I ended up enjoying this quite a bit
Sooo good so good.
Fun. Very groovy. Trippy. Really can’t complain about anything
This was so unexpectedly good. Highly enjoyed
Yummy guitars all over the place! I love it. George Clinton and his companions are legends - this is an amazing album overall. There are a few tracks that I could live without though: You and your folk, Me and my folks, Back in Our Minds and maybe Wars of Armageddon
It was weird, I thought this sounded ok at first, but then on second listen I found it way more enjoyable. The opener shreds and is awesome. Definitely something that stood out to me more on the second run-through. Can You Get To That might be my favorite song here. Love the catchy instrumentals and then the mix of vocals. Hit It And Quit It is another fun one. Really liked Super Stupid but the instrumentals sounded super familiar to me. Then it hit me. If you google the song Alive & Amplified (old Madden Soundtrack song) there's a pretty interesting resemblance between the 2 songs. Pretty great album and I'm glad I went back to it since my first time through wasn't a very close listen. Solid 4.
Classic funk. Also they are shitting themselves at the end of the last song.
4.5. That solo.
Sandwiched in between the immensely long and not need opening/closing track (almost 20 mins total) is a very fun and catchy album
First two songs are iconic and amazing. Side B was less compelling.
good, weird lyrics
Super enjoyed this album. Fun and different than most other R&B I've heard. Will def listen again. First track is SO Good
Excellent opener, wish the rest was more its vibe. Good listen
Maggot Brain is really enjoyable, didn't really expect such a rock-heavy sound given all I know about Funkadelic is the other stuff we've had from them here, and the last time we had them was One Nation Under a Groove with a disco focus, but this hits the mark all over the place. Super Stupid is a stone cold killer of a song, the opening title track goes through some cool stuff even if it lasts too long, and yeah, there's some guff on there (Back In Our Minds plus parts of Wars of Armageddon which has a) too much cowbell and b) a diabolical last two minutes or so with farting?!) that drags it down, though I think good enough overall to still get a 4.
I really like this. We had Parliament right at the beginning of the thread; this is similar (and a lot of the same people), but is more on the rock side of funk rock. First track is mega self-indulgent but in a way that I find really enjoyable, Can You Get To That is the best song on the album, but it's all decent, catchy, fun, really enjoyable. 4/5.
Title track is elite, but the album quality goes down with each song.
Wow, the first band I knew nothing about that I felt really excited listening to. Track 1 rules, and imagine my surprise to hear a Sleigh Bells riff on track 2. I thought the first half was stronger, though.
The whole thing feels like a jam session that got caught on tape at just the right moment. The guitar has so much weight, like it’s carrying everything. It’s got that trippy vibe, like something Santana might do, but more raw and experimental. You don’t have to think too hard to feel it. Good stuff.
Sehr nice funky, aber etwas repetitiv. Titeltrack ist mit 10 min quasi 30% des albums lol. 4/5
4/5
Funkadelic is right, how good! This was super fun, and not what I expected at all! Never heard of Maggot Brain before, and 99 % sure I’ve never heard any of the songs off this album - although they gave me a vibe like I had when browsing a record shop. Loved the guitar, loved the funk, loved it all - it’s very nearly a 5/5 for me.
I'm never in the mood for the title track, but holy crap is the rest of this album good.
Great funk and quite varied too. While I'm a bigger fan of P-Funk than Funk Rock, this is a great album and definitely a classic. Also a good place to start if you havent listened to funk.
If you like this kind of thing then you're going to love this album. I do like this kind of thing even if it is a bit, shall we say juvenile, in spots. Regardless, this album clearly deserves a spot on this list.
26/1001 Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain kicks off with the band’s and most likely all of early funk rock’s greatest achievement, Maggot Brain. The brainchild and magnum opus of guitarist Eddie Hazel, who was told by band leader George Clinton, to play like his mother had died, and well the rest is history. Hazel played arguably one of the most emotional, expressive and greatest guitar solos of all time. rAfter the somber title track the album picks up the pace with a more typical funk sound with a more bass focused sound for the remainder of the A-side. For the start of the B-side Hazel once again steals the shows with his impressive guitar chops on the wonderfully psychedelic Super Stupid. Back In Our Minds, however, is sadly quite bad. It features a great beat, but the experimental nature of the song, just doesn’t work, and it’s easily the album’s weakest track. The final track, Wars Of Armageddon, is a trippy jam, which is a bit inconsistent. It features a snippet of Maggot Brain and at times gets going, but it’s filled with too many samples of random noises and sound effects, which ruins an otherwise decent jam. 4/5
First listen. Quite good.
Solid funk
Hit it or quit it en super stupid zijn m'n favoriten. Maggot brain is een prachtige 10 min lang gitaar stuk
Just listened to “Cosmic Slop” for the first time the other day so this is fitting. Eddie Hazel shreds on the 10 minute intro “Maggot Brain”. “Can You Get To That” and “Hit It and Quit It” are still my favorites on the album.
Maggot Brain was worth the price of admission.
Good stuff! I've seen this album listed on a LOT of artist's "influential albums" lists. I think this is the first time I've gotten around to listening to it, though. The variety is the standout for me. Not one of those albums where all the songs sound similar. Title track is some pretty damn amazing guitar, too. Could see this one getting ranked higher with additional listenings.
travis sampled track 1. loving the tempo. cover looks so cool! lowk ahead of its time. super stupid is the best track imo. outro is so morbid jesus christ. 8.5/10!
Want to listen again but this is great - heavier and more rocky than I'd expected. Title track is obviously phenomenal. Quite a unique structure of starting and ending with long tracks and having short punchy ones in between.
