Arctic Monkeys

tranquility base should be on here before this’n but its still a 5

Great album and probably marks and interesting turn on Alex Turner's songwriting to branch out from his indie rock roots. You can definitely hear the influence of the soundtrack composers on The Last Shadow Puppets, the orchestral elements in particular give this a really epic quality. Considering there's also a 60s / mod type feel too, i thought it actually sounded incredibly fresh in 2008 and still does now

i will never not love an alex turner strings album. fucking BANGERS

A true dirtbag album (complimentary)

dirty glam crooning..... love it.

This is the only one on here that I listened to again after my first listening!

I saved a couple songs from this album. I really liked the themes throughout, whole the way they sang fit the emotion. Each song had a different sound to it

Sort of the soundtrack to an as yet unmade Austin Powers film, in a massively good way.

This is another gem of an album that I have never heard before this list. This was a fantastic throwback. A modern tack on some 60s rock that was a lot of fun. I will definitely be returning to this one.

pretty good. alex turner knows what he's doing

This was an unexpected new favorite. This album has so much energy and great melodic twists and turns. Definitely something I'll be replaying many times in the near future. 4.5/5

It’s like the Arctic Monkeys decided they wanted to make a 60s album and they killed it

I’m at a 5. I’ve had a pretty healthy respect for Arctic Monkeys for a while, and I think I might’ve read about this side project from Alex Turner once on a Wikipedia dive, but I’ve never listened to it until now. Of course, calling this an Alex Turner side project sort of undermines how much of a group effort this truly is, so some big kudos to Miles Kane, James Ford & Zach Dawes. With that said… yeah, this is an Alex Turner side project. It is not another Arctic Monkeys album, instead opting for a more cinematic feel, inspired by stuff like James Bond soundtracks, golden age Hollywood (the strings are SO good on this album) & spaghetti westerns of the 60s, blended with some of the indie rock sensibilities of Arctic Monkeys (& everyone else within that general style) to create a really cool set of tracks that feel really captivating, even without the lyrics or vocals to go with them. It is a blessing that the lyrics & vocals match their quality – in essence, this is a much, MUCH better version of “16 Lovers Lane” by the Go-Betweens, which our group got about 6 days ago. All of these tracks tackle the same ideas of breakups, manipulation, peer pressure, and more, but this album underlines them all with a true sense of lost connection & lost love, written with such earnesty that they all feel plausible, real, and more emotionally fruitful. That added sense of relatability ultimately gives a lot more for Alex Turner to work with vocally, and he knocks it out of the park. There’s a really strong flexibility to his voice, and while it’s explored a bit more on “AM” (which is CRIMINALLY not on this list), the earliest showcases of it are here, gliding through angrier & softer tones in a way that pulls the proper sense of emotion out of each track here. If you’re not a fan of Arctic Monkeys or other bands with a similar style, this album will probably not hit like that. I loved this style though, and I really, really enjoyed this album – it’s a breezy 35 minutes that feels perfectly paced. If anything, I’m kicking myself for reading about this on Wikipedia years ago & not bothering to give it a listen, because this is right down my alley. One of the better albums from the back half of the 2000s that we’ve gotten so far, and a very easy 5 for me. Great stuff.

2007 England. Symphonic pop, pop rock, baroque pop. !!!!!

4.5 I'm being slightly generous here but unfortunately not even I am immune to Alex Turner

Surprised to learn that this is also a music project by Alex Turner. Really love his voice and the distinctive sound

Voices dance, strings swell, and songs stampede in this sweeping symphony of swagger and melancholy.

Alle! Calm Like You

Arctic Monkeys never disappoints. Their boisterous rock intertwined with their soft and heartfelt acoustic songs here makes this an album worth listening to because of how much of this album you can relate to your personal life: rowdy and chaotic at times, but also beautiful.

Sounded a lot like Arctic Monkeys and then I read the lineup. Makes sense why there’s so many bangers here.

Loved it ever since it came out in 2008

Originally was gonna give it a 4.5 and be 4 stars on here, but then I looked further into it ARTIC MONKEYS????? gang come back I want another album from the last shadow puppets

Alex Turner, please come back

I really liked this.

An all time great for me

This is the 51st album I’m rating. Whenever I see an album cover with a woman as the focus I assume she’s in the band. Adding to my Playlist - The Age of the Understatement, Standing Next to me, Calm Like You, Separate and Ever Deadly, The Chamber, Only the Truth, My Mistakes Were Made for You, Black Plant, I Don’t Like You Anymore, In my Room, The Meeting Place, and Time Has Come Again. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. All in all I liked 12/12 songs. This wasn’t very interesting but it was pretty good.

Very interesting album.

I liked: - Orchestral influences - Vocals and lyrics - Melodic lines - Experimental song structures - The way the rhythm section complements the melody Favorite Track: The Age of the Understatement

Not capable of rating this objectively

Fabulous

A Masterpiece

Um ok I loved this

Loved this Album. Brilliantly crafted.

This one is a keeper!

I’ll throw this on for the laid-back retro mood, but the propulsion and drama surprises me every time. It’s always better than I remember it. I think it’s an understated album, just doing its own thing, but it’s stood the test of time for me. I also like the other TLSP album and the last two Arctic Monkeys albums, which are in a similar style.

Extremely chad.

Love this album. Don’t think it should be here.

Short, varied, exciting, fun!

Considering Arctic Monkeys are my favourite band of all time I embarrassingly have not given these guys as much attention as I should have. Excellent album with lots of hints to Josh Homme's influence and also the new sound of Tranquillity Base. Stands strong as not just a side project but a fully formed and seperate being.

Unexpected good album.

