Reviews (page 12 of 13)
I expected more from her fame tbh
Helt bra, men onödigt långt.
Look I get her talent, but it's not really for me.
Instrumentally not very exciting or lush as her second album. Lyrically its mostly about her boyfriends and how they treat her and cheat her and all that. Huge inspirations from the R&B music of the 50s and 60s. Too long. Liked: Intro/Stronger than me, Fuck me Pumps (favourite), Moody's Mood for love, Help Yourself.
I’ll be Frank, as someone who is a huge fan of Back To Black I went into this expecting something similar and I was a little disappointed. Her voice is as good as ever, but I guess this downtempo jazz style just isn’t for me. Favorite songs were Intro/Stronger Than Me, Fuck Me Pumps, and In My Bed.
i really did not like it at all NNN
I would have a drink with her, but I am picking the music, and it is not this
It seems to me like Amy Winehouse gets the Adele treatment where anything she ever released is considered good, even when it’s remarkably average. Back To Black is a fantastic album, but Frank left a lot to be desired. Maybe I’d like this more if I was going through a breakup or in my 20s, but I couldn’t get into this at all. She’s obviously a talented singer, and there are some decent songs here, but overall it’s just not great and doesn’t deserve to be on this list.
She did have a voice, but even if it was pretty powerful, I never really liked her inflexions, the timbre, something is off for me. Musically, I like jazz but I always prefer when it's instrumental. And when the beats start, to give the background jazz music a modern twist, I find it pretty annoying. I never really got all the fuss around Winehouse, and listening to this album did not convinced me that I am missing something.
Meh not my favorite
I just don't get the hype around her. She's good but not great, and this record was unremarkable.
Not keen on the drum machine. I prefer the warmer production of Back To Black. A good warm-up for that, I guess, but the songs or the sound didn't grab me in the way that album did.
I'm not really sure what to say about Frank. I know I'm suppose to love it. But it almost passed me by in the way that listening to Serenade Radio does. The voice is of course superb. But the songs aren't quite there. Fuck Me Pumps made me smile. I'd love to hear that on Serenade Radio at 7am.
Amy Winehouse was a fine singer, and sure could reach listeners of different generations and tastes. This isn't her greatest work, and it sure isn't essential listening. Her voice is a lot better on Back To Black.
Seemed like one long song. I like her (sadder) songs about addiction more than these songs about dangerous men.
2.5 Yeah, there’s a reason we mainly remember her for Back to Black. Her voice is technically good here, but she’s still aping other people’s styles, she hasn’t come into her own. The album is too long, and the songs are bad and/or extremely forgettable. That first song is one of the worst I’ve heard doing this project thus far!
really good, deep voice, which I really value, but the beat and sound overall are pretty simple and the whole album is quite boring to listen
Really not that good. I understand back to Black being on this list, but this album is really a step down
Saknar hits. Jävligt märkligt att det alltid är gruppers och artisters första album som prompt ska vara med på listan.
Withholding my Amy winehouse takes until after back to black, but this album wasn't for me.
If you're going to go grave-robbing, at least make it exciting. The music here is unimaginative, and only the attempt at approximating Billie Holiday moves this a notch or two up the Pat Boone larceny scale. People often comment on Winehouse's voice, which I'm not even convinced about. It sounds sickly, a curdling of all the great jazz voices she both cites and imitates.
Great singer. Terrible lyricist. I remember Back To Black being better than this one. The lyrical content hasn't aged well and the album drags at points.
should have been called 'bill' or 'kev' instead
I understand she has a great voice… I don’t understand how she became the icon that she is. Meh.
Not my style but even considering that I find her voice quite annoying - shrill. I wonder how much money she saved by using a drum machine instead of a musician.
Great voice but not my thing.
One of the best crooners/skatters around. I just don’t particularly like crooning or skatting. RIP to a legend.
Expected to like this much more than I did since I liked Back to Black. A little too scoobadoobedoo jazz for me unfortunately. Re that first song: Amy Winehouse’s homophobia walked so Katy Perry could run 💅 (if Jeremy made the same joke that’s because we talked about it!!!)
Bit weird, not sure i'd come back to it. Her voice sounds great but it didn't really grab me. Also not a fan of scat singing but that's not Amy's fault
She has a good voice, but I found this tedious to listen to. The songs did not grab me, I was bored. Give me Norah Jones every time over this.
She had a good voice and the concept is good, I just found the album a bit one note.
unexpected to have multiple Amy Winehouse albums here, and not sure that it’s really necessary. This album is a bit jazzier but not as powerful or memorable as Back to Black (which I gave a 3). the majority of songs are about relationships and/or sex. It just doesn’t grab me and more washes over me. You can see the talent is there and nothing is bad, but a lot of the songs are just whatever.
I feel like this is only on the list because she only made 2 albums. It's pretty forgettable with some outdated (even at release) notions of masculinity.
86/1001 2/5
Never got the appeal.
Misandry right out of the gate. This isn't looking good. Nope. This is toxic AF. Winehouse is a mess and a hotbed of drama that I have always gone out of my way to avoid. She's a great singer, but it's unfortunate that the balance of her voice on this recording is constantly in clip. I usually don't listen to the content of the lyrics, but that's all this album has to offer me, being anodyne backing tracks to spotlight Winehouse's voice. Since I can avoid the content of the lyrics, I'm going to avoid the album.
