Reviews (page 12 of 14)

I just don't get Metallica, or metal in general. Chugging distorted guitar - Check Angry lyrics screamed into the mic - Check Drummer smashing the kit up - Check This seems a good example of this genre I suspect, it may even be a great example of it. But I just can't stand it. Turned off after 2 songs 2 - and that's generous

Saved? ❌ Would listen again? ❌ Would recommend to anyone? ❌ Would buy on Vinyl? ❌

I would probably be a happier person if I could hear the greatness others hear in Metallica but I am deaf to it. To me, this album the musical equivalent of hearing someone pound on your neighbor's door. It's not for me but somehow I am involved.

nie moje klimaty

Oh well ... It has its moments. But I've never really been into Metallica and their brand of metal. Too ... adolescent, I guess.

Försöker att relatera till hårdrock jag gillar, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath. Inte lika bra.

I tried. I really did. Thrash metal is just not my thing. I will say that I do appreciate the musicianship and production of this album. It "sounds" good. And I'll admit there was "some" slight head nodding on my part. But it's just not my cup of tea....

I get that this is influential and basically a classic album at this point. It’s objectively well done, but I just do not enjoy it. Metal remains not my jam

I understand that this might be the best metal album of all time but still don't like it. Yes they can play fast and furious but just doesn't do anything for me.

Long ass album

Most heavy metal bands are unknown to me, but I have heard of Metallica. That means they must be very popular, or they have been around a long time, or both. Other than “Enter Sandman” I don’t know much else from them. The music on this album is well done, so I can understand how heavy metal fans would enjoy it. But for me it’s not memorable.

I'm just not a metal fan. There's the DOOM riff. That was fun. I've realized these reviews are public. Keep in mind that I'm giving it 2 stars out of 5 understanding that it is part of the "1001 great album" cannon.

Tiresome, one-dimensional nose occasionally punctuated by a decent guitar solo. One listen was enough. The idea that this is a must-listen is laughable.

A little too intense for my taste

Incredibly skilled, but not my jam. If this is your thing, I can completely see why this album is highly rated. Pitchfork: 10.0 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #97 (2020) Best Songs Master of Puppets

Heavy Guitar Riff, repetitive drum beat, screamy lyrics with the the odd guitar solo thrown in. Rinse and repeat for an hour. There was nothing in remotely notable. same score as the self titled album 2 stars

Childish nonsense

(3/7) Too loud

Okay, this was better than the last Metallica album, but still very much not for me.

There’s some beautiful melodies in here. Something this album does very well is turn those melodies into the exaggerated, thrashing core of the songs. The speed is extremely impressive. This superfast style isn’t that evocative for me, and I found myself wishing for more time with the slower parts, but I see the appeal! Seems like an insanely fun live experience.

Nostalgija 😅 dobro mi je došlo za stresan dan na poslu, nekako ugodnije slušati Larsa da mi buši bubnjiće nego ljude. Takav dan izgleda 😁 2/5, 4/10

This is definitely not a genre I've spent much time with. I liked the slower songs, particularly Orion. Otherwise, not for me, though I can appreciate the skill.

As a drum teacher master of puppets sends me into fight or flight and the entire album sounds like that song

Not a heavy metal guy

Bro what did I do to deserve two metal albums this week :( but there were enough melodic interludes and real singing on this one to get me through it at least

I just don't see why Löded Diper couldn't make it if Metallica did

I can certainly see why people would like this. The appeal is there and it's well-made, but it's just not for me.

Not listening to that it’s apparently meh

Holy shit how do people listen to a whole album of this? One song is like "hell yeah" but then it just keeps coming. So discordant and angry and unrelenting

I want to like metal music but this didn't help me in that quest

quiet slow FAST FAST FAST LOUD quiet slow Repeat, sometimes for 8 minutes.

Not for me

Que c'est épuisant ... Très peu varié, j'ai eu l'impression d'écouter un seul est unique titre de plus de 1h. Le métal n'est décidement pas ma tasse de thé.

I've listened to Master Of Puppets more times than I can count bur never to a whole Metallica album. Therefore I expected a lot from this album. But what …? Everything sounds the same with small variations. I am very disappointed!

i’m sure it’s amazing for those who love the genre

Donnerstag, 15.01.2026 In der U3 Richtung Thielplatz, in der philologischen Bibliothek der FU Berlin

10 hour long album is fucking insane. I am only going to listen to disc one which is 8 songs. I have never been a huge fan of Metallica and I doubt this will change my mind on that. I think as a band, they are extremely overrated. Track 1 is one of their better songs. Track 2 is THE Metallica song and, once again, I think it is entirely too hyped up. I feel like Metallica is only good to men with overly large egos and a God complex who think they are better than everyone else because they listen to Metallica. Stop trying to be different, there is heavier music that is exponentially better than this. I think the only thing saving this album from a 1 star review from me is the occasionally cool guitar riff/solo. The vocals are subpar and generally, the music is boring and the songs are way too long (just like the whole album). I am so bored with this I honestly might just stop here.

Not my vibe

Puedo valorar que es una gran banda de música, pero no puedo con el metal.

Meh, was okay till the singing started

I get it, and I’m surprised I’ve gone this long without listening to it, but all of the songs kind of sounded the same to me.

more unnoticeable than i expected

Thrash metal isn’t it for me. Sorry if I’m a poser, but I prefer Nu metal.

Fine, but not my style of music. The slower songs were nicer.

Too much metal for me. Although, I guess that is the point

Not My Headliner!

