Tandon Scale Rating: 4 Standouts: Fuck Me Pumps, Stronger Than Me, October Song, In My Bed, Mr Magic Foot Notes: 1 Amy’s voice is incredible and incredibly unique 2 This one was tough to pick a playlist pick Would I Listen Again: this is a great night driving listening album Album Cover Rating: (1-5) 1
Youre kidding me. Song 2 and I am absolutely blown away. The clearness of the voice, the complexity of the lyrics, the simplicity. I feel like it has aged fantastically. Feels like I should have this on at a dinner party. Favorite Songs: You Sent Me Flying/Cherry, There is No Greater Love I’m not sure what could make this a 5.
We lost such a talent... And I'm not even fan of this genre.
Amy sempre um banger love is a losingggg game
First time hearing this album. Didn't meet my expectations; despite the modern beats and approaches, this is truly a jazz vocalist's album. Interesting layered arrangements. Enjoyed it.
Jazzy
fantastic!
More experimental and innovative than you think. Explores some really interesting textures and pays respect to various jazz classics. A new open door for the new soul genre.
Fantástico
Dat Amy Winehouse een dijk van een stem heeft wisten we natuurlijk al. Verder knalt het album niet echt.
Opening song is STRONG. I've known of Amy Winehouse since she first released music but never listened to any full albums. Fuck Me Pumps has a really good groove, had me doing the head bop I always do when I'm really into a song. Overall a very nice album to listen to.
Love the Jazzy vibe mixed with the sassy lyrics. “At least your breasts cost more than hers”.. Gone too soon.
Amy, Amy, Amy There was only one. Miss you forever girl.
Fantastic modern RnB.
Really enjoyed this
Remarkable voice & style
Förvånansvärt bra.
Große Stimme. Sehr entspannte Musik. Perfekt mit einem guten Wiskey am Kaminfeuer
After only one listen I really feel like this could be a 5 in the future... How can every song be so good?
Sadge
Her voice is amazing.
Jazzy and with the right amount of edge. Super solid listen. I could use a bit more horns, but the way it's used sparingly lets Amy's incredible voice be front and center the entire time.
What a talent. Like a female Chet Baker. Really tragic how many more years of music she could have made.
Surprised just how much I adored this record for not being much of an R&B head. A pretty incredible debut Strong 4 stars.
nice listen
This album is a glimpse into what was to come. Back To Black is obviously a great album. Great songs, great use of the killer grooves from The Dap Kings. Frank, though an entertaining listen, is more scattered sounding. I always dug this album for having more of of Amy's guitar playing on it. It has a cool mix of jazz and neo-soul. Haven't actually listened to this one in years. Holds up well, and such a shame.
Amazing opening of an album, starts to deift by the second half. Amazing lyricist , amazing voice, the production is sometimes a bit repetitive
My favorite female singer. In My Bed and Fuck Me Pumps. Ez 4.5
Very good, great voice and love the smooth jazz style. 4.5
I enjoyed listening to this but it doesn't surpass Back To Black.
Another really good album, the style of singing is so passionate that you get drawn into the song even when only half listening. Rated down only the basis that a couple of tracks aren't quite as good as the others but if 4.5 was possible I'd give it
Im stricketh, sometimes I think her voice sounds nice and then sometimes it borderline goofy & annoying. The hand against ear rising and falling pitch type of singing gets really old really fast. Some of the lyrics are… explicitly cringe, like the female comedian trope of just talking about vaginas. But then some lyrics are rather nice and you wouldn’t ever guess that the previous song was about mentally cheating on someone by imagining their partner is someone else. The songs I enjoyed the most were the slower jazz/soul backing tracks while the more pop/r&b tracks sounded a lot more generic. With all that said the background music was pretty much chef’s kiss for the entire album. I actually ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. 7.5/10
Right amount of jazzy, right amount of blues but ultimately felt like it took a little too long. What a voice, though.
Quand j'ai découvert l'album, j'étais trop heureux, même si j'écoute plutôt "Back to Black".
I thought Amy Winehouse was poppier than this, so this was a very pleasant surprise of an album. Liked quite a bit of it. Some songs didn't really work for me, like Amy, Amy, Amy, but most were pretty good. Awesome voice, better than expected music.
I enjoyed this album. Though Back to Black is better. The first song was the most early 2000 song ever (read: mildly offensive). But the rest of the songs were good. Fuck me pumps of course being the best.
filled with power and subtlety.
More jazzy than her magnum opus Back to Black. Solid record.
Really good album, still don't like "Stronger Than Me" but every other song was fine
I love Amy. I hadn't listened to this record and I dig how jazzy it is.
Maybe not as catchy as back to black, but thoroughly enjoyable and clearly very accomplished.
Already listened to this artist before. Possibly the best female voice that the UK has ever offered. Great mix of jazz, hip-hop and R&B. Very great loss. Great upon relisten, but maybe overstays its welcome slightly. A couple of songs could have done with being about a minute shorter than they are. Amy Amy Amy is kinda eh. Otherwise very good.
Better than the hit album. Unknown with a clear vision. No beehive or tabloid bullshit. Look how healthy she looks on the cover. Listen to how much power she has in her voice.
I can't have my handle named after stano and not give his girl Amy at least a 4. Amy actually snapped here
I was a teenager when this album was popular, and considered it to mainstraim to get into it (I was a contrarian cool kid). However, this album has some amazing songs and lyrics. On top, it is extremely well produced, without eliminating the vintage atmosphere that Amy Winehouse radiates.