Such a sick album. Sometimes punky, oftentimes lovely. I heard it three times and it's only gotten better on each listen. I also love the album cover which isn't that important but still appreciated, especially when the artwork matches the album contents.

I AM AN ALEX TURNER AND MILES KANE LOVER

Parallel universe to Arctic Monkeys and it's great. I've always liked the dryness in Alex Turner's voice and lyrics as it's always been pretty tongue in cheek and kind of funny and that carries over here. I already knew My Mistakes Were Made for You, but I alos liked Standing Next to Me, I Don't Like You Anymore, and In My Room. Really I liked most of this album, will definitely listen again.

Kind of like my favorite era of the Arctic monkeys but slightly harder arrangements

One of my favorites

I'm surprised about how much I liked this as it's not really my style but I really enjoyed it. Improved version of Arctic monkeys in my opinion. Would listen to it again

Alex turner

I’m about 50 albums in and this is the first that I both never heard of and really enjoyed. I’ll be looking into more from this group.

someone please let alex turner write a bond theme hes begging you 🙏

What if I’m giving this 5 stars! I enjoyed it okay!!! Could change my mind later.

The Last Shadow Puppets has got to be one of my favourite 'Supergroup' bands. The combined vocals and styling by both Alex Turner & Miles Kane is, in my ears, perfection. With the stylings of mid sixties pre-psychedelic pop music helped along by period reverb settings, mariachi drum beats, horn sections and rapid strum acoustic guitars it's feels like you're in the middle of your very own car chase scene in a James Bond movie, whizzing through the mountains of Europe. Best: Black Plant Worst: Meeting Place

I love this album starting with the cover

Muse but good

This album is a solution in need of a problem, only the "problem" was "What would an Ennio Morricone indie band record sound like." Only, that isn't a problem as much as it is an opportunity. And these folks, took it, ran with it, and finished the race with the aplomb needed for something so garish and extravagant that the world is better off.

Loved!!!

Interesting retro sound. I really enjoyed listening to this album. It was a musical experience.

Great album, wasn't aware that this is one half of the Arctic Monkeys

Everything that has an Alex Turner signature is gold!

Knew this album before this and really liked it but for some reason always listened to arctic monkeys and not to this so much

Love every second of this album

One of my all time favourites. Love every aspect of this album and it greatly increases my Alex Turner man crush

Gut gemachtes Indie-Pop-Rock-Album.

Alex Turner 😍😍😍😍😍🫶🫶🫶

never heard of these guys and immediately heard alex turner. great album. listened to it while i walked my pooch

Sounded like a British country album, but moved to a more indie vibe. Great experience through and through

I had a great time listening to this album. Can't really go wrong with Alex Turner. My favourite song is My Mistakes Were Made For You

Alex Turner's voice is so sexy

This was fun! I want to spend some more time with this album

Oh hell yes a supergroup featuring Alex Turner. I knew the voice sounded familiar when I started the album. Love the strings in Stand Next to Me. Then more strings on The Chamber are also great. I love rock bands that incorporate strings. Ok now this is just turning into a straight up symphony with Only the Truth. Such an awesome album from a band that I did not know existed, I wish they were in my life much earlier. The orchestral instruments that they are able to blend in with the rock is one of my favorite styles of music. And with Alex Turner being the front man and this guy Miles being the backing vocals for most of the songs just creates a perfect vocal combination. Easy 5, going to go listen to their other album right after this.

Superb. often super groups fall short of the mark. But Alex turner rises above the crowd in a brittastic celebration of English rock

AMAZING STUFF HELL YES TLSP2023

That voice makes it for me

Lightning in a bottle, this. Tribute to the old days, but brought up to date.

it was so fucking nice i love it

Loved it and makes me want to listen to more of this and Arctic Monkeys.

Wow, I sure am glad that we listened to some Scott Walker earlier in this project so I know his influence when I hear it. I can't believe this music is so modern --- it sounds like a movie from the 60s or maybe a few different movies from the 60s. Very fun!

2 topartiesten met gevoel voor megalomanie. Dat maakt een topplaat natuurlijk

I'm glad I got this album - it's great. It's a 9 out of 10, so a strong '4' or a weak '5'.

More of this, please. It has this complexity that doesn't appear too often in popular music, but it's still easy to listen.

Wow. That was great. Great voice fits so well with music that I am not sure if it could be done better. Music is very rich and it really profits when You listen it on heaphones or just good setup. I should listen it couple times more and listen lyrics more carefully

Oh I love Alex Turners voice. I had a couple of songs from this album already but I'd never heard it fully. Very enjoyable!

I mean I love A. Monkeys. So this album just hits different. Great sound throughout and very happy to have this list to help me find albums like this. Ez 5.

I was honestly very surprised with how much I enjoyed this album. Very solid songs all throughout without one bad song in my opinion. That’s what having Alex Turner will do for you.

This album rules, it put me in mind of early Panic! at the Disco with some cool touches that give it its own flair. I’m a sucker for music that includes brass and strings in fun or unexpected ways.

Fantastic album start to finish, felt almost like a video game OST at first and I really loved the sound

I’m positively surprised, for real. 5/5. Highlight: The Age of The Understatement

This was a genuine revelation. Orchestral instrumentation and production combined with Alex’s grimy voice wasn’t something I expected, but I really loved it. Has the vibe of an actor in full sci-fi makeup chain smoking on set. Calm like you was particularly excellent, though every song had something great about it.

Astounding! What arresting sound! It feels cool and dark and frenetic and wonderful. Even two songs in and I have a hard time imagining not loving the rest of the album. And I loved it.

Brilliant

Muito bom. Revisitar!