Critically acclaimed for good reason
Great album! But the last song got me scratching my head - where did the cow come from and what does it have to do with farting power pussy
Epic Guitar Solo Eddie Hazel
Ja dit vind ik nice Lekker wavy Hendrix esque
➕super stupid, back in our minds ➖can you get to that, you and your folks, me and my folks lots of noises happening with this one! really really loved the extended fart sequence in the last song. in all seriousness this is one of the albums i wasn’t surprised at all to see. first time listening to it all the way through though. also obviously have to mention that this is one of the greatest album covers of all time.
'Maggot Brain', the song, is amazing and an absolute masterpiece. The album is not worth 5 stars (that voice?), but it's close.
Funky, rockend, tijdloos. Dit album heeft het allemaal. Goede grooves en een aantal hits, zoals Maggot Brain en Can You Get To That. 4.3
Maggot Brain maukas instrumentaali kitarasoolo avaus. Muutenkin maukasta funkkia. Parhaat: Maggot Brain, Super Stupid, Hit It and Quit It
An attractive, interesting album with a great start and good finish. Throughout it, there's plenty of attractive riffs, and it's easy to listen. However, given the length of the beginning and the end, the album feels ultimately short, and it feels like it's just a tiny bit from sticking the landing. As you consider whether you like the middle part, it's over, and as an effect it is not half as memorable as the start of the album. Very solid 4/5, and maybe a pretty hesitant 5.
The guitar on the title track is insane!
This is funkin’ great! One track that wasn’t my thing but the rest of it was incredible
Day 0002/1001 of One Album a Day Was not moved by the opening track unfortunately. Maybe if I was either tripping or played the guitar (or both) I would have appreciated it more. Apparently its one of the greatest bits of guitar work of all time so a shame to not have enjoyed it. The rest of the album was great however, phenomenal production quality and some very catchy guitar riffs and drumming and whatnot. Fav tracks: Super Stupid / You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks / Hit It and Quit It Bad tracks: Back in Our Minds
One of my favorite songs/guitar playing of all time on the title track. Incredible stuff. Can you get to that and hit it and quit it are also awesome. War of armaggedon is too much, I don't know what's going on there and it's a little too weird for me even though I love funkadelic. Almost a 5 if not for the 10 minute closing track with fart noises
i love this
Pretty interesting compared to their later work. A lot more guitar than I expected. Pretty cool.
I feel like this album is a little - a smidgen - overrated. Based off? The fact that I own a copy and don't listen all that much. That's my entire evidential basis. For what it's worth, I still consider it a 'high end of four stars' album, but if I want to truly enjoy a George Clinton creation, it's a Parliament platter every time.
I love rock albums that start slowly, quietly and strangely, and it doesn't get any slower, quieter (initially at least) and strangely than the title track of this album. Eddie Hazel's guitar on this track is worth a close listen - at least as close as George Clinton's interstellar mixing permits - a real musical masterpiece. This album has its shortcomings but the other thing I love about it is the social consciousness. What's Going On came out roughly at the same time, and songs like You and your folks, me and my folks make Marvin Gaye sound like a social tourist.
It's so impressive how different this Funkadelic album is from the other one in this collection ("One Nation Under A Groove"), or from the lone Parliament album too. I can definitely see why people have raved about Eddie Hazel's epic solo in the title track; I don't think I've ever heard his work before, and this is quite showcase for his endless riff. There are shades of Hendrix and also Jeff Beck in "Maggot brain", but nothing derivative, and a pleasure to listen to (especially with headphones). The rest of the album is somewhat more traditionally George Clinton oriented, albeit a lot darker than a lot of other George Clinton albums have been, and more rock-oriented too than other albums (I don't think I would have known "Super stupid" was by Funkadelic if it came on the radio). Despite the shadows, though, it's largely entertaining (although disappointing that "Wars of armageddon" wasn't an adequate bookend to the title track), and fun too to get Hot Buttered Soul providing backing vocals on "Can you get to that".
Enjoyed that and what an outstanding first track!
I love this album, but I always wished it was longer. Can You Get To That is an all-time favorite song. Maggot Brain and Wars of Armageddon are both great songs, but since they are more like jams or solo-driven songs, they just don’t carry the same weight as the other songs, they aren’t songs I would typically put on alone. Take away those two tracks and you’re left with five remaining, just too short. Still love it though!
Perfekt!
If there's one thing this album is, it is completely ITSELF. George Clinton was not afraid to make the album that HE wanted, not what he thought would sell the best or be the easiest to listen to. He was lashing out, in his own unique way. A 10-minute electric guitar solo to start the album, and a 10-minute chaotic jam to end it, with five slabs of funk perfection sandwiched in between, is not everyone's cup of tea. Although Eddie Hazel's (mostly) unaccompanied guitar heroics in the opening track are stellar, it's not the kind of track you want to put on repeat. Those middle 5 songs, though... damn!
Not what I expected out of a Funkadelic album but I guess this is before the “Parliament” bit. This is still pretty funky but it’s a rock album for sure rather than a funk one. The ten minute opener is good for your joint and realizing you’re stoned before getting in to the rest of it. It’s a good solo, not the best, but I did like it. Like a less impressive Jimi. Out of the more traditional songs I liked “hit and quit it” and “super stupid” the most. The first is more of the funkadelic that I know of and the second really comes in to itself toward the end as an excellent 70s rock jam. Could really do without the second half of the last track. I feel like I wasn’t fucked up enough to appreciate it.
Too short. By lots.
Another good funk album. Comparing it to Superfly and 3 + 3 as those are all very recent. I like that they all had distinctly different styles. This one was definitely a lot jammier which lead to being more of a background noise album, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. No real standouts, but very solid stuff.
