Reviews (page 4 of 11)
Very nice
Neil Young at his very best. Beautiful songs performed with incredible care. This is an album that is free of time and space. After The Gold Rush doesn't need to prove anything.
Love this album. Brings up a lot of nostalgia. I can clearly remember my dad putting this on when I was a kid. Neil's voice is such a beautiful and familiar sound.
Evergreen Neil album, the soundtrack to the exact moment when the hippy revolution fizzled out and the freaks all got proper jobs and mortgages - though still smoked dope. If this was the soundtrack to a film it would be the key party scene in The Ice Storm.
Cool neil
this whole thing is making me realise I absolutely adore neil young, haven't heard a bad album yet
This Neil Young album is arguably better than Harvest, with every song being great. My favorite song is ‘Southern Man’; it’s got a great melody and lyrics, and it’s way better then ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, which it inspired. The rest of the album is no slouch, though. This is one of the Neil Young albums I have less to say about, so bye.
5.0 + Been listening to this record continuously for the better part of a week and it keeps sounding better and better.
Exactly what I needed today and what I want when putting on Neil Young or any of his pals: go lucky, catchy music one can always listen to
i’m a genuine sucker for both neil young and folk rock sung in a kinda weird voice. this is both, and it rules. also the lyricism
I love Neil Young and I love some of his music but I only like lots of it.
Album 110 of 1001 Neil Young - After the Gold Rush Rating : 5 / 5 Favorite Track : After the Gold Rush I like my Neil Young. This one doesn't disappoint. Great collection of songs. May be pushing it with the '5' but I listed through twice more and am good with it.
Another one of Neil's classics, perhaps a little gentler than Harvest except for the absolutely scathing Southern Man. Love it.
Very good
10/10 one of Neil Young’s best albums some really fantastic songs throughout
Years ago after listening to the Rivals podcast on Neil Young vs Lynyrd Skynyrd, I listened to Southern Man for the first time and thought it was so boring. This time it was so good
totally masterpiece
An absolute powerhouse album of Americana. The consistency across not just this record, but Young's entire discography is something that very few artists match. The sound is always HIM, but always changing and bringing new, interesting ideas. I appreciate how this album takes its time while still being tight.
One of the finest golden hours from one of the most consistently captivating songwriters and guitarists of all time.
tellement un classique, on peut pas passer à côté. 5
Some of Neil Young’s best work. The title track is exceptional, evocative songwriting
A paleta sonora do álbum é rica, apresentando violão, piano, violão lap steel e harmonias vocais exuberantes. Essa diversidade cria uma experiência auditiva única e envolvente.
Beautiful, haunting and heartbreaking, this collection of songs show Young at his finest .
Classic album of a legend, before he tried to pull off some heavy metal, punk stunts in his later career... Folk rock at its best!
classis a little bit high lol
Two broke Niels in a row, this one is good too but some fucking variety
Neil wasn’t even that old when he made this but already starting the grumpy activist thing. Boy the guy really knows how to turn a phrase. Southern Man is so famous of course but I’m partial to the title track. Check out the version on Natalie Merchant’s live album if you want to be blown away.
Even as a young man, Neil Young was a whiny oul bollocks. He joins Paul Brady, Bob Dylan and a select few others that I hold in high regard for their songwriting talent, but whose voices I despise. Even at this early stage Neil was fond of a dirge - they make up most of the album. Only Love Can Break Your Heart is a classic, but I prefer Saint Etienne's take, as is after the goldrush. Well written, well recorded songs. This could have been a 5 if someone else was singing.
it was nice but sounded the same for the most part, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would
Neil young is apparently prominent on here with good reason- this great album is an example. It's complex enough for the musicologist and audiophile but simple enough to cover in your garage... or where this album was made, a basement
I'm game to listen to some Neil Young any day, especially if it has songs that piss off Lynyrd Skynyrd and stuff like Don't Let It Bring You Down - the kind of song that other bands would have built a career on
Non il migliore di Young ma comunque un bell’album
A truly passionate folk rock album that is much more tender than I had expected. It’s a reflective and contemplative listen that really holds meaning. And bless short albums that don’t try to overstay their welcome.
I know I've never listened to this as an album before, but it felt strangely familiar and I'm not sure why. Not my favourite Young album on this list, but enjoyable enough and I listened multiple times to it.
11 songs 1 saved. Decent albumn would listen to again on road trip. Grows on you
Not my favorite Neil album but man this one is great
Really liked it :) bisschen gechillter vibe
Neil knows what's up
I want to start with the disclaimer that I have never considered myself a Neil Young fan. Sure, I respect his songwriting abilities and agree with his political sentiments, but unless he was harmonizing with Crosby, Stills, and Nash, I didn't care for his voice. That all changed for me today. Getting this album on a weekend meant I had longer to listen. Rather than dismiss it as "just another Neil Young album," I gave it a good, honest listen. Then, I listened again. By now, I have played the album through at least five times, have downloaded it to my library, and have added some songs to various playlists. The harmonies and gentle melodies are mesmerizing, and of course "Southern Man" gets right to the point, to which I say bravo! "When You Dance I Can Really Love" is my favorite track - alongside "Southern Man," as I tend to prefer songs in minor keys. So glad I got to hang out with Neil Young this weekend, and that he helped to change my mind about his artistry.
A couple of big hits and the rest pretty decent Neil Young. Enjoyed listening
Some of Neil’s best known songs. I’m gonna leave 5 for a CSNY at some point I’m sure but really solid.
Somehow a 25-year-old Neil young wrote an album full of songs that can soothe my rapidly aging soul.
Uncle Neil on day one. We are off to a good start. I’m familiar with a few songs but I’ve never listed to this album end-to-end until today.
7.5/10 Best songs: Southern Man, Don't Let It Bring You Down, When You Dance I Can Really Love This is an interesting album - some of the songs are absolutely amazing, while others are grating and, frankly, hurt my ears. What's the issue? Well, Neil Young's voice, of course. Sometimes he leans into this almost winsome, nasal tone that I absolutely despise. Other times he doesn't. (And other other times he does, but the music is so good it makes up for it.) I think this would be a 5-star album with a different singer, but the vocals bring this down several stars... snd then the music brings it back up. It's a difficult album to rate.