This album really reminds me of Arctic Monkeys, and not just because of Alex Turner's vocals. The sorrow tone and characteristic Turner lyrics really tie it in. The instrumentals are so beautiful, especially in Only The Truth. Also, I just have to mention the strings, it makes everything so much more magical. Overall, it's a good album and I could see myself going back to it at some point. Fave track(s): Separate and Ever Deadly, Only the Truth, I Don't Like You Anymore, The Meeting Place

Rating: 10/10

Super goede cd!

Love, love, love, love.

Good enough to explore band’s other albums

Masterpiece!

I really liked it.

Loved it

I loved the album and plan to listen more by this artist

Brilliant start and trailed off towards the end but this was new to me so very glad to learn of some Arctic Monkeys adjacent stuff.

as ultimas sombras dos boneco

Muy chulo

like the Arctic Monkeys predecessor. Great, super fun, British pop rock!

I liked this one, has a good vibe.

Maybe it’s nostalgia but I really enjoyed listening to this again.

Really liked this. Sounds like a b-side to "Favourite Worse Nightmare" to me. "Separate and Ever Deadly" my favourite track.

Yoooo lesgooo!! Didn't think this was on the list. Totally deserves it though. Absolutely love this album. The energy is great and the instrumentation is so refreshing! 5

I loved almost all these songs. In a lager way the sound they have reminds me of Wilco. I thought this was a great album and would listen again.

Nota: 3.7

This sounds like an undiscovered album from the ‘60’s British Invasion, or a band following the lead of Oasis, which is kind of the same thing. I never heard of these guys, but the album was pleasant to listen to. No complaints here.

It would have been easy for this to slide into pastiche. They clearly have sixties pop music at the heart of this, throw in some ghost train atmospherics and bond theme strings. Nothing we haven’t heard before…..but Alex Taylor’s way with words brings a suppleness and a sparkle to it. Musically it’s agile too and the production reduces the nostalgic factor. A hugely listenable album.

The retro 70’s feel of this album is exquisite. Well done.

I actually quite enjoyed this but struggle to see it as particularly interesting or likely to have any real influence

It's like the soundtrack to a movie from the 60s that's only just been unearthed, lost for decades and finally rediscovered. There's a lot of music you could call "cinematic", but The Last Shadow Puppets manages to capture pure cinema in just 35 minutes here, delivering rocking riffs and soaring orchestras to create a truly captivating listen. Gorgeous production, poetic lyricism, and addictive vocals from Turner and Kane. Awesome stuff. Favourite track: Black Plant Least favourite track: The Meeting Place

Rounding up from 3.5. Liked this a lot.

A fun album, full of personality. I love the voice of Alex Turner Fav songs - The Age Of The Understatement, Separate And Ever Deadly 4/5

With the orchestral arrangements giving the music a cinematic and sweeping feeling, the Scott Walker influence on this thing cannot be understated. Alex Turner's and Miles Kane's youthful and working class voices add an interesting and modern twist on the classic baroque pop sound. Sticking to tradition of those albums, the album has a brief runtime and doesn't differentiate from the sound all that much. This is much better than the previous two Arctic Monkeys albums. Those records tried and failed to capture a vintage and smoky feeling, which is executed much better on here.

There are albums that announce themselves immediately and albums that reveal themselves gradually. This one manages to do both. The opening title track arrives like a cavalry charge, all swagger, strings and emotional overstatement, and for a while it is tempting to hear the record simply as a brilliantly executed exercise in style. Scott Walker, Jacques Brel, Morricone, Gainsbourg and a thousand half-remembered European films seem to be swirling around every arrangement. Yet the longer it runs, the clearer it becomes that there is more going on than homage. The first thing that struck me was how completely shameless these songs are. Modern songwriting often feels obliged to apologise for intensity. A feeling is expressed, then immediately undercut with irony, self-awareness or a joke. Not here. Every emotional impulse is treated as if it deserves orchestral accompaniment and a helicopter shot over Lake Geneva. Women become forces of nature. Rivals become handsome mavericks. A raised glass becomes an act of statecraft. The album's title is one of the great jokes in modern pop because understatement is the one thing it never practices. What saves it from self-parody is commitment. Turner and Kane never wink. The songs are allowed to be ridiculous because they believe in themselves absolutely. Even the most outlandish lines are delivered with complete conviction. The result is exhilarating and exhausting in almost exactly equal measure. Listening through it this time, I became increasingly convinced that the album is far more structured than its reputation suggests. Beneath the strings and bravado runs a surprisingly coherent emotional arc. The early songs are dominated by obsession. People are watched, interpreted and mythologised. Projection follows close behind. The women in these songs often function less as people than as screens onto which longing, insecurity and fantasy are projected. Eventually reality intrudes. The projections begin to fail. Rivals emerge. Repetition becomes visible. Relationships reveal themselves to be less magical and more complicated than the narrators had hoped. Disappointment sets in. Then comes abandonment, embodied most clearly in Meeting Place, where the grand drama gives way to the much sadder image of somebody left standing in a place whose purpose has disappeared. The relationship has gone, but the location remains. The echo remains. By the time we arrive at The Time Has Come Again, something has changed. The emotional temperature drops. The album finally discovers acceptance. Not happiness, not reconciliation, but recognition. The narrator realises that these experiences are not unique catastrophes but recurring features of being human. The song's title is telling. Not "The Time Has Come". "The Time Has Come Again". The lesson has returned. The wound has returned. Life continues. Musically, the record is astonishingly assured. James Ford and Owen Pallett deserve enormous credit for arrangements that do far more than decorate the songs. The strings act as propulsion, commentary and atmosphere. Sometimes they push the songs forward like a pursuit sequence from a lost ITC adventure serial. Sometimes they linger afterwards, gently lowering the emotional curtain. The Morricone influences are obvious, but there are moments that evoke old television themes, forgotten European thrillers and the kind of cultural memory assembled from afternoon repeats and half-remembered broadcasts rather than direct experience. The Sheffield roots never disappear entirely. The arrangements may inhabit an imaginary Europe of spies, orchids and diplomatic intrigue, but Turner's eye for behaviour remains grounded in observation. Gestures, glances, habits and conversational moments carry the songs. The scenery is imported; the narrator remains recognisably northern. What impressed me most, though, is that the album ultimately earns its grandeur. It begins by insisting that every feeling deserves a string section. It ends by understanding that feelings are temporary, recurring and universal. That journey gives the spectacle meaning. Nearly twenty years later, it remains one of the most entertainingly overcommitted records of its era. It is melodramatic, excessive, occasionally absurd and frequently magnificent. Most importantly, it understands that style and substance are not enemies. The style is the substance. The orchestra, the swagger, the references and the emotional inflation are not distractions from the album's themes. They are the themes. The Age of the Understatement turns out to be a record about what happens when obsession gradually gives way to understanding. It just happens to tell that story with enough strings to soundtrack the fall of a small European republic.

