Reviews (page 8 of 13)

Siempre me ha parecido que su prestigio estaba por encima de sus méritos reales. El mundo estaba deseando otra muñeca rota y la tuvo. Su modo de cantar es forzado y amanerado. Realmente me parece poco sincera. Y dicho lo anterior, aquí canta mejor que en siguiente disco.

Good album. Good jazzy soul sound. Lyrics were great too and definitely held my interest. But defiiitely not an album I would listen to again. 3/5

Oh yes, been wanting to listen to this for a while. Didn’t even know it was on the list. Let’s go! On first listen, her talent is clear but I also think you can see that her voice and delivery wasn’t quite honed yet (completely understandable!). It’s good, it’s Amy, but it’s not back to black. But she is bloody 19!! Real Macy Gray and Lauren Hill vibes, of course, with all the old female crooners too. Some great lyrics and play on words too. A lovely modern slant on this age old themes (and sound) Maybe harsh now knowing what she’s capable of and judging against that. Enjoyable, good songwriting and structure. Slightly polished diamond! (3.5)

Great production- solid debut

This is a nice album. It's hard to deny her talent. Her voice is very strong and unique. The vibe on this album is so great. You can hear what's to come on Back to Black. Another 27 club member. Don't do drugs kids, or I guess alcohol in her case. Another talented artist dead in their prime.

3/5 i did'nt knew that amy winehouse does/did jazz, not bad not good, but of course compared to other music good

I've never heard anything by Amy Winehouse besides Rehab. I kept hearing how great of an artist she was, but I don't get it. She's okay.

Her voice is so unique. Sometimes she sounds like a 50's starlet and other times she sounds like a druggie. It really just depends on the song she is singing.

Amazing vocals, very 20 year old though

Fun sound, some killer, searing lyrics, but not a ton that I wanted to save

Album starts to work at the 7th track and is a good listen after that. Highlight: In my bed

Not your typical song structure. Amy's just singing her stories

I’m a fan of Amy Winehouse. I usually put on her b-sides comp though.

It was okay, not really my style, but I can respect the uniqueness and power her voice had.

Bl poznam drug album, ampak na splošno nisem nikol ful poslušala Amy takrat. Predvsem mi je noro, da je Amy kle stara okol 19, 20. Mi pa do zdej vse zveni kinda isto. "Fuck Me Pumps" je zabaven besedilno, (čeprou postara se slabo, don't get me wrong, v besedilih je ful stvari of the time, k se slabo postarajo - npr., spraševanje tipa, če je gej, ker je bolj emotional kot ona v "Stronger Than Me".) me spomne na kšne njene kasnejše, sam ritem uzad me pa ubija - totalno early 2000s stil, skozi cel komad isti. Sam to sm slišala. "I Heard Love Is Blind" je čist fajna balada. Ampak, poj gremo pa v dva coverja & taprvi ma mal reggae ritma uzad? Why though? (Wiki mi pove, da je producent Salaam Remi znan po takih ritmih, tko da I guess loh njega krivim za ta abomination.) Cover od "(There is) No Greater Love" so posneli bolj z minimalistično spremljavo glasbil & it's great. Je pa mal jarring k gre poj v "In My Bed" in je kr hip hop ritem uzad - ampak, komad mi je pa na splošno ljubši k prva polovica albuma. Vsaj mal je drugačen, bolj zapomljiv. "Take the Box" je kul. "Help Yourself" tud. (Glede na wiki, so mi singli všeč, which makes sense. Ta dobri komadi bojo vrženi širši publiki.) "Amy Amy Amy" je horny af. "Mr Magic (Through the Smoke)" je ful všečen. In konec.

Good but not my sound

Tortured soul. Recklessness comes through in some of the lyrics, but a great voice and some good tunes. Not as polished as Back to Black, but that adds some authentic appeal.

Strong start (4) that wears out its welcome over time (eventual 3). Back to Black is a much stronger album by a virtuosic singer who’s developing here.

This isn’t a style of music I usually seek out, but the singing is lively and fun.

I liked it!

Fun album, good singles

It’s not the worst

I enjoyed it more than I expected, less dark than Back to Black, more naive and sweet, amazing voice!

It was fine

Great voice, nice chill jazz, I didn't listen to the lyrics too closely but I think they're pretty good. Not a whole lot to add, but I liked it.

There's another Amy Winehouse album?!

Some of her singing was overdone and takes away from the melodies of her songs. But there’s song cool production, some interesting lyrics, and her jazzy sultriness was unique among the pop girls of the early 2000’s. Overall, not bad for a debut. If only she could have stayed sober.

Not listened to this one before. Enjoyed it, although not quite as much as Back to Black. 7/10

A young Amy sounds great but prefer the next album

I ignored Amy Winehouse in the 00s. I thought I was edgy and she was too ubiquitous to be cool. I’ve since come to really like Back to Black…the production, the hooks, the sadness in the lyrics, the vocal delivery, that 60s R&B aesthetic. Frank doesn’t have any of the things I like in B2B but I still didn’t hate it

Trendy coffee shop

Not her best work, but still ok

Alright vibe and good voice. Feels like it needs work but not bad.

