Reviews (page 6 of 14)
Der Anfang war richtig cool, habs heut richtig gefühlt, der letzte Song ist einfach Wahnsinn. Es sind buchstäblich Kuh- und Furzgeräusche
Damn! What a ride! Expertise meets experimentation
The choice to open the album with a 10-minute improvisational guitar solo is...well, interesting. The rest of the album is very heavy for its time, yet also groovy funk rock. "Super Stupid" in particular is heavier than many hard rock songs of the era, amazingly. "Wars of Armageddon" could stand to lose the random sounds throughout the track. Overall, a solid album, though not quite masterpiece level.
10min guitar solo and fart sounds
Funky stuff.
Title track makes me want to smash. Need to listen to this while rolling
Loistava! Enemmän porge kuin funk, mutta jee hieno! 4/5
Progempaa settiä funkadeliciltä! 4/5
4.5 Solid find. Track 1 is going into heavyy rotation.
I do like it. It's not something I'd listen to every day (or month) but it is a fairly stunning hunk of music. Parliament/Funkadelic is funk/rock royalty, yah? But it's almost shocking how rock/rock this is, The musicianship is excellent. The lyrics are often too simple or repetitive, but the vibe is strong with this one. Overall, I like it, but as I said, I don't think I'll listen too many times. Just not sure When would be a good time for this as I don't really take a lot of acid. Without the stupid sound effects, "Wars Of Armageddon" would have been a total banger, too. But adding all the farts and cows and crap make it imminently skippable. Shame. Giving this a 4.2, which shows up here as a 4.
Stellar, but loses a point for the fart noises
3.8
124 Lo pasé bien escuchándolo? Sí Lo volvería a escuchar? Puede que no? Me hizo bailar y reir? Sí
Just jamming out over here
This took me a few tracks to warm up to, but it's a great album. Each song is different, the album has a great progression, and it left me wanting more. I doubt funk will ever be my favorite genre, but I appreciate this album's artistry. Favorite track: "You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks"
I've never listened to Funk Rock. I Rreally enjoyed this album. I went right back for seconds after I finished it. 👍Maggot Brain (probably more as I revisit)
Funkadelic indeed
Honestly cool album. Could do without the last song but the rest is good. First is pretty important too given RHCP knocked it off.
Funk classic
If you don‘t like this then you don‘t have soul, I don‘t make the rules
3.5/5
A fantastic concept album that is all killer.
Hit it and quit it is so good. Unlike its suggestion, I will be coming back.
George Clinton has an excellent claim to be the premier musician and bandleader of the 1970s, the man is very much not afraid to let his muse take him wherever the fuck it decides he's going.
Liked this one a lot. It's funk, it's rock, it's a good time. The guitar work is top notch; starting from the very beginning it grabs your attention and never lets go. At times it felt Hendrix-esque. The grooves and vibes are immaculate with the rest of the instrumentation too. There are some all-time great songs as the album goes, and it never gets boring. Also, I want to celebrate the album artwork a bit. What an image and title for the music here. Not sure if it's deeper than just a comment that the music is a proverbial ear worm stuck in your head. In this case, though, the worm is going to get in your brain and eat it up. I'm not complaining, for what it's worth (maybe the worm has taken control...). The biggest critique I have with the album is that there are two tracks that are essentially just long jams. They start and end the album, taking up close to 20 minutes of its runtime. I enjoyed both of them, but the album felt short since there were only 5 other tracks. I guess the real issue was that I wanted more. Overall: 3.8/5
Funky
A smasher title track on a good funky album
Just kinda fun.
A druggy, loud exploration into psych and funk. Eddie Hazel steals the show.
The instrumentals are fantastic, especially the guitar. I also love some funky bass (coming from a big Les Claypool fan). This album really surprised me. I didn't think I'd enjoy it all, but there were only two songs that I didn't exactly vibe with. I enjoyed a majority of them a lot, and I actually think this was the best funk album I've heard since Isaac Hayes. Really strong.
Prog you can dance to. Also, the best.
Very cool very funky PLEASE get this woman out of the dirt
Not gonna give five stars to an album with fart sounds, even if it's a psychedelic classic
Better than I was expecting 4 stars
Geogre
From Maggot Brain to Hit It and Quit It to the closer Wars of Armageddon: love how all over the place this album is.
Great craic
Class. I love the absolute jarring change of tone from the title song to the 2nd song.
A good percentage of this album is on my buckin playlist, so listening to this had me at half mast most of the day. Good shit, real solid baby makin' music.
Funky! The baby crying and farting noises threw me for a loop but otherwise I enjoyed this album a lot. It was surprising and also hilarious and also very danceable at points.
Bring on the funk!