I said it before on their last album for some reason, but I will say it again Maggot Brain SHREDS! I think this album was slower than their other one if I can remember correctly but it was still pretty awesome. Can't really remember individual songs but ah who cares the whole album was put together very nicely. Here for the funk fo sho
First track really good
Además de la canción homónima, destaco "Hit it and quit it" y "Super stupid". Muchas gracias por la segunda escucha.
This was an unexpected treat. Definitely more of a rock album than a funk album, but that first track is incredible. It spins a little out of control towards the end, but I am here for it.
liked songs: Maggot Brain, Hit It And Quit It, You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks, Super Stupid, Wars Of Armageddon This slaps. There's some really cool rock/funk/psychedelic fusion happening here that's just very satisfying. 4
Spine tingling opener, bum fiddling closer.
Terribly funky, killer into and outro
Fun album. Great working music. Soothes my noisy mind by generating all the funk which I require. Unexpected and pleasant.
This album was so ahead of its time. Hard not to love it.
Didn't expect to like this but its actually really good
This is #day92 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... I finally get to dive into the album I've known for its enigmatic, eye-catching cover, but never actually listened to. Well, now I have, and? The title track is an absolute revelation. It's one of the most mind-blowing pieces of music I've ever heard. Actually, “mind-blowing” might be too strong a word; it's more like a sonic avalanche, crashing on you from a distance, in slow motion. As if Have A Nice Life resurrected Jimi Hendrix and decided to record a soundtrack for the apocalypse. This track alone justifies the album's "must-listen" status. As for the rest of the record, it's funky, psychedelic, and undeniably acidic. Other standout tracks include "Hit It And Quit It" and "Wars of Armageddon." On the other hand, "Can You Get To That" and "Back In Our Minds" feel a bit more drawn out and less engaging. I'm giving it a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day93.
Ken's show on wfmu
Another pleasant surprise! I was expecting over the top kitsch funk, which I associate with later Parliament Funkadelic stuff. However, this album is a much more eclectic mix witch echoes of Jimi Hendrix (lots), Led Zeppelin, and the use of sounds à la Pink Floyd. It all works together really well. I'd give it a 3 because it's not something I'd play often, but it gets an extra point for creativity and musicianship.
So I haven't ever listened to this album but I know of its fame and how it probably is one of the best album covers, but we'll see how this funk and soul album goes. Maggot Brain Super Stupid Super groovy, funk ya!!
Some of the better funk I’ve heard.
10 minute instrumental track to start? let's see if this is a vibe. It's okay, just a little boring? Good for easy listening. Second track is good. Third and fourth pretty good too. Back In Our Minds sounds like wine glasses. Final track a bit of an ear-sore, guess that's part of the funk genre? Didn't realise this was Jimi Hendrix, and that he founded Electric Lady Studios. I like the album cover.
funky as hell
Funkadelic Rating: 3.8
Play that funky music, loud! Got a hint of Jimi and War throughout, but especially on Super Stupid (best song.) Funky & psychedelic = an apropos band name. Someone please explain why Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time. Good effort by the funksters (3.9*s)
This album is a classic must-listen and a few tracks get repeat play at my place. It's a great fusion of rock, funk, soul, and psychedelics. It pushes genres about as far as they can go. I've seen them live several times (w/ G. Clinton and Parliament of course) and the live shows are absolutely mind blowing but I did miss the P-Funk combo so knocking it down a smidge. They're stronger together so 3.85.
The first track is a little too heavy on the psychedelic, but the rest of the album really brings the funk. I’m a fan. And with a name like Maggot Brain, I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this album before.
There are some stellar tracks on here, like the title track and the fart noise song. Not every track on here is as consistent or memorable. Still a great Funk classic.
One of my first funk album. Ahhh sweet memories.
Very funky, I am a fan
# Playlist track - Can you get to that # Notes - The opening track is a bit too slow. It doesn't really fit well with the rest of the album, and leads you into a different place that just don't exist anywhere else in the album. - The mix of funk and progressive/psychedelic rock that takes on is super cool! Not quite funk, not quite rock. Something interesting and new.
Not really my thing but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would have
Funky. Silly
These folks have got mag-GOAT BRAINS!
This goes so hard. The first track is an all-time brain melter (complimentary) and the rest is just so damn fun.
just absolutely mind bending
First song rocks, the rest are funky, last one is ridiculous
I have been aware of funkadelic because I am a fan on Parliament but I have not actually heard this album before. As a sort of forerunner to Parliament this was a lot rockier than I expected. The title track is superb and something I could quite easily imagine someone like Gary Moore playing. Although not exactly what I was expecting it was a very good album and definitely something I would consider buying i don't think it warrants a 5, but is definitely worth a solid 4.
Track 1 and 5 are masterpieces
The opener is a real masterpiece, but the rest of this album is great. A little dated since everything's been plumbed a million times, and a little dated since some of the sounds are just so associated with the time, but still packed to the gills with good stuff. I think it's a victim of that datedness, so it \"only\" gets a four.
The maggot brain guitar solo is one of the greats. The groove and funk is really thorough, but maybe a little looser than I prefer. I like the tight concentration of Parliament, and Funkadelic always feels a little looser and more shambolic.
One of the best albums, mixing soul, funk and jazz all together
Interesting. I've heard Maggot Brain the song many times, but never bothered to listen to the whole album. This is great stuff. I've been lucky enough to see Clinton in a venue small enough to reach out and touch him. Profoundly interesting human.
