This music is timeless. They will be listening to this 500 years from now be like “damn this is fitting for 2525”
I told myself going into this project that I would be stingy and reserve the “1”s and “5”s for the worst of the worst and the best of the best. That being said, this is as close to a “5” that I’ve come so far. The music is delightful, the message is powerful, and Bob’s voice is both amazing and unique at the same time. I could listen to this album on repeat without being disappointed and therefore stamp it with a justified “5”.
A true classic. Probably makes my top 25 albums of all time. This is vintage Marley, and the soulfulness and ease of his tone here is unmatched except by some of the finest R&B singers. He commands every moment and lulls you into his groove of relaxation. How many children were conceived to the songs on the B side of this album? This is peak baby-making music. I mean, I think I need a pregnancy test after listening to Turn Your Lights Down Low twice in a row. RIP Mr. Marley. May you be Forever Lovin Jah.
Music can truly lift your soul. After a long exhausting weekend this is exactly what I needed. I couldn't have chosed a better album to enjoy this evening.
I could happily listen to this record once a week for the rest of my life.
The absolute peak of reggae, really the perfect album to just sit and stare at something for 37 minutes and 27 seconds. 10/10.
Already owned.
Superb album
Bob Marley! Absolute legend. I’d only listened to the hits so far, but the deep cuts kept the good vibes rolling. Definitely recommend.
I thought I'd know all of this LP but infact, I didn't recognise about half of it. Some absolute classics with some new ones to discover. Uplifting and groovey! I give it 5.
It's crazy that I'm like 300 albums in and this is the first Bob Marley album on here. In fact, the only two reggae albums on the list so far weren't even Jamaican... great work Dimery. Anyway, this album was made in London after Marley survived an assassination attempt. Maybe that was his own Exodus. With Jammin and One Love, this album may be Marley's most famous, or well-known. I'm not sure it was his best--I think the earlier stuff with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer hits a little harder for me. But I can see why Demery would put this one if he only chose one. Here Marley is comfortable with the forces of his creativity. Natural Mystique is a great opening song, perhaps the best opener of all Marley's albums, or at least of the well-known tracks. The whole sound of the song conveys the message well. So Much Things to Say is a little formulaic, not among Marley's best for me. Guiltiness anis a good atmospheric tracks, though not among Marley's strongest. The Heathen has a really cool mantra-ish rhythm--a great deep cut. Starting with the title track, the rest of the songs are all super well-known. Exodus, Jammin and One Love are definitive classics. I'm a huge Marley and reggae fan, but I don't love Turn Your Lights Down low, and find Three Little Birds and Waiting in Vain on the average side. I listened to the version with Punky Reggae Party for this one, which is a pretty solid track that wasn't on the version of the album I had when I was a kid. 5/5
Great when I was a kid and still great as an adult and all time classic
Absolutely fantastic album. On the 1001 list for a great reason
5 I love Bob Marley. I am sure I did not listen to reggae as a kid, so I think I was introduced to friends in junior high school. I also watched two movies that were reggae influenced: “the harder they come”(1972) and “the mighty Quinn” (1989). Reggae probably was one avenue to my early Christian walk, it was definitely art that had the greatest influence on me in finding Christ. I would sing to Bob Marley and feel like an activist and that something needed to be done for my brothers and sisters. It was a safe place for me to develop my testimony, as I could say to my parents “it’s only music.” Music has a way of working itself into you, it gives an entrance to worship. 1977 was a great year for music. There were 28 albums ranked at least 88% by critics. As I scrolled the albums were ones I would call classic. This album was ranked according to rating at 20 with a 93. Including one of my favorite jazz albums “heavy weather” by weather report! But Marley’s Exodus is a seminal album one I have enjoyed for a very long time. I think this is my favorite part of his short career. At one time I had his box set and these are the songs I would play the most on it. So yes this album deserves to be considered a classic.
I always love this album when I happen upon it. Love the messaging and vibes.
Love. Not all of it, but its an easy album to press play and before you know it its over....but you're smilin :)
I adored this!! :) Discovering that I really like reggae has been a great part of 1001. My only exposure to the genre really was having to play the same few songs at different times, without really knowing what I was doing on bass... I really should have dived into Bob Marley properly years ago! :)
So many iconic songs! (I'd like to thank Shark Tale for introducing me to Three Little Birds)
At this point, I don't know if I would say this was his best, but this is definitely very tight and consistent. In a good way this album feels reigned in. I guess a brush with death can do that to you. I like the variety and the title track itself is a masterclass of pocket.
Not sure how strong this album is compared to Bob Marley's other albums, but I'd say it surely must be up there. First side might not be that exciting, until 'Exodus' comes on which is just so incredibly groovy with a very tight bassline and overall beat. The horns are a real nice addition as well, gives some western vibes. Second side certainly ain't no slouch with 'Jamming', 'Three Little Birds', and 'One Love / People Get Together' being the heavy hitters. I think in general anyone could be satisfied if they managed to get any of the four aforementioned songs on their record, but cramming this many on one album is a feat for sure. Don't listen to that much Reggae, though I must admit I have a soft spot for it. Might feel a bit generous potentially, but I can't imagine being able to swing a much more strong Reggae album than this actually, so I think a 5 is warranted. Albeit a weak one perhaps, as the songs between the hits are not as strong, but not that bad either honestly.
Introduced reggae to the wider world. 5 stars
Pretty much a mandatory 5 stars. Startled by how fresh the song Exodus still sounds.
just wow, masterpieecceee
I had only ever heard Legend and his hits before. A few of the songs on that compilation are found on here. Listening to this album was a good opportunity to explore his music a bit more. I really enjoyed discovering the songs I had not heard before.
Classic
Beyond words!
