Reviews (page 4 of 8)

Love the Arctic Monkeys and Alex Turner's distinctive voice. I didn't know about this supergroup until now and was pleasantly surprised! Props to them for blending their sound with Bowie and 60s British Pop to make something different. Glad I gave it a listen.

classic indie pop energy with a little too much reverb/echo, balanced out with a nice orchestral epic feel and an almost too-consistent nostalgic lost love energy. 3.75/5

Western vibe at times. One of Alex Turners better projects. Easy listen. Some unique progressions. Vocals same sameish but very solid. Lyrics are solid.

This is a great example of an album that has a lot of thought put into it. The combo of the lavish orchestrations with the determinedly dark and spacey moods / lyrics creates quite an album. I was surprised that of any indie albums I know, this was one of the first to show up, but I'm happy to rediscover it through this project

Quite good, Arctic Monkeys with a 60s rock feel, and a generous helping of spaghetti western vibes. Really quite good, but felt a bit samey? I'd heard the title track before, and a few songs here felt a lot like a slight variation of it. It was good for sure though, still a pretty badass album. Favourite: The Age Of The Understatement

Oh hey it’s the frozen Monkey man that’s cool (3.5/5)

Love this AM-adjacent style stuff, the first 4 songs were brilliant and there was a few filler songs but apart from that, it was definitely a bit of a pleasant surprise how good they were.

I don't know much about the Arctic Monkeys. I remember listening and enjoying some of their songs, but I wouldn't consider myself an expert. This, I am similarly in the dark over the lead's other project, "The Last Shadow Puppets". I don't know really how this compares or how this differs in regards to his other work, that I find myself wondering just how different this rating may be if I was. One track in and I'm struck by the daring and theatrical, yet accessible presentation. There's strong orchestration, playful whimsy, and James Bond-esque dramatics aplenty. I wouldn't say this is necessarily daring, but this is the kind of album where I'm surprised at how easy it comes down. It flows by quickly enough, sending me floating along from track to track until the album's conclusion.

Enjoyed it

Hieno pop-levy joka voittaa jopa useimmat AM-levyt. 4/5

Ihan jees Bowie-fiilistelyt. Sanotaan 3.5/5, mut menköön nelosena

Solid indie band, they remind me a bit of Arctic Monkeys. I remember one of the songs from high school. I like their style, but some songs sound similar to me. 4/5

Jeeeezus! What a startling intro... Then much of it had me feeling a little British, "Groovy baby!" I listened during my morning walk. It was walk planned for 40 minutes, and as I neared the end of the album (and the end of my walk), I realized that I had dropped my house key somewhere along the route. Stop! Go backwards! So, it was a grueling second listen, but I don't blame the album. I did find the key in the vegetation along the Goat Trail that was part of my walk. Shortly after, The Meeting Place came on and I sang to the key "I'm sorry I've left you."

The first listen of this really surprised me... the elements all seem to be there but I was surprisingly bored until I got to the last two songs. I kind of liked the music’s soundtrack feel with doses of the 60s, spaghetti westerns and lush orchestration. It seemed to be right up my alley. But it wasn’t coming together at all for me. Because I couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t enjoying this more I immediately gave it a second listen. That proved much more engaging. I was ready to give this a 3, but now it’s an easy 4 sometimes flirting with 5 territory.

The idea to see tgis album here is enough to make sweat go cold. First album from my playlist. Amazing work of two favourite artists. Between 4 and 5 but I'm not sure that I am ready to buy this vinyl. Definitely 5 in old rating system.

I’m a huge Arctic Monkeys fan, and also fell in love with this side project. It’s great, lush, at times, tensed and beautiful compositions. It makes me think of songwriters of days from the past. Scott Walker seems to be a huge influence here. All in all a great sidestep by Alex Turner and Miles Kane. I keep hoping for a 3rd effort. 8,5 out of 10

A- The Age of the Understatement - 3 Standing Next to Me - 4 Calm Like You - 4 Separate and Ever Deadly - 3 The Chamber - 4 Only the Truth - 5 My Mistakes Were Made For You - 5 Black Plant - 5 I Don’t Like You Anymore - 4 In My Room - 4 The Meeting Place - 4 Time Has Come Again - 4 This was awesome. It was dark and exciting, and with the backdrop of Hitman 3, a game I was playing that's dark and exciting, it almost felt like a soundtrack. I wanted to listen to this a lot of times before I reviewed, so I've been listening off and on for a couple weeks. I knew I would like it and wanted to marinate tf out of it. The sound was so fitting with Hitman 3 though, and now whenever I re-listen I have images of that amazing video-game in my head. This was very similar to Neon Bible. A familiar artist with an unfamiliar album, and it was equal parts dark and fun.

Lekker vrolijk. Topper: Standing Next To Me

Gene Pitney and the Shadows time travel to 21st century Sheffield. Stonking.