I think this one will go in the four star bucket. It's a folky album that I think I'd enjoy more upon further listen and analysis of the lyrics. As for now it's better off as background noise for me. Not really a huge fan of Neil's voice, but this also reminds me of Neil's friend Joni who's voice struck me as a bit different at first and ended up being by one of my favorites ever. Okay okay okay. 4 stars.
*Country folk After the gold rush Southern man Only love can break your heart
another classic from Mr young. nice set of delicate songs
Très chouette dans le genre lamentation folk
Hard to give it a fair review after just one listen, needs more time to digest.
I can’t believe it… I don’t regret listening to a folk rock album. It’s finally happened… But seriously, not a bad album at all. There’s a couple songs that I like though nothing really stands out to me throughout the whole album. Nice listen though, even through a migraine. I’m so pleased that I am giving it 3 whole stars and considering giving it another listen. Favorite tracks: Tell Me Why & Only Love Can Break Your Heart. Edit: I took another listen to tracks that I wasn’t sure about, and I’m adding another star. New favorites: Tell Me Why, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Oh Lonesome Me, & Don’t Let It Bring You Down. And ya know what, I like his voice.
Good stuff!
I was today years old when I learned about the full context behind "Southern Man" and Lynyrd Skynyrd's (unabashedly support of racism within the lyrics of) "Sweet Home Alabama". Damn shame the latter became a drunken bar anthem. Neil's vocal style can often be hit or miss for me, but the songs are superbly crafted and beautifully performed. As another reviewer put it, "fragile and timeless." Well said. Excellent album.
I like the piano playing on this album and his guitar work is always pretty cool. I'm a 3.5 with this but it was interesting enough to call it a 4.
After seven Neil albums, I think I can safely say that I like a lot of his music, but he's probably never quite getting to 5 territory for me. His music is always technically done well, and I enjoyed a lot of the songs on this, but it wasn't swoon-inducing. Still a good album though!
Fell asleep to this one on the plane home from Montreal. Not because the music bored me. It was just early and I hadn’t slept much.
First time listening to a full Neil album. Big fan, could see this growing into a 5 for me.. on the fence though. Lovely lyrics, voice, and guitar playing. Can really feel his soul and emotion throughout. 8.5/10
I've listened to some Neil Young, in all his forms, but had never actually listened to this. Not my favorite Neil Young (Harvest Moon, which isn't even on this list, would take that distinction), but this is quite good. Added to library.
not my favorite neil young (that would be _on the beach_ and all crazy horse stuff) but still a great album.
Another Neil Young album to add to the growing list. I actually liked this one a lot more than expected and knew over half the album. You can see he's building an impressive list of albums from Buffalo Springfield on. Acquired taste sometimes with the voice & pacing but incredibly solid songs. Guy knows how to write a song & put out an album.
Tell Me Why - 4.5/5 After the Goldrush - 4/5 Only Love Can Break Your Heart - 4/5 Southern Man - 5/5 Till the Morning Comes - 3.5/5 Oh, Lonesome Me - 4/5 Don't Let It Bring You Down - 4/5 Birds - 4/5 When You Dance I Can Really Love - 4/5 I Believe in You - 4/5 Cripple Creek Ferry - 4/5 Compared to the more bombastic Neil Young albums I've listened to, this one is a lot more restrained and melancholic. There's really only two "rock"-like songs on here, being the great Southern Man (a song so good some Confederate meatriders had to defend themselves) and the good-but-not-as-great When You Dance I Can Really Love. It's probably the most consistent out of his early few albums but outside of Southern Man I really don't think I'll come back to listening the whole thing again. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Southern Man, Tell Me Why
Some really good songs here (TIL that ‘Don’t Let It Bring You Down’ wasn’t by Annie Lennox) but Neil Young’s voice isn’t my favourite, and Harvest is a better album.
I was fully expecting to give this album five stars. In my opinion, this album, Harvest and Harvest Moon are the quintessential Neil Young albums. I’ve decided to stick with four for two reasons. One, the album is very short. Two, after Southern Man, the record kind of fizzles out with a couple of less memorable tracks.
I always struggle with rating Neil Young. His voice is like an ice pick to the eye. But his songwriting is elite. This album is good from start to finish.
Another solid Neil Young album. Probably his most iconic, but not my favorite necessarily.
Really enjoy Neil Young overall - Southern Man a fantastic song. I do miss the rest of the crew on the album, but overall still a really enjoyable listen. 4
Great songs, some I knew. Love neil
Great album!
neil’s voice is so soothing and overall contributes to this gentle nature of the album
I think I’m a Neil Young fan now?
Really solid. Love Neil Young.
It’s Neil Young. We listen, we love.
Welcome back Neil, it’s been such a long time ;-)
Good album - nice and chilled. Favourite track: When You Dance I Can Really Love
Neil Young has a voice that I find hard to get into. But after a while this album won me over.
While it has Uncle Neil's biggest hits, I don't know that this is his best album. And quickly - Lynyrd Skynyrd embarrassed itself with Sweet Home Alabama. It literally proved Neil's point with Southern Man. Whether that is more or less embarrassing than the tours continuing in Lynyrd Skynyrd's name, I'll leave to you, gentle reader. This is a great album, though. In and out in well under an hour, makes his points, the music is diverse and well-executed, and the production quality is on point. Just needs a little "more barn!"
I don’t think there’s a Neil Young record I don’t like. This is certainly no exception. He writes great songs and plays them well. His minimalist approach make it accessible and rootsy. I like that approach. It’s a classic album that is hard to not enjoy.
Really quite beautiful, I enjoyed this album a lot
first full album exposure to neil young and what a delight.
Já começa com a primeira faixa excelente. Já conhecia o disco. Shouthern Man é uma aula de música!! Que instrumental bom.