This album has a 60's pop and groove to it. Sometimes is orchestral, sometimes it sounds like a soundtrack. It's fun and good. Pitchfork: 7.5 Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs The Age Of The Understatement Standing Next To Me Calm Like You My Mistakes Were Made For You

Pretty nice album, liked it.

Didn't know this existed! Cool record, very fluid, still very Alex Turner. Nice, good fun.

This is like Turner after breaking up a toxic relationship and glowing up on Insta stories.

New to my ears, but a great addition. Good alt music, listened to a couple of times already. If you ike the genre, you know them; if not, you should still enjoy.

Is it ironic that I’m listening to this which is yesterday’s album? Day 13 - younger than yesterday by the Byrds Got that fun 60s twang, feels like a cozy sweater and a smile at the sunshine. 7/10

That was so nice! Lovely orchestration. My favourite was the Meeting Place.

Spaghetti Western, the album. Fun, energetic and different enough from what Arctic Monkeys were doing at the time, I can see how this would end up on this list. I enjoyed it, but not so much so that it's going to be in constant rotation. I will come back to it from time to time though

Prvi, "The Age of the Understatement" mi je znan, zdaj, ko ga poslušam. Nism pa the biggest fan tega Western ritma. "Separate and Ever Deadly" mi je kul? Fak, ne znam ocenit. Zveni k (at the time) slightly softer Arctic Monkeys. "The Chamber" je zanimiv. Ok, "Only the Truth" je kul. "My Mistakes Were Made for You" tud. Ok. Na splošno kr kul. Mi je tekoma prirasel k srcu.

moderne westernfilm-vibes! Standouts: The Age Of The Understatement (episk åbningsnummer), Calm Like You (Elsker især energien på 'Locked up inside of your loops'), My Mistakes Were Made For You (Bare cool vibes. Også lidt mere noir), The Meeting Place.

Sometimes it’s nice getting something you already know you like. ❤️

Might be controversial, but this is so much better than the artic monkies. I really like it. Its fun, short, punchy, catchy good 4

Good music for 60's and 70's spy movies. 4 stars or B-.

de alex turner het gern side projects glaub. aber er singt huuere cool und de sheffield akzent passt afoch. und ich bin eig vo afang hooked well sochli grossagleits arrangement country mässig i liiiike. calm like you rieeese intro. und riese groove es isch 6/8 time. es isch guet? obly the truth huere nice. weeeeirdi melodie.

Pretty good

I don't really have anything bad to say about this. It's fun, it's fast paced and it does what both artists do and takes it in new directions. I like the 60s influence mixed with the orchestration throughout.

FINALLY SOMETHING WORTH LISTENING TO

Be middle in the old and new. 4/5

3.5/5 Familiar with the lead vocalist from Arctic Monkeys, but had not heard of this "supergroup" before. The general theme of the album being love, with multiple songs that might as well be from movie soundtracks it really grabbed my attention. It kind of stuck to that premise throughout though, and didnt have much in the form of changeups or different styles.

Notable Textzeile "I'm sorry I met you, darling, I'm sorry I met you" As she turned into the night, all he had was the words "I'm sorry I met you, darling, I'm sorry I've left you" Ist (auch) an mir damals völlig vorbeigegangen.

Weniger rotzig.

loved loved loved

Very much enjoyed this, having only previously been familiar with Alex Turner's most recognised work as the frontman of Arctic Monkeys, and having never touched base with Miles Kane. This doesn't entirely lose the urban, gritty aesthetic that marked Arctic Monkeys's earlier material, instead channelling aspects of it into something of a galloping spaghetti western meets grandiose 60s baroque pop sound, in the vein of early Scott Walker and Ennio Morricone. Whilst it does lean heavily into its influences, the orchestral arrangements here elevate the songs into sweeping, dramatic soundtracks, whilst retaining a degree of wit and British cynicism that prevents them from becoming too over earnest. The tight running time of 35 minutes is a huge positive as well, with the album concluding just as you feel that the well could have begun to run dry. Definitely one I'd purchase.

This was cool. I like the epic / cinematic nature of it. It feels like a movie soundtrack or a rock opera. I think this one would grow on me. Its probably like Gorrillaz, where the longer you spend with it, the more into it you get. I've never really be a fan of Arctic Monkeys, but this is definitely more interesting to me. I like his vocals with this style of music.

la verdad es que muy muy top

Oh hell yeah, some 60s throwback pop by the Artic Monkeys guy. It's pretty damn good, the drumming is quite nice and the arrangements are chefs kiss

Generally I've been fairly passive on my reviews for brit pop/rock records, but this stands out. Orchestra, French movie theme, baroqueness, all things that might risk it being too pretentious. It almost becomes that, considering especially the lyrics thats not necessary as clever as Arctic Monkeys, but still there's something that makes this sounds like something that breaks to regular brit pop ground. Bold!

