Reviews (page 12 of 14)
I liked Under The Bridge but it's a long slog to get to it and a long slog left after it has finished..
I know this is considered one of their essential albums, but it's honestly probably my least favorite of theirs
As sleazy as Aerosmith but with none of the fun. Under the Bridge is a great song. The rest are hard to listen to, knowing that the lead singer likes underage girls.
Niet mijn vibe, iets te mannelijk
ok in small doses. 2
I’m not a fan of the Chili Peppers in general to start and I found this album underwhelming.
red hot chili peppers
This album's fine, but not much more. It's also far too long for something as mediocre as it is. If the first half were dropped, I think this could be 3, maybe 4 stars.
4/10 A load of relentless Meh, punctuated by the awesome Under the Bridge. Rest of it is too long and boring
Me in 1991: "Can't wait for the RHCP show!" Me in 2025: "JFC this album won't end." These guys have been at it a million years and are good at what they do (well, Kiedis is debatable), but what they do grates on my nerves. "Give It Away" doesn't bother me as much as the rest, so that's something, I guess.
Five stars for Flea, John Frusciante, and Chad Smith. Unfortunately, when you mix manure and ice cream, it doesn't really affect the manure but it does affect the ice cream. On the not so bright side, not sure why this was 2.5 times as long as classic Van Halen album.
I find them boring and repetitive
I’m kinda done w it sorry I gotta catch up not for me
This album is kind of whiplashy, the funk rock then the non-funk rock. A few take aways: Mike Patton > Anthony Keidis Hearing him sing these funky songs is like listening to Bradley Nowell doing patois. He should stick to the slow bangers. But always “magik” was spelt correctly Feel bad for Flea, slaps and then take the back seat. Shows the musical range of John Frusciante.
No. Look, Frusciante and Flea sure know their stuff but Kiedis' rapping quickly turns this thing into a real slog to get through. It's not even on every song but if I have to sit through even half of it on a 73 minute album, it's too much. I like Breaking the Girl and some of jamming, that's about it.
Honestly, not my kind of music. It was definitely funky, and 'Under the Bridge' was my favourite, but it was my favourite of a bad bunch... I probably won't even listen to that again! This album has been my first major flop during my journey of 1001 albums! :(
Apart from the well known songs nothing to commend this and I’m not even sure about those
Remember loving this one when I was a kid, thank god I grew out of it. Anthony Kiedis, in addition to being a creepy, douchey pedophile by his own admission, is just really fuckin annoying. He pretty much ruins the very good instrumentals with his shitty lyrics ("cock my brain to shoot my load") and aggravating vocal style on a ton of these songs. Suck my Kiss sucks, and is even grosser with the knowledge that he's a sex pest. A Greatest hits RHCP would be an ok listen, and I remember liking Californication more, but they basically parody themselves on so much of this, and it's way too long, didnt know if it would ever end
Flea gets the stars. Otherwise, it is a shit bucket.
Mega-talented but ultimately unrealized, the Chili Peppers are all over the place but posses very little range. I'd normally enjoy an effective amalgam of genres, in this case funk, hip-hop, punk, and grunge, but this doesn't blend as much as it fails to make up its mind. That's probably why it's so long: at 73 minutes, Blood Sugar Sex Magik either meanders or lingers on the cheesiest aspect of a particular genre. Here's corny hip-hop lyricism: 'My lily-white ass is tickled pink / When I listen to the music that makes me think.' And here's tacky rock lyricism: 'My face will never show / What is not real.' It's tediously disappointing b/c there's a whole lotta talent behind the schmaltz and stupidity. +, Mos Def's 'Brooklyn' > 'Under the Bridge.'
5/10 Highlights: Under the Bridge Give it Away
Good god, indeed. Hvordan var dette noen gang populært? Sutrete, treg klimprerock med blikkboks-lyd. Eneste pluss: Under the bridge er fortsatt en veldig god låt.
Not my favorite band, but definitely a recognizable sound
Some great songs amongst a lot of meh
Not only did you make me listen to RHCP, you made me listen to 70+ minutes of RHCP…
As an Australian bass player I feel I should like this. And yes, bass playing is great. But songs are shite, Keidas super annoying and RHCP over exposed. I can't handle more than 9 minutes of this. Nick Cave was right.
Favorites: Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Under the Bridge I always learn something new about myself when I do big review projects like these, and this time around I've learned that I do not like Red Hot Chili Peppers. At all. Too bloated for me.
2/5 only one good song others are meh
Holy shit I struggled to get through this album. I have a love hate relationship with the Peppers, they have some truly great songs but the rest of their catalog I just don't enjoy. When I was younger I vibed a lot more with that chaotic off the wall rap/rock style, but the older I get the more it hate it. It has a crack-head energy that just feels like drivel. If this album didn't have Under the Bridge on it (great song, overplayed though) it would get 1 star from me. Also, this album is wayyyy too long. I listened to it driving through rural boring Idaho on my way to Bozeman and it made that 1.25 hrs of the drive feel like 2. Standouts: Under the Bridge, Suck my Kiss (I hate it but also kinda love it?) Rating: 1.8/5
2.5
Don't like the funk, don't like the rapping. Still, I do like a few songs. 2 stars
Good until the vocals begin...
Why the FUCK is this album almost 80 minutes long. I've never really much cared for RHCP aside from admiring Flea's talent but this gets really grating really fast. There are some good grooves here and there and Under the Bridge is a classic but overall: No thanks.
Can't really get on board with this. 1 star for Under the Bridge but that's about it
red hot silly peppers. reddit hot shitty peppers. Flea plays a mean bass lick, John Frusciante is a great guitarist, and Anthony Kiedis delivers some of the worst lyrics in any album this significant with a very obnoxious delivery. deserves to be one of the 1001? (begrudgingly) yea sure i guess. i hope i don't get Californication anytime soon
Ok, nothing special.
mah
typical chili peppers album imo. i think i like californixqtion better
Dated.
There’s a good album in here somewhere but this was so long. Really liked the crispness of the drumming. The songs I knew were great, but Sir Psycho Sexy feels like a joke song.
Good album for the time. But it doesn’t transcend for me…stuck in an era.
I had some nostalgia for the singles. Overall, i just didn't connect to this album.
I like Give It Away and Under the Bridge. But beyond that, this album didn't impress me. Another 90's album that far overstays it's welcome. 2 stars.