When I first listened to Neil Young as a kid I did not like his music, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve really grown to enjoy it.
Very different to what I normally listen to, enjoyed it a lot
A really nice album. I'll definitely relisten to this
"now that you've made yourself love me, do you think I can change it in a day?" Holy shit. This was succinct, in a poetic sort of way. I wasn't expecting it to be over so soon. Good to know that the Crosby stills Nash and young energy continues into the solo acts. Will have to dig more into his discography because some of these lines hit hard as fuck.
I used to own this album and still love it. Favorite songs: Tell Me Why, When You Dance You Can Really Love
That french horn on After the Goldrush is awesome. Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Southern man are awesome. I did find Neil's voice a little grating on some of the tracks. The song writing is still excellent, though.
Un album très sympa Ok en veux beaucoup plus des comme ça Neil Young a tout compris à la vie, c'est beau c'est parfois mélancolique mais c'est surtout beau Et puis Neil young est hyper cool Donc 4
Not bad! I kinda like it. his voice is unique.
Gostoso de ouvir. Melhor do que muitos albúns dessa época que já coloquei pra ouvir. Se puder editar o comentário depois, coloca minhas preferidas
A masterpiece in simplicity and songwriting.
Neil Youngs best album. Everything lands just right.
calm and soothing album my favourite were after the gold rush, teel me why, and birds, like a 3.5
8 / 10
Such a classically 70's sound. My mom had this record on vinyl.
Great album, enjoyed it a lot for a country/folk record
This list needs a lot more variety, specifically it needs to trim out some titles by certain artists who have way to many entries. Having said that, if one artist has to be incredibly over represented I am glad it is Neil Young.
Me gustó, soundtrack para un día melancólico
Very easy listening. Neil's falsetto vocals always kinda grate on me but I didn't mind too much. 4 is probably a tad generous but 3 seems a bit harsh since it's an album I would return to.
Best wel tof deze
After The Gold Rush is steengoede folk rock. Ik heb eerder gezegd dat early-70s Neil Young mijn ding is, dat gaat hier ook weer helemaal op. Niet zo meeslepend als On The Beach en Harvest, maar gewoon heel tof.
"After The Gold Rush" manages to be cozy and melancholic at the same time.
I gotta be listening to more neil young
I’ll admit, the first two listen throughs I just wanted to be listening to Harvest, but on my third go round something just CLICKED (it was Southern Man) and it all made sense why this album is on this list. It is however, not Harvest, so I’m giving it a respectable 4 ⭐️
Some quite beautiful songs on here, I guess the rest also sounded good but I’m not sure what it is that makes this so exceptional to be on the list? And I see considered to be right up there as one if the best. I remain ignorant
of course i love it! sits at a very solid 3 for me, but southern man alone adds a whole star. because it's a great song, but also because without it we'd never get sweet home alabama.
Ég var hrifin
Zuhause, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Sehr gutes Album <3
I’ve previously held a negative view towards Neil Young’s music as from what little I’d heard, it just didn’t seem like my thing. This is now my third Neil Young album on this list and I’ll happily admit I was too quick to judge. I found myself enjoying a lot of the songs more than expected. I will say there are elements of his voice that I’m not sure about sometimes, but other times it works for me. “Southern Man” is such a great track. Love the added energy and guitar work – it almost sounds heavy in parts. It’s the type of song I didn’t think I would hear from him but am so glad is on here. As stated I’m surprised by how much I enjoy the style and relaxed nature of lots of the songs. Top picks: Southern Man, Oh, Lonesome Me, When You Dance You Can Really Love, Tell Me Why.
Although I thought they were decent enough, I haven't been a massive fan of the Neil Young albums I've had so far, so it took a bit of an effort to give this a listen. After the Gold Rush was a better album for me. Still not amazing, but worthy of a re-listen.
Really enjoyed this one, think I’ll have to listen to some more of this guy
Good blend of the rockin and the quieter side of Neil, with beautiful early 70s production. I like this one more each time I come back to it
I tend to like covers of Neil Young's catalogue more than the original recordings, but no doubt he is a legendary songwriter.
This was a very good folk album, as long as you don’t find Neil Young’s voice annoying. Southern Man is the standout track, but I liked pretty much the entire album.
Great album by a rocker, song writer.
It was ok. I don’t really care for Neil Young’s voice but he is definitely a good lyricist and influential on so many others. Bonus star for Southern Man.
Some old classics, haven't heard them in a long time. Definitely a different time and style.
Definitely the classic Neil Young album I've listened to least, with no great reason for that. And I know it's a hard pass in the group, and that some might be allergic to his voice, but it's really lovely, with some beautiful songwriting.
It was very good
This has always been one of my favorites. It was great listening to it again. Classic after classic
It's a seminal album and there's a ton of good songs on here but some are thinner than I remember. Still pretty great and definitely good to listen to before one dies.
A classic, obviously, though not at the top of my Neil Young rankings. There's a funny quote Neil Young has about the meaning, or lack thereof, of Tell Me Why, saying of the chorus: "What the fuck am I talking about?" But meaning is kind of beside the point against the way I feel when I hear those opening lines. I think the record slows a bit on the B-side, which feels like a let down against the run of absolute classics that kick off the record. I get an immense pleasure from singing snippets of this to my dog in Neil Young voice, especially Cripple Creek Ferry.
Great!!!
Classic. Bit slow for my tastes overall but he makes pleasant sounds.
Álbum muito rico em arranjos e vocais. Young genial em todas as épocas. QoA Vesper.
nice
i believe i'd like it more if my right headphone didn't break while i was listening to this album
It's Neil Young, basically at the height of his powers. Some really incredible songs on here. While it's not my favorite Neil album, I'll never argue with someone who says it's theirs.
