Reviews (page 2 of 14)

Can’t get over the fact that Anthony raped a 14 year old girl, not once, but multiple times; then wrote about it in his book. Kind of deflates the entire raison d’etre for RHCP. Oh yeah, the bassist and drummer have SA charges too…

“I’m forever near a stereo saying, ‘What the fuck is this garbage?’ And the answer is always ‘The Red Hot Chili Peppers.’”

The only ok album by the most annoying and inexplicably hyped band of the 90s who, for reasons science will never explain, are still going strong?! and it's got like 7 minutes out of 73(!) that are good and they've been overplayed beyond the threshold of any possible further enjoyment. Hyperactive, aggressively silly, grating raps and overwrought juvenile emotion, they're an overgrown novelty act. Guitar guys love John Frusciante for some reason? He's fine but just plays Hendrix leads and Nile Rodgers rhythms...

I hate this. The tracks are far too long, as is the record (75 minutes?!), the lyrics are absolute shit, and the songwriting seems to be a jam session between three people who are trying to figure out what's next. Fuck's sake.

I could not bear the thought of listening to this shit so instead I took off all my clothes and spent the day with only a sock on my dick. I was cold and nobody thought it was funny.

Fuck these guys suck

Trash. The funk/rock hybrid is kind of fun, but Kiedis’ vocals are so incredibly irritating, any semblance of enjoyment is quickly lost. I swear this band has the most fan tattoos of any I know. Why? How? How is this, of all things to give a sign of public and permanent allegiance to, the thing someone chooses? Bad bad bad. Bad.

WE GONNA KEEP OUR CHILDREN AWAY FROM YOU ANTHONY! STOP TOUCHING THE LITTLE ONES!

Nick Cave: "I’m forever near a stereo saying, ‘What the fuck is this garbage?’ And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers." Did I expect to enjoy this? No. Did I go in with preconceived expectations? Yes. I just don't get what people see in the RHCP. It's like someone took an annoying high school white boy funk band and decided what they really needed was a super-whiny singer. I thought Give It Away was about a bad a song as they could make... But then the next song was even worse!

Well wading through this was a chore. Never really listened closely to them and now I can understand why they have never got my attention. I thought they were a lot rockier than this but it’s more hip hop (c)rap than rock. To be fair my musical tastes are nowhere near what’s produced here so so cannot assess if it’s musically good or not but it certainly makes no impression with me. 1/5 10/10/25

Wow, eye opener, you think because it has Under The Bridge it should be good, then turns out the rest of it is both tuneless and classless.

garbage, hated it

I did not like this at all. The lyrics were so bad too 😭😭😭

Gross.

terrible

Gave it the full (so long) listen, and conclusion is this: There are people who like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I do not understand them. And I do not want to.

Big No to sterile corny white boy rap. Why tf is this album on the list of stuff to hear before you die. Ten thumbs down

Closer to what I expect from RHCP, here the good song/constipated funk workout with terrible vocals ratio is about 1:16 (and I'm being generous to "Under The Bridge" here). So fucking long, and every song is the same, and over 4 min for no goddam reason - how can a track listing with titles like "Funky Monks" or "Sir Psycho Sexy" (8 fucking minutes!) promise anything other than deep, existential horror? I was desperately praying (in vain) that "Naked In The Rain" was a Blue Pearl cover. Appalling

Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony…

Hyvää kamaa. Jammailuttaa pirusti.

Wicked

Memories of smoking Colts and singing along to Sir Psycho Sexy with Garth is worth 10 stars

Masterpiece

I was big into RHCP back in the day, but mostly due to Californication and By The Way. I never got into this album at the time, but I can appreciate it much more now. Some instant classics and some great surprises. It's a shame Keidis is a piece of shit

muy muy muy chimba, lo tengo en cd y es re top global

One of my all time favourites

Excellent album!

An absolute banger of an album that managed put the Chilli Peppers into a whole other commercial league, but is one of the landmark recordings that saw the 90s alternative rock boom be 'a thing'. Rick Rubin's presence as producer was hugely influential, helping Chad Smith sound like John Bonham and giving the creative playing of John Frusciante a real voice on record. 'Under the bridge' was a huge single and gave a new credibility to this, up to this point, rather punky bunch. They almost messed it up but managed to rescue it eight years later......the best funk and rock fusion up to that point

Not one of their best albums but at that time it opened the view on "crossover" music to a total new level.

Giveitaway giveitaway giveitaway now

Another album that changed my perspective on what music could be. This was fun but also some raw emotion as well. The rolling rhythms, funky basslines and just otherworldly guitar sold me on this band. Some might detract on the lyrics but for what the band was, these lyrics were perfect.

Very good

Simplemente maravilloso, como fan de los RHCP considero este album como su 2do mejor. Se muestra una faceta nueva de la banda que despues se vuelve a traer en sus posteriores que es el funk rock. Ademas de tener su clasico rock metal en temas como Suck my Kiss o Give it away, encontramos temas mas chill o funk como I could have lied o Under the bridge. Una banda con tanto exito e impacto en la cultura mas contemporanea con tantos hiit y mas de 10 discos es importante que este en estos 1001 albumes. That mouth was made to suck my kisssssssss Top Picks: 1- Suck my Kiss 2- Under the bridge 3- I could have Lied 4- Funky Monks the yapa

The wild thing is even if you set aside the three big (two huge) hits, it's still a five star album.

Five stars because: 1) I count this album as a key shift in my music education from middle to high school 2) RHCP influenced to many others 3) The songs are still shockingly great today

sometimes dad rock is right

A lot of people on here are hating but I like this album. I already had a few songs saved, so it was nice to hear the full thing, as I’ve never done so before. 5 stars

The best album of RHCP

As an RHCP fan, you can imagine how excited I was to get this! And this album is just as good now as it was. Pure dopamine and joy and also such emotional depth, which RHCP was always strong at underneath it all. Love love love them for life!

Hahaha. Yeah I know this one just a little bit.

Awesome album

1. 5/5, no notes

Muy bueno, muy mi estilo, quizás algunas canciones un poco largas y el álbum también.

A funky jam all the way through

A masterpiece, one of the All Time Best in every style.

Know this one well.

Even though this was the album they decided to not include "Soul to Squeeze," Rick Rubin deserves credit for pushing Anthony to present "Under the Bridge" to the rest of the band. A bloated CD era album, an ok John, and a mostly annoying Anthony could potentially drop this one to a 3 star rating. However, Chad, Flea, and the mere cultural significance help make this an essential listen.