Okay so I almost completed the assignment. Put on the RHCP album. As someone who's only familiar with their radio songs, some of it was surprisingly funky and antiracist. That said, I eventually had to turn it off and put on some Brian Eno to cleanse my ears.
listen i love some catchy tunes but for like the HISTORY of music… i dont know…
fantastic instrumentation dragged down by tedious vocals and juvenile lyrics. flea and chad smith were locked in and laid down a funky rhythm section. john frusciante came in and overlaid some absurd guitar parts; then here comes anthony kiedis to ruin it all. the vocal delivery ranges from tuneless talk singing to half hearted crooning. the discrepancy between the amount of talent possessed and effort put in by ak vs the rest of the band is absolutely mind boggling and i can't for the life of me understand why they've put up with him as the frontman for so long. without ak this would be 5 easily, with him its hard to justify more than a 3. the fact that its 74 minutes of him pulls it down to a 2 for me
solid singles hated everything else
Other than breaking the girl and under the bridge - I hated this album.
i feel like i gotta confess something: i don't hate the Red Hot Chili Peppers. i know, i know, they're basically Zoomer Styx and if you profess a little affinity for them your qualifications as a critic and tastemaker are essentially null, ant beneath boot, your opinions worthy of transformation into palimpsest. they're fucking stupid; however, hear me out -- that's the point. stupid wacky bullshit lyrics with occasional shallow social commentary and emotional navel gazing does have its place. i don't think they deserve to be tossed aside as a band just for lacking in emotional maturity and the general staleness of their white funk deep cuts. you can allot yourself some affection for boomer ass "REEL RAWK" guitar and/or bass solos. it's okay. you're estranged from your shitty dad; he won't know you like the same music as him. get him out of your head. but it didn't have to be 74 minutes. you could have ended the album after "Under the Bridge". finish on a high note. could have been a solid B- album if they'd just cut it off after that song. instead, the band and Rick Rubin decide to just let the record's finish line downhill after its arduous journey upwards. i am exhausted, please let me go, guys. please. eight minute jam? creamy beaver, hotter than a fever? fuck you. let me go. i wanna watch the new Louis Theroux special on West Bank settlers before it gets deleted from YouTube. please. (sidenote: every time i hear the intro to "Under the Bridge", i expect it to give way to Santeria. does anyone else?)
I have always disliked the Peppers. And now I can't unhear the fact that Anthony Kiedis' "rapping" sounds like Keenan Thompson playing his character on SNL. I know the 1990s were a different time, but this shit is cringe as hell. Yuck.
This gets two stars because I like Under the Bridge. It's much too long and too annoying. If it were annoying at a shorter length it might even end up kind of fun, but we do not live in that timeline.
i kind of liked this record back then, but now revisiting after some years it sounds very corny. didnt age well for me personally.
It boggles my mind the chain of events that made them as big and long lasting as they have been. I was on track 6 and thought oh this must be over soon. This should be 10 tracks long max. Very talented musicians, that could be doing something else. This guy is gross. It's a well constructed album, tho too long. I understand why it's on the list. I don't like it.
Some of the songs are nice, the others not as much. It was really hard listening to the full album
Not rlly comparable to By the Way or Californication imo this one’s very samey throughout
Potentially heretical to say but…other than a few hit tracks wasn’t wowed eek but maybe my bad for passive listening but didn’t leave huge impression
As a card carrying RHCP hater, I have been dreading this one since I started. I did enjoy it more than I expected, by which I mean I made it through the whole album, but I still never want to hear it again. Honestly, it's just the rap singing and lyrical content/songwriting that sinks it for me. The bass, guitar, and drumming are all are pretty great, I was just sick of listening to Kiedis by the time Suck my Kiss came on and was ready to turn it off by the time Give it Away came on. Wow, I thought Give it Away was bad, but Sir Psycho Sexy is making me physically cringe. Why is this album so long?
There's no reason for this to be so long. It was heading for a three star rating, but eight minutes of Sir Psycho Sexy is taking that down to a two.
Not for me. Blending funk and alt rock is fun, but I’ve heard a lot of much better versions.
Not my thing but I did enjoy the song "I Could Have Lied."
Not something id usually listen to.
2.5
Just not for me. The singer kind of ruins each song. I'm too old for this shit
I'm generally quite fond of RHCP, but I'm not gonna lie, this album just doesn't do it for me overall. I think it's one of the albums is trying way too hard to be 'of its time'. There are a few highlights, such as Under the Bridge, they simply do not make up for the repetitiveness of the sound. By the second half, I was kinda waiting for it to be over. Suffice it to say, I will continue listening to my favourites off of this album but I don't think I'll give the whole another go.
Don’t really like RHCP
This was going to be a 1, but I quite like Under The Bridge.
A few good songs.
Very difficult to find enjoyment in this album past a couple of songs. Don't get it. Almost want to give it a 1 because of how much I despised listening to it
I actually do kind of like some RHCP songs (albeit, in a guilty pleasure sort of way), so I was surprised how little tolerance I had for this album. Too long, obnoxious lyrics, and with none of the songs I may feel more charitable toward.
Chad Smith is amazing. Flea is decent. They get two stars. Frusciante is technically accomplished. But he's one of the legion of guitar players who lack any musicality. He ends up sounding lost most of the time; like his brain - fingers and not his ears - heart are driving his contributions. Kiedis sounds developmentally disabled; regardless of whether he's singing, shouting, or doing that cringe-inducing rap thing. Lyrically, he's like a 13 year old trying to convince someone he's a man. And together it's so disjointed - just a total mess to these ears.
meh
Nope. Can’t do it.
Piss og dritt. Men Under the Bridge er jævlig kul så plata karrer seg til en farlig svak 2'er
Been there, done that. Did not like it first time around. Ill give it a listen
The hits are great, but the rest is unremarkable. Just can’t get with the funk rap.
A few catchy songs, but the album as a whole doesn’t hold up, too juvenile. I’ve outgrown much of what I listened to as a teenager including this.
Considering my low expectations for this album it actually wasn't that terrible. I wasn't expecting the funkiness? Too bad the lyrics just sound borderline cringy to me ("your mouth was made to suck my kiss" ??) and I could have done without the awful rapping. But if you're able to ignore that the instrumentals are actually quite good.
No
2 stars
I like the polished chili peppers better. I know it’s not as punk to like the polished ones but I do.
Apart from Apache Rose Peacock, which is a lot of fun in a porno soundtrack sort of way, I hate this record so much. This is actually very similar to Aerosmith aesthetically, just for a younger crowd. Really difficult to sit through. Crazy how incredible of a year 1991 was for alternative music and this shit makes its way into the list.
Blood, sugar, sex, magic? Where did the Red Hot Chili Peppers find my shopping list! Bad jokes aside, I still don’t really like this band. There’s some moments of cool instrumentation and every now and then I’ll slip into a bit of a groove, but overall they just kind of bother me. It’s like teenage boy vibes somehow, plus all the songs start to sound the same.
I didn't like the last red hot chilli peppers album, and I thought maybe it was just not my album. Now I realise - it's just not my band. A shame because they have some great hits.
one red hot chili peppers song can be a jam, but an album is exhausting
like, ok...
Not my cup of tea.
it's easy to dunk on RHCP, but the truth is I think there's a lot of elements to how they function as a band could result in some great songs. when John Frusciante, Flea and Chad Smith hit a successful pocket, I damn near start head-bobbing. but, in a band, you're only as good as your weakest member; RHCP's is, unfortunately, frontman Anthony Kiedis. Kiedis is the butt of the wide majority of jokes made at the expense of this band. a lot of it comes down to his lyricism, which flip-flops between free-associative rambling, gibberish, and sexual innuendo. again, this isn't a problem in a vacuum; a band like the Melvins, (existent for about as long as the Chili Peppers) gets a lot of mileage out of lyrics that are pretty meaningless. that might sound like a strange comparison, but I think they've got at least one thing in common: their lyrics communicate a focus on the music being played, rather than the message being communicated by the words being said over that music. that would be all well and good, and this would be a pretty great funk rock album... but Kiedis kills the vibe whenever he touches the mic! his rapping just sounds silly, and his singing is pretty out-of-tune even at the best of times. songs like "Suck My Kiss" and "The Power of Equality" aren't too rough, but even then, they're heavily carried by the work of the three instrumentalists backing Kiedis up. I'm also not sure the inclusion of the ballad tracks like "Breaking the Girl" or "Under the Bridge" is doing the flow of this 17-track, 75-minute album any justice. I mean, those are two of this band's most successful songs, so what do I know? the more they lean into funk rock jamming, the more tolerable the material gets, with the exception of the excruciating 8-minute closer, "Sir Psycho Sexy". light 4/10.
