Reviews (page 4 of 14)
Amazing in scope and vision for 91 and a bunch of self taught drug atticts. AK voice obviously sucks but what they do with it is very impressive. Not everything lands and its a little long by the end but otherwise pretty goddamn good
Flea was slapping the crap out of that bass this entire album. It’s the highlight of the whole thing. It’s a bit of a mixed bag overall though. I enjoy RHCP, but this album is simply too long. This could’ve been cut down substantially and been better for it. The songs that are good (and they are really good) would’ve been a great album on their own. The vocals are kind of meh, and that’s always been their weakest link. But frankly, Flea saves the day with some of the sickest bass lines put to music.
Fantastic album! Love the chili peppers as nd this was when I first got into them and most people! So many classic songs on this album!
I find them eh alright. They sort of weird me out. But dang, they are different and I respect that. Also there's the feeling this gives me of Beavis and Butthead music videos.
Kieidis is highly annoying. Frusciante is great, the rest of the band is great. Far too long.
A familiar refrain: a band in mid-career doldrums, teams up with a talented producer, with the result being magic (magik). This is the Peppers at their best, as steered by Rick Rubin. A good listen…
I love me a red hot chilli pepper blood sugar sex magik
Me surpreendeu muito positivamente.
Cool grooves, some fun songs, but a bit bloated for an album with a lot of filler.
8/10 No bad thing about it Liked: Breaking the girl The power of equality Under the bridge
Moves so easy. Full of meaning.
I was in 8th grade when this album was released. This album was huge back then and seemed to be everywhere. It was so popular at the junior high I attended that the cover of our yearbook was a parody of this album cover. Catchy songs? Sure. Talented folks? Sure. Did I need to hear this album again after its overexposure in the ‘90s? No.
I do tire of their sound after prolonged exposure nowadays, but this is a pretty awesome album.
😛😛😛
okay no specific song notes buttttt i really enjoyed this i was rocking my head and shit humming along i do really enjoy rhcp i think this was like the epitome of them like this is what j think of them very catchy very flowy very freaky not much else to sayyyy i had a good time ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I enjoyed this
Loved it. I don’t understand all the bad reviews.
Quite a fund album, overall pretty good. Couple of misses though but majority of songs good 4/5
There's a lot of fat on this album but there are 5 or 6 great songs and overall it's a great soundtrack to a summer by the sea
They are a great band
Thought this would be a nailed on 5/5 as I loved this album while I was at Uni. Playing it back now, it’s just a lot more… puerile than I remember. Still a lot to love, but I’d forgotten stuff like “Sir Psycho Sexy” which is just pure cringe. Makes sense than I loved it in my 20s I guess.
lowkey goated, but if the lyrics were better and made just a little bit more sense it would def be a 5
Notable Textzeile: There must be something in the way I feel That she don't want me to feel The stare she bares cut me I don't care, you see, so what if I bleed?
Ja. Sind die Lyrics dämlich. Oh ja. Kann Kiedis singen? Definitiv nein. Braucht man das? Absolut.
I already know most of these songs o think. I’ve never listened to it from start to finish though
It’s my wife’s favourite band, so how could I not like it, haha. But I don’t love everything about it, so 4 stars...
A great innovative album with some good funky rock n roll tunes.A great single Under The Bridge. Just a little too long.
If you hate the RHCP, I get it. They are hate-able. Kiedis is, well, himself. Still, there's Frusciante/Flea/Smith, and they are in fine form here. Some clunkers but overall I enjoyed this. The outright homage to George Clinton, Sir Psycho Sexy, definitely went over my head when I first heard this in 1991
Classic, timeless, has it all.
4.5
Peak 90s Chili Peppers.
I'm not a big rock fan but I jammed out to this one.
Man, time hasn't been kind to the Chili Peppers. This is a band who peaked in the 90s and maybe 00s, continues to put out new albums and just hasn't settled into the legacy act that their contemporaries have been able to. It's hard to believe, but they were pretty big when this album came out and this propelled them into the stratosphere. After this album, they were as big as anyone...while their contemporaries still continue to draw big numbers on tours, the Chili Peppers have seemed to have almost faded into irrelevancy. Hard to separate childhood memories and feelings from how I'd interpret this album now. Kiedis is mostly annoying but Flea slaps, Frusciante has some really great moments and Chad Smith hits hard. It's been pointed out, but it's too long. There are some songs here that you could get rid of pretty easily and make this more cohesive. Still, pretty fun to listen to. It's an album that I probably wouldn't reach for on my own right now but I wasn't upset at all about having to listen to it.
Classic album. Didn’t like any of their earlier stuff (with the exception of a song or two off of Mothers Milk).
Probably the last chili pepper album I would listen to start to finish. So many good songs, some mediocre and one overplayed never need to hear in my life again song (under the bridge) I preferred this version of the band and lost interest as they became more poppy. 5 stars but lowering it for Anthony’s questionable choices.
This album made me respect RHCP and elevate them beyond a kinda douchey bro band. At its worst, it sounds like Mötley Crue. At its best, it makes you understand why anyone would ever want to live in California.
RHCP are 5 stars automatically, Flea's bass lines are so funky and relaxing at the same time. Great album. I got bored with the last two tracks, sorry, 4 stars.
Okay, first of all, I love RHCP in general. Can I say that this is a brilliant album though? Well, not exactly. There’s a couple of great songs and some amount of good ones but overall this album doesn’t feel solid enough for me. Though I quite enjoyed it.
Crazy how many popular songs were on this album, had to be revolutionary at the time. Enjoyed it, but wasn't swept off my feet. Still have to give credit where credit is due, it was good.
divertido, lembra muito o manguebeat. tem algumas bangers, mas ouvir um album de mais de 1h com atenção não deu pra mim. se tivesse nota 3,5 seria.
Consistently good, with some great songs. I haven't really given RHCP much time in the past for whatever reasons, mostly personal bias. But to have to admit, this wasn't bad, in fact, I must admit I liked all the songs (besides the last track) and some I really enjoyed. 4 "bass-driven" stars.
giving listening music in the car with dad vibes
C’est h yeah
"what genre is the album?" "Yes"
Fun, 90s defining soulful pop that holds together as an album with a few great tunes.
Giveitaway giveitaway giveitaway now!
5 for the music. 4 because the lyrics sounded like they were from a 15 year-old.
I really enjoyed my time with it but 17 songs felt like a lot at times
Great album! Not as good as californication but great!