Like the last time she came up her vocals are the star of the album And again the writing is pretty good. The compositions don't really pop for me. Although In My Bed with the Incredible Bongo Band and Nas samples caught me.

Some cool songs in this. Enjoyed arrangement in some later tracks. Drums seem not very live, so gives the logic loops feeling. Plus this type of songs is what every girl at the conservatory does. Sometimes seems like the Melodies of the songs were created my just taking the lyrics and jamming some souly vocalisations on top of jazz-soul simple chord loops. Later songs get better. Some nice lyrics about break ups…

She’s talented, good arrangement, just doesn’t resonate with me

Ok. Certainly not Back in Black

Solid voice

Yes, Amy Winehouse can sing like the best ever girl at karaoke and was had an electromagnetic, tragic persona, but outside of "Rehab" (not on this album), her music feels pretty by-the-numbers R&B

Sweet and of the moment.

She’s got a great voice, and I respect her style. This didn’t hit for me though. I’d like it more if I listened to it more I’m sure. Sadly this didnt entice me to repeat it.

Ok debut, men ikke mer.

freumii neiii so 2000er beats hani nöd gern aber naja megaa stimm aber you sent me flying macht so gaar nüt mit mier leider iwie allgemein isch alles chli zu lasch musikalisch, chli ruhigi gitarre und d perkussion isch au nöd so min fründ fuck me pumps het chli ussegstoche bis jz okok in my bed na cool! what is it about men isch iwie auno schön I'm so sorry aber ich langwile mich eifach wenn hörts endlich uuf AH letschts liedok mr magic na cool hey ja gar nöd min fall. alles isch zu seicht für mich und ihri stimm retteds au nümme, es git es 2 odeeer us respekt für sie es 3

56/1089 A really solid jazzy debut, her voice and style was undeniable. It flows quite nicely and makes for good background music but only a few songs stood out to me specifically… In My Bed What Is It About Men Amy Amy Amy 3 stars or 66/100

*2003. Debut album. *Sultry and playful jazz-pop. *Felt like a debut album - leaned more toward the jazzy side instead of the pop side. *Not a big fan of the slower songs, but the up-tempo ones were fun. *Sassy lyrics and typical Amy voice is a fun combo. *I would listen to this again, although her later stuff is better. RATING - 6.5/10

I like Amy Winehouse a lot, and it definitely deserves a spot on this list, but this album just doesn't hold up to Back to Black. It's good though.

Good album. Undeniable voice. Fresh sounding music with an old school vibe. It is a little rough around the edges in some spots, but the artist was rough all over. Fun listen. We know what happens when she gets a polished production... this one is on the cusp. Some great music. Loved Fuck Me Pumps, In My Bed and Take the Box. The two "hidden tracks" after the outro were nice as well. The album and sound definitely bring me back to the early 2000s - a nice musical time capsule. The voice maybe gone and gone too soon, but it will always be remembered as soon as you hear it.

Beautiful voice tortured soul. Her songs are not PC and I love it

I don't think her voice is as good on this one as on later albums but it's still very solid. Liked the lyrics on some of the songs, if her voice sounded like it did on later stuff this would get a 4 but it kinda irked me in parts.

Like that jazziness. Theme of the lyrics were a little too much of the ol "shit man" and "shit relationships" for my liking. But overall not a bad experience. I mean her singing and voice are truly unique

Some great tracks, some not so great tracks. 6/10

This was good, but I did find myself feeling like the album as a whole was a little long. It will likely grow on me with a few more listens but for now I’m going to say 3 stars.

This was good but didn't have the same impact or polish as her later album. Still a solid listen.

This was good - an enjoyable listen. What a voice and an artist. Probably not something I would listen to again over Back to Black though but still not a bad turnout.

Great breakup album 3.5/5

Amy was talented but I'm not a huge fan of her voice. This album was ok, 3*

You can see how amazing she is, but this album isn’t for me.

Listened to this en route to Singapore so perhaps a bit generous. I never really understood Amy Winehouse or the style of signing while she was active. The biopic didn’t capture my interest much either so I had sort of low expectations on this. The opener was strong and immediately captured my attention. I favorited 2 songs - Stronger than Me and Love is Blind. I like the enpowered, gritty lyrics more than the music she clearly had a vision and had been through some stuff. 3/5

Good album, enjoyed the lyrics and her voice obvs is pitch perfect. I think its an album that takes a couple of listens for someone like me who wouldn't usually choose this genre. I get the hype though. 3/5

I like the 'Back in Black' album more, but 'Frank' is okay.

A great debut, such a powerhouse voice! Waiting for back to black.

6/10 pretty nice, she’s got a good voice

I hadn't listened to this album for ages, and it's impossible to do so without bringing all the baggage and knowledge of everything that happened to Amy after this album was released. Frank is, naturally, brutally open and honest. The album is full of songs about failed/failing relationships (Take The Box/In My Bed), about men who don't measure up to her expectations (Stronger Than Me/Know You Now) and about how she revels in being the bad girl (Love Is Blind/What Is It About Men). They are archetypal Amy themes... ones that she will hone and improve in very similar storylines on her far stronger follow up, Back To Black. Musically, the album's sound is also less polished than it's successor. It has much more of a smoky jazz club feel, and in some points reminded me of bands from the London Jazz Scene of the 80s like Working Week, Animal Nightlife and Carmel. Some of my favourite tracks, musically though, are when they try something a bit different like In My Bed and Help Youself (which is reminiscent of Lauryn Hill to me). I enjoyed revisiting this album, but was also reminded that parts of Amy's story don't quite live to the legend.

