Reviews (page 10 of 14)
I respect it, but I don't like it.
Every ending is a new beginning...
3.5
- First song was very familiar and fun, but the last part of it less fun, - Second song a bit boring (Sad but true)
What surprised me the most was that I didn't hate the album. Heavy metal music has never been my go to music, but with the slower, heavier sound of this album, I thought it was more than long and loud guitar riffs which would often hurt my back teeth; plus, it was a nice change from the electronic music I had to listen to yesterday. Still, I'm not a big fan as the lyrics were quite depressing. My biggest problem with the album is that so many of the songs have the same sound, so it becomes hard to distinguish one song from the other; still, best song: "Enter Sandman", worst songs: "Wherever I May Roam" although it could have been, "The Struggle Within" or "Of Wolf And Man" also as they all sounded pretty much the same to me.
Enter Sandman rocks. The rest sounds like those kids in high school who wore jeans jackets
Yeah well. Plays of this one would be in the thousands. Far from my favourite from Metallica, but still a good spin.
Fine.
Yeah it was ok. I feel like I have personal biases against Metallica. I didn't dislike the songs but didn't like them either.
Metallica used to be my favorite band. Then they hired Bob Rock to produce this. The Black Album was the beginning of the end. Good for them for the commercial success but it’s not for me.
There are some heavy hitters here, and then there's the rest of the album. You can tell this is probably the most commercial album in Metallica's discography, mainly due to the sound they decided to capture. I don't really know how to describe that in words, but tracks such as "Wherever I May Roam" and the iconic "Enter Sandman" sort of reinforce that feeling. This all leads me to share the same thoughts I had with their previous album on this list, "...And Justice For All", in that it all sounds a little one-dimensional to me. The song structures just never really differ from track to track and it all becomes a tad exhausting to listen to. Ballads such as "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters" act as a change of pace here and there, but ultimately this doesn't strike me as *that* influential of a metal record. I stand by my opinion of preferring Metallica's earlier, thrashier stuff.
I liked the ones that everyone likes
the guitar and the drum...
Just not my favorite. Some replayability but ultimately just not my type of music
Not a big Metallica fan but, always enjoy listening to Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters.
Its okay. There's a couple songs that I might have enjoyed if I hadn't heard them as a kid, but overall a little heavy for my taste.
Heard several of these before. Not bad.
rock
Veerry good album, a classic, some beloved songs there, a few of the albums in this genre i actually like, tho still not my cup of tea.
Pretty straightforward metal
I have heard so much Metallica. They have been massively overplayed. That's not their fault, I'm just tired of it.
Great metal album, I think it isn't quite on the level of master of puppets and ride the lightning for me. Overall enjoyed though
Nota: 3.0
To give some context for this review, I have no nostalgia for or emotional attachment to the music of Metallica. I have never listened to one of their albums front to back and I've only heard bits & pieces of a few tracks ("Nothing Else Matters," "Master of Puppets" and "One") thanks to Hardwell, Stranger Things and Guitar Hero III. Yes, I'm THAT normie. In spite of this (and partially because of this), I've quietly been very excited for the Generator to eventually give me some Metallica. The combination of how much I liked Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album and how much I disliked Slipknot's All Hope Is Gone made me curious how the band most synonymous with metal (and the best-selling artist in the genre) would fare. I also listened to my first Lou Reed album very recently and was waiting to give Lulu a listen until I could ingest some "normal" Metallica, so getting their self-titled LP as today's assignment was a huge treat. At least, I thought it was going to be a treat. I won't beat around the bush here... I can't say in good faith that I'm a fan of this album. I guess my main issue is that I just don't really like James Hetfield's vocals and they're pretty hard to escape from here. Most of the tracks have decent guitar solos and those certainly help break up the longer vocal sections, but the instrumentals are rarely ever compelling enough to make sitting through minutes upon minutes of unbearably “masculine” vocals worth the wait. Another thing I knew about Metallica going into this album is that Lars Ulrich is often referred to as a bad/terrible drummer. I always assumed people were being needlessly harsh (and I still think that, for the most part), but I can kind of see what they're talking about after listening through The Black Album. His drumming usually gets the job done here, but it's not particularly technical and there were a few moments where it sounded like he was wandering off the grid, which got a bit distracting. I did enjoy this album a few degrees more than All Hope Is Gone and feel like it deserves a higher rating, but I'd also be more annoyed with someone putting it on over other albums that I've rated three stars, so I'm a bit stuck here. I'm feeling nice today, so I'll go three and cede that perhaps this is a good album in a genre I generally don't care for – I like metalcore, alternative metal and progressive metal, but maybe thrash metal just isn't my thing. Oddly enough, I think I'm even more excited to listen to Lulu now – I just can't envision how Lou Reed & Metallica would work together and I have to know what it sounds like! Will report back on that in my next Metallica (or Lou/TVU) review, assuming I have anything interesting to say. Highlights: Enter Sandman, Holier Than Thou, Wherever I May Roam, Nothing Else Matters
I’m a little disappointed I didn’t like this more. “Enter Sandman” is cool and all, but feels sort of cliche to me now. And the other tracks just didn’t do much for me. Maybe it’s the singer’s limited vocal range?
Enter Sandman
Nothing like enter sandman at 6AM to get you hyped for a workout. It’s good but not something I would listen to casually
5/10
loved it
According to some critics, this album represents Metallica's move from their earlier thrash metal brilliance to mainstream commercial rock. I agree, and I am thankful. That said, the move isn't significant enough to make me a fan. I can easily respect and appreciate the work and move toward maturity. It sounds great and has a few memorable standards. They just won't be standards in my listening history.
I have mixed feelings on this one. It was their first album I listened to, and I dug it. That was 25 years ago at this point, and my taste in metal has grown a lot since then. I liked this album at the time, but it doesn't really hold up for me. It's got some good stuff, but the overall tone just doesn't sit well with me anymore.
Classic!
Better than I thought it'd be. Enter Sandman is a banger.
This is their radio album. Enter Sandman is trite. One is classic. Some filler, some heavy. Not their best work, this is when it all started falling apart...
Solid uncontroversial metal.
Struggled understanding the lyrics and the panting but very pleasant!
My uni mate loved Metallica. He tried for a number of years to convince me. Never quite got there with Heavy Metal. Going 3 stars in honour of Jools!
