Reviews (page 5 of 14)
Funky, pretty good.
A bit more focused than their later work - and I actually missed the randomness of the 2nd album. Weird to listen to that first. But they were on a mission with this album. They had some shit to say. Highlights: Hit It and Quit It, Back In Our Mind
Before I rate this lower than I would like to, I want to make it clear it’s not a decision taken lightly. I’m a long term fan of P-Funk and I am the proud owner of all Funkadelic’s albums (plus all Parliament, Clinton solo, Allstars, Booty solo, you get the idea). I love this album but I think it is overrated. I understand how easy it is to be blown away by the title track, but I believe there are far too many albums in the 1001 that earn their place with too much emphasis on a particular song. “That has to be the album that goes in the book because it’s the one that includes [insert megahit/track of major cultural significance]”. This often happens at the expense of a superior album by the same artist. Isn’t this whole thing is supposed to be about ALBUMS? “Maggot Brain” (the song) is obviously amazing and is a bold statement, but the rest of the album actually feels like a little bit of a backwards step compared overall with the two albums that preceded it. Funkadelic had already strongly established their psyche-rock credentials before this and although the title track here pushes things psyche further, the supporting material seems a little bit slight. I enjoy the whole album, but would quickly point to the follow up America Eats Its Young as a much more fully realised statement of everything Funkadelic was capable of at the time. I was even considering giving this 3* but as a huge fan, I cannot in all conscience go that far. I was closer to that 3 though than ever considering giving it 5* which would definitely be possible with some other George Clinton joints. Hero!
Funkadelic indeed. What an album cover too, wtf. 4/5
Great stuff! I love music that is weird and pushes boundaries, but isn't weird for weird sake.
Nice soul. The song Maggot brain is in my opinion a real masterpiece. The rest simply good.
The title track is one of the great recorded guitar performances in American music, full stop. Eddie Hazel playing a ten-minute solo over a spare backing — reportedly after George Clinton told him to play like he'd just been told his mother had died — delivers exactly that. It's devastating, searching, and completely inhabited in a way that transcends genre or era. Give it headphones and your full attention and it will stop you in your tracks regardless of what you normally listen to. The rest of Maggot Brain is a different proposition — enjoyable, groove-forward Funkadelic that rewards listening without reaching the same altitude. The range is real and worth acknowledging: "Can You Get to That" arrives as an unexpected acoustic gospel-folk piece that sounds like it wandered in from a completely different record, "Super Stupid" turns the whole thing toward heavy rock, and the closing "Wars of Armageddon" descends into controlled chaos. George Clinton clearly had no interest in making a conventional album, and he succeeded. But the honest experience is a transcendent opening track followed by music that's genuinely enjoyable without consistently matching what came before. It's almost the inverse of the James Brown Apollo situation — there the performance deserved five stars and the recording got in the way. Here the recording is fine and the title track deserves five. The album around it honestly earns four. A strong four anchored by one of the most extraordinary guitar performances ever committed to tape.
Loooved, listened to this while driving at night, brilliant
I am more familiar with George Clinton's jazzier and R&B brand of funk in Parliament. This album feels like a natural progression from Jimi Hendrix's psychedelic jams and Sly Stone. Cool freakout guitar solos. Would not mind spinning this on vinyl in the background on a summer's weekend.
I get this is legendary but I’ve tried so hard to click with it. It just hasn’t connected. Still amazing.
This is why I’m doing the challenge. Never considered listening to this before. 4 stars, maybe 5 after a few more listens.
This trippy funk/rock album is really good! George Clinton driven who was influenced by Frank Zappa's weirdness. The opening track is a 10 minute Eddie Hazel acid rock jam and the last song is a weird jam with random sounds. The middle tracks are funk, soul and doo wop with good keyboards. Super Stupid surely influenced Living Colour and Lenny Kravitz.
Pleasantly surprised with this one 4/5
Very cool album, lots going on Standout songs: Maggot Brain Hit it and quit it Wars of Armageddon
This is a classic for a reason. So many guitar players decades after this came out have covered Maggot Brain, it's a staple
it’s very good
a Rodrigo de 18 años le hubiera fascinado este álbum de inicio a fin.
Thought this was pretty fun; enjoyed it.
I enjoyed it a lot, everything was really cool but I only really see myself coming back to the more fun songs like Hit it and Quit it or Can you get to that
I was not offended.
Pretty good
Cool. I was actually surprised when the album ended because it seemed to be over in a flash. Some fun stuff, some stuff which didn't quite work, but it's all just cool, so you've got to enjoy it.
Could have been a five for me if it wasn't for all the fart noises on the last track
More rock and less funk than I expected
Love! I hadn’t heard of this and the album title killed me and the cover intrigued me and it’s been lovely. Hot AF day, depression has set in at overdrive after an overstimulating somewhat disappointing weekend, and this was much needed. Lovely for walking Augie. Would probably love it even more if it wasn’t the day I was prescribed lexapro for the first time since grad school.
Love this album. Plain and simple. The band name tells you exactly what they are going for with their sound, and it perfectly describes it. I want to focus on the song Maggot Brain. While not a typical opener, it is such a beautiful song and one can't help but get lost in the slow groove of it all. In a world where every one wants immediate, this one never really gives any hint that you are going to get an aural payoff. This song builds beautifully at its own pace and i enjoy getting lost in it all. The rest of the album follows more traditional funk sound and keeps you around to the very end. Biggest Hit - Maggot Brain Biggest Miss (if I had to choose) - Back In Our Minds Hidden Gem - Super Stupid
Very cool album. I really enjoyed it.
Favourite Songs: Maggot Brain Hit It And Quit It You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks Super Stupid
Classic, love it
Good guitar instrumental, kinda experimental
I know George Clinton as a funk icon but almost none of his actual music, so I'm glad I could finally dig in. This is pretty much what I expected: epic and stuffed with ideas. The bleakness took me by surprise. "Wars of Armageddon" alone is a 10-minute bum-out of a song, but is oddly comforting in how relevant it feels now. "You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks" is the standout for me, and this all but requires repeat listening to fully absorb.
“Play like your momma just died.” And he did. Eddie Hazel acid-drenched guitar heroism aside, this is all kids of fun and yet also plenty more than fun.