The Age Of The Understatement - 4.5/5 Standing Next To Me - 3/5 Calm Like You - 3.5/5 Separate And Ever Deadly - 4/5 The Chamber - 3.5/5 Only The Truth - 4/5 My Mistakes Were Made For You - 4/5 Black Plant - 4/5 I Don't Like You Anymore - 3.5/5 In My Room - 3/5 The Meeting Place - 3/5 Time Has Come Again - 3/5

Liked this rather a lot

I didn't know they did a side project. Thought this was cool

Indie with a 60s folk/psych twist. Arctic Monkeys meets Jefferson Airplane and I'm loving it. Oh, it actually is Alex Turner singing! Epic/cinematic in places, like a 60s Bond film. Best track - The Age of the Understatement, Calm Like You, Separate and Ever Deadly 4 stars

enjoyable

Good 3.5 for me

Supergroups always sound poshy and somehow repulsive. This supergroup contain members from bands that are not that familiar with me and so I don't carry any burden with me. The Age of the Understatement just hits some nice spot in me, might just have a suitable mood for this day and big arrangements tends to be my soft spot. Excellent album!

It feels like the Arctic Monkeys, but they added a lot more interesting instrumentation throughout. More horns, strings, and a lot of variety. It was a largely enjoyable album. As it went on it started to feel kind of samey and lost a lot of the cool musical elements, unfortunately.

I really liked this album. On the first listen I wondered if I just liked it because of the familiarity of Alex Turner's voice, and that might still be part of it, but I do just really enjoy the album. Felt very different from the Arctic Monkeys albums I know. I liked the orchestration and how atmospheric it felt - I can see why they talked about film soundtracks. Fav song: Separate and Ever Deadly Least fav: The Chamber

Enjoyed this album. Alex turner committed crimes against hair gel but he knows how to make a song I’ll give him that. I like the base level of most songs thought none are really jumping out and making it into the playlist. Specific rating - 4.2 Fav song - separate and ever deadly Least fav- time has come again

Alex Turner's got such a distinctive voice but this album still manages to feel very different from any Artic Monkeys' music I know. I think that side projects of famous band members can often be self indulgent and under edited and it's so nice to see it done so so well: this album feels like a work of art. Favourite song: Black Plant Least: I Don't Like You Anymore

Arctic Monkeys but as a James Bond soundtrack. It's pretty good though.

arctic monkeys if they were more quirky

Interesante

Listened to this and thought- "this sounds like Arctic monkeys!"... Looked up the vocalist and it's their vocalist. LMAO. nice stuff!

Pretty solid, I like a little super group.

I don't think I've ever had this short of an album, so it's kind of hard to rate it against everything else. but I thought it was AWESOME!!!

Vette stem

Nice as background music for work

This was really good. Lots of cool instrumentation, variety, and melodies. 4.0/5.0: Great

enjoyed this way more than i expected

A pretty good alt rock album. Feels like one that would benefit from a relisten.

feeling like a british cowboy rn

The musical equivalent of stealing your dad's car for a joyride. Pure, unadulterated fun. These guys decided "let's just play the hell out of our guitars and see what sticks". Playlist Additions: - The Age Of The Understatement - Standing Next To Me - Calm Like You - My Mistakes Were Made For You

Enjoyed this. Unusual and accessible all in one.

More new music that I discovered on this website. Don't really know what genre it is but it sounds good. Definitely going on the playlist

Heard of The last shadow puppets Never heard the album Had heard one or two singles. This has grown on me a lot over listens. I really like it, it's cinematic, Lush. Can see they made a second album, so will suss that out too. I don't think it's pushing any boundries though. Great album, not sure it's worthy of the list.

FAVO: Standing Next to me, My mistakes were made for you, Black Plant, The meeting place

Big fan of this indie and orchestrally dense sound.

I did not even know that Alex Turner had formed a supergroup back in 2008, much less did I know there was an entire well-received album by that supergroup. The Arctic Monkeys album "Tranquility Base and Hotel" came as a big shock to me when it came out, just because of the lounge-rock feel of the entire album. I had no idea where that sound had come from. Now I know. This is an album of baroque non-Arctic Monkeys rock with orchestral sounds that strongly hints at a direction Alex Turner would like to take his music at some point. This is a split of the Arctic Monkeys post-debut album evolved sound and their post-FM sound that was heard on "Tranquility..." I was still a bit confused on my initial listen, as I did not get it entirely. Of course, that happens to me a lot with Alex Turner's music. It tends to grow on me rather than immediately hit me with sounds that I like. Fun surprise for me to hear an album by artists I enjoy outside of their normal band. Music that I didn't know existed from artists I did know existed is always welcome. My favorite tracks: The Age of Understatement Standing Next to Me Calm Like You Only the Truth My Mistakes Were Made for You In My Room Time Has Come Again

This might be my most low-expectation/ high-reward listen so far. The symphonic elements really accentuated the songs well. I thought it sounded like the Arctic Monkeys and I just read in their bio that it is! I don't know how often I will return to this album, but I am very glad I listened to it- and isn't that the point?

uplne super milujem to. veľmi veľmi podobne ako artic monkeys lebo tu spiev ich hlavný spevák. obľúbená pesnička je urcite Standing next to me a Calm like you.

I really enjoyed this album - seeing Alex Turner in a non-Arctic Monkeys project was interesting. Some AM sounds are there, but this is its own thing. It sounded theatrical at times and some of the songs were disjointed from one another, but overall I really liked what I heard.

