Fuck Me Pumps mi je bil zanimiv. Ostali so zanimivi in okej, ampak ne bi posegla po tem albumu kar tak.
Fun album. Love her voice and how she made jazz modern. Probably won’t listen again.
Amy Winehouse has a great voice, no doubt. Having heard her legendary followup, Back in Black, listening to Frank is an odd experience. It's a lot less focused, less polished, and less consistent. What old-school soul Winehouse wielded on Back in Black is simply not here. Instead, she opts for neo-soul that flirts with trip hop. These sounds, while well done, are simply not in Winehouse's wheelhouse. It occasionally feels like she is fighting over the instrumentals, losing her dominance that I know her better for. Everything about Frank feels like a solid first attempt. For an artist still finding her sound, I would not hold that against Winehouse. Good work otherwise.
Not my kind!
Dang Amy, you sing so goodly but you bloat so bloatly.
Starts very jazzy. Song 1, stronger than me has an amazing guitar. Sent me flying was lackluster.
Jazzy and soulful. A talented singer lost too soon
I listened to this in high school, and I remember liking it. Amy is witty and hilarious as well as sophisticated and romantic. “Stronger Than Me” is a great intro and feels both of it’s time and something that would be popular today. “Cherry” is the only song I remember and seriously love. Amy Winehouse was a really special and unique pop star — blending 90’s R&B, Blossom Dearie jazz vibes, and Jeff Buckley-esque song lyrics. I’m actually not a huge Amy fan, but I totally understand her appeal and her talent. “Amy Amy Amy” is another fun song that I remember — the whimsical synth-tuba bass line sets itself apart from the rest of the record. So, all this being said, this album is a 3 for me. I like the occasional song, I respect Amy’s style, but I think that she eventually perfected her craft in future records. As a debut, this record revealed an up-and-comer with true potential, and debuts aren’t meant to be perfect anyway. Yes, a solid 3.
Her schtick has been overplayed to the point where it almost sounds like parody. But I did own this when it came out and loved the smokey jazz chanteuse style before the china white, fags and bad boyfriend ruined her talent
The music consisted of mediocre soul-jazz ballads rooted in the past, but with good lyrics. (6/10). FT: Amy Amy/Outro , I Heard Love Is Blind, Moody's Mood for Love/Teo Licks
Amy Winehouse's debut album showcases her explosive voice within a jazz/R&B framework. The lyrical content is bleak, but the music itself is well produced and arranged, and Amy's voice of course, can do anything. Her voice is not as controlled as it is on 'Back to Black,' but is still incredibly powerful. My biggest complaint is that she makes some vocal choices that detract from the song. She over-pronounces certain syllables to sound a certain way, but it doesn't always fit. However, that is a small complaint when faced with her incredible talent.
CD
gud
This is the debut album from English singer, songwriter Amy Winehouse. It was received well by critics and has been certified triple platinum in the UK. The album title can be a reference to Winehouse's singing on this album which is open, honest, and to the point. Or it could be referencing Frank Sinatra - which was an early influence for Amy Winehouse, and her vocal style even sounds similar to his style. This soulful, R&B, and bossa nova jam fest of an album makes for a relaxing and romantic atmosphere. Amy Winehouse was extremely talented and it's a shame she was taken too soon. I'm glad I finally got a chance to listen to her debut album, and I'm looking forward to listening to more songs from her that I may have missed.
Есть парочка композиции, который выделяются музыкально. Но остальное звучит довольно однообразно.
Very Jazzy. Did not expect this.
It's fine, but the problem is that Back to Black is SO much better.
Gillar Amy's röst väldigt mycket. Gillar de jazziga tonerna blandat med moderna beats. Men låtarna i sig är lite tråkiga, det är inget som sticker ut. Lyssnade på kontoret i Gif-Sur-Yvette.
hard to know which album is the right one both are kinda mid though
After a while I did tire of this one a bit. There's no disputing that she has a style that is entirely her own
Not that familiar with this album compared to back in black, for that reason I enjoyed it, and feel it’s maybe a bit underrated. Worth a listen.
\"Fraaaaannnnkkk!\" Pat Butcher, 1998.
Probably should have talked to Frank shouldn't she?
Flashes of brilliance in her debut album. Jazz/Pop, great vocals, some genuinely great lyrics. Her first steps towards greatness and sadness. Best Tracks: Fuck Me Pumps; I Heard Love Is Blind; What Is It About Men
I like "Back to Black" far more. My favorite of the lot here was the more laid back hidden track "Brother."
Amy Winehouse is good at what she does, but it never has ever clicked with me. I think her other album is also a bit better.
Distinctive voice. Undoubted talent. Spawned an army of imitators. Dead before her time. Not for me though
Objectively supremely talented with a distinctive style for the time and a unique voice. A great album title. But it's not for me. Doesn't resonate at all. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Intro / Stronger Than Me Date listened: 30/05/22
Super talented artist. Most of the songs were pretty forgettable though. Still her ability really shines through.
Such a tragic loss of a profoundly talented musician.
Very Billie Holiday in vocal style. Very laid back jazz. Not quite the poptastic songs of the next album, but gently groovy. Back when Amy had no obvious tattoos, looked healthy, attractive and probably wasn’t aware of her influential status. Refreshing.
mellow
Lang niet zo goed als de opvolger, maar hier hoor je de klasse al wel doorkomen.
Een album wat zonder veel poe-ha voorbij gaat.
Een dijk van een stem natuurlijk. Toch raakt het me om de een of andere reden niet echt.
Thought she was really bad when she first started but think she has some real talent and some cool songs now. Close to a 4.
I'm at odds with this record. Amy manages to blend a classic, 50s/60s girl group style vocal with blunt, vulgar, sometimes gaudy lyrics well. There's almost a fun shock when you get to a song like "Fuck Me Pumps". However, the backing instrumentals attempt to do something in the same vein to less success. The background instrumentals attempt to conjure images of those classic numbers, big band, and 90s/00s R&B, but it manages to sound poorly produced and heavily dated. Favorite tracks: "You Sent Me Flying/Cherry", "October Song"
No doubting Amy's vocal talents: one of the greatest. The songs on Frank aren't as good as her next album, though Fuck Me Pumps always makes me smile. Some of the production is inconsistent.