I remember the first time I REALLY listened to Bob Marley. I obviously always knew who he was, the iconography was inescapable growing up, and some of the songs as well. But in the summer between 8th and 9th grade I went to summer camp for a week, and my cabin counselor loved Marley, and all week just played Marley’s greatest hits CD. By the end of that week the entire cabin knew every word of that album and was singing along. Kind of life changing in a way. There’s maybe no better way to fall in love with Bob Marley than laying on a bunk after two hours of swimming and stuffing your face with mess hall food. Just drying off, relaxing, maybe reading a book or playing WAR with your bunkmates, and Marley just playing in the background. It’s so visceral to me still. Perfect days, and the perfect soundtrack to them.
All-time classic
Like reggae love Bob and this is arguably his best most cohesive album, with a couple of transcend singles to boot. Not my place to say what anyone else should or shouldn't like, it's individual taste after all, but I truely can't understand if you put this on and don't at a minimum appreciate that groove. Easy 5 Star
Classic vibes
excellent, super chill, the office loved it, and jesse pulled out t he incense for the vibe
Opening with Natural Mystic, you know you’re in for a deep, soulful ride. For me, from Heathen on, it’s all peak Marley.
This album is hard to see as an album because it feels more like a reggae playlist on shuffle. These tracks aren't just great songs, they are titans of the genre. It's hard to imagine what reggae would be without these songs. Three little birds, jamming, One love... These songs defined reggae and the Marley legacy. There's something weird about hearing classic songs, the type of songs that even someone who doesn't listen to music knows, Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway to Heaven, Hey Jude, Blowing in the Wind... There's no way to hear it for the first time again. I imagine to reggae fans, these songs and this album are a bit like that. If someone had a framed picture of the mona lisa, I wouldn't think "Wow this guy loves renaissance art" I would think "hmm this guy hasn't replaced his frame's stock photo." This is the height of Bob Marley and the Wailers. Bob got bigger than Reggae, he became an icon, and now a legend. And if somebody doesn't listen to reggae, they will start with this band, and this album. There are no other options. I think that's interesting.
Hell yeah
Being familiar with and agreeable to Bob Marley, I was looking forward to an album I was sure to like. And while I was right about liking it, that just doesn't do justice to how I now feel about it. I don't know if I'm in the perfect mood to listen to this, or this is the perfect album for me. Even discussing painful or dire topics, Bob makes me feel positive and hopeful. It's September of 2025, and the world seems bleak and hopeless. Two major wars (one which could be called an extermination), cruel, divisive, and hateful American politics, and evil people in power in many powerful countries have made me feel powerless and have mostly stolen my hope and optimism. Listening to this album has been such a wonderful vacation this morning. I'm sure I'll listen at least once more today, and I will definitely put this into my regular rotation. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
9/10
Excellent Album. Not my first listen, but did enjoy the reminder listen.
Amazing album!
***** One of Bob Marley's classic albums. I like Reggae, I like Bob!
Jammin' Three little birds Indémodables & iconique
own
Bob Marley and the Wailers' "Exodus" is a wonderful album in all aspects: song-writing, arrangement, and performance. The self-produced album feels both warm and inviting, a testament to its craftsmanship. The original vinyl release is an album of two distinct halves. Side one delves into political and spiritual themes with tracks like the sublime opener, “Natural Mystic,” and the equally compelling “The Heathen.” Side two transitions to focus on love and romance, featuring standouts like the soulful “Waiting in Vain” and the optimistic classic “Three Little Birds.” The album's original track list culminates with the uplifting anthem, “One Love/People Get Ready.” While every song is a rewarding listen, tracks like “Natural Mystic,” “The Heathen,” and the iconic title track “Exodus” are especially powerful. The album's lighter side shines on the wonderful “Jamming” and the heartfelt “One Love/People Get Ready.” With so many exceptional songs, it's no surprise that a significant portion of the album's tracks stand out as true classics. The extended version of the album includes the energetic and playful “Punky Reggae Party.” This track was a positive response to The Clash's cover of Junior Murvin's “Police and Thieves” on their debut album, and it celebrates the synergy between reggae and the emerging punk and new wave scenes in the UK of that time. With its clever lyrics and name-checking of contemporary punk/new wave acts, the song perfectly captures the vibrant musical spirit of the era. In short, "Exodus" is a nearly perfect album that rates at five stars. Side One 1- "Natural Mystic"- (5/5) 2- "So Much Things to Say"- (4/5) 3- "Guiltiness"- (5/5) 4- "The Heathen"- (5/5) 5- "Exodus"- (5/5) Side Two 6- "Jamming"- (5/5) 7- "Waiting in Vain"- (5/5) 8- "Turn Your Lights Down Low"- (5/5) 9- "Three Little Birds"- (5/5) 10- "One Love/People Get Ready"- (5/5) Total - 49 Average - 4.9 98/1001
This trip is like going away on holiday with your girlfriend to a Pacific Island. Things are getting pretty serious between the two of you, as is evidenced by the fact you have splashed out on international travel, and you are staying at quite a nice resort. On the first night, you notice a bonfire down on the beach, so you and your Julie go down to check it out. There are a couple of people sitting around enjoying the peaceful cackle of the flames, but it is not long before you notice one guy who seems to command the attention of everyone there. You join into his conversation just as he is explaining how he is so pained by all the conflict in the world, and thinks everyone should just be more chill. He manages to sneak into the conversation that he has thrown out his credit cards, and yeah his jandals are made from recycled motorcycle tyres. You don't think anyone asked. The strangest thing happens though, as you find yourself gradually agreeing with him more and more. What spell is this charismatic beach dweller casting over you? He's right you know, there are benefits to reverting back to a barter system. And yeah, banks aren't out to protect our interests, they are only in it for themselves! The night carries on, and people start to head off. As the bonfire begins to die down, the enigmatic revolutionist throws a small log on the flames, just to get us to bed time. It is only now that you notice that it is just this guy, you and your Julie left sitting around the fire. This dude starts speaking wistfully about the beauty of love, and the energy you can feel from giving all of yourself to another soul. Wait a minute... is this motherfucker hitting on your Julie?! She gets up and excuses herself, as she needs to run to the bathroom. All of a sudden it is just you and this dude. Are you in a battle of wits with him all of a sudden? Has he suggested this revolution purely as a means to get in between you and your Julie? As her silhouette appears over the dunes, he looks at you and says "Brother, you gotta cherish her. Take her for a walk along the beach down to the point at the southern end, and then come back here. Sit by the fire for a while and talk to her. Really talk to her. Let her see all of your feelings, your emotions, and you're true being. In return, she will do the same for you." As your Julie gets close, he gets up and announces that it is time for him to go to bed. With a friendly smile, he wishes you both a good evening, and disappears into the darkness. You go for a walk down to the point, as he suggested. You sit by the fire, as he suggested. And you talk. You really talk. He was right. She appreciates your openness, and reciprocates, before inviting you back to bed. The next day, you open the door to your bure, and look out to the sunrise. Suddenly, the man appears, walking over the dunes, towards you. Your Julie is still asleep, but he is happy to hear how your night ended. "Listen man, I actually wanted to apologize for last night. I have a bad habit of carrying on too long, and I am worried I kind of ruined your evening. This is obviously a romantic holiday for the two of you, and I just inserted myself into it. I actually brought this to offer as an apology" he says, as he hands you a bottle of coconut rum. You are appreciative, but you do notice the seal on the bottle is broken. You say farewell, and go back to bed to try and sneak another hour or two's rest.