I heard similarities to Franz Ferdinand — a little more frenetic and willfully hearkening to a past era — though ultimately a little too all over and herky jerky to really speak to me. But I applaud the band for attaining something that's far afield of the beaten path. So ... what to rate it? 3 for my enjoyment factor, 4 for ambition being met? 4, because I enjoyed this more than expected.

I knew nothing about this band, nor have I heard the Arctic Monkeys, so this was a totally fresh listen for me. Sounds like a cool mix between Love's Forever Changes and a James Bond soundtrack. I dig it. I was unable to listen to this via Prime, so I had to sneak it in over YouTube, which doesn't allow for the best listening experience, but I really liked what I heard. Will keep an eye out for more from these blokes.

Solid whole album. Loved it. Will listen again.

3.5/5 I like this album but I don’t love it. I think the blend of 60/70 pop with contemporary indie rock was pretty unique at the time and I enjoyed listening to it but I think only a few songs were truly great

This felt like the soundtrack to a Bond movie in all the best ways. Were all the tracks a bit samey? Well, yes. But I liked what they were doing so that didn't bother me overmuch. The only reason this doesn't get full marks is that it seems a bit pretentious to release an album in 2008 that's so firmly fixed in a vibe that's at least 40 years older.

Kinda went hard. Didn't know this existed before, it's like a bonus arctic monkeys album

This is actually pretty cool

Leuke stem, vrolijke muziek.

Loved the energy this album brought, however towards the end of the album it became a little much.

This was an unexpectedly good album: did it fall off towards the end but it actually hit. I loved the groove and the authentic rock from some of the first tunes in the record and then that was smoothly followed by some more orchestral pieces which had a spy film-esc vibe to them. Overall I liked this album, not perfect in my eyes but worse a listen from a "British" supergroup headed by Alex Turner which I had never heard about.

Listened to this when it came out and thought it was fine. Really enjoyed it upon revisiting.

bra grejer detta

I don't know Miles Kane or The Rascals, but I definitely know Alex Turner and Arctic Monkeys. The album is very enjoyable. It starts on a high note and then loses the pace, which I don't think is particularly bad thing. The symphonic parts are great.

Some excellent songs on this album, "Only The Truth" especially.

This is a really interesting mix of pop/rock/orchestral, glad I listened to it. Black Plant and In My Room were the standout tracks for me. 4 stars right now but I could see this growing even more on. I'm probably listen again soon.

I was worried that this would be slow and boring, but it wasn't. It was a nice surprise. I think I may need another listen sometime later to fully form my opinion, but as it stands right now, it's pretty good. I would have even considered a 5 star if more of the songs had hooked me just a tad bit more. Way better than expected. My favourite song was My Mistakes Were Made For You.

More of a 3.5. Sonically good but doesn't last in the memory.

I like the production. There is the orchestra mixed in but it doesn’t define the songs. There are also all kinds of weird noises mixed in that give the songs texture. The result is an album of songs that have a lot of drama - in a good way. 4

I didn't have much time to listen to this, but I like the well-crafted songs and combination of baroque pop and rock. I'll listen to it more, no doubt, in the coming months.

favs - my mistakes were made for you - calm like you - the meeting place

day 6! I really love Alex Turner's voice and Arctic Monkeys as a whole but wasn't aware of this side project, so this was a great find. the instrumentation everywhere is cool, but so over-the-top on some songs that I didn't love how it drowned out the vocals. I do enjoy the vibe of this album though, it feels like a throwback and Beatlesque at times, as another reviewer described. I could see myself going back to this, though probably mostly the front half. 3.5/5 rounded up to 4 faves: Standing Next To Me, Separate And Ever Deadly

I went with zero expectations and it turned to be one of the most positive surprises i had so far. I was never a fan of Arctics Monkeys' sound, but this album is convincing me of giving them another shot. The album feels old-school, purposely cinematic, and the orchestral arrangements, well used here, elevates the overall atmosphere. Definitely enjoyed it.

It was the way she looked at me that caught me off guard. The subtle flick of the eyelashes and a half smile curled around her lips. I was entranced. My eyes were glued to her gaze, my throat was dry and my hands trembled. I approached. I couldn't get the stench of her fear out of my nostrils. Her crimson blood had stained my loafers. My semen dripped down her dead eyes and broken nose. This record was the perfect soundtrack for that lustful, horrific evening.

Solid. Better and more thoughtful than generic aughts indie, but still not knocking my socks off.

Immensely good fun.

The lead singer from Arctic Monkeys is apparent. The sounds are very similar also. Peppy at times and eerie at other times.

This is a fun album, I loved the dramatic flares added to the songs. Fav songs: The Age of the Understatement, Separate and Ever Deadly Least fav song: Time Has Come Again

Surprising I never heard of these guys. But I don't like the Arctic Monkeys so maybe every time I heard Turner's voice I turned the radio thinking it was them. I gotta admit I dug the orchestral sound, right from the opening title track. The booming drum sound was a personal fave (check it out on Standing Next to Me and Only the Truth) but all the strings were great too. Some other favorite tracks were Separate and Ever Deadly, Only the Truth, In My Room, and The Meeting Place. The album had a real old-timey sound - like part Sinatra (the jazz-ish elements), part Marty Robbins (the Mexican, old country sounding horns), part Moody Blues? I felt like it was a bit uneven on the first couple listens, and it might still be. But it kept growing on me and I'm having trouble shaking it. So for the breath of fresh air, I went up a notch.