Thought I was going to be in for a rough ride when it started with a monologue, but it was actually great. Would be 5 if it had managed to maintain it for the whole album, but it dropped off a bit, at least for me.
Excelente álbum, el mejor solo de guitarra que escuché hasta ahora. Medio raro pero ese es el aspecto psicodélico del grupo.
> the Beatles
Classic funk record, title track is of course amazing but the other songs here are pretty catchy as well
Distorted guitars and funky beats? Yes please! Favourite Track(s): Maggot Brain, Hit It and Quit It Least Favourite Track(s): Back In Our Minds
This album is a total game-changer, pushing the limits of rock, soul, and funk. "Maggot Brain" kicks it off with Eddie Hazel's insane, 10-minute guitar solo, the whole thing is this wild, trippy ride, going from the crazy, mind-bending title track to smooth, funky jams like "Can You Get to That." It's a bit all over the place, going from easy listening funk-rock to the weird, out-there "Wars Of Armageddon" (seriously, fart noises and cuckoo clocks!), but the musicians are incredible. It's like a quick, awesome acid trip that you can't really put in a box, and it totally makes Funkadelic one of the best rock bands ever. It's still super influential and mind-blowing, even now.
Sweet
Incredible guitar playing
goddamn i really love this i feel like im getting blessed by listening to the first song. but the rest isn't as good - I mean that it doesn't stand up to the standards set by the maggot brain.
Excelente
I really enjoyed this album
Would have been 5 if not for the sound effects on Wars of Armageddon
funky, good riffs, awesome
The first track is incredible, of course, and I love how many cool sounds they packed into this album. Definitely gets a bit slower on the second half, but whatever. Lots of interesting stuff in here, and it all sounds great too.
Maybe one of the strongest Side Ones of all time. I remember the first time hearing the title track and feeling something unlock in my brain. All of the other songs on this side rule in their own, specific way. It's incredible shit. And then you flip the record and "Super Stupid" kicks it off with a strong, but basic rocker, maybe a little too much cribbing from Hendrix, still super fun though and that guitar solo is superb. Then it's "Back in Our Minds", and it seems like a silly goof before the record gets back on track, but then "Wars of Armageddon" comes, which is a repetitive funk riff and some (literal) farting around. I'm not one to be completely down on experimental uses of fart noises in music, but there is a promise this record establishes that it doesn't quite execute on in the back half. Alas. But that Side One though....
Funky! Likes: Maggot Brain; Can You Get To That; Wars of Armageddon
Never heard of album or group. First song is sampled by Kendrick so I like that. Cool enough song. Really good guitar. Sound engineering a little off. Can you get to that is a banger. Commercial song. Still hits. Greta production and singing. Love the keyboard on hit and quit it. Again great production. Lyrics lack substance. Much better lyrics on you and your folk. This album is my type of music. I hate what’s going on with back in our minds. No need for the bells. Good song otherwise. Love the horns at the end. I like the armehgedon beat a lot but I don’t like the baby crying. Gives me anxiety. Guitar is so good again. Farts at the end are weird but overall it’s a cool song. Super well made album. Ahead of its time. 3.5/5 stars
It was pretty good. I don't usually listen to funk but I liked it
- scary album cover - first song was so good and the rest were decent - fun sounds - would probably listen again - very unique album
Some early 70s psychedelic is so much more intense than the hard rock of the time and it seems like it took so long to wrap back around to that intensity. Not a fan of the fart sounds though. Highlights: "Can You Get to That", "Super Stupid", "Wars of Armageddon"
I didn't even mean to listen to this album today, but once I started this album I was basically entranced and could not stop listening. This project is wicked when it wants to be and can also be a bit way too goofy for its' own good *cough* *cough* Wars of Armageddon. I didn't realize just how many iconic moments stem from this project whether it is lyrics, killer instrumentals, or even sampled material on some of my favorite songs. This is an album that requires you to have done at least some kind of drug or psychedelic in the past to get a better understanding of because this thing is a trip to any straight edge person I can promise you that. Even if I don't consider this a "classic" album in my eyes I can still appreciate the absolutely insane artistry on full display thanks to George Clinton's leading charge into this very bold and timeless piece of music. Maggot Brain is an album everyone needs to hear, and while it may not be the easiest first listen in the world, it is still a very rewarding listen nonetheless.
Just really cool
Another band I’d never heard of but the write up sounds good. The album has also started really well with opening track “Maggot Brain”, really like the arrangement. This was a surprisingly nice discovery, albeit one that felt it was over before it really began with quite a short run time, and with two of its 7 songs amounting to half of that time! I enjoyed this, although am not sure how often I’d listen to them as I don’t listen to that much 60’s/70’s rock on the whole. That said - I’ve just thrown on another of their albums (America Eats Its Young) to see how that is.
I liked the album, got heavy whiplash vibes, and elements of soundtrack from shrek. The first song was a 10 minute instrumental only song, and so was a different vibe to all of the other albums so far. Least favorite song on the track was the last one, wars of Armageddon as it was a little strange. Overall 8/10
transgresor, pionero
Like the cover and most of the songs on this actually but the last one really brings it down. Just too long and too weird. Specific rating - 4.0 Fav song - can you get to that Least fav - wars of armageddon
Maggot Brain- 9/10 (I hate rating instrumentals) (fave) Can You Get To That- 9/10 (3rd) Hit It And Quit It- 9/10 (insane subject for a 70’s song I assumed this would have been hella Controversial when it came out) (2nd) You and Your Folks, Me And My Folks- 10/10 (1st) Super Stupid- 10/10 Back In Our Minds- 7.5/10 Wars Of Armagendon- 7/10 (the sh*tt*ng noises were not necessary)
Buen contraste del inicio y del fin
Amazing
Other than the intro and outro, it was a really great album (not that I disliked the two, just that they overstayed their welcome)
Another I want on vinyl
Fun psychedelic rock album. Quirky
Wish the rest was as strong as its mind-melting bookends, but it's still great.
Super funky. Also, I had an ear worm tickle as I listened to the song “Can You Get To That” and realized the band Sleigh Bells sampled/interpolated the track on their song “Ril Ril.” I always love discovering the originals like that.