It may not be my style, but it’s not horrible
This is a solid album, but the heaviness (in particular in sounds) weighs it down. I do think it is too cohesive and in his own world to truly be great in my opinion. There is no question it should be there, or that it is worth a listen, but I understand why the hit is Nothing Else Matters, a gorgeous song, and probably the only one who doesn't sound like the others. I also think the songs are generally too long, 1H plus for twelve tracks it feels quite slow which is surprising for a metal/rock album. On the positive side it has energy, depth, and ambition. I could have used some fun, but overall I did enjoy listening to it
After reviewing "...and justice for all", I came into this expecting the worst, and was pleasantly surprised. I like the slower, more methodic sound, the bass is actually present, and the use of atypical instrumentation in metal was cool.
This is the album that the guy next door in the student dorm kept playing over and over. So, despite myself, I know every note. It's a decent album. Not my thing but I'm forever grateful that my neighbour wasn't into worse music.
Have never (knowingly) listened to Metallica before, some great drum and guitar, interesting lyrics and loved 'Nothing Else Matters' so glad I discovered this
Didn’t like as much as I thought, but still shreds
Another oh well record. Contains the big hit, but also plenty of left in right out tracks.
Enjoyed listening to this album 3/5
Im getting back into rock ish Music, but I think it was pretty good, didnt listen the entire album
i clicked on the wrong one, accidentally finding the 8h anniversary version. this shit will be on my spotify wrapped whether I want it or not. 3*
Tricky. There are some good tracks on here, ones that I enjoy listening to, but I don't think this 'works' as an album. It's analogous to putting your favourite track of all time on repeat for an hour; at the end I'll guarantee you'll like it a bit less. It would help if this was about 20 minutes shorter. 3/5 as an album. Some of the individual tracks deserve more.
++: Enter Sandman, Holier than Thou, Wherever I May Roam, Through the Never, Nothing Else Matters, Of Wolf and Man, My Friend of Misery +: The God That Failed, The Struggle Within +-: Sad but True, The Unforgiven, Don't Tread on Me 7,7/10
I know this is the album everyone points to as the beginning of the end for Metallica. That said, I can't say that I disagree, as I like the earlier albums much better, but it's really not that bad. That, and I have a soft spot for this time period because it came out as I was discovering music on my own, so it imprinted on me. I probably won't put it on for myself, but I can't help but nod my head when I inevitably hear it at bars, restaurants, etc.
Good album, seemed larger than life back when it came out, less so now.
Would listen for a workout
It's alright, a bit long though.
I knew the big singles, but never listened to the album before this. Some of those have grown on me, but overall the style isn't really for me.
Lot of bangers on this one
While I respect and even like some of their older material (especially Ride the Lightning), my friends nearly ruined Metallica for me forever during high school in the late ‘80s by playing them constantly, at high volume, while staging mock fights. So by the time this album came out and took over the FM airwaves and MTV, I was well and truly over them. Listening to the full album for the first time ever today, I can recognize its qualities and why it won them so many new fans (and why many longtime followers were put off by it). My main problem with it is that by slowing down the tempos but otherwise keeping the snarling Hetfield vocal delivery, dystopian lyrical content and heavy riffage, the band lets cheese slip through the door — something highlighted by the brilliant Metallica-Huey Lewis mashup “Hip to Be Sandman” several years back. The other side effect of corralling the thrash was creating more room for Lars Ulrich’s absolutely ham-fisted drumming to come to the fore. There are also signs that the band was starting to run out of ideas.
Middle-school me is shouting "GIVE IT A FIVE" while 40-something me is shouting "YOU KNOW THIS IS NO BETTER THAN A TWO" ... looks like I'm spitting the difference and rounding down.
I gotta give it credit for being a crossover metal record that rejected hair metal and hit concurrent to grunge. Not my thing but the singles hold up for what they are.
i've found i kind of fall all over the place with metallica. this album falls somewhere in the middle. i find i tend to like their earlier more energetic stuff, and this is kind of not that. of course, they're metallica, but this album does feel a bit more subdued and melodic, with ballads such as 'nothing else matters.' of course, 'enter sandman' is a classic and there's nothing on here that's truly bad or unlistenable, but i'm not sure i really vibed with it outside of maybe a handful of tracks.
On parempaa mitä muistin. Balladit varsinkin
Just okay!
I’d call this 2.5 rounded to 3. What saves this is more than 2 songs being standouts on the album. Enter sandman alone is one of the better Melodies in rock music. But I stand by the solos not really moving and sounding robotic. And there’s a lot of them and it’s clearly a focus. I just don’t dig it. No shuffle in the groove or 2 bar riffs at all don’t help. Thanks Lars.
It's a shame I don't like it, because I think it deserves a higher rating
I wish I liked this, but I don't
The non-singles really hit for me this time. As far as singles go, The Unforgiven fucking rules. overall, Metallica is so important and I straight up do not like them. you can hear them (Lars) sweating to make it work.
It's the last decent Metallica album. And the one I listen to the least these days.
There’s a good amount of fantastic songs here but it’s also a very long album
Better than the last Metallic album, but still basic American dad rock.
So many hits on this. Jason’s bass is famously present in the mix. What a crossover album.
Remembering this seminal study of our youth: "Metal Makes Ants Eat Faster, Science Proves" (9/4/14) Metallica made me that ant today.
i used to hate Metallica but started coming around a few years ago. this album has some real sledgehammers but i still hate songs like unforgiven and nothing else matters. at the end of the day, my growing appreciation mostly leans toward their earlier, faster metal.
Decent but as expected metal
Metallica’s 1991 album hits hard with its heavy riffs, but it also has surprisingly polished, melodic moments that make it easier to get into even if metal isn’t usually your thing.
Better than expected, still not really my type of music
omg yeji and mark really like this band and i remembered once they made me watch them and now they are engrained in my brain (engrained enough for a white band, i knew some of the songs that should count for something)! anyway this was fun i wasn't annoyed 🫶🏻
I liked this metallica album better than and justice for all, but not enough to give it 4 stars…I feel pretty neutral about it but overall not my vibe
Honestly, thought I would like this album more than I did knowing the hits that came off of it.
I hate Metallica.
