of Jamaica and weed came from. As far as how beloved he was in Jamaica prior to this album, I have no idea; but I imagine surviving an assassination attempt and leaving your home country would be quite traumatic. The album still sounds exactly what I expect of reggae, but are these my expectations of reggae BECAUSE of Bob Marley specifically? Some songs I listened to were pretty similar to this style, but seems like some popular songs didn't sound anything like this, so i'm not sure. Right now i'm just not able to put in the time to do the research on this that it probably deserves, but in terms of just being a representative of reggae on this list, it is great.........although i'm sure this isn't the only Bob Marley album.
Great
Amazing reggae dub the beggining of it as a global sensation
I thought it was nice. Reggae holds a certain place in my heart. It's far from my favorite genre, but I still enjoy it. This album I definitely did. I love the themes and the slinky rhythms that came with it. one of my better listens on this site.
Never really went in for Bob, but it’s still a solid album
Natural Mystic is a great opener but the next few tracks didn't really stand out to me much. Then the title track really picks things up despite its long runtime and is followed by Jamming and Waiting in Vain. The last couple of tracks end the album in a uplifting, positive mood.
Uma lenda goddamn
felt like i was high listening to this album but it was so good
Probably one of the most influential albums of modern history!
Gran disco.
They would do anything To materialize their every wish… 4 stars.
Not listened to this for a long time.
I have never thought I'll ever like a reggae album, but here we are. It's enjoyable even though it is unmistakably a raggae record. If I instantly replay the album after the first listening, it's usually because I'm not sure of what I think about it or I was not sufficiently focused on the music to actually grade it. But here I did that just because I like the record and wanted to listen to it again. "Exodus" was the biggest surprise, as normally this kind of long and steady piece would annoy me immensely, especially in this genre. But I actually quite liked it. "Three Little Birds" and "Jamming" were my favourite songs, but I enjoyed all of them. Very big surprise.
The entire vibe of this album is just so wholesome, it's impossible to hate this. Reggae isn't usually my thing, but Bob Marley is just so talanted that his music still appeals to me, even as someone who generally doesn't care for reggae.
This is the first album that i've got recommended to listen to by the albumsgenerator. I'm not a fan of reggae, but it was kinda funny 40 minutes expirience. I think this album is pretty good and it gives a massive summer vacation vibe when you dgaf about your work and other problems ☀️🥥🏝 Also it turned out that there is one song that i've already heard and it was surprising for me! But anyway it's not my vibe
Really good. Still sounds fresh and lots of serious hits on here.
Impossible to hate
I would listen to this on the beach! they are all good since they kinda sound similar
Really blissed me out. Forgot this existed. Happy to be reminded
Always a Bob Marley fan, and this album is a great one. He has a certain emotion in his music and quite the story teller. You can never go wrong with reggae.
Great Bob Marley album. The kind of album we could use a little more these days. Bigs hits in this one.
A chill classic
4/5, an excellent album for those who enjoy reggae; the average person will find at least two or three great songs here too. I was admittedly a little worried when I received this album in my queue. Reggae is one of those haiku genres where it has enough rigidly defining features that it can feel monotonous a few songs in, and even good albums can feel old fast unless you're in the mood for it. That said, I think Exodus is great the whole way through, and it rarely overstays its welcome on any given song. There are some legendary ones on here, and most of the lesser known pieces are fantastic on their own. I will admit that the instrumentation, the rhythm, can be samey, but Marley and his band take advantage of what is often a weakness for other reggae bands. Marley's vocals are sincere, warm, and comforting, and they take center stage against what is a pretty consistent background of down-down-up strumming and wah effect'd guitar. It's a joy. Another thing that needs to be said, which is present on other Wailer songs: the few spotlights of lead guitar are *brilliant.* I'm most familiar with Marley's "Natty Dread" album, and was absolutely enthralled by the guitar solo in "No Woman No Cry" as a kid; I am so pleased to find the same brilliance here, mainly in "Waiting in Vain."
this is such a beautiful, serene album. you can’t help but love it. his voice is just perfection.
very nice album- i think it would be better playing out loud, not in my headphones. seems like a classic album to have on vinyl. feeling like a fish in a coral reef listening to this album
Excellent album, it's a classic and very timeless. I like the lyrical themes, of religion, of breaking free from oppression, of love. It was the ultimate morning vibe and brought a lot of joy to me this day.