Unfortunately the good songs are the ones I have heard before and the songs I have not heard are not good. Alas.
While I enjoy a few of the RHCP songs, they have never been a band I seek out to listen to or give me any pause when their song comes on. My fav song on this album is breaking the girl. Some songs are skips, and others are listen (give it away, under the bridge).
I don't like rappy-funky rock songs, but it gave me an american vibe what i liked. I hate the cover.
weirdly horny in a gross way
This fell into the category of albums that didn't hold up. I enjoyed this album as a young teen but probably haven't listened to it since 1999 and it's not nearly as good as I remembered.
Lite tråkig stil...
I saw this album pop up and was excited. Haven’t really listened to RHCP other than big hits you hear everywhere and thought I would be really into it. I wasn’t. It just all kinda sounds the same and is a lot of noise. Very disappointed.
Hated this album. Only good song is Under the Bridge. Confirmed, not a fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers. I can see why other people might like it though.
fine
Yeah
I have nothing anymore with the RHCP. This is absolutely dull and way too long.
FAVO: Give it away en Under the bridge. Had ik je ook van tevoren kunnen vertellen. Oh en they're Red Hot, gewoon omdat het een belachelijk nummer is, gelukkig is ie kort!
Pretty dreadful fucking vocals propped up by some talented performers on instruments. Was considering giving this a 3 for how they balance out but it started really getting on my nerves with how long this album was
Vaguely Predatory rock
RHCP is an interesting vehicle. Each of the band members are pretty talented, Flea is a good bassist, Frusciante is a competent guitarist. Unfortunately this is art in capitalism so talent is not the reason that these guys were able to achieve huge success. Anthony Kiedis' father is a failed actor and a failed father. At age 12, Anthony Kiedis moved to Hollywood because his father wanted to be an actor. Giving up after only 2 years, his father turned to dealing heroin to actors and ruined his son's life. The silver lining here is that Anthony Kiedis would have plenty of connections later in life to make his band really popular even though it sounds like shit!!!! The fact that this is one of the best selling bands of all time, along with the Police, proves that capitalism is a disgusting system that needs to be ripped down by violent revolution. Overly-long, dogshit album full of nonsensical lyrics with 2 "good" singles out of the FIVE on this album. This shit is ass. Frusciante left the band after the release of this album/subsequent tour and the reason cited is he was uncomfortable with the group's success which is probably a euphemism for he was sick of seeing Anthony Kiedis have sex with children. I envision that the storming of Warner Bros. records HQ will be as beautiful as when the workers sacked the Winter Palace in the October Revolution. 2/5 Highlights: Under the Bridge
This album reminded me why I don't like red hot chilli peppers. Some songs were good, and memorable hits, but for the most part I was waiting for it to end
If you asked me when I was a teenager, I probably would have said I was an RHCP fan. Hell, I owned one of their shirts! That said, I never felt super passionate about them, despite wearing the fuck out of Californication, and have not listened to them with any regularity for at least 15 years now. There seem to be two very strong camps concerning the Chili Peppers ("this is one of the worst bands to ever exist" and "y'all are dramatic af, their best stuff is awesome"), and I can honestly fall into either one of them depending on the song. As it pertains to Blood Sugar Sex Magik, I think "Breaking the Girl", "I Could Have Lied", and "Under the Bridge" are pretty fucking great. Everything else? Well...not all of it falls into "worst band ever" territory. I can't say I love "Give It Away" ("Bedrock Anthem" is lightyears better), but I don't hate it, and there are at least a few other tracks I feel relatively indifferent about. But holy shit, any interest that I might have once had in their stilted "funk" numbers has almost completely dissipated, as has my patience for Kiedis' rapping. I acknowledge and respect his distinctness, and I do think it works in moderation, but on this album in particular, he wears out his welcome with me pretty quickly. The terrible lyricism doesn't help; I love and appreciate a good nonsensical lyric when it's done right, and hell, I think there are songs on both this album and Californication where he gets away with it pretty well. For the lack of a better word, though, quite a few of these songs just sound stupid, and not in a very fun or interesting way for me. 2.5/5
Ugh! I wanted to like this album and all but one song was hard to listen to.
Too long. Too much mids RHCP.
I still don't know what to think about these guys. I SHOULD like them, they're alt rock with a mix of funk and a bit of jazz, which sounds like a cool fusion. But they're mostly just too noisy. It doesn't help that, lyrically, they are usually pretty bad. This album did not change my opinion of them. It's got one song that I really like (the one you expect, given my taste, the slow-building single with great composition, good mixing, and believable, emotional lyrics), a few that seem close to good, but rub me the wrong way, and a LOT that are just unpleasant to listen to, despite having bits and pieces that are pretty great on their own. I could give this anywhere between a one and a three depending on how much I'm giving promise vs. delivery, but I've heard enough of this band to know that they never really deliver on that promise. Maybe hey finally got there with Stadium Arcadium (I haven't heard that yet, but at least I don't hate Snow), but I'm fine with the two songs I bought back in the iPod era. Let me know if they ever come close to Under the Bridge or Otherside.
