Amy displays her amazing voice this whole album. I didn't feel like many songs stood out particularly, but it felt like an intimate hour inside Amy's head. With personal lyrics sung in a way only Amy could, over some jazzy and R&B soundscapes. Bouncing between giving this 3 or 4 stars. relisting making me want to give this 4. Something made me want to jump right back in after finishing it.

Very cool to hear Amy on the brink of greatness and getting her start with this album. Rip.

I have often remarked about how much I appreciate hearing pre-fame albums in this collection, even if I don't love them as much as the "heyday" albums. This felt as wonderful as Back to Black, although it was all new to me. Absolutely glorious, and making me so sad that there isn't more.

This album makes me sad for all the obvious reasons. The wonderful, melodic tunes are tinged with such melancholy… I don’t think Amy’s tragic end is entirely responsible for that. Was nice to sit back and have a toast to such a phenomenal talent with a tear in my eye, even if it was a little more depressing than her later album.

Did Back to Black make this a "must listen to album"? She's got a great and unique style, but it's one dimensional. It's good, but I'm not sure that I needed something that I can get at a local blues bar.

Clean, easy to enjoy soulful jazz lounge vibe. Amy's got a great emotive voice. The songs didn't feel like there was much to distinguish them apart and nothing particularly catchy here, but overall it was fine.

First track was great. Rest of the album was hit or miss with several stylistic changes that did not work.

Amy had an amazing voice and songwriting talent, and I liked her second album, but this one was a genre issue for me - scat-style singing just gets on my nerves.

What an artist. Wish she was still with us today. Great soulful and emotional voice. This is an underrated album of hers. It leans more into the hip-hop/r&b sphere than her vintage soul inspired "Back to Black" album. Very appropriate for the time it was released. I also hear a lot of jazz influence on here. Shout out to the production as well. Very nice.

It’s a good debut but absolutely pales into comparison to what she was able to do later

Never really understood what the big deal was with Winehouse. She became a celebrity who often appeared in tabloids and "entertainment news", due to her off stage addictions and indulgences, but really what was the fascination? The story of a talented singer, lost in a sea of drugs and booze isn't an uncommon tale, but somehow she had the look and tragic story. She was an above average jazz singer who had a good voice that was years beyond her age with a persona as a diva from beginning to an end that came way too soon. The songs are okay, her music brought the jazz genre into to the pop mainstream and she was an amazing performer. I still think she was a tad overrated and not as essential as we might think.

This was more jazzy than I expected.

Sultry and sexy and sassy. Great album.

She has an amazing voice and her songwriting witticisms are unusual and often special— and yet I just can’t connect to these songs properly. She is such a personality that it gets in the way. Like Taylor Swift, she makes no room for anyone else in her stories, and for me that’s ok for a while, then ultimately makes me tired— it’s like having to pay attention to someone for too long.

Heard before: no I'm really surprised I've never heard these tracks... and I thought I was so sure about Amy Winehouse. I guess I had babies during her prime, and that's what happens to the brain of a new dad. Anyway, this is so much more natural, soulful, and relaxed than I expected - more Stax than Motown. I really love the production (esp Salaam Remi, another guy who I need to know better) - neo-soul, jazzy cabaret, quiet storm R&B, and trip-hoppy beats seamlessly weave in and out. But her singing and her songs are the real stars - hilarious and heartbreaking, a mix of confessions and wry humor. And despite lyrics that can be raw and in your face, her voice has an underrated softness and subtlety. Even with all this in the blender, it never feels forced or overworked; it's so easy, almost casual - the hardest thing to do. NOW I'm sad about her loss. Man... AW debut and set a template for her short career. Louche and sexy. It holds together well as an album.

Not in my edition of the book! 2003. 4 stars. One of the best debut albums ever made, and a perfect commentary on the early Millennium ladette culture. Great tunes, sharp lyrics, and THAT voice. What's not to like?