Funky Monks

Dionysian

Objectively RHCP at their best

Excellement excellent, Groupe de mon enfance ce qui crée un énorme biais mais le groupe s'est trouvé une identité grâce à cet album et toutes les émotions sont présentes. Je ne parle pas de la technique qui est aboutie pour tout le monde sans exception

This was really good, but like a song or two wasn’t amazing but I still have to give it a 5

Played this so so much at the time. Funky and energetic and passionate and exciting. Under the Bridge is so painfully beautiful

fantastic. discovered some gems

One from my youth

Yes, the class of '91 again! Seriously, I was really looking forward to getting another album from September 1991—the month that turned the music world upside down. Of course, the Red Hot Chili Peppers had been around before, but with “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”, they brought a whole lot of funk and a dash of rap into the rock/metal mainstream. Of that year’s crop, the Chili Peppers were probably the most accessible, and “Give It Away”—as well as, of course, “Under The Bridge”—became the soundtrack of 1991 and 1992. RHCP were, of course, known for their eccentric stage presence and Flea’s virtuoso bass playing; but back then, I had missed the virtuosity of the other musicians and the massive Hendrix vibes in the Peppers’ sound. Unlike their contemporaries (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, ... you name it), the Chili Peppers remained a defining force in music throughout the 90s, operating outside the mainstream—which was, after all, quite disappointing in that decade. A truly significant milestone in rock history!

Amazing the first half

While the Red Hot Chili Peppers arguably overstayed their welcome in the mainstream, they really earned that spot in my opinion. Their sound is so smooth and unique. If you put RHCP radio on, none of the other songs will sound close. You'd think with this level of uniqueness would come obscurity but no, they are a huge band with a popular sound. I think that Blood Sugar Sex Magik is a bit bloated. Would have been a strong 40 min album if they cut the fat. But the hits are so good it's hard to knock it too much.

Great Lyrics

love this album and i love this band so much, the three musicians in this band are absolutely tremendous together. this album really holds up for me

This might have been their peak. Great tempo and vocal variety. Love the funk!

Very good classic album

Unfortunately I fear that I love this. Goddamn. Limp Bizkit meets Pixies meets funk. How the fuck do you not get down with this. And Flea is straight up one of the best bass guitarists to ever play in a rock band. Fuck me this was fun. Listening to this, my eyes popped out, my dick got hard, and I dropped my jaw. Seriously.

Haven’t listened to this since university. Under the Bridge is a classic. Curious to see how the rest holds up. Hit after hit. I find his voice grating, but you can't deny this is the album to go to if you want this specific vibe. In spite of long run time, feels short.

One of my favorite albums, easy 5, a few songs that I didn't care for as much but thats expected. With a 73 min album plus the number of songs I loved canceled those out easily. The band was tight on this album, 2nd album with Chad smith and John frusciante.

Too long but loved it all the same.

Just damn. Daaaaaamn. Really liked it. Every song was good. I loved the vibe and lyrics too. I can say it was touching. It had lots of different vibes but same style, which is really great. I have saved some songs for later. And just maybe I will see these review later or someone, I have to say that it is only my impression of first listening. Maybe my mind will change after few times. But this album is the best one I heard so far. Definitely recommended. 4.5/5 for me there are better albums I hope so. But so far very catchy groovy and beautiful album.

This is an amazing album with so many awesome tracks. I own the double vinyl of this and have heard it a bunch of times, and I still love it. Everything is so perfect, one of the best albums of all time IMO. Five stars, easily.

One of the most badass funk-rock albums ever pressed.

This album rocks. Funky, fun, punk, rock, genre flipping like crazy. The instrumental group behind RHCP (flea, Chad, John) are probably my favorite grouping ever. Kiedis isn't for everyone, but he does make for a unique sound.

Listened in the car and at Costco. Amazing record. Three incredible musicians (and Anthony Kiedis) managed to make a super fun, but also varied, and memorable album. That Sexy Shaman song or whatever was just bad lyric wise. No defending that one.

The goat

RHCP at their funkiest, just before their massive pop explosion, packed with major hits. Really nice album with a lot of slap bass funk roots.

This is one of the records that started it all for me! How the path led to blackened thrash metal and powerviolence? I dunno bro, but I'm grateful for four dudes in tube socks locking themselves in a room to accidentally invent "horny haunted-mansion funk metal". Best part? It STILL jamz. Filthy, soulful, chaotic and, at times, downright stupid... but somehow still feels like the coolest shirt in your closet you refuse to retire. Makes me feel SEXY

капец супер классно сук я их люблю

Peak 100/100

Album 1042 of 1089 Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Red Hot Chili Peppers (1991) Rating : 4.5 / 5 this one absolutely delivers. The band is clearly at the top of their game here - everything that makes them them is firing on all cylinders. Flea’s bass is relentless, Frusciante’s guitar riffs are sharp and memorable, Chad Smith locks it all down with authority, and Anthony Kiedis sounds fully comfortable in his role as frontman. What really stands out is how complete this album feels. The songs hit, the production is spot on, and the personality of the band oozes out of every track without ever feeling forced. It moves effortlessly between funk, rock, and something uniquely their own, and it never loses momentum from start to finish. This is the album that truly put them over the top, and it’s easy to hear why. Confident, energetic, and unmistakably Chili Peppers - a keeper in every sense.

Favourite Songs: If You Have To Ask Suck My Kiss Give It Away Sir Psycho Sexy

Nothing else I would rather rap to. This wails!!

One of the best albums of its generation

Adorei esse álbum, ele é muito bom mds!

Loved it. Better than Stadium Arcadium for me. Even with a cheeky couple of Jimi Hendrix covers sneaked in.

I had a pretty big RHCP phase in college, but haven't listened to them much since then. However, this album has always stood out to me and persisted past my disinterest in the band. The bass playing and drumming are just way too good and tight. This is peak RHCP, they are at their best when they are being funky and this has some of the funkiest songs they have also written. A lot of people shit on Anthony, but I think his talk-singing semi-rapping works really well on this album and perfectly complements the upbeat funk songs. My biggest problem with this album is that the last couple of songs (besides Sir Pyscho Sexy which is one of my favorite RHCP songs) are filler songs. Mid 5.

Great album and great band

One of my favorite albums of all time!

You really can’t dispute the longevity of RHCP’s career, they’ve had a knack of popping up and blowing a generation away with an album that becomes the soundtrack to your teenage years. I missed out on the timing for this album but was old enough for the Californication buzz. This album and one hot minute were those that your older siblings would have on 24/7. Listening to this now, I still think it holds up, you can hear the influence for 311, and the whole genre of nu metal

Clásico ❤️

It should be noted that I despise Anthony Kiedis for his childish behavior with regards to Mr Bungle and because he is likely a pervert. That being said, this is their best album.