This must have been added before Back to Black came out, right? I can’t see any reason why this would need to stay on the list after BtB. Anyway, I’ve never really been an Amy Winehouse fan. I do like the singles off BtB but the rest of her repertoire, including this entire album, is a chore for me to listen to. Her voice and her songwriting are not nearly as developed on this album.
I can see why it was popular but not for me
It's got some good elements, not my genre tho. Will I listen to again: 10%
Back To Black is a far superior album
Meh
Raw voice… but album not my cup of tea
Interesting album to start with. Drums are nice. the chords 😍. decent grooves throughout. She loves talking about cigarettes. Some kinda separate storyline happening with the intros/outros. She’s talking directly to herself a lot. Feels like a lot of foreshadowing, knowing what we know. In my bed is a vibe musically. A stand out. I don’t like her voice at all. I tried. there’s not enough variety. Socially it doesn’t change enough. Even if the music tries to her voice brings it all back. If you heard anyone singing or humming her songs to themselves it would be cringe as hell. Surprisingly the lyrical content picks up halfway. Ok nevermind. I can’t take “amy amy amy” seriously. Outro idea is cool. But I wish it would have started with the idea a little more clearly.
Nope, don't particularly care for this one. And I know her voice is pretty much universally considered to be a good voice, but I didn't find myself particularly caring for it either.
Her voice is really good, but none of these songs grabbed me in any real way.
Iconic voice. Simply one of a kind. So tragic we don't get to hear any new songs from hear. I don't typically listen to this kind of music. I don't hate it but it's not my first choice but I can not hate Amy and her one of a kind voice.
She has a nice voice, but I don’t really care for any of the songs, the writing doesn’t speak to me. I’d totally listen to her doing jazz vocal classics, but I wouldn’t run this album back.
This was okay. Not my fave Amy and some of these gave weird vibes. The October one was good but the slow ones - meh.
meh
This is a tough listen with hindsight. Underproduced too. Just feels too light since we know what can be with Black
It took 43 people to make this? Unpopular opinion but I think Amy Winehouse’s voice is weak and annoying. The songwriting left me cringing. Much like every other post 2000 female r& b artist. Very commercial and definitely not for me. Owes too much to its influences.
a bunch of skips for me, and i sit through a lot...
Amy's vocal talent is undeniable, even though she was 19 or 20 when she recorded this. The problem is that outside of a couple of songs, the production is corny as hell, and has aged terribly. You can see why she came to dislike the album in few years between its release and her death.
why the hell did Salaam Remi want her to sound like Alicia Keys so badly
it has all the ingredients but the cake comes out with a weird aftertaste.
Having a good voice doesn't make a great album if all of the songs suck.
Nothing to see here, your time is better spent elsewhere, move on. Unmemorable, except maybe Fuck Me Pumps. There are hundreds of albums like this out there that no one talks about, why this one made the list beats me. Guess my mama was wrong after all, getting wasted in public does pay off!
Good voice. Lyrics make no sence. Not that good 2/5
her voice is impressive, not my style tho
Very blues
Another one where I appreciate the artist being on the list but not this album. To my ears, neither the material nor the production are worthy of Amy.
I think I was kind to Back to Black a few years ago, but this is just reheated easy listening with a few swears and edgy bits. Pretty bland.
The raw materials are here: the voice (most of the time), the lyrical subject matter, etc, but it hasn’t come together into a cohesive whole just yet. This one is a bit all over the place musically, though always “jazzy.”
Her voice is great, but the songs aren’t. And the production seemed to want a lofi sound, but instead it sounds cheap.
Sounds just fine, but not my cup o' chai.
It was ok. I don’t feel it was bad, I enjoyed some of it.
What a difference a good (or in this case bad) producer makes.
This wasn't really something I cared for. That said, I did like "What Is It About Men"
Not really my thing but she does it well and has a hell of a voice. There were some memorable numbers but I just don’t see myself going back to it. Glad to have heard it though.
“Fuck Me Pumps” is dope and Amy’s voice oozes soul but this album is just OK. Thank God we got “Back in Black.” Such a tragedy that we lost such a talent. Shame on all of us.
Iha jeez
Not my cup of tea. Wanted to give it a 3 but nothing stood out enough
I liked the tone overall but found some lyrics problematic. I was excited to listen to it as I like what I know of Amy Winehouse's music, but found this album underwhelming. "Amy Amy Amy" as my favorite. 2/5
Meh
Meh
Beautiful voice but an album is a little slow. Not a huge fan of her work but like her life story. Really like Veronica that is not on this album. Most songs sounded the same to me which may be expected with such a distinctive sound. Liked Know You Know and understand appeal to to F**K Me Pumps. 2
Incredible vocals, as expected. Really nice production too but the whole album bored me. The same vocal style with a catchy drum beat and vamped jazz chords for an hour does tend to do that though. It isn't bad by any means and it's quite pleasant to listen to just not my preference.
Was disappointed to start here. Going into it I'm not a fan of Amy but really only knew Rehab. The song was annoying and overplayed for me at the time, which turned me off. Then the irony with her death just really made it clear my life would be fine if I never heard her again. But I wanted to try this 1001 albums journey. The intro scatting had me just about pull the plug after 6 seconds, but I stuck with it and it wasn't too bad after that. The style was interesting and jazzy, but overall not really anything that will find its way into my playlist. Best song - You sent me flying 1.5 / 5
Overly florid voice stylings. It's not for me.
I enjoy the instrumentals and style. Even though I respect her, Amy's vocals are enjoyable at first but get irritating after a couple of songs.