HL: title track, "Calm Like You", "My Mistakes...", "The Meeting Place", "Black Paint" So, the Arctic Monkey's symphonic pop phase didn't come out of nowhere!

I feel like maybe this is an album you have to be in the mood for… I was in the mood for it

I have no idea how it got on this list, but it's pretty good stuff nonetheless. Sounds like an acoustic version of Cage the Elephant.

Loved some of the songs. Mistakes I make for you was really good lyrically.

I had never heard of these guys. I love the first couple of Artic Monkeys' albums though. Would listen again on a day with more time.

Reescuchar

First time listening. Love the orchestra backing!

Love Arctic Monkeys, this is that but weirder like queen, very abrupt vibe changes in the songs that feel sonically unique

A much better-sounding British rock band than Blur. The beginning and end of the album were pretty good, but the middle songs kind of blended together and weren't super memorable. Was still a pretty enjoyable experience. The lead singer has a good voice as it is the Artic Monkeys guy, and the backing tracks are all pretty well done. I like the almost spaghetti western-style instrumentation used in a large portion of the songs. A good 6/10 or 7/10

old west arctic monkeys. i actually really like the instrumentals here, and the vocals are familiar (= enjoyable).

Has a very 60s feel to the production. Alex Turner is an amazing lyricist but his delivery gets very tiring and samey. The songs would be better served by employing different singers to give them more life

I liked this one. Interesting use of the orchestra and very cinematic at times. We’ve had a handful of newer (90’s 2000’s) British bands doing a retro 60’s psychedelic rock thing and this was my favorite. Well done arrangement and production. 3.5

I really enjoyed this. I thought the entirety of the album was well-produced. I can't tell you why his voice DOESN'T annoy me but it doesn't and I feel like it should. I love supergroups like this. So cool when people who are friendly within the industry decide to collaborate with buddies in other bands. I would listen to a few of these songs again.

Wait, this sounds like Alex Tu-oh. It's Alex Turner. I enjoy me a bit of Arctic Monkeys, by that I mean that I listen to the singles from their first two albums and AM sometimes. This sounds nothing like the Arctic Monkeys I know though. It's almost like an orchestrated spy movie soundtrack with some early 60s pop influences. That sounds like an absolute trainwreck, but I'm a sucker for stupid shit so it tickled my fancy. Alex Turner should stop making boring lounge music and do more interesting stuff like this. I went in with no expectations, but I'm a fan.

I actually liked this. Was definitely the better album of the last 3.

This was really good, though after a while indistinguishable from arctic monkeys

This was pretty good! I think I'd want to listen to this a few more times to fully get into it, but I was a fan.

Some songs are cool, but It's not Alex Turner in his best.

Rerating

Cool, loungey groove

Projet très agréable

PREFS : The Age of the Understatement, Standing Next to Me, Calm Like You, Separate and Ever Deadly, Black Plant, I Don't Like You Anymore, Meeting Place MOINS PREF : The Chamber

Solid album. Favourite tracks: 'The Age Of The Understatement' and 'My Mistakes Were Made For You'. 4/5

Passable

Really liked what was going on here. Title track was fantastic. Might be gimmicky? I might not care.

Great album

I love the other works of these talented musicians, but it took me a minute and couple of listens to dig what they were doing on this record. I would probably give it a 3.5 if I could, but I'll round up and give it the 4 since it doesn't deserve a middling 3.

This album has a very different sound than I was expecting from a 2008 album (for one thing, it has a good sound, so that was a huge shock). It's a pop album that has a clear 60s influence, without sounding like they're trying to be a 60s band. It works really well for them. This album kept fading into the background for me, but every time it caught my attention, it sounded really good. Overall it's really well executed with great production. 4/5

This was a surprising gem for me. Knowing nothing of this band I really enjoyed this. It gave me strong movie score vibes.

This gave me a theatrical, dramatic feel that I kind of loved.

This record isn't life-changing, but it is still a very neat album. I honestly like this more than the space rock stuff AM is doing now.

Pretty solid, I hear some movie score influence, particularly Ennio Morricone. Otherwise pretty basic indie rock, but I won't complain. Would've dug this a lot back in '08 probably.

Decent little album. Get proper Bond vibes from it at times. Reminded me of Franz Ferdinand as well and spotify tried to play Jacqueline after the album finished so it agreed.

Turner. Alex Turner. Licensed to be in a dramatic and enjoyable Arctic Monkeys side project with an orchestral, Bond theme vibe. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: The Meeting Place Date listened: 28/11/22

Love the singer

Quite enjoyable as background music while I do my work.

Great surprise, had no idea Alex turner had another band.