iiii vou nem dizer oq isso ta parecendooooo FAVS (top 3): natural miystic, the heathen, three little birds mençoes honrosas: exodus, jamming, one love/people get ready GENTE BEM VIBEZZZ EU AMOOOOO nota final: 4/5
Beautiful songs with laid back vibes, what more could you want? Bravo, Bob. 8.5/10
Perhaps i judged you too harshly When i listened to this album for the AM top 100 list i ranked it at 73 on my personal list, which wasnt a great review. but i did kind of speed run it. its only 30 something minutes long so i blasted through my 3 required listens in under 2 hours driving home from a trip away in the van on a relatively low volume as to not wake jess who was asleep in the passenger seat. in doing so i missed a lot of the things that make the album great. obviously i know three little birds and one love are great and classic songs. but writings in vain and the heathen also have little bits to them you only notice when you concentrate and in my case use headphones. i particularly enjoyed the use of autotune on the title track. whilst the frequent religious lyrics dont do anything for me i can still appreciate the lyricism on this album whilst not a perfect match for my tastes i definitely enjoyed this album upon revisiting it more than a 73 so maybe i need to reconsider some of my AM rankings at some point 4
every time i hear about bob marley and the wailers i think of my aunt. i like my aunt and this album also
Ja priem
Bob Marley is a musical saint among men. There is nothing but good vibes, good lyrics, and good music to be found here. I particularly enjoy music that dives in beyond themes of heartbreak and longing. I particularly enjoyed the way this album was constructed in two halves: the first speaks out against bad politics and the second brings it back to love and faith. This structure makes a lot of sense and the message is very clear. Like I mentioned previously, the music is fairly simple, yet still accomplishes what it intends to and even more. Bob's accent makes him so recognizable and the hybrid of Jamaican and pop works very well. The songs are well written, well performed, and produced well. Mixing is clean while still feeling laid-back and cool. Exodus actually was not one of my favorite tracks. The final two tracks really took it home for me. In Three Little Birds, when Bob says every little thing is gonna be alright, I believe him. When he says to thank and praise the Lord and we'll feel alright, I also believe him. I'm grateful he shared this part of his soul with the world. It didn't completely blow me away like my other 5 stars, but I finished the album feeling really good, and that has merit. I'm gonna say 4.5/5 and round down.
Fun and good melodies, but I liked catch a fire better
This isn't my type of music but hard to argue against the bang on classics on this album.
We jammin
Reggae done to a superb standard. Hard to beat really.
Accidentally listened to this on shuffle, but it still slaps. Not really a reggae guy, but I still found myself singing along and grooving to some of the songs on this. I can't see myself listening to the full album again but for sure some of the songs like Exodus and Heathen are going in my playlists.
Pleasantly surprised. Really enjoyable album, but it sounds like a big blur of one song. Aside from the bangers we already knew, the intros to The Heathen and Exodus might have been my favorite parts of the album. Robert knows how to pump out hits.
Obviously great music even if reggae isn’t my usual jam. A little more annoying to listen to when I’m sober
really good. jammin, 3 little birds, and one love all on one album. Very strong 4
A very lovely album, great instrumentals. Sets the mood fantastically - even in the deepest darkest winter I was able to feel like it's a sunny summer's day. Such a carefree, happy mood. However, reggae is not really my jam and while I really love to hear an occasional song, listening to the whole album all at once felt like it lasts and lasts for too long as the songs are so similar to each other. I'd rate it 4 stars for musicality, lightness and freshness it packs if I was more unbiased by my own tastes, but for my very personal enjoyment it's more like 3 stars. Still a fun and lovely listen!
Every song is a prayer, whether it be for love, freedom, sex…and the whole record was given a post prod treatment in the UK with additional instrument tracks.
First half is some soulful reggae, the second half is filled with classics that liberal arts college students would get high to after putting plastic bags over the smoke detectors in their dorm rooms.
Very enjoyable reggae, no way to hate Bob marley
Probably the best Bob Marley album and my favorite reggae album. There are lots of great classic tracks on this one and both, the maestro himself and the Wailers grooving at their peak. Aston Barrett's bass playing is especially juicy. Tracks 5-10 are 5/5, but not quite the whole album.
Cute is exactly the right word. Feel good summer nostalgia. Would listen to again.