Great voice, not the content matter that I want to listen to as an 18 yr old guy
Probably won't listen again. Didn't do much for me
Meh
En mä nyt ihan hiffaa miks tää on listalla. Jos kysees olis back to black niin varmaan joo. Tää jäi vähän kädenlämpöseksi. 2/5
Mietin tätä kuunnellessa, miksi toksiset lainit häiritsee enemmän laulettuna kuin räpättynä. Kai sanoille tulee laulaen suurempi painoarvo. No eipä tämä ole musiikillisestikaan ihan mun juttu.
Alternative title: I Heart Misogyny and Toxic Masculinity
I’m not super impressed by themes here. Her voice is distinct, for sure. Favorite is probably (There Is) No Greater Love.
Dropped halfway. Fine voice, but not my thing.
She has a unique voice, but this album is dull as dishwater. An hour of mid-90s “smooth jazz” level beige music, her lyrics are largely unintelligible on a first listen because her voice just drones on and on and on without a single hook worth a damn on the whole album, and overall it sounds like something you would hear playing in a Starbucks in the oughts and never wonder to yourself “how can I hear much more of this?”
bad length, instruments are just there to showcase her weird voice, every song is exactly the same. that being said, it is music which warrants a 2 for this list.
Fin stemme, men rammer ikke min stil overhovedet.. det er ikke rigtigt nogle bangers?
😬
No Greater Love is beautiful. And her voice is incredible throughout Just not really into it
I own Back to Black on vinyl and used to play it a lot as background music. I can't say I have ever put Amy Winehouse on to listen with headphones before, or payed much attention to her lyrics. I also really didn't know this album at all before this listening. I think Amy was amazing, but I did not enjoy the experience of listening to this album. Her talent and potential is clear, but overall compared to Back to Black, Frank is nothing to write home about. It's got breakthrough album written all over it - but that doesn't implicitly qualify it as a classic in my opinion. The songwriting does seem to mature as the album goes on. The lyrics in general are super of their time and made me feel very uncomfortable to listen to at points. While it's definitely cool the way that Amy took this genre of music right into the mainstream, pairing it with the sort of themes that rappers and popstars sing about, the blatant homo and transphobia, misogyny and the like is galling. Overall: not for me, I won't be returning to this album.
Amy winehouse. A fitting name for someone who wines on most songs. It would be a nightmare dating her as you get trashed in all her lyrics. Nice voice, great beats, but her personality makes me flaccid. Obviously Frank Sinatra inspired. She over sings a little bit in the same way she over drinks. In “Fuck me Pumps” at least she takes a break shitting on men to take a stab at Miami club bimbos. So far that’s the best one. “I heard love is blind” okay she’s insane. “Amy Amy Amy” was pretty good. You can tell she’s drunk at a bar for that one. Damn she shits on her brother. At least she finished with “Mr Magic” a non-complaining song. Overall decent music but I don’t want any of that poisonous personality so I won’t listen to this album again. I would like to hear a better album from her. She’s got (had) potential. 4/10
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. "Fuck me pumps" was my favorite. Another need for a 2.5 start rating.
to be fair, I've never really liked her stuff. Too whiny sounding, to voice focused. Not my cup of tea. Good production though.
I was actually expecting to enjoy this more. Maybe Black on Black will be that. I guess I was expecting more... Jazz? Seemed to be a lot more pop/soul than I really expected. Oh well. Also surprised this came out in 2003? I would have guessed later 00's. She has a line about texting and I thought damn did people even do that in 2003? Anyway - I expect her other album to be on this list so I'll reserve total judgement of her music for then.
I dont understand why so much weird junk is on this list.
I didn't like the album cover, beside that i never listen to it, obviously i listen to her classic on back to black but that all, i also know her tragic story and her legendary voice. The music style is funk, jazz, R'nB and Soul, all kind of music that i don'tg listen very much so i can harldy judge the quality of the alubm. Also i listen to the album in spotify, but i don't find the full album, just remix and all so i'm not sure i really listen to the real thing. Anyway ig for a Soul or Rn'b fan this is some real good music, i'm personaly not attracted by that.
Not for me, I'm afraid. Yeah, she has buckets of talent, but I just don't like the music. A 2.
I disagree she was a good singer. She just want that special.
Not for me.
I can't say I've ever knowingly listened to Amy Winehouse. Kinda like it.
more like Amy Middowntempo !
4/10 good production voice is hit or miss the lyrics💀
Let's just say she grew a lot by Back to Black.
Can't do Amy Winehouse. Crap.
I found all parts of this album less interesting then Back to Black. Still has a great voice but I didn't care about any of these songs.
she’s got a cool voice but the record seems kind of fake, it’s a shame what happened to her, i hope she’s at peace
I can certainly appreciate her talent. But this kind of music does nothing for me.
Amy had an amazing voice and songwriting talent, and I liked her second album, but this one was a genre issue for me - scat-style singing just gets on my nerves.
Top artiest. Album echt geen donder aan sorry
wel goed, wel wat moeite om er helemaal door te komen
Never listened to this before, or her other album, although obviously I know the name and the story. So, interesting... I'm conflicted. I like the damned style of much of it - the beat that hits you on Stronger Than Me, for example, is really powerful. And there's lots going on here. I particularly enjoyed the bossa nova notes and there's lots to like. And she can sing - No Greater Love is a triumph and I really liked that. But I think I just don't like her voice enough to listen to this as an album again. She can hold a note; she can sing; she can put together a tune - although the lyrics largely passed me by. But I just can't get behind the voice. It makes it difficult to listen to a whole damned album. Two, maybe three tunes in a row is enough. I know I'm probably wrong, but I just don't like it enough. Sorry.