Can You Get To That is one of my all time favorites
Another interesting album.
10 Minuten Gitarrensolo ist bold und bei mir nicht angekommen. Sonst richtig gut auch wenn ich genau davor Jimi Hendrix gehört habe
Maggot brains and Back in our Minds (not on mono headphones) I really enjoyed. Last song lost me
Album a mixture of rock, funk, riffs, voices (so many voices!) and joy. Reminiscent of The Band here and there, but with loads of fuzz... drummer is mental. Did this band help to inspire the Muppets house band? Last track is mental but the beat doesn't stop - percussion is epic!
I am just a sucker for that late 60’s/early 70’s analog sound. This record sounds fantastic. Has a loose concept about it. Some stellar instrumentation. I can definitely understand why some may not love it, but I’m a big fan. Just some cool, experimental, psychedelic, far out funk rock. 4/5
I give 4 stars but it should be more because it's a very complex and experimental album
The title track alone is a fucking masterpiece and is worth 5 stars on the spot. The rest of the album isn't - despite being very imaginative and influential. I have listened to Maggot Brain - both a song and an album - a lot prior to this, and I always come to this conclusion. Therefore let's give it 4 stars.
I feel like I’ve seen this album so many places but never listened to it. I see why it has so much hype. It’s bookended by two really interesting instrumental pieces and then the middle is fun/funky songs. I feel like every relisten would be a new experience. Great one! Top Songs: Can You Get To That, Hit It And Quit It, Maggot Brain, Super Stupid
oprecht een leuk album
Maggot Brain - длится 10 минут 20 секунд и почти не содержит текста, но как же цепляет. Почувствовала такую какую-то первобытную взволнованность и интерес. Определенно 10/10! Остальные треки альбома тоже хорошие, но не цепляют
The name Maggot Brain is pretty creepy, but maybe I’ll make listening to that title track a Halloween tradition. I can only describe it as the sick nasty. Unfortunately, the final track takes sick nasty literally, and presents poopie to the people. Literally, why would you do that? It’s like I can smell these farts forty years on! Automatic detraction after that last track!
Come's out of the gate with some killer jams. Tails off a bit at the end but P-Funk always hits the spot.
These guys can rock. I really liked the first song 'Maggot Brain', the guitar is on point for me. Did not enjoy the last song so this cannot be a 5 for me. Solid rock album, definitely belongs to this list.
Loved it. This is the kind of album I wanted to listen to when I joined this site. Funk, guitars shredding, weirdness, cowbells, what’s not to like. Wished it was a longer album.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALBUM COVERS OF ALL TIME SO COOL honestly really captivating album. love the guitars, love the vocals. It feels very complete and out there love it
Muuuuy buen instrumental. No hubiera conectado con este tipo de música si no fuera por este sitio.
Came into it not expecting much, came out amazed. The guitar solo in the title track was such a vibe and I loved it. The only reason I gave it a 4 is because it would serve more like background music then something I would actually listen to.
Starts so strong but falls off until I can’t really listen to it anymore.
More -delic than funk, but still pretty good
I love the opening track of this album. I took a star off for the last song - the fart noises in a song about the end of the world was a bridge too far for my delicate sensibilities.

Loved it vocals were awesome and is funky af
Excellent

I knew a few songs, but not the entire album. Love the funk. Favorite songs: Can You Get to That, Maggot Brain
funky(lol), good for vibing
Merece todo y más. No esperaba el nivel de flash. Tengo que rescatar para likear Nota: 3.7
Solid. Meh ending tho
lo disfruté bastante! sobretodo el primer tema, me pareció lo mejor del album
Sick Jan sesh’s to start and finish the album, great funky stuff in between, why on earth does the record finish with fart sounds lol
I love the funk
I mean... how can you say no to that title track? Ten minutes of Eddie Hazel shredding the guitar like his momma just died, producing one of the most glorious pieces of guitar work to ever grace wax. The rest of the album isn't too shabby either, full of soulful, psychedelic funk rock bops, though it does admittedly fall off a little on some songs. I also really love the closer, "Wars of Armageddon", for how utterly and stupidly out there it gets. Who knew that the Armageddon included the immaculately produced sound of someone ripping absolute ass?? However, I can't in good conscience give the album as a whole a 5 when everything else on it is so completely overshadowed by the opener.
Absolutely blown away by the title track. The rest was indeed very funkadelic.
Hallo waarom ben ik hier gestopt met luisteren dit gaat zo hard. Loev een lang psychedelisch gitaarnummer en de switch van genre daarna??? Cool
Wars of Armageddon? More like wars of wet fart noises am I right?
heerlijk!!
1 - Maggot Brain (a little too soft and a little too much noodling for me. Probably sounded incredibly cool in its day but it's aged quite a bit since) 3/5 2 - Can You Get to That (much more fun and catchy than the opener and an instant earworm. Acoustic funk is an interesting and daring move) 4/5 3 - Hit It and Quit It (catchier than the last one and it really grooves. A fun call and response hook make this another fun one. Full instrumentation is a welcome choice) 4/5 4 - You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks (more lyrical than the previous songs for sure. The interplay between instruments really shines here and it ends with a very good buildup) 4/5 5 - Super Stupid (catchy as they come on this album. Super fun hook and a great feature of organs and louder sections) 4.5/5 6 - Back in Our Minds (easy and laid back song and groove. A little too short to be of much substance, could have easily had another minute added to it) 3.5/5 7 - Wars of Armageddon (A persistent groove interspersed with random sound effects. Mimics a battlefield well, oddly enough, and serves as a fitting closer) 4/5 OVERALL - 7.7/10
Enjoyed
Great jams especially guitar on track one. Some sound effects like train signals and goats weren't necessarily but I get it...
The instant I heard what I thought was Rill Rill by Sleigh Bells playing I was in INSTANT euphoria. I will now be listening to this on repeat since now I know it helped inspire my favorite record of all time.
psycho funkaholic
I feel like a Funkadelic album shouldn't start with 10 drumless minutes of 6/8 slow blues. Dig the rest of it though, some of it more of a Sly & the Family Stone vibe than their later stuff.
