Master Of Puppets

Here we go again. I don't care but I should care more. On the way to soccer games, the boys like to listen to "pump up" music which usually skews "classic metal." Whenever we try Metallica, it doesn't work out. Is it because Lars is a talentless tool? Maybe. But I think it's because SOME melody is needed for us soft suburban boys...

I have seen the concert of Metallica in Barcelona many years ago, It was great.

Some good guitar and drums! They are obviously a classic in this genre for a reason, but it seems just a bit too similar song to song and didn't wow me as much as I expected it to

I guess I can see how this is important and super exciting for some people but it does very little for me. No sense of fun or even really anger, it’s all very skilful and complicated but I just had to trudge through it to get to the next one.

It delivered what I expected. Some nice riffs, funny lyrics and all in all a pleasant experience. Nothing much else to say. It's good

I see the impact and significance of this album but I couldn't really get into it. Did like Master Of Puppets and the instrumental though.

Here's my track by track analysis: 1) Definitely doesn't start off how I would have expected, but ultimately "Battery" ends up sounding like a bizarre Duracell commercial. 2) The weird time signature on "Master of Puppets" feels awkward and now I'm agitated. Perhaps that was the intended effect. 3) Did he really just say "death may die" on "The thing that should not be"? Sounds like the soundtrack to a mountain dew fueled dungeons and dragons session. 4) "Welcome Home" kinda sounds like proto grunge during the first half of the song (before they get into the thrashing and soloing). I'm sure the guys in Alice in Chains were listening to this. 5) "Disposable Heroes" is perhaps my favorite track. More straightforward but intense and kind of fun in a way that the other tracks aren't. Almost has a punk energy to it. Kinda reminds me of The Misfits. 6) I think "Leper Messiah" is the blandest track on the album. That double kick pedal really massages the eardrums though. 7) Instrumental metal can work really well! You can showcase more interesting musical structures and techniques without the distraction of the often over-the-top lyrics and/or grating vocal styles common to the genre. Not to say Metallica are guilty of those things, but it's a nice sort of intermission. "Orion" is definitely kinda proggy, but that's not a mark against it in my book. 8) I like the intro to "Damage, Inc." Kinda wish this track was swapped with "Battery" and this track would open the album and "Battery" would close it. This song would be such an intense way to open the album and you could drop F bombs on everyone right off the bat.

"MASTER. MASTER." is what I think every time I see this album title. This era of Metallic is just ok for me. Master of Puppets is fun though. I bet if this album was mixed in not such a mid-heavy way I could get more into it, it just feels a bit flat compared to modern metal mixes.

A lot of heavy topics here. Harmonizing with guitars is something so simple but so impactful. All I was thinking about is how exhausted I'd be performing this live. Favorite songs - Battery, Disposable Heroes

Is this the greatest heavy metal album ever? Maybe, but I'm not a HM guy at all so I'm not the one to judge. I will say that I preerred the Iron Maiden album as well as both Black Sabbath albums (especially 4) to this album. It's true that the musicianship is quite impressive exspecially the drumming but as far as guitar virtuosity, there's very little else that impresses me less. But I understand the quality of this album..just not for me. 3 stars

I had this pegged as the metal connoisseur's Metallica album of choice, whereas I'm more of a casual Black Album / 'greatest hits' kinda guy. I enjoyed this more than expected though; I thought it'd be mostly thrashy stuff but there's plenty of variety. Orion is a great case in point. A strong 3.5 from me.

Klasycznie - z perspektywy czasu Metallica plasuje się gdzieś pomiędzy hard rockiem, a metalem - im dalej w las, tym lżejsze brzmienie albumów. W przypadku Master of Puppets mamy przydługie, niezbyt ciężkie kawałki, z których losowy, 20 sekundowy wycinek mógłby być wycinkiem dowolnego innego utworu. Mimo, że każdy z nich jako część większej składanki miałby rację bytu, cały album jest przytłaczający i lekko... przynudza? Nawet jeśli w tamtych czasach taka perkusja czy riffy gitarowe były czymś nowym, z perspektywy czasu ogromna liczba zespołów robi to po prostu lepiej. Paradoksalnie najbardziej podobało mi się najwolniejsze Welcome Home (Sanitarium), co moim zdaniem dobrze podsumowuje ten album.