I have a certain disdain for Metallica. Sorry, not sorry. This feels like homework I didn't want to do. It feels like a physical endurance test. There’s no breathing room, just endless, repetitive, technically proficient shredding. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Orion (Instrumental)

hab nicht wirklich gehört, kein Bock drauf gehabt

repetitivo, nada se destaca além de master of puppets. não achei ruim, só não gosto de metal básico.

é como se eu estivesse ouvindo uma música ruim de 54 minutos, nenhuma música chama atenção e tudo eh igual, te odeio metallica

didnt like a lot of the songs maybe i will do another listen when i am in the mood for this kind of music but for now it was 2-3

4,5/10 the only memorable one is master of puppets

fave song - orion (hm master of puppets). all of the songs felt very similar, i really liked when some of the songs would kind of break away and sound different. for example, i love the break in the middle of master of puppets for this reason. orion is purely instrumental but i think that’s what i like most about it. it’s also a little slower than the other songs at some points. give my brain a break lol.

Favorite Song: Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Least Favorite Song: Damage, Inc. I like it whenever they're not screaming. To quote Robin Buckley from Stranger Things, “Music! We need music!”

I think I just don't really like Metallica.

Im not a big fan

I like how the first two songs transitioned into each other. I found the album a tad bit boring. It isn’t quite my taste

gave me a headbangerheadache

Not my thing.

Well I liked Orion. The rest was claustrophobic.

Just not a fan.

I feel like I was supposed to like this a whole lot more than I did. Master of Puppets was great because it seemed to grow in intensity, but the rest of the songs stayed kind of flat to me. Just more and more songs in E minor.

The guitar playing is sick for sure, cannot be denied but not my scene. So screamyyyy.

I tried…

I like the t-shirt I have of this album so much more than the music of it and I am not ashamed of that.

not my cup of tea

not my type of music. still gave it a go. Seems too monotunous to me. I like the fact they started with a Spanish guitar, that lasted 10 seconds :) the only bit different thing was Welcome Home and Orion. Clearly I am more of a BLACK ALBUM kind of guy than this.

I completely understand why this is such a loved and highly-praised album and the musicianship is clearly amazing, but this one’s just not for me personally.

To these ears it's fairly generic, repetitive, boring rock music.

Crash bang boom

Metallica was never my particular flavor of metal I'm gonna stick with Twisted Sister, AC/DC, Van Halen, Motorhead

My heart pumps extra blood to my ears to soothe them, my sympathetic nervous system tells my body to run, and my body is at risk of spontaneously combusting. Metal is just not for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Really don't care for Metallica in all honesty

These guys almost make metal listenable. Almost! Barely made it through this one. So maybe one or two songs could make the list, not the whole LP.

Copied from earlier review: It was alright. Not a big metallica fan in general. The riffs become monotonous after a while. Master of Puppets is still a classic song though. Strong 2/5

Inte riktigt min grej

Almost beyond boring.

I understand how I liked this music when I was an edgy teenager, because it sure sounds like it was written by one All I hear now is a group of semi-competent musicians making songs that overstay their welcome.

I simply do not get the appeal

I'm sure they are good at what they do but every song sounds the same to me, fast and angry

I like Metallica pretty well but they’ve always been more of a greatest hits band than an album band for me. There’s songs here I like a lot, always was a big fan of Sanitarium, but i don’t really feel the need to listen to it straight through very often, if ever

great, that i finally spend some time with metallica, but not really my thing. first songs are super energetic, but the sound gets quickly old for me.

I was having a good time listening to this, but then it started to get very samey and grating. I checked the playtime and I was less than halfway through. Conclusion: good in small doses.

Not really my thing but pretty good at what they do

i respect metallica just never going to be my thing tbh

Nope. I just don't understand this genre of music at all. I don't understand the appeal. The only song I could stomach was "Orion", and that's mainly because it didn't sound like the Metallica of the rest of the album. Not for me.

"Pull the string! Pull the string! A mistake is made. A story must be told. Beware...beware! Beware of the big green dragon that sits on your doorstep. He eats little boys...puppy dog tails, and big, fat snails. Beware, take care....beware!" - Bella Lugosi, "Glen or Glenda" The musicianship is so great. A powerful voice. This isn't "my genre". I've been trying to consider that as not of consequence for this challenge, but it is. Listen, I've been genuinely depressed in my life, still am, I know about mental health; I've been subject to a few of the faults of our power structures set up out there. I'm anti-war. I don't really need someone shouting about how much death and darkness and bloodshed there is, and saying nothing more. I wrote poems like this at school, and didn't write them when I experienced real life, and I got better at poetry. War poems by people who, like me, haven't been there, read a certain way. I guess a real experience might - might - include the stunned silence of trauma. The album correctly says, we're all servants to the powers that be, but it doesn't really identify what that is, how you might be part of it yourself when you're suing a child and family for downloading a song, say. Leonard Cohen is more Metal. Anyone who sits, names their darkness, instead of projecting it onto nameless entities supposedly creating our doom, is stronger to me, even when entities exist. They exist, but "us and a nameless them" isn't the totality. Hey, sometimes in the right contexts, I like one who bows to a Messiah, the act, the idea. Bowing to your power can be pretty cool - can be. I really like the guitars. I like it when there isn't a vocal as self-satisfied as a teenager saying "dark-sounding" words. On "Orion", it opens up, just rocking out, and you can think for yourself. Instrumental Metal might be more my thing until a band can speak to me about experience. I like Damage Inc. and I like a lot on this album. It's prompting me to look further into Metal, but I'm finding the whole Metallica package quite annoying.