I loved this. I'm a sucker for anything influenced by the 60s sound, and this album was lush and cinematic with great production. The lyrics were witty and interesting, and I appreciated the vocal delivery.

Surprised how much I enjoyed listening to this. One minute I feel like I'm in an old western and the next I'm in some fae dreamscape. 3.5/5

I loved the dramatic sound of the album. At several moments it sounded like something that could have been made for a Bond movie. It’s self-aware of its bombast but not ashamed. It’s ironic how it sounds so elegant but thematically a little sleazy. A fun and compelling record.

Good album, solid rock tunes. Each track felt like they belonged on different movie soundtracks. Each track is a good bop. My Rating: 4/5

I love pretty much anything with Alex Turner so I was very excited for this album. It’s really good, and it sounds a lot like Arctic Monkeys. It’s more the later “lounge” style Arctic monkeys (mostly) but that’s ok. It just makes it a more chill listen. The lyrical style and phrasing is very familiar too. This album also introduced me to Miles Kane, whose album I also really enjoyed.

I mean Alex Turner, cmon.

Good album, although I’d say this is more like an EP since there’s only four tracks. All the songs are good. Haven’t heard of the band, but I’d check out more from them.

Ah it's the Arctic Monkeys singer I'm hearing. Never heard of this band and didn't know they were considered a supergroup. I dig it.

what a fun discovery! enjoyed this a lot

407/1089 - I like Alex Turner's voice and it's interesting to see him try out a different mellower style (before the new AM stuff).

A cracking little throwback—like stumbling into a forgotten 60s spy film, all sweeping strings and dramatic strutting about. Alex Turner’s lyrics are, predictably, miles ahead of what anyone has a right to manage, and the whole thing sounds massively cinematic in the best way. It does get a bit samey after a while, as if they found a winning formula and thought, “yeah, let’s just keep doing that.” Still, stylish, bold, and very good fun—just shy of a full five stars.

Nice album

was wondering why these songs sounded so similar to the arctic monkeys and then found out Alex turner is in both bands and that explained a lot. anyways I really enjoy this genre (7/10)

It sounds like the Arctic Monkeys writing music for a Connery Bond film. I might be overrating this, because I didn't love it, but I expect this to grow on me.

Høydepunktene er tilfeldigvis også singlene "Standing Next to Me" og "My Mistakes Were Made For You" (hallo, gutterom)

i had no idea arctic monkeys had a prequel

I consider myself an enjoyer of Arctic Monkeys, but I was surprised about this group existing. After the third song into the album, I said to myself "boy this sure does sound exactly like Arctic Monkeys." All around, this was a good album. Wouldn't expect anything less from Alex Turner.

Okkay, I didn't know the singer from Artic Monkeys had another band! I feel like I'm really gonna like this album! Nothing particular to say, I've rather enjoyed listening to this album!

fuck yeah tbh

This was a fun one! Despite Alex Turner's involvement, it doesn't feel like *just* an Arctic Monkeys spinoff, which I was very pleasantly surprised by. The orchestral arrangements really elevate the album, and the whole thing ends up having an old movie soundtrack feel. At a short and dynamic 30 minutes, I can see myself coming back to it for sure. Standouts: The Age Of The Understatement • Standing Next To Me • Separate And Ever Deadly • Only The Truth • Black Plant • I Don't Like You Anymore • The Meeting Place

This album has a vibe to it that I've never come across on another one before. I love the Enrico Morricone-style arrangements and this was rapidly cruising to a 5 for me but unfortunately it fell off on the back end. Super enjoyable.

Already know I enjoy this one. Not as good at AT at peak powers but love his songwriting with Miles.

Sounded like Artic Monkeys tribute band but still had its own flavour, I enjoyed it all but there wasn’t anything profound for me so can’t give it 5.

come on alex turner!

This is a really good listen. Alt rock goodness

So, this album started and I immediately thought how great the music was, but I couldn't stand the Arctic Monkeys style singing. Lo and behold, I find out that the singer is in fact the singer from Arctic Monkeys with the obnoxiously compressed vocals. That's the only down side for me. The rest is amazing, the "western style" music with surfy guitars makes this a very refreshing mid 2000s rock album. The songs themselves are also great. It's a 3.5/5 to 4/5 album for me, but it would've been a 5/5 with different vocals. A matter of personal preference, that's all.

As a big Arctic Monkeys fan I was very happy to get this album today. It’s one I’ve listened to before (and some singles more), but had slightly different if still very positive impressions listening now. I’d previously thought this was quite a departure from AM, a key example of Alex Turner’s famous (or infamous depending on your view) love of mid-century Italian film scores. Listening now I can hear much more similarities to Favourite Worst Nightmare and Humbug, the AM albums that sandwich the project. On songs like the title track, Standing Next to Me, and My Mistakes Were Made for You, the blend of strings and indie comes off really well. My only criticisms would be, for the album, that there are some weaker songs in the latter half, and for the list, why this ahead of another AM album?

Really enjoy this band and album. Singer from Arctic Monkeys!

Fantastic first song, much in the vein of Muse's Knights of Cydonia; the rest of the album is decent too. I have revisited this one occasionally over the years.

Arctic Monkeys before artic monkeys

The sound on this album is great, I love the 60's guitar tone plus the orchestra. Wish there was a bit more variety with the song structure, but overall a really solid album.

Yay! Another new band and album for me! I like how this website is breaking down my listening patterns and either introducing me to new music (this is the second out of about twenty) or making me rethink my opinions of bands I grew up with. The first song on this album feels 60's inspired--there's some surfer guitar, and 60s spy movie sound that are really cool. This and yesterday's album are proving to me I need to revisit the late aughts for Indie music. This band and Grizzly Bear have both been a feast for the ears, and are dramatically different from each other. The lead vocalist for this band is dramatic and magnetic, there's a driving backbeat and an urgency to many of these songs.

