Reviews (page 12 of 13)

Why'd you always put me in control? All is need is for a man to live up to his role Always have to comfort you every day But that is what I need you to do, are you gay?

Definitely a unique talent, but way too jazzy for my taste.

This album might show Winehouse’s promise. But there isn’t a world where *this* debut is one of the 1001 albums you absolutely must hear. Good vocals, but not especially memorable. The songs aren’t mature. Props to Winehouse for “F*** Me Pumps,” though.

I knew what to expect when I put this on, but surprisingly I didn’t want to turn it off immediately.

Her other album is great. I suffered through this one. 2/5.

Phenomenal vocals, good production but uninspired arrangements; the limpest jazz

When it came up the cynic in me suspected this particular Amy Winehouse album was included on the strength of the artist’s reputation alone. After listening a few times I still can’t decide if that’s true… but I think it probably is. On the one hand, there’s definitely talent here, and a handful of tracks hooked me in (like the double-header of Help Yourself and Amy Amy Amy). On the other hand, it really does get quite samey very quickly, and a lot of the production and lyrical themes are pretty bland. 2.5

Kinda doesnt do it for me. Faux-jazz pop just is that interesting to me and a lot of songs are good but I just forget them immediately or get annoyed by the bee boo bee da doos. But the production is very good and every once and a while a song gets everything together. Fav: You sent me Flying/Cherry

There’s a lot of drug and sex fuelled dross in this album. There are snippets of jazzy vibes that are pleasant to listen to, and it just had me feeling “what if”. Don’t feel I can give this any more than a 2 but the jazzy/slower tracks are reasonable, at least in places.

I'm a nymphomaniac (and drug fuelled) surprised by men sort of thing. Shock. I was expecting better if I am honest as always considered her a talent even if not my personal taste. I think better to come from her. Didn't reach the tempo and jazz fest I was hoping for. Maybe next time.

Amy Winehouse is a great singer but this album doesn't put her voice to good use. The album doesn't flow, the accompanying music sounds robotic and overproduced, and the lyrics are shallow and one-dimensional. Also I quite quickly started to find her voice a bit grating, largely due to the style of the song writing which constantly pushes her up into a higher register. Based on her reputation, I was expecting to like it more so I'm slightly surprised.

Objectively pretty good but subjectively really not my thing. Amazing she got as popular as she did though. Never would have seen that coming.

**An ok album, most tracks sound alike

About halfway through I put on Jill Scott.

Plutôt chiant.

I liked dat rnb shit

We don't tolerate cheaters in this household.

Jazz. Old school. Technically hit all the notes, didn’t feel very emotionally connected. Not my jam.

Considering I'd listened to this before it was surprising that none of it really made an impression on this re-listen. It's all very bland and with none of the hooks or wit of the follow up. That's not to say that the singing is bad - there are great vocals, and the musicians are all competent. But where's the spark?

Cabaret pop from a teenager struggling with substance abuse and her relationships. Some offensive lyrics out of the gate in Stronger Than Me immediately turned me off. Some of the later songs were interesting to me, Fuck Me Pumps and October Song in particular.

Good voice. Musically unambitious

I get it. She had a pretty good voice and could write a song. Unfortunately the hype takes over and she becomes a legend for a generation. A Good Jewish Girl Gone Bad, the new Frank, Dinah, Ronnie, the first millennial to drink her way into the 27 club… In another world, I’d applaud her performance in some jazz dinner club, but I wouldn’t have bought her CD at the end of the night.

This was just okay. Her distinct voice shines, but the songs aren't good. Her second album is magic.

really an album i wanted to be over quickly

i am not as bothered by the lyrics as others probably because i don't really listen to music for the lyrical meanings. but sometimes it feels like her incredible voice is kinda wasted on the accompaniment which doesn't ever wow me. too many fade outs.

She has a great voice. The music is half jazz and half R&B, and to me it's not an enjoyable version of either of those styles.

Better than bad hat band

I didn't feel like it all fit together very well. Fuck Me Pumps sounded like Walking In A Winter Wonderland

Love Amy down but it's not great

Not for me, Amy Whinehouse (rude, I know). Felt like elevator music with intense whiny vocals.

This debut is just an inferior version of Back To Black, and two Winehouse albums on the list seems a bit excessive. Same goes for the runtime.

Highlights: Stronger than me In my bed Amy Amy Amy

Neosouljazzwhatever is just not my thing.

For as long as I can remember I've heard of Amy Winehouse being praised as one of the best artists in the music industry, but I could never be bothered to listen to her. Now that I have, I really, really don't understand the appeal, why she's so highly praised, or held in such high regard. It's just... mediocre at best? Maybe her other albums are better, but this one really isn't. The vocals are jarring.

This is quite annoying, she was obviously a talented lady and I have been wanting to listen to one of her albums for some time just never taken the time. I don't believe this one does her justice. Not anything I would want to listen to again.

I don’t like jazz, but there is some of Amy Winehouse’s music I enjoy. On this album, the standout tracks are ‘Stronger Than Me’, ‘In My Bed’ and ‘What Is It About Men’. The rest not so great.

Another casualty of 2000s minimalism. It’s such a shame one of the most gifted singers of a generation wasted her talents making coffee house singles.