Its just really interesting in every way, and insanely innovative for 1971! Its more 'progressive' than most prog rock stuff in the sense that every song feels like it develops, and even the really long one definitely warrants it being that long. I feel like guitar-wise (and a bit vocally) they very much pick off where Jimi Hendrix left off, and I feel like he absolutely would have done something like this had he lived. Some of the drum sounds are really interesting where it feels like they have a really short slap-back delay on them which makes them really metallic, and totally plays into the psychedelic thing, like on 'You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks'. I feel like the wah pedal and tremolo arm stuff is also very Hendrix, but maybe as its so close in time, the guitarist here was inspired with him, not by him. And obviously this era of music (and probably more obviously disco) had such an impact on hip hop stuff, as quite a lot of the drum sounds from here and other funk/soul stuff were resampled/recycled by 80s and 90s rap producers, as well as George Clinton being very tapped into (and featured on) lots of rap stuff many decades later. Favourite songs: all. Overall around 8/10 (maybe 9 idk)
Love me some Funkadelic. Could've done without the farts though.
Potent! This album is wildly varied and feels a bit unconnected, but there's a powerful rock 'n roll core and some great guitar work. Going to listen again!
dug it
Maggot Brain is one of my all-time favorite songs when I discovered it back in 2017. It will forever hold up. On top that song, this album has to be one of the most influential funk albums of all time, even if I don't love the second half. Best Songs: Maggot Brain, Can You Get To That, Hit It and Quit It Worst Songs: Wars Of Armageddon
The title song was perfect for me-- Pink Floyd prog rock with soul mixed in. The rest was solid soul. All great until the chaotic Back in our minds at the end. Still, generally good. 4/5
sooo good unfortunately the second half is kind of shit so it gets 4 stars. I think I’m pretty biased towards albums I have already listened to lol
short and sweet. amazing opening track. 8/10
Funky & cool
Super interesting soundscape.
I liked this! I can see why it's so iconic. I can hear some pink floyd in there.
Maggot Brain alone makes this a 4.
solid! funk funk funk funk funk funk funk funk funk funk
"Hey guys you know when you said that we had a stone cold classic 5 out of 5 star albums on our hands, and it'd be a shame if something were to mess with that?" "Yeah" "And remember when you said I wouldn't get any writing credits? "What have you done?" "I may have added some... bodily emissions..." "Wait. What?" "Farts! There are now fart noises on the final track. Farts. That is all."
3.5
3.5
I don't like "Wars of Armageddon", but the rest is cool. 4 stars
4.5
Title track is a true, startling, one-of-a-kind, oh-so anguished outpouring of searing guitar soul. Very wicked. Very scouring. Very influential. Very essential. The other tracks are pretty funky, stanky, sometimes rocksy but not nearly as essential even with the best of them. Ideal listening format of Maggot Brain really is repeating the title track 4 times over.
Title song is an all-time classic. Rest of the album is fun
Classic funk
Damn! First half is better than second, but that first half is great!
One of the greatest album covers ever! The title was amazing and the only reason I’m not going to settle down is the last song was just too much.
really solid music throughout, with can you get to that being the obvious star for me
Cool 70's funk album, more rock and roll than I expected.
I'll take "Albums that make me go 'Hell yeah' for $400, Alex.
This one is quite cool. Kicking off the album with a 10 minute instrumental track is a bit of a swing, but it works because the title track is just such a vibe. "Super Stupid" really stands out to me as pivotal even though I wouldn't say it's my favorite song. The track sounds like Jimi Hendrix and Rage Against the Machine all at once, while still having the feel of a bass forward funk track. This is a good example of an album that I enjoyed, that I otherwise would likely not have ever listened to on its own.
First 5 tracks are great, lots of variety and stellar performances. Track 6 is poor and shouldn't be on the album. Track 7 is a very good funky jam ruined with random voice/noise overs.
Awesome record with a few flaws - pacing is a bit strange with 10 min psych jam at the beginning and 8 min psych jam at the end but mostly short funky rock tracks in-between. The tracks in the middle are all stellar and the opener is great. I think the closer is strong but some of the sound effects are definitely a bit offputting. Ultimately there is too much strength here to go below 4
Cool album that is very funky. Love the keyboards and funky guitar especially.
Outstanding stuff. Beautiful guitar work, and fresh funky vibes all around: very impressed! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fun album, Glad it was recommended as i've wanted to get to it for a while. Clear to see the inspiration for awaken my love, would've been interested to listen to this first
first track seems dis attached from the rest of the project. very very solid funk album nevertheless and definitely very influential for its time. the drum samples and time stretching are a great addition and is done very tastefully
Oh they got the funk. Influence 5. Hits 3. Quality 4. I dig it, baby 4.
Two Funkadelic albums in three days. I liked One Nation Under A Groove better but this one is still really good. The funk/rock combo is awesome. After listening to these two albums I went down a George Clinton rabbit hole. It is amazing to me that as a fan of both rock and early hiphop I was totally unaware of P-funk. I feel like at some point after this project I'll have to listen to the entire George Clinton discography.
4.7
Guitar was amazing to listen too
Strangest opening ever. Otherwise great.