It's a decent album, but not really into her voice or sound. I like her version of Moody's Mood For Love. 3/5
I like Amy. This sounds drunker than the other one.
Amazing voice. Not my kind of music but there are flashes of great.
Det svänger katten.
Wine house not quite up to full power here, and as usual I find it hard to separate the music from how rapidly the full star gestalt would burn out the filament in that bulb.
I don't usually like vocal jazz - but I've always felt Amy Winehouse was a bit different. I enjoyed listening to this - more familiar with her later albums.
I don't know. Not really for me. Her voice doesn't do it for me. The production on some tracks is extra cool but you can find that done better elsewhere I think. Favorite tracks: Stronger Than Me, What is it about Men, Amy Amy Amy, Outro
Entertaining, not the biggest fan of her voice though
First I ever heard of Amy Winehouse was literally news about her dying, so coming late to the party here, as usual. Undeniably excellent voice, though at the end of the day if I’m going for lounge music I’d still probably go for Tom Waits first, just the kind of person I am. GF tells me Back to Black is apparently where her best stuff is, though, so looking forward to that one coming up in the rotation.
surpringly well written concept album that does not include any of her major hits but still puts her amazing voice on display
Lovely voice. Tragic life. So much wasted beauty
Amy Winehouse before she'd fully grown into her stage persona. I liked some songs more than others. Didn't care for the lyrics of "stronger than me".
Volim njen glas, al ne bi baš rekla da mi je ovo njen najdraži album
This album was cut from my version of the list, the only Winehouse album on it is Back to Black. Which is as it should be. This album is good, but it's not list-worthy.
For those who like the genre, I guess they will enjoy. Unfortunately its not my case.
A-Ok.
Amy Winehouse had a great voice, the songs have some interesting lyrics but the music gets a little samey. It's probably an album that would grow on me with more listens. Surprisingly jazzy in places.
It's ok but it's not Back to Black is it?
Another ex-1001 album. If they aren't being removed, then we have an extra 77 albums to get through! 😆 http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex As expected, great vocals. Arrangements on the first half felt too stripped back, much better in the second half. Enjoyed the nightlife lounge bar vibes.
Quite pleasant.
An amazing voice, very personal modern slice-of-nightlife stories with Rat Pack grooves, something old and something new. I should love it but I don't, the style feels overdone and forced, it doesn't connect with me.
Sa samo 20 godina!! RESPECT. Ali dosadnjikavo iako ipak njen glas dosta popravi. Iman osjećaj da san za bolji doživljaj tribala pozornije pratit tekst, šta nisan
V chilled.
A good album of jazz inspired blues-pop the singing is distinctive and unusual in a pop music framework but what keeps me at arms length is that the arrangements don't grab me and I find the melodies difficult and unappealing. 3.5 🌟
I will admit that I don't think I'd ever listened to AW before this album came up, so I had absolutely no idea what to expect. What impressed me: - just 19 years old when this came out, clearly a powerhouse singer right out of the gate - I should be embarassed about what I'd accomplished at the same age (which we basically are/were) not so much: - just isn't really my genre or style
Just not my jam. The songs all sound the same to me, with the same cadence. Lyrics are mostly about being an oversexed young woman with substance abuse disorder, so not exactly relatable. I wish she’d gotten help. Rest in peace.
27 club merchant I hate to say it. Nothing and I mean nothing stands out to me. This sounds like a copycat of genuinely so many other artists before her. Like she can totally sing, and the production is on point. But I think my issue is nothing here sets her apart. Nothing here screams Amy Whinehouse. There’s no substance. Nothing memorable, and nothing (to me) that sets her apart from the others of this time. It’s just super forgettable easy listening shit that’s vibey but I’ll never remember it. I really don’t get the glaze.
First time I've actually listened to Amy Winehouse. Hot take, don't love her voice. It's quite impressive in moments and then a bit grating in others. Don't hate it, don't love it. Some songs would be a 1/5, some are closer to a 4. The less she scats the better.
Honestly, pretty irritating. She might be fine in small doses, but a whole album is a rough listen.
She can sing, but what is she singing? Lyrically, Stronger Than Me is almost as bad as Korn's All In The Family, which stands out as being the worst song this project has foisted on me. We all know Back To Black is where she came into her own (for better or worse), and this is really just a practice session shaking out the kinks. And there are a lot of them - the lyrics are bad, the beats are usually pretty bad, and if they're not, they're barebones. The jazz is just...tones? Nothing going on. The less you listen to it the better it is, which reveals it to be more vibes-based than anything else. Empty album with some solid style and pipes. Not as bad as the two I'm giving it, but not on even enough ground to get the three.
More less.
If I’m being frank this does not belong on this list . I lover her voice but this is just so meh
Better than Coldplay
Surprised that Frank made it to the list - I was expecting Black to Black instead This is fine, but I'm not a fan of this one I didn't care for it 23 years ago, and I still don't really want to listen to this now Meh . . .
4/10 - It’s an album that made the list because it’s the debut of someone who got much more interesting over time. It feels very safe in sound compared to her later work. It feels sleepy, slow, and it lacks intrigue.
A pretty impressive debut for a 19 year old!
I got bored of it halfway through. I think her music is just not for me.
Inte riktigt min sorts musik, inte dåligt men inget jag slår på igen. 2.5/5
Generational talent, but her style of singing was never for me.
me realizing amy winehouse wouldve been kind of a pick me girl not a fan of the almost cursive singing either
i would not choose to listen to this again. sounds like it would be in a Macy's commercial around Christmas time man, i still have like 7 songs left :sigh: acid jazz
love her but this was underwhelming i thought.. still enjoyable to listen to but i'll stick with back to black like the normie i am
Wow, coming in early with bald faced sexism. Inflexible, toxic gender roles hurt everyone. I can't believe I'm hearing this girl bitch about a guy wanting to have an emotionally mature relationship and asking him if he's gay for wanting to talk things out. What do you want, lady? Someone that hits you? Yikes. You lost me on the first track and things did not improve after. I will give credit for the honest, self-reflection on "What is it About Men" (+1, contextually). So, one redeeming track. Kinda' sad, really. Grats on the pipes; great voice. Pass.
I wasn’t that impressed by this album. Many of the songs are similar and one is all about how she got drunk and purposefully cheated on her partner, but it’s ok because it’s Amy Winehouse. Gimme a break dude.