The best Bob Marley album by far. Loads of his classics are to be found here, and they're classics for a reason. Even the lesser known songs on here are still excellent.
Has to be up there with one of the strongest second sides in album history, and a supreme album in its genre
I used to loooove Bob Marley, I had a poster of him in my room in high school lol so this was really nostalgic for me. Makes me wanna be on a beach and drink a nonalcoholic fruity drink and have zero worries. 10/10
I know there’s some black stuff going on here that I can’t fully appreciate but this album could NOT have been better for this white boy.
Bob's best album.
Chill.
Really great, much more mature sound than earlier stuff, lots of classics on here
Love me some bob marley
Excellent choice for laid back vibes. Calming and helped me out currently
My vibe
5 stars because this is one of the few in this list I think actually meet the criteria.
Bass. Groove. Chill. Love.
Excellently produced, amazingly arranged, a great recording of a legend. Marley and The Wailers had an infectious sound, and this one puts that on full display.
The best album of Bob Marley's catalogue. Looks like a Greatest Hits, but it's a studio album, full of bangers, top to bottom. Only Natural Mystic and the title track are worth the whole album, but side two also has great songs like Three Little Birds and One Love
I actually really enjoy reggae. I don't know a ton about the genre or specific artists, but obviously everyone knows Bob Marley. I've definitely listened to Bob Marley's Legend album, but that's just like greatest hits. What I didn't realize was that almost every song on Exodus is on his greatest hits album. Truly unbelievable.
The personal connections I have to this album make it very special to me. I'm happy it came up on a Sunday, and I was able to sit with it and enjoy it. It's really great. "Transcendent" comes to mind.
My favorite Bob Marley album has always been Kaya but that’s only because that’s the one I bought in freshman year of college. Then I bought Uprising and stopped. I stopped too soon. The amount of hits on this record is nuts.
5/5 - Needed to hear this because I’ve heard all the hits hundreds of times, but never listened all the way through a Bob Marley album. Strong all the way through without a miss, it’s obvious why this is a classic. Marley writes timeless lyrics that were very much grounded in the politics of his home and time. The band is impeccable. This is music that lifts.
Incredible as always
Very chill and decent
Loved it. Not huge into reggae, but I get this album. The legendary songs on this album are legendary for a reason and the deep cuts are excellent. 5/5.
Absolute classic, very short and sweet listen.
A great album. It’s great in its simplicity. 3 little birds will airways be a favorite.
Simply iconic.
Amazing record and even better if you learn a bit about the history. I feel like a lot of reggae needs context to make it even more powerful.
He's the GOAT. Absolute legend. This record rips. Its kind of got all the things you want: good lyrics, fun beats, funk psychy guitar solos, good vibrations. I love the lyrics, especially the Rasta and social themes. I also love how it switches to love, love making and spirituality halfway through. I love every song on this record, I've listened to it hundreds of times. This is one that I found as a teenager and have always enjoyed.
Great
Bob Marley never made a bad song. I will debate anyone on this.
Greatest Reggae.
One of my all time favorites and has gotten me through good and bad times!
Incredible. There is a reason he is a legend, and it is this album. All hits, no misses.
great album, ultimate vibes
Another album which didn't disappoint. Reggae music is just too good
Marley is rhe touchstone for every listener of reggae, and for good reason.
Spiritual dude.
One of the greatest albums made by one of the greatest artist of our times
Exodus is a record that proves that, even in a political firestorm, there must be space for Love, for Joy, and for Community. The most beloved songs on this record are songs centered around those things: "Jamming", "Three Little Birds", and "One Love/People Get Ready". It's difficult for me to pin down what my favorite Bob Marley record is. Bob, and the Wailers had such a storied career, going from Ska favorites to writing the book on roots reggae. Although I miss the presence of Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh on this record, there is no denying that it very well may be the Wailers' best.
I totally enjoyed. Relaxing. I could listen to this over and over.
Can’t be mad while listening to Bob Marley. Great vibes the whole way through.
Great vibes, hit after hit after hit. Not new info, but it's clear to me how much influence they had on sublime, and also so so many other bands.
An instant classic. Should be taught in schools. Groovy, soothing, pop-ish even. A must listen.
Solid album and an interesting back story of production.
Good vibes only.
Phenomenal album
Easy five stars. Let yourself feel the vibe and float through this one.