It was fun, upbeat and different. Great musicians in a step away from mainstream music of the times and well done.
Songs that are great for commercials or for getting high.
Did what it said on the tin. Lovely mix of funk and guitar. Thought Super Stupid was a brilliant track.
I’ve listened to maggot brain (the first track) so many times but had never given the rest a shot - they’re all class! Really enjoyed this
3.9/5 A really nice blend of Physch Rock and Funk, with an amazing opening track. The songs can kind of blend together and feel a little samey though.
I didn’t know Funky was chill like that.
Maybe little squirmy wormies in my head wouldn’t be that bad
I have more experience with Parliament than Funkadelic, and I think I prefer them, but this was still excellent
Very good funk album. The opening ten minute song is awesome, and the rest of the song follows suit fairly well. It's acclaimed for a reason, but I just didn't feel it kicked into the highest gear or was positively outstanding. Maybe it's a genre thing. That being said, it was still very good.
fun upbeat, get your day going energy
Några låtar som kändes riktigt bra
Lowkey don't know how to review this. Was too much going on I'll have to relisten and rereview at some point
4/5
Classic PFunk album. Some real bangers, bookended by some fun experimental tracks.
79/1001 Funkadelic - Maggot Brain Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ This is one of those albums where I kinda of want more. On listening today, as Spotify went to the algorithm, I was like "Is that all?". Psych, soul, rock all merge to form such a compelling and fun listen. Yeah there are moments that aren't for me, but they're rare. A really great album.
what a crazy album. I'm a little contrarian on this one as a pfunk fan though, I think the live version of the title track from one nation clears this version. not that this version is bad, it's still amazing, along with the classic can you get to that. good pick.
Sehr funky und Rocky. Erster Song sind keine lyrics. Gut für Weed und maybe Autofahrten.
Funky, great guitars, definitely a little weird and out there.
I expected more vocals, but it's still a fantastic album. The title track starts "Maggot Brain" with a bang. Most of the other songs are fine as well. After 30 minutes of seriousness, the last song ends with fart noises. I'm not making that up. 4 stars for "Maggot Brain".
Hell yea
Super, juste les deux dernières tunes que j'ai moins aimé, trop "bruyant"
Ispirato, seminale, caposaldo.
a classic
Thought I was in for a snoozer after listening to the first track, but was pleasantly surprised with the rest of the album. A fairly unique sound that kept my interest for the most part. Kind of lost interest with the last track, but the sandwich between the first and last track was good. True rating is 3.5, but better than most albums I've rated 3 stars, so I'll give a 4.
fun funk album with an unconventional guitar solo intro.
nevím jak se mi líbily ty desetiminutové písničky ale ok. Loved the rhythm
Had a low quality MP3 version of this, a long time ago. Always did like. Funky, lively, rocking, groovy, all that stuff! Heard before? Yes Owned: No. 9/1001, 9/42 (23%) Will I get? Yes
I liked everything except for the last song.
George puts the p in funk
This didn't grab me in the same way One Nation Under a Groove did, but I still enjoyed it quite a lot.
Pretty good.
I had never heard of this. I didn’t even know it was George Clinton on the first listen. Some tracks were a little long for me but it was definitely funky enough and weird enough to keep me listening.
Very rarely does someone get the chance to play a 10 minute long guitar solo with the only other backing being another guitar. The guy in the opener took that rare chance wholeheartedly and made one of the best guitar solos in funk, period. The cool part is they gave us a whole 26 minutes of bonus tracks following it. Jokes aside, the rest of the album is good, but that solo is transcendent. Power to the pussy.
very funky
I like how out of the gate this album isn't what you were probably expecting. Hey, let's hit em with a 10 minute guitar solo! The rest of the songs are greatness and had me thinking it was a solid 4* or maybe higher...and then the last song. Just didn't do it for me. Still rounding up to a weak 4* on the strength of the rest of the album. 3.75/5
Title track rules!!
Title track is awesome and easy to jam along with for 10m, final track random and hilarious, great album.
8.2/10 - great guitars and overall THE funk album, maggot brain (the song) is a 10/10
Had heard of funkadelic but did not know songs off the top of my head. Actually recognized a lot as I played this and also could hear the influence they had in Red Hot Chili Peppers. Great album!
Loved this. Great mix of music.
A real mind bender. I was expecting some straight up funk tunes, but instead what I got was a down & dirty psychedelic experience. I dig it.
>4
This record is absolutely wild. You can tell the musicians are really having fun making this music. Opening track is heartbreaking, while other songs like “Back in Our Minds” actually made me laugh. A really great listen.
Not my first time funkadelicing, but perhaps enjoyed it more than ever today. A slow grower mayber. Going 4 (for now).
Really enjoyed it - awesome cover and great album name. More psychedelic/ trippy than I was expecting -esp the opener. Fav track Can you Get to That. Will defn listen again - a high 4.