L: 6 M: 9 F: 8 O: 7
el álbum está muy bueno y lo disfrute mucho pero lo escuché muy cortado asi q tendría q volverlo a escuchar para opinar bien
John Frusciante is a top guitarist, and in partnership with Flea is largely responsible for many of the Chilis' best songs. Anthony Kiedis by contrast brings a less virtuoso vocal and an obsession with his own genitals, and to a lesser extent the genitals of others. This is the RHCP and it is what it is, so long as you don't mind having it shoved down your throat. So to speak. I still like it and there are still some classic tracks and riffs on here
I was a little surprised at how much I liked this. I was apprehensive going in cause I saw it was 17 tracks and 73 minutes, but I was pretty engaged with this the entire time. There were a lot of songs that I enjoyed more than I was expecting, and there wasn't even that much like weird bad lyricism. Favorites: The Power of Equality, Suck My Kiss, Sir Psycho Sexy
Day835 - the hits were huge and made them the monster band they would become.
This is good but some of the riffs and bass lines can be a bit repetitive but some good classics in this one. I haven’t listened to a ton of Red Hot Chili Peppers before but I’m enjoying a lot of the deep cuts
It's good but like most of their albums too long
Hongur væl saman
A little underwhelmed when I first saw it was my album today, but holy shit these guys were awesome at their peak. Kiedis' vocals occasionally push into so-cringe-they-actually-work territory. Suck My Kiss, Give It Away, even Sir Psycho Sexy somehow goes so fucking hard. A lot of great softer songs too. I love They're Red Hot so much as a closer. I'm usually a 30-40 minute album guy but this right here is a CLASSIC.
Great album!
The juxtaposition between funk/punk and straight alternative bangers can be jarring at times. The instrumentation is amazing, but dear god Anthony is about as tone deaf as a vacuum cleaner. There were some songs I never heard before that I really liked and overall this album was a definite genre defying outbreak.
↑: The Power of Equality, If You Have To Ask, Breaking the Girl, Funky Monks, I Could Have Lied, The Righteous & the Wicked, Give It Away, The Greeting Song ↓: Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Under the Bridge, My Lonely Man, Sir Psycho Sexy
Fun to listen to this one because, while I am familiar with it, I am definitely more of a fan of their later output (Californication through Stadium Arcadium, along with a single here or their from their later stuff). What this album has going for it over the later albums is, I think, the deeper cuts (Stuff like Funky Monks, Mellowship Slinky in B Major, Naked in the Rain, etc.) are generally stronger than those on a Californication or By the Way. Whereas the singles on those albums are much stronger than the ones here (Although the singles are still great classics here). There are a few spots I'm not super enamored with. Most of Sir Psycho Sexy isn't particularly great (Hilarious playing this on Rock Band and having like 80% of the lyrics censored), especially at 8 minutes long (Although some of the instrumental is fantastic), and the track list is very long, sitting at over an hour and thirteen minutes. This is an album that could have used at least 20 minutes cut out of it, even if the vast majority of the material is really good. But the instrumentals is where this album really shines, especially with Chad Smith's drumming and John Frusciante's guitar playing (Not to mention Flea always being amazing), and this album is just some great 90's alt funk. Overall, classic album that is one of the Chili Peppers more consistent offerings.
Class.
Good album.
i really really dig the peppers. theres a fair bit of chaff but the highs are exceptional. at its worst is kinda grody and creepy, a little goofy, maybe creatively vacant if you want to be mean, but in spite of it all it gets you moving. favorite song is probably the title track Blood Sugar Sex Magik, but Under the Bridge is a prime karaoke banger
Memories of my college days. For the first half of the album, I reveled in Flea's funky bass and the over-the-top delivery from Anthony Kiedis, but the second half of the album is not as enjoyable, and on second listen, a bit cringey, so I reduced a certain 5 to a 4.
Funky and Punky, a good combo. Their base lines really add a lot of depth and enjoyment to their songs. The album starts really strong and keeps a consistent quality even if it doesn't advance much further. Feels like a true precursor to Californication with some of their softer sounds which is a good shift imo. The songs are definitely focus on how horny they are which can get old but they are well put together, great to listen to and all come together cohesively. Funky Monks, Suck My Kiss, I Could Have Lied, Mellowship Slinky in B Major, Under the Bridge and the Greeting Song were all great
Look this was fun. There weren’t really standout tracks, I only listened to it once and found that the bass and guitar were awesome and if I tuned out what the guy was saying it all came together pretty well. There were definitely some low points. Mostly the ones that focus on his vocals. I feel extremely white listening to this.
One of Rick Rubin's classics
Flea’s bass is powerful, melodic, and full of groove, while Frusciante’s guitar is minimal and incredibly precise. Together, they create a sound that feels relaxed, yet deeply groovy. My favorite track is ‘I Could Have Lied’.
Iconic from my childhood, this is their magnum opus, and everything after this tried and failed to reach these heights.
"He's a freak of nature but we love him so" This album was pretty good I've gotta say, It felt so California rock and I deeply appreciated that. It was by no means a perfect album, but it was chill. Favorite track was Under The Bridge at risk of being boring, but I also really liked Sir Psycho Sexy.
The lead singer is a creep that actively detracts from the quality of their music. Otherwise the music here is excellent from everyone else.
Standout album from the time. Worth the listen.
I loved this album when it came out and it still holds up today. Yes, the lyrics are dumb, and yes, he can't sing, but I sure do find myself smiling and grooving to this.
This was great. I don't recall hearing the album in full before but I really enjoyed it. It must have been mindblowing to hear this for the first time in its year of release during their rise to fame, what a wild blend of funk and rock. Funky Monks was my favourite of the tracks I don't recall hearing before.
1991 sure was a great year for music, at least for the music I like. I knew this band as a funk rock band whose cover of “Higher Ground” I really liked. This album got them a lot of popularity and I see it as a midpoint between their funk roots and the caricature of themselves that they would become. All the songs flow into each other like a river, with rapids and sweet moments under the bridge. You can hear Kiedis’s staccato influence in later rap rock and nu metal.
9/10 Funk rock cargado de herencia de los 60 y 70.
Tof!
Another album that would benefit from a removal of filler trackers. Theres 8 to 9 cracking songs on here. Dump the rest.
Um bom album, gostei de ouvir e lembrar.
Buena música, el vocalista un poco diferente pero la música impecable.