Never listened to this before, or her other album, although obviously I know the name and the story. So, interesting... I'm conflicted. I like the damned style of much of it - the beat that hits you on Stronger Than Me, for example, is really powerful. And there's lots going on here. I particularly enjoyed the bossa nova notes and there's lots to like. And she can sing - No Greater Love is a triumph and I really liked that. But I think I just don't like her voice enough to listen to this as an album again. She can hold a note; she can sing; she can put together a tune - although the lyrics largely passed me by. But I just can't get behind the voice. It makes it difficult to listen to a whole damned album. Two, maybe three tunes in a row is enough. I know I'm probably wrong, but I just don't like it enough. Sorry.

It starts with a paean to gender hierarchy and partrarchy Stronger Than me where she chides a weaker man who she demeans as gay and a ladyboy. I do think that I’d she’d live she would see this differently. Throughout the album there does seem to be internalized misogyny, most obviously on Fuck Me Pumps where she ruthlessly demeans gold diggers. I think there’s a lot of obvious pain and self loathing here. I think although there are several nods to hip hop and r & b, this is essentially a conservative album pulled nearly directly from the American Songbook. The twist is in the direct, personal, sexual, and emotional rawness in the lyrics. The music itself is indebted to figures of the past such as Billie holiday and Sarah Vaughn. Her delivery is direct and authentic. Technique never gets in the way. She was obviously a very great vocal talent. It would have been interesting to see her develop. Alas.

I'm not sure if Amy Winehouse's second album is included on this list, but I'm assuming it is because it was a bigger record. I don't know that both of her records deserve to be on this list - and this one didn't seem as impressive as Back to Black.

2.8 - I’ll stick to “Back to Black.” This lightweight neo-soul does nothing for me. I feel like I’m listening to Macy Gray with a dash of gratuitous cursing.

Amy's voice was very good and lyrically it's a strong debut album considering she was barely an adult when she made it. But musically the album was much weaker compared to Back to Black and the whole album isn't as structured and well thought out as the following-up.

While I don't like this nearly as much as Back to Black, I found this album super intriguing even though I wasn't super into it musically. It sounds like an artist trying to find the best fit for their talents by experimenting with several styles. Sometimes the soul sound Amy's most known for come through, but there's also some decent R&B, jazz and even hip-hop here.

Pretty good, but I like the other one better. This felt a little overlong by the end for me. 3.25/5

I thought, this being Amy Winehouse, that I’d recognise some tracks here. Surprisingly, I don’t recognise a single track name. I was never the biggest Amy Winehouse fan, but during her time I was pretty solely listening to punk so it wasn’t really my scene. I’m happy to say my horizons have broadened since then, so let’s listen to this for the first time today! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Amy Amy Amy There is no denying the talented vocals and the interesting jazz-pop orchestration of the music. It’s unusual for the genre to make waves in these modern days, but Amy seemed to change all of that. However, whereas Back To Black has many recognisable songs, her debut album doesn’t really have that. The lyrics here are pretty horrible at times - the opening track has her calling a guy “gay” and a “ladyboy” because he gets emotional and needs some comfort. It’s hard to see how people heard this and thought, “She’s gonna be big.” Musically, this is decent. Lyrically, it is trash and really quite horrible. These themes, along with F*** Me Pumps, really make it seem like she saw herself as “not like the other girls” and it all comes across as horribly cringy. Thankfully, Back To Black was a lot better than this.

Amazing album. Her voice is just so powerful on this. Loved the instrumentals on this as well. All round a great experience.

Not my favorite by her but it’s hard not to love that voice

i have to believe that as amy winehouse's debut, frank gets overlooked since her following album absolutely blew up the world in 2006. as someone who isn't a huge winehouse fan (but can appreciate her music), i was surprised how solid this album was. it's a shame frank didn't get as much attention in the US initially. amy's wheelhouse is in jazz, but gosh it's such a cool combination, with soul and r&b and hip hop. for a relatively short career, amy tells us exactly who she is in "fuck me pumps," and i love the strength in coming out of the gate with a song like that. while she's not the sole songwriter on this album, i found myself amazed at the power of the lyrics.