Highlights: Can You Get to That
Funktastic
Pleasantly suprised
really unique and interesting! super fun as well
Yavaş tempo kalite müzik. Süt gibi akıyo.
first song was like a stretched out pink floyd dark side guitar solo, really cool. second song is the full composition, verses hook, theme, very solid. last song is cool with the baby coos and protest audio overlaying the instrumentals. Overall this is exactly what I expect a masterful 70s album to sound like- trippy guitar, soulful organ, upbeat percussion.
Álbum sensacional! Muito bem feito. Celest Phoenixcall.
4/5 mostly instrumental
Hadn’t heard this before vcant beat a bit of funk. Will listen again
There’s a song with farts!
The title track is worth 6 stars.
Favorite Track: Can You Get To That
I like the concept : funk meets psychedelic. Made for a really entertaining listen with a surprising range of styles from minimalist, to blues and heavy rock. Did some reading about these guy's and it sounds like they were absolutely the real deal. I knew Parliament a bit and certainly the name Funkadelic was super familiar to me but digging deeper opens up this whole world of the P Funk Collective and Afrofuturism that seems limitlessly deep and full of lore. I think this is a great example of how music can shape and define a whole cultural movement and these guys deserve a ton of credit for being at the forefront of that wave.
Was having a good time, until we started shittin' and fartin' on the last track. I need someone to explain to me the inspiration there.
Perfect for work
I've previously been pretty unexposed to Funkadelic, but damn this album was entertaining. Shredding guitars with super funky parts. Very fun vocal melodies and harmonies. The bass is grooooooooovin. The lack of formal "structure" on this album makes it stand apart from others I would consider in similar genres. They also put some crazy filters on the drums that were interesting at parts, specifically You and Your Folks. I loved the fart section. Some of those sounded itchy... Mid to low 4
Great jam album with solid guitar tones; definitely heard samples used in more modern works.
Docked because of last track
really great album, had some sick fucking guitar riffs and overall was really good! There were some moments where i felt a bit bored, though. Also the farts at the end... what? It's a 3.5 but I guess I can only rate with multiples of 1. Alright.
Geeeetar
Really can tell they were going for that dark/ gothic vibe here 7/10
I own this one. The first track is so good for just closing your eyes, good set of headphones and just feel it on your brain. Can You Get to That is also pretty cool, things slowly go down from there, but not terrible. Still a great album. Cool cover, dynamic sound. Very close to a 5.
Funky as hell. This was headed for a 5 for me until we got to the last song where it went a bit off the rails and bumped this down to a 4. But that weirdness aside, I might come back to this album in the future.
remember when george clinton was in good burger?
The origin of … “Hit it and Quit it”
Just good music. Funky and improvisational, what more to want?
Perfect performances and production. Can only hear it here. There is no copying this act. Eddie Hazel was 17 when he recorded this. In lesser hands this would be tacky and inauthentic.
Pretty good!
Very good at carrying my heavy legs across wroclaw for coffee
😎
Such an icon of funk and soul. Cant help but bop your head for sure
Fun album and that solo from Eddie Hazel was fucking sensational
Old school funk. Kind of cool. Short album
A breath of fresh air
Great!
Well, this is rocky and raucous and funky as all hell - some very funky guitar going on. Fun stuff.
Good, the intro and outro are longer, and at times gets a little odd for odds sake, but the middle songs are all real good. Feels like a great album to sit and listen to on vinyl while it spins, to really feel it.
Weirdly the riffing and atmosphere is darker than I imagined out of this album, maybe because it reminds me of a sort of prototype of what most doom metal riffs would be like except with more distortion and wayyy slower. Obviously the riffs aren't everything when you have such cool grooves such as the ones in this album but the marrying of both here just make it a great time for me, definitely iconic
This was so fun??? Not something I'd normally choose but I had a blast listening to it.
4/5
A very pleasant and funky album.
That first track is majestic; the rest is a ton of fun.
The sharp exit from the transcendent, world altering title track into the acoustic guitar at the beginning of "Can You Get to That" is always so jarring; I want like 34 more seconds of silence or atmosphere. But since it's P-Funk, it more or less feels at home with their entire fun-but-scattered-and-inconsistent catalog. Still, there's nothing that could have followed the opening title track that would have felt worthy of its wake. Eddie Hazel made me feel the things all the elder statesmen said guitar music could make you feel. The rest of the album ranges from decent to pretty good, but "Maggot Brain" is a minor miracle.
Great rock sound, a bit of funk. Wars of Armageddon is a little more experimental; by the time the fart sounds came in, I wasn't even surprised.
Play it like your mamma just died. Man dude wrenches a lot of emotion from a pentatonic over three chords. Pretty sure you can trace a lotta of our current cultural collapse to the downward slide of the guitar in the popular mind from these heights to a bunch of instagram technique nerds. Love the cosmic funk rock ridiculousness.