4.5
3,5/5
Some undeniable classics but waaaaay to much filler. Cut it out and this could be 5 stars. 7/10
First commercial success of the band. Still raw but with a lot of hit potential.
This was my first listen to this album. I am super familiar with the singles. But it was cool to listen to the entire album from cover to cover.
Sometimes a little bit corny, and the album is a bit long, but the music is just so FUNKY.
Loved this album, great to get reacquainted . Some trusty favourites
I used to be obsessed with this album as a teenager. On a relisten I really enjoyed this, its too funky not to. I do scratch my head a little bit about how ridiculously sexual some of the lyrics are.
Ok les tubes on se calme là
I feel so spoiled by their immaculate Greatest Hits collection that I end up not giving as much credit to the deeper cuts (which granted are few and far between on this record). The quality of songs did drop off a bit towards the end (I wasn’t a fan of their Parliament-inspired “Sir Psychi Sexy”) but the album was still exciting throughout.
Almost magical.
While this features probably my favorite song of the 90's (Under the Bridge) and there are several other killer songs on here the album feels a bit too long and many of the "filler" songs sound the same. There is no denying the energy and talent each member of the band has and their sound is so unique and instantly recognizable. Props to Anthony Kiedis for being able to write and remember completely non-sense lyrics.
4.25 - I usually listen to Californiacation, By The Way, or even One Hot Minute when I’m j the mood for RHCP. The non single tracks are in some cases a lot better and in other cases a lot worse than I remember.
My second listen, and I appreciate it more and more, the first halve was amazing funky music with some beautifull ballads. The second halve starts dragging on tho, it should have been cut a bit shorter. 1. Under the bridge 2. I could have lied 3. Funky monks

Macht Bock. Hör ich nochmal an.
Ok, now I like a lot of the Red Hot Chili Peppers music! This album wasn’t bad but for me it was a touch too chaotic and some of the themes haven’t aged particularly well. I would give lots of the songs a relisten but wouldn’t listen to the entire album as a whole again. But damn the music in it is bloody great!
Hit
A great RHCP album. Not my favorite of their albums but I like many of the songs on here.
RHCP²
Funky mix of Rock, Alternative and Rap. Most of 1990 later sounded a bit like this.
good vibe of the time and genre. some really iconic tracks also included.
Classic RHCP album and sound. Was never a huge fan of them, always thought they were meh but this album is decent all the way through. Some classics.
Great record that has aged well!
The Peppers always had a rough image for me (thanks to their sock act), but their music is less rough. If you have "Under the Bridge" on your album, you definitely deserve...
The rhcp definitely made this funky. I think it lacks in being consistently great, but it's a good album with a healthy serving of gems. Unmistakably peppers, for better or worse. It is too long, that's for sure. They should have trimmed a lot of fat and made this a more normal 45 minutes or so. Would have been a lot better song for song. 3.7/5
A classic to me, but the instruments carried hard. The guitar in particular really stood out to me.
A chaotic classic 90s album with so many memories attached. The lyrics sometimes leave a little something to be desired, but overall, the vibes are good! Under the Bridge will always get me singing along, so an extra star just for that song.
I'd ask if this is a JoJo reference, but RHCP is the worst stand in Part 4 #Don't@Me
Blood: a little long at 17 tracks Sugar: high energy throughout the record has me hyped like a 90s kid binging Surge soda Sex: 6 explicit tracks - lyrics are capital h Horny, honey. Magik: authentic, funky grooves track to track, these guys genuinely sound like they're having a blast jamming together
I hadn't listened to this album in full in 25 years, and I was pretty sure it had aged badly. Nothing could be further from the truth - it's still a glorious funk-rock album with groovy guitars and an insane level of energy. I actually enjoyed it much more this time around than when I was a dumb teenager screaming "Give it away, give it away now !" in the middle of a festival crowd, while the Red Hots were putting on a demented show on stage. I can now appreciate the more low-key, slower tracks that are just as good as the bangers, if not better. It's also a very generous album with more than one hour of music and very few filler tracks. The whole Red Hot vibe is still childish and mostly brainless, but it's what's expected of them - it's great party music, plain and simple. I've kind of outgrown this sound now, it's not really my thing anymore, but I can still acknowledge the talent and creativity ; it's a legendary album for a reason. 8/10
We all know this one by heart. It’s sexy, fun, vulgar, emotional, inspired (thanks, drugs), and insanely groovy. No subtlety, just pure vibe and sweat, and it was coolness at its absolute peak back when it came out. I particularly enjoy the lack of overproduction, it is just about 4 guys and their talent. Despite its flaws, this is an essential record and a very good fusion album.
good good
Not my fav RHCP album but some absolutely slamming bass lines and guitar riffs. Classics on here for sure. Not big into the heavier/noisier stuff but can appreciate it. IMO a pretty diverse album too.
Thoroughly enjoyable outing from the Chilis, these guys know their way round a riff for sure. Under the Bridge has always been my favourite RHCP song, I'll always sing along to that, but there is so much to enjoy here. Flea has never been better, laying down some seriously funky basslines. Yep, add this to the collection. I still haven't fully forgiven them for their 'set' at Reading in 2007 though...
B+
4/5 cool vibes nothing special but easy to listen to. Smooth transitions and not too much shouting.
Super funky, love the guitar and baselines. Some songs+grooves were definitely 5s. Had a lot of fun with this one and enjoyed it aside from a bit of repetitiveness and some meh lyrics.
Awesome
Some great songs, some mid songs, no bad songs. Good listen.
it’s got bangers
Ganske kult👌
Good, good, good
Cool guitar, don't love most of the vocals
Excellent guitar work
Great album, I’ve listen to it a few time before. I don’t give it a 5 because I save the 5s for new discoveries that surprise me. But this is a solid album with great tracks.
I loved it as a kid, and it’s still pretty good to this day. There are other rock albums and bands that I think get closer to 5 star. Fun, funky album with a lot of emotional moments.
It was groovy
Very unique sound, it’s no surprise they became known worldwide.
It was musically really fun. Great guitar parts. Lyrically missed the mark for me for the most part. Has some great tunes though.
I forgot how much I enjoyed this album Distinct sound and energetic.