Decent album with some great songs, and also some not so great songs. Probably the last good Metallica album, I don't think they have put out anything decent since. Knowing what they did in the first 4 albums, I can't rate this higher than 3.
they sold out bruh
I loved this album when I was discovering metal. Listened to it like crazy. Now I recognize this is when Metallica started to decline. Their first four albums are so much better, and everything after this album is straight un-listenable. This album is listenable, but it feels cheesy to me now.
Okay I know how iconic they are and how good their musicianship is, but I just don't like the music
Another art versus artist record for me. I can appreciate the energy and production, though this seems more like Pantera Light. I'm still jilted from the Metallica v. Napster lawsuit and bear a grudge that they were a bit petty and short-sighted about access to music. Though now we're living in music streaming content hell and I hope they got what they wished for. And the content of 'The Black Album' itself, it's alright. They should still steer clear of the Cowboys From Hell.
day 2, 8/12/25: self titled metallica track 1, enter sandman: 4.5/5 track 2, sad but true: 3./5 track 3, holier than thou: 3/5 track 4, the unforgiven: 4/5 track 5, wherever i may roam: 3.5/5 track 6, don’t tread on me: 2/5 track 7, through the never:2/5 track 8, nothing else matters: 3.5/5 track 9, of wolf and man: 2/5 track 10, the god that failed:3/5 track 11, my friend of misery: 2/5 track 12, the struggle within: 2/5 metallica is metallica. not my favorite but i won’t change the station if they start playing. this album is pretty much exactly that too. 3/5.
3 stars Another album that is too long but probably has enough good stuff to have been a great 40 minute record. My mind wanders and I stop caring. I forget about how great of an opening “Enter Sandman” is when I’m listening to 3 identical thrashers at minute 50. The singles are solid. Maybe others are good but it didn’t stick.
After a few days stretch I finally made it though this one. Very promising first few songs and progressively lost its charm
Really liked some of the songs but I found a lot of it too similar. Would definitely listen to the tracks I like again but wouldn’t listen to the whole album. Fav song: Enter Sandman Least fav: The Struggle Within
Overrated
This was the first time I listened to the whole album. I considered giving 4 stars (the two top hits are both definitely 5 stars), but in the end decided on 3, because I don’t think I’ll listen to the whole album again. A lot of songs started to sound the same to me.
Can get behind this in the right mood
Gah this was so close to a 4 because some of the music really does rip. But fuck me I just hate when singers growl at me. This album isn’t super egregious but just when I’m getting into a song, that little creed “uhh yeaaah” yanks me out
A 3.5. This is chock full of classics (RIP Mariano Rivera), and decent range for a heavy metal album. Although it doesn't do a lot for me, this album oozes pure Metallica sound
This is the album that AI would come up with if you gave it every 70s rock album. This is the absolute mean of all rock music from this period, even down to the folksy harmonica solo. It’s not good, it’s not bad, it’s average in every way possible.
As far as 62 minute songs go, this song is pretty ok.
3 1/2 stars
Partially rad, partially toxic masculinity, partially boring and samey
Good but not great
Fun but not enough to be better
*A few good songs, but pretty repetitive. *Metallica is best when they're playing around with volume (loud and quiet parts). *Fave track - Nothing Else Matters RATING - 6.5/10
The best metal album (which is an incredibly low bar, but still- they cleared it!)
Enter Sandman has to be up there as a Top 10 album opener.
The acoustic parts kinda feel like they're trying to be Led Zeppelin IV for the 90s, which I didn't like the first iteration of it anyway! I guess it kind of falls halfway between thrash metal and classic rock, which makes sense for its reputation. The album sounds pretty cool, but not cool enough to totally justify a 1 hour run time. Oh and also! I was always under the impression that Metallica fans saw Lars Ulrich as a bit of a joke, so I was really pleasantly surprised to hear just how great the drums sounded here?
Less than 500 albums to go and there are a lot of bands repeating. Oh well. Good album that sounds like Metallica…again.
alright
Ouais sympa mais pas non plus incroyable
I listened to Metallica too much when I was in 8th grade, so I think that's why I have a juvenile association with this album and most of their discography. I've tried several times to sit down with this album, but just can't make it through. It's like it's trying too hard, taking itself too seriously, and I just cringe. I don't feel like this sound has aged well, or maybe I've just heard many of these tracks too many times. It's tough to rate, because it's not as if I hate it or love it. I'm just a bit indifferent. It just seems to lack passion and sincerity, like it was manufactured just for airplay. I don't know enough about the Metallica story to weigh in on them "selling out" when this record was made, but I can see how many argue that this album is mostly pop songs under the guise of metal. I'll rate it in the middle since nostalgia is convincing me to be kind.
Sure, I guess this album belongs on this list given that 1001 albums is quite a lot and some of the other middling garbage they decided to include. Metallica's "Black Album" is pretty decent and probably their last decent album (I confess I did have Garage Inc. and enjoyed it as a kid more than I probably should have). Some of their best sounding production/mixes, but a lot of the songs to lack the teeth of their earlier output.
Not as much of a fan as with master of puppets but good sound and cohesion
It was fun going back to this album, I was a huge fan of it back in high school, and Metallica was one of the first metal bands I ever got into and were what helped turn me into the massive metalhead I am today. While I'm not quite as into it as I was back in the day - these days I prefer Metallica's early stuff to the much more radio friendly Black Album - it's still a really fun album with some absolutely iconic riffs.
The transition album, I definitely like the albums before it better but you get old and you can’t play hard anymore so you make an album like this show. You can still play hard but you’re slowing down. Metallica was never my favorite band, but they’re good. I saw the tour for this album they put on an impressive show.
Pretty epic.
Sad But True
a good metal album that sets the stage for a lot of bad metal albums.
Ok; hark rock but ptetty good hard rock
In high school, my friends and I listened to enter Sandman and nothing else matters a lot and thought we were really hard core. I’ll always love those. The others, not so much.
I like the covers on Angry Workout better.
This album is what I imagine those rock fans that stick out their tongues and hold the rock signs listen to. It's got the classic yelling metal rock that I just cannot rock with. I was actually pleased that there were slower melodies in some songs in this album. Those were the ones that I actually enjoyed. If the album had more of that, I would genuinely like it a lot more.