Jaja
I'm not sure if Amy Winehouse's second album is included on this list, but I'm assuming it is because it was a bigger record. I don't know that both of her records deserve to be on this list - and this one didn't seem as impressive as Back to Black.
I was never a fan of Amy simply because I’m not a fan of this type of music
Not sure why this record is on the list. Amy Winehouse herself kind of disowned the record. Yes she has a voice, and yes she would record a classic in Back to Black but this is a patchy affair at best.
Didn’t feel it. Too jazzy
I thought, this being Amy Winehouse, that I’d recognise some tracks here. Surprisingly, I don’t recognise a single track name. I was never the biggest Amy Winehouse fan, but during her time I was pretty solely listening to punk so it wasn’t really my scene. I’m happy to say my horizons have broadened since then, so let’s listen to this for the first time today! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Amy Amy Amy There is no denying the talented vocals and the interesting jazz-pop orchestration of the music. It’s unusual for the genre to make waves in these modern days, but Amy seemed to change all of that. However, whereas Back To Black has many recognisable songs, her debut album doesn’t really have that. The lyrics here are pretty horrible at times - the opening track has her calling a guy “gay” and a “ladyboy” because he gets emotional and needs some comfort. It’s hard to see how people heard this and thought, “She’s gonna be big.” Musically, this is decent. Lyrically, it is trash and really quite horrible. These themes, along with F*** Me Pumps, really make it seem like she saw herself as “not like the other girls” and it all comes across as horribly cringy. Thankfully, Back To Black was a lot better than this.
What a great singer, what dumb lyrics.
I wanted to write something a little mean, but then I remembered that Back to Black is actually a lot more interesting
Great voice, but weirdly boring album. Definitely missing the Mark Ronson production
good voice, too jazzy and smokey backing, did not like it
Not for me
The Amy Winehouse album nobody listens to. It has some half times but is mostly unremarkable
not really
Really boring production. It’s a shame I didn’t like this more because Winehouse has a great voice and is a decent lyricist.

Third background cd for a polite dinner party.
The production and composition was very appealing. Sounded like old a jazz album with the warm fuzz of vinyl crackling in the background. The lyrical themes, however, were not appealing and made me wonder why Amy was so popular aside from her stark honesty.
Winst.
There's a big difference between somebody who knows what notes to sing, and can hit the correct notes, and somebody who can SING the music. There's no passion in her voice, there's no rich quality to her singing, she's just singing what is put in front of her. I can't believe that everybody hypes her the way they do. She gets an extra star because her voice isn't terrible and because the music is not bad.
I can hear she has an amazing voice. Not for me.
I missed the Amy Winehouse bus when it was originally leaving the station. I'm okay to have let it pass me by despite her amazing voice. While I recognize that talent, I'm not particularly into the lyrical content or the music and arrangements.
I get why others would like it, I myself do not. She was talented enough but the songs just don't do anything for me. The lyrics are pretty dreadful in my opinion.
I don’t like the production, which is dull to near soporific, but her voice and lyrics are occasionally fantastic, and distinctive: unmistakeable hers. But the music made me drift off.
Winehouse’s Black album is so good that I bought it on vinyl. But this Frank album feels like she is either still honing her craft. Or whacked on on smack and not noticing what a hot mess of tracks she was laying down.
Nope. Not for me. I'll leave it to others to provide the plaudits. I guess this one is a matter of taste so not fair to review. I can sort of appreciate some of the later stuff but not this.
mjae
Another artist I was looking forward to experiencing for the first time, although I have heard of her. First few songs caught my attention. Very unique voice. Generally not a fan of the jazz, but some of the songs seemed to touched the R&B sound I usually enjoy. I'm torn on this album. Really enjoyed the introduction, did not dislike the sound, but found nothing that made me want to go back and download. All I can say is was OK. Didn't want to turn off, but nothing I would seek out. I did listen a couple times too. For that, right down the middle. 2.5 Nothing I would download so the score on the board will be 2 Will score a 2. If I found a
Amy had talent, no doubt, but her style isn’t really my cup of tea.
Some of the songs, like "Stronger" and "Fuck me pumps" don't really hold up lyrically today. It's a shame, because Amy is a great performer, but I can't really see myself listening to this very much.
Some great sounds but had some distracting moments that took me out of it.
She has an unique voice, I'll give her that and comparisons to Billie Holiday are inevitable and her talent is undeniable. This is the first time I've ever actually listened to a full album by her, Lord knows I tried, but nothing on this album really grabbed my attention. As a debut album from a 19 year old this is commendable , but it is a bit one dimensional and still needs some fleshing out IMO. Her next album was better.
It definitely showcases her vocal talents, but the songs, and the album as a whole, aren’t terribly strong.
blergh
Pains me to rate Amy so low but this is not good. First couple songs were not bad but then this thing just drags. Production is repetitive and bland, songwriting is nothing to write home about. The only redeeming quality here is Amy’s voice, which is one of the best of the 21st century. Back to Black is WAY better.
To be frank, wank.
Sucks when you're really looking forward to an album and it falls flat. But it really sucks when you're looking forward to an album and you desperately need it to stop after the third song. The indiscriminate use of ups-and-downs, ins-and-outs of her voice (contralto?) drove me bonkers. I assume this was involuntary or she hadn't ever heard a recording of her work. Love AW's voice and singing in VERY SMALL DOSES. My max is really about 3 consecutive songs. I muscled through, but was ready to quit after track 3.
