Degelijke plaat maar nooit helemaal mijn ding geweest.
I guess I just don't understand classic rock... The album wasn't bad - it just didn't have a whole lot of variety. I had heard "Sultans of Swing" before, and when the first track started, I actually thought it was SoS, that's how alike they sounded. It's a style I suppose; just one I'm not super fond of.

sultans of swing is massive. then its just a load of album. nothing to tell anyone about, its just some stuff.
Brave, pioneering, spectacular, explosive and groundbreaking are just five words that do not describe this fairly dull album. 🥂
Fine I guess, nothing to write home about. Pretty monotone sound but a few good tracks.

This album was so low energy. It almost teeters into 1, but is so mundane and safe that it doesn't have the guts to get into the 1 place.
The 'Dire Straits sound' has a lovely clean and so distinctive guitar tone, but most of the songs are a bit too long and don't go anywhere all that exciting. And Mark Knopfler isn't a singer really, though he actually seems like a sound human being. However, this does have Sultans of Swing on it, a song so good that Daft Punk ripped it off 25 years later and it still sounded great. I couldn't recommend this album, but it isn't without its good points. (NB - later on, Romeo and Juliet, and Walk of Life are also tuuuuunes. Definitely worth owning a greatest hits. But not an album)
While the overall composition here is rock solid, these tracks just don't know when to quit. The grooves established on some are enough to power through a solid 3 minutes, but others are so limpid that even 2 minutes feels like a drag.
Some great guitar work, but the music just isn’t my bag unfortunately. Country influenced stadium rock.
Not my cuppa
Meh. This album isuch of the same throughout. In my mind it was a vehicle for Knopfler's guitar playing. It is a bit of a strange album in that it crosses blues rock with more of a folksy song delivery. It is interesting that Tim picked up the Bob Dylan backing band feel as after Dylan heard Dire Straits he asked Knopfler and his drummer to back him up on Slow Train Running (good ear Tim!)The reason I think this album stood out as much as it did was it came out when Disco and Punk were really popular so it was different. Dire Straits was a huge draw if not a critical success. Brother in Arms was a better album. I'll give it a 2 1/2
Interesting listen, but I found it a little difficult to get through. The band is really talented and the guitar playing in particular had a beautiful, tactile quality. But the vocalist felt like a Dylan ripoff without the same depth of poetry. Favourite track: “Sultans of Swing”
Mark E Mark Knopfler and the Funky Bunch bring the smooth rock and tasty slick guitar solos to people, while kindof singing, kindog talking. I was hoping to discover some gems, but instead was ushered into nothingness via Dire adult contemporary lullabies. He sure can play the guitar tho. C+

Super into the music, less into the singing. Fave song - Water of Love. Worst song, (truly the worst) Sultans of Swing. Also, this album could play in repeat and I would never know if it changed songs because they have such similar music for each track. Not my cup of tea.
Not really for me. Nice groove, impressive restraint and I really like the lead guitar bits. But it just doesn't excite me.

Mark Knopfler sure can make those six strings sing. Listen close—it's a little European school boy bouncing around the open "ah." Otherwise, this is 75% of a fine Bob Dylan impersonation. I don't believe a word he says. The precision of the playing saps energy and therefore emotion. Give me one good reason why I shouldn't just listen to Infidels (best of all worlds). Sorry, Brandon. I like: the sweet tenderness of "Wild West End."

Am I missing something because I still find Dire Straits to be one of the most bland and generic bands in all of rock music. I just feel like they have absolutely no soul or character at all, just the most boring and predictable rock ever made. Like they don't even try to be unique in any way, they just play their instruments for 40 minutes and call it an album, at least on a lot of other music I would accuse of being generic there's still somewhat of an attempt to be interesting, but this is like AI generated levels of generic. Absolutely no creativity is displayed in this album at all, just plain guitar riffs and predictable vocal melodies. I simply can't fathom why this band is so popular.

Last night I drifted into a dream that carried me to a past I’ve never lived in. I found myself standing in my little neighborhood record store, flipping through the bins. When suddenly, a melody rose into the air: warm, shimmering and enchanting. The tune made me stop mid-motion. “What’s playing?” I asked. The shop owner smiled, knowingly, and told me it was a song by Dire Straits, from the self-titled debut of a young and aspiring band from London, UK. Apparently my dream took place in the 70s, and not only had I never heard of the Mark-Knopfler-led band before, I also didn’t have any pre-formed, unshakable opinion about their quality. So when I woke up, I decided it was time to give the record another shot. And believe me, I really tried to find something I enjoyed. But no chance - I still hate everything (or at least most of it) about it, but primarily it’s Mark Knopfler’s guitar work that annoys me. It’s 45 minutes of: Look, I’m the guy with the Fender and I’m playing guitar AT you. Seriously, what is he aiming at - a good song, or is it simply attention-seeking for his (undeniable) skills? Over the course of this debut record, he borrows heavily from others and ruminates on lyrics that aspire to a Dylan-level depth they never reach. Granted, it’s not Clapton-level obnoxious, but nonetheless, it was hard to sit through.
I wanna high-five the reviewer who described Dire Straits as "rizzless grateful dead" I really needed a chuckle after that supremely beige ordeal.