Fantastic sound and overall theme, they don't make em like they used to
Fun and funky
I think the production is underappreciated in amy winehouse's music, but her vocal ability adds a nice icing to the mascara running cake
Why have I never listened to Amy Winehouse? Shame on me. I could listen to this all day.
Was kind of meh for most of it. I think I’ll give it another listen
I listened to this in Sarf London, which surely helped right? And to be fair, it's extremely evocative. She packs so much personality into her voice and the lyrics are somehow both really light and incredibly dense. I didn't know this album as well as I know Back to Black, but I think that helped, because it forced me to listen rather than to have it wash over me as something you know well can.
Wow. Some surprisingly bad takes in that first song.
I have a specific preference in music and voice while listening to music. She might be the best but for me this isn't it.
I'm surprised I haven't heard more of Amy Winehouse before now. It's comfortably up my alley, and this album is something that I could listen to the whole way through again with no issues. Iconic voice, jazzy tunes, classic covers, not much more I could ask for here. Highlight: What Is It About Men Lowlight: Amy Amy Amy Surprise Hit: Moody's Mood for Love / Teo Licks
This album didn’t jam quite as hard as Back to Black, but the writing really kept my attention, and the jazz vocal runs were really fun to dissect.
Solid
I thought it was pretty good.
Beautiful - Back in Black is still my favorite, but it’s lovely to listen to Amy when the world hadn’t beaten her down yet. Miss her.
Cant argue against that voice!
I haven’t really made time to listen to any of Amy’s albums before and I was actually pleasantly surprised. While her music is not my usual style, I actually found a lot of the lyrics quite entertaining/downright funny. Fave track: Fuck Me Pumps (made me lol)
Enjoy
Good album from an good artist
Schönes Album, mit guter Lyrik, kann man sich gut geben.
Really 3.5 stars. Amy Winehouse but jazz. Kinda dragged on in the end but damn is her voice amazing
4.5 stars. I dig this. Beautiful voice but doesn't overdo it. Sensual but funny at times, honest and has attitude. Impressive debut, especially for a teenager. Music meanders from jazz to R&B to soul in a very listenable way. Standouts are "Fuck Me Pumps" and "Brother".
Lovely!
Cool to hear jazzy early Amy.
A classic. Love some Amy every once in a while, her music has such a unique groove. She's also a great vocalist, just an all around banger.
Great singing and nice jazz instrumentals. As with most music in this style, I wish the lyrics made for more than just love/breakup songs, but this still very good jazz pop.
I could definitely see the influence of Sinatra in both the music and her singing. I really like the juxtaposition of the "classy" jazz and blues with the "slutty" lyrics and themes. Fuck Me Pumps is probably my favorite example of that interplay.
Amy displays her amazing voice this whole album. I didn't feel like many songs stood out particularly, but it felt like an intimate hour inside Amy's head. With personal lyrics sung in a way only Amy could, over some jazzy and R&B soundscapes. Bouncing between giving this 3 or 4 stars. relisting making me want to give this 4. Something made me want to jump right back in after finishing it.
Very cool to hear Amy on the brink of greatness and getting her start with this album. Rip.
4/5 iconic. Lauren Hill, but make it dirty.
tasteful soul music with chill beats accompanying them -- previously only knew her 2 most famous songs which are good in their own regard. but this album shows real talent
Went into listening to this thinking I would not enjoy it. However, it was actually quite good. 4/5
Retro yet modern. Beautiful songwriting and performance from Winehouse. Only read dud for me was “Fuck me Pumps”. God we missed way too much good music with Winehouse’s heartbreaking passing.
Very atmospheric, but would rather just listen to Sinatra. 3.5/5.
Not in my edition of the book! 2003. 4 stars. One of the best debut albums ever made, and a perfect commentary on the early Millennium ladette culture. Great tunes, sharp lyrics, and THAT voice. What's not to like?
Muito bom!
10/10 Amy
top álbumes de la vida!!!
Good album. Often overshadowed by Back to Black. Wonder what she'd be doing today.
Gone too soon :-(
Yes
good 👍
Enjoyable album, liked the jazz vocals and instrumentation. Some ideas felt a little repetitive but Amy Winehouse is very talented and manages to make it enjoyable regardless. Favorites: Amy Amy Amy, In My Bed, Stronger Than Me, Take the Box Least Favorites: No songs I strongly disliked
Smooth
Highlights: Help Yourself, Amy Amy Amy
I'm gonna be Frank with you, I'm a sucker for Amy.
Classic
Low 4
Good but not golden in my opinion.
amy winehouse scatting is not something i knew i needed
i have to believe that as amy winehouse's debut, frank gets overlooked since her following album absolutely blew up the world in 2006. as someone who isn't a huge winehouse fan (but can appreciate her music), i was surprised how solid this album was. it's a shame frank didn't get as much attention in the US initially. amy's wheelhouse is in jazz, but gosh it's such a cool combination, with soul and r&b and hip hop. for a relatively short career, amy tells us exactly who she is in "fuck me pumps," and i love the strength in coming out of the gate with a song like that. while she's not the sole songwriter on this album, i found myself amazed at the power of the lyrics.
Amazing talent, right out of the gate.