A classic album I’ve listened to so many times over the years. Flea’s bass really stands out to me in any Chili Peppers song, but this album might be the peak RHCP experience. It’s a little bloated with some of the songs at the end of the album, but the first 12 or so songs are just dynamite and worthy of a 5 star rating.

Powah of equality

Deeply horny album

Un monolito que décadas después sigue intacto.

Yes, it's a FIVE.

One of the horniest albums ever. Every song is its own standout. Phenomenal.

This is a great album. "Mother's Milk" was a good album too and this took that and improved upon it. "Breaking The Girl" might be the best song on this album... but "Under The Bridge" will always overshadow most of these songs. "Give It Away" and "Suck My Kiss" were also solid singles. Possibly their best album... but they did pretty good for themselves with the album Californication too.

his album is inseparable from a moment in my life, and it earns that weight without needing nostalgia to do all the work. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is long and a little bloated, no question, but the highs are so high and so frequent that it barely matters. When this record hits, it really hits. The groove-first approach is what makes it last. Flea and Chad Smith lock into something physical and undeniable, and John Frusciante’s guitar work brings both restraint and melody in a way that transformed the band. Songs like “Under the Bridge,” “Give It Away,” and “Breaking the Girl” show real range without losing identity. Even the funkier, dirtier tracks feel purposeful rather than indulgent. Yes, it could be trimmed. Yes, not every idea is essential. But the sheer volume of great songs, combined with how confidently the band inhabits this sound, makes it hard to argue against its stature. This is the album where everything clicked, artistically and culturally. For me, this is a five. Flawed, sprawling, and occasionally excessive, but packed with timeless tracks and anchored to a sound and feeling that still holds up. Some records define an era. This one also defines a relationship with music, and that counts.

Still goes hard

Consistent TUNES and the transitions were seamless RHCP instrumentals will rarely let you down Best = Breaking the girl Skip = Mellowship slinky in B major ofc the freakiest song is the longest

This was a fun album to get on day three. Unlike the first two, I have listened to this LP a hundred times, and it never fails to please. I thought about Mishaun and how awkward it was to share a love of this band with him when the lyrics are so inappropriate! :)

C’mon. Top tier. Even if there are a few songs that could be cut.

I feel i have to give it 5 stars. Its more for its affect on me when i first heard it. It is too long. But in the right scenario its great .

Awesome album, brings back memories…such a good time when this album came out. I was a fan of RHCP before this, I remember my first taste was watching the movie thrashin’ and seeing them perform Blackeyed Blonde. (Great song, not on this album). I think this album was what really propelled them into the fame level they are in today

Some of the lyrics were INSANE but 90s alt rock is my weakness

Such a strong album with just a few filler tracks towards the end (not including the jimi covers). But there are several tracks that go beyond 5 stars and make this one of my favourite albums of artists that I would personally rank tier 2 (say somewhere in range top 20-50 of artists). Think the title track, If You Have To Ask, I Could Have Lied, Give It Away and of course Under The Bridge.

How i wore out this cd. The soundtrack of my early 90ies. I know some of it might sound outdated today, but at the time it was such a gamechanger nothing but ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ would be rude.

Red Hot! 🥵

Long album, but an easy listen. Some of these albums feel like they go on for years, this was longer than most of those and felt like a breeze. Shows the impact of a great album. Some really standout songs, a solid feel all the way through.

One of the best albums from an all-time favourite band. Seen them 3 times

Favourite Songs: If You Have To Ask Suck My Kiss Give It Away Sir Psycho Crazy

Another 80's band I ignored for some reason, so I didn't have any of the familiarity the rest of you grew up with and I'm so glad I listened to this album before I die. I didn't love the vocals off the top but the drums-bass-guitar are phenomenal, and by the end I was even liking the vocals. Better late than never, looking forward to growing into this one.

I mean, it’s the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I spent waay too long without listening to the full album through. And… holy shit? The only potential criticism I have is that it finishes ab little soft but that’s just the price you pay when you have so many absolute bangers. I’ve heard most of these songs ambient before but sitting down and going through the whole album, really savoring them has been great. Not just a must listen, but more of a “if you live in the anglophone world you *have* heard all these songs.

Classic. Awesome. Brings me back to when I was a teenager.

Gran disco

I luv this…so funky! 74 minutes is a bit too long but I didn’t get bored

Love this Album

I still think Anthony Kiedis is a creep, but these songs were very influential to me when I was starting to learn bass

Bue. Nada que aclarar. Disco obligatorio. Obra maestra. Lo conozco de memoria y aún así lo volví a escuchar cuando salió. 10/10

I’ll be honest, I must have listened to this album a thousand times, I’ve been through one copied cassette and two CD copies, so I didn’t feel the need to listen again. This is by far and away the best Chilli’s album, it’s the pinnacle of their early output, and the less said about Californication and everything that came after it the better. This album is a funk rock masterpiece, and one of the defining records of my early life, it’s a shame that Antony Kedis is now a pretty questionable character, but this was always Flea’s band. I think the fact that early and late chilli’s are so strikingly different makes it easier to ignore the dross they now come out with, and the gross actions of the frontman, and still hold this up as the sound of a band at their peak.

the pinnacle

Best rhcp album, last of the really good ones

Perfection! Under A Bridge and Give It Away are genuine classics now, but bangers in the day for sure. These guys always have been awesome.

A classic, really like this one. The soundtrack to some pivotal times in my high school years, holds up very well.

Best album of the decade!

I'm gonna get rambly here. This is a special album for me. Growing up without an older sibling or older cousins or hip friends to show me new music, I had to wait to stumble across something to be turned on to the benefits of rock music. This was that album for me. It was my entry point. (I learned to play drums to this album.) For that, I will always love it. Unlike other albums from that period that I have worn out and no longer care to listen to, this is one I still spin on occasion. And it still friggin cranks! You can feel the energy of the music being PLAYED in a way that's not like any other album. You can hear the energy and nuance in each string-pluck and drumhead-slap. It amazes me to this day how this album sounds. And John Frusciante? C'mon! The dude is freakin' unreal on this album. I also love how the songs have no gaps between them. One right into the next, taking the listener for a ride. Because of this album, I always have a higher appreciation for other albums that do that. And when I record with bands of my own, I always push to take that approach. Now . . . Is some of the lyrical content problematic to my more mature ears? Of course. Thankfully, I'm very good at compartmentalizing. So I can fully enjoy the music without thinking about such things. But if someone wanted to take this album down a star or two because of it, I wouldn't fight them. That said, I've always thought Anthony Kedis is a good lyricist - not in that what he says is so profound (it's def not), but in his use of words and syllables and playing with the language around the music. And he's at his best with that on this album. I could go on, but I'll leave it there. 6/5

Absolute 5 star for me, best way to start the weekend. Love these guys it is a long set list, but outside of the closing track, which doesn’t really feel like a closing track, all the songs are really great. I couldn’t see removing any of them.