Na pewno ten album był wielkim poruszeniem w momencie wydania, jednak po tylu latach i dla człowieka, który nigdy specjalnie się trash metalem nie interesował większym zaskoczeniem niż znane Battery i tytułowe Master of puppets był na przykład instrumentalny Orion. Ogólnie jak na Mettalice wydaje się dość stonowany cały album. 3.5/5

Najtrudniejsza ocena dotychczas. Z jednej strony jako zagorzały słuchacz metalu od dawien dawna, nie przepadam za Metallicą i uważam, że mało jaki zespół jest tak overrated. Obudzony w środku nocy wymieniłbym 100 subiektywnie przyjemniejszych zespołów metalowych. Nie jest ona w top 5 zespołów na M, nawet nie wiem czy jest najlepszym zespołem na "Me", bo istnieją Meshuggah i Megadeth i choć nie jestem jakimś die-hard fanem obu, to zdecydowanie wolę odpalić je niż Metallicę. Z drugiej strony, "Master of Puppets" należy jeszcze do tych lepszych albumów, zanim się skomercjalizowali. No i Metallica to pewien entry point do metalu i zespół popularyzujący gatunek od zawsze, więc za to im chwała. Album jako całości słucha się w miarę przyjemnie, jak na Metallicę, pozycja tego krążka jako klasyki thresha jest niepodważalna. Wiele o zawartości nie trzeba mówić, jaki MoP jest każdy widzi. Nie zgodzę się absolutnie z tezami, że to najlepsze co metal spotkało, że są w czymkolwiek najlepsi (technicznie, lirycznie, brzmieniowo, wokalnie), że są wyjątkowi, że w dzisiejszych czasach nie ma takiej muzyki - akurat metal rozwija się zajebiście i od "Master of Puppets" do dnia dzisiejszego pojawiło się mnóstwo zajebistych i unikalnych zespołów, albumów, podgatunków etc. I zapewne pojawiać się będzie. Dlaczego 3/5? Dałbym takie 2.5, a że nie mogę, to daję 3, ponieważ: 1) Zapewne nie będzie w tym zestawieniu dużo metalu, a ten co będzie, będzie popowy lub heavy metalowym klasykiem, powtarzanym w radiach do znudzenia 2) Zapewne będzie więcej albumów Metallici, w tym niestety te nowsze, więc trzeba mieć skalę - nie wszystkie nowe albumy zasługują na 1 3) Bo mimo wszystko biorąc pod uwagę, że zapewne zarzucą nas jeszcze 2 albumami Cohena, kilkoma albumami Beatlesów itp., miło posłuchać jakiegoś metalu :P Ale jeśli to byłby challenge typu 1001 best metal albums, dałbym 2/5. Bo naprawdę mamy 2022.

Great band. Love the monster movie. Just never connected like so many people do.

This is a tough one for me, not a fan of Metallica or Metal at all but I can see how this is a classic for listeners who love metal. Not much more to say on this one. Favorite song: Orion. 2.5 based on its place in metal alone.

This album has a little bit of everything, intricate solos at high speed, thrash-metal drumming and inventive prog-riffs. Not my cup of tea, but definitely a complete album.

🤘🤘🤘 Buzzsaw guitars, ominous howls, breakneck drumming, odd time signatures. This record is certainly a mood and a half. Easily the best metal record we've gotten so far -- it's hard for me to know whether this a genre I'll ever meaningfully connect with. And to be honest, the runtime got a little long for me on this one. There's a few tracks that stood out for me, but the overall impact was a little blunted by the length. It's surprisingly proggy. The musicianship and vision are really vivid, which I can appreciate. I feel like it's one of those things of trying to judge an album on the merits of what it seeks to accomplish. And on that count, I can't find any fault with this album. It's not really my taste, but it definitely deserves a place on this list. There's something about it that feels essential. It's also striking to me how diverse the inclusions from the 1980s are here. You can really see the blueprint for all the subgenres still going until this day across these different releases. Great song but a million times on one album? It's good but... Not that good!

Although I'm not overly familiar with their entire catalog, I do like this band whenever I hear their music. It's more thrashy and frenetic than the music to which I typically listen, but I love the energy and I think James Hetfield's sense of melody is fantastic. I also always admire the bands' musicianship, especially Hetfield's guitar playing (Kirk Hammett is a superbly talented guitarist in his own right; I think the reason my ear bends towards Hetfield is aesthetically I'm not that into shredding). After a while, the constant driving and often staccato style of this album start to blur together for me, and even grates on me a bit, but it's overall quite good.