Didn’t know what to expect going into this (other than, y’know, funk). That first track is a bit of a ride, the guitar solo and the tone is insane and I think the first half works better but slightly drops off the more it goes on, may just be a tad too long. The solo is utterly excellent though, raw emotion on display. Super Stupid is a damn hell of a song, fantastic guitar work, love the drums and energy in the rhythm. I definitely wanna check out more by this band.
Would be more appreciated having tooted summink. Not as uber muscular as Mothership which we reviewed. Cant help but compare it to other of their albums which i prefer. Still v. enjoyable. And the monologues are fantastic. Id buy an album of his motovational speeches.
Classic, but last two tracks always get skipped for me. 4.5.
I'd have loved this when I was digging through my dad's records and learning guitar. Love to have seen them live.
The opening track is a masterpiece and steals the show. The rest of the tracks don’t come close to touching it, but are still above average.
One of those records that you see the cover all the time and know it’s important, but you just have never heard it. I do dig it, very funky and will give it another spin
Maggot Brain - Epic 10mins of guitar. Like a slightly more metal Pink Floyd. The rest of the album - Super funky. Piano & elec guitar jazz vibes. Good jazz vocals. Still some rock elements with guitar ( super stupid). Wars - Noise
Black Pink Floyd. Way more transgressive than I expected. Released two years before Dark Side of the Moon, clearly influenced that and Shine On, at minimum. Awesome but a little disappointed to be listening to actual flatulence over and over in the final track. I'm sure there's some symbolism there but man, it just doesn't feel right.
You
Awesome, fun, funky album
for the 70's this album sounds quite fresh and detailed, with interesting lyrics and good production. 10 minute-long intro track provides a good, mysterious start for the album, making you wonder what it's gonna reveal next, this album is definitely one of those, who's with every single next track appears to be more and more enjoyable right to the finishing, another one 10 minute-long, but this time with experimental noisy cacophony, that is not leaving you disappointed. myself, i must admit that i liked it, i'll get back to it one day
Not really funky, certainly psychedelic and bookend by Zappa esque freak outs, but even those are listenable and engaging. The songs themselves are really well crafted soul influenced rock. The rhythm section has a clear groove to it and the songs have space to grow outwards. Surprisingly good
Great album, that 10 minute solo right out of the gate, damn
Banger
The album was nice, I liked the album cover & the R&B, rock vibes. The different members in different songs were cool as well. So, overall, a 4.
Really liked this! Super stupid was cool. They introduce an idea in like one verse and then the instrumentals tell the rest of the story. Sounds like a horror soundtrack and then the guitar spiralling and losing control is so fun. So many nice elements. The little clangy bell thing that floats from left to right in 'Back in our minds' Lots of nice textual stuff happening throughout the album. Wars of Armagedden sounds like a bunch of demon kids in music class whilst the teacher is out. It's actually kinda scary. I can't tell if they had the best or worst time making this, it is very funky and psychedelic though so they lived up to the name.
Loved it. Not entirely what I expected, way more guitar and jam band like flows than funky blues. Just very very very good!
Funky.
A very strong 4. Can definitely find a place in my rotation. Would not be a mainstay in it, but this album slaps. Some of the strange noisiness distracts from the groove but that might not be the case in all circumstances. At the same time, it's doesn't veer too far and make it unlistenable -- it feels like a constructed part of the album, it flows well. That guitar tho. Mmphhh.
Started really strong and fizzled out by the end. Side two was a bit forgettable, but loved side one.
This was cool. Started off awesome and some of the playing was amazing. That said I think overall I had higher expectations for this album. I thought this was gonna 5 Stars for me and it wasn’t. It was a nice place to visit but not a place I’d live if you know what I mean…
Album #84 Funkadelic: Maggot Brain Having enjoyed One Nation Under a Groove a lot more than I thought I would, I was pretty optimistic for this one. However, I wasn’t anticipating the first track. If every song sounded like the title track, this album would be an easy ten. George Clinton demonstrated that he isn’t reliant on quirky funk and shit-themed allegories, but could actually derive pure emotion through just a guitar; potentially my favourite guitar sound of all time, or at least up there. To be honest, having something so different and wonderful from the rest of the album at the start sort of makes the rest disappointing by comparison. The rest of the album is still a good funky time, but I kept longing for a return to the title track. I will say a track like ‘Back in Our Minds’ completely makes me reanalyze Funkadelic’s legacy, as its influence on late 70s bands like Talking Heads and DEVO is blatantly obvious; the vocal ticks on display sound as if they came out of David Byrne's own mouth. This is definitely superior to the other Funkadelic album I heard, but I fear what holds it back a tad for me is that it never maintained the same intrigue as the opening track. Best Songs: Maggot Brain, Hit it and Quit it, Super Stupid Worst Track: Wars of Armageddon Score out of 10: 8.5
Epic.
De fondo mientras trabajaba me ha gustado
Great album to start with its guitar-mainly record. Probably one of the most unique album I've heard with how every track is exceptional from its guitar solo's masterpiece.
Pretty good, some nice sounds.
Honestly more rock than funk at times, but it's still very funky. The opening tracks are the strongest by far, with the album not really living up to the promise of those two songs. A great way to start the day Favorite Songs: Maggot Brain, Can You Get to That
I’m rockin with it
I think my dad first introduced me to this album, or at least the title track, some years ago. I'm not sure I ever listened to more than the first song and I'm glad that this came up today so I could be reminded to listen to the rest of it! It makes sense my dad likes a 10 minute guitar solo because he's a big Pink Floyd fan, and the one who introduced me to bands like Led Zeppelin, Genesis, The Who, and of course Pink Floyd. I wasn't expecting to hear a bunch of funky farts in "Wars Of Armageddon" but there's a first for everything.
I love funk. Less so frantic guitar solos. Given the year of this album is 1971 I'm going to forgive the guitar sound - of its time - and focus on the quality of the funk which is great.
An impressive mix of Funk, Psych, Rock, and Soul that succeeds on many levels. Just a fun listen, not to mention one of the most iconic album covers of all time.
7/10 - Holy shit was ein geiler Opener! (Episches verzerrtes Blues Solo) - Der Gitarrensound, das Feel, die Dynamik ... Woooooooow O_O - Generell das Album nicht so funky wie ich dachte, eine Menge psychadelic-rock ... dennoch funky an vielen Stellen - Cooler Groove auf "Hit it and Quit it" - Vom Opener abgesehen nichts was richtig hervorsticht - Letzter Song ist ... etwas zu weird für mich (Furzgeräusche, etc ...)