I started off really not into this. I still didn't save much, but the album definitely rebounded for me into and through the back half. Still not really my thing, but I came around to it a bit more than I thought I would have after the first few songs. Standouts: Cherry, In My Bed
She was obviously very talented, and it really shines through the mediocre song writing. Not really for me but I understand why someone would like this album.
This reminded me of Dame Cleo Lane, who was famous for her boop-de-boop-boops, vocal range and scatting. All very well and clever but when you have to hear an hour of it is dull, monotonous and seems interminable. There were moments of wit and levity. An interesting first album, but I can’t say I enjoyed it.
I don't subscribe to the cult of Amy Winehouse. I think it has something to do with not being a total idiot. 2/5.
Idk feela int
I don't know how to best articulate what it is about Amy Winehouse that I do not connect with. No doubt, she's got a range and her own style, she's got a unique voice and ... I'm trying to come up with more. Point is, I just don't enjoy listening to her sing. I'm sure this isn't exactly fair, but it just never sounds genuine to me. It's like she's playing at being a sultry jazz-inflected siren, but I'm not buying it. I tried to listen objectively, and this is clearly early work of hers, so you can hear her thinking through the parts on many of these songs—she's got the talent, she's still working on the craft. With another artist, I might have enjoyed the juxtaposition of the studio and live cuts of the same material, but on this I was annoyed that we were hearing the same tracks again. So, yeah, I tried, but I'm just not an Amy Winehouse fan.
Wasn't particularly fussed. Despite being a debut and therefore obviously not the case it was a bit like an Amy Winehouse parody...
her voice is great, but the music is a bit boring. would be nice as a background live performance at a bar or dark restaurant. 2/5
Not for me
Tried a few of the songs—especially the singles—none of the stood out. Not a huge R&B fan.
The first question that came to my mind was "would this album be here if it wasn't for Winehouse way too premature a departure?" Curious thoughts aside, there is no denying the qualities of Winehouse's voice. What I will deny, though, is her music: I just don't get along with what passes for pop these past couple of decades (nor am I in the contemporary R&B market).
Not for me. 2.5
Was a messy album
Music was okay and I don’t care for the tone of her voice.
Hmm, This album was named for Sinatra apparently and it shows with smoky bar piano tunes which I'm sure are cool and trendy for those who base their personality on the music they listen to. but a bit boring. I do like her voice and style of singing. this album too Jazzy though
One of those albums that seemed fashionable to add to this list at the time and it gave them free space to remove when anything even measurably good appeared on the horizon later on. In short, this album was added just to protect having to remove some terrible 1960s album that will always be on this list because its old and you can't change my mind.
This is a tough one. I love Back To Black, the vibe, the arrangements, the lyrics, the singing. It all just works. But this album? No no no. Loose jazzy jams with barely melodic nasal The-Nanny-style vocal complaining via Amy. Just no. Shows a teeny weeny bit of promise, but no.
This was a revealing listen and not in a good way. When the songs aren't just outright mean (Stronger Than Me and Fuck Me Pumps) there's a constant, uncomfortable undercurrent of self-destructive egocentrism. Levels of self-awareness swing wildly - sometimes you get the impression that Winehouse knew exactly what she was and was riffing on it deliberately...but often the vibe is less self-reflective and more self-satisfied. Perhaps to be expected from a nineteen year-old with a major recording contract, but still. The tunes are smooth, the vocals are brilliant, the songs taken as a whole tend to have a really good groove to them. But the bitterness in the lyrics seeps through and makes the whole thing unpleasant.
There's no doubt Winehouse has vocal prowess, but damn if she doesn't make it hard to appreciate it when she insists on doing vocal runs in /every/ /single/ /phrase/. I never once felt enmeshed in the tracks (which have serviceable at best instrumentals that feel a bit GarageBand-esque) because of the constant vocal acrobatics, as Amy never once allows a verse to be a verse so the listener can settle in and appreciate the track.
Good voice. Boring songs.
Thought I was going to fucking hate this when she started singing like a baby but actually i liked it more than Back to Black. More interesting. However still not my thing.
Probably fine if you like her vocals. Rather plain
Ik vind sommige liedjes van Amy Winehous geweldig! Dit album vind ik echter wat tegen vallen. Mij iets te jazzy. **
as much as Mark Ronson does my fucking head in for being an egotistical prick, he did do a hell of a lot to turn wino from some directionless generic R'n'B singer into the behemoth she became with a pretty strong identity. this album is has a couple of standout tunes but the majority is so forgettable that i am choosing to do just that.
Amy is such a smooth soul sistah that she deserves an honorary N-word pass She's one of those musicians I respect plenty, but somehow don't find myself enjoying all that much.
definitely not her hits - boring
Beetje saai, veel van hetzelfde lijkt haast wel..
Te veel soul, te onrustig hoe ze zingt, allemaal niets voor mij, wel goed natuurlijk, maar mijn zege krijgt ze niet.
The idea of Amy Whitehouse - a noughties update on the torch singer mixing jazz and soul is great, and her voice is amazing here too, but the songs don't quite nail it. Next one would.