Metallica has never been a band that I rated highly so this album didn't change my opinion on them. So so. Gave it 2 stars for effort.

Meh-tallica

Can Metallica sound like generic Metallica? Seems so.

Not really my thing (i was putting off listening to this), but not too bad. A bit too heavy, I don’t love the really heavy bass lines but some redeeming stuff

Technically superb and clearly a genre-defining metal album at it’s time - but metal never fully does it for me and despite the albums strengths, it doesn’t grip me.

Not for me at all

didn’t hate it but didn’t particularly like it either

Yuck more Metallica. This is far too soon since the site gave me the black album. I feel similarly with this to the black album. Hatfield is one of the worst vocalist of all time. He truly ruins it from being an ok listen. And if I focus too hard on Lars drumming I vomit in my mouth. I will say that this record overall is faster and more driving and I do appreciate that somewhat. Battery is about the only song id say thats sorta listenable but still not a recommend. This shit sucks and I hate it but I will say that I gave the black album a 2 for the historical and cultural significance but I shouldn't have. This almost earns its 3 stars and while it still blows its much better than the black album. Id rather put a 2 here than on that garbage. All I can hope for is this is it for shitallica. I pray to whoever can help me with that. Im waiting with bated breath for st anger....please God no

I learned to appreciate this band over the years. I am not a big fan of heavy metal but I can enjoy it (tolerate it) once in a while.

Whatever.

This was pretty fun. It helps I was in the mood for some metal this morning. I haven’t listened to a ton of Metallica outside of the popular stuff but this was ok. A lot of it sounds the same but you can’t argue with the talent in making the sound.

Definitely not my cup of tea. Very whiny vocals with abrasive loud guitars, struggled to get just a little over halfway through. Not sure why they became so popular when there is so much better stuff out there.

My bf likes it, and to enjoy it you really need to turn it on loud. I'm not a big fan but can be energizing

It pains me to give this two stars. I have listened to this album hundreds of times. This album is perfect with cheap headphones or speakers. I listened to the FLAC HD stream on Tidal with high quality gear and, analytically speaking, it is very bad. Cliff is totally lost in the mix, that or Cliff, James, and Kirk are the greatest ever unit in complete lock step. I primarily heard a rhythm guitar, with distortion, and Lars's unenthusiastic drumming. I am a passable, volunteer, drummer in a church band and I feel like I could competently take Lars's throne. This is most clear on The Thing That Should No Be. Just awful, Kirk had a 10 second solo. Honestly, I wish I skipped this one, this time.

Not my vibe

I never thought I’d be listening to Metallica at 8:30AM barely 30 minutes after waking up. Yet here we are. This was my first ever Metallica album to listen to. However, heavy metal is not for me. But at least I tried!

This wasn't for me

Not my thing

Not my cup of tea but understand that there are people who like this sort of stuff.

Thrash metal's not my thing but I enjoyed some tracks.

encore le weird fetish de la mort. ça commence à me gosser un peu Master Of Puppets est correcte

Technically good but meh

*Started off pretty cool, then got repetitive. *Will try this one again - kept trying to listen throughout the day and just wasn’t in the mood for light metal. RATING - 6.5/10

Nonnnnnnn

Maybe I’m weird but….nah

Too heavy for me, some songs I liked but some remind me a garage bands doing covers when I was young. Just not my thing

Was not in the mood for this, sorry. Giving it 2.

This is probably a legendary metal album. The problem is I just don't enjoy metal. I've tried my best. I respect the art but don't want to listen to it. 4/10 (2/5)

Trash Metal with good guitar riffs, Lots of screamy vocals and dated production. For me this makes it exhausting to listen to and I realize I probably would like it more in doses rather than a whole hour straight. Apart from that it wasn't good to listen to while running.

It all started sounding the same to me after the first few songs. I get that it’s a landmark album for thrash metal, but it could have been half the length for me.

The best thing I can say about Metallica is they gave us Megadeth... This one is a bit boring and monotonous for me. They've had some good songs over the years, don't get me wrong, but I've never understood how they're part of the big four of thrash. The only thing more insufferable than the cult of Metallica is Lars Ulrich.

Dit soort classics zijn nooit mijn ding geweest. De instrumentale nummers zijn wel nice, maar de rest doet het niet echt voor me.

This is better than the live album on here, but only just.

Master of puppets.

Not my taste

It's not really for me. I could see the appeal but definitely long songs on a long album. 4.2/10

Klinkt goed voor degene die ervan houden.

am i becoming a music snob or was this not that enjoyable?

Metallica followed Megadeath for me this week. It could have been the same band and EVERYTHING I hate about 80s early 90s metal. Same riffs, with shitty guitar indulgences. Never seems to change up. It's just really not for me.

Not as good as the other album. This sounded dark.

What would Led Zeppelin or AC/DC sound like if you took the blues element completely out of their music? They would probably sound a lot like this. Just because you sing loud does not mean you are singing with passion. Every song sounds the same.

p548. 1986. 2 stars. Generic heavy metal, saved from 1 star by some decent riffs. There is nothing here that's hasn't been done better before.

Not my cup of tea I’m sure it’s great for people who like this kinda music 4/10 Seek and Destroy and master of puppets were chill I guess

not my cup of tea

Good for metal but it’s metal like a 5/10 if I was generous

Not my thing at all but I did hear some amazing guitar playing.