Great artist. OK album 🤷♀️
I had almost forgotten that Amy sang RnB. The voice started to be really annoying to me around the 9th song, also not a fan of the wind section, quality like it's probably a 5/5 but a 2 for me.
An amazing voice, and astounding potential, but the songs just aren’t doing much for me.
Compared to imperial-phase Amy this has less tattoos, less arch sensibility, more "sultry" jazz crooning and by-the-numbers r&b melisma. Feels a bit like 1950s cosplay (the "Frank" of the title is Sinatra), except there are so many tells--the bari sax lines with their modern, post-funk, post-rap conception of rhythm (which obviously has its place, but while the instrument's timbre sounds okay when you're hearing it, the licks in question sound banal and boring when you sing them yourself); the "crackly vinyl" effect with the too-loud, too-crisp drums over it; the lyrics about having fun gay and trans friends, the point of which seems to be to establish that Amy has fun gay and trans friends.... "Fuck Me Pumps" is a no-longer-timely takedown of football WAGs that starts out singing "F me pumps" (why?); the final line keeps catchily coming back at me in the form "Fuck me in your fuck me pumps," which is nicely polymorphous, but ... that's not the actual line. Overall, this makes me think of the time when I was 21 I tried to change my email address to aportraitinflesh@hotmail.com (it's a David Bowie line, if you must know) and my very sweet and good but very square friend immediately emailed me like "Ooooh, nice new email, sexy, I like it! Gotta go with the attitude" and I grimaced very hard and never used that email again (Amy being Carol in this scenario); or once when we were at karaoke and the very wholesome blonde kiwi girl my girlfriend worked with sang "Sexual Healing" dead straight, and Heidi couldn't handle the cringe and dragged me up to sing "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood ("Relax / Don't do it / When you wanna cum"), because "It's the same as what she just did to us!" (Amy being poor horrified New Zealand Amanda). It's not as detached OR as messy as her later work and comes across as performative yet bland, despite her talent.
Nah, didn't much care for this. Of course she was a talent but neither the style nor most of the content is appealing to me.
Talented singer, but boring material.
I liked the instrumentals. I think that's the good point of her album. it's just not something I'd fully listen casually again I do like some songs and would listen to them casually... if I happen to be in the mood I wish she'd stop singing at some point to enjoy the instrumentals and sto the lyrics about men. Which while some are kinda interesting, get kinda boring at some point, and the album isn't even that long
Its a no for me, dog.
This selection feels early and less refined, more true to jazzy freak flag
I just couldn't get into this album. I like some of her other work but this one just didn't click. 2/5
Nothing grabs me from her debut. 'Back to Black' was quite a lot better, as you might expect. Maybe it needs another listen but can I be arsed? Nah...
You can tell it’s the precursor to Back to Black. It’s like it has the ingredients but just doesn’t hit. It’s ok. It’s just a bit generic sounding. Can tell she was still finding her style.
Yeah arguably great but just not for me. Clearly not as good as back to black. Can see shes still finding her feet
This is like a demo of what Back To Black becomes. Shes clearly got the talent but the songs are shite. And the music doesnt help. And they clearly told her less is more with her Mariah Carey esque yoping. Went down classical sound route for Back to Black. Right decision. Bury this album.
2/5 Favorite Song: What is it About Men
She’s just not quite there yet. 19 years old. 2
I feel like the retro vibe feels forced and a bit lame now that it's also dated. Some of the instrumentals are interesting but most of the time the vocals just feel like a lounge singer making up a melody on the spot and dripping F bombs for shock value.
I appreciate the artist but couldn't get through this whole album, just not my cup of tea
Furchtbar
Not a fan. 2
Overall: 4/10 I'll admit that Amy was an incredibly talented vocalist and a very troubled person, but some of the lyrical content on this album made me a bit uncomfortable and I found it unpleasant to listen to at times. Fav Song: In My Bed
Really liked the music … kinda can’t stand her voice. Just really grating to me / not really into her overall style 2.5
This is alright. It didn't get my attention the way Back to Black did. I think that one is more polished and the experience is evident. There isn't anything particularly wrong with this but nothing stands out either It's also pushing it with the length 2.5 Highlights: In My Bed
are you gayyyyyyyyyyyy?????????????
Langweilig
Give me Ella or Judy any day, never really was a fan of Amy.
I really enjoyed this in the background, and she had a tremendous gift. It's not my favorite for active listening, but there is an undeniable quality to her voice that is unique.
Definitely feeling the runtime… overall a bit too same-y for me over its 16 tracks. Amy‘s voice manages to keep me interested, but the instrumentation doesn‘t catch my attention on most of the tracks.
The lyricism was immature, the songs didn’t stand out from each other and researching after, it makes sense that this is a first album. Her voice is nice but I can think of myriad singers who have done this genre better (including her on Back to Black).
Difficult to review this one. I don’t care for her voice. It’s nasally and in a pitch that grates my nerves. She has wonderful control and definitely commits to every note. I struggled through it.
Find most of these tracks really undercooked. Album is way too long for what it is. Saved by Amy’s vocals but even then I find her delivery irritating alot of the time
Nice voice but the music is dull. Her album after that is better.
Nice vocals, music is tolerable. Fuck Me Pumps was entertaining. Not much else to it for me. 2
I like jazz. Not so sure about whatever this is. I feel like she received a lot of attention at the time because her persona stood out from the excessively bland pop stars of the day. Listening in 2026 there is not much remarkable or commendable about this music. Mum sure does love it though.
usually girlie pop is cool but this foid foid foid sahur mad disrespected the big sinatras name, sung about FEMBOYS in the first song of the album, and overall was MID! some of the songs are alright tho
I thought I would enjoy this more than I did. Not my kind of music and the lyrics got a bit boring after a while
After giving Back to Black a glowing review only a few weeks ago, I was very surprised by how little of this one worked for me. When it hit is was great, but more tracks missed than not. And some parts I found almost unbearable. Maybe I’m nuts and need counselling.
For lack of a better word, there was something unsettlingly “American” about this album. It created too much dissonance in my mind to really get into it.