Complicated stuff coming up. On one hand, I think I’ll hate this, and on the other hand, I somehow think it’ll be better than I thought. A TON of radio tracks on the everytown alt rock station, so we’ll see how they hold up when not coming from the beleaguered speakers of my ‘08 Caravan. Sweet Jesus I hate the “hey batter batter” thing already. This band evokes a strong degree of second hand embarrassment. Cringe if you will. Regular readers of my reviews (nobody) can relate no doubt. This is the worst group of people in your city that have decided to form a band. But. This hook IS pretty good. Pretty cool funk rock. It really sounds like he’s saying the power of INequality. Which is much funnier. Anyway. Decent start. “If you have to ask” is a pretty fun “jam-funk” song. Did I just coin the whitest genre name ever? Probably. It’s fun, but wanky as it goes forever. SHEEEEEEE WAS A GIRRRRRLLL. His vocals were always going to be the obstacle here. That tonal quality is lacking in quality. Might turn on my keyboard clacks to drown this one out. Departure from funk in favour of 60’s folk hoots underneath the caterwauling of the human embodiment of chlamydia. Massive lowlight. Funky Monks sounds like the theme song for a Mike Judge cartoon that never made air sung as a military call and response march. Do with that what you will. Good outro at least. Ohhh buddy. We’re getting a big hit. Anything beats these lyrics to be fair. BUT the main riff is seriously great and the bass is earth rattling. Flea’s Fracking Concern™️ Good god. Love this song. The ballad. Man. It sounds almost exactly like “Picnic of Love,” by insane Noise/Grindcore outfit AxCx. Writing reviews is dumb. Well the slinky song stinks. Too many sex lyrics. From a gross group o’ fellas. Ah Jesus I don’t like the War and Peace one either. In the wise re-writing of The Simpsons “See what I’d like, is I’d like to hug and kiss ya.” Get Krusty in here. I’m sure you could get AI to do that. We truly live in hell. Although if I was the same age in 1991 as I am now, maybe seeing 4-5 20 something drug addicts from California be given this musical platform wouldve given me the same view of Dystopia. This song is fine, although the goofy “boinging” noise is pretty repulsive. Oh boy. The title track. I like how the cover includes the words as combined entities. Chili Sex being the highlight of these combos. Anyway. It’s worth mentioning that this cover looks like what would happen if you imagined and combined each of the elements of a deadbeat dad in 2005. Right down to the haircuts. Goofy comparisons aside, this song is not too shabby. Speaking of deadbeat dads. I feel like this has blasted through more than one 2000 Pontiac Sunfire en route to a divorce hearing. 1.5 billion plays. I’ve never been, but I hate the concept of the west coast. The heat, the people, the apparent lack of rules and structure. It sounds like a hellscape. A song that is this popular and essentially a platform for the least talented member of this band to wax poetic about Los Angeles is not for me. It would be MUCH cooler if it were about trolls asking riddles. The bass solo pal. Hell yeah. As hard as Flea is to look at and imagine as a person to actually speak to, buddy can play a bass. This song sucks. More gratuitous yet nonsensical sex lyrics. Reads like it was written by a kid who was held back a couple grades bragging to his much younger classmates about an intimate encounter that never occurred. The riff is almost suicidal tendencies, but as usual, the vocals are giving me suicidal thoughts. Boring. Funk again, but nothing of any distinctive flavour. Hooo until that bass break.damn. Flea really is the glue here. An 8 minute song about an insane Bootsy Collins soundalike called “Sir Psycho Sexy??????” With a god damn E40 bass line?? I’m listening. The lyrics are atrocious BUT with this dumb character, it almost works. This leans more into the unintentional cringe that occurs throughout this thing. Am I inventing scenarios to make this song palatable? Possibly. Either way. I laughed, it’s funky. A good bad song. I don’t know if they’re red hot, but I can say this was a fun outro. I didn’t know what to expect coming into this and I leave just as confused. The output from Flea, the Will Ferrell drummer fella, the bad, drugged up poet and of course, the other guy; was in part funk hero worship, and in many other parts, juvenile diary entry. What those two things equal? I still don’t really know. I had a good time, I had a bad time, and when it’s all said and done, the Red Hot chilli peppers produce music that makes an inconsistent impact. Half of the listening plane is covered with smoking craters, opened up by funk artillery, and the other half is littered with wadded up sheets of paper from Anthony Keidis’ sex therapist’s notepad. 2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: The Power of Equality, Suck my Kiss, Blood Sugar Sex Magick, The Greeting Song (sans vocals), Sir Psycho Sexy
This would have been 5* when I was 15. It just doesn't have it for me anymore.
Ew
I have heard a huge array of differing opinions surrounding this band: some saying it’s their favourite to others despising. I myself don’t think i’ve ever listened to more than one song at a time- and I have to admit I did not like. Both the lyrics and way of singing are not something I find particularly special. I disliked it greatly.
I will never like this band. Mostly due to Anthony Keidis being either the most-annoying or worst (sometimes at the same time) singer in the rock genre outside of nu-metal. In general the RHCPs make me think of ritalin-eating high-energy bros and serves as an immediate knuckle punch of the *seek* button when heard in the car. Something legitimately positive: the other 3 are great musicians. I may not like the style but they can be enjoyable to listen to. At times. Sum: yes please give it away. 4/10 2 stars.
Why is this so popular? I can’t really remember a lot of songs on here besides the hits, and it’s so unnecessarily long. The musicians are good, but I do not like Anthony Kiedis as a vocalist. I prefer Californication, just because a lot of stuff on that is slower, and they tend to do that better than their usual style.
There were a group of guys from a particular school who were obsessed with this band in their teens. I remember listening to a lot of their hits but I'm not entirely sure I ever really liked them.
I guess I'm not as big of an RHCP fan as I thought. There's so much talent in this band and then Anthony Kiedis has to open his mouth and go bippity bap bop suck my weiner
The answer to the eternal question “What if beat poets liked meth?”
I loved the start of the album with The Power of Equality, If You Have to Ask, and Breaking the Girl. However, it fell off a slope after that. I disliked Funky Monks, and Suck My Kiss was absolutely terrible and abhorrent—it completely changed my mood about the album. There were some great songs here and there, but overall, I probably wouldn’t revisit the album as a whole. I definitely preferred the band when they were more introspective and heartfelt rather than funky.
ok highlights: breaking the girl, under the bridge (feb 26 2026)
the guitar is ok, the drums are too bright, and the vocals are generally bad
This album feels bloated. There's so many songs that should probably have been left out. There's a few standout hits in there, but it's hard to recall those over the straight up perverted, awful songs. Best songs: Under the Bridge, I Could Have Lied Worst songs: Apache Rose Peacock, Sir Psycho Sexy
First listen. Ok i guess, but I’d rather listen to Rage Against the Machine.
Fav: If You Have To Ask Least Fav: They’re Red Hot They play their instruments competently, but this is lost behind the atrocious lyrics and bloated track list which takes away from the charm of the actually good songs, which there aren’t many of. When they hit they do a decent job but the misses are the standouts, especially when it’s this long
Not a fan then, not a fan now.
**An ok album, loud, hard, not my cup of tea
Meh
Are these guys from California?
My friends brother had this on cassette and played it all the time. I remember it just sounding off. Three decades and change later I feel the same. They have a distinct sound and its not terrible, but for such a hit album there is not a lot of good here. Under the Bridge is fantastic, Suck My Kiss sounds like a Soundgarden or Audioslave song but with lyrics by Anthony Kiedis, I Could Have Lied isnt bad, when they go away from hard funk rock its infinitely better.
Under the Bridge is great! The rest is funky but annoying. I don’t think I’m a Pep Head
Meh. Under the bridge might still be ok to listen to, the rest is outdated and their sound is not appealing to me.
Got bored. Stopped listen8ng part way through
Better than their last album but not interested
not for me
I've heard this album before, but not for a long time. I like a few Peppers songs but generally have always thought they are overrated. This album hasn't gotten better with age. Just sounds like a band ripping off other acts. And Kiedes really can't find a note to save his life. I do like the guitar work on Under the Bridge.
Not my cup of noisy tea.
too many different styles. Something for real Peppers-Fans.
this was! okay. but long. good background music while working. 2.5/5
Didn't realise how much I didn't like this until having to listen to it from start to finish. It's a long album and the vocals/lyrics are pretty painful. Has a few moments that save it from a 1*.
This is not one piece. The chili peppers did not need to make this over an hour long. They did not have this much to say
Not as good as most people think it is.