Pre-listening thoughts: I don’t do metal. Post/during listening thoughts: I still don’t do metal, but this was probably the best metal album we’ve had so far. 4/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Master of Puppets, Orion Least fav tracks: Welcome Home, Leper Messiah

Solo on "Orion" is interesting and so is the droning passage that follows – no surprise that when the pace slows and the bludgeoning backbeat fades a bit, that the record gets considerably more interesting. All that would make "Orion" one's favorite Metallica cut, which is very much a tall pygmy award. Strong contender for most overrated band of all time.

Spotify shit the bed on this one, claiming that the album is unavailable in the USA. Probably Spotify bending the knee to 47's bullshit committee for "dismantling anti-christian sentiment". Anyway, I can say this from what I have heard of Metallica: I appreciate that they're an early metal band, and an unfortunate target of the Satanic panic. They have their definite place in history, but Gods they are so boring. There's nothing to their sound that appeals to me.

My knee jerk reaction is yuck--Metallica. I've never been a fan. My husband is, and said that this is not that bad. A ringing endorsement. So--let's give it a go! It's clear that they have skill and know what they are doing. I like some of their slower, prettier guitar parts. Orion is interesting. That said, my knee jerk reaction stands. Yuck. I don't love how the songs are composed. The pacing is very Metallica. James Hetfield's voice is what it is. I'm not the right audience for this. I understand that it is beloved by many, but it remains a hard pass for me. I am not young enough, masculine enough, or filled with enough rage. Thrash just makes my joints ache.

I thought I'd like it more...

Less awful than the other couple of Metallica records that have come up so far. I still dislike the overall cut of their jib but this is nearly tolerable.

I know some Metallica, I’ve enjoyed some Metallica but there was nothing in this album that I really enjoyed. I appreciate the hard guitar but it didn’t keep my attention. Shame.

Couldn’t tell you which song is which. I DO NOT LIKE METAL. Prefer plastic I can’t lie to anyone. Did not like it . I now have a headache

what is that specific style of guitar you hear in 80s metal that’s extremely tight and rhythmic and monotonous? is that the ‘thrash’ in thrash metal? whatever it is, it’s horrific and shrinks the sonic landscape of every single song and makes the whole thing such a drag to listen to. it’s so FUCKING boring. even the more melodic and interesting guitar moments (the interlude/bridge/whatever in the title track, i think) are still so shrill and have this really awful buzzy tone to them that i cannot get over. YUCK!!!

i can't believe the titular song has ONE BILLION streams....who are you?? one seventh of the planet is listening to this song?? SHOW YOURSELVES

didn’t like it. the metal was too soft for my liking

Rambles and not killer but ik it’s important to rock music and old people

i liked this album. thought it was kinna one note other than the fourth song (kinna dug that one). lots of guitars. i really like guitars tho. i wanna give this a three star bc i thought it was fine and i’d listen to it as background music but don’t want it to stand too close to any albums i rank 4 or 5 star cuz i’ll REALLY like those. so i give it a two but if this was a 10 star thing i’d give it a five. 🤷‍♀️

Battery: I’m not sure what he’s going on about batteries (3/10). I hate guitar solos. Master of Puppets: I know this one, it’s okay, but I hate guitar solos (5/10). Actually nvm, I thought it ended. There’s still 5 minutes left. I like it less after more guitar solo (4/10). The Thing That Should Not Be: “Crawling chaos, underground. Cult has summoned, twisted sound”. Cringe and too long (2/10). Welcome Home: “They keep me locked up in this cage. Can't they see it's why my brain says rage?” This one’s deep (3/10). Disposable Heroes: I love a good anti war song, but I can’t help but feel disturbingly annoyed by Metallica. I can’t do these long ass songs and back to back guitar solos. I just don’t give a fuck how fast a guitar can be played (5/10). Leper Messiah: I like an anti church song too. I don’t get the leper metaphor tho. Feels like a child wrote it, but I like the “lie, lie, lie…” ending (4/10). Orion: No more lyrics here thankfully. Sadly, it’s just more guitar work. There’s a gong at the halfway point though; I wonder if they have one on stage. I prefer the song post gong (4/10). Damage, Inc: I like the name of this song. Otherwise, I’m bored by the end of all of this (3/10). Overall thoughts: Cool album art Only the coolest people are big fans Stranger things guy Target shirts Walmart shirts Pinball Monster trucks Long hair No sleeves Black The 80’s Lyrics deep af Long songs Guitar solos My rating is an average of each individual song + 0.5 for the album art, monster trucks, and gong. 4/10 I feel like Metallica totally functions as a time piece, but the way they have managed their “brand” has completely diluted anything that may have been there for me to find. I suppose this is why people say you shouldn’t sell out. This is not the worst thing I’ve ever heard, nor do I think it is objectively bad, but any itch I have surrounding music is left unscratched by their sound. I’m certain their influence stretches into music that I enjoy regularly, but I can’t help but find the Master of Puppets very annoying. The fact that this album is held as such a gem makes me feel dumb. DISCLAIMER: if a song was obviously going nowhere else, I skipped the last 20 seconds or so. I get enough from the 7 and a half minutes leading up to the last few slaps at their instruments.

ARGH ARGH ARGH BLAGH BLAGH BLAGH!!!!!! This album was asshole!!!!! Some songs got stuck in my head like, MASTER MASTER MASTER MASTER MASTER OF PUPPETS!!! And SANITARIUM!!!! Other than that, it was a waste of my freaking time! I couldn’t make the music myself so I’ll give them 2 stars, but these guys should really think about the music they’re putting out and the length of their songs.