It's kinda boring
Starts off pretty good but I ended up bored after a few songs
Not their best album by a long shot. Frankly generic almost to the point of Disney-level corniness. Maybe I just don’t know enough rock/metal history to judge this album’s place in time. Enter Sandman and The Unforgiven are my favorites from this one, but most of the rest sounds the same. 6.5/10
Some classics but sometimes a bit too heavy for me.
pwease no steppy lol
I know Metallica are more thrash metal and I prefer to stay within the prog-metal genre as I like a good tune. This however pleasantly surprised me it sounds gothic, dark and on songs like Unforgiven very melodic. Definitely will check out more from this band.
I can see the appeal and definitely enjoyed listening to this album. It's just not for me so much.
Great solo guitar moments and drums Quite dark First listen loved it. Second listen not so bowled over. Some great tracks in there though.
Not as good as the Cliff Burton era Metallica.
Some absolute era / genre defining bangers but also a fair amount of stuff I don’t love. Certainly deserves a place here but nearer the lower end of the scale. Extra star for helping Ant and his relationship issues…
It's a very well crafted and produced album, they achieved a very specific and consistent sound. Their sound here makes their brand of metal more accessible and mainstream. The production and the mixes are excellent, they sound very crisp and it lets the performances shine. Instrumentally they're great too, really liked the drumming and the guitar solos. Hetfield's vocal tone is very characteristic and well known by now, and it works great for their sound. I liked how heavy they sound at times, specially towards the end of the album. Thematically it's a bit dark but it's good that they get personal. The topics are questionable for me, "Of Wolf And Man" is a bit much, and "Don't Tread On Me" not only hasn't aged well, but the whole patriotic spirit isn't for me at all. I also disliked the opening riff. My favourite track was "My Friend Of Misery". The classic tracks are pretty good too. Overall it's a pretty well crafted and cohesive record. But I also feel it works better if you focus on the music and ignore the content of the lyrics.
I appreciate the attempt to craft songs that defy the typical thrash metal formula, adding musical flourishes and rhythmic changes to build a soundscape that adds drama. Yet there are still few melodic lines and the lyrics are often less than compelling. The Unforgiven, Don’t Tread on Me, and Nothing Else Matters were the highlights for me.
Nothing really tickles me here, drums are mostly uninspired, some solid riffs but very middling 3
It’s the only Metallica album i know.
I respect them. Good sound and I was surprised how many songs I was familiar with from this album.
I think I like the faster thrashier riffs and songs better that the half-time ones which feel like Ford truck adverts. Overall though it just seems quite mid, I haven't heard any of their early-mid 80s albums, but I'd imagine they are similar to this, but probably better, and way before. It just kinda feels outdated despite a lack of context. Obviously they are all incredible musicians, but there's quite a lack of variety. I think to put this alongside other 90s metal like Pantera or sepultura or something, those just feel much more 'progressive' and varied than this (in terms of instrumentally). I do think this is probably better than that slayer album from the other day, as that had absolutely zero variety. I will admit that it gets quite a lot better towards the ending. Its also way better than S&M, which I still ponder how that made it into the dude's book in the first place. Favourite songs: The unforgiven, wherever I may roam, through the never, nothing else matters, of wolf and man, the god that failed, my friend of misery Overall around 6/10
The good songs are really good but the slow songs are bad
Good metal/rock album.
Classic head banging fare. Too Much yelling for me
Did not age well
Not my favorite Metallica album
Never had anything for Metallica. I don't think that will change anymore
'Exit light / Enter night.' Except that this night has little of the color or the confusion that makes night an exciting, unpredictable part of our lives. I've seen interviews w/ Metallica, and James Hetfield in particular always struck me as a kindhearted individual, but Metallica's formulas don't do it for me. While I find myself nodding my head occasionally, their riffs are heavy but they aren't bluesy, i.e., they don't approach Sabbath's soulful metal. Kirk is clearly a gifted guitarist, but his solos are perfunctory, and Ulrich's a dense and uninteresting drummer. Most damningly, Hetfield is a corny lyricist, no matter how sincere: 'Never free, never me / So I dub thee unforgiven.' I do, however, appreciate the nod to West Side Story on 'Don't Tread on Me.'
2.5/5
Some absolute classics on here but it’s quite bloated and their older stuff is better.
Ok, but I found myself frequently zoning out. It was quite silly at times-- eg. some song about how cool it is to be a wolf, and a USSR diss track.
I don't know how long I can listen to this kind of stuff, but it kinda slapped ngl.
Such a solid classic band. Like the beginning of a tough sound that paved the way for sound garden, RATM, and others.
I like the first song slaying Sad but true- so true Forth song intro my ear likey Nr 8 is very soothing and me is loving it i enjoyed the album very mucho, guddo, greato
Prefer Metallica's thrash-ier stuff but a lot of great riffs on here. 6.5/10. Lot of same sounding songs but not a bad way to spend an hour
Crisp production. Heard some before. “Sandman” overexposed by now.
Metal music is cool, but Metallica in this album focuses so much on power chords, it's like they're brute forcing everything. I prefer more riffs and melodic phrases with the heavier driving force in metal/ heavy rock. 2.6
Massive album. I dig the first half but got tired with the very polished production.
Pretty good but couldve been <50 minutes
songs are a little long, other than that its not bad
Megadeth is better
The first of the post 80s Metallica albums, and arguably the transition to a more mainstream metal sound. The weakest of their first 5 records IMO. A few classics (Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters) none of the rest of the album cracks my personal Metallica top 20
One of the definitive albums of that year and influenced so many bands. Not my cup of tea but, ehhh… fun listen.
Riffs for days. It’s good, but not one I’d listen too all the way through.
Fine
Masterpiece classic
Off to never streaming land.
Better than that other Metallica Album.
I tried.... I really tried... I just couldn't get in to it. There a were a handful of good songs, but the rest was just repetitive and dull
Pues ok
Те саме можна сказати про Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses від Slipknot, Come Clarity від In Flames чи Sempiternal від Bring Me The Horizon.
No one was more surprised than me to find out I didn’t hate this.
Meh, it’s good and I understand the praise, but there’s a reason why their earlier thrash stuff is more acclaimed
Starting with Enter Sandman is a bold move. I love that song, so everything after that felt a bit like diminishing returns. (My ears pricked up a bit at Don't Tread On Me though - I wasn't expecting the lyrical flag waving or the musical nod to West Side Story.)