Very underrated album. God music

Great effort in the sound and production. Great timeless record

Surprisingly entertaining album with Alex Turner's characteristic voice but more approachable, less Indie sounding songs than Arctic Monkeys

Really interesting. I'll listen again.

First listen. Always surprised when a newer band shows up and I haven’t heard of them.

Never heard this before, but enjoyed it. I’ll be generous and give it 4 stars.

I quite liked it as a very solid alternative rock album with some depth and feeling to it. Not one I'll actively re-visit. But I definitely don't mind having it on.

4.5/5. I love that Alex Turner lad.

sounds like arctic monkeys

This style fits Alex Turner so well he even forced it onto Arctic Monkeys too.

Brilliant storytelling on top of solid indie rock

Loved it

Real good

Really enjoyed it! Clocked the Arctic Monkeys immediately.

pretty good...enjoyed the alt rock sound.

Pretty good!

Unexpectedly fun

I liked this more than any arctic monkeys record

Beautiful album

Great artists and great song writing! Similar to Arctic Monkeys because it’s a collaboration with another artist.

I had never heard of the band before today and it took me until the 4th or 5th song to fully realize that the lead singer is also from the band Arctic Monkeys. I really enjoyed the sound and delivery of the music. I definitely want to check this out again and their other discography if there is any.

Really enjoyable, reminds me of arctic monkeys, the type of music is soothing and you can jam to it

Do I hear the fucking SHREK theme in here from Shrek 1? I definitely hear some 2008 pop influence in here but with much more elevated songwriting I don't know how else to explain it but this sounds very "spooky" 4 stars? I'm oddly hearing a lot of cinema theme influences in this one.

Good listen, fun and chill. Could be a 007 soundtrack.

I had no idea this was a thing. It's quite well-formed and catchy.

Very much enjoyed this album and how sort of orchestral it was. Also Alex turner is very talented from a vocal and writing perspective. Calm like you was the stand out for me

Pretty good record, good listen.

The arctic monkey guy

My Mistakes Were Made For You однозначно шедевр.

I really enjoyed it. I hadn't heard this before. What a treat!

A soundtrack to a film that you know but can't remember. A splendid mix.

Interesting collaboration between Miles Kane and Alex Turner, like an orchestral, less indie rock version of Turner's mother band. I remember buying it at the time, it was on repeat for a few weeks but not an all-time classic

Shit Slaps

Pretty much love everything Alex Turner does, so this was great.

Bangers men inte en femma

-the meeting place -the chamber -time has come again -black pant

Fun album. I love the two front men a little a lot a lot.

soothing sound

It gives me modern spaghetti western vibes. Fun, short songs. First song blew me away, thoroughly enjoyed this album.

Never heard of any of these people. It felt quite epic. Good old fun.

Unique and fun indie album. Love Alex Martin's voice. Upbeat, "cowboy" beats on the first half. Mix of psychedelic, classic rock, and indie sounds.

Bit of a journey, started off really well with great rock. some tunes straight from the 60s and some new wave type. overall 3.6

Cool prog rock album

New one for me.. It's interesting, I liked it.

Cool, good energy. I enjoyed this

Really good record

-I like the Old Western sound of "The Age Of Understandment" -Quote solid rock/alt-rock album. Nice consistent, quick songs

First time of listening and this is Arctic Mokeys Ft: Scott Walker methinks. Don't get me wrong I like it and can see it's merit for being on this List. I have always thought of Alex Turner as the Yorkshire Jacques Brel. Some nice tunes on this one I particularly liked the title track and "Seperate and Ever Deadly" Some good early 21st Century music harking back to the Music and Production values of the 60's. Rightfully on the list I think.

Only calling this album good is an understatement.

Never heard this before and a couple songs in was thinking, “This sounds like the guy from Arctic Monkeys but it can’t be.” And it was. And I like it!

I enjoyed it. Sounds like something i would have listened to in 2008.

Another album from my biggest blind spot, didn't know of them, never heard it before. Really liked it! Will listen again.

Basically a more boring version of 00s Arctic Monkeys. Still enjoyed it, but did not have the same oomph of the "real stuff."

I am an Arctic Monkeys fan but somehow missed this project. They say supergroup, though I must confess the only one I'm familiar with is Alex Turner. This is enough to inspire me to look up the others though. It's like Arctic Monkeys with an orchestra. At times it sounds like a Bond soundtrack, especially "In My Room."

An old favourite

alex turner = good

Now this is more my speed. I will definitely be listening to this again.

While listening I was thinking "This has a very Arctic Monkeys type of feel to it". Then I realized why. Good stuff!

Indie atual

was going to be a 3 but landed on 4

Never heard of this album. Deserves future listens.

Buena voz

I had no idea that this band existed, and that a few musicians from several bands (most notably from The Arctic Monkeys) had a hand in recording it. For the most part, I enjoyed the songs as they reminded me of certain bands like The Kooks. Favourite tracks include Standing Next To Me and My Mistakes Were Made For You cause I am basic.