Arctic monkeys esc yet very good, but overall 8/10

Hey this reminds me a lot of the Arctic Monkeys, a band I like a lot Oh! 4/5

Alex Turner, I’d recognize your voice anywhere for some reason

7/10… indie / baroque pop / *2008

Short but very sweet

When you have trouble choosing between the James Bond soundtrack and that old Killers album. I like what they are doing here. “Calm Like You” was my favorite on first listen.

The soundtrack of a movie from the 60s that didn't get made. There are elements of this album that are fun, familiar, and forgettable. I enjoyed the entire album, but I think it was because it reminded me of an old Bond movie... something you would see on a rainy Saturday afternoon and thoroughly enjoy... while hoping that the weather breaks next week and you'll be able to do something better. But you have fond memories, and if the movie came on again in similar circumstances, you'd settle right in for a nostalgic viewing.

Wow, this is a cracker of an album. I didn't know who these people were or what this music was about but I am in. Only 4 but after a 3rd and 4th listen I could elevate.

I live for Alex Turner's voice, its amazing. Its like watching Artic Monkeys getting created.

amazing album

It’s a pretty good album

Enjoyed this, would listen again

34/1089 3.8771* This is a very enjoyable album. Nice 2010s rock vibe. I listened to it twice and when it was done my player went into MGMT, Cage, Strokes, Arctic Monkey (obviously) and similar artists. This was right up my alley and a welcome change from the past three albums generated for me. Hits...the ages of understatement, calm like you, my mistakes.

Arctic Monkeys meet The Monkees! What’s not to like?

🧑🏼‍🎄

4/5 alex turner did good things w this

I really enjoyed this. It could almost be a perfect album if not for one fact. The singing, as is true of many modern recordings, lacks dynamics. I get tired of listening to that voice even though the arrangements are so interesting.

I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this...and that's a good thing. The title track, "The Age of the Understatement", reminded me a lot of early Yes - not as proggy, but laden with baroque lyrics and orchestral arrangements. The next track felt like the B-side of a '60s James Bond theme; in fact, the whole thing feels very classically cinematic. I could hear any one of these songs showing up in a Tarantino film. The songs are short, punchy, and have a ton of character - which I don't hear as often as I'd like these days. Great symphonic parts drench the whole album in atmosphere. I think this might be the first of the 1001 albums (those I don't already own at least) that I actually buy.

So - so. Same nice small songs. Some very noisy

I was not surprised to find this album included on the 1,001 list, what with the Oasis haircuts, the Arctic Monkey sounds, and the pretty clear Scott Walker influences. The only surprising thing here was how much I actually LIKED this one. Turner and Kane neatly walk the tightrope here between paying homage to the sounds of the past and adding their own fresh touch of the present (albeit a "present" that is now itself almost two decades in the past!). It probably helps that, musically, I was a 70s kid, not quite an old enough fart to remember with complete veneration the sounds from the 60s they are echoing here. By the time of my seminal musical influences, the kinds of songs they're hearkening back to here were simply examples of a certain very hip sub-genre from a decade or so earlier that had been largely drowned out in the wave of musical experimentation that was the late-1960s and early 1970s. Early Killers albums pay this era respect in ways that are slightly more inventive and effective for my tastes. There's nothing quite as good here as "Somebody Told Me," Mr. Brightside," or "All These Things That I've Done." But overall, this album probably holds up pretty well to a comparison to Hot Fuss. It's a fun listen.

Late 2000s Supergroup with a solid debut with strings, vocals and that British spirit.

Cracker

dresses like beatles, grooves like arctic monkeys

This must've totally missed the US, I had never even heard of this project. Yes, it does sound like Arctic Monkeys, but I'm into it. These are good songs with a couple of strong highlights like the opener, Calm Place, and the Meeting Place. This was pretty good, I might be a sleeper Alex Turner fan 10 years too late. 4/5 but idk if this is a must hear album before you die, still happy to have been exposed to it now

One of the rare times I’ve heard an album from a band I didn’t know, and wanted to go listen to more of them

60s, Scot walker, orchestral great stuff

Pleasantly surprised to see this come up, the only album I’ve heard before so far. Simultaneously a cinematic mood piece and a shot in the arm of energy at a tight 35 minutes. Cleverly done think this still stands up. Nice to be reminded of how good this is.

Continuation of great form from the Arctic Monkeys leading man.

Great album. I really love the 60’s sound on this.

This album would be life-changing if I were 15 years old -- I am no longer 15. The lyrics are sophomoric, and the music self-indulgent. But isn't that what makes this music so great?

I really liked it!! I was surprised but like tbh this side of Alex turner I might prefer to arctic minkeys.

Very very solid. Arctic Monkeys were never a favorite of mine, not sure why. I should get into them more. Best Song: My Mistakes Were Made for You Rating: 7/10 Stars: 4

No idea who this or what to expect. The opening track is making me think of the “Ocean’s 11” soundtrack. The remake that is. Such a retro sound and still modern. I’m so here for this album. Sounds like 60s pop and modern music simultaneously. I love this.

Love that baroque 1960's vibe, but with an indie 2000's twist.

I was unfamiliar with this group, but it was pretty good! Nice early 2000s indie, good music, good voices.

Really fun album that while good, lacked greatness. Felt like watered-down Arctic Monkeys (unsurpsisingly), and left me just wanting a punchier sound. Definitely worth a listen, but doesn't surpass the work outside of this supergroup. Top tracks: Standing Next To Me, Calm Like You, My Mistakes Were Made For You

This seemed like a long lost hidden gem from a somewhat psychedelic album from the 60’s. A nice variety of styles and instrumentation. I quite enjoyed it.