Funky mad rock I don’t think this is yet then at their peak and to be honest personally I prefer them when they become a bit more melodic rather than aggressively funky. But can you imagine being around when the Chilli’s came around.

God you forget how good these guys are. It’s heavy, it’s punky, it’s catchy, it’s sexy. It just makes you feel cool whilst you walk down the street with this in your ears. One of the rare albums that are so good that make me forget that it’s over an hour long, and actually just happy to come along for the ride. A max score is the only thing to give.

This is easily their masterpiece. Peak funkiness to rock ratio. The members of the RHCP are amazing: Chad Smith has incredible feel behind a kit, John Frusciante was born to play this style, and Flea is a beast with a bass. Then there’s Kiedis. He’s not a great singer, but what he does works on this album. He has the bravado needed to pull off Suck My Kiss, but can also be vulnerable enough for Under the Bridge. He doesn’t have the chops for a lot of the stuff on other albums, but it works here. And Rick Rubin needs credit as the fifth Pepper, because this album is beautifully produced and flows incredibly well. This album is just a beast from beginning to end with little to no filler. I have one and only one issue with it, but it’s actually a pretty big issue (for me). Lyrically, it is way too explicit/sexual. It didn’t bother me when it came out because I was a 17 year old guy. However, I’d love to share these songs with my drummer daughter because they have awesome grooves and great interplay between the bass, drums and even guitar, but I can’t listen to these lyrics with her, nor do I even want her listening to them on her own. Now that I think about it, Kiedis was the primary lyricist on this album, too, if I’m not mistaken. Ugh, every criticism I have of this album, and most of the RCHP catalog, comes back to him. So, 7/5 stars for the music, 5/5 stars for production, 2/5 stars for lyrics (even though I admittedly can still sing almost every word), 4/5 stars for vocals (on this album only). That comes out to a solid 4.5/5. For nostalgia and because the band is so disturbingly solid, I’ll have to round up. I just wish there was a censor filter I could run this through so I could enjoy it with my kid. You know, like make my own radio edits.

Total banger!

The first time I heard this album (at least some of the songs on it, I didn’t listen to the whole thing straight through for an embarrassingly long time despite owning it since I was probably in high school), I knew I was getting something special. I had never heard guitar tones like this first of all (queue under the bridge) but also I had never heard something so funky. I probably didn’t even know what funk was at the time, but I knew it blew my mind and I loved the sound. I like to think this record got me started on my fun journey discovery. Anyway this entire record is amazing from start to finish. You’re really doing yourself a disservice by skipping anything on here.

Front half is alright, back half is amazing and the album really builds into picking up the pace

The definitive RHCP album from the funk era. Nostalgia album for me

Enjoyed this one

Anything RHCP is getting 5 stars from me. I love this band. They do no wrong. (Musically)

Beautifully funky. There's few times where I love heavy bass as much as Red Hot Chili Peppers. I have absolutely no idea what they're singing about 90+% of the time, but it's still fun to listen to them, and there's so many bangers on this album: 5/5.

I like this album man

Pivotal LA rock album

I'll say here what I've said for years. I'm not a fan of RHCP. If all they made was Blood Sugar Sex Magik, I'd be a big fan of RHCP.

Probably RHCP best album. Really isn’t a bad song on there. Love Frusciante’s guitar and Flea’s base playing

increible disco, temon tras temon

30.10.25 #25 Favourite Track: 95% of all of them Rate: 9/10 I listened to the whole album so many times

The Levy RHCP.ltä. on jorattu ja mesottu disessä. Timanttia

Alright, I’m conflicted. I used to worship this record. I mean, what’s not to like? The Chili Peppers at their peak? Rick Rubin at his peak? A band that helped define the sound and culture of the 90s? I still love this motherfucker so much. Having said all of that, Anthony and Flea have shown the world that they are complete douche bags. I’m giving this album 5 stars because it deserves it but sincerely from the bottom of my heart, fuck the Chili Peppers. This is record is a fucking masterpiece.

Memorabile

Great album. Really strong variety of songs.

hella funky, raw and energetic. blood, sugar, sex and magik were definitely involved in the creation of this album

It sound hipster-ish, but I was a RHCP before they really hit the mainstream with Mother's Milk and this album (this one being the big breakout). "Under The Bridge" every 2 hours on MTV and a bunch of college girls swooning over Anthony Kiedis. Flea with the amazing bass grooves... This album is where they put it all together. Rick Rubin guided them to the flashing lights of Hollywood and fame and money. It's hard to deny that this is their best album and it's not even close. I, personally, like other albums more, but I'm not going to say this one sucks because it was popular. 5/5

Always a winning choice on this album

Always good to listen to a good album

Excellent

This was the first of at least 4 perfect albums in a row by the Chili Peppers. The funk is still here, yet the melodies are also evolving. Plus, there's a lot of hits on this.

Right into my veins

under the bridge bssm breaking the girl

On the 34th anniversary of this album, I finally listened to it, and I'm blown away by the variety, and talent throughout the whole album. I even listened to it while it was raining outside(but I wasn't naked). A masterpiece from beginning to end, and this album helped define '90s music. Favorite Track: "Under The Bridge".

Bought this album as soon as it came out in 1991, on cassette tape. One of my favorites albums of theirs.

So. Funky. My first play in the 1001 series and affirms how strong music tugs at the soul. “If you have to ask” evokes Parliament and Funkadelic. “Under the bridge” transported me right back to living in LA freshman year of college.

Classic. Totally middle school vibes. These guys are true American legends.

This album is still pretty good, even though I’ll probably not listen to it again, having heard it so many times before. Probably peak RHCP, though I’m having a hard time giving it 5 stars. I mean, I wouldn’t take it on a desert island with me, but it’s a solid album top to bottom.

So many songs to remind me of my youth 🖤

Old favourite.