She had a great voice. She was tragically vulnerable to addiction and she seemed to have a magnetic personality. And yet… I find her music a sad parody of a bygone era. It’s just Motown standards but with edgier subject material. It just doesn’t interest me

It was fine, I guess. It's not really my type of music. This is just about the vaguest review I've done, but I'm tired. No thumbs-up for me!

She's got a great voice, and some of the music is ok.

Not for me.

I was looking forward to this. Then got disappointed. What a load of warbling.

Me gusta más su otro disco

Great vocals, but overall not for me

I know it was a big selling album and it's good. Just not a listen to regularly good. Amazing wasted talent for sure but.... I really at times don't care for her voice. It's hits or miss and it's not on one song. I can hear her streaming and be okay cool then the next I just can't listen to it. I know I am in the minority it just seems like to much production went into and it's to polished.

A pretty weak debut, tbh I don't think it belongs on the 1001 list and wouldn't be if it wasn't due to her next album, which rightfully is in. It shows promise, but it is way too long, and gets kinda monotony after a while. 3 hidden tracks when you want to finish don't help to get over that sensation that it should have offered less.

amy amy amy more like samey samey samey

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Decent smoking lounge type music.

2.5 - fine just not for me

are you gay?

The longer it went the more bored I got.

So the last time a Winehouse album appeared on my list I admitted that I had the wrong impression of her and I was shocked at the amount of variety on the album (Back to Black). It wasn’t a perfect “5” but it was genuinely very good and I was super won over. So maybe I went into this album with too high hopes which were kinda shattered when the very first song’s message rubbed me the wrong way. There were songs on this album I liked, but I really disliked a lot of this album. I appreciate what this album is trying to do, but I don’t think this album accomplishes that. Coincidentally I think what this album is attempting is perfected on “Back to Black”. I think, based on how this album sounds, that a lot of love for this album comes from the blending of rnb and jazz, which is like peanut butter and jelly, however this is also about as original as peanut butter and jelly. So despite not having an original sound, you hear that Amy is trying to carry the album on her vocal skills. Whether or not she does carry the album is up for debate, but ultimately I think the album starts on the wrong foot and doesn’t recover.

Amy Winehouse is attacking me personally

Blech. I just don't like Amy Winehouse.

She’s very talented, but I blame her for the popularization of the “singing in cursive” accent that plagues modern indie music. RIP tho

Back To Black is undeniably a really good album, even if it isn’t to everyone’s taste. Wonder why they gave me Frank? So far it’s ok, but honestly a 3 seems generous. Her adopted blaccent has always been very tough on my ears. Very boring album.

Meh all gets quite samey talented girl though

not my favorite amy but impressive for being so young

Ganska intetsägande album, men bra röst för all del

Artistin ulosanti on tällä levyllä pitkälti koristelua, mutta epätyypillisen viihdyttävää sellaista. Ja oli siellä jotain sisällöltäänkin kiinnostavaa. En tarkoita scattausta. 2,5

Ok 2/5

Not my style

So it’s innovative because she has attitude? Next album is way better.

Beautiful

It's no Back to Black. While her voice is still great, none of the songs on this album do anything interesting with it and I wouldn't listen to this one again.

I don’t like her voice. Never quite sat right with me. It was okay, just not for me. Girl power.

I was actually going to hit did-not-listen even though I DID listen, but I don't see the option now. Must have waited to long? Anyway. Against popular opinion I loathe and have always loathed her music. Apart from the fact that I hate this style of music, I find her voice nasally and grating. But I feel I have to give her at least a 2 just because she's so popular.

Not for me. Liked the first song but found myself wandering off and couldn’t get into it.

As much as I liked the jazzy yet modern sounding melodies and Amy’s voice, the lyrics of several songs were problematic and kept me from enjoying the album. They’re objectifying, demeaning to both herself and the men she talks about, and it almost feels like she recognizes this fact and makes excuses for it.

Great production and performance from ensembles. Can't get into her thing.

This was okay but not as good as her second album

Nice enough

Good record, but also not a big fan of this style

That's a lot of good signing

Grew on me as it went on, but fundamentally not my cup of tea. Not awful for a relaxing morning listen with Baby J. Best tracks: Help Yourself, In my Bed, Amy Amy Amy.

Great voice, but this album just didn't do it for me. Got bored half way though and stopped listening.

If I wanted to listen to Ella Fitzgerald I would

beautiful voice, not my cup of coffee apart from that.

The potential is there, but it just never hits the mark. You can tell this is her debut album. None of the songs are memorable and I'm left feeling horribly let down by something that could've been great.

An album that I actually rather liked on first listen, but after a few times... ehhhnnn. I will admit that she has quite a voice. And there's a nice mix of influences here. There's jazz, those classic crooners, RnB, bossa nova. But holy shit, most of the lyrics on this album are so goddamn CRINGE, literally from the word go. Enough that it actually overshadows the good parts. On top of that, there's not much of a structure to the album, and I feel that it kind of drones on. Would have been a 3 if not for the lyrics. Fav tracks: You Sent Me Flying / Cherry, In My Bed, October Song

She has a good voice, but I'm not getting into this

Again, same as Winehouse's other album, this one is fine, and I understand why fans of the genre (R&B) would like it, but I don't find anything very interesting and definitely not nearly as impressive as people make her out to be. I don't like her voice, and the songwriting is fine, but, again, it's not a genre or style that makes me feel anything new or significant, personally.