Yo, why was this shit so homophobic? I feel the opposite of how I did after that Lana album. The first song SHOCKED me with how genuinely hateful it is. Musically, the album is quite good, but I was never able to really recover from the first track. She is a great singer and her band is ASTONISHING. Lyrically, I found it meanspirited and shallow as fuck, which is tough when the vocals are supposed to be the selling point. Its like, if Low End Theory had kept Adam and Steve, the album would be unlistenable. Thankfully, they cut it. Wish Amy had done the same. Idk man 3.5 minus 1 for homophobia tax makes it a 2.5
a raw talent here, the songs don't meet the singer's talent
3/10
The voice and the vibe but the songs just aren’t there.
entiendo que sea una leyenda, pero no me gusta casi su voz aunque tiene mucho flow. Ni su música tampoco me gusta, es como. Jazz, R &B y Hip hop. La trifecta de lo terrible para mí ajajaj What is it about men está buena y le di like
I respect the voice and the talent but this isn’t my kind of music.
guess I wasn't there
Just not my thing.
La même toune pendant beaucoup trop de minutes. Amy Winehouse a une personnalité mais pas la musique en arrière. 2.49 étoiles
Thought I’d like it more
I just find her voice while grating
Big massive MEH
boring and overrated
Not my cup of tea pookie.
Seemed promising in the opening. I quickly became bored with it. Liked the house band, but then Whinehouse extemporising over the top of it was wearing. Also seemed a bit ‘this and that’ lots going on without any sense of a whole. Whilst I did manage to get to the end, I didn’t enjoy it. Something about the arrangements made me move onto Bob Marley and then Massive attack. 2 16 tracks. ‘Fave’ track - err 8? I’m my bed?
Songwriting isn’t great. Production hasn’t aged well. Mid.
2.5/5
I was bored. Amy has a great voice but the songs felt lacking. I don't know if I was in the wrong mood or something, but this was very disappointing.
Not for me!
174/1001 This does nothing for me. Back to black is so much better. 4/10
Głowa mnie rozbolała
This is an album that drags on a bit too long. The lyrics aren't very complex, and none of the songs really stood out to me, they all sound very similar. The instrumentals and the vocals are good, but overall it didn't do anything for me after the first listen.
mid repetitiv
I wasn't the biggest fan. Seems like that if I liked that kind of music, that it would be a very good album.
4/10 Really not all that. Lyrically naive and tedious, musically deriverative and uninspired. Also 1. Don't have a song called Outro that gets my hopes up that we're done, only to put two more unnecessary tracks on the end. 2. Stop tacking crappy little half ideas for songs on to other tracks and giving it a name with a slash in the middle. The reason you were unable to drag that 1:05mins song out to a full song was because it wasn't very good! You should have killed it.
Nothing special, too much singing and not enough good tunes.
I just find this album a bit annoying really
I really like her second album.
For a few songs, I enjoyed the music and vocals. Lyrics not my favorite.
she was such a talent, but - with the exception of stronger than me - the songs on this particular record felt rather forgettable. still an absolutely knock your socks off debut though. now back to black on the other hand….
2 1/2 Stars: Where are the hits?! Clearly this was produced as a calling card; a showcase of an original and unique voice. But the songs themselves are pretty snoozy. Most of this record is pretty forgettable and there are a lot of tracks to get through.
I will never understand the UK obsession with Amy Winehouse. What is shocking is that she has more than one album (thus far) on this list. If we were to only talk about soul/r&b lets use Otis Redding as an example. Perhaps one of the most talented singers to ever live has one album on this list, Amy has two. Sam Cooke has one. Smokey Robinson has one. Fuck all the way off with that.
Amy Winehouse again! The singing is wow, and the backing is moderately engaging (while sounding a little bit like a professional jazz band got asked to do backing for songs they didn't care about). But the lyrics are (I would say unintentionally) depressing and off-putting. I'd FAR rather listen to Back to Black again. It's Pretty Poor, 3/10.
I don’t like the music and don’t think Winehouse deserves two entries on the list. I mean she’s definitely good I just don’t like this overly affected style. Two stars.
Great soul and R&B. I don’t really like soul and R&B.
top 3 - Intro / Stronger Than Me, Know You Now, I Heard Love Is Blind. Wasn’t super into it. Amazing voice though, definitely the highlight here.
Like her a lot but this wasn’t for me
You can hear the potential in this album, but, for the most part, this sounds a lot like generic early 2000s RnB/Pop
4/10 Casual homophobia in the first song? Ugh. Instant turnoff. I don't particularly enjoy Amy's singing on this album, and I'm not a huge fan of her voice - it sounds like a teenager singing. Also not really into the lyrics - like the voice, they sound so immature. This is very clearly a debut album by someone who hasn't grown into their abilities yet.
My rating 2.4. Why is this on here??? Did we really need 2 Amy Winehouse albums on this list? And besides that it’s just not very good.
I can appreciate Amy Winehouse, great voice, and I wouldn’t begrudge her being included on the list but it’s not my thing really. Much of this didn’t land at all but In My Bed piqued my interest with the Nas sample, and Help Yourself was genuinely likeable and similarly Amy Amy Amy that followed. It feels too long, clocking in at just under 1 hour. The album got more interesting towards the end, perhaps a little more jazzy, but a case of too little, too late. Listening on streaming perhaps loses something as having 2, what I discovered are hidden, tracks after an outro track seems a bit anticlimactic, even if more pleasant than much of what came before.
Better than a lot of this kind of music, but it’s not for me.
Great song writing let down a bit by mediocre tunes. You can see the impact Ronson made when they joined up on Back to Black,
It’s better than Back in Black but my general thoughts on Winehouse’s music is it’s the equivalent of driving a Ferrari down the road to Tesco. Golden plated vocals without the songs to really back them up as impressive as they are
Amy Winehouse..... I remember her mostly for her torrid private life and early death. I vaguely remember "Rehab" but that song is not on this album. Let's give it a go. - "Stronger Than Me," is....... an interesting take. Musically I quite like it - but the lyrics are problematic 23 years later. Hey fellas - is it gay to ask your girlfriend her opinion on something that directly affects her? What about checking in? Is that pretty gay? Who is this girl. I like that Amy has a unique perspective in all of her songs, but I don't necessarily like that perspective. Her thoughts are all over the place, and she clearly has issues with dudes. Which makes good drama. Overall the style is jazz blended with modern R&B. Which is fun to listen to for the most part. "In My Bed" is great - I love the backing track. But it's just not hitting with me. She lays herself bare on this record, which is great, except - I don't like her. I don't want to go on this journey with her. Sorry, Amy, it's TWO STARS
Only sing i enjoyed Fuck me pumps
Produktionen känns väldigt utdaterad, gillar inte hennes gnälliga röst och låtarna är ärligt talat ganska generic.