How can you not enjoy that voice, and that sass.
Didnt listen all of it. Pretty neat.
Not normally my kind of music but it's an easy album with interesting lyrics, Fuck Me Pumps was a favourite
Sorry...she was 19 when she recorded this? 19?! Good God. Talk about a jazz vocal prodigy. This is the work of a singer who's honed their craft after 20-30 years. The pure talent here is almost distracting from the record as a whole. I think the songs are just fine. I'd happily put these on at a BBQ, or just for a chill night of drinks and hanging. Nothing in particular about the musical structure pops out here, and it's pretty safe production wise. But that's the only reason I don't give 5 stars here.
This is really nice. She has such a strong singing voice and sense of self for a debut at such a young age. I like the songs and style. It's very cool.
With no disrespect, how was this popular? It's so old school. Who was asking for lunge music in the early 00s? It blows my mind. But I love it. I never thought this would be something I'd ever list3n to but damn I'm glad I did. I saved the album and like 6 tracks. What a gem. I know Amy as a jok3 from shitty spoof movies of the 00s. Wild. This is 4*
I actually preferred this to Back to Black. If it was about 20 minutes shorter it would be close to perfect
I love Amy. She’s like the UK Lauren Hill. Iconic voice, combining multiple genres and styles into something that is uniquely hers. Plus, she’s a bad ass.
Another great album.
Deserves so repeat listens.
Love how the instrumentalists play very simply, taking a back seat to THAT V O I C E. I had fun
Shockingly easy to listen to. Good album. Original sounds.
Raunchy and odd in everything but equal parts, vocal brute force carries the record while lyrical rhetoric fails. Winehouse is magnetic and not always in attracting mode. Frank's an ageless debut; It's hard to pick songs as highlights, but it's far from one note. One soul behind it, though, that's sure.
Very good debut album. Not quite the highs of Back to Black but good songs.
Such a raw debut album. Whereas her second album had more bangers. This one was softer and more subtle. The modern jazz was beautiful and so was her singing, as always. The songwriting could be a little clunky in places, but were good for the most part. Enjoyed it. 4/5
3.9 Amy the Goat, always fan of an anti-man album Faves: Stronger than me, In my bed, Fuck me Pumps
Loved the feel of this album.
Excellent vocals and grit from a talented young woman taken too soon.
best album we've had (not saying much)
I didn't like this album quite as much as Back to Black, but it's still a very good album. There's just something so undeniable about her voice. It feels timeless. There's a lot of variety in the music as well, with some songs sounding modern and others have more of a classic sound 4/5
Amazing voice.
Jazz, R&B. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Hard to compete with her more famous Back to Black, but even at this point in her career Winehouse’s vocals are excellent.
One of a kind and timeless.
I haven’t given her enough airtime. This was dark at times, but I loved the music and her voice. Will listen again
Good stuff, although not quite my scene
Enjoyed this more than expected.
I appreciated the blues/R&B/jazz elements and I always thought that style of music was being forgotten to time (as in if it wasn't "in" or popular anymore). It was also refreshing to hear more about a female's perspective on different facets of life as opposed to my usual male-dominated rock music .
This album is great, very nearly a 5 for me and I can't quite put my finger on why not.
Listened before and I recall enjoying it
This album has so much attitude. My quality of work skyrocketed while listening to F*ck Me Pumps. Funky. Bluesy. Love everything about this album. RIP.
Love the jazz instrumental. Beautiful voice. Definitely would listen again
I understand the hype around Amy Winehouse after this album. It's a great album, and listening to it early on a Sunday morning while making breakfast and coffee is a home run time to listen. This felt like a good R&B album with some jazz and soul thrown it; great combo. It didn't feel like this had highs and lows, it was consistently great from start to finish. Definitely reaching for more Amy after this.
Amy was such a badass RIP. This album sounds to me like a very unique style of rap that I've never heard before. I really liked the songwriting and lyrics. Glad I listened to the YouTube version rather than the "US Clean" version on Spotify mainly for Fuck Me Pumps I have never really listened to her but definitely will be now.
I bet Ev was wishing she was still doing this. F**k Me Pumps is a banger. Bassline in "In My Bed" slaps. Great vocals and very chill instrumentals. Great album overall.
I liked it but it made me sad
What a voice. I never got into her while she was alive, but after her death I started exploring her discography and wow I really wish I'd appreciated her more. Such a fun, eclectic mix of styles.
Album 42 of 1001 Amy Winehouse - Frank Favorite Tracks : Amy Amy Amy Rating : 4 / 5 Really enjoyed this. Makes you want to move your feet a bit. Awesome debut album. Signs of what was to come.
Wonderful! Such a great insight to this complex and talented woman. I started to lose track a bit near the end but it was still a great album.
original review got deleted so here’s a shorter version. drunk scatting to open the album is crazy. I really like the instrumental palette here, the dark bossa nova vibe is cool and the bass on “Stronger than me” is crazy. Lyrics definitely stand out on “I heard love is blind.” Comes across as very honest. In my Bed is an obvious banger, the instrumental really stands out here. At times I don’t love her vocal inflections on here. I appreciate this record, but if I’m in the mood I would rather listen to back to black. Cover art: 6/10 cool dog weird letter spacing
All the songs were a vibe. No huge standouts but it was consistently good especially the back half from In My Bed on. Realizing now my favorite might have been a bonus track cuz it’s after outro but the harmonies on brother were really cool. 👍: I’m my bed, take the box, brother
That opening track has been a favorite of mine for a while. On track 3 now and man she is good but the production is really what’s grabbing me. These all create such a specific upbeat energy It’s a bummer then Winehouse wasn’t a fan of this album. But that tracks with the mistreatment she faced by practically everyone in her life. A king pleasure cover bruh?? Winehouse is goated. This album could easily be a 5 for me but I’m going 4 outta respect for her 💯
Not every song is groundbreaking, but thanks to her (not even at its peak yet) voice, everything sounds great.