Is there a more chilled out album in existence than this !? Classic Reggae beats. Themes of poetry, religion, faith, love and sex. Jamming and One Love are great tracks. This album takes me back to the 80s and the local West Indian Rastas chilling with a ghetto blaster. Really good album. Waiting In Vain is another good track. This album is just gorgeous!
Bob Marley will always be an amazing listen! Great album!
Great album with great songs.
Perfect
So chill
So, how does Bob Marley like his donuts? Wi jammin’. Ah, I’ll never tire of that. Nor will I tire of this record - it’s perfect. I think these songs are just part of the human DNA now, and we’re all the better for them.
Off the cuff remark: as a kid a cassette of "Legend" was a staple in the car. It wasn't until many years later that I listened to any 'proper' albums. As a staunch atheist it also always strikes me that there must be something special as I can't help but love Bob and the Wailers. Standout track: well... Exodus, Jamming, Turn Your Lights Down Low, Three Little Birds and One Love/People Get Ready all of side 2!! Revisit?: Undoubtedly.
Full of the most classic tracks of all time. The stoners backing tracks. And loved by sqaures as well. What else can you say about this? These tracks will probably live for so many more years than I could even imagine. They are all that good. My only gripe being that I guess I prefer live cuts of this group more than these studio versions. Very weird for me but some of these songs just sound a little off compared to the versions I grew up with. But thats about all I could say thats quote unquote "bad. Its a great record and you should light one for the band and relax and enjoy. Or just spin it. However you fancy
A classic that has been in my personal collection since it’s release.
Damn. What a badass first choice.
More fire from Bob and The Wailers, one of my favorites of his
Anything by Bob Marley gets a five star from me
Incredible. Beautiful. Immaculate vibes. Amazing that he gave the concert two days even after being shot for him not to give the show. And he risked his life and gave the concert to give people hope in times of peril. And a beautiful performance to experience. I wish I could’ve seen him live.
Solid 4 went up to 4.5 once “Three Little Birds” played. On second listen all of it holds up, although I would have liked some change of tempo; everything is the same groove.
Great great album. Few absolute tunes in it and great sound throughout. Could happily listen to this all the way through again. Specific rating- 4.6 Fav song- jamming Least fav- natural mystic
Great album! Could have this on repeat for a while without getting tired of it.
👍🏻
Very chill album.
Such a legend. It was a very soothing and calming album
Probably my favorite reggae album
5* What am I, fucking stupid?
i love this album!! my friend had reccomended this to me a while ago and revisiting it made me think of her. thanks for this saanvi ;-) listening to this album made me ten times cooler its just such a certified classic and has one of the best feels to it
Legendary lyrics
Excellent Album with timeless classic tracks. Not as politically charged as Natty Dread (more peace & love themes on the 2nd half) but probably his most definitive album. I could listen to this album anytime. 4.5/5
All hail King Bob.
Maybe no artist is more associated with their genre than Bob Marley. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or if it has made reggae kind of a static thing where most of it sounds like a Marley cover band. I consider myself a fan but I'm not sure I've listened to any of the albums rather than greatest hits albums of compilations or playlists. So Much Things to Say is a great song, better than some of the singles that came off this album. A three and a half minute Jamming is a shock, I usually only hear the extended version. Turn Your Lights Down Low is another great song, and the version Lauryn Hill did using the original is great too. Three Little Birds is a great pick me up song. It's hard not to smile a little bit when you hear it. It's too bad they turned him into a mascot...I guess he's Jamaica's greatest cultural export...either him or the bobsledders. Great album.
Super classic probably his most positive and balanced album.
I always thought I didn't like Bob Marley, but I was one hundred percent wrong
ITS BOB FKIN MARLEY
Un hit tras otro: Exodus, Jamming, Three little birds, One love...Obra maestra absoluta de la mano de Bob Marley and the Wailers.
A great start to the day, the sun is shining and Bob is singing through the speakers! A great album with chilled out vibes to make the hour long commute to work a little more bearable.
A pretty much perfect reggae album. Along with every dorm room having a Bob Marley poster, nearly every male between the ages of 18-25 also owned Legend. A lot of those songs come from this album, though Exodus has great album tracks as well. Everyone knows the hits: Exodus Jammin' Waiting in Vain Three Little Birds One Love Essentially, the second half of this album are Marley's greatest hits. Natural Mystic, So Much Things to Say and Turn Your Lights Down Low could have a place on the greatest hits album as well. Classic reggae album and proof that Bob Marley was more than just a "greatest hits" artist. In fact, his next album (Kaya) is full of hits as well and there is an argument it could be on this list.
Damit wäre wieder einmal bewiesen, wie mit einfachen Mitteln größtmögliche Wirkung erzielt wird. the heathen, jamming, wait in vain, exodus... alles unsterbliche Klassiker. Wird nach hinten raus immer besser. 9/10
There’s not a bad song on this album. From start to finish, it’s a smooth listen, with a handful of tracks like “Jamming,” “Three Little Birds,” and “One Love” that will live on forever. It’s easy to see why this album is so highly regarded; it delivers a message, has a great rhythm, and soul in equal measure.
Side 1 is great, and ends strongly with the title track. Side 2...holy shit. Had to check I hadn't somehow started playing his greatest hits. If there's a better reggae album on the list I can't wait to hear it.
Keeping with the beachy/summer theme.. This is a genre defining album. Anyone who doesn't like reggae music must listen to it. "Natural Mystic", "Exodus", "Jamming", "Three Little Birds" and "One Love" are some of the highlights for me. This album will always put me in a summery mood. Favorite track: Jamming 4.5/5
Esch wahrschiindlech öppe s beschte Raggea Albom. Einzig chönts ergendeinisch chli eintönig wärde, was aber no chli werd tuure.
grooves that can go on forever and still feel great to sway to get a special place in my heart. those tracks come from the most human parts of us. and these folks create something just like that.