Songs are really long. I think this is probably a great album for someone just not for me. Maybe one day I’ll like metal 3/10

Some interesting Avalon-style instrumental passages that are constantly interrupted by a chugging boogie

custom_rating: 5

Not the greatest album for a Tuesday morning in the office lol - I'm really just not into this genre- though it isn't a criticism on the album. I know Metallica is wildly successful and talented.

I dont think this is bad but I think I am not a metal enjoyer. just not the sound for me. it's kind of grating on my ears, almost like it's at the wrong frequency for me. in many places just sounds like hitting 1 drum really fast with the guitar playing 2 notes. however the guitars were awesome in places. I get why this stuff is popular and I can understand moshing to this stuff. the lyrics and vocals suit the instrumental sound. but it is not something I would ever listen to unless I could get an edit of just the midtempo guitar parts.

In 5th gear from start to finish with the motor whining all the way.

Not for me

I listened to the whole album but it definitely started to grate. Just not my thing. I can respect the musicianship, especially on Orion, but the lyrics just leave me cold and it was a struggle to listen to the end.

First tried listening to this over 30 years ago and my opinion has not changed since. The sound is too clinical. The guitar, bass and drums offer no melodic nuances, just a relentless thudding and angular guitar patterns. I am not knocking them as musicians I just wish don't get it. Too shouty as well. 2 stars.

I am surprised I didn’t dislike this as much I thought I would. But I listened to this twice, and still don’t have any other strong feelings about this. I will give it an extra star for exceeding my expectations.

I've tried

Over the top heavy metal, too much

I never could really get into Metallica - largely because of the grating vocals - but also because the music is boring and repetitive. A listen through to this album confirms my views... A weak 2 because there are some cool riffs here and there...

Sorry, Lenny… not my jams

So boring. So repetitive. I hated listening to this.

This was fine. I don’t really love Metallica, but I don’t dislike them either. I don’t really have anything else to say about them.

It was alright. Not a big metallica fan in general. The riffs become monotonous after a while. Master of Puppets is still a classic song though

не особо зашел 4/10(и то потому что металлика лега)

seminal album for heavy metal rock, but I just don't get it... the nuances are lost on me A lot of similar songs which are maybe just quicken or slowed down ... "Welcome Home" breaks the mold. "Orion" tried, but then the band remembered what they were there for and reverted back to slash and burn!

I do not care about you metallica

A lot to listen to in a row. Had to take a break . Didn't finish it. But Leif loved it

Metallica: Adjective | mə-ˈta-lik-ə | Derived from the Greek words 'métallo' and 'lickos' (loosely translating to 'Metal Licker'). A word coined as a heavy metal adaptation of the phrase 'window-licker'. This was a result of the high number of instances whereby listeners of this thrash metal music would wildly bang their heads back and forth, to the point their brain stem would start to detach. The result of this meant they were left in a vegetative state, endlessly listening to a guitar and microphone get violently mutilated, until someone either found them and put them out of their misery.. or they eventually died.. having been slumped there for days, slavering until the point they dehydrated/drowned. Luckily I managed to get through this album unscathed, despite feeling the compulsion to smash my head against a wall whilst I listened to it.

Little known fact, James Hetfield wrote this album about his hero Jim Henson. Battery is about the portable power pack they used to power Animal. As you’ll know, Animal’s frame was gangly and didn’t allow for conventional puppeteering methods. The Thing That Should Not Be is about the first idea they had for Kermit and Miss Piggy’s offspring. We’re all used to their litter made up of some pigs and some frogs, but before this, there was the ‘Frig’. A crossbred organism whose grotesque appearance made one Disney executive puncture his own eyeballs with a fish fork on the set of Muppets Take Manhattan. The Frig had a snout that would inflate and deflate like that of a frog’s vocal sac. The Frig also had intestines on top of its head in a cornrow motif for reasons only known to Jim. After the Frig incident Jim’s family sent him on a golfing weekend and had a team of medical specialists convert his home into a rehab centre. On his return he was discreetly monitored for the next 3 years, hence Welcome Home (Sanitarium). Disposable Heroes was about the fickle and harsh reality of Muppet turnover, specifically the large numbers of puppet carcasses that were sent to the Henson furnaces each day. Leper Messiah is actually about televangelists. Guitarist Kirk Hammett’s attempts to steer focus back to traditionally heavy metal themes were largely in vain, but Hetfield conceded and allowed this one on hoping he could pass it off as being about Sweetums. Orion was the name of a Muppet who was an Ivory hunter, he ultimately never made an appearance. Early sketches depicted him as having a tusk like pointy moustache, blood red eyes and a musket. He was ditched after not testing well with 3-6 year olds. Damage, Inc. was of course Teeth’s first band before he formed The Electric Mayhem.

Third Metallica album thus far and I’m loosing my patience - what a load of self-indulgent nonsense.

260 albums in, Kid Rock has yet to make his appearance and so far Metallica owns the crown of most annoying artist. It's like an ear allergy or whatever. Did not finish listening to this masterpiece of testosterone-dripping testicles. Favourite track is the one where they are unhappy with their hotdogs. ("Mustard! Mustard!")

SCREAMING

Not even my favourite Metallica album. Master of Puppets to me just meanders and tries to live up to ride the lightning but just falls short of the mark and replaces the beating heart rhythm and thrilling solos with noice after noice with few stand out tracks. Not Metallicas worst album of course, I don't think theres much debate on what that is, but also far from there best. To me this is just a very whatever album that I can listen to in the background when doing something unimportant.