4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/red-hot-chili-peppers/blood-sugar-sex-magik/ Got into RHCP through Californication and By The Way, so mainly knew some BSSM songs from their Greatest Hits album. Listened to it a few times over the years, but never really caught me in the way Californication and BTW did. This time, however, it hit me differently. It's still overly long (as many of their albums are), but it's just nice and funky and lays some foundations they get back to at later albums. Have underestimated this before.
Not going to have a chance to listen today but this is today but goodness I loved this album when it came out!
Look it's occasionally corny and I've heard the singles a thousand times in my life, but man these songs go so hard, give me that funky rock band, white boy.
This is probably the first good Chili Peppers record. It still has a lot of their funk, rap style from the 80s, but took the lineup and style from Mother's Milk, and congealed into a really solid record. The album is too long, and there's some songs that I don't love, but there's some great songs on here. Breaking the Girl, I Could Have Lied, and Under The Bridge are highlights of this record for me.
Holds better than I expected.
High 4s -- not my fave of theirs, but a lot of it is fun (and it's more funky vibes then other stuff, so if in mood for that it's a better choice)
Not quite what I thought it would be. Less alt and more standard 90s rock. I quite like most of it, a few songs are a miss but others make up for it. I can definitely bop/sometimes sing along, I’d listen to more of them
Great album from a band that’s generally singles only for me. You’re listening for the bass lines and guitar riffs more than anything else. “I Could Have Lied” is the unexpected stand out for me
This holds a very nostalgic place for me as one of the very first bands I really got into. This is their best work. I can see flaws as an adult, but it's still taking me back to being a kid.
rhch nunca decepcionan
I actually love this album, but not my fave by them. it’s a bit repetitive. not bad, just a lot of the same sound. mothers milk is waaaaaay better :p
Very solid
I like this album, but it’s certainly not perfect. On the positive side, the band sound fantastic (the drums, bass and guitars are killer), and there are lots of great tracks here: funky rap-rock bangers like ‘Give It Away’ and the title track, plus a few more distinctive songs like ‘Breaking the Girl’ and ‘Under the Bridge’. However, it’s too long given that many tracks sound very similar. Additionally, the lyrics on some songs are highly cringe-inducing (dishonourable mention ‘Sir Psycho Sexy’) and the vocals are merely okay. 3 feels harsh, and 4 feels generous, but I’ll be nice today.
White boys gone crazy goes hard.
Este por lejos es su mejor álbum.
One of the funkiest rock albums in my collection, good stuff.
9/10 - 3rd best rhcp album
I'm struggling to find something to say about a landmark album that I listened to all the time in the 90s, but didn't ultimately leave much of an impression. Chilies' alt-funk was iconic and peerless in that era, though it retrospect it feels engineered to offend no one. My favourite tracks today are the non-singles, like If You Have to Ask and Breaking the Girl. It's quite possible that One Hot Minute ultimately made more of an impression on me.
ながすぎ
Some stand out tracks but as an album, some filler in there.
Gostei bastante. Ótimo álbum
As a gigantic RHCP, I can say without a doubt this album encapsulates who they are damn near perfectly, yet I don't think it's their best album. I appreciate this album for what it is, the album that launched my favorite band into superstardom, with many pretty great songs. Great album just isn't my favorite from them.
4.4!
mannnnnn this is some pretty good shit
muito bom, revisitar
I'm not sure how Red Hot Chili Peppers changed or altered alternative rock, but there is really no one else that has their sound. Kiedis has such a unique voice, Chad Smith is crazy on the drums, and Flea is flat out insane on the bass. It's funny how everyone in the band seems to overshadow the lead guitar as that just never happens. I really enjoy how funky and bass heavy the album is. Not much else to say really, it's a great album, very funky.
Hell yeah, RHCP at the top of their game.
"Blood Sugar Sex Magik" by Red Hot Chili Peppers is a total staple of my youth. I still remember when a friend bought the CD and let me borrow it, and I immediately enjoyed it. It is one of those albums that just stuck with me. "Under the Bridge" is probably the most iconic song on the record, and for good reason. But the whole album works because of that great mix of alt rock, funk, and a bit of rap, all tied together with excellent instrumentation and energy. It is simply a great album, and I am really glad the 1001 albums list brought it back into my rotation.
had a really good time with this!! knew some already. fun
some of the tracks are too harsh for my taste -- but the ones that slap.. slap. Castles Made of Sand of the deluxe edition pushed this up a bit for me, but is it an official track?
I fucking love everything about this. Elite instrumentation and fun vocals accompanying the lyricism.
Great drums, guitar, overall vibe and energy. However, the lyrics are lacking…
While not a huge RHCP fan this record reminded me of what I liked about them back in the day. A lot more fun than later offerings, and it sounds like a million bucks
This would be a five-star rating if it wasn't for the last 4 songs. The album is cheeky and lively, with a funky groove laced throughout. Some of the lyrics were arguably insane but entertaining nonetheless (thinking of "there's a devil in my dick")
1001 Albums Generator 209 (1/20/2025) > Call song Mellowship Slinky in B Major > Verse is in B Mixolydian > Chorus is in E Dorian > Solo is in B minor > Refuse to elaborate > Leave The first 11 tracks form a damn near perfect album (even with fantastic pacing, like the slow I Could Have Lied breaking up the alt/funk rock), and Sir Psycho Sexy is honestly kind of awesome, but there's a lot of fluff in the second half. Also, can we admit that between Flea, Frusciante, and Chad Smith, RHCP was a good singer away from being a real deal supergroup? It is unbelievable how talented the musicianship in Blood Sugar Sex Magik is, especially remember that John Frusciante was 21 when he recorded this. An album that, while bloated, I have a lot of memories associated with, 4/5. Favs: Power Of Equality Funky Monks Under The Bridge Least Fav: They're Red Hot
very good rock album
The hits are great by themselves but the album itself feels like a chore to listen t (although it's only been a couple of weeks since I listened to another full RHCP album). Musically it's great though. Great guitar work. Rounding up to a 4
Classic RHCP.
Incredible album. For the time, their sound was revolutionary. While it seems unfair to dock it a star due to length, It drags on a bit too long. If some of the fat was trimmed it’s a perfect 5 star album. As is, it’s “merely” 4 stars.