He survived an assassination attempt before he recorded this? I liked <Jamming>. When he goes "Jamming Jamming", I thought he was calling my friend's name (Jiaming..). Fun. But I guess reggae is just not really my favourite type of music? They all sound like someone's in a themed park dressed up in cartoon uniform holding a candy floss some extent...very bouncy... — after a few reggae albums I can really appreciate this album more than I was able to. Indeed a great album and it showcases the beauty of this genre! Loved jamming.
I went in with 8 of the 10 songs already saved, and knew the other two from other listens. It’s a great fucking album. Possibly his best, and that’s saying a lot. It deserves all the love. The world could stand to hear his message more.
Another that’s super hard to be objective. I just love bob so much. Such a unique sound. It’s a weird combination of such carefree vibes while also caring so much (in terms of the content of some of his lyrics).
How can an entire genre be completely dominated by one man who died in 1981? When most people say they like Reggae what they really mean is they like Bob Marley. Maybe that's an ignorant statement, but for the United States I think it's pretty accurate. There's just something special about him. I have a couple other Reggae albums by other artists, but they just don't hit the mark. It's Marley or nothing. This album is a big hitter in general. The first half has some solid songs, but it just keeps getting better and better as it goes on. "Natural Mystic", "Exodus", "Jamming", "Waiting In Vain", Three Little Birds", and "One Love" are all greatest hits songs. 6 radio songs on a 35 minute album is really impressive, and it's back loaded rather than front loaded like most albums. The further into the album you get, the more you want to listen to it. This is a genre defining album. How can it not be a 5? Here's to everyone who played Halo 2 in the basement listening to Bob Marley - Gold with me.
Love
Excellent album, not just for reggae, but classic rock altogether
Has anyone one never listed to this album. I'm sure you get given a copy when you first attend college.
Amazing album that it's impossible not to love, really. Packed with great songs and the second half is basically a mini greatest hits. Marley's writing is really evocative.. the reggae "peace on earth" vibe is a bit of a cliché but these lyrics have really nice themes of love and understanding but also a quiet spirit of fight and perseverance And although the overall tone is calm and relaxing, there are some great instrumental flourishes here - it's not just mellow rhythmic reggae, we have some cool guitar licks and other instrumental parts throughout. Easy 5*
I’ve loved this album since I was a child My dad didn’t listen to a lot music, but Bob was one that he loved. Almost 40 years of contentiously be aware of Bob Marley and he never gets old. The love he has for music pours out of the speakers. The love he has for mankind is even strong. His poetry is direct, powerful, and still holds weight almost 50 years later. His ability to create a melody is up there with anyone ever. There are so many timeless songs on this album. This is a Top 10 all-time album to me. 9.9/10 #69/1001
Punchy, catchy, great for Sundays and relaxing. Instant classic. Proving that you don’t need to listen to best hits to enjoy Bob Marley. As much as I’ll ever enjoy reggae
10/10 - Classic!
This is the 125th album I’m rating. I've listened to Peter Tosh but that's about it. Not much else reggae that I know of. Adding to my Playlist - Natural Mystic, So Much Thing to Say, Guiltiness, The Heathen, Exodus, Jamming, Waiting in Vain, Turn You Lights Down Low, Three Little Birds, and One Love/People Get Ready. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. All in all I liked 10/10 songs. Bob Marley and especially The Wailers are just as good as everybody has said. Great reggae.
Tight band, mäktig körtrio i the i-threes. Titelspåret är mäktig. A-sidan något mörkare. B-sidan; glädjebuskap. Bästa spår, omöjligt att välja.
Look past the white people with dreads and shitty graphic t-shirts and see what is an outstanding album.
Amazing album, worthy of it's status.
Don't worry about a thing, 'Cause every little thing gonna be all right.
10/10. My first reggae album and just kinda blown away by it. Wow. A new favorite.
I'm jamming
Onhan tää kova.. aikalailla best of ja vielä murhayrityksen perää
Is there anything else that can make you feel this way no matter how you’re feeling when you go into it?
10/10 It’s Bob Marley at his peak. I’ve always wanted to listen to an album in full because I’ve only listened to his hits before. He absolutely delivered with this album. Marley brings his listeners along a spiritual journey that heals the soul. Vibe album with so many great tracks Favorite Tracks: *Three Little Birds*, *One Love*, *Jamming*, Natural Mystic
This is an excellent album without a single weak track. It includes many of Bob Marley's biggest and best songs like Jamming, One Love, and Three Little Birds. The non-hit tracks are really good as well. I would listen to this album anytime.
While I don't actually think this is bob's most entertaining record, you have to admit the singles are strong and the album tracks, while I think just below par, I think, are still good enough.
Superb. Not a bad track on the album. This genuinely needs to be heard before you die (finally!).
Pussy bambaclat rasta album makin' mi wanna smoke BIG spliff
Bob Marley was my gateway into the world of reggae music, much like for many others. Although I had heard this genre previously, it was "Exodus" that marked the first time I intentionally listened to a reggae album in its entirety during my teenage years. 'Exodus' can be distinctly divided into two segments; side 'A' features tracks with themes of change and politics, culminating in the powerful titular anthem, 'Exodus'. However, shaped by my initial experiences with this music, I believe it would be challenging to find a more compelling side 'B' on any album, as it is filled with songs that explore love, yearning, and human connection. Classics such as 'Jammin', 'Waiting In Vain', 'Turn Your Lights Down Low', 'Three Little Birds', and 'One Love/People Get Ready' make for an almost perfect segment of music. I am certain that many have articulated the brilliance and cultural significance of this album and its influence on them more eloquently over the years. However, for me, this album started an interest to delve into music beyond the mainstream top 40 radio for the first time, a journey I embarked upon at the age of 12 and have continued for over 45 years.