Great!
Really, really Psychodelic, full of funky jams but way too short. It has the right mood to be properly enjoyed. 7/10.
I’m not sure what’s going on with the cover art, but to my surprise I really liked this album! A couple of songs ran a bit long, but I found the record to be a nice combination of funk and rock, with shades of Pink Floyd. I must say, I really enjoyed it…four stars.
First time listening to it here. Sounds like a hugely classic album. Very into all of it. Trippy and psychedelic opening track. Can You Get to That is the original sample of Rill Rill by Sleigh Bells.
After having a string of albums that I’ve either been indifferent, or not liked, this was a fresh breath of air and probably one of my favourites so far on this journey. This blend of psych rock, and gritty funk really pulled me in and I loved it. The first track may be my favourite song out of all the albums I’ve listened to so far, I loved how long the guitar solo was, and it almost felt like an emotional arc. This came out during a tense time in America and you can feel like this is a reaction to the tension. There’s a despair that lies in this album that was pretty enrapturing. Yeah loved this, very happy.
ive heard it before although its been years. fun time
When I first listened to Maggot Brain years ago it was distinctly not what I expected. And was pleasantly surprised!Such fun and joyous music (and one of the best extended solos ever by the late and underappreciated Eddie Hazel). Now when I listen to Maggot Brain it's exactly what I expect and somehow it's even better.
Has one of those songs you have already heard but didn't know. That's how you know you are listening to a pioneer on music.
Yeah it’s good stuff.
Well. This was exactly what I needed this weekend. Something with musicality and virtuosity, but also pretty freaky overall.
An evidence for me. The firsy song is crazy.
After many years of knowing about Maggot Brain but never having heard the album, it was a big regret it mine putting this off for so long when I finally decided to to sit through it. I knew many people praised this album and called it one of the best ever made, and I could tell why that was. The title track alone is one of the best long songs I've heard, and it was an amazing song to start to a great listening experience. 4.7/5
Really good. Although it's got funk to it, more pure rock than I expected. The first song gave me strong Pink Floyd feelings. Really enjoyed "can You Get to That" too, a little more poppy and catchy. Not totally sold on the fart noises, but that's okay, they earned it. Fantastic guitar, bass, and drumming. Feels like they're having a hell of a good time making the music too. You would love to experience this live. Strong 4 star album, kept out of 5 territory by feeling just a little backgroundey. A little something missing, maybe more variety, maybe singing, keeps it from being an all timer to me. The middle of the album fades a little between very strong opening and closing tracks too.
very funky overall a great listen but no songs were catchy
Not a bad album! The title track is a masterpiece. “Wars Of Armageddon” at the end of the album is okay.
Based on the first track I wasn't sure I was going to like this album, it was largely one long guitar solo, with uninteresting backing and lots of reverb. Granted the guitar playing itself was solid, but it was a long track and I wasn't looking forward to a whole album of the same thing. Luckily, the rest of the album was completely different, and really quite enjoyable. Really funky rock, some interesting sounds and overall just fun music to listen to. The last track was a similar vibe to the rest of the album, but I really didn't understand the sounds played over the top. Screaming, wet farts... it was just... weird. Not sure what that was supposed to add. Luckily that was only one element though (and only for a relatively small portion of another long track). Mixed feelings, and there's definitely bits I'd skip (even if just parts of individual tracks), but I enjoyed the album as a whole. I'd be more tolerant of the first track on future listens because I know that's not the vibe of the whole album so I could happily enjoy it for what it is. Low 4.
woaww dizzyy... c: nvm I thought this album was going to be a 5 based on the first track but then they went to a more rocky sound instead of a psychedelic side. Overall these songs are good and some even have a good psychedelic jam (notably Super Stupid) Wait we're back to psychedelic. This last song makes me feel like I'm insane which is probably the point. I'm a huge fan of everything going on. Some of the samples are... interesting but I think it adds to the insanity of the whole thing. idk how to rate this 20 minutes of 5/5 (1st and last track) 17 minutes of 2-3/5 (the rest) lands this in low 4.
4/5
fun to listen too
Definitelly interesting, will give another listen.
A great blend of longer jams and pop songs.
MORE 10 min solos
Heard a lot about this album over the years, but never gave it a listen. Today was the day. It takes something truly special to stop me in my tracks these days, but that opening track just blew me away. I can see why this has received so much praise over the years. Super Stupid is great too, with clear influence from Jimi Hendrix. I really enjoyed the album, but it just falls short of 5 stars. The last track is meandering yet somehow stationary at the same time. As an almost 10 minute closer, you'd expect it to be a main focus of the album just like the opener. 4/5 Overall brilliant, but the last track lets it down.
Some of it is a little boring and jammy, but I like a good jam and the instrumentation is great. 3.5/5.0: Very Good
This was actually a pretty cool album. So far, out of everything I’ve heard from Funkadelic, this is probably my favorite. It strikes a really solid balance between psychedelic and funk, and you can definitely hear some progressive characteristics as well through its experimentation and improvisation. It’s not really my go to style of music, but this is one of those albums I genuinely enjoyed, and I’m glad I finally checked it out.
Short & sweet album, which is funny considering the two 10 minute long tracks. I enjoyed it. Wars of Armageddon was odd, and I'd skip it in the future.
7 - GOOD
Funky shit. Mad fart noises and stuff. Really fun.
it was pretty good, found some good songs i really liked and the guitar was great. couldn’t take the fart sounds seriously though lol
Nice. Liked a lot better than much other heavy instrumental music.