Ironically for an album recorded in a political purgatory while thousands of miles from home … when it comes to Exodus, resistance is futile. It’s easy to take Marley for granted. The rhythms, melodies, cadences and attitudes that make him have long since transcended even the iconic. He’s a fact now, closer to a dead metaphor than an active figure of speech. And that’s initially how it feels to listen to this album; you’re at wake for someone you somehow know though have never actually met. What’s familiar makes for an uncomfortable feeling, there’s no pleasure in recognition. To hear this album, though, is another thing entirely, and rested for me on something like an act of resurrection. Forget Marley the myth and focus on Marley the man. From there what resisted any sensible interpretation – music that’s been etiolated not due to a lack of merit, but instead because of the billions of Bob Marley “products” that have littered the world since his death and subsequent canonisation by the cultural logic of late capitalism – is suddenly wide open. Surprises aren’t short in supply. “Natural Mystic” is followed by a noodling guitar that seems, at times, to be mocking the singer; “The Heathen” combines meditative chanting with stirring, sci-fi adjacent keys to achieve an effect I wouldn’t want to be driving under; “Waiting In Vain” lilts with a melancholy that seems about to drown poor old Bob (the middle 8 is about as animated as you’re likely to see him). And then there’s the stuff that isn’t surprising at all – the half dozen songs here that I’ve listened to maybe 500 times in my life, but never really heard. So yeah, Exodus is inevitable. Marley the man trumps the myth every time. (And, cosmic coincidences; a happy birthday to mine today, too.)
Not my fave bob marley album but love it nonetheless
Excellent! I could listen to Bob all day long. What a talent he was.
It was really calming and relaaxing, like you’re on vacation!!
As always with the best reggae, I actually learn something - the history of a Jamaica I wouldn't know w/o this music: 'They sold Marcus Garvey for rice, ooh / I'll never forget, no way / They turned their backs on Paul Bogle, hey, hey.' I didn't know who Paul Bogle was - National Hero of Jamaica and one of the leaders of the 1865 Morant Bay protesters - and now I'm happy I do. But also like the best reggae, these tracks aren't essayistic, post-colonial diatribes, but ventures into the depths of the feel-good, especially on the second half of this record. While Exodus does not electrify me as much as Catch a Fire, my favorite Wailers album, this is still very good. My only cavil is that a few of the tunes attain the sensibilities of too-tepid easy listening.
I thoroughly enjoyed the listen. He reminds me of a musical Vonnegut. Using repetition to hammer the point home, but poetically. Talking about difficult subjects with compassion and wisdom. Finding joy and purpose in the hopeless. All while bringing a warmth of Jamaican musicality.
enjoyed it
Very solid record, got some classics on the b-side as well
boogie
Classic
I like Bob Marley, he is peak Regae
I enjoyed Exodus more than Natty Dread and also think it's wholistically stronger. Therefore, my rating for this one is higher as well. Top tracks: Natural Mystic, Jamming, Three Little Birds
When most people think of Bob Marley, they think of Exodus. The most popular songs are pretty good, but I don't think it's fair to Marley that, generally, he's remembered through these songs exclusively. I think several of the tracks on this album outdo Three Little Birds and One Love. It's still a great listen, though.
Title track is amazing, and the first three songs rip. The three mega hits are great in the context of the album.
I used to joke that when you went to college your freshman year you were assigned a copy of Legend by Bob Marley. Most people's entry into Reggae music, and instantly recognizable. Half of this album is on that collection, with side B being mostly greatest hits. Solid reggae from one of the masters. Near perfect. Definitely a keeper.
When I first listened to Bob earlier in the 1001 albums we got Catch a Fire and thought all of his music was like that. Was I very wrong listening to this and his most popular songs. Last one was a 2 cause I think it just wasn't his best album. This one is way better and is a 4 for me.
finesa
Uplifting. While Bob Marley didn’t invent reggae, he certainly made it accessible to the world. And this album feels genre-defining. Marley’s voice is a beautiful thing. Can’t imagine not liking or at least appreciating this.
This is a damn good album. One of the things I love about reggae is how harsh and brutal the lyrics are compared to the absolute chill vibe of the music. Exodus is no different but it does have a softer side to it that makes this album very approachable. I like the album and reggae is always fun to listen to for a time, but it doesn't really stick with me. I can appreciate how good this album is, though it doesn't have that staying power for me. Exodus is packed with hits though that have obviously stood the test of time. Standouts are "Natural Mystic" "Jamming" "Three Little Birds" and "One Love." A solid 4.5/5 for me. Marley was truly a legend.