Exodus is one of those rare higher realm albums. It has a magical way of lifting spirits.
Not a bad moment on it, great example of reggae at its best
5/5 This album glows. It doesn’t shout. It radiates. It’s resistance music disguised as a tropical breeze.
This album played a pivotal role in my re-discovery of Bob Marley as SO much more than just another collection of songs on a greatest hits compilation. I was on mescaline. Or was it mushrooms? Difficult to see. The title track, Natural Mystic, Heathen, So Much Things to Say...deep, HEAVY shit. Not to mention the several greatest hits. Bob's lyrics and music are sacred and infinite and Exodus might be his best. 5
Can't think of a more perfect way to capture the reggae spirit and instantly feel at ease. One of my favorite s!
I always thought I was just a Greatest Hits (Legend) fan, but this was awesome!
Always goos stuff.
Bob Marley and The Wailers at their finest, man.
man this album ends so strongly
Contiene clásicos como Jamming, Waiting in vain, Three Little Birds, One Love/People Get Ready o Turn Your Lights Down Low (de la que harían una versión estupenda Laurynn Hill).
After an assassination attempt Marley relocated to London. Exodus was recorded in a UK style and I feel like this album has a more British feel to the recording. It's strictly roots reggae and the recording has a very clean sound. Like most British rock recordings of the time, every instrument including vocals is pushed as high it can without clipping. Giving this a very alive but overall clean style. A very approachable reggae album for those uniniated with the style.
Exceptional album.
o PURO SUCO do reggae
Now THIS is a banger. Starts strong, ends strong. Reggae bliss. The first Marley album I got on 1001 was really good, bit exodus is top to bottom GREAT. Easy 5 for me.
For every person writing reviews on this site who just doesn't like Reggae, doesn't get it, or whatever negative reaction they have to the genre is a person like me who simply can't get enough. I like it all - the first wave ska, the sound system era, dub: it's all good to me. I love the hypnotic repetition, the deceptively complicated polyrythms, the vocals, the patois, the anti-authority line that runs through it all. The almighty generator has blessed me with the second Bob Marley album in as many weeks, and both for over the weekend, which is when Reggae is properly appreciated. Here especially with the heavy biblical overtones both straightforward and subtle. "Movement of Jah people" is uttered in a way to be all encompassing. Jah people is all the people, all mankind. If you are not actively being oppressed Jah wants you to stand up to those who are. The run of songs up to the end is beyond criticism (with the possible exception of "Turn Your Lights Down Low," but it's hard to fault the man for flexing his soul muscle, it wouldn't be reggae without that). Exodus. Jamming. Waiting in Vain. Lights Down Low. Three Little Birds (the best of ths bunch?🤔). One Love/People Get Ready. They're not trying to do anything avant garde, they're not trying to keep the record company happy or win a rap battle or be more metal, or any other off-topic motivation. They're just adding beauty to the world and they're so good at it they get to tag a message to it here and there. This is why I listen to music.
Great album front to back
Probably the best reggae record of all time. Not a single bad song. So impactful and amazing vibes. 1-10 how bad I want it on vinyl: 9.5
Never listen to bob marley before, but this is amazing guy was a genius.
Enjoyed this one! Bob Marley's music seldom disappoints.
Absolute classic album
Although it's hard to pick one this may be my favorite Bob Marley album. The definitive reggae artist in fine form.
This one is right on the edge of being a 5 for me. Lovely music and a beautiful message. Side A was probably a 5, while Side B is a very high 4. Edit: I'm moving it to a 5! Favorite Track: The Heathen
Epic reggae music.
Has so many of his big tracks. I would love to sit at the beach with a mojito and listen to this on repeat. Excellent start to finish
Not many more pleasurable records on this list, even overlooking the seriousness of intent (and content) in some of the songs. "Natural Mystic" and "So Much Things" provide immediate quality and "Waiting in Vain" and "Turn Your Lights Down Low" are excellent love songs and the title track is both groovy and gritty – equally swinging and salient. "Jamming" and "Three Little Birds" have maybe been overexposed across long time horizons, their inherent sweetness having become too easily beloved by non-thinking fans. But every record should have "flaws" that inspire such minor quibbling. One could listen all day and just might today, in fact.
Excellent album, love the split between politics and loving, perfect combo
Very calm and mellowed out Like, nothing matters kinda vibe (not suicidal tho)
I’m going to give this 5 stars for the first half of the album; the second half is not bad, but suffers under the burden of being very popular with the type of folks that replace having a personality with smoking weed.
No notes necessary, as this album has been in my collection a long time, and is one of my favourites.
There is a reason Bob Marley is the GOAT in his field. This album has banger after banger after banger
I know that Marley can be like Marmite for some folk, and aficionados will go deep into the roots of reggae and dub for their inspiration, but that should not detract from what a musically solid album this is. I’m definitely in the “love” camp as far as Bob is concerned and most definitely when it comes to Exodus. If I were curating 50 albums to listen to before you die to give an alien a wide taste of the best of modern human music, this would make my cut. It’s fun, it grooves, it’s politically and socially aware. It’s simply a great listen and one I never shy away from returning to.
Bob Marley I love you
Consistent tempo throughout the album with similar instrumental timbre between songs. Generally very chill album. Despite song similarities, I didn’t find myself wanting to skip any songs. I anticipate searching for this album in my discography in future to play it in its entirety again. Great pick for albums that warrant thorough listening.
4.5/5 - Great album; full of classics; overall has catchy tunes. I think each song is strong on it's own. Listening to them back to back made the songs blend/blur together. I would've liked to see some breakups between the songs but definitely a solid reggae album.
Perfection.
One of the greatest feel good albums of all time, if not one of the greatest albums of all time period. The positive just oozes from the headphones man I love this album. You can throw it on at any time of day and it’ll make you smile. Not to mention, the music itself is incredible. Classic album!