Not totally legal here, but I’m ignoring the last 12 minutes, or 1/3 of this album. The opening track is not the type of thing I usually like, but this one hit home…an acid trip long guitar solo imagining your mom died. The first side of this album is great.
Holy cow I wasn't expecting a psychedelic rock band! Totally blown away. Definitely worth a few more listens to get all the juicy layers.
I liked it a lot. Pretty vibey. Good for background music, but I expect it rewards close listening as well. Maggot Brain and Wars of Armageddon were my favs.
This was an interesting album from Funkadelic -- very much more hard rock edged than previous albums I've heard from them and Parliament. Funky but very loud and guitaristic. I enjoyed listening to it. Four stars.
"Maggot Brain" was a great track. Very ethereal and a bit Hendrix-like. "Hit It And Quit It" had a really nice hook to it. This album was a fun romp. It wasn't as funky as I was expecting, but was a bluesy-soulful album. Definitely worth a listen.
Great guitar, good groove, fun and funky!
this was real real good and soulful as HELL. travis scott mentioned also so that was cool. every song was so cool in its own way except for the last one because i was literally so incredibly grossed out when it was quite literally just FART NOISES THE WHOLE TIME????????????????? don't piss me off.
Far more psychedelic than I thought it was going to be but the clue is in the name! Can You Get To That is a stone cold classic.
Can’t believe I’d never listened to this one. The opener was a big surprise, more like listening to pink Floyd. Love the chaotic energy, very listenable but always sounds like it’s about to fall apart.
Not much experience with funk, but this was actually pretty good. Some great bass (as expected) and the songs were good. Not bad, not bad at all.
Black Rock, never knew there was a sub genre of this. This album is epic, so glad you introduced it for me. 4 stars
The first song (Maggot Brain) was an instant add. The whole album was an incredible listen and was so different than anything else I normally listen too but it fit so well into my music taste that made want to find other funk stylings from the 70s. The last song (Wars of Armageddon) was really good until the last like minute. I cant believe that a funk song from 1971 would have too many sound effects but that really was the my issues with that song. I don't think this album was perfect but I was really into and that last minute sort of soured it just because I personally loved the riffs and jamming of the first songs versus sound effects. There could be very good artistic reasons for those but they just didn't hit with me. Regardless I would still highly recommend this album.
Title track A++++++. Super Stupid A+ Rest is fine, not my style.
I like it. Hendrix like sound
Hearing the opening, I was worried this album would be too cool for me. And I was right. But the first song was enough to hook me after the initial intro because 10 minutes of really stick guitar is all that I ever need to get behind a cause.
Very funky!
The opening track is fire; the rest of the album holds up pretty well too, although it did lose me a bit closer to the end. Still, it was a fantastic listen. 4 stars
The good songs are very good but some of the songs are a bit long winded. Can you get to that and hit it and quit it are too good though.
really good, tho i feel the title track overshadows the rest a bit
weirdness on a few tracks aside, amazing album!
Pretty good experimental
Classic album for "Can You Get to That" alone.
i liked it but why the fuck does it start randomly shitting in my ear
The titular 'Maggot Brain' is an absolute work of art.
Surprising horror movie vibes with swathes of organ. Interesting and varied.
Nightmare funk Title track is incredible I wanna know
I have never heard this before today, it's very good. A nice variety of sounds/styles that are very fun to listen to. Has a really nice chill groove that I like. I'm going to be listening to it again for sure.
grabbed me more this time than on previous listens - definitely one to come back to
I've never heard this album or any of the songs before, but I really liked it! Maggot Brain starts off strong, a little bit like Mars Volta meets Jimmy Hendrix. Definitely took the guitar to the edges there. I smiled at the 90 degree shift to the shorter funkier songs. The thing that is keeping me from giving this five stars is the last song Wars of Armageddon. Too much of too much going on. Cows mooing, screaming cats, whoopee cushions... The groove was nice, but the noises felt like a kid scribbled over a work of art. Maybe that's what they intended.
Fun and different. It's a fat funky album. Surprised not to see Frank Zappa in the credits for the last track (Wars of Armageddon).
Enjoyed this...would listen to it again.
I really enjoyed! 8/10 Would I listen again? Probably
A really fun psychedelic funk album. The first track is really interesting, the next 5 tracks are really fun, and then the last track is good but then loses me at the end. The two 10-minute instrumentals make the album as a whole feel really short, and I do kind of wish there was more, but it's a really good album. Favorite Song(s): Maggot Brain, Hit It and Quit It
Amazing for its time, title track alone could be a 5/5, rest of the album not as strong. Really love the closing track, so much packed into a short album.
maggot braaain. scho 100 mol ghört nonie aktiv glost. tönt schono cool das ganze, isch seeehr viel afoch de glich ton woner immer immer wieder ufezieht. ich check die psychedelisch wirkig vo mega langsamer begleitig und d gitarre wo wüüürklich tönt als wär sie am sterbe. aber s passiert halt harmonisch nüüüüt. can you get to that isch folkier im ahfang alsi mer denkt het bi ihne. aber tönt geil. recht gnosse moll findi super. hit it and quit it chönt eventuell problematisch sii? booah aber de bass und s riff allgemein slapped. you and your folks het huuuuere geile bass super stupid ebe au, huere high energy huere rockig aber dock funky. seehr geil. find am hazel sin stil bim soliere afoch chli sehr nöch am hendrix. back in our minds macht funny doing dwing stuff. wars of armageddon isch quasi s schnelle gegestuck zu maggit brain, au fast 10 minute und so. s isch psychedelischer und so und het halt huuuere viel so grüsch (fürz) wo mitspieled. finds wie maggot brain z lang für das wos macht, ich bin halt gad jetz nöd uf LSD. album abgseh vode lange lieder seeehr guet, die lange si d au cool aber z lang und mached chli z wenig. VIEEEEEER
Very strong start and end to the album. Middle is meh. 4/5
What the fuck is going on with the diarrhea sounds on the last track
The cover is iconic, George is iconic, the album is good. Opening track is amazing, the highlight for sure a representation of the pain and beauty of birth. A couple other standouts but it didn't quote coalesce as a whole album for me. I think I could use a little mind altering help to really groove to it. But I'll definitely come back to ruminate more. Saved Songs: - Maggot Brain - Hit It And Quit It - Super Stupid
This album does exactly what it says on the tin. It starts with an ominous voiceover (“I have tasted maggots in the mind of the universe”) before setting off on a musical journey spanning acid rock, funk, soul, prog and even a bit of gospel in case y’all need churchin’ up. The highlights are the title track and the closing ‘Wars of Armageddon’ both clocking in around 10 minutes. Truly funkadelic!