I'm not a very big fan of jazz, and my reviews on this project thus far pretty much reflect that. It's just not typically my thing. But man, there is something about Amy Winehouse. She is such a strong vocalist. Despite its improvisational roots, jazz has the tendency to seem so pristine. But beyond just her appearance, Amy was able to bring a little bit of a messy, gritty, raw, unfiltered sound and tone to what is otherwise kind of regarded these days as a "classy" genre. This was a strong debut album during a time when jazz was definitely not the focal point of music. And while this album was mostly setting a stage for the album and the subsequent sensation to come, there is still a clear demonstration here of standout jazz ability in the 2000s.

A laborious record overall. The production is clean, dense and has just about all the qualities needed to make an \"easy listening\" album. However, the core problem is that it is difficult to get through because of the whingy, cursive, and nasal vocal performances. The project length also does not help matters because there is not enough lyrical variety to warrant an hour's runtime. The songs end up blurring into one monotonous moan. Score: 29/100

Sorry...she was 19 when she recorded this? 19?! Good God. Talk about a jazz vocal prodigy. This is the work of a singer who's honed their craft after 20-30 years. The pure talent here is almost distracting from the record as a whole. I think the songs are just fine. I'd happily put these on at a BBQ, or just for a chill night of drinks and hanging. Nothing in particular about the musical structure pops out here, and it's pretty safe production wise. But that's the only reason I don't give 5 stars here.

Winehouse was a sultry, soulful powerhouse from the very start, even though the music accompanying her vocal debut leaves much to be desired.

I would say this isn’t really my ‘kind’ of music - like the snappy early 2000s boy-band drum-machine shuffle isn’t my bag, but these are some rad lyrics and really quite incredible singing compare to the improv singing we heard on the Destiny’s Child record Survivor… She is SO GODDAMN SURE of every move A good listen and sad to think of where she might have taken this talent with a few more albums.

I listened to this a couple times in succession to make sure I wasn't missing something here. There's potential here that was later realised, but this album isn't special in the same way that "Back To Black" is. There are some solid tracks though; "Take The Box" is probably one of the best.

Most of the time, when I’m looking for a retrograde album to illustrate how much gender politics have evolved in music over the last few years, I think of The Rolling Stones or Aerosmith. I do not think of Amy Winehouse. And yet, in this album’s opening song “Stronger than Me” we have an ear-grabbing reinforcement of terrible gender stereotypes. Winehouse tells her man that he’s 7 years older than her so should be strong, but he’s overly emotional and she has to comfort him so much, she wonders if he might be gay? It’s a jarring note on an album which dives headfirst into thorny relationships with relish (“Fuck Me Pumps” is a takedown of material women, “I Heard Love Is Blind” takes a defensive stance after a one-night affair). “Frank” launched Winehouse’s career and brought her miraculous voice into public consciousness, but it’s a million miles from the refined songwriting she’d display just a few years later on “Back to Black”. The music is flighty and restless, sometimes settling in a comfortable place: rooted in jazz-pop, flirting with soul, bossa-nova (“Know You Now”), sampled hip-hop beats (“In My Bed”, “What Is It About Men”). It’s a little scattered, sometimes snoozy, and definitely overlong: at various points, “Frank” feels a bit confused over its identity. There are a couple of standouts, though: “October Song” is a crisp and wistful ode to Eva Cassidy, and the cover of the jazz standard “There Is No Greater Love” is a real breath of fresh, dignified air. “Amy, Amy, Amy” is a fun, rickety mine-cart ride into self destruction. While Winehouse’s songwriting was still under development here, her voice emerges fully formed on “Frank” (at just 19 years old!) Thankfully, her vocals are miraculous enough to steal the attention from any questionable content: it’s honey, whiskey and poison. She has stunning depth, control and character which is utilised across every track. If nothing else will sell you on her music, the voice surely will.

Raunchy and odd in everything but equal parts, vocal brute force carries the record while lyrical rhetoric fails. Winehouse is magnetic and not always in attracting mode. Frank's an ageless debut; It's hard to pick songs as highlights, but it's far from one note. One soul behind it, though, that's sure.