Anytime I've heard Amy Winehouse -- a song of hers, a video or audio recording of a performance, etc. -- I'm always in awe of her voice and her performing talent. Something about her is just so compelling to my ear, and it is great to hear this album (her debut album) all the way through for my first time. Wow. Absolutely brilliant. I need to listen to more of her albums.
Absolute banger of an album. The guitars are gorgeous. Some of the tracks in the last third are a bit weaker but this is an amazing album.
Great debut album! Moody's Mood For Love was really cool.
I listened to this album while doing a puzzle online with friends and honestly it added to the vibes. I've listened to a couple songs by Amy Winehouse but not anything from this album.
Very solid and souly!
Jazz, R&B. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
I’ve never listened to this before, my experience of Amy Winehouse is limited to her chart success and her second album. Whilst this isn’t exactly mainstream Amy Winehouse, it is a pure version of her voice, I personally think that the second album in comparison shows her declined with drink and drugs Far more. Whilst she was alive and constantly in the news for her drink and drug antics, she wasn’t an artist that I was particularly keen upon, having listened to her retrospectively, I do like her voice, and had she managed to clean herself up, I’m convinced that She would’ve had massive success
Tentative rating, but... I liked it.
Læææækker soul/rnb, vanvittig stemme
A gorgeous album in many ways, she has such a wonderful voice and the music is so expressive and beautiful. I did find it a bit dated at points though, like 'fuck me pumps' was so judgemental!
Raw, unfiltered, telling her truths. The mix of latin, reggae and jazz influence was unexpected. Defining that new age of RnB. What is it about men is unreal.
Despite being her debut, this is the less listened to of her albums. I'm glad I got a chance to critically revisit it. I miss her.
I actually enjoyed this... Damn. This was pretty chill.
I have been very interested in Amy Winehouse because She's always been spoken so so highly of. She also has her biopic AMY out which has her in the zeitgeist again. I know Frank isn't normally the go-to Amy Winehouse album but this was still a really a great listen! I do quite like her voice. She truly uses it as an instrument which not every singer does. Frank pushes it into more Jazzy territory than I thought it would and honestly those are my favorite parts of the album. I'm very excited to hear Back to Black when it inevitably appears on this list. 4
Yupp
Not quite as strong as her next album, but there are so many great songs on here and it’s an incredibly assured debut from a ridiculously talented writer and performer
Liked this more than I expected tbh, swanky jazz vibes hit different on a Sunday arvo
Obvious tinge of sadness aside, one gets the feeling she had at least 8 more great albums in her. Just an incredible debut with serious Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone vibes. Some tend to focus on the sadness of what should have been, but we should instead appreciate the few moments she left for everyone to enjoy. My hunch is future generations will discover Amy Winehouse and hold her up with the Ella's and Nina's and even Billie Freaking Holiday.
It's Amy being Amy. Best track: Help Yourself
Decent 7/10
Reminds me a lot of adele. Liked a few songs a lot. Really liked the rhythm and beat of her songs.
Qué pena más grande! Conocer este disco después de que se hiciera famosa con el siguiente fue un impacto total. "Stronger than me"; "Know you now", "I heard love is blind", "(There is) no greater love", "October song" o "Help yourself". Discazo.
I've actively avoided Amy Winehouse's music for nearly twenty years (I think I just hate "Rehab"? Or maybe she reminds me of someone that I don't like? I'm not entirely sure to be honest), so this was my first experience with one of her albums. I really enjoyed listening to this. Amy's vocals are great, and while the songwriting might be 'juvenile' in a topical sense, I thought that the tracks felt really cohesive. "Fuck Me Pumps" might be the first jazz diss track that I've ever heard, and it absolutely ruled. I'm really looking forward to when I get assigned 'Back to Black.'
Not as impressive as Back to Black. However the unique voice with a unique point of view is there. Solid stuff.
- First time listening to this, not sure why I've never listened before because Back to Black is excellent - Also really good, not as good as Back to Black but not much is - Shame that she only has two albums - Fav songs: Fuck Me Pumps, Help Yourself, October Song
Super cool cross between AW’s old school soul sound that she’s most known for and the neo soul/R&B of the early 2000’s. Definitely an easy listening album but the songs are also sophisticated and fun so it’s got some real depth too.
Really enjoyed this one. As someone who honestly has not listened to much Amy Winehouse aside from the hits, I was pretty impressed with the musicianship throughout the album. Solid listen and would revisit it again.
4.5
Amys voice here is her best, before drink and drugs really took hold.
I'd never deliberately listened to Amy Winehouse before this. Very good. Saucy.
This was an excellent debut album. What a wonderful voice. It's not in the same league as Back to Black.