Mid 3 I found it a tad boring sorry amy

Amys Debut. Unverwechselbarer Sound, je nach Stimmung passend. 3/5

Frank – Amy Winehouse (2003) | Neo-Soul / Jazz-Pop | Avg: 6.19 | Favorite Song: “In My Bed” What stood out to me was how raw and unfiltered it feels, but not always in a way that works. “In My Bed” was the highlight without question. It has this smoky, confident swagger, and the production finally matches Amy’s emotional intensity. You can sense that future greatness bubbling up in this track. The problem is, the rest of the album doesn’t consistently reach that level. Much of it settles into a mid-tempo haze that feels more like potential than a payoff. From a reviewer’s perspective, I see this record more as a stepping stone than a final destination. The jazz influence is intriguing but sometimes makes the album feel more aimless than polished. Lyrically, Amy’s sharp wit is already evident, but the hooks aren’t as sharp, and the pacing slows down at times. There’s enough here to make it worth revisiting, especially if you’re exploring her artistic development. But on its own, Frank is an uneven debut that flashes brilliance without fully settling into it.

it was okay, not really my thing

It's the most intelligent pop album of the decade and still demonstrates merit in 2025, but at the same time, it's mired in early 2000 production and musical convention somewhat. It's hard to deny that Winehouse was a brilliant artist though.

Amy Winestone shoulda went to rehab but that's not this album. She is one of many stars that I like to call burning stars. You know, the Jim Morrisons, Hendrix & Joplins of the world. Genius who went hard & fast with drugs & booze then later died young but left a lasting impact. Amy Winehouse wasn't that for me, while others might find her fascinating, i was lukewarm on her. Her voice is undeniable, there's some good tunes here. Nice arrangements. BUT there doesn't seem to be any hits here. Mr. Magic? FUCK me pumps? I liked it, didn't love it. 3

Early stages some good songs a little less refined than black. Overly scary in moments but I liked it

She had a voice no doubt. This album shows what was to come but it’s the later one that would be the one to listen to. Ignore the trauma open. It’s terrible yes but she shouldn’t be defined by it (even if one of her biggest hits suggests she should) An augur of things to come rather than a must hear.

Just okay for me, easy to listen to but nothing special

Slightly less mainstream than I was expecting. Hard to separate the music from the person though.

She has a great unique voice, interesting enough to make what otherwise quite dull songs half decent. Don't think I'd heard any of these before, felt a bit more casual than her bigger stuff. Would struggle to pick one song from the other but that's generally the case with Amy Winehouse id say. Well worth one listen, not sure id say it's good but completely understand why she was massive. 2.5.

Actually quite enjoyed this, didn't know any it the tracks but it's nice and chilled and she has a great voice and style. Not my thing really but no complaints. Think I preferred it to back to black, just because it was all new and I didn't feel all the baggage that went with that album I think 3.5

Rating: 2.5 I feel like we got our independence from Britain so I should be legally exempt from hearing a British woman do R&B for like an hour or something like that. I’m mostly kidding, it wasn’t bad.

I’ve never listened to Amy Whitehouse ever before and she has the most amazing voices I’ve ever heard. Production was on top as well having mixes of jazz, rock, blues and pop throughout the project. It wasn’t very mind blowing with a lot of similar sounding songs but I don’t think I disliked or felt any other way then positivity the whole time. My favourite songs were October Song and Know You Now. Overall it wasn’t very mind blowing or something I would re listen to but I still enjoyed it so I’m feeling a strong 7.8/10 3.9/5

Can I say one of a kind? Maybe not but she’s missed. Sad but her music lives on. It’s not as good as her next album, but this one is good too.

Hard to remember she was just 19 when listening to the vocals and the music; easy to remember she was just 19 when listening to the lyrics

Good introduction to Miss Winehouse, beautiful voice, just a shame it’s a massive album as it does become a bit much for an hour.

Great debut album. She's not quite up to the level she was when she recorded Back to Black, but it's still good.

not the best, still, so talented

Heartfelt, interesting lyrics and bluesy singing style, but Amy Winehouse just doesn't do anything for me.

Quite good, but there are some of her vocal inflection that gets on my nerves a bit. But still, it's good and I'm curious to listen to more form her. 3.5/5

she had such a classic voice. this album doesn’t have the major standouts but still some good stuff

First album back in ages. I enjoyed the jazzier parts of the album but was surprised to find I dont love her voice at certain times. Still a good album

This is better than the Eurythmics. But still, what she will do next, this pales...

Beautiful music and always a pleasure to listen to Amy whainehouse and a lot more RnB focused

Incredible talent, but nothing on this album really stuck with me.

Solid voice but most songs feel sameish

alright

I liked this. Amy had such a soulful voice and the production is great. her voice was one of a kind. It is not strictly my sort of genre but i appreciate it.