Funky, brief, good Not great. Would relisten
Ahhhh yea the other big Parliament Funkadelic album, the last one was a few weeks ago. Mothership Connection. Both albums are great for different reasons, and to argue over which is better might be splitting hairs. This project is much heavier on the ideas and its willingness to push the envelope. Some craaaazy cool stuff going on here. An atmospheric opener into “Can You Get to That” which is just teeming with life in its vocal execution. “Super Stupid” stood out to me as a total jammer, the energy really started to pick up with this cut. A bit of Jimi Hendrix in the vocals if you ask me. And I suppose in the INCREDIBLE guitar solo at the end too! The opus is obviously “Wars Of Armageddon”, an imaginative, surely-drug-induced heater. The insane drum work, the riffing, the OUT THERE sound effects. This has it all. What a great blend of rock and funk and imagination and originality. While Mothership Connection hit me harder on first listen, I must give this album its flowers for boldly going where no one had gone before - and doing so with such pizazz! Great memories associated with this album. Strong 4/5, could be a 5/5 on some more listens
I enjoyed the first ~90%. Didn’t love the poop and fart sounds to end
Truly funkadelic
Loved until the fart sounds on the last song. Funk music is great
Bästa spår: You and your folks, me and my folks.
enjoyed it!
Their third album..Funk / Rock / Psychedelic / Soul. The opening track is a ten minute long piece of genius level guitar work from Eddie Hazel. Hit It And Quit It - Has a great funk sound. Super Stupid - Hell of a track! Hendrix esque licks ! This album is experimental, funky and book ended by two ten minute tracks. Plus there are even some farts lol !
Not something I would normally listen to but enjoyable.
Enjoyed. Love me some funk. Seems like it could be remastered to me, but wutta' I know.
Clásico. Entiendo y noto toda la influencia q ha tenido en la música.
4.5
Can certainly see how this influenced a lot after this.
Heeeeellllll yeah brotha man. The funk, the soul, the fart noises. Shit is super stupid good.
Hilariously, my first experience with George Clinton and Funkadelic was when they, as Parliament Funkadelic at the time, popped up in PCU (a great underrated movie). Never heard anything from them before that, nor have I listened to them since. This album was totally new to me and while I’m not surprised that I liked it, I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The solo that is the title track is a wild way to start an album - the way it bounces back and forth is killer. I guess this album is known for this solo, though the fact that it goes on for 10 minutes is a bit of overkill. All the same, a cool way to start off the record. The next three songs are, for me, the real high point of this album. Can You Get To That has some awesome vocals, especially the way the harmony works with the low and high voices that come in at different points. I loved Hit It and Quit It. This song just drives all the way through. Awesome. You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks sits in a great groove. Though it felt like a large departure from the prior song, I thought the contrast totally worked. At this point, I was totally sold on this album. Unfortunately, things waned a bit from there for me. Super Stupid is better than the title, but I didn’t connect with this as much as the last 3, even if the guitar work in this was great again. Back In Our Minds is best described as a very bent song. It’s psychedelic in nature and while it wasn’t my favorite, I could appreciate the musicality of it. Meanwhile, Wars of Armageddon bookends this album with another roughly 10 minute track and though I liked it more than the opener, it goes on a bit too long too. Still, a good jam. All tolled, this wasn’t something I would listen to over and over again front to back, but it was still a great listen with a series of songs I really liked. Fact is, I have been missing out all this time.
Like it much more than I was expecting
Funk at its finest. Groovy and awesome.
This has one best album covers of all-time! Although I had never actually listened to the album until now, I'm very familiar with the album cover which has stoked my curiosity for years. Not much for lyrics, but these songs pack a lot of badass funkery. This is a feel-good vibe record that will go firmly into my regular rotation.
I mean it’s alright
The title track reminds me of "Cortez the Killer." I know this is an extremely iconic funk album and it's for good reason. The vibe is all over the place but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I think this is one of those albums that need multiple listens to fully grasp what's going on, but from initial listen, two thumbs up.
Great funk!
Legendarisk åpningsspor! Flott blanding av funk og psykedelia
Very good. I don't have a lot to say cuz im tired but its pretty good 9/10
Really really liked it, the guitar on maggot brain the track was amazing, super stupid and can you get to that are both top tier, the triangle on back in our minds was kind of trippy but fun nonetheless.
fire album tbf give the electric guitar player a raise because they be cooking. Overall pretty good 7/10
Very good first two songs and enjoyed the rest of the album.
Really really close to giving this a 5, this is such a cool album with each song doing something new or interesting, just have 5s which I'd reach for first but had a blast
Definitely funky. Slow burn. Childish Gambino definitely got some ideas from here. Super Stupid is a bop.
There's something special about this album. The opening track and it's incredible guitar solo hooked my straight away. This would almost be at home if it was released today, there's something timeless about it. I recognized the source of a sample in a song i like (Rill Rill by Sleigh Bells) in the second track.