Love her voice. Super creative vocal style. Very expressive and clear lyrically. Great music especially more on the second half. Very easy listen for me, easy 4
I really like this album it has some absolutely amazing songs but is it as good as back to black, no and is this album a bit too long, yes. 4/5
Another great album, her voice is fantastic and the songs are catchy
A current jazz album that has hints of the 40s
Her greatest triumphs were still ahead in her all-too-shirt life, but Amy Winehouse comes roaring out of the gate with a self-assured debut. Slinky, playful and sensuous.
Such potential.
I think the production is underappreciated in amy winehouse's music, but her vocal ability adds a nice icing to the mascara running cake
Production for the album took place during 2002 to 2003 and was handled --Commissioner Gordon.. MITÄ VITTUA???? LEPAKKO MIES REFERENCE!!!! mukavaa musiikkia. ensimmäinen puolisko vähän toistuvahko...jatsi influenssa... toinen puolisko riputtelee vähän musiikkimiehenä kiinnostavampaa laulua... lyyli osaa laulella...ymmärrän jos vituttaa hoilotus tyyli välillä, oikea mieli ala tänään... miehistä kertoo heh... huumeet... hehe.... if you’re 1,000 albums into the list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and this is the only one remaining, you could just as well go ahead and die... huonosta reviewstä ok hassuttelu kohta. yksinään kommentti olisi vituttanut mutta kun ensin mukaan tuli oikea arvostelu(vaikkakin paska sellainen) huumori kelpaa tällä kertaa, sillä hän laittoi sanoihin mitä usein tunnen in my bed
The album title, "Frank," allegedly is partially in tribute to Frank Sinatra, who was among Amy Winehouse's many anachronistic influences. But it could just as easily refer to her frank manner - unreserved, unedited, direct, candid, and open. The result of that frankness in her music was a breath of fresh air, taking so many classic soul, R&B, and jazz sounds and melding them with hip hop and something just uniquely Amy. I'm not sure I ever listened to "Frank" before, though I feel like I know the more popular follow-up "Back to Black" well. It is immediately evident what Simon Fuller saw in her, though nothing on "Frank" soars to the heights reached later by "Rehab" and "Back to Black." That said, there is still a lot to like on "Frank," including Winehouse's talents as a songwriter in addition to her notable pipes. It's a voice that quickly became iconic, but I can't help but be left thinking that she doesn't always use it to its potential. I love that in addition to her 1960s influences she also loves Nas (enough to sample him on "In My Bed" and write a whole song about him on "Back to Black"). I love that she pushed boundaries and recoiled at the idea of doing things by the numbers. I hate that such an open and candid person had to turn to alcohol and drugs to feel comfortable performing on stage. And I hate that her brilliance, like Cobain and Hendrix and Joplin and Morrison and so many others, left us too soon to find out where their journey would take them next.
I'm super familiar with (and love) Back to Black, but strangely enough I've never listened to this album. I guess it's not that unusual really. This album is great, not as much of a cohesive masterpiece like Back to Black, but still excellent nonetheless. Amy was a rare talent and such a shame that she died so young. 4 stars.
Nice album but can definitely tell that it's a debut. Excellent vocals but no songs really jumped out at me as her later work did. 7/10.
Start of the legend
J’ai vraiment aime c’est un vraiment bel album trs bien produit av3une bonne artiste. 4.65
In my bed is ziek, sws goed blues album
I was super excited to dig into this one, because I know her big radio hits and have loved her voice, but never really dug much deeper. Thoughts are this -- she had a fucking incredible voice, but boy can you hear the life dissatisfaction in her lyrics that presumably led to her substance abuse. I love the jazziness, but there are a lot of gender assumptions and gender role acceptance that doesn't work for me in almost 2023 as it probably would have twenty years earlier. Stand outs for me: You Sent Me Flying, Fuck Me Pumps (which is very musically repetitive and catty as hell, but I like it in spite of that), and (There is) No Greater Love. Also, the UK version of the album has a cover she did of Someone to Watch Over Me, which is STELLAR.
Amy has such a unique character to her voice and lyrics. An incredible album for a debut and her oeuvre only improves on the next one.
3.5 Good but a little stale as it goes on. Like her later stuff more, for sure, but this was good.
Take as a given that Winehouse had a voice like no other - powerful sound, fragile frame and a personality which cast a spell. Read between the lines here and its a pretty bleak record, though, despite the upbeat soulful / jazz sound. She sings of toxic relationships and addiction cycles and to look back now one wishes we could have helped Amy get the support she needed. One fears a lot of enablers and exploiters in her life made matters much worse. I hope you're at rest now, Amy.
Voice has all of the ability that it does later, production is nowhere near what Ronson adds. Enjoyed the lyrics and the cheek, insane that she was 20.
Here we go, embarking on this challenge! First up, Amy Winehouse's debut, Frank. I love Amy Winehouse, hadn't ever heard this album all the way through before so I'm glad I got to listen to it! I feel like I should 100% be rating this higher but it is what it is. I just feel it in my gut to give this 8.5. Amy Winehouse's debut album is very strong. I'm a huge lover of this type of music, and she takes a lot of inspiration from jazz conventions. A particular highlight for me is October Song, her requiem for her bird Ava, and how she quotes the melody of Lullaby of Birdland in the chorus. Are you fucking kidding me?? Amazing. Amy's a powerhouse. What Is It About Men is one of my favourite songs of hers, was great to hear it in the context of this album. Overall I feel like I like Back in Black a little better than this record but this is still extremely solid and really fucking good. Fav tracks: Cherry, Know You Now, I Heard Love is Blind, October Song, What Is It About Men
oh Amy, why'd you have to do it?
overall 8.75/10 favorite track- fuck me pumps/october song
Très bien, même si je ne connaissqis aucune chanson!