I’ve always known Amy Winehouse was a great singer who died tragically, but I’ve never listened to her music before. I really enjoyed the jazz and soul spirit of the album and her singing was pretty good, but I found some of the lyrical content to be quite shallow. Overall, it was a good album and I can see myself returning to a few of the songs, but I probably won’t be returning to the entire album again.

I do like Frank

I've heard Back to Black and I think I expected more from this on that basis? Nice production, but definitely something produced a little while before her peak. 3*

No doubt, Amy had a great voice but it is a bit much over the duration of this LP.

A charming debut from a singer who clearly had the voice, wit, and presence to become a star — though tragically, she couldn’t fulfill that destiny, becoming more famous for tabloid headlines than for her immense talent. Somehow, 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘬 sounds more natural and effortless than 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬, but Amy’s voice hadn’t yet fully matured into the powerhouse it would later become. A promising, honest record that showcases her unique personality and hints at the greatness she sadly never had the chance to fully explore.

Winehouse could sing a phone book and sound great. Her vocals are expressive and spot on. However, the lyrics of this album made me feel like she was singing her diary. It was angsty twenty something accounts and it struck me as whiny. Her style and vocals are a 5, but I don’t care to listen to these lyrics so a 3 for me. This is the second album from her in my first time p and I have the last one a 4. I guess I’d say it was more mature.

Excellent voice, solid production with engaging music. I felt uninspired by the lyrics and renditions at times. Overall a solid album.

Not as good as back to black but still solid

Like the hits

Delightful to hear all the potential, and her joy at singing.

Listened to it in the car driving to Fredriksborgs slott. Don't think I enjoyed the individual tracks as much as I was impressed by the way it transformed the car to a jazz bar. That's always something.

Let me be Frank... I listened to this.

Amy Winehouse music is like kind of interesting and unique i feel like ? she def is a very distinct musician but i don't quite understand why she has such a stronghold on cultural discourse... i suppose besides the fact that she had a very troubled and tabloid heavy life the music is not like so unique or life-changing ... anyways the two albums are good but i kinda find her oeuvre unremarkable

A bit too mainstream pop music, still ok

Decent I thought the songs sounded pretty good though not my style.

Just okay. Nothing incredibly inspiring, nothing to hate on. Enjoyed it but forgot almost everything about it already

A treasure and an icon. There's some real bangers on this album but it does tend to get repetitive after awhile.

Such a voice even on her debut! And she sings of her own doom.

Lounge hop just isn't my jam

Not for me but I can see the appeal. Might do another play through in the future

Great vocals but bored without a stand out song

good but i was unfamiliar with any of these songs and nothing stood out

This type of music is generally Not My Thing so this is easily the most I've ever heard of Amy Winehouse, but yeah her talent is pretty undeniable here. She's got range, she's got attitude, she's got a unique point of view. The production's nice too, there's some modern touches but mostly seems like pretty traditional jazz/soul, without the pop lens that Mark Ronson brought to her music later on. "(There Is) No Greater Love" has its own vinyl cracking sounds which is a little on-the-nose. "In My Bed" has this spacey boom-bap thing going on, and I cocked an eyebrow when I saw how long it was but it really works as a centerpiece to the album even though it really only has two parts. My main nits are that the songs are not super strong hook-wise (the melody of "Fuck Me Pumps" got annoying) and a few too many songs reach the 4-minute-plus range for my liking. But yeah I see why people were so excited about her and why so many singers mention her as an influence still. I would imagine if vocal jazz is your thing then you might consider this a No Skips type of album.

Not familiar with her but see why she was popular. Has a sound to her that could be from the old days. Decent but won't rush back to listen to it.

Cool stuff. Great debut.

Bold and brassy, but not my cuppa.

Not prefect by any means but you can see the beginning of something here. Back to black just blows this out of the water and it's hard not to compare. 3*

nice! im not gonna lie ive never listened to any of her songs but theyre so so jazzy/rnb n they remind me a ton of lauryn hill and i fw it a lot! i need some time to let this sink in a bit but my favorite as of this listen is help yourself, i just love the melody a lot + that descending 50s sounding wind instrument in the chorus!!!

Neo soul with jazz elements and in places hip hop beats. No doubt about AW's vocal skills. And the stripped back instrumentation is nice. Not really a AW fan but I can appreciate this Best track - Stronger than Me, Fuck Me Pumps, What is is About Men, Amy Amy Amy Almost 4 stars but not quite my taste

good and thoroughly well put together, but a little bit flat and lacking in the emotion a lot of what she's throwing back to excels at deserves to be one of the 1001? maybe. probably not as much as Back to Black

A great collection of songs

Intro / Stronger Than Me - 5/5 You Sent Me Flying / Cherry - 5/5 Know You Now - 3/5 Fuck Me Pumps - 5/5 I Heard Love Is Blind - 4/5 Moody's Mood For Love... - 3/5 (There Is) No Greater Love - 3/5 In My Love - 5/5 Take The Box - 4/5 October Song - 4/5 What Is It About Men - 2/5 Amy Amy Amy - 2/5 Outro - no rating Brother - 3/5 Mr. Magic (Through The Smoke) - 4/5 Average score: 3.7/5 (rounding down) i've never been crazy about Amy Winehouse in general, but i was pleasantly surprised by this. i only knew of her mainstream hits (Back to Black era) prior to listening to this album, and after hearing Frank all the way through, i think i prefer the jazzy vibes i heard here. it's sad she's no longer with us, she clearly had tons more potential this would get 3.5 stars with other rating scales, but i'll give it 3 here