I’m no expert on funk but I know what I like when I hear it. And I like this. A lot. Zero tracks that I would tune out or lose interest in.
Really enjoyed this album quite funky and had only listened to a few songs prior
A solid listen.
I own this on vinyl after hearing about it being a must own funk record. It really is amazing and the fuzz guitar is just so good. Stand out tracks: - Maggot Brain - Can You Get To That - Super Stupid
Funky! And the opening track is great
Maggot Brain is amazing
Groovy, funky, great guitar playing. Maggot Brain is the clear standout track here, but there are moments to love throughout the album. low 4.
Maggot Brain Can You Get to That
Super stupid and Can you get to that were my favorites. Very entertaining album as a whole. Pioneering in a ton of ways. Wild to think that this was 1971. This had dark elements, dancy tunes and incredible improvisation
Very weird and very fun. Probably something I will put on a ton, but really enjoyed it as an album.
This may be the greatest funk/R&B record of all time. The production is great, it’s sounds modern. The highlight for me is the title track. The guitar is incredible, sounds like Mike McCready 8.1/10
uh
I wasn't quite into it at the start, but that quickly changed and I ended up listening to the whole thing four times yesterday. Great album that'll definitely go in my rotation.
So good. The title track and Can You Get With That especially are stellar 4/5
3.9 A lot more rock than funk but enjoyable nonetheless
Very much a Funkadelic album, but a little more refined than most of the others. “Can You Get to That” is a classic. 4/5 Will listen again
5 stars for the first song alone and maybe one of the best and longest guitar solo, especially with the background story of this song. The rest of the album is okay.
;)
hell yea. 4.5
great
i think ive been transported
I really wanted to like this more than I did. Nonetheless still a great album. The opening track features an amazing emotional solo. The other tracks decrease in effectiveness as the album progresses. I thought the last track was ridiculous with all of the random noises, but then I guess it makes sense in the context of Maggot Brain (like brain rot I suppose).
Apt band name. Love the fart noises at the end
Really like the music from Funkadelic and appreciated the playlist and that genre that followed on Spotify
8/10
So fucking good
Again an album I liked way more than expected. Heard some Hendrix and Zappa influences. Really nice.
heard the title track, or at least some of it, before, but never gave the rest of this a listen. cannot believe i was missing out. this album is pretty fantastic for the most part, but there is a metal warbling on back in our minds that i can't decide if i tolerate or despise, and gross farting noises on wars of armageddon. why did they do that?
Great listening experience. Need to grow but I like it
Oh, Funkadelic!
Liked most of it but first and last songs. Can You Get To That was really nice. This genre is cool
Whoa! This is a rockin funky take you to church album that gets downright nasty. There’s no need for two songs over 9 minutes. This album could be mood dependent but it worked well for a Friday morning.
Unbelievably creative! Never know what to expect after each song.
.
Favorite Tracks: Can You Get To That Maggot Brain
Now this is my jam! OMG I could listen to the opening track "Maggot Brain" every day. "I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe." Me too. Little bit weaker in the middle, but finishes strongly. I can get to that. Four sequined stars.
Imagine recording this album and then just fucking off
The sequencing of this album is funny because it's five pretty tight songs in the middle, bookended by two long songs, about 10 minutes each. The opener, "Maggot Brain" is a stunner. Basically one, epic psychedelic guitar solo. The closing track is the absurd, apocalyptic funk track "Wars of Armageddon." Not something I need to listen to a lot but it does make me laugh. The top highlight for me is "Can You Get to That." Just an incredible, soulful, funk-pop song. That acoustic guitar riff is so good. It's a great, feel good song. I first heard it in college when the indie band Sleigh Bells sampled it for the song "Rill Rill." I was very happy to be introduced to this album as a result of that song. (And that Sleigh Bells song is still a banger.) "Hit It and Quit It" is excellent as well. Honestly, all of these tracks in the midsection of the album are strong. Great album cover. 4.5
A wonderfully diverse and deep album. From the start of the first track you know you are in for something interesting- with the sad arpeggiated clean guitar, lazy snare that is just behind the beat about 50% of the time, and the crying wailing electric guitar, it's a cool intro. "Can You Get To That" and "Hit It And Quit It" are the two standouts. I kind of wish the album had more of these throughout, as I think the first three songs are the best three. "Super Stupid" is a cool track but there's times where it feels kind of like an amalgam of a bunch of other songs- like a big puzzle that's pieces are elements of other songs, like a riff from a Stones song, a drum beat from Zeppelin, and vocals from Hendrix. Which of course, is really cool! Imagine hearing a song written by those three? At the same time, it comes across as a little off to me. Eddie Hazel rips on guitar, and George Clinton is amazing. Solid 4.