Great mix of politics and universal love
Perfect no notes
Great album! Never realized how much I would like this and will save to my collection.
Natural mystic
Puts me right back in my dorm room.
was reallt good i love bob marley
Transcendent while also down to earth.
As I long-time reggae hater, it pains me to admit that this is really great. Don't know that it's gonna redeem the genre for me, but the one love/people get ready mashup was awesome, Natural Mystic was good. Just had a great time with this.
I would give this 500 stars if I could, top 5 album of all time for me. If I could gather all the stars that I had to give albums that sucked but could not rate zero, then I'd have maybe 10 more stars, and I'd give them all to this album, plus the 500 I mentioned at the start. So that's like 515 stars, sounds about right.
So chill, so fun, so classic. It is a great album.
Bob Marley at his best i think. Well it's a classic and there is no better reagge than this.
Yeah, this is great
* At last an album that's not guitar-fixated, nor from a singer songwriter, and it's a banging 5 star one too.
Phenomenal. Honestly thought it was a greatest hits album so many classics
don't consider myself a reggae guy. but cmon. this shit is seriously classic, and so well done. and to understand even just a smidge of the historical context of this music like this is special stuff.
One of the great albums. Lyrics. Style. Message.
I've always loved this one!
# Album Name: Exodus # Artist: Bob Marley # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: Great Album. The first half is probably a 4. 2nd half is fantastic. 5/5. These songs have stood the test of time. BM brought reggae to the mainstream and really made it his own. This is genuinely a great listen imo. Plenty of bangers. # Top Tunes: Exodus / Jamming / waiting in vain / lights down low / 3 little birds / one love # Would I listen to it again? Yes
Iconic. So many great tracks and just the best voice.
Not a bad track on this album. It’s such a vibe. Didn’t hurt that I got this album while we were at the beach. I already had this one but I’m always down to jam this again and again. Easy decision here, 5/5.
Amazing how Bob Marley’s music can be so light and so heavy at the same time.
fantastic reggae - I remember seeing them on the OGWT
One of my favorite albums of all time. i got through the whole discography at least once a month. his first album to hit the charts in every continent. every bob marley album will get a 5 from me
This is the quintessential reggae album from the artist that opened the world up to this sound and style.
With so many albums to his credit I’m sure many people treat this like all the others. And while yes the overall style and vibe is a common thread throughout all of them, this one hits differently. The more mellow and laid back production helps this one rise to the top backed by a bevy of some of his strongest tunes. Add to this him surviving an assassination attempt during this time and it easily moves into some of his best work. A great listen.
I’m trying to be judicious with my 5’s and came into the skeptical given previous Marley reviews. Got dammit this was great. Front to back just fantastic. I don’t think you can compare to Legends since that’s a greatest hit so I’d say this is Bob’s best work. Of course you have the monster songs like Jamin’, three little birds and One Love. Exodus was great and Turn Your Lights Down Low may be one of my new favs. Bravo.
Ask a random person on the street to name a reggae song and 9/10 times their response will come from this album. Maybe a bit over an overestimate, but there are songs here that have basically BECOME reggae. Defined the genre to the average person. And I love it. 4.75/5
Bob is clearly the best to ever reggae
Fantastic.
There are very few truely great albums. This is one of them.
One of the best to do it.
One of my favorite Bob Marley albums. I have a copy and listen to it often. My significant other and I went to Jamaica to his birthplace at Nine Mile, it's safe to say that I am a big fan. Can't recommend this album enough, the beats and lyrics are perfect. It has a super chill vibe while still delivering a message. Got me interested in Reggae music.
I’ve never been super into Bob Marley. I, like everyone in the world, owned Legend on CD at one point in my life, but it didn’t get a ton of play. Recently though, Redemption Song (not on this album, but my favorite of his so far) and Three Little Birds have been in my rotation when I need Alexa to play a song or two while I do dishes or something. Anyway, I’m not sure I can’t not give this a 5. It’s really good top to bottom, and certainly my vibe. I’m NOT super into Bob Marley now, though.
Amazing record
Arguably the greatest and most important Reggae album ever released
Sounded great. I've listened to the best of's and listening to this album as intended was eye opening.
Know this album quite well having bought it many years ago. I've always enjoyed the music of Bob Marley as it brings back memories of hearing this music booming out of local house in 1970s/80s South Liverpool
peak
Kittinek
This has 'the songs' on it which helps, but generally a lovely time was had by all listening to this. Low 5.
It's like a best-of
Dis a di bes Reggae albom a aal taim fi a riizn. BOMBOCLAAAAT!!!!!!!
Easily one of my faves of all time
Marvelous!
Just that little drum roll at the beginning of the songs is already worthy of 5 stars. Imagine the rest!
God only knows why I've held off on listening to Bob Marley until now. That was so immediately lovely the whole way through. Like a buttery croissant. The production is stunning. The Wailers sound perfect. Marley is a great frontman, obviously. Much of what he's singing rings true. Listening to this left me feeling soothed and comfortable. What more could you ask for?
No notes. Favorite tracks: Waiting In Vain Jamming
I like everything by Bob Marley. Every time I listen a full record is like a time vortex, where I don't know if I've been listening to it for 5 or 50 minutes. But I think that's part of the experience, so I'm rating this with 5 stars.
would give 10 stars if I could. I am bias growing up listening to this music but would give 5 stars to every song on this album
Great songs/performances with more than a few classics.
Indoktrinerad sedan barnsben av en god vän.
Just wonderful. Pretty perfect.
Can’t understand less than 4 stars. Perfect a reggae album.
Album 665 of 1001 Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus (1977) Rating : 5 / 5 Great album. Some iconic tracks. Madison Avenue sure loves a couple of them. Bringing reggae to the masses.
Owned and played regularly ever since it was released.
Bob had the magic. Still reaching down through the generations.