Classic indie

Not bad, Not all that good either.

I really enjoyed this album, however I think conceptually it felt unable to really lean into this almost Americana rock fusion and so it was very lack luster in some areas. This isnt to say that it was bad, it certainly wasnt, and the opening track was excellent and by far my favorite, but it wasnt able to seem adventurous. 6/10

This album is on the book because their singer is also in the Arctic Monkeys, a band and a singer that I never liked. Good start Guess what ? I wasnt crazy abouth this one. Its like the Arctic Monkeys but a tiny bit worse in every way ? Probably because of the over production. Idk I dindt listened to this band in years. (Thanks god) The age of overproduced slop/5

Never heard of this but I know Arctic Monkeys. This was surprising compared to that. Sounded older style pop than this. It was alright.

Decent but not as exciting as some Arctic monkeys albums I have heard. Missing the energy

pretty good like I'm a teen again in 2015 but fresh and not completely associated with cringe except it is because i was into Elbow at the time and they were on Coles radio I wish I was not influenced by having been a teenager

Highlights: Calm Like You, My Mistakes Were Made For You, Standing Next To Me and The Age Of The Understated. 3.8

Not sure I would ever listen to this again but I actually really enjoyed it. The drama, the lore, feels like there's something here I'm missing but I'm intrigued

Pretty forgettable

Another album that I wouldn't have listened to without this app. The music reminds me of the 80's and has a very British orchestral rock sound. I don't think I'd go out of my way to play this album, but maybe... It definitely grew on me as I listened.

Nothing very exciting on here.

Very British 60s rock band feel

The beginning of the title track reminds me heavily of "Knights of Cydonia" with that sweeping, epic cinematic build. "In My Room" was also really cool, and the music across the track had kind of a spy movie vibe to it. It is pretty neat how they use a full orchestra to give these indie rock songs such a massive, theatrical scale. That sweeping string arrangement style really dominates the record and gives it a distinct vintage flair. However, after a while, a lot of the tracks start to blend together and feel a bit formulaic. Miles Kane and Alex Turner definitely have good chemistry, but the songwriting itself doesn't always live up to how grand the production sounds. It is a decent listen with some cool moments, but it wears out its welcome a bit by the end.

It was fine. I recognised the name but couldn't quite place it, then as soon as the first song kicked in I recalled that this is Alex Turner's side project. I don't know why he needed to do this separately from the Arctic Monkeys, but I guess there are reasons. It felt like a solid but hardly original Arctic Monkeys album to me.

Never listened. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Good - The opener reminds me a bit of The Coral. In fact a few tracks in and that is definitely the overall feeling I get from the sound. It suits Alex Turner but it doesn't quite have the magic of the Monkey's best work. There is something that just doesn't click. Good album nonetheless.

I get what they are going for but this just doesn’t work for me. I don’t hate Alex Turner’s voice but it is very much front and centre here to the detriment of the material. To me they should have gone all in with the orchestral theme and the whole enterprise would have been much more fun. A 3 for effort and intent

I've heard a few of these before, it's an obvious Alex Turner project came out the year before Humbug. I always have an issue when people's side projects just sound like their band. Coming off of Favourite Worst Nightmare this was a little different but sounds a lot like what we'd get soon from The Arctic Monkeys. It's fine, not essential but not bad.

It was okay. It just didn’t really do much for me and didn’t use Alex turner vocals to its full potential and the vocals and the music didn’t really go well together. But just because I like his voice and I did like listening to it I would rate it a 3/5. It just felt like something was missing idk why.

It's fine

Very 2000s sound. Kind of reminds me of the Arctic Monkeys but more variety in the sound and better vocals.

Competent. Very samey. I like Standing Next to Me the most. Of it’s time, but not bad.

Generic but entertaining

I didn’t need to hear that. It was fine, but, dammit, get your stuff together, list maker!

The quality is way better than indie landfill, but we didn't need yet another project. So sadly it becomes indie landfill.

Aggressively mid.

I liked it. Never heard of this band, but a pleasant listening experience.

I thought this was pretty good

i know of Arctic Monkeys, though i've never been a "fan" per se. still, i hope this is at least decent. thank GOD this isn't another 1+ hour album for once, i've had too many this month The Age of the Understatement - 4/5 Standing Next to Me - 4/5 Calm Like You - 4/5 (more like 3.5 really) Separate and Ever Deadly - 3/5 The Chamber - 3/5 Only the Truth - 3/5 My Mistakes Were Made for You - 5/5 Black Plant - 4/5 I Don't Like You Anymore - 3/5 In My Room - 3/5 Meeting Place - 4/5 The Time Has Come Again - 2/5 Average score: 3.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ it's a decent project. i don't think it tops Arctic Monkeys, but i didn't necessarily think it would either. the western-sounding instrumentation here is very pleasant, however, i personally feel like Alex Turner's vocals are better suited there for a more run-of-the-mill indie rock sound (like AM). that being said, this was still plenty good. some tracks were a little mediocre in my opinion, but i've certainly heard worse albums off this list, and there were a handful i'd come back to hear again

Smiths ahh

Dramatic baroque pop and orchestral rock built from sweeping strings, sharp guitars, cinematic percussion, and swaggering vocals feels like speeding through a spy film directed by romantics with inflated egos and perfect hair—extravagant, theatrical, and irresistibly stylish even when it borders on self-parody. The album throws emotional intensity and vintage grandeur at every song with complete confidence. Its excess occasionally overwhelms the songwriting, but the sheer charisma carries it through mostly. Unfortunately nit until the end. Fitting the metaphor: okay, even nice to see once, not sure if I will revisit.