This album was mid in my opinion because I do not enjoy the sound of her voice, but I like the instruments. I also am not a huge fan of the lyrics.

the first song I don't like the way it started. I don't like it at all. 1 the second song started ight and i don't like it either.2 the last song i don't like it either but its better than the first one.

the first song was bad it wasnt good the second song was ok. I dont really like thos ecause its not my type of music

I liked "You sent me flying" because I like the lyrics. "Take the Box" is okay but I wasn't as fun because the music stays the same through most of the song. I thought "October song" was okay but I wouldn't normally pick it because it's not really fun.

the album is okay i just don't like her voice, she says the words kinda weird and i don't really like the beat to the songs the beat seems the same in the songs. the last songs beat is okay I overall don't really like it

Never really listened to Amy Winehouse. Not that good. Not a great or interesting voice.

amazing singer, bad writer

Yeah, I've never really enjoyed Amy winehouse, so it was interesting to sit down and listen to a full album. You can feel the groove and understand why she hit with people....it's just not for me. But I'd leave it on if I needed relaxing music....maybe.

Mumbling on top of generic jazz tunes

I had high expectations for this album and I was disappointed after giving it a listen. I enjoy Amy’s voice to an extent, but her vocal style often times seems forced, more like an imitation of her influences. The music really didn’t do much for me either, just felt bored. I hear her follow up is better, so we shall see.

Never a big fan of Amy. Female vocal jazz singers are fine with me but I found her vocal style more R&B. Such a shame her life ended so soon as despite my reservations about her I fully accept from those in the know that she was a wonderful talent. Never listened to this album before but was aware of it and always thought that it was an album of Frank Sinatra covers. Silly mistake to make as I could never imaging Frank singing Fuck Me Pumps. It was a pleasant listen as a background whilst going about my ablutions but that’s where this record will stay. 2/5 7/1/25

This album is the worst parts about dating a woman (her whining, cheating, singing) without getting to fuck her

An old-school voice we lost too early. Unfortunately, Amy's strong contralto and lovely jazz instrumental are overshadowed by loud and overproduced drums to an extente where one asks themselves what they are listening to. A jazz record? An R&B record? A hip-hop record? The rhythms of the latter two take away this album's soul and do not fit in at all, hence a two.

Amy, with her beautiful blues voice and jazz influence, tries to emulate the antiquated groups of the same genre from the 50s and coats with shameful and despicable lyrics, depicting her more as a whore than an independent woman. Despite her efforts, she objectifies the roles within a relationship, which makes me feel very uncomfortable due to such a toxic and classic view of a couple.

The Good: An album about being honest! The Bad: Finding out that it’s not about being honest… The Ugly: Trying to figure out what Frank would’ve thought about this… Yes, Amy was a whirlwind in, what was regretfully, a stale period in music when nothing “special” was being produced. And if we go judging by the amount of Amy clones whom popped up left and right, there was money to be made singing like a lounge singer… I had never listened to this album, so maiden voyage… and I did not particularly care for it. Amy’s voice, though nice, is not my cup of tea, and quickly one start to find it annoying. The “hip-hop” feel that this album also has with the scratching and beats makes me want to hit the skip button… So, glad that there are plenty of people who view(ed) Amy as one of the greatest… I am not one of them. 2* as it wasn’t something to make me vomit...

I was surprised at how much I disliked this. The production is sloppy. She’s either indecipherable or impersonating another singer.

Amy Winehouse made some wonderful music, this album is not an example of it

never was a fan

I love Amy's voice, and can see why this is on the list (or was, apparently). However, Back up Black is MUCH better. This one hasn't aged very well in terms of lyrical content, particularly the first track. I get that she was going for a modern rage on vintage music, but it's best for everyone that we leave the 50s gender roles in the 50s. A few good songs though, particularly In My Bed.

Great voice, awful songwriting. Back to Black was SO much better

Unlike most of the other albums I've listened to on this website, I can see clear as day where this album innovates as well as the impact that it has on popular music. I just don't think that the genre it belongs to is all that good. Most of the praise I've heard about Amy Winehouse is linked to how personal and sassy/funny her music is. Maybe I got off on the wrong foot by starting out with this album instead of Back to Black, but these lyrics are all incredibly boring to me.

FAVO: Intro/ Stronger than me, Fuck me pumps, Help yourself

Some weird gender stuff on the first track (you’ve gotta be stronger than me, “are you gay?” - YIKES), and I didn’t like how it landed on my ear. I prefer the Back to Black album and didn’t finish this one.

Amy, Amy, Amy. She's talented, she's chaotic, no role model for sure. Frank is not a bad album, it's not great either; couldn't relate to any of the songs. However it is a great precursor to her masterpiece Back To Black.

This album was a letdown after having been pleasantly surprised by her sophomore album when that was generated. Here, on her debut, there is not much that reminds of the catchy, pop-oriented songs on Back to Black, rather focusing on jazzy songs. And I don’t like jazz. Won’t listen again, whereas I return to many of the songs from BtB

Never had listened to an album of hers before. Only what I heard on the radio at the time. Not bad but not really my jam either.

I assume ‘Back to Black’ is also on this list? Which it 100% should be. Struggling to hear why this is included, though. If this were my first time listening to Amy Winehouse it would probably also be my last.