Dang this is great, until it isn't. For the large part, the performance is so tight, the tones are delicious, the groove is immaculate, and the mix is luscious. Everybody has their time to shine on here, all members of the band, and they all crush it. Then it fell apart. First is that twirly metallic instrument in Back In Our Minds, which is extremely prominent in the arrangement, loud, doesn't accompany anything, and pretty much makes it unlistenable. And second is the closer track - it's a bit of a let down conceptually from the rest of the album. Feels like it goes somewhere and then just stays there forever without developing, and then gets gross and weird to end the album. Those last 2 tracks definitely keep it from being a 5/5. Track 1 is great. Tracks 2-5 are complete bangers. And tracks 6 and 7 are unfortunate. I'm going to weight those standout songs heavily because they really are so so good. 4.1/5
eccentric and really fun album
Really interesting and more rock/psych than I was expecting. Cool surprise.
fine guitar
A little odd, very funky with good instrumentals
I love this album, it is such an amazing melting pot for so many styles and genres that were popular at the time. But in some places it went slightly too off track. The opening track Maggot Brain is perfect, an absolute masterpiece which could not be improved on in the slightest. A funk band making a prog/pysch song which Pink Floyd would be jealous of. Eddie Hazel really deserves all of the plaudits for this one but will always go under the radar. Then we land into what we love Clinton and Funkadelic for, Hit It and Quit It & Can You Get To That are funk at its finest, groovy and silky in equal measures. I would like to have heard more of the prog style guitar riffs throughout but the next couple of tracks again stick to the funky nature and they do it well. But the way the album finishes feels to me like they got bored, that they didn't want to be taken seriously for some reason. It could not be closer to a perfect album, but the two closing tracks are so distracting that you forget what a blast you were having through the whole A side.
7/10
4.5 stars. Slaps. Dark and trippy psychedelic funk with moments of acid rock and soul. Lots of genres going on, but in a good way. "Can You Get To That" is the most approachable track, super catchy rhythm. The rest is more eccentric but hits really hard. Super creative record.
Incredible record. The funk is so pure and true on this record. The sequence of instrumentation, moods and harmonies is so engaging and kept my ears on the edge of their seat the entire time. Not to mention the album cover is absolutely sick. This is a prize in music.
8/10
I really can't decide if this album is more funk with rock n roll, or rock n roll with funk. Every time I listen to it, I feel more of one side than the other, but then it switches. I guess it's just the sound of Funkadelic. And that's more than good enough for me.
Good psycho, but needs certain mood for listening
The pre G funk with a P
Funky indeed
After giving it a 2nd listening, because there was too much things distracting me while listening to it the first time - I always enjoy nice grooves and funk genre had always a strong appeal on me! - I ended giving a 4. Probably it deserved more, as with many of my ratings here, but I missed the acid part of the listening, with that on, I would probably give it the maximum :-D
I love the guitar and the funk. There were some whimsical sounds they used that added nothing but I still enjoyed the jam.
This was funky af
I should have been listening to this my whole life. Killer rock/funk up there with the best Sly and the Family Stone. I can see Vernon Reed and Prince being heavily influenced by this.
Jammy
Even when this album gets a bit noisy, it’s still fun and highly entertaining. The opening track is a masterpiece.
Dude. This was a wild ride for which I was not prepared. Solid AF. Losing a star because someone needed to be more judicious with the splicing knife.
Title track is maybe greatest guitar solo ever and rest of the album is solid funk album
I thought I would hate this but you know what? Hell yeah, Funkadelic.
Very cool. Amazing musicianship. Some random odd stuff but it's still great
I didn’t know this album at all. And I didn’t know I *needed* a quality rock album from a funk band. So good.
Enjoyed listening to it
I was in the toilet while listening to Wars of Armageddon —as I listen with headphones— and then the fart sounds started. I thought I was trippin'.
Some good psychedelics fr fr
Awesome acid funk. I hear so many roots of music, especially jazz fusion in Funkadelic’s music.
a little weird but funkayyyy
This was a good one to run to. The beginning is bluesy and then it gets funky. Fun
Rock with a dash of funk and soul! Fun listen
Ergens tussen James Brown en Jimi Hendrix. Zeker niet een favoriet maar heeft een speciaal plekje vanwege de invloed die dit had op Lyssa.
Loved it
From 1971. I know that this is a classic influential album but I have never listened to it. I’m familar with later Parliament-Funkadelic, but never listened to the earlier Funkadelic incarnation. Never heard this on top 40 radio, nor was this ever played on late-70s AOR. I like this a lot! Sound is more slow-bluesy than I was expecting. Just solidly fits in with the 70s funk that I am familiar with. Opening track is amazing. Closing track is … challenging.
Good
Bombsauce
super fun the long instrumental was a bit like pink floyd actually
Made me feel something at 8 in the morning
Wild and weird, I feel like a stranger in a tight-knit club. Drugs and such
I liked the guitar work of this album
Love
Hab’s sehr gern gehört. Sogar mehrmals. Direkt abgespeichert.
Oh my I really enjoyed this record. In fact I liked it that much I put it on again a bit later in the day…. Doing the washing up listening to this made the chore so much better!
Maggot Brain and Super Stupid were standouts of the album.
what's she doing down there... does someone wanna give her a hand?
Never heard this, knew nothing. First track is an absolute worldie! 10 minutes of the most epic guitar playing possible. Its just god tier. The rest of the album is still decent but a bit inconsistent but wow for the opener
?? Bildungslücke, George Clinton auf Wiedervorlage sehr gut. c
Very soul funk instrumental, some nice, some annoying while working
This is an absolute blast! It's like a spiritual journey through funk, that gets hot and heavy, has it's knees scuffed and bares it's soul at the same time. I can see where this album began, and where it inspires everything that came after it. Truly magic!!
the instruments are amazing!
My first real discovery so far. I was only aware of later-stage P-Funk era Parliament/Funkadelic. I definitely hear the influences of Jimi throughout this album. I will say that my first impression on the first track coming off Sigur Rod the day before was “Not another navel-gazing jam session type album” but once I understood the context for the opening track, it all clicked in for me. The next five songs were all tight, late 60’s/early 70’s style rock tracks that fit right in my wheelhouse with socially conscious messages and I was surprised I had never heard them before because they were great. So much so that the final track of purposeless noodling didn’t bother me. I will be recommending this album to others. Love it.
Very good album insane instrumentals the middle was the best. Last song was experimental.
the last track was definitely a strange experience, but the first track was perfect, even though i don't actually love songs without lyrics
So deep in the pocket that the beat is covered in lint.