I just don’t get this. What I hear is a young Brit (at the time) doing a contrived, cliche jazz voice and styling with immature, again cliche oh, so modern lyrics. Yet it’s held up as something spectacular, which strikes me as retrospective inflation due to the circumstances of her death more than actual content. Always thought there was more the white oh so edgy persona than anything musical sailing this particular ship. She was middling ok talent, that got massive coverage for what persona, were at the time better retro modernist jazz vocalists that never got said exposure. Didn’t get this at the time, remember wife’s friend saying she was a modern Sinatra and laughing , and still don’t retrospectively get the adulations, it’s a fairly bland post modern record, I just don’t hear the supposedly uniqueness. Was 2 Star. Bored then and again today.
Absolutely brilliant for what it is. Absolutely none of my business at the same time.
Her voice isn't to my taste. It might be because she has been followed by just so many poor imitators. The arrangements on this are that neutered modern pop jazz thing that I find incredibly dull. One of the worst aspects are the rhythm tracks. Sure sampled drums and simple programmed drums are more up to date but they miss the point that jazz needs feel and swing.
I’d never heard her debut album before now. … Well, she certainly got a lot better.
Was expecting to really enjoy this but in the end I found it a bit monotonous.
Great voice and great talent, but all the songs are lacking in direction and focus.
well, i'll say that the band sounds great here. this would have been 4 or 5 stars as an instrumental album. unfortunately, the lyrics and themes throughout the album are utter dogshit. i get it, she was 19 when this came out, but she's singing these songs like she's the most important person in the world and is taking time out of her busy schedule to educate us poor, pitiful peons. "all you other women are sluts, every man is worse, and i'm the only one who's right" seems to be her thesis. her voice is fine for a song or two, but the more you hear it, the more it just sounds whiny and self-centered. two stars because again, the band sounds top-notch here. favorites (instrumental only): fuck me pumps, what is it about men, amy amy amy
Frankly my dear, it's not for me
To be frank, Frank is not that great. Winehouse has got the voice but this tribute to Sinatra falls flat much like his works. This record was a bit too poppy for me and mostly lacked depth. Maybe she hadn't hit the lows of alcoholism yet to bring out that rawness you hear on her future albums. Maybe I'm judging this one too harshly cause we are in a list slump. Either way I'm giving it a 1.7 star rating.
..
Fair
2.2
I used to love this album (the songs I downloaded off Limewire at least) but this did not age well. Amy's vocal effect is obviously unnatural. I would have loved to hear what her real voice sounded like. the lyrics are immature, misogynistic, and homophobic. The music arrangements sound like the soundtrack to a themed nightclub. It pains me to say this music style comes across as little more than a gimmick.
Wat saai
Beetje chaotisch na elkaar allemaal
İlk defa Amy Winehouse dinledim glb güzel aslında da benlik aşırı değil o yüzden 2 — You sent me flying not bad
Wow that first song really hasn’t aged well. And I’m just not feeling the rest of the album. Her voice - so strong and sultry on Back to Black - is all over the place and a bit grating here. I definitely hear the Billie Holiday influence, all to the good, but she just can’t sustain it.
Meh
vocal talent ≠ interesting music
You can have different opinions about Back to Black, but at least it never gets boring; Frank is an hour long, and halfway through I was already tired of these repetitive homages to Sinatra. Another reason to consider that it was Ronson who made the second album a cult classic.
Fine, just didn't do much for me
1001misogynistsgenerator.com: 1001 Misogynists To Hear Whinge Until You Want To Die! anyway I don't care much for modernized lounge pop. old me hopes that 19 year olds that make albums like this are proud of it at the time even if their tastes change for the better later.
Now that I have listened to two Amy Winehouse albums I think my overall perspective is complete: If she were the lead singer of a rock band, I would probably like that band a lot. But she wasn’t, she was a neo-lounge singer (or whatever you’d call it), and that is fundamentally music for dorks.
How much soul is too much? This album is a good example of a talented singer that makes below average interesting songs (so far). The genre is defintely not my thing, but better melodies would definetly help. I know Back to Black is way better than this. Only song that didn’t bore me: Amy, Amy, Amy.
i see why she's popular
I do not like Amy Winehouse. It just sounds like caterwauling to me!
Stunning, powerhouse vocals; bloodless but competent arrangements; simple, charmingly candid songwriting. I appreciated this but didn't truly enjoy it. Rather surprised to see her debut on this list, given that the follow-up was a vast improvement in every way.
This is not the Amy Winehouse record for me
My family never started listening to Amy until she passed, and then "Valerie" became one of the most played songs in our household. I confess that while I really enjoy the tones of her voice, I find some of the background music difficult to overcome. It sounds like conflicting songs at times and it becomes distracting. Her cover of "No Greater Love" is astounding, and I was really invested in "What Is It About Men," but the rest kind of faded into the background, unfortunately. It was good background music, though.
not for me
This is not a good album. Reminds me of a trash dive bar band.
Good storytelling
Track 1 was very groovy and reminded me of a jam song. In track 2, Amy Winehouse's unique vocals really shine through. She has such a distinct voice and I have never particularly enjoyed her music much. I think there is a lot of vocal musicality, but it is lacking that in instrumentation which is usually more enjoyable to me. These first two tracks are also multiple compositions into one track, which I don't usually enjoy either especially when the transitions are as choppy as they are in this instance. Track 3 is honestly so bland to me. The whole song is just repetition, the vocals are flat, and instrumentation is thin and rhythmically simple. Track 4 is a feminist critique on contemporary relationships and hook-up culture. I like the message of this song a lot, as the lyrics also address the female desire to appeal to the male gaze, which is something that has significantly worsened over time with the growing popularity of social media. Track 5 is about trying to replace a prior connection with someone who is similar or identical to that person. I like the lyric "he looks like you, but I heard love is blind," because I feel like it highlights that love is beyond looks and public image. Sometimes you don't get to choose who you love or how you love, which is a blessing and a curse. Track 6 is a love song, or rather two love songs. I like the beat of this song, but yet again I feel like the overall blend of musicality is lacking. Track 7 is a beautifully written, lyrical love song, drawing in more jazz themes. I personally am not a fan of jazz. Track 8 is my favorite song so far. I haven't realized this in the other songs, although it is true there, but generally there are not vocal harmonies which is why I always feel like the vocal performance is underwhelming/under delivering. In this song, there are more harmonies and I enjoy that very much. Track 9 is also a little more instrumentally interesting, as there is more of a groove going on that provides harmonies that are lacking in the vocals. No special notes about track 10. Track 11 is very groovy and vocally sounds different from the other tracks (in a good way). This one I would willingly listen to in my free time. Track 12 has an interesting call and response sequence that I like a lot. The vocals in this track are different from the rest of the album, much like in track 11. Track 13 was the outro. Track 14 has no special notes from me, not bad but not great. Overall, the album was mediocre. There were no songs that I thoroughly enjoyed, as the vocals and instrumentals never really quite matched up in the way that I like.