Yeah, pretty spot on Metallica. Good for inducing a speed-like energy for getting shit done or lifting heavy weights.

Teilweise schöne Melodien, wenn es etwas ruhiger wird. Leider sind die Lieder auch einfach zu lang

off to a bad start.... Eh it got a little better but this is too much

Intense. Not a huge fan. A few songs that got me amped up

Peaks are high, i.e the song Master of Puppets, but everything else falls short.

Poser metal.

It was ok

I know I dislike an album when I keep checking to see if it's almost over. Ultimate respect for Metallica but not at all my thing. For sure would not listen again.

Although the title song is ok, the rest of it is annoyingly boring

I understand the adolescent male fear and insecurities that led to this kind of "music". I also know it has a ton of fans. But to me, this sounds more like affectation than innovation. No desire to hear this again.

Enjoyed it more than I thought but still can't enjoy music with inane meaningless lyrics. Would be better with no singing at all.

Relentless, but also monotonous.

all sounded the same

All the technical ability in the world can't produce music that has any heart, soul, or emotional or intellectual depth. It's just a bunch of forgettable notes.

Not a massive fan, didn’t finish 2/10

Well you can here how the black album came out of this. The seeds are here, unfortunately this one doesn't have tracks like enter sandman and nothing else matters to drag it out of the mire. I first saw them in 1984, and this album demonstrates exactly why I thought they were crap. Even though, retrospectively, you can hear the seeds of greater things, this is not great, not by any stretch of the imagination. A very low 2.

I just find it too cliche. Metal by numbers. Best track is the instrumental. I prefer the black album as it has a bit more variety, leaning away from the thrash and into something more listenable in places.

My problem with heavy metal as a genre is exemplified here, with the same old riffs, silly growly vocals, trying to sound aggressive and not to forget, the melodic introspective, which lead into the heavy guitar. Standard formulaic stuff.

Metallica Grosse name, bis ez han ichs immer gschafft elegant dra verbiz schliche. Aber Schwirig wenn s vum app vorgschlage wird. Also gömmer - so unihgnah - wie möglich i das getöse ine. Mhm ohre dünd weh, mood isch nöd am stiege. Also: Abbruch abbruch (na i 2-3 witeri tracks churz ineschnuppere), und den rückwärtsgang usm album use.

I don't like thrash metal.

Marginally more interesting than their other works, but one jsut doesn't get the appeal of the endlessly repeating and bludgeoning riffs. And one doesn't hear near the level of melody and certainly no "delicacy" at all. The singing is nearly as repetitive/samey as all the guitars. Every cut is entirely too long, too. (These lads really should've listened to more Ramones and taken some lessons on brevity.) One simply can't get into music that directly correlates to migraines.

Teilweise schöne Melodien, wenn es etwas ruhiger wird. Leider sind die Lieder auch einfach zu lang

not as good as the others on first listen.

Thrasher metal was not really my scene back in the day and listening to this album did not convert me. Much of the thrashing just ran together and was not great for background music either.

I'm not really into Metallica. Not my thing. There are moments when I'm like "ohh.. I like that riff and that drum beat is cool". But overall it's kind of boring.

This sounds like the same song on repeat. And why are the songs so long. Tough one to get through.

My least favourite of the good Metallica albums. I can't put my finger on what's wrong here. It's almost as though it has all the right ingredients to be really good, but there's no spark to bring it all together and make it great. I mean, there's nothing actually 'wrong', but it lacks some kind of build quality in comparison to some of their better albums.

Apparently this is the Metallica album worth a shit. Orion was okay. I shall be merciful.

not really metal. not bad, but not really for me.

Battery sounds like punk. The thing that should not be sounds like a heavy Rush.

As much as I love Metal and Hardcore music, I was never really a fan of Metallica... They have some really iconic songs, even ones that I enjoy, but to listen to a whole Metallica album filled with B-Sides and all, ehhhhhhhhh. The first two songs were great, but by the time I got to the third song (The Things That Should Not Be), I wanted to skip it very badly. I wasn't vibing with it at all. There are moments in this album that definitely got me headbanging. But I feel like for every highlight in this album, there's usually a lowlight that follows it. Despire Master of Puppets being one of their most well known and renowned songs, I really enjoyed Orion, not because James Hetfield wasn't singing, but because the song made sense from start to end with no jarring changes. Which is weird for me to say since I'm into time signature changes and key changes and Progressive Rock/Metal where stuff like that happens all the time. Just the way that Metallica does it, it feels very... raw? forced? It doesn't flow well in my opinion. Overall, the experience of this album is a lot of energy and a lot of angst. Definitely skippable songs, but also some memorable parts to the album. 2/5 for me (which makes me wish I can change my R.E.M. - Murmur rating to a 1/5, because man that album was a snooze-fest)

Not really a fan. I don't know this genre except via Rammstein (who I much prefer on this evidence) though I was open to liking Metallica on the strength of the wonderful Nothing Else Matters. However, and this is just a personal thing, I find a lot of the high energy drumming and staccato guitar/high speed licks here just a bit monotonous, so I think heavy metal, which was barely a thing in my formative years, is just not for me.

not for me

I don't like metal

Albumi #11, 07.08.2024 Metallica ei ole koskaan kuulunut lempiartisteihini. Yhtyeen kolmas albumi lienee silti diskografian parhaasta päästä. 80-luvun hieman tunkkaiset trash-soundit yhdistettynä sinänsä jykevään metallimeininkiin on ihan hyvä yhdistelmä. Tuskin silti tämäkään Metallica-teos koskaan löytää tiensä omaan levyhyllyyni.

the songs are too long and similar to each other

Metallica-Sound ohne große Highlights 2/5

Exhausting!