One of my favourite bands. Very much in my era for music as a child. Has the mix of jazzy licks, poetic verses, and of course Flea with his guitar/ on stage presence through-out the album. The whole band is a wrecking crew for what was 90’s alternative. They are a band that has stood the test of time in the music industry. And, also in my playlist…

Well, THIS was a BIG surprise and EXACTLY why I joined the 1001 project. I have of course heard of the RHCP seeing how I don't live under a rock but outside of some of the hit singles I have not heard anything else by them. I liked the songs just fine, they were fun, and I always thought the lead singer was hella hot (I still do) but I was never motivated to but a full album by them or even to listen to one- I have no idea as to why, toss it up to one of those things, I suppose. Today, this morning (a few minutes before 6:00 AM) to be exact that all changed. When I saw that today's album was by the RHCP I wasn't too excited truth be told I let out a resigned, 'OK, then.' and pushed play with little excitement not because I hate them but because I just thought I knew what to expect. I was dead wrong! Blood Sugar Sex Magik is an exceptional album and 200+ albums in easily my favorite discovery (sorry Dexys Midnight Runners you have lost the top spot) of the 1001 project. OMG it's so good! How did it take me 23 years to hear this album? After Oasis' first two albums this is my favorite album from the 1990's, easily OK maybe I like Nirvana better. A delicious album about a lot of the best things in life, you know stuff like sex, love, magik and more sex.

Excellent album - always worth another listen. 17 tracks meant that you got real value for money back in the day where you had to pay for it and all of them are superb. "Breaking The Girl" was a track I had forgotten and one that is arguably the best on the album for me.

The combination of the band and Rick Rubin proved to be legendary. This album blurs genres. Heck it even created some.

Great album. They weren't really on my radar before this, but this album made them superstars.

One of my favorite albums ever!!

Amazing album. The band was on fire and while not my favorite peppers record, it’s definitely their best.

already owned it on CD before, such a good album, one of the best of the RHCP and arguably one of the best ever, flea's bass, Chad drums, and a mix of sad and energetic songs is just incredible

Sir psycho sexy

Funky classic

more red hot chili peppers! just like the last one this one is equally funky and fresh. a little zany too in a few different ways... it's so loose and colorful compared to their other ventures. maybe your blood sugar WILL get a little high after hearing how sickly sweet these tracks can be at points. your butthole will twitch a bit when you hear those meaty bass slaps. i also really like how each track blends into each other seamlessly. this album is sexy, it's playful, and it's really interesting from beginning to end. i REALLY enjoyed this one.

Fantastic!!!

Lite långt men när alla låtar är 5/5 vad ska man göra?

Exceptional album!

Great album start to end

I think this is a great album. Rock, Funk with a little rap vibe tossed in.

Funky, high energy and silly. The lyrics make me cringe and the vocals aren't great, but listen past that and wow the guitar, bass and drums are fantastic. The drums in particular just sound so good in the mix. I knew the hits already but The Power of Equality and Mellowship Slinky were my pick of the rest. I'm torn because my enjoyment relies on tuning out the vocals, but I can't deny I had a lot of fun listening to this.

Very hard to be objective because this is one of the biggest albums from my teenage years. Honestly, aside from wanting to dock some points for Anthony being a creep and the fucking horrible cringe lyrics on Sir Pyscho Sexy, it still holds up. It's the album where John steps out of Hillel's shadow and finds his own voice as a guitarist/artist and for that alone it's worth five stars.

I literally have a chili pepper tattooed on my butt, what do you want me to say? Five peps 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Enjoyed it more than I should have probably. Would be better with about 10 minutes of fluff cut off

Still kicks. Some of Chads best drumming ever

The first of the great RHCP albums. It was pretty long but still a blast to listen to. Many references to other musicians throughout.

It’s sensationally good.

I love RHCP. I'm not sure if I like this album or Californication the best. So this is a 5. It's not perfect. Like most early CD era album, this is too long. Cut the last 4 tracks and it would be nearly perfect. The white guy rap/rock is really dated and juvenile. This is better than most of it from the early 90s, though. So 4.5/5. Still I have to round up. I lovbass, and Flea is the best.

Great album, great band

Excellent

excellent, i already listened to it a lot, because it is one of my favourite bands of all time.

One of my favourites as an adolescent.

Probably my favorite of all RHCP. This album has so many of their gritty classics and one extraordinary pop hit (Under The Bridge). I love watching interviews from the band at this time - Frusciante absolutely loved Funky Monks 😂 Fun fact: this was released on the exact same day as Nevermind 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 BSSM has an incredible set of bonus material including early takes of Soul To Squeeze and a bunch of covers that are worth checking out. The timing for this album reminds me of quite a few we've seen so far in the rock world. A band releases an album or two that shows promise/potential and then they release something like this that rockets them into superstardom. That becomes a huge part of the future of the band and how their story played out. How people deal with chaotic fame, how great bands modify their sound (and then come back to their roots) and how bands create a new direction while maintaining mass appeal. RHCPs arc is fascinating

Så uppfinningsrik gatukorsning av genres! 5

Pivotal album. Always hits. The Chili’s are always on a level of their own for me.

I was a fairweather fan who hopped on the Chilis wagon at Californication and off again after By The Way but I definitely didn't give BSSM enough of a chance at the time. It is damn fantastic. The funk/rock/rap fusion is so effortless, it's easy to forget there was so little of this around at the time and basically none of it in the mainstream. There's such a satisfying synergy as the guitars, bass, drums and vocals all click in so many places. Time and again they seem to coalesce around the perfect note, harmony or fill and it's incredibly satisfying. The real genius here of course is Flea, one of the all-time great bass players. When he gets off the chain, he elevates the whole sound to another level. You even get the feeling here that we're still scratching the surface of his powers. In places the tracks flow seamlessly into each other to create thematic runs that keep the pulse moving and hold the attention. The opening trio showcases superb variety while clinging to a clear thread and that's before we even get into the highlight reel: Funky Monks, Suck My Kiss, Give It Away and the classic Under The Bridge to name but a few. There simply is no filler here, and they even pull off the epic experimental number in Sir Psycho Sexy before smashing it back down with They're Red Hot to ensure we don't go home feeling too highbrow. There's a reason the Chilis were so annoyingly ubiquitous in the 90s, they were at the absolute top of their game here.

One of my fav albums ever

this came out and blew everything up, I remember us losing our minds over every track! I was working at a place in Hoboken, saving $ to move to Italy full time and one of the bartenders was a drummer - Steve. We played it constantly while doing set up for dinner service : ) GREAT ALBUM - game changer!!

Another monster album from 1991 and one of my favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers records. It's an amazing collection of songs, showcasing more diversity than anything they'd done before. Could Have Lied is one of my all-time favorite tracks, that haunting Frusciante solo get's me all the time.

First 5-star album of this journey. It's banger after banger. It's been a while since I heard it, so that was fun.

OMG, I haven't listened to this in SO long. I think I wore this CD out when I was 13-14. I remember my friend's dad hearing lyrics like "sopping wet her pink umbrella" and being like "wow, that's pretty dirty..." then wandering off. Good stuff.