Generic and Samey and incredibly tedious to get through. It's clear the band is based around a competent bass player because the entire album is driven by bass riffs. slightly stand out song: I could have Lied because it has some variation at least
I mean....it's fine? This album went on for way too long and did not do a good job of really capturing me. All the songs sound the same. It really isn't bad music, but I did get tired of it about halfway through. I think if I were to listen to just a few songs at a time, I'd be giving the chunks 3-4 stars. But listening as a whole got me annoyed.
thank god that’s over. felt like it lasted forever. the first 9 tracks were just dreadful. i considered giving up music altogether. the next 6 or so tracks were actually ok. then it got bad again. sir psycho sexy was weird. only one good song on here and that is under the bridge. anthony kiedis is a creep and should be in prison btw
There are two good songs on this album. From memory I thought they’d be enough to give it a good rating but, no. God funk sucks doesn’t it? So glad none of my friends got that RHCP tattoo they were talking about.
Okay, album now. It was a good album back then. Can't identify with this now.
I’ve never really liked RHCP. Most of their songs just sound like scattered drunming with over the top baselines and and man reading from his dream journal angrily. This was way too long and I could not tell many songs apart from each other. Under the Bridge is the saving grace but still, high 2.
whoever approved 73 minutes of the rhcp needs to be fired. predictably, this album was incredibly dull, interspersed with some vague moments of interest - under the bridge acts as their saving grace. in all honesty, i was willing it to end by the half an hour mark, knowing i was not even half way through. that tends to happen when you make an album where each song is as unmemorable as the last. what’s odd is i always considered myself a fan of the rhcp, but maybe i haven’t delved far enough into their back catalogue. let’s hope the rest of their albums can redeem them.
Under the Bridge almost drags this album to three stars, but there's a bit too much stupid stuff in here that almost sounds like a self-parody. I recognize how important this was for a genre I really cherish, but I don't think it holds up particularly well in 2024.
Funky monks is 10/10 Find it a bit too rock for me
There aren't many albums on this list that I have personal negative bias towards, but this is one. I've had 1 star albums that were easier to get through than this. I enjoy the instrumental sound they have, but man this is one of the top examples of vocals absolutely killing a band for me.
ehh kinda boring
Had to listen to it like a 15 year old but after that it ight
This one was fine but kind of annoying.
its okay! i feel uncomfortable listening to them though even if i like the music
Other than Under the Bridge it's not for me
I actually thought I’d like this one. I remember 14-year old me loving Under the Bridge when it was released, and I think I liked Give it Away and Suck My Kiss as well. Not so much now. The only good songs are the Bridge-song and Breaking the Girl. The rest are just soulless ballads or funky tracks without any substance. Flea and Frusciante do their job well, but it’s not good enough.
I don’t know. I lived through this period of music and I still can’t get into it. I know they are beloved by many but it all comes across as static to me. There’s some interesting musical idea occasionally. But not enough for me to care. 2/5
Bandet er faktisk tit virkelig tight og groovy, men vokalerne er ret træls og teksterne er fandme for dumme. For lang.
Øv for en gang hvidmandsfunk... Teksterne giver lige så lidt mening som Becks. Under the bridge er fed.
I like the singy songs more than the shouty songs. some of the lyrics are just terrible. not for me overall.
2+ Stars (6/15)
My god, this has not aged well. My heart sank when I saw how long this is and I did not do the bonus tracks. Apart from a couple of tracks this is tedious and Anthony’s ‘lyrics’ are beyond parody. I’ve seen them live as well
Am I being a little harsh on the Peps? I don’t think so. Breaking the Girl and I Could Have Lied are decent. Under the Bridge is great. The rest is simply not for me. Some of it is mildly irritating actually.
It’s a great band but Anthony Keidis really brings the group down.
This album has always seemed a bit overrated to me.
Liked many of the songs and the sound in general but holy fuck there is not anything remotely fun or dense enough here to justify the double album length. Lots of repeating choruses and even verses. And the frivilous far outweighs the poignant (Breaking the Girl, I could have Lied, Under the bridge) which I assume is the band’s forté. The rapping is not exactly standout either, though decent.
The instruments are good enough. But then you put on Anthony Keidis and it's like putting diarrhea on a cake.
Album qui groove, intéressant à jouer mais pas forcément à écouter ...
Rock funk101 but the songs are better individually than together in an album context. Musically the journey is disjointed. Poor album but a great collection of songs.
It’s wild to me that “under the bridge” and “give it away” are basically perfect songs and everything else here is mediocre.
I used to know all thr words to Sir Psych Sexy. Nuff said!
Before this album: I don't really like RHCP based on their radio singles, but I'll give it a shot. After this album: I don't really like RHCP. Note: A few songs were alright. I quite enjoyed "Breaking the Girl" and "I Could Have Lied".
Played loud it sounds exciting and I imagine it was great live... But I can't really go along with all the macho nonsense so it's 2 stars from me.
This album would be like 4 if you could delete Anthony Kiedis from it
it's not really very good considering the praise it gets. Some good songs are there, as whole package I don't like it. Will I listen to again: 2%
A difficult band to listen to, in general, this album being no exception. The problem is the genre. For the most part, I hate the alt-rock / rap scene, or whatever it is I’m listening to here. But every now and then they throw in a decent rock song that is deserving of a second listen. I can’t sit through an album of junk to get to the diamonds, though. So, RHCP will always be a singles band for me.
Not a fan
Not my jam
bekannte Band und unbekanntes Album
I don't quite get RHCP I guess. Apart from Under The Bridge and maaaaybe Give It Away, I didn't really like any of the songs. Also it's honestly too long of an album, if you'd cut about 20-25 minutes off it, you'd get a more cohesive record.
I love funk, I love rock, but can’t stand these guys music. They’re good musicians, I just disagree with their idea of what sounds good.
there is great alternative radio rock from the 90s. and then theres this. 1.5/5
Only kind of like a few songs from this album, even when it first came out.
Under The Bridge saves it from being a 1 star
Maybe I'm just a misanthrope.
pretty mixed feelings about this one. – a friend of mine used to be a fan of RHCP when we were in hghschool and we even saw them live. I haven't really listened to them since (~8 years) so this is a bit of a fun throwback – the instrumentals are really good, and I do like the production of the album – Kiedis can't sing – I absolutely cannot stand either of them as people – I would be perfectly happy to not hear anything from RHCP ever again
not a fan
Most of the songs on this album sound the same. Not a fan tbh.
There’s so much of it - so much of it- tracks indistinguishable from the last until we get to Under the Bridge which is a highlight - less brash, more vulnerable, where otherwise the band are boastful and sex obsessed. I likr Flea - the bass is dope. Otherwise i just don’t get it.
Listened to on Audeze LCD-2C. Really fun and engaging song writing, with one of the most insufferable vocalists/frontmen in the music industry. Cannot stand everything about Anthony Kiedis. Suck My Kiss honks though.
Some funky stuff I like, mostly hyper masculine weirdo shit.
Meh. Lots of the same from RHC.
Kiedis is a bit noncey so it makes listening to this era RHCP a bit weird. Enjoyed it tho and a few bangers on there
I will never understand a snare drums sounding like it's in an empty sports court...