Nothing stood out to me at all on this album
Surprised how little I enjoyed this considering how much I like Back To Black. I like Help Yourself a lot but the rest were not engaging to me it was a bit of a slog and I scrubbed through a fair bit. Vocally she sounds like she’s trying to emulate something as opposed to how natural she sounds on BTB etc with the same singing style. Interesting subjects and themes she was kind of a pick-me asshole on this one, it was a fitting life-account for a 19yr old.
I didn't like this as much as the previous Amy Winehouse album. It just lacked a newness in it, and her vocal control was less utilized.
There’s two Amy wine house albums on here?I have similar feelings on this as the last one, great vocalist singing some really boring songs. This is a lyrical mess. Just really boring and I feel like she’s just cramming so many words and thoughts into nothing. These two albums have not been a good showing for making me understand her as a musical genius, Valerie is a slapper top 100 song all time though (not on this one).
kinda ass considering her other work
I’m mildly aware of Amy Winehouse. I hated her overplayed song Rehab, but I did enjoy Back to Black (largely because it was covered by Beyonce for The Great Gatsby Movie Soundtrack). I wouldn’t say I’ve identified with her style or ever explored much further. Intro/Stronger Than Me grabbed my attention with its lyrics, and Amy Amy Amy was catchy enough, but as the album continued it solidified that the music and song topics aren’t really my style.
Uh, this is not hitting those spots. It's a rough debut from a generational singer and it shouldn't be included as a must-listen album. Two stars because it is not abysmal, just rough.
Some good somgs
Great singer. Just not my thing.
Hello i am the real John, the chinese government has hacked me and they require me to give them 1 million yen please help. 2/5 lacks depth
This is the most 90s pop sounding 2000s jazzpop album, and not in a good way. The production between songs is pretty inconsistent. Pretty sure this is her first release... as each song goes on it sounds like Amy Winehouse is discovering that she sounds like Amy Winehouse. Ohhh doing a reggae thing now?...nope we've changed direction after the first verse, just the music has a reggae feel. Stand out songs:... Fuck Me Pumps... otherwise, they all sounded the same.
I didn't really enjoy Winehouse's singing on this album: I much prefer Back To Black.
I like her voice but this album wasn't for me
The album is good in a technical way. Amy Winehouse is an incredible artist with a talented voice musically gifted. Knowing that her back to black album exists and just how incredible it is by comparison this album is a stepping stone towards her ultimate greatness. If she never made back to black, I don’t know that she would’ve been a stand out.
Winehouse's undeniably great vocals make it so that even the weaker songs here have something that's worth listening to. Musically the album sits somewhere between traditional jazz / pop and neo-soul, kind of moving from the former to the latter as it goes on. It also gets stronger as it goes, feeling freer and less restrained by traditional pop conventions, though it never quite carves out its own sound. Winehouse's lyrics revel in being a mess, focusing on relationship drama and never caring about what others think of her. This attitude is mostly a positive, but it does sometimes cross the line into tiring, like when she calls her boyfriend gay or throws out some slutshaming straight out of a 90s hip hop album on "Fuck Me Pumps." This is worth a listen if you're a big fan of vocal prowess, but outside of that it's just another soul album.
I just don't get anything emotionally from this type of music. The jazz influence is interesting, her vocals are of course technically exceptional and full of character, it's just not a character I like.
Vocally excellent, felt like the album passed by in the background, no song stood out too much, certainly not a bad album just not my usual taste
Thought the car radio was on

Я этого не понял. Величие Эмми Уайнхаус слишком преувеличено.
Dick-fixated Nelly Furtado impersonator who looks like she smells like the ashtray in a 1977 Morris Minor Traveller. The fifties were a bit shit for music, why would I want to revisit?
It's alright, not for me tho
Unique voice. Never want to listen to this again.
Especially with the benefit of hindsight, it's pretty hard to know what to make of this album. As Amy Winehouse's debut, it's not hard to see why it made such a splash - Amy's talent is undeniable. But wow, what a depressing picture of the self-destruction that we now know was coming. Being only 19 at the time, I don't come away surprised that Amy's songwriting is raw, but I was caught off guard by just how openly unlikable she is. Right from the opener, Stronger Than Me, she declares a dependence on the man in her life while insulting him for not fulfilling this need, gratuitous homophobia and all. As the rest of the album plays out, it's clear that this is just one stage of a vicious cycle of lusting and chasing after bad men, then discarding them when they no longer meet the moment's need, all while insulting the other women who do the same thing and emotionally scarring herself in the process. The whole thing would be heartbreaking to see if she didn't seem so determined to throw away any sympathy we may feel for the situation. There are plenty of successful projects where an artist shines a light on their own personality flaws. But self-awareness is key to success in this type of work, and it is missing far too often in this album. To be fair, there are some glimpses of a deeper understanding here. Amy Amy Amy, in particular, shows her recognition of the repetitive nature of her relationship troubles, with Amy's better influences seemingly trying to pull her out of this cycle. With some willingness to read into the situational humor of the lyrics, I Heard Love Is Blind tries to straddle the boundary between insightful and unapologetically repellent in its excusing of infidelity. In the context of the remaining songs, though, it becomes difficult to give Amy the benefit of the doubt. In spite of it all, the album comes close to succeeding through Amy's sheer raw talent. In its best flashes, she offers a sneering take on Billie Holiday meeting 90s R&B. The jazz-infused vocals and bouncing bass lines laid the framework for her breakthrough with Back to Black. While that newer album allowed Amy to establish a stronger musical identity, the ground covered in her lyrics remained strikingly similar. Where in Frank her antics harmed herself and anyone who got close to her, by Back to Black, it was clear that she was her own primary victim.