Oh, Amy. I’ve dabbled in her catalog, but haven’t listened to this full album before. As a concept, I think I’m really interested in early 00’s HipHop/R&B lyrics sung over classic jazz (sometimes leaning bossa nova?) instrumentals. For the most part, the frankness of the album doesn’t rise to a level that would get Amy canceled today, but Stronger Than Me sets a problematic(tm) early tone and casts a slight shadow over the rest of the album. In any case, it’s no wonder that the world took notice of Amy here. A 19 year old who ‘writes it like it is’ and then tells you about it with pipes like these is certainly someone to take notice of, and the classic instrumentals make sure she doesn’t get overlooked in a semi-crowded early 00’s Pop/R&B space. If I zone out the lyrics a little bit, the vibes are great for a cocktail hour album, except that it’s difficult to unwind when I’m being called a ladyboy, or gay, for having feelings. Maybe Amy’s views on that would have softened by now if she was still with us. We can hope, but we’ll never know.

13/06/2025 This was not one of her better albums.

I love Amy but this wasn’t my favorite album.

No es mi fav de amy pero me molo

Nonessential if you ask me. It's a nice album, but it's so subdued compared to what came next.

Very talented artist. Good sound. Songs aren’t for me.

F me Pumps! 😂

Inspired a generation of women to sing like the ghost of Billie Holliday. Not sure if that's a good thing to be honest.

There's a jazzy feel to some of these tracks that I enjoyed. Her voice is--was--a very versatile instrument.

Good album. Solid outing. Missed it the first time ‘round.

me gusta su voz pero el estilo de musica suyo no es mi fav. lo he usado para pintarme las uñas jeje.

not bad, i wouldn't go searching for it. However, i will listen to it without any issues if it's playing in the radio

Solid if not sober

It's good. Not great, but good. Not too jazzy, more croony. More modern twists on the genre. Easy three.

This sounds like an artist still developing a bit. It’s mostly just her riffing over so-so jazz and r&b backing tracks. Fuck Me Pumps is a fun track and hilarious. I feel like this may be an influence on Frank Ocean but I’m not sure.

"Congrats on her 17 years sober!" - Rob. What a thing to say!

This is good and her talent is clear but she hits her stride on back to black.

I'm an Amy fan, but Back to Black is much better. 3/5 Album 74/1001

Frank is one of those albums where I can recognize the talent and the unique voice, but it just doesn’t click with me. Amy Winehouse clearly had something special, and the jazz style is well-executed, but for whatever reason, I find myself feeling disconnected from it. It’s not bad by any means, and I can understand why people admire it, but I must be missing something. None of the tracks really pulled me in, and it left me more indifferent than inspired.

No strong feelings either way with this one… probably won’t seek it out again but it was decent enough to listen theough

There's no doubting the quality of her voice, the problem is that it's just not my style of music - I'm just not a fan of this type of Soul / R&B / Jazz music.

Back half was better

I like Amy’s music and was familiar with over half is this album, that was predominantly the good half, the other half was a young singer trying to find her footing. It wasn’t bad, it was actually kind of enjoyable to hear the roots of what was to come (the good and the bad, sadly). It was Amy in rawest form. I had Back To Black about 5 or so albums ago, and the growth she has between these 2 albums is amazing. She truly blossomed into a wonderful artist. All that said, this album was mediocre in the grand scheme of things. I mildly understand why it would be on this list; for purposes of showing a talent is the rough, for the juxtaposition of growth. But it doesn’t seem qualified to be a member of the club - maybe in towards the back of the line to get in the club, but not a member. And I think Back To Black fully deserves to be in the club. 6.8/10 #54/1001

The highs are nowhere near as high as those on Back To Black, but I prefer the sound of the “filler songs” on Frank a slight bit more. I still don’t prefer Frank, but it’s really not that far behind.

You sent me flying, Amy Amy Amy and Mr Magic are the only good songs on this album

3 sterne

Not as good as back to black.

It's pleasant, not sure if too much special. I've expected more from the hype.

Nice album but didn’t love it.

Would give it a 3.5 but since it's not an option, leaning more towards 3 than 4

It was ok. She’s incredibly talented

She had an amazing voice, this was a good album!

Solid debut record, the songwriting isn’t as memorable as the following record Back to Black but the performances from Amy are just as solid. Feels like listening to a generational talent find her bearings on the open mic, smooth jazz circuit.

I had previously heard of Amy Winehouse but was not familiar with any songs on this album. I enjoyed it for the most part. It's pretty smooth and her voice is great. Some of the songs are better than others, my favorite of which might be Help Yourself is not even available on Spotify in the US. I would listen again, but probably would have to be in the mood for it.

Stunning vocals from Amy, however, the songs don't really do it for me. 6/10

Very good but no tracks made me save them to the playlist. but great vibes to put on in the background with deeper lyrics if you listen closely. Will be returning to this one soon.