Let's be honest here. The only reason this album was included in the list was because at the time the book was first published (2005), this was Amy Winehouse's sole album, and for some reason they really wanted to include her. This is made even more obvious by the fact that by the second edition (2007), this album was already out of the 1001, rightfully replaced by its successor. In conclusion, we don't really need to hear this one, even the book's authors agree.

Jazzy, not my favorite

I'm not really a fan of Amy Winehouse. Something about her just rubs me wrong, and I guess her music doesn't really speak to me the way it seems to for others. With Back to Black, I could appreciate her talent even without really liking it. This one just isn't at that level yet.

At times her voice is sublime at others it sounds like someone has stepped on the tail of a cat who has nasal congestion!

I love Back to Black. This however was a drag - there are moments where you hear the style that is to come, but they are fleeting.

i think my relationship is too stable for this one

Easy listen, a album for women, very much about having a man album

Album was okay. Not as interesting as the other album of hers I’ve listened to for this list. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

It's not generally my cup of tea but I understand the appeal - she definitely has an amazing voice. I liked "Amy Amy, Amy" but a lot of the other songs I just can't imagine myself being in the mental space ever actually to put on and enjoy. I guess if I needed something slow and jazzy I'd throw on "There Is No Greater Love" but..idk.

It was okay. Her vocals are interesting. It seems to be about her love life. I can see how these lyrics can be impactful to some.

I honestly didn't care for this....

I wish I had Amy's incredible voice! But I'd sing different music! Talented musicians, but I think this is one of the deletions from the list I don't mind, it doesn't feel like a well put together album.

There were a few moments where it felt like this album were building towards something great, like a mix of a smokey jazz bar serving gin and martinis and a 1990s asphalt basketball court surrounded with neon graffiti and hammer pants, but then it just fizzled out and became uninteresting background music. I mean this as no slight to Ms. Winehouse's tallents—I simply didn't connect with it, and I don't have enough interest to return to it and try again.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I love her voice but she puts too much into it sometimes, too much vibrato and accents perhaps? The music is good but the production has weird things happening in almost every song; an off sounding bass kick, tinny/thin high hats that just dont fit, I think i heard bongo's at one point. Perhaps its showing its age and she was showing her age being only 19 when recorded.

my second of two amy winehouse releases while she was alive. i enjoyed her album 'back to black' well enough so i was anticipating enjoying this one too. well, not so much. her voice is still very good but the songs and production here leave a lot to be desired. in particular, the production has not aged well and sounds really dated. a lot of the songs, i thought, were not particularly well written. it sounded like they left a few bum notes from amy on this one too, and some tardiness on the rhythms. maybe it was supposed to be more laid back but to me, it came off as sloppy. really disappointed in this one, not going to lie.

A lot of the lyrics are interesting but the style of music doesn't appeal to me. 2 stars or D+ for me.

I didn't recognize the name and I quickly realized why. It's not my kind of music. Her voice also started to irritate me so I gave up on this one.

Another artist who got huge because they passed away. Dont get me wrong. She has a great voice but this album gets boring after a while.

The songs on the album and the singing of Amy Winehouse are extremely competent technically, however, most of the songs on the album are way too jazzy to be interesting. "What is it About Men" is definitely the best song!

It was alright, I'm not the biggest Amy fan unfortunately

It was okay. Kind of cool to hear pre-Amy Winehouse Amy Winehouse. But this one was pretty much a pretty good singer doing karaoke.

No Jared at all in this record. Shame. I can't deny the talent of Amy Winehouse but it doesn't add anything to what I want to listen to. Some times her voice is very jarring... And at others, it's incredible. She has some good and interesting ideas going on in this record and at other times, the ideas fall flat and it juet comes down to, I don't care. I don't see myself, nor can I see a scenario where anyone would throw this on and listen to it on their own. That's being a bit harsh. I get there is an audience for this.. But to me, it's too hit and miss, and I would be skipping to the 1, 2, or 3 songs thwt I didn't mind. Not worth it.

I expected more from her fame tbh

Helt bra, men onödigt långt.

Look I get her talent, but it's not really for me.

Instrumentally not very exciting or lush as her second album. Lyrically its mostly about her boyfriends and how they treat her and cheat her and all that. Huge inspirations from the R&B music of the 50s and 60s. Too long. Liked: Intro/Stronger than me, Fuck me Pumps (favourite), Moody's Mood for love, Help Yourself.

I’ll be Frank, as someone who is a huge fan of Back To Black I went into this expecting something similar and I was a little disappointed. Her voice is as good as ever, but I guess this downtempo jazz style just isn’t for me. Favorite songs were Intro/Stronger Than Me, Fuck Me Pumps, and In My Bed.

i really did not like it at all NNN

I would have a drink with her, but I am picking the music, and it is not this

It seems to me like Amy Winehouse gets the Adele treatment where anything she ever released is considered good, even when it’s remarkably average. Back To Black is a fantastic album, but Frank left a lot to be desired. Maybe I’d like this more if I was going through a breakup or in my 20s, but I couldn’t get into this at all. She’s obviously a talented singer, and there are some decent songs here, but overall it’s just not great and doesn’t deserve to be on this list.