Her voice in just unreal

The production and composition was very appealing. Sounded like old a jazz album with the warm fuzz of vinyl crackling in the background. The lyrical themes, however, were not appealing and made me wonder why Amy was so popular aside from her stark honesty.

Opens on Stronger Than Me, which features a jazz-infused hip-hop beat and Amy's powerful vocals crooning over top about a lover's shortcomings. You Sent Me Flying taps into a fitting R&B beat for the period. Nothing particularly wrong with it, just not my cup of tea. This segues (for some reason) directly into Cherry, which features a Spanish-influenced acoustic guitar pluck. The instrumental on Fuck Me Pumps reminds me a lot of another song, but I cannot place it. Love the instrumental backing, but I'm not really loving her vocals here; just don't do a lot for me. In My Bed is a standout for the beat. Love the dusty hip-hop shuffle matched with flute. Her vocals are fine, but really it is the backing production for me. Lots of soul on this record, and clearly Amy had pipes. That said, I found this to be a bit tiresome to listen to and lost focus about midway through. The instrumentals were varied in both style and quality. Overall impression is this is just fine: 3 / 5.

Stronger Than Me has aged terribly, lyrics wise. This sounds as I expected. Bit too much bitching at other people in the lyrics for my taste but was fairly enjoyable overall. I liked the song about her producer (or whoever) turning her down.

Such a raw debut album. Whereas her second album had more bangers. This one was softer and more subtle. The modern jazz was beautiful and so was her singing, as always. The songwriting could be a little clunky in places, but were good for the most part. Enjoyed it. 4/5

Excellent voice and style from a talent cut short. Not every song is a winner, but it was still a cool listen with lots of good tracks, and a few great ones.

Ik heb niet veel met het genre (= Frank Sinatra met eierstokken en borderline) maar ik heb nog minder met Amy's krasserige heksenstem. Zeker op maandagochtend voel ik mezelf met elke zin die ze uitkrast verder eroderen. Op de spaarzame momenten waarop ze even niet zingt of rustig aan doet bevalt de muziek beter dan verwacht. Ik ga dan ook 2 sterren uitdelen, ondanks dat het voor mij best een uitdaging is om dit niet af te zetten. Ik moet zeggen dat het me meevalt dat 'Valerie' niet op één van haar twee eigen albums staat. Ik dacht altijd dat die op Back in Black stond, maar dat kutnummer staat blijkbaar op een Mark Ronson album en die staat niet in deze lijst. Winst.

She made good songs

Damn, Amy read some poor bitch to filth in that fuck me pumps song! Didn’t recognize any of these songs, and am not a regular Winehouse listener generally, but I do appreciate her uniquely acerbic lyricism and soulful voice. She had the guts to express herself however she wanted through her music and has a Joplinesque quality to her singing, personality, and lifestyle that made her highly marketable and sought after. She may have been a deeply tortured soul in life, but in music she is fierce and fabulous.

Her voice is amazing. And I really enjoy some of these arrangements and chord voicings. But for whatever reason, when you put it all together, it’s just kind of meh for me.

Jazz, R&B. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Qué bien cantaba, pobrecica .... El álbum, correcto, pero no me ha entusiasmado.

ummmm…. this is a weird choice (once again). this is appropriative, all over the place, and sometimes out of key. i dont understand this. why not pick the polished final album? thebone before she died? the one that straddles pop, rnb, n jazz in a fun and dumb pop way? like, that one is the one. anyway, bloated, long, not good.

There's a big difference between somebody who knows what notes to sing, and can hit the correct notes, and somebody who can SING the music. There's no passion in her voice, there's no rich quality to her singing, she's just singing what is put in front of her. I can't believe that everybody hypes her the way they do. She gets an extra star because her voice isn't terrible and because the music is not bad.

It's OK. I prefer Back to Black over this though. Still it's a decent listen. Fuck Me Pumps is a standout.

Hard to compete with her more famous Back to Black, but even at this point in her career Winehouse’s vocals are excellent.

I missed the Amy Winehouse bus when it was originally leaving the station. I'm okay to have let it pass me by despite her amazing voice. While I recognize that talent, I'm not particularly into the lyrical content or the music and arrangements.