Metallica's most radio friendly record. While you can't argue that the songwriting is still exceedingly strong, and the hits from here are more popular than their other albums, I still can't help but lament the "smooth-around-the-edges" hard rock sound this record took in comparison to the exciting, bold thrash from their beginning. If I'm listening to a Metallica album, it's not for the acoustic slow ballads, as good as they are on this record. Best Tracks: - Enter Sandman - Holier Than Thou - The Unforgiven Worst Tracks: - Of Wolf And Man - The Struggle Within Rating: 7/10
ts so lame bruh 2.5

Good to listen to this consciously, opens really strongly but does dry out towards the end. Nothing else matters felt almost country to me on this listen.
Great driving music, love the front half
It's an odd choice to include as honestly its an okay album compared to some of their others.
It's metalica - it has no business being only one song and still an hour...wait, it's multiple songs!? Listenable incel anthems. Not awful, not spectacular. 3/5
A slightly less 'thrash' album which l find a bit more accessible than Master of Puppets, as a non-metal fan. As with the other Metallica albums I've heard on this list, I did find it a bit samey after a while. The riffs are good, solos rock, the vocals are strong and the songs have a great energy. I found this better than MOP as there are some gentle moments to break it up (like the classic Nothing Else Matters) Still don't think I'd listen to this repeatedly though as I was ready for the end around the time of 'The God That Failed'. Capped at 3 as it's too much Metallica for me
thought i wouldn't like it but wasn't bad at all
Enter Sandman 4 Sad but True 4.1 Holier than Thou 3.5 The Unforgiven 3.6 Wherever I May Roam 4.1 Don't Tread on Me 3 Through the Never 3.3 Nothing Else Matters 3.6 Of Wolf and Man 3.3 The God That Failed 3.4 My Friend of Misery 3 The Struggle Within 3 Score: 3.491666667
It's alright, 200% energy all way through. For loud noises
3,2
This is like the easy listening of metal. I'm certain it was innovative in some way. Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman are iconic metal songs but the album is just kinda meh in overall feel. I think this feeling has to do with the fact that there has been 3 decades of development within this genre with increasing popularity since this album was released. Overall enjoyable, but feels a bit simple for for the genre overall.
#476 : 08/05/2025 : Metallic (the Black Album) Finally I'm into something good, I actually have this album too. Enter sandman was my happy place back in the early 90's loved it then and still crank up the volume when I play it today. The rest of the piece is quite ordinary, but with this they've done a pretty decent job. 235 Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Enter Sandman is my favourite track obvs.
I'm going in with an open mind. And you know what? It wasn't bad. I might actually listen to more of their stuff eventually.
Quite average to be honest, not off putting but not great either. The cover version of John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’ fits nicely as it doesn’t really know what it’s about, and neither does this album.
I get it. Huge band. Big, heavy sound but honestly it leaves me cold. Maybe everyone copied them, but they sound formulaic and staid.
Brr brr exit line
Ok. It's got Enter Sandman...know this. Rest is new to me. Just wasn't in to Metal back in the day, but got to say there is quite a depth to this. It's good. Still struggling with an entire albums worth at once, but can see why people are into this now
...very metallica like
I don’t love this type of music, but this was quite ok to listen to once. There was maybe one or two songs I could listen to more and a few tracks had words or ideas that I liked.
I dunno, man. If I'm being so totally honest, Metallica just doesn't really do it for me. Enter Sandman reminds me of soccer practice and my soccer coaches and the rest just got super old. I'm definitely hearing influence of Metallica riffs on KG thrash metal which is fun but I think I want my thrash to be more like "acid thrash". It makes it feel less... conservative.
I'm certain that I'm missing something here, but its so hard for me to get into Metallica. I used to really like ...And Justice For All, but I don't even know if I would anymore. A lot of the composition here is pretty cool. Big drums, cool guitar solos. James Hetfield's voice kind of sounds like a meme to me though, and that's probably because its been parodied so many times. And the chugging thrash guitars also sound kind of like a meme to me. So its hard for me to totally get into this.
Classic just not my type of music
Mid as hell ngl. Couple of bangers but they all sound the same. Maybe it’s just cuz I’m not a metal head.
it’s a good album, very consistent all around, but metallic just doesn’t hit as hard for me as other bands do 3/5
It's a classic metal album, but it did nowt for me.
It was fine. Pretty corny and self-indulgent but I can't deny there are some bangers on here. I still think Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters are the best songs on it which are the only two I knew before I listened so was it worth it? I guess it was nice to hear, but yeah I doubt I'm coming back to ever listen to this in full.
Such a bad turn from the first 4 albums. There are still good songs but you can pretty much ignore this band from this album onward. Will I listen to again: 25%
Some really good tracks here but still leans a bit too far into the loud roaring to be a 4, I think. A high 3.
Definitely an album I had heard before and a solid one. It’s been a very long time since I have heard this one in full. The guitar solos took a little while to get used to. I liked reading the making of the album information. It was cool have that insight before this listen to get a better sense for the mix of the classic Metallica songs with the newer more evolved sounds. Song stand outs for me would be Nothing Else Matters and The Unforgiven.
#555. Metallica made four of the best metal albums out there in a row, so it's kinda disappointing that they so abruptly changed direction like this. They've made some truly awful music over the years, but this first foray into radio rock is certainly the least terrible. One could argue that this could be a four star album, but I'm going to subtract one because I hate Lars Ulrich so much. 3/5: sellouts
Not a metallica fan but I guess this had been quintessential material
Me he guardado las más conocidas «Enter Sandman», «The Unforgiven» y «Nothing Else Matters».
Much better than the previous record I listened to: Justice for all. I liked the rougher themes, the guitarwork was sharper and more well rounded. Overall very impressed for a metal record, and the opener... good lord, listening this made me feel cool(I'm not). Favorite track: Enter Sandman. Overall score: 8.2/10.
I’m something of a Metallica apologist. But this one has slipped for me over the years. I have a ton of burnout factor going against the hits, and a number of the album cuts aren’t all that strong. What’s more is that this is one of the few key albums you can trace back to as a direct forefather over 2+ generations of the shittiest mainstream heavy rock imaginable. This is a solid enough album.
