The peak of the chili peppers

I don't know - this album just struck me as really good - and I enjoyed it so much when I owned the CD. I must have over listened to it at the time. Sure it's not a classic, but I was so happy to hear many of these songs again.

Love 90's music and this album kicked that decade off with a bang!

Sir Psycho Sexy can suck my kiss!! This came out my senior year and yes some of these songs are over played but still just goood old nostalgia!!

banger album and i like a lot of the songs on it it just gets like really weird at the end and its def too long but the first 12 songs are glorious

Even if the only songs on this were 'Breaking the Girl', 'Under the Bridge', and 'Guve It Away', it would be five stars all day long.

Fantastic, a classic!

My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE ALBUM of all time!(besides Mezannine) I know I haven't been rating much lately, but I just can't not rate this one since it finally came up. Might as well start rating again, why not.

I could write for days about how many times I've listened to the record on repeat as an 11yo. This was in my opinion the steep peak of RHCP decending into One Hot Minute and plummeting into pop rock drivle.

I get now why RHCP's music is one of the greatest. What a head banger all throughout!

banger

Fun album from start to finish. no boring moment in a 1hr 15min album. Favorite track: breaking the girl other picks: give it away, under the bridge, my lovely man

Killer album combining high-energy punk with funk.

I wonder what it would be like to hear this for the first time in 1991. Part P-Funk, part Hendrix, part Hip-hop and more, the chili peppers finally made some unequivocally great music with this album. The entire band shines here on tracks ranging in dynamics, genre, and tone. My favorites are "I could have lied" and the title track, but my God are the hits good songs. "Give it Away" and "Under the Bridge" are both iconic and exciting to hear every time I listen. One of my first favorite bands.

Nik Radmore introduced me to this and it changed my musical world! This melodic and arrogant funk rock mix was an elixir to 15-year-old me. It still holds strong today (the bass and guitar lines are amazing), though it does sometimes feel quite juvenile and pretentious. In my old age I find the slower acoustic-driven songs more palatable. Highlights: Sir Psycho Sexy Under the bridge I could have lied. Funky monks

Took me a little while to get into this band but quite like them now. Very distinctive sound. Like the lazy vocals which also has an energy too. Good listen

This my favorite Chili Peppers album. Sadly, when I saw them in concert in 2022, they only played " Give It Away" and "Under the Bridge" which is a crime. "Suck My Kiss" and "Breaking the Girl" are awesome songs too! Plus the rest of the album is funky, sexy, horny, jamming, and fun. This is definitely peak RHCP. This one will always be one of my faves.

This is easily the Chili Peppers' masterpiece. There's so much going on here, with the band breaking from their heavy metal style and hugely expanding the number of genres in their music. They had the freedom to experiment here, the respect for the music to play fewer notes which gave the music room to breath, and the maturity to understand how to structure a great album. Rick Rubin's production elevated them to a different plane. John Frusciante demonstrated his excellence at songwriting. All of the pieces just fit here to create one of the most iconic albums of the 90s. Two criticisms: Anthony Keidis trying to sell himself as a sex god is fairly toxic, though he at least acknowledges this with 'Breaking the Girl'. Also, the album is longer than it needs to be, a trend of the early days of CDs when everyone felt like they had to fill the entire length of the disc. This would have been a tighter album if they'd cut some of the weaker tracks. Fortunately it's still a strong album overall.

Own a copy of this, I think it's their best album.

yep that’s rhcp

This was expected to be on the list and it was great to listen through this album again! They‘ve created a unique sound, while not being famous yes, let alone the amazing bass lines, that I need to give this one 5 stars. PS: I just got this one after the Paris Olympics 2024 ending show, with a short performance by the RHCP, because the Olympics 2028 will be in Los Angeles. When I‘m done with this project it will only be 1 year left - nice!

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is filled with great track after great track from Breaking The Girl, Suck My Kiss, I Could Have Lied, Give It Away, Under The Bridge, and my newfound favorite Castles Made of Sand. I would go out of my way to buy this in vinyl.

So I have listened to this album many times and recently before being given it by the generator! It’s their magnum opus. Their most raw and natural record to date. Before they became mainstay pop acts but we’re confident enough in their musicianship and comradery as a band to churn out a wild collection of funk rock tunes. I’m not the hugest chilli peppers fan but this album is pretty rock solid front to back. Noisy unruly and impossible to contain (also heavy drug is most likely). It’s a really fun listen and it see the chilli peppers stretching the “funk” genre as far into their demented world as possible!

Sweet 90s rock

I listened to this so many times as a teenager and it means something different to me, that I don’t think I can rate it anything other than a 5 (although it’s not really)

This was a record from my youth. I know this one inside out at backwards. For me this is a sum is greater than its parts type record. I think it all comes together in such a great way. It takes you on a journey through different sounds and stories. Funny I don’t really listen to anything from them that came after this. But for this moment I thought they were amazing.

Greatest

A few highlights but endless bass noodling....

It’s interesting that this band found stratospheric success considering their sound is so weird. I used to listen to this album a lot and it was easily my favourite by the band. The ones before it were a bit to 80s sound for me, and the later ones went a bit stadium/soft rock. It’s undeniable that musically, flea/john/chad were on another level during this era. I love how Fruciante switches from restrained funk to wild solos, and flea’s basslines are legendary. John really is an underrated player. Kiedis is basically a hype man for this band, I feel like the lyrics don’t really matter but he crosses the line too many times. Sir psycho sexy is particularly bad, he clearly has some weird fucked up relationship with sex. There are some moments when he surprises everyone with something heartfelt though, I.e. under the bridge. I liked this album a lot as a teenager and then turned my back on rhcp in my 20s as they made me cringe. Listening again now I think this album holds up really well and I enjoyed it a lot.

The best Chili Peppers album. Period. Liked songs added: - The Power Of The Equality - Suck My Kiss - I Could Have Lied - Mellowship Slinky In B Major - Give It Away Now - Under The Bridge - Naked In The Rain

top 10 album of all time for me

A solid album front to back. I feel even the non-singles would have tore up the alternative radio in the early 90's. This catapulted the Chili Peppers to a superstardom that is still with us today. On a side note, this is like, the 8th album on the list that was produced by Rick Rubin. What an enigmatic figure in music history he is. Check out his list on wikipedia, it's exhaustive: Every RHCP album starting with this one, Adele's 21, even every Slayer album. The guy started Def Jam records! Anyways RHCP really ruled from 1991-2004ish and this is no exception.

Amazing album. Flow is great throughout.