Higher than I ever thought I'd rate funk
It's a good album. 2 songs take up 20 of tge 36 minutes. So if you like that sort of thing. Music is good. Seemed like they had a good time making it. Rounded up
You’d be Super Stupid to not like this album. But don’t just Hit It and Quit It.
I don't usually like 70's rock, but the funk element and experimental opening and closing tracks made me a bit more fond of this one. Pretty fun overall.
Excellent
Some songs not available on Spotify. I liked the album and favorited "You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks"
Couple of awesome songs, some things that were a bit too strange (last song). Overall pretty good.
This was good but I liked parliament’s mothership earth better.
Lots of great guitar work and very fun.
Interesting album. The instrumental title track, "Maggot Brain", is wow! And the rest of the album is like a cross btween The Temptations and Jimi Hendrix.
Not what I expected. Funky but not nearly as funky as expected. It is really a smorgasbord. A lot of it is fantastic. The 1st guitar song is David Gilmour-esque. In fact the guitar work is awesome throughout with shades of Hendrix. Lots of different styles and types of songs. Fun album. 3.5 4 for effort
The opening track is breathtaking and the album is fantastic beyond that.
Very good funk rock, includes bangers such as the title track and can you get to that. The record was front loaded I feel, as I didn’t enjoy the second half as much.
Thunderingly funky and also experimental. Upbeat listen for a sunny train ride up north
Great album mostly carried by the title track. Best song: Maggot Brain (obviously)
I like the more emblematic P-Funk sound, but a psychedelic rock album isn’t going to get a bad score from me. There is one standout track on this album, Can You Get To That. The rest of it is good too, but doesn’t really rise to the same level
I love childish gambino
They rock hard. And they groove hard. I liked it.
I really did like everything except for the title and the cover. Will listen again though.
Funk yeah! Love it!
“Hit It and Quit It” is a God-Tier track bro. The album is a bit dragging at the last two tracks but overall the album’s great. I give it a 9/10, it might even go higher on repeated listens.
Again the reviews help prepare me for what I'm listening to. Psychedelic is a key word. The first track is exceptional and is why I'll probably give the album 4 stars.
I don't get it. This lp has a ton of 5 reviews praising the funk. Quite frankly I hear nore funk in a Chili Peppers album or a Grand Funk Railroad lp. Don't get me wrong it is very good but it starts off with a 9 minute Rock solo guitar and ends with another 9 minute opus but this time it was an ode to the band War. In-between were some very good soul and blues tracks. I will be listening again.
this was great, a really good listen, loved the first track
Basically the same as my previous Funkadelic review - not my bag, but I respect the skills involved to a huge extent. This album starts with a 10 minute rock guitar extravaganza that puts more traditional rock guitarists to absolute shame. It ends with a load of weird sound effects including a gaseous cow(?). In between there's a load of good funk that was very nice to have on while I worked.
Very good album, intense, funky and completly captivates the brain!!
I am not a fan of a guitar solo. I found maggot brain (the track) to be a hard start to the album. Its also so out of place when you hear the rest of the album. The album picked up though, can you get to that is a fun track and hit it and quit it really kicked the album off in style and set the tone for the music and direction. This is a fun listen. Very early psychedelica and good psychedelica Favourite song: can you get to that Least favourite: Maggot brain Album artwork: the cover suits the album
Classique. 8/10
Fuck yeah this album is so cool, oozes so much fun and excitement. Funk and rock fusion is delicious and this is it. I do think the last 2 songs didn't get me as much as the first ones but who cares, this album good. Maggot Brain (song) is amazing as well, 10 minutes of guitar porn. Fav songs: - Maggot Brain - Can You Get to That - Hit it and Quit It - You and Your Folks - Super Stupid
All time classic funk
Catchy. 4/5
Perfect. Exactly what I wanted from this list. Something which is not normally my thing and something that I never would have listened to without it, but blew me away. The solo's on the opening track and on super stupid are face melting. Love it. Few weaker tracks and I was hoping the last track would be more akin to the first but overall still incredible for something that's over half a century old.
I was surprised to like this album so much, but so many parts reminded me of the Hendrix "Band of Gypsys" material, and it had some really great sonic space and a feeling of place to it. I am giving it 4 stars, kind of rounding up, because I did enjoy it. However, in the end, it doesn't really have a lot of substance that really makes it that memorable to me, personally, and not something I can see myself listening to regularly.
If the final track had more vocals and fewer fart noises, this would be an easy 5/5.
Art funk is what this could be described as. That’s hard af
After a bunch of crap in a row this was refreshing. Funky psychedelica. Need to buy this on vinyl.
WoW ! That first track is something else. 4 stars
Funky, but I got another funkadelic record less than 2 months ago that was more funky so this didn't go as hard for me.
this is cool
This was a pretty cool album. The trippy instrumentals on either end were interesting, with some funkier tracks in between. Felt like a complete journey. The chaos of the last track felt like a great representation of the maddening and violent struggle for equality.
Last track was a bit off, but the rest was fun
A solid rip
Неплохой альбом, довольно ровный будто бы, но при этом слушается бодро. Просто супэр обложка. Лучшая песня - Maggot Brain.
pleasantly surprised. Didn't expect to enjoy it as much, especially the first half
Didn’t love it as much as I thought I would, considering its legendary reputation. Best solo ever in the opening song “Maggot Brain”? Not for me. You can hear where they took some of these ideas and morphed them into a more R&B flavored stew for Parliament’s Mothership Connection so I appreciate it for that, but I like that album more.
maggot brain is an amazing song. the rest of the album is also good.