Day 140 All the songs follow pretty much the same template but it’s a pretty great template. Highlights Natural Mystic Three Little Birds One love
While not a favorite genre of mine, Bob Marley always manages to capture my ear. The hits are undeniable. Jamming is on of my favorite songs of all time.
Gosh I love Bob Marley. As a daughter of a Marley-loving dad, I know this album well and LOVE it! This album makes me think of sitting outside during a warm summer day, sunglasses on, dogs playing, and smoking a joint.
It was okay but most of the songs sounded the same. Maybe have to relisten but rn it’s a 7.5/10. Not bad
1001% making the beach playlist. I felt so warm listening to this and Night Mystic absolutely blew me away. I wanna go to a beach right now, open up a book, and put this on.
Classic Bob.
Never been a huge fan of reggae but this album is pretty undeniable. It's an instant mood lifter and feels "big" from beginning to end. The title track is pretty entrancing, you can really get lost in that deep groove for 7 min. Crazy that Bob Marley had the poise and presence to write One Love (& ended the album with it) after his assassination attempt.
Classic great album, immediately puts you in a good vibe and keeps it going the whole time.
Its interesting how you listen to these songs differently as a complete album, as opposed to just hearing one or two songs on their own, in that i find myself paying attention to completely different melodies and instruments. Lotta hits here, and even the lesser songs are good head nodders.
I love Bob Marley - even as an atheist, I can feel the spirituality on songs like "Natural Mystic". Songs are similar, but they're all great. He is iconic, and funny enough I had never really dove in to an album outside of his greatest hits "Legend" that I had a burned CD of. Really enjoyed it.
7/10
I worked at a beach restaurant for a brief time, so I heard this one many a times. The hits on here are obviously catchy and great, but I like the title track the best. The whole album is good vibes. 4
Such an excellent listen, and I was especially glad to hear some songs I hadn’t heard before that were also tremendous. There were just a couple songs I felt kind of lukewarm on, but this was a blast. Best Track: Waiting in Vain
im obsessed with exodus and jamming
When I was a kid, we would always listen to Bob Marley in the car. My dad complains to this day that his "Legends" CD was eventually stolen. So when listening to this album, I can't help but compare it to the greatest hits collection, which is kind of unfair, I know, but I still have the feeling that something is missing from this. That being said, this is probably still one of the greatest Reggae albums of all time.
Some classics on this album. Great revolutionary music, some powerful tunes.
Great album with songs everyone knows. A very calm and easy listen, though the second half is noticeably better and has all three big hits from this album. Very solid, would listen again.
Love this album, super great vibes
Groovy Chill vibes
Such a good album. One I can come back to time and time again. So many hits, great vibes, and just an all round good album.
Fun start to my day. Put a smile on my face.
loved the vibe. perfect album to start your day with. astonishing production.
I absolutely enjoyed listening to this album! It is no skip record. Bob Marley is absolute legend!
I love this album. The themes of his lyrics have changed. Understandably after an attempted assassination! It is laid back and chill, but the lyrics are more charged.
This is probably *the* Bob Marley album to listen to - bangers throughout, opening and ending spectacularly strong with Natural Mystic and One Love/People, Get Ready. Properly listening to the album I can feel the through lines between these grooves and the funk and pop genres. I’m really glad I was able to give this a proper listen. The bassline to So Much Things To Say literally invaded my dreams last night.
Four stars for "Waiting in Vain" alone.
Quite recognisable singing patterns and melodies it feels like. Overall a great feel good album, 4.5.
- Great album! - Saved most of it onto my playlist - Favorite is either Guiltiness or The Heathen
Went into this thinking I didn’t like reggae. I think I don’t like BAD reggae. This was really great just on in the background.
Felt like a Greatest Hits album. I had no idea that most of the songs I was already familiar with from this artist came from one album. It's one I can see myself returning to in the future, albeit likely mostly as background music. Was perfect for doing household chores on a snow day.
Made the snowy day a little less cold
great, 4+
Liked it as much as I thought I would.
This was fine. I saved "Three Little Birds," "One Love/People Get Ready," and "Jammin." Jammin was probably the one I liked the most that wasn't already super popular. I still cannot in good conscious rate this 5/5 stars so we're hitting 4/5.
Love the placement of Exodus in the middle of the album splitting it from the political/freedom/strength type songs/love songs. Every song so good with different emotions but a nice cohesion.
Triggering for smoking but also good vibes. Didn’t like heathen but there are lots of classics on there.