Un peu surcôté quand même
Tyylikäs levy. Amyn lauluääni ei lemppareimmasta päästä tosin
It’s fine. 2/5
Amy has an impressive voice, and the lounge like setting of the album is kindof interesting. However, overall, I really did not enjoy this at all. 2
Never really understood all the hype about Amy Winehouse. Two great songs, but overall it's a boring record. Stronger than me. Amy Amy Amy.
Couple of interesting songs but on the whole not the most inspiring album the lyrics were a little concieted and self aware.
I get it, Amy Winehouse was immensely admired as a hero for bad girls who stand up strong. The image her legacy projects now is a tragically damaged woman who was just on the verge of really breaking out to stardom but who, consistent with her character, joined The 27 Club. Listening to this record I don’t hear an empowering message or even any remarkable talent to warrant such acclaim. I just hear brash swagger and the embodiment of Marilyn Monroe’s “if you can't handle me at my worst” quote. No one should feel obligated to put up with bad behavior or meager artistry, much less hold it in such high esteem. Clearly I’m the wrong demographic for this record and I’m not in a situation in this world where I would look up to her. Somehow I’m a big fan of Esthero, a fundamentally “similar” artist, but there is some inflection point between the two. In any case, a chronic gripe I have with this list, “Frank” is not the best from Amy Winehouse to promote as essential in place of “Back to Black.” Deeper in the crate does not equate with more essential.
Couldve been worse
I tried. I just cannot stand her voice
Ersatz jazz and delivery lacking any subtlety- 1001 albums to avoid anyone?
pass
I have never understood the hype around her, and this album just makes me feel like I have a point. Her voice is so grating and the songs just weren’t good.
Nah, not for me. Her voice is super grating on this record, so bad that I was kinda shocked. Not surprised she essentially disowned it.
No no, teinislangilla ihan mid. En ole koskaan pitänyt wiinimaan amysta.
Pretty rough. It sounded decent sonically, but the lyrics were pretty bad. I got tired of listening to this one pretty quick.
didn't like it. the album feels pretentious. I think the musical arrangement in done really good I like the jazziness of it, but I have a problem with her voice. I think it ruined the music experience and for the most of the album, I thought to myself, that I would really like the instrumental versions more. 1.5/5
I like Back to Black but had never listened to Frank. To be Frank, it's not as good or even close. Too much cocktail jazz and lack of memorable tunes. Not for me at all.

favs: (there is) no greater love what is it about men rating 0.7/5
Bad..just bad…i dont care abt this woman’s taste in men..childish, immature ideas and lyrics..its not good enough vocally or musically to make up for it..not an album you must listen to before you die.
I don't like how she sings
I can't, I'm sorry. I hate her music.
I hate her voice. I hate that she’s trying to sound complicated and jazzy. She just sounds crap.
Probably take awhile to finish listening to this one. Not digging it much at all. Her voice is pretty annoying, considering she is a Brit trying to sound native New Yorker.
Ko ne voli njen glas, kao naprimjer ja, teško da ovdje može pronaći išta imalo dobro jer je glas 98% sadržaja albuma. Predugo traje i ništa se ne dešava.
Retro tosh.
Nope not my stype
1.5/5 I can't deny the pipes she had but it's not my type of music.
I don't watch Doctor Who, but am aware that the word "Tardis" gained popularity to the point that it was added to the Oxford English Dictionary, defined as follows: "In similative use, esp. as the type of something with a larger capacity than its outward appearance suggests, or with more to it than appears at first glance. Cf. Tardis-like adj." The songs on this album are Tardis-like in the sense that Spotify says that they are 3-ish minutes long and yet they last for 9-and-a-half hours each and go absolutely nowhere. I expected to really like this album and then it was blah af. Another great singer making thoroughly uninteresting music. All sizzle, no steak as it were. On re-listen, I didn’t let tracks play the whole way through because there's like no sonic variance and this production couldn’t sound more early 2000s if it had a Ja Rule feature. Again, wonderful singer, but this whole album sounds like she's doing vocal exercises over one of those default backing tracks on a Fisher Price keyboard.
Interesting voice with some good musical moments. The lyrics are sometimes too plain and the album as a whole is a bit too on the pop-soul music side for my taste. 1.5/5
Bad no like
just really not my genre i love amy winehouse in theory but i got like three songs into this i couldn’t be arsed anymore. also the blatantly homophobic opener brought the mood down a little bit
Blah
I just don’t like Amy Winehouse. And nothing on this album really changed my mind. In My Bed isn’t bad, nor is What Is It About Men, but the rest of this album is poor. What makes Back in Black as an album at least somewhat redeemable is that Amy’s voice is filled out and has a ton of character on that record. Here it is not as mature and, frankly, whiny. Never really understood the appeal of this very overrated artist, and this certainly didn’t change my opinion.
I enjoyed it more than I thought it would. Wouldn't you know - the generator keeps throwing jazz-y stuff at me and it keeps growing on me Edit Mar 17 2026: 3 --> 1. I like jazz much more now, but not these pop vocals
I didn't get the Amy Winehouse hype when I was younger, and I went into this thinking maybe that would have changed as an adult. It has not. Just very much not my thing at all, and her style of singing is not enjoyable for me.
I think having a good voice is the single least impressive characteristic a person can have.
Oh joy another Winehouse album. Alright I took a couple days to listen to this and I just don't like her stuff. I should her voice isn't bad but listening to it just annoys me in a weird way. It always has though. I'm just not a fan.
Not a fan of this one. I like Back to Black, but that album skews more pop than jazz. I feel like there are too many vocal flourishes here, and maybe a different producer would help rein that in some.