Another collection of really awesome Neil Young tracks. After the Gold Rush deserves all the acclaim it gets but sometimes he hits that tone he sometimes hits where it sounds like he just got kicked in the balls. He hits it a lot on this one. It's not bad, it just makes me laugh. Like Bob Dylan doing his affected Kermit voice on Nashville Skyline. Still really good but Young being a little more muted & pissier on On The Beach is my zone. Don't Let It Bring You Down, definitely a top 10 Neil track. Favorite Tracks: Tell Me Why, After the Gold Rush, Southern Man, Don't Let It Bring You Down, When You Dance I Can Really Love, Cripple Creek Ferry
Always takes me a song or two to adjust to his voice and then I usually enjoy the album. This is a good one, short and sweet with a few top tunes.
Has the sound of a creative working at the top of his game. Also sounds a lot like a holdover from CSN&Y which is why I was groovin' with this record. Not my favorite Neil Young record, but I've listened to this one so few times in all my years listening to his music that it was a nice little discovery.
Loved two of the songs - the more rocky/loud ones, surprising since didnt think id like music this old
achei um álbum bem legal de escutar, a voz do carinha que canta é mt calmianha e gostosinha. as letras são ótimas pra pensar e sofrer um pouco também kkk bem legal pra uma tarde de sábado chuvosa
Obviously have heard of Neil young. Top 100 Apple album so high hopes. Right off the bat you can tell this is gonna be a song writing album. Good acoustics tho. Love the piano on gold rush. This is a really good song. Only love can break your heart is a banger. Really good songwriting. Really good background track and harmonies too. Southern man is a completely different style. This is very much so a rock song where the first few were much more folky. Great guitar. Obviously good writing again. Love the solo with the piano and guitar. Another great piano on til the morning comes. Sweet trumpet too. Wish it was longer. Oh lonesome me is another one that shows great range. Good songwriting, but different from the rest. This one is very western/country. Love the blend of acoustic and electric. Everytime I think the songwriting can’t get better it does. Don’t let it bring you down is so well written. You could put any music behind it and it would be a good song. Same thing with birds. I love that piano tho. I like how it jumps back to electric on when you dance. Not the best on the album but a pretty good song. Really good piano/guitar solo to end it. I believe in you and cripple creek ferry were both good not great. Honestly kind of forgettable, would’ve like a better ending but this was still a really good album. I get the Neil young hype. 3.6/5 stars.
I really like Neil Young's voice! It carries a lot of my enjoyment of this album.
It has been a while since I have dived into some Neil Young and I got to say I have been utterly missing out because After the Gold Rush is truly the start of a marvelous career for Neil Young. I don't know if it is just Neil Young's vocals or the subject matter of this album but damn does he sound so sad all across After the Gold Rush. Neil never has a booming vocal presence anywhere on this album, but he knows how to use his soft voice to shine a light rather than to blind the listener with his talents. It also helps highlight his masterful lyrical ability which really started clicking on both this album and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. For being 35 minutes, this album sure does take its' time and boy do I love that pacing for this project because I just want to stay in its' cozy aura for a few more minutes. It is super calming and to the point where I don't even think any of my words will do this project justice. It is just something I think more people should just jump into themselves because it is a great album. Really excited to see where Neil has to go from here because I am quite impressed once again!
A couple of tracks took this from a solid listen to a beautiful, almost fragile sounding work of art. 4/5
I love his shrill little voice
It’s actually quite good, and I’m not a folk fan. Or maybe it just fit my melancholy.
Tell Me Why Only Love Can Break Your Heart Southern Man Oh, Lonesome Me Neil Young’s music sounds so raw and genuine. His voice sounds great with harmonies. I love the guitar in Southern Man. There’s great variation between songs while still being cohesive. I was less impressed with the last few tracks of this album. 70/100
Неплохо. Надо послушать ещё
Mellow Neil Young (except the angry “Southern Man”… a highlight on the record). This is a good Neil Young album… leans more into folk than rock. But he’s at his whiniest in terms of vocals. I listened to it a few times and after enjoying it on listen 1,nit started to grate on me a little bit guess. His more rock-centric stuff doesn’t tend to do that to me as much. Still a 4 though.
Good
melancholic nostalgia for the hippy dippy of the 60s. a gentler form of propaganda rolls through the album. all in all a peaceful call for better, you can sense some of the reasons why he's called the godfather of grunge, this moment is yet to happen but the vibe is building Mid 4
A few days ago I had CSNY, and yesterday I had another album of Neil Young, so this is getting a little ridiculous. Songs are good though, so even if I am not a big fan of his voice, I can still enjoy the record. No particular favourites, but many evenly good songs.
Very good. Southern Man is exceptionally good. Nice smooth rhythm to the album
Few new songs, it is just good
2/1000 After The Gold Rush - Neil Young (1970) My first Neil Young album! I've always felt a little intimidated when approaching his music as he doesn't seem too easy to fit in a box. My first reaction was that his voice is sort of unusual, but by "Southern Man" I was absolutely gripped through to the end. Like Neil's career, this album just had a bit of an intangible draw to it which is part of what made it so good. ★★★★½
Look, I haven't listened to much Neil Young but I know the jist. Nothing i say will be news to anyone but I must call out the vocals. To my tastes - too thin, too American. But elsewhere, this is all good. It's almost perfect, in fact. With more listens I could maybe overlook some of the annoying vocal moments. But not for a first time listen.