4.5
‘Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time For y'all have knocked her up I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe I was not offended For I knew I had to rise above it all Or drown in my own shit’ That must be contender for one of the coolest introductions to an album. It already has your attention straight from the get go then it’s followed by such an incredible psychedelic riff. On ‘Hit It and Quit It’ that prominent organ sound is outstanding, along with the catchy lyrics repeating through the track and even the guitar solos add so much character to the track. It seemed to be a main theme in the album that the band seem to have a lot fun and go off on solos, but without sounding out of place or unnecessary. It almost sounds like a very professional jamming session. Each track seems to pose a new unique sound to it, an instrument played a certain way, an outlandish lyric, a wild solo. It’s such a great listen and is definitely re-visitable. I love the use of female backing singers, think it should be brought back, this era of music absolutely nails it. It’s so nice to have more than one voice harmonising on a track. Amazing album cover. This album made me fall in love with Eddie Hazels playing style, I was already familiar of his work from his stuff with Parliament. He showcases why he’s on of the best on this record. Favourite tracks are: ‘Maggot Brain’, ‘Hit It and Quit It’, ‘You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks’, & ‘Super Stupid’.
Only had time to listen to about half but loved it!! Funky but also very moody and dark
A lot of good sounds on this. I’ll definitely be revisiting
Very pleasant listen. I am not a big fan of psychedelic music, although I love Pink Floyd but this album amazed me for his capacity of being smooth at the same time as chaotic
This album was a hell of a trip. I was expecting the funk, obviously, but I didn't anticipate it rocking so hard. I can see how these guys were pioneers; I feel like Super Stupid must have invented a couple of genres all on its own. I don't know much about the artists involved in this group, but I can only assume they must have been pretty damn influential, as the musicianship on this record is next level. As is the production; I love the effects on the drums in You and Your Folks, and that iconic guitar(?) riff in Can You Get to That. A lot of the production techniques used here wouldn't seem the slightest bit out of place in the modern day. I believe the great George Clinton deserves the credit for that. I really need to get around to checking out his catalogue one of these days. Despite the quality of the early tracks, this record is let down in my eyes by two very weak songs right at the very end. I understand they were going for a psychedelic angle in Back In Our Minds, but the end product with the distorted instruments and vocals just sounds irritating. It feels like listening to an audiobook of some literary classic ran through a warble filter. Wars Of Armageddon is a sort of interesting experimental jam session-style track, but again, all the wacky sound effects just end up being annoying and distracting from the musicianship. Maybe the message and meaning of those ripe farts are just going over my head, though. I could have maybe given this a 5, but on a 7 track album, having 2 tracks that I actively dislike listening to makes it hard to justify a perfect score. What's good here is very good though. Favourite tracks: Super Stupid, You and Your Folks, Can You Get To That
Classic!
odd but good
I think if i listened to it a few more times, I would be leaning towards a perfect score. I don't think there is a bad song here. Right now it's a strong 4.
Weitere zentrale Titel sind „Can You Get to That“, „Super Stupid“ und „Hit It and Quit It“, die zwischen Gospel-Anleihen, verzerrten Riffs und politisch aufgeladenen Texten pendeln. Das Album wirkt geschlossen, aber bewusst roh und lässt viel Raum für Atmosphäre statt Virtuosität. In der Rückschau ein stilbildendes Werk, das Funk radikal erweitert hat.
Great album. The musicianship and the unhinged jams make this record a must-listen, but it’s the raw emotion that defines it. The guitar solo on the title track is a haunting masterclass in psychedelic soul. Beyond the heavy rock, the experimentation with tape echo and the shift into acoustic, gospel-tinged tracks like 'Can You Get to That' show the incredible range of the band. It’s a beautiful, chaotic journey through the dark side of funk.
Suena excelente está banda. Un muy buen descubrimiento. Me gustan las voces, las guitarras, todo realmente.
Pure funk. the songs that aren't 10 minutes long have endless re-listen quality. the 10 minute songs are also awesome
funk
Can not, will not, be defined by genre 4 - a great album, even among this list
If you ever need an example of how a guitar can convey emotion, look no further than the title track to this album. Eddie Hazel is a virtuoso. Favorite track: Maggot Brain
The band's name is accurate. This was indeed quite funky, and I do love some funk.
Guitar
Funkadelic's third studio outing, "Maggot Brain", took me a little by surprise, in a nice way, I found it to be a brave, genre-blurring album that feels less like a traditional funk record and more like a rock album. While George Clinton’s fingerprints are all over the production, the soul of this album belongs to guitarist Eddie Hazel. The album opens with the title track, and it is nothing short of audacious. To start an album with a ten-minute, sprawling, weeping guitar solo is a move of pure confidence - it is the standout track. For me, Hazel remains the MVP throughout. While the album is anchored by two instrumentals, the visceral opener and the heavy, distorted, nonsense of "Wars of Armageddon", his presence ensures a consistent level of excellence across every track. Despite the band's name, "Maggot Brain" leans much harder into rock than standard funk. It isn't until the third track, "Hit It and Quit It," that we truly get to lean into the groove. Driven by a great repeating riff and Bernie Worrell’s searing organ work, it provides the "funky" energy fans might expect, but it’s still seasoned with a gritty, soulful edge. The album is a fun, consistent trip throughout. If there is a point of contention, it is the packaging. The album artwork is, frankly, disturbing. It is a jarring, visceral image that fails to convey the sophisticated musicianship found within the grooves. Unlike the "soulful" and "audacious" sounds on the vinyl, the cover doesn’t necessarily invite a first-time listener in, or represent the "genre-blurring" brilliance of the band. "Maggot Brain" is a brave statement that proved funk could be as heavy and heady as any rock record of the era. While the cover might be off-putting, the contents are a four-star fun album and bravo, Eddie Hazel. Side one 1 "Maggot Brain" (5/5) 2 "Can You Get to That" (4/5) 3 "Hit It and Quit It" (4/5) 4 "You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks"(4/5) Side two 1 "Super Stupid" (4/5) 2 "Back in Our Minds" (3/5) 3 "Wars of Armageddon" (3/5) Total - 27 Average - 3.86 199/1001 111/199 albums reviewed were new to me.
not sure what to say about this not going to lie but idk shit goes INSANELY hard like damn. Love the long ass instrumentals opening and closing it and I mean its just got hits. Nothing I'd ever listen to in my free time probably but like its just a rly cohesive album which I had a good time with. Definitely not what I expected coming into it. Please can this be on my page this time i'm traumatised I want to DIEEEE Best Song: Hit It and Quit It
I've been meaning to listen to this album for years given all the acclaim it gets but something about calling your record Maggot Brain and the screaming face on the cover always put me off. It was well worth it, loved the 10 minute Hendrix-esque title track, there follows a half dozen conventional songs but the closing track with a bunch of wacky sound effects really let things down for me.