Bob Marley really one of one. Nobody made Reggae this huge and accessible. Its filled with so may of his arguably biggest and best songs! Shoutout to the Wailers too of course. 5*
This must be the best reggae album ever. Vibrant and warm and soulful. 4.6
Lots of bangers on here like Exodus, Jamming, Three Little Birds and One Love.
I was surprised by this one. This album has enough variety to keep me engaged and has some nice compositions. The lyrics weren't too preachy and I came away with an appreciation of reggae I never had before
Songs flow so well into each other, album is definitely best listened in order. First 3 songs are classic reggae. Synth guitar on "The Heathen" is wild but good, then flows directly into the funk of "Exodus". "Jamming" needs no discussion it's famous for a reason, but "Exodus" into "Jamming" into "Waiting in Vain" is a fantastic 3 song suite. Then "Turn Your Lights Down Low" into "Three Little Birds" and "One Love/People Get Ready". Honestly the last 6 songs of this album are legendary. This is bad for the start of my "I'm gonna be harsh rating albums" journey but I can't give this anything less than a 5/5.
magical and fun. great hearing the whole album through
One of the best of all time. First half is cool ass reggae. Second half is just incredible. What a run of songs! Its almost a Best of Reggae mini album. Waiting In Vain is in my personal top ten (maybe 5) songs of all time. 5 stars, an absolute pleasure to listen to this.
The groove is irresistible and the message is inspirational no matter how many times I hear it.
Day353 - i came for the three hits and really liked the rest of them
His best record
GOD
9/10
This started as a two then became a 3 then after another listen a 4 and finally I’m going with a 5. Fuck it.
Bob is a legend and his music is timeless
I thought I was falling in love during the first half of the album, and then the lights were dimmed, and the candles were lit. It's such a great album. Some obvious, notable hits from the album, but honestly it works so much better as a whole. And the more I sit and think about how I want to rate the album, the more I realize how great it really is, and how much higher I want to rate it. I could help but sway/dance and vibe along to every single song. And some of the songs really caught me off-guard with how great they were. Favorite Song(s): So Much Things to Say, Exodus, Waiting in Vain
One song after another on the album is fantastic. First time I listened to this album in its entirety and I couldn’t have enjoyed it more. Beautiful, thought provoking, and filled with blissful memories (2013 Red Sox).
Classic after classic 5/5
A feel good, timeless album. One of the greats in my book.
THE BEST Bob Marley album, especially title track onwards 5/5
Classic.
Some of his best like Three Little Birds
Det ultimative reggae album ever
It was a good album, liked the songs on it.
This isn't an album, it's a party.
Really one of the all time great albums
I definitely can't claim to be an expert on reggae but 'Exodus' is a fantastic album. Written against the backdrop of political turmoil, an assassination attempt on Marley, and his departure from his native Jamaica for London, there's loads to focus on here. This is very likely the most famous reggae album internationally. Purists may say that it's not a true reggae album and that it incorporates elements of other styles. Maybe Bob Marley was ready to branch out, or maybe the sounds of London seeped into his music. Very likely, the album's popularity comes from these influences. But most people would agree that the album works. From start to finish, it is still the best reggae album out there for legions of fans.
Awesome stuff
A great album froma great man
Great album, so much better than just a collection of big familiar singles
Yes! I was waiting for dinner Bob Marley on this list.
Chill and jammin' vibes!
A true 5!
Absolutely love Bob. And this is some of his best writing. Absolutely deserves to be on this list.
Just totally listenable, both engaging and comforting. “Waiting in Vain” is an all-time love song, with a near- perfect blend of beauty and longing (plus the required touch of sadness). “Jamming” is (obviousness alert) completely infectious while avoiding insubstantiality. “Exodus” is as serious (even grave) as “Turn Your Lights Down Low” is chill and sexy. One's 19-year-old reggae-listening self might have overrated the genre’s ability to drive social change, but probably underrated its staying power as pure music (at least when executed at the highest level, which this surely represents). In other words, the record continues to work on multiple levels including the most cliched (that it's smile-making – a quality that’s easy to underrate but shouldn’t be). 4.6
Best album yet.
I’d never actually heard this in full before so am very glad I checked it out. I’ve enjoyed Bob Marley albums before but this was the first one where every single track really clicked with me. Just a fantastic collection of songs front to back
5- Stars (13/15)
Lovely album to start this with.
Absolute reggae perfection. Such a chill record. Three Little Birds is my favorite Bob Marley song. Always puts me in a good mood. Favourite songs: Three Little Birds, One Love/People Get Ready, Jamming, Natural Mystic, So Much Things to Say, The Heathen, Exodus, Guiltiness, Least favourite songs: Turn Your Lights Down Low 5/5
Exodus, Bob Marley & the Wailers' ninth album, is regarded as their best work. It is arguably the most influential reggae album of all time, and sits near the top of many "best albums of all time" lists. The group had had already found international fame - but Exodus made Marley and the Wailers into superstars. Marley had a mythical status in Jamaica, and after an assassination attempt, Marley left Jamaica for more than a year. Exodus was inspired, in part, by Marley's exile from his home. The songs on this album have become some of the most famous reggae tracks of all - "Exodus," "One Love," and "Three Little Birds." For many, Marley's anthems are what people know of as reggae; Marley defined the genre, and this album is a central element of it.
Great album. Should listen to Bob more often!
It would be easy to focus on the hits but the album as a whole is outstanding. No filler or duds, it shows why Bob Marley is such a legend.
What a poignant album to get on Wednesday with the US staring down another trump presidency. Many more will have to suffer. Don’t ask me why. The one Marley album that will not remind me not to worry and be happy. Despite the depression and this kinda adding to the melancholy of the day, this is an astounding album. Adds so much interest to a genre I normally find a bit one tone.
Klasik, apsolutno uzivanje. No notes