Such a fun and dynamic album. I must've listened to this on CD a thousand times. Great mix of funk, rock, rap, etc. I never quite got the hate that Keidis gets. His singing isn't that bad (even if he can't compare to Mike Patton), and he doesn't sound off key to me. Of course, he's strongest when he's doing a funk-rap combo. Then, of course, there's Flea, John, and Chad, a pretty unbeatable rhythm section. Some people also complain that the album is too long, but to me all the songs are sufficiently different and good that it's not a problem. I'd drop a half star just on the lyrical content, which is as juvenile today as it ever was. But... it's literally in the title, so I can't complain too much.

Perfect klus-plaatje. Van funky naar rauw (bijna Rage Against The Machine achtig zelfs).

Easy 5.

Timing is everything, and this one crushed the start. Yes, the hits are obvious, and at this point, overplayed. But it’s the rest of their work that makes it a classic. I’ve moved on from these guys, and that rowdy stupid spot in life… but it was a fucking blast cranking this in the 90’s and living life large. Still a classic. Smiles.

One of my fav from the alternative 1990s scene ❤️

Still remember getting the CD and trying to work out what couple of tracks we would rip to 8-track for the rest of the station to play. Think I ended up donating my CD for a couple of weeks for everyone to play. Such a great album. So glad I never got that wrapped up in it to get the tats though. 5.5

Kiedis can be cringey but I would listen to an 8 year old singing songs about Fortnite if John Frusciante played guitar on the track. This album has a nice blend of galloping funk riffs and the beginnings of virtuosic solo ability he would become renowned for when he returned to the band for Californication and beyond.

Bangers, need more funk in the newer Peppers

love this album--I bought it when it first came out and it still sounds great. Their funky rock works throughout and their bass player is amazing, in addition to Keidis (sp?) great vocals.

Epic memories of youth gone by.

Birthday album (9/23/91)

Funtàstic

How many 100 hours of listening have I put into this one?!?!? Who hasn't? What an amazing album, and I say that from someone who is a RHCP OG, not an RHCP BSSM hipster forward. This is an amazing album. Came out the same day as Nirvana's "Nevermind" - isn't that amazing! This rivals that album in greatest. Truly a 5 star album if there has ever been one.

Excellent, excellent album. RHCP are an unpredictable band, or at least were in this era, and this album is perhaps the best example they produced of this. You get shades of grunge, shades of funk, shades of blues, shades of alt rock, even a bit of country rock in a couple of places. Under the Bridge is the viral track from this, but the whole album is incredible.

Old school funky

I actually really enjoyed this album and would listen again. Albeit, it all kinda sounds the same? Not in a bad way, just can’t pick a. Favorite song cause it’s all one good vibe.

So sexy

Classic that I of course remember from when it first came out in that magical summer of 1991. Great flow, funky bass lines and a few bangers.

This has always been such a great album. I love RHCP. Such a unique sound, and iconic of that time in music history.

I saw them on this tour. It was a kickass live show and the album stands. Every song is solid. And having seen the energy they brought-- in an era before auto-tune, I can say it is a favorite album still just for the memories.

Yeah, the lyrics could be deeper, but dang this is still a perfect encapsulation of the moment.

Klasse Album. Tolle Musik. Viel Abwechslung.

The lyrics vary from juvenile 'sex-is-great' ramblings to the powerfully confessional 'Under the Bridge'. Musically, John Frusciante, Flea and Chad Smith gelled beautiful on this album and it's a pleasure to hear them at work here.

Holyyy fuuuck

- In meinen Augen haben RHCP drei Alben, denen ich 10/10 geben würde: Californication, By The Way und Stadium Arcadium. Blood, Sugar, Sex Magic kommt direkt danach! Rating: 4,75-5/5

This album is a fully functioning time machine. Loved going back!

It kind of peters off at the end but what it still had was great.

GOATED MUSIC

RHCP at one of their many peaks. Goofy, but still funky as hell.

Yeah, that’s a 5. There are a few lulls of “that’s just OK,” and two specifically weak tracks to me: Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and Sir Psycho Sexy (but only for its lyrics, because the instrumental is fabulous). The rest of the album, however, just really fucking clicked for me. I do think some of those “just OK” tracks could’ve been cut to shorten the runtime down a bit, but there’s just a lot of energy and charm oozing off of this album, man. I think my favorite was probably The Righteous & the Wicked, but about 12 (13 if you count me laughing my ass off at the absurdity of the last track) of these songs were SO good. Just a banger of an album to me, easily deserving of a 5, and one of the more fun ones we’ve gotten overall. I really enjoyed it.

5/5 - a classic

lon lon lon long time agooo

"Blood Sugar Sex Magik" by Red Hot Chili Peppers is a timeless masterpiece that seamlessly blends funk, rock, and punk into a vibrant and eclectic musical experience. Released in 1991, this album solidified the Chili Peppers' status as one of the most innovative and influential bands of their generation. From the infectious energy of "Give It Away" to the soulful introspection of "Under the Bridge," each track on "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" is a testament to the band's musical prowess and lyrical depth. The album's raw honesty and emotional intensity resonate with listeners, making it a standout in the alternative rock genre. One of the album's greatest strengths is its versatility. Whether you're in the mood for funky grooves or introspective ballads, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" delivers. The band's chemistry is palpable, with each member contributing their unique talents to create a cohesive and unforgettable sonic journey. In addition to its musical brilliance, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" also boasts iconic cover art and production by Rick Rubin, further adding to its legendary status. Overall, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" is a groundbreaking album that continues to captivate audiences decades after its release. Its blend of raw energy, introspective lyricism, and genre-defying sound make it a timeless classic.

Formative album for me - sure, the lyrics are beyond ridiculous, but how can you resist the funk? One from my teens that I still get stuck on again every now and then.

Classic record.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. The music, the funkiness, the magic of Flea, Frusciante, and Smith bringing the energy to elevate Kiedis is amazing. While Sir Psycho Sexy is one of my least favorite Chili's tracks, the rest of this album is just a gem. 5/5!

This album definitely holds up! Just as good today as when it was originally released!

Classic

Amazing!

Unbelievable album from a bunch of genius loonies!