She did have a voice, but even if it was pretty powerful, I never really liked her inflexions, the timbre, something is off for me. Musically, I like jazz but I always prefer when it's instrumental. And when the beats start, to give the background jazz music a modern twist, I find it pretty annoying. I never really got all the fuss around Winehouse, and listening to this album did not convinced me that I am missing something.

Meh not my favorite

I just don't get the hype around her. She's good but not great, and this record was unremarkable.

Not keen on the drum machine. I prefer the warmer production of Back To Black. A good warm-up for that, I guess, but the songs or the sound didn't grab me in the way that album did.

I'm not really sure what to say about Frank. I know I'm suppose to love it. But it almost passed me by in the way that listening to Serenade Radio does. The voice is of course superb. But the songs aren't quite there. Fuck Me Pumps made me smile. I'd love to hear that on Serenade Radio at 7am.

Amy Winehouse was a fine singer, and sure could reach listeners of different generations and tastes. This isn't her greatest work, and it sure isn't essential listening. Her voice is a lot better on Back To Black.

Seemed like one long song. I like her (sadder) songs about addiction more than these songs about dangerous men.

2.5 Yeah, there’s a reason we mainly remember her for Back to Black. Her voice is technically good here, but she’s still aping other people’s styles, she hasn’t come into her own. The album is too long, and the songs are bad and/or extremely forgettable. That first song is one of the worst I’ve heard doing this project thus far!

really good, deep voice, which I really value, but the beat and sound overall are pretty simple and the whole album is quite boring to listen

Really not that good. I understand back to Black being on this list, but this album is really a step down

Saknar hits.

Withholding my Amy winehouse takes until after back to black, but this album wasn't for me.

If you're going to go grave-robbing, at least make it exciting. The music here is unimaginative, and only the attempt at approximating Billie Holiday moves this a notch or two up the Pat Boone larceny scale. People often comment on Winehouse's voice, which I'm not even convinced about. It sounds sickly, a curdling of all the great jazz voices she both cites and imitates.

Great singer. Terrible lyricist. I remember Back To Black being better than this one. The lyrical content hasn't aged well and the album drags at points.

should have been called 'bill' or 'kev' instead

I understand she has a great voice… I don’t understand how she became the icon that she is. Meh.

Not my style but even considering that I find her voice quite annoying - shrill. I wonder how much money she saved by using a drum machine instead of a musician.

Great voice but not my thing.

One of the best crooners/skatters around. I just don’t particularly like crooning or skatting. RIP to a legend.

Expected to like this much more than I did since I liked Back to Black. A little too scoobadoobedoo jazz for me unfortunately. Re that first song: Amy Winehouse’s homophobia walked so Katy Perry could run 💅 (if Jeremy made the same joke that’s because we talked about it!!!)

Bit weird, not sure i'd come back to it. Her voice sounds great but it didn't really grab me. Also not a fan of scat singing but that's not Amy's fault

She has a good voice, but I found this tedious to listen to. The songs did not grab me, I was bored. Give me Norah Jones every time over this.

She had a good voice and the concept is good, I just found the album a bit one note.

unexpected to have multiple Amy Winehouse albums here, and not sure that it’s really necessary. This album is a bit jazzier but not as powerful or memorable as Back to Black (which I gave a 3). the majority of songs are about relationships and/or sex. It just doesn’t grab me and more washes over me. You can see the talent is there and nothing is bad, but a lot of the songs are just whatever.

I feel like this is only on the list because she only made 2 albums. It's pretty forgettable with some outdated (even at release) notions of masculinity.

86/1001 2/5

Never got the appeal.

Misandry right out of the gate. This isn't looking good. Nope. This is toxic AF. Winehouse is a mess and a hotbed of drama that I have always gone out of my way to avoid. She's a great singer, but it's unfortunate that the balance of her voice on this recording is constantly in clip. I usually don't listen to the content of the lyrics, but that's all this album has to offer me, being anodyne backing tracks to spotlight Winehouse's voice. Since I can avoid the content of the lyrics, I'm going to avoid the album.

This must have been added before Back to Black came out, right? I can’t see any reason why this would need to stay on the list after BtB. Anyway, I’ve never really been an Amy Winehouse fan. I do like the singles off BtB but the rest of her repertoire, including this entire album, is a chore for me to listen to. Her voice and her songwriting are not nearly as developed on this album.

I can see why it was popular but not for me

It's got some good elements, not my genre tho. Will I listen to again: 10%

Back To Black is a far superior album

Raw voice… but album not my cup of tea

Interesting album to start with. Drums are nice. the chords 😍. decent grooves throughout. She loves talking about cigarettes. Some kinda separate storyline happening with the intros/outros. She’s talking directly to herself a lot. Feels like a lot of foreshadowing, knowing what we know. In my bed is a vibe musically. A stand out. I don’t like her voice at all. I tried. there’s not enough variety. Socially it doesn’t change enough. Even if the music tries to her voice brings it all back. If you heard anyone singing or humming her songs to themselves it would be cringe as hell. Surprisingly the lyrical content picks up halfway. Ok nevermind. I can’t take “amy amy amy” seriously. Outro idea is cool. But I wish it would have started with the idea a little more clearly.

Nope, don't particularly care for this one. And I know her voice is pretty much universally considered to be a good voice, but I didn't find myself particularly caring for it either.