*Seminal alternative album for its time *Nice mix of funk and rock- sometimes the album loses me a little
The Power of Equality - 4/5 If You Have to Ask - 4/5 Breaking the Girl - 3.5/5 Funky Monks - 3/5 Suck My Kiss - 3/5 I Could Have Lied - 3/5 Mellowship Slinky in B Major - 4/5 The Righteous & the Wicked - 4/5 Give It Away - 4.5/5 Blood Sugar Sex Magik - 5/5 Under the Bridge - 4.5/5 Naked in the Rain - 4/5 Apache Rose Peacock- 4.5/5 The Greeting Song - 3.5/5 My Lovely Man - 4/5 Sir Psycho Sexy - 4/5 They're Red Hot - 4/5 Little Miss Lover - 4.5/5 Castles Made of Sand - 3/5
Rhcp is exactly the kind of weird that just works for me. I really enjoyed this album although if I hadn’t just listened to californication yesterday I feel like I might’ve given this a higher rating? That one is just perfect in my eyes so it’s tough to follow it up so soon with this album but I did still enjoy it a lot
Genuinely enjoyed this album!
Really solid album by a really solid band - best song : breaking the girl
Man this got me in the nostalgia I think. Not the most consistent album for sure and I could definitely see how their schtick could be grating. But there's just too many bangers on this album that are legit awesome and I just heard all these songs so much growing up.
Album No. 0121 on my list. Oh man, I've used to listen to this album so often as a teenager... The Red Hot Chili Peppers an I have grown a part a bit since then, but I was still really looking forward to listening to this again. It's still a pretty great album. This is really crossover music at its best, with a blend of different styles (funk, hip hop, hard rock) that still sounds pretty consistent. I gotta say though that I don't enjoy the sound of the album as much as I did as a teenager - it just sounds very good to me, I dunno. And I like Anthony Kiedis' vocal style somewhat less as well. Besides, the whole thing gets a bit repetitive - which is somewhat at odds with the wide genre mix I've described before, but still - it sucks you in pretty fast at the beginning, but at least I got just the slightest bit bored at the end. Still, a very cool, very innovative, and very distinct album that stands the test of time. I'll add "The Power of Equality", "If You Have To Ask", "Give It Away", and "Under The Bridge" to my playlist. The latter two are the album's biggest hits and the first two are two of my additional favorites and represent the funky, groovy nature of this album pretty well. Glad I listened to this again! 4/5 stars!
Frusciante shines here!
Power of equality - 5 If you have to ask - 4 Breaking the girl - 5 Funky monks - 4 Suck my kiss - 5 I could have lied - 4 Mellowship slinky in b major - 3 The righteous & the wicked - 3 Give it away - 5 Blood sugar sex magic - 4 Under the bridge - 5 Naked in the rain - 4 Apache rose peacock - 2 The greeting song - 4 My lovely man - 4 Sir psycho sexy - 2 They're red hot - 2
So many iconic songs on this record, it’s almost unbelievable. A few too many funky nonsense tracks to get a perfect score, but it’s one heck of a listen. Best Track: I Should Have Lied
Панки-фанки месиво
banging
Very funky
Potentiell 5
Could be a 5 but loses 1 for keidis being a bit of a tool.
Excellent for driving to the beach on the pacific coast of Mexico.
It might be the nostalgia talking, but this album rips, especially the instrumentals. Falls short of perfection because of the vocals and some skippable tracks.
Great album! Then came the naked in the rain with the killer whale 🐋....
Decent album. The bass slaps
If you only thought of The Red Hot Chili Peppers as Rap Rock or just funk it would a mistake. They hit their full power on this album writing beautiful songs and catchy songs. It seems like they were reaching for stardom they wanted to achieve and they arrived. Give it Away, Under the Bridge, Suck My Kiss, Breaking the Girl as main songs. But Keidis sang more which helped move away from the days of The Uplift Mofo Party Plan.
it was playing in the background while i was writing an essay i enjoyed it, definitely will re listen and fully pay attention to it
This record slaps. Amazing musicians and amazing songs.
4.3/5
Funk metal, super long Breaking the girl Suck my kiss Give it away Under the bridge
It was chill xd
8/10. Already knew a lot of the songs but they never get old. One of their best albums.
i l didn’t listen to the whole thing but i like rhcp
that was pretty fun
Great cleaning music. Also very nostalgic. Solid album front to back if I heard this in the 90s I would have lost my mind over it lol
I think it is a great album, ir is just not my style
Funky, first listened to walking around Buttes-aux-Cailles area of Paris. Second time on train from Cork to Limerick. It was the album that helped me understand the Chili's ability. Watched a cool documentary on the process of making it too, interesting stuff.
Funky. Starts strong with The Power of Equality and If You Have To Ask. Breaking the Girl is one of the most underrated RHCP songs. Funky Monks is alright. Suck My Kiss gets the album back on track with some energy (sick drums). I Could Have Lied slows it down. Some real emotive guitar stands out here. Mellowship Slinky in B Major gets funky again. That riff. The Righteous & the Wicked keeps it riding until the all time classic in Give it Away. Blood Sugar Sex Magic is a great title song. Under the Bridge top 3 RHCP songs imo. Naked in the rain is fun, rippin that bass! Apache Rose Peacock sounds to sound like some of the other songs on the album, doesn't really stand out even with the strange lyrics. The Greeting Song was mostly forgettable. My Lovely Man follows up the same. Sir Psycho Sexy gets wild lyrically, but keeps you engaged with the musical changes throughout the song, especially the xylophone in the third minute. They're Red Hot is a perfect finish. 7/10
Magik, at times
Credit where credits due. Frusciante's got some tight guitar parts, Chad Smith is rock steady, and Flea really plays the shit out of the bass. Anthony Keidis is of course, ridiculous, but not untalented and his limited singing and poetics both really work with the band. They kept evolving for a while too, but there are some monster tracks on this one, and it really solidified the funky stuff they'd been going for.
Ah yes… blood, sugar, sex, Magik, some of my favourite things in life! This album has changed the world of rock for ever. The fact that rick Ruben helped them, one of their mums church choir sings on it, flea basically owned the bass scene and made the instrument cool while being butt naked on stage…
4 yeehaw
Very pleasently surprised by this one, just an all round really cool and interesting album, bass grooves are fantastic, love the guitar noodling and the vocals are really great.
While this is the first time I've listened to this album all the way through, I was already familiar with quite a few songs on this album. This is a really strong album. There are some really excellent songs in Breaking the Girl, Give It Away, and Under the Bridge, but the album is strong all the way through. The tracks that were new to me were very good as well. I would listen to this again for sure.
It was good listen. Love the rock/funk mix!