Well well well, isn’t this just the peak of Boomer energy - full on dad jeans, a cold one, and the glory days of no seat belts - whats the worst that can happen? Ugh, this music - that’s what can happen.
My dad and his wife live in a Jimmy Buffet-themed retirement community in Florida called Margaritaville. Dire Straights sounds like the band playing in the poolside bar/lounge in Maragaritaville every Thursday at happy hour. There is not enough reefer or beer on planet Earth to convince me that this record isn't boring as hell. Nope.

If Walk of Life or Money for Nothing was on this album, it might be a bump to 2 or 3 stars. Somehow felt longer than the Masekela album
This is the 126th album I’m rating. I listened to one song once and it wasn't that good so I don't have high expectations. Adding to my Playlist - Setting me Up, Southbound Again, Wild West End, and Lions. Not Adding to my Playlist - Down to the Waterline, Water of Love, Six Blade Knife, Sultans of Swing, and In the Gallery. All in all I liked 4/9 songs. Not as bad as I thought it would be but a lot of the songs were pretty forgettable.
What you get when an ex schoolteacher and an ex social worker try and do Bob Dylan & The Shadows. Sound like every holiday turn I’ve ever heard. Punk wasn’t even cold at this point.
I never liked "Dire Straits". Mark Knopfler's guitar is really annoying. "Sultans Of Swing" was played over and over again on the radio, in bars and pubs etc. You couldn't escape it. It's not going on my turntable, ever. Mark, just go away!

I found this to be a fundamentally pointless listen. If I ever need something to put on when I’m tenderly making love to a moussed mid 80’s babe, then I guess I now have the perfect thing to soundtrack it.

I don’t really get this. It was fine, but rather boring. I didn’t hate it. Not worth a second listen though. Sidenote: Sultans of swing is the dumbest fucking song I’ve ever heard. I’d give it a 2 for the album, but that song alone deserves a 1

There's some groove to it, but it's so boring and the singer sounds like he needs some laxatives. I hope they don't have a 3rd album on this list.
Sultans of Swing was the 80s wedding band guitarist's moment to shine. It was ubiquitous when I was growing up that its genuinely difficult to have a perspective on it. It's got the best hooks on it and you can hear why it was the single. But this album is simultaneously the most polite and the most overbearingly convinced of its own marvellousness neutered attempt at rock and roll.
If I lived in a house in the country with a sports car or two in the driveway (with personalised number plates, naturally) a stable with the obligatory pony or horse, two daughters called Beatrice and Camilla, I would say this is frolockingly superdupery scrummily good rock and roll. Alas, I don't and it's not, therefore I feel rather fortunate.

Epitome of boomer rock and another in the long line of White Brits playing the “blues”. I can’t say I found anything good about this record. Sure the music I guess is good from a purely technical standard but it just hides an empty vessel of a band.
I hated this and I’m afraid it’s going to put me in a bad mood all day. When you hear “Money for Nothing” or “Sultans of Swing” in isolation, you don’t think, “Oh, this is the world’s most masturbatory band,” but then when you are subjected to a whole album, oh boy. I’m a little torn on rating because I do like SoS and Wild West End—maybe those are good enough to get it to a two? But I don’t think so.
No offense to dads in their sixties, but this is music for dads in their sixties.
I love the instrumentation but the vocals kind of kill it for me. There's a disconnect and I find myself hard to enjoy this.
None of the songs really grabbed me. One thing I liked on each song was the guitars. But otherwise, couldn’t really connect with any song. Just didn’t grab me lyric-wise. I wouldn’t have been able to tell Sultans of Swing was the big hit of this album without reading it. If I had to pick a song I liked, it would be Wild West End. It was the one song that seemed different as it was slower, and it got me trying to listen to the lyrics. But ultimately, just couldn’t connect.
Only a couple songs I liked and they went on too long. Mostly guitar riffs and musical noise.

Tbh i was a bit dispapointed by the few songs i listen from this album, and usually i,m a big fan of 70's rock, but i just don't think this particular one have something more to offer than its contemporary, like there is nothing particulary good about this album. but its not a terrible album either, it just dosent impress me a lot

I'll be honest here. I didn't even bother listening to this. They're an awful band. I mean, who would listen to this crap in '78 when there was far, far better music and bands. I disliked them then and I dislike them even more now.

It just reminded me of the forbidden love between a special needs man and his mother in law, which forces them to go on the run together ultimately in their car plummeting into a reservoir. Will they survive? No.
Every song starts out a bit like Sultans of Swing but then turns out to be nowhere near as good as Sultans of Swing. Then there's Sultans of Swing which is alright. And then there's some more songs that start out a bit like Sultans of Swing but turn out to be nowhere near as good as Sultans of Swing. If Robert Johnson really did sell his soul at the crossroads, I'm sure Beelzebub is making old Bob suffer in eternal damnation by playing this type of watered down, piss weak "blues" on repeat to him for all eternity.
Very low key, chill, guitar driven, old time rock and roll. A tad repetitive overall. No real singing moments or lyrics that stuck with me. I can appreciate a couple of guitar parts, but that’s about it. Not likely to revisit.

Six Blade Knife - the ffff noise he makes makes me uncomfortable. But also he kinda sounds constipated throughout the song and I appreciate that Sultans of swing - already liked this song Lions - I like this one too It was ok overall for me, but not thrilled or anything