Her voice is really good, but none of these songs grabbed me in any real way.

Iconic voice. Simply one of a kind. So tragic we don't get to hear any new songs from hear. I don't typically listen to this kind of music. I don't hate it but it's not my first choice but I can not hate Amy and her one of a kind voice.

She has a nice voice, but I don’t really care for any of the songs, the writing doesn’t speak to me. I’d totally listen to her doing jazz vocal classics, but I wouldn’t run this album back.

This was okay. Not my fave Amy and some of these gave weird vibes. The October one was good but the slow ones - meh.

This is a tough listen with hindsight. Underproduced too. Just feels too light since we know what can be with Black

It took 43 people to make this? Unpopular opinion but I think Amy Winehouse’s voice is weak and annoying. The songwriting left me cringing. Much like every other post 2000 female r& b artist. Very commercial and definitely not for me. Owes too much to its influences.

a bunch of skips for me, and i sit through a lot...

Amy's vocal talent is undeniable, even though she was 19 or 20 when she recorded this. The problem is that outside of a couple of songs, the production is corny as hell, and has aged terribly. You can see why she came to dislike the album in few years between its release and her death.

why the hell did Salaam Remi want her to sound like Alicia Keys so badly

it has all the ingredients but the cake comes out with a weird aftertaste.

Having a good voice doesn't make a great album if all of the songs suck.

Nothing to see here, your time is better spent elsewhere, move on. Unmemorable, except maybe Fuck Me Pumps. There are hundreds of albums like this out there that no one talks about, why this one made the list beats me. Guess my mama was wrong after all, getting wasted in public does pay off!

Good voice. Lyrics make no sence. Not that good 2/5

her voice is impressive, not my style tho

Very blues

Another one where I appreciate the artist being on the list but not this album. To my ears, neither the material nor the production are worthy of Amy.

I think I was kind to Back to Black a few years ago, but this is just reheated easy listening with a few swears and edgy bits. Pretty bland.

The raw materials are here: the voice (most of the time), the lyrical subject matter, etc, but it hasn’t come together into a cohesive whole just yet. This one is a bit all over the place musically, though always “jazzy.”

Her voice is great, but the songs aren’t. And the production seemed to want a lofi sound, but instead it sounds cheap.

Sounds just fine, but not my cup o' chai.

It was ok. I don’t feel it was bad, I enjoyed some of it.

What a difference a good (or in this case bad) producer makes.

This wasn't really something I cared for. That said, I did like "What Is It About Men"

Not really my thing but she does it well and has a hell of a voice. There were some memorable numbers but I just don’t see myself going back to it. Glad to have heard it though.

“Fuck Me Pumps” is dope and Amy’s voice oozes soul but this album is just OK. Thank God we got “Back in Black.” Such a tragedy that we lost such a talent. Shame on all of us.

Iha jeez

Not my cup of tea. Wanted to give it a 3 but nothing stood out enough

I liked the tone overall but found some lyrics problematic. I was excited to listen to it as I like what I know of Amy Winehouse's music, but found this album underwhelming. "Amy Amy Amy" as my favorite. 2/5

Beautiful voice but an album is a little slow. Not a huge fan of her work but like her life story. Really like Veronica that is not on this album. Most songs sounded the same to me which may be expected with such a distinctive sound. Liked Know You Know and understand appeal to to F**K Me Pumps. 2

Incredible vocals, as expected. Really nice production too but the whole album bored me. The same vocal style with a catchy drum beat and vamped jazz chords for an hour does tend to do that though. It isn't bad by any means and it's quite pleasant to listen to just not my preference.

Was disappointed to start here. Going into it I'm not a fan of Amy but really only knew Rehab. The song was annoying and overplayed for me at the time, which turned me off. Then the irony with her death just really made it clear my life would be fine if I never heard her again. But I wanted to try this 1001 albums journey. The intro scatting had me just about pull the plug after 6 seconds, but I stuck with it and it wasn't too bad after that. The style was interesting and jazzy, but overall not really anything that will find its way into my playlist. Best song - You sent me flying 1.5 / 5

Overly florid voice stylings. It's not for me.

I enjoy the instrumentals and style. Even though I respect her, Amy's vocals are enjoyable at first but get irritating after a couple of songs.

Great voice, not the content matter that I want to listen to as an 18 yr old guy

Probably won't listen again. Didn't do much for me

En mä nyt ihan hiffaa miks tää on listalla. Jos kysees olis back to black niin varmaan joo. Tää jäi vähän kädenlämpöseksi. 2/5

Mietin tätä kuunnellessa, miksi toksiset lainit häiritsee enemmän laulettuna kuin räpättynä. Kai sanoille tulee laulaen suurempi painoarvo. No eipä tämä ole musiikillisestikaan ihan mun juttu.

Alternative title: I Heart Misogyny and Toxic Masculinity

I’m not super impressed by themes here. Her voice is distinct, for sure. Favorite is probably (There Is) No Greater Love.

Dropped halfway. Fine voice, but not my thing.

She has a unique voice, but this album is dull as dishwater. An hour of mid-90s “smooth jazz” level beige music, her lyrics are largely unintelligible on a first listen because her voice just drones on and on and on without a single hook worth a damn on the whole album, and overall it sounds like something you would hear playing in a Starbucks in the oughts and never wonder to yourself “how can I hear much more of this?”

bad length, instruments are just there to showcase her weird voice, every song is exactly the same. that being said, it is music which warrants a 2 for this list.