I've never been a big RHCP fan. I enjoy their songs and think they're talented, but I've just always found the music to be a little too one-noted. Anthony Kedis vocals seem to dominate the sound and Flea (who is one of if no the greatest bassists of all time) goes hard, while John Frusciante plays riffs that oscillate between tinny, high-treble sound to wah-wah heavy funk, and Chad Smith goes ham on the cymbals. Rinse and repeat. But after giving Blood Sugar Sex Magik a real, solid, critical listen I feel I couldn't be any further from that opinion than I am. This album has such a great variety of sound and themes including some of the greatest and most well-known RHCP songs. The funny part is that I'd say those mega popular songs ("Under the Bridge", "Give It Away Now", etc.) are not the strongest songs of the album. I like "I Could Have Lied" a lot and "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" was a funky, weird song. Giving this a real listen has definitely changed my opinion of the band

An album that really defined a band for a generation. I don’t remember when this album was released since I was too young but even their later albums just oozed 90s vibe. Not my favorite band but an amazingly talented group.

(1001: 83/1001 and I think this may be the 4th album I've owned on the list) Has been a while since I listened to the full album. It's got some funkiness I forgot about, and I've been listening to more Mike Patton and really see more similarities than I expected. All of the are good things by the way Another fun bit about listening to this again after having played the run of Rock Band and Guitar Hero games is that I notice Bass and drums a lot more now and Flea's bass is always wild. If you're mostly familiar with the singles, the other tracks may be a little surprising lyrically,or not. The style of the singles vs the others is almost like a different band. It is really tough to pick a favorite here as there are at least 5 contenders, which means 5/5 Favorite track "Give it away" 5/5

Graag gedaan. Een 5 ondanks dat ik Californication, By The Way en zelfs Stadium Arcadium liever aanzet.

Epic funk rock Some songs have bad lyrics But Epic funk rock

Brings me back to being 21, college done but no job yet, hanging out in the summer with my college friends, hadn't yet met my wife nevermind thought about kids or life or what I’d be doing in my 50s.. I’ve listened to this a ton but it’s been a while. It’s even better than I remember.

I was 21 when this record came out. It was in constant rotation. Revisiting this album 30 years later it hasn’t really aged well. A little too bloated and a lot too cringey. they probably deserve a five but I’m gonna let my 21 year old self review it. That kid thinks it’s a five.

Hot tamales and they’re red hot yeeeeeeah she got em for sale

10/10 it all slaps

Banger alert. My favorite RHCP album, it's got some of their best hits but it also has that funky sound that was perfect for the band at the time. There are bigger mainstream successes for them but this is their masterpiece. 10/10

What a banger. Funky, aggressive, raw, and creative. His all the right chords.

Give it away now

Great memories with this album.

I bought this CD when it came out. Over 30 years later, getting to listen to it is a treat and extremely nostalgic. I’m right back in college at house parties.

One of my favourite albums.

Sweet bass

Hell, yeah, this was epic! One of my all-time favorites.

I have loved this album since it was released.

womit alles begann (bei mir). Forever 10 stars

Iconic. This is what being young and free sounds like.

So good. The drum sound alone on this album - *chef's kiss*.

Great album, possibly the best early 90’s LA album

No tamal, red hot es bien, californication mejor

Great chili peppers

I have heard this album was explicit. Definitely not for younger listeners, unless you want to explain some of the terms. I do enjoy the leads voice, and tone. There is a range there, but there is also a certain monotone in some songs. Definitely a passionate album. This whole album has energy and vitality that distinguishes it from other artists. I can't judge properly, but I think there is an authenticity that resonates from the lyrics and stark sounds. I would listen to this again. It isn't a style I would listen to regularly, nor do I identify the different personas that exist within the songs, but I enjoy the unique sound and rhythm that is in this collection.

Super funky 90s

Eine der grössten Bands ever! Schnell, direkt, funky. Und das Schlagzeug als vollwertiges Instrument. Coole Klassiker mit Give it away und Under the Bridge.

I could go the rest of my life without hearing Under the Bridge or Give It Away again, yet the rest of the album still soars.

I played a hole in this tape when I was about 16

Didn't realize how many hits were on this album. Pretty funky too.

A 5 just for the pure singability of this fine album. I actually feel a bit dirty because I gave A Night at the Opera a 4 yesterday...

Hard to separate my nostalgia from any actual critique of this album. It was one of my top 5 albums growing up and had a huge influence on me, musically. So I gotta give it the highest rating.

Heeel chill album! Love it Would buy (op m'n wishlist gezet)

You tit

Fantastic stuff. Haven't listened to the whole record before, just the major hits, but this is just great all around. Recording is solid and hits hard, great drum sound. If there's anything that would put me off just slightly, it's the lyrics which come across as kinda crass. But hey, I'll take it.

Looks tonguey👅

What a pinnacle album in the personal history of Jason Schweizer. This album was among those first albums that I purchased myself and represented the divergence from just listening to what my parents did to forging my own musical taste. Replaying it, it’s easy to forget how good the early RHCP albums were. I find most of their recent music to be good, but forgettable. This album checks all the boxes.

Awesome

Close to a four but they covered my favourite hendrix song so they deserve 5 :)

This was not a new album for me. I listened to it a lot when it came out in the early 1990s. I still have my original CD. However, it's been a while and it was fun to hear it again.

pretty gud 👌

Alltime Classic

Classic. 5 stars

It's an easy 5/5 for me. I had this one on cassette. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is leaning more towards their iconic Californication sound on some tracks while still keeping the funky tunes from previous albums.

There are a couple that haven’t aged well, but I still find myself enjoying them. The rest of this album is incredible.

The best

One of the best

Tolles Album!

Hah, I already know this album well, IT'S AWESOME.

This may be the RHCPs at their best. This Rick Rubin-produced, 17 track effort established the band as an internationally known act. Their punk inspired funk flourished under Rubin's guidance. He has produced many of their subsequent albums. RHCP's history with Parliment and George Clinton is evident in their sound - especially "Sir Psycho Sexy." This album was central to the sound of 90's popular music, and established RHCPs as an influential band in American music.

Total banger

funky. very funky. quite melodic in parts with some interesting harmonies. lyrics make negative sense. trying to understand, much less make out what kiedis is singing is an achual work out, i am burning calories.

RHCP foundation

What an album, potentially thebest RHCP album out there. It definitely has some of if not my favourite RHCP songs on it. Very typical RHCP, vocal tones and inflection of Anthony are what youd expect, fun funky bass lines from Flea, Chad killing it on the drums and Frusciante doing he's weirs guitar stuff. Some of the guitar tones on this are crazy in that in isolation they'd sound terrible but they work so well in the context of the songs. Great band and great album.

Have loved this since first listen in 1991

EXACTLY what i was looking for. kinda reminds me of bestie boys, same era. they explore so many dif styles tho i love it

Classic rock album; grew up with this california-inspired sound. Clear funk influences.