Interesting "supergroup". Completely missed the fact that they existed, they never got any mainstream airplay. Strange to hear Turner's voice in anything other than Arctic Monkeys, but it works. Aping a bit of Muse here. Very listenable album, full of neat twists and turns.

3.5 - Good

this album surprised me, just reminded me of prime arctic monkeys but less heavy and more mellow, great album though

Sounds out of its time which is probably what they wanted

This was a nice ride. Got that classic Alex Turner sound with a nice twist here and there

Wow!! I loved this album. This is the first time in a while I’ve been introduced to something new on here that really impressed me. And, what’s more, some of the songs reminded me of the theme song to Underdog. And who doesn’t like the theme song to Underdog. Really loved this one. I think I’ll listen again. I’m giving it a 4, but maybe it could be a 5 with a couple more listens.

really enjoyed this album. I had no expectations and was really pleasantly surprised.

I only have terrible memories of 2008. I literally lost interest in everything, so the year completely passed me by. So did this, and what a shame... This is well good. I really enjoyed some of the songs on here. Separate and Ever Deadly, The Chamber then In My Room later on all pricked my ears. Great 60s quality with added cleanness. Interesting listen. Not quite a 5, because some tracks didn't grab me as hard as others, but definitely a strong 4.

I enjoy the Arctic Monkeys but had never heard of this project before. It was surprisingly delightful. Loved the vibe especially the mellow vibe of the last couple of songs.

I can't say this with 100% certainty that this is better than any Arctic Monkeys album because I haven't heard any of their albums in full, but I CAN say that on average I like this band more than Arctic Monkeys, and by a lot. This was a cool album.

The age of the understatement - vibey, makes me feel like im in a sallon with a live band dancing with a strange 4/5 Standing next to me - makes me wanna dance, a little bit too repetitive for my taste 3,5/5 Calm like you - love this sooooo much 4/5 (2nd fav) Seperate and ever deadly - something was off cant tell what, but overall solid 3/5 The Chamber - i love the more calm vibe, want to sway in my room to this, especially the echos felt really interesting, but the outro was to long imo and didnt feel necessary 4/5 (fav) Only the truth - back in the saloon, but this time i stand on a table declaring my stand while raising my glass 3,5/5 My mistakes were made for you - liked the change of key, wasnt a fan at the start but it grew on my as the song progressed 3/5 Black Plant - why would you say sorry????, okay but i did actually like this 3/5 I dont like you anymore - so i liked the begining but wasnt a fan of the first change to the more energetic part, but the energy kinda grew on my ig 2,5/5 In my room - the build ups were reallyyyy cool, 3,5/5 The meeting place - a bit boring in comparison to the rest 2,5/5 (least fav) Time has come again - this made me weirdly very sad, but i did like it alot 4/5 coherence: 4/5 overall impression (x2) : 4/5 (x2) I overall really liked the use of instruments, his voice and diversity in sounds all while maintaining a certain way of coherence ---> 3,5/5

Solid album!

Not a bad album. I kept getting distracted and losing where I was in the album, but I didn't have a problem picking up at any point and repeating songs. 4/5

Besonders stark: „Standing Next to Me“ und der Titeltrack. Etwas zu sehr Hommage, aber stilvoll und mutig. Ein klangvolles Abenteuer abseits des Mainstreams.

It's like early Arctic Monkeys meets 60s movie soundtracks, lots of Morricone vibes, Mariachi beats, and boosted by the Orchestral arrangements. No song stood out too much on first listen but the sound and vibes from this record was great.

Kinda dig this one. I'm a sucker for symphonic rock sometimes and they definitely lean into the vibes of a spaghetti-western orchestration. Favorite tracks: The Age of the Understatement, I Don't Like You Anymore

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into with this one, but what a pleasant surprise! Turns out I really dig the 60s sound that this album weaves throughout—not surprised to find that the Arctic Monkeys played a part of this one! I’m definitely going to have to give this a relisten too.

Totally new to me, but I really dug Arctic Monkeys first album and the lead singers voice. Album starts really strong, and the first track "the age of the understatement" is my favourite. Its like arctic monkeys meets a cinematic orchestra. Pretty upbeat, good guitar work and overall consistently good songs.

I was surprised by this album first by its release date (I would have sworn it was from the 60s), and then by how much I liked it. I’ll definitely listen again.

Pretty good find, and good story. I like the references back to the postpunk era that I like a lot.

like if the white stripes were better and frank ferdinand were worse

Another surprise.

As a spinoff to the Arctic Monkeys, rather than continuing the indie rock style they’ve been known for, The Last Shadow Puppets instead takes inspiration from Rock in the 60’s and 70’s. This project was formed after band mates Alex Turner and Miles Kane both talked about their love for Bowie’s Soul Love after all, and in some ways, this album feels like a love letter to this era in time. Going into this album, I was already familiar with two of the songs on here: My Mistakes Were Made for You and the Meeting Place. Finishing up my album listen, I still think these two are by far the best on the record, but all the other songs feel really replayable, to the point where on my 3rd listen, I was singing to some of these while running. Still, sometimes the lyrics for some of these songs can feel like a cheap imitation of the pop-rock influences they drew from, and if you’re not willing to play along with the album knowing this, it may sour the experience. This album is by no means revolutionary to the industry compared to some of the albums I’ve been listening to up to this point, but it’s a fun album with a good portion of catchy and replayable songs, and that’s what music should be all about.

This one was a surprise. Indie rock with big band/orchestral elements to fill in the sound profile. I really enjoyed a lot of this album, and it seemed to consistently evoke memories of other songs I hadn't heard in a while.