Enjoyed that more than I expected. “Speed Metal” comes alive. 3.5/5

Everything was slower than I expected. I thought this was speed metal. I think I would have really enjoyed this album if you could hear the bass on anything other than Orion.

Always wished I liked Metallica more but I just can't get into the heavy side of this heavy metal. Definitely enjoy their 90s stuff more

Call it the metal equivalent of the "Seinfeld" Is Unfunny trope but this seems overrated. Weird because I loved sabbath. Anyways, solid 3

I don't think I've ever heard the full-length version of the title track, so I was pleasantly surprised to find ~3 more minutes of head-banging goodness on top of what I already knew. It's that relentless energy that makes this album listenable; maybe I'm using the wrong speakers/'phones, but this thing absolutely drowns in mids that tend to wash out the bass and drums. Burton's lines deserve to be heard, damn it!

I wish I loved this album. I would like to. I know it's good, it's just not for me. Potentially because I heard all the songs at various alternative venues first while being uncomfortably pissed and/or felt up by guys with sticky hair

Disclaimer: This album requires several focused listenings to appreciate. I'd like it more, the more I listen. This album is embarrassed in the company of genuinely great Metallica like the Black Album. Musicianship and lyricism appear at several points, but much of the middle of this album is simply aggression, without substance to back it up. The album sets the tone early, with Battery, an impressive song, but also a good case study in the difference between technically impressive music and good music. Orion would have been a good conclusion for the album. It's a good song on its own, and it also returns to the theme of Battery. Every guitar solo on this album is worth hearing, in context, so you should listen all the way through, if only to appreciate the guitar solos. This album would be much better if Destruction Inc. were dropped from the lineup.

Master of Puppets is universally considered a masterpiece, and it's easy to see why. James Hetfield's rhythm guitar playing is technically flawless, executing intricate, rhythmically complex, lightning quick parts adroitly, but always with a human feel. His vocal performance is aggressive, but the farthest thing from sloppy. Cliff Burton matches Hetfield on bass, step by step. Drummer Lars Ulrich isn't as subtle or as tasteful as Hetfield and Burton, but he does fine. Kirk Hammet's leads are impeccable, although I personally would prefer that he take more chances harmonically, given Metallica's obvious ambition. These are complex, tightly written songs with a wide stylistic range--within metal, of course. And the lyrics match, ruminating intelligently on various aspects of the misuse of power. The band is blessed with crystal clear production from Flemming Rasmussen that allows you to luxuriate in every last note, and which neatly sidesteps all the worst aspects of 80s production. There is literally nothing to complain about on Master of Puppets at all. Why then does it leave me cold? I really don't understand. Still, on a purely intellectual basis, it's obvious that Master of Puppets (which I'm told is largely a consolidation of previous album Ride the Lightning's innovations) pushed metal into new levels of complexity and virtuosity. It obviously influenced virtually every metal and thrash album that came after it. It richly deserves its inclusion on the 1001 list. Which leads me to a conundrum. How do I rate Master of Puppets 5/5 when I didn't even really enjoy it? Here's my non-solution: I'm not going to rate it at all.

I admire their speed and their power and their talent. These guys can play. But other than the title track (which is great), there's not much on this album that makes me want to listen again. Similar to how the Ramones made me feel, I can see why other folks like them but they're just not for me right now. I think maybe they're good for adolescent dudes who are mad at their math teacher and I can't not take that personally today.

Sounds like I should buy it used. Saw this your live in 1986, band was right but it just didn’t have the passion. Now I hear that on the studio recording too.

Instrumental was awesome. I was in a funky mood tho so not really my cup of tea. The thing about metal is it’s always so fast and there’s nothing really drawing me in. I get why folks like it though because of the great musicians.

Tight, chunky, sanitised, aggression. The songs are perhaps a little too meandering, too long, and too self-indulgent, but some great moments.

1. Really like the sinister acoustic sounds in the beginning. Drummer goes ham. Vocals are nice. 2. Good. Second half of the song is nice. 3. I really like the main riff for this one. 4. Non-metal main riff seems really sinister, I like it. 5. I liked it. 6. OK. 7. Liked the part at 4:30. 8. Not a fan. The solo does go ham at 3:50 though.