A somewhat uninspiring journey through constant funk and innuendos. What shines is the musicianship, Frusciante, Flea Chad Smith all work overtime to keep the groove. What lets this album down unfortunately is Anthony's vocals. While they are rhythmically catchy, the semi-shouted word vomit that plagues every song lets the whole album down. That being said, Under the Bridge slaps
RHCP Blood Sugar Sex Magik 46.68 Two great songs, four good songs, and an albums worth of shit. The Power Of Equality 60 If You Have To Ask 25 Breaking The Girl 73 Funky Monks 40 Suck My Kiss 60 I Could Have Lied 85 Mellowship Slinky In B Major 30 The Righteous & The Wicked 35 Give It Away 60 Blood Sugar Sex Magik 65 Under The Bridge 85 Naked In The Rain 45 Apache Rose Peacock 30 The Greeting Song 35 My Lovely Man 35 Sir Psycho Sexy 35 They're Red Hot 5
It's the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I've never been a fan of these guys, and listening to thus again didn't change my opinion.
Extremely long winded project that barely goes anywhere with it's ideas. It can't just be funky. There are some very telling noncey lyrics on here too. There is one truly great track out of 17. I was waiting for every track to move out of the usual schtick. I felt fairly exhausted of it by the end. Not impressed.
I didn't engage with this as much as they're more lowkey/psychedelic music. I was shocked when Under The Bridge came on; it feels like it's from a different era. (Side note, this is easily the coolest album cover so far.)
Made it 7 songs in. No likey
Yuck.
"Under The Bridge" saved this from a lower rating. Not my favorite RHCP.
Trying to put aside my knee jerk negative. Damn this album is long haha. I think I get why some folks love this. Def uniqueness and talent there. Not for me tho.
Some of the tracks are enjoyable (Give it Away and Under the Bridge) but most of it leaves me flat. They clearly have talent but choose to waste it most of the time with gross lyrics and thrash guitar. They’re a west coast rip off of the Beastie Boys.
It’s a no for me
Favorite Tracks: The Righteous & the Wicked Give It Away Under the Bridge
I continue to find the Red Hot Chili Peppers to be underwhelming for my tastes. I think they have some fantastic musicians and would probably like them better as an instrumental band. But Anthony’s voice is just kind of dull and the lyrics are lackluster to me. Most of it comes off to me as a really strong high school or college level band - which isn’t an insult, and the can be fun to listen to - but it does surprise me that they are as huge as they are, and I can’t get on that train.
"it's a decent album but it's not my favorite" - Kevin I'm not a pep girl
Un temazo que opaca al resto
Tedious drivel - never did get it and still don’t.
2/5 because it does have that one song that goes I DONT WANNA FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL how i did that day takemetotheplace I LOOOOOOVEEEE
Groovy basslines, but fuck me these lyrics.
I think I had to be there at the right time and place for this album. Of course “Under the Bridge” is a bit, but listening to the full album confirmed what I already knew: I’m not a fan of the Chili Peppers
Couple of good songs in this album, Flea’s bass sounded good, overall songs were not great
The only good song was Under the Bridge. The rest was not as good.
Do I have to? Outside of the two singles, I'm not finding much here my ear likes. I might not mind RHCP when they aren't so funky? Also never noticed the heavy mouth harp in Give it Away before. Not as bad as I expected, but nothing that changed my mind too much.
Under the Bridge 5/5 Rest not really it
Okay for background listening, but not my style.
Don't know what people like about such a dull band with such poor vocals. And Rick Rubin seems to produce an awful amount of shite for a so-called genius.
Anthony Kiedis is such a bonehead. I hope he's calling his band everyday to thank them for allowing him to leave this life despite having so little to offer.
God I hate RHCP. The only thing that saves them from a 1 is their undeniable musicianship. The singer should be out there flipping burgers for all I care. Also, what the hell are these lyrics??
A pile of garbage spread over an hour long and 2 powerful hit songs.
Memories of nineth grade at pinellas Park highschool flooding back. So many of these songs were played during clandestine bad youth smoking meetings on the handball court! Flea is neat.
I was hyped for this album because I like Under the Bridge as well as some RHCP songs from other albums. But turns out every song is like a worse version of Give it Away, a track I already dislike. Was feeling kind of tired of the vocalist's choppy flow by the end. Maybe the rating is lower because I had high expectations
I used to love this album, but now I think it's just aggressively mid. Anthony Keidis's voice really bugs the hell out of me. And why the hell is it over an hour long?! Under the Bridge and Give it Away are still good though.
If this were an instrumental album, I would lean towards a 4/5. Anthony Kiedis is a freaky ass rap-rock domestic terrorist.
Meh, it’s RHCP. If you’ve heard them you’ve heard them.
Wish I could give a 2.5. I wouldn't say I disliked the whole album enough for a 2 but not neutral enough for a 3. Felt like I was listening to the same song for an hour.
Ok
Miserable mainstream trope
Would've been better if they weren't so horny.
J'ai pas tout écouté, je reviendrai peut-être plus tard.
I don't really listen to the Chili Peppers anymore because rapist Anthony Kiedis grosses me out, but I like some of their albums quite a bit. Not this one, though.
like it's an album!!!
A couple good tracks, but mostly meh
From high school
No
Seems way too long. And the extra length hurts the albums when the biggest songs on this album run about 30 minutes. So the extra 40 minutes are unnecessary.... and honestly unwelcomed.
Great w/o vocals and lyrics
it’s alright ig. red hot chilli peppers kinda mid. Under the Bridge good tho
They are a huge stadium band but I don't get how they are so popular. Each to their own I suppose and I do actually have this.
A mix of funk rock and rock rap - neither of which I particularly like. I quite liked the soft rock tracks "Breaking the Girl" and "I Could Have Lied", but otherwise I'm not a fan - and this is supposed to be their best album?
Too long
Like a dead fish with sightless eyes, starting to rot and stinking to the heavens, this album hasn't aged well at all. I never liked this band and hated having to listen to their funk-metal hits in the 90s when they were charting. I'm not a hater of funk-metal either, but there's just something contrived and artificial about the red hot chilli peppers that just doesn't sit well at all with me. I tried really hard to listen to this without any bias, particularly because there was plenty here that I hadn't heard before. But it was ultimately hollow and soulless muzak that I didn't like one bit.
I only got until “Under the Bridge” because I was sure that I had heard everything the album had to offer at that point and I wasn’t really willing to sit through more songs, and especially an eight-minute track called “Sir Psycho Sexy.” I think I got the gist after a solid run of corny sex jams and half-baked political statements. I’m also not entirely sold on the “funk rock” thing the band seems to be going for. It sounded like they were trying so hard to be sexy and cool that it unfortunately just boiled over into weird and slightly creepy at times. It also didn’t help that I felt the lead singer’s voice sounded a bit obnoxious and forced. It had the quality of a caricature. I saw the charm in it for the first couple songs, but it wore off fairly quickly. The instrumentation is pretty nice at times, though, so good on the rest of the band. Fav tracks: The Power of Equality, Breaking the Girl, The Righteous & the Wicked, Under the Bridge
I knew some of the songs going into this but not the album. Give it away, under the bridge, suck my kiss I knew before. Didn't really like a slappy bass nature of the album, I found it used too heavily throughout the album. LIKED SONGS - Breaking the girl, Give it away, under the bridge, suck my kiss and Naked in the rain Average album, 2.5
Rage against the machine but instead of raging against the machine its just horny
Not all bad, but not my vibe. Best song: Under the Bridge
Melodischer Rock. Teils sehr geläufig wie "Under the Bridge".