In one's next life, one will write a dissertation how Maggot Brain is basically a Walt Whitman poem, containing multitudes in a time of societal turbulence and showing so much of what's wonderful, weird and wicked (cool) about America, inclusive of folk and funk, gospel and rock. Which is one's way of saying this is a holy mess, rocking sprawlingly and pleasingly and all-over-the-placingly.
Not familiar with the band or album before, but there is something about the front cover that feels familiar. Was so encapsulated by the first song. Really grabbed me and pulled me in to every note and the general reflexive flow. Immersed for the full 10 minutes and felt like a flash. Great sound, arrangement and energy throughout. Also pretty trippy too. Great album. Varied, engaging, accomplished.
First song starts the album off amazingly. I'm already digging it. After finishing the album, I still liked it a lot, but definitely enjoyed the first half more than the second half. 4.5/5
Really good loved it. Guitar playing fantastic.
I had a great time listening to this album. Mind melting guitar and an iconic riff in Can You Get to That. Really cool
What a total banger. Really enjoyed this
Eddie Hazel was one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and the titular Maggot Brain song is a testament to that. As great as the band is, part of the psychadelic exploration will eventually lead you to fart noises and explosions.
Great album! I listened to it twice. Much deeper and varied than I was expecting.
Pure funktastic magic
Rocky, proggy mid tempo funk? Interesting. Could be influence to RHCP or even RATM? Chunky nice basslines Best track - You and Your Folks, Super Stupid, Back in Our Minds 4 stars
Hard to top Can You Get to That, but the rest of the album is a lot of fun too. I generally enjoyed the whole thing, and it was a good fix of funk and psychedelic rock. Definitely zoned out a bit more during some tracks, but it didn't take away from the album
I was already familiar with this album when it came up. The title track is excellent, and the album is good overall. Some of the other tracks are forgettable but overall it's worth a listen for the title track alone, which has some of the best guitar work I've heard by any artist.
earfeast
Very good album, with absolute bangers on it which is half of this 7 song masterpiece, probably the best 7 song album ever. 4/5.
Fav(s): You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks
Such an iconic album cover. It’s a good thing that it’s backed up by being a pretty great album as well. Effortlessly groovy with guitar playing potent enough to melt off entire faces. A delight to revisit this one.
This album exceeded my expectations in every way possible. Every song is a banger. I never knew I liked funk this much. Highly recommend, great experience.
This is what I signed up for. An album I had no knowledge of prior and now have a love for.
Hearing the guitar riff on "Can You Get to That" was a fantastic surprise because I'm super familiar with "Rill Rill" by Sleigh Bells. This album is definitely funky and so smooth, overall.
Great P-Funk album. Eddie Hazel's captivating solo on the title is definitely the stand out moment of the journey, however Hit it and quit it and Super Stupid are also timeless tracks. Lively album which reflects the psych-funk infused protest music of the time. 4.5/5
Not the album I expected but really enjoyed it!
I really liked most tracks. Pure funk. But the long jams were annoying so it loses a star
Weak 4. Didnt get carried away but a good listen
Not really my cup of tea, but they are great.
It slaps
I dig it
Really liked this, it starts off strong and mystical and keeps you locked in. 100% a relisten, the final three tracks didn’t grab me as hard as the first part of the album, but might grow on me. I was really surprised by “You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks”, definitely a highlight.
I loved this album, even the first track, Maggot Brain and its 10-minute repetitive guitar solo! I really enjoyed the use of stereo spacing on this track. The rest of it was nonstop funk! Loved it!
First time listen and I really loved this! Probably the first time in this challenge I've said that for a funk album. This felt a little more rock X funk? I especially loved the opening track, even though I've complained before about guitar solos that go too long, that doesn't seem to apply if the whole track is a solo! I'm giving it a 4, but it might end up being one of those I later regret and wish I'd given a 5!
Cool funk psychedelic album!
Heard it before. It's nice to go back to it after some time 4/5
Very good album. Great musicians worked on this and it shows. Not everything is as nice as i would like to. I remember fucking hearing diarrhea sounds somewhere on this album, which seemed excessive 😅. Still a very good album and deserving of a very strong 4/5
Epic
Funktastic. Unpopular opinion: kinda wish title track didn't kick this one off. 4/5
Nice, 4/5
Tight high concept jazz, amazing it’s as old as it is
I enjoyed this album for background music as well as the instrumentals. Would listen again.