A great album with inspiring lyrics. Three songs were standouts, ‘Breaking the Girl,’ “Give It Away,’ and ‘Under the Bridge.” Never gave the Red Hot Chili Peppers a listen, but this album is a great introduction to their music.
There's a joke in The Good Place where a character, being quizzed over his mortal sins in an attempt to determine his true place in the afterlife, is asked about the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Apparently 'seeing the Red Hot Chili Peppers in concert' counts against your 'score' and gets you one step closer to the terrible below. I don't know. I couldn't think it'd be that bad down in hell if it means getting to listen to Flea hit those slappy bass licks at knee level for eternity. I'm a big fan of the funk-rock cheeky style of RHCP, and have listened to an enormous share of their tunes in bits and pieces over the years, but I found upon listening front-to-back on this album that I found the sound getting pretty old by about halfway through. That said, I have a massive adoration for the general vibe and feeling, as well as a handful of really classic singles (Under the Bridge, easily). Overall the album could have really been a true five-star if the track list was put under the knife of a talented sadist, but I'm still happy with how it came out. It's missing a lot of those more thoughtful elements that would end up coming more into play later in their careers (thinking of Californication specifically) where I think the Chilis really come into their best work, but this one's clearly trying to be fun and taboo-breaking mischievous in that way that was still very boundary-pushing back in its era of release. Found out that this album and Nevermind came out on the same day: September 24 1991. Obviously RHCC have been massively influential in their own right, but it's interesting to imagine a world in which this album was the one that would kick off and define the sound/style for the last decade of the millennium. fav tracks: Give It Away, Under the Bridge, Apache Rose Peacock, Sir Psycho Sexy
I had a friend who was a die hard RHCP fan. So I’ve listened to this album a ton. Probably had a few jam sessions playing their music. Most memorably one spontaneous jam session where we went to my house at the farm to pick up my drumkit and drive back to his place. His parents were gone so we could jam all night. It was likely after midnight when we actually got setup at his house. Then we jammed until the wee hours of the morning. It was a wicked jam session that just flowed for hours. Then we packed up my drum kit to go back home. My friend who gave me a ride must have picked up a screw in the driveway because he got a flat tire on the highway like 5 minutes into our drive. He didn’t know how to change a tire. So I swapped it out on the side of the highway while the sun was just starting to set. RHCP have always had a very unique sound and re-listening to this album was nostalgic in many ways. I do think guitar hero and generally high radio play time has overplayed them though.
Banger of an album. I love me some old RHCP
Really enjoyed this one! Lyrical style was dope and a bit unexpected with the RHC I was already familiar with. Lil bit of this n a lil bit of that, funk excerpts were dope. 8.5/10
- saved two songs - really really like the music in this album but i cant get past the singing style. i’m just not used to it.
suck my kiss an all-timer. breaking the girl, funky monks, sir psycho sexy, and they're red hot are welcome editions to my rhcp knowledge base. nobody really sounds like them, always open to that.
Honestly, fire despite its flaws. I guess im a chilapano peppers fan now. GOFOFO
Great album, first one that got me into the chilli peppers. Height of their career
That's a good one.
4/5
Gemt i mappen
Album inégal (et trop long), mais qui comporte d’excellentes pièces!! Style original et unique. 7,5/10
Le habría puesto un 5 si el álbum tuviese menos canciones.
146 Me gustó, harta canción conocida, pero muy largo.
know it
4/5
Pivotal album at a formative time of my youth
General thoughts: A well-produced well-executed consistent album. The songs flow nicely one into another, ballads and funkiness are correctly balanced. A good track opener, a nice ending (second half of Sir Psycho Sexy..), fading into a fun bonus track (They're red Hot), the energy is so raw funky and fun, along with the flow it feels like one big jam session. The album barely escapes the Achilles' heel of funk, repeatitiveness. I'd probably never again decide to listen to the whole album on one run cause it would bore me out, but the experience for the first time wasn't bad at all. Tracks also work standalone, which adds up to the dedicated production of this album. So, the album is solid and enjoyable, no filler really on my book (musically), but the songs that really trascend are the ballads, in contrast with the couple of songs with throwaway lyrics. Removing some of the weakest funk tracks to get a more remarkable 10-12 songs album would have made the album experience much better, really dont see the need to make this a double album. Outstanding song(s): Breaking the girl, The Power of Equality, They're red Hot Weakest song(s): Mellowship Slinky in B Major, Sir Psycho Sexy Cover: The kind of cover designed to trascend time. Loved how they handled the band's name along with the album's. Real rating: 3.97
Well I did this project to hear new music and on that level Im glad I listened to this. That and the fact that this is a well produced album is about all I can say in its favor. Singer wants the to be Dylan in the WORST way and the songs overall are just trying too hard to be…something. This music had its moment I imagine but it really doesn’t bear remembering.
listened to again it's a classic though it is a LOT of the same
Grew up on this album. No notes needed. Enjoy Flea or pound sand - or better yet, Suck My Kiss
Oh, Chilli Peppers are so good in this album! Thebintrumental is so good, they are smashing it, you csn tellb that in this album their consolidated their sound. From the well known singles to the b-sides thae album is quite enjoyable and funky. Made me and my daughter dance in the kitchen! . . Also, who doesn't like RHCP?
Probably their finest outing, RHCP had a sound that you know is theirs alive and it feels just right.
The apex for them and Rubin. It’s overlong, but he songs are solid and Kiedis’ nonsense lyrics are charming here as opposed to annoying on other releases.
Pretty fun - I generally like RHCP anyway. (4/5)
Interesante
I always liked this one.
As much as I like the RHCP this album has a bunch of duds and runs too long. When it comes to playing the instruments they are undeniably good. 3.5/5. Raising to 4.
Favorite tracks: Under the Bridge, The Power of Equality, My Lovely Man, Naked In the Rain Begrudgingly giving this 4 stars... Even though I found some new songs I like, I think I was better off only knowing their hits solely because I didn't know how disgusting the rest of them were.
Every time I want to dock points it hits me with another banger
Good album. Some brilliant songs but a tad repetitive.