Solid album. She has a really great voice, shame I haven't really listened to her stuff other than her more popular hits. That being said the album wasn't anything super special

Who is this Frank guy? Pretty decent. I liked the 🎷

Specific vibe. Liked some

Confieso que ni sabía que existía este disco. Conozco el super famoso de Winehouse y me gusta, pero con todo y que el género me gusta y ella canta genial, nunca he conectado mucho con su música. Cosa mía, supongo.

Decent, interesting mix of soul, R&B, Jazz and hip hop influences

Ah wow didn't know there was another Amy Winehouse album, very cool.

Not bad, but it's no Back to Black

A bit rough raound the edges. Masively overshadowed by Back to Black. 2.5/5

Vocals strong, lyrics sharp, music often struggles to keep up (first half sounds a bit Topshop wallpaper in places). Second half (from track 7 onwards) uniformly excellent. Wears influences on sleeve, to good effect, only rarely slips into pastiche. Postscript: hidden tracks ‘Brother’ and ‘Mr Magic’ too good to be tucked away at the end; should have been given more prominence. 6.5/10

it's nice, her voice is very nice, but the album itself wasn't anything crazy

Bright with a cool groove throughout.

I like Amy, Amy, Amy, and What is it about men. I actually listened to the album twice by accident. Some numbers I could not care less, while other numbers are nice.

The arrangements aren’t really my fav on here, but it’s nice to hear her before she reaches her full potential on Back To Black

.5 .5 .75 .5 .75

Nice soothing jazz feel, eeffoc music, 6/10

I've always appreciated Amy's talents as a songwriter and vocalist, but her music in an album format never really does it for me. If Amy is anything, it's insanely consistent, and after 50 or so minutes, I feel like I've seen everything she has to offer on a particular record. Well, I guess maybe that's par for the course for vocal-jazz dating back to the '50s. And while the more classic, throwbacky moments suit her well here (I really liked the slower 'There Is No Greater Love'), the more contemporary R&B-leaning production on some of these songs doesn't mesh well with her style, in my opinion. That's not the case for every song that goes in this direction, of course - the longer 'You Sent Me Flying/Cherry' has this serene piano-led instrumental that sort of reminds me of something Nujabes would produce. The psychedelic 'What is It About Me' was another late album highlight that sort of goes in a more modern "wa-wa" guitar direction. Cool artist. But I think this album is just too much of one very well-done sound. It's the type of album that'll take a while to grow on you and for each song to develop its own identity. But as for a first listen, I can't say I enjoyed every moment of this.

Had never listened to this album. She has one helluva a voice, but I didn't like the songs as much as her later stuff. More jazz club vibes. Still enjoyable just to listen to her sing.

Really unpolished. It’s her first album and it shows. Good music bad vocals

Like a jazz club. Good session players

Som å gå inn på et utested i en ordentlig noir-film. Kurant nok mens man lager branntegninger. Havner ikke på noen spillelister p.t. :)

Its ait

More meh than I expected. Maybe even 2.5?

Some ok songs.

Amy had a perfect voice and she will be forever missed. That being said, this album was not for me: Standout track: - Take The Box (4/5) the only song I really enjoyed Side note: the lyrics in Stronger Than Me are INSANE

A little slow for my tastes but a total vibe. Grilling to this album goes so hard.

Her debut album! Although there's no doubt that her voice is amazing, I can't say I'm in love with the affect she uses at times. "What Is It About Men" is easily my favorite song on the album. I'll be excited to listen to Back to Black when we eventually get there.

not huge about it but that is fine

Not really my style but she was definitely talented!

Great debut from a talented artist.

Tässä kuuluu hurmaavasti nuoruus, tulkitsemistaidosta puhumattakaan. On tarinaa, on hauskoja kikkoja.

Espero que Back to Black esteja nessa lista tbm.

Would never have guessed she'd go onto make an album as classic as Back to Black four years later. I appreciate why this is beloved, but this kind of 90s inspired neo-soul isn't really my thing.

Gute Produktion, gute Stimme, aber nichts was mich vom Hocker reisst. Ich würde auch lieber die alten Originale hören.

Listenable, but not nearly as solid or engaging start-to-finish as Back to Black.

Soul, bluesy, sultry

Maybe not as refined as the follow up, but a strong debut. Great singing obviously.

Not realy my thing

Back To Black is a clearly superior album. But Amy Winehouse's debut is still a solid effort with raw emotion in the vocals, although the lyrics sound odd coming from a 19 year old. She lived hard and fast and was taken from us too soon. 3⭐️

i love her voice and the kind of music she creates but i think i’d probably prefer some of her other albums

It's a decent album, 3/5. I like the sound in a general sense, but don't necessarily pursue this type of music often. Sad that she's gone.

This album was solid. Amy Winehouse is soooo talented and died wayyy too soon. Her debut album, everyone says isn't as polished as her later work, so I'd love to check out some other stuff by her. It obviously isn't something I normally listen to, but it was great and is probably my favorite jazz album so far. "What Is It About Men" was soooo catchy. Actual Rating...3.5. Liked Songs: "You Sent Me Flying / Cherry" , "I Heard Love Is Blind" , "Moody's Mood For Love / Teo Licks" , "(There Is) No Greater Love" , "In My Bed" , "What Is It About Men" , "Mr Magic (Through The Smoke)"

Great singing but the songwriting is not as mature as Back to Black which is unquestionably her best album

Nice album. Once again not the catalog choice I would have made though.