I’ve put off writing this review because much like (Parliament) Funkadelic’s other entry on this list, this album is really just better experienced than talked about, but to leave my review at that felt like a cop out. For starters, I think the opening title track is one of the most emotive, expressive, moving guitar songs ever recorded. It feels like an entire universe is contained within this song. Honestly I kind of just wish the album stopped here and it would be a perfect 10/10 no notes. The mood change to the next track, “Can You Get to That”, is whiplash-inducing, but the second track is so good and so fun with such an infectious groove that I can’t be too mad about it. I just wonder if it might’ve been better placed somewhere else on the album. I dunno. “Hit It and Quit It” and “Me and My Folks…” are definitely cut from the same cloth as track 2, but I find them to be a bit of a disappointment. I think they’re just a little too similar but not nearly as good and kinda just fall into the realm of forgettable funky jammy rock type stuff to me. “Super Stupid” I can enjoy a lot more if I really force myself to contextualize it in its place in music history, but again, just for what it is, it’s kinda too far down the sorta funky festival jam band type thing for me to really enjoy. Which is kind of not fair because I think P-Funk and specifically this album did a lot of heavy lifting in originating that sound and I respect that a lot. I’ve just heard so much of it in my life that it takes a lil something peculiar within that style to hold my interest. Things get a bit more interesting again with “Back In Our Minds”. Lastly we close out with “Wars of Armageddon”… frantic, dizzying, recursive, always returning to such a strong rhythm section. Fantastic guitar and organ parts. The audio collage craziness I think really conveys the mood of america in 1971, which was that things are chaotic and senseless and confusing. And yet we funk on, until the atom bomb drops. Is it a bunch of drug-addled noodling jam sessions? Is it a complex statement of a cultural ethos at a moment in time as expressed through the defining players of a burgeoning style of music? I guess it depends on who you ask. Maybe a bit of both. I think there’s definitely a lot going on that contextually I’m too far removed from to really appreciate, or just isn’t really my thing. BUT the opening and closing tracks, plus the fun and funky bonuses of “Can You Get To That” and “Back In Our Minds”, easily carry this to a solid 4 ⭐️ for me.
This really surprised me, in a good way. I have never listened to this band before but found the opening track to me mindblowing. It lost one star just as the rest of the album, while great, didn't live up to the first tracks potential.
Insane sad emotional guitar riff to open and then just drops some funk. Super high energy when funky with amazing grooves and vocals. This is my favorite discovered album on this so far
It was fun and groovy 6/10
Crunchy guitar Liked the boingy thing in "Back in our Minds"
The title track makes this album.
Can’t believe this is 71, feels really ahead of its time, not only as a funk record but rock as well. Every song on here was good although I wasn’t a massive fan of the last one, partly because of the interesting but artistic choice, I’m sure, of putting fart noises and such in it. The first track was a great long introduction and had a really great Hendrix style solo intertwined with a smooth arpeggio and was followed by “normal” length songs which were just great funk songs. Overral, a high 4 (8/10)
It was quite good
Jävligt bra. Hade kunnat vara utan första och sista låten men då blir det väl kort. Men en fyra ändå
Great. Enjoyed it
Not what I expected. With a name like that, you'd expect something more funky. This is more psychedelic with a touch of funk. Pleasant surprise. Favorite song: back in our minds
Great listen. The percussion really drives this album. Very groovy, I really enjoyed it.
Maggot Brain 4.4 Can You Get to That 3.8 Hit It and Quit It 4 You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks 4.2 Super Stupid 4.3 Back in Our Minds 3.8 Wars of Armageddon 4 Score: 4.071428571
Loved large parts of the album but to very long songs that really could be edited to something more palatable.
Perhaps the most aptly named band yet, this is indeed funkadelic! Really cool and went harder/heavier than I expected. Don’t love some of the sound effects in the latter part of the album but most of it was jammy.
The Reverse of the Marley album - failed to engage with the two longer tracks but loved the shorter ones - Can You Get To That is an absolute beast of a song..
There’s only so much George Clinton I can do before he loses me, luckily this was quite a short album and the opening, titular track is a stand alone song very different from what I’d anticipate from p-funk. Clearly lots of substances being consumed during the making of this record, loved the jam on the final track. This was generally a 3.5 for me, but Maggot Brain is an exceptional song. Wild guitar licks, emotive, powerful and unexpected, and for that alone it edges up to a 4.
Track 1: Those guitar riffs are landscapes. They are so real they are not even sound landscapes. Makes me think of the desert. There is something unsettling, even dangerous about it - the other part of it is melancholic. Track 2: At times gospel choir like - not a fan of the deep male voice. Love ~ Money / Credit Track 3: Groovy. Not a fan of the singing. I love the melodies though. Track 4: A musical embrace. Incredibly moving. Somewhat. Somehow. Track 5: Rocks and groovy. So danceable. Landscape again. Track 6: No fan of the singing. Repetitive. Makes me tired. But maybe it’s because I’m tired. It’s almost 3 am. Track 7: obscure. Incredible. What is this? I’m moved to another planet / landscape once again. I have never heard anything like this. A tour de force I guess.
хз похоже на какой-то психоделичный фанк, вроде прикольно 4
A solid psychedelically infused funk album. 8.9/10 Best Track: “Can You Get To That?”
It's a fuckin journey my guy.