Funk kongen George Clintons kanskje kuleste album.. Deilig psykedelisk funk frå 1971.
Funky little album here. Which, you know, makes sense.
This was my first time listening to Funkadelic, but it won't be the last. Maggot Brain is a nice fusion of funk and rock. Eddie Hazel shows his amazing skill in the opening track, which manages to be both emotional and psychedelic. While not every song was equally strong, the album as a whole was well produced and arranged.
The first song isn’t actually a song. Rather, it is an extended (10+ minute) guitar cadenza: free form soloing over a sparse rhythm, with a few quiet chords. It’s pretty interesting, actually, in the sense that Hendrix’s explorations (or Roy Buchanan’s) were. The next couple of songs are more what I was expecting, funk, with a bit of a hard edge. Progressive soul…. Very well done, groovy, in a serious manner. This ain’t top 40, and that’s not a bad thing. The last song is another 10 minute exploration, full of alarm clocks and animal sounds and farts. Kind of like an over the top homage to the Beatles’ “Revolution 9”. But at least it is presented over a funk rhythm, with lots of wild guitar. This doesn’t work for me, and takes up over 1/4th the running time. This is a solid 4 until the last song, which drags it down. But I’ll still round up to 4
First song had me thinking this was gonna be another weird one. However every song after was classic very listenable funk. Nice.
Amazing!
Oikeen viihdyttävä
cool and funky
- yummy
Very good mixing and instrumentals, the name fits
I wanna know if you can get with that is a straight up banger.
6/1001. This fire. I definitely see its influence on gambino’s “awaken, my love”. Basically my intro to funk as a genre in general, and a great one at that. Favorite track was “maggot brain”
Great guitar riffs
Wow, not what I was expecting! I liked all of this - except the last song, Wars of Armageddon. But starting with Maggot Brain - the guitar work, just good music. Will be coming back to hear more from this group.
Just the first 2 tracks make this a great album. Maggot Brain is Funkadelic going psychedelic. Can You Get to That has always been a song i dug a lot but then got a second wind with me when Mt Joy started covering it in the middle of Astrovan. Anyway, I like this album a lot.
Wow. Fabulous guitar on the opening track. Followed by 25 minutes of solid funk.
Solid 8/10
What a jam. 8/10
That was one weird, funky album. Kind of liked it but pretty sure one listen will be all it gets from me. Would love to know what the artistic version was behind the Armageddon number. All in all, strange but in a good way.
I didn't think farting sounds would make for required listening before I died, but you know, I've been surprised by many things. Really, this is a jam throughout with the title track being oddly satisfying.
phat phunky...
4.5
Solid album. Maggot brain is definitely the best track, but I enjoyed the rest (with maybe the last track being a bit odd). Solid 4, pushing 4.5-5.
Fantastic guitar work, especially on the first track, though I admit the album kind of faded into the background as it progressed, and I got a little bored. 3.5 rounded up
Great. Way out there, but still accessible and entertaining.
I gotta say, I listen to one nation under a groove, and gave it a three. It was OK, but I was not in the mood for this album, which I assumed would be basically the same thing. It’s funk, but it’s different. And I mean that in the best way. I really enjoyed this album. that title track is strong. The whole album is. It was really what I needed while I was working. And I mean working. Today is Project day around the house and I’m cleaning out the shed. This is some shed cleaning music! Fantastic!
Whoa that’s one of the most incredible guitar solos I’ve ever heard. Tempted to give the entire album a 5 off its strength alone but not sure I’m quite that high on it. Still a strong product as a whole with a really tight band. Best song: Maggot Brain
2 hits wonder
funkadelic indeeeeed
They indeed, got the funk
Funkin great funk.
Not only does P-Funk put the funk in funk but he also puts the "fun" in funk. This album is a bit more on the weird and fringe side of things happening during the 60s, but the listener should allow themselves plenty of runway coming down from this listen. The album plays well but unlike some of the other offerings that Funkadelic (or Parliament+Funkadelic) would eventually put out, this one has a bit of ominousness to it that gives it a bitter palette. The funk and the fun are all there, but so is a little bit of weird, enough to throw it off balance a bit, and just enough to miss perfect.
Roxxy music was moldy, bad 70's. This is awesome 70's
A perfect funk album, given 4 stars because funk isn't always my thing -- and yet, this one is.
The funk cannot be contained. Medium 4.
Superb album front to back. Opens with an emotional guitar onslaught and the rest of the album is a funk throwdown. I've always loved 'Hit It and Quit It' and 'Can You Get to That'. 'Wars of Armageddon' is rocking groovy funked out closer. Love this album!
Pretty easy listening and a quick album. Easy to get some work done while hearing and put me in a better mood.
Nice. I like
Well I’ve had an album by Parliament already, might as well have a Funkadelic album, too. This was such a different vibe. Really felt like a rock band doing funk at times, and then a funk band doing rock. Great instrumentation throughout, and some of the lower vocals were just so nice to listen to. Also, “Wars of Armageddon” is a political and social statement and I am 100% here for it. Wondering now if at some point I’ll get a Parliament-Funkadelic album. Really hoping I do. Standout tracks: Can You Get to That, Hit It and Quit It, Super Stupid, Wars of Armageddon
strange but surprisingly OK
7 / 10 Mezcla Rock Psicodélico-Funky. Muy buena instrumentación, guitarras a tope, muy escuchable.
Cool stuff - 4 stars! 🤩
Nice album.
Album 332 of 1001 Funkadelic - Maggot Brain Rating : 4 / 5 This has been a favorite for a few years now. Certainly bolstered by the awesome title track, but the whole album is a really good listen. My go-to for some awesome funk.