Track 2 pretty good

Didn't "wow" me but ok background music

Recognised Alex Turners voice right away. It was a good album, never a moment I didn't enjoy it. That said, I did kind of miss a spark. It's all solid but not really making me long for more. If only it just had 1 real enjoyable hit on it or something.

ohh das hani iwie nöd erwartet scho krass was en wiedererchennigswert d stimm vom arctic monkeys guy het kei ahnig isch absolut ah mier verbii. finds cool, was sie probiert hend, aber han wenig chönne demit ahfange. weg dem gits es knapps 3 ahh s orchester isch cool gsi!!

Good but feels like a joke. The Coral tread this ground more earnestly and just better.

Although this is definitely *not* the style or pace of music I particularly enjoy, I'll give full credit to the Arctic Monkeys alums for diving headfirst into the hoary past to do the likes of Scott Walker (or perhaps even Nancy Sinatra) proud with an ersatz baroque pop album. There weren't too many tracks that called out to me, but the video for the title track was pretty fun to watch (and apparently surprisingly dangerous to shoot), and "My Mistakes Were Made for You" had a bit more meat than the rest (plus a good car-crash-scene video). It was a bit disappointing that I couldn't easily find a "1001 albums" edition that actually had this album reviewed, but that also doesn't particularly surprise me, as it's not all that interesting (or apparently lastingly die-worthy).

First thought was "This sounds like the Arctic Monkeys" and upon further analysis, yeah that makes sense.

The Alex Turner + orchestral arrangements combo works well occasionally, but most often the word that better describes this album is merely "competent"

Arctic Monkeys, but not. They're not something I seek out often, but I respect. Same story here

The Arctic Monkeys watched a spaghetti western

Wasn't bad but nothing stood out to me.

It's a good album, but I'd rather have more Alex Turner and significantly less Miles Kane.

I really don't know how I feel about this album. It was performed well. There was a nice variety of ideas and genres hinted at. Some spaghetti western vibes here, 60's-pop there. But, overall, I didn't FEEL anything. It was just...nice. I enjoyed it (far more than I have other projects by the same musicians), but it just felt a bit lifeless. One of those great middle ground 3.5 albums. This one's going to get a 3 just because it felt sterile, and I doubt I will revisit many tracks off it again.

Fav song: My Mistakes Were Made For You

Kelvollista indie rockia, jossa mongertaa Arctic Monkeysin Alex Turner.

No, because why am I listening to an Arctic Monkeys side project before I've ever even heard an actual Arctic Monkeys album? This one was all set to be a typical "why is this here?" 1, but the only problem with that is that I actually kind of liked it? Like, they sound like Belle and Sebastian, who I love! Not in that they're copying Belle and Sebastian, but in that they're clearly making this with the same set of influences that Belle and Sebastian were working with.

Well, at least it is short.

I didn't realize Alex Turner was in another rock band. At points it sounded like a modern version of a Western soundtrack, and sometimes sounded very orchestral. Not bad, but nothing really stood out enough for me to want to put on my playlist.

I don’t understand why this wasn’t just the arctic monkeys and I also don’t understand how you can call this a supergroup. Need another name for something like this where it’s really just a mish mash. Maybe a mish mash. Start of the album was pretty good but it fell off. Very james bond

Britpop

I liked it. Feels a bit like a surf-ier adiscount Arctic Monkeys, ironically. Fav tracks: Calm Like You, I Don't Like You Anymore

solo llega a 3 estrellas por alex turner

Its inspirations are rooted firmly the sounds of the 60s; I wouldn’t go so far as to call it “pastiche”, but definitely homage. This was probably unique to Turner’s body of work when it first came out, but to me it sounds like a late-period Arctic Monkeys record. That’s not a bad thing, but I’m not sure what makes this album special, I guess. It’s totally fine; it had its moments but as a whole didn’t stick to me.

Lindo disco. Buen descubrimiento.

Despite listening to this album several times today, it just isn’t making any lasting impression on me. It’s fine, I can’t point to anything I dislike about it. It just doesn’t stand out in any way.

For some reason this album took me forever to get through, even though I liked it. Reminds me of western movie genre music.