Weird choice to have this album on here. If this is here and "Back to Black" isn't, there's something very strange going on. I like Amy Winehouse. I think she had some really clever songwriting and brilliantly produced (thanks to Mark Ronson) songs on her next album. But this is a totally different Amy Winehouse. Scatting her way through some mundane, schmoozey tunes, this album seemed to go on forever. And not in a good way. I still remember the first time I heard "Rehab". Day drinking in London, it came on in a bar, and a few hours later we were singing it full volume in the street. The closest to that Amy Winehouse on this album is the song "Fuck Me Pumps", but that's still a loonnng way off. If I heard any of these songs in a bar, I'd probably be drinking up, to head somewhere else. Looking forward to seeing "Back to Black" come up on this list, but there's 1001 albums I'd prefer to be listening to over this one.
I have (and quite enjoy) Back to Black, but had never taken it upon myself to listen to Amy Winehouse's debut album, so I was kind of looking forward to doing so. Unfortunately, this is nowhere near as good or sonically developed as its successor, and she rubs me the wrong way vocally for large parts of what I managed to get through. I work on the basis of "if I couldn't finish it, it's getting a one star" which is perhaps slightly harsh on this one, but sorry Amy, this just isn't it.
I hadn't heard a single song by Amy Winehouse before today. I had only ever heard of her "amazing talent" and her personal troubles that ultimately consumed her. So, now I've heard a full album, and... well... I hated it. Some of the arrangements are pleasant enough - a few even catchy - but (and I guess I'm in the minority, here) I found her voice irritating and, by the end of this overlong album, downright Macy Grayting. And my god, that last track just WOULD NOT END. I've a simple rule: if an album causes me prolonged auditory pain, it's a 1.
Um disco desinteressante, entediante até. Poderia ter ficado sem ouvi-lo que não me faria falta alguma.
I don’t like this. I can’t say she is untalented, and I get that she is merging 90’s hip hop with 30’s jazz, but it feels very contrived. I know she has passed, and it is a shame. I don’t feel like this music is for me, but worse it feels like the people who it is for should go listen to Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill.
Poor Amy made so many wrong decisions in her career and in her life. R.I.P. Fav: -
Lyssnade för lite men jag har så, så, så svårt för detta. Nästan så jag ryser!
Not sure how long I’ll make it with this one. People rave about her voice, but I find it kind of contrived, style-wise, and it grates on me. The lyrics are not doing anything for me. I guess she’s a strong, independent woman that likes a bad boy…maybe? Sounds like she’s slagging off slutty chicks while also kind of presenting herself as one? Eh, I’m finding that I don’t even care what she’s singing about. This feels like Starbucks radio with some slightly racey material. Frank sucks. 1.5/5
Избавьте меня от творчества Уайнхаус.
I could tell from the first minute of the album that this one was not going to be for me. I don't like Winehouse's style at all. Her scatting, over the top embellished vocals and falsettos just put me off. I shouldn't speak ill of the dead but I don't ever want to hear this again. The lyrics are shallow and tasteless. I'd have kicked you to the curb too, Amy. Even the music itself sounds like crappy video game pool lounge music. Just not my vibe. It's uninteresting after several minutes of listening. Only four songs in and I felt like I had been listening for an eternity. The album drags on, I wish it had been edited down a bit. I dont really have any standout songs off this album. They all blended together and while I tried to sustain interest throughout my listen, I just wanted it to end. I'm irritated. 1 star for me. I'm sure Winehouse's other album is on here, so we'll see if that fares any better than this one if and when it comes around. If that is the case, I'm shocked both albums made this list because this one wasn't it...
terrible
Overrated, over hyped.
Did we REALLY need to experience this? I’m assuming Back to Black is also on the list and that would suffice for this sound.
I just don't get the hype
Not for me
Somehow more vile than Back to Black. Impressive.
Sorry Amy but I don't like your music. Although she was probably a genuine credible artist, she was still packaged like the X Factor artists they were trying to differentiate from. I remember this album being advertised on the TV, like Micheal Bublé albums were, and that was like the kiss of death for me back then. Musically and vocally it's competent, but it's boring.
While Amy's voice is undeniably powerful, the overwhelming subject matter of the songs (men) made the album feel like it droned on. 'October Song', 'Amy Amy Amy' and the jazz musicians were the highlights.
Hate her voice, hate her personality, there are better singers in my extended family
Insipid pseudo-jazz and poppy neo-soul music. Uninspired songwriting, sometimes verging into terrible. Overwrought, brash, headache-inducing vocals with some very forced quirks/flourishes. Loud and unpleasant mixing/mastering to boot. Never understood what the appeal was. 1*
Not a fan
This is garbage, not gonna lie. Lyrically, musically, compositionally -- just derivative and starkly immature. A few interesting trumpet runs bogged down in boring arrangements don't save it from the "no thanks" pile. Circling back to the lyrics again -- so, so, so jarringly infantile and irritatingly over-enunciated and oversung.
Me no likey Too squeaky for me
She's kind of an insipid, mean girl pick-me-girl, isn't she?
Her voice is awful on this album. Terribly tragic. Much like Amy.
Not good. I don;t understand the hype. There are MUCH better jazz/soul albums out there. This wasn't even entertaining as background music. While I don;t wish that she had died, it was probably the most entertaining thing about her.