Dit was echt heerlijk, kende het niet maar ga het zeker vaker luisteren
Groovy, funky, and I'm sure influenced the sound of many bands with a similar style in the future. Fun listen
ok this rocks music: appreciated. (⌐■_■)
3.75 Stars. I've know this is very famous, and it took me a while to even approach this listen, as "Maggot Brain" requires a certain level of calm and focus to appreciate. I'm surprised this is their most popular song, as it's a very slow burn, atmospheric psychedelic rock track. The structure of this album is intriguing, as the book ends are really long, experimental songs that don't allow much for a passive listen. The tracks in between these, however, are really catchy, groovy and funky songs. It's nice to find where Sleigh Bells got the sample for their most popular song ("Can You Get to That" / "Rill Rill") While the album it's a casual listen as a whole, it is certainly an engaging one. Did not appreciate having fart sounds in my ears, though
Funky
psychedelic rock meets funk. classic album. highlights: “maggot brain”, “hit it and quit it”, “super stupid”
That is a hell of a lot of fun.
Wow did I learn a lot about that first track, and then the left turn hits. Great stuff.
this record jams. Love 'can you get to that' since Sleigh Bells covered it.
I can totally get to that.
This was great but not quite as good as the other Funkadelic we got ("One Nation ..."). Personally I quite liked the last track with all the strange noises.
Upon listening to this album a second time it definitely clicked a lot more than the first time I'd heard it. It's a pretty rocking album though it is a bit strange at times that makes it hard for me to rate it too highly.
Absolutely love this one!! Killer opening track…
Loved this. Such a disparate mix that comes together to keep me listening, moving, smiling, and making worryingly guttural noises at some stages. If nothing else, the guitar on the title track is jaw-droppingly awesome.
This loses a star for fart sounds at the end of the last song. Otherwise it was a fun album.
Good Sunday morning funk. 1st song is 10 minutes of guitar solo. Last song is 10 minutes of experimental freestyle/weirdness with lots of drums and sound effects (lions, cows, aeroplanes and cuckoo clocks) Think I preferred the first half
I like, reminds me of Faust
Funkadelic consistently out rock, out funk and out punk the competition and their innovative and unusual approach to songwriting makes this a unique and rightly celebrated album.
Overall -I need this vinyl immediately -ok they lost me a bit in the second half -this album blew my mind a little bit Maggot Brain -Okkkkkkk guitar -is it too guitar tracks or a delay????? -yo this is NUTS with headphones -I want this vinyl even if only for this song Can you get to that -fucks Hit it and quit it -also fucks -this is insane You and your folks -god damn Super Stupid -ok FUCK -is this a joke ???? -OK TEMPO
So so funky. I was taken aback by the album title and cover. Loved the music. Recording sounds incredible. Even listening digitally, I can almost hear the crackle of the vinyl. Super cool album!
Liked the opening track. Very funky album
Opening track "Maggot Brain" is a sonic mélange of funky riffs, searing, shrill solos, overlaid on a soft, gentle piano riff. It is one of the more interesting intro tracks on an album, given the musical composition and also the ten-minute-plus runtime. The second track, "Can You Get To That" is an almost-perfect counterpoint to "Maggot Brain," with its deep, slow, grooving riffs and basslines, with harmonizing vocals and the general freneticism of a party about to explode. The remaining tracks on the album are more in the vein of 'Funk' rather than 'Experimental Funk,' yet those experimental elements persist throughout the album, especially in the percussion. Except the final track on the initial release, "Wars of Armageddon," which bookends the opening track with a funky, driving medley of madness, hypnotic in its frenzied menagerie of sounds. The final taste of a guitar lick in the waning seconds sounds, in a way, like a requiem. The death of what, specifically, is unknown to me. Perhaps the waning of a charged decade that fomented, above all, change. Staring into the unknown future as the music fades.
This was fun, enjoyable but not massively interesting or unique That being said, I was a bit sad when it ended so it got an extra star for that!
Peak funk. Maggot Brain, can Uou Get To That, and Back in Our Minds are classic, iconic songs. I enjoyed this very much.
Intro / chanson éponyme trop bien, full guitare
amazing stuff but it's hard to compare to the once-in a lifetime title track that opens up and makes you think the album will follow being as magical
Who’s got the funk? 3.8
Very pleasantly surprised by this. I’m not a funk kind of guy, but the songs on this were unique and overall, very fun to listen to.
The guitar work on this album is phenomenal! Great rock album.
Første nummer er for vildt! Fedt album!
Titelnummeret er 11/10, bedste guitarsolo nogensinde. Kan også virkelig godt lide resten af pladen, men man får måske lidt for meget piskesmæld i overgangen fra titelnummeret til resten
Great
I had veeeeery low hopes for this, given the name of the artist and the album and also the person speaking in the beginning of the first album haha HOWEVER... the beautiful guitar work in the first song really got me intrigued. It kind of had a slightly more expanded Jimmy Hendrix sound to it. The second song was nice but then the rest were a bit too much :D too many instruments playing over there, it was a bit overwhelming, and also the last 3 songs weren't available for my region on Spotify, so I had to look them on Youtube. Things started off well but, as the name suggests, this is more for whenever you are on drugs and want to have something to make things worse in the background. On top of everything, the Wars of Armageddon song had farts and toilet flushing sounds, which was too much, alongside the too many instruments playing at the same time. The last three tracks that were unavailable for me on Spotify are actually Bonus Tracks to the album, and they were actually very nice and normal, so that's great.
Funky and psychadelic
8/10 - I liked it. Had me dancing in my kitchen