Excellent album, unique, groovy lyrically raw and exciting, often incorrect in a way that appears honest or vulnerable. The music prefaces the new move to neo-soul but has some more guys behind it. The production is slightly dates now but wasn't it always? Her story is interesting and summons up a distinctive moment I history, and like with all real life tragic heroines highlights how the machinery of modern capitalism will commercialise your weaknesses until they eat you up. Still - very very good, if not wholly my bag.
Great album.

This is not my cup of tea, but a few things I enjoyed about this album: the cilled-out vibe. You can relax with this on in the background. There are some reallly cool textures to the music. Amy has amazing control over her voice and the emotion is raw and powerful. Unfortunely I cannot stand the articulation of the words themselves, and this is present in so much of pop singing that feels like it began in these early-2000s, but is still going strong today. Strong album overall, even if it's not my thing.
Loved much of it, and particularly “In My Bed.”
Love how bluesy and jazzy this album is compared to Back to Black. So much potential.
I was avoiding trying Amy Winehouse’s first album for years. TF for? I don’t mind it’s not Back to Black; it’s still great! There’s some gender keeping and homophobia in the first track that’s pretty cringy. Otherwise good stuff.
This didn't get enough recognition at the time. A fantastict album, you could just sense the talent and knew that she was destined for great things.
So warm, cozy, and soulful. Like a glass of wine in the solitary comfort of one's home. In short, it's Winehouse.
4 Good
I enjoyed this album. I've never really listened to Amy Winehouse so I feel like this was a good introduction to her music. Catchy and a little jazzy. Favorite song: In my bed Worst song: Fuck me pumps
favourite song: fuck me pumps least favourite song: take the box very very good.
Was able to listen to this again without thinking about everything good and (very) bad that came after. It was clear that Amy was a real talent, and I was looking forward to much more from her. A good album, but not a great one.
A beautiful voice that was quieted too soon. It's sad to listen to the emotion and biographical nature of this album and knowing how the story ends. Frank is a great album and would probably get a 5 from me in some alternate universe that Back In Black doesn't exist in. 4.5/5.
This album was a great listen! Amy had a beautiful voice, and was gone too soon!! A beautiful artist, with the ability to meld jazz with pop in a cohesive manner. The lyrics to the song Help Yourself ring true sadly: "I Can't Help You If You Won't Help Yourself". Favourite songs: Mr. Magic (Through the Smoke), Amy Amy Amy, Help Yourself, October Song, Fuck Me Pumps, You Sent Me Flying/Cherry Least favourite songs: Know You Now, I Heard Love Is Blind 4/5
Beautiful voice, jazzy beats and beautiful, genius lyrics.
I had never heard this one before - only her other hits. So this was quite the ear-opener. Now I see why so many consider her legendary.
Pretty good. No good is my favourite
Only Amy can make an album full of one song reorganised into several different and make say "You go girl"
4/5 Good jazz / funk album that I enjoyed a lot. She has a great voice and the vulnerability she puts on display throughout the album makes it feel very from the heart.
Really listen-to-able
Immediately I notice that this album plays into masculinity of a man and how often the men Amy sings of do not fit into this dynamic that she expects. Which, she often then has to fill herself. It’s a bit uncomfortable to listen to as society has moved on from these tropes, but I do think the transcendndence of this phenomenon can be seemed to stem from men not fulfilling the role for her specifically. It gets into sex and sexuality in a way that is for self pleasure and is a satisfying listen. Cherry is probably my favorite song.
Amy is great. Everyone knows that. But this is her debut, and that says something. It’s her right out of the gate, her best foot forward, and it’s spectacular. Absolutely incredible. Forever in our hearts.
One of a kind voice. Beautiful blend of jazz and soul.
Her voice is just so good. A mix of some dance and older style music but her range is just so good.
I loved the jazzy feel and her vocal abilities. I closed my eyes and felt like I was in a jazz lounge. Anyone that knows me knows that I'm a sucker for brass instruments so that definitely didn't hurt.
Spoko, ale Back to Black lepsza
I enjoyed returning to this old album, reminding me of who she was before superstardom destroyed her
Such a beautifully intimate record, and by that, I mean so real. It’s so real. I missed out on her for the most part, but this is telling me that I DID miss out.
After all the controversy and the headlines of this artist I never really paid attention to Amy Winehouse. Apparently this was a quote from her about this album... Some things on this album make me go to a little place that's fucking bitter. I've never heard the album from start to finish. I don't have it in my house. Well, the marketing was fucked, the promotion was terrible. Everything was a shambles. It's frustrating, because you work with so many idiots—but they're nice idiots. So you can't be like, "You're an idiot." They know that they're idiots". Not sure if she is right here, because if this was an album made by idiots, those idiots did a pretty damn good job.