First listen
Imagine being a 25 year old guy dating Amy Winehouse and you’re going through some stuff so she decides to write some songs calling you a pussy. 1.46
Not for me. 1/5
The more I listen to this train wreck the more I understand why she only has 2 songs people remember.
jazz music very slow i dont like it, idont like jazzy music that much
i did not like it because I don't like the beat . i dont like this one ether because all t he songs sounded the same
I'm a big fan of Back to Black (which I fully expect to give 5*s to when it comes up), but this was the first time hearing this album for me. And I'm sorry to say that this was the biggest disappointment I've had on this so far. Ultimately these songs are bad, and they are certainly not saved by Amy's voice (which wavers between 'ok' and 'whiney'). Most of the songs just don't have a good tune (e.g. Fuck me Pumps). And those that hint at good tunes often have tiresome lyrics. Sorry Amy, but this is going in the bin.

Didn’t listen
I don't care about any of this Track 2 picks up in the middle, but that might just be in comparison to how boring the rest of it was. Jesus Christ I though this would be something new, or there would be some extra spark to it. It could be from the early 1900's and sound the exact same. Just why? I also understand why none of this was on the radio. Kinda hate song 4. 8 seems better. Decent melody underneath in verse (keyboard effect?). Or again, maybe getting used to it. I forgot I was listening to this. 10 seems more like a beat than music melodies. Which is honestly a bit better. Still wouldn't want to hear it again. 11 reminds me a little bit of I Get Lonely Oh god this 1920 shit again STOP ALREADY FUCJ Are we done? Cool I'm not doing that again.
This may be the most vapid, self absorbed, and unenjoyable album I’ve heard this year. I did a quick bit of reading about the album before jumping in, and I was promised “jazz”. I fought my way through the record and was left wondering where the jazz is. It’s soulful, I guess? But not in anything more than a superficial way. It’s really impressive just how much Amy Winehouse loved to write songs about herself. It felt like 80% of the lines in this album contained the word “me”, “I”, or “my”. The only discernible story telling or meaning is how much she loves shitty dudes who don’t give a fuck about her and whining about how hard her life is. I truly believe this albums title is an affront to the legacy of Sinatra. I would say the music contained herein is to Frank Sinatra as Oasis is to The Highwaymen. That is to say, entirely unrelated, yet far far worse. I’ve heard for years how incredible her voice is but I don’t really understand, maybe her other album is better? The vocal delivery on this record is just an obnoxious imitation of far more talented singers like Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, and my personal favourite Nina Simone. 54 minutes of my life that I fear I won’t get back. 1*.
Stronger Than Me
nah
Favorite part was when it ended
Sounds like this girl had one two many of the cocktails at the bar she was singing at.
Honestly not the worst so I can’t give this a one star, but didn’t personally love most of the songs. Really good voice just not my type of music I guess
I am not a fan of Amy Winehouse. This is the first and so far only album I haven't listened to so far. It won't be the last if I come across a Cranberries or another Winehouse album (which I am certain will most likely happen.)
Not Doing it
not my type
I did not like this much. Her voice often sounded like a muted trumpet and that just got annoying after a while. I listened through "Outro" and didn't bother with the rest; I figured that's where it logically ended so I "made it through." 1.5/5
Not my music at all
I don't consider this my cup of tea.
Mi ha rotto il cazzo alla quarta canzone
Bad
This just made me so sad. The band trying so hard, her talent so evident. Downgraded for being a shameless money grab.
Pass
No va
I skipped the first song where she champions toxic masculinity. Then I skipped the second song where she started singing off-key. I listened to a little of the third song for the few seconds it took to find a new album to play.
to jazzy
don’t like Amy Winehouse
Technically impressive singing, subject matter was not for me
Not my cup of tea. Best songs were when she was doing scat and not singing one star.
Unlistenable warbler. Winehouse cannot sing and I suspect her popularity was solely due to the pornographic nature of her song titles. This is trash
Ich dachte, ich schätze AW. Aber diese Platte gefällt mir gar nicht. Ein Stern.
Tuneless and the vox were boring.
Not interested
Very whiney voice. Avoid.
Not my cuppa
Amy's voice makes it listenable, but some of the songwriting and music here is actively bad. I had to skip past a handful of songs and couldn't finish the album in full.
Why is this album on the list. It is totally unremarkable and Back to Black was already included (good album that would not make it on my own 1001 list but one can the rationale for including it in the list).
Overrated!
If nothing else, the background tracks were pretty solid. I really struggled with this album.
Mærkeligt homofobisk, og lidt kedelig. Kom ikke forbi sang 3
Not for me.
couldn't bring myself to finish this. i can't stand her singing.
🤨
2/10
ummmm…. this is a weird choice (once again). this is appropriative, all over the place, and sometimes out of key. i dont understand this. why not pick the polished final album? thebone before she died? the one that straddles pop, rnb, n jazz in a fun and dumb pop way? like, that one is the one. anyway, bloated, long, not good.
Dreadful
More Brit bias evident here. Who cares about this trash? No tunes and an irritating voice, try-hard wannabe '60s lounge singer doomed to sound like a bad parody. I put on Neil Young's "Trans" as a palate cleanser after enduring this, a flawed flash of originality that has infinitely greater claim to be on this list. Ho hum
Imagine singing about a man being gay cuz he loves you--a woman--plus reinforcing gender stereotypes. We're not about that homophobia and transphobia lol
No.
1/5. I don’t know what it is but this definitely ain’t it. Feels so forced and nothing stands out as listenable. Don’t get the Amy winehouse hype, wish I could.