This is the album that, for me, established them as one of the greatest rock bands to emerge from the 90s. A continuation of that funky style they established in their earlier albums which solidified into this incredible album with so many iconic songs. I could give the album 4 stars if the only song on it was "Under the bridge", but there are so many incredible tracks like "Breaking the girl", "Give it away", "Suck my Kiss", "I could have lied". It's an incredible album from an incredible era in music.

This album is flawless. No skips. It’s the best lineup of the band and they’re most robust and masterful imo. Everyone brought the heat. If you have to listen to one RHCP record, make it this one. The tracks flow so well together. The peaks and valleys of it all. It’s banger after banger after banger

Great album. I find it hard to believe that Kedis was on heroin during this period. No one is that horny on heroin.

One I’ve listened to many times but never gets old. Chili peppers at their finest

Five stars to me. Lyrics haven't aged well but the music is top notch.

Incredible album

Fantastic album with high energy and good feels. All the RHCP songs you're familiar with and more.

Love this record, they’re such a unique funk rock band with a very particular sound.

10/10 would recommed

Banger after banger

One of the best!!

Look, I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers something fierce, and I love this album. Ive listened to it more than any other album my entire life and I can quote all the lyrics. But it has two flaws. First, Anthony Kiedis. While I enjoy his musical style, lyrically he often falls flat. I find what he has to say and how he says it entirely unengaging. I didn't connect with it in my youth, and I certainly don't now as a nearly 40 year old mother. Second, these tracks really could have been pared down. Sir Psycho Sexy just isn't neccesary--there is next to nothing good about the song. I always skip it when listening to the album. Otherwise, the band is full of amazing talent, I love the funky style, and I still appreciate them in their moments of introspection. Overall, I give it a 4.5/5. Definitely their best album.

I still go back to this album. No need to listen to it again on this list. But if ya haven’t heard it, must listen.

Love this album

This album is groovy. I'm glad this project is forcing me to listen to music from artists that I know and like but probably wouldn't have listened to otherwise. Castles Made of Sand guitar sounds eerily like Jimi Hendrix and I love it!! These guys are so talented. John Frusciante's extensive solo career is an interesting road I'd like to go down. I also finally made the connection that Chad Smith was in RHCP after seeing a video of him recently where he came up with a drum solo for a song he had never heard before. Pretty cool stuff. It's so interesting to me how people like that can find each other so young (high school, like U2), and how RHCP has beena round for 40+ years and just keep kicking. 5 stars!

I am a moderate fan of RHCP. I really don't care for anything after this album, and I am OK with everything before, but not a hardcore fan. This album, however, for me is their highwater mark. Rick Rubin shines and the entire album is listenable, every track. It doesn't hurt that I have alot of very good teenage memories associated with it, especially w/ the track "Apache Rose Peacock" (the best song on the album). Strong album that I will never skip when it comes up on random.

GOAT album

Awesome, influential, Flea on fine form

Tracks i like.. Funky Monks has a cool funk vibe Give it away Under the bridge Apache Rose Peacock

1991 probably one of the best year in music, and a big part of it is blood sugar sex magik. I'm not a chilli pepers fan, but almost all of them tell that this album is a masterpiece and tbh its not a lie this album is truly good and its way more than under the bridge and give it away. Its a bit less funky and they applied the philosophie of their legendary producer Rick Rubin: less is more. They give more space to Keidis's text and more melodic music in general. By far the best track is under the bridge, a very sentimental and poetic song about Anthony's heroin addiction and it represent well the contrast with a lot of other more "funky" songs in the album like give it away. other good track are: Breaking the girl, suck my kiss, sir psycho sexy, i could have lied and the power of equality. A lot of song in the album talk about sex, but in a original way, like the album have a kind off sexual vibe. I think the album have maybe a bit too much song, they are not as good as those one, but when we know that this album have been recorded in a Mansion with all the band members togheter you could feel it too and understand why the song are like that. The cover is very cool too, very iconic and beautiful. In general the album feel real, sensitive, cool and off course funky its a personal project you could see the influences off all members, the unstopbable bassiste Flea, the cool vibe drummer Chad Smith, The mysterius and talented John Frusciante and The charismatic-poeatic-energetic vocalist Anthony Kedis.

An easy 5 stars. A pivotal album in my youth.

This Album will forever be in my top 5 of all time. Old school RHCP had it all and they went hard with this Album. Power of equality sets the tone for the entire album and it does not disappoint

Favourite songs: Give It Away, Under the Bridge, Suck My Kiss, The Righteous & The Wicked, Mellowship Slinky in B Major, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Sir Psycho Sexy, Power of Equality, My Lovely Man, The Greeting Song Least favourite songs: If You Have To Ask 5/5

RHCP at their peak. IMO this is the best album that they released. It established them as the alt rock mainstay that they proved to be throughout the 90s-00s. Starts out on an absolute tear with The Power of Equality and then hands over to If You Have To Ask which exchanges the raw energy of the former track for sexualized funk. Great chorus and hook on this one with a hopping bassline. Serviceable guitar solo through the outro that sounds about out of character, but in a good way. Breaking the Girl is "mellow" jam by RHCP standards. Shows some of the deeper lyrical ability that the band is capable. Funky Monks is an odd one, but I dig it. Kind of jammy in composition with obvious funk overtones. Opens up in the middle for Frusciante to warble about, but comes back to the tight funk rhythm that is rooted around the staccato snare hit. Amazing that Suck My Kiss became a radio hit single. Fucking awesome song that just tears from start to finish. Raw energy with rap-like spoken word vocals. I Could Have Lied serves as a vacuum after all the energy of Suck My Kiss. Opens with some tender acoustic picking and vocals and slowly builds back into a rock song. I find this to be one of the prettier songs that RHCP have made -- I'm a fan. I've often thought of Mellowship Slinky in B Major and The Righteous & the Wicked as a single song given the transition between them. Mellowship is a loose jam-like song with funk guitar strokes as if made for a porno separated by section breakdowns. The Righteous & the Wicked on the other hand is a more proto-typical RHCP song that lays the ground for what made them successful. This song fucking jams; solid chorus, driving bass line, raw guitar, spacious bridge / solo... Then there is Give It Away. What is there to say... pure energy and a bassline for the ages. Quite possibly some of the raunchiest lyrics to make it onto public airwaves (e.g., "drinkin' my juice, young love chug-a-lug me"). Title track is a straight up fretburner of a jam. Songs like Apache Rose Peacock and Sir Psycho Sexy are why RHCP get labeled as horndogs. I don't mind the songs per se, but I understand now why my mom mentioned being embarrassed listening to this cassette for the first time while outside hanging laundry. The Greeting Song is a great driving song. Grabs from some punk influences with the rippling bass and whiplash-inducing pace out of the gate. This is one of the most eclectic records I've listened to in a while, and I love every second of it. As I said at the outset, this album solidified RHCP as the rock mega stars that would dominate the rest of the 90s and early 00s. There's a lot of variety here even in the hit singles: Under the Bridge, Give it Away, Suck My Kiss, Breaking the Girl. And while I do think that this album is bloated and could have used an editorial pruning (much like the Beastie Boys records) I enjoy the looseness and don't think that it drags. 5 / 5.