Very jazzy and I like her lighter tone of voice on this album.

I appreciated the blues/R&B/jazz elements and I always thought that style of music was being forgotten to time (as in if it wasn't "in" or popular anymore). It was also refreshing to hear more about a female's perspective on different facets of life as opposed to my usual male-dominated rock music .

This album is great, very nearly a 5 for me and I can't quite put my finger on why not.

I understand the hype around Amy Winehouse after this album. It's a great album, and listening to it early on a Sunday morning while making breakfast and coffee is a home run time to listen. This felt like a good R&B album with some jazz and soul thrown it; great combo. It didn't feel like this had highs and lows, it was consistently great from start to finish. Definitely reaching for more Amy after this.

Amy was such a badass RIP. This album sounds to me like a very unique style of rap that I've never heard before. I really liked the songwriting and lyrics. Glad I listened to the YouTube version rather than the "US Clean" version on Spotify mainly for Fuck Me Pumps I have never really listened to her but definitely will be now.

I bet Ev was wishing she was still doing this. F**k Me Pumps is a banger. Bassline in "In My Bed" slaps. Great vocals and very chill instrumentals. Great album overall.

I liked it but it made me sad

awe :( Amy. There's something so sad about her death and hits me harder knowing addiction. She left us a lot of gold. And she was so pretty! What an amazing artist! Her style is beautiful. Old and jazzy and modern all in one. Lovin this album.

What a voice. I never got into her while she was alive, but after her death I started exploring her discography and wow I really wish I'd appreciated her more. Such a fun, eclectic mix of styles.

I get why others would like it, I myself do not. She was talented enough but the songs just don't do anything for me. The lyrics are pretty dreadful in my opinion.

Not bad, but it sounds a little dated. I enjoyed Back To Black more.

Highlights: "You Sent Me Flying" Winehouse is very up front about her neo-soul influences, which is more than I can say for all the people who've been praising her for twenty years when I'm only discovering this now. She has good musical ideas in homage to those influences, backed up by a ton of vocal talent. Main drawback might be the constant riffing and very wordy lyrics that can make it seem unfocused. The content sours it too. When her candor is supposed to be her selling point, it doesn't exactly scream girl power or strength and independence to open by calling your boyfriend gay because you wish he was more controlling, or to gloat over the failure of other women in "Fuck Me Pumps". But the album is musically a worthy entry for her to the tradition.

Cat: she’s great - I do feel like this album sounds like 90s R&B and she hasn’t found her own distinctive sound yet. Still great story telling and a loungey feel which I love. AJ: band is crazy. Just rock solid. I can’t help but judge her for her demons. She’s great, but what could’ve been. If someone had tried to help her sooner. Such a talent. Such a shame.

Wonderful! Such a great insight to this complex and talented woman. I started to lose track a bit near the end but it was still a great album.

I don’t like the production, which is dull to near soporific, but her voice and lyrics are occasionally fantastic, and distinctive: unmistakeable hers. But the music made me drift off.

More Brit bias evident here. Who cares about this trash? No tunes and an irritating voice, try-hard wannabe '60s lounge singer doomed to sound like a bad parody. I put on Neil Young's "Trans" as a palate cleanser after enduring this, a flawed flash of originality that has infinitely greater claim to be on this list. Ho hum

I really like the instrumental palette here, the dark bossa nova vibe is cool and the bass on “Stronger than me” is crazy. Lyrics definitely stand out on “I heard love is blind.” Comes across as very honest. In my Bed is an obvious banger, the instrumental really stands out here. All the songs were a vibe. No huge standouts but it was consistently good especially the back half from In My Bed on. Realizing now my favorite might have been a bonus track cuz it’s after outro but the harmonies on brother were really cool. 👍: I’m my bed, take the box, brother

The album was good ngl but it didn’t really click with me right off the bat. I did like the vocals of course and some of the lyrics were really interesting and clever