Voces y ruidos. Molesto. Sin ritmo.

nonie dureglost paar mol es paar lieder glost aber kenns eig nöd. battery isch sehr so wienis erwarte. de breakdown isch etz no geil. aso instrumentale bridge teil. master of puppets findi etz nöd de song wo so legendär söll sii. er isch scho epic awesomesauce aber de hetfield nervt mi wenner singt. the thing that should no be machtstand jetz sit 5 minute die gliche zwei moves und s wird langsam chli langwilig. in deeefinitiv kein metallica guy. welcome home macht de clean metallica gitarre mit ere tonne chorus und de checki aber usch nöd so geil wie sie meined.

One of the \"big four\" thrash metal bands alongside alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. So, I learned that much. Not my genre. On the recording they are very tight and energetic, but still not my thing...

I may have groaned when I saw this come up. Metallica are the U2 of metal. There's so much projection of being the best without a ton to back it up in this. I do think there is some talent in the band but I dislike what they do with it. The instrumental song gets this away from a 1. I was thinking during it that it's hard to tell what makes Metallica suck more, the lyrics or singing.

Master of Puppets is a great song but I was dissapointed in the rest of the album. It all felt a bit flat.

Admittedly, I am not a huge thrash metal fan. Can listen to it in small doses in the right context. Didn’t find this album to stand out from other similar albums.

I like metal, but this is just a little to thrash for me. I like the black album, which i know would make true Metallica fans call me a poser and I am ok with that.

Loud, raucous, rattling, inspiring (if you’re seeking being energetic and angry. It’s a cool sound for 1986 and a good base layer for what Metallica would become. Master of Puppets is an epic one. I found myself loving the Orion instrumental, which gave them the freedom to be more sensitive without giving away their tough persona.

Don’t get me wrong this shit bangs at certain periods. But sir, why are you screaming in my ear?? 2.5/5

Hurts my ears, not for me

Not my bag

Yo no soy fan del Metal, pero bueno... Es un clásico.

This is the second Metallica record, I liked the first better than this one. The couple of songs that I know on this one are okay, but I lack the critical gene that allows me to discern much difference between their other less well known songs.

Everyone thinks hell is cool, that being a scary skeleton type guy that can play a guitar cool. Well guess what, not me.

If I was 15, it would get a 5. But I’m decades beyond that and the music feels very unnatural.

Probably a 2, doesn't really speak to me

If I was a metal fan I would probably listen to this.

Actually just sounds dorky. Hilarious that this defined/s any kind of “cool” for anyone.

I only listened to half and I am still not a big Metallica or heavy metal fan. I understand why people like them and the proficiency with their instruments is next level, but just not for me.

Outsde of Orion and Master of Puppets, not much to see, or hear here. Time to move along

It's all the same song. And not one that I like particularly much.

Alright

Heavy/Thrash Metal is another genre of which I never really felt the appeal. I have heard Metallica and other metal songs, but now is as good a time as any to dive in with a more open mind. While its still not really for me (outside of playing a one-off hit when apropos), there's some deeper cuts on the album I enjoyed more than the more popular songs (e.g. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" and "Orion"). At any rate, the riffs/solos are pretty sick, and the album is pretty tight and technical, which makes for an interesting listen. The lyricism is not so strong in my opinion. While I was surprised that I enjoyed parts more than I expected, I probably will not spend a ton of time re-listening or diving deeper into Metallica. Perhaps there are other metal acts that I'll find more interesting. **

Hilarious because there is one good song and it’s by the guy who died right after this album came out

D+ Battery 2 Master Of Puppets 2 The Thing That Should Not Be 2 Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 2 Disposable Heroes 2 Leper Messiah 2 Orion 1 Damage, Inc. 1 Borderline 1, but it barely squeaks into 2 range. Shiv will be proud, right?

Well, that was something. How people can claim this to be an enjoyable 55 minutes is well beyond me, but then, that’s what’s great about music I suppose! Not for me at all.

Definitely heavy, but more melodic than I expected

Ugh metallica

Dit is echt mijn muziek niet. Argressief geschreeuw, imponeergedrum, gillende gitaren.

I prefer the Black album. Wasn’t as much personality on this offering I felt.

There is some terrific guitar talent squandered here and a few spots with some musical layering and nuance, but mostly it's the fast loud drone I was expecting. I bet the live show is pretty spectacular - for a bit.