Ahh the best RHCP album. Finger lickin' funky. Honestly consider this the epitome of funk rock. Easy 5. Power of Equality is a fuckin banger and brings me back to belting it playing Tony Hawk. If You Have To Ask is the perfect blend of that funk/rock guitar. Breaking the Girl was one of the first songs I loved by the Pep's. Such a sweet sound but falls flat in comparison to the rest of the album. Still a 9/10 song. Funky Monks! Name of the doc on youtube about the creation of this album. Obviously funky and love that shreddage in the middle. Suck My Kiss brings the mf'in energy. Could Have Lied is such a juxtaposition to that. Probably the most emotional song on this album so happy got to see them play it at Nats Park. Mellowship has some of my fav vocals from Kiedis. And that keyboard (guitar effect?) during the chorus is so perfect. Prayin for a bettah dayeyyyyyyeeyeee! Give it Away is the first single from this album and there's a reason why they've ended with is 3/4 times I;ve seen them (4th being last song before encore). Hype af. BSSM is the perfect slow into hardrock jam. Don't really need to say anything about Under the Bridge. Dope ass song. Naked in the Rain is so fucking weird in the best way. Apache Rose Peacock is one of my all-time favs it's so funky. The Greeting Song is probably my least fav on the album. Still love that random off-note guitar note from every measure. Monster solo with a catchy bassline to start it off on My Lovely Man would love to hear it live. Awwwww shit Sir Psycho Sexy. Might be my favorite RHCP song of all time this song fucks and so does Psycho Sexy. That alien sounding bassline is so awesome. Definitely weird but ever since I saw it at Firefly it's been one of the trippiest songs they've created. Also it might be my favorite outro of any song ever. They're Red Hot kinda sucks but it's like a minute long so whatever. The way this album flows is incredible. I still hear the first note of the next song anytime I listen to a song by itself.

The funk-alternative fusion of Blood Sugar Sex Magik was unprecedented at the time. A true alternative classic, all of the songs are great, with only the degree of greatness to be debated. The funky Suck My Kiss? The proto-rapcore of Give It Away? The melancholy but sweet ballad, Under the Bridge? The frightening abuse described in the sweeping strains of Breaking the Girl? Everything else? I can't decide. Despite the differences between songs, the album hangs together as a whole, a testament to the production of Rick Rubin. So many bands followed the Peppers after this album, but none equaled the album or band.

discazo super potente y variado

Just brilliantly funky, sexy and in your face. Flea's basslines are simply epic on this record and Antony Kiedis' rapping is something else. Everyone knows Under The Bridge and it is indeed a great song, but shoutouts to the likes of Breaking the Girl, Naked in the Rain and Apache Rose Peacock. Brilliant

A stone cold classic album. To really understand the 90's, you would need to have listened to this album. Most people know the hits off the album, but there are lesser hits and album tracks like "The Power of Equality" that make this a good lesson. Like with pretty much every Red Hot Chili Peppers album, it can go a bit long, but I don't think it takes away from the overall experience of the album.

4.5 starts really but it still rocks after many listens.

Lyrics on point, Bass on point, Electric guitar on point. Certainly I've listened to red chili peppers before. But not this album. So it was pretty great listing experience. Couple of songs are on my 'Rock' playlist.

Não tem mais uma estrela aí?

Love the Chili Peppers!

One of my favorite albums since I was a kid. Still really love how it sounds like the grooves for the songs are written as a band through jams. Really organic tones and mix too - I like hearing all the little nuances and imperfections too. The way the guitars and bass and drums compliment eachother in a song like Funky Monks is what I really love about the RHCP. Frusciantes best playing is on this album his rhythm lines are so funky and all his solos are so iconic to me and really elevate the song. Anthony keidis really is not a singer or a rapper. The bad singing doesn’t ruin it for me the way some of his bad lyrics do- when it makes me feel embarrassed to like them. Rick rubins work as a producer on this is great. two favorite songs are funky monks and my lovely man. Wikipedia says “ I could’ve lied” is about a relationship with sinews o connor. Cool when flea plays trumpet.

Legendarisch album is legendarisch.

Great, great album! Hands down! Under the Bridge is still my favorite!

One of the best albums of the 90s. Breaking the Girl is excellent and I think I Could Have Lied is one of the most underrated songs of the generation. Really the first 14 song are all really strong with no need for skips. Both musicianship and production are on point. Rick Rubin is a magician and you can argue this is some of his finest work. Only complaint is the album is too long. Should’ve cut My Lovely Man and Sir Psycho Sexy, two songs I could do without.

I've never listened to this start to finish and I'm so excited! I do know the hits really well as someone who grew up in the 90s and was an avid radio listener. I didn't grow up seeking them out too much though because I was really focused on heavier music when they were out and I felt like I was so manically searching out heavy music that I never found myself sitting down and being like "RHCP is what I want right now". Regardless of that, they are an incredible band and this is probably their best album (although I think Californication is really highly regarded as well) "Breaking the girl" "Suck My Kiss" "Give It Away" "Under The Bridge" are all modern classics, with "Breaking the Girl" probably being my favorite track of theirs ("Under the Bridge" a very very close second) I remember "Under the Bridge" being such a difficult song for me to learn on guitar. It was the first non-heavy metal song that really stopped me in my tracks when I was in my first year of playing guitar and trying to consume as many riffs as possible. I remember thinking that the intro fingering was so dang weird but it's pretty obvious to my ears now that it's 2 guitars playing it and not 1. It's very well done and I'm sure someone would debate me on that but I'm really certain that it's two guitars that were very specifically recorded to sound one like. Man the choir at the end really gets me. So sad. I think it's John Frusciante's mom's local choir or something too? 5/5 for me. An argument can be made that it's a 4/5 but those 4 songs are just so good to me. Modern classic. Has everything and yet is so unique and fresh.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time.

This album is amazing , rhcp have to be one if my top bands. The energy they bring is just amazing and all instruments together sound amazing. Flea has be one of my favourite bass players so I knew I would like this record. Overall : Love this album and I am definitely coming back to it .

All time classic. It's like a greatest hits record.