Not my vibe
han am morge eigentli beschlosse dasi‘s nöd wird lose (us offesichtliche gründ) aber han mi denn doch zämmegrisse und de grossteil devo glost – paar tracks hani gskippt to be fair nothing else matters beinhaltet en grosse nostalgiefaktor ih mir und isch es eidütigs 10i, enter sandman obvious banger & gsehni absolut de reiz dra… bim rest hört denn de gspass bi mir aber au scho uf das heisst: liebi 3 metallic lackierti BMWs
Never before has an album been the cause of so many early 2000s teens getting sued by their favorite band. Typically known as the "Black Album" by fans, this is a classic from the most prominent of the "Big 4" of metal, home to several headbanger classics like "Enter Sandman" and "The Unforgiven". I'm 100% sure this is a favorite album of many far-right idiots, due to its use of the Gadsden flag snake and the track "Don't Tread on Me", despite core members of the band publicly denouncing Trump's politics. In the last third of the album, we get a break from the standard heavy riffs and growly vocals, taking us to an almost pensive place with "Nothing Else Matters". While a classic, this album does suffer somewhat from too many songs sounding too similar--indeed, 2/3 (or more, depending on source) of the album is in E- or A-minor and a similar bpm. Favorite track: Nothing Else Matters Hidden gem: Wherever I May Roam 3.5/5 stars
Some of Metallica's best-known songs like The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters hold up. The slow and measured sound on this album is a good match for Hetfield's lyrics. They might be "edgy," but they get the point across. The instrumental breaks and guitar solos are unique and well-executed; the composition of this album is its biggest strength, lacking only from its reliance on repetitive structures that become apparent when listening to the album in its entirety. I found that The God That Failed is a favorite of mine upon a full listening, and listening with headphones in stereo brings out some nice touches. I'm not usually interested in heavy metal, but Metallica made this album easy to listen to with their new, streamlined sound.
First half better than expect. 2nd half a bit samey and heavier after nothing else matters. “Too American” says C
I can appreciate this, but I don’t want to have to.
The only Metallica song I had listened before today was Enter Sandman, so I suppose this is as good an introduction as any. The music is about 4/5-- although I found it somewhat monotonous by the 11th song; by that point it was all blurring together to me-- and the lyrics are about 2/5, so 3/5 evens it out. I will say though that while Hetfield is not a particularly skilled lyricist, when he's working with more direct emotional expressions instead of trying to make metaphors etc I actually think the lyrics are alright-to-good, such as in Nothing Else Matters and The Unforgiven.
Can an album feel potato? I gave it a clean shot, and some of it still hits some, but overall the album just feels dated, old, played out, it doesn’t hold up. Better bands doing it at the time, bands blowing them out the water in sounds to this day.
I was a huge Metallica black album fan back when I was in High School around 98. However, coming back to this record after putting on the shelf it has lost its luster, some good songs here but doesn't hit as hard as it did when I was a teenager.
Starts off strong with Enter Sandman and from there it is a downward hill. I fucking love that song though. I remember liking the Nothing else matters as a moody kid a lot too. I guess I'm healed.
This records presents some nice riffs and catchy vocals melodies and it is heavy but it also drags some songs for too long. If it wasn't for this last point, I would give this album a higher rating, even after having grown tired of them
From a guitar and percussion pov I can see why people think highly of this album. As someone who enjoys a good tune, however, it was just a little too yelley for me, and after a while the tracks began sounding the same. I was getting serious de ja vu in “The Struggle Within”.
Ride The Lightning > Master of Puppets > Black Album 7/10
2 metallica albums in less than 10 days from this website should not be allowed.
This album was a very nostalgic listen for me. Not my favourite Metallica era, more stadium dad rock at this point really, but it can’t be denied that these boys can write some great hooks and melodies.
I actually don't mind Metallica.
I was in high school when this came out so I am condemned to know every single note on this thing. It's remarkable that every last track here got airplay where I live. But I never put this album on and I never really need to hear any of these songs. Master of Puppets is a 5 for me, so this has to be like a 3.
This feels like one of those albums that would grow on me on repeat listens, especially since that's what happened with the title track, "Enter Sandman."
5/10
Enjoyable, but I can't think of an album that's so ripe for parody.
Not my thing but I understand how this is an important album.
Yeeeaaaheeaaaaggghhh
7/10
Great album. Edging on 4, but metal/hard rock not really my bag anymore.
I love how, if you walk into a musical instrument shop, there's nearly always someone playing the Enter Sandman riff to test out an electric guitar. If it's not a teenage customer, it's a staff member. It's a hugely satisfying riff, with a weirdly danceable rhythm. A bit like heavy goth, perhaps. Anyway. I've always loved Enter Sandman; it was love at first listen, and noone was more surprised than me, as my only prior feelings about Metallica were that I'd thoroughly disliked Master of Puppets when a keen boyfriend played it to me in 1987. Fast Metallica are still not for me. I'm much happier with the more measured, heavy riff stuff. Saying that, not all of this album is really all that good. Sorry. I found some of the songs a bit naff, despite the musical ability on display. Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters - they're all up my street. I guess I only like Metallica-lite, not that "lite" describes those songs very well.
There were many times in the album I was impressed by the writing and lyrics, but something internally in me just had a hard time taking a yelling man deeply seriously and earnestly as anything more than angry. Which is the reason I generally avoid metal anyways, but regardless I really liked a lot of it artistically because of the lyricism or musical riffs, I just wouldn’t listen for entertainment (such as holier than thou). Although overall I did like it more than I expected to. One favorite has got to be the unforgiven because it dealt with my issue with many of the other songs that there’s little to no variation in singing tone, and when he sings in the chorus of this song, along with a great guitar instrumental made it legitimately enjoyable for me.
Well, I expected a bit more from this one. 'Enter Sandman' is amazing, such an iconic banger, but the rest of the album is a bit lacking. It's quite catchy, and not 'bad', but it just doesn't do enough for me.
not the best metallica album
Fine
Would probably be more into this if I hadn't just heard all the hits from it two days ago on S&M. It's fine, it's Metallica. I'm always impressed with how technically proficient these guys are on their instruments.
Heavy Metal Rock, 1991 -> 3
Opens strong with riffs galore and wah powered solos flying in from every corner. Runs out of steam by the end of the album as the growls never cease. A lot to like but shave off 4 songs and things improve.