Good change of pace, alright

Very cool

Ile można przeżyć w tym wieku, Jezu. Przyjemnie się słuchało, ale wątpię żebym wracała do niej w przyszłości.

Really talented but not for me that much.

Loved it - beginnings of her signature sound

Solid album for the genre. Why I didn't hate it nothing made me want to hit repeat.

Definitely enjoyed this but I didn’t recognize many of the songs. Some felt a little over the top but it was good. 3.5/5

In the car with my son listening to this. Hear the lyrics: “…rockin’ your eff me pumps…” And I’m like oh my! Look at the name of the song on my screen…double oh my! Not sure if he saw it or not but fortunately I didn’t get any questions about what that particular phrase means. Anywho…this was good…not great.

This is a good album but I doubt it’d be on this list if she was still with us and making music. F**k Me Pumps is cheeky and fun. Prob my favorite of the album. 3.5/5

It's a shame Amy's voice became the victim of many, many poor imitations.

Alright Amy, you are starting in a hole with a nod to Sinatra and the lyrics on Stronger Than Me expressing a phenomenally shitty sentiment. I Heard Love Is Blind is a funny song. Her talent is undeniable, especially with her fast soul scatting through her passagios on Moody's Mood For Love/ Teo Licks.

Excellent for in a hip coffee bar in London

What's not to love about her voice? But I feel about this just as I feel about an album of jazz covers by Rickie Lee Jones - very nice, but not what I'm here for.

It's very hard to listen to this objectively, as Back to Black is so much better. But I can imagine being impressed with her in 2003 even if these songs aren't great.

it's kind of shameful to say, but i've never been a huge fan of amy winehouse...but i admit that i liked this album. 3.5

I've been a big Back to Black fan since it came out, but I never really delved into Frank. I liked it but didn't love it. It had plenty of moments, but I didn't connect to the jazzier sound like I did the darker, bigger sound of Back to Black. Fuck Me Pumps is fantastic though. She really took that lady down a peg. Other favorites: What is it about Men, Amy Amy Amy Album cover: (B) 2003 you say?

Amy Winehouse has one of my favorite voices of all time. I've listened to Back to Black a thousand times, but Frank only a few times. Mark Ronson didn't produce this but there's already a lot of wind instruments. "Fuck Me Pumps" is a funny song and had a great melody. "In My Bed" is great energy. "Amy, Amy, Amy" has great lyrics and vocals. I liked this album, but I didn't love it. It's got awesome vocals and great instrumental backing, but it's missing something. She finds that something between now and Back to Black. 6/10

🎧Pretty neutral on this. Winehouse was a real talent which is already fairly apparent on her debut, but the songs aren’t anything particularly special. That changed on Back to Black.

Solid but eclipsed by back to black

Nicht mein Lieblingsalbum von ihr

Amy was an incredibly talented writer and gifted singer, but this album doesn't do much for me.

Really enjoyed her style, not exactly my favorite genre but it was clear she is talented

I love Amy. I haven't listened to Frank, I don't know why? In my mind it's because she didn't like it and felt it wasn't true to her, so that's why I just never bothered to do it. Fucked up on my part for sure. I enjoyed this album! It's way more lounge-y and r&b than the more pop/throwback 60s vibe her second album had. No one can sing like Amy and this album proves that still, however many years later, there isn't anyone who sounds like this. I started listening to it on speakers and then switched to headphones because I was listening while making dinner and I wanted to be sure to appreciate it. Appreciate it I did. I don't know if I will return to it or not though.

Back in 2003, it was a fairly average album. But it was already clear that Amy was a unique vocalist and a unique personality. If someone didn't understand this in 2003, then even Macy Gray ;) understood it with the release of the album Back to Black. My favorite tracks from this album are October Song and Take The Box.

Totally expected to not care much for this, and then the thirty second or so intro seemed to back that up. But after that I was very surprised at how much I liked this album.

nice sweet and dat smooth bass

As much as I love Amy this album just didn’t know as much for me as I thought it would

Lounge Music

Heard it before. It's a sweet album but I prefer Back to Black 3/5

Decent, I liked the vocals. Kind of long and got bored by the end though.

6/10 - I see the appeal her voice is amazing but it just is not for me.

Easy listening but a snooze

Back to Black is a 5/5 - a great album where all songs could be standalone singles, but work together flawlessly. This album was more exploratory. You could tell she was younger, still figuring things out. I appreciated that aspect of this album, but wasn't my favorite of hers.

Has some good moments, very impressive for a 19 year-old, but she’s not fully formed here. I had never listened to this album and I was surprised at how heavy the hip-hop/neo-soul direction was. Interestingly enough, the more retro sound of her next album comes across as much more distinctive and original.

If you love R&B, soul, and jazz there is a lot for you here. This didn’t quite hit my tiny bullseye for these genres but I recognize the talent and performance quality here.