Master of Puppets has always been a favorite track of mine, but comparatively, the others don't hold up in my opinion.

The eponymous track is definitely the strongest on the album. It really dragged after that. Not every song needs to be over eight minutes long.

I did my best to put aside my dislike of the genre as I played this album... The undeniably energetic music is rather undone by the twiddlydiddly guitar. The whole thing sounds a bit repetitive.

My problem with metallica is that the production is just too clean, too polished. The mixing makes everything sound understated. There’s no real dynamic range, nothing pops or shines, there’s no grit or edge. Can’t help but wonder what they would sound like with someone like steve albini on production.

Thrash metal just isn’t my thing. How they slap together two different songs into one does not impress me at all. There’s never any cohesion or any apparent reason for why they take songs in the different directions they do. Maybe I’ll return to this after the wife takes the kids and it’ll connect with me. It’s probably telling that I preferred a lot of the intros to the main body of most of the songs. Not very original. I do like some of their later material, but this album doesn’t really do anything for me.

This is not my cup of tea. I like some metal, but it's gotta have a touch of drama and camp, and more interesting musical elements. I found this just so straight ahead and self-serious, it got boring pretty quickly. It tends to just fall back on this mid temp chug that puts me to sleep, and all of the more technical elements were pretty predictable. Much respect to them for building a lot of what the genre is known for today, but this just sounds hollow to my ears. 2/5

sure there's a lot of craft in puppeteering but I've never found it that engaging. I certainly don't see why you'd make a whole album bragging how good you are with puppets. besides, based on the album cover I think there might be some weird evangelism going on in this puppet show.

Album #124 Metallica: Master of Puppets I think I’ve given up on trying to enjoy thrash metal. After listening to Rust in Peace and Justice for All, I came away thinking that they weren’t bad, yet never really did anything for me. I assumed the more I heard, the more I would get it, and when I saw that my album today was Master of Puppets, I figured this would be the time that it finally clicked for me, since this is meant to be the magnum opus. Yet again, none of the sounds and noises are actively displeasing; however, I am just extremely bored by this music. I hope one day I can see what others like in this, but I can’t say I’m going to put much effort into it. Best Songs: Master of Puppets, Battery, Orion Worst Song: Damage, Inc Score out of 10: 5

Title track aside (which is still an absolute banger), I found this increasingly tedious as time went on.

Would enjoy it more if it wasn't 60% widdly guitar and was maybe the length of Reign In Blood. Hetfield has a set of lungs and the drummer is impressive though.

I just don't get Metallica, or metal in general. Chugging distorted guitar - Check Angry lyrics screamed into the mic - Check Drummer smashing the kit up - Check This seems a good example of this genre I suspect, it may even be a great example of it. But I just can't stand it. Turned off after 2 songs 2 - and that's generous

I would probably be a happier person if I could hear the greatness others hear in Metallica but I am deaf to it. To me, this album the musical equivalent of hearing someone pound on your neighbor's door. It's not for me but somehow I am involved.

I tried. I really did. Thrash metal is just not my thing. I will say that I do appreciate the musicianship and production of this album. It "sounds" good. And I'll admit there was "some" slight head nodding on my part. But it's just not my cup of tea....

I understand that this might be the best metal album of all time but still don't like it. Yes they can play fast and furious but just doesn't do anything for me.

Long ass album

Most heavy metal bands are unknown to me, but I have heard of Metallica. That means they must be very popular, or they have been around a long time, or both. Other than “Enter Sandman” I don’t know much else from them. The music on this album is well done, so I can understand how heavy metal fans would enjoy it. But for me it’s not memorable.

I'm just not a metal fan. There's the DOOM riff. That was fun. I've realized these reviews are public. Keep in mind that I'm giving it 2 stars out of 5 understanding that it is part of the "1001 great album" cannon.

Tiresome, one-dimensional nose occasionally punctuated by a decent guitar solo. One listen was enough. The idea that this is a must-listen is laughable.

Heavy Guitar Riff, repetitive drum beat, screamy lyrics with the the odd guitar solo thrown in. Rinse and repeat for an hour. There was nothing in remotely notable. same score as the self titled album 2 stars

Okay, this was better than the last Metallica album, but still very much not for me.