No Greater Love is beautiful. And her voice is incredible throughout Just not really into it

I own Back to Black on vinyl and used to play it a lot as background music. I can't say I have ever put Amy Winehouse on to listen with headphones before, or payed much attention to her lyrics. I also really didn't know this album at all before this listening. I think Amy was amazing, but I did not enjoy the experience of listening to this album. Her talent and potential is clear, but overall compared to Back to Black, Frank is nothing to write home about. It's got breakthrough album written all over it - but that doesn't implicitly qualify it as a classic in my opinion. The songwriting does seem to mature as the album goes on. The lyrics in general are super of their time and made me feel very uncomfortable to listen to at points. While it's definitely cool the way that Amy took this genre of music right into the mainstream, pairing it with the sort of themes that rappers and popstars sing about, the blatant homo and transphobia, misogyny and the like is galling. Overall: not for me, I won't be returning to this album.

Amy winehouse. A fitting name for someone who wines on most songs. It would be a nightmare dating her as you get trashed in all her lyrics. Nice voice, great beats, but her personality makes me flaccid. Obviously Frank Sinatra inspired. She over sings a little bit in the same way she over drinks. In “Fuck me Pumps” at least she takes a break shitting on men to take a stab at Miami club bimbos. So far that’s the best one. “I heard love is blind” okay she’s insane. “Amy Amy Amy” was pretty good. You can tell she’s drunk at a bar for that one. Damn she shits on her brother. At least she finished with “Mr Magic” a non-complaining song. Overall decent music but I don’t want any of that poisonous personality so I won’t listen to this album again. I would like to hear a better album from her. She’s got (had) potential. 4/10

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. "Fuck me pumps" was my favorite. Another need for a 2.5 start rating.

to be fair, I've never really liked her stuff. Too whiny sounding, to voice focused. Not my cup of tea. Good production though.

I was actually expecting to enjoy this more. Maybe Black on Black will be that. I guess I was expecting more... Jazz? Seemed to be a lot more pop/soul than I really expected. Oh well. Also surprised this came out in 2003? I would have guessed later 00's. She has a line about texting and I thought damn did people even do that in 2003? Anyway - I expect her other album to be on this list so I'll reserve total judgement of her music for then.

I dont understand why so much weird junk is on this list.

I didn't like the album cover, beside that i never listen to it, obviously i listen to her classic on back to black but that all, i also know her tragic story and her legendary voice. The music style is funk, jazz, R'nB and Soul, all kind of music that i don'tg listen very much so i can harldy judge the quality of the alubm. Also i listen to the album in spotify, but i don't find the full album, just remix and all so i'm not sure i really listen to the real thing. Anyway ig for a Soul or Rn'b fan this is some real good music, i'm personaly not attracted by that.

Not for me, I'm afraid. Yeah, she has buckets of talent, but I just don't like the music. A 2.

I disagree she was a good singer. She just want that special.

Not for me.

I can't say I've ever knowingly listened to Amy Winehouse. Kinda like it.

more like Amy Middowntempo !

4/10 good production voice is hit or miss the lyrics💀

Let's just say she grew a lot by Back to Black.

Can't do Amy Winehouse. Crap.

I found all parts of this album less interesting then Back to Black. Still has a great voice but I didn't care about any of these songs.

she’s got a cool voice but the record seems kind of fake, it’s a shame what happened to her, i hope she’s at peace

I can certainly appreciate her talent. But this kind of music does nothing for me.

Amy had an amazing voice and songwriting talent, and I liked her second album, but this one was a genre issue for me - scat-style singing just gets on my nerves.

Top artiest.

Never listened to this before, or her other album, although obviously I know the name and the story. So, interesting... I'm conflicted. I like the damned style of much of it - the beat that hits you on Stronger Than Me, for example, is really powerful. And there's lots going on here. I particularly enjoyed the bossa nova notes and there's lots to like. And she can sing - No Greater Love is a triumph and I really liked that. But I think I just don't like her voice enough to listen to this as an album again. She can hold a note; she can sing; she can put together a tune - although the lyrics largely passed me by. But I just can't get behind the voice. It makes it difficult to listen to a whole damned album. Two, maybe three tunes in a row is enough. I know I'm probably wrong, but I just don't like it enough. Sorry.

I'm not sure if Amy Winehouse's second album is included on this list, but I'm assuming it is because it was a bigger record. I don't know that both of her records deserve to be on this list - and this one didn't seem as impressive as Back to Black.

I was never a fan of Amy simply because I’m not a fan of this type of music

Not sure why this record is on the list. Amy Winehouse herself kind of disowned the record. Yes she has a voice, and yes she would record a classic in Back to Black but this is a patchy affair at best.