I was honestly interested to see that this album on the list. The only bit of trivia I knew was this was a collaboration between Alex Turner and Miles Kane. A very bold step musically considering the indie rock sound already established from Turner's first two albums with Arctic Monkeys, and in a way it shows the direction they would go on Humbug. I feel fair giving this 3 stars as I need more time to grow on me but on the plus side its just as cohesive as the aforementioned albums.

Fun, British psych inspired pop. Mixed degrees of quality, but overall a really solid album.

I was here for this first time round and it came and went without much fanfare. I applaud the idea and the execution but didnt have fond memories beyond a gimmick. On relisten, its a very good gimmick but still lacks authenticity. Good songs, great orchestration and lots of fun but it lacks soul

I was into this band, thinking they were an obscure pop group from the 60s, but this album is from 2008, so I guess they get extra points for sounding like something I like.

I’m not that familiar with The Arctic Monkeys but this seems like a spinoff doing the same thing as the main band. It’s a pretty easy listen though

Having never heard of this album before, I was very excited to discover it. I generally like super groups, and I like the original bands the members were in before forming this. I didn't really connect with this, though. Good, but not all that memorable.

Ok, cool. Def sthg here. Dig. 3 stars.

It's like a stepping stone album before Arctic Monkeys abandoned the style that made them famous and adopted this style of music instead. Doesn't deserve a place on the list but Brit bias strikes again. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

Decent

Such an understatement that I’ve already forgotten it

It's a record that sounds like a 60's record but sung by the Arctic Monkeys. It's nice but there is no "waow" factor. Favorite Songs: The Age of Understatement

If you aren't familiar with the Last Shadow Puppets, they are a supergroup fronted by Artic Monkeys lead singer Alex Turner and Rascals lead singer Miles Kane. The group was going for a 60s pop with a soundtrack feel, and they definitely accomplished that. In fact, I think if you listened to any of the songs on the album you would guess that they were the theme song for a James Bond movie. I was already familiar with a couple of the songs and liked them. I'd say this album is good, not great, and a bit repetitive.

Nice surprise. The drum beat reminiscent of a punk past

Not bad

Actually pretty good!

Cinematic rock

Tries hard to not be an Arctic Monkeys record, but that voice is so distinctive that it still sounds like an Arctic Monkeys record. A decent set of songs, but probably not unique enough to justify a place here.

I did like this album and I guess in hind sight this maybe paved the way for the last 2 Artic Monkeys albums, tranquility and cars. This is quite laid back, and mellow which is definitely a departure from early AM records. Good!

Pretty good

Fine to pretty good. Not gonna return to it but I liked what it was going for. No standouts.

1. The Age of the Understatement - 6 It's instrumentally and lyrically good but it gives off Artic Monkeys and Knights of Cydonia by Muse vibes. The sound isn't unique enough on the album. From all the big British bands of this ear (except for Oasis), this is a sound/style I've heard a hundred times over already. 2. Standing Next to Me - 5 Choruses are a bit over-repetitive and over-simplified but it works given how short the song is. The key changes out of the choruses, into the bridges, and back into the verses are very subtle but excellent and provides a lot to the track. 3. Calm Like You - 7 Fun song with a great sound and really fun lyrics. 4. Separate and Ever Deadly - 5 Solid song. Lot to like here with the pace and instrumentals. Nothing over the top phenomenal but a solid track nonetheless. 5. The Chamber - 5 Rinse and repeat the sound and style of Separate and Ever Deadly. 6. Only The Truth - 3 Instrumentally this track is a lot of fun in the second half. The intro is very weak and lyrically it's completely forgettable. 7. My Mistakes Were Made For You - 10 Great track. Lyrically really good but the instrumentals are the highlight. The way they sound in the intro and bridges are absolutely incredible. The was the strings and brass as used is so subtle but adds so much. Could be a James Bond track. All around, excellent. 8. Black Plant - 7 Incredibly catchy tune. Choruses are more mellow than the verses and it works well on the track. Very metaphoric track as well. 9. I Don't Like You Anymore - 10 Love the intro and the very light guitar being led into the larger sound of the track. Very solid lyrically as well, it's the marquee track on the album for me. 10. In My Room - 8 Much more bombastic a sound than the rest of the album but works really well. All around a lovely sounding track. 11. The Meeting Place - 10 Lovely song. Lyrically it's excellent and the subtle fade into the strings during the outro is a touch of pure class. Best track on the album so far. 12. Time Has Come Again - 4 It's alright. Guitar sounds nice on it but it's nowhere near as strong a track as anything else on the album. Song also ends pretty abruptly. Average Rating: 6.67 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 3.33 Rounded Down: 3 Stars

Overall: 5/10 Despite being an Alex Turner project made at the same time as my favourite Arctic Monkeys albums, I found this to be a little bland and overproduced. I thought the string arrangements were super distracting and didn't add anything worthwhile to the songs. Fav Song: Only the Truth

it's ok. 2.5 or so

Me lo escuché de adolescente. Me gustaban algunos temas.

Yllättävän kiva levy vaikka ihan tuntematon itelle.

Sometimes a super group is just a group.

Stark 3a.