I feel like this could have been a five under different circumstances. Had to have the volume relatively low while driving with the family to Newcastle after Boxing Day. My dad would love this album. Reminds me of some of the best parts of Frank Zappa.
Really fun album
Need another full listen. Last track sounds like it had fart sounds at the end. Listened a bit at Great Wolf
Funkalicious. Fart sounds.
Some great guitar riffs. Glad it was suggested, never would have known about it otherwise.
Some funky ass shit. The ass shit applies to all the fart sounds at the end of Wars of Armageddon.
wonderful guitar work
Did not enjoy the heavy flatulence at the end of the album
I really liked this one
All over the place. Opener is legendary
4.4
Funky instrumentals with light vocals. Would be a great vibe for cooking or background music while friends are over.
Perfect timing on this one because today I just finished a project for school inspired by 70s funk music and this is the quintessential funk album. Favorite track: Hit It and Quit It 4.5/5
Fun one
spacey. out there. edge of funk.
Very cool. I expected to like the longer bookend tracks best and sit through the middle five songs, but the opposite was true. I like the concept of a single long guitar solo opening a record, but in actuality the first track didn’t do much for me. The shorter songs really carried this album with their power, volume, and grooves. I’ll absolutely return to this, along with a deeper exploration into (P-)Funk’s discog. Must-listen #265.
I like it. It's not far from what I usually listen to but at the same it's not the same. It's got its own vibe and stuff.
Nu ma asteptam sa-mi placa asa mult, o experienta. Funk - rock - psihedelic.
Loved it, the tunes where funky and yet very classic
Would have given it 5 stars if not for the fart noises
I loved the first half of this so much. Second half lost me a bit. The riff from Can You Get to That was used in Sleigh bells Rill Rill
Favorites: Maggot Brain
i loved this, very fun ride starting off with a crazy intro really liked back in our minds - reminds me lot of atul's song from spiritfarer wars of armageddon was a pleasant ending
Enjoyed this way more than I expected! Funk isn't generally my thing, but this is way more adventurous, experimental and psychedelic than most of what I've been exposed to.
Yet anotehr artist I've never listend to even though I love funk. Pretty good album. :)
Funkadelic were an awesome band. This is my second album on the list by them and I hope there is a third
Super funky, but I was slightly underwhelmed 👀
Groovy - gives major BLACK POWER! Unique use of instruments, no inhibitions I enjoyed the majority of the album being straight instrumentals, with the occasional chant. Kinda reminds me of Momma, at Kashmere HS, rocking her 'fro Dope album cover too! George Clinton, Eddie Hazel, Tawl Ross, Billy Nelson, Tiki Fulwood The track "Maggot Brains" >> 🤯🤯🤯 Primary ingredient: LSD
GOING IN: Very excited indeed LISTENED WHILE: Lying on sofa, headphones on at 5am, doing a sudoku FAMILIARITY: Know the name SKIP RATE: Played it straight through REPLAY VALUE: Deffo play again DISCOVERY CURVE: Got it by the end ALBUM ARC: Warmed up nicely VERDICT: Better than expected BODY'S VERDICT: Decent head wobble FAVOURITE TRACK: Hit It and Quit It ALBUM RATING: 4
Low 4, super influential album and a lot of it rips
Great record
nothing usual
The solo on the title track is amazing! That alone earns the rating
I really liked this album. The songs were good and I liked the way it was organized
My 2nd Funkadelic record of this challenge and an equally worthy one. The slightly meandering bluesy opener is great before it gets down to business with funk after funk tune. Not sure what the fart sounds at the end of the closer are all about but apart from that, this album is boss!
Good! Don't know what's up with the farts at the end though
Classic!
The first two tracks made me feel like I had just smoked a joint. Utter perfection. It’s so hard to follow that, and a bold move to make it the beginning of the album and not the end. The rest of the tracks all have there moments, and the closer is a bit of a cluster but still enjoyable. A close 5 star album, but not quite there for me.
Bon ben c’était bien cool ! Inhabituel pour moi, mais c’était fun avec une bonne prod d’époque !
Oh my God. I've been WAITING to get this album!! My husband played it a few years back and I genuinely really enjoyed it. It was great taking some time and then hearing it again. Really picked up on a lot.
I found this a bit dated for me it’s not one of the timeless classics
Title track is exceptional and one of the greatest tracks of the 1970s. Closing track is also great, as is Can You Get To That and Super Stupid. The echo effect on some tracks just does not work for my brain.
When that guitar hit in maggot brain, I knew instantly this was a banger.
It's funky, psychedelic, and...sorta metal? A little crazy, and a hot mess in a good way. The album sounds like it's cover. Favorite Track: "Can You Get To That".
Jevli kult, groovy som få! Litt spacet intro, men klarte ikke stå stille under hele albumet!
This one's a real mix for me. The guitar playing and more rock-focused moments are pretty awesome (check out Mike Watt and J Mascis's cover of Maggot Brain, btw, if you're into that sort of thing), but I get lost and my mind starts drifting to other things during the hooting and hollering funk parts. Not really my bag. But what they hey . . . In the spirit of the holiday, and shredding guitar licks, I'll be generous.
Well... Imagine if Sun-Ra and Sly Stone had a baby, and that baby grew up and taught Anthony Kiedis and Flea how to be in a band. That baby would definitely be Funkadelic. And I like it quite a bit.
Glad I heard this -- can you get to that was the only song I'd heard before. Good grooves. The first track is abominable but most of the rest is very solid.
Fing stark an mit nem geilen Funk Sound und hat dann mit "Wars of Armageddon" leider n beschissenen Abschluss gefunden. Glaube das erste Mal das ich Furz Geräusche auf nem Album gehört habe xD