Here in Brazil, I grew up with an awful thing called "Funk Carioca", which is a poor and disgusting version of the real funk. But at 10 years old, I had no clue about that. I thought that funk it was just an awful and obscene kinda of music. But then one fine day I listened to a song called "Snow" and I thought "Oh nice, it has good guitars, so it's rock". Little I knew... So, like a regular teenager rock fan in the early 2010's, I found the RHCP popular songs, such as "Californication", "Can't Stop", "Otherside", "Scar Tissue"... The famous ones, right? But not much time later, I randomly discovered a song called "Mellowship Slinky in B Major" and I said "WOW"! Then I started to indulge in the RHCP discography, which introduced me to James Brown's music, and a whole Funk and disco music universe from the 70's. In my opinion, the only mistake in this album, is the large amount of songs. They could released 2 albuns out of that. But since all of them are awesome, still gets my 5 stars rate.

Classic. Definitely brings back some great memories from my teenage years. What a great time in the music scene to be growing up. This album and it’s accompanying videos left a mark on my teenage life.

This is the album that really put the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the map. The music here ranges from punk to funk to classic rock. I love the way the songs vary from track to track but still carry the Chili Peppers vibe. Rick Rubin’s production here is top notch and shows why he is one of the best music producers around. Lyrics range from serious to fun. I don’t know if I appreciated it the same when it came out but at my current age, I enjoyed every song on this album. If had to narrow it down, I would say favorites are “The Power of Equality”, “Breaking The Girl”, “Suck My Kiss”, “Sir Psycho Sexy” (that bass line rocks)

Let’s go

Another classic coming in hot this week! Probably my second favorite RHCP album, and probably the one with the most songs people know. For me, any time Under The Bridge, I poorly sing along. Just one of those songs that stuck with me forever.

Très bon à reecouter

Epic album 5 star for sure

This is probably my favorite album on this whole list. One of the first four CDs I ever got in the mail back in the early 90s (BMG or Columbia House!). Incredible start to finish. A masterpiece to these ears. I don't even remember liking it as much back in the day.

A real classic and blast from the past for this elder millenial.

Love this album, all bangers

Easy 5 for me. Big hits, awesome deep cuts. Funky, groovy, wacky, quirky, crazy, wavy, flea is sexy? Can I join the band for my lyrical talent now? Wong ding dong dong ding dang. Drugs.

Listens: Dozens Standout tracks: Under The Bridge, Apache Rose Peacock, I Could Have Lied, others. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were one of the first bands I really recall experiencing on my own volition. Before that, it would be listening to classic rock and pop on the radio with my parents. Granted I started out with By The Way in the 2000s; I then quickly moved on to Californication and then eventually Blood Sugar Sex Magik (and beyond). This album has the right amount bass, funky beats, good lyrics, explicit content and highly memorable songs and melodies on it. It's not a 5, but it's still excellent. It actually is a 5 for me on the scale of Hate it to Love it. I am revamping my scale. I can't be so stingy when it comes to rating music I actually thoroughly enjoy.

Excellent

Blood sugar sex magik - red hot chili peppers This is one of those ones I've had to separate the art from the artist. As a 12 year old, this was my favourite artist, and this is probably one of my most listened to albums of all time. However, as I got older I realised how atrocious of a human being Anthony was. Then it gets to the point where some of the lyrics on the album are likely influenced by some pretty heinous shit and it completely changes how you look at them. That said, I do think this is a really fantastic album. I think the two big singles; under the bridge and give it away are absolutely classics. The other singles Breaking the Girl, Suck my Kiss and If You Have to Ask are great. Most of the album tracks (with the exception of The Greeting song and maybe naked in the rain) are superb, I Could Have Lied and My Lovely man in particular So I'll go with a 5 but its a dated 5 with the knowledge that the lead single is a sex offender

One of my favorite albums of all time!

A little bit ago, I said that a few specific artists are just going to get 5 stars automatically. Ladies and Gentlemen, Red Hot Chili Peppers. I love this band, and I love this album. I can't believe how many of their classics are on this album specifically. I often overlook this album when I'm listening to the Peppers, I am no longer going to overlook this album when I'm listening to the Peppers. Is "Under the Bridge" the best song on this album? I don't know. Depends on the day. They're all good.

oml i love this album

Great album. Quintessential 90s. I would rank Californication about this album as my favorite RHCP album, but it's close. Also Under the Bridge is untouchable.

One of my all time favorite albums

Not their best, but still an absolute banger!

I absolutely loved that one. It's very original. By the way, I like the cover, we have the impression that it's the same guy's face turned upside down on both sides and also below but if you look closer, you can see they're different. So you make a conclusion that it's a band group of four persons. I consider the album to be a mix of Hip hop and psychedelic rock. Loved it.

I already know this album is amazing

The Good: 4-words make up the band name, and the album name! The Bad: Trying to decipher the meaning of the album title without reading the wiki page… The Ugly: Finding out that the album title is but a rouse… Back in the days when I was a younger me, and when one actually had a “record” collection, actually heading out and buying an album was a normal thing. RHCP did not fit in my record collection in the ‘80s, though I was made aware of them by a friend of mine, and it wasn’t till this “album” “dropped” in the early ‘90s that I, along with thousands of others, started paying attention to RHCP. I was in college, and another buddy of mine had bought the CD, and we would play this album start to finish daily, multiple times on the weekend, it was the soundtrack for 1992 I guess you could say. And 1992 was a good year for me… Then, as life moves on, one stops listening to one album, and one startsm listening to other albums, and maybe other genres, and one forgets about certain albums. About a year or two ago, prior to me starting this little 1001 experiment, I bumped into “Under The Bridge” on a auto generated playlist, and decided to give the album a whirl… and truth be told, I can’t recall the experience being special… Yesterday, when this iconic album cover greeted me in the morning, I wasn’t sure what to think… and then I played the album, and I found myself sitting in my buddies car, while driving around time, talking about stupid shit that youthful people talk about, and a massive smile crossed my face. Blood Sugar Sex Magik isn’t the greatest album in the world, however, it marked the early ‘90s, it put RHCP on the map, for better or for worse, and I have played it 3 times already today! 5* (upgraded from 4 1/2*)

very fun, lots of funky bass, some really solid songs. Excellent in the IEMs

Not my most favourite of RHCP albums, but great nonetheless.

One of my favs

Funky music that can never be topped. Holds one of the songs known around the world.

Amazing album. Big influence for me.

Absolute classic

A classic. Arguably the best RHCP work, I’ve listened to this more times start to finish than I can count.

LOVE IT!

Own it, great album!

A personal favourite!

Giving it a 5 for Seb. 💜

The album the propelled RHCP to stardom. A great mix of funk, rock, and metal.