This was ok... it sounded like it was trying to be retro but it didn't actually sound like any retro music so it was weird... it was like a warped version of what the 70's might have been, or as interpreted by someone with different ideas as me. I enjoyed some of the songs but overall nothing jumped out that I will come back to.

Could immediately tell it was Arctic Monkeys singer. Pretty interesting and I enjoyed it.

Sounds good, not too long, but cryptic lyrics

(4/7) a seemingly deliberate attempt to create "art" that no one asked for

The grew on me as the album went on. I like that it sounds like a soundtrack or at least sounds cinematic like a Bond movie.

we are the survivors of landfill indie

7.5 / 10

I was so surprised to find out this band is like an arctic monkeys spin off It feels like Im running away from a heist on a train Sanding next to me - i love when a song incorporates violins Calm like you is very classic arctic monkeys to me. giving it a 8/10 very cohesive and i liked the style but it was very similar to arctic monkeys it was hard to tell a big difference between the two

I'm almost disappointed in how much I enjoyed this. And yet..I did.

Good, but it just feels like another Arctic Monkeys record. Don't understand the cultural significance that put it here.

first time hearing any of this as far as I know, though none of it was particularly memorable, so maybe I've heard tracks before and just don't realize it. generally speaking I really like Alex Turner's songwriting and think Arctic Monkeys has some strong output over its existence. these songs feel like impulses he wanted to get out there, and good for him for linking up with some mates and doing the thing. looks like this album came out after the first couple Arctic Monkeys albums were released. I can hear how some of the moves they're making on this album needed another outlet aside from the more well-known group. all of it was fine but just not v compelling to me upon this listen.

It’s like the Arctic Monkeys got asked to do the next Bond soundtrack.

Groovy baby, yeah!

I mean it’s alright. It’s the guy from Arctic Monkeys doing his best version of 60’s orchestral pop. Doesn’t quite have the same energy as those first couple Monkey’s albums. Highlights were Standing Next To Me, Calm Like You, and The Meeting Place.

★★★½

Most of me hates the singing, annoyingly the instrumentation is somewhat ok

Another album that makes me wonder why it’s here. It isn’t BAD by any stretch; I actually enjoyed a good bit of it. But it was ultimately unremarkable. Fun mid-late 00’s indie rock, and that’s about it.

It’s fine. They had two ideas which they repeat over and over: the ballad type which became a staple of later Arctic Monkeys’ albums (Tranquility Base and The Car; the crap albums) and the more energetic anthem with the driving beat. That’s it. Also, given how unknown The Rascals are, I sort of object to this project being called a “supergroup”. Audioslave and Them Crooked Vultures? Yes. Supergroups. These guys? Not so much. It’s an Arctic Monkeys side project. Anyway, I digress. This is inoffensive, but uninspiring. Background music which will probably not be on this list for too much longer.

No private session used for Spotify. I wasn't aware of this band, but it turns out I was aware of the folks that are in it. Dramatic, orchestrated rock. I listened to it three times and didn't find anything I couldn't do without, probably because I am not a huge fan of 60's music.

Lavish and intense

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not var sannsynligvis mitt mest spilte album omkring 2007-9. Tittelsporet hjemsøker meg fortsatt: decided... to sneak up away from your stomach... and try your pulse.

Today on British men with overinflated egos…

its okay, a cut above the usual indie rock, I can kinda see what they were going for, also the faster tempo is nicer here too.

Eh it was fine. Sounded like a shittier Arctic Monkeys. Not bad but not very memorable either

I'm a fan of some of Alex Turner's stuff with the Arctic monkeys. This was alright but a bit forgettable by comparison.

I was thinking that this sounds a lot like Arctic Monkeys and then saw that Alex Turner is a part of this group. Good album, some very Arctic Monkeys type songs. Couple forgettable ones too but decent

Nostalgic garage rock, but not in the way you think

I actually liked this more than the Arctic Monkeys album we got! The tasteful application of strings, which are present but never overwhelming, and the tinges of spaghetti western influence elevate this for me, to a high 7/10.

Definitely not bad and I applaud the interesting effort, but it didn’t click with me despite listening twice. Again, I listened twice and could not name a single song that stood out or hooked me in the moment. Also, Alex Turner is so overwhelmingly British.

theatrical reminds me of ludo

This side project doesn't really feel like it's important enough to include here, but it's not a bad album. From my 2018 copy of the book: "I Don't Like You Anymore is a distorted nightmare of psycho guitar twang and vertiginous rush." Which like, no it fucking isn't lmao. This is an extremely approachable alt rock record.

Great sound but crammed with lyrics as other reviewers have said. No song stood out to me. Maybe good for a long roadtrip where you want to just drive and zone out?

it's like the Arctic Monkeys, but not as good!

Funny coincidence that this album came up as I was in Sheffield today. Much more enjoyable than any Arctic Monkeys album. I liked the inclusion of strings but they felt a bit underdeveloped.

I guess it was kinda okay, boring tho 5/10

That sure was 35 minutes of music.