Brings back a lot of memories! Used to absolutely love this. Songs I had totally forgotten about, but almost instantly remembered when I heard them. Power of Equality is a right belter, but I never think of it when thinking of RHCP. I’m not sure when I stopped listening to these, I think it was around the Stadium Arcadium record. Nothing against it, but it doesn’t sound as good as this, or Californication / By The Way. I think I much prefer the funkier rap side of RHCP which is more evident on this. Saying that, Scar Tissue is one of my favourite by these, so perhaps I’m full of shit. Ive always suspected it. This is overall a bit long and I’m not sure how often I’d return, but it is a belter and an ‘essential’ record in my humblest opinion
It's the best RHCP album I'd say, even if I'm far more familiar with californication. Breaking the girl, suck my kiss, give it away, under the bridge all among their best. Even the album tracks are pretty good mind, very slap bass funk married with 90s rock in a way nobody else managed to achieve. It's mad how well written they lyrics for under the bridge are only to be followed by the some of the worst you're likely to hear on other tracks. Overall great but the lyrics bring it down.
Silly lyrics here and there - trying to be cool and controversial - but now puerile. However, when the songs hit, they really hit. I Could Have Lied was my favourite outside of the main hitters (Give It Away, Suck My Kiss, and the magnificent Under the Bridge). Californication (actually, the run of Californication, By the Way, and Stadium Arcadium) is unequivocally better all-round (I'm not into Funky Hot Chili Peppers) but that doesn't diminish the work here. "Aromatic is the flower, she must be moist". Nice. Real nice.
There would've been a good few years where I would've called RHCP my favourite band and this my favourite album. I haven't listened to it in years, maybe over a decade. Was nice to hear it again, but it definitely isn't my favourite album anymore. I'd forgotten (or it was a bit lost out me at the time), how kinda sexual and filthy some of it is. Probably doesn't appeal like it did when I was a lot younger. Aside from that, I still think it is pretty great. The bass is so funky, great drums too. This was their peak funkiness. I still really like "I could have lied", which is apparently about Sinead o Connor. Under the bridge is obviously great. Breaking the girl, the power of equality, blood sugar sex magik too. I'm going to say 4.5 as I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as my 14 year old self did, and some of the more "edgy" stuff was a bit awkward now. For the record, I think one hot minute is their best album, but it might not be on the list
I will give this three-star release a strategic 4/5 to offset all the fucking garbage I've endured. To Steve Huey, who called this "probably the best album the Chili Peppers will ever make": Your myopic conclusion never foresaw By The Way, apparently. Why would you cap the Chilis' creative prospects so early in their discography?
What a throwback. When this first came out, I was only 5 or 6 years old. But I remember it so vividly on the radio and through my brother’s friends. It was so out there and in your face. Very much a 90s California “F You” fresh sound to my innocent ears.
Fantastic album
Can’t go wrong
Classic
A rough early section of this album gives way to some heat. The first two songs are by far the worst on the album. Power of Equality's chorus sounds like I asked my niece to come up with some rudimentary rhyme schemes and well...it was very simple. Though the instrumentation in that song is good. Much the same in If You Have to Ask, which they must have asked the lead singer to perform his parts extremely hungerover and sleep drived. Both of the first two tracks I believe would have been bangers without the vocals but in their current stages they are a skip. However, we get a list of songs I at least tolerated or loved after. Highs are Funky Monks which has a funky vibe to go with its namesake. Under the Bridge is probably the catchiest song on the album barring Give it Away Now and Suck My Kiss which are both great but Under the Bridge is a song I couldn't help but sing along to. You kick the first to songs off this album and you have a perfect album but in this state its still a very high 4 out of 5 chili peppers
Standouts Breaking the Girl Suck My Kiss Give it Away Under the Bridge The Greeting Song
Nostalgia's playing a bit of a part in this review, but I still really like this album. This one and One Hot Minute are just great.
What an album! A-ma-zing.
Honestly very surprised as to how cohesive put together this was. I always thpught that rhcp are more of a single/best of listenable band but this was very nice
This is not my most favorite RHCP album, but it does have my favorite song of theirs. Under the Bridge never gets old. A solid listen
Hmm, hard one to rate. I've heard several RHCP songs before, but the only ones on this album I've heard are Under The Bridge and Give It Away. The first one is fully a 5, and the second a high 4. The rest of the songs are a bit of a letdown from that. As expected, the songs have a chill vibe, and his voice is solid. But the songs themselves just leave something to be desired. There were a few highlights, The Power Of Equality, Breaking The Girl, and I Could Have Lied. Average would probably be a 3, but maybe that's just be cause I'm holding it to a higher standard because of their songs that I do know. I think I can be happy bumping this up to a 4. Best song: Under The Bridge
Love the Chili Peppers
Awesome groove album with slapping bass and funk
Osa fanittaa uudempaa, osa vanhempaa. Itse olen Stadium Arcadium -miehiä mutta oli tälläkin levyllä hetkensä. Esimerkiksi Under The Bridge kuuluu all time favourite kappaleisiin heittämällä.
yknow what, it's really long but actually pretty enjoyable
Classic RHCP. This is probably their first foray into what I would deem their signature sound. With classic tracks like Suck My Kiss, Under the Bridge and Give It Away, Blood Sugar Sex Magik is quintessential RCHP listening. Best: Give It Away; Under The Bridge Worst: They're Red Hot 3.5 Stars
Actually really liked it. Wish it wasn't so long. Nobody needs a double album.
Love the first half of this album. Back half drops it to 4 stars
An album I listened to a lot 25 years ago, and now revisited and enjoyed quite much -not as much but before, though-
We'll I've heard this one many times before.
Stupidly funk, entertaining and magical. Arguably the second half is kind of a B-side collection, but who cares if you vibe to it.
Great singles, good vibes but I didn’t feel like this was amazingly memorable all the way through. Definitely rate it for suck my kiss, absolute tune.
One of their best. High 4
Went into this expecting to grow tired of a lengthy funk rock album, I wasn't expecting it to be such a solid effort with stand-out classics. I was NOT expecting Under the Bridge after the title track, or at all. So, it's been a beautiful experience. Great track list. Blood Sugar Sex Magik isn't philosophically mature, but academically, sonically, it gets something right. There's youth and carelessness, and enough self awareness to have respect for the genres and artists it's building on. This is a bad-boy ladies' man soundtrack. 3.7/5
At times obnoxious, at times un-musical. But it has The Juice.
Love John Frusciante
There so many bangers on this album. It fully excuses the lack of flow from song to song. RHCP are such an amazing band.