Solidddd! 4/5
A good country/folk album, homemade and real
1 listen. Favorite track: Southern Man
Expectation: -> Neil Young 1970? No way, not my jam. After listening: -> Shocked at how much I enjoy this. Played the album ~10 times. Track ranking: Southern Dance Only love Believe Cripple Tell me Birds Gold Morning Lonesome Bring you down
I've been ingesting lots of media recently from the tail end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 70s, much of it from the UK or the American West. in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Raoul Duke writes about how mid-60s life in San Francisco (a good way up the coast from where Neil Young recorded After the Gold Rush about half a decade afterwards) was full of a "sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil," comparing the optimism of the time to "the crest of a high and beautiful wave" which, "less than five years later, ...broke and rolled back." After the Gold Rush was inspired by the now-lost script of a film by the same title, in which a commune of hippies in Topanga Canyon (where Young was living at the time) gets washed away in a great flood. perhaps it was the same wave Hunter S. Thompson was talking about. sure, the script might be a bit on-the-nose as a metaphor for the social upheaval taking place, but it makes for a pretty fertile starting point for a set of songs! the gorgeous, instantly memorable title track plays into those themes the most obviously. it's relayed through dream visions of humanity's journey from peace and harmony to drug addiction and environmental collapse. like many Young songs, it's dead simple from a musical perspective, a three-chord piano ballad with a horn overdub; but the imagery evoked is some of the richest in all of singer-songwriterdom! the rest of the material follows suit; this is probably the least hard-rockin' album I've listened to from Young so far. "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" is a real punch to the gut in 6/8, for instance. it's mostly very acoustic and tender, with the vocal harmonies being an especially nice touch. there's a somber mood about these songs, which gives me the impression that Young and Crazy Horse were deeply aware of the significance of the moment they were capturing. I'm aware of Young's ability to let it hang loud and loose, but it's nice to hear a different side of him here. that being said, my favorite song on Gold Rush is easily the heaviest, both topically and musically. "Southern Man", a damning indictment of the racism which was (and is) a fact of life in the American South, is also one of the only tracks where the electric guitars come out in full force; it also happens to be one of my top Neil Young songs, a deeply moving and intelligent reflection on the culture which Lynyrd Skynyrd famously tried (and failed, if you ask me) to mount a response to. interesting that they were so offended by this anti-racist anthem... strong 8/10.
„Look at Mother Nature on the run in the nineteen seventies.“ Pinguin Doku vorher, beim Song direkt geheult Die Verwandlung Moment 🥹✌🏻🖤
Bob Dylan on Friday and Neil Young on Monday. 60s-70s rebel folk at its finest. I love Neil Young, despite his voice. An incredible poet, he was massively active in anti establishment circles. This album features Southern Man, which was specifically called out in Sweet Home Alabama, and, honestly, Lynyrd Skynyrd can suck a butt. Great guitar and drums back up poetic lyrics sung in a Kermit the frog voice. Neil knew how to communicate his feelings through song in such an incredible way. He didn’t just write poppy hits or try to hit the top of the charts. He had a message, and he was going to get it out. Lyrically unmatched, his soulful melodies take you to a place in history that is largely ignored but still relevant as ever. Truly, he was a musical genius. I just wish he had a better voice, but 2 outta 3 ain’t bad.
Not as high a peak as some Neil Young, but still speaks to the soul.
A bonafide Canadian classic. The A-side features some of Young’s best, although I do find the B-side a touch inconsistent. I continue to ponder whether it’s hard to make arrangements with myself…
A bit somnambulant for my tastes, and the voice grates on some tracks, but again, the quality of the songwriting is so high that it earns a 4.
It's nice
Oli hyvää Youngia. Paljon hienoja teemoja ja musiikillisia ideoita!
I get it now
Albums good, didn't want to relate to the lyrics though ow.
Pretty damn good album
Would buy
"There was a band playing in my head and I felt like getting high" - literally me. I keep wanting to give this a 3 because I don't care for his voice, but that guitar playing on Southern Man is too enjoyable. I did not expect Neil Young to go so hard. Put this one in the Dylan pile. Good stuff, but it needs a stronger vocalist. He's fine in harmony but kinda' weak solo. Seems like a running theme with singer songwriters. A lot of them are way better at the songwriting part. Hmm, I might like Neil Young. Who'da guessed.
This is fine background music
honestly don't love Neil's voice on this, but the instrumentation is great and the lyrics even better
3.75 - I like this a bit more than the other album I've listen to recently.
Hearing ol’ Neil sing about a few things is something I want around
Solid listen, some great songs, it was over so quickly because I was jamming and havin fun
Of course this album is great. All Neil albums are great and have their own feel. Love the pacing of this one. 3/7
es un álbum tranquilo pero a la vez es muy flashero, cómo puede llegar a cambiar cada canción durante todo el álbum
A nice listen with a couple classic hits. Album as a whole is best for rainy Saturday mornings. That doesn't mean it's bad, it just means not every Saturday morning is a rainy one.
Jeg kan rigtig godt lide det! Kort og stærkt. Kellermensch have allerede preppet mig lidt med "Dont let it bring you down". Endte igen med 3 lyt, og det blev kun bedre!
Was genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed this album. From start to finish I was totally engaged. It was the first album in this list that I thought was too short and one more track may have pushed this to a solid 5. Neil Young had never been a big part of my listening history but will need to look into him more.
Even more classic. I liked this one better than Harvest.
pleasantly surprised by this! not sure how much i'll relisten but objectively a good album
Yeah I dig this
Really love this early Neil young stuff. Deceptively simple songwriting but so moorish. Not as iconic as harvest but I still loved it. Will come back to this.
Not my favorite Neil Young album - I prefer On the Beach and Everybody Knows This is Nowhere - but it still has that Neil Young magic and beauty which sets him apart from the rest.
Standouts After the Gold Rush Only Love Can Break Your Heart Southern Man Don't Let it Bring You Down
Honestly, not that I'm surprised by how good this album is, but I've mostly known Neil Young from his popular songs (And the albums Harvest/Rust Never Sleeps), so it's good to hear more great music from him. Will say, while I think this album is on par with Harvest, I do think it's a more consistently good album. Harvest might have higher highs (Old Man, Heart of Gold) vs After the Gold Rush (I like Tell Me Why and Southern Man is an absolute classic), but I do think Harvest has some lower lows (Not that it's bad, but I've never liked A Man Needs a Maid). In After the Gold Rush, the whole tracklist is solid aside from the aforementioned Tell Me Why and Southern Man which are amazing. So yeah. This list is chock full of CSN&Y stuff, and usually it's a great listen. This one is no exception, and Young was always my favorite. His work in CSN&Y was always the best, and his solo stuff was always my favorite.