That opening track has been a favorite of mine for a while. On track 3 now and man she is good but the production is really what’s grabbing me. These all create such a specific upbeat energy It’s a bummer then Winehouse wasn’t a fan of this album. But that tracks with the mistreatment she faced by practically everyone in her life. Amy winehouse is a top tier vocalist, and while I’m not sure this album showed it off to its full potential, it still showcased it well. These songs were all super smooth, that’s the feel she was going for, no doubt. I wanted a little more excitement though, maybe 2-3 songs to REALLY show off her voice and the power it possesses. I don’t feel like I got that. Seemed like she was trying to match the smooth jazzy vibe of the instrumentals with her vocals. Album was super consistent though. In my bed was kind of the only thing that strayed from the norm and it was cool, sounded like something from a totally different genre. MMM kinda hard cuz I feel like this is an album not carried by its melodies. 3 but a really high 3. Highs just weren’t high enough for me. My Amy Winehouse favorite album, no question about it. I love these songs because they bring back memories of hard days I was able to overcome and also because I love this Amy, the one before all the excess, the one before turning into Billie Holiday, singing playfully her songs. This is one of the albums I play when I need to cheer me up.

I'd never been interested in listening to Amy Winehouse until this came up. I find it interesting that she was a fairly average sounding lounge singer, but still attained such popularity in the time. I think what stands out in this album is the trip hop elements. Incorporating breakbeats, a hip hop trap kit and lo-fi keys really amplifies it into something unique.

This is the second Amy Winehouse album I have gotten on this list, and the first one blew me away. I had no idea what kind of artist of musician she was. This album is also great, it's heavy, the production is killer, and it's cool to hear an earlier output after being floored by her second album. Great listen all around.

Amy is goed. Maar een heel album met de nasale stem van Amy, dat is toch te veel Amy. Je geeft toch sterren aan het hele album...Ook mis ik de bekende uitschieters van haar op dit album. Amy weet wel heel goed meer klassieke stijlen met modernere (pop)klanken te mengen. Dat levert haar een de derde ster op.

Amy is een beetje gehyped a la Caro Emerald. Gelukkig zit het muzikaal wel iets beter in elkaar. Ze was op dit album waarschijnlijk nog iets teveel haar eigen oude helden aan het eren, want het klinkt een beetje copycat. Het kan niet tippen aan Back to Black, waar ze veel meer laat zien wat ze in haar mars had, en dat we neem ik aan nog krijgen in deze lijst. Althans, dat mag ik hopen, maar je weet het nooit - kuch, mezzanine, kuch!

Anytime I've heard Amy Winehouse -- a song of hers, a video or audio recording of a performance, etc. -- I'm always in awe of her voice and her performing talent. Something about her is just so compelling to my ear, and it is great to hear this album (her debut album) all the way through for my first time. Wow. Absolutely brilliant. I need to listen to more of her albums.

Absolute banger of an album. The guitars are gorgeous. Some of the tracks in the last third are a bit weaker but this is an amazing album.

Never in a thousand years would I think I would give this album a 5/5, but I liked it that much. Even listened through a second time. Every song is good.

Indulgent and spread a little thin, but I like the way that this is a bit more trip-hop-pop than her later, more big-band works, and I admire the honesty of her lyrics.

Wonderful. Had never listened to the full album. What a tragedy. So much talent.

Half decent, I've never heard any of these ones. I feel similar as I did for the album tracks on Back to Black. Consistently good but nothing stands out really. I enjoyed the jazzy, easy listening brazilian style backing to many of the tracks. I guess another reference to Sinatra and his albums with Tom Jobim. And some are simply Billie Holiday. It works well. Too long though, 3 or 4 tracks I wouldn't bother with at all.

Pretty fun to listen to. Nothing really special.

Best Song: In My Bed. Something about that chorus just scratched some deep itch. Groovy, sultry, with busy enough background instrumentals that Amy doesn't feel the need to over-sing. Worst Song: Amy Amy Amy. Too slow, too waltz-y. Overall: This is a difficult album to appreciate, because Amy Winehouse's singing style was so (poorly) imitated in the years following her success, and the genre was so saturated with this kind of indulgent "over"-singing, that going back to listen to this feels like revisiting Patient 0. As though the more modern imitators have put a blemish on the whole style. Regardless, her singing ability and individuality shine through, and the album is still highly listenable.