# Album Name: Maggot Brain # Artist: Funkadelic # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Maggot brain - wow, what a great track. That guitar work is FIRE. The live version is EVEN better. Check it out on YT. Theres some other good tracks on here like hit it and quit it, you and your folks, super stupid. Some great funk beats and rhythm all round. I enjoyed it. # Top Tunes: Maggot brain, hit it and quit it, you and your folks, super stupid # Would I listen to it again? Yes
Nice..... Maggot Brain, Hit It and Quit It, Super Stupid and Wars Of Armageddon - right the funk on!
Title track has one of the best guitar solos of all-time on it. The rest is cool too.
Going back to this is always a guaranteed blast!
The first track is one of the most beautiful thing ever recorded. The next 6 songs are a great ride of fun and groove.
It was all going so well until the fart noises at the end
All prog rock type albums are ruined at some point by weird samples. 2 minutes of crying did it here
Fantastic smooth guitar.
Great
They're having a good time, I'm having a good time, everyone's happy. Real good stuff
Super fun funk album. Weird choice to start with a waltzing lullaby that has a shredding guitar solo over the top but I liked it. Than the other songs are great until you have the that heavily features the flex-a-tone followed by the song with the persistent cowbell… but I’d spin this album again when I’m looking to get funked.
This album was… verrrry interesting? The first song, “Maggot Brain,” was otherworldly sounding, if that makes any sense. It was pretty cool, in my opinion. I liked a lot of the other songs on the album, too, except for the very last one, which was “Wars of Armageddon.” It was a shame I didn’t like that one since the name of the song intrigued me the most. However, I absolutely can’t stand the sound of babies crying or flatulence, so the song ended up just annoying the hell out of me. Despite that, I still thought the majority of the album was good. It had a dreamy vibe to it, which I liked.
God I needed this today. After a long string of meh albums with very few highlights, none of which were rock, it was about time to hear some face melting guitar. I love the funk - rock sound of this. Although not a perfect album, it rightly deserves its place in history.
Every single funkadelic album that is recommended to me is both completely insane and also pretty damn good. This one is no different.
Off-putting name, placed in an off-putting genre (funk-rock), but I thought this sounded great and was thr product of a fearless band.
приятный фанк, не успевший набить оскомину
The album artwork has always slightly scared me. But the actual album is far different from the picture to promote it. I fell into the grooves and had a great time listening. 4/5
all over the place stylistically but somehow still coherent. loved all the fart sounds
One of the first times I ever got really really high, my buddy told me to go sit on the bed, then he put on the title track and turned off the lights. I was sobbing within a minute.
Mark has been telling me to listen to this for years. I think I did once, I was certainly familiar with most of the tracks this time. It’s really good. There was a couple of tracks that didn’t work for me. But overall I can see why it’s such a classic album. I really need to investigate Parliament / Funkadelic a lot more. 4.5 stars!
Maggot Brain track alone makes this an instant classic…. and the rest is good as well.
Great vibe. Tunes seem more individual than an album journey. Though I probably just need to listen more be I understand how the tracks link
Maggot Brain (song) alone is one of the finest songs I've listened to. The mix of the simple riff with some of the finest guitar playing I've heard makes for epicness. Honestly, I think they should have just made that song 30 minutes and this would have been a 5* album. The rest of the songs are fun but not at the same level. Can You Get To That being my second choice. 4* Listened to this on the Champs-Elysees after my class at Petit Palais was cancelled. Walked all the way up, and after switched on some Isley Brothers. Arc and all!
That was quite an experience. I was not expecting a 10 minute guitar solo as an opening track. Lots of rock elements as well, not just straight up funk. Very talented musicians.
George clinton always confused me like wasnt he a president Power to the pussy
I have a soft spot for psychedelic funk/soul. Since I wish there was more of it, I look kindly upon what there is. (21 known/33 new)
Rating: 8.5/10 So damn funky...and progressive.
psicodelia braba
The Good: George Clinton The Bad: George Clinton The Ugly: George Clinton I could have sworn that this album had appeared on the list before, however, it seems that the maggots are in my brain… I didn’t like it… I didn’t dislike it… Main problem I had with this album was that, when listening to it for a second time, it started to drag on me… Still, I am going to be a bastard and give the album 4*...
one of the all time greats
Didn’t really know what to expect with this one. I thought it’d be a funky, disco type thing, similar to say Earth, Wind and Fire or Kool and the Gang. I was not expecting the opening track to blow me away like it did, that was genuinely transcendental. Idk if I used that word right but it’s the closest word I think of for it. The album got a little worse as it went on but it was still very solid!
funky
Surprised how much I enjoyed this one. Filled with hot noodle and funky basslines - return to relisten at a later date. Title track is a banger!
I dig it
Classic funk goodness
Solid album. I recommend!
Previously rated: One Nation Under A Groove (3/5) ************************************** There were a couple of 10 minute tracks, but thankfully they weren't poop-themed like on the other album. Good variety of sounds, it's funky and kind of out there. I can dig it.