A few good tracks but there's too much of the same to go higher than a 3
This era of Metal has always been the epitome of "I want to be a cool guy" music in my mind. When the spandex and leotards of Hair Metal stopped being cool, the cool guys wanted to be tough and flocked to Metallica. When Hip Hop became thoroughly mainstream, the dorks who were masquerading as tough guys suddenly tried to bite that and made the mistake of Nu Metal. This record, (aside from Limp Bizkit maybe), is the pinnacle of faux-cool-guy-music. I'm sure in its time this album was super cool. But, listening to it now, I only see PUG sunglasses, spiky hair gel, Tapout t-shirts, and my friend's weird dads that reeked of cigarettes and cheap beer. I don't dislike metal by any stretch. I love bands like Sabbath, Death, and a lot of death metal and hardcore of recent years - currently, I think the genre is in one of the best states it's ever been. This record has some solid performances (except for Lars) and good songwriting. However, the whole hour runtime just feels like a joke. They're playing characters, trying way too hard. It's pop music in black leather and chains pretending it isn't pop music. In conclusion, Lars sucks. 6/10
I tried listening to this before 8 am. That was my mistake.
Fine. Sandman and unforgiven. Feels pretty formulaic.
Ok, men gillar inte metal så mycket.
Just wrote a long review and lost it. Summary - my uncle listened to this in his nice car and it sounded great. Great production on this. Not into depressed rocking or spooky/death themes. Angry works (see RATM). Classic Rock generally is my kind of rock. Metallica is good gym music in spots. Throw a dumbell at someone in a heavy metal frenzy. I may have been wrong about Sitar on Screaming Trees, but there is for sure one here on Where I May Roam.
As a fan of the 1990s-2000s New York Yankees, Enter Sandman gets me fucking jacked up. 3 stars on the board right out of the gate. MARIANO RIVERA IS COMING TO TURN OUT THE LIGHTTTTSSSSSAAAAAHHHHHH Otherwise, their run-of-the-mill metal songs (85% of the album) just feel like noise to me. (One exception: I liked The Unforgiven as a nice change of pace from the DUNDUNDUNDUNDUNDUN guitar on pretty much every other song). For my metal money, I'll take a wailing Iron Maiden over a growling/snarling Metallica. At least Iron Maiden feels whimsically fascinated with the devil. Metallica just feels self-serious in a pathetic way. Stop trying to impress me with how tough you are Fun fact: Lars Ulrich's son is my wife's patient and she says he's a really nice guy [sorry for violating HIPAA but it's just braces]. I also just love that this fuckin METALHEAD lives in beautiful Marin County. Hey Lars!
Metallica definitely rocks but also kind of sucks (by my taste). The music is okay, though all kind of feels the same rhythmically. Hetfield’s singing grates on me big time, adding an extra grunting syllable to words, I don’t get it.
Very generic and mainstream
-I’ll preface this by saying I don’t think I’ll ever really be able to get THAT into heavy metal, especially the more mainstream / ever so slightly corny stuff like Megadeath (sorry) -this has some great highlights though. Enter Sandman absolutely fucks, and the other songs are pretty consistently good across the board even if not many of them spoke to me -Favorites are Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, and My Friend of Misery
I mean, it's Metallica... I'm not in high school and I wasn't born yet in the '80s so they don't really do anything for me. It's fine, and I did like some of the songs back when I was in high school (Unforgiven, Sandman, etc.), but I'd never listen to it now. It gets a 3.
Metallica good.
6/10
Heard this album before and again today but I still am really ehhhh on Metallica.
3/5 Listenable; more melodic that I had expected.
Favs were nothing else matters, of wolf and man, and struggle within
This is the third Metallica album that has popped up for me in my first 20 days. The first two were beyond awful, sounding more like a cliched attempt to spoof Spinal Tap itself rather than a good-faith attempt to make interesting music. This album's actually pretty good. It has some standard heavy metal numbers, but it also has a lot of variety, and it held my attention. I'd listen to it again.
Very good singles and deep-cuts, but God, Metallica is overrated af. I love The Unforgiven and Sad But True, but Nothing Else Matters sucks tbh.
In retrospect, listening to this while answering Slack messages was probably not the best environment for this album
Iconic album, but I can't really get past the gravelly screechy style of vocals for this genre. Most songs sound similar to me...I considered whether I should give up on the album early, but I think I need to stick to listening through the full albums.
Great instrumentation. Could not take any of the vocals seriously. Nothing else matters saved it from a 2 star
Sandman is cool, the rest is Metallica at their mediocre best.
Iconic tracks. Was never that into Metallica during my long haired days but there are some of their songs on their earlier albums I really like. This one doesn't have any standouts for me and can be a bit one-pace for large periods. 2.5
Not bad. Not for me. I like Metallica in smaller doses. After 5 songs I'm tired of it
Kind of boring overall
I'm shocked that I didn't hate this.
esta ok
Wow. It was alright, but nothing too great. Enter Sandman was easily. the highlight. I am so sick of rock man :'}. Dear 1001 Album Generator gods, STOP GIVING ME ROCK ALBUMS. Anyway, tomorrows the last day of 2024, lets hope its a good one. 3/5
Haven't listened to "my favorite" Metallica album in years. Don't quite know if it exactly holds up. I'll admit it lost my attention mid way through. But the speedy songs at the end were pretty solid and got me back in, it's still really good honestly 6.5/10 . Solid riffs
Starts off with a great classic song but then feels like a very one tone album. They have a fast song and a slow song and the guitars always chug in the same rhythm and it's all very samey.
Turns out I know more Metallica than I thought I did
It is very difficult to not give this a 5. I listened to it twice. The first time was at work in the background and it was a wonderful tardis that too my back to the old days. The second time was in the dark, with headphones, after a few, and I was bored to tears by Holier Than Thou. With 33 years of history with this record being my gateway into metal, I have hear way to many higher quality performances and would rather be listening to any of those. I will never forget how important this record is. But some members of the rhythm sections should not be in charge of the mix, and more creative in their job.
Enter night.
Not a fan but appreciate Enter Sandman, especially as someone who lived in NYC when Mariano Rivera was the Yankees' superstar closer and would walk on to this song.
Has more creativity and ideas than many metal albums I will rate higher than it, so I have to commend it for that, it just doesn't have songwriting or production good enough to match, guitar should be louder. B
Not my kind of music.