Tbh this one gets a 4 Neil young’s really growing on me don’t let it bring you down is a banger
Seeing how this influenced a few bands I have listened to, only listened to Harvest Moon in the past. A little repetitive on the vocals, if consistent in style
Strong songwriting.
Pleasant enough.Young's voice is not so pleasant.
Simple songs, but so good. Stand out: only love can break your heart and don't let it bring you down
A great album. A lovely mixture of his quieter stuff alongside the Crazy Horse rock sound.
I wonder if Neil Young's heart is as big as his songs would lead you to believe.... I think so, because why else would you sing like that?
Unfortunately I had David Crosbys If I Could Only Remember My Name just yesterday, which I personally prefer. After The Gold Rush is still a great album though.
4 stars just for the shot at racist southerners.
Oh man, I think I am getting brainwashed by 70s poproc k. Aber ich finde das fast alles gut, bzw könnte mir vorstellen dass mir eine Coverversion davon gefallen könnte..
Great Oh Lonesmone me is a aweose song
eu admito que julguei esse álbum nos primeiros segundos de musica e ate fiz uma comparaçao com o bob dylan embora eu goste das musicas dele porém quando chegou em only love can break your heart minha opiniao mudou totalmente favoritas: Only Love Can Break Your Heart; Southern Man; Till The Morning Comes; Oh, Lonesome Me; When You Dance You Can Really Love.
Will revisit this one. Definitely the right mood for a cold winters day when you need to get some things done. Would not call this a headphone album, but solid as a single piece of work.
Harvest edges this out for me, but it’s still strong, end to end: searing, cantankerous, but capable of tenderness.
I enjoyed the energy of this album, I would play this on a long road trip in the future. My favourite track is "Don't Let It Bring You Down". Nice and concise and doesn't out stay its welcome unlike some entries on this list. Minimal harmonica unlike "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan", which is a bonus in my books. 4/5 stars, not quite enough to get a perfect score.
i liked Southern Man, tell me why, and onlu love can break your heart
I never have a bad time listening to a Neil Young record. This one is soulful a mellow. Peak style for Niel. I enjoyed it a lot. Fav this time was "When You Dance You Can Really Love."
i really need to listen to the albums given to me in whole, and not just the first one.
good stuff
Love this album
quite a good album
Good, but I like the previous album more (with the band)
Enjoyed this! "Tell Me Why" "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" "Southern Man" and "Don't Let It Bring You Down" were my faves on here.
More of an On The Beach + Harvest fan but this is a great record too!
A few tracks tip dangerously close towards countrified schmaltz, but for the most part this is a compelling mix of soul-searching acoustics and righteously angry rock. Young is an outstanding lyricist and songwriter even if his vocals are an acquired taste. He's my biggest "discovery" of this tour so far.
Neil isn’t the best singer but is a damn good songwriter. I can understand people’s displeasure of him, but I’d argue that they don’t dive deep enough into his work. This is a classic album for a reason. So good.
This was fantastic. I’ve only got 3 Neil albums left after this and I’ll be sad once there aren’t any more to look forward to.
It's a nice easy listening album and it's a short album which I like. The lyrics are simple but impactful. Not life changing but pretty good. Standouts: "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", "Southern Man", "Oh, Lonesome Me", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", "Birds" and "I Believe in You"
Fantastic
Pretty good album, i wouldve never listened to it if not for this website tbh, i did have some albums of neil young but never tried listening to the guy lol. I rate it a 8/10
Southern Man, When You Can Dance I Really Love, I Believe in You, Cripple Creek Ferry
Surprisingly good
I didn't realize Neil Young could be so... Folk-y? Idk I enjoyed this a lot more than I would have expected. I don't always love his voice but the songwriting is pretty choice
cozy afternoon commute vibes.
I knew surprisingly more songs on the album than I realised
actually rly liked it!
Good album, has some of Neil Youngs best songs in it. His voice sometimes grates on me after extended exposure but at 34 mins this is a sweet spot. 4
Really good. I like it a lot 4/5
I am so sorry, but I do not like his voice :( I like the sound on Only Love Can Break Your Heart, my favorite for now. Love the guitar and piano from "Southern Man". Actually, a much pleasanter experience than the first album I tried last Friday (also from the 70s), with better melodies and a more cohesive vibe, 8.5/10.
Having listened to this during a snowfall and drinking coffee it hit hard. Great morning listen.
Like After the Gold Rush Don't like Neil Young's voice, but I like the songs themselves Like the melodiousness; like the piano-based ones better than the guitar Not crazy about harmonica Know Don't Let It Bring You Down from Annie Lennox, Love That song Love Birds
3.5/5
Gode gamle Neil
His weird plaintive warble is spot on in these songs.
learned a lot of new info about racism in the US in the last century, really recommend going through the lyrics on Genius and reading annotations. for that reason and also for its rock sound, which I just usually enjoy, "Southern Man" was the first one I added to my library. liked the environmental theme (relevant today, also the sound of the song makes it sound kind of like an acceptance), the different genres and also lyrically (that I also feel connected to it in a way) "I Believe in You"; "Cripple Creek Ferry" together with "Till the Morning Comes" for its simplicity (kind of reminded me of The Velvet Underground for some reason) giving the opportunity for interpretation and "When You Dance I Can Really Love" also gotta be one of my favs because unlike other songs in the album which are more abstract, this one just seems like an in moment feeling fullness realisation and anchoring of that feeling (the rock sound, also). I'd say my favs both lyrically and musically are "Don't Let It Bring You Down", "Southern Man", "Tell Me Why" and "When You Dance I Can Really Love". idk this all might just be bullshit tho (it's not) P.S. I was going through the lyrics of "Tell Me Why", and there's a line that goes "When you're old enough to repay But young enough to sell?" so i was wondering what that meant and Young himself legit just says "It sounds like gibberish to me, I stopped singing that song because when I get to that line, I go, ‘ what the fuck am I talking about?’ You know I don’t edit my songs." and it's so funny to me cause i was wondering the same
It’s a miracle that this album is so good and so listenable, so iconic, given how supremely annoying Neil Young’s voice can be.