This album shows off the potential for Amy Winehouse and leads to her artistic peak of Back to Black. Frank leads with a classic jazz sound, but it makes my wonder how Amy would feature on more contemporary hip-hop tracks. Too bad she left us so soon. Best Songs: Stronger Than Me, Know You Now, Take The Box Worst Songs: October Song
Ah Amy Winehouse. Ofcourse I have heard a lot of tracks from back to black. So it was really cool to listen to her debut. I enjoyed it a lot with the combination of jazz, soul and her vocals. 3.5/5
Amazing album. Not the biggest fan of her style but so genuine and real.
- I like Stronger Than Me musically, even though lyrically it's... the opposite of feminism - Vocally beautiful, like the trumpet break - You Sent Me Flying has amazing vocals - Fuck Me Pumps is a good song except if you listen to the lyrics. Slut shaming at its finest - I quite like the sound but I kind of hate her as a person now - I Heard Love is Blind is like "why are you mad I cheated on you, it's no big deal" - Monody's Mood For Love is nice, I like the saxophone (don't need Amy to sing) - I kinda like October song
I was aware of Amy Winehouse, but never really listened to any of her music. The album had a very jazzy feel to it and sounded like it would have been performed in a quiet lounge late at night. There were elements of R&B and hip hop throughout and Amy's voice was very captivating. She had an interesting vocal register, being a bit lower than a lot of other female vocalists and having almost smoky quality. This isn't the kind of album I would have sought out on my own, but I did enjoy listening to it.
Soul. Rhythm and blues.
7/10. Solid album, but I still don't quite like her singing style.
Quite good but there were a few misses/snoozers. Still love her voice and the general vocal jazz + R&B combo. 8/10
A very jazzy album from a talented voice and songwriter. Some great music on this album but my main issue is the Alicia Keys-like drumcomputer in some songs like You Sent Me Flying. Lots of songs could have shone a lot more with a better production. But I know that happened on the next album!
Amy's debut album compared to her follow up features a more contemporary R&B sound with trip hop influences, but there is still plenty of classic nuances present as well. Amy's voice sounded incredible even on here, and overall the album's a great time. Favorites: "Stronger Than Me", "You Sent Me Flying", "(There Is) No Greater Love"
Daydreaming about skull fucking Amy Winehouse is one of the best things you can do with your weekend. In many way it's easier now she's dead. I imagine her singing whilst I cum in her. She sounds heavenly.
Such an incredible talent with such a unique and powerful voice. Taken from us way too soon.
4.25
Her Back to Black album seems to get all the attention, and in fact I don't think I had listened to this one - but damn it cooks!
Amy's voice is the big seller here. This album was a harbinger for the true greatness that was to come with the next album, but this album holds its own as very good. 3.5/5
I first heard Frank in a wine shop. Which makes me sad. Not the booze and stuff, but because I was trying to become domesticated at the time (I failed), and for a while this became semiotic cue for all the things I foolishly wanted to be at the age of 30 whatever. I guess it was actively disliking Back to Black (I've gone back somewhat on this over the years) that nudged me into listening to this a little more carefully. Winehouse's voice here was subtle, delicate, abrasive, plaintive, brash...I wonder what a different set of producers might have made of her?
I don't know anything about Amy Winehouse and I must say this is a pretty impressive debut. Faves: You Sent Me Flying / Cherry, Fuck Me Pumps, In My Bed
Great
4 le faltaba producción
Girl that first song… 😒
04/21/2022 Pretty good
Liked it - 4 stars
Surprisingly jazzy! Not what I expected at all - I guess I only know her from her later stuff.... An engaging and enjoyable listen! Fave track - "Fuck Me Pumps" was great, and I guess the only one of these I'd heard before. Also enjoyed "In My Bed" and "Amy Amy Amy"
Having never heard a performance by Winehouse, I was kind of pleasantly surprised.
4/05/2022 Today's Album: "Frank" by Amy Winehouse - This is a fairly solid early 2000s singer song-writer and R&B record by the legendary Amy Winehouse, whom I had only known prior through a few hits. I think her voice is probably the best thing about this record. Not only does she have incredible technical ability in tonality and range, but she also brings a lot of personality to every line she sings. I like a lot of the bass and guitar grooves that are sprinkled across this album, with only a few songs feeling either boring or simply off/underdeveloped. I think my overall problem with listening to this is that Channel Orange was such a solid introduction into R&B music and although this album can be no considered bad, it just doesn't stack up within the R&B pop genre as anything less than a predecessor. Ironically, "Frank" (Ocean) ended up outdoing her. That being said, this is no album to simply shrug at and there is a lot of great material on this project. I like the sweet love song (There Is) No Greater Love and I think Cherry is a really funny interlude track where she confesses that she has feelings for another to her partner, but then admits the other person is her new guitar. I like the very fun and bouncy Amy Amy Amy and all of the other highlights listed are worth checking out if you like some great R&B and even greater vocal performances. Check this one out if Amy Winehouse has ever interested you before or you simply liked other R&B projects and want more. Score: 7.5/10 Pretty good, but dated by comparison Highlights: Stronger Than Me, Cherry, Fuck Me Pumps. No Greater Love, In My Bed, Take The Box, October Song, Amy Amy Amy, Brother, Mr. Magic
I'm glad she's in this journey! Have been curious what style she is... she could have been the Brit Lady Gaga!