This album always makes me wonder how much cooler RHCP could have been if Anthony Kiedis wasn't such a drug riddled train wreck. That said, this is one of those seminal '90's alternative rock albums. You can definitely hear the influence it had on the NuMetal/rap rock movement a few years later. Also, it's quintessentially LA music. I'm guessing this album is polarizing, but I grew up with it so I like it. In small doses, but when I want it, it scratches that itch.
There is so much energy on this album - and while the beat and basic feel of a lot of the songs is similar they are different enough melodically to keep your interest. The lyrics are incredibly out there and in your face. The overall album makes you feel like you are at some incredibly fun and energetic party and you can see why they are such a popular live act.
This was the bridge from chaotic funk to melodic funk. John’s second album and a stepping stone into his melodic presence while also deporting bit from Hillels wild style. This album is truly the blend of what made the peppers popular in their early days and what would make them globally popular afterwards. There is some filler, but the bass is funky, the drums are powerful, and the guitar is mesmerizing. I think there is some filler, but the strength in the big songs is substantial.
Excelente,mas poderia ter menos músicas.
The way the singer throws his voice is fun to hear, especially in something like “Under the Bridge,” which stands out tonally in an album all about its namesake. It’s hard to describe what’s satisfying about his voice, all I can think to say at the moment is that his voice fits perfectly for the genre. It is also quite nice that the songs lead in to each other as it gives the album the “togetherness” I expect from albums I should listen to before I die.
Great guitar, bass and drums on this. Great production as well. Under the Bridge is amazing.
Not sure if this or the predecessor "Mother's Milk" is the best album of the RHCP. This one here is great, funky, switching to all the melodic stuff that the band would focus on later. If I had to choose, the funk stuff is way cooler. "Funky Monks" is without a doubt the big highlight of the album. "Under the Bridge" is a song lots of folks might know and you wouldn't expect it after the rather played by the book "The Power of Equality". What I'm saying is: RHCP is there for good, over the top funk-rock. And the album achieves that in its best moment but surely could lose some of the softer tracks.
No, I don't like RHCP. But since it's here, let's listen! Breaking the Girl is actually a pretty good song. OK. 3 stars. The band is kind of "meh," but this album is OK. Then I realized I was singing Suck My Kiss really loud. Yeah, it has some good songs, but it's Red Hot Chili Peppers. I never actually liked them. Oh no, Give It Away... I hate this song! But I love Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Oh, now I'm singing and banging along to Under the Bridge. Hey, Apache Rose Peacock is really good too! OK, OK. 4 stars!
The Red Hot Chili Peppers' album "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" has been part of my life for years, ever since I bought it for my wife when it was first released. The album is a blend of rock, funk, and rap. While this fusion works incredibly well on certain tracks, for me, this combination can become tiresome at times, especially for an album of this length, which gives the album an uneven feel. The musicianship is what truly shines. The ensemble of Flea, Chad Smith, and John Frusciante is top-notch, something I saw first-hand when we saw them perform live. To me, John Frusciante is the standout member of the band. His guitar work is exceptional, and the band's sound suffers when he isn't a part of it. Anthony Kiedis's vocals, however, are something I can take or leave. For me, that's probably the heart of the matter with the RHCPs, musically they are great but I struggle with the vocals. A good example of this tension is "Naked in the Rain". The band is on fire, there is a searing guitar solo from John Frusciante, quite wonderful, but the vocal melodies don't quite live up to this. Ultimately, I find "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" to be overly long, but nonetheless a good album with moments of brilliance that just raises its rating to four stars. 1- "The Power of Equality" (3/5) 2- "If You Have to Ask" (3/5) 3- "Breaking the Girl" (3/5) 4- "Funky Monks" (3/5) 5- "Suck My Kiss" (3/5) 6- "I Could Have Lied" (4/5) 7- "Mellowship Slinky in B Major" (4/5) 8- "The Righteous & the Wicked" (4/5) 9- "Give It Away" (5/5) 10- "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" (5/5) 11- "Under the Bridge" (5/5) 12- "Naked in the Rain" (4/5) 13- "Apache Rose Peacock" (3/5) 14- "The Greeting Song" (3/5) 15- "My Lovely Man" (3/5) 16- "Sir Psycho Sexy" (4/5) 17- "They're Red Hot" (2/5) Total - 61 Average - 3.59 106/1001
Red Hot Chili Peppers are very consistent with their sound. Their musicianship is always fantastic and has some great riffs that stick with you. This album is no different. Their music, I would say, is a bit quirky, but it's in a way that I personally enjoy. You've got a little bit of everything in this album, and it leans a bit more funky than the other RHCP albums. This being said, this was not my favorite of their albums. Incredibly solid, but funk doesn't speak to me as much as some of their other albums do.
Love them but not my fav album
treat it like a 4.5
Iconic. So many nonsense lyrics but the groove and the funk and the nostalgia factor give this one 4 stars.
Loved it! Will hopefully write longer reviews as I go
God damn that guitar is funky! God damn that bass in funky! God damn those drums are banging! I knew going into this that this was arguably The Peppers best album. And it proves it. With such classics as Give It Away and Under The Bridge. This album rocks!
I've never been a big RHCP fan. And I'm still not, but I do appreciate this album. It's too long, for sure, but it is such a vibe.
Some really good ones
Man, this brings me back. I wanted to ask for the album for Christmas in 1991 based on Under the Bridge. Of course, because the word "sex" was in the title, there was no chance my mom would buy it for me. Fortunately, What Hits?! came out the following year and had a much more palatable title. I DID get that one for Christmas. Parents, right? More than nostalgia though, this is a great album. Well-recorded and produced, great grooves, Kiedis' vocal style, badass drums, Frusciante's melodies, and Flea all add up to make this (and subsequent RHCP ventures) a big part of the soundtrack of my youth. There isn't anything on this album don't like. ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25
Always a good listen!
Pretty great record. A Rick Rubin special. Def very cool stuff even many years later.
I always kind of dread returning to albums that I loved as a teenager. God help me, I think I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers still. I totally get why some people would not like this album. If clever, esoteric lyrics are your thing, RHCP might not be your band. The lyrics here are not without their charm, but I could see how others might find them grating. This album has some simple but really tight drumming, guitar that can play to the strengths of the band and a bassist that is very comfortable injecting his own style and taking the lead. The funk/jazz/rock fusion is very appealing to me. There's some diversity in sound here, certainly more than other bands in the 90s. Gotta admit though, the singles from this album have got to be competing for most overplayed 90s songs.