There's some really great songs on here that feel like they have the potential to be life changing
prawdopodobnie najczesciej pojawiajacy sie na liscie artysta,a jednoczesnie nazwisko ktore nadal dobrze sie slucha, czyli kolejna odslona neila younga, tym razem trzeci w kolejnosci krazek z solowego dorobku artysty after the gold rush z 1970, nie znalem go wczesniej, bo przesluchalem debiut i od razu skonczylem do najbardziej popularnego nagrania czyli harvesta, a okazuje sie, ze juz na gold rushu potrafil on wyczarowac swoje unikalne brzmienie country rocka z elementami elektrykow gitarowych, sklad w duzej mierze sklada sie z czlonkow crazy horse, nawet pan stills sie pojawia wokalnie, podobnie jak z panem cohenem sluchanie tak gleboko dotykajacej muzyki jest trudno bolesne, gdy nie stoi sie na pewnym gruncie uczuciowym, tylko stapa po grzezawisku dziwnosci zwanym miloscia, a chyba to wlasnie after the gold rush bedzie najbardziej milosno zorientowanym albumem jaki sluchalem od pana younga, pomimo tego ze inspiracja do niego byl sceneariusz hiposowskiego ekologicznego postapo, a moze jedynie tak mi sie wydaje przez aktualne rozbicie uczuciowe, dlatego gdy wroce do normalnosci bede mogl przesluchac go sobie kolkejny raz i porownac czy nadal brzmial on tak romantycznie jak teraz, hajlajtowymi momentami byly tytulowy after the gold rush, i belive in you, wonderin i jedyny cover na plycie czyli oh lonesome me z najlymi fragemntami harmonijkowymi calej plyty, ciekawe jak sie zestarzeje ten odsluch
Feels like being wrapped in a blanket after a heartbreak
Well here's a thing. I really liked this. I don't know why. Its still the same voice, struggling at the top of the range, and overusing vibrato in places (I guess like Maria Carey it does mean you hit the right note twice every cycle). He's a good songwriter. I do think that Birds is a natural closing track though.
Southern man is a banger. The instrumentals really soothe me, but the voice doesn't as much.
I'm really enjoying this....... This is good music to just have playing....that sounds so dumb.....I need to stop doing these in the morning when my brain doesn't work properly yet......Probably the most I've fixated on lyrics recently, though most slid down my smooth brain....reads like poetry Tell Me Why After The Gold Rush Only Love Can Break Your Heart Oh, Lonesome Me Birds I Believe In You ....do I really like Neil Young ????
solid, i enjoyed this i like how weird and kinda bad neil young’s voice is it works in the space
Overall Rating - 4.44/5 (8.88/10). Not quite an "All Killer, No Filler" to get to 5 stars, but really excellent. The 90's bands need to listen to this to learn how to do melancholy without being angsty. Couple of standout songs to comment on. Southern Man: Why do we need to continue having this fight? It's still necessary today, and it shouldn't need to be. Only Love Can Break Your Heart: Brought me to tears, because I feel its truth in my soul. After the Gold Rush: So close to perfect that I can't help but get tears.
Liked. Always been put off Neil Young by his voice but some great songs on this
Amazing album to start my 1001 journey. Need more time to dig in Neil's music and lyrics.
1. Pretty good classic roadtripy sounding opener 2. Very slow and emotionally provocating song 3. (+) Pretty well written Heartbreak/Longing song 4. (+) pretty Rock based music somewhat close to Qotsa 5.
I always appreciate a NY project. Great, easily listen.
Nice
Oh, Lonsome Me is such a sad song, I love it. This is Neil Young at his best. Such a great songwriter.
Didnt know i liked Country? Or maybe I just havent to listened enough to this kind of country? Pleasently surprised!
What I most admire about Neil Young is his ability to punctuate his incredible lyrics and really make them stick out. They don't just lie there- his attention to writing excellent melodies allows that to occur. You can tell he has an ear for a tune- the title track's somber horn/piano duet, the grunge guitar on "Southern Man." Lovely album. May be his best
Country folk rock with a few songs I remember as my favorites of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. 1.5 songs made my playlist.
Neil Young is always a good time
Great
This list has taught me a lot, but what it's most recently taught me is that I love this kind of sound, artists like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, etc. This is no different, just a little more rock-focused than those two. Neil Young has a very interesting voice to me, almost like The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne with the register he sits in when he sings. I feel like some songs really stick out to me on this album as better than everything else, especially Southern Man and Only Love Can Break Your Heart, but everything in this album is pretty good at a minimum. The best part is Neil Young writing a protest song that pissed off Lynyrd Skynyrd.
An all time classic
The first three songs didn't do much for me, but then it picks up. These are all great: Southern Man Till the Morning Comes Don't Let It Bring You Down When You Dance... Cripple Creek Ferry
Enjoyable.
The title track is a masterpiece, as is Southern Man.
This is my favorite version of Neil Young.
I've noticed that Neil sounds like me at karaoke night, when I'm not too confident to belt out a storng falsetto. Aside from that, Southern Man's anger comes through its biting lyrics and heavy rock sound. (3.5-4)
A solid folky album. I'd listen again.
at first i were not really into this album but after third song that changed. overall it was pretty enjoyable listen
Not my type
Neil Young had to grow on me. I hated his voice so much for so long. Only deep into adulthood do I realize the power in that vulnerable falsetto. If you don't feel his songs in your bones, you might not be paying attention.
I used to feel about Neil Young the way a lot of people feel about Bob Dylan - like his songs, hate his voice. He is growing on me now, although I still prefer Dolly Parton’s version of the title track (and not just because I’d put better odds on her surviving an apocalypse).
Şarkıları beğendim yine dinlerim
Très bon
This record is a mixed bag but it has some of gis best tracks. “Southern Man” is an absolute banger. “Don’t Let It Bring You Down” is great and “When You Dance You Really Love” is fun too.
yup
wowwwww. genuinely amazing, southern man was my favourite track, not a genre i would usually go for but i suppose thats the point of this.