Some incredible tracks on here, I had forgotten how good flea is on bass. Lot of fun listening to them find their sound which shows up on the Californication album

Excelsious, gamechanger

Have owned this album for close to 30 years. Tip top stuff.

Tremendous

True love

A wiki comment regarding the album warrants a 5 alone; 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik', simply, sounds like fucking. Even the purest virgin comes away from Blood Sugar Sex Magik with a degree of sexual maturity; even the slickest playa can learn a couple of new moves." This is considered the best RHCP album and it's hard to disagree. It's not my favourite as By The Way was the album that introduced me to them but it is the best. Other than RHCP, what else sounds like this? 'I Could of Lied', 'Breaking the Girl', Blood Sugar Sex Magik', 'Under the Bridge' and 'If you have to ask' are some of my favourite RHCP songs all on one album. Funky as fuck with a young Frusciante doing his bits

Love RHCP

This sounded even better than I remember.

I was pretty excited when I saw this one. And not because I'm a huge Red Hot Chili Peppers fan. They're fun... I enjoy them, but don't LOVE them. I did however have this album on *gasp* cassette tape (showing my age there, lol). It's fun. Mostly upbeat. I enjoyed it. 8.5/10

One of the first albums I found and then bought myself. I remember the first time seeing their video for "Under The Bridge" and the sound just blowing me away. Up to the point where I got into 90s alternative music I was straight hard rock and hair metal. Hearing George Clinton's fingerprints on this album broke my teenaged brain. This album still holds up and is one of the better ones from this group (not too many songs about California on this one!). It's easy to see how these guys and this album blew up, it's a masterpiece of funk rock.

this was not the first album by RHCP. in fact, it was their fifth. they had been around a few years and had some success with radio airplay, but this… this album was different. full of that funky bass that has been flea’s calling card, this album was an amalgamation of tales of drug abuse, relationships, sex, and trying to find personal meaning. and all tied together by the genius producer rick rubin. it made them into superstars and they never looked back. a complicated album that is sometimes serious, usually fun, but never ever boring. highlights: “the power of equality” “breaking the girl” “the righteous and the wicked” “blood sugar sex magik”

This is one reasons to do this. Listen to albums you never say down to understand and appreciate. They have their own sound. Out there on their own mastered it and stayed Distinctive ... I don't know what you call this funky r&b bear but it works and it's great. Full of anthems of our time. Breaking the Girl. Give it Away! Blood sugar sex magic .. under the bridge Are standouts. Some low points but legendary rock tight bands live sound. Captivating singer.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Nirvana's Nevermind, Primal Scream's Screamadelica and Trompe Le Mode by the Pixies were all released int he same week, September 1991. I was working the counter at Scratches Records in Newtown, and we sold a lot of copies of all of those, but this album was certainly amongst the most consistent sellers over the following year as they kept releasing more hit singles. This record was on pretty consistent rotation at the store and at home for the next year or two. I went to the secret gig they _almost_ played at the Lansdowne Hotel after John Frusciante quit the tour in Japan and delayed their tour. Reliable sources said they were had rehearsed a replacement for a few days and would play with the Meat Puppets and Hard-Ons at the Lansdowne. Until an idiot DJ announced the rumour on Triple J late that afternoon, and the band freaked out at the crowds that turned up. I did spot them loitering backstage, but they didn't play. But I caught them when they eventually came back to the Hordern Pavillion a few months later, and they tore it up. By that stage, they had a bunch of hit singles and turned into one of the biggest bands in the world. I played this a lot when it first came out. I had been a fan of Mother's Milk prior to this, and really enjoyed the looser, less polished feel that Rick Rubin brough to this record. It's a little less frenetic than their previous records, and the more organic production suits their playing. "Mellowship Slinky in B Major" or "Suck my kiss" are probably the best examples of the agreeable funky nonsense on offer. Frusciante really is the star player on this record. They were not an intellectual band, but they had feel and energy and charisma at this point in time, and were at the height of their powers. But I am not sure how I feel about it now. The Chili Peppers have not aged well as a band. I have loathed just about everything they released after this record, and the seeds of that deterioration are here in this record. The weak link is Anthony Kiedis. I feel like Under the Bridge is the initial success that convinces Kiedis that he can be a more melodic and 'sensitive' singer, and it is all downhill from there. His lyrics are nearly all terrible, especially when he thinks he is being profound, and the spectacle of a nearly 60 year old man strutting around like Sir Psycho Sexy has progressed past ridiculous into being creepy. So, the 30 years of increasingly terrible music that followed this record has put a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, and I haven't listened to this album is quite a while. But, coming back to it after quite a long break, I can pretend they never did anything after this, and it _is_ a great album, consistently fun and fresh all the way through. I feel bad for denying myself the charms of this record. If you'd asked me in 1992, I certainly would have called this a five star album, and, when I look at those other classic albums released in the same week, it's not out of place with those 4/5 star albums. I think I am going to have to overcome my habitual distaste for what the Chili Peppers now are to (grudgingly) give this five stars, despite Kiedis' terrible lyrics and borderline singing.

Absolutely brilliant album. Rocking, funky, great lyrics, takes me back to band practice at my nans house. Good times.

Timeless funky nostalgia fest, easiest 5* going

This is totally my kind of album. It was the perfect length, and sounded amazing

I had actually never heard this album from start to finish and there were a couple things that came to mind as I finished: 1) It's quite long and I feel like they could've trimmed some of the fat. 2) Is home to two of some of the most popular songs in "Give it Away" and "Under the Bridge", my personal favorite. It does sound quite modern, though, especially given that it came out in '91; it aged wonderfully, music-wise. Sounds pretty modern. 8/10

I love these guys even when I don't love everything that they play. I love how the will play all different styles, and then mix styles together. Their avoidance of being formulaic works for me in how they go about writing their music.

So horny

Well I'm saillllllllin'! Thank you generator for cuttin' me my share this morning, Fuck Yeah! I am so excited about this album today. I unabashedly love RHCP and I don't even care that this album is way too long. It's got that early 90's Rick Rubin treatment and the sweet Frusciante sound these guys needed to elevate their schtick. The singles from this album alone make it a 5 star rating: monster songs, all-time favourite material, the sounds of my misspent youth that make me feel alive. I mean, the chokehold Give It Away and Suck My Kiss still have on me is unbelievable! And the beautifully moving and humanizing Under The Bridge gives listeners a sincere look at the damaged and tortured soul of Anthony Kiedis. Okay, Sir Psycho Sexy is unbearably cringey and immature, but you have to understand that all that lascivious overflowing sexuality is part of the damage and it needs an outlet too. I just love them and I love what they're about: free range unfiltered expressions of self. Some people are brave and bold enough to let it all hang out, I'm not. But through the lens of RHCP I feel like I could be. They always give you a funky good time, and yeah, brevity has never been their forte, but you just have to sit back and enjoy the crazy blood sugar sex magik motherfucking ride to appreciate what it's really all about. In reality, my head knows this is a 3 star album, but my dick is telling me it's 5.