I've never been a fan of Amy though I like her popular tracks. I did enjoy this though I'm not sure I'll be coming back to it to relisten

Winehouse’s Black album is so good that I bought it on vinyl. But this Frank album feels like she is either still honing her craft. Or whacked on on smack and not noticing what a hot mess of tracks she was laying down.

I would have never listened to this album if not for this site. Really enjoyed. Incredible voice - shame it ended far too soon.

I’ve never listened to this before, my experience of Amy Winehouse is limited to her chart success and her second album. Whilst this isn’t exactly mainstream Amy Winehouse, it is a pure version of her voice, I personally think that the second album in comparison shows her declined with drink and drugs Far more. Whilst she was alive and constantly in the news for her drink and drug antics, she wasn’t an artist that I was particularly keen upon, having listened to her retrospectively, I do like her voice, and had she managed to clean herself up, I’m convinced that She would’ve had massive success

Ughhhhh just fucking insanely great and amazing. I used to see Amy Winehouse in her final years in a pub in Kentish Town when I was doing uni drinking and avoiding revision for vet school exams haha. Her story really touched me and I always really appreciated her music even while she was alive but maybe even more so since she passed. I have a lot of time for this kind of jazzy version of intense story-telling. Her lyrics are genius and the tunes she wrote are unbelievably catchy. I always love listening around the hits to some of her lesser known songs. This album certainly helped me deal with some tough things like grief and heartbreak at certain points in my life and I think it's incredible.

A gorgeous album in many ways, she has such a wonderful voice and the music is so expressive and beautiful. I did find it a bit dated at points though, like 'fuck me pumps' was so judgemental!

Well it was a bloody 5 star before I even start. One of my favourite albums of all time - I don't know where to start! I just think it is a beautifully crafted album where you get a real sense of what Amy's life was like in London at the time. Her relationships, her nights out (taking the piss out of certain girls - but in a fond way! (Fuck me pumps))), her love for writing music on her guitar (Cherry), falling in love with crap men (Help Yourself) and her messy attitude to relationships (I Heard Love Is Blind). So many of the songs are so funny and include punchlines, like I heard love in blind. I love how to the point and unafraid she was to talk about certain shortcomings in her songs - FRANK as such. Other than knowing the obvious Amy Winehouse songs, it was Help Yourself that got into her properly. Someone I met travelling (Malaysia at the time I believe) told me how pure and beautiful she thought that song was - I just how on the nose it was. I listened and totally agreed - now my most favourite song. I've loved all the documentaries about Amy Winehouse and what I've learned about her song writing - like how she, before the music, is a poet and lyricist and that is SO the strength of these songs. But her love of jazz means these songs are musically complex and surprising but pleasing. Just big big love for this - a joy to write a review and sing along to EVERY WORD. I became a fan of Amy Winehouse she died, it was odd to go through the heartbreak of her death well after she actually died. I'm so struck by her talent and if only she'd grown older to write more music, and obviously enjoyed her life beyond 27. Her music was so wise and mature, knowing some of these songs were written as a teen! 5 bloody stars and I rarely give these

Raw, unfiltered, telling her truths. The mix of latin, reggae and jazz influence was unexpected. Defining that new age of RnB. What is it about men is unreal.

Another artist I was looking forward to experiencing for the first time, although I have heard of her. First few songs caught my attention. Very unique voice. Generally not a fan of the jazz, but some of the songs seemed to touched the R&B sound I usually enjoy. I'm torn on this album. Really enjoyed the introduction, did not dislike the sound, but found nothing that made me want to go back and download. All I can say is was OK. Didn't want to turn off, but nothing I would seek out. I did listen a couple times too. I have been very interested in Amy Winehouse because She's always been spoken so so highly of. She also has her biopic AMY out which has her in the zeitgeist again. I know Frank isn't normally the go-to Amy Winehouse album but this was still a really a great listen! I do quite like her voice. She truly uses it as an instrument which not every singer does. Frank pushes it into more Jazzy territory than I thought it would and honestly those are my favorite parts of the album. I'm very excited to hear Back to Black when it inevitably appears on this list. 4