I'm gonna go real Youtube style with my comment here: I was trying to figure out what I would rate this album and then I hearkened back to a hard time in life when I was crying to myself and quietly singing "don't worry about a thing, 'cause every little thing gonna be alright". It got me through the tough moments and now everything is "alright".
"Exodus" is THE reggae album. Featuring overt political messaging alongside themes of love, it is also characterised by its generally laid back vibe, relaxed singing and pulsating bass. Essentially it makes you think of the beach. Apart from its great and consistent rhythm section, the album contains generally catchy tunes. Yet do not mistakes this for a perfect album. Some of the songs are a bit bloated in length, and the sound does not really change a lot from track to track. But the sound is great, and it deserves its status as an icon.
Weaker beginning for me with a great midway point, very much sticking the landing as well. Reggae doesn't really get better for me
Sounds pretty funky and r&b while very much having an island vibe
I like Bob Marley in small doses. A whole album is a little too much for me. The fact that ”the hits” come at the end helps though, as it gives some familiarity just as I’m starting to wonder when this will be over. It’s not quite a four, but too good for a three. I’m feeling generous, so rounding up. 4/5
Not a huge fan of the genre but gotta have mad respect for Bob Marley, plus this album had the only two songs I knew where Bob Marley
Yeah mon
A fantastic but brief album. Shockingly short with everything included. My only complaint with Marley is how much of it sounds incredibly similar. It feels almost like progressive rock the way the music fades into each song.
Not a fan of reggae but this is a well-made album
top!
3.8 It took me 3 hours to listen to this album cause I kept queing up his best of.
A reggae classic with one of my favourite reggae tunes (Natural Mystic) of all time kicking it off. No real fillers here, just good solid songs throughout.
Soooo relaxing…
I wish I knew more about Jamaican history, since there are a lot of references that are going over my head. I might have to find a good biography to really understand the impact!
Classic, Better than 4 stars but just not quite 5/5. I might change this rating later on tho...
I'm not the biggest reggae / Bob Marley fan, but this is a pretty good album. My biggest complaint is that some of the songs sound too similar, but besides that it's a good album. Low 4.
Definitely not the biggest Bob Marley fan but this album, especially the second half comes with the hits and is undeniable.
Marley is always a joy to listen to. Such singalongable songs
Bob Marley has this way of enriching every word he says with this otherworldly quality to the point where it all feels important. You have to stay engaged you have to let the music move your soul to let Marley fully envelope you in his music. All these songs are coated with the love of its author with every re listen being more beautiful than the last. Fav tracks: Natural Mystic, Exodus, waiting in vain, and One love/ people get ready
Guess it’s possible for me to love reggae after all. This is a banger. Natural Mystic, Exodus, Jamming, Three Little Birds all phenomenal. Dug the Marvin Gaye riff on Turn Your Lights Down too
I'm not a Reggae fan, but this is actually quite good.
I liked this one a lot, a nice way to start the morning. It had been a while since I listened to any Bob Marley, so an album with so many classics was a very lovely reintroduction.
Good vibes
Need to finish it, but it's Bob Marley.
Groovy. I heard Natty Dread a bit ago on the list and liked it but wasn't super into it. This one's more fluid, like wavy and soothing. The songs you've heard a million times fit nicely here. Really good album. Giving a 4 as I find myself wanting to return to it.
Reggae is hit or miss for me but I really enjoyed this one, easy to see how Marley ended up THE reggae artist
It’s Bob Marley, he’s good.
It's definitely the most popular album by Bob Marley and maybe his best. I think about Marley's songs a couple of times per year, so it's great to hear this album today. The album is great, sounds very good and really contrasting. The album masterfully mixes songs about religion, politics, love. "Waiting In Vain" is one of the saddest reggae songs I've ever heard. Meanwhile "Three Little Birds" is one of the most optimistic classic reggae songs. 4/5 —————————————— Liked: — The Heathen — Jamming — Waiting In Vain — Three Little Birds — One Love / People Get Ready
That’s Bob Marley alright
4.5 such a classic
I was always indifferent to Reggae, but this album is absolutely incredible. There's just a wonderful sense of chill throughout the entire production. I wonder why? 🌿💨
Really great first impressions. The production is pretty clean but in a way that lets everything really shine, especially the bass which is FAT. Reggae isn't a genre I'm too familiar with outside of some bands I enjoy that take heavy influence, but I really dig a lot of these songs musically and lyrically.