A bit before my time, but a formative record nonetheless. Suck My Kiss, Give It Away and Under the Bridge being the standouts for me.

Total banger. Top notch album. Probably number 2 in their discography.

This has always been the best rhcp album to me

Excelente

This album is magikal. Can't decide if it's a 4 or a 5. It feels like 17 songs is too much, perhaps a bit bloated. But the 9 song sequence from Breaking the Girl to Under the Bridge is phenomenal. Suck My Kiss and Give it Away are kick ass rock songs (funk rock), and if you like that you need to listen closely to the Righteous & the Wicked because it might be even better (my new favorite; what a hidden gem). Funky Monks, Mellowship Slinky in B Major, and the title track are a bit odd, juvenile, or over-sexed but they are funktastic; the musicianship on them is incredible, particularly Flea's bass and Frusciante's guitar. And then Breaking the Girl, Under the Bridge, and I Could Have Lied are absolutely beautiful pieces - it shows you these guys were serious (Kiedis too) not just a novelty act. Such depth in lyrics and again the musicianship - Smith's percussion on the first one is great (with help from the rest of the group) and Frusciante is a guitar god on the latter two. Even throw in the first 2 tracks (not bad, just not the same level as the next 9) and that's a 5-star 11 track album. So what about the other 6 tracks? Aimless at times, some Kiedis drivel at times but also just pumping rock. Case in point, if you can shut out the lyrics in Sir Psycho Sexy (they'd make a prostitute blush), Flea absolutely puts it down on bass. I mean, out of this world bass lines. In the end, these guys took what they were (strung out funk rock wannabes with flawed style and ability) and what was going on in rock (depth and edgier themes) and completely reinvented themselves and rock music. What they did always occupied its own little corner of rock music - they built on acts like Faith No More or In Living Colour but not a ton of acts followed them exactly. Still, they blazed a new trail. And that tips the scales for me.

Like a lot of teens/twentysomethings in the 90s, my entrance to funk-rock-rap was through RHCP and this album in particular. I thought this album was incredibly cool back then, although Sir Psycho Sexy made me cringe ("There's a devil in my dick and some demons in my semen"??? Made me go ugh then, makes me go ugh now). Some of the tracks continue to blow me away - The Power of Equality, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Under the Bridge (yes, overplayed and all). Other top tracks include Funky Monks, I Could Have Lied, Breaking the Girl, The Righteous & The Wicked, and Give It Away (another overplayed track, but still love the bass line). The one common trend through pretty much the entire album is outstanding musicianship and very cool writing. Even the lyrics are good for most of the album. I'll move past the lyrics on Sir Psycho Sexy and past the fact that I overplayed it when I was younger and give it the 5 it deserves. It's their breakthrough album for a reason.

Melhores músicas: Under the Bridge, Give It Away, Breaking the Girl e Castles Made of Sand.

RHCP being spicy and funky when it needs to, yet mellow in the best ways during the softer songs too. Such a nice mix between soft and hard which makes for a great all round consistent album. It's over an hour run time goes by pretty quickly, has no sour points and has multiple bangers. Ticks all the boxes really. Give It Away was the only song I really knew before and its a solid banger, but I came away liking the title track and Under The Bridge even more. Sir Psycho Sexy and Breaking the Girl were my other highlights.

So freakin' sensational.

There are a lot of very legitimate criticisms you can throw at this band, but it doesn’t change the fact that this album fucking slaps. A goofy band bonded together by immense trauma and drug addiction.

RHCP FTW

Excellent album. A great mix of funk and that 90s sludgy sound in the production. Tons of hits, and great album tracks, with zero skips.

Don’t think I’ve ever listened to this all the way through but this shit slaps!

Hyvä albumi sitä luulee.. vähän nukahtaa... sitten tulee.. yks biisi.. albumin paras biisi.. Under the Bridge.. KOSKA ON HYVÄ ALBUMI VIISI TÄHTEÄ MONI BIISI JÄÄ MIELEEN!!! EI OLE TASAPAKSU 1H 19 MINUUTTIA!!

curto afu das antiga ja

This was an important album for me. I shunned Funk since to me it was a little too closely related to disco. This album reintroduced me to funk, cleared my musical pallet and dealt with my disco hangover that had lasted a decade. The ballads are also pretty cool.

Great guitar tones.

5 stars. There is a lot of hate that this hasn’t aged well. Yes the sexual innuendoes are childish, and Anthony often can’t find the pitch. But who the fuck cares! This has a special place in my heart (and my 2000 accord coupe CD visor attachment RIP)

El disco preciso en el momento justo. Puros 90. "The Power of Equality", "Breaking the Girl", "Suck My Kiss", "The Righteous & the Wicked", "Give It Away", "Under the Bridge", "Naked in the Rain", "My Lovely Man", "Sir Psycho Sexy" y para terminar "They're Red Hot".

I fucking love this album and have since High School.

Perfection

One of the best albums ever.

RHCP. Vinilo.

RHCP at their hottest and pepperiest. This is the perfect balance between the zany funk-rap weirdness of their early stuff and the catchy but safe alt-rock they grew into. I dig.

RHCP doing their thing. The back half is really strong, and quite a few strong tracks throughout. The only negative feeling I had about this album is that it continues to make me feel that Sublime was entirely slighted.

Easy five. The king's of making me strut around the house. Suck My Kiss has been a favourite song of all time since I was a young bloke.

Great - one of my fav bands.

This is phenomenal! It's a double album that keeps you excited for the whole ride. I still haven't heard a chillies song I don't like and I get to see them in January!

Banger, seminal RHCP album. Granted this came out in my junior year of college, so very nostalgic for me. Game changer that came out amidst the grunge movement. Breaking the Girl blew my mind. The opener is a wake up call. Took RHCP from weird funk niche California band to worldwide superstars and set the stage for the next few RHCP albums.