🩸🍩👨‍❤️‍💋👄✨🪄 Flea is a fucking badass

They have anything I want and everything I need. A true pleasure to listen to

Definitely more punky, not as good as Californication in my opinion, but still a fantastic album and an inspiration for 90s sound

I can't not give this 5 stars as this is one of THEE formative albums of teenage years and all of the Frusciante-era Chili Peppers music still inspires (or rather dictates) my songwriting and playing today. It's long (apologies to any RHCP haters, but at least it's not Stadium Arcadium), but every song has its place and rates between great and perfect. Sir Psycho Sexy becomes tiresome until the great instrumental that takes up a huge chunk of it, but that barely makes a dent in the overall quality of this album. You could also criticise Keidis' lyrics, but the songs have clear personal meaning before he goes full-on "binga bong bangifornia" in the later years. The musicianship is impeccable throughout, I'm not sure that the sheer musical chemistry that this outfit had throughout this era up until Stadium Arcadium has ever been beaten.

*obligatory comment dunking on Keidis* This rules, lots of long form songs that just keep evolving over time that feel like the kind of thing that would usually be reserved for a life show. Long album, but absolutely worth it all the way through. I’m only slightly embarrassed by how frequently I changed my gait while listening to this album while walking around - at least for the most part I was between parliament & St James via meadowbank. I blame flea.

I remember liking this album less, which is a very backhanded compliment but I'm more used to later Chilis and my most listened to album by them is either By The Way or Stadium Arcadium from their less funky times. I'm not gonna pretend all the songs hit and this is more of a 4.5 but damn this just one of the albums that I can always chuck on. I do often wonder (often during some insane scatting or when Keidis gives up on actual words) what the band would be like with a different frontman but I suppose the spirit of Funk is there in inane sounds and groovy beats. Highlight: Funky Monks

I loved how funky it was and his vocals are nice. I really enjoyed the bass in these songs. There was not a song I didn't like off the album. Only complaint is how long is was but that's about it. Bopped to every song nonetheless!

Funky, rocky, fucked-up fun. What's not to love? Five stars and it's going in my Tidal library

I did not use a private spotify session for this one. This album was the soundtrack to my sophomore year in college and will always have a special place in my heart, despite loathing the last few RHCP albums and finding out what type of person Anthony is. I really appreciated how after "Mother's Milk" the band could have gone mainstream and mellow, but instead came out with "Give it Away". As an older man, some of the lyrics seem overly sexual and sophomoric, but hey, I was a sophomore when this album came out.

5 estrelas o melhor RHCP

I must say, I had all but written off the chili peppers. New music sucks. Listened back to By The Way and found it middling. Even older music is just embarrassing But this album still slaps.

Classic. Perfection

There is some filler on this album for sure, but there is also so many great songs on this album that I just can't give it anything less than a 5. Great fucking album!

I struggle with RHCP. Are they a GOOD band? Are they a GREAT band? A novelty band? Silly, stupid, ridiculous? Whatever they are iI can't deny how good THIS album is. The continuous nature of it makes me want to hear every song. My favorite song is The Greeting Song. It was all I could do to sit through Under The Bridge. I legit never want to hear that song ever again. But there's a difference between never wanting to hear a song again, and never wanting to hear it in the first place.

Punk lives

Absolute masterpiece

Amazing album loved every second of it. Great sound!

Didn't really know this album, but I think it deserves a place in the 1001 best albums. Vocals and instrumentation groundbreaking.

Poco da dire, molto RHCP, ma senza attorcigliarsi su sé stesso e le canzoni sono belle. Poi con 'Under the bridge'...

Great mixing. Vibe. Absolute cinema.

I can't fault this album. 17 tracks of high-octane alt rock and there is barely a weak song on it. Plus all of the singles are nailed-on classics that I'll never get tired of

Arguably the best album RHCP ever recorded. I've loved it since my first listen back in 1991, and still know every word to every song. Flea's funky basslines mix with the emotions Frusciante pours into his riffs, and the cumulative effect is undeniable. Chad Smith brings the beats, and Kiedis is on fire, dropping rhymes and imbuing the softer songs with soul. Best of all, the whole album just flows smoothly from beginning to end. This lineup of the band remains the best, and I'm forever thankful this album exists.

Fucking classic

So here’s the thing. This was MY band for half my life. The Chilis and Sublime all day, everyday, living, breathing them. Up until the last few weeks it’s been probably 2/3 years since I listened to a single song. I’ve always tried to live my morals and I genuinely try to not support or endorse people or companies that I think have done bad things. It’s why I vote blue and went vegan/vegetarian and it’s why I stopped listening to artists I loved like Kanye. It’s why I prayed every night and always tried to be a good person in my own way. I feel compelled to do something at all times on the moral front, even and almost especially if it’s imperceptible. I’ve read Scar Tissue probably 5 times, and I’ve listened to every album pre 2020 probably a dozen times each. Musically they are and will forever be Zeus in my pantheon. Frusciante is the best guitarist I have ever heard, as is Flea on bass. Chad rocks. I’ve always loved Keidis’ poetry and lyrics, but I took a hiatus because I realized that hey maybe that story in his memoir about banging a 14/15 year old should be taken more seriously. So I blacklisted him and by extension the Chilis. ‘Twas a dark day indeed my friends. Like I said, it’s been about 2/3 years and for a variety of reasons, this album project included, I’ve been deeply considering a lot about my view of the world and by extension how I should operate within it, and in the scope of this album specifically how I should go about judging Keidis for something that I believe is way over the line. With his own fucked up history with sex and inappropriate age gaps (if you don’t know he lost his virginity at age 12 by his dad’s gf in a “throw the kid a bone” type deal. There were other weird ass stories that just feel very LA in the 70’s as well) I often wonder if I’m too harsh on him having this relationship when he was about 18/19. I don’t think I am but I also have to consider the cycle of things. At this point in my life and moral journey I’m trying to focus on the here and now because litigating the past sucks and it’s a constant uphill battle with little to no pay off or sense of justice. It’s important to me that you guys all know this because I can’t understate how much this band has meant to me throughout my life. My best friend of 25 years couldn’t be bothered to get his shit together enough to come to my wedding, but when I listen to My Lovely Man it’s him still in my heart. Sir Psycho Sexy is the track I fucking nailed while playing Rock Band with my brother and friends. Under the Bridge is the first time I really, really tried and learned a song that was way above my skills on the guitar. Like, genuinely proud of myself. All of my teen and young adult angst and creativeness and passion can be linked at some point to this band and this album. I guess I should wrap this up. I own it on vinyl and CD, had 13 songs already liked an on playlists, I’ve seen the doc, I’ve read Scar Tissue and am just now remembering I bought Acid for the Children and need to read it (Flea’s memoir) and would that I had had $150 in highschool without a gf to spend it on I would have a Chili asterisk tattoo with a lyric from Scar Tissue somewhere on my body. Anyways, thanks for letting me be part of this so I can just get that all off my chest at least once in my life. Told y’all it was going to be an essay.