I’ve was never really anAmy Winehouse fan, didn’t hate her or anything just wasn’t my type of music when she was at her peak and I’ve never bothered to listen to her since. This one hasn’t really changed my mind. It wasn’t the worst album ever but it just wasn’t for me. I’m aware that Back To Black is meant to be a lot better so maybe that will change my mind.
Women shouldn't sing
Bleak and sad diary of a very troubled person. Great voice.
Haven't heard any of these before. Like the beat and overall vibe, but no exactly the music I would search out for.
Back to Black was incredible, this wasn't. So happy she found her voice on the next album.
5/10
2.5
Some was fine, but only really enjoyed a song or two.
Not a huge fan of this album. Her other material is much better. This one sounds over produced and her voice doesn’t sound as good
Thought I would like this but it's just too much. Too over the top and a little annoying.
Razočarala sam se u prvoj polovini albuma, u drugoj polivini sam malo živnula i onda sam na poslednjoj pesmi zaspala. To je sve što imam da kažem o ovom albumu, baš ništa upečatljivo osim njenog glasa.
An undeniably great voice that, for reasons beyond my comprehension, does nothing for me. I found it almost painful to listen to more than 3 songs in a row. Sorry Amy.
Not my thing, a couple of interesting tunes but I couldn't listen to this again.
I was never a real fan of Amy Winehouse. This album was ok but didn’t really grab my attention.
I was working in a record store when this album came out and I remember people freaking out over it which was slightly mystifying to me. It’s true there aren’t many albums made now that channel classic soul sounds but I don’t think this is groundbreaking. It’s tough cuz I love her voice but I don’t love these songs.
In the early 00s this night club/60s soul revival exploded into our lives. Led by Amy Winehouse, there was Duffy, The Pipettes, Estelle, Adele, Lily Allen, Sharon Jones...it was everywhere. And when it popped up on a playlist or a blog or my radio, I always listened. But I never deep dived. Amy's story is more well know to me than any of her albums in full. So, it's weird that I would start with Frank and not Back to Black. But, that's the order they came out and that's what 1001 albums generator demanded. I rarely agree with Pitchfork but when they are Christgau are on the same page I listen to them. This is not an album I must hear before I die. It's a pastiche of retro ideas without actual songs. It's the artist that comes on around midnight in the bar, everyone's drunk and she just left working costumes backstage for her 99 seat theater company's production of a local playwright's reimagining of a popular comic strip. Highlights: Fuck Me Pumps Amy Amy Amy
This is just kind of annoying, honestly. It gives me a headache, the music feels like it's just looping over and over until it ends, the structure is not well-defined.
Amy was a talented singer but there is something about her voice that I can’t stand. It’s almost nasally. I want her to not sing as much. I don’t like these songs as they are shallower than a kiddie pool. Also, if the producers have to insert old record scratch sounds, I immediately want to turn it off.
This started out great, but lost it's luster when it didn't change any style wise over the rest of the album. Hearing the same sample as Nas' "Made You Look" was a bit jarring haha.
I did not get it at the time and still don't really get it. She had a great voice and a very tragic end but jazzy pop noodlings not my bag.
I expected to like this a lot more than I did, sadly! I enjoyed the second half more than the first half, but overall I was still left underwhelmed. I wasn't crazy about the instrumentation, and some of the lyrics rubbed me the wrong way. Probably a 2.5.
Amy Winehouse was a very talented singer and it’s a shame she couldn’t keep her demons at bay. I loved the Back To Black album, but I’d never heard her album Frank. Apparently, it was the one that broke her or at least got the right people to hear her. However, Frank gets on my nerves so badly. I can only really listen to it when I’m doing something else. Again, it’s just me, but I hate the whole turning one-syllable words into 20, or changing the pronunciations of words, like curb to c-ur-ay-o-ur-ubay. No, it’s curb. Her scatting and be-bopping are nails on a chalkboard to me. Maybe if I hadn’t heard so many less talented singers who copied her style, it wouldn’t bother me as much. Frank’s music also sounds more like a hip-hop album than a nice classic jazz album. Again, it’s just my personal taste. But Back To Black just sounds so much cleaner and classier. And it led to my discovery of the great Mark Ronson. If you like Amy Winehouse and you’ve never heard Frank, I think it probably is a must-hear for fans. The whole album isn’t full of the stuff that drives me crazy. There are great songs on here, like F Me Pumps, I Hear Love Is Blind, and There Is No Greater Love, but they are mostly the songs that sound like classic jazz standards. If you’re like me and little stupid things irritate you, then you might want to tread lightly.
A lot of the same sounding stuff. Can see the appeal if its your thing but if it isn't... like it wasn't for me... then its a lot.
This feels surprisingly anonymous and schmaltzy. Her talent is there and you can see where the next album is going to come from, but I’m surprised this album made much of an impact as is.
Didn’t like Back In Black much and this is worse. Not for me.
Her debut album is raw & jazzy, but ultimately lacking the soul & bravado that she would bring us on "Back To Black".
Second album de AW généré après "Back to Black" que je n'avais pas vraiment apprécié (noté 2/5). Aucun morceau connu dans celui-ci. Globalement cet album n'est pas mieux que le précédent, il ne mérite pas une meilleure note. =>2/5
I've never really listened to Amy Winehouse despite seeing her name thrown around. Almost always been in a positive light so it made me curious. Never got around to it though. I was at least familiar with "Rehab". I guess because of that I was expecting this to be a little different? More up-tempo? I haven't heard it in a long time but somehow wasn't expecting this album to sound like this for some reason. Honestly just kind of thought it was ok. Definitely not bad but nothing I'd write home about either. I'm curious how different her other albums are. I waffle between a 3 and 2 because her lyrics weren't overly to my taste.
Really not for me. Always feels controversial to say but I never got the Amy Winehouse hype.
Not my jam, didn’t make it half way through the album.