One of the best albums ever made. ever

Geen twijfel over de rating. Funky, heel erg rockend. Goeie nummers en fantastische muzikanten

All ready loved the album

Absolutely amazing album which hits like a baseball bat - Pure LA sound and a complete reshuffle/breakdown of the rock scene when it dropped. Every track is a winner and at least half this album is top 10s. 5/5

I recall seeing RHCP perform at an MTV Awards the year that this was up for awards. They set up to play Under the Bridge in formal wear and got through the first chords before ripping off their clothes and busting out Give It Away near-naked as 50 fans joined them on stage for an orgy for the eyes. This album is joyous.

Great album. IMO it's the RHCP best album. It brought back great memories from my teen years listening to it.

I remember there being a book of bass tablature in the guitar shop I got lessons from that was strictly for this album. Naive, 12-year-old me flipped through it one day landing on "Sir Psycho Sexy" (of course, the tab book had lyrics). Years later, I finally got around to listening to the record, and it became my favorite RHCP record of their entire discography. Love them or hate them, this is RHCP firing on all cylinders, a well-oiled machine of funk rock, somewhere they would never really touch again. Flea absolutely puts work into this record, and John Frusciante creates wonderful soundscapes for Anthony Keidis to go into full white-boy-rock-funk mode. It's, in my opinion, a great album, the right combination of youth, drugs, and just fucking going for it. There's plenty of vulnerability on here too, with "Under the Bridge" remaining a very important track to me. A few songs could be described "misses" on this project, but they'd be the best songs on a lesser album, so they get a pass. Favorite tracks: "Sir Psycho Sexy", "The Power of Equality", "Under the Bridge", "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", "Suck My Kiss"

an old favorite

Fundamental na formação do caráter e aptidão no rock.

Lovely!

Last time I probably listened to this album was in my dads crappy old BMW around 2007. It banged then and it still bangs now- and I was fully prepared to hate this album

Another classic

An old favourite. fave: The Righteous & the Wicked

It’s been a while since I’ve really listened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I never listened to a complete album. I definitely appreciate them more now than I did then… they create incredible compositions in a wide variety of styles. The songs are interesting, include complex arrangements and unexpected instruments, and are a lot of fun to listen to! Really enjoyed this and glad to have found a new appreciation of this group that I had not appreciated as much as I feel I should have when this was new. This is an album I will be listening to again!

There's not much to fault on this well produced funky album which has great songs, excellent lead vocals and plenty of energy. Instrumentally, the group is on fire, creating some awesome grooves. I like that they experimented with sounds like backwards guitar on 'Give It Away', mellotron on 'Breaking The Girl, If You Have To Ask' and 'Sir Psycho Sexy' (also featuring marimba) plus Flea plays Trumpet on trumpet on 'Apache Rose Peacock'. They're not afraid to mellow the mood, like on 'I Could Have Lived' and of course there's familiar singles like 'Under The Bridge' and 'Suck My Kiss'. Unlike a lot of double albums, it doesn't feel like they beefed it up with filler. This was a really enjoyable and accessible album. A classic.

Classic

Not a gem, but close to

very good

Timeless, every song slaps. This album stands so on its own yet defines an era, which is rare

To ne this is still the best RHCP Album. Those afterwards are still great in their own regard, but nothing beats blood sugar sex magic...

Plenty of personal history with this album. Greased funk bassline grooves with Anthony's mercurial lyrical delivery comes together to make a really sonic statement. Power of Equality into If You Have You Have To Ask is smooth and sets the tone for the real groove flexibility the Chili Peppers display on the album. Breaking The Girl is a titan of a song. Suck My Kiss is another. The connective tissue on this record does the important work of creating the space for these monster hits. I Could Have Lied is a sleeper hit on the record. Give It Away punches us all in the face with how it takes over, with the most absolute insane soundscape. Followed immediately by Under The Bridge. Goddamn the hits literally cannot be stoped. The best part is there is this true thread that runs through all of these songs. They're Red Hot is a nice little bow on the end of the sprawling Mr Psycho Sexy. What a goddamn album.

RHCP. Vinilo.

Bangin album here So good the whole way through it Chilli Pepper’s best 9/10

This album just keeps giving and giving!

Top 5 greatest album to me.

Classic!

Great start, love the first 2 songs and some real classic on there!

4.8 - such an amazing album. Classic RHCP sound. A bevy of great songs and a heavy dose of nostalgia. It’s been too long since I listened to this - so glad this project had me pick it up again.

Alguien dijo Funk?!

This really brought back some college memories... I remember I couldn't believe how good this album was back then. Still pretty solid but there are a couple of duds that I was blind to back then. Even so, I gotta say that the hits really outshine the duds. Could see it being annoying if you're not already into this kind of music but luckily for me, I am.

Give It Away and Under the Bridge are 2 of my favorite RHCP songs. Great album all the way through.

One of my all time favourites

For a while, and because of this album, and around the years following its release, the Peppers were probably the "biggest band in the world". I recall recording the album to a cassette. Several months later, when I realised I'm listening to that cassette every day (and despite investing in quality TDK cassettes, these things don't last) I gave up and bought the CD.

Absolute classic!!

When I was 15 I loved this album. Bought the guitar TAB book and learned every single note that John Frusciante plays on this album. As a guitar teacher I still teach the odd song from it (particularly fond of the solos on I Could Have Lied, and Mellowship Slinky...). I thought I'd kinda outgrown the album and band but when it came up as today's album I listened again, and loved every last bit of it, cringe-inducing lyrics and all. NOBODY played their instruments like this back in the 90's. Peak RHCP brilliance.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS

Uh, HELL YEA. I already loved this album (and RHCP). Killer album. One of, if not, the best album of theirs.

A wonderful album from start to finish. I loved the Peppers before this but this album totally reinvented them as a band, showed just how good they could be as songwriters and be taken seriously rather than a throwaway party band. No question that working with Rick Rubin and stripping back their sound worked wonders and Frusciante getting the chance to not just replicate Hillel Slovaks sound. Absolutely wonderful from start to finish ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

ahhhhhhhh va

Brilliant, not as refined or mature as the classic late 90s/2000s albums, but a good fun mix of early Chilis progressing to the Californication sound. I still love this, even if it a bit too long. 5 star album.

Kind of an iconic album, wouldn't you say? I'm all about it.

perfect

Et album der altså...

Really enjoyed. Hadn't list to much Chilli Peppers before Californiacation but this was really good. Some songs weren't great and much preferred the slower ones than the funky ones.

Only really like specific RHCP songs but def a solid album

This really grew on me ...

El goat.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers showcase their ability to bring a jazzy funk with great energy as well as being able to slow it down within the same song bringing various feelings throughout the musical journey. The booming bass guitar is on par with greats like Primus. Favorites: Breaking the Girl, Suck My Kiss, Naked in the Rain. The Greeting Song.