This was certainly not what I expected, the OG Loc tier rapping caught me off guard. Not that I've listened to much RHCP before. I Could Have Lied is much closer to my expectations, awesome sound too. This album's all over the place, I wish they had went with the I Could Have Lied's vibe. Just not feeling the funk
There's a depressed quality to RHCP's I'm not prepared to overlook. Funk is it? Yeh. Funk off.
j'aime pas les red hot de toute façon
fucking hate RHCP, but under the bridge is a good song
I don't like this. I think when Mr Kedis actually sings rather than doing his interpretation of white man rap its okay (under the bridge, I could have lied being highlights) but the first song is obnoxious and the title track just isn't very good.
Désolé beau-papa
This was probably the hardest album to rate that I've been given so far. Even after listening to the full thing, I alternated between thinking it couldn't possibly be anything less than a three, to wanting to give it a one, to seriously considering giving it a four. I'm not even sure if the fact that I somehow managed to end up listening to two generated albums in the same day, and the other one was Van Halen's "1984" (a one, if you're wondering), made me more or less lenient towards this album. By this point I'm kind of sick of the sexually explicit lyrics in so much rock on this list. Weirdly enough, "1984" elicited that reaction more strongly for me, and I think this album is the better end of that type of rock. The Chilli Peppers in general are a very weird band for me, as someone with a preference for a strong melody and well written lyrics. They have several songs I like, and a talented lyricist. I tend to have a strong preference for their softer songs, however, because the obnoxious shouty style they go for in a lot of their more upbeat material is not my cup of tea. There are a few exceptions to this though. The only other album of theirs I've heard is "Californication," which I honestly WAY prefer to this. I'm only slightly more familiar with it, but I seem to recall liking most of if not the entire track list. In addition to being way more cohesive, it leans more towards their softer side, whereas this one leans heavily towards their shouty side. If I'm being entirely honest, I had already heard this album in its entirety, but didn't remember much of it. My friend played the whole thing to me once when I was staying at her place. The only thing I really remember was dancing really crazily to the title track even though I didn't like it. This means that the song is now vaguely nostalgic to me and I can almost say I have a love-hate relationship with it. I was surprised when listening, to find out that I knew other songs too. I didn't think I particularly remembered "Give it Away," but I got a sense of deja vu when the chorus hit. Apparently it was a hit, so before you get shocked that I haven't heard it, not only is this not my era (I'm in my 20s) but I don't know much music, which is why I'm listening to this list. Obviously, I knew "Under the Bridge," although mainly just for the opening line: "sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner." I had no idea it was called "Under the Bridge" either, and I knew it was the Chilli Peppers but I'd forgotten it was on the album. Those two songs ended up being my favourites on the album. "Give it Away" was one of the exceptions I mentioned earlier in regards to not liking their shouty stuff. Yes, it has no melody, but the chorus is so undeniably catchy. I have to say, however, that I'm infinitely grateful I wasn't around when it was a hit. It's one of those insanely repetitive hooks that I could imagine getting annoying really quickly if the radio was constantly playing it. "Under the Bridge" is, of course, the only softer song on the album. It was great. The lyrics were imagery rich and emotionally moving. They really told a story. According to Wikipedia, this song actually isn't about sex, which was weird because my initial thought was that it contained my favourite double entendre on the whole album: "under the bridge downtown is where I drew some blood/ under the bridge downtown I could not get enough/ under the bridge downtown forget about my love/ under the bridge downtown I gave my life away." The most objective criticism I have of this album is that it was very long. I started to lose interest shortly after "Under the Bridge." I really think it should've been the last track. There was only so much I could handle of this style of music. Favourite songs: Under the Bridge, Give it Away
Disliked the first half of the album although a few of the later songs I liked more. Definitely prefer the other Chilli Peppers music I’ve heard.
I always thought I liked RHCP but Under the Bridge was the only bearable track on this album.
some songs are tight. Couldnt make it through the whole album without skipping though.
PREFS : Breaking the Girl, Suck My Kiss, Mellowship Slinky in B Major, Give It Away, Under the Bridge MOINS PREF : Sir Psycho Sexy
Found this underwhelming but I love that the bass is so emphasized for a change instead of being a background instrument.
I don’t need to hear Anthony Keidis rap/singing about sex for 75 mins
2 Red Hot Chili Peppers - a band I’ve never felt that strongly towards. They have a handful of songs I kind of like, a handful I don’t, and everything else of theirs is pretty meh - never really bought into the hype surrounding these guys. I’ve heard this album before and figured this was going to be around a 3 for me, but man, about halfway through my listening, I had this slow realization that… I don’t really like this album. I kind of forgot how unbearable Anthony Kiedis is when he’s in full funk mode, and I was really sick of the whole thing by the end. There are definitely high moments - Under the Bridge is a great tune, and probably the best thing Anthony has ever penned. I think the only valid criticism to aim towards the song is that it's overplayed. Also, as is tradition, I have to call out The Power of Equality as being in Tony Hawk’s Underground 2. While I don’t love the song, it will always hold a special place in my heart because of it. Breaking the Girl is a pretty solid song I totally forgot was on this album (if you asked me, I probably would have told you it’s One Hot Minute or Stadium Arcadium), and I Could Have Lied also isn’t bad. But ultimately, despite everything I said earlier of Kiedis in funk mode, I think Suck My Kiss is actually my favorite song on the album. It’s catchy, and I appreciate that it’s straight-up about its sexual themes without being overly vulgar or trying to pretend it’s anything deep or thought-provoking, which is more than I can say about a lot of the band’s other stuff… That segues into my other major criticism of this album and the band - I don’t think Anthony Kiedis is a good lyricist. His lyrics are decent at best and nonsense at worst, the latter especially in more recent years. Admittedly, some of his strongest moments probably live on this record, but then there’s also stuff like this: “Holy mother earth crying into space Tears on her pretty face for she has been raped Killing your future blood, fill her with disease Global abortion, please, that is what she needs” Ugh. And then there’s Give It Away, which is supposedly about altruism. Alright, sure, but in what world do the lines “What I got, you got to get it put it in you” and “Drinkin' my juice, young love chug-a-lug me” have to do with being charitable? Come on dude, just admit you wanted to write another song about sex. At least this one wasn’t as graphically specific as Sir Psycho Sexy *shudders* This album really should have ended after Under the Bridge, cause man, at that point you’ve really already gotten everything you need out of your listening, but it just decides to keep going with a string of what are probably the six worst songs on the album. Apache Rose Peacock in particular is an abomination - musically it’s annoying, but oh my God this may be Anthony Kiedis at an all-time lyrical and vocal worst. I think this the first album so far that my opinion has gone down on since its inclusion on this list. There are moments to be had here for sure, but this is definitely not a full album listen for me again anywhere in the near future.
Mjög langt síðan ég hef hlustað á RHCP og hef ekki misst af neinu svakalegu. Tveir absolute bangers, restin er meh.