Good vocals and she's always had her own individual sound. But not one of her best albums and seemed to drag on.
gets a bit samey
Not my thing
A troubled laby sings light jazz, but she does not sing for me.
Meh 2.4
Signature Amy Winehouse sound. I like it I’m the same way I like Back to Black…a little bit goes a long way. Not an album that I’d want to listen to all the way through very often, but definitely some songs I’d pull off the album to listen to in a mix.
I always found Back to Black to be a bit depressing but thankfully this wasn’t depressing but it seemed toxic
Meh, ok but derivative
Une étoile pour la voix et les musiciens derriere. Le reste : des paroles synthétisant l’ensemble des stéréotypes mascu et trad wife, en direct du début des années 2000.
I prefer "Back To Black" over Frank. It's not bad and Amy sounds great as expected, but its just not a fully formed an album as Back to Black is. Call it 2.5 mainly for her performance, but I won't be back to hear this one more.
Eh, probably closer to a 3 but just doesn't do it for me. Earlier female vocalists that she was inspired from did it better
Even as someone who has never particularly liked Amy Winehouse's music, I found this album pretty interesting. The sound varied from an older, jazzy style to more modern 90s/00s tracks. At times it reminded me a lot of Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, others more like Billie Holiday. Winehouse has a strong voice and singing style that stands out from the crowd. Hard not to recognize her talent. All that said, I still didn't really like this album that much. I found it pretty boring despite its positive qualities. It was also long, which exacerbated the boringness for me. The songs had too much of a focus on the vocals and too little on the music for me. The horns/brass did come in for fills at times, but still were rather subdued on the whole. That's a product of the stye and production, which is likely why I don't love this style very much. Mr. Magic was probably the song I found the most engaging, and that was the last track- a bonus/hidden track at that. The lyrics also felt a bit juvenile at times. To go back to the Lauryn Hill comment, I think that is a big contrast between them. Hill sang about very mature, adult events and experiences. Winehouse's songs feel much more of a youth/naive mentality. I've mentioned it before for other albums, but it's an issue for me as a listener. I guess that's to be expected given how young she was at the time this came out. So, while I can appreciate the talent involved here, I still just don't like the album all that much. A lot of that had to do with the style not really being something I enjoy. There were a some good songs here, and there was nothing on it that I would say was plain bad. I didn't hate it, but I didn't find it particularly good. Overall: 2.3/5
Amy’s albums break my heart. I heard all that potential in the first one, with words of warning all over the place. This album was really good, although her vocal range was limited
a mish-mash - vocals heavily influenced by classic jazz but some very standard nu soul beats. this album can't decide what it wants to be, and it would have been more fully realised if it had been ALL THE JAZZ or ALL THE NU SOUL/HIP HOP BEATS.
Not really my style. I find it fairly boring without much to distinguish songs. I understand the talent, but it doesn't speak to me.
Moze byc, calkiem git
I've never really got the hang of this album. It's pleasant, makes nice dinner party music for example. Always felt it was lacking a little oomph though I think. The songs don't wow me like the voice does.
Not a surprise that she died of an OD, she sounds wasted. Very sad, her vocals could have been good
Boring, uninteresting, same old.
I guess she saved the best for last, this was not very enjoyable
The persistence of r&b as a pop or rock platform is something that hasn’t made a lot of sense to me. It’s often if not always a showcase for nearly perfect musicianship and performances. And it’s nearly always a nostalgia exercise: outstanding vocalist (male or female), backing instrumentation that is updated just enough to be “modern”, but the basics of the songs are still the same basics. On the more rock side of the r&b spectrum you have the Black Keys/Jack White and the endless iterations of this - I just heard a recent Goo Goo Dolls - a GOO GOO DOLLS SONG - that was working this angle. Frank is all believable, impeccably executed, that’s not my issue, it just feels like a limited space for Winehouse, one that she was only starting to break out of on her worldwide phenom follow-up (but still kept within the cookie cutter confines of “soul singer”). Reading up on the history of its production, it was so deliberate in its creation and management of the artist so much so Winehouse was kept a secret. This is not the product of Winehouse coming up with a set of songs on her own and committing them to acetate, but instead a lengthy, laborious bit of music factory work, the end goal putting plastic discs in the homes of as many customers as possible.
It's an alright album obviously she is a great singer but the style and music just doesn't do anything for me. I'm sure it's ground breaking and all that. The beats are not terrible, it's just made for someone besides me to enjoy. Tragic how her life went, no one deserves to die like she did.
unfortunately i am not into jazz:(
Quite forgettable pop for me. Found myself skipping a few songs out of boredom. Clearly talented with a great voice but this does nout for me. I remember being in a bar years ago in Poland where they played an AW record, I hardly recognised any songs but really enjoyed it. Very jazzy. This wasnt it. Hopefully whatever I was listening to pops up one day.
Felt a bit morbid listening to this. It is quite a sad album, loads of tracks about needing attention or affection. All fairly insipid though. Her extreme sound on Back to Black really did suit her. A few too many warbles and weird runs for my liking, and some of the coffee shop jazz stuff was soporific.
you my lady boy
Tried to like it. Not for me. 2.
She's clearly very good but I'm just not really a fan.
Didn't really care for this.
I never “got” Amy Winehouse. She’s good.. not GREAT. She has a pretty generic singing style and minimalist music. Sounds like Adele or Duffy or Joss Stone or a lot of other singers. She sure did burn out instead of fading away, though. OK singing, OK songs. Not my thing.
it was good background music to have on while working, but nothing stood out to me in particular.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard her sons before, though I had heard of her. It’s not a genre I usually listen to and found I didn’t like the music or her lyrics for the most part, and her voice became grating after awhile.
too line
Terrific voice, music is meh.
This ain’t it, although it does have its moments on the back half. Dave put it well, her vocals are too drowned out in the mix
Feels weird to have this AND Back To Black, which is so much more of a complete artistic statement Cute album cover though
starkes erstes lied ansonsten fast nur 5/10. gefällt mir nicht so
I don't care to listen to ballads of a woman's mixed feelings about their apparently favorite subject: men
4.5
Fine, the music just isn't for me. Way more vulgar than I was expecting, but to be fair I never listened to much Amy Winehouse. I thought that outro song (not 'Outro') was really good and wish the rest of the album was more like that.
Hit and miss, got a little bit boring.