There’s some beautiful melodies in here. Something this album does very well is turn those melodies into the exaggerated, thrashing core of the songs. The speed is extremely impressive. This superfast style isn’t that evocative for me, and I found myself wishing for more time with the slower parts, but I see the appeal! Seems like an insanely fun live experience.

This is definitely not a genre I've spent much time with. I liked the slower songs, particularly Orion. Otherwise, not for me, though I can appreciate the skill.

As a drum teacher master of puppets sends me into fight or flight and the entire album sounds like that song

I've listened to Master Of Puppets more times than I can count bur never to a whole Metallica album. Therefore I expected a lot from this album. But what …? Everything sounds the same with small variations. I am very disappointed!

10 hour long album is fucking insane. I am only going to listen to disc one which is 8 songs. I have never been a huge fan of Metallica and I doubt this will change my mind on that. I think as a band, they are extremely overrated. Track 1 is one of their better songs. Track 2 is THE Metallica song and, once again, I think it is entirely too hyped up. I feel like Metallica is only good to men with overly large egos and a God complex who think they are better than everyone else because they listen to Metallica. Stop trying to be different, there is heavier music that is exponentially better than this. I think the only thing saving this album from a 1 star review from me is the occasionally cool guitar riff/solo. The vocals are subpar and generally, the music is boring and the songs are way too long (just like the whole album). I am so bored with this I honestly might just stop here.

4,5/10 the only memorable one is master of puppets

fave song - orion (hm master of puppets). all of the songs felt very similar, i really liked when some of the songs would kind of break away and sound different. for example, i love the break in the middle of master of puppets for this reason. orion is purely instrumental but i think that’s what i like most about it. it’s also a little slower than the other songs at some points. give my brain a break lol.

Favorite Song: Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Least Favorite Song: Damage, Inc. I like it whenever they're not screaming. To quote Robin Buckley from Stranger Things, “Music! We need music!”

not my type of music. still gave it a go. Seems too monotunous to me. I like the fact they started with a Spanish guitar, that lasted 10 seconds :) the only bit different thing was Welcome Home and Orion. Clearly I am more of a BLACK ALBUM kind of guy than this.

I completely understand why this is such a loved and highly-praised album and the musicianship is clearly amazing, but this one’s just not for me personally.

To these ears it's fairly generic, repetitive, boring rock music.

My heart pumps extra blood to my ears to soothe them, my sympathetic nervous system tells my body to run, and my body is at risk of spontaneously combusting. Metal is just not for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Really don't care for Metallica in all honesty

These guys almost make metal listenable. Almost! Barely made it through this one. So maybe one or two songs could make the list, not the whole LP.

I understand how I liked this music when I was an edgy teenager, because it sure sounds like it was written by one All I hear now is a group of semi-competent musicians making songs that overstay their welcome.

I was having a good time listening to this, but then it started to get very samey and grating. I checked the playtime and I was less than halfway through. Conclusion: good in small doses.

Nope. I just don't understand this genre of music at all. I don't understand the appeal. The only song I could stomach was "Orion", and that's mainly because it didn't sound like the Metallica of the rest of the album. Not for me.

Listen, I've been genuinely depressed in my life, still am, I know about mental health; I've been subject to a few of the faults of our power structures set up out there. I'm anti-war. I don't really need someone shouting about how much death and darkness and bloodshed there is, and saying nothing more. I wrote poems like this at school, and didn't write them when I experienced real life, and I got better at poetry. War poems by people who, like me, haven't been there, read a certain way. I guess a real experience might - might - include the stunned silence of trauma. The album correctly says, we're all servants to the powers that be, but it doesn't really identify what that is, how you might be part of it yourself when you're suing a child and family for downloading a song, say. Leonard Cohen is more Metal. Anyone who sits, names their darkness, instead of projecting it onto nameless entities supposedly creating our doom, is stronger to me, even when entities exist. They exist, but "us and a nameless them" isn't the totality. Hey, sometimes in the right contexts, I like one who bows to a Messiah, the act, the idea. Bowing to your power can be pretty cool - can be. I really like the guitars. I like it when there isn't a vocal as self-satisfied as a teenager saying "dark-sounding" words. On "Orion", it opens up, just rocking out, and you can think for yourself. Instrumental Metal might be more my thing until a band can speak to me about experience. I like Damage Inc. and I like a lot on this album. It's prompting me to look further into Metal, but I'm finding the whole Metallica package quite annoying.