With Rick Rubin behind the boards, the Peppers get down to what makes their sound interesting and make their best album. Sadly it leaves one wishing Rubin had done his usual reduction magic and trimmed some of the fat from this overlong slog.
Ongelmia tulee niille, joiden hullaantumiset kohdistuvat toisaalle.
I only really liked Give It Away and Under the Bridge from this album. The other songs were tolerable at best.
Sorry Anthony Kiedis, I don't want to Break the Girl or Suck your Kiss nor do I care what happened Under the Bridge or when you were Naked in the Rain. The lyrics and vocals are the death of my enjoyment here. What I want is to listen to Flea, Frusciante, and Chad freakin' jam. The music on the record is tops, one of the best for the Peppers, I think. The rest (Kiedis) is flops. All the stars to the players.
2.5
Funky weird and sprinkled with a few good songs.
There are a few diamonds, but they're buried in a lot of rough.
What to say about this album? Meh? My first contact with it has been confusings. The musicianship is top notch, and the recording quality is extremely high. I like 90s, beastie boys type rap. I like funk. I like Rage Against the Machine. I like Dispatch when they were going more Rage Against The Machine. I like Rick Rubin... I think I do? I get this "eeehhhhh" taste in my mouth after listening to it for too long. Maybe they spend too much time on a single idea, and it gets boring to my ear? My negative feelings, I can't explain it! I'm all turned around! I want to feel the feelings of this album! But then I got to "Suck My Kiss" and I feel repulsed. Maybe it's the jammy, blues structures. Maybe it's the same-ness. You might have to just give me more time to form an opinion on this one. I can't keep up! I'm having a nervous breakdown! 2/5
Big album at the time but never fully got into it and was disappointed after Mother's Milk. For starters, it is very long and lyrics are - as per RHCP default - terrible, but a new low is reached with the title song. Just like Wonderwall I cannot listen to Under The Bridge anymore. Yet, the instrumental basis of several songs is great, but the vocals and lyrics are so weak and annoying that the album is pretty unlistenable in one go (even though I still managed) and it is just too hard to justify a score of +3.
I owned this album in high school and concluded that I am not an RHCP guy. I'm listening to this 30 years later and I have confirmed I am still not an RHCP guy. Some fun instrumentation, but dumb, dumb lyrics. Kiedis's delivery veers wildly between shitty rapping, out of tune singing, and a bad George Clinton impression. At least we get a Frusciante album on the list, before these guys became completely insufferable.
This is a good album. The radio really did a number on them. If I ever want to hear the Red Hot chili peppers I can just turn on the radio.
I don’t really need to ever listen to a Res Hot Chili Peppers album. Their radio hits are decent, but this was pretty uninteresting.
Angelfire-ass music. I can see the rotating gifs and bright links as I listen to this. Masterful lyricism: "Ugh yeah. Blowjobs are awesome!" - repeat for an hour and 13 minutes. Jesus, this album is long for absolutely no reason. Anthony Kiedis can sing pretty well, so I don't understand why he's so insistent on rapping. I get second-hand embarrassment every time he tries to rap-sing about a "creamy beaver hotter than a fever" (that's an actual lyric from this album. You can doublecheck). "Under the Bridge", overplayed as it may be, is the best song here. 2/5. Come on man.
I just don’t get the appeal. I don’t like the subject matter, I don’t like the execution of said subject matter, and I don’t like the preying on young female fans and getting away with it. It’s a no from me.
One of my more embarrassing opinions is that I have been known to defend RHCP, but not even I can defend this. There are about three or four OK songs on this album and a whole lot of bad ones and it's just not an album that is enjoyable to listen to straigh through. They always seem to think that more is more, but we could all use a little less from Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
Personal opinions on the band aside, a competently mastered and mixed album. Gets a bit repetitive (each song blends in to the next, not in a good way) by the end, but funky none the less.
What you got, I must respectfully decline-a.
Look, I loved this when it came out. Listening to it now, I got herpes.
I'll start with the positives - there are some good individual performances here, for sure. The dynamics on this album are cool. There's a three-song stretch in the middle of the album that is top notch. The case against - this album is far too long and flabby. Kiedis' voice is sub-optimal and characterless. And the worst bit - this tries so hard, with much sweat and effort, to give you the impression that the Chilis are Good Sex Men. I've said before now that genuine sex elf Prince sometimes sounded ridiculous when asserting his bedroom credentials, but these guys never had the mystique in the first place.
Songs I Liked: Breaking the Girl, Funky Monks, Under the Bridge. 2/5 - mainly because I didn’t really like the rap-style delivery on many tracks.
Yuk. One of those "change my mind moments." Never liked them. Never listened to a whole album. Here goes...Yeah no change. Hate the white boy funk swagger, dislike AKs voice. Lyrics are bollox. Guitarist is good. Massively overrated band.
Way too long and just not my vibe
This has a couple good songs, some nice bass lines, otherwise it's mostly just annoying and juvenile. No thanks.
This album largely stunk outside of the hits. Really disappointed in this. Favorite track: Give It Away
I’ve never really got the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I’m fine if they are playing somewhere, on the radio or in the background. But for me the sum of their parts adds up to less than the whole. I wouldn’t go out of my way to play them and I never particularly believed the hype. I find them tedious and self-serving so this a no-no!
The first time I heard Chasing the Girl, I was on shrooms, and I thought it was the greatest song of all time. Spoiler alert: it's not. Anthony Keidis might be my least favorite singer ever (which is not something I realized until I participated in this project). I don't like how he sings or what he sings about. I'm not giving them one star, though, because the musicians are good, I just wish they put their talents to better use. Also, I had a fun time listening to Chasing the Girl that one time, and that's not worth a star, than what is?
some catchy songs and instruments but vocals are too annoying
Under the bridge och Give it away är ju bra. I övrigt inte särskilt spännande.
Is this the bad that lead us to rap metal? It told me to wake up and smell the slime in the first song. Flea does have some funky base lines. My lilly white ass is tickled pink by music that makes me think. Truly the voice of a generation. This explains the 90s. Suck my kiss doesn't hold up. The lyrics are half scat nonsense. 17 songs is a lot. Patty fell asleep. It is all well done and played, but I don't think I would listen again. Start to righteous and the wicked was some cool sounding guitar. Was it mixed weird? Bass was all over the place. Maybe just the Spotify version?
I own this one on CD but haven't listened to it in many many years. I know this album is very beloved and the music might objectively be great, but somehow I only really connect to the slower songs.
Just Anthony Kiedis singing about a blowjob he once had.
Quite same-y throughout. Under the Bridge is a fantastic song, the rest of this album is pretty forgettable. Not a strong RHCP album.
Mjeh
Noisy shit, not even UtB can save it
Love Under the Bridge. Wish Soul to Squeeze was on this album. Give it Away is solid...the filler songs are really bad. Glad I never bought this when I was younger. 2.5/5
18 year old me would be so upset with adult me for hating this. Their music didn’t age well for me and I just find it annoying, sure it’s funky and the band itself is good at what they’re doing, they’re tight I give them credit for that but their music is so annoying. I guess it really boils down to me thinking Kiedis is a chud and his vocals are dumb. 2.5/5 but I refuse to round up mostly bc