Damn, she’s got swagger. The strength of this album isn’t really in the songs but her performance. Her voice is an elastic band and it’s fun to hear her play with it and riff on these melodies. She’s clearly having a lot of fun. On her next album, she’ll dial back the riffing a smidge and record some truly great songs. But this album captures her raw and unfiltered, doing some loose and jazzy numbers about love, sex and nightlife. The production oozes cool, balancing retro and modern styles, and provides a perfect stage for her to do her thing. Song after song she lets it rip and it’s a blast to listen to.
Pros: - One of the most evocative and romantic voices in popular music - This album is less in-your-face than Back to Black, and while I like in-your-face music, I appreciate the contrast in the two albums. This one is more romance from a positive light. - Lots of different \"feels\" on this album which I really appreciate. Cons: Misc: - The only con for me when listening to Amy is that I can't think of her without thinking of the word \"tragic\". I'm cursed. I think/hope in the future that will go away because I completely adore her and her music. To me it's like being a kid on Christmas day and getting the most fun video game console and a few games, but then after a week or so there aren't any new games released for that console. It's still new! It's still amazing and powerful and brings you so much joy! But you have this sadness that there won't be any new games. I don't recall any other artists that I feel this way about who have passed.
It's Any Winehouse! 'Nuff said.
This is her best album.
Alltid fantastisk, bara en 4 för att hon har bättre plattor
Based as fuck
I liked this a lot! I was a fan of Amy Winehouse before, but like a lot of artists I haven't ever listened to her albums all the way through, I just listened to individual songs. I was really able to hear the Frank Sinatra influence on the album, particularly on Moody's Mood For Love and No Greater Love. There were some much more boring tracks, but overall solid album.
What a generational talent. What Adele wishes she could be.
What a talent she was. This type of music doesn't get me going, but she did it so well.
Really nice blending of styles, from soul to blues to jazz to indie rock. Wild that this is her first album.
Better than I remembered but too long and not as good as BtB.
schon sehr starkes album, hat mich positiv überrascht
Frank is the debut album of Amy Winehouse. This album shows that Amy is not only a hype due to her tragic life and death, but that she was indeed a great singer performing with a great personality. She really elevates the mostly old compositions to another level.
first song strong as FUCK cool and funky but not her best 4.5
Volim jako Amy i njen glas koji bi mogla i a capella slušat, nije bas album kojeg bi stavila u favorite favorita ali sviđa mi se osjećajnost i besramno izražavanje ljubavnih jada, we all can relate
A lot of same-ish sounding tracks, but "Amy Amy Amy" rocks and is the most female-gaze song I've ever heard. I'm surprised more of these tracks don't show up on playlists/mixed tapes, but I couldn't tell you which ones I'd go for besides that "Amy Amy Amy"
Solid album. She has an incredible voice and works with very talented musicians. Really like the jazz and soul vibe.
Amy winehouse made awesome music. Her unique modern r&b and jazz combo is super good. It’s not as good as back to black but it’s still full of bangers. Fav: you sent me flying
Just a solid album all around. She was taken from us too soon :(
Voice is five plus stars, but the songs are a four minus.
Great Album. Back to Black gets a lot of the love, as it should, but this isn't one to sleep on.
Liked ut
She was such an amazing artist. This album is good - but for me it lacks that special spice that her next album has
Ok
Просто хороштй поп. Хороші вокали. Хороші інструментали. Але не знаю, немає тут чогось особливого. Хз. Оцінка: середня-висока 6
This album definitely does not hot the highs of her later work, but there is definitely foreshadowing of the greatness to come.
Kom meg aldri på Amy-hypetoget.
I really wish I liked Amy Winehouse more. Clearly one of the most talented singers to ever do it, and I *like* all of her music, but I’ve never found myself *loving* it. Glad to have listened to this though; I can now say I’ve listened to all of her (tragically small) discography.
So it was totally news to me that there was a prior album to Back to Black. I know a lot of rock stars died young, especially at 27, but something about Amy (maybe the recentness?) just makes the whole thing kind of sad, even when it's otherwise a very solid album.
I know it's good, but it's also just not my thing. Gave it two listens and couldn't really get into it. Even still, doesn't feel worthy of less than three stars.
I remember the take on this album being that it paled in comparison to Back to Black—good if a kind of typical musically in that jazzy, Norah Jones-adjacent way. Having now listened to Frank, I think that's mostly true. But Winehouse's voice is like no one else's, and her personality—and demons—are way more engaging than Norah Jones. Even if the music isn't my thing, I'd probably listen to Amy Winehouse sing anything.
Debut album, Amy herself isn't the biggest fan either
SIGH.... It was ok. Nothing too crazy. Hope I get something better soon, been serving me mid the last week or so
A good introduction to Amy Winehouse’s music
I much prefer Back to Black.
Put on your fuck me pumps and listen to this
Not my usual music but from time to time I get the want to listen to Amy.
She does have a great voice, but I'm just not a fan of the jazz-like singing. It's decent background music.
I wish I loved this more, she is so so talented. Something annoys me though. Still good
Frank was not the album which catapulted Amy Winehouse into the public consciousness. Even after she achieved fame you’d rarely hear songs from the debut on the radio despite stations spinning cuts from Back to Black and her Zutons cover almost non-stop. Frank is definitely the lesser of her two records, mostly because of lack of single power, but it absolutely has its place. It is vibier, more atmospheric and a more cohesive whole than the follow up.
Solid 3 for Frank for me, all sounds good, nice arrangements, great voice, but none of it particularly moves me and its not my style/genre