this album, for probably about 20 years or so, has been my favorite RHCP album. back in high school, i was in a band with some buddies and was doing some really deep dives into various bands and artists. For RHCP, I read Anthony Kiedis' book, 'Scar Tissue, listened to their whole discography at the time, and watched the Funky Monks documentary. this album is just special to me. obvious hits include Under the Bridge, Suck My Kiss, Breaking the Girl, and Give it Away, showing their maturation as a band and Kiedis' writing ability, as well as their ability to mesh with John Frusciante. Personal favorites include Apache Rose Peacock, Sir Psycho Sexy, and the ultimate track in my opinion, Funky Monks. These songs blend the funk/rock sound so well and just ooze charisma. this album will probably remain my favorite RHCP album of all time, and it gets an easy 5 stars from me.

There’s so much going on with this album. RHCP’s and Anthony’s typical love for LA, Frusciante being a wizard, and Flea and Chad Smith laying down the rhythm. There’s six songs on this album that I really enjoy, and the rest of the album is a solid listen. My only complaint is that it’s a little long and there’s not a lot that’s memorable after Under the Bridge, but still worthy of five stars in my book (also leaning towards five to dethrone Kanye as my top artist).

My favorite record of all. Perfect.

I know and love this album. 5*.

This is peak Funk-era RHCP. I happen to like some of their later stuff too, but if you are if the "I prefer old-school chilis" type, then this is probably the album you're thinking of

Honestly just an all around banger. I loved it so much

How do I not own this record yet? This was a force when it was released and developed a change in sound along with the band writing songs that were far more personal (Under the Bridge). If you like funky rock, this is a good one. Favorite under-rated song: Breaking the Girl.

It’s fair to say that this album helped explode alternative rock into the mainstream of American popular music. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-blood-sugar-sex-magik?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

RHCP does not disappoint! Saw them this summer. They've still got it. Great album. Listen to it every few years.

90% Best (Favorites in this case): The Power of Equality; If You Have To Ask; Funky Monks; Mellowship Slinky in B Major; Apache Rose Peacock; My Lovely Man; Sir Psycho Sexy Must-Hear? Yes

Rating: 10/10 One of my favorite albums of all time. So funky and fun to listen to from start to finish. Would cut the last two songs but besides that a consistently excellent album, definitely the band's strongest release.

classic remember where i was the 1st time i heard it

Great album, one of their best. From that magical time in 1991.

Classic, absolute awesomeness.

Classic Funk Metal album - a Real sign of the times.

I have argued for a long time that this is one of the greatest albums of the 90s and definitely the best chilli peppers album. It seems in fashion now to dismiss the chilli peppers but when this was released it was fresh. Messy, and exciting- each song full of energy. The songs were all so different- I could have lied is so different from suck my kiss. And the title track still sound phenomenal. A band that were at their peak and who had found a perfect blend of punk, funk, and melodies. A solid 5.

I remember walking to The Warehouse after school the day the album came out to buy it, and I remember recording an interview with a couple members before that so I could listen to some songs before the album dropped. 14 year old me loved RHCP more than any other band. When it dropped I loved this album, and continued to loved for many years. As time went on, though, I became increasingly dissatisfied with RHCP, their sound, direction, energy, etc. I longed for rawer heavier feel of Uplift Mofo, Mother's Milk, and BSSM. One Hot Minute and Californication had moments I truly loved, but overall they felt weak and limp by comparison. I found some of their later stuff hardly listenable. I began to blame BSSM in my mind as the tuning point, the moment when they found their full artistic voice, pointing the way to the pandering softness to come, reaching to recreate the magic of Under the Bridge and Give it Away forever more. They'd sold out as far as I was concerned. None of that was fair or real, but that's what was in my head all the way up to this listen. I probably haven't listened closely to this album in at least a decade, maybe longer. It's brilliant. I'm right back to where I was in the beginning with it. There are maybe a couple throw away songs for me, but it's a fantastic album with a nearly perfect flow and cadence Even the weakest songs, The Power of Equality and Naked in the Rain serve their purpose. I love the feel, the production, the musicianship, the variety, the creativity, and the guts. This might be one of my very favorite albums of the 90s. I came into this album distant and jaded, expecting I might give this 3 stars. I listened with open ears and heart, and it has to be 5.

Amazing album - been too long

A real soundtrack to my teenage years. Funnily fell out of love with the Chili's after Californication around Stadium Arcadium but rediscovered and reloved. Powerhouse performances and a flawless record

You're all sick, this is 5/5.. I know what you're smoking

I'd fallen out of love with these guys but after listening to this album I've gone back to loving them again. The Power of Equality starts it off extremely well, and the one-two combo of the title track and Under the Bridge is absolutely sublime Anthony's vocals are amazing, bass is super punchy, catchy riffs. Best album I've had so far Sidenote: This is my 20th album and my first 5 star worthy album - that does not bode well. I'm either really unlucky, or I'm in for a long three years

This album brings back so many memories but they all mesh together except one. I still can’t fully listen to I Could Have Lied due to that song being on when i found out a guy from my grade got hit by a car and died. It’s just too much. I was a fan of the Chili’s back when Mothers Milk came out but this catapulted them into the stratosphere for quite some time. It’s funky but not completely out there. Under the Bridge is a top notch slow song, so is Breaking the Girl. The big hits were big for them. You have to know at least one song from this album. I guarantee this is an album that every listener at least likes. It doesn’t disappoint. Choice cut: Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Pepperssssss💞💞

Easiest review of my life. This album has been the solidification of my love for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I fell in love with their loose musical style during their Stadium Arcadium age. I have since then come to enjoy every album in their own right and love this one for its passion and energy. It knows how to reel you in, smack you in the face, take you for a spin and hype you up. Two of my personal favorites are Suck My Kiss and If You Have to Ask. I Could Have Lied has a special place in my heart because of the drastic switch in tone it has on the album.

A classic.

Favorite Band

One of the albums from my youth that helped shape my taste in music. I can’t believe I didn’t wear this tape out.

This record is magnificent. You understand why everybody loves RHCP. Band is tight. Flea and Chad Smith are a one-of-a-kind duo. Add John Frusciante to that and you get this. Outstanding. Straight grooves.