A couple of classics, but a bit slow
HI ITS DAVE AND FUCKO IN THE MORNING HERE ON TRIPLE M THAT WAS THE FOOEYS WITH THE BEST OF YOU TO KICK OFF YOUR MORNING ON THE JOBSITE TODAYS TOPIC OF DISCUSSION - HOW EARLY IS TOO EARLY TO GET DRUNK CALL IN AND LET US KNOW NEXT UP IS METALLICA WITH NOTHING ELSE MATTERS, ONE OF THREE METALLICA SONGS WE PLAY EVERY FUCKING DAY
A couple good singles, even a good album at times but it fails to come together 6/10 Fav tracks - Sad but True, The Unforgiven, the God that failed
First listen. Heard the big hits before. The rest was kind of just ok. Regardless not a bad album.
Najlepsza piosenka: Enter sandman Fajna solówka w połowie my friend of mistery.
First heard of and saw this lot as a support band in 83. Really didn't rate them. They have however come on in leaps and bounds since then. Either that or I have mellowed in my opinions. I have seen them since at a fans only gig in the dome where they were quite reasonable. This album, known as the black album, is quite a decent one. Kicking off with probably their best known song Enter Sandman. Other than that there are two bright spots, Sad But True and Nothing Else Matters. The rest was mediocre. It's worth a high 3, but doesn't quite rate a 4.
When this album came out, I disliked it immediately. Mainly due to the fact that Enter Sandman was being played NON-STOP on every medium available to assault my ears. Granted, it's a good song, but overexposure caused me to really dislike this whole album. I was big into Metallica and especially thought their Cliff Burton works (Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Matser of Puppets) were brilliant and probably their best work. I did like And Justice for All a lot as well, and thought it was their most polished piece of work, and they finally got attention from MTV with their video for the song "One". When the Black Album came out, it was non stop hype. I bought the CD the first day it was available and listened to it all. I was impressed with a couple of tunes, but overall I hated it compared to their older works. Over time, I've listened to this album more and more and have grown to appreciate all of it. It's not their best, nor is it ground breaking in anything other than putting a heavy metal band in the mainstream media's eyes. Can't Miss Tracks: Sad But True Wherever I May Roam Of Wolf and Man Nothing Else Matters 3.25/5 which translates to a 3/5 on this scale.
There are some classics in here, but it also feels a bit samey and cringy. You can see why this appeals to 12 year olds
The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters ...aún así ...
Best thing about this is that VT uses Sandman before every home game. Wherever I may Roam is great, but there are too many ballads and slow songs here. Not my Metallica of old. I get it, bands evolve but they evolved off my turntable.
Good Stuff
Metallica slow down (mostly) and simplify, trading their thrash metal sound for more of a big hard rock sound with greater mass appeal and more introspective lyrics. Some solid riffs and still plenty of intensity, just a different type of intensity that's subtler and more internal. It’s a good album but I also find it to get a bit boring, as there’s not as much variety (riff/tempo/rhythm changes that existed in previous Metallica albums) to hold my attention completely. Perhaps it was influential to metal bands to show they could have a broader, non-thrashy approach. Sometimes the results are strong but also sometimes unimpactful. It just doesn’t rip as hard as their earlier stuff.
Being in the middle of raising teen boys, I was familiar with this band. Although it wasn't my kind of music, I can enjoy it now, especially since it is not their earlier loud and obnoxious music. This album is tamed in comparison and listenable.
Not really my thing but totally fine. Some catchy enough bits and pieces and I imagine that if I spent more time with it I’d probably get into it a bit more.
The first half is actually pretty strong...I surprisingly found myself enjoying it. Metallica can write surprisingly catchy tunes. 3.5/5
Fine. Not a particularly big fan of Metallica.
It’s a long album and while I like Metallica, too much of it is pretty brutal. If it had been about 30 minutes shorter, I could have gotten behind it. I like it, but will only take in the highlights.
Enter Sandman That is all
I think I liked this one more than '...And Justice for All', but like many of Metallica's albums and due to its hour-plus runtime, my mind was numbed by the time I got to those last four songs. I think I was more conscious of that mind-numbing here though - I sort of enjoyed it. But all my general problems with Metallica, like my impartialness towards Hetfield's vocals, and the very cut-and-dry sound palate, are all present here - but they're sort of well masked behind the elements of this band's music that I DO enjoy. The ballads are still the highlights, obviously 'Nothing Else Matters' is great but I also really liked 'The Unforgiven' with its criticisms of oppressive religious organizations' stifling of free thought. The story behind this song is quite sad as well. The harder moments are solid too - I was never a big 'Enter Sandman' enjoyer myself but I get the song's appeal. The best moment for me was the entirety of 'My Friend of Misery', it came at a point in the album where I was already sort of tired - but it felt like an electric shock with just how varied, sharp, and twisted the guitar tones were alongside that ever-changing song structure. The wall of guitars of 'Hollier Than Thou' and Hammett's noisy solo on 'That God That Failed' are two other highlights that stuck with me. Once again, it's the album's length that got me. Some genuinely good music here nevertheless, and maybe I'm finally growing more accustomed to Metallica's music - 4 albums in.
I can't overstate how uninterested I am in listening to Metallica for an hour, but here we are. "Enter Sandman" is a banger but its lyrics really take me out, which is generally true of Metallica songs. Thankfully Hetfield is difficult to understand most of the time. "Don't Tread on Me" is straight-up corny. "Nothing Else Matters" surprised me with its sincerity and relatively gentle arrangement. I really like the sonic embellishments in the latter half of "My Friend of Misery" and how the guitar textures layer over each other. The guitar solos are some of my favorite parts, which is unusual for me when I'm listening to metal. I liked it fine, so I shouldn't be so snide. I probably won't revisit in full again, but I do have to admit that this is great driving music. However, it is certainly redundant and could use some paring down. Highlights: Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam, Nothing Else Matters, My Friend of Misery
I really liked Metallica in my teenage years, but after a few listens, it feels kind of meh. Enter Sandman, Sad But True, The Unforgiven, and of course, the overplayed Nothing Else Matters are hits, but the rest of the album feels pretty bland.
A couple famous songs and nothing else notable
The hits were good, the extras were definitely extra. I get now why everyone says this isn't a great album. It's not, but it does have a few bangers.