It is immediately apparent that Amy is an incredibly talented artist. She has great range, style, presence, and seems so comfortable as she effortlessly moves through the tracks of the album. At the same time, there is a bleak anxiety to the album. Despite the confidence in Amy's voice, there is a dark undercurrent of a troubled character. Even if you don't consider all of the controversy surrounding the artist herself, the tracks point to an empty, dark, and doomed worldview that leaves you concerned more than entertained.

Very samey. Great voice. Cool vibe. I was bored after 2 of them.

The drum sounds date what would otherwise be timeless music. Great voice.

stronger than me- 5 you sent me flying- 5 know you now- 5 fuck me pumps- 5 i heard love is blind- 4 moodys mood for love- 5 no greater love- 5 in my bed- 6 no more

Had a little listen. Promise of better things to come. Totally eclipsed by Back to Black.

Already familiar with this album. Never really taken to it as much as Back to Black.

Amazing voice but this album didn’t feel so memorable. Very listenable.

Wish I could give it 3.5 as 3 isn't enough but it wasn't quite 4. Nice album, had it on for ages.

Awesome.

Wenn man sich drauf einlässt so gut. Man muss sich eben nur drauf einlassen, das geht nicht immer.

I wish I liked this Jazz stuff more. I think I would’ve of enjoyed a live show. I’d love a live show now with Zombie Amy Winehouse but I really need the setting to like this.

Damn, it’s like she was born heartbroken. Good for a debut

I have listened to this album a few years ago she had a great voice. Most of the songs are very similar and nothing stands out but it's not unpleasant and a great album to chill out to on a Sunday morning or while working from home

Needs another listen. Definitely doesn't have the range that back to black has but there were some really good tracks on there

good lounge voice

Not bad.

good lounge style voice

A stepping stone to the even greater Back to Black.

Some solid bluesy tunes but not smth I'd listen to much Song picks Take the box

I've been huffing on air duster all morning in preparation for this one. Amy Winehouse is overrated. I think a lot of her popularity stemmed from her extremely healthy, teetotal, stable lifestyle that generated headlines due to her very positive influence on the youth and good natured, pacifist, go-getter attitude. I won't deny that this woman was an extremely talented musician when she wasn't spending all of her time looking into the mirror, but her voice really does get tiring after 30 minutes of listening to it. All the songs sound kinda-samey. This record is more consistently good than Back to Black is (where half the songs suck, and the other half were really good), but I still don't really find her music to be all that interesting. Still, nothing on here was inherently bad, and I'd completely understand why some people would adore this album. Can't fault it for being anything except somewhat boring and a 'one-trick pony'.

I guess you could characterize this as a bit of a 'safer' album than Back to Black as I wouldn't classify it as having as much downside as Back to Black, but this kinda makes it feel less memorable as a result. I imagine this might be part of why the album was removed from later editions of the 1001.

Album structure is Like Mid Masterpiece Mid 7/10 Fav tracks - Fuck Me Pumps, I heard Love is Blind, Moodys mood for love

Really do love her voice. It may sound contrived, but she just did it so well.

"Fuck me pumps" is actually good and fun Amy has a special voice and the vibe of the album feels chill and relaxed.

Not terrible. Shouldn’t be on the list though

Standout Tracks: - In My Bed

Refreshing piano, sax, and good beats. Very warm sound and good production. Amy's soul filled voice is timeless. I liked this album way more on my second listen.

I don't really like this song because I don't like what type of music it is. I feel like it's an old type of song and I don't like that.

3 I like it a little 3 its good 2 I don't like the vibe

I thought is was okay. I didn't like "You sent me flying" that much because it was kind of slow and had a jazzy feel. I felt the same way about "Take the box" I don't think they are bad, I just don't listen to this kind of music that much. I liked "October song" the best out of all of them because it was faster and more upbeat.

She has a great voice, but the music and the singing style are completely derivative. The lyrics are certainly edgier than the originals the music emulates. I enjoyed most of the first half but it really lost me in the second half (after In My Bed, which I liked). Favorite Tracks: Moody's Mood for Love (very derivative, but it caught my attention), In My Bed (cool sounding track), Amy Amy Amy (catchy track, but I wonder if the teacher constantly got "Don't Stand So Close to Me" stuck in his head...).

I'd never listened to this and I think I'm spoiled on Back to Black. A lot of the tracks sound like a demo/leadup to that to my ear (basic 2000s hip hop drums over jazzy chords and melodies). Some vibes on here for sure tho.

En 3 stjerners start på en 5 stjerners karriere

Great vocals obviously but I wasn’t crazy about the songs nor the songwriting.

The second Amy Winehouse album this project has bestowed upon me. Let's say returns are diminishing.

Лучше, чем Back to Black. Записан до 20 лет Aware Лучшая песня - In My Bed.

At first listening, I prefer Back to Black (the 2nd album). Still, I listened to the whole album and might do so again. 3/5.

1. Amy on Frank compared to BiB are w different singers 2. That this came out when she was 19, reality TV was curating talent and she had 3 labels fighting over her!! It's nice to hear some AW that isn't the overplayed singles the UK was plagues with. Good effort

songs were either great or slow

It was decent tbh