Can Metallica sound like generic Metallica? Seems so.

Technically superb and clearly a genre-defining metal album at it’s time - but metal never fully does it for me and despite the albums strengths, it doesn’t grip me.

Yuck more Metallica. This is far too soon since the site gave me the black album. I feel similarly with this to the black album. Hatfield is one of the worst vocalist of all time. He truly ruins it from being an ok listen. And if I focus too hard on Lars drumming I vomit in my mouth. I will say that this record overall is faster and more driving and I do appreciate that somewhat. Battery is about the only song id say thats sorta listenable but still not a recommend. This shit sucks and I hate it but I will say that I gave the black album a 2 for the historical and cultural significance but I shouldn't have. This almost earns its 3 stars and while it still blows its much better than the black album. Id rather put a 2 here than on that garbage. All I can hope for is this is it for shitallica. I pray to whoever can help me with that. Im waiting with bated breath for st anger....please God no

I learned to appreciate this band over the years. I am not a big fan of heavy metal but I can enjoy it (tolerate it) once in a while.

This was pretty fun. It helps I was in the mood for some metal this morning. I haven’t listened to a ton of Metallica outside of the popular stuff but this was ok. A lot of it sounds the same but you can’t argue with the talent in making the sound.

Definitely not my cup of tea. Very whiny vocals with abrasive loud guitars, struggled to get just a little over halfway through. Not sure why they became so popular when there is so much better stuff out there.

It pains me to give this two stars. I have listened to this album hundreds of times. This album is perfect with cheap headphones or speakers. I listened to the FLAC HD stream on Tidal with high quality gear and, analytically speaking, it is very bad. Cliff is totally lost in the mix, that or Cliff, James, and Kirk are the greatest ever unit in complete lock step. I primarily heard a rhythm guitar, with distortion, and Lars's unenthusiastic drumming. I am a passable, volunteer, drummer in a church band and I feel like I could competently take Lars's throne. This is most clear on The Thing That Should No Be. Just awful, Kirk had a 10 second solo. Honestly, I wish I skipped this one, this time.

Extremadamente ruidoso al punto de ser molesto. Es trash metal, y entiendo que sea el punto. Pero los beats de la bateria son poco imaginativos y el cantante solo se dedica a gritar las letras, sin tener suficiente fuerza gutural o melodicidad. Los intentos de generar cambios de compases o cambios de secciones son muy pobres, sobre todo porque las marcaciones de la batería son demasiado obvias. Los temas son muy largos y no disfruté de la mezcla del disco, los solos de guitarra parecen sonar en una habitación alejada por ejemplo. Si está claro que el tema "Master Of Puppets" tiene un riff icónico y memorable (aunque no piense lo mismo de lo que resta del tema después de la introducción). También cabe destacar la segunda sección del tema "Orion" como un buen momento del álbum donde bajan la intensidad, la guitarra genera otros efectos, aunque la batería sigue igual de tosca y vacia de sutilezas. Entiendo que Cliff Burton fue un virtuoso del instrumento, pero eso no se llega a apreciar realmente, con excepción de algunos riffs. Entiendo que a quien le guste este estilo de música le parezca un buen álbum, y tal vez para la época fue significativo. En mi opinión no encuentro nada muy sobresaliente.

I never thought I’d be listening to Metallica at 8:30AM barely 30 minutes after waking up. Yet here we are. This was my first ever Metallica album to listen to. However, heavy metal is not for me. But at least I tried!

Trash Metal with good guitar riffs, Lots of screamy vocals and dated production. For me this makes it exhausting to listen to and I realize I probably would like it more in doses rather than a whole hour straight. Apart from that it wasn't good to listen to while running.

It all started sounding the same to me after the first few songs. I get that it’s a landmark album for thrash metal, but it could have been half the length for me.

The best thing I can say about Metallica is they gave us Megadeth... This one is a bit boring and monotonous for me. They've had some good songs over the years, don't get me wrong, but I've never understood how they're part of the big four of thrash. The only thing more insufferable than the cult of Metallica is Lars Ulrich.