Didn’t feel it. Too jazzy

I thought, this being Amy Winehouse, that I’d recognise some tracks here. Surprisingly, I don’t recognise a single track name. I was never the biggest Amy Winehouse fan, but during her time I was pretty solely listening to punk so it wasn’t really my scene. I’m happy to say my horizons have broadened since then, so let’s listen to this for the first time today! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Amy Amy Amy There is no denying the talented vocals and the interesting jazz-pop orchestration of the music. It’s unusual for the genre to make waves in these modern days, but Amy seemed to change all of that. However, whereas Back To Black has many recognisable songs, her debut album doesn’t really have that. The lyrics here are pretty horrible at times - the opening track has her calling a guy “gay” and a “ladyboy” because he gets emotional and needs some comfort. It’s hard to see how people heard this and thought, “She’s gonna be big.” Musically, this is decent. Lyrically, it is trash and really quite horrible. These themes, along with F*** Me Pumps, really make it seem like she saw herself as “not like the other girls” and it all comes across as horribly cringy. Thankfully, Back To Black was a lot better than this.

What a great singer, what dumb lyrics.

I wanted to write something a little mean, but then I remembered that Back to Black is actually a lot more interesting

Great voice, but weirdly boring album. Definitely missing the Mark Ronson production

good voice, too jazzy and smokey backing, did not like it

Not for me

The Amy Winehouse album nobody listens to. It has some half times but is mostly unremarkable

not really

Really boring production. It’s a shame I didn’t like this more because Winehouse has a great voice and is a decent lyricist.

Third background cd for a polite dinner party.

The production and composition was very appealing. Sounded like old a jazz album with the warm fuzz of vinyl crackling in the background. The lyrical themes, however, were not appealing and made me wonder why Amy was so popular aside from her stark honesty.

Winst.

There's a big difference between somebody who knows what notes to sing, and can hit the correct notes, and somebody who can SING the music. There's no passion in her voice, there's no rich quality to her singing, she's just singing what is put in front of her. I can't believe that everybody hypes her the way they do. She gets an extra star because her voice isn't terrible and because the music is not bad.

I can hear she has an amazing voice. Not for me.

I missed the Amy Winehouse bus when it was originally leaving the station. I'm okay to have let it pass me by despite her amazing voice. While I recognize that talent, I'm not particularly into the lyrical content or the music and arrangements.

I get why others would like it, I myself do not. She was talented enough but the songs just don't do anything for me. The lyrics are pretty dreadful in my opinion.

I don’t like the production, which is dull to near soporific, but her voice and lyrics are occasionally fantastic, and distinctive: unmistakeable hers. But the music made me drift off.

Winehouse’s Black album is so good that I bought it on vinyl. But this Frank album feels like she is either still honing her craft. Or whacked on on smack and not noticing what a hot mess of tracks she was laying down.

Nope. Not for me. I'll leave it to others to provide the plaudits. I guess this one is a matter of taste so not fair to review. I can sort of appreciate some of the later stuff but not this.

Another artist I was looking forward to experiencing for the first time, although I have heard of her. First few songs caught my attention. Very unique voice. Generally not a fan of the jazz, but some of the songs seemed to touched the R&B sound I usually enjoy. I'm torn on this album. Really enjoyed the introduction, did not dislike the sound, but found nothing that made me want to go back and download. All I can say is was OK. Didn't want to turn off, but nothing I would seek out. I did listen a couple times too. For that, right down the middle. 2.5 Nothing I would download so the score on the board will be 2 Will score a 2. If I found a

Amy had talent, no doubt, but her style isn’t really my cup of tea.

Some of the songs, like "Stronger" and "Fuck me pumps" don't really hold up lyrically today. It's a shame, because Amy is a great performer, but I can't really see myself listening to this very much.

Some great sounds but had some distracting moments that took me out of it.

She has an unique voice, I'll give her that and comparisons to Billie Holiday are inevitable and her talent is undeniable. This is the first time I've ever actually listened to a full album by her, Lord knows I tried, but nothing on this album really grabbed my attention. As a debut album from a 19 year old this is commendable , but it is a bit one dimensional and still needs some fleshing out IMO. Her next album was better.

It definitely showcases her vocal talents, but the songs, and the album as a whole, aren’t terribly strong.

blergh

Pains me to rate Amy so low but this is not good. First couple songs were not bad but then this thing just drags. Production is repetitive and bland, songwriting is nothing to write home about. The only redeeming quality here is Amy’s voice, which is one of the best of the 21st century. Back to Black is WAY better.

To be frank, wank.

Sucks when you're really looking forward to an album and it falls flat. But it really sucks when you're looking forward to an album and you desperately need it to stop after the third song. The indiscriminate use of ups-and-downs, ins-and-outs of her voice (contralto?) drove me bonkers. I assume this was involuntary or she hadn't ever heard a recording of her work. Love AW's voice and singing in VERY SMALL DOSES. My max is really about 3 consecutive songs. I muscled through, but was ready to quit after track 3.

I started off really not into this. I still didn't save much, but the album definitely rebounded for me into and through the back half. Still not really my thing, but I came around to it a bit more than I thought I would have after the first few songs. Standouts: Cherry, In My Bed

She was obviously very talented, and it really shines through the mediocre song writing. Not really for me but I understand why someone would like this album.

This reminded me of Dame Cleo Lane, who was famous for her boop-de-boop-boops, vocal range and scatting. All very well and clever but when you have to hear an hour of it is dull, monotonous and seems interminable. There were moments of wit and levity. An interesting first album, but I can’t say I enjoyed it.

I don't subscribe to the cult of Amy Winehouse. I think it has something to do with not being a total idiot. 2/5.