3.7
Really enjoyed some of the songs and the way he sang them. Especially liked: After the goldrush Only love can break your heart
Surprisingly gentle album from someone whose more rocking music I've always appreciated. Some very nice harmonies that echo the kind of stuff he was making with CSN&Y. Liked it more than I expected, but not quite 5 stars.
honestly liked pretty much every song except for maybe „tell me why” and „after the gold rush”. also, the guitar in southern man was phenomenal
Good Album, lots of hits and familiar songs, classic Neil Young.
really loved the first song the rest were all good but not something i see myself coming back to very often except in the summer. Tell me why was my favorite and my least favorite was sadly the title track being after the gold rush.
wow omg wow cool liked it but not thaaaaaaat much
Southern man hits hard! I prefer his work on Harvest, but he really is a special human with a lot to say. There are few artists that have the longevity and consistency in their body of work like NY. Only Love Can Break Your Heart is a beautiful song.
Neil Young is a good songwriter and sometimes sings very good and powerful stuff. I don’t think he has the pipes to carry some of these tunes, though. The stuff he harmonizes on is far superior to his solo voice alone. Still solid.
top song- tell me why.
Good in a lot of places I honestly am really surprised I liked it so much. Would be five stars if there weren’t so many eh songs.
Tell me why - phenomenal harmonies, primitive but clean production, great lyricism After the gold rush - great sounding upright, less keen on songwriting Only love can break your heart - pre-chorus has lovely chords, lovely harmonies in chorus, lures you into a simple tune and then puts twists on the very conventional harmony Southern Man - classic Neil Young driven guitar tone, yearning Till the morning comes - quaint, less keen on stabby chords and horns Oh, lonesome man - narrower mix for a more reflective and nostalgic song Don't let it bring you down - feels triumphant, love the powerful stabs, nice harmonics in the ending Birds - nice reverb and use of 7th chords When you dance I can really love - cool Bonham-esque drum sound I believe in you - like how the positioning of vocals in the mix in the first verse, like heavier compression on the acoustic cripple creek ferry - feels like end of a kids tv show, nice long fade out
This album (and Live at Massey Hall) always remind me that Neil is just a simple boy from North Ontario
Beautiful lyricism accompanied by affecting and tender vocals. Needs a closer listen in the future from me.
I started this damn thing hoping to find new favourite artists and albums, and behold my second pick has delivered just that. Not a dud track. The downers are gloriously miserable (Oh Lonesome Me, Birds), and therefore are my favourites
Very nice indeed!
Una banda conocida, con buenas canciones, pero no es para mi
V good
Excellent
I was obsessed with this when I first moved to Manchester so it's up there for me even if he does look like a sleep paralysis demon
Some more peak Neil young
84/100. Spectacular country rock record. It carries a charming simplicity that runs consistently throughout the album, making it feel both intimate and timeless. While it may seem minimal on the surface, it’s a surprisingly layered and emotionally rich listen.
151225 11:28 4 / highlights: only love can break your heart, southern man, when you dance i can really love, don't let it bring you down
Fantastic album, but like most of Neil's work, it doesn't quite get to the level of a 5 for me. It's like, there's a persistent feeling that it's not quite as good as it could be ... or as I want it to be. 4, but a very high 4. Side note: How have I not noticed before how much Wayne Coyne sounds like Neil Young?
I am almost allergic to Neil's voice, but I often really like his guitar sounds. And these are excellent songs.
4/5 - This might be one of those that could be a 5 if I was more familiar with it the whole thing, but given limited time to stew with it, I'll hold back and give it a 4. Young's songwriting generally ranges from really good to amazing, and this is no exception. The whole record sounds beautiful to me, so I'm bookmarking it for more listening.
At first I thought, this can’t be the real voice. Like someone trying too hard to be nonchalant like Bob Dylan but it didn’t work. But then the rest of the album was pretty solid.
Just a really good album
Tell me why: 3/5 After the gold rush: 1/5 Only love can break your heart: 4/5 Southern Man: 5/5 Till the morning comes: 3/5 Oh, Lonesome Me: 5/5 Don't let it bring you down: 4/5 Birds: 3/5 When you dance I can really love: 3/5 I believe in you: 3/5 Cripple Creek Ferry: 4/5 Wonderin: 4/5 Overall a great album, but most songs would be better with someone else singing, particularly when he sings falsetto.
Southern Man is such a great song. I love the distortion of the guitar in it. I also really enjoyed When You Dance You Can Really Love.
Never listened to Neil Young before. Or, if I have, I was never aware it was Neil Young. Can't say that I really recognize any of these songs... but perhaps some were vaguely familiar? Anyways, pleasantly surprised. Don't know what I was expecting, but I quite enjoyed this. Young's voice is a bit reedy in some tracks, but I've come around to it. Overall, though, very listenable album.
Vibey and good to have on for a relaxing drive or working. I didn’t necessarily save any to listen to again but as an album I thought it was cohesive and a great vibe
I dont know what I expected, but this wasn't it. Something about his voice caught me off guard. A lot of songs reminded me of "Old man" which isn't on the album. It's a great album but feels like he rehashes a lot of ideas.
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I had not listened to any of Neil Young's solo work, but I knew of his work from Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young- and I consider myself a fan of their music. "Southern Man" was THE song of the album for me; in my opinion, it was the real standout. It has been hours since my first listen, and I still can not get the guitar solos out of my head. Truly beautiful work, a 5/5 song for me. More songs I like are the opener "Tell Me Why" and also "Only Love Can Break Your Heart". I feel as if the first half of the album was stronger than the second half. To me, it seemed like it kinda fizzled out towards the end...that is not to say the songs were bad. They, in my opinion, just did not match the quality of the earlier songs. I, however, did enjoy the fun and whimsy the closing song "Cripple Creek Ferry" brought to the album. Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush" was an immensely enjoyable listen, and I will be checking out more of his work in the future. 4/5