Enjoy the hits. MoP and Sanitarium are great. The rest all runs together. Appreciate what they were doing in the mid 1980s was very different. But speed guitar just isn’t my jam. 2.5

Master of Puppets Aside from Enter Sandman and Master of Puppets (the song) I’ve never really understood Metallica. Obviously they are in a genre I don’t particularly care for, so I’m not who they make music for, but of all the heavy metal/thrash metal I have ever heard they’ve always seemed the most boring. And Lars Ulrich always seems like a massive dildo. There’s not a great deal here to change my opinion. I do really enjoy the pomposity and unintended daftness of the title song, and there are moments where some of the guitars are good in a stupid way, but the relentless pounding of it all gets pretty tiresome. Two listens through really is enough. The lyrics are also really very bad. Thematically I get it but it’s such bad teenage drivel. I find rating these types of album really tricky and I’m pretty inconsistent with my scores as a result. On the one hand I don’t like the idea of dismissing a type of music just because I’m not into it - there are plenty of people who hate the types of music I’m into - so I try and look for the positives or merits within it’s genre and music in general. And on the other I then do wonder what that appeal and merits actually are, if you didn’t get into this music when you were 14. I get it’s a significant landmark in heavy metal and that its very popular so whether I like it or not isn’t really the point, but despite listening in good faith it’s a pretty tiring listen, particularly the 2nd time around. So within the albums we’ve had in this style, I preferred it to Pantera, but probably found Iron Maiden more fun. So it’s somewhere between a 2 and a 3 - I’ll plump for a 2 ⭐⭐️

urgh metallica is just like if you took all the swagger out of its punk precedents. like, "no jazz or reggae or latin and mediterranean beats, please. i want to see nothing but an infinite unchanging grid in my mind's eye." grooveless. and way too late in the game to claim much inventorship of hard rock sounds.. perhaps my view will change with time still, i liked the final two tracks, orion and damage, inc. pretty well, good songs to zone out to. and i admit that i agree about that episode of stranger things putting master of puppets in its right context. it is what it is!

Super disappointed with what I thought would be a really solid album. There is so little invention going on would these tracks. The likes of Master of Puppets starts well but the energy fades after 8 mins. There's just nothing that's grabbing me, even the solos feel fairly uninspired. There's a track or two here and there that manage some interest but it's hard to keep with all the tracks being so long. Mid.

Headbanger Rock mit Hang zum Überlauten.

I didn't enjoy this album as much I had expected to. Not their best.

so noisy

Obvious guitar talent and passionate singing (screaming) but not a fan of the…anything, really. Lyrics are a downer, no perceptible melody, had trouble telling when one song ended and another started. There is clearly a market for this, but I’m not it.

Not my favorite

I can totally believe this is the best heavy metal album on here. The playing is fast and tight, it's repetitive, and the lyrics were apparently written by a 13 year old. 2.5 🌟

i feel like this is the 4th metallica album we’ve been given. it’s most likely an album to hear before you die but not my fav genre

just not my vibe at all

As entered college this music never caught my interest. Still has little resonance to me.

Only is small doses

Not really my thing. Gave it a go and yeah in some moods there’s a good groove and some fine guitar work but I just can’t see myself ever choosing to listen to it.

Too grating loud messy! Not a fan

This is definitely an album for people who like metal, but not for me.

Not my style but I wouldn't skip a track if it came on a random playlist.

Didn’t finish it. A lot of the same sound. I like their earnestness but tire of the voice that renders melody meaningless.

Nothing special here.

Metallica halt! Master of Puppets ein frühes Album. Die großen Hits kamen später.

Listened to the title track and realized I was still listening like 10 minutes later. Definitely not my style and hate the lack of lyrics but I think it could be really fun to see this type of music live.

too bad these guys became such tools

Mäster, mäster - sit alamäkee

Little heavy to listen to at the office

I didn’t like Metallica going into this and it didn’t change my mind. Just not a heavy rock/metal guy.

Battery - 4 Master of puppets - 2 The thing that should not be - 2 Welcome come - 2 Disposable heroes - 3 Leper messiah - 2 Orion - 4 Damage Inc.- 2 2.62 Amazing technical ability, decent vocals (although not much range in this album) but way too repetitive for a continuous listening session. Each song individually would perform much better than the album as a whole.

Thrash trash?

Voces y ruidos. Molesto. Sin ritmo.

Just not a vibe. Better than justice for all...even if we've somehow ended up rating that one higher.

I could do without Metallica

Just not my scene.

Just too much for me. Apparently I can’t handle that level of rock and roll.

I don't know. I tried... 2

metal gonna metal

I get the sense of why this was important and is on the list, but this one just isn't my cup of tea.

I can see why it's an ultimate Metallica album. And i admire the driving guitar. What they do, they do very well. And i just don't care for it at all.

Liked 3.Welcome Home(Sanitarian) and 4.The Thing that should not be. Honestly thought heavy thrash? matal sounds like shit. Not all though. I'm actually not sure about Orion after a second listen and seeing a comment praising it.

oli vähä raju

Just what we all need. Angry white boys being loud. No notes. No benefits. No mercy. All that being said, they sort of teased me with "Battery", the opening track. It starts with a Zeppelin feel right before they realize they can't get out of their own way.

Very samey and too raw for me. The best song on this album is instrumental which is saying something. Stand-out: Orion

Mast of Puppets as a song was pretty rad but damn did the rest of the album not change a thing. Classics are classics and they got to start somewhere but man did this put me to sleep...

Man... so my dad played a lot of metallica while i was growing up. I knew I wasn't going to like this album but this was kind of painful for me to listen to. I like the influence Metallica brought to modern metal music. The guitar and drums in this album are amazing, but damn i hate the vocals so much D: Orion was my fave, no vocals.

My initial impressions of this album were not great. I was really struggling with this album til I got to Welcome Home. I felt most songs take way too long for any of the lyrics to be said and the music isn't interesting enough to carry the songs but maybe that's just my impression of metal as a genre in general. I enjoyed Welcome Home and Disposable Heroes has grown on me quite a bit. It is a great commentary on war and has the best lyrics of the album with a great guitar solo.

Ni oubli ni pardon (napster)