3 As someone not familiar with anything of Amy’s that isn’t on Back to Black, I liked this. It gave me the impression of listening to her perform at a dimly lit, smoke-filled night club… or maybe a cafe. Considering the album is named after Sinatra, I think that was the vibe she was going for (the night club one obviously… though I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t entertained by the thought of hearing My Way at a Coffee Bean). Anyway, that’s about all this album has going for it - there really aren’t a ton of specific remarkable moments along the way. I enjoyed the songs Fuck Me Pumps, What is it About Men, and Amy Amy Amy a little bit more than the others, but to say they’re standouts feels a bit like overpraise. An instance of an album where I think I appreciated the atmosphere it provided more than the actual songs. It’s fine enough, though I think I can see why her follow-up is more acclaimed.

Before she was Back in Black she introduced us to Frank. That seems to be the appropriate word…Frank. An uncompromising and classic sound seems at times throwback and others wholly what was missing for the time. A WONDERFUL record. The world could’ve used more Amy Winehouse.

Let me be frank, this album is pretty good. I gave "Back to Black" a 2/5 back in January 2022 because my goals are far beyond the mortal understanding. I now consider that album to be a 4/5 and formally apologize for my sins. This one is weaker than that one. It really feels like the beta version. The performances are a bit blinder and the lyrics.. well actually, I didn't mind the lyrics that much. Three outta five.

In My Bed the standout on first listen? Sounds solid, also just like everything that came after it 'It's just a straight jazz-hip hop crossover' - Amy Compare w/ SZA/ 'fucked up' & self-destructive/ heart-on-sleeve pop/ indie artists solid 3/5

This came out when I was a teenager, so I totally missed it, and then I was out of the country when Back to Black came out, so I totally missed the Amy Winehouse boat altogether. I get it now.

Obvious tinge of sadness aside, one gets the feeling she had at least 8 more great albums in her. Just an incredible debut with serious Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone vibes. Some tend to focus on the sadness of what should have been, but we should instead appreciate the few moments she left for everyone to enjoy. My hunch is future generations will discover Amy Winehouse and hold her up with the Ella's and Nina's and even Billie Freaking Holiday.

The next album is better

Some of the songs, like "Stronger" and "Fuck me pumps" don't really hold up lyrically today. It's a shame, because Amy is a great performer, but I can't really see myself listening to this very much.

There's no denying the absolute talent that was Amy Winehouse. With a very good debut record, she had a lot of things going for her. Unfortunately the world didn't get to see Amy Winehouse that much longer as she passed away. This album is an incredible display of her abilities as a vocalist. While the lyrics are too obvious and could've used some more depth, the songs still are quite enjoyable. Favorite lyrics: - Wish I could say it breaks my heart. Like you did in the beginning. It's not that we grew apart. A nightingale no longer singin'. - Emulate all the shit my mother hates. I can't help but demonstrate my Freudian fate. I've actively avoided Amy Winehouse's music for nearly twenty years (I think I just hate "Rehab"? Or maybe she reminds me of someone that I don't like? I'm not entirely sure to be honest), so this was my first experience with one of her albums. I really enjoyed listening to this. Amy's vocals are great, and while the songwriting might be 'juvenile' in a topical sense, I thought that the tracks felt really cohesive. "Fuck Me Pumps" might be the first jazz diss track that I've ever heard, and it absolutely ruled. I'm really looking forward to when I get assigned 'Back to Black.'

Not as impressive as Back to Black. However the unique voice with a unique point of view is there. Solid stuff.

Super cool cross between AW’s old school soul sound that she’s most known for and the neo soul/R&B of the early 2000’s. Definitely an easy listening album but the songs are also sophisticated and fun so it’s got some real depth too.

Really enjoyed this one. As someone who honestly has not listened to much Amy Winehouse aside from the hits, I was pretty impressed with the musicianship throughout the album. Solid listen and would revisit it again.
